$150 million and GH¢10 million required to win elections in Ghana

0

A report by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has revealed that securing victory in both presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana requires an estimated amount of $150 million, along with an additional GH¢10 million.

The report highlights the growing monetisation of democracy in the country and its detrimental impact on the fight against corruption and the promotion of accountability.

According to myjoyonline.com, Kojo Asante, Director of Programs at CDD-Ghana, made these remarks during a recent presentation before the Constitutional Review Committee.

“We must begin electing leaders with integrity and orienting them towards the public interest, as this focus on public welfare also drives development,” he stated.

“There must be clear provisions for disqualifying candidates who breach regulations, as well as mandatory asset declarations for those running for office. We also need to address the oversight of political parties themselves, which ultimately falls under the Electoral Commission,” he added.

African social movements push for “borderless” Africa to ease movement

0

By Edward Acquah

Accra, April 14, GNA – African social movements dedicated to the unification of Africa have called for the implementation of policies supporting free movement and continental integration.

The movements said the creation of a borderless Africa would remove trade barriers, facilitate the free flow of goods and services, and enable the free movement of people across the continent.

They made the call at the opening of the 3rd African Social Movements Baraza (conference) in Accra on Monday.

The three-day event assembled leaders and members of social movements from across Africa to foster solidarity, collaboration, and joint actions and strengthen the African social movements network.

The event, organised by the TrustAfrica in partnership with Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), also identified common challenges and explored collective solutions.

Among the topics discussed by the participants included movement organising strategies, funding approaches, and building solidarity to address the pressing issues.

African social movements are grassroots organisations and collective actions that aim to promote social justice, human rights, and community development in Africa.

Mr Ebrima Sall, the Executive Director of TrustAfrica, told journalists that it was difficult for Africans to travel within Africa, undermining the free flow of goods and people.

He called for the implementation of policies and agreements that would make mobility possible for purposes of work, study, and living conditions.

“We should make it easy for Africans to connect with other Africans across the continent. Even if you have to ask for a visa, make it easy for people to be able to obtain a visa when they come on.” Mr Sall said.

He also appealed to governments to listen to the messages delivered by social movements, support their work, and be more engaging to help find solutions to issues that affected the welfare of the people.

Madam Vera Abena Addo, Programmes Officer at CDD-Ghana, said social movements played significant roles in promoting good governance and democracy and thus the need to support their survival.

She called for more collaboration between social movements and think tanks to advocate for better conditions for the people of Africa among other political, social, and economic interventions.

“It is important that organisations like CDD, which is well established and has been doing this work for some time, needs to work with social movements.” Madam Addo said.

National Service Staff Warn Foot Soldiers

0

Ayirebi Adubofour

The staff of the National Service Authority (NSA) have strongly condemned the practice of political party foot soldiers attempting to hijack the National Service Authority.

In a release signed by the Chairman of the National Service Authority Staff Union (NASASU), Ayirebi Adubofour, they stated that “this phenomenon undermines the principle of democracy, erodes public trust, and compromises the integrity of our institutions.”

Continuing, they said, “We wish to reiterate, to the general public that, the National Service Authority is a public institution under the Public Services Commission. Our recruitments and transfers are done in line with our approved Scheme of Service, and in accordance with the Public Services Commission Act and the

provisions of the Constitution under Article 195.”

They have especially called on the youth of Western Region to exercise restraint and allow the Management of the Authority to function as defined by the laws and statutes.

“We are equally calling on Management to adhere to the guiding principles and protect the integrity of the Authority.

“We call on the government to ensure that state institutions like the National Service Authority be protected from political interference,” they demanded.

To the political parties, they have advised them to refrain from using the National Service Authority as tool for advancing party interests, and to respect the independence of the Authority, adding that National Service Authority internal transfers and recruitments is not at the mercy of any other group or individual’s call but as enshrined in the National Service Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1119), the Public Services Commission Act, 1994 (Act 482) and Article 195 of the Constitution.

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has revealed that the government will disburse $1 million to support over 1,500 peasant farmers in Northern Ghana, as part of the Feed Ghana Project aimed at boosting vegetable production.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, April 14, 2025, Mr. Opoku said the initiative is focused on empowering grassroots farmers, particularly those already engaged in the cultivation of tomatoes and other vegetables.

“We are dealing with the peasant farmers because they are on the field and are registered. Some are already into tomato production. So, it is just a matter of our team identifying them and giving them the logistics they require,” he stated.

According to the Minister, the financial aid is crucial because many of these small-scale farmers lack the capital needed to expand their operations.

The official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Apex Bank to facilitate the disbursement is scheduled for Wednesday, April 16, 2025.

“I will engage the media because I will sign an MoU with the Apex Bank for the distribution of $1 million to over 1,500 peasant farmers in the Northern part of the country for the production of vegetables. This is just the beginning,” Mr. Opoku added.

In addition to financial support, the government is also providing technical assistance, including the supply of improved seeds and farming inputs designed to enhance productivity and support year-round cultivation.

“Our technical team has come up with the best quality, and we are supplying that to our farmers. I have been to the field and I can tell you—we have the technical know-how to surpass what Burkina Faso is doing,” the Minister declared confidently.

The intervention is part of a broader strategy under the Planting for Food and Jobs Phase II, which aims to strengthen food security, reduce imports, and create sustainable livelihoods for smallholder farmers across the country.

BRUHM boosts presence in Ghana with community outreach and retail expansion

0

BRUHM, a leading home appliance brand, is reinforcing its presence in Ghana through direct community engagement, expanded retail channels, and promotional initiatives aimed at delivering enhanced value to consumers.

The brand began the year with a dynamic three-day roadshow across key commercial hubs in Accra, including Circle, Madina, Kasoa, and Accra Central. The outreach featured live cooking demonstrations using BRUHM gas cookers, food sampling, product displays, and interactions with local influencers.

“Our aim was to meet Ghanaians where they are and let them experience BRUHM products in real time. We’re focused on building trust and helping consumers make confident choices for their homes,” said Ms Awurakua Antwi, Brands Communication Manager for BRUHM Ghana.

The brand showcased its product range—spanning cooling, cooking, laundry, and entertainment appliances—designed with simplicity, functionality, and affordability in mind, qualities that have endeared BRUHM to households across the country.

In line with its retail expansion strategy, BRUHM has launched a Shop-in-Shop concept at the new Electromart outlet at Atomic Junction. The dedicated section provides customers with the opportunity to view the full range of BRUHM products in a single location. To mark the opening, Ghanaian music legend Reggie Rockstone was gifted a chest freezer during his visit to the store. He also endorsed the brand’s practical features and affordability.

BRUHM products are now available through major retail chains including Melcom, China Mall, Electromart, Super Save, and Kitchen & Beyond. The brand also maintains an online presence via Jumia and Electromart’s e-commerce platforms, ensuring nationwide accessibility.

To coincide with the Easter period, BRUHM has rolled out promotional offers for 2025, including bundled deals such as free fans with the purchase of air conditioners, available at Electromart outlets across the country.

“Buying BRUHM is not just a purchase—it’s a long-term investment in convenience and reliability,” Ms Antwi stated. “We are consistently listening to customers and adapting our offerings to suit their needs.”

The company has hinted at upcoming campaigns, retail collaborations, and product innovations tailored to the needs of Ghanaian households.

Some gospel artistes focus more on survival than ministry

0

Entertainment pundit, Arnold Asamoah Baidoo Entertainment pundit, Arnold Asamoah Baidoo

Entertainment pundit and media personality Arnold Asamoah Baidoo has stated that many gospel artistes in Ghana are more driven by the need to earn a living than by a genuine desire to spread the gospel.

Arnold made these comments while weighing in on the topic of spiritual attacks in the gospel music industry.

“Gospel music, for some, is a facade; they’re only in it because it feeds them, not necessarily to spread the gospel,” he stated on United Showbiz on April 12, 2025.

He pointed out that while many people assume gospel musicians are shielded from spiritual attacks due to their association with faith, the reality is quite the opposite.

“People don’t expect spiritual attacks in gospel music because it’s about God, but we forget these artistes are also vulnerable to emotions, temptations, and external influences,” he stated.

He also claimed that some preachers and gospel artistes have “backing from elsewhere”, implying possible spiritual or ulterior influences behind their work.

“So, hearing that spiritual attacks also happen in the gospel music industry is not surprising. They are also humans. There are many people singing gospel music or preaching in churches who have backing from somewhere else,” he said.

Over 20 ‘obnoxious’ taxes at the ports must go – Auto dealers to government

Vehicle buyers lament 'obnoxious' taxes at the ports Vehicle buyers lament ‘obnoxious’ taxes at the ports

The Vehicle and Assets Dealers Union of Ghana (VADUG) has expressed frustration over the numerous taxes vehicle dealers must pay at the ports to clear their goods.

According to the union, the taxes imposed on vehicle buyers are “unnecessary” and overly expensive.

These charges include Import Duty, Import VAT, the GHS Disinfection Fee, the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy, Vehicle Examination Fees, and the African Union Import Levy, among others.

The Executive Secretary of VADUG, Frank Atanley Kofigah, described the fees at the ports as “obnoxious.”

“If you’re a customer clearing a vehicle at the port, be prepared to pay over twenty different fees.

“When you go in there now, you have to deal with the GHS Disinfection Fee and the Special Import Levy. That 2% levy, what is it even for? It was introduced for a specific purpose. Is that purpose still relevant? We need to critically examine these charges,” he said, as quoted by citinewsroom.com.

VADUG emphasised the need for the government to fast-track the implementation of a comprehensive auto-financing policy that would allow banks and financial institutions to offer credit facilities to vehicle buyers.

They argued that, in addition to paying for insurance and freight costs, buyers are also required to pay taxes based on the vehicle’s original model year purchase price, regardless of when the vehicle was actually purchased.

Under Ghanaian law, vehicles older than five years attract an additional 50% penalty based on the original value, while brand-new vehicles under six months old are exempt from depreciation-related penalties.

The Executive Secretary also highlighted Ghana’s lack of a proper vehicle financing system.

“In other countries, if you’re employed, you can walk into a dealership with zero down payment and just a valid appointment letter and still drive away in a financed car. Why not here?” he questioned.

NFL and IFAF host flag football development clinic in Ghana

Some officials during the Flag Football Development Clinic Some officials during the Flag Football Development Clinic

The National Football League and the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) hosted a flag football coach education and officiating clinic in Accra, Ghana from April 11-13, 2025, as part of the strategy to accelerate the development and growth of the game across the continent.

The three-day flag football clinic welcomed coaches and officials from 10 African countries — Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia and Uganda — joined by leaders from the global flag community to support learning and education.

50 participants received both classroom and on-field learning, as the clinic looked to improve the skills of new and experienced coaches and officials — helping to promote and enable further long-term flag football engagement and participation across the continent.

Expert coaches delivering the sessions included:

Chris Curd: founder and commissioner of the Pittsburgh Flag Football League, with more than 16 years of experience in league operations.

Mike Daniels: accomplished football coach and NFL senior consultant for football development.

Fouzia Madhouni: head coach of Morocco’s Women’s Flag football team and NFL & IFAF Global Flag Ambassador.

Max von Garnier: German coach, leader of NFL Flag schools’ program in Germany and former NFL Europe player.

Cédric Castaing: international flag football referee and national coordinator for flag football officials in France.

The weekend’s activities were also supported by NFL Flag and IFAF coaches.

Fast-paced and accessible for all, flag football is spearheading extraordinary participation growth worldwide with more than 20 million players in 100 countries and women and girls driving some of the sports’ largest growth.

Since 2023 participation in flag football in Africa has surged, with Egypt and Nigeria seeing increases of 149% and 85% respectively. In Nigeria, the national federation’s outreach program has already engaged more than 13,000 young people highlighting the sport’s expanding reach and appeal.

“The NFL and IFAF are committed to continuing to develop and grow the game of flag football in Africa,” said Vice President, Flag Football at the NFL Stephanie Kwok.

“Creating meaningful educational pathways for coaches and officials delivering flag across Africa, is a critical part of the game at every level on the continent. The coach education and officiating clinic will create a powerful legacy for both the elite and grassroots levels of the game, as we build to the Los Angeles Olympics 2028 and beyond.”

“This clinic marks another crucial step in promoting the growth of flag football across Africa,” said IFAF Sport Manager Lars Carlsen. “By investing in the education and development of coaches and officials, we’re focused on developing strong local foundations that will support the game’s continued expansion.

“Working hand in hand with our partners at the NFL, IFAF is committed to empowering the next generation of coaches, officials and athletes, building a sustainable future for flag football across the region.”

Flag football will officially be included in the LA 2028 Olympic Games program, led by efforts of IFAF and supported by the NFL.

As part of the NFL Africa program, the NFL has undertaken NFL Flag development, talent identification camps and fan events across Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria since 2022.

Shut up and focus on your own constituency — Kwaku Atta Sarpong slams Owusu-Bempah

0

According to a report from GhanaWeb, Kwaku Atta Sarpong, the Deputy Organiser for the Ashanti Region of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has criticized Ernest Owusu-Bempah, the party’s Deputy Communications Officer, over his recent comments regarding the leadership for the 2028 presidential election.

In a statement seen by GhanaWeb, Atta Sarpong advised Owusu-Bempah to remain silent if he has no constructive input to offer about the party’s leadership plans for the upcoming election.

He accused Owusu-Bempah of creating division and irresponsibility within the party, alleging that his actions were partly responsible for the NPP’s loss of the Asante Akyem North parliamentary seat.

Atta Sarpong stated, “It has become necessary to respond to the recent comments by Ernest Owusu-Bempah concerning who should lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP). If Mr Bempah has nothing sensible or constructive to say on this matter, he must simply shut up.

“He should rather focus on his own constituency, Asante Akyem North (AAN), which he effectively dashed to an independent candidate, largely due to his divisive and reckless comments on radio in Agogo..”

The Deputy Organiser further emphasized that the NPP would not tolerate distractions from individuals who do not prioritize the party’s success.

He affirmed the NPP’s commitment to rebuilding, unifying, and preparing for a victorious 2028 election campaign, stressing that the party’s future would be shaped by loyal, competent, and dedicated members, not those who speak without substance.

Ernest Owusu-Bempah had recently suggested that the NPP should not retain Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate, for the 2028 election.

In an interview with Oyerepa FM on April 14, 2025, he criticized Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy, claiming it led to the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections.

He cited dissatisfaction among the grassroots, stating that many NPP supporters, including a taxi driver he met, abstained from voting due to discontent with the party’s choice of candidate.

Owusu-Bempah also expressed his belief that the NPP’s prospects in the 2028 election depend on figures such as former MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, and current MP for Abetifi, Bryan Acheampong.

Govt begins overhaul of VAT system to boost business climate

0

The Government of Ghana has officially commenced a comprehensive review of its Value Added Tax (VAT) regime, aiming to simplify the system and improve the business environment across the country.

This development was confirmed during a high-level meeting between Ghanaian officials and Wencai Zhang, Managing Director and Chief Administrative Officer of the World Bank Group.

During the engagement, Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, outlined the country’s commitment to reforming the VAT system in close collaboration with international partners.

Dr. Forson noted that a Technical Assistance Mission from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is currently in Ghana, working alongside local authorities to support the review process.

He acknowledged that the current effective VAT rate of 21.9%, one of the highest in Africa, has contributed to compliance difficulties and inefficiencies for businesses.

“We are fully aware of the challenges posed by the existing VAT structure,” Dr. Forson said. “That is why we are undertaking a complete overhaul of the system. I can assure our partners and the Ghanaian public that this reform process will be concluded before the main budget is presented in November.”

The initiative is seen as a crucial step in improving tax compliance, enhancing revenue mobilization, and making the tax system more business-friendly.

The World Bank expressed support for Ghana’s reform efforts and reiterated its commitment to working closely with the government to achieve a more efficient and equitable tax regime.

Mohammed Zakou was arrested over the weekend for allegedly spreading false information about the Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

First homeopathic over-the-counter medicine launched

0

Accra, April 14, GNA – The C4C Homeopathic Pharmaceuticals has launched Ghana’s first over-the-counter homeopathic medicine to complement the work of medical homeopath and enhance healthcare delivery.

The introduction of Livotone Liver Tonic, which has been approved by the Food and Drugs Authority for advertisement, meant that patrons of homeopathic medicine could now access the medicine in pharmacies without necessary visiting treatment centres.

Addressing a press conference in Accra in commemoration of the global Medical Homeopathic Week celebrations in Accra, Dr Michael Kyeremateng, the immediate-past Registrar of the Traditional Medicine Practice Council, described the development as significant breakthrough for Ghana’s homeopathic industry.

Dr Kyeremateng, who is also the President of the C4C Group of Companies, said hitherto no homeopathic medicine was available in pharmacies in Ghana due to the difficulty of industry players to meet the robust registration requirements.

He said the approval of the product by FDA was an indication that homeopathic practitioners could follow the required processes and overcome the hurdles to get their products approved to enhance safety.

“This will now create opportunities for Ghanaian’s nationwide to access homeopathic medicine at any major pharmacy in each region, district, communities in Ghana without stress alongside the herbal medicines and the allopathic medicines,” he said.

Dr Kyeremateng expressed concern about the activities of many practitioners who use radionic equipment’s to produce and transfer energy into water in a bottle mixed with food colour and give it out as homeopathic medicine.

He said the practice was not reviewed vetted and approved by the FDA due to the traditional nature of the practice.

Dr Michael Kyeremateng

Dr Kyeremateng said the C4C Group would train more homeopathic pharmacists and medical homeopaths to be self-employed and also work with various pharmacies, and over-the counter medicines that dispense homeopathic medications nationwide.

The initiative, he added, could create more than one million jobs in the next 22 years.

“There is the need for the proper training of the homeopathic pharmacist, the medical homeopath. Such a trained pharmacist and homeopath should have imbibed the homeopathic pharmacopoeia and its applications towards assisting patients at all homeopathic centres, clinics, hospitals, industries, factories,” he said.

Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine that aims to treat patients with highly diluted substances, typically in the form of sugar pills or liquid solutions.

The core principle of homeopathy is “like cures like,” meaning that a substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person can be used to treat similar symptoms in a person who is ill.

“Even if Trump imposes 10,000 % tariffs on the world, it will not be able to bring..”— Kwesi Pratt

0

According to a report from GhanaWeb, Kwesi Pratt Jr, the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, has sought to clarify the implications of the United States’ tariff imposition on Ghana and other countries.

He argued that the move, initiated by former President Donald Trump, reflects a belief that countries were unfairly benefiting from the U.S. to its disadvantage.

Pratt stated that these tariffs create the impression that America is being exploited by the rest of the world, but he strongly disagreed with this view.

He pointed out that it is actually the U.S. that has historically exploited other nations through various means, including wars, the transatlantic slave trade, colonialism, and neocolonialism.

Speaking on Pan African TV on April 12, 2025, Pratt explained that the U.S. had a history of undermining influential leaders like Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who played a pivotal role in awakening political consciousness across Africa.

He cited the industrialization efforts led by Nkrumah in Ghana, which were allegedly a factor in his overthrow, an event that some attribute to the intervention of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Pratt expressed that if any nation had the right to consider itself exploited, it would certainly not be the United States, but rather countries like Ghana and other former colonies.

He further argued that America’s attempts to reclaim industrial prominence would be unsuccessful, as global production dynamics have significantly evolved.

He highlighted the changing labor structure in the U.S., which has shifted from the era of free labor provided by enslaved Black people to a modern workforce that is unwilling to accept low wages.

Pratt suggested that no matter how high tariffs might rise, they will not be enough to restore production to the U.S., as the cost of labor in America is much higher compared to countries like China.

“Even if Trump imposes 10,000 % tariffs on the world, it will not be able to bring production back to the USA. The cost of labour per the framework of America can never be as cheap as labour in China and other industrialised countries,” he said.

He used the example of Nike shoes to illustrate this point, explaining that while the cost of production for a pair of shoes might be $1,000 in the U.S., the same product could be made for just $10 in China.

AMA questions Zoomlion fumigation contracts, demands review

0

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has raised serious concerns about the government’s fumigation contract with the Jospong Group of Companies, operators of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, alleging a lack of consultation and transparency.

According to the AMA, many of the contracts were signed without the involvement of key actors within the assemblies, making it difficult to verify the accuracy of reports submitted for fumigation exercises.

The AMA’s Director of Public Health, Florence Kuukyi, made these remarks during an engagement with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources on Monday, April 14. She called for an immediate review of the fumigation contract to ensure transparency and accountability.

“Just as the coordinating director rightly said, all these contracts are always signed at the blind side of the implementers. So most of the time, even, you are just there, and they’ll bring you a report. We’ve done this. We’ve done that,” she said.

“They don’t involve you in whatever they do. They only bring you a report to sign as a witness. You can decide to sign.”

She continued, “You can decide not to sign. But whatever it is, they will be paid. So that is why we are hammering much on the review and the repackaging of the SIP contract so that we, the implementers, actors, will also have a say in it.

“Whatever they are doing, our faces are following them. If they are doing it right, we will know. If they are not doing it right, we will know. It is there. But I have never witnessed one fumigation. That is the issue. But always they bring reports of fumigation that they’ve done.”

QNET addresses misconceptions and misrepresentations about its business model in Ghana

0

QNET, a global lifestyle and wellness direct selling company, in a press briefing organised on Monday, 14 April 2025 in Accra, has comprehensively addressed a number of negative claims arising from some traditional and social media publications, reiterating that the company is largely being misrepresented and its brand name and products misused by certain individuals for personal gains.

The Regional General Manager for QNET, Biram Fall and Global Compliance Officer, Mrs. Naana Quartey took turns clarifying issues ranging from the news on the arrest of 44 Cameroonians to media publications about victims of travel and employment scams.

QNET STRONGLY DISSOCIATES ITSELF FROM THE ARREST OF 44 CAMEROONIANS

Stated by Mr. Fall: “We are aware that some Cameroonians who were allegedly involved in internet fraud and scam, have been arrested by the police. According to the statement released by the police, they were lured to Ghana from Cameroon, on the promise of securing employment opportunities. Clearly, this is a case of individuals who acted on their own volition to scam other people using employment opportunities as a bait. QNET has nothing to do with this unlawful behaviour; they were not acting on behalf of the company.”

SOCIAL MEDIA VIDEOS OF ALLEGED “QNET OFFICES”

Mr. Fall further clarified: “QNET does not operate multiple offices across different locations in Ghana. Rather, QNET has established a QNET Training Centre in Ghana and it is operated by our partner, Bosomtwi Industries, a registered Ghanaian company. It is located at East Legon in Accra and it is the only official QNET address in Ghana. We have hosted several media briefings and events there, so, a lot of journalists are familiar with the QNET Training Centre.”

OVERSEAS JOB AND VISA SCAMS AND OTHER CASES

QNET said it was not an employment, travel or visa agency and does not promise anyone employment opportunities or work and travel visas to any country. The company warned that certain individuals exploit others with the false promise of overseas employment, and they should be reported to QNET or the law enforcement agencies.

QNET SUPPORTING LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES TO FIGHT SCAMS

QNET has helped over 250 victims report fraudulent activities tied to the misuse of QNET’s name. Additionally, in 2024, the company initiated more than 42 legal cases across Sub-Saharan Africa to address this issue.

QNET’S PUBLIC EDUCATION CAMPAIGN

In Ghana, QNET has implemented a 360-degree public and media education campaign called QNET Against Scams, to help people understand its business model better, get familiar with its products, and to be able to identify and report scam.  Across the country, QNET used billboards, radio, television, social media and online news portals to disseminate anti-scam messages to Ghanaians.

Mr. Fall concluded by reminding the media about the salient truth about QNET and its business model and encouraged them to include same in their publications about the company: “We are using this opportunity to reiterate that QNET is not an employment or travel agency. We do not promise anyone that we can secure visas or jobs for them in any country. We are deeply alarmed that miscreants have been misusing our name to make false promises to vulnerable individuals. We condemn their actions and warn the public not to fall for such scams. We also urge the public to reach out to us through our hotline if they are approached by people claiming to represent QNET and offer them jobs or visas or any such misleading claims. We will help them with taking legal action against the perpetrators.”

QNET encourages the public to verify any business claims through its official website (www.qnet.net) or report suspicious activities via WhatsApp (+233 256 630 005) or email ([email protected])

Guru (pictured) became UGSRC President in September 2024 Guru (pictured) became UGSRC President in September 2024

Ghanaian rapper and Students Representative Council (SRC) President of the University of Ghana, Maradona Yeboah Adjei, popularly known as Guru, has finally cleared the air about a viral video which left tongues wagging on social media.

The video, which went viral in February 2025, showed Guru and some other students drinking and playing games in what appeared to be the SRC office.

The video left many on social media critiquing him over what they termed as irresponsible conduct.

However, in an interview with Hitz FM on April 14, 2025, Guru stated that the office in that video was not the official SRC office as claimed.

He explained that he and his team were simply celebrating after the stress of organising an event on campus.

“It wasn’t even my office. It happened after the Akwaaba Night at Legon. We faced some challenges and were still able to sort it out. And it came with a whole lot of joy for the whole team. So, we were celebrating,” he said.

He added that he was disappointed with the false reportage and the backlash over the video.

“It wasn’t even my office. People just saw the video and tried to write contradictory things. That was wrong,” he said.

NPP’s Lawuratu apologises to Sekondi MP over $350m cocaine smuggling accusation

0

NDC MP Blay Nyameke Armah (L) and Lawuratu Musah-Saaka NDC MP Blay Nyameke Armah (L) and Lawuratu Musah-Saaka

New Patriotic Party (NPP) communicator, Lawuratu Musah-Saaka, has rendered an apology for the cocaine smuggling allegation she made against the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sekondi, Blay Nyameke Armah.

The NPP communicator had accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP of possessing 3,000 kilograms of cocaine valued at $350 million and of being involved in multinational drug trafficking, during an interview on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana.

She also implied that Armah’s son had been arrested in connection with the alleged illicit activities, and that Armah himself had fled to a neighbouring country to evade arrest.

Speaking on the same programme on Monday, April 14, 2025, Musah-Saaka begged for forgiveness and retracted her statement.

She indicated that she got it wrong with the allegations she made.

She explained that she had wrongly mentioned the NDC parliamentary candidate for 2024 when her intention was to refer to the NDC parliamentary candidate for 2020.

“In the discussion… I did not mention a name. I said ‘parliamentary candidate for Sekondi’, but in the heat of the argument, which happens to all of us, instead of saying 2020, I said 2024.

“And I must put this on record: by my upbringing, by my training, and what I believe in and stand for, I’m not above retracting and apologising for a mistake I genuinely made… I retract the bit about 2024. I didn’t mention a name. I said ‘parliamentary candidate’. In mentioning 2020, I said 2024,” she said.

Her reaction and apology come after Blay Nyameke Armah sued her and Metro TV over the allegations.

He filed a defamation lawsuit in the High Court of Justice, Accra, against three defendants: Ignite Media Group, the Jospong Group of Companies, and Lawuratu Musah-Saaka.

According to the writ, these allegations have severely damaged the plaintiff’s reputation as a lawyer, businessman, and parliamentary candidate.

The claims, he said, have also caused him emotional distress and subjected him to public ridicule, as reported by citinewsroom.com.

Armah contends that the accusations were fabricated, baseless, and intended to portray him as the leader of a criminal organisation.

In his suit, Armah seeks several legal remedies, including:

A declaration that the statements made by the first defendant were false, malicious, and defamatory;

A retraction and public apology by the defendants, issued with the same level of prominence as the original defamatory content;

A perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from publishing further defamatory statements;

General, aggravated, punitive, and compensatory damages totalling GH₵10,000,000.00;

Legal costs and any other relief the court deems appropriate.

US stock markets rise on Trump tariff rollback

Most imports from China to the US had faced a levy of 145% under Trump's new trade regime Most imports from China to the US had faced a levy of 145% under Trump’s new trade regime

US stock markets opened higher on Monday after the White House announced that imports of Chinese-made smartphones and some other electronics devices would be exempted from tariffs.

The rollback, issued early on Saturday, may end up being short-lived after President Donald Trump said these goods were simply being moved into a different tariff group or “bucket”.

The exemption – temporary or not – sent shares higher in Europe, with the UK’s FTSE 100 rising by 2% while leading indexes in France and Germany both climbed.

Apple’s share price rose sharply since as much as 80% of its iPhones intended for sale in the US are made in China.

Most imports from China to the US had faced a levy of 145% under Trump’s new trade regime. Beijing responded with its own 125% tariffs on American products coming into China.

The Trump administration is expected to announce tariffs on semiconductors on Monday, and smartphones, computers and other electronic devices exempted will fall into this category.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq index rose by 2.1% in the first few minutes of trading on Monday. The S&P 500 added 1.5% while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.2%.

Apple’s share price rose by 4.7% while chip maker Nvidia was up by 1.7%.

Despite the partial recovery on Monday’s opening, global stock markets are still lower than before Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff announcement on 2 April.

Many US and European indexes suffered historic drops followed by record rises after Trump suspended many tariffs for 90 days.

However, the gains have not reversed the losses. The S&P 500 index is 3.6% down over the last month while the FTSE 100 is 5.9% down, the German Dax is 8.7% down, and the French Cac 40 is 9.3% down.

Meanwhile, the value of the US dollar continued to fall on Monday – down 0.75% against the British pound, having dropped 2.7% against the pound since Thursday.

Arsenal fans blast Mikel Arteta over reports Partey might not be fit to face Real Madrid

0

Mikel Arteta and Thomas Partey Mikel Arteta and Thomas Partey

Some Arsenal supporters have lambasted their head coach, Mikel Arteta, over reports that Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey might not be fit enough to play against Real Madrid in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League on April 16, 2025.

During Arsenal’s Premier League match against Brentford on April 12, 2025, Partey scored but was unfortunately equalized in the second half, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

In the course of the match, Partey was substituted, and manager Arteta confirmed that the player suffered a minor injury that would be examined by the medics.

“He felt something, so we didn’t want to take any risks,” he told reporters after the game.

This sparked outrage among Arsenal fans on social media, who were livid that the coach allowed the midfielder to play for so long before a crucial game against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

They argued that Partey was one of the best players who controlled the midfield in the first leg, which Arsenal won convincingly 3-0 at the Emirates on April 8, 2025.

They called on the team’s medical team and Arteta to ensure the midfielder recovers in time to play the second leg against Madrid; otherwise, they would blame the coach if the team get eliminated from the tournament.

My wedding was very private; no phones were allowed – Harold Amenyah

0

Ghanaian actor Harold Amenyah

Ghanaian actor Harold Amenyah has opened up on the strict measures he took to maintain privacy at his wedding.

Speaking during a cooking show on UTV on April 13, 2025, Harold revealed that he intentionally kept his wedding intimate, inviting only his closest family and friends and excluding everyone from the entertainment industry.

“My wedding was very private, no phones were allowed. It was boldly written at the entrance,” he said. “The first picture that started trending that day was taken by a guest who was clearly told phones weren’t allowed. But they still decided to take pictures and videos,” he stated.

Harold emphasised that no bloggers were invited and the event was strictly limited to just 100 guests.

“The event was for just 100 people, including family, so you can imagine how small and intimate it was. If I had known a picture would be leaked and we’d end up trending, I would have invited everyone,” he added with a hint of humour.

Regarding the photo of his wife that circulated online, Harold disclosed that he still doesn’t know who leaked it.

“We’ve still not found the person who leaked the picture. I suspect the person just wanted to prove they were there and probably posted it on WhatsApp. I think it trended more because the wedding was private people were curious,” he stated

When asked why they opted for such a private event, Harold explained that it was actually his wife’s choice.

“It was my wife’s decision to make the wedding private. She didn’t fully realize the kind of pressure that comes with marrying a public figure. The controversy surrounding the wedding made her understand the magnitude of what she’s stepping into,” he added.

The actor also shared a bit about their relationship timeline.

He said he had been single for three years before meeting his wife, and exactly one year after they met, they tied the knot on the anniversary of the day they met.

“I met my wife a year before we got married. We got married on the same date we met. Some people questioned why we chose April 1, April Fool’s Day, but that was our anniversary. Before that, I had been single for about three years,” he stated.

Harold also addressed how the leak disrupted their plans.

“My wife’s picture started trending around 3 p.m., just after the ceremony. We hadn’t even released any official photos yet. We had to quickly call our photographer to release the pictures for damage control. Since phones weren’t allowed, whoever took that photo must’ve done it secretly, so of course, it wasn’t the best quality. But in the end, I believe everything that happened was meant to happen,” he concluded.

NPP’s Mohammed Zakou granted GHC100K bail

0

The Achimota Circuit Court has granted bail to Mohammed Zakou, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist, who was arrested for allegedly spreading false information about the Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

Zakou was arrested on Saturday, April 12, after making a Facebook post that read, “Rest Well Her Excellency”, accompanied by crying emojis. The post was interpreted by authorities as a false announcement of the Vice President’s death. Government communication had earlier confirmed that she had been unwell.

As a result, Zakou was charged with communicating false news. According to a prosecutor from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), the accused admitted to making the post but explained that it was intended as a gesture of goodwill towards the Vice President.

Appearing before the court on Monday, April 14, Zakou’s legal team, led by Gary Nimako Marfo, requested bail for their client.

The state did not oppose the request but asked that bail conditions be set to ensure Zakou’s availability for trial.

The judge granted bail in the sum of GHC 100,000 with two sureties. Zakou is also required to report to the investigator once every week.

The case has been adjourned to May 12, 2025, for a case management conference.

NDC gives a lot of opportunities to younger people and women – Kafui Danku

0

The Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, Kafui Danku-Pitcher, has disclosed why she decided to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Kafui told Kwame Dadzie in an interview on Joy FM‘s Showbiz A-Z that she decided to align with the NDC prior to the 2024 general election when she noticed the government at the time had not lived up to expectation.

“I used to support people in my community. I told you about the project I was doing that was stressing me based on the government at that time. So I decided to, just out of my way support people who are working towards change. So I didn’t really join until it got to a point when I said I can’t be suffering and keep quiet,” Kafui noted.

Asked which other thing attracted her to the NDC, she said “I think they give a lot of opportunities to younger people and women as well. In our 68 years [of independence] nobody has come out strongly to say a female should lead. It takes a lot based on what we see in our homes, how women are treated in this country in 2025 for someone to come and say ‘no, this woman is qualified, this woman can do it’. That is so attractive, re-echoing the voices of the little girls or the woman that you can do it, you can do better.”

Kafui Danku, who assumed office as the Executive Secretary about a month ago, also said that she was not surprised she had the appointment because she had been leading in various capacities in the past and some people had also told her she would do well when given the opportunity to serve a political office.

“It was my fans and followers who felt it was time. That I had done so well and that I had to lead an office, I had to pursue a cause, I had to do something. Even way before I was so much into the campaign, they would come and write ‘Minister of Tourism’, ‘Deputy Minister of Tourism’,” she said.

Kafui Danku-Pitcher is will run the day-to-day administration of the National Film Authority as the Executive Secretary. She reports to a governing body (the Board) headed by a well-experienced film practitioner.

The National Film Authority (NFA) is mandated to regulate, nurture, and develop the Ghanaian film industry, ensuring its legal framework and promoting its growth. This includes enforcing regulations for production, distribution, exhibition, and marketing of films, as well as promoting Ghanaian films both domestically and internationally.

Ghana to review VAT system to ease business burden – Ato Forson

0

Minister of Finance Dr Ato Forson meets World Bank Group Minister of Finance Dr Ato Forson meets World Bank Group

Minister of Finance Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that the government is set to review its Value Added Tax (VAT) system as part of broader fiscal reforms aimed at easing the burden on businesses and improving compliance.

The announcement was made during a high-level engagement between Dr Forson and the World Bank Group, where the Finance Ministry briefed Wencai Zhang, Managing Director and Chief Administrative Officer of the Bank, on Ghana’s commitment to reforming its tax framework.

According to Dr Forson, Ghana’s effective VAT rate currently stands at 21.9%, which may be the highest on the African continent.

The rate has long been criticised for complicating tax compliance and increasing operational costs for local businesses.

To address these concerns, an International Monetary Fund (IMF) Technical Assistance Mission is currently in Ghana, working alongside local authorities to guide the reform process.

The objective is to streamline the VAT system, make it more business-friendly, and enhance economic efficiency.

In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) page on April 14, 2025, and sighted by GhanaWeb Business, Dr Forson noted that a complete overhaul of the VAT system is under active consideration and is expected to be finalised ahead of the next national budget.

“We are fully aware of the challenges posed by the existing VAT structure. That is why we are undertaking a complete overhaul of the system. I can assure our partners and the Ghanaian public that this reform process will be concluded before the main budget is presented in November,” he stated.

The 2021/22 President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Yiadom Boakye Emmanuel, has donated GH¢10,000 and 50 bags of cement to traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at the Blue Light Market at Adum in Kumasi.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Yiadom, also known as ‘YB’ said he was touched by the plight of the traders especially the youth amongst them hence the donation.

“As youthful as I am, I believe we could do something to lessen the pain of my brothers and sisters,” he said. “I decided to bring my widow’s mite to support them to start their businesses and to also encourage them that God will see them through this hard period,” he said.

He also used the occasion to call on young people, to support the victims, stressing that the act of giving was more about empathy than quantity.

He further encouraged civil society organisations, private individuals and corporate institutions to lend support to the recovery efforts at the market.

Yiadom Boakye, accompanied by a group of NPP youth, toured the ruins of the market, interacting with affected traders and hawkers.

He also appealed to the traders to remain calm and await the return of the Asantehene, His Royal Majesty Osei Tutu II, who he believes would offer guidance and possible support towards the rebuilding of the market.

“Let us keep hope alive and wait patiently for what Otumfuo would say about the situation here,” he stressed.

Receiving the money, chairman of the affected traders, Joseph Bobbie Ansah, popularly known as Wofa Antwi, expressed heartfelt appreciation on behalf of the victims.

The kind benevolence of YB, he disclosed would go a long way to help them rebuild the place to enable them restart their businesses.

Africa’s top 10 natural gas consumers in 2025

0

As the world transitions to cleaner energy sources, natural gas consumption is on the rise in Africa.

The continent is rich in natural resources, with natural gas being one of its most valuable assets. Despite this wealth, Africa faces significant energy shortages, with millions lacking access to reliable electricity.

Currently, the continent’s natural gas consumption remains low compared to its potential, primarily due to infrastructural challenges and policy-related issues. However, many African countries possess natural gas reserves that could transform the energy sector, stimulate economic growth, and improve living standards.

Why natural gas matters

Increasing natural gas usage in Africa is essential for several reasons. It serves as a reliable and cleaner alternative to coal and diesel, which currently dominate the continent’s energy mix. As natural gas usage expands, it will help alleviate energy poverty, foster the development of the power industry, and promote rural electrification.

In the global shift toward greener energy sources, natural gas acts as a bridge between fossil fuels and renewables. The future of Africa’s energy landscape could significantly depend on natural gas, which offers a path toward economic growth, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

Natural gas also emits considerably less carbon than coal and oil, making it a viable option for meeting global climate commitments while supporting economic advancement.

Furthermore, many African nations heavily rely on imported petroleum, which strains foreign reserves and exposes their economies to volatile global oil prices. By harnessing indigenous natural gas reserves, these countries can reduce their dependency on imports, stabilize energy costs, and strengthen their economies.

Additionally, the development of natural gas infrastructure, such as pipelines and liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, could enhance regional energy trading and integration.

Top 10 African consumers of natural gas in 2025

According to recent data from the global analytics platform Global Firepower, which tracks energy and military metrics, the following countries are projected to be Africa’s top consumers of natural gas in 2025:

• Egypt – 60,089,000,000 Cu.M (13th globally)

• Algeria – 47,963,000,000 Cu.M (18th globally)

• Nigeria – 20,719,000,000 Cu.M (36th globally)

• Libya – 9,212,000,000 Cu.M (49th globally)

• Tunisia – 5,153,000,000 Cu.M (57th globally)

• South Africa – 4,487,000,000 Cu.M (60th globally)

• Ghana – 3,912,000,000 Cu.M (62nd globally)

• Ivory Coast – 2,635,000,000 Cu.M (73rd globally)

• Tanzania – 1,808,000,000 Cu.M (79th globally)

• Angola – 1,397,000,000 Cu.M (81st globally)

Implications for the future

The demand for natural gas in Africa is expected to continue rising due to population growth, urbanization, and industrialization. As countries strive to balance energy security with environmental sustainability, natural gas will likely remain a cornerstone of the continent’s energy strategy.

It is poised to play a crucial role in shaping a resilient, diversified, and sustainable energy future for Africa.

What Boakye Agyarko said at the Minority Caucus workshop

0

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Boakye Agyarko Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Boakye Agyarko

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Boakye Agyarko, delivered a compelling speech during an engagement with members of the Minority Caucus of the 9th Parliament.

Boakye Agyarko, who served as Minister for Energy during the first term of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, noted that although the NPP MPs currently number only 88 compared to the Majority Caucus’s 187, they can still wield significant influence in parliamentary decision-making.

He cited the example of the NPP Minority Caucus of 1997, led by the late Joseph Henry (J.H.) Mensah, who, despite leading a minority, was instrumental in shaping the direction of the House.

“We were outnumbered and seemed outgunned, but our dedicated and hardworking crop of MPs would not roll over and play dead to the NDC. Collectively, under the leadership of Hon. Joseph Henry Abbiw Mensah, they put up a gallant, intelligent, and strategic fight, so much so that it earned the admiration of the Majority side,” he recalled.

“Walk any day into that small office he had in Parliament House and you would find it filled with more NDC MPs than NPP MPs. They had come, as it were, on a pilgrimage to tap into the collective wisdom of the minority side. In so doing, the mind of the minority prevailed and directed the minds and actions of the majority side. How subtle. We did it then to great effect, we can and must do it again.”

Agyarko emphasised that the J.H. Mensah-led Minority was effective because they were factual, strategic, and proactive, qualities he urged the current Minority Caucus, led by Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, to emulate.

“We must be diligent in our research and always present superior material and arguments in the House. We must be proactive on all issues to prevent our opponents from putting us on the back foot.

“We must be factual, educative, and accurate on matters we wish to bring to the people of Ghana. We must be very strategic in the battles we pick to fight, so as not to be seen as merely opposing,” he noted.

He concluded by stressing the importance of the MPs’ role in the party’s performance in the upcoming 2028 general election.

“On the broader front, our fighting force for the reclamation of electoral and political territory is now largely dependent on you, our parliamentary party. There is a herculean task ahead of you.

“These tasks are to be performed in an environment marked by all manner of shortages, money, material resources, quality human capital, time, and patience, all while your constituents are constantly snapping at your heels,” he concluded.

‘It’s nonsense to pay church musicians’ – Dag Heward-Mills

0

Founder and General Overseer of Lighthouse Chapel International, Dag Heward-Mills Founder and General Overseer of Lighthouse Chapel International, Dag Heward-Mills

Founder and General Overseer of Lighthouse Chapel International, Dag Heward-Mills, has expressed his displeasure with the practice of musicians demanding payment after singing or playing instruments in church.

In a video circulating on social media, Heward-Mills is seen preaching to his congregation, firmly stating that he does not support paying church members for musical performances.

“Watch out for people who do things for money. In my church, I said I am not going to pay people to play instruments, because I play all the instruments. I play drums, piano, and guitar,” he said.

Due to his dissatisfaction with this practice, the renowned preacher explained that he established a music school in his church to train members, particularly children, in playing instruments.

“I got all the children in the church and set up a music school where every child must learn how to play the piano. So now, all the children in my church can play the piano.

“Nobody can come and bully us in church by asking to be paid before singing. It’s nonsense. Here, we don’t pay, because you love Jesus. If not, go,” he stressed.

His comments come in the wake of similar sentiments expressed by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, General Overseer of Christ Embassy.

He recently criticised secular musicians who began their careers in the church, claiming that no one has taken advantage of the church more than those artists.

‘Bawku conflict was active before NDC came to power’

0

Donatus Akamugri Atanga, the Upper East Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri Atanga, the Upper East Regional Minister

The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has made it clear that the prolonged Bawku conflict was still active before the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assumed power, contrary to claims suggesting otherwise.

According to him, the NDC government under President John Dramani Mahama took over the conflict in its active phase and has since been working to bring it under control.

“When the NDC came to power, the Bawku conflict was not dormant. It was still in an active mood, and the president and his government have been trying their best to bring it down,” the minister explained.

He said, in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, that the situation was not escalating under Mahama’s administration, as some people have suggested.

Instead, he said efforts are being made to ensure lasting peace.

“President Mahama was simply telling the people that he would do his best to find a lasting solution to the conflict. He has already begun taking steps toward that goal,” he added.

Atanga also disclosed the role of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in the peace efforts, describing him as a neutral figure whose involvement, is expected to help resolve the crisis.

“That’s why Otumfuo has been tasked to step in and tap into his conflict resolution experience to bring lasting peace to Bawku,” he said.

Touching on the recent killing of two police officers at Poyamirea, a community near Binduri in the Upper East Region, the minister clarified that the officers were not part of any security operation in Bawku.

“They were not policemen operating around the Bawku area. The two officers were stationed at Bongo and not posted to the conflict zone,” he explained.

Atanga further dismissed suggestions that the attack was carried out by youth targeting the police.

“It’s not like the youth went around attacking police officers. The officers came from Bongo into the area and were unfortunately shot. They were not assigned there, and we don’t yet understand why the shooting happened,” he noted.

He urged the public to remain patient as investigations continue, stating that initial arrests had been made but none had been sustained.

“Negotiations are still ongoing, and we hope that things will cool down. Otumfuo’s team are also working to help resolve the matter,” he added.

Atanga assured residents of the region that security personnel are on the ground not only to maintain law and order but also to support the mediation process led by the Asantehene.

“There is currently a bit of calm in the area, and we are hopeful that with Otumfuo’s involvement, a lasting resolution will be found,” he concluded.

According to the Union, the scheme is fraught with implementation flaws that undermine its core objective of supporting renters.

In a letter signed by Secretary-General Frederick Opoku and addressed to the Minister of Works and Housing, Kenneth Adjei, the Union noted that the scheme has failed to benefit the majority of Ghanaians, rendering it ineffective.

“We acknowledge the necessity of this policy, but we disagree with the current state of its implementation, which has left the majority of Ghanaians in dire need of the services the scheme is meant to provide,” the letter stated.

Among the key concerns raised were high application fees and exorbitant interest rates.

The Union condemned the GH¢100 non-refundable application fee, calling it exploitative and unreasonably high. They also criticised the 12% annual interest rate on rent loans, describing it as excessive.

“This is not just about fairness; it’s about accountability and the responsible use of public funds,” the letter emphasised.

The Union proposed that suspending the scheme would allow for critical reforms to make the program more inclusive and effective for Ghanaians.

The National Rental Assistance Programme (NRAP) was launched on January 31, 2023, as part of the government’s efforts to address housing challenges and provide financial support for rent advances.

‘I will never change my style of play for any coach’ – Mohammed Kudus

Kudus is a player of West Ham Kudus is a player of West Ham

West Ham midfielder Mohammed Kudus has reaffirmed his commitment to his unique playing style, insisting that it is non-negotiable and central to his identity as a footballer.

The Ghanaian international has occasionally faced criticism from fans who believe he should adapt his style to suit the preferences of his coaches.

However, in an interview with the Premier League, the former Ajax star made it clear that he will not compromise what makes him special.

“We are all different, and we all have our impact in the world. There’s not a single day I’ll ever change my style of play for any coach, anybody, whatsoever,” Kudus said.

He explained that his approach to football reflects his personality and allows him to express himself fully on the pitch.

“Expressing myself on the pitch and playing how I play is just who I am, and that will never change. At the end of the day, I’m the boy from Nima living his dream, and maybe people can find inspiration in that by being themselves,” he added.

Despite his confidence, Kudus has endured a relatively challenging second season at West Ham. The 24-year-old has recorded just three goals and two assists in 26 Premier League appearances so far.

‘A Complete Blockage to Justice’ – NDC’s Mustapha Gbande Slams Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo

0

Mustapha Gbande, Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, alleging that she lacks the integrity required to lead Ghana’s judiciary as reported by Modern Ghana.

Speaking on Woezor TV, Gbande emphasized that Torkonoo’s leadership is detrimental to the justice system.

“She doesn’t have the gravitas, the fortification, the integrity, or the credibility,” he stated. “She shouldn’t be there, because in the eyes of every Ghanaian, she’s politically exposed.”

Gbande’s comments came in response to former President John Dramani Mahama’s submission of three petitions to the Council of State, which called for the Chief Justice’s removal.

He accused Justice Torkonoo of obstructing justice and serving as a political shield for appointees of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

“She is a whole machinery — a window of escape set up by former President Akufo-Addo to protect persons who should be sent to court,” he claimed.

According to Gbande, Torkonoo’s conduct has undermined the impartiality of the judiciary.

Further criticizing the response to the petitions, Gbande pointed out the political bias in the support for Torkonoo.

“Only the NPP defended her,” he said, revealing that the uproar following the submission of the petitions was predominantly from members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with no neutral voices backing the Chief Justice.

Gbande’s remarks have ignited political debate, with critics questioning Torkonoo’s role in Ghana’s judicial independence and her ability to remain neutral in a polarized political environment.

Lack of leadership caused failure of Planting for Food and Jobs – Eric Opoku

0

Eric Opoku, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, has attributed the failure of the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) programme — introduced by the previous administration — to poor leadership and weak implementation structures.

The PFJ initiative was launched in 2017 under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration, with the goal of boosting the production of selected food crops and promoting agriculture as a profitable business venture.

However, according to the Minister, both Phase I and Phase II of the programme yielded limited results and failed to achieve the intended goal of ensuring national food security.

On Saturday, April 12, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama launched the Feed Ghana Programme, a new flagship initiative with similar goals to PFJ but with renewed strategies to drive food production, reduce imports, and ensure long-term food sufficiency.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, April 14, 2025, Mr. Opoku emphasized that the previous programme lacked the necessary leadership to drive meaningful outcomes.

“You know that when you have an agenda and you come to your strategies, one of your responsibility is to rally people behind the strategy to make it happen at all course.

“Once I have my agenda and I have made my strategies clear, it is my responsibility to mobilise the people around to ensure that it happens. If leadership decides not to be part of the implementation then certainly you wont get the result.

“But if you start giving out the right instruction and you monitor every stage of the implementation, the status quo will change. Otherwise, you end up sacking everybody and bringing in new people. But it is all about leadership.

“When you come to the ministry, you will see for yourself. Some of the people are willing to work but the leadership must be there to ensure that we get the best out of them,” he stated.

Court documents shared on social media suggest the case has been filed at the Commercial Division of the High Court in Accra. Sarkodie, known privately as Michael Owusu Addo, claims the ad violates his image rights and damages his reputation.

The writ also argued that the campaign created confusion, especially because he was currently a brand ambassador for First Bank, a direct competitor of Ecobank. His team believes the use of a lookalike could harm his business deals and public image.

In the writ, Sarkodie is asking the court to declare that Ecobank breached his image and intellectual property rights, stop the bank from using any image or likeness of him in future campaigns, order Ecobank to remove all ads connected to the case, and pay him damages for the harm caused

The legal document also warns that if Ecobank does not respond to the court within eight days, the case may go ahead without them. The drama has got many Ghanaians debating on who is right or wrong.

Govt targets 600 new enterprises by 2028 – Julius Debrah

0

The Government of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to bolstering the business sector, aiming to establish over 600 new enterprises by the end of President John Dramani Mahama’s current term.

This initiative is closely tied to the upcoming Kwahu Business Forum, scheduled for Saturday, April 19, 2025, which seeks to facilitate engagement between financial institutions and the private sector to explore investment opportunities and policy support.

Addressing journalists on Monday, April 14, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah emphasized the forum’s potential to inject capital into the economy and generate sustainable employment. He noted that the establishment of new businesses would stimulate local economies, create jobs, and enhance tax revenues, thereby contributing to national economic growth.

Julius Debrah highlighted that each participating bank at the forum is expected to support at least five viable projects this year, with plans to continue this support annually.

This approach is projected to result in the creation of over 600 enterprises by the end of the four-year term, aligning with President Mahama’s vision of fostering a robust and inclusive business environment.

The Kwahu Business Forum is designed to serve as a strategic platform for dialogue between financial institutions and private sector players, fostering collaboration to enhance Ghana’s business environment.

It aims to bring together stakeholders to discuss innovative financing models and strategies to strengthen the country’s business climate.

“A lot of funds are going come into the economy. Because once a business starts, it stimulates the local economy where the company will be cited, and people get employed. They get money, and they pay their taxes, they buy other products from other people, and then our economy is stimulating and growing. And so I think what he intends to achieve is that he wants to grow businesses.

“He wants to be remembered for one thing that during his tenure, at least if for nothing at all, he brought up the conversation, invited business people, and asked them to start something, not just starting but encouraging banks to give them the necessary support so that we will develop our nation.

He added, “At least each of the banks that will show up are going to pick five projects, five bankable projects for this year. And they expect that next year, when we return to Kwahu, they will invite those five people that they helped or assisted to come and testify.

“So if this continues for the next five years, each bank taking a minimum of five people, five enterprises to support. The following year doing same. I’m sure by the end of his four-year tenure, we’ll have over 600 enterprises that we can pinpoint and see that these are things that President Mahama started.”

If he didn’t have evidence of cocaine and money, what was he talking about? — Adu-Amankwah

0

According to a report from JoyNews, the Executive Secretary of the National Interest Movement, Susan Adu-Amankwah, has raised concerns over how the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence Committee, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, handled allegations about two aircraft allegedly bringing illicit cargo into Ghana.

Speaking during an appearance on Joy News’ Newsfile, Adu-Amankwah questioned the rationale and responsibility behind the MP’s public statements, particularly given the absence of any concrete proof to support his claims that the aircraft in question were involved in transporting illegal substances and currency.

She emphasized that making such serious accusations without presenting credible evidence could lead the public to assume there was more to the story than has been revealed.

“If he didn’t have evidence of cocaine and of money, what was he talking about?” she asked pointedly.

Adu-Amankwah criticized what she saw as an inappropriate use of political authority, warning that such actions risk tarnishing Ghana’s reputation on the international stage.

She noted that as a member of Parliament, Fordjour holds a privileged position and is expected to act responsibly.

Instead of broadcasting his suspicions through media channels, she argued that he should have taken the matter to the appropriate national security authorities for proper investigation.

She also expressed disappointment at how such issues are handled in the public domain, especially when they risk portraying Ghana in a negative light internationally.

In her view, national identity overrides political affiliation when it comes to how the country is perceived abroad.

Adu-Amankwah stressed that reckless public commentary from high-profile individuals reflects on the entire nation, not just their political parties.

Addressing the broader issue of drug trafficking, she expressed deep concern about the ongoing threat of substance abuse among Ghanaian youth.

She pointed to the devastating impact that narcotics already have in local communities and cautioned against further exacerbating the problem.

While she called on the government to thoroughly investigate any credible leads related to drug smuggling or other criminal activity, she also made it clear that baseless claims could do more harm than good.

According to her, individuals in leadership positions must act with caution and integrity, ensuring that any public statements are backed by facts rather than assumptions.

GoldBod becomes sole buyer and exporter of ASM gold under new law

The statement also directed all foreigners involved in local gold trading market to exit by April 30 The statement also directed all foreigners involved in local gold trading market to exit by April 30

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has officially become the sole entity permitted to buy, sell, assay, and export gold from the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) sector in Ghana, following the passage of the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140).

The new law, which was passed by Parliament on March 29, 2025, and assented to by the President on April 2, 2025, renders all previously issued gold trading licenses, granted by the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) or the Minister responsible for Mines, invalid.

In a statement issued by GoldBod on April 14, 2025, the general public was informed that, effective immediately, only the GoldBod is permitted to export ASM gold from Ghana.

Furthermore, only GoldBod or its licensed buyers, aggregators, or service providers are allowed to purchase or deal in gold in the country.

However, in a move to ensure a smooth transition and honor existing contractual obligations, the Ghana Gold Board has granted a temporary window allowing individuals or entities with valid PMMC or ministerial licenses to continue gold purchases and exports until April 30, 2025.

“For the time being, all licensed persons or entities buying gold from the

local market, must do so in Ghana cedis and at a price calculated based on

the Bank of Ghana Reference Rate published on www.bog.gov.gh,” the statement read.

“Any Ghanaian or a fully-owned Ghanaian company whose license has ceased

to be valid and/or any Ghanaian who is desirous of dealing in gold, is encouraged to apply for a license under the Ghana Gold Board Act (ACT 1140), 2025 effective, Tuesday, 22nd April, 2025,” it added.

Additionally, applications can be submitted online via the GoldBod’s official website (to be launched on the same date) or physically at the GoldBod Licensing and Regulations office in Accra.

Foreigners ordered to exit local gold market

The statement also directed all foreigners involved in the local gold trading market to exit by April 30, 2025, warning that failure to comply will constitute a punishable offense under the new law. Foreign entities interested in purchasing gold may apply to buy directly from the GoldBod.

The Board stressed that effective May 1, 2025, it will be an offense for any person or entity to purchase or deal in gold in Ghana without a valid license issued by the Ghana Gold Board.

The move is part of the government’s broader efforts to tighten regulation within the gold trading sector, reduce smuggling, and ensure that Ghana fully benefits from its mineral resources.

Foreigners ordered to exit Ghana’s local gold market by April 30

0

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has directed all foreign nationals involved in the local gold trading market to cease operations and exit the sector by April 30, 2025.

According to a statement from the Board on April 14, 2025, foreigners will no longer be permitted to participate in local gold buying. However, they may apply to buy or off-take gold directly from GoldBod through official channels.

“All foreigners are hereby notified to exit the local gold trading market not

later than 30th April, 2025. A foreigner may however apply to the GoldBod to

buy or off-take gold directly from the GoldBod,” the statement read.

The directive forms part of the implementation of the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), which seeks to streamline and formalize gold trade in the country.

Effective May 1, 2025, it will be a criminal offense for any individual or entity to purchase or deal in gold without a license issued by GoldBod.

The Board has also warned that strict penalties will apply to violators.

The new law aims to eliminate illegal trading, boost transparency, and ensure that Ghana benefits fully from its gold resources.

Why we drew against Bechem – Prosper Ogum explains

0

Asante Kotoko head coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum has admitted that a lack of rhythm and difficulty breaking down a compact Bechem United was the cause of their 1-1 stalemate.

Speaking after the match, Ogum praised the competitive nature of the game but acknowledged the tactical approach of Bechem United, who set up defensively and looked to hit on the counter.

“It was a nice game. I think Bechem came defensively to stay low and then go on counter. They tried to put a lot of men behind the ball which made it very difficult for us to penetrate,” Ogum explained. “We tried a few times and we were able to unlock it, but we couldn’t score. It was a good game.”

Bechem United’s resolute defending frustrated the Porcupine Warriors for large spells of the match, and although Kotoko found the back of the net once, it wasn’t enough to secure all three points.

Ogum admitted that his team was not at its fluid best, attributing the result to a lack of cohesion in play.

“Bechem United is a very good side, but I think we didn’t find our rhythm, we didn’t find our flow and I think that is the main reason,” he said.

Kotoko, despite the draw, still lead the table but they are tied on 47 points alongside Bibiani Gold Stars.
