0

Karela United returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Bechem United at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale on Sunday in a Ghana Premier League week seven clash.

Yahaya Rahaman opened the scoring for Karela United in the 16th minute, connecting to a cross from Ali Alhassan.

Bless Ege sealed the victory from the penalty spot in the 41st minute after being fouled and electing himself to take the kick, which he converted confidently.

Karela United will next face Asante Kotoko in Kumasi on November 2, while Bechem United host Nations FC two days earlier.

Ada Salt Priests and Clan Leaders Accuse Traditional Council of Betrayal Over Songor Lagoon; Demand Government Intervention Against ElectroChem Takeover

The Office of the Libi Wornor (Salt Priest) of Ada, together with the Terkpebiawe Clan and several community organizations, has accused the Ada Traditional Council of aiding businessman Daniel McKorley’s company, ElectroChem Ghana Limited, in what they describe as an “orchestrated attempt” to seize the Songor Lagoon — the ancestral and economic lifeline of the Ada people.

At a well-attended press conference held at Lenobinya in Big Ada, representatives of the Libi Wornor, the Okor Priests (kingmakers of the Ada Paramount Stool), the Ada Songor Lagoon Association (ASLA), the Dangme East Salt Producers Association (DESPA), and residents of the Songor enclave communities expressed deep anger over what they termed as a systematic takeover of the lagoon with the backing of the Ada Traditional Council.

Speaking on the theme “Protest Against Ada Traditional Council’s Persistent Attempts in Supporting McDan’s ElectroChem to Snatch the Major Source of Livelihood of the People of Ada Songor Enclave Communities,” the groups said the Traditional Council’s alliance with the private company represents “a betrayal of the trust of the people” and “a desecration of Ada’s cultural heritage.”

The statement, read on behalf of the Libi Wornor by Hon. Ebenezer Adjaottor, alleged that the Songor Lagoon, which provides livelihood for more than 140,000 residents across 60 communities, has been handed over to ElectroChem under questionable circumstances.

According to the group, the lagoon, which has sustained Ada’s artisanal salt production for generations, is not just an economic resource but the “heartbeat and essence of the Ada people’s existence.”

The group recalled that similar attempts to monopolize salt production in the 1970s and 1980s under the then Progress Party government were resisted, leading to the promulgation of PNDC Law 287 in 1985 by late President Jerry John Rawlings to protect local salt producers through the Master Plan for Salt Development.

However, they claim the former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo “abused his powers” in 2019 by leasing the entire lagoon—from Sege Nakomkope to Elavanyo—to Mr. Daniel McKorley and his company, ElectroChem Ghana Limited. They described the move as “a deliberate attempt by powerful political and business interests to monopolize Ghana’s salt industry.”

The Libi Wornor’s Office further accused the Ada Traditional Council of “ignoring the plight of their own people” by aligning with ElectroChem for personal gain. They cited the council’s visit to the presidency in June 2023, where chiefs reportedly requested state security to clamp down on so-called “illegal miners,” referring to artisanal salt producers defending their rights to the lagoon.

The groups alleged that since ElectroChem began operations, violence and intimidation have become rampant in the Songor enclave. They cited the shooting death of Korletey Agormeda in November 2022 as a case in point, describing it as a result of state-backed suppression of community protests.

They also accused the council of sidelining dissenting traditional leaders, including Nene Korley IV, a gazetted divisional chief, for opposing the deal with ElectroChem.

While ElectroChem has publicly claimed to have created between 3,000 and 7,000 jobs for locals, the Songor groups dismissed the figures as “propaganda.”
According to them, less than 300 people were actually employed, many of whom were recently laid off without proper compensation. It reportedly took a 45-day protest before the company agreed to a payment schedule for redundancy packages, promising to settle the arrears in phases between October 2025 and March 2026.

They demanded transparency, calling on ElectroChem to publish tax and social security records of its alleged employees to prove the company’s employment claims.

The coalition called on the government to intervene immediately by enforcing the Master Plan for Salt Development and the recommendations of the Amissah Commission, which advocate an inclusive model allowing both local artisanal miners and large-scale investors to coexist.

They also questioned the credibility of a Parliamentary Committee report on the operations of ElectroChem, chaired by Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea, arguing that the Speaker of Parliament had declared the report insufficient and had set up three specialized subcommittees to conduct a more thorough investigation.

“We find it unjust, undemocratic, and untraditional that a communal resource should be placed in the hands of one company and a few elites,” the statement emphasized. “The Songor Lagoon belongs to the people of Ada, not to McDan or any political clique.”

The group issued a strong caution to the Ada Traditional Council against what they described as attempts to mislead former President John Dramani Mahama ahead of the 2024 elections. They vowed to resist any further effort to privatize the lagoon and announced plans to embark on peaceful demonstrations and picketing to defend their ancestral rights.

“We are not against investment or development,” they stated, “but development must come with dignity, inclusion, and justice for all, not the exploitation of our land for the enrichment of a few.”

“The Songor Lagoon is our heritage, our lifeline, and our future. It shall not be sold, seized, or surrendered — not today, not tomorrow.”

The Ada Songor Lagoon, Ghana’s largest natural salt lagoon, has been the center of a long-running ownership and management controversy spanning decades. ElectroChem Ghana Limited, part of the McDan Group, was granted a 15-year lease by government to revamp salt production. While supporters say the project will modernize the salt industry and boost exports, many locals accuse the company of displacing communities and destroying livelihoods that have existed for generations.

Minority demands submission of flagship programme documents to Parliament

0

The Minority in Parliament has renewed its call on the government to submit to Parliament the policy documents covering its flagship programmes for proper scrutiny.

According to the caucus, none of the eleven flagship initiatives launched so far by the Mahama administration has been laid before the House for consideration — a situation they say undermines Parliament’s oversight role and deprives the public of details about the initiatives.

Addressing journalists in Parliament, the Ranking Member on the Economy and Development Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, urged the government to present the documents for parliamentary review.

“As at now you have 11 programmes and initiatives that this government has launched on various platforms and Ministers have been given hundreds of millions of Ghana cedis ostensibly to go and execute them.

“I can take you through the list: The One Million Coders Programme, The 24 Hour Economy Programme, The Jobs Export Programme, The Adwumawura Programme, The National Apprenticeship Programme, The Tree for Life Programme, Accra Reset Programme, The One Child One Tree Initiative, The Ghana Infrastructure Plan, The Free Tertiary for Persons with Disability and then The No-Fee-Stress Policy. These are about 11 programmes that the government has launched and our argument is that not one of them has had a programme document that tells you, what is the target, what is the selection criteria, what is the result framework, what are the key performance indicators, so that you can exercise oversight. Even if not just by us Members of Parliament, you the media do you know details? Do Civil Society members know the details? Does the general public know? How does even an ordinary person know and access? So it is important that the programme documents are properly laid before parliament so that the work of oversight can start.

“My intelligence suggests that it’s even been discussed at Cabinet and the President has instructed that the Ministers should bring the programme documents to parliament. So I think it’s important, we don’t have to run away from it. The programme documents need to come so that now parliament is ceased with it and then oversight can start.”

Jackson University College: Redefining teacher education and transforming underserved communities

0

By Yussif Ibrahim

Kumasi, Oct. 26, GNA -Jackson University College (JUC) continues to distinguish itself as a beacon of innovation and excellence in Ghana’s teacher education landscape.

At its 13th Congregation held in Kumasi, 877 newly trained teachers were conferred with degrees and diplomas, ready to take on the noble task of shaping the nation’s future through transformative teaching.

The ceremony, held under the theme: ‘Inspiring Excellence, Driving Change,” celebrated graduates who pursued Bachelor of Education programmes in Upper Primary, Early Grade, and JHS-French, as well as the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).

Of the total, 629 specialised in upper-primary education, 178 in early-grade education, and 14 in French, reflecting the school’s strategic emphasis on addressing critical teacher shortages in foundational learning and language education.

Mrs Theodosia Wilhelmina Jackson, Principal of JUC, reaffirmed the institution’s mission to produce competent, compassionate, and future-ready teachers, especially for Ghana’s underserved and rural communities.

“Our graduates are not only trained to teach; they are trained to transform. “We prepare them to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and communities in need,” she said.

A hallmark of Jackson University College’s training model is its “Semester-Supported Teaching” initiative, a structured field experience programme that bridges the gap between theory and practice.

Student teachers are placed in real classroom environments to work alongside experienced mentors, a process that accounts for 30 percent of their final grade.

Through this immersive approach, trainees gain critical hands-on experience, learning to adapt teaching methods to varied learning styles and real-world challenges.

Complementary initiatives such as micro-teaching, macro-teaching, and action research projects further reinforce the university’s practical focus.

Recognised as Ghana’s first private college of education to fully adopt blended and distance learning, JUC operates through 30 learning centers across 13 regions.

The institution leverages modern digital tools to make teacher education accessible to learners from all backgrounds, particularly those in remote or disadvantaged areas.

One of the most inspiring initiatives of the university college is the Education Behind Bars Programme, a groundbreaking project that provides inmates with access to quality teacher education.

This initiative reflects Jackson University College’s belief in the power of education to rehabilitate and restore dignity, offering incarcerated individuals a second chance at life through learning and service.

Mrs Jackson also highlighted the university’s strong integration of Information Technology (IT) into its curriculum, equipping students with digital literacy and employable skills beyond the classroom.

Mr Stephen Kwaku Owusu, a representative of the Ministry of Education, praised Jackson University College for its trailblazing role in teacher education and digital learning.

He urged graduates to measure their success not merely by their certificates but by the impact they make on their communities.

“The teacher is not just a dispenser of knowledge. They are mentors, role models, and innovators who nurture the next generation to think critically, dream boldly, and act responsibly,” he stated.

He called on the graduates to bring hope and vision to children in remote and under-resourced communities by helping them aspire to become professionals in all fields of endeavor.

Minority accuses gov’t of attempting to criminalise free speech

0

The Minority in Parliament has expressed concern over what it describes as an attempt by the government to criminalise free speech through a proposed new legislation.

According to the caucus, a draft bill currently in circulation seeks to make it an offence to post or share comments in online chat groups that may be considered offensive or inciteful.

The Minority believes the move stems from President John Dramani Mahama’s recent directive to trace the IP addresses of individuals spreading hate speech or inciting violence, with the aim of holding them accountable.

Addressing journalists, the Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi and former Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, cautioned the government against what he described as a dangerous encroachment on free expression.

“What we’re seeing appears to be a draft, and they want to consult on that draft. From what I have seen, this draft is dangerous. Though not surprising, because the President first announced that they are going to use the national security apparatus to go after people who make comments on social media that they consider, for whatever reason, whether it is under hate speech or whatever they consider unfavourable, they are going to search for your IP address and get the security apparatus to go after you. The President said it.”

He added, “It’s not surprising that his Minister is following up with a draft bill with such wild provisions in there. Over the last few decades, various countries have been moving away from criminalising speech. There are other remedies for speech that may be deemed unfavourable. It’s a very dangerous encroachment on the area of free speech. The government needs to tread cautiously.”

One of the 21st Century’s Best Sci-Fi Cult Classics Released 24 Years Ago Today (& It’s Easy To Stream)

0

A weird and deeply provocative movie hit theaters exactly twenty-four years ago, and it wasn’t the instant hit it’s remembered as today. Back in October 2001, this sci-fi thriller landed quietly, with almost no marketing buzz and little audience traction. It tried to blend teenage drama with dark humor in a way that took people a while to even categorize. You could easily argue it was way ahead of its time simply for being that bold. At the time, it wasn’t an easy sell — too strange, too hard to explain. But over the years, it became a full-on cult classic, frequently revisited and praised, especially among die-hard sci-fi fans.

Donnie Darko was directed by Richard Kelly and became synonymous with the term “cult film” for a reason. The story centers on a troubled teen named Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) who begins having visions of a man in a creepy rabbit suit warning him that the world will end in 28 days. It sounds absurd (and it absolutely is), but that’s the whole point. The movie leans into its weirdness, embracing its irrational tone instead of trying to make sense. It’s about paranoia, loneliness, existential dread, and the feeling that everything is falling apart — something every teenager can probably relate to. But what sets it apart from other early 2000s sci-fi movies is that it never hands you the answers. Everything is subjective, and in a time when movies seem to overexplain every plot point, Donnie Darko feels like a masterpiece for doing the opposite.

The film plays with ideas of time travel and parallel universes, but it never tries to spell them out for you. You’re thrown into the mystery alongside Donnie and left to figure out what’s real and what’s pure delusion. Is Donnie trapped in a tangent universe? Is he mentally ill? Or is the world actually ending? Those questions are what drive the story and what keep the film so intriguing decades later. While most sci-fi projects try to sound logical, Donnie Darko embraces the unknown. It wants you to leave confused and curious, not comforted.

Also, everything about the movie reinforces that feeling — especially the aesthetic. The suburban setting feels deceptively ordinary, contrasting perfectly with Donnie’s psychological chaos. His parents trying to understand him, the eccentric teacher, and the local celebrity and motivational speaker — all of it subtly mocks the social hypocrisy of that era. And then there’s the soundtrack, which has practically become its own character. Songs like “The Killing Moon” and “Mad World” don’t just set the tone; they define it. It’s one of those soundtracks that immediately takes you back to the film the second you hear it.

How Did Donnie Darko Become a Cult Classic?

Today, Donnie Darko is a classic, but in the early 2000s, it had a rough start — partly because of the post-9/11 atmosphere. The story involves plane crashes, which made it a tough sell in that sensitive moment. As a result, it barely made a blip at the box office. But the movie didn’t end there. Thanks to late-night screenings, word of mouth, and the rise of home video, it slowly built an audience. Over time, fans began sharing theories and dissecting every scene online, turning it into one of the internet’s earliest cult obsessions. Even now, people still write detailed analyses trying to decode what really happened in the story.

In 2004, Kelly released a director’s cut with added scenes and extra explanations as an attempt to make things clearer. But that move divided fans. Why? Because most still prefer the original cut, precisely because it keeps things ambiguous. The beauty of Donnie Darko is that it doesn’t want to be fully understood. Every detail from the jet engine to the book and the cryptic messages exists to spark speculation, not provide closure. In short, the film delivered what every movie should: not just a story, but an experience.

Two decades later, the production still feels fresh. Its blend of sci-fi and teenage angst remains bold, and its portrayal of emotional confusion still hits hard. It’s not just a “time travel movie;” Donnie Darko is about fear — fear of being forgotten, of having no purpose, of living in a world that always feels on the verge of collapse. That’s why it still connects. It’s dark, it’s weird, and it’s deeply human all at once. And when you think about it, it truly is one of the most essential cult classics of the 21st century because no one has managed to make anything quite like it since.

Donnie Darko is, simply put, brilliant. If a movie about a teenager and a giant rabbit can still spark debates about the meaning of existence 24 years later, then clearly, something about it worked better than anyone could’ve imagined.

Donnie Darko is available on Hulu.

NSMQ2025: GSTS through to quarterfinals after riddle scare from Nkwatia Presby

0

It was a nail-biting contest at the SGS Auditorium as Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) fought hard to secure a quarterfinal spot in the 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz after surviving a fierce riddle challenge from Nkwatia Presby SHS.

The Kwahu Magicians, as Nkwatia Presby are affectionately called, gave GSTS a tough run, especially in the riddles, where they impressively picked three in a row, leaving the crowd in awe and briefly threatening to overturn the lead.

But the Western Zonal Champions held their composure, finishing the contest with 50 points, narrowly ahead of Nkwatia Presby’s 45 points, while Ashaiman SHS ended with 28 points.

In the Problem of the Day, GSTS managed seven out of 10, with both Nkwatia Presby and Ashaiman SHS following closely with six out of 10 each.

The victory sees GSTS progress confidently to the quarterfinals, where they’ll hope to build on their form and keep their championship dreams alive.

Our Lady of Grace SHS shocks Bishop Herman College to claim seeded status at NSMQ

0

Another National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) giant has fallen. Bishop Herman College, one of the respected seeded schools, has lost its spot to the fast-rising Our Lady of Grace Senior High School in one of the most dramatic contests of this year’s quiz.

The contest, which also featured Ejisuman SHS, began with a tight first round as both Bishop Herman and Our Lady of Grace ended neck and neck with 18 points apiece. Ejisuman trailed behind with nine points.

But everything changed in the speed race of round two. Our Lady of Grace (OLAG) dominated the buzzer, answering question after question to build a commanding 39 points, leaving Bishop Herman at 18 and Ejisuman just a point behind with 17.

Though OLAG struggled slightly in the problem-solving round, managing only one out of 10, the wide gap from earlier rounds kept them firmly in the lead. Bishop Herman scored five in that round, while Ejisuman failed to register a point.

By the fourth round, Our Lady of Grace had extended their lead to 50 points, with Bishop Herman chasing at 36 and Ejisuman on 27.

And when the final bell rang, there was no doubt about the result — OLAG had dethroned a giant. They sealed the contest with 56 points, while Bishop Herman finished with 39 and Ejisuman with 27.

This marks only Our Lady of Grace’s second appearance in the National Science and Maths Quiz, and they’ve already earned a place among the seeded schools — a feat that sends a strong message to Ghana’s traditional powerhouses.

President announces increase in DACF allocation for Persons with Disabilities

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Oct 25, GNA – The Government will increase the District Assemblies’ Common Fund (DACF) allocation for Persons with Disabilities from three per cent to five per cent starting next year, President John Dramani Mahama has announced.

The President announced this when he formally launched the Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disability Initiative at the Accra College of Education.

He said the Disability Desks in every District Assembly in consultation with the local branch of the Ghana Federation of the Disabled, would prepare a budget each year for how they intend to spend the five per cent that had been allocated to them.

The President said government would launch dedicated programmes for women with disability, to provide them with entrepreneurship grants and leadership training.

Touching on accessibility and infrastructure, he said the Government would enforce the Ghana Accessibility Standards for all public buildings and facilities.

He said 2026 would be 10 years since the enforcement of accessibility to public buildings was meant to be enforced; therefore, in the Amendment Act to Act 715, they would increase the term of imprisonment for persons who refuse to comply.

“And we will also increase the fines that they have to pay. Act 715 says the penalty for not complying is three months in prison or GHS600.00. GHS600.00 is too small,” President Mahama said.

“So, in the new Act, we are going to increase the penalty and maybe we increase the imprisonment from three months to six months.”

President Mahama said the Government intends to introduce a system for distributing rechargeable motorized wheelchairs to Persons with Disabilities.

He said he had directed all Ministers of State to review their obligations under the Disability Act and present action plans for full compliance within the shortest possible time.

“Every year, as part of the obligation of Ministers, you have to provide a report on how they’ve complied with the Disability Act.”

He called on the private sector, civil society, development partners, universities, and the media to join hands in this noble mission.

“Let us transform our national attitudes from commiseration to partnership,” the President said.

2026 FIFA World Cup: Dunfermline’s Nurudeen Abdulai aims to gatecrash Ghana’s final squad – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Dunfermline new boy Nurudeen Abdulai believes consistent performances for his Scottish side can catapult him to gatecrash Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.

The centre-back has earned rave reviews for his recent displays for the side he joined early September from Ghana Premier League outfit Medeama.

Abdulai spent five weeks observing from the sidelines as an unused substitute and when the opportunity came against Queen’s Park on 4 October he grabbed it and excelled.

He has since managed to keep three clean sheets and remains focused on the bigger dream.

Abdulai told the club’s website: “Playing for Dunfermline is a big platform for me. My country can always call me at any time. Once I am here I need to improve more, so that I can get called up for the World Cup.

“The national manager knows I am still here because in Ghana they watch a lot of Spanish football, a lot of English football and they also watch Scottish as well,” he explains. “When I was in Ghana I was watching Scottish football, so they know I am here and they know I am in a good team too. I know people watched me in last Friday night’s game as I had a lot of messages.”

He made Ghana’s squad during the World Cup qualifiers and was an unused substitute on three occasions.

“I am very happy that my country has qualified for the World Cup and it is a big thing for me,” he says with pride,’’ he added.

“And when I perform well here I think I will get a call up to the World Cup. It has brought me a lot of motivation to perform well here and when I perform well here I will get a call up from my national team.”

Bentum Quantson confronts Ghana’s moral, political decay in new book

0

By Edward Acquah

Accra, Oct. 26, GNA – A renowned author and retired security intelligence chief, Kofi Bentum Quantson, has called for a return to patriotism and national values to address the moral and political decline threatening Ghana’s development.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at the launch of his latest book; “Ghana Politics: Some Harsh Words” in Accra on Friday, he said aid the country’s major challenges stemmed from the loss of love for the nation and the erosion of traditional values that once defined Ghanaian identity.

“All our problems stem from the fact that we don’t love our country. If we love our country, we will not do the things we are doing,” Mr Quantson said.

“Be patriotic, protect our national assets, and work for your country — that’s all.”

In the 268-page book, the writer examines Ghana’s political and democratic landscape, raising concerns about corruption, indiscipline, poor leadership, and “national hypocrisy” that undermines progress.

Through the 23 episodes, he offers a candid reflection on the country’s governance, national security, and accountability gaps, while urging citizens to choose change through action and integrity.

He lamented the gradual but steady loss of the nation’s values and dignity, adding; “If you lose your dignity as a nation, you perish.”

Mr Quantson called for a collective return to honesty, hard work and national pride, which he described as “the values that make us Ghanaians.”

On Ghana’s political system, he argued that the country’s current democratic structure had deepened division and acrimony rather than promoting unity.

“We have to readjust our architecture,” he said.

“The system we are running doesn’t suit us. It’s making us more divided and acrimonious. We have to find what will suit us, and not the imposition of this Western ideology of democracy. It’s not working here.”

The book launch adds to the author’s extensive body of work on governance, ethics, and national security.

“Ghana Politics: Some Harsh Words” presents what the writer describes as “a mirror of Ghana’s political journey,” exposing corruption and moral decline while proposing a rediscovery of civic responsibility.

Kofi Bentum Quantson is a distinguished author, journalist, criminologist, and retired public servant who served as Director of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and Executive Secretary of the Narcotics Control Board.

A nonagenarian, Mr Quantson is credited with several works on crime, governance, and ethics.

These include “Ghana: Peace and Stability,” “National Security: The Dilemma,” and “The State, Security and Governance.”

Ghana National PolioPlus Committee unveils “End Polio Now” billboard in Accra

0

The Ghana National PolioPlus Committee (GNPPC), in collaboration with its partners, has unveiled a giant “End Polio Now” billboard at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra to reaffirm Ghana’s commitment to eradicating poliomyelitis globally.

The ceremony, held last Friday in Accra, formed part of activities marking this year’s World Polio Day, which is commemorated annually on October 24. The 2025 theme, “End Polio: Every Child, Every Vaccine, Everywhere,” calls for sustained efforts to ensure that no child is left unprotected against the disease.

The Chair of the Ghana National PolioPlus Committee, Past Assistant Governor Gertrude Adzo Akpalu, led the event, which drew participation from the Rotary District Governor, Nana Yaa Siriboe, past and current Rotary executives, Rotarians, Rotaractors, and Interactors, as well as representatives from the Ghana Health Service, World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Ministry of Health, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and other stakeholders.

Also present were representatives from the Indian High Commission, First Bank Ghana, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Help My Cause Foundation, and members of the Ghana Coalition of NGOs in Health, among others.

Addressing the gathering, Ms. Akpalu reaffirmed Rotary’s unwavering commitment to the global campaign to eradicate polio, describing it as the organisation’s highest priority. “Ending polio remains at the heart of Rotary’s mission. This billboard is not just a symbol of awareness; it is a call to action for everyone to support vaccination and public health efforts,” she said.

District Governor Nana Yaa Siriboe praised the collective efforts of partners and volunteers who continue to ensure vaccination reaches every child. “Thank you all for helping to eradicate polio,” she stated.

The ceremony was also attended by Dr. Raymond Dankoli, Coordinator of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, and Professor John Kofi Odoom, a virologist at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, who emphasised the importance of continued surveillance to detect and contain new variants of the poliovirus, especially those linked to poor sanitation.

Ghana has achieved more than 99 per cent eradication of the disease, though occasional variant cases persist in communities with low sanitation standards. The unveiling of the billboard serves as a reminder of the need to maintain high vaccination coverage and public awareness to prevent any resurgence.

Rotarians and volunteers at the event carried placards with inscriptions such as “Make History Today,” “Thank You for Helping to Eradicate Polio,” and “I Want to End Polio,” as they renewed their call for global unity in fighting the disease.

Polio, a highly infectious viral disease, has no cure but can be prevented through vaccination. The virus remains endemic in only two countries — Afghanistan and Pakistan — but experts warn that until total eradication is achieved, no country is safe.

The Ghana National PolioPlus Committee’s initiative forms part of Rotary International’s decades-long partnership with WHO, UNICEF, and the CDC to eliminate the disease and promote awareness of vaccine-preventable illnesses worldwide.

Cake picnic brings bakers together in Kumasi

0

The first-ever cake picnic has been held in Kumasi, bringing together 25 local bakers to showcase their skills and learn from each other.

The event was organised by Inna’s Kitchen, SAR Consult, and Yummy Bakes to promote creativity, teamwork, and professional growth among bakers in the city.

Participants displayed a variety of cakes, including wedding cakes, birthday cakes, and chocolate cakes. The event created a platform for bakers to share ideas and experiences while networking with other professionals in the industry.

According to the organisers, the Cake Picnic aims to support young people and women in the community by helping them develop their baking and customer service skills.

The programme was led by Saddick Abdul Razack, Director of SAR Consult, Fati Adam, CEO of Inna’s Kitchen, and Hummu Jamal Ramart of Yummy Bakes. The organisers said they hope to make the event an annual one to help bakers grow sustainable businesses.

CEO of Inna’s Kitchen, Fati Adam, said the event provided an opportunity for bakers to share ideas, knowledge, and skills.

“It is important to come together as bakers to share knowledge, create opportunities, and help those who are vulnerable,” she said. “When we support each other, we grow together.”

The CEO of SAR Consult, who trained participants on customer communication, said customer care is key to business success.

“It is more expensive to look for new customers than to keep old ones,” he said. “Some customers need extra care. To give that care, you must have patience and go beyond their expectations. Be friendly, professional, and respectful to grow your business.”

Dr. Yoshana Adjei, one of the participants, said the Cake Picnic gave bakers a bigger platform to socialise and learn from one another.

“I learnt how to manage customers, face challenges, and still make sure they are satisfied,” she said.

Another participant, Zainab Nuhu, said the engagement taught her new ways to handle customers better.

“We have customers who are sometimes difficult to deal with. I learnt how to listen, apologise, solve their problems, and thank them after,” she said.

The event brought a renewed sense of teamwork and purpose among the bakers, who promised to apply what they had learnt to improve their businesses and customer relationships.

Organisers say future editions of the Cake Picnic will include training in marketing, packaging, and business management to help small baking businesses grow.

Kenyan journalist shares unforgettable encounter with former President Rawlings

0

A Kenyan journalist, Jeff Mwaura Koinange, has recounted an unforgettable encounter with Ghana’s former president, Jerry John Rawlings.

He described the encounter as a moment that turned a name he had only read about in history books into a living story of humility and leadership.

In a concise narrative titled ‘Through My African Eyes’, on his YouTube page, he shared his childhood days in Kenya and how West Africa, particularly Ghana, dominated newspaper headlines for its series of coups and power struggles.

“Back then, there was a coup almost every other year,” he said. “And one name stood out more than any other, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings,” he recounted.

He narrated how a young Rawlings had seized power in 1979 through a coup d’état.

“We used to read about him in school,” Koinange recalled. “He was this young Air Force officer of mixed Scottish and Ghanaian heritage who had taken over the country. He lined up corrupt officials and had them executed. He was a hard man, a reformer,” he remarked.

The Kenyan journalist also recalled how Rawlings voluntarily handed power back to civilians, only to reclaim it in another coup in 1981, launching nearly two decades of firm and transformative rule.

For Koinange, who had long known Rawlings only through news reports, meeting him years later in person was surreal.

While reporting in Accra one Saturday morning, Jeff stumbled upon a striking scene during Ghana’s national cleanup day.

The streets were empty, blocked off for the exercise, and as he approached a group of armed guards, he asked what was happening. “They told me, ‘It’s the President,’” Jeff said. “I couldn’t believe it. There was Jerry Rawlings himself, in a ditch, cleaning up the streets.”

https://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/BREAKING-Former-First-Lady-Nana-Konadu-Agyeman-Rawlings-is-dead-2006414

“He was down there, covered in dirt and sewage, pulling out plastic and waste. It wasn’t for show,” Jeff continued. “You could see he was putting his mind into it. This was the same man we’d read about growing up, the tough ruler, the coup leader, now cleaning the streets with his people.”

When Jeff introduced himself as a Reuters journalist and asked if he could film, Rawlings replied, “Why not?” before inviting him to meet later at the Osu Castle. “I thought he was joking,” Jeff said. “But sure enough, we went later that day, and there was a helicopter right there in the courtyard.”

Moments later, Rawlings appeared, climbed into the cockpit, and gestured for Jeff and his cameraman to join him. “We looked at each other like, ‘Really?’” Jeff laughed. “And then we realised he was the pilot.”

They took off from the coast, flying over the Atlantic and heading inland toward the Akosombo Dam.

“He was flipping switches, putting on his headset, all calm and confident,” Jeff recounted. “Here I was, being flown by the president of Ghana , the same man we studied about in school. Unreal.”

After an hour-and-a-half flight, they landed back at the castle. Sitting on the balcony overlooking the ocean, Jeff finally asked the question on his mind. “I said, ‘Mr President, you’ve been in power nearly 18 years. Was it worth it?’”

Rawlings paused, then replied, “The first time, I regretted giving back power to the civilians. But when we came back, I believe we made a change in this country.”

For Jeff Koinange, that moment captured the essence of Jerry John Rawlings ,a man of contradictions: once feared, later revered; a military ruler who lived among his people, taught through action, and left behind a legacy of discipline and national pride. “It was the day history leapt off the page”, Jeff said, “and came alive right before my eyes.”

Rawlings led the country briefly in 1979 and then from 1981 to 2001. He led a military regime until 1993 and then served two terms as the democratically elected president of Ghana.

He was the longest-serving leader in Ghana’s history, presiding over the country for 19 years.

Rawlings died on November 12, 2022020, the age of 73.

The “Import-Substitution Rhetoric”: Ghana’s Import Bill Surges by 16% in first 8 Months, Hitting $11.8B

0

Despite years of policy talk and advocacy about promoting local production and reducing over-reliance on foreign goods, Ghana’s import bill continues to soar, questioning the effectiveness of import-substitution talks.

Latest data supplied by the Bank of Ghana reveals the country’s import bill crossed the US$11.8 billion mark in just the first eight months of 2025.

According to the BoG’s September 2025 Monetary Policy Report, total imports rose by 15.5 percent, from US$10.22 billion in the same period of 2024 to US$11.80 billion this year.

The "Import-Substitution Rhetoric": Ghana’s Import Bill Surges by 16% in first 8 Months, Hitting $11.8B

The increase was driven by higher demand for both oil and non-oil products, underscoring the country’s stubborn dependence on imported goods despite repeated government pledges to encourage “Made in Ghana” consumption and production.

The data reveals that oil imports alone amounted to US$3.73 billion, a 19 percent jump compared to 2024, largely due to the increased demand for refined petroleum products.

“Ghana’s total import bill rose by 15.5 percent to US$11.80 billion in the first eight months of 2025 from US$10.22 billion in the corresponding period in 2024, driven by increases in both oil and non-oil imports. Oil imports amounted to US$3.73 billion, up by 19.0 percent compared to the same period in 2024, mainly due to increased demand for refined petroleum products,” portions of the report cited by The High Street Journal read.

Industry players such as the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) have, over the years, questioned why Ghana continues to import huge volumes of refined petroleum while the country refines its own products. Duncan Amoah, the Executive Secretary of COPEC, cannot fathom why the Tema Oil Refinery cannot be revamped to refine the country’s crude to reduce importation.

The "Import-Substitution Rhetoric": Ghana’s Import Bill Surges by 16% in first 8 Months, Hitting $11.8B

Non-oil imports, covering items such as machinery, vehicles, food products, and raw materials, also grew by 13.9 percent, rising to US$8.07 billion from US$7.08 billion in the same period last year.

“Non-oil imports also rose by 13.9 percent to US$8.07 billion from US$7.08 billion in the same review period,” the report further indicated.

The development is worrying considering the impact of high importation on the cedi, inflation, and the general economy.

It is more worrying, even as Ghana continues to advocate for import substitution, producing what it has the capacity to produce. The trend also raises questions about the effectiveness of policies meant to boost domestic industries and lessen pressure on the cedi.

The "Import-Substitution Rhetoric": Ghana’s Import Bill Surges by 16% in first 8 Months, Hitting $11.8B

Analysts say the rise in imports underscores another reality that Ghana’s consumer preferences and production patterns remain heavily tilted toward foreign products, partly due to inconsistent quality and limited supply of local alternatives.

This means the country’s dream of self-sufficiency cannot be achieved by policy rhetoric alone. There must be deliberate investment in local manufacturing, value addition, and consumer confidence in homegrown products and campaign for mindset change.

The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour, has strongly questioned the legal grounds upon which the court issued an arrest warrant for former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, in connection with the recent extradition developments.

Speaking during an interview with Channel One TV on October 24, 2025, the MP stated that the court’s order appeared to have been based on insufficient information, potentially overlooking the accused’s fundamental human rights.

“All this while, what the OSP was doing was much ado about nothing…Now it is clear when you went for your INTERPOL RED ALERT on what basis did the court made that order for the arrest warrant for Ken Ofori-Atta? And this is why im saying the courts are failing us in this regard… it appears the order was made on scanty information,” Nana Agyei Baffour stated.

He further suggested a broader issue with judicial understanding of constitutional law concerning basic rights.

“It is obvious that the order may have been made on very scanty information. That is without regard to the fundamental human rights of this country and the constitution of Ghana… ,” he added.

To support his argument, the MP drew a comparison to the Supreme Court’s rulings that a person charged with murder, defilement, or rape is entitled to bail, a right he said is rooted in the Constitution.

He argued that when state prosecutors were allowed to easily deny bail in the past, it led to abuse.

OSP sets record straight on Ken Ofori-Atta’s extradition

Nana Agyei Baffour recounted a case he personally handled where a young National Service man, newly hired by a major bank, was falsely accused of defilement and held in custody for nine months due to the prevailing legal situation at the time.

“I fought and fought and fought and fought by the grace of God, he had his liberty. And that is why I’m passionate about these things and people don’t understand,” he shared.

He warned that courts should not give a “pass” to state authorities, whose powers are already strengthened by law, stressing that the courts must stand as the bulwark between the state and the ordinary person.

The Manhyia South MP reiterated that Ken Ofori-Atta, regardless of his situation, is entitled to full legal protection.

He then focused on the Attorney General’s position regarding the extradition process.

“The fundamental basis is that there should be a charge against Ken Ofori-Atta,” the MP argued.

He further pointed out the contradiction between the Attorney General’s press conference and the requirement for an actual charge.

He noted that the Attorney General himself had stated that in jurisdictions like the US, an extradition order would not be made without an official charge, yet the domestic proceedings appeared to move forward without one at the time the press conferences were held.

Breast milk not a cure for eye problems – Optometrist advises parents

0

The Head of Eye Unit at the Ga North Municipal Hospital, Dr Godwin Asamoah Ahiakwao, has cautioned parents against applying breast milk to their children’s eyes, warning that the practice can lead to severe infections rather than healing.

Speaking during a free eye-screening exercise organised by the hospital to mark World Sight Day 2025, celebrated under the theme, “Love Your Eyes, Love Your Sight,” Dr Ahiakwao described the habit as dangerous and medically unfounded.

“We want parents to stop using breast milk on their children’s eyes because it can cause infections, including severe ones. This is because breast milk is not sterile and can introduce bacteria into the eye,” he stated.

According to a myjoyonline.com report dated October 26, 2025, the Principal Optometrist explained that breast milk, though rich in nutrients, could worsen eye conditions.

Dr Ahiakwao therefore urged parents to seek professional medical care immediately when they observe any abnormality in their children’s eyes.

He reminded parents that clear vision is fundamental to learning and cognitive development.

“It’s the eyes they use for learning and reading, so parents must make sure their children’s sight is always checked,” he said.

As part of the celebration, the Ga North Municipal Hospital conducted a free eye-screening exercise for pupils of Silicon Valley International School, successfully examining about 1,000 students.

The exercise aimed to promote early detection of vision problems and encourage a culture of regular eye check-ups.

Dr Ahiakwao also advised against excessive screen exposure, particularly among children and office workers, recommending the 20/20/20 rule for maintaining healthy vision.

“For every 20 minutes of close work, take a 20-second break and look 20 metres away. That simple practice helps to relax the eyes and prevent strain,” he explained.

Rural dwellers cautioned against unconventional eye treatments

The school’s Head of Junior High and Boarding House Supervisor, Dominic Owusu Ansah, expressed appreciation to the Ga North Municipal Health Service for its proactive initiative.

He noted that the collaboration has positively influenced pupils’ academic performance by addressing vision-related challenges early.

He emphasised that early intervention in eye health directly improves learning outcomes, underscoring the link between good eyesight and educational success.

The Amount of Money Former Presidents of Ghana Earns Every Month

News Hub Creator1d

In Ghana, the nation’s former Presidents are among the most well-catered-for public figures, enjoying a robust package of benefits during and after their time in office. These entitlements are enshrined under Article 71 of the 1992 Constitution, which defines the emoluments of top state officials, including the President, Vice President, ministers, and judges.

Although recent salary data remain undisclosed, historical records reveal that former President John Dramani Mahama earned roughly GH¢29,899 a month when he left office in 2016. The amount, according to public service trends, has likely been adjusted periodically to reflect inflation and recommendations from constitutional review committees.

The post-office benefits extend far beyond a monthly allowance. Former Presidents receive a furnished office, government-paid staff such as a cook, gardener, and security detail, two vehicles replaced every four years, and comprehensive healthcare for themselves and their spouses. They are also granted two fully funded international trips annually, courtesy of the state.

These privileges have frequently stirred national debate, with many citizens and analysts questioning their fairness and relevance amid economic hardships. Nonetheless, proponents argue that the generous package safeguards the dignity of the presidency and ensures that former leaders can continue to contribute to national development without financial hardship or political vulnerability.

Case Withdrawals Risk Electoral Backlash Warns Legal Analyst

0

Martin Kpebu
Martin Kpebu

The government faces potential political consequences if it fails to address growing public dissatisfaction over discontinued corruption prosecutions, prominent legal analyst Martin Kpebu has warned. Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints programme, he cautioned that citizens across party lines feel disappointed by controversial decisions to withdraw high profile cases, arguing that perceptions of selective justice could influence future electoral outcomes.

Kpebu emphasized that public anger remains palpable despite official explanations for the case discontinuations. “This thing can become a big election issue,” he stated. “The populace is not happy about withdrawals. Don’t underestimate Ghanaians, there is still anger around it.”

The legal practitioner specifically called for renewed investigation into the Saglemi Housing Project, where approximately $200 million was reportedly spent with limited results. He insisted the matter cannot simply fade away without proper accountability and transparency measures involving civil society organizations.

Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine has discontinued several high profile cases initiated under the previous administration, including charges against former Works and Housing Minister Collins Dauda and four others linked to the Saglemi project. The accused had initially faced 70 charges, including causing financial loss to the state, before all charges were dropped.

The Attorney General also discontinued the ambulance procurement case against Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and businessman Richard Jakpa. These decisions have drawn criticism from various quarters, with some observers citing concerns about political bias and selective prosecution.

Kpebu previously urged the Attorney General to provide detailed explanations for each discontinued case, arguing that blanket announcements without assigned reasons raise public concerns. He suggested that if reasons were provided for each case, citizens could evaluate whether discontinuation had merit.

The legal analyst noted that wealth accumulation by some political officeholders fuels public frustration and perceptions of impunity. Without urgent corrective action, he warned the situation could “boomerang into our faces,” suggesting the government’s reputation for fighting corruption could suffer lasting damage.

Kpebu proposed establishing a collaborative review panel involving civil society groups like CDD Ghana and technical experts to conduct forensic audits of controversial projects. “This isn’t about partisan politics,” he stressed in earlier commentary. “It’s about ensuring every cedi is accounted for.”

The Saglemi Housing Project, launched in 2012 to deliver 5,000 affordable units, has long been mired in allegations of inflated contracts and substandard construction. A 2021 probe revealed only 1,502 units were partially completed, with auditors flagging irregularities in fund allocation.

Critics argue the Attorney General’s withdrawal pattern, including cases against former officials from the Akufo Addo administration, has eroded public trust in anti corruption efforts. Governance analysts contend that selective justice undermines broader accountability mechanisms and perpetuates impunity.

The government established Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) in December 2024 to identify and retrieve allegedly looted state assets. However, the Attorney General’s office has maintained that it must independently verify ORAL findings before proceeding with prosecutions, emphasizing that rushing cases without proper evidence could result in embarrassment for the state.

Member of Parliament for Yendi, Abdul Fatawu Alhassan, recently explained that the Attorney General is following due processes to ensure credible prosecutions. He emphasized that cases from the ORAL Committee require independent verification before court action, noting that proceeding solely on committee reports could result in weak cases.

Kpebu’s warnings come as Ghana prepares for the 2028 elections, with the National Democratic Congress government’s handling of corruption cases likely to face scrutiny from both supporters and opposition. The legal analyst has consistently advocated for transparency in prosecutorial decisions, regardless of which party holds power.

The controversy reflects broader tensions in Ghana’s governance around executive authority, judicial independence, and accountability mechanisms. Public trust in institutions remains fragile following years of allegations about politically motivated prosecutions and discontinued cases across different administrations.

As debate intensifies, civil society organizations and legal experts continue pressing authorities to prioritize transparency and accountability over political considerations. The outcome could significantly shape public perception of the government’s commitment to fighting corruption ahead of future electoral contests.

ADB Profit Doubles Ahead of Government Recapitalization Plan

0

Agricultural Development Bank (ADB)
Agricultural Development Bank (ADB)

The Agricultural Development Bank has more than doubled its profit after tax to GH¢282.3 million in the nine months ended September 30, 2025, positioning itself strongly ahead of the government’s planned recapitalization next year. The state owned lender’s dramatic turnaround signals renewed investor confidence and operational resilience following years of sector wide restructuring.

According to unaudited financial statements released by ADB, the 152 percent profit surge from GH¢112.1 million recorded in the same period last year was driven primarily by a 67 percent jump in net interest income to GH¢918.1 million. This improvement came from higher yielding investment securities and more efficient liability management as Ghana’s economic environment stabilizes.

Total assets expanded 17 percent to GH¢16.2 billion, with cash and cash equivalents rising 24 percent to GH¢6.47 billion and investment securities climbing 37 percent to GH¢6.45 billion. The substantial allocation to government securities reflects strategic positioning for yield and liquidity management in Ghana’s recovering economy.

Customer deposits increased from GH¢11.14 billion to GH¢12.85 billion over the period, demonstrating growing trust in the bank’s stability. This rise in deposits enhances ADB’s capacity to extend more credit to businesses, farmers and households across the agricultural value chain.

Shareholders’ equity now stands at GH¢1.56 billion, up 7.1 percent, supported by retained earnings and growth in statutory reserves. The bank recorded a reduction in accumulated losses as current profitability absorbed past deficits, continuing the capital restoration that saw shareholders’ funds recover from negative GH¢27.1 million in June 2024 to GH¢1.51 billion by mid 2025.

The bank’s liquidity ratio improved to 130 percent from 125 percent a year earlier, reinforcing its ability to meet short term obligations and maintain smooth operations. However, total liabilities rose from GH¢12.41 billion to GH¢14.66 billion, reflecting expanded business activities.

Interest income rose 27 percent despite a smaller loan book, as ADB benefited from better returns on its expanded investment securities portfolio. Interest expense declined 9 percent, contributing to substantial net interest margin improvement. Non interest revenue streams also strengthened, with net fees and commission income growing 24 percent.

Operating expenses remained well controlled, with personnel expenses rising just 12.5 percent while other operating costs decreased slightly. This disciplined cost management contributed significantly to the bottom line performance.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced plans to recapitalize ADB in 2026 during the inauguration of the bank’s new nine member board in July. The move aims to enhance support for farmers, agribusinesses and value chain development, aligning with ADB’s founding mandate as Ghana’s primary agricultural financier.

Kenneth Kwamina Thompson, former CEO of Dalex Finance, now chairs the reconstituted board tasked with steering the bank toward operational efficiency and refocusing on food security and rural growth. The recapitalization forms part of broader structural reforms led by the Finance Ministry to drive agro industrialization and reduce import dependency.

The strong performance positions ADB among Ghana’s banking sector recovery success stories. The institution provides approximately 85 percent of institutional credit to Ghana’s agricultural market while offering services across retail, corporate, commercial and parastatal sectors through its universal banking model.

Despite the impressive profit growth, challenges remain. At the bank’s 38th Annual General Meeting in September, shareholders approved management’s strategic direction while acknowledging ongoing issues with non performing loans, which stood at 26.9 percent of gross loans in 2024, significantly above the industry average of 21.8 percent.

ADB has launched a new strategic plan positioning itself among Ghana’s top three banks, focusing on innovation, competitiveness, operational excellence and distinctive financial solutions for the agricultural sector. With profits and assets on the rise, the bank appears well positioned to meet upcoming recapitalization requirements without major difficulty.

Beyond balance sheet improvements, this performance carries broader economic implications. A stronger ADB means greater lending support for the agricultural sector, which forms the backbone of Ghana’s economy. It also positions the bank to increase financing for small and medium scale enterprises, potentially translating into higher productivity, more jobs and improved food security across the country.

The International Monetary Fund has set a year end 2025 deadline for state owned banks to complete their recapitalization as part of its Extended Credit Facility program supporting Ghana’s financial sector stability. ADB’s strong third quarter results suggest it’s moving in the right direction to meet these requirements when government support arrives next year.

Peter Obi Calls Internet Fraudsters Geniuses Needing Redirection

0

Peter Obi
Peter Obi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has described Nigerian internet fraudsters, commonly known as Yahoo boys, as geniuses who require proper guidance rather than condemnation. Speaking at the Golden Health Conference in Onitsha on Saturday, the former Anambra State governor argued that these youths possess creativity that could drive national development if properly channeled.

The conference, held at the Archbishop Patterson Auditorium of All Saints Cathedral, brought together students, professionals, and youth leaders under the theme “Money Beyond Wealth.” Obi revealed he cut short a two-day meeting in the United Kingdom to attend the event, describing it as addressing a critical vice eroding Nigerian values: the greed for material possessions.

“Some of our so-called Yahoo boys are geniuses who need redirection, not condemnation,” Obi stated during his address. He emphasized that with proper guidance, their creativity and courage could fuel innovation instead of deception. The challenge, he noted, lies in channeling their energy from fraudulent activities to productive enterprise.

The politician stressed that money becomes real wealth only when earned through ethical means and used to uplift both individuals and society. He cautioned that Nigeria cannot achieve greatness while celebrating corruption and rewarding dishonesty, drawing parallels to vices affecting the political class.

Obi reminded attendees that while money remains necessary for progress, it represents merely a fragment of true wealth. Real wealth, he argued, rests on integrity, character, and purpose. It should promote education, reduce poverty, and create opportunities for others to live dignified lives.

Citing Indonesia as an example, Obi explained how that government empowers young entrepreneurs through functional ministries, financial support, and innovation hubs, contrasting sharply with Nigeria’s neglect of its creative youth population. He urged Nigerian youths to learn from global innovators who started as young dreamers with minimal support.

The former governor also addressed religious and ethnic divisions, emphasizing that fairness and merit matter more than religious or tribal affiliations. “No religion or tribe buys bread cheaper than another,” he remarked. Nigeria’s abundant resources aren’t the problem; what’s lacking is the will to do what’s right. Once the nation embraces justice, fairness, and merit, its greatness will naturally unfold.

Obi thanked Owen Nwokolo, Bishop of the Diocese on the Niger, for his mentorship and commended the conference organizers for promoting discipline and value-based leadership among Nigerian youths.
