Ghana must rethink its energy future amid global transition – NGRI

0

The Africa Director at the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI), Nafi Chinery has called for urgent, coordinated, and inclusive planning around Ghana’s energy transition.

She indicated that although only about 7% of Ghana’s national revenue is derived from the fossil fuel sector, this revenue plays a vital role in supporting critical sectors such as education, agriculture, and healthcare.

Despite this, Ghana has ambitious plans to expand its footprint in the petroleum sector, including strengthening the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).

At COP27 in Egypt, Ghana launched its Energy Transition Investment Plan, initially seeking over $600 million in funding. CSOs pushed back, calling for deeper consultation and alignment with the realities on the ground. The plan has since been revised, now targeting $550 billion by 2060, with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions.

However, she warned that global demand for fossil fuels is declining rapidly, recounting how, in 2021, the Ministry of Energy began coordinating a national energy transition plan with the support of civil society organisations (CSOs), including NRGI. Concerns were raised about coordination, transparency, feasibility, and inclusion, particularly for vulnerable groups such as youth, persons with disabilities, and workers in the energy sector who would need retraining and support.

Speaking during a multi-stakeholder dialogue on Wednesday, May 21, she highlighted the contradiction between Ghana’s continued investment in fossil fuels and the global momentum toward clean energy.

“If the buyers of our fossil fuel products are moving away, we also need to have a plan,” she said, emphasising the importance of scenario planning and future forecasting to protect the country’s economy.

Chinery also pointed out the broader geopolitical shifts that affect financing for African countries. “Donor funding is shrinking,” she said, referencing reduced international aid from the U.S. and Europe due to rising domestic priorities.

This, she stressed, makes it even more urgent for African nations to look inward and align their mineral and energy sectors in a sustainable, strategic way.

“This meeting is timely. We need to know where we are, who is doing what, what more needs to be done, and most critically, how we’ll raise the money to finance Africa’s energy transition.”

TotalEnergies CEO defends company against East Africa abuse allegations

0

TotalEnergies chief executive Patrick Pouyanne defended the company’s work on oil projects in East Africa on Friday, after an independent U.N. human rights expert said the French firm should urgently address fresh allegations of abuses.

In a statement, opens new tab released late on Thursday, Special Rapporteur on Environmental Defenders Michel Forst said the company must take immediate action to protect activists linked to the East African Crude Oil Pipeline and connected oilfields.

That followed a decision by German asset manager Union Investment to drop TotalEnergies’ bonds and shares from its sustainable investment funds over the issue.

Pouyanne addressed criticism of the East African projects related to their alleged environmental and human rights impacts during the company’s annual shareholders meeting.

“We develop these projects with the values and principles that are ours, we are convinced of the good they do for the countries and the local populations,” he said.

He added that projects like the one in Uganda are better done by TotalEnergies rather than others, who may care less about human rights and the environment.

Union Investment said it took its decision after reviewing a fresh report from non-profit Just Finance International citing alleged abuses at the Kingfisher oil site in Uganda, part of the pipeline project.

Forst said TotalEnergies had failed to take effective steps to address abuses against activists, adding it was “deeply troubling” that “it has instead consistently rejected the allegations as mere ‘misconceptions’ of the projects’ impact”.

As a French company, Forst said TotalEnergies was bound by the Aarhus Convention – an agreement protecting public rights to participation in environmental matters – to ensure individuals were not penalised or harassed for their opposition to the projects.

Earlier, the company released a statement saying it “does not tolerate any threats or violence against those who peacefully defend and promote human rights” and reminds those it works with of its position on the subject.

The company added that it worked with Ugandan authorities “to stress to the police the need to ensure that due process is followed, the protesters are treated well, and their rights are respected while in detention”.

The security team of its local unit also monitors the wellbeing of anyone arrested and ensures their representatives are able to visit them, it said.

Forst backed a call by Union Investment for an independent investigation into the alleged abuses. As well as making the results public and acting on any shortcomings, he also asked TotalEnergies to use its leverage to prevent any further attacks.

Former Minister of Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong, has reportedly declared his intention to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Acheampong’s decision was confirmed through a social media post by GHOne TV on Sunday, May 25, 2025, stating, “Bryan Acheampong to contest NPP flagbearership.”

Additionally, a video post shared by Okay FM also reported that Acheampong will participate in the NPP presidential primaries and aims to represent the party in the 2028 elections.

In recent months, the former Agriculture Minister has been actively engaging with communities, most notably visiting the Adum-Blue Light fire disaster site in Kumasi, where he pledged support for rebuilding efforts and donated GH¢300,000 to affected victims.

Meanwhile, his candidacy has garnered support from prominent party members, including former NPP member, Hopeson Adorye, former MP for Asante Akim North; Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, MP for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku and among others.

These figures have publicly expressed their willingness to campaign for Bryan Acheampong in his bid to secure the flagbearer position.

Bryan Acheampong brings a wealth of experience to the race, having served in several key governmental roles, including as Minister of State at the Ministry of the Interior and Minister of Food and Agriculture.

He holds a PhD in Information Systems from the University of Ghana and also possesses a certificate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

As the opposition NPP prepares for its internal elections, Bryan Acheampong’s entry adds a dynamic element to the contest.

Niger plans to cut number of Chinese oil workers, documents show

0

Niger has asked that some Chinese employees working on oil projects leave the country, documents seen by Reuters on Friday showed, a move that could affect dozens and further strain bilateral ties.

Similar to other West African countries, junta-led Niger has been trying to assert greater control over its natural resources and promote local employment.

Oil minister Sahabi Oumarou has asked the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and its refinery SORAZ to terminate the contracts of expatriates who have been working in Niger for more than four years, two letters showed.

“China has always adhered to the principles of truth, friendship, sincerity, and the correct view of righteousness and benefit in carrying out cooperation with Africa,” a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry said, adding that CNPC had made economic and social contributions in Niger “for many years.”

“Ensuring the long-term and healthy development of China-Niger oil cooperation is in line with the common interests of both parties,” and specific issues that may arise can be resolved through “friendly negotiations,” the spokesperson said.

In a letter to SORAZ dated May 21, Oumarou indicated there would be some flexibility, saying he understood the need to keep certain employees in the country and that departure decisions would be made on a case-by-case basis.

Yet in a separate letter to CNPC, dated May 20, Oumarou said he would decline a private meeting with the company’s CEO who had asked to discuss tensions between the two sides.

In that letter, Oumarou also accused CNPC of non-compliance with local regulations.

In March, Niger expelled three Chinese oil executives in a dispute over disparities between the salaries of expatriate staff and lower-paid local workers.

Following the executives’ dismissal, CNPC’s top officials have been trying to meet with the government for negotiations, a source close to the company said.

If the decision described in the May 20 and May 21 letters is applied, dozens of Chinese workers will have to go home, the source said.

Zelensky says ‘US silence’ over Russian attacks encourages Putin

0

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has alleged that the US’s “silence” after recent Russian attacks is encouraging President Vladimir Putin, following Moscow’s largest aerial attack yet.

The overnight attack saw Russia fire 367 drones and missiles – the highest number in a single night since Putin launched a full-scale invasion in 2022.

At least 12 people, including three children, were killed and dozens more injured in widespread strikes across Ukraine. They came a day after one of the heaviest assaults on the capital Kyiv in months.

US President Donald Trump reacted late on Sunday by telling reporters: “I’m not happy with what Putin is doing. He’s killing a lot of people.”

Ukraine’s Air Force said that since 20:40 on Saturday local time (17:40 GMT), Russia had carried out strikes using 298 drones and 69 cruise and ballistic missiles.

The air force said it had shot down 45 cruise missiles and destroyed 266 UAVs, with most regions in Ukraine affected and hits recorded in 22 locations. Rescuers were working in more than 30 cities and villages,Zelensky said.

Despite mounting international calls, Russia has continued to intensify its aerial campaign, showing no sign of halting its offensive and ignoring calls for a ceasefire.

In a pointed message to Trump – who has previously claimed that Putin is interested in ending the war – Zelensky said: “The world may go on vacation, but the war continues, despite weekends and weekdays.

“This cannot be ignored. America’s silence, and the silence of others in the world, only encourages Putin.”

Zelensky warned that Russia’s “brutality cannot be stopped” without “strong pressure on the Russian leadership.”

Trump’s first comments on the latest strikes came hours later at an airport in Morristown, New Jersey, as he was preparing to return to Washington.

“I’m not happy with Putin. I don’t know what’s wrong with him. What the hell happened to him?” Trump said.

He declined to give any details about what his response would be.

Until then, the only reaction to the Russian barrage from senior US officials came from Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine.

In a post on X, he published a photo purportedly showing smoke billowing in the night sky over the Ukrainian capital after the Russian attacks.

“This is Kyiv. The indiscriminate killing of women and children at night in their homes is a clear violation of the 1977 Geneva Peace Protocols designed to protect innocents. These attacks are shameful. Stop the killing. Ceasefire now,” Kellogg wrote.

The 1977 protocols are amendments to the Geneva Convention, which sets out internationally agreed rules of conduct in war.

Of the people killed, three in the Zhytomyr region to the west of Kyiv were children – all siblings, according to Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa. In a statement on X, she identified them as eight-year-old Stanislav, Tamara, 12, and Roman, 17.

Siblings Stanislav, Tamara, and Roman were all killed in the Russian bombardment, Ukrainian officials said

When Zelensky refers to “American silence”, he likely means the further sanctions Washington has so far resisted imposing on Moscow for its continued invasion.

His argument is that Russia’s war machine is not being starved sufficiently, and that the Kremlin is not being incentivised enough to meaningfully engage in ceasefire talks.

Trump has said he wants to use more of a carrot than stick when it comes to convincing Moscow to agree to a ceasefire, but, aside from direct Ukraine-Russia talks and further prisoner of war exchanges, there has been little to no progress on bringing a pause in fighting closer, despite the US president’s growing impatience.

Despite Kyiv’s European allies preparing further sanctions for Russia, the US has said it will either continue trying to broker these peace talks, or “walk away” if progress does not follow.

With Moscow’s continued, maximalist demands for peace, Putin deciding not to show up at recent ceasefire negotiations in Turkey, and 48 hours of heavy aerial bombardments for Ukraine, it is hard to see what the Kremlin would have to do in order for the White House to adopt a tougher stance.

Russia’s defence ministry said it had inflicted damage on targets including military airfields, ammunition depots and electric warfare stations, claiming damage across 142 areas.

According to Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, 13 regions were attacked, with more than 60 people injured, 80 residential buildings damaged, and 27 fires recorded.

Klymenko called it a “combined, ruthless strike aimed at civilians”.

Two women, aged 85 and 56, were killed after a house in Kupiansk was hit, according to Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv region.

In the Kyiv region, four people were killed and 16 injured, including three children, DSNS said.

Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and Moscow currently controls about 20% of Ukrainian territory.

This includes Crimea – Ukraine’s southern peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014.

Russia’s previous largest drone attack came just a week ago when 273 drones were launched on the central Kyiv region and Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk regions in the east, according to Ukraine’s air force.

Russia is able not only to just manufacture drones at a faster rate, but they are also evolving. Shahed drones are now being packed with more explosives and improved technology to evade detection.

Ukraine said the 13 regions hit by strikes on Sunday were Kyiv and the capital’s wider region, as well as the regions of Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Sumy and Poltava.

In Kyiv, local officials reported 11 injuries, multiple fires and damage to residential buildings, including a dormitory.

A BBC colleague messaged to say a block of flats was destroyed, just a five minute drive from where she lived.

The strikes came as the capital marked its annual Kyiv Day holiday.

In Russia, the defence ministry said 110 Ukrainian drones were destroyed and intercepted over 12 Russian regions and the Crimea peninsula between midnight and 07:00 local time (05:00 BST).

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that 12 drones heading towards the capital were shot down.

He added that emergency services crews were deployed to assess damage caused by falling drone debris.

In the Tula region, just south of Moscow, drone wreckage crashed in the courtyard of a residential building, smashing windows in a number of apartments, local governor Dmitriy Milyaev said.

No-one was injured, he added.

Sunday was also the third and final day of a major prisoner of war exchange between the two sides. After this weekend, there is even less hope it will lead to further co-operation.

On Friday, Ukraine and Russia each handed over 390 soldiers and civilians in the biggest prisoner exchange since Russia launched its full-scale assault in February 2022.

On Saturday, Zelensky announced that another 307 Ukrainian prisoners had returned home as part of an exchange deal with the Kremlin.

And on Sunday, Ukraine and Russia each confirmed 303 of their soldiers had returned home – bringing the total over the three days to 1,000 prisoners each.

The swap followed the first face-to-face talks between the two sides in three years, which took place in Turkey.

Earlier this week, Trump and Putin had a two-hour phone call to discuss a US-proposed Ukraine ceasefire deal.

Trump said he believed the call had gone “very well”, and added that Russia and Ukraine will “immediately start” negotiations toward a ceasefire and “an end to the war”.

However, Putin has only said Russia would work with Ukraine to craft a “memorandum” on a “possible future peace”, and has not accepted a 30-day ceasefire.

EU needs until 9 July for US trade talks, chief says

0

The EU’s chief has said she is ready to move “swiftly” to agree a trade deal with the United States, but says the bloc needs until 9 July to agree a “good deal”.

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said she had a “good call” with US President Donald Trump on Sunday, two days after he expressed frustration with the pace of negotiations with the EU and threatened to impose 50% tariffs.

Trump last month announced a 20% tariff on most EU goods, but later halved it to 10% until 8 July to allow time for negotiations.

Von der Leyen said Europe was “ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively” and “to reach a good deal, we would need the time until 9 July”.

In remarks to reporters at the White House on Friday afternoon, hours before talks with the bloc, Trump said he planned to raise tariffs on all goods sent to the US from the EU to 50% by 1 June, citing impatience at negotiations.

Later on Friday, the EU’s trade chief Maroš Šefčovič reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to securing a fair deal.

Following a call with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, he said: “The EU’s fully engaged, committed to securing a deal that works for both.”

He continued: “EU-US trade is unmatched and must be guided by mutual respect, not threats. We stand ready to defend our interests.”

Trump has long criticised what he views as an unfair trade relationship with the EU, despite the bloc being one of Washington’s largest trading partners. Last year, the EU exported more than $600bn (€528bn; £443bn) in goods to the US while importing $370bn worth, according to US government data.

The president has specifically raised concerns on trade in cars and agricultural goods. Although some tariffs were paused earlier this year to allow for negotiations, a 25% levy on EU steel and aluminium remains in place.

European leaders continue to warn against escalation. France and Germany have called for a diplomatic solution, stressing that tariffs would harm both economies.

The EU has threatened – and paused – its own measures against the US.

It said it would introduce a 25% tariff on €18bn ($20bn; £15bn) worth of US goods coming into Europe, but this was put on hold.

The bloc is also currently consulting on additional measures against US imports into the US valued at €95bn.

Lewandowski double seals Barca final day win at Athletic Club

0

Robert Lewandowski scored twice as La Liga champions Barcelona wrapped up their domestic treble-winning season with a comfortable victory at Athletic Club.

Having sealed their 28th league title with two games to spare, Hansi Flick’s men scored their 100th goal of the league campaign with the 14th-minute opener.

Lewandowski expertly chipped home goalkeeper Unai Simon, before he doubled the lead only three minutes later, arriving at the back post to head home following Raphinha’s inswinging corner.

The goals were his 27th in the league and 40th overall this season.

Substitute Dani Olmo sealed the victory from the penalty spot in the fourth minute of added time as Barca finished the campaign with 88 points from 28 wins and four draws.

They finished four clear of Real Madrid as German Flick won the La Liga, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup titles during his first season in charge of Barca.

Despite his side’s first-half dominance, Athletic Club had two good chances to reduce the deficit before the break – both falling to Maroan Sannadi, who should have done better.

The 24-year-old striker failed to hit the target from six yards out after getting on the end of Unai Nunez’s cross.

Sannadi then poked wide with only visiting goalkeeper Inaki Pena to beat after being played through on goal by his captain Oscar de Marcos, who was making his 570th and final appearance for the Bilbao outfit.

Lewandowski, who has only Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe (31) ahead of him in the La Liga scoring charts this season, passed up chances to complete his hat-trick early in the second half.

Athletic Club went close again when Barca centre-back Pau Cubarsi’s defensive header from Alex Berenguer’s free-kick rattled the crossbar.

De Marcos received a standing ovation from the San Mames crowd as he was substituted in the 89th minute, passing the captain’s armband to future captain Inaki Williams.

But it was Barca who had the last word as Olmo scored from the spot in the stoppage time after he was brought down in the box by Yuri Berchiche.

The hosts, who had secured their Champions League qualification before the final day, finished fourth, level on 70 points with fifth-placed Villarreal.

Denchembuoso-Techiman road in disrepair, residents cry out

0

Residents and regular users of the Denchembuoso-Techiman stretch in the Kwadaso Municipality of the Ashanti Region are calling on the government to urgently fix their roads, as the conditions continue to deteriorate.

Over the years, community members have struggled with severe dust pollution due to the abandoned road project, as contractors have left the construction site. The situation worsens during the rainy season, further affecting residents’ daily lives.

The Denchembuoso-Techiman road, a major link connecting Atwima Boko, Twedie, Ofoase, Trabuom, and surrounding communities, has remained in a deplorable state for years, hampering development in the area.

The road was upgraded in 2019 and was expected to be completed within two years. It forms part of the 16.2-kilometre Kwadaso to Trabuom road, which was awarded to Asabea Engineering Limited.

However, the project has stalled for several years.

According to residents, the abandoned road is negatively affecting their daily lives and businesses.

“If you sit in a commercial vehicle, you won’t have peace. The dust is affecting our lives here. Look at where the market is, if someone is selling roasted plantain or yam, and you buy some other, it means you are buying sickness.

“Sometimes the chiefs will be in the palace, and the residents will come complaining about the dusty road. The town is not far from Kumasi, yet as if you have travelled to a village,” Nana Tie-Bonsu Ansah II, Linguist for Atwimahene, told Citi News.

“We have been left behind because we don’t have anyone to help us. The contractor asked us to move our containers to enable him to construct the road, yet he has abandoned the road, leaving us to struggle with the dust here,” another resident said, Akosua Bonsu.

“The dust is affecting our lives here. My business has collapsed as a result of the poor condition of the road,” Nana Yaa Kyerewaa, Business owner, said

Residents are thus appealing to the government to urgently intervene and fix the poor road conditions.

Drivers and commuters using the road also shared their frustrations and called on the government to address the challenges they face.

“The road has been in this terrible state, which is affecting us. Sometimes we end up damaging our springs. Every four days in a week, I have to go visit a mechanic to work on my car due to the poor roads. We are calling on the government to come to our aid,” Tony Bekumah, a driver, said.

“Everyday we have to go for maintenance. The contractor has abandoned the site, and the road is affecting us. We are urging the government to help us construct the road to avert the challenges we are going through,” said another driver, Alex Nyarko.

“The nature of the road is affecting the drivers and us, the commuters, as well. Travelling from here to Kejetia is about fifteen minutes, but because of the current condition of the road but we now take about an hour for that. We are appealing to the government to help us,” said Isaac Donkor, a Commuter.

Meanwhile, the Assembly Member for the area, David Asare, lamented the current state of the road and appealed to the government to intervene and resolve the issue.

“The road has been abandoned, and dust is killing us in this community,” he added.

For his part, the Odikro and Nifahene of Atwima Techiman, Nana Afriyei Takyi, expressed his frustration over the state of the roads and urged the government to construct them to boost development in the area.

“The council members of the community met to find ways to address the challenges with the contractor. Here is Atwima Denchembuso, if it rains right now, you can’t stand where we are now. What we want is to get good roads. If the roads are in good shape, it will attract investors and also create jobs for the people in this community. Even if you bring an investor or business here, it won’t thrive because of the poor condition of the road.

“We, the chiefs, have lands to attract investors but the road is hampering that development. If the government is listening to us, the chiefs are urging for its intervention and address the Denchembuso Techiman, Twidea road,” he said.

Mahama calls for collaboration to address rising indiscipline in SHSs

Mahama’s strong ‘fundamentals’ driving cedi gains

0

The Member of Parliament for Upper Manya Krobo, Bismark Tetteh Nyarko, has credited the recent stability of Ghana’s cedi to the strong economic fundamentals put in place by President John Mahama and the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

Speaking on the cedi gains on the Channel One Newsroom on Sunday May 25, Nyarko highlighted the resilience of the cedi, stating, “The cedi is doing pretty well, and like we’ve all been told previously, when the fundamentals are strong, the cedi will reflect the same.”

He attributed this positive performance to prudent economic policies and stabilisation strategies initiated under Mahama’s leadership.

Nyarko further emphasised that the passage of the GoldBod legislation has also played a crucial role in ensuring the cedi’s stability.

“You can also remember that recently we passed a law to establish the GoldBod. The GoldBod has also contributed to the stability of the cedi, and I think I expect more of this in the coming year,” he stated.

Ghanaian politicians only borrow and waste money – Kwaku Kwarteng

0

Kwaku Kwarteng is the former deputy Minister of Finance Kwaku Kwarteng is the former deputy Minister of Finance

Former Deputy Minister of Finance Kwaku Kwarteng has expressed worry over the administration of Ghana since its independence.

He explains that, unlike other economies where leaders generate revenue for the development of the countries, Ghana has seen the reverse.

According to him, Ghanaian leaders since independence have relied on borrowing, which they end up spending recklessly.

He believes that this is a major reason why the country and its citizens have not seen the prosperity they deserve over the years.

“It is not revenue that we have created that we misuse; we go to borrow. Post-independence, the style of government we have practised has been to borrow and borrow and award contracts and take kickbacks and mess up the economy and create an unstable environment so that entrepreneurs are not able to do their work, the economy is not expanding in the proper areas, and production is still very low. When I look at you, and I look at the youth that we are churning out of the universities, where are we going to find work for them?” he said.

He continued, “This country cannot go on like this; we can never grow like this. At some point we have to draw the line and say this is where we change course. Others have done it; why can’t we do it? Why can we not do it for our entrepreneurs to create jobs for the youth and bring prosperity to our people? Folks, why can we not do it? We have not been able to do it because all the wrong things I spoke of in government feed people’s interest”.

“So they are not easy to change. So sometimes politicians set out to do their best, the interests are very strong, they fail, and along the line they give up and join the loot. In order to fix this mess and prevent the country from going into the kind of ditch we see and stop what is likely to be a more difficult Ghana for our children and our grandchildren, we have got to stop at some point and change course, and to do that we will need a leadership that is radical;

“You’ll need a leadership that can confront and disrupt this unhelpful status quo. You’ll need a bold leader. As for the suit-wearing gentlemen, we have seen them and seen them. A time has come when Ghana has to be taken over by people who are willing to confront the status quo and set this country on the path of prosperity,” he remarked.

Suspended CJ’s probe shouldn’t be public – Upper Manya Krobo MP warns

0

The Member of Parliament for Upper Manya Krobo, Bismark Tetteh Nyarko, has emphasised the need for the probe into petitions against the suspended Chief Justice to be conducted in camera, in strict adherence to constitutional provisions.

Nyarko reaffirmed that while the judiciary enjoys independence in its judicial, administrative, and financial functions, it remains subject to the 1992 Constitution.

He argued that any deviation from the prescribed procedure would be unwarranted. “If the constitution says that this investigation should be in camera, I don’t see why somebody should be saying that the President of the Republic of Ghana should do otherwise,” he stated on the Channel One Newsroom on Sunday May 25.

His remarks come amid debates over whether the hearings should be made public, following calls for greater transparency in the process. However, Nyarko insists that the constitutional directive must be respected.

“The procedures are there, the constitution is clear on these matters, and if the President or the committee is following what the constitution demands, I think that is right,” he added.

The MP also expressed surprise at reports that the spouse of the suspended Chief Justice had requested to be present during the hearings.

He questioned the necessity of such participation, reiterating that the constitution mandates a private inquiry. “The constitution is clear—this matter should be heard in camera. If it is in camera, that should be it,” he asserted.

Police enlist 140 for anti-drug watchdogs in Zongo communities

0

The Ghana Police Service has begun processes to incorporate neighborhood watchdogs into its operations to combat drug peddling and abuse, particularly in Zongo communities.

This move follows a directive from the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, issued during a recent visit to Sabon Zongo in Accra.

Muntaka pledged to prioritise the recruitment of individuals who assist in the arrest of drug offenders into the security services.

According to him, this forms part of a broader government strategy to address the growing menace of drug trafficking and abuse, especially in Zongo areas.

Speaking at a sensitization programme at Sabon Zongo on Thursday, May 8, the Interior Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering Zongo youth through socioeconomically focused initiatives.

The watchdog groups—comprising both men and women—will help identify drug peddling hotspots and lead a decentralized effort to tackle the problem at the community level.

Approximately 140 individuals have already been enrolled in the programme.

Ghana’s spirited performance reflects the promise of the nation’s growing lacrosse program Ghana’s spirited performance reflects the promise of the nation’s growing lacrosse program

Team Ghana recorded a morale-boosting win in their third game at the 2025 Heritage Cup on Sunday, May 25, 2025, following a thrilling encounter with China that ended 2–2 at full time before Ghana prevailed in the tiebreaker known as the “Brave.”

The match showcased the Team Ghana’s resilience after earlier defeats, proving their ability to learn quickly and adapt under pressure in this international lacrosse competition held in the suburbs of Massachusetts.

What is the Brave?

In lacrosse tournaments such as the Heritage Cup, when a match is tied after regulation time, the game proceeds to a special one-on-one showdown called the “Brave.” Each team selects a player to face off in a fast-paced duel starting at midfield. The challenge tests individual skill, composure, and speed, and the winner of this head-to-head duel secures the match victory for their team.

Representing Team Ghana for the tiebreaker was Aiden Dixon who put in significant efforts for the epic victory.

Team Ghana’s victory over China in the Brave not only earned them their first win of the tournament but also injected much-needed confidence into the squad as they continue competing against some of the world’s best teams.

Coach and supporters hailed the win as a testament to the players’ growing cohesion and fighting spirit, particularly given the tough schedule of multiple matches over the weekend. The victory comes after a 4–2 loss to Chile earlier the same day and a narrow 3–2 defeat to Argentina the day before.

Team Ghana’s roster, featuring talented players like David Collingwoode (C.) Williams, Prince Ayivon, David Antwi, Phil Quist, Jason Bandoh, Bryce Cheek, and Kevin Asamoah-Mensah, is using the Heritage Cup as a platform to develop skills and prepare for upcoming national team trials and international competitions, including the U20 Men’s Championship in Korea.

The 2025 Heritage Cup brings together 112 teams from 36 countries, promoting lacrosse’s global growth while providing valuable competitive experience. Ghana’s spirited performance reflects the promise of the nation’s growing lacrosse program on this global stage.

As the tournament continues through May 26, Team Ghana will aim to build on this hard-fought victory, learning from each game and returning stronger in pursuit of future success.

Feto-Maternal Unit facility inaugurated at Greater Accra Regional Hospital

0

The Greater Accra Regional Hospital (GARH) has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Feto-Maternal Unit facility aimed at improving care for high-risk pregnancies and enhancing maternal and neonatal health outcomes.

The facility, which was inaugurated by the hospital on Friday, is equipped with various machines, including a high-resolution ultra sound machine for the assessment of pregnant women and their unborn babies.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Medical Director of GARH, Dr Ralph Armah, said that the facility had become necessary due to the technological advancement in maternal care delivery.

Dr Armah said he was hopeful that the facility with the machines it was equipped with would help reduce foetal and maternal outcomes in the obstetrics and gynaecology department of the hospital.

Additionally, Dr Armah said he was optimistic that the inauguration of the facility would inspire young doctors at the hospital who aspired to become specialists in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology.

For his part, the head of the obstetrics and gynaecology department of the GARH, Dr Martin Owusu Boamah, said that before the inauguration of the facility, the hospital had a challenge of assessing high-risk pregnancies as it was unable to pick up abnormalities of unborn babies during pregnancies.

However, he said that with the existence of machines such as the high-resolution ultra sound machine, abnormalities of unborn babies could easily be assessed and picked up by the hospital, thereby minimising the proportion of bad outcomes for pregnancies.

“This facility is not to serve only clients of the hospital, but the idea is that all pregnant women attending facilities where they don’t have feto-maternal specialists can be brought here for them to be assessed, “Dr Boamah added.

Dr Kwaku Doffour-Dapaah, a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist at the GARH, said that the hospital could now attend to about 20 patients in the ultra sound room with the existence of the high-resolution ultra sound machine.

He further said, “For the regular clinic for high-risk patients, we can see about 30 patients on a daily basis. The rest of the patients with low risk pregnancies are seen at the regular antenatal clinic.”

Dr Doffour-Dapaah said a simulation training centre had been established within the facility to help in the training of medical doctors, midwives, and medical students who visited the health facility in the management of various medical conditions.

According to him, GARH had two of the maternal fetal medical specialists in the country, adding that the feto-maternal unit was the first to be established within the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

Iran National Security Council halts implementation of head scarf law

0

“The Security Council has instructed us not to implement the hijab (headscarf) law,” said Parliament Speaker Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf.

Although parliament passed the law, the Security Council’s decision takes precedence according to Ghalibaf, the Entekhab news site reported.

The Iranian Security Council is the nation’s highest decision-making body and under the constitution can also revise decisions made by parliament and the government.

The law, passed last year by Islamic hardliners in parliament, imposes heavy fines, withdrawal of public services and, for repeat offences, prison sentences on women who fail to cover their hair in public.

The law was originally supposed to be implemented in December last year, but was postponed due to massive protests at home and abroad. The government then vetoed the law and announced changes.

Critics of the law include President Massoud Peseshkian, a moderate conservative who fears renewed unrest if the law is implemented.

But hardliners in parliament are demanding the law be enacted, arguing Islamic values must be preserved to prevent a “Western cultural invasion.”

In Iran, women are required by Islamic law to wear a long jacket and a headscarf to cover their whole body except their faces and hands though in larger cities, women often ignore the rule in protest.

Opposition to the law has been soaring with mass protests staged under the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom,” after the death of young Iranian Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini in the autumn of 2022.

She was detained by the morality police for allegedly violating Islamic dress codes by incorrectly wearing her headscarf and died shortly after in custody.

How can I be obsessed with a lawyer I taught in open court? Thaddeus Sory fires back at Dame

0

Legal practitioner Thaddeus Sory Legal practitioner Thaddeus Sory

Legal practitioner Thaddeus Sory has launched a scathing response to former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame, accusing him of hypocrisy, selective memory, and unethical conduct in a strongly worded statement shared on social media.

Sory said his decision to respond was born out of principle, stating, “We do not suffer spoilt children.”

He took issue with Dame’s reaction to earlier criticisms, particularly the suggestion that Sory’s comments were driven by obsession or jealousy.

“And I’m obsessed with you? How can I be obsessed with a lawyer I taught elementary civil procedure in open court just last October?” he asked.

The post challenges Dame’s credibility, pointing out inconsistencies in his public conduct and courtroom behavior.

Sory said it was “incongruous” for Dame to admit he represented clients affiliated with both political parties, only to turn around and label Sory’s own client’s petition against the Chief Justice as politically motivated.

Highlighting incidents from court, Sory reminded Dame of a time when he “screamed in court” to stop Sory from representing the Speaker of Parliament, only to complain later when Sory followed through.

“It is despicably incongruous that he forgets how, on each of these occasions, he went hoarse in the media, ranting about it,” Sory wrote.

Sory also criticized Dame’s public commentary on active legal matters, which he claims violates Rule 38 of the professional conduct guidelines.

“What could be more unethical than a lawyer who takes to radio and social media all the time to prosecute his cases in public?” he asked, suggesting that Dame’s conduct would have warranted sanctions under different circumstances.

Though he ends on a somewhat humorous note—“It is just me being silly, but not in a hard way”—Sory made it clear that this was only “Part One” of his rebuttal.

Ablekuma North Assembly Members seek injunction against MCE nominee

The Assembly Members have asked the court to restrain Kalamu from holding himself as MCE The Assembly Members have asked the court to restrain Kalamu from holding himself as MCE

Some members of the Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly, led by Presiding Member Ibrahim Sulley, have filed a writ in court seeking to restrain Kalamu Adamu Musah from presenting himself as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the assembly.

According to the Assembly Members, Musah, who was nominated by the President and serves as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Organizer for Ablekuma North, has not been formally confirmed as MCE, having failed to secure the required votes during a confirmation exercise held on May 13, 2025.

In the vote, conducted at the Assembly’s conference hall and supervised by the Electoral Commission, Musah received 10 votes out of 21, falling short of the two-thirds majority required by Article 243 of the 1992 Constitution and Section 20(1) of the Local Governance Act for confirmation as MCE.

Following the announcement of the results, the Presiding Member adjourned the meeting indefinitely after a motion was moved and seconded. A closing prayer was said, and members subsequently dispersed.

However, concerns have been raised over a second round of voting reportedly held without the knowledge or participation of all voting members.

According to the applicants, this follow-up process was not convened by the Presiding Member, as required by law.

The Assembly Members argue that, under the Constitution and the Local Governance Act, only the Presiding Member has the authority to convene and preside over such meetings.

The plaintiffs, comprising the Presiding Member and seven other Assembly Members, have filed an application for an injunction at the High Court. They seek to halt Musah from acting as MCE until the legal issues surrounding the confirmation process are resolved.

Hohoe United have secured historic promotion to the Ghana Premier League after defeating Inter Allies 3-1 on the penultimate weekend of the Division One League Zone III season.

The win, their fifth in a row, crowned a remarkable run of form and sealed their place at the summit of the table ahead of their final match against Great Olympics. It is a significant achievement for the Volta Region-based side, which only recently emerged on the national stage.

Hohoe United was formed after Liberty Professionals exited competitive league football in 2023, with new owners, led by Hohoe MP John-Peter Amewu, acquiring Liberty’s Division One slot.

The Ghana Football Association formally approved the name change following the submission of the required legal documents, making Hohoe United the club’s new identity. Under the terms of the change, the club remains responsible for all rights and obligations of Liberty Professionals.

With 22 wins from 29 games, Hohoe United have impressed with their organized play and consistent performances. Their nearest rivals, Port City, dropped points against True Democracy, making it mathematically impossible to catch up.

The club’s rise brings fresh excitement to next season’s Premier League, as Hohoe United prepares to represent the Volta Region at the highest level of Ghanaian football for the first time.

Some 4,000 migrants reach Crete since January, new figures show

0

That means that the route from Tobruk in Libya to Crete is becoming the new central refugee route, as no other Greek island has seen more refugees arrive this year.

Around 5,100 people reached the island in 2024, according to a statement by the union of water police officers in Crete. This year, some 4,000 people have already arrived.

The union said it was concerned that the numbers will rise even higher in the summer when weather conditions improve.

The coastguard estimates that thousands of people are waiting in Tobruk to cross to Europe.

A total of 11,305 migrants have arrived in Greece by boat this year, as of May 18, according to the UN refugee agency, with Crete accounting for almost a third of the arrivals.

Last year, around 54,000 people arrived in Greece by sea.

Under the EU’s asylum regulations, people must apply for refugee status in the member state where they arrive. Due to their geographical location, countries such as Greece and Italy see higher numbers of applications, from people making the perilous boat journey as they flee war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa.

Athens is calling for a fairer distribution of the refugees within the EU and is resisting Berlin’s plans to send refugees back to Greece if they have already been granted asylum there.

Gold Stars and Asante Kotoko play out goalless draw in title-chasing stalemate

0

Bibiani Gold Stars and Asante Kotoko were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw in their highly anticipated Ghana Premier League Matchweek 32 showdown at the Bibiani Park on Sunday a result that dents both clubs’ hopes of catching leaders Nations FC in the title race.

The draw came on a weekend where Nations FC boosted their title credentials with a vital win over FC Samartex, stretching their lead at the top.

Gold Stars now trail by three points, while Kotoko are five points off the pace, with only two matches remaining in the season.Despite the high stakes and pre-match hype, the game unfolded as a cagey, tactical battle.

Both teams showed glimpses of attacking intent and created chances, but strong defensive displays and a lack of cutting edge in the final third ensured the deadlock remained.

The intensity of the clash was evident throughout, with both midfields locked in a physical contest. Goalkeepers on either end were called into action, but neither side could find the moment of brilliance needed to tilt the tie in their favour.

While a point keeps Gold Stars and Kotoko in mathematical contention for the title, their fate now rests heavily on Nations FC slipping up in their final games. Gold Stars will next host Berekum Chelsea before wrapping up the season away to Accra Lions.

Asante Kotoko, meanwhile, must overcome a tricky run-in with Medeama and Vision FC as they cling to fading hopes of lifting the title.

President Mahama calls for investment in educational initiatives

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has, on the occasion of the African Union (AU) Day, called for investment in educational initiatives to promote a deeper understanding of African history, culture and contributions to the world.

This, he said, was not a simple task but required courage, determination and a unified front.

The President appealed in a message to mark the 62nd AU Day, which is on the theme “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations”.

The African Union (AU) is a continental body consisting of the 55 member states that make up the countries of the African Continent.

It was officially launched in 2002 as a successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU, 1963-1999).

The AU Day, which is also known as Africa Day (formerly African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day) is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity on 25 May 1963.

President Mahama said the African Union had declared 2025 the year for Justice for Africans and People of African descent through reparations.

“As the AU champion for this critical cause, I’m deeply committed to working with you all to achieve this vital objective,” he stated.

“For too long, the legacy of slavery, colonialism and neocolonialism has cast a long shadow on the lives and progress of Africans and people of African descent.”

He noted that the historical injustices had left deep scars, and reparations were not merely about financial compensation, they were about acknowledging the profound and enduring damage inflicted on their people.

The President said they were about confronting the uncomfortable truths of their past and taking concrete steps to rectify these wrongs.

“We seek justice, justice that encompasses a comprehensive range of measures, including official and unequivocal apologies from the nations and institutions responsible for perpetrating these historical injustices.”

He reiterated that addressing the crippling debt-bedding that continued to stifle economic growth in many African nations, a direct consequence of exploitation and unfair trade practices.

He said providing resources and expertise to empower African nations to achieve sustainable development and participate fully in the global economy was paramount.

President Mahama noted that returning stolen artefacts and cultural treasures that rightfully belonged to their heritage, stating that it required Africans to engage in meaningful dialogue with those responsible and to advocate tirelessly for their rights.

The President called on his colleague African leaders, civil society organisations and youth groups and members of the diaspora to join hands in this important endeavour.

“Let us work together to build a future where justice prevails, where the wounds of the past are healed and where the potential of every African and person of African descent is fully realised,” he said.

“Let Africa Day 2025 be a turning point.

Let us reaffirm our commitment to building a continent of prosperity, opportunity and equality for all our people.”

He urged his fellow African leaders to let the pursuit of reparations be a testament to their resilience, determination and unwavering belief in a brighter future.

“Happy Africa Day. Let us move together, united in purpose, towards a just and equitable future for all Africans and people of African descent.”

Mahama calls for collaboration to address rising indiscipline in SHSs

0

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed deep concern over the growing trend of indiscipline in Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country.

His comments echo warnings from the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), which recently decried the erosion of discipline in schools. NAGRAT has given the government an ultimatum to address the situation by the end of the month or face protective action from teachers against violent students.

Speaking during a meeting with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference at the Jubilee House on Friday, May 23, 2025, President Mahama emphasized the need for collective action to reverse the trend.

“There is a breakdown of values and morals, and that is creating some issues in our schools. There have been incidents where you find students with guns in our public schools. There is also the student who almost lost her eyesight because a student fired a gun,” he said.

The President also questioned how issues such as curriculum design, moral education, student discipline, and teacher absenteeism were being addressed.

“So, what do we do about our curriculum, moral education, discipline, and teacher absenteeism? The inspectorate division of the GES cannot be everywhere at the same time to make sure that teachers are in school,” he noted.

Mahama called for closer cooperation between the Ghana Education Service and faith-based institutions to ensure accountability and enhance monitoring.

“So, how can we collaborate with the churches and find out whether the teachers who have been posted to these schools are actually going to schools and teaching? I think collaboration will help solve the issue,” he added.

On a separate issue, President Mahama described the fight against illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, as a deeply complex challenge, exacerbated by the country’s current economic difficulties and high youth unemployment.

He observed that limited job opportunities have led many unskilled youth to engage in illegal mining activities to survive.

President Mahama also drew a distinction between galamsey and legitimate small-scale mining, stating, “Small-scale mining, when properly regulated, is not illegal.”

Former Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has hinted that the Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, will contest for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidacy.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Appiah-Kubi stated that preparations are underway for Dr. Acheampong to lead the party into the next presidential election, describing him as the ideal candidate to unify and revitalise the NPP.

“The task on our hearts is to present a great candidate who can redeem our party, and Dr. Bryan Acheampong is preparing himself for that mission. He will speak for himself in due course, but I am only a messenger. From what I know, he is the one—and his work speaks volumes,” he said.

According to Appiah-Kubi, Dr. Acheampong represents a combination of intellectual capacity and business acumen that sets him apart from other contenders.

“If we are looking for a candidate with intellectual prowess, Bryan is the one. If we want a successful business mogul, he’s that too. So with him, we’re killing two birds with one stone… he is a symbol of victory,” he added.

He further emphasised the NPP’s capability to develop Ghana, noting that the current internal divisions must be resolved to ensure the party’s return to power.

It appears both the Hajj task force put in place by the government and Ghanaian pilgrims embarking on the 2025 Hajj are facing recurrent challenging moments.

After Ghanaian pilgrims who arrived in Makkah early complained about poor facilities allocated to them which the task force said it was addressing, another challenge of poor accommodation facilities and feeding have emerged.

A number of frustrated pilgrims have taken to social media to express their frustrations over what they term as poor experience.

The increasing concerns have got concerned members of the Zongo community calling on the government’s Hajj task force to up their game.

Educationist, Aisha Adam, lamented what she called the “mistreatment” of Ghanaian pilgrims asking “did any member of the task force Pilgrims Affairs Office of Ghana inspect this property before paying for it?”

“430 pilgrims were checked into this dilapidated building to stay for a month since yesterday morning?,” she also wrote.

“There were assurances since yesterday evening that the hotel will be changed today. It’s 3pm here already and there is still no show!!!!!!! Hajj is a sacred journey. The least we can do is to provide accommodation that is dignifying for human use,” she added. All Ghanaian pilgrims deserve better. This is what we got for trusting the system,” she added.

The Hajj task force are also said to be mismanaging this year’s Hajj with further accusations that they have gone in for substandard facilities following the reduction of Hajj fares.

Former Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, has thrown his full support behind former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, describing him as the right candidate to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections.

In a video shared by GHOne TV on Sunday, May 25, 2025, Appiah-Kubi, speaking to the media, confirmed that the MP for Abetifi will contest in the party’s presidential primaries with the aim of securing the flagbearer position.

He also mentioned that Bryan Acheampong possesses the leadership qualities and competence needed to bring the NPP back into power and advance the country’s development.

“Bryan Acheampong is well-educated, and his good works speak for themselves. He owns Rock City Hotel, the biggest hotel in Africa. He is also a generous person, supporting many students at Achimota Senior High School among others,” he stated in Twi.

“He is the only person who can bring the party back to power. The NPP is the only party that can develop Ghana. We believe we can do better, and Bryan Acheampong is the one who can deliver that,” the former lawmaker asserted.

This endorsement follows a report by GHOne TV indicating Bryan Acheampong’s intention to contest for the NPP flagbearer position with the caption “Bryan Acheampong to contest NPP flagbearership,” accompanied with an image of the former Minister of Agriculture under the Akufo-Addo administration.

His candidacy has already attracted support from several prominent figures within the party, including former NPP member Hopeson Adorye, MP for Mpraeso Davis Ansah Opoku, and Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi himself. These individuals have publicly expressed their commitment to campaigning for Acheampong’s bid.

Bryan Acheampong brings extensive experience to the race, having served in multiple high-level government roles, including as Minister of State at the Ministry of the Interior and Minister of Food and Agriculture.

He holds a PhD in Information Systems from the University of Ghana and a certificate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

As the opposition NPP gears up for its internal elections, Bryan Acheampong’s entry into the flagbearership race is expected to add a dynamic element to the contest.

NCCE Ho Municipal celebrates AU Day with Power Brokers Academy

0

By Michael Foli Jackidy

Ho (V/R), May 25, GNA – The Ho Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) commemorated this year’s African Union (AU) Day in partnership with Power Brokers Academy, engaging pupils and parents in a vibrant durbar filled with educational and cultural activities.

In her welcome address, Mrs. Peace Charity Adzah, Proprietress of Power Brokers Academy, emphasised that AU Day was not only a reflection on Africa’s history but a celebration of African identity, pride, and the shared aspiration for peace, unity, and prosperity across the continent.

“Without unity, people from different cultural backgrounds, locations, and histories cannot come together to improve their lives,” she said.

Mrs. Adzah also encouraged parents to remain steadfast in supporting their children, regardless of the difficulties they might face.

Delivering the keynote address on the theme “Unity is Strength,” Rev. Vincent Adzika, NCCE Municipal Director, highlighted the power of unity in driving progress.

“Unity doesn’t mean we are all the same; it means we are stronger together. The African Union was established to unite African countries, amplify our collective voice, and build a peaceful and prosperous continent. When we are divided, we fall behind. But when we unite, we rise,” he said.

Rev. Adzika encouraged the students to be active participants in Africa’s future by embracing diversity, promoting justice, and working toward collective growth.

He also gave a brief history of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU)—the precursor to the AU—founded on May 25, 1963, with 32 member states, and now expanded to 55 member countries.

This year’s celebration is on the theme: “The Year of Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.”

The celebration was marked by a colourful durbar where pupils showcased their talents through poetry recitals, singing of the AU Anthem, modeling, dance performances, and presentations on the history of the AU.

‘Ghanaian prisoners are fed with 60 pesewas per meal’ – Prison officer reveals

0

A file photo of the Ghana Prison Service A file photo of the Ghana Prison Service

A Ghanaian prison officer has revealed the harsh conditions inmates face due to the extremely low budget allocated for their feeding.

In a video shared on X on May 25, 2025, the unidentified officer disclosed that each meal served to prisoners costs less than one Ghana cedi.

He explained that a single meal costs just 60 pesewas, amounting to GH¢1.80 per day for three meals.

“We feed them with GH¢1.80 a day. In the morning, we give them food that costs 60 pesewas. The same applies to the afternoon and evening,” he said.

He further highlighted the scale of the problem by pointing out how inadequate the budget is, especially when applied to large inmate populations.

“Let’s imagine we have 1,006 inmates in the prison. Now, multiply 60 pesewas by 1,006 people, it won’t even add up to GH¢1,000. Also, consider the kind of people in jail. What can food worth 60 pesewas really do for them?”

Despite the challenges, the officer commended his superiors for managing to provide three meals a day under such limited resources.

“Let me applaud our regional commanders and OICs because they are magicians. They somehow manage to provide three square meals a day,” he added.

The video has since sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many users expressing disappointment in the government. Several have condemned the low food budget, describing it as inhumane and unacceptable.

FDA seizes illicit shisha, vapes and cigars in Accra

0

Vapes are illegal in Ghana Vapes are illegal in Ghana

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has seized large quantities of unregistered and illicit tobacco products from four facilities in Accra during a targeted enforcement operation.

The confiscated items included 15 brands of illegal shisha (waterpipe) flavours, three brands of illicit cigarettes, seven brands of nitrous oxide canisters, 21 brands of unregistered vapes, 10 brands of illegal cigars, and four brands of unauthorised tobacco wraps.

The exercise, conducted in collaboration with two police officers, forms part of activities marking this year’s World No Tobacco Day on May 31.

It targeted six facilities located in Kwabenya, East Legon, Abeka, Fadama, Tabora, and Achimota. Two of the facilities were closed at the time of the inspection.

Jemima Odonkor, Head of the Tobacco Products Department at the FDA, said the operation reflects the Authority’s ongoing efforts to rid the market of harmful and unapproved products.

“The seized items entered the country through unapproved routes. The Authority will apply the necessary legal and regulatory sanctions to the distributors and sellers,” she stated.

Ms. Odonkor reaffirmed the FDA’s commitment to protecting public health and reducing the availability of harmful tobacco products. She added that the Authority will intensify public education campaigns, particularly targeting schools.

“We will be visiting schools to educate our students on the harmful effects of tobacco products to safeguard them from illicit drugs,” she said.

The FDA continues to urge the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious products or activities related to tobacco sales.

Green chillies as ‘lip plumpers’ and other damaging lies of social media influencers

0

In today’s digital age, influencers hold significant power in shaping perceptions and lifestyles, especially among Gen Z and millennials. Yet, behind the glittering facades, a disturbing pattern has emerged: Fabricated lifestyles crafted to attract attention, boost follower numbers, and profit from misleading content.

The US experienced a widespread influencer confession trend ahead of a “possible” TikTok ban. High-profile TikTok stars shocked followers by openly admitting their content was fabricated. Lexi Hidalgo, known for her cozy morning “coffee talks” with 2.7 million followers, confessed she never drank the coffee featured in her videos. Similarly, DIY (Do It Yourself) influencer Kaeli Mae, who amassed 14 million followers, admitted to never using the unique ice cubes she showcased. Even TikTok’s top star, Charli D’Amelio, clarified past deceptive posts, leaving fans feeling betrayed. These confessions generated millions of reactions, intensifying debates around authenticity and influencer responsibility.

Another case emerged in December 2024 when Victoria “Woah Vicky” Rose, staged a kidnapping in Nigeria for attention. After creating panic with ransom demands, Vicky casually revealed the kidnapping was a prank, prompting widespread backlash for trivialising serious issues. Her controversial stunt underscored the extreme lengths influencers may go for online clout. In Italy, Chiara Ferragni, with a massive 28 million Instagram followers, faced criminal charges in early 2025 for misleading charity claims. Ferragni marketed Christmas cakes and Easter eggs claiming proceeds supported a children’s hospital.

Italy’s competition authorities fined Ferragni €1.1 million, demanding additional compensation for affected charities. Her case became a stark reminder of the real-world consequences of influencers exploiting goodwill. France was also affected by influencer fraud through the case of “Swagg Man”, who portrayed himself as a luxury-obsessed crypto millionaire. His lavish lifestyle, flaunted across Instagram and TikTok, attracted thousands of young followers whom he defrauded of €1.8 million through fake crypto and real estate investments. His eventual arrest spurred French lawmakers into passing the groundbreaking “loi influenceurs” in 2024, introducing strict regulations to curb influencer deception, especially in cryptocurrency and luxury lifestyle promotions.

While Western cases often featured sensationalised individual incidents, India’s influencer disinformation landscape reveals a deeper systemic problem, intertwined with the allure of quick wealth and luxury. Notably, influencers increasingly promote crypto trading platforms and gambling apps. Young followers, largely Gen Z and millennials, were often left financially devastated by losses. Finance influencers aggressively marketed cryptocurrency, presenting unverified claims of overnight wealth, exacerbating financial instability among youth. Influencers frequently promoted gambling apps disguised as “gaming” platforms, enticing impressionable young audiences with promises of easy winnings. These promotions often hid the addictive and financially devastating nature of gambling.

The deceptive glamour around luxury lifestyle in India extends beyond cryptocurrencies. Influencers regularly stage elaborate photoshoots with rented luxury cars, mansions, and expensive accessories, creating a facade of opulence. This deceptive practice has surged, misleading young Indians into chasing unattainable lifestyles. A Digital Marketing Institute (2024) survey found that 60 per cent of consumers trust influencer recommendations.

Misuse of the Indian influencer landscape goes further, with cases of influencers selling counterfeit luxury products and promoting health and wellness scams. Fake cosmetic products and fraudulent supplements promising unrealistic health benefits have flooded social media, misleading consumers and risking public health. Another alarming practice involves Indian influencers purchasing photos and videos from agencies to fake attendance at high-profile VIP events. In 2024, a Bengaluru-based woman exposed services that allow influencers to buy curated content from exclusive events, falsely creating the illusion of attending luxury concerts and gatherings. This phenomenon, described as “dystopian” highlights how pervasive and elaborate influencer disinformation has become.

Further demonstrating dangerous influencer disinformation, beauty influencer Shubhangi Anand created outrage with her “natural lip plumper” video, encouraging followers to rub raw green chillies on their lips. Her video, amassing over 22 million views, alarmed medical professionals and fans alike, leading major news outlets to condemn such reckless advice. This incident exemplified how influencer misinformation in India is not just financially damaging but also physically harmful. Recognising these growing issues, the newly formed self-regulatory India Influencer Governance Council (IIGC), released a comprehensive Code of Standards for Indian influencers in April 2025.

The global phenomenon of influencer lifestyle disinformation undeniably carries significant implications. While shocking admissions and high-profile scandals in the US and Europe command headlines, India’s subtler but pervasive issues involving crypto scams, gambling promotions, and fabricated luxury lifestyles may inflict deeper societal damage. Young followers worldwide face increasing mental health risks, financial losses, and physical harm due to misleading influencer practices. Combating influencer-driven disinformation requires proactive efforts from social media platforms, regulators, and audiences alike, fostering a culture prioritising authenticity and responsible content creation.

Police arrest one more suspect in the killing of 26-year-old footballer in Tamale

0

The police in the Northern Region have apprehended another suspect in the case involving the killing of 26-year-old footballer Yakubu Mohammed Habib.

The suspect, Abdul Majeed, and his accomplice, Abdul Majeed Saeed, were declared wanted by the Ghana Police Service in March 2025 after they went into hiding.

The killing occurred between February 25 and 26, 2025, in Fou, a suburb of the Sagnarigu Municipality in the Northern Region.

A dispute between Yakubu’s brother, Mustapha Muktadel, and a neighbour, Baba Habib, sparked the incident.

According to community members, Baba Habib and his friends assaulted Mustapha Muktadel on February 25 at around 9:00 p.m.

Later that night, Baba Habib called Yakubu’s brother, asking to meet him, but he declined.

At around 12:30 a.m. on February 26, Baba Habib returned with a group of about 20 people, leading to a confrontation.

During the altercation, one of the individuals retrieved a pump-action gun from a Mitsubishi Pajero and began firing, hitting Yakubu Mohammed Habib.

The victim was rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) but died from his injuries at around 4:30 a.m. The police have now arrested multiple suspects in connection with the incident.

The family of the late Yakubu Mohammed Habib had been conducting surveillance at the residence of suspect Abdul Majeed Saeed for three months, hoping to apprehend him.

On the day of the arrest, their efforts paid off when Abdul Majeed was spotted at the house.

According to Yakubu’s brother, Yakubu Ibrahim, they informed the police as soon as they confirmed Abdul Majeed’s presence.

He said that when the police arrived, Abdul Majeed attempted to escape through the back door but was spotted. The police searched the premises, ransacking the place, but couldn’t find him initially.

Yakubu Ibrahim explained that the police found signs of recent occupation, including a shirt hanging, a phone on charge, and leftover drinks.

However, Abdul Majeed was nowhere to be found—until he was spotted hiding in the ceiling.

“The police searched all the rooms but couldn’t find him until he moved into the ceiling,” he said.

Mr Ibrahim added that Abdul Majeed allegedly had several “juju” items in the room and was holding a small red object, seemingly under the impression that he was invisible. When asked to get down, he lay still, thinking he couldn’t be seen.

“However, we eventually pushed him, and he fell to the ground, where he was arrested,” he explained.

Abdul Majeed sustained some injuries during the arrest and is currently receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where he is handcuffed.

One of the family members also sustained injuries during the arrest.

“I saw him at the TTH. They have handcuffed him. One of our colleagues also sustained injuries,” Mr Ibrahim said.
