Select achievers as chiefs – Daasebre Ayebiahwe urges traditional kingmakers

Paramount Chief of the Odau people of Akyem Etwereso, Daasebre Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiahwe Paramount Chief of the Odau people of Akyem Etwereso, Daasebre Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiahwe

The Paramount Chief of the Odau people of Akyem Etwereso, Daasebre Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiahwe, has urged kingmakers in the various traditional areas of the country to select royals who are ambitious and development oriented as chiefs to advance the course of their communities.

According to him, the modern system provides diverse political and socio-economic challenges that require dynamic leadership to tackle. He stressed that being a royal alone is not enough for one to ascend to a throne in modern times if the chieftaincy institution is to continue to be respected and take its pride of place in society.

“People should not occupy chieftaincy positions just because they are royals; they must be royals who have good character and have made significant economic achievements. How can we make someone who cannot take care of himself a chief, how is he going to be able to bring development to his people when he cannot develop himself?”.

Daasebre Ayebiawhe made these remarks during the celebration of the 4th Akwasidae of the year which was marked with the entire Odau Traditional Council with colourful celebrations, traditions and culture at Akyem Etwereso.

Reacting to a proposal for the appointment of a chief for one of his towns, Daasebre Ayebiawhe said “Gone are the days when entire communities used to work and farm to sustain their chiefs. These days, the citizens expect more from their chiefs and it is incumbent on us to seek to influence resource allocation to develop our people.” he continued, “It is not enough to be a custodian of tradition. Chiefs must be agents of development. We must influence our citizens to invest in property and businesses in our hometowns and villages, we must influence our wealthy friends to invest in our communities. We must influence our national government to invest in our infrastructure, We must influence NGOs to invest and make a meaningful impact in our lives. We must influence international agencies to support the development of our people.

When we do these as Chiefs, then we are prioritizing the wellbeing of our people and therefore leading to the betterment of their lives.”.

Daasebre Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiawhe bemoaned the numerous disputes surrounding chieftaincy and vowed to work hard to bring those within his traditional area to peaceful settlements.

Daasebre Ayebiawhe capitalised on the Akwasidae celebration to introduce businessman, Nana Osei Afrifa, to his people as the nominated Twafohene of Akyem Odau Traditional area. Nana Osei Afrifa, an IT Specialist and businessman is the CEO of Afrifanom Limited, a Ghanaian IT Company that specialises in Software Development. He is the brain behind Ghana’s National Digital Address System. Nana Osei Afrifa is set to take his traditional oath of office as Twafohene on Monday 7th July 2025.

Daasebre Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiawhe was enstooled as the Paramount Chief of the Odau Traditional Area in 2021. The Odau Traditional area, which falls under the Benkum Division of Akyem Abuakwa, has 12 Palanquin Town Chiefs (Apakanfuo) and 46 Village Chiefs (Adikro).

It covers parts of the Asante Akim South District, Akyemansa District, Kwaebebrim District and West Akim District. Daasebre Ayebiawhe has since constructed a multi-storey palace complex at Akyem Etwereso, the traditional capital and is embarking steadily on other projects such as Kwaneakwa tourist site, a hospital and a Police Station.

He believes that the prosperity of his reign is in alignment with the well-being of his people.

Prophet Owusu Bempah Drops Revelation About Dr Anne Sansa Daly

Popular Ghanaian prophet, Isaac Owusu Bempah, has dropped some revelations about Anne Sansa Daly, who was recently removed from the NHIA board of directors.

Over the past few days, many have said that Anne Sansa Daly is the girlfriend of Prophet Isaac Owusu Bempah. This claim was first made by Afia Schwarzenegger.

The man of God has strongly denied claims made by actress and social media personality Afia Schwarzenegger. The man of God said that he doesn’t know the lady. He added that he married a woman and gave birth to all his children so there is no evidence to show that he is married to another woman who is Anne Sansa Daly.

Afia Schwarzenegger made the claims shortly after news broke that President John Dramani Mahama had sacked Anne Sansa Daly from the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) board due to concerns about her license to practice medicine in Ghana. The actress alleged that the woman was romantically involved with the popular preacher and used that connection to gain the board appointment.

But speaking during church service on Sunday, June 1, 2025, Prophet Owusu Bempah rejected the claims. He told his congregation that he has never had any romantic relationship with Anne Sansa Daly. “That lady is not my girlfriend. I don’t know why Afia Schwarzenegger is spreading lies about me,” he said.

The prophet added that he is disappointed in Afia Schwarzenegger for dragging his name into a matter he knows nothing about. He described her actions as dangerous and warned her to stop spreading false news. “I am sending this strong warning to Afia Schwarzenegger. Don’t mention my name in your lies again,” he said firmly.

This reaction comes just days after the presidency removed Anne Sansa Daly from the NHIA board. Sources say she was removed because she claimed to be a medical doctor without a valid license to practice in Ghana. President Mahama has since appointed Professor Dr. Ernest Yorke to take her place.

The Best Minister In Mahama’s First Five Month In Office Revealed

0

Ghanaians have spoken, and the results are clear. After just five months in office, President John Dramani Mahama’s new ministers are already making a big impact. Among them, one name stands out as the best-performing minister so far is Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister for Finance.

In a recent public opinion poll, many Ghanaians were asked to name the minister who has impressed them the most since Mahama returned to power in January 2025. The responses came from people across all regions of the country. While many ministers were praised for their hard work, Dr. Ato Forson received the highest number of votes.

Dr. Forson has been praised for stabilizing Ghana’s economy in a short period. One of his major achievements so far is reducing the exchange rate of the Ghana cedi to the US dollar. When he took office, one dollar was selling for 16 cedis. Today, it is around 10.2 cedis. This has brought some hope to businesses and ordinary Ghanaians who depend on imports.

Other ministers who received public praise include John Jinapor, Minister of Energy and Petroleum, and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who is serving as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, also got recognition for his leadership in the region. Greater Accra’s Linda Ocloo was also mentioned among the hardworking ministers.

Also making the list were Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources; Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Minister of Health; Dominic Ayine, Attorney General and Minister of Justice; and Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communications and Digital Technology.

Despite the strong performances of many of these ministers, Ghanaians have chosen Dr. Ato Forson as the standout minister in President Mahama’s government so far.

Lace has long been synonymous with grace, elegance, and timeless femininity. From intricate Victorian patterns to modern minimalist designs, lace has evolved into a versatile fabric that suits a variety of fashion styles and occasions. Today, lace remains a staple in women’s wardrobes, offering a delicate yet striking aesthetic that complements both casual and formal outfits.

One of the most captivating aspects of lace is its ability to enhance a woman’s natural elegance. Whether it’s a full-length lace gown, a lace-accented blouse, or a lace-trimmed skirt, the fabric adds a layer of texture and sophistication. For evening wear, black or deep-colored lace dresses exude mystery and allure, while white or pastel lace is often reserved for bridal wear and summer events due to its light and ethereal quality.

Lace is also highly adaptable. It can be styled in both classic and contemporary ways. For instance, a lace crop top paired with high-waisted jeans offers a modern, chic look perfect for daytime outings. Alternatively, lace jumpsuits or trousers are making waves in the fashion world, bringing innovation to traditional lace usage.

In addition to clothing, lace appears in accessories such as gloves, scarves, and lingerie, further showcasing its versatility. Designers frequently use lace to add a touch of vintage charm or romantic flair to a collection.

Ultimately, lace style for women continues to be a beloved choice for those who value beauty, intricacy, and timeless fashion. Its ability to blend tradition with modernity makes it a unique and enduring fabric in the world of women’s fashion.

Strong exports, remittances driving Cedi appreciation – UMB Capital Finance Head

0

The sustained appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against major international currencies is being driven by a combination of strong export performance, rising remittances, and coordinated fiscal and monetary policies, according to Nelson Cudjoe Kuagbedzi, Head of Finance at UMB Capital.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, June 2, 2025, Kuagbedzi pointed to key economic fundamentals that have contributed to the cedi’s continued stability and significant gains in the forex market.

Between January and late May 2025, the cedi appreciated from approximately GHS 15.00 to GHS 10.20 per USD—representing a cumulative gain of about 32%.

Explaining the reasons behind the strong performance, Kuagbedzi said:

“The appreciation of the cedi is a result of the performance of our traditional exports. Gold has been doing well, cocoa has also been doing well. Our non-traditional exports have also seen strong performance.”

He further noted that increased remittance inflows have boosted Ghana’s international reserves.

“As of the end of April, our growth in international reserves was about $10.7 billion, which represents about 4.7 months of import cover,” he stated.

Addressing the dynamics of the foreign exchange market, Kuagbedzi said:

“There is always the issue of demand and supply. As it stands now, the Bank of Ghana has enough forex to meet the demand of those who actually need it, especially those engaged in international transactions.”

He also praised the synergy between the Bank of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance for creating a stable macroeconomic environment.

“The BoG’s own monetary policy, in addition to fiscal strategies by the Ministry of Finance, is also playing the magic,” Kuagbedzi added.

How Bawumia & Co Nailed Wontumi

0

By Richmond Keelson, Ontario, Canada

The persona of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wuntumi—continues to stir emotions. His public image is laced with annoyance, buffoonery, and outright dejection.

On the flip side, however, there is a pretentious acceptance— that his irrational traits are, in fact, deliberate and carefully crafted to serve a specific agenda and its intended beneficiaries.

Parliament has approved a monumental GHS10 billion allocation for the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in 2025, marking a significant boost to Ghana’s public healthcare financing.

In a report by insightghana.com.gh, this record-breaking funding, up from GHC6 billion in 2024, will revolutionize healthcare delivery, providing millions with access to quality medical care.

Breakdown of the Allocation

The NHIA will disburse the approved amount as follows:

– Claims payment: GHC6.5 billion (65.1%)

– NHIA operational expenses: GHC1.2 billion (12.3%)

– District office support: GHC124 million (1.2%)

– Allocation to Ministry of Health: GHC984 million (9.8%)

New Priorities in 2025

Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, revealed that the increased funding will support primary healthcare delivery, fill revenue gaps created by donor withdrawal, and fund initiatives like the Ghana Trust Fund (also known as ‘Mahama Care’).

Notably, dialysis treatment will now be covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), a critical milestone for patients with kidney disease.

Focus on Chronic Diseases

The Mahama Care initiative will prioritise funding for chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like kidney infections and stroke, which account for 45% of mortality in Ghana.

This development demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring quality healthcare for all Ghanaians, regardless of financial situation.

Funding Sources

The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) is financed through:

– National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL)

– SSNIT contributors

– Returns on NHIF investments

Impact on Healthcare Delivery

The GHS10 billion funding will enable the NHIA to:

– Expand coverage to more Ghanaians

– Improve healthcare infrastructure

– Enhance quality of healthcare services

– Reduce out-of-pocket expenses for patients

This historic allocation marks a significant step towards universal healthcare in Ghana.

Andy Appiah-Kubi is the lawyer for Chairman Wontumi Andy Appiah-Kubi is the lawyer for Chairman Wontumi

Andy Appiah-Kubi, legal representative for Bernard Antwi Boasiako (popularly known as Chairman Wontumi), has announced that his team will maintain a strict focus on the legal aspects of the case to secure his client’s release.

This decision comes as Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), faces detention by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) for allegedly causing financial loss to the state.

The arrest has sparked nationwide protests by NPP members and heightened political tensions.

In a report by insightghana.com.gh, despite the charged atmosphere, Appiah-Kubi emphasised in an exclusive interview on Friday, May 30, “I beg you, all of you; I will stay out of the politics and theatrics and I’ll do the work within the law.”

Appiah-Kubi confirmed that he and his team had successfully met the GHC 50 million bail requirement with two sureties, stating, “We have been able to provide the sureties; that one I can assure you.”

However, despite clearing the bail conditions, Chairman Wontumi will remain in detention over the weekend due to a new legal complication.

“We encountered a challenge, a legal challenge unknown to me; there was an application that prohibits us,” Appiah-Kubi revealed.

He added that this unexpected development would be addressed in court on Monday.

The lawyer thanked Bryan Acheampong for assisting in filing the necessary property documentation, assuring that the value of the submitted assets exceeded the required amount.

As the case unfolds, all eyes are on the legal system to deliver justice.

Appiah-Kubi remains optimistic that Monday could bring freedom for Chairman Wontumi once the newly emerged legal roadblock is addressed.

Meanwhile, the lawyer denied rumors of Wontumi’s alleged hunger strike, saying, “Two days ago in the evening, I had dinner with him. I’m going to see him now at EOCO. After that, he will respond whether this happened today or yesterday.”

The situation continues to draw attention, with NPP supporters condemning the bail conditions as “unreasonable” and politically motivated.

Kwasea, Keep Quiet – Okatakyie Afrifa Blasts Kwaku Manu Over Mahama Insult Controversy

Okatakyie Afrifa has once again found himself in the middle of controversy, this time taking direct aim at Kumawood actor Kwaku Manu over his comments regarding insults directed at President John Mahama. The outspoken media personality did not hold back, launching a scathing attack on Manu for what he sees as an attempt to shield Mahama from public criticism.

The dispute began when Kwaku Manu publicly called on Mahama to introduce legislation that would criminalize online insults against prominent figures, including the President and the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Manu argued that social media has become a breeding ground for unwarranted attacks on respected individuals, suggesting that offenders should face a one-year jail sentence.

Afrifa, known for his fiery rhetoric, wasted no time in responding. He dismissed Manu’s concerns, arguing that public figures, especially politicians, must be prepared to face scrutiny and criticism. He accused Manu of attempting to silence dissent and questioned why similar calls were not made when other leaders faced harsh criticism. Afrifa’s response was blunt and unapologetic, making it clear that he believes freedom of speech should not be compromised.

The exchange has sparked intense debate across social media, with supporters of both men weighing in. Some agree with Manu, believing that Ghana’s political discourse has become too toxic, while others side with Afrifa, asserting that criticism—however harsh—is an essential part of democracy. The clash between the two personalities highlights the growing tension between respect for authority and the right to express dissent.

As the controversy unfolds, one thing is certain: the battle between political commentary and freedom of speech continues to shape Ghana’s media landscape. Whether Manu’s proposal gains traction or Afrifa’s stance prevails, the discussion underscores the delicate balance between protecting public figures and ensuring that citizens retain their right to voice their opinions. The coming days will reveal whether this debate leads to meaningful discourse or simply fades into the background of Ghana’s ever-evolving political scene.

Tears Flow as Prez Mahama Allegedly Demolishes Konadu Agyemang Rawlings’ House Amid Ken Agyapong

0

In a shocking turn of events, reports have surfaced alleging that former President John Dramani Mahama has orchestrated the demolition of a residence linked to Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, the former First Lady of Ghana. The incident has sparked outrage, with Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong delivering a fiery response that has further fueled the controversy.

According to circulating reports, the property in question was situated on a Ramsar site, an area designated for environmental protection. The demolition has led to widespread speculation about the motivations behind the move, with some suggesting political undertones while others argue it was a necessary enforcement of land regulations.

Eyewitnesses claim that the demolition was carried out under the directive of authorities, leaving many in disbelief. Videos circulating online show emotional reactions from affected individuals, with some expressing frustration over the perceived injustice.

Never one to shy away from controversy, Kennedy Agyapong has reportedly reacted with intense criticism, condemning the alleged actions of Mahama. In a widely shared video, Agyapong is seen passionately addressing the issue, calling out what he describes as political victimization. His remarks have resonated with many, further polarizing public opinion on the matter.

The incident has reignited discussions about land ownership, political power struggles, and governance in Ghana. While some view the demolition as a necessary enforcement of environmental laws, others see it as an unjustified attack on a prominent political figure.

As the debate rages on, Ghanaians are left questioning the true motives behind the demolition and whether justice will be served. Will this controversy shape future political narratives, or will it fade into the background as another chapter in Ghana’s political history?

Hairstyles for Ladies: Enhancing Beauty and Expression

0

Hairstyles have long been a powerful form of self-expression, especially for women. A lady’s hairstyle can reflect her personality, lifestyle, culture, and even her mood. With a vast array of options available, choosing the right hairstyle can be both exciting and overwhelming. From timeless classics to modern trends, there’s a hairstyle to suit every face shape, hair type, and personal style.

One of the most popular choices is the bob cut. Whether it’s a sleek straight bob or a wavy textured version, this style is favored for its versatility and chic appearance. For women who prefer longer hair, layered cuts can add volume and movement, enhancing the overall look. Layers work particularly well for women with thick or wavy hair, creating a balanced and manageable style.

For those with curly hair, embracing natural curls has become a powerful trend. Styles like the curly afro, twist-outs, or braid-outs allow women to wear their curls proudly while minimizing heat damage. Meanwhile, protective styles such as box braids, cornrows, and twists are not only stylish but also help maintain hair health by reducing breakage and promoting growth.

Updos and buns are elegant options for formal occasions. A high bun or a French twist can give a refined, polished look, perfect for weddings, corporate settings, or social gatherings. On the casual side, ponytails, messy buns, and half-up styles offer a quick yet fashionable solution for daily wear.

Ultimately, the best hairstyle for a lady is one that makes her feel confident and beautiful. It should complement her features, fit her lifestyle, and reflect her individuality. With regular care and a touch of creativity, every woman can enjoy a hairstyle that enhances her natural beauty and personal flair.

Ghanaians In Shóck As Prophet Kofi Oduro Confirms Death

0

A deeply emotional event has recently shaken the life of Prophet Kofi Oduro, the founder and lead pastor of Alabaster International Ministry. During his sermon on Sunday, June 1, 2025, the renowned preacher revealed a heartbreaking personal tragedy: the sudden death of a beloved family member.

Prophet Oduro shared with his congregation that his cousin had tragically collapsed without warning. Those present at the scene tried urgently to transport him to the hospital. However, his large physical build made it extremely difficult for them to move him quickly. Despite their immediate efforts, they were forced to seek help from neighbors to carry him. By the time they succeeded in getting him to the hospital, doctors sadly confirmed that he had passed away.

Clearly shaken, Prophet Oduro spoke with heartfelt emotion about the unpredictability of life and the inevitability of death. He reminded his congregation that no one knows the precise moment when life will come to an end. This painful experience, he said, serves as a sobering reminder of how fragile human existence truly is.

Using the tragic loss as a teachable moment, the prophet encouraged his followers to live godly lives and remain spiritually prepared. He highlighted the biblical truth that life on earth is temporary and that everyone will eventually face judgment. His message resonated as both a personal reflection of his grief and a spiritual call to repentance and dedication to God.

The congregation listened with great empathy, many visibly touched by the announcement. Their silent expressions of support reflected the heavy emotions in the room.

Prophet Oduro, widely respected for his fiery sermons and leadership, has received an outpouring of love and prayers from the Christian community in the wake of this loss. May his cousin’s soul rest peacefully.

‘You couldn’t have made $100,000 in six days without duping people’

Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah and Anne Sansa Daly Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah and Anne Sansa Daly

Media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah has denied claims made by embattled self-styled medical practitioner “Dr” Anne Sansa Daly, who alleged that she made a staggering $100,000 during a six-day trip to Ghana from the United States.

In a video shared online, Anne Sansa Daly who has been exposed as a fake medical doctor, is seen displaying several bundles of dollar bills while boasting that she earned $100,000 through deals with just two hospitals in Ghana.

“Hammond, I want to give you some work to do for me. I want you to send this message to Foster that his Uber cars and his noisy Range Rover, which causes noise pollution… tell him that I said within my six days in Ghana, from just two contracts with two hospitals, I made not less than $100,000.”

However, speaking on his “For The Records” show on Sunday, June 1, 2025, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, who has been leading a campaign to expose Anne Sansa Daly as a fraud, dismissed her claims as outright falsehoods.

He asserted that Daly, who is allegedly known for duping unsuspecting individuals, could only have acquired that kind of money through fraudulent means with the support of US-based Ghanaian media personality Kevin Taylor, whom he accused of being her accomplice.

“It is a big lie. On record, she has not secured any contract deals with any hospitals. She does not own or operate any hospital in Ghana. If she claims to have made such an amount, it could only be through defrauding people with support from Kevin Taylor.

“That is what they do, they blackmail people into paying them. Some of their victims are in government, some are prominent individuals, and others are wealthy men, including one rich Nigerian named Femi. For certain reasons, I won’t mention his full name. This girl duped him for years, feeding him false stories after sleeping with him just once.”

Describing Anne Sansa Daly as a blackmailer, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah displayed screen shots of messages from the former to some of her ‘victims’ where she alleged scammed people.

President John Dramani Mahama on May 28, 2025, revoked the appointment of Anne Sansa Daly from the Board of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), following concerns about her lack of a valid license to practise medicine in Ghana and the US.

Bad News For Ghanaians As Cedi Begins to Weaken Against the Dollar

0

The Bank of Ghana’s latest exchange rate update has sparked discussion among Ghanaians following a slight depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar. The data released on May 30 indicates a minor decline after nearly two months of stability.

As of May 29, the cedi was trading at GH¢10.28 to buy and GH¢10.27 to sell per US dollar. The following day, May 30, saw the rate shift to GH¢10.29 for buying and GH¢10.30 for selling, marking a modest dip in the local currency’s value.

Earlier this year, the Ghanaian cedi was among the world’s top-performing currencies. In April, Bloomberg highlighted the cedi as the best-performing currency globally, attributing its strength to a combination of domestic economic policies under former President Mahama and international factors, including trade tensions between the US and China.

The period of currency strength contributed to a reduction in fuel prices in Ghana. On May 14, the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) announced a cut in pump prices, effective from May 16, supported by declining global petroleum product costs. Additionally, transportation expenses dropped by 15%, providing some relief to consumers.

Despite these positive developments, many Ghanaians report ongoing economic challenges and call for more robust government interventions to stimulate lasting improvement. Online reactions to the recent currency fluctuation varied widely, with some expressing concern, others taking a lighter tone, and a number of commentators reminding the public that minor exchange rate movements are common in any economy.

As the cedi faces its first setback in months, attention now turns to how policymakers will respond to maintain stability and support Ghana’s economic recovery.

Ghana’s Minister Issues Deadline for Telcos to Improve Service Quality

Notably, 40% of any fines imposed will be returned to affected consumers in the form of bonus data or call time, offering a direct compensation model for service lapses.

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations,  Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), has issued a stern warning to Ghana’s major telecom operators, cautioning them to significantly improve service quality by the end of 2025 or face regulatory sanctions and fines.

Speaking after a high-level meeting with the chief executives of MTN Ghana,  Telecel Ghana , and AT , the Minister expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of telecom services across the country. Despite widespread infrastructure, he said, customers—especially in urban centres and regional towns—continue to suffer from inconsistent and poor-quality service.

A recent assessment conducted by the National Communications Authority (NCA ) confirmed these concerns, showing uneven service delivery across all three telecom providers. In response, the Minister announced that a nationwide service quality audit will be conducted in every district capital. Operators will be expected to demonstrate measurable improvements tied to their newly allocated spectrum by December 2025.

Failure to meet quality standards will result in financial penalties. Notably, 40% of any fines imposed will be returned to affected consumers in the form of bonus data or call time, offering a direct compensation model for service lapses.

The telecom companies have committed to a series of upgrades to address the quality issues. MTN Ghana CEO, Stephen Blewett, announced a $230 million investment earmarked for network infrastructure and IT systems in 2024, with further investments pending board approval. The company also plans to open 300 new franchise stores, prioritising underserved communities.

Telecel Ghana’s Chief Operating Officer, Mohamad Ghaddar, said the company is engaged in continuous network optimization and is seeking additional spectrum to handle growing demand. Meanwhile, AT CEO, Leo Skarlatos, pledged significant progress in key performance areas by Q1 2026.

The Minister’s ultimatum signals a shift toward more aggressive regulation in Ghana’s telecom sector as the government pushes for improved digital services to support national development and consumer satisfaction.

UEFA to make rule change to Champions League following PSG victory just one year after new format introduced

0

UEFA are reportedly considering a huge rule change following the conclusion of the 2024/25 Champions League.

Paris Saint-Germain reigned supreme and became only the second French team – after Marseille – to win the competition with a 5-0 win against Inter Milan in Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena in Germany.

19-year-old Desire Doue produced two goals and an assist, which helped him pick up the Player of the Match award, while Achraf Hakimi, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and fellow teenager Senny Mayulu also got on the scoresheet.

After they knocked Liverpool out of the Champions League at the round of 16 stage, Luis Enrique’s side became many people’s favourites.

However, the Ligue 1 champions almost missed out on qualification for the knock out stage.

PSG finished 15th in the 36-team group phase and were forced to take part in a play-off to ensure their progression to the round of 16.

They brushed aside Brest with ease, winning 10-0 on aggregate. However, despite their lowly league phase position, still saw themselves handed the advantage of playing their semi-final second leg against Arsenal at their home stadium of the Parc des Princes.

Currently, home advantage is decided by a random draw after the round of 16 due to UEFA’s preference for an ‘open draw’, meaning sides who performed better in the group stage may have to play at home during the quarter-final and semi-final first leg.

But this could be set to change.

Arsenal reportedly voiced their concerns, and according to German outlet BILD “UEFA is changing the format: Clubs that finished among the top eight teams in the league table after the league phase and thus qualified directly for the round of 16 will receive additional rewards in the future: they will generally play second legs of the knockout rounds against lower-ranked teams at home. This previously only applied to the round of 16”.

Final approval by the UEFA Executive Committee is considered a formality.

Despite boasting second-leg home advantage during their semi-final clash, PSG travelled to Liverpool’s Anfield and Aston Villa’s Villa Park for second legs en route to their maiden European triumph.

The 2025/26 Champions League group phase is set to get underway on September 16.

Boost for cocoa sector …President hints of processing factories for growing areas, good producer price for farmers

0

A BROADER government strategy to rejuvenate Ghana’s cocoa sector to increase the country’s production, and empower rural communities in the cocoa value chain is in the offing, President John Dramani Mahama has announced.

They include the addition of 200,000 hectares of cocoa farm, establishment of cocoa processing factories in cocoa growing areas and a significant increase in cocoa producer price.

Addressing the chiefs and people of the Ahafo Region at Goaso on Saturday, May 31 as part of his ‘Thank You’ visit to the area, President Mahama said discussions were ongoing between the COCOBOD and other stakeholders for the announcement of an improved cocoa producer price in August.

President John Mahama (second from right) arriving at the durbar grounds

“To cocoa farmers, the COCOBOD Chief Executive has informed me that in August, they will announce the new cocoa producer price and I can assure you, the price is going to be a very, very, very good price,” he assured.

The cocoa sector improvement programme forms part of a broader vision for the agriculture sector and the Bono East, Bono and Ahafo regions; a vision hinged on both human and infrastructure development.

According to the President, the three regions, carved out of the old Brong Ahafo Region in 2019, hold a major potential in the holistic development of the country and would be given the needed attention.

This assurance was contained in President Mahama’s remarks when he addressed separate durbars of chiefs and people of the three regions in Kintampo, Sunyani and Goaso on Thursday, Friday and Saturday respectively.

The government, President Mahama said, was deliberately working to revitalise the cocoa sector which he said has faced setbacks in recent years.

“Plans are underway to revamp the collapsed cocoa sector. Incentives will be provided to our hardworking farmers to increase cocoa production,” President Mahama assured.

“We aim to add 200,000 hectares of cocoa to Ghana’s output in order to increase the income of our farmers.”

In his view, this was the best time to be a cocoa farmer in particular and a farmer in general as government was taking steps to improve the lot of the Ghanaian farmer.

“So those of you who don’t have cocoa farms, go and start looking for land and start planting cocoa,” he urged.

In Kintampo, President Mahama announced plans to convert the Kintampo College of Health into the University of Health, Agriculture and Life Sciences dedicated to training healthcare professionals and conducting research in areas including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and public health.

Additionally, a technical university, he said, would be established in Techiman, the capital on Bono East, as part of a comprehensive plan to develop the human capital base of the region and the country at large.

President Mahama said his administration was of the conviction that technical education was essential for industrial growth to help bridge the skills gap while creating employment opportunities for the country’s teeming youth.

The government, having earmarked GH¢15 billion, and same approved by Parliament for road infrastructure under the “Big Push” initiative across the country, the President said roads including Asuoya-Beredan, Offuman-Wenchi, Sunyani-Nkoranza, Techiman-Wenchi, Atebubu-Kajaji, Kintampo-Prang, Ejura-Atebubu, and Busunya-Atebubu, all in the region were under consideration for construction.

In Sunyani on Friday, President Mahama announced ongoing discussions with private sector players to establish a cashew processing factory in the Bono Region to ensure value addition, create jobs, and strengthen the local economy.

The Bono Region, a major cashew-producing area, exports most of its nuts in raw form, missing out on the benefits of the full value chain and denies the vital revenue and job opportunities inherent in cashew value addition, a trend President Mahama said must be reversed.

In his remarks, President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, urged the government not to waver in holding individuals accountable for their stewardship, but same must be done in accordance with due process to ensure their rights were not violated.

Wontumi’s Lawyer Clears Air on Kennedy Agyapong’s Bail Offer, Calls Documents Fake

News Hub Creator15min

The legal team representing Chairman Wontumi has come forward to address the controversy surrounding the bail offer allegedly presented by Hon. Kennedy Agyapong. According to Wontumi’s lawyer, the documents provided by Agyapong as surety for the bail were either fake or invalid, raising serious concerns about the authenticity of the attempt to secure Wontumi’s release.

In a recent statement, Lawyer Appiah-Kubi clarified that while efforts were made to meet the bail conditions, the documents submitted by Kennedy Agyapong did not meet the required legal standards. He emphasized that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) could not accept the documents due to their questionable validity.

This revelation has sparked heated discussions among political analysts and supporters of both figures. Some argue that the situation exposes deeper tensions within the political landscape, while others believe it was an honest mistake that should not be blown out of proportion.

Meanwhile, former State Prosecutor Augustine Obour has weighed in on the matter, stating that Wontumi’s legal team should have pursued a court application to vary the bail terms instead of relying on external interventions. He explained that the law allows suspects to seek modifications to bail conditions through judicial processes rather than political maneuvering.

The controversy surrounding Wontumi’s bail has led to protests from supporters who believe the GH₵50 million bail condition imposed by EOCO is excessive and unfair. Minority MPs and NPP members have staged demonstrations, demanding a review of the bail conditions and Wontumi’s immediate release.

As the debate continues, many are watching closely to see how this situation unfolds. Will Wontumi’s legal team take further action to challenge the bail conditions, or will this controversy fade into the background of Ghana’s political discourse? Only time will tell.

The Only SHS In Ghana To Produce Most Presidents and Vice Presidents

Located in Accra and established in 1927, Achimota School holds a unique place in Ghana’s history. It was not only the first secondary school in the country to offer co-education but has also become the alma mater of some of the nation’s most influential political leaders.

To date, three of Ghana’s Presidents—Edward Akufo-Addo, Jerry John Rawlings, and John Evans Atta Mills—received their early education at Achimota. Each of these leaders played a significant role in shaping the country’s political path.

According to Ghanaweb, Edward Akufo-Addo was a key figure during the independence era and later served as the ceremonial president from 1970 to 1972. Jerry John Rawlings initially came to power through a military coup in 1979, led the country again from 1981, and transitioned into a democratically elected president in 1993. John Evans Atta Mills, who was Vice President under Rawlings, later won the presidency in 2008, serving until his death in 2012.

Interestingly, Mills stands out not only as a President but also as a former Vice President—making Achimota School the only senior high school in Ghana that has produced both a President and a Vice President.

Other notable schools have also contributed to Ghana’s leadership roster. Mfantsipim School counts among its alumni two Vice Presidents: Ekow Nkensen Arkaah and Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur. Tamale Secondary School (Tabasco) is known for producing Vice Presidents Aliu Mahama and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Ghana Secondary School in Tamale was attended by John Dramani Mahama, who rose to the Presidency after serving as Vice President. Additionally, Wesley Girls’ High School in Cape Coast boasts Ghana’s first female Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, appointed in 2025.

Despite the significant contributions of these institutions, Achimota School maintains a singular status. Its record of producing multiple presidents and a vice president is unmatched, a reflection of its long-standing legacy of excellence in leadership development. The school’s motto, “That They All May Be One,” continues to guide its mission of nurturing unity, discipline, and visionary leadership.

Achimota School’s impact on Ghana’s political history is not just a point of pride for the institution, but also a reminder of the power of education in shaping national destiny. As Ghana continues to grow, the achievements of its alumni from Achimota and other top schools remain a vital part of the country’s democratic and leadership journey.

Mahama promises to reshape major roads in Bono Region under “Big Push” initiative

0

President John Dramani Mahama has promised to reshape the deplorable condition of some critical roads in the Bono Region to spur rapid socio-economic growth and development.

He said the implementation of his government’s ambitious “Big Push” road infrastructure agenda would rehabilitate Sunyani Inner and Outer city ring roads, Catholic University Road, the Berekum-Sampa Road and the Sampa-Wenchi Road.

President Mahama said the programme would also capture and reshape Odomasi-Badu Road, Kyeremasu-Gambia Number One and Gambia Number Two road, as well as Sunyani-Techiman Road, and Sunyani-Kumasi highway.

The President gave the promise when he addressed a durbar of the chief and people of the Bono Region at the Sunyani Jubilee Park as part of his ‘Thank You Tour’ of the region.

President Mahama said funding for the implementation of the “Big Push” road infrastructure was ready, assuring that “funding will not be an excuse and contractors executing the projects will receive their money within two weeks” after they had raised their certificates.

He indicated that the Road Ministry had completed technical assessments, saying the first phase of the “Big Push” project would commence soon.

President Mahama said all the roads captured by the project would meet standards of durability, quality, and timely completion to saying reshaping those roads was significant to improve transportation, access healthcare delivery, as well as enhance agriculture, trade and commerce.

He said his government had plans to enhance sports development nationwide, saying regions which lacked modern sports infrastructure, including Bono and the six newly created regions, would all benefit from the construction of a ‘fit-for-purpose stadium’.

President Mahama said the Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang was also spearheading a market enhancement strategy to improve the nation’s market infrastructure development, saying under the strategy, five modern market centres would be constructed in strategic districts in the Bono Region, including Sunyani, the regional capital.

Those markets would be fully equipped with clean water and sanitation facilities, security, Daycare centres, and digital infrastructure to empower women traders and improve economic activities.

Cedi to gain as Ghana awaits $370m IMF tranche to boost reserves

0

The cedi is expected to maintain its relative stability in the coming weeks, buoyed by the anticipated release of $370 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) later this month.

The disbursement, which marks the fifth tranche under Ghana’s $3 billion Extended Credit Facility, is subject to the approval of the IMF Executive Board when it convenes on June 3.

This follows a successful fourth review of Ghana’s economic reform programme in April and would bring total disbursements received under the programme to $2.24 billion.

Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama, says the expected inflows alongside additional financing from the World Bank will help bolster the country’s foreign reserves, further anchor exchange rate stability and reinforce confidence in the broader economy.

“As you are aware, this money is released after [approval] by the IMF Board. We are expecting the $370m and not only that, the World Bank also stands to make some disbursement. So those monies will come in and certainly build our reserves further but that will be somewhere in June”, he said.

The IMF programme has been crucial in Ghana’s post-crisis economic recovery efforts.

It has provided both financial and technical support as the country implements fiscal consolidation, structural reforms and debt sustainability measures.

The projected inflows could provide short-term relief to foreign exchange pressures and help moderate imported inflation, particularly as the mid-year economic cycle begins.

Abronye drops another big bombshell

0

A new wave of controversy has gripped Ghana’s political and media landscape following explosive allegations made by Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye.

In a fiery interview aired on Wontumi TV, Abronye claimed that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) paid $50,000 to respected journalist Samson Lardy Anyenini in an alleged scheme to publicly embarrass Rev. Ntim Fordjour during a recent appearance on Joy News’ flagship political talk show, Newsfile.

According to Abronye, the payment was made just a day before the programme aired. He alleged that the entire segment featuring Fordjour—who previously served as Deputy Minister of Education—was a calculated attempt by the NDC to orchestrate a media ambush aimed at tarnishing his reputation.

“The NDC’s intention was not merely political theatre,” Abronye asserted. “They wanted to destroy the credibility of a rising NPP figure. This is part of their larger strategy to manipulate media spaces and mislead the public.”

The allegation has generated significant attention on social media and across political circles, with supporters and critics of both parties weighing in. However, neither Samson Lardy Anyenini nor Joy News has issued a public response to the claims. The NDC has also remained silent, offering no official comment on the matter as of press time.

Despite the sensational nature of the allegations, many observers have expressed skepticism. Prominent media analysts and press freedom advocates have dismissed Abronye’s comments as unverified and potentially harmful, warning against what they describe as a growing trend of politicized attacks on journalists.

“Allegations like these, when made without evidence, threaten the foundations of responsible journalism and democratic discourse,” said one media watchdog in Accra.

The incident adds fuel to an already tense political climate in Ghana, as parties gear up for upcoming electoral contests. Public calls for concrete evidence continue to grow, with many urging political actors to refrain from using unproven claims to undermine media credibility or distract from substantive national issues.

For now, the nation watches closely, awaiting responses from the key figures involved—and perhaps, further revelations in what is becoming yet another flashpoint in Ghana’s dynamic political arena.

Zoomlion secures Lagos contract, signs waste management MoUs with Congo and Ethiopia

0

The Lagos State Government has inked a groundbreaking Waste Management and Processing Concession Agreement with ZoomLion Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Ghana’s renowned Jospong Group of Companies (JGC).

This Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative aims to transform the state’s waste management landscape.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Executive Chairman of JGC, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, formalised the partnership at the State House in Alausa, Ikeja, Nigeria.

This collaboration will see the development of two pivotal facilities: a material recovery plant and a waste recycling plant.

These installations will be crucial in integrating Lagos into a modern and sustainable waste management framework. Lagos State currently generates approximately 13,000 tonnes of waste daily.

Key components of the agreement include the construction of Transfer Loading Stations (TLS) at the Olusosun Dumpsite in Ketu and Solous III Dumpsite in Igando.

These facilities will pave the way for the eventual closure and decommissioning of the dumpsites.

The TLS at Olusosun will divert 2,500 tonnes of waste daily to a new Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Ikorodu, while the TLS at Solous III will divert 1,500 tonnes daily to a new MRF in Badagry.

Additionally, self-tipping tricycles will be deployed to enhance waste collection in hard-to-reach areas across the metropolis. All projects are slated for completion within 18 months.

Governor Sanwo-Olu hailed the agreement as a “turning point” in the state’s waste management journey, emphasising that it would create over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs and enhance the operations of PSP waste operators.

“Today, we have witnessed the official commencement of a mutually beneficial relationship between a forward-looking private company and a committed public sector.

“This agreement will redefine how we manage, process, and recycle waste in Lagos. It’s not just a change in strategy but a complete transformation of our waste ecosystem,” he said.

This initiative, he stressed, would not result in job losses but rather create over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, offering dignified and sustainable employment opportunities.

He also underscored that the concession would enhance the operations of PSP waste operators, enabling quicker turnarounds in refuse collection.

“From food waste to plastics and glass, materials will now be recycled into reusable products. This opens the door to future opportunities in carbon credits, biodiversity, and biofuels. Waste will no longer be a burden but a resource,” Governor Sanwo-Olu added.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, described the project as a major milestone, marking the state’s transition to a circular waste economy.

“We can now begin to generate wealth from what we previously discarded. This project was thoroughly reviewed by the Executive Council and the House of Assembly before it was approved,” Wahab indicated.

The Executive Chairman of Jospong Group, Dr. Agyepong, highlighted the significance of intra-African partnerships for sustainable development, pledging that ZoomLion Nigeria Ltd. would deliver on all terms of the agreement within the stipulated timeframe.

This partnership is poised to redefine waste management in Lagos, turning waste into a valuable resource.

‘You’ve befriended Sahel state leaders and want to introduce lawlessness in Ghana’

0

Michael Okyere Baafi [L] and President John Mahama Michael Okyere Baafi [L] and President John Mahama

The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi has accused President John Dramani Mahama of being negatively influenced by his friendship with the three Sahelian presidents.

According to him, President Mahama’s association with the Presidents of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso has had a negative impact on him for which reason the parents must stand up and stop such occasions

“President John Dramani Mahama has now made friends with the Sahelian countries who are fond of coups. So they want to change Ghana’s constitution and introduce lawlessness. That is what has been visited on the people and we politicians have to fight it,” Okyere Baafi said in an interview with Movement TV as captured in a video shared on social media demanding the release of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NNPC, Chairman Wontumi.

Okyere Baafi criticised the Mahama led government for the GH₵50million bail imposed on Chairman Wontumi by the Economic and Organised Crime Office. (EOCO)

“We came in peace. Our issue is that if Chairman Wontumi has violated the law and he has been charged he should be sent to court. The bail condition must be reduced, Wontumi is a member of the NPP and he will not flee this country. You don’t need to create unnecessary tension and embarrassment for the government and the State. We are warning that if Chairman Wontumi is not released today, we will causes a lot of problems in this country.”

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail on Tuesday, May 27, requiring GH₵50 million with two justified sureties, following his arrest by EOCO on suspicions of fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes. Until Friday, his team had only secured one surety.

His legal team confirmed on Friday that they had fulfilled the GH₵50 million bail conditions set by EOCO.

However, his lawyer, Andrew Appiah-Kubi, revealed that despite meeting the bail conditions, Wontumi’s release has been stalled due to a fresh legal application filed earlier in the day.

“My client is not going home tonight. We encountered a challenge that needs to be addressed before we can move forward,” he explained.

“Unknown to me, an application was filed to frustrate what we are doing. We will deal with it on Monday. It is an application that was not filed by me, but it has prohibited his release,” Appiah-Kubi noted.

Citi News Explainer | Why exchange rates at banks and forex bureaux are higher than BoG’s

0

Ever wondered why you are paying more for forex than the rates the Bank of Ghana (BoG) publishes? The answer simply lies in how foreign exchange works in practice.

Per the Bank of Ghana’s official figures, the cedi closed trading last week at GH₵10.28 to the US dollar, GH₵13.86 to the British pound, and GH₵11.67 to the euro.

But for those who sourced foreign currency from retail channels like forex bureaux, it was costlier in that same period.

A dollar exchanged hands at GH₵10.80, while the pound and euro were going for GH₵14.60 and GH₵11.90, respectively – clearly above the BoG’s rates.

The difference is because foreign currency is treated like any tradable commodity and it’s subject to the forces of demand and supply in what’s known as the foreign exchange (FX) market.

This means, just like any other market, prices can vary depending on where, how and in what volumes the currency is being traded.

“An exchange rate is the price of one country’s currency in terms of another currency. Generally, there are two systems of quotation. We have a direct quote system and an indirect quote system”, Nelson Cudjoe Kuagbedzi, Finance and Tax Expert and Head of Finance at Merban (UMB) Capital Limited explains.

Ghana uses a direct quote system, where the exchange rate is expressed as the amount of Ghana cedis needed to buy one unit of foreign currency — for example, USD 1 = GHS 12.20 (buy) – GHS 12.50 (sell).

Under this system, banks buy low and sell high by adding their margins to cover operational costs and make a profit.

The buying rate are quoted for exporters while the selling rate are quoted for importers.

In contrast, an indirect quote system, used in some other countries, expresses the value of local currency per unit of foreign currency.

Why higher rates than BoG’s?

The Bank of Ghana sells foreign exchange in bulk to commercial banks, often at slightly lower rates due to the large volumes involved and pricing typically more competitive.

Conversely, forex bureaux deal with smaller volumes and higher transaction risks.

Since demand often outpaces supply, banks and forex bureaux, however, add a margin when they retail the FX to individuals and businesses – accounting for service costs, market risks and desired profit making prices higher.

There is also the interbank market, where banks trade FX among themselves.

These transactions are subject to real-time market dynamics; meaning rates fluctuate based on who needs foreign exchange and how urgently.

The BoG calculates and publishes the spot weighted median rate based on all interbank transactions at the end of trading each day.

This rate on the Central Bank’s website is meant to only serve as a benchmark – not a retail price and doesn’t include the markups added by banks or forex bureaus for smaller, retail-level transactions.

Put simply, the BoG’s published rate is a reference point, not a guaranteed retail price.

So, the final rate you get at the counter has been computed based on trading volumes, margins and real-time market pressures.

These are all factors that make buying foreign currency more expensive on the open market than it appears on paper.

Bleached Babies: The toxic beauty obsession endangering Ghana’s children

0

A joint investigation by JoyNews and Nigeria Health Watch has uncovered a disturbing public health crisis: parents in Ghana are bleaching the skin of their babies and children as young as three using toxic, banned substances.

In communities like Chorkor, a densely populated fishing enclave in Accra, skin tone is becoming a status symbol, and children are the latest victims. Mothers are applying creams containing dangerous ingredients like hydroquinone, mometasone, and tretinoin, all banned by Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA). Some even resort to household bleach—hypochlorite—commonly sold as Parazone.

Caro, a fishmonger and mother of two, says beauty in her community begins with lighter skin. She started bleaching her children when they were just three. “They were born dark. I didn’t like that,” she said. “Now their skin is lighter. That’s beauty.”

Caro uses a cream called Skin Light, one of the most popular on the market despite its banned ingredients. She knows it’s harmful. “Yes, it can cause kidney failure or skin cancer. But I’ve found my way around it,” she claims. The financial cost is high, but the social pressure is higher.

She is not alone.

Naa Ashorkor, another mother in Chorkor, says keeping children’s skin fair is a major priority for many parents. “Some use bleach found in detergents,” she confessed. “It’s what makes them look acceptable.” To them, light skin means beauty, class, and opportunity.

FDA’s Head of Cosmetics, Emmanuel Nkrumah, says the use of hypochlorite on human skin, especially children, is extremely dangerous. “It’s not designed for the skin. It’s toxic,” he warned.

The skin-lightening craze is not limited to topical creams. Some women are using intravenous methods—injecting bleaching agents directly into their bloodstream. These risky procedures are offered in unregulated beauty clinics across urban neighbourhoods, charging as much as GH¢1,500 per session.

Dr. Titus Beyuo, a gynaecologist and former Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, confirms a rise in mothers bleaching newborns. He says some do it to dispel suspicion about the baby’s paternity. “It’s happening more than we think,” he said.

In 2018, the FDA issued a public alert over the use of cosmetic pills by pregnant women aiming to lighten their unborn babies’ skin. Now, intravenous bleaching poses an even greater risk. “It affects every part of the body,” Dr. Beyuo warned.

Former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service and current Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr. Nsiah Asare, says this must stop. “Parents do not have the right to bleach their children. There are laws to protect children from harmful practices.”

Despite limited studies on child skin bleaching in Ghana, the World Health Organisation reports that over a third of Ghanaians tone their skin. The figures are even higher in other African countries: 77% in Nigeria, 25% in Mali.

In Chorkor, the trend is deeply entrenched. Even residents like Quaynor Allotey, whose sisters bleach their children, express alarm. Yet the practice continues, driven by societal ideals that associate fair skin with worth.

Behind every bottle of bleaching cream, every bar of whitening soap, lies a painful truth: children are being taught that their natural skin is not enough. The damage is not only physical—it’s psychological, generational, and cultural.

But this cycle can be broken.

The true beauty of Ghana lies not in the shade of one’s skin but in the resilience of its people and the richness of its heritage. We must say enough. We must protect our children.

Let this documentary be more than a report. Let it be a call to action—for education, for regulation, and a cultural awakening.

No child should ever feel they must change their skin to be loved, respected, or accepted. Let self-worth shine brighter than any cream ever could.

‘You’ve befriended Sahel states leaders and want to introduce lawlessness in Ghana’

Michael Otchere Baafi [L] and President John Mahama Michael Otchere Baafi [L] and President John Mahama

The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Otchere Baafi has accused President John Dramani Mahama of being negatively influenced by his friendship with the three Sahelian presidents.

That is what has been visited on the people and we politicians have to fight it,” Otchere Baafi said in an interview with Movement TV as captured in a video shared on social media demanding the release of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NNPC, Chairman Wontumi.

Otchere Baafi criticised the Mahama led government for the GH₵50million bail imposed on Chairman Wontumi by the Economic and Organised Crime Office.

5 armed robbers jailed 70 years

0

Five members of a robbery gang have been convicted at the Kwabenya Circuit Court for their roles in two violent robbery attacks in Accra earlier this year.

The total jail term handed to the gang was 70 years.

The convicts were Isaac Agbezudor, also known as “Money Man,” a 20-year-old mechanic who was sentenced to 10 years in prison on two counts, to run concurrently; Justice Akwasi Sarfo Oppong, known as “Gariba Manta” or “Demon,” a 19-year-old okada rider who received 15 years.

Bright Alikor, also called “Zaamani,” a 21-year-old driver’s mate who was jailed for 15 years; Emmanuel Nii Odartey Lamptey, known as “Chameleon,” aged 23, also jailed for 15 years; and Prince Owusu, called “Check Boy,” aged 19, who received 15 years as well.

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command confirmed that the convicted persons were responsible for a robbery at Jos Bakery at Dome and another at ACP Junction earlier this year.

Addressing the media in Accra, the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Duuti Tuaruka, said the first incident occurred on May 11, 2025, around 1:25 a.m., when two armed robbers stormed the Jos Bakery Head Office at Dome.

He revealed that the suspects, identified as Isaac Agbezudor and Manta arrived on an unregistered motorbike, fired a locally made pistol to scare the staff and stole a Tecno Pop 8 smartphone valued at GH¢1,500 and a handbag containing personal belongings.

DCOP Tuaruka stated that police launched investigations following the robbery, leading to the arrest of Agbezudor on May 14 in a covert operation.

He also disclosed that during interrogation, Agbezudor admitted to the crime and assisted the police in recovering crucial evidence, including the motorbike and the clothes they wore during the robbery, and named Gariba Manta as his partner.

DCOP Tuaruka said based on further intelligence, the police arrested Gariba Manta on May 22 at a mining site between Osino and Saaman.

Additionally, he underlined that Manta later led the police to a hideout at Sonitra at Amasaman, where the weapon and five live rounds of ammunition used in the bakery robbery were retrieved.

He said both Agbezudor and

Gariba Manta were prosecuted at the Kwabenya Circuit Court, saying that, “Agbezudor pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years in prison on two counts, to run concurrently. Gariba Manta was sentenced to 15 years in prison”.

DCOP Tuaruka pointed out that during the investigations, Gariba Manta was also linked to another robbery on February 5, 2025, near ACP Junction. In that incident, he and three others attacked a woman with a knife and scissors, stealing an iPhone 11 Pro Max, a Samsung tablet, and GH¢6,000 in cash.

The three other suspects involved in the ACP Junction robbery were later identified as Zaamani, Chameleon and Prince Check Boy who were all arrested through separate covert operations.

Moreover, DCOP Tuaruka praised the police teams involved in the arrests and called on the public to continue supporting the police with timely information. He assured all informants and residents that any information shared with the police would be treated confidentially, and their safety would be fully protected. He emphasised the need for community cooperation to improve safety in Accra and its surroundings.

Ghana’s mineral output set for strong growth in 2025 – Chamber of Mines

0

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has forecast a strong increase in mineral production for 2025, led by a projected gold output of between 4.4 million and 5.1 million ounces.

The outlook reflects continued performance from key producers—including Gold Fields’ Tarkwa and Damang mines, Zijin Mining’s Akyem mine, and Perseus Mining’s Edikan Mine—as well as new contributions from Newmont’s Ahafo North Mine and Shandong Gold’s Namdini Mine, both set to begin production next year.

Other minerals are also expected to post gains. Manganese output is projected to reach 8 million tonnes, while bauxite production could hit 2 million tonnes. Diamond production may rise to 400,000 carats, although potential declines in some areas could affect the final tally.

However, growth in the small-scale gold mining sector remains uncertain. Production from this segment is expected to range between 1.5 million and 2.0 million ounces, depending on the impact of policy changes and global gold prices.

A key development shaping the sector in 2025 is the government’s transformation of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) into the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod). The new agency, with expanded powers to set local gold prices, is expected to introduce pricing reforms that could have a significant effect particularly on the price-sensitive small-scale mining industry.

The Chamber noted that while the outlook is positive overall, success will hinge on stable policy implementation and favourable global market conditions.

DJ Mensah urges Ghanaian DJs to prioritise local music

0

Renowned Ghanaian disc jockey and founder of the DJ Mensah Foundation, Michael Mensah Ayenu, has called on fellow DJs in the country to actively promote Ghanaian music on the global stage.

Speaking on Upside Down on Channel One TV on Sunday, June 1, DJ Mensah emphasised the need for DJs to serve as key promoters of the local music industry, especially outside Ghana.

He noted a growing demand for Ghanaian music abroad, particularly in the UK. However, he expressed concern that Ghanaian DJs are not doing enough to satisfy this demand.

DJ Mensah stressed that the focus should shift from constant comparisons with other countries to building and promoting Ghana’s unique musical identity instead.

“I will just tell my DJs to push Ghana music more. People are waiting for Ghanaian music to play, especially in the UK. We still have the story.

“As much as we are smaller, and we are always comparing ourselves to the Nigerians, we are very strong with what we do. We know our stuff very well.

“We should stop looking at what other people are doing and focus on our own. Let us push our stuff,” he urged.

NDC will lose 2028 elections if Mahama fails to sign Anti LGBT+ bill

0

L-R Rev. Ntim Fordjour and John Mahama L-R Rev. Ntim Fordjour and John Mahama

The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend Ntim Fordjour, has stated emphatically that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) will suffer a humiliating defeat in the 2028 elections if President John Dramani Mahama fails to assent to the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill—commonly referred to as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

According to the reverend minister and politician, any president who treats the bill lightly—even if they are not seeking re-election—risks jeopardizing the electoral fortunes of their party.

Speaking in an interview with media personality Kafui Dey in a video shared on YouTube, Reverend Ntim Fordjour, one of the eight parliamentarians who initially sponsored the bill, emphasized that LGBTQ+ issues are a significant influence on political behavior in Ghana and other countries. For this reason, he argued, the bill should not be taken lightly.

He stressed that the NDC would be making a grave political miscalculation if President Mahama fails to sign the bill into law, especially after having publicly expressed his disapproval of LGBTQ+ activities.

“If he doesn’t sign it, it will be the Ghanaian people who show him the red card and register their disagreement. Any president who jokes with this bill—even if you’re not running again—jeopardizes the fortunes of your own party because it is such a politically sensitive issue. The 6.3 million votes the NDC secured—93% of that support—could turn into anger if this bill is mishandled. That is what the 2021 CDD Afrobarometer survey reflects,” he said.

“So if you’re a political figure and your personal ambitions are not your priority, think about the fortunes of your party and handle this bill wisely. If President Mahama does not sign the bill, the NDC will lose miserably in 2028. Any credible political poll will likely support the CDD’s position in the 2021 Afrobarometer survey. LGBTQ+ issues play a significant role in shaping political behavior—not just in Ghana but in many other countries. That is why any president who cares about their party’s future cannot afford to joke with this bill,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has announced that the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill is set to be reintroduced for its first reading during the second meeting of the Ninth Parliament.

The proposed legislation seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, as well as the promotion, advocacy, or funding of such activities.

Bagbin made the announcement during his opening remarks to mark the official commencement of Parliament’s second meeting.

“Three private members’ bills—the Property Rights of Spouses Bill 2025, the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana Amendment Bill 2025, and the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2025—have completed the required processes under the Standing Orders and are expected to be presented for a first reading during this meeting,” he stated.

The bill, which has generated intense national and international debate, was previously passed by the Eighth Parliament. However, it failed to receive presidential assent under former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration and therefore did not become law.

With its reintroduction, the bill is expected to spark renewed discussions on human rights, constitutional freedoms, and Ghana’s cultural values. Parliament is now poised to begin deliberations on what remains one of the most polarizing pieces of legislation in the country’s recent history.

GoldBod can stabilise cedi if we get it right, says Association of Banks CEO, John Awuah

0

The CEO of the Ghana Association of Banks, John Awuah, says the effective implementation of the new Ghana GoldBod has the potential to help stabilise the local currency.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition on last Thursday, he said Ghana is losing billions of dollars in unaccounted gold exports every year.

He believes plugging those leaks through a disciplined and transparent GoldBod regime could be a game-changer for the Cedi.

“There are things that are happening now, which, in my view, if we continue to forcefully implement what we say we are going to do, will help us to better manage the currency,” he said.

He cited a shocking example from recent years.

“We were in this country when Dubai said they had imported $6 billion worth of gold from Ghana. But we had in our books, exported $2 billion. So that $4 billion difference, where was it?”

Mr. Awuah said foreign nationals often buy gold directly from mining communities, bypassing official channels.

Even with licensed small-scale miners, oversight is weak.

“How they get this gold outside of the country, nobody knows,” he said. “How can we have an export of $2 billion and the country we exported to say we imported $6 billion?”

He stressed that the missing $4 billion should have come in as export proceeds. That money could have helped strengthen the cedi.

“If we have a grip on it—what the GoldBod says they will do—if we have a grip and we do not make it like one of the other state institutions that sometimes you don’t know what happens and then things mess up… that’s potentially a lot,” he said.

“Hundreds of millions of dollars that hitherto would have left this country.”

Mr. Awuah said some transactions happen offshore.

“People manage to get Cedis in Ghana, but the dollars never arrive. Then they go back to the fold of our cities, buy our gold, they export, and about 10 to 15% of the proceeds come back just to help them do a few things. And the rest? We lose complete control over.”

He warned that without strong systems, the GoldBod will fail to deliver results. “It’s a big if,” he said.

“If we run this transparently, professionally, and we can aggregate this gold purchase program from the small-scale miners… as a country, we buy in Cedis and we sell… foreign currency comes to the country.”

For Mr. Awuah, that’s the real promise of the GoldBod. But only if it’s done right.

GCAA, Ghana Airports extend operational hours at Kumasi and Tamale Airports

0

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) have announced the extension of operational hours at two major domestic airports—Prempeh I International Airport (PIA) in Kumasi and Tamale International Airport (TIA).

The extension takes effect from Saturday, June 1, 2025.

According to a joint public notice issued by the two aviation bodies, Prempeh I International Airport will now operate until 11:00 p.m., with extended hours running from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m, while Tamale International Airport will also see an extension from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The GCAA has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) to notify all airlines of the changes. Domestic airlines have also been encouraged to increase the frequency of their operations to and from both airports.

The general public is advised to take note of the revised operational hours and make the necessary adjustments when planning travel.

This initiative forms part of broader efforts to enhance air travel convenience and connectivity across Ghana, especially in the northern and Ashanti regions.
