A group of landowners from nine communities within the Ejisu Municipality, have formally petitioned His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, expressing deep concerns over what they describe as deliberate misinformation surrounding a disputed 1,950-acre parcel of land.
The petitioners, who hail from Asarpong, Abenase, Ampabame, Ejisu-Manhyia, Hwereso, and Adadientem, Nyinatase, Donald and Aduapokyere, stated that they have never received any compensation from the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) for the said land, despite claims made by certain traditional leaders before the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace.
In their petition dated April 1, 2025, the landowners expressed profound appreciation to the Asantehene for boldly affirming the truth during a previous engagement—that no financial transaction had ever occurred between the GFZA and the landowners.
“We are grateful to Asantehene for courageously stating the truth—that we (petitioners) have not benefited from any sale of our lands to the GFZA,” the petition read.
The landowners accused some unnamed chiefs of allegedly misleading the Manhyia Traditional Council by falsely claiming that payments had been made, and that the lands were available for government development. According to them, those chiefs acted in bad faith, having already sold parts of the land without the knowledge or consent of the rightful owners.
Recounting the timeline of events, the petitioners explained that the GFZA approached them in 2004 to acquire the land but failed to return or finalise the process. After more than two decades of silence, the petitioners resumed full control and began developing or legally transferring the land to others, many of whom have since built permanent homes and businesses.
“There are no longer any lands available for the Ghana Free Zones Authority. We have developed our lands or lawfully handed them over to others who have built permanent homes,” the petitioners emphasised.
Speaking to the media, the leader of the group, Isaac Opoku, said the prolonged inaction by the GFZA compelled them to sell the land to private developers.
“For over 25 years now, GFZA has not compensated us. Therefore, we have also sold the lands to private developers. People have built their homes on the lands,” he stated.
Some of the landowners appealed to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for forgiveness over their decision to sell the land, acknowledging that while it was a difficult step, it became necessary after years of frustration and neglect.
The petition not only seeks to clarify the true history behind the land transaction but also serves as a formal notice to the Manhyia Traditional Council that any future claim by the GFZA would be untenable.
This latest development sheds light on the complex tensions between traditional leadership, state agencies, and local landowners in the Ashanti Region, especially regarding land acquisition, delayed government projects, and accountability.
A poll by Global InfoAnalytics has shown that majority of Ghanaians support the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
The survey, conducted between April 7 and April 16, 2025, sampled 2,545 voters across all 16 regions of Ghana.
The findings show that 52% of voters support the Chief Justice’s removal, while 20% oppose it. Additionally, 18% of respondents were neutral, and 10% expressed no opinion.
When those who opposed, were neutral, or had no opinion were asked if they would support the removal if evidence of legal misconduct emerged, 30% indicated they would support it, while 35% remained opposed, 19% stayed neutral, and 16% still had no opinion.
The poll also highlighted regional variations in voter sentiment. In the Greater Accra Region, 58% of respondents supported the Chief Justice’s removal, compared to 16% who opposed it. In the Central Region, 51% supported the move, while 16% opposed it. However, the Ahafo and Upper East regions were exceptions, where support for removal was not the majority view.
Educational background also played a role in shaping opinions. Among respondents with junior high school (JHS) education, 57% supported the removal, compared to 17% who opposed it. For those with senior high school (SHS) education, 50% supported the move, while 21% opposed it. Among tertiary-educated respondents, 54% supported the removal, and 18% opposed it. Even among those without formal education, 37% supported the removal, while 30% opposed it.
Political affiliations further influenced voter opinions. Among those who voted for John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 election, 79% supported the Chief Justice’s removal, while only 4% opposed it.
Conversely, among voters who supported Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, 17% backed the removal, while 47% opposed it. For voters who supported other candidates, 38% were in favor, 19% opposed, and 23% were neutral.
The poll underscores the complex dynamics of public opinion surrounding the Chief Justice’s role and highlights the influence of regional, educational, and political factors on voter sentiment. It remains to be seen how these findings will shape the national discourse on judicial leadership in Ghana.

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, questioned the effectiveness of the selection process for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
Commenting on the issue on Metro TV, Kwesi Pratt said he was completely shocked by the mayor’s public display of lawlessness.
“For me, the most important question is; how did such a person get appointed as the Metropolitan Chief Executive for Kumasi? How did he get appointed, and who interviewed him? That is the critical question for me. From the way he is talking, if you sit down with him for five minutes, it should be possible to discern what his orientation is. But he was interviewed, he went through the system, and got approval to become the Metropolitan Chief Executive of one of the biggest cities in Ghana.
“This is the shock. The shock is not so much about what he said, but how he got to that position. Something is seriously wrong with the system of appointment. I am completely scandalised by the kind of statements he is making. I think I would be even more scandalised if, after this display, he is still at post. If, after this display, he is still at post, it would be a huge statement about the appointing authorities and those who choose to leave him there. This would not be tolerated anywhere,” Pratt stated.

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Akosua Manu, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to sack the mayor due to what she termed as threats of physical assault on traders.
In an interview on ChannelOne News and monitored by GhanaWeb on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the 2024 NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the Adentan Constituency stated that physical assault must be condemned, as it departs from acceptable standards of governance.
“What I do not understand is that somebody put into a leadership role can’t stand in front of people to warn or to threaten them of physical assault.
“He assumed a position in two weeks, truth be told, he should have been the shortest-serving appointee in this government. Upon hearing that he had repeated physical assault as a likely punishment to deter hawkers, the president should have called the Chief of Staff to withdraw him immediately,” she noted.
Amnesty International boss
The Board Chairman of Amnesty International Ghana, Francis Nyantakyi, has also criticised Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi for his apparent disregard for the rule of law.
Reacting to the mayor’s comments in an interview with Joy FM, and monitored by GhanaWeb, he stated that the mayor has no place in Ghana’s governance if he does not uphold the rule of law.
“We need to analyse and find ways to support these men and women to do their business legitimately without endangering their lives, not to threaten them.
“The most unfortunate part of this situation is that the Mayor seems not to believe in the rule of law. And anyone who does not believe in the rule of law has no business in the governance of our country,” he said.
He added, “For heaven’s sake, Ghana is a democratic country. We believe in the protection of human rights, enshrined in Chapter Five of the Constitution. So, for a mayor to say he doesn’t trust the police and will instead put his own men in the back of a pickup truck to assault people — I mean, it is very unfortunate,” Nyantakyi said.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Kofi Armah-Buah, has explained the government’s decision to reject the renewal of Gold Fields’ mining lease for the Damang Mine.

The company’s current lease is set to expire on April 18, 2025.
Speaking at a press conference on April 16, 2025, the minister said, “Gold Fields has failed to allocate any budget for exploration at Damang for the past two years. In essence, the company was not prepared, as required by law, to expend resources on exploration activities to discover new ore bodies or convert existing mineral resources into mineral reserves to support a mining program or operation.
“This lack of investment raises serious concerns about the company’s commitment to sustainable mining practices and the long-term viability of this particular mine,” he stated.

Al-Shabab has in recent months regrouped and launched a series of counter-attacks
The US and Somalia have carried out an airstrike against Islamist militants during a battle for control of a strategic central town, the government says.
The “well-coordinated” strike on Adan Yabaal, north of the capital Mogadishu, came hours after al-Shabab raided the town which is used as a key launchpad for military operations.
Among the 12 militants killed in the airstrike were several senior fighters from the al-Qaeda-linked group, the Somali information ministry said in a statement on X.
The latest fighting comes amid fears of a jihadist resurgence in Somalia after growing militant attacks, including one that targeted President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s convoy last month.
Al-Shabab, which controls large parts of southern and central Somalia, has been fighting the government for nearly 20 years. It seeks to overthrow the federal government and establish an Islamist state.
The African Union-led peacekeeping force helped push the jihadists onto the defensive in 2022 and 2023, but the group remains a big threat despite numerous military operations against it.
The Somali government insists the group has been weakened.
The airstrike late on Wednesday by Somali armed forces and the US Africa Command (Africom) “aimed to neutralize the threat posed” by militants, the information ministry said.
“The targeted strike hit a site used by the militants as a gathering and hideout,” it said, adding: “Importantly there were no civilian casualties.”
Adan Yabaal, in the Middle Shabelle region, was seized by al-Shabab in 2016 before being recaptured by government forces in 2022.
Heavy fighting broke out early on Wednesday after al-Shabab fighters raided the town, using heavy explosives.
Later the group said it had captured the town. Two local residents told AFP news agency that militants had taken control of Adan Yabaal.
The government did not say who was currently in control of the town.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited the town last month and met military commanders, underscoring its strategic significance in the fight against the militants.
In a separate incident, the national army said it killed at least 35 fighters near the city of Baidoa on Thursday, after they attempted to attack an army base there, the ministry said.
President Mohamud has downplayed the al-Shabab advances, saying that occasional battlefield setbacks were inevitable. He has maintained that his government was determined to defeat the militants.
The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced that the National Sanitation Day (NSD) has been rescheduled from April 5 to Saturday, May 3, 2025.
Ibrahim explained that the clean-up exercise will be approached as an emergency operation, with strong backing from environmental service providers and the government to ensure full nationwide involvement.
“The National Sanitation Day on May 3 is going to be an emergency evacuation where all environmental service providers are going to be onboard. They are going to bring their logistics, the government is going to partner with them.
“We are all going to clean, desilt all our gutters, send all the plastic waste to the recycling plant, and then the organic waste to wherever we have to send them. Thankfully, the patronage is being appreciated—people want to come onboard,” he stated.
Ibrahim revealed this to the media on the sidelines of an engagement with key leaders of major Christian religious institutions, including the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG), the Presbyterian Church of Ghana Headquarters, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Greater Accra region on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
The meeting formed part of broader consultations with faith-based organizations aimed at galvanizing national support and fostering community participation for the success of the National Sanitation Day initiative.
Ibrahim said the government was working on long-term measures to encourage waste segregation and responsible disposal among citizens. According to him, this will help prevent the spread of diseases like cholera, which still affect some areas.
As part of the sanitation effort, some recycling equipment has been acquired to help manage plastic waste and improve hygiene across the country.
“While a ban on plastics may not be immediately feasible, our primary strategy is to promote recycling. With recycling plants already established in the country, the focus now is on public education and waste segregation,” he said.
Ibrahim also called on Christian leaders to use their platforms, especially during the Easter period, to encourage a national culture of cleanliness and sanitation.

A former stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Richard Amoako Baah, has claimed that he often experienced spiritual attacks anytime he spoke about former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, he revealed that these challenges frequently arose, particularly after he criticised Akufo-Addo.
He alleged that these attacks occasionally manifested physically.
“I am speaking my truth. You will be stabbed in the side spiritually,” he claimed.
Aside from these spiritual attacks, the political scientist also alleged that some Kumasi-based radio stations were paid to blacklist him, even though his interviews boosted their audience ratings.
“The stations knew they got a bigger audience through my interviews, so sometimes they would call me and allow me to speak for only five minutes. A producer might want me to speak, but because the presenter has been paid, he will decline it. A lot of things have happened, and in due course, I will talk about them,” he stated.
Dr. Baah further mentioned experiencing occultic attacks but emphasized that he has endured them, affirming that he is a man of God with a divine purpose to fulfill on earth.
These revelations come barely 24 hours after he announced his resignation from the NPP, citing deep-seated frustrations with the party’s leadership and its failure to connect with ordinary supporters.
Dr. Baah has also hinted at the formation of a new party, the New Patriotic Front (NPF), which he claims already has the backing of about 36 NPP stalwarts.
President John Mahama has extended another invitation to the military leaders of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to attend the upcoming ECOWAS summit in Accra, for crucial Summit heralding the 50th Anniversary of ECOWAS
The invitation comes despite the three Sahel nations formally cutting ties with ECOWAS earlier this year and forming their own Alliance of Sahel States (AES). Their withdrawal has raised concerns about trade disruptions and regional cooperation, particularly for Ghana and its neighbours.
Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, explained that the invitation was made directly by President Mahama in his capacity as summit host.
“I did indicate all ECOWAS heads of state have been invited for this event, including heads of state of the AES countries,” Mr Ablakwa stated at the launch of the anniversary celebrations. “Because of the divorce from ECOWAS, it requires the host president to be solely responsible for that invitation. So they will come as guests of the Ghanaian president.”
He added that President Mahama’s move is a step towards rebuilding ties between ECOWAS and the breakaway countries.
“In the spirit of goodwill and seeking to foster reunification… when President Mahama discussed with his colleagues that he wanted to invite the AES heads of state, he did not face any opposition or resistance. That is really a good sign that there is genuine commitment and desire for ECOWAS to be fully reintegrated.”
Mr Ablakwa also revealed that President Mahama had briefed the ECOWAS Chair, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, on his engagements with the military governments.
“President Tinubu has said that at the next ECOWAS heads of state summit, President Mahama will be given the floor to present a detailed report of his engagements,” he said.
Meanwhile, questions have emerged over the continued involvement of the Sahelian leaders in ECOWAS matters, given their official exit. Fatau Musa, an ECOWAS expert, offered context to the long-standing challenges.
“Up until they left, they were participating in the Accra Initiative. ECOWAS always invited them to this meeting. Since about 2007, the Sahelian countries have been very reticent in collaboration with the rest of the region,” he said.
He explained that ECOWAS had previously attempted to build a Sahel strategy but met strong opposition from countries like Algeria.
“When the G5 Sahel was created, applications by other ECOWAS members to join were rebuffed. So the trajectory that the AES has taken is not very surprising,” he noted.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) underscores that greenhouse gas emissions must be rapidly reduced by 43% by 2030, while achieving net-zero Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) emissions globally by the early 2050s. Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) reports that approximately one million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction, many within decades, due to human activities.
The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2024 also identifies extreme weather events, critical changes to Earth’s systems, and biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse as the top three most severe risks over the next decade.
Addressing these interconnected crises requires immediate and coordinated global action to reduce emissions, protect biodiversity, and implement sustainable practices that safeguard the planet for future generations.
Integrated spatial planning can support national and subnational governments in identifying where to protect, restore, and sustainably manage nature to address the interconnected challenges. This was recognized in the adoption, in December 2022, of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) during the 15th Conference of Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP) – particular in its targets 1, 2 and 3.
The inception workshop for the year-long project, “Using UN Biodiversity Lab (UNBL) to Support GBF Mapping in Ghana”, was held on Thursday, March 27, 2025. The project is designed to support Ghana’s efforts to enhance the use of spatial data analysis and undertake biodiversity mapping to support the implementation of the KMGBF.
Funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, this project builds on previous collaborations under the Nature Transition Support Program (NTSP) and aims to equip Ghana with innovative spatial planning tools to advance sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.
Ghana will play a key role in co-developing new features for the UN Biodiversity Lab (UNBL), which will support national efforts to monitor, plan, and report on biodiversity-related commitments.
“The workshop comes at a timely moment, where the use of spatial data in policy planning is extremely important. Specifically, incorporating spatial data into the development of Ghana’s National Biodiversity Strategic Action Plan, will lead to the development of a more comprehensive plan that is easy to implement, monitor and evaluate”, Emelyne Wright-Hanson, Principal Development Planning Officer and Head of Biodiversity Unit at MEST, highlighted.
The project presents an opportunity for Ghana, as well as six other countries (Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, South Africa, and Sri Lanka) to better integrate spatial data into the policy making process towards the setting and achievement of the country’s National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs).
This important work occurs at a crucial moment when countries are updating their NBSAP and required to submit their 7th National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) by the end of February 2026, in accordance with CBD COP decision 15/6.
In his remarks, the Environment and Climate Cluster lead at UNDP Ghana country office, Dr. Abdul-Razak Saeed emphasized the importance of collective action in safeguarding Ghana’s biodiversity, he noted, “This launch signifies collective commitment to leveraging technology and spatial data to safeguard biodiversity and promote sustainable development.
We urge all stakeholders to seize this opportunity to work together, share knowledge, and drive impactful change in Ghana’s biodiversity landscape. Together, we can harness the power of spatial data to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for all”.
As we embark on this ground-breaking project, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting Ghana’s rich biodiversity and promoting sustainable development. We believe that by harnessing the power of innovative technology and spatial data, we can create a better future for all Ghanaians and contribute to the global effort to address the interconnected crises of climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss.
Unconfirmed reports on social media indicate that President John Dramani Mahama has suspended the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
If the reports are true, it would mean the President, with the advice of the Council of State, has concluded that there is a case for the removal of Justice Torkornoo based on a petition submitted by renowned US-based Ghanaian academic, Stephen Kwaku Asare, also known as Kwaku Azar.
Although the details of Azar’s current petition are unknown, a similar petition he submitted to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2024, which was dismissed, accused the Chief Justice of interfering in cases by reconstituting the panel of judges presiding over them.
According to Azar, the Constitution clearly states that no person, including the President, Parliament, or the Chief Justice, shall interfere with judges, judicial officers, or others exercising judicial power in the performance of their duties (Article 172(2)).
He contends that reconstituting panels under the guise of administrative power is a glaring abuse of office and a fundamental misunderstanding of the Chief Justice’s administrative boundaries.
This abuse, in his view, constitutes stated misbehaviour and warrants removal.
Cases highlighted in the petition:
1. Transfer of judge in the Opuni trial
Azar cited the trial of former COCOBOD CEO, Dr. Stephen Opuni (The Republic v. Stephen Kwabena Opuni, Seidu Agongo, Agricult Ghana Ltd), as a clear example of the Chief Justice abusing her administrative powers.
He alleges that she reconstituted a Supreme Court panel already seized of the matter.
Justice Honyenuga, who originally presided over the trial, retired. The case was reassigned to Justice Kwasi Anokye Gyimah, who ruled on April 4, 2023, that the trial should start afresh (de novo), taking into account witness demeanour and fairness concerns raised by the defence. This approach is standard in criminal trials.
However, the Attorney General appealed this ruling. On July 3, 2023, the Court of Appeal ruled that the High Court should adopt the previous proceedings, calling the decision to restart the case a misdirection.
Subsequently, the Chief Justice transferred Justice Anokye Gyimah to Kumasi and appointed Justice Aboagye Tandoh from Winneba to take over.
No explanation was given for this transfer, sparking public suspicion that it was politically motivated.
2. Reconstitution of panel in Dr Opuni’s appeal
Dr Opuni’s legal team, led by lawyer Samuel Codjoe, filed an interlocutory appeal at the Supreme Court on July 7, 2023, challenging the Court of Appeal’s decision. A hearing began on January 17, 2024, with a five-member panel.
However, on May 8, 2024, the Chief Justice controversially reconstituted the panel, retaining only two of the original members and presiding over the new panel herself. Codjoe objected, citing Article 157(3) of the Constitution, which prohibits a judge or panel from withdrawing after hearing arguments.
Despite the objection, the reconstituted panel dismissed the appeal on June 19, 2024, upholding the Court of Appeal’s ruling.
Critics argued that the Chief Justice had no administrative authority to reconstitute the panel without justification, suggesting a usurpation of judicial power.
3. The Ablakwa case
On June 25, 2024, lawyers for the MP for North Tongu objected to a reconstituted Court of Appeal panel. They noted that the original panel, Justices Senyo Dzamefe (Presiding), Alia Serwaa Asare-Botwe, and Archer, had been replaced by Justices Pamela Koranteng (Presiding) and Kweku Ackaah Boafo, with only Asare-Botwe remaining.
The objection was dismissed, but later evidence revealed that Justice Dzamefe had been directed to return the docket to the Chief Justice.
He is expected to be subpoenaed to testify.
4. Republic v. Elisha Mahama & two others
On May 22, 2024, during proceedings in the Wa High Court, it was announced that the Chief Justice had directed that, following the committal proceedings in Wa, all further proceedings be transferred to Kumasi.
This decision drew widespread criticism from the Upper West Region, given that the crime took place in Wa, and most witnesses and the prosecution resided there.
Although the Chief Justice eventually reversed the decision, the original directive was seen as arbitrary and unreasonable.
5. Vacant seat case
The Chief Justice also came under fire for her handling of a case filed by the MP for Effutu, challenging the declaration of four vacant parliamentary seats by Speaker Alban Bagbin.
Critics questioned the speed with which the case was heard and accused her of prioritising a case aligned with the then-ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
She was also criticised for declaring that Ghana was in a constitutional crisis due to Parliament not sitting.
Speaker Bagbin refuted this, stating: “There is no constitutional crisis.”
He explained that Parliament had been adjourned sine die to allow leadership to resolve the impasse surrounding the seats.

The lease of Gold Fields’ Damang Mine has sparked widespread discussion this week following the government’s decision not to renew it upon its expiration on April 18, 2025.
Industry stakeholders have expressed concerns, citing potential negative impacts on investor confidence and possible job losses for mine workers.
However, the government has clarified that the company failed to meet the legal requirements necessary for a lease renewal.
In this article, GhanaWeb Business explores the legal framework governing mining lease renewals in Ghana.
According to Section 44 of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), a holder of a mining lease may, at any time, but not later than three months before the lease’s expiration (or within a shorter period permitted by the Minister), apply in the prescribed form for an extension of the lease for up to 30 years. The application may cover all or any of the contiguous blocks and minerals under the original lease.
Additionally, the application must be accompanied by a proposed program of mineral operations.
The Act further states that if the holder has materially complied with the obligations imposed by the Act, including those relating to the lease’s operation and conditions, the Minister shall grant the extension, with conditions specified in writing.
Moreover, the law provides that:
“Where the holder has made an application for an extension of the term of the lease, and the term of the lease would, but for this subsection, expire, the lease shall continue in force in respect of the land the subject of the application until the application is determined.”
In case of a disagreement between the Minister and the leaseholder, Section 27 outlines the procedure for resolving disputes.
The government maintains that Gold Fields failed to meet some of these legal requirements, which led to the rejection of the renewal application. It has also announced plans for the state to assume control of the mine’s operations.

wo Tanzanian secondary school students have drawn national attention after unveiling a prototype ballot-counting machine aimed at simplifying and speeding up the vote-tallying process.
The young innovators Thuraiya Makame from Mpapa Secondary School in Zanzibar and Jorim Buntu from Kibasila Secondary School in Dar es Salaam unveiled their invention on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, during the closing ceremony of the 2025 ICT Training for Girls in Arusha.
Organised by the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF) in collaboration with the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), the training programme aims to nurture future female leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Though the vote-counting machine is still in its early stages and not yet suitable for national or local elections, the students say the innovation demonstrates what is possible when young people—particularly girls—are equipped with digital skills and support.
“We know how long it takes to count votes. People often grow anxious waiting for results. This device is our solution to that problem,” said Jorim.
“We hope the government and other institutions can support us in improving it. Even if it’s not yet ready for big elections, it could be used in school elections or upgraded for future national use.”
Her teammate Thuraiya echoed the call, urging more investment in ICT training for girls across the country.
“Girls should not fear ICT subjects. With the right tools and support, we can use technology to solve problems in our communities and the country at large,” she said.
Minister Calls for Equal Opportunities in Tech
Speaking at the event, Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Jerry Silaa, praised the girls’ innovation and emphasised the importance of closing the gender gap in the technology sector.
“Studies show that fewer girls choose ICT-related subjects, and this weakens our national workforce. The government is determined to change that,” he said.
Minister Silaa noted that the government is investing in restoring quality education in public schools and improving ICT infrastructure to create equal opportunities for both students and teachers.
“To those who presented innovations today—you’ve shown courage and creativity. I urge you to keep going. Let other girls see you and realise that no dream is out of reach. The government stands behind you.”
Over 1,400 Girls trained since 2016
According to UCSAF Executive Director Engineer Peter Mwasalyanda, this year’s programme involved 31 girls from across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, ahead of the upcoming International Girls in ICT Day on April 24, 2025.
“So far, we’ve trained over 1,400 girls since 2016, and this year alone, 246 students have benefited from our training at six centres located in Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Mbeya, Mwanza, and Zanzibar,” he said.
The goal, he added, is to inspire more girls to pursue careers in ICT and STEM fields and close the gender gap in technology.
COSTECH Pledges Support for Girls’ Innovations
Dr Athuman Mgumia, speaking on behalf of COSTECH, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to supporting innovations developed by youth—especially girls.
“Our role is to create enabling environments for innovation to thrive. These students have shown great potential, and we want them to continue developing their ideas. We are ready to support them to ensure their innovations are refined, recognised, and applied in real-world settings,” he said.
The invention of the vote-counting machine by these two students not only highlights the potential of young Tanzanians in the digital space but also underscores the importance of targeted training and mentorship in nurturing future tech leaders.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has donated 1,000 packs of bottled water and an undisclosed amount of money to the Christian Council of Ghana in support of its Easter celebration activities.
The donation, made on Tuesday, is aimed at assisting the Council’s events during Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Monday, including church conventions, community picnics, and other spiritual gatherings.
Speaking during the presentation, Mr. Boamah said the gesture was inspired by the spirit of giving and sharing that characterises the Holy Week.
“So I decided to come and donate 1,000 boxes of water and a modest token to support the World Ecclesiastical System,” he noted, expressing his commitment to promoting religious unity and faith-based support.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the Council, Rt. Rev. Dr. Hilliard Dela Dogbe, Chairman of the Christian Council, expressed deep appreciation for the MP’s generosity, describing it as both timely and meaningful.

The funeral of Abisola Kola-Daisi, daughter of former Oyo state gov, late Abiola Ajimobi, is currently holding at RCCG, City of David Parish, in Lagos.
Abisola, who was the eldest child of the late governor, passed away on March 27 in the UK after battling with cancer. She is survived by her husband, three children, her mum and siblings.
She was 44 years old.

Hohoe (V/R), April 17, GNA – The Hohoe Ghana Presby School, has emerged winners of the Lead Connect Global quiz competition held in Hohoe in the Volta Region.
The school topped six other contesting schools with 87 points in the keen competition dubbed “Bright Yao Afeku’s maiden edition”.
Fodome Woe/Agbetsido M.A. Basic School came second with 85 points, Gbi-Atabu, third with 77 points, followed by Alavanyo Agorme E.P. Primary School with 76 points, Holy Rosary R.C. Primary School with 73 points, St Francis Demonstration Primary School had 63 and Gbledi Gborgame R.C. Primary School had 62 points.
Mr Bright Yao Afeku, Chairman of Board of Directors, Lead Connect Global and CEO of Bright Wondowtech Limited, noted that education was the bedrock of development in every country, and at Lead Connect Global, they believed that empowering young minds was a responsibility and a necessity for societal transformation.

President John Dramani Mahama, has extended an invitation to the military juntas in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to attend the official launch of 50 years of ECOWAS’s establishment in Accra.
Addressing the press on Thursday, April 17, 2025, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, stated that the invitation to the Heads of State from the Sahel bloc is a step towards building bridges and collaborating to strengthen the West African sub‑region.
Ghana will host the official launch of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on April 22, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre.
The event marks a significant milestone for the West African regional bloc, which was founded on May 28, 1975.
Ghana’s selection as host is being hailed as a well‑deserved recognition of the country’s historical leadership in Pan‑Africanism, regional integration, and diplomacy.
According to the minister, the launch ceremony will be graced by key dignitaries including the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of Nigeria; the President of the ECOWAS Commission; Heads of State and Government from member countries; and representatives of regional and international partner organisations.
The event will be officially hosted by the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama.
As part of the launch, ECOWAS will unveil its 50th‑anniversary logo and declare the official theme for the Jubilee Celebrations. The launch will also set the tone for a year‑long series of commemorative events across all member states.
After the launch, Ghana will host an Extraordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers on April 22 and 23, where foreign and finance ministers of member states will deliberate on pressing regional issues, including the recent withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from the bloc to form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
A comprehensive report will be prepared for consideration by the ECOWAS Heads of State.
“While the withdrawal of the AES nations presents a challenge to our cohesion, ECOWAS must respond with enhanced diplomacy and unwavering commitment to the vision of a united and prosperous West Africa,” the Minister emphasised.
Ablakwa praised ECOWAS’s legacy over the past five decades, highlighting its achievements in regional trade, movement of people, infrastructure development, and peacekeeping efforts.
He pointed to successful initiatives such as the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme, the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme, and major projects like the West African Power Pool and the Abidjan‑Lagos Corridor as examples of meaningful progress.
He also noted the importance of celebrating the human impact of regional integration: “It is about the entrepreneur in Accra and Abidjan, the student in Lagos and Dakar, the peacekeeper in Banjul and Bissau — it is about people,” he said.
To ensure a successful celebration, Ghana has formed a Planning Committee chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is working closely with the ECOWAS Commission and other stakeholders.
While ECOWAS will bear most of the financial cost, Ghana is committed to providing full logistical and security support.
“This Jubilee is not just a commemoration — it is a call to action. We must use this occasion to rekindle hope in the ECOWAS vision and chart a bold course for the next 50 years,” the Minister concluded.
With West Africa looking to Ghana, the nation is poised to lead the ECOWAS@50 celebration with pride, unity, and purpose.
Govt working to reintegrate Ghanaians facing US deportation – Ablakwa
Suspected armed robbers attacked a group of miners along the Kotokuom road near Nyinahin in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
The incident occurred around 9:00 p.m., leaving one miner critically injured.
According to reports, the assailants—believed to be operating within the area—robbed the miners of cash and mobile phones during the attack.
One of the victims, 26-year-old Michael Larry, sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. He was initially rushed to the Nkawie Community Hospital but was later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi due to the severity of his injuries.
Speaking to Citi News, the victim’s brother, Stanley Obeng Larry, confirmed the incident and raised concerns about the increasing insecurity in the area.
In response to the attack, residents have appealed to the police to increase patrols along the Kotokuom–Nyinahin road to help curb the rising threat of armed robbery targeting miners and commuters.
Ghanaian music group Alabaster Box has officially taken legal action against rapper Medikal for allegedly using a portion of their song “Akwaaba” without permission.
The lawsuit comes just a week after the group threatened legal action against the rapper, and while many hoped the issue would be resolved amicably, Medikal’s actions, or lack thereof, have left the group with no other choice but to turn to the courts.
At the heart of this legal dispute is the first 10 seconds of Medikal’s song “Welcome to Africa,” which Alabaster Box and their legal team from Sustineri Attorneys say contains an unapproved sample of one of the group’s hit songs “Akwaaba.”
The group is seeking to protect their creative investment, intellectual property and also years of hardwork.
The five demands from Alabaster Box that Medikal ignored, which triggered the lawsuit
Before Alabaster Box headed to court, they attempted to resolve the matter by issuing five specific demands to Medikal.
They are;
1.Withdrawal of the song: The group’s first straightforward demand was that the infringing song should be pulled from all platforms both traditional and digital.
2. Stop performing and marketing the song: They also demanded an immediate end to all public performances, direct marketing, and sales of the song.
3.Terminate related agreements: They also asked for the cancellation of any ongoing contracts related to the song’s production, promotion, distribution, and sale.
They asked Medikal’s team to provide proof that those agreements had been cancelled.
4. Revenue accountability: Alabaster Box wanted a transparent account of all the money the song has accrued, from streaming, performances, and any other form of promotion or distribution.
5.List of all distributors: Lastly, they asked for a list of every person or organisation that had received a copy of the song and the steps being taken to retrieve those copies.
Medikal’s failure to act on these demands
Instead of complying with the demands or initiating a conversation with the music group, Medikal only edited the first 10 seconds of the song, and only on YouTube.
On other streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Audiomack, and Boomplay, the song remains in its original form, including the allegedly unauthorised “Akwaaba” sample.
Alabaster Box believes Medikal’s action isn’t only inadequate but also blatantly disrespectful.
Their legal team described it as “an admission of guilt” and “a clear indication that Medikal is aware of his infringing conduct.”
“Plaintiff avers that defendant following the receipt of plaintiff’s demands, and in admission of his infringing conduct, edited the infringing song on his YouTube channel to remove portions relating to Plaintiff’s copyrighted work,” the writ read.
More importantly, the group stated in their lawsuit that Medikal made this change without so much as a phone call, email, or any form of communication with the group or their lawyers.
In the writ submitted to the court, Alabaster Box pointed out that despite being served with formal demands, Medikal “ignored and refused to honour” them.
They further stated that while the YouTube version had been edited, the infringing version was still being promoted and distributed, from radio airplay to streaming platforms, the song is still out there and the group’s copyright is still being infringed, in their view.
“Plaintiff repeats paragraph 25 above and says further that defendant nonetheless maintained and continued to promote the version of the song with plaintiff’s infringing copyright work on other digital platforms such as Apple Music, Spotify, Audiomack, Boomplay and for airplay on radio stations despite plaintiff’s demands,” the writ continued.
Acting Registrar, Office of the Registrar of Companies, Maame Samma Peprah
The Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) has directed all companies to file their annual returns by June 30, 2025, or risk being deleted from the official register.
This directive is in accordance with Section 126(1) of the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992) and the Business Name Act, 1962 (Act 151).
It marks the first official directive issued under the tenure of the new Acting Registrar, Maame Samma Peprah.
According to her, companies that fail to attach financial statements or comply with the directive may face a penalty of GH¢1,000.
In addition, business names that are not renewed will be considered lapsed, allowing the Registrar to reassign them to other individuals or entities.
The Registrar emphasised that the goal is to promote transparency and strengthen regulatory compliance within Ghana’s business environment.
Companies are required to file their annual returns within 18 months of incorporation and annually thereafter.
These returns must include up-to-date information such as company directors, shareholders, and financial statements. This helps determine the financial and operational status of a business.

According to talkSPORT, the Los Blancos intend to restructure their technical team to enhance their performance going forward.
Klopp, who announced his retirement from coaching after departing Liverpool in 2024, is one of the options the club considers competent to handle their star-studded team, given his vast coaching experience.
Sources close to club President Florentino Perez believe Klopp is the ideal manager to change the club’s fortunes.

A military unit known as the Junglers is accused of widespread human rights violations under Jammeh
A former Gambian soldier has been convicted on torture charges by a US court for his involvement in crimes committed while feared strongman Yahya Jammeh was in power in the West African country.
Michael Sang Correa was found guilty of being part of a conspiracy to commit torture against suspected opponents while serving under a military unit known as the “Junglers”.
“The torture inflicted by Michael Sang Correa and his co-conspirators is abhorrent,” the Justice Department said.
It follows a week-long trial in Denver, Colorado, under a rarely used law that prosecutes crimes committed outside the US.
Correa was first detained in the US in 2019 for overstaying his visa, three years after settling in Denver where he reportedly worked as a day labourer.
The 46-year-old was charged in 2020 with torture and conspiracy to commit the torture of at least six people in The Gambia under a seldom-used law that allows people to be tried by the US judicial system for torture allegedly committed abroad.
He is the first non-US citizen to be convicted on torture charges in a federal district court for crimes committed overseas, according to the Department of Justice. The law has only been used twice since it was enacted in 1994 but both of the previous cases were brought against US citizens.
The Department of Justice said Correa “tried to evade responsibility for his crimes in The Gambia by coming to the US and hiding his past”.
“But we found him, we investigated him,” said Matthew Galeotti, head of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.
The evidence at trial showed that Correa and his fellow Junglers tortured five people accused of plotting a coup against Jammeh.
The victims, including high-profile members of Jammeh’s inner circle who fell out with him, told the jury how they were tortured by being electrocuted and smothered with plastic bags.
“Correa and his co-conspirators beat, stabbed, burned, and electrocuted the victims,” the Justice Department said.
Prosecutors on Tuesday said Correa “played an integral role in inflicting this torture on the victims”.
He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for each of the five torture counts and the count of conspiracy to commit torture, the Justice Department said.
His lawyers had argued that Correa was a low-ranking soldier who only obeyed orders from his superiors.
But while the jury agreed that there was evidence that the Junglers lived in “constant fear,” prosecutors said at trial that some Junglers had refused to obey orders to torture victims.
“This conviction sends a clear message that perpetrators of human rights violations cannot escape accountability, regardless of where they commit their crimes,” said Sirra Ndow, chairperson of the Alliance of Victim-Led Organisations in The Gambia, (AVLO).
Jammeh, who seized power in 1994, foiled several attempts to overthrow him before he lost an election in 2016 to Adama Barrow in a surprise defeat.
His rule was characterised by allegations of human rights abuses and state repression, which he denied.
He went into exile in Equatorial Guinea after his defeat, though he remains an influential figure in The Gambia.
A Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC), held between 2019 and 2021, unearthed the crimes committed under Jammeh and recommended prosecution for those who were involved.
Last year, Jammeh’s former interior minister was sentenced to 20 years in jail by a Swiss court for crimes against humanity.
The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has issued a firm warning to heads of health training institutions, cautioning against any attempts to intimidate or exert undue influence on him as he carries out his mandate.
Addressing members of the Conference of Heads of Health Training Institutions (COHHETI) during a stakeholder engagement on April 16, 2025, Mr. Akandoh underscored the importance of dialogue, mutual respect, and professionalism in resolving issues within the health training sector.
He emphasized that while his office remains open to constructive discussions, efforts to create tension or pressure the Ministry into making decisions would not be tolerated.
“So please, if you want to come to me or any of the offices in the Ministry, let’s open our doors to you. And don’t cause harm before you come here. Whenever you come and discuss with me in the office, nobody will know in the public arena,” the Minister stated.
Mr. Akandoh also raised concerns about the growing trend of institutional heads inciting students or escalating grievances publicly without first engaging the Ministry through established channels.
“So, those of you who think that if a decision is taken from the Ministry, you won’t have the patience to follow up and instead incite students to go on demonstration — I want to make it clear that I will not be intimidated,” he warned.
The Health Minister reaffirmed his commitment to transparent and collaborative governance, but stressed that deliberate attempts to undermine the Ministry’s authority would be strongly resisted.
He urged COHHETI members to prioritize open dialogue and seek resolution through appropriate administrative processes to ensure the smooth running of the health training sector.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has assured the public that it is actively working to facilitate the safe return, reintegration, and reunification of Ghanaians being deported from the United States of America.
Following intensified immigration enforcement under the Trump administration, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested over 3,500 undocumented immigrants across the country since President Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20. Deportation flights have also resumed, with some migrants being transported using U.S. military aircraft.
According to the Pew Research Center, the United States—home to a population of about 341 million—hosts an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants.
Ghana is among the countries affected, with 160 of its nationals currently facing imminent deportation.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra ahead of the ECOWAS at 50 launch, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, confirmed that comprehensive efforts are underway to ensure the safe and dignified return of the affected individuals.
He noted that there have been no significant updates since the last report from Ghana’s embassy in Washington but reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting the returnees and helping them reintegrate into society.
“The number, as we have received from our foreign service officials, is that about 160 Ghanaians are on the deportation list, and the deportation exercise is going on. For us, on the grounds of humanitarian reasons and human rights, we have decided not to publicise information about them.
“So, when they arrive, our team welcomes them and helps them with integration and connects them with their families. We are also working with other partners quietly because it is important that we respect the dignity of our fellow compatriots and not expose them to media coverage,” he stated.

Actor and self-proclaimed relationship adviser, Adams Kehinde, popularly known as Lege Miami, has come under fire after saying that married women who use passwords on their phones are like “prostitutes” and should leave their homes.
In a video he posted on his Instagram handle on Tuesday which went viral on Wednesday, Lege made it clear that he believes only men have the right to keep their phones private and even cheat on their partners.
He insisted that women are not allowed to do the same.
He said, “A woman who is married and uses a password on her phone is a prostitute. She should pack her load and leave the house.
“Any housewife who has a password on her phone is a prostitute. If a married woman can put a password on her phone, she is a prostitute.
“So, because your husband has his phone passworded, you too want to put yours as well? You are not ready for marriage. You can pack your load and leave the house. Quote me!”
Lege also insisted that men are allowed to cheat but women are not.
He stated, “As a relationship expert, I will say that you pack your load and leave the house.
“Your husband can cheat, but as a woman, you don’t have the right to cheat. That’s how to be a good and responsible wife.”
This, however, did not sit well with many social media critics, especially women who noted that Lage was biased and one-sided.

KEY LEADERSHIP of major Christian religious institutions in the country have vowed to support the National Sanitation Day Campaign, an initiative led by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA).
This commitment, made by these religious institutions, came to light when the sector minister Ahmed Ibrahim, and his deputy Rita Odoley Sowah reached out to the religious bodies, urging them to rally support behind the John Mahama administration to drive national development, with emphasis on the reintroduction and institutionalisation of the sanitation campaign.
At a visit to the Christian Council of Ghana, the Chairman, Rt. Rev. Dr. Hilliard Dela Dogbe assured the minister of their willingness to support the campaign, to help prevent the spread of waterborne and sanitation-related diseases.
Rt. Rev. Dr. Dogbe emphasised the importance of stewardship, citing biblical principles, saying, “God placed us here to take care of our environment, and as stewards of God’s resources, we believe caring for the environment is not just a national duty but a Christian obligation, hence we will do our best to ensure this campaign becomes a success.”
Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, welcomed the initiative to declare May 3 as National Sanitation Day, pledging his support and urging all Presbyterians and non-Presbyterians to join the effort.
He emphasised the need for discipline in schools and collective action to tackle sanitation challenges in the country. “All of us talk about the good old days, but none of us is ready to do the right things if we allow discipline to take place in our schools,” he stated.
Rt. Rev. Dr. Kwakye expressed gratitude to the government for signing a memorandum of understanding with the Christian Council and other faith-based bodies on education, particularly mission schools.
President of the Southern Ghana Union of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA), Pastor Thomas Techie Ocran, entreated the minister to make exclusive provisions for members of the church, indicating that the set day for the sanitation exercise falls on Saturday. “We observe the Sabbath on Saturday, which is a day of rest and worship. So if you can make in your plan a specific day for us, be it May 2, or May 4 for us to partake in the exercise, we will be grateful,” he stressed.
The sector minister, Ahmed Ibrahim, on his part, said sanitation is now perceived as ‘someone else’s responsibility’, and its effects are clear: choked gutters, markets filled with refuse, beaches covered in plastic, and fishermen catching plastic instead of fish.
“We have plastic recycling plants, but they can’t pick up all the plastic unless we decide to ensure total compliance with sanitation practices and make sanitation part of our culture, guided by the principle that cleanliness is next to godliness,” he added.
President John Dramani Mahama, has indicated his government’s preparedness to reposition the country’s leading policy and development Bank, the Ghana Export–Import Bank (GEXIM), to play a critical role in transforming the country’s agricultural landscape.
President Mahama gave this assurance at the launch of the “Feed Ghana Programme” on Saturday, April 12, 202,5, in Techiman in the Bono East Region.
The programme is expected to play a crucial role in transforming the country’s agricultural landscape, providing support to farmers to increase production and boost the country’s food security.
During his speech, the President highlighted innovative agricultural financing, stating,
“Financing remains one of the key barriers to agricultural investment. To address this, the Exim Bank will be refocused to offer concessional loans to farmers and agricultural enterprises, especially those involved in export and value addition. The Government will develop agro-processing zones equipped with irrigation, roads, power and warehousing to attract private investment and processing of agricultural produce,” he stated.
The “Feed Ghana Programme” initiative seeks to boost agricultural production to feed the population, provide raw materials to feed agro-processing factories and create jobs for the teeming youth.
It involves sub-projects on vegetables, grains, poultry, oil palm, tubers and other import substitutes to reduce the country’s reliance on imports and transition into an export-heavy economy.
Speaking to a session of the media after the launch of the event, the Acting Chief Executive of GEXIM, Hon. Sylvester Mensah indicated the Bank’s readiness to support the “Feed Ghana Programme” which he said is aligned with the bank’s immediate priorities of increasing food production, supporting agro-processing and investing in projects with high job creation opportunities.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has stated that the government’s takeover of the Damang Mine on Saturday, April 19, 2025, signifies a departure from the era of automatic mining lease renewals.
He added that the period in which less-developed countries were controlled by developed nations through indirect means has come to an end.
In a press release sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the Minister of Lands explained that the takeover is in accordance with Section 23 of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703).
The Act represents a significant shift in Ghana’s natural resource management approach, prioritising national interest and transparency over automatic lease renewals.
The Minister further noted that the takeover underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted operations and safeguarding jobs.
“In light of the aforementioned, and in the national interest, under Article 257(6) of the 1992 Constitution, the State shall assume oversight and operational responsibility for the Damang Mine effective April 19, 2025. Fundamental to this decision is the government’s commitment to maintaining uninterrupted operations, protecting jobs, honoring existing valid service contracts, ensuring compliance with legal and fiscal obligations, and securing Ghana’s rightful benefits from this critical resource,” Armah-Kofi Buah stated.
He emphasised: “The Damang Mine’s return to state oversight marks a critical step in Ghana’s economic reset, ensuring its gold reserves directly benefit citizens and drive long-term prosperity.”
“This decision aligns with the government’s policy shift away from the neo-colonial stance of automatic license renewals for mining in Ghana, focusing instead on a thorough reassessment of mining licenses to ensure optimal national benefits. With that said, we are on the lookout for value propositions on the utilisation of our mineral resources that align with this vision,” the Lands Minister affirmed.
The decision not to renew the mining lease follows the expiration of the current 30-year lease, which was originally granted on April 18, 1995, and expires on April 18, 2025.
The government has stated that this move is in line with its broader mission to transform the nation’s economic landscape.

Comedian and social commentator Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM) has praised former President John Dramani Mahama for his renewed focus on agriculture and economic development.
He has labelled it a much-needed shift from political distractions.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, KSM referenced the recent cocaine scandal as an example of how a “vacuum” in governance can lead to unnecessary controversies.
He argued that when there is little discussion on national progress, trivial issues dominate public discourse.
“I was complaining about a vacuum where it appeared that nothing was going on. And when there is a vacuum, someone will find something else to fill it. That is why Rev Ntim Fordjour occupied the vacuum.
“This is not news; someone had said something without backing and the whole nation turned towards that. It was because there was a vacuum,” KSM said.
However, following recent news of government’s plans to boost agriculture, including onion plantations and local rice production to reduce imports and strengthen exports, KSM expressed optimism, stating that it was what the country needed.
“Finally, important things are on the table. This excites me. That is what I am talking about. Something positive is happening; let that take centre stage. Instead of turning zeros into heroes. Let the positive things be the topic of discussion. This is how we make the country grow,” KSM said.
He urged government and Ghanaians to pay close attention to such initiatives, stating, “We will not allow this to die out. Let’s not do this for show; let’s follow up and ensure real progress.”

It appears a cross-section of the public have expressed their displeasure over the ongoing Asantehene. Otumfuo Osei II’s mediation into the age-old chieftaincy conflict that has been bedevilling Bawku.
Bawku, the once vibrant trading hub of the Upper East Region and the entire northern part of Ghana, has become a ghost town for decades because of violent clashes which have led to the loss of lives and destruction of properties, forcing people to leave in droves.
Despite President John Dramani Mahama’s optimism that the ‘Otumfuo Mediation Process’ will lead to finding a lasting solution to the chieftaincy conflict, these critics, including residents of Bawku, have asked the Asantehene not to interfere in the conflict.
They say Otumfuo Osei Tutu II should not interfere in the conflict because he did not start it.
But does the Otumfuo’s mediation constitute an interference in the affairs of another kingdom, or is he dictating who becomes the ruler of another kingdom?

Maybe an explanation of the role of a mediator in conflict resolution will help understand the exact role of the Asantehene.
First of all, a mediator is a neutral third party who assists parties in a conflict to arrive at a settlement. Like the Asantehene is currently doing, the mediator is expected to call for a meeting of the parties in a conflict to discuss the issue(s) at hand and help them find possible solutions.
It is instructive to note that the mediator does not find the solutions to a conflict. S/he helps the parties, who are the decision-makers, to express their positions, listens to their disputes, and searches for a solution.
Via Mediation Arbitration Centre lists the following as the roles for mediators:
– Facilitate communication between both parties.
– Set up a meeting between the parties in the conflict after the appointment of the mediator.
– Review the mediation proceedings – in the first meeting, the mediator requests the parties to jointly sign a form that mentions the rules and framework of the proceeding. Then the mediator goes ahead with explaining how the mediation proceedings are going to happen.
– Invite the parties to give a brief description of the facts from both their perspectives.
– Discuss the issue at hand and try to come up with a solution which is viable to both parties.
So, from the above, it is clear that the Otumfuo is only going to facilitate the process to help find peace in Bawku.
Otumfuo’s record in mediation:
Now, what is the record of the Asantehene in mediation? Can he help find a lasting solution to the Bawku conflict that has been a headache to the country for several years?
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has been credited for saving Ghana from chaos on several occasions.
Here are some of the instances the King of Asanteman helped save the blushes of Ghana.
Saving Ghana from chaos after the 2016 Election
The Asantehene’s mediation also helped maintain peace in Ghana after the 2016 presidential election.
Nathan Kofi Boakye, a retired Commissioner of Police (COP) and current Director of Operations at the Presidency, who is widely known as Commander One, indicated that there would have been chaos after the declaration of the 2016 presidential election results but for the Asantehene’s intervention.
According to Kofi Boakye, who was the Ashanti Regional Commander at the time, it was the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s intervention that made it possible for the election results to be announced.
The retired COP, who made these remarks in an interview with Opemsuo Radio, on April 16, 2024, explained that Otumfuo engaged all the stakeholders in the election for peace to prevail.
“In fact, when the EC could not announce the result of the 2016 election, it was His Majesty who intervened. It was he (the Otumfuo) who came in for Charlotte Osei to be able to announce the results. I’m telling you plainly. If you know the kind of talks that went on at the Manhyia… Ghanaians must cherish him (the Asantehene) and pray for him to live long,” he said in the Twi dialect.
He reiterated: “I’m telling you, if you know the level of talks that went on for the announcement of the results of the 2016 elections… I can’t disclose everything. So, we should give the Asantehene the respect due him.”
Saving Ghana from economic catastrophes
The Asantehene has been credited for saving Ghana from economic catastrophes on a number of occasions.
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor said that but for Otumfuo’s mediation, his government would not have secured an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout, which saved Ghana from any economic catastrophe during his tenure as president.
Speaking in a recent interview with Opemsuo Radio, former President Kufuor said that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) decided to throw out a request by his government for a bailout programme because of rumours of some corrupt activities at the Ministry of Finance.
He said that at that time, Ghana had been classified as a Highly Indebted Poor Country (HIPC), which made it difficult for his government to get the needed funds to run the country and was in dire need of the IMF bailout.
Former President Kufuor said that when the Otumfuo heard that the IMF had thrown out Ghana’s request, he took action, and within days, the Fund accepted Ghana’s request.
The current President, John Dramani Mahama, also credited the Asantehene for helping Ghana to secure an IMF Extended Credit Facility during his first term in office.
He said that the IMF was delaying Ghana’s request for a bailout in 2016, but immediately the Asantehene intervened, the Fund agreed to it.
“Because of that programme, he (Otumfuo) flew to Washington to have talks with Mr Wolfensohn, who together with Otumfuo went and spoke with the IMF Director, Madam Christine Lagarde, and within a short period of time, we had the Extended Credit Facility.
“That was the programme that turned the economy around because under that programme, in 2016, almost for the first time in our history, we did not overspend our budget,” Mahama said.
Mediating the Dagbon chieftaincy conflict:
The Asantehene has also been credited for the role he played in resolving the chieftaincy dispute in the Dagbon Kingdom.
Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said on November 27, 2024, that because of the Asantehene’s leadership, the Dagbon conflict came to an end during his presidency, which has led to him (Akufo-Addo) being installed as a Dagomba chief.
“There are a lot of things you have done for me, some of which I can’t mention in public. But there are some I have to mention, like the Dagbon chieftaincy conflict. The conflict had been raging for about 15 years when I came in, with nobody being able to resolve it.
“President Kufuor appointed you as the chairman of the committee for you to look into the conflict together with the Yagbonwura and Nayiri, and it was during my tenure that it was resolved. I know that if not for your leadership, this would not have happened, and I’m also very grateful for this,” he stated.
About the Bawku Conflict:
The conflict stems from ancient historical claims, with the Mamprusi asserting their traditional authority over the Kusasi. British colonial rule also played a significant role in shaping these tensions, as some argue that colonial policies deepened divisions between the groups.
Over time, disputes over chieftaincy, land ownership, and political influence have continued to fuel the conflict, making resolution challenging.

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) is urging the government to prioritise the development of satellite markets across the country as a strategic step toward improving Ghana’s market infrastructure and easing congestion in major trading centers.
This follows a recent comment made by the Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, who threatened to discipline traders who fail to comply with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s (KMA) directive against trading in unauthorised areas.
On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the Mayor issued a two-week ultimatum to traders operating along pavements within the central business district to vacate the area or face sanctions, including being lashed.
Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb Business, the Director of Communication at GUTA, Joseph Paddy, said the association strongly objects to the mayor’s statement.
He stated that one of the most effective solutions would be for the government to build satellite markets to reduce pressure on central markets across the country.
“Why won’t the government partner with the public so that, together, we can create better market spaces for our people? We need to build more satellite markets so people don’t have to travel all the way from Kasoa to Accra just to buy or sell. The population outweighs the market spaces, and that’s why we see people trading in unauthorised places,” he said.
He further called for stronger collaboration between the government and key stakeholders, such as trade associations and market leaders, to help resolve the rising issues faced by traders.

Nigerian Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has claimed that his breakthrough hit, ‘Dami Duro,’ which was released in 2012, was the ringtone of the then-president, Goodluck Jonathan.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has begun regrouping with renewed energy and determination for a political comeback in 2028.
According to the party’s Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, the NPP is not only reflecting on its 2024 defeat but actively preparing to reclaim power from what he described as “this very incompetent government.”
Speaking on Joy News’ , Haruna Mohammed stated, “We are very focused. We are very determined. We are very sure. Based on the discussions we had before the presentation of the report, we are prepared to fight on in 2028.”

“You remember that on January 2, we held a National Council meeting where an ad hoc committee was established to look into two things: why we lost the 2024 elections and what amendments or restructuring could strengthen the party,” he explained.
The committee, according to Haruna, was given three months to complete its work. “April 16 was the day Professor Mike Ocquaye’s report was submitted,” he noted.
Ahead of receiving the report, the National Council also held a National Executive Committee meeting to deliberate on other matters before proceeding to the main Council session.
Haruna Mohammed described the meeting as highly charged and full of purpose, emphasizing the party’s unity and resolve.
“Knowing the NPP and where we’ve come from, the members at the National Council were very focused, very determined, and very sure,” he said. “It showed how resilient and prepared we are to wrestle power from this very incompetent government.”
The Deputy General Secretary was firm in his critique of the current administration, stating, “This incompetent government must be replaced. We are ready. The NPP is coming back.”
He stressed that the party’s revival is deeply rooted in its history and tradition.
“The move of the people did stand with the tradition and history of the New Patriotic Party,” he emphasized.
Haruna Mohammed concluded by signaling a shift in the NPP’s posture from reflection to confrontation, hinting at a fierce political battle ahead.
“We know where we fell. We know what went wrong. And now we are going to rise again,” he declared.

Zijin Mining Group Co., Ltd. has completed the acquisition of Newmont Corporation’s Akyem Gold Mine for $1 billion, expanding the Chinese company’s gold production capacity and reinforcing its international growth strategy.

Located in one of the world’s major gold belts, the Akyem Gold Mine is an open-pit operation that has maintained stable production in recent years. The mine employs a conventional carbon-in-leach processing method and has an annual throughput capacity of 8.5 million tonnes. Gold output between 2021 and 2024 totaled 40.6 tonnes, with 2022 marking the peak year at 13.1 tonnes.
In 2023, the Akyem project generated $574 million in operating income and posted a net profit of $128 million, underscoring its commercial viability and operational efficiency.
Zijin in a statement cited the mine’s favorable mineralization and potential for reserve expansion as key factors in the acquisition. The company plans to conduct further geological exploration and technical evaluations aimed at increasing resource estimates and extending mine life.
The acquisition comes amid a period of elevated gold prices, providing tailwinds for Zijin’s broader strategy to scale up gold output and diversify its asset base across key mining jurisdictions.
