Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha has reignited the rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria as the two countries prepare to renew their iconic football competition in an upcoming showdown on May 28, 2025, at Brentford FC’s Gtech Community Stadium in London.

In an interview with Joy Sports, Okocha emphasised the intensity and entertainment the fixture always delivers, both on and off the pitch.

“It’s always a good match to watch. The rivalry is healthy, so I’m expecting a great game and plenty of banter before and after the match. And if we have to involve Jollof rice, we will,” he said.

The match is part of the four-nation Unity Cup tournament, which also features Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago. The mini-tournament aims to celebrate African and Caribbean football.

The rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria extends far beyond the football pitch, touching nearly every corner of culture, from heated debates over who owns Afrobeats to the never-ending battle for Jollof rice supremacy.

Whether in music, food, or sport, the competition is fierce, passionate, and proudly shared by both nations.

Sudan war to enter third year as RSF assaults in Darfur intensify

The United Nations and rights groups are calling for an end to the violence in Sudan as the second anniversary of its civil war looms and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has intensified its attacks in Darfur, killing dozens of people in recent days.

As representatives from dozens of countries are to meet in London on Tuesday to try to resolve the Sudan crisis, Human Rights Watch urged the international community to “urgently work to protect civilians and guarantee safe, unfettered aid provision” in the country.

“For the last two years, Sudan’s warring parties have subjected the population to horrific abuses and suffering, and blocked aid, plunging the country into the world’s worst humanitarian disasters,” Mohamed Osman, Sudan researcher at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement on Monday.

“International leaders should ensure that discussions to improve the humanitarian situation go hand in hand with commitments at the highest level to protect civilians.”

This week marks two years since war broke out on April 15, 2023, between the RSF and the Sudanese military. It has killed thousands of people, displaced nearly 13 million people, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and sparked a hunger crisis in parts of the country.

In recent weeks, the army has managed to push RSF fighters out of the capital, Khartoum, but the paramilitary group has been claiming advances in the western region of Darfur, where an already dire humanitarian crisis has been worsening.

On Sunday, the RSF said it took control of the Zamzam camp for displaced people near el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur state.

The assault has killed dozens of people, including 23 children and nine aid workers, according to the UN.

‘Thousands of displaced trapped and cut off from aid’

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned on Monday that the fighting near el-Fasher, which has been under an RSF blockade, is hampering access to humanitarian assistance.

“Thousands of displaced people are trapped & cut off from aid,” OCHA Sudan said in a social media post.

“Hostilities must stop now. All those engaged in the conflict must ensure safe passage for civilians and humanitarian access.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had condemned the attacks on civilians in and around el-Fasher, urging an end to the fighting.

“The Secretary-General emphasizes that attacks directed against civilians and indiscriminate attacks are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law,” Guterres said in a statement issued via his spokesperson on Sunday.

“Humanitarian relief personnel and medical personnel must be respected and protected. The perpetrators of these attacks must be brought to justice. Safe, unhindered and sustained access to the area, including the Zamzam camp, is urgently needed. Civilians who want to leave must be allowed to do so safely.”

In a joint statement on Monday, Egypt and Qatar also expressed “grave concerns over the ongoing armed conflict in the Sudan and emphasized the importance of an immediate cessation of military operations”.

Warring rival generals

But the violence continued on Monday. Al Jazeera Arabic quoted local sources in reporting that RSF fighters were shelling the Abu Shouk camp for displaced people outside el-Fasher.

Sudan has seen growing instability since longtime President Omar al-Bashir was removed from power in 2019 after months of antigovernment protests.

In October 2021, the Sudanese military staged a coup against the civilian government of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, leading to his resignation in early 2022.

Sudan’s army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and his rival general Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, who leads the RSF, shared power after the coup but then started fighting for control of the state and its resources in April 2023.

Davis Makori, humanitarian policy and advocacy specialist, highlighted the impact of the war on children – including psychological trauma, gender-based violence and inability to attend school – saying minors make up half of the civilians affected by the conflict.

“While there are pockets of states in Sudan that are not actually active conflict zones, this humanitarian crisis has spread to almost every facet of life,” Makori told Al Jazeera.

The Lebanese Community in Ghana has awarded full scholarships to 26 students at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), as part of its ongoing support for education in the country.

The beneficiaries include four postgraduate students, 12 undergraduate journalism students, four public relations students, four film and television students, and two translation students.

A ceremony was held to present the awards, with dignitaries in attendance including the Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Maher Kheir; Vice-Chancellor of UniMAC, Prof. Eric Opoku Mensah; Acting Registrar, Mrs. Patience Sowah; Dean of Students, Dr. Rodalina Martey; Director of Finance, Mr. Francis Obeng; Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Nana Efua Rockson; faculty deans, senior university staff, and a representative of the Lebanese Community, Mr. Naaman Ashkar.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Kheir emphasised the importance of nurturing a culture that supports youth development.

“Let us continue to build a culture that celebrates excellence, encourages creativity, and opens doors for every young dreamer,” he said.

He commended the students for their hard work and dedication, stating, “You truly deserve this moment. Let it inspire you to go even further, to challenge conventions, to innovate boldly, and to uplift others as you rise.”

“The scholarship is a vote of confidence, a recognition of hard work, and a stepping stone to bigger possibilities. It says: We believe in you. We are investing in your future,” he added.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Opoku Mensah expressed gratitude to the Lebanese Community and urged the beneficiaries to maintain academic discipline and good character.

“We do not take this support for granted. Study hard and let your contribution impact society positively,” he said.

One of the recipients, Ms. Nancy Adjorkor Oman, expressed appreciation on behalf of the students.

“The scholarship has eased the financial burden on our families and boosted our academic performance. We will work hard to justify the confidence reposed in us,” she said.

Mr. Naaman Ashkar, representing the Lebanese Community, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ghanaian students and said the scholarship programme would continue to expand.

The scholarship scheme began in 2013, initially supporting journalism and law students. It has since expanded to include other disciplines such as public relations, translation, and film and television.

Institutions that benefit from the programme include UniMAC, the University of Ghana, the Ghana School of Law, and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Ambassador Kheir presented a cheque for GHC124,425 to cover the scholarships for the 26 students.

Since its inception, the Lebanese Scholarship Programme has supported over 600 Ghanaian students.

Partey Scores As Arsenal Draw With Brentford

0

Thomas Partey

Thomas Partey found the net for Arsenal in a 1-1 draw with Brentford at the Emirates, a result that leaves the Gunners 13 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta made five changes to the side that beat Real Madrid 3-0 in midweek, and the game struggled to find rhythm early on. Brentford’s Kristoffer Ajer forced the first save in the 20th minute, before Arsenal had a goal disallowed for offside.

Leandro Trossard tested Brentford keeper Mark Flekken before half-time, but it was Partey who eventually broke the deadlock in the 61st minute. A surging run from Declan Rice set up the Ghanaian midfielder to blast home the opener.

Brentford hit back in the 74th minute, with Yoane Wissa hooking in a clever finish after Nathan Collins headed the ball across the box.

Liverpool extended their lead to 13 points after defeating West Ham 2-1 on Sunday. Liverpool now needs two more wins to lift the Premier League title for a record equaling 20 times.

Arsenal, meanwhile, turn their attention to Wednesday’s Champions League second leg in Madrid.

World Bank to upscale Ghana’s renewable energy, help manage flood

0

By Francis Ntow

Accra, April 14, GNA – The World Bank has pledged to increase Ghana’s renewable energy to ensure accessible, low emission, reliable and affordable electricity to businesses and individuals.

The Bank has also pledged support for initiatives to tackle perennial flooding in the country, including improvement in infrastructure development.

Mr Wencai Zhang, World Bank Managing Director and Chief Administrative Officer (MDCAO), gave those assurances over the weekend when he visited some World Bank supported projects in the country.

He visited Africa’s largest single solar rooftop project, with a capacity of 16.82 MW, commissioned in July 2024 to provide a cleaner and more cost-effective source of power for businesses in the Tema Free Zone.

He also visited the drainage works and large-scale disaster risk and flood management, including the lower Odaw channel and Korle lagoon under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project.

These projects are to improve the management of flood risk and solid waste in the Odaw River Basin and improve access to basic infrastructure and services in targeted communities within the Basin.

Mr Zhang ended his tour at the redeveloped Kwame Nkrumah Memorial and Mausoleum Park successfully completed under the World Bank financed Ghana Tourism Development Project (GTDP).

Speaking with the management of LMI Holdings, managers of Africa’s largest single solar rooftop project, the World Bank Managing Director, said institution would continue to support sustainable and resilient infrastructure to generate social, economic benefits.

He was confident that the 16.82 megawatts rooftop solar project would reduce energy costs, improve energy sector efficiency, and help reduce emissions in the country.

“Looking ahead, we are going to work on another project to support the government’s efforts for industrialisation and more renewable energy development in the country. These new projects certainly can further bring our cooperation to a new level.” Mr Zhang said.

“We will not only bring the financing resources but also share global best practices on how other countries undertake the energy sector reform to help develop renewable energy, including rooftop solar energy,” he added.

Mr John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister of Energy and Green Transition, applauded the World Bank for the solar project, pledging the government’s full support to similar initiatives to the country’s energy mix.

He urged LMI Holdings to show interest in existing projects to provide the lowest possible price when it comes to solar energy, as the government planned to roll out an all-in-one solar system for streetlights.

Marriage is a long journey, every day is not sweet

Ghana’s Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has advised his brother to be prepared for the realities of marriage while offering his support.

Social media was abuzz after videos and pictures from the wedding of Emmanuel George, who married his long-time fiancée, Ruth Ewoenam, surfaced online.

The beautiful ceremony, held in Accra on April 12, 2025, saw various dignitaries and family members in attendance.

Speaking at the wedding, Sam George, who also served as the best man, reflected on the joys and challenges of marriage while celebrating his brother’s union.

He noted that Emmanuel had been his best man 13 years ago when he married his wife, Vera.

“It’s a thing of pride to see my kid brother walk down the aisle today. Thirteen years ago, when I got married, he was my best man. And 13 years later, as he gets married, I’m his best man as well.

“I wish him all the best. I wish him the best that marriage and life have to offer, for himself and his lovely wife, Ruth,” he said.

The MP offered a piece of advice to his brother, dispelling the myth of a “fairy tale” marriage.

“Marriage is a long journey. Every day is not sweet. Every day is not a bed of roses. People have a fairy tale idea of marriage, but 13 years down the line, the little I’ve learned is that it’s topsy-turvy.

“There are very nice days, and there are very tough days. There are days when you ask yourself, ‘Why did I even get married?’ There are days when you wake up and your wife is annoying you, and the same way, you will annoy her. But I mean, it’s a ‘for better or worse’ journey,” he added.

Sam George, however, balanced the realism with hope, wishing Emmanuel and Ruth more days of “butterflies” than anger.

“The better parts are the good days when you feel the butterflies in your stomach. I pray and wish that the days of butterflies will be more than the days of anger.”

Sam George’s speech concluded with warm wishes for the couple: fruitful parenthood, healthy children, and “maybe twins” to bless their union.

“I pray and wish for sound kids, a fruitful marriage, healthy children, very few hospital visits — except for child delivery — and maybe twins for them.”

In conclusion, Sam George assured them of his unwavering support.

“I’ve got their back. And Emma should know that I love him dearly as my brother, and I’ll always have him on lockdown. He knows he can always count on his big brother at any time. So long as I’m alive, he’s covered,” he said.

Don’t present Bawumia as flagbearer in 2028

Ernest Owusu Bempah (L) and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia (R) Ernest Owusu Bempah (L) and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia (R)

A Deputy Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ernest Owusu Bempah, has advised the leadership of the party not to retain former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as its presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.

In an interview on Oyerepa FM, monitored by GhanaWeb on Monday, April 14, 2025, he attributed the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections to its flagbearer, claiming that the grassroots were unhappy with Dr Bawumia’s candidacy.

“For the first time, I met a taxi driver who is a member of the NPP and told me he voted for the NDC in the 2024 election. He even showed me his party card. His reason was simple: we didn’t choose the right candidate. Over 2.1 million NPP supporters abstained from voting because they did not approve of our presidential candidate,” he said.

Ernest Owusu Bempah also challenged the media to conduct an independent survey to verify claims of disinterest among the party’s support base.

“Go out there with a hidden camera and ask the ordinary people; the NPP party base, supporters, refused to vote. Do you know what that means?”

“There are so many things happening in this country. The youth have lost interest in the party. I’ve been on the ground, and it’s not a joke. The truth is that ordinary Ghanaians want the NPP to change the flagbearer in 2028,” he noted.

In response to their defeat in last year’s general elections, the party has commissioned a committee led by the former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, to evaluate the election outcome and submit a report as part of its reorganisation efforts for the 2028 elections.

Goldfields’ Damang Mine failed to meet requirements for lease renewal – Report

0

Martin Ayisi is CEO of the Minerals Commission Martin Ayisi is CEO of the Minerals Commission

A report has noted that the Minerals Commission’s decision to reject the renewal of Goldfields’ Damang Mine lease was due to the company’s failure to meet the requirements for an extension.

According to a report by MyJoyOnline.com, checks at the Commission confirmed that the rejection was warranted.

Section 44 of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), outlines the conditions and processes under which a mining lease can be renewed.

These are:

(1) A holder of a mining lease may, at any time but not later than three months

before the expiration of the initial term of the mining lease or a shorter period that

the Minister allows, apply in a prescribed form to the Minister for an extension of

the term of the lease for a further period of up to thirty years in respect of all or any

number of contiguous blocks the subject of the lease and in respect of all or any of

the minerals the subject of the lease.

(2) An application made under subsection (1) shall be accompanied with a proposed programme of mineral operations.

(3) On an application duly made under subsection (1) and if the holder has

materially complied with the obligations imposed by this Act with respect to the

holding of and activities pursuant to the mining lease, the Minister shall grant the extension of the term of the lease on conditions specified in writing.

(4) Where the holder has made an application for an extension of the term of the

lease, and the term of the lease would but for this subsection, expire; the lease shall continue in force in respect of the land the subject of the application until the application is determined.

(5) A dispute between the Minister and a holder in respect of a matter that arises under this section shall be resolved under section 27.

It is, however, unclear which of these requirements the company failed to meet, as the government has yet to release an official statement regarding the matter.

This comes after the government rejected Goldfields Company Limited’s request for the 30-year mining lease of the Damang Mine, which was granted by the Government of Ghana in April 1995 and is set to expire on April 18, 2025.

Experts have called on the government to make the reasons behind its decision public.

Despite his experiences in Europe and the disciplined diets often associated with professional football, Weidenfeller revealed that nothing compares to his love for Fufu.

“I love Fufu. My good friend always brings Fufu from Köln to my house, and we eat it,” he shared.

Weidenfeller was part of the Dortmund Legends team that visited Ghana in June 2022 for a game against the African Giants, a team captained by Abedi Pele, on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Sudan’s RSF claims control of famine-hit Zamzam camp in Darfur

0

Zamzam is among five areas in Sudan where famine has been detected Zamzam is among five areas in Sudan where famine has been detected

Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has announced that it took control of famine-hit Zamzam camp in the western Darfur region, after two days of heavy shelling and gunfire there and in nearby areas that killed at least 100 people, including children and aid workers.

The RSF said in a statement on Sunday that it deployed “military units to secure civilians and humanitarian medical workers in Zamzam … after successfully liberating the camp entirely from the grip of” the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).

The paramilitary group on Friday launched ground and aerial assaults on North Darfur’s besieged capital of el-Fasher and the nearby Zamzam and Abu Shouk displacement camps.

The United Nations said on Saturday that more than 100 people were feared dead in the RSF attacks, while an army-aligned faction led by Darfur Governor Minni Minnawi on Sunday put the toll at more than four times that.

The RSF denied targeting civilians inside Zamzam, saying that the SAF was using the camp as a “military base” and using civilians as “human shields”.

In recent weeks, the RSF has stepped up its attacks on refugee camps around el-Fasher in its effort to seize the last state capital in Darfur not under its control.

About 180km (112 miles) east of el-Fasher, in Um Kadadah, activists also reported that the paramilitary killed 56 civilians over two days of attacks on a town they seized on the road to el-Fasher.

The RSF has also been accused by rights groups of using brutal sexual violence as a weapon against civilians.

The fighting intensified after the army last month recaptured the capital Khartoum, around 1,000km (620 miles) to the east.

The conflict has essentially divided Sudan in two, with the army holding sway in the north and east, while the RSF controls most of Darfur and parts of the south.

The war has killed tens of thousands, uprooted more than 12 million and created what the United Nations has described as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Zamzam and Abu Shouk are among five areas in Sudan where famine was detected by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, IPC, a global hunger monitoring group.

An estimated 25 million people – half of Sudan’s population – are now facing extreme hunger.

Minority blasts COCOBOD over failure to raise Cocoa Producer Price

0

The Minority Caucus has called on the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) and the NDC government to stop making excuses and urgently increase the producer price of cocoa.

This follows COCOBOD’s announcement on April 9, 2025, that cocoa prices would remain unchanged for the 2025/2026 season.

Speaking at a press conference held in Kumasi on Monday, April 14, 2025, the Minority Caucus’ Spokesperson and Member of Parliament for Offinso South Constituency, Isaac Yaw Opoku, expressed deep disappointment in the decision, describing it as a major setback for hardworking cocoa farmers across the country.

“We have called you here to express our concerns about our government’s failure to adjust the producer price of cocoa. As you may be aware, on the 8th of April 2025, Ghana COCOBOD issued a letter titled Cocoa Price Adjustment for the 2025/2026 Cocoa Season,” he said.

He further highlighted the confusion created by COCOBOD’s communications, “Another release was issued by the Public Affairs Department of the same COCOBOD, titled ‘Public Should Disregard Any Statement Suggesting a Producer Price Announcement, ’and they also gave two different reasons as to why they cannot adjust the producer price.”

He  emphasized the Minority’s dissatisfaction, stating, “We are shocked and highly disappointed by the two releases, which both point to one fact: the COCOBOD and, for that matter, the NDC government will not increase the producer price of cocoa for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.”

National committee inaugurated to tackle child labour in Ghana’s tree crops sector

0

A multi-stakeholder committee has been inaugurated to coordinate national efforts aimed at eliminating child labour in Ghana’s tree crops sector.

Known as the Child Labour Implementation and Review Committee (CLIRC), the body was launched by the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA) under the Tree Crops Diversification Project, in collaboration with the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) and other key institutions.

The CLIRC brings together representatives from several ministries and agencies, including Mrs. Florence Quartey (Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection), Mrs. Esther Ofori Agyeman (Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations), Mrs. Freda Faah (Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development), Mr. Brian Tsikpor (Office of the Head of Local Government Service), Mr. Andrews Tagoe (General Agricultural Workers’ Union), and Mr. Shaibu Muniru (Ministry of Food and Agriculture).

Specialists from the TCDA on the committee include Dr. Rita Owusu Amankwah (Social Development Specialist), Ms. Annabelle Pwalia (Gender Specialist), and Mr. Kingsley Agyeman (Environmental Specialist). COCOBOD is also represented by its Social Development Specialist, Gender Specialist, Environmental Specialist, and a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer.

According to Dr. Andy Osei Okrah, Chief Executive Officer of the TCDA, the CLIRC will act as the central coordinating body to spearhead efforts in public education, stakeholder engagement, policy alignment, and the implementation of sustainable interventions.

“Combating child labour requires a collective effort. The CLIRC is not just a formality—it is a strategic engine to drive real, lasting change for vulnerable children. We must work together to secure a safe, dignified, and productive future for every child in Ghana’s agricultural value chain,” he said.

The committee’s formation is a response to worrying data from the International Labour Organization (ILO), which shows that more than 20% of children aged 5 to 14 and nearly 24 per cent of those aged 15 to 17 in Ghana are engaged in child labour, especially in agriculture.

The committee will operate in five priority regions—Bono, Bono East, Western North, Eastern, and Savannah—covering 11 high-risk districts. It has been tasked with monitoring child labour trends, coordinating public education campaigns, aligning national policies with international standards, and implementing practical interventions to protect children.

Dr. Rita Owusu Amankwah, Social Development Specialist at TCDA, stressed the importance of community involvement.

“We’re forging strong collaborations with municipal authorities, civil society groups, and community leaders. Public education, stakeholder commitment, and consistent engagement are at the heart of the CLIRC’s strategy,” she stated.

COCOBOD’s Sena Yawa Tabbicca, also a social development expert, praised the initiative, saying: “This committee couldn’t have come at a better time. The protection of children must be central to Ghana’s agricultural future, and this is a significant leap toward that goal.”

The CLIRC will also support farmer training programmes, facilitate school enrolment campaigns, and promote social protection schemes targeting vulnerable families. It is also expected to advise on child-friendly agricultural practices and act as a watchdog for child welfare across the sector.

The launch is seen as a step forward in Ghana’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 8.7, which calls for the end of child labour in all its forms.

Minority donates GHS200K, demands urgent govt intervention

0

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called on the government to expedite efforts to reconstruct the Adum Market, which was recently gutted by fire.

According to the Minority, the incident has severely affected the livelihoods of the traders, necessitating urgent government intervention.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Friday, March 21, destroyed several shops and goods worth millions of Ghana cedis, leaving many traders devastated.

The caucus, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, visited the affected traders on Monday, April 14, and donated 200,000 GHS to support them.

They also appealed to the government to release funds from the Contingency Fund to aid the victims.

While empathizing with the traders, Afenyo-Markin assured that the Minority would raise the matter on the floor of Parliament and push for the necessary support to help the traders rebuild their lives.

“I take this opportunity to make a humble plea to the government of Ghana, that looking at the situation we find here, obviously the traders are suffering. We know the commitment the government made in some other areas.

“We urge the government to take funds from the contingency funds and immediately and without delay come to the rescue of the suffering traders of Adum. I believe that within a year, if the government is committed to constructing the market, the government will be able to do it,” he assured.

GoldBod revokes all PMMC ASM licences

0

In a decisive move to tighten oversight of Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) gold trade, the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has announced that all existing gold trading licenses issued by the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) or the Minister for Mines—except those held by large-scale mining companies—are no longer valid.

This new directive is grounded in the Ghana Gold Board Act (Act 1140), passed by Parliament on March 29 and assented to by the President on April 2, 2025.

With immediate effect, GoldBod becomes the sole legal buyer, seller, assayer, and exporter of all gold produced by licensed ASM operators in Ghana—a sweeping reform aimed at curbing smuggling, streamlining trade, and ensuring full state oversight of the ASM sector.

“No person other than the Ghana Gold Board is permitted to export ASM gold from Ghana,” the statement emphasized.

To avoid operational disruptions, GoldBod has provided a transitional grace period. Individuals or companies holding licenses from the PMMC or the Minister may continue their operations until April 30, 2025. However, starting May 1, dealing in gold without a GoldBod-issued license will be considered a punishable offense.

In a move to assert monetary control and localize transactions, the statement further instructed all licensed local gold buyers to trade exclusively in Ghana cedis, using exchange rates referenced on the Bank of Ghana’s website.

Additionally, in a landmark shift, foreign nationals have been directed to exit the local ASM gold trading market by April 30, 2025. While foreigners may still apply to GoldBod to purchase gold directly, they will no longer be permitted to operate independently within the local ASM trade.

“It is worthy of note that it shall constitute a punishable offense for a person to purchase or deal in gold in the country without a license issued by the Ghana Gold Board, effective 1st May, 2025,” the statement added.

Ghanaians and fully Ghanaian-owned companies interested in entering the sector can apply for new licenses beginning April 22, 2025, either online or in person at the GoldBod Licensing and Regulations office in Accra.

This major regulatory overhaul is expected to enhance transparency, remove illicit actors, and boost government revenue from Ghana’s vibrant ASM gold sector, which accounts for over 30% of the nation’s gold output.

Government initiates comprehensive review of VAT regime – Dr Ato Forson

0

Government has officially commenced a comprehensive review of its Value Added Tax (VAT) regime, aiming to simplify the system and improve the business environment across the country.

This development was confirmed during a high-level meeting between Ghanaian officials and Wencai Zhang, Managing Director and Chief Administrative Officer of the World Bank Group.

During the engagement, Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, outlined the country’s commitment to reforming the VAT system in close collaboration with international partners.

Dr. Forson noted that a Technical Assistance Mission from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is currently in Ghana, working alongside local authorities to support the review process.

He acknowledged that the current effective VAT rate of 21.9%, one of the highest in Africa, has contributed to compliance difficulties and inefficiencies for businesses.

“We are fully aware of the challenges posed by the existing VAT structure,” Dr. Forson said.

“That is why we are undertaking a complete overhaul of the system. I can assure our partners and the Ghanaian public that this reform process will be concluded before the main budget is presented in November.”

The initiative is seen as a crucial step in improving tax compliance, enhancing revenue mobilization, and making the tax system more business-friendly.

The World Bank expressed support for Ghana’s reform efforts and reiterated its commitment to working closely with the government to achieve a more efficient and equitable tax regime.

NDC party executives in Asante Mampong have apologised over anti-Ashanti remarks NDC party executives in Asante Mampong have apologised over anti-Ashanti remarks

The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Asante Mampong has formally extended an apology to the Mampong Traditional Council and the Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, in response to anti-Ashanti comments made by some members of the party’s youth wing.

This gesture follows a 24-hour ultimatum issued by the Mamponghene, demanding a retraction of the offensive remarks, which were made during a campaign opposing the potential nomination of Esther Dwomoh, an Ashanti, by former President John Dramani Mahama for the position of Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) in the area.

In response to the incident, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II strongly condemned the actions of the individuals involved, warning that appropriate measures would be taken against them for their derogatory remarks.

“Advise those in the NDC who put up the despicable act. They have until tomorrow afternoon… If not, we shall shake things up for them to know that we wield the power and the entire jurisdiction,” Daasebre Osei Bonsu fumed.

In line with this, party executives have expressed deep remorse over the incident, clarifying that the remarks made were not intentional and do not reflect the values or stance of the party.

“A few days ago, some remarks made by members of our party caused disgrace and embarrassment to the Asante Mampong Traditional Council and the Mamponghene. As party leaders, we have reflected on our actions and wrongdoings and wish to render an apology to the Traditional Council, the people of Asanteman, Mampong, and all Ghanaians,” one of the party executives said in a video sighted by GhanaWeb.

The NDC stated that they have taken time to reflect on their actions and fully acknowledge the wrongdoing, recognising how the remarks could potentially disrupt the longstanding peaceful coexistence between the Traditional Council and political parties in the region.

They have therefore called for calm among all factions.

“In the video in question, while our conversations had a particular intent, certain statements made were inappropriate and unfortunate, leading to the current backlash. The individuals who made those remarks are members of the party and have since expressed their remorse and apologised,” the party stated.

The executive added, “We ask for calm, as we are all peace-loving citizens. The people of Asante Mampong have consistently demonstrated tolerance and goodwill towards all political parties, and we cherish that spirit of unity. We respectfully urge that the peaceful coexistence among all parties be maintained for the continued harmony and development of our community.”

Reactions as Chinese manufacturers reveal they produce most luxury brands

0

Chinese manufacturers have flooded social media with videos and evidence claiming they are behind the production of most luxury brands sold in the U.S. and other parts of the world.

From popular brands like Hermès, Nike, Louis Vuitton, and Adidas, the manufacturers assert that these items are manufactured and assembled in China.

According to them, luxury brands simply add their logos to the products and determine the price, while the actual manufacturing takes place in China.

Social media users have expressed shock and disbelief following these revelations, which come amid the ongoing trade war between China and the U.S., where both countries are going “band for band” with the imposition of tariffs.

So far, the two countries have imposed more than 100% tariffs on imports from each other.

While some users believe the videos are part of a trade gimmick, others are convinced that China is indeed behind the production of many global luxury brands.

They argue that the only distinctive feature is the logo placed on items like bags, shoes, and clothing.

However, some users remain skeptical, arguing that despite China’s ability to replicate luxury brands, there is still a noticeable difference in the quality of the original goods.

Watch how Neymar made his long-awaited return to Brasileirão action after 12 years

0

Neymar is a player of Santos Neymar is a player of Santos

Neymar made his return from injury on Sunday, April 13, 2025, against Fluminense, playing in his first Brasileirão match since 2013.

The former Barcelona forward returned to his boyhood club, Santos, in the summer of 2025 after leaving Al Hilal in 2024. Neymar had initially left Santos for Spain in 2013.

Although he featured and scored for Santos in the Paulista playoffs, a late-season injury and the conclusion of the Brazilian league delayed his much-anticipated second debut in the competition where he first rose to stardom.

The long-awaited moment finally arrived when Neymar was named on the substitutes’ list for Santos’ third Brasileirão game of the 2025 season against Fluminense.

Neymar’s last appearance in the Brasileirão was in 2013, during the early stages of his illustrious career.

With Santos chasing their first win in the Brasileirão, head coach Pedro Caixinha decided to bring on Neymar for his second debut in the league.

However, the 33-year-old failed to make a significant impact on the game, as Samuel Xavier struck late in stoppage time to secure the victory for Fluminense.

The win elevated the 2012 champions to fifth on the league table, while Santos remains in the relegation zone with just one point from three games.

For Neymar, the return also offered a special opportunity to reunite with his longtime teammate, Thiago Silva, who captained Fluminense. The two had previously played together for Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain.

Casablanca’s Mohammed V Sports Complex Gets Facelift

0

Casablanca’s Mohammed V Sports Complex, which has undergone a facelift following a major redevelopment project, reopened its doors Saturday evening for the derby between Wydad and Raja, as part of Matchday 26 of the Botola Pro D1 “Inwi” football league.

The redevelopment project for this legendary stadium in the economic capital is part of the stadium upgrade programme in preparation for hosting upcoming major sporting events, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2030 World Cup.

The work, which began in March 2024 and was completed in March 2025, consisted, according to data from the National Agency for Public Equipment (ANEP), of replacing the 45,000 seats in this national football temple, upgrading the press box, the sound system, video surveillance, and access control.

It also included the development of four changing rooms and warm-up rooms, the creation of the mixed zone and the new central tunnel for players, the replacement of the pitch (with a latest-generation hybrid pitch), the renovation of the athletics track, the upgrading of the lighting, and the replacement of the advertising screens.

The work also included the construction of a building to regulate and completely separate the various traffic flows, the development of a new access ramp for players’ buses, the VIP and VVIP parking, and the TV compound.

It also included the development of the VIP and media lounges, the construction of the new conference room, the creation of dressing rooms, the upgrading of restrooms, refreshment areas, and public infirmaries, in addition to increasing the number of gates and access control.

Outside the stadium, the work consisted of resurfacing the sidewalks and green spaces, upgrading the exterior lighting, repairing the fencing, and upgrading the annex.

TESCON is NPP’s powerhouse but has been left in the shadows

0

Dr Edwin Alfred Nii Obodai Provencal, former BOST Managing Director Dr Edwin Alfred Nii Obodai Provencal, former BOST Managing Director

The former Managing Director of Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST), Dr Edwin Alfred Nii Obodai Provencal has asked the opposition New Patriotic Party to value their Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) and their contributions to the party’s development.

He noted that TESCON has over the years not been given the attention and support it needs, therefore calling on the leadership of the New Patriotic Party to review their approach towards this students’ wing.

“TESCON has long been the NPP’s ideological breeding ground and grassroots machinery, mobilizing students, dominating digital spaces and invigorating rallies often with little to no financial support. Its members don’t just talk politics; they live it. But when the campaign season ends and decisions are made behind closed doors, they are routinely left out of the room”, he expressed in a statement while addressing some TESCON members during their handing over ceremony held at the Valley View University.

Read statement below:

TESCON: The Party’s Powerhouse Left In The Shadows – Dr. Edwin Obodai Provencal

In Ghana’s political theatre, few youth movements have commanded the energy and influence of the Tertiary Students Confederacy of the New Patriotic Party (TESCON) but beneath the slogans, cheers and glowing tributes lies a quiet frustration, one that threatens the very foundation of the party’s youthful engine.

At a recent TESCON General Meeting, Freshers Orientation and Handing-Over ceremony at Valley View University, Dr. Edwin Obodai Provencal, former Managing Director of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST), laid bare the paradox that defines TESCON’s reality. In his stirring keynote, he praised the organization’s spirit but also exposed a hard truth: the youth wing celebrated in public is often sidelined in private.

TESCON has long been the NPP’s ideological breeding ground and grassroots machinery, mobilizing students, dominating digital spaces and invigorating rallies often with little to no financial support. Its members don’t just talk politics; they live it. But when the campaign season ends and decisions are made behind closed doors, they are routinely left out of the room.

Dr. Provencal’s address echoed the sentiments reverberating among the youthful audience. Their commitment is unquestionable. Their energy, unmatched. But the lack of institutional support, limited mentorship, and absence in strategic roles cast a long shadow over their efforts. Many feel reduced to spectators in a game they help win; acknowledged at rallies, ignored in policy.

The contrast is stark: public praise and photo ops versus private exclusion and missed opportunities. TESCON, the supposed incubator for the NPP’s future leaders, is too often relegated to a ceremonial role instead of a consultative one.

As youthful activism becomes a central force in shaping Ghana’s political future, the NPP must recognize the strategic value TESCON brings beyond the campaign trail. This generation is not just seeking visibility; they’re demanding a seat at the table.

If the party fails to bridge the gap between rhetoric and reality, it risks alienating the very base that has carried its message into lecture halls, dormitories, and digital battlefields. Now is the time for the NPP to align its praise with policy — or risk losing TESCON’s loyalty to disillusionment.

Group accuses President Mahama of sidelining party stalwarts in appointments

0

The Volta Renaissance Forum has criticised the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for sidelining known party executives and financiers in recent appointments made by President John Dramani Mahama.

In a petition sighted by GhanaWeb on Monday, April 14, 2025, the forum expressed concerns about the appointments, noting that most of the individuals selected are not actively involved in the region’s political landscape.

“Most of the appointees, especially CEOs/Deputy CEOs, may hail from the Volta Region by lineage, but the majority are not everyday Volta politicians who understand the political chemistry or dynamics of the region, including the needs of the grassroots. About 85% of these appointees do not vote in the region, and the welfare of constituents is not their priority, as they lack political connections,” the petition read.

The forum described the appointment of what it called “foreign Voltarians” at the expense of dedicated party loyalists as a betrayal of trust.

“Appointing foreign Voltarians over true Volta politicians, despite their tireless efforts to win power, is, in our view, the highest form of betrayal. We understand that not all Volta politicians can be appointed at once, and no appointment can satisfy everyone, but this neglect is alarming.”

It further warned that the situation could escalate tensions in the region.

“The party base in the Volta Region is becoming increasingly agitated by the day, as they await the appointment of individuals who have served the party with dedication. Meanwhile, known NPP members are either being retained or newly appointed in a government that was won through the toil of NDC members.”

The forum also claimed that some of the new appointees are not accountable to regional party leadership and are not committed to securing future electoral victories.

“Some of the new appointees, by virtue of not being true Volta politicians, are not accountable to the party leadership in the region. They are not committed to consolidating power ahead of the 2028 elections.”

The group called on President Mahama to urgently address the situation by involving prominent NDC stalwarts in the region.

“We demand immediate action to address the neglect of prominent Volta politicians, including offering them opportunities to serve in the new NDC government they helped secure. We also call for open dialogue sessions across constituencies to engage the grassroots, especially polling agents, on the government’s and party’s shared development plans.”

The forum concluded with a warning, “We are giving a one-month ultimatum for party leadership to intervene. Failure to act will compel us to reconsider our support for the party.”

Read the petition below:

Petition by Volta Rennaissance Forum

1. That having taken note of the hue and cry of citizens of the Volta region especially NDC grassroot members on appointments neglect, the entire membership of the Volta Renaissance Forum, a pro-NDC interventionist group have resolved to petition as follows;

2. That we commend his Excellency President John Mahama for appointing some Voltarians into his government as Ministers and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of state agencies.

3. That most of the appointees especially CEOs/Deputy CEOs do hail from Volta Region by lineage, but majority are NOT the everyday Volta politician who understands the political chemistry or dynamics of the region including the needs of the grassroots.

4. That 85% of the said appointees do not vote in the region and that the welfare of constituents are not their priority because there is no political connections.

5. That appointing foreign Voltarians at the expense of true Volta politicians despite their tireless efforts to win power is the highest degree of betrayal of trust in our view;

6. That we are very much aware that all Volta politicians cannot be appointed at the same time and the appointments certainly cannot satisfy everyone. However, there are key stalwarts and activists including Daniel Agboka-Dzegede, Mathias Alagbo (Kabila), Francis Senanu Dekutse, Enyonam Apetorgbor, Prosper Kwame Ofosu, Jocelyn Tetteh, Francis Seglah (Don Shakas) Elsie Appau (Esq), Lawyer Afi Fiakpoe, William Kpormatsi, Johnson Samlafo, Bill Boglo, Yao Amekor, Fogah Nukunu, among others should not be violently excluded from the new government.

7. That the base of the party in the Volta region is becoming very agitated every passing day without hearing the appointment of some of the above individuals. Yet, known NPP members are either retained or appointed to serve in the new government formed through the toil of NDC members.

8. That some of the new appointees by virtue of them not being volta politicians are not accountable to the party leadership in the region. They are not committed in consolidating power ahead of 2028 elections;

9. That some of the appointees all of a sudden have become friends to the NPP and denying NDC members job opportunities.

10. That urgent action is taken to address the neglect concern of predominant Volta politicians including providing them with opportunities to serve in the new NDC government they fought fiercely for;

11. That open dialogue sessions be organized across constituencies to engage grassroots especially polling agents on government and party’s plan for their shared growth.

12. That one-month ultimatum is hereby given to allow leadership to intervene failure to which we shall advise ourselves against the party;

13. That this petition, which reflects the views of thousands of NDC supporters in the Volta region has been necessitated by the neglect of hard-working Volta politicians in the appointments. Redress will go a long way to motivate the base of the NDC in the Volta Region to continue being loyal to the NDC.

Notable projects include partnerships with Consolidated Bank Ghana, Access Bank Ghana PLC, Tema LNG Terminal, and Marriott Hotel.

Govt rejects Gold Fields’ Damang lease extension, orders shutdown by April 18

0

The Government has rejected Gold Fields’ application to extend its Damang Main Mining Lease, instructing the company to cease operations and vacate the site by April 18, 2025.

The decision, communicated by the Minerals Commission, has cast uncertainty over the future of one of the country’s key gold mining operations.

Gold Fields, a leading global gold producer, disclosed that the lease extension request was submitted in December 2024.

Despite what it describes as “extensive engagement” with authorities and full compliance with all statutory requirements, the company says it was notified of the rejection and is now preparing to shut down operations at Damang.

Although the company is working to safely wind down activities, the sudden closure could result in significant job losses and economic disruptions for surrounding communities that depend on the mine.

Industry watchers warn the decision could dampen investor confidence in Ghana’s mining sector.

Meanwhile, Gold Fields says it remains in ongoing discussions with the government to find a mutually beneficial path forward.

“The Company continues to seek ongoing engagement with the Government to secure the best outcome for all stakeholders,” it said in a statement.

‘We will show our power’

The Ashanti Mampong Traditional Council led by the Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, has given leadership of the National Democratic Congress in the Mampong Constituency less than 24 hours to retract their anti-Ashanti comments made by some youth of the party.

Addressing the NDC leadership of the constituency at his palace on Sunday, April 13, 2025, when they called on him, Mamponghene condemned the actions of the party supporters who have waged an open campaign against the possible nomination of an Ashanti for the Mampong Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) position.

“Advise those in the NDC who put up the despicable act. They have until tomorrow afternoon… If not, we shall shake things up for them to know that we wield the power and the entire jurisdiction,” Daasebre Osei Bonsu fumed.

He acknowledged the tolerant and welcoming nature of Ashantis to diversity, stating that Ashanti remains the only area in Ghana where other tribes are allowed to install their own chiefs.

“Because of my work at the university, I have travelled a lot. There is no place you mention that I don’t know of. But our place is the only place where you find Sarkin Zongo, Ewe Chiefs, and whatnot… You are all Mampong people. We respect and treat everyone as equal, so why are some people trying to cause division among us?” he questioned.

The reaction by the Mamponghene is in response to the actions of some NDC youth who have been campaigning against the possible nomination of an Ashanti by President John Dramani Mahama for the MCE position in the area.

Last week, NDC youth in Asante Mampong Constituency protested the rumoured nomination of Esther Dwomoh as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

The youth, favouring three shortlisted candidates—Yakubu Issifu (2024 Parliamentary Candidate), Mohammed Kamil (Constituency Chairman), and Imoro Iddrisu—stormed the party office on April 9 and 10, vandalizing property and setting items ablaze.

They argued the shortlisted trio, long-time party loyalists, deserved the role over Dwomoh, an NDC stalwart.

The group stated that “no Ashanti will be allowed to become MCE of Mampong,” a statement that has been heavily condemned as anti-Ashanti and disrespectful to the owners of Mampong land.

Meanwhile, the NDC constituency leadership has apologized, condemned the violence and called on their supporters to remain calm while awaiting President Mahama’s final decision.

The Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, attended each of the assemblies, urging assembly members to vote responsibly in order to support the development of the region, according to a report on graphiconline.com.

He noted that development begins at the district level and encouraged members to put aside partisan considerations.

“Our region has a wealth of both natural and human resources that can contribute to the socio-economic development of the area, we must unite to make the Oti Region a winner.” he said.

Gyapong also described the Oti Region as a “baby” in terms of development and stressed the importance of collective effort for progress.

In his acceptance speech, Eric Kwaku Oppong, a 53-year-old administrator, expressed appreciation for the assembly members’ support.

He called on all stakeholders, including traditional authorities, to come together to address the challenges in the area and assured his full commitment to successful implementation of government programmes and policies.

What are semiconductors and why is Trump targeting them?

0

The tiny chips powering billions of electronic devices are central to the global economy The tiny chips powering billions of electronic devices are central to the global economy

President Donald Trump is expected to unveil more sweeping tariffs on US imports – this time targeting semiconductors.

The tiny chips powering billions of electronic devices are central to the global economy.

What is a semiconductor and how are they used?

Semiconductors, also sometimes referred to as microchips or integrated circuits, are made from tiny fragments of raw materials, such as silicon.

They are altered through a process called doping in order to sometimes conduct electricity and sometimes not. This allows them to be used as electronic switches, speaking the binary language of 0s and 1s that underpins computing.

Semiconductors are used in devices such as smartphones and laptops, as well as in vehicles with electronic control systems, remote car keys and sensors.

They are also in routers, switches, and communication infrastructures that form the backbone of the internet, enabling global connectivity.

When it comes to sustainability, they can be found in wind turbines and solar farms.

In healthcare, they are in medical devices and equipment as well as implantable technology, like pacemakers and insulin pumps.

Who makes them?

The UK, the US, Europe and China rely heavily on Taiwan for semiconductors.

The country’s Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) provides over half of the world’s supply.

Among its customers are tech giants such as Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft.

As a result, TSMC has been caught up in so-called “chip wars” between the US and China.

Why does Trump want tariffs on semiconductors?

One of the main aims of President Trump’s “reciprocal” tariffs introduced in his second term has been to encourage firms to manufacture more products in the US.

On Friday, the White House exempted smartphones, computers and some other electronic devices from tariffs, including the 125% levies imposed on Chinese imports.

But that may be set to change, as Trump told reporters on Air Force One he would soon be announcing tariff rates for imported semiconductors.

“We want to make our chips and semiconductors and other things in our country,” he said.

The president and members of his administration have also cited national security concerns about microchips being produced or sourced from elsewhere – saying this would be explored in an upcoming probe.

“We are taking a look at semiconductors and the whole electronics supply chain in the upcoming National Security Tariff Investigations,” Trump wrote on his platform Truth Social on 13 April.

He added that the US would not be “held hostage” by other countries such as China.

How could the US make more semiconductors?

The US has spent colossal sums of money in recent years to try and boost technology manufacturing on its shores.

Some companies, such as TSMC, have already boosted their US presence in response to previous legislation under the previous administration.

The US Chips Act incentivised firms to move chips manufacturing in the US in return for funding awards.

The US government committed $6.6bn (£5bn) in awards to TSMC after it built a factory in Arizona.

But production at the site has previously faced delays due to a shortage of skilled workers – something that may present a wider challenge to increasing US-based semiconductor manufacturing.

TSMC reportedly only resolved its staff shortage by bringing thousands of workers over from Taiwan.

Gov’t urged to support fire victims through the Contingency Fund

0

By Muyid Deen Suleman

Kumasi April 14, GNA – The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called on the government to use part of the Contingency Fund to support market fire victims to get back to their businesses.

Mr Alexander Kwamena Afenyo Markins, the Minority Leader, made the call during a visit by the Caucus to the Adum Blue Light fire disaster scene, where they sympathized with the affected traders.

He pointed out that the extent of destruction and the impact of the devastation needed urgent support from the government and the Contingency Fund was readily available for such eventualities.

Mr Afenyo Markins said though the NPP leadership had already visited the traders, the Minority deemed it right to also visit and sympathize with them and rise solidly behind them in times of such horrific experience.

The Minority Caucus announced a donation of GHC 200,000.00 to support the reconstruction of the traders’ stores.

Mr Afenyo Markins assured the traders that the Minority remained steadfast in their commitment to safeguard their interests and to provide them with opportunities to rebuild their enterprises independently.

The members were accompanied some national executives of the NPP and some Ashanti regional officials.

Weija Assembly takes precautionary steps ahead of dam spillage

0

The Weija Municipal Assembly says it is putting measures in place to protect lives and property ahead of the anticipated spillage of the Weija Dam.

In an interview with Citi News, Municipal Director Bernard Mats Yingura revealed that a stakeholder meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday to outline the necessary plans and preparations.

He noted that while the spillage is expected to be controlled, residents living in communities near the dam must remain vigilant to avoid any potential damage.

“I know that this is a planned spillage—not one that will take Ghana Water Limited by surprise. Certainly, this should be a controlled one so that they get the level they want, so that it won’t necessarily have any adverse impact on other settlements,” he said.

Yingura advised residents and those whose activities take place near the dam to exercise caution.

“They should be cautious within the moment, and people whose activity takes place in areas where the water could affect should be able to stay away—especially those who work at the banks of the river. They don’t have to be taken by surprise.”

He added that community engagement efforts would follow the stakeholder meeting to ensure everyone is informed.

“I know that after the stakeholders meeting, some engagements will go on. Because people are farming or canoeing on the river without knowing that the tides are coming. The timetable should come out fast, and the date for opening the dam should be announced by vans to make people aware,” he stated.

$150 million and GH¢10 million required to win elections in Ghana

0

A report by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has revealed that securing victory in both presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana requires an estimated amount of $150 million, along with an additional GH¢10 million.

The report highlights the growing monetisation of democracy in the country and its detrimental impact on the fight against corruption and the promotion of accountability.

According to myjoyonline.com, Kojo Asante, Director of Programs at CDD-Ghana, made these remarks during a recent presentation before the Constitutional Review Committee.

“We must begin electing leaders with integrity and orienting them towards the public interest, as this focus on public welfare also drives development,” he stated.

“There must be clear provisions for disqualifying candidates who breach regulations, as well as mandatory asset declarations for those running for office. We also need to address the oversight of political parties themselves, which ultimately falls under the Electoral Commission,” he added.

African social movements push for “borderless” Africa to ease movement

0

By Edward Acquah

Accra, April 14, GNA – African social movements dedicated to the unification of Africa have called for the implementation of policies supporting free movement and continental integration.

The movements said the creation of a borderless Africa would remove trade barriers, facilitate the free flow of goods and services, and enable the free movement of people across the continent.

They made the call at the opening of the 3rd African Social Movements Baraza (conference) in Accra on Monday.

The three-day event assembled leaders and members of social movements from across Africa to foster solidarity, collaboration, and joint actions and strengthen the African social movements network.

The event, organised by the TrustAfrica in partnership with Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), also identified common challenges and explored collective solutions.

Among the topics discussed by the participants included movement organising strategies, funding approaches, and building solidarity to address the pressing issues.

African social movements are grassroots organisations and collective actions that aim to promote social justice, human rights, and community development in Africa.

Mr Ebrima Sall, the Executive Director of TrustAfrica, told journalists that it was difficult for Africans to travel within Africa, undermining the free flow of goods and people.

He called for the implementation of policies and agreements that would make mobility possible for purposes of work, study, and living conditions.

“We should make it easy for Africans to connect with other Africans across the continent. Even if you have to ask for a visa, make it easy for people to be able to obtain a visa when they come on.” Mr Sall said.

He also appealed to governments to listen to the messages delivered by social movements, support their work, and be more engaging to help find solutions to issues that affected the welfare of the people.

Madam Vera Abena Addo, Programmes Officer at CDD-Ghana, said social movements played significant roles in promoting good governance and democracy and thus the need to support their survival.

She called for more collaboration between social movements and think tanks to advocate for better conditions for the people of Africa among other political, social, and economic interventions.

“It is important that organisations like CDD, which is well established and has been doing this work for some time, needs to work with social movements.” Madam Addo said.

National Service Staff Warn Foot Soldiers

0

Ayirebi Adubofour

The staff of the National Service Authority (NSA) have strongly condemned the practice of political party foot soldiers attempting to hijack the National Service Authority.

In a release signed by the Chairman of the National Service Authority Staff Union (NASASU), Ayirebi Adubofour, they stated that “this phenomenon undermines the principle of democracy, erodes public trust, and compromises the integrity of our institutions.”

Continuing, they said, “We wish to reiterate, to the general public that, the National Service Authority is a public institution under the Public Services Commission. Our recruitments and transfers are done in line with our approved Scheme of Service, and in accordance with the Public Services Commission Act and the

provisions of the Constitution under Article 195.”

They have especially called on the youth of Western Region to exercise restraint and allow the Management of the Authority to function as defined by the laws and statutes.

“We are equally calling on Management to adhere to the guiding principles and protect the integrity of the Authority.

“We call on the government to ensure that state institutions like the National Service Authority be protected from political interference,” they demanded.

To the political parties, they have advised them to refrain from using the National Service Authority as tool for advancing party interests, and to respect the independence of the Authority, adding that National Service Authority internal transfers and recruitments is not at the mercy of any other group or individual’s call but as enshrined in the National Service Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1119), the Public Services Commission Act, 1994 (Act 482) and Article 195 of the Constitution.

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has revealed that the government will disburse $1 million to support over 1,500 peasant farmers in Northern Ghana, as part of the Feed Ghana Project aimed at boosting vegetable production.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, April 14, 2025, Mr. Opoku said the initiative is focused on empowering grassroots farmers, particularly those already engaged in the cultivation of tomatoes and other vegetables.

“We are dealing with the peasant farmers because they are on the field and are registered. Some are already into tomato production. So, it is just a matter of our team identifying them and giving them the logistics they require,” he stated.

According to the Minister, the financial aid is crucial because many of these small-scale farmers lack the capital needed to expand their operations.

The official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Apex Bank to facilitate the disbursement is scheduled for Wednesday, April 16, 2025.

“I will engage the media because I will sign an MoU with the Apex Bank for the distribution of $1 million to over 1,500 peasant farmers in the Northern part of the country for the production of vegetables. This is just the beginning,” Mr. Opoku added.

In addition to financial support, the government is also providing technical assistance, including the supply of improved seeds and farming inputs designed to enhance productivity and support year-round cultivation.

“Our technical team has come up with the best quality, and we are supplying that to our farmers. I have been to the field and I can tell you—we have the technical know-how to surpass what Burkina Faso is doing,” the Minister declared confidently.

The intervention is part of a broader strategy under the Planting for Food and Jobs Phase II, which aims to strengthen food security, reduce imports, and create sustainable livelihoods for smallholder farmers across the country.

BRUHM boosts presence in Ghana with community outreach and retail expansion

0

BRUHM, a leading home appliance brand, is reinforcing its presence in Ghana through direct community engagement, expanded retail channels, and promotional initiatives aimed at delivering enhanced value to consumers.

The brand began the year with a dynamic three-day roadshow across key commercial hubs in Accra, including Circle, Madina, Kasoa, and Accra Central. The outreach featured live cooking demonstrations using BRUHM gas cookers, food sampling, product displays, and interactions with local influencers.

“Our aim was to meet Ghanaians where they are and let them experience BRUHM products in real time. We’re focused on building trust and helping consumers make confident choices for their homes,” said Ms Awurakua Antwi, Brands Communication Manager for BRUHM Ghana.

The brand showcased its product range—spanning cooling, cooking, laundry, and entertainment appliances—designed with simplicity, functionality, and affordability in mind, qualities that have endeared BRUHM to households across the country.

In line with its retail expansion strategy, BRUHM has launched a Shop-in-Shop concept at the new Electromart outlet at Atomic Junction. The dedicated section provides customers with the opportunity to view the full range of BRUHM products in a single location. To mark the opening, Ghanaian music legend Reggie Rockstone was gifted a chest freezer during his visit to the store. He also endorsed the brand’s practical features and affordability.

BRUHM products are now available through major retail chains including Melcom, China Mall, Electromart, Super Save, and Kitchen & Beyond. The brand also maintains an online presence via Jumia and Electromart’s e-commerce platforms, ensuring nationwide accessibility.

To coincide with the Easter period, BRUHM has rolled out promotional offers for 2025, including bundled deals such as free fans with the purchase of air conditioners, available at Electromart outlets across the country.

“Buying BRUHM is not just a purchase—it’s a long-term investment in convenience and reliability,” Ms Antwi stated. “We are consistently listening to customers and adapting our offerings to suit their needs.”

The company has hinted at upcoming campaigns, retail collaborations, and product innovations tailored to the needs of Ghanaian households.

Some gospel artistes focus more on survival than ministry

0

Entertainment pundit, Arnold Asamoah Baidoo Entertainment pundit, Arnold Asamoah Baidoo

Entertainment pundit and media personality Arnold Asamoah Baidoo has stated that many gospel artistes in Ghana are more driven by the need to earn a living than by a genuine desire to spread the gospel.

Arnold made these comments while weighing in on the topic of spiritual attacks in the gospel music industry.

“Gospel music, for some, is a facade; they’re only in it because it feeds them, not necessarily to spread the gospel,” he stated on United Showbiz on April 12, 2025.

He pointed out that while many people assume gospel musicians are shielded from spiritual attacks due to their association with faith, the reality is quite the opposite.

“People don’t expect spiritual attacks in gospel music because it’s about God, but we forget these artistes are also vulnerable to emotions, temptations, and external influences,” he stated.

He also claimed that some preachers and gospel artistes have “backing from elsewhere”, implying possible spiritual or ulterior influences behind their work.

“So, hearing that spiritual attacks also happen in the gospel music industry is not surprising. They are also humans. There are many people singing gospel music or preaching in churches who have backing from somewhere else,” he said.

Over 20 ‘obnoxious’ taxes at the ports must go – Auto dealers to government

Vehicle buyers lament 'obnoxious' taxes at the ports Vehicle buyers lament ‘obnoxious’ taxes at the ports

The Vehicle and Assets Dealers Union of Ghana (VADUG) has expressed frustration over the numerous taxes vehicle dealers must pay at the ports to clear their goods.

According to the union, the taxes imposed on vehicle buyers are “unnecessary” and overly expensive.

These charges include Import Duty, Import VAT, the GHS Disinfection Fee, the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy, Vehicle Examination Fees, and the African Union Import Levy, among others.

The Executive Secretary of VADUG, Frank Atanley Kofigah, described the fees at the ports as “obnoxious.”

“If you’re a customer clearing a vehicle at the port, be prepared to pay over twenty different fees.

“When you go in there now, you have to deal with the GHS Disinfection Fee and the Special Import Levy. That 2% levy, what is it even for? It was introduced for a specific purpose. Is that purpose still relevant? We need to critically examine these charges,” he said, as quoted by citinewsroom.com.

VADUG emphasised the need for the government to fast-track the implementation of a comprehensive auto-financing policy that would allow banks and financial institutions to offer credit facilities to vehicle buyers.

They argued that, in addition to paying for insurance and freight costs, buyers are also required to pay taxes based on the vehicle’s original model year purchase price, regardless of when the vehicle was actually purchased.

Under Ghanaian law, vehicles older than five years attract an additional 50% penalty based on the original value, while brand-new vehicles under six months old are exempt from depreciation-related penalties.

The Executive Secretary also highlighted Ghana’s lack of a proper vehicle financing system.

“In other countries, if you’re employed, you can walk into a dealership with zero down payment and just a valid appointment letter and still drive away in a financed car. Why not here?” he questioned.

Some officials during the Flag Football Development Clinic Some officials during the Flag Football Development Clinic

The National Football League and the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) hosted a flag football coach education and officiating clinic in Accra, Ghana from April 11-13, 2025, as part of the strategy to accelerate the development and growth of the game across the continent.

The three-day flag football clinic welcomed coaches and officials from 10 African countries — Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia and Uganda — joined by leaders from the global flag community to support learning and education.

50 participants received both classroom and on-field learning, as the clinic looked to improve the skills of new and experienced coaches and officials — helping to promote and enable further long-term flag football engagement and participation across the continent.

Expert coaches delivering the sessions included:

Chris Curd: founder and commissioner of the Pittsburgh Flag Football League, with more than 16 years of experience in league operations.

Mike Daniels: accomplished football coach and NFL senior consultant for football development.

Fouzia Madhouni: head coach of Morocco’s Women’s Flag football team and NFL & IFAF Global Flag Ambassador.

Max von Garnier: German coach, leader of NFL Flag schools’ program in Germany and former NFL Europe player.

Cédric Castaing: international flag football referee and national coordinator for flag football officials in France.

The weekend’s activities were also supported by NFL Flag and IFAF coaches.

Fast-paced and accessible for all, flag football is spearheading extraordinary participation growth worldwide with more than 20 million players in 100 countries and women and girls driving some of the sports’ largest growth.

Since 2023 participation in flag football in Africa has surged, with Egypt and Nigeria seeing increases of 149% and 85% respectively. In Nigeria, the national federation’s outreach program has already engaged more than 13,000 young people highlighting the sport’s expanding reach and appeal.

“The NFL and IFAF are committed to continuing to develop and grow the game of flag football in Africa,” said Vice President, Flag Football at the NFL Stephanie Kwok.

“Creating meaningful educational pathways for coaches and officials delivering flag across Africa, is a critical part of the game at every level on the continent. The coach education and officiating clinic will create a powerful legacy for both the elite and grassroots levels of the game, as we build to the Los Angeles Olympics 2028 and beyond.”

“This clinic marks another crucial step in promoting the growth of flag football across Africa,” said IFAF Sport Manager Lars Carlsen. “By investing in the education and development of coaches and officials, we’re focused on developing strong local foundations that will support the game’s continued expansion.

“Working hand in hand with our partners at the NFL, IFAF is committed to empowering the next generation of coaches, officials and athletes, building a sustainable future for flag football across the region.”

Flag football will officially be included in the LA 2028 Olympic Games program, led by efforts of IFAF and supported by the NFL.

As part of the NFL Africa program, the NFL has undertaken NFL Flag development, talent identification camps and fan events across Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria since 2022.

Shut up and focus on your own constituency — Kwaku Atta Sarpong slams Owusu-Bempah

0

According to a report from GhanaWeb, Kwaku Atta Sarpong, the Deputy Organiser for the Ashanti Region of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has criticized Ernest Owusu-Bempah, the party’s Deputy Communications Officer, over his recent comments regarding the leadership for the 2028 presidential election.

In a statement seen by GhanaWeb, Atta Sarpong advised Owusu-Bempah to remain silent if he has no constructive input to offer about the party’s leadership plans for the upcoming election.

He accused Owusu-Bempah of creating division and irresponsibility within the party, alleging that his actions were partly responsible for the NPP’s loss of the Asante Akyem North parliamentary seat.

Atta Sarpong stated, “It has become necessary to respond to the recent comments by Ernest Owusu-Bempah concerning who should lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP). If Mr Bempah has nothing sensible or constructive to say on this matter, he must simply shut up.

“He should rather focus on his own constituency, Asante Akyem North (AAN), which he effectively dashed to an independent candidate, largely due to his divisive and reckless comments on radio in Agogo..”

The Deputy Organiser further emphasized that the NPP would not tolerate distractions from individuals who do not prioritize the party’s success.

He affirmed the NPP’s commitment to rebuilding, unifying, and preparing for a victorious 2028 election campaign, stressing that the party’s future would be shaped by loyal, competent, and dedicated members, not those who speak without substance.

Ernest Owusu-Bempah had recently suggested that the NPP should not retain Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate, for the 2028 election.

In an interview with Oyerepa FM on April 14, 2025, he criticized Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy, claiming it led to the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections.

He cited dissatisfaction among the grassroots, stating that many NPP supporters, including a taxi driver he met, abstained from voting due to discontent with the party’s choice of candidate.

Owusu-Bempah also expressed his belief that the NPP’s prospects in the 2028 election depend on figures such as former MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, and current MP for Abetifi, Bryan Acheampong.

Govt begins overhaul of VAT system to boost business climate

0

The Government of Ghana has officially commenced a comprehensive review of its Value Added Tax (VAT) regime, aiming to simplify the system and improve the business environment across the country.
