Federated Commodities issues first GHS72.5m Commercial Paper on GSE

0

Federated Commodities PLC (FEDCO), a leading indigenous cocoa buying company, has raised GHS 72.5 million in the first tranche of its GHS 200 million Commercial Paper programme.

This marks a historic first listing on the Ghana Fixed Income Market (GFIM) since the Commercial Paper Market’s launch by the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) in 2024.

At the listing ceremony, FEDCO’s Managing Director, Maria Adamu-Zibo, highlighted the company’s growth.

“From a 5.7% market share in 2017/2018, we now command a 10.5% share. International partner resource support has grown from 2.3% to 12% over the same period,” she noted.

She added that over 41,000 of the 70,000 farmers under its network now benefit from FEDCO’s sustainability initiatives, with the company’s initiatives further positively affecting over 400,000 lives nationwide.

“Our joint investments with partners amount to $20 million—over GHS 300 million—in cash and in-kind support for our sourcing communities,” she stated, adding that the company rose to become the third-largest Licensed Buying Company (LBC) in Ghana by the end of the 2021/2022 cocoa season.

The company is now expanding beyond cocoa into logistics, commodity trading, and food processing, with an 18,000-metric-ton rice mill in Kampung Dari and a food processing facility underway.

Adamu-Zibo described the capital raise as a “strategic leap” aimed at capitalising on rising food prices, expanding FEDCO’s impact, and delivering more value to farmers and stakeholders.

Commenting on the development, the Managing Director of the Ghana Stock Exchange, Abena Amoah, stated, “This landmark issuance underscores the effectiveness of the Commercial Paper Market in providing businesses with alternative short-term financing opportunities. We are excited to see the first corporate entity leverage this platform for their short-term capital needs and look forward to more corporate issuances in the coming months.”

She further noted that this successful issuance demonstrates the increasing confidence of corporate entities in Ghana’s capital markets and reinforces the GSE’s commitment to providing diversified financing solutions for businesses while offering investors good returns.

The Special Guest of Honour, John Awuah, in his address said, ’’This inaugural issuance serves as a critical test case, and honoring payment obligations will be essential in building and sustaining investor trust and confidence in similar instruments going forward.’’

‘’In his remarks, the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Ghana, Dr. James Klutse Avedzi, reaffirmed the regulator’s commitment to fostering Document Classification: Public market confidence, enforcing compliance, and strengthening collaborations with the GSE, Central Securities Depository (CSD), and market intermediaries.’’

The Commercial Paper Market offers a transparent platform for short-term financing. FEDCO’s listing is expected to pave the way for more corporate issuers to explore similar capital-raising avenues.

The transaction was facilitated by First Atlantic Bank Ghana, First Atlantic Brokers, Deloitte Ghana, G.A. Sarpong & Co, Glico General, GCB Bank PLC, the Central Securities Depository (CSD), and Beacon Ratings.

K’si Mayor’s Statement Affront To Democracy- Paul K. Yando

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Director of Communication, Paul Kwabena Yandoh, has urged the Mayor of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, alias King Zuba to withdraw his infamous comment, in which he publicly threatened to flog traders who defy his directive to vacate pavements in the Kumasi Central Business District (CBD).
He also implored him to apologise to Ghanaians and commit to upholding the Constitution and the oath of his office.
According to him, King Zuba’s comment is not only disturbing but also unethical, unconstitutional, and fundamentally contrary to the principles of democratic governance, human dignity, and the rule of law.
He added that Ghana is a constitutional democracy governed by laws; not by the whims of individuals in authority.
“The era of military brutality and command-and-control tactics belongs in the annals of history, not in the present-day democratic dispensation. The enforcement of laws, including those relating to street trading and urban order, must be carried out within the limits of the law and with full respect for the dignity of citizens,” he said these in a press release.
“The Mayor’s utterances and intended actions are in direct violation of multiple provisions of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, including; Article 15(1) & (2): “The dignity of all persons shall be inviolable. No person shall, whether or not he is arrested, restricted, or detained, be subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment.”
Article 21(1): “All persons shall have the right to freedom of movement and the right to practice any profession, trade or occupation within Ghana.”
Article 296: “Where in this Constitution or in any other law discretionary power is vested in any person or authority: (a) that discretionary power shall be exercised fairly and reasonably and without arbitrarines,” he said.
While strongly condemning the Mayor’s threats of violence, he equally acknowledged that the growing trend of pavement trading poses serious challenges to urban safety, pedestrian movement, and city sanitation.
He admitted that the use of walkways, pavements, and other unauthorized public spaces for trading activities is not only unlawful under local assembly by-laws but also undermines the vision of organised, accessible, and livable urban spaces.
“Street trading, especially when conducted in areas not demarcated for such purposes, disrupts traffic flow, endangers traders and commuters alike, and impedes the work of city authorities. It is, therefore, legitimate and necessary for the KMA to enforce its by-laws to restore order and protect public infrastructure,” he added.
This notwithstanding, he continued that such enforcement must be conducted in a lawful, respectful, and structured manner, guided by empathy and public engagement; not through threats of flogging or military-style aggression, explaining that traders must be educated on the laws governing urban space usage and offered decent alternatives, such as well-planned markets or designated trading zones.
Call to Action
The Ashanti Regional Communication Directorate called on the authority to publicly address this matter and issue a firm directive to all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) regarding the expected ethical and lawful conduct of their duties, educate and guide the KMA Mayor on the appropriate enforcement mechanisms under the law and also reinforce a zero-tolerance policy against threats, violence or abuse of power within all local government structures.
He stressed that the enforcement of laws must not come at the expense of basic human dignity, and believing in a Ghana where order is upheld through democratic principles, not fear; through lawful processes, not brute force.

The 3rd African Social Movement(ASM) BARAZA 2025, a three-day event brought together social movements, activists, civil society organization leaders, creatives, policymakers and passionate change-makers from across the continent to define and strategize on pressing social issues impacting Africa.

This year’s Baraza, themed, “The Power of Movements,” unites activists and change-makers to co-create solutions for Africa’s pressing challenges.

The event, co-hosted by the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-GHANA) in partnership with TrustAfrica, seeks to provide a platform to foster solidarity, collaboration, joint actions and strengthen the African social movements network.

It is also to foster conversations among African social movement leaders on the current global political moment and create common African movement positions on priority intersecting issues.

Executive Director of TrustAfrica, Ebraima Sall, advocated for a “Borderless Africa” initiative, promoting effortless mobility and connections among Africans across the continent. This vision includes ensuring minimum mobility standards for work purposes, study purposes and living conditions.

“By facilitating easy movement within Africa, the continent can unlock its full potential for collaboration, innovation, and progress,” he said.

He stressed that, streamlining visa processes is essential for a borderless Africa, facilitating movement for work, study, travel, and living purposes. By simplifying and expediting visa applications, Africans can enjoy unrestricted travel, enhanced collaboration, and increased economic opportunities.

“This, in turn, will foster greater unity, economic growth, and social exchange across the continent, ultimately promoting Africa’s development and progress,” he added.

Emphasising on the second key points, Mr. Sall stated that policymakers should consider the impact of economic policies on the rights and well-being of ordinary citizens, ensuring that their decisions promote inclusivity and fairness.

He reiterated that BARAZA serves as a catalyst for solidarity, collaborative innovation, and tangible solutions, while fostering a bridge between funders and social movements through open dialogue and trust-building initiatives.

Programs Officer, CDD-Ghana, Vera Abena Addo, said CDD-Ghana firmly believes in the transformative power of social movements to drive democratic renewal and promote good governance.

According to her, CDD-Ghana is an independent, not-for-profit research and advocacy think-to-do-tank dedicated to promoting democracy, good governance, and inclusive development. For over two decades, CDD-Ghana has focused on key areas such as, anti-corruption, elections, social accountability and security.

“Through research, policy engagement, and civic dialogue, CDD-Ghana aims to strengthen democratic institutions and promote inclusive growth in Ghana,” she emphasised.

Don’t tarnish Chief Justice’s image during removal process – Rev. Osabutey urges

0

Former Bishop of the Accra Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana, Rt. Rev. Samuel Kofi Osabutey, has urged caution in the ongoing efforts to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, warning that such actions could undermine the integrity of the judiciary.

Rev. Osabutey emphasized that while legal provisions allow for the removal of a Chief Justice, the process should be carried out with dignity and free from political influence.

“It should be in the law that the Chief Justice can be changed; however, the Chief Justice’s image shouldn’t be tarnished in the process. What is bothering the people is the politicisation of the office,” he stated.

He called for clearer legislation to safeguard the judiciary from political interference and ensure transparency in such sensitive matters.

His comments come after three separate petitions were submitted to President John Mahama, calling for the removal of Justice Torkornoo.

Four dead in cable car crash south of Naples

0

Four people have died after a mountain cable car cabin plunged to the ground near Naples in southern Italy, emergency services say.

Another person was “extremely seriously injured” in the crash at Mount Faito and was being airlifted to hospital, officials said.

Italian media outlets reported that one of the cables supporting a cabin higher up the mountain had snapped while the cable car was traversing the valley.

The president of the region, Vincenzo De Luca, said the victims were all tourists.

De Luca added that poor weather conditions including fog, wind and rain were making it difficult for rescue workers to reach the area where the cabin had crashed, at a high altitude.

Italian media had earlier on Thursday reported that the cable car line had come to a halt and more than a dozen people had been rescued from a second cabin which had stopped further down the valley.

Footage showed the passengers being winched out in harnesses.

The mayor of Castellammare di Stabia – where the cable car was located – said it was believed a traction cable had snapped.

“The emergency brake downstream worked but clearly not the one on the cabin that was about to reach the the top of the hill,” he told Italian media.

He added that there had been regular safety checks on the cable car line.

The company which runs the service, the EAV public transport firm, has described the crash as “a tragedy” on social media.

Adventist SHS student allegedly shot in the eye to be flown abroad for treatment

A second-year student of Adventist Senior High School in Bantama, located in the Ashanti Region, who sustained a gunshot injury to her eye, is expected to be flown abroad for treatment.

This update was shared by the Member of Parliament for Bantama, Francis Asenso-Boakye, on his Facebook page on Thursday, April 17, 2025.

“Following an extensive medical assessment, doctors have confirmed that Suzzy has suffered severe damage to her eyes. The family has expressed a desire to seek advanced treatment for her abroad.

“In support of this, I have been actively working with them to obtain the necessary travel documents, including her passport and visa. I have also engaged with the Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who has been incredibly responsive and has demonstrated a strong willingness to assist. He has requested certain supporting documents from the hospital, which I am currently working to provide,” he noted.

He also debunked rumours circulating on social media that he had neglected the student.

Asenso-Boakye clarified that a video of a woman accusing him of inaction was misleading.

“Regrettably, a video has surfaced on social media featuring a woman making claims that no assistance has been rendered to Suzzy and her family by me. I have since spoken with Suzzy’s brother, Clement, who has been my primary point of contact throughout this process. He informed me that the woman in question is not known to the family and expressed his concern over the misleading nature of her statements,” he added.

On Friday, April 4, 2025, during break time, the student sustained gunshot injuries when her classmate allegedly discharged a firearm, injuring her in the process.

Be ready to access markets by meeting required standards – Tanoh

Augustus 'Goosie' Tanoh, Presidential Advisor on 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Augustus ‘Goosie’ Tanoh, Presidential Advisor on 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development

The Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programmes, Augustus “Goosie” Tanoh, has urged Ghanaian exporters to prepare for international markets by meeting required standards.

Speaking at the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKGCC) Forum held at CalBank PLC’s Head Office on the theme “Ghana’s Proposed 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Policies,” Tanoh noted:

“The international market is becoming more constricted by the day. There is a net benefit for Ghana, and we can take advantage of that, but how long that window of opportunity will remain open is uncertain.”

He pointed to growing uncertainty in global trade, casting doubt on the continued applicability of agreements such as the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), a U.S. law enacted in 2000 that offers preferential access to the U.S. market for eligible sub-Saharan African countries, which may not remain in force beyond 2026.

Tanoh also highlighted the increasing engagement of the European Union and the United Kingdom with the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), a South American trading bloc, as a potential challenge to Ghana’s sustained export access to those markets.

He stressed that Ghanaian exporters must be proactive in capitalising on the opportunities presented by these global uncertainties and avoid associated pitfalls through the 24-Hour Economy programme.

“If we are going to be export competitive, then we must be price competitive. Part of the technology adaptation programme for industry embedded in the 24-Hour Economy value chains is aimed at improving precision and quality, making us not only volume-ready but also quality-ready. That way, regardless of trade barriers, we will be prepared to penetrate the market.”

He encouraged exporters to focus on goods in which Ghana has a natural competitive advantage, saying:

“Those are the things we need to pursue, perfect, and incentivise.”

The forum was organised by the UKGCC in response to findings from its 2024 Business Environment and Competitiveness Survey Report, conducted with support from the UK government’s Jobs and Economic Transformation (JET) Programme and the Palladium Group.

Eugene Sangmortey, Team Leader of the Ghana JET Programme, stated that the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, and the Ghana Standards Authority, is working to address key constraints within Ghana’s business environment to stimulate growth.

“Our mission is to improve the prospects for better livelihoods among Ghanaians by supporting economic transformation and the creation of quality jobs across five strategic manufacturing sectors: textiles and garments, agro-processing, pharmaceuticals, automotive, and light manufacturing. JET aims to spur £120 million in investments, drive innovation within these sectors, and create at least 7,000 jobs,” Sangmortey said.

Neymar’s injury troubles continued as the Santos star exited the match against Atlético Mineiro on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, with what appeared to be a hamstring issue.

The 33-year-old had recently returned from six weeks on the sidelines due to a thigh injury, making his comeback against Fluminense on Sunday, April 13, 2025.

He was handed a starting role against Atlético-MG on Wednesday in what was meant to be a celebratory match, marking Neymar’s 100th appearance at Santos’ Vila Belmiro stadium.

To honor the milestone, he wore a special number 100 shirt.

However, the former Barcelona player was forced to leave the pitch after just 34 minutes when the medical team determined he could not continue. An emotional Neymar was visibly in tears as he was taken off the field.

While the extent of the injury remains unclear, head coach César Sampaio expressed hope that Neymar’s recovery would be swift.

“It’s still too early to provide a definitive answer; we don’t have a diagnosis yet. For now, we really have to pray it’s not something that will keep him out for long,” he said.

Since his return from Saudi club Al-Hilal, the former Paris Saint-Germain forward has played eight matches for Santos, scoring three goals.

Emotional Neymar Forced Off with Injury in Milestone Match

Neymar crying due to leg injury

Santos forward Neymar left the pitch in tears after suffering a leg injury just 34 minutes into his first start of the Brazilian Serie A season on Wednesday against Atletico-MG.

The 33-year-old, who had only just returned from a six-week thigh injury, was wearing a special jersey to mark his 100th appearance at Santos’ Vila Belmiro stadium. However, the celebration was cut short when Neymar signaled to the bench following a goal by teammate Alvaro Barreal that made it 2-0.

The visibly emotional star sat on the field clutching his left thigh—the same area that had recently sidelined him—before being taken off on a medical buggy.

Teammates and former Brazil international Hulk offered comfort as he exited.

“It’s too early to say anything for sure. We don’t have a diagnosis yet,” said Santos coach Cesar Sampaio. “We just have to hope it’s not serious.”

Fans and teammates now anxiously await updates on Neymar’s condition, fearing another extended spell on the sidelines.

Chief Justice’s removal must be guided by the law – Benjamin Ayeh

Benjamin Kofi Ayeh, Former Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira West Benjamin Kofi Ayeh, Former Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira West

A former Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira West, Benjamin Kofi Ayeh, has stated that the rule of law must be upheld in the looming impeachment process of the Chief Justice of Ghana, Gertrude Torkornoo.

Speaking on a wide range of issues during an interview with GhanaWeb on April 16, 2025, he indicated that he has no misgivings over President John Mahama’s consultations with the Council of State regarding petitions calling for the removal of the Chief Justice from office.

“This country is governed by the constitution and hence the rule of law must be respected in the process. So, if some citizens have made a case against the Chief Justice, let’s allow the president and the Council of State to work together to determine if there is a prima facie case.

“Now, if after this consultation, the committee set up by law to look into the matter presents their recommendations. The President shall act in accordance with the recommendations of the committee. So if indeed, she must go, then she must go. Otherwise, she must be allowed to continue her work. Essentially, let’s allow the laws of the country to work,” Benjamin Ayeh stated.

In the meantime, a suit aimed at halting the prima facie determination, filed by Old Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah in the Chief Justice’s impending impeachment process, has been adjourned again to May 6.

Presiding judge, Henrietta Mensah Brew, cited an unavoidable absence of a panel member as the reason for the adjournment.

Nana Akomea slams NPP members singling out Prof Oquaye for the party’s defeat

0

Former Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, has questioned why some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are blaming the likes of Prof Mike Oquaye Snr for the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

His comments follow criticisms by the former Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, along with other party members, on the composition of the committee established to investigate the NPP’s historic electoral loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in December 2024.

The critics claim that Prof Oquaye’s leadership as chairman of the election committee, which supervised both the presidential and parliamentary primaries, contributed to the party’s poor performance — a performance they describe as the worst in the NPP’s electoral history, marked by the loss of significant parliamentary seats.

But speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Nana Akomea wondered why the former Speaker of Parliament was being singled out.

“Have they explained how Oquaye contributed to the party’s defeat? What exactly did he do that makes them say he caused the NPP’s loss in the 2024 election?” he asked.

He added that most of the people criticising the committee were part of the campaign themselves, so he finds it strange that they are now shifting the blame.

“Let’s not make this personal. Apart from Oquaye and one other person, all the people on that committee are names I don’t even know — they are not household party names,” Akomea noted.

He stressed that the committee was constituted by the party’s National Council, not by one individual.

“It’s not one person who formed the committee. Over 110 National Council members approved it. Now the committee has finished its work and presented the report, which reflects the views and concerns of the party. So why are they now complaining?”

According to him, anyone who had concerns about the committee or its members, including Prof. Oquaye, should have raised those issues during the process — not after the report’s release.

“If anyone had issues with Prof Oquaye, they should have presented them to the committee while the process was ongoing, not now. To go out publicly and single out Prof Mike Oquaye is simply unfair,” he said.

Nana Akomea, who also served as Vice Chairman of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 campaign, urged party members to focus on the committee’s recommendations rather than personal grievances.

“They should stop personalising the matter. The report is ready, and the recommendations are the way forward for the party,” he stressed.

The 12-member committee, chaired by Prof Aaron Mike Oquaye, officially presented its findings to the party’s national leadership on Wednesday, April 16, during a brief ceremony at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

NRSA Applauds Kurt for Transparent Use of FIFA Funds

Abraham Amaliba

The Acting Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has commended the Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, for his transparent and impactful leadership.

Speaking at the handover of eight Nissan Navara pickups to Regional Football Associations under the FIFA Forward programme, Mr. Amaliba praised the GFA for visibly demonstrating the effective use of FIFA funds. “Today, we are all living testimonies to what these funds have achieved,” he said.

He also pledged NRSA’s support to provide free road safety training for RFA drivers and urged responsible vehicle use. “These are not for construction work—they’re tools to nurture talent,” he added.

The vehicle presentation forms part of the GFA’s strategy to strengthen regional structures and decentralise football development. This event also deepens the growing partnership between the NRSA and GFA, which jointly launched a nationwide Road Safety Campaign in December 2024.

Through initiatives like these, the GFA continues to show its commitment to grassroots football and public safety.

Over 200 victims of human trafficking rescued at Oyarifa, EOCO arrests 35 suspects

0

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has arrested 35 suspected human traffickers in a major operation targeting a syndicate accused of luring and exploiting over 200 individuals.

The victims, mostly foreigners and from vulnerable backgrounds, were reportedly housed in Oyarifa in Accra under false promises of a better life and employment opportunities in Ghana.

Acting Executive Director of EOCO, Abdulai Bashiru Dapilah, said the suspects operated a well-coordinated trafficking network that preyed on victims from various regions, including neighbouring West African countries.

He said the victims were allegedly deceived with offers of well-paying jobs, education, and improved living conditions.

However, upon arrival, they were confined in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, with many subjected to forced labour and exploitation.

“The operation was successful, and 219 people were arrested at Oyarifa. The victims were lured into the country by the suspects, ostensibly to give them lucrative jobs in Ghana. Unfortunately, when they came to Ghana, there were no lucrative jobs existing. Then they took them hostage, and then they confined them at the Oyarifa estates, and then they were forced to go into cyber crimes and cyber crime-related activities,” he stated.

He added that the recovered items from the location were numerous laptops, internet routers, food items, and other personal effects believed to be tools used in the cyber crime operations.

According to him, EOCO has commenced a detailed screening process to distinguish between victims, suspects, adults, and juveniles.

“The essence of the screening is to separate victims from suspects, and also identify the types of criminal activities they may have been involved in,” he added.

The Nigerian High Commission has since visited EOCO and engaged with both victims and suspects, encouraging them to cooperate fully with the authorities.

The screening process is ongoing, but EOCO anticipates concluding it within the next 24 hours. Arrangements are underway to repatriate victims, especially those from Nigeria, and reunite them with their families.

Mr Bashiru also disclosed that similar operations are being conducted elsewhere, with plans to consolidate efforts and resources for sustained impact. “This is only the beginning,” he noted. “EOCO and the CID are committed to working more closely to dismantle these criminal networks and protect vulnerable populations.”

One of the victims, who hails from neighbouring Nigeria, said he had been confined at their Oyarifa residence for more than a year, and was offered just one meal a day.

“I came to Ghana because of the difficult conditions back home. I wasn’t clearly informed about what I would be doing here, just that I would be staying with my boss. But after arriving, I discovered that my boss was involved in fraud. I didn’t have any other options, especially since we weren’t allowed to go outside and were kept indoors all the time. I’ve been in Ghana for a year now,” he narrated.

“I always pray to God to come to our rescue. An opportunity like this is what I have been praying for,” he said.

‘Emotions were running high’ – Jah Lead apologises after threatening music producer

Reggae/dancehall artiste, Jah Lead Reggae/dancehall artiste, Jah Lead

Ghanaian reggae/dancehall artiste Emmanuel Essel, popularly known as Jah Lead, has publicly apologised for threats of violence he made against music producer Joshua Raphaelson, also known as JMJ.

The conflict arose over a song featured on JMJ’s Riddim of the Gods project. Jah Lead had accused the producer of blocking the track on Audiomack despite its strong streaming performance.

He also alleged that JMJ licensed the song to Boomplay without his permission and was withholding revenue from their hit collaboration, Lonely.

In a heated statement on March 17, 2025, Jah Lead said, “He should dare not think he’s older than me, we’re age mates. When the time comes, I’ll meet him on the street and beat him mercilessly. I want people to talk about it because I’ll face him like a man.”

However, during an interview on Hitz FM on April 17, 2025, the artiste expressed remorse, revealing that his threats were fueled by personal crises, including bereavement and marital problems.

“Honestly, JM is my brother. I love him and would never assault him. Emotions were running high… I fully retract that statement. I appreciate our collaboration, and we can both move forward,” he stated.

Ntim Fordjour had legitimate intel of a suspicious flight but mishandled it – Senyo Hosi opines

0

Convener of the One Ghana Movement, Senyo Hosi Convener of the One Ghana Movement, Senyo Hosi

The Convener of the One Ghana Movement, Senyo Hosi, has shared his perspective on the allegation of cocaine smuggling and money laundering involving two planes at Kotoka International Airport, raised by the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour.

In a write-up sighted by GhanaWeb, Senyo Hosi pointed out that the legislator received legitimate intelligence about a suspicious flight heading into Ghana due to his position, but he handled it incorrectly.

He said that Ntim Fordjour’s decision to immediately publicize the intelligence was wrong on multiple fronts.

He explained that the MP’s decision to make the intel public was not in the best interest of the country and could have also undermined an ongoing international investigation.

“There is no denying that Hon. Ntim Fordjour (The Priest) gained access to legitimate intelligence about the flight being tagged as suspicious. He is an officer of the state and earmarked as a recipient of whistleblower information under Section 3(1)(f) of the Whistleblower Act, ACT 720 (2006). No wrong here. However, knowing the sensitivity and incompleteness of the information, the decision to go public prematurely was wrong,” he wrote.

“The right to freedom of speech is a guaranteed and fundamental human right under Article 21 of the 1992 Constitution. That right, however, is not absolute. Article 12(2) subjects all fundamental human rights to respect for the rights and freedoms of others and for the public interest. To be clear, and in relation to our subject matter, this clause places a limitation on the right to freedom of speech in so far as the exercise of that right will undermine the public interest,” he added.

He continued, “The public interest is not served by incomplete information that unjustifiably stains the image of our country as a drug and money laundering hub.”

Senyo Hosi argued that the correct approach would have been for the MP, in his capacity as Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, to summon the security authorities and inquire about the intelligence he had received.

“Imagine if, in this instance, the suspicious activity was part of an international enforcement agency-coordinated operation. Going public could have blown the operation and further damaged Ghana’s reputation for coordinating with international agencies. That would have been disastrous,” he said.

He also noted that when Ghana’s security authorities received the intelligence about the suspicious flight, they searched the planes and found no drugs or money onboard.

He suggested that the flight might have been flagged as suspicious due to the countries it had previously visited.

The Assin South MP, who is also the Minority’s Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, claimed at a press conference on April 1, 2025, that two flights, an air ambulance and a private jet, might have been involved in drug trafficking or money laundering.

He alleged that one of the aircraft, AirMED Flight N823AM, landed in Ghana on March 20 and stayed for five days without any record of transporting a patient.

These allegations led President John Dramani Mahama to order security agencies to “immediately and fully collaborate with the honourable Member of Parliament so he provides all necessary information to investigate the allegations and take all action necessary to expose any drug dealing.”

Thomas Partey to miss Arsenal vs PSG game due to suspension

0

Thomas Partey is a player of Arsenal Thomas Partey is a player of Arsenal

Arsenal will be without midfielder Thomas Partey when they face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-final on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the Emirates Stadium.

The Ghanaian international received a yellow card late in the match against Real Madrid on Wednesday, April 17, 2025, following a clash with Antonio Rüdiger.

The incident began when the German defender confronted Arsenal’s Mikel Merino, prompting Partey to step in and defend his teammate. However, in the heat of the moment, Partey reacted aggressively toward Rüdiger, leading the referee to issue him a booking.

With Partey already one caution away from suspension, the yellow card now rules him out of the first leg of the semi-final clash in London.

Partey’s actions drew a furious reaction from teammate Declan Rice, who was well aware that the 33-year-old’s absence would be a major blow ahead of the crucial tie.

Despite the setback, Arsenal secured an important 2-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu. Goals from Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli ensured a historic win against Real Madrid in Spain.

The Gunners became the first team to defeat Real Madrid in their first two visits to the Santiago Bernabéu, booking their place in the Champions League semi-finals.

GRIDCo rebuilds damaged Akwatia–New Obuasi power tower

0

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has completed the reconstruction of a damaged tower on its 161kV Transmission Line from Akwatia to New Obuasi, following an incident caused by illegal chainsaw operators.

But it said final conductor stringing works are expected to be completed by Sunday, April 20, 2025, to fully restore service.

The damage, which occurred on March 17, 2025, significantly disrupted power supply to Kumasi and portions of the middle belt, affecting the quality of electricity in the region.

According to GRIDCo in a statement, a felled tree struck a critical section of the transmission tower, leading to a major outage.

Maintenance engineers responded immediately to assess the extent of the damage. Their findings indicated the need for heavy-duty equipment to dismantle the damaged structure and reconstruct a new tower, a process that required widening access to the fault location.

GRIDCo used the opportunity to highlight the negative impact of illegal chainsaw operations and ‘galamsey’ activities, which often damage critical transmission infrastructure. The company urged the public to support efforts to curb such illegal practices in order to safeguard Ghana’s electricity supply.

GRIDCo also apologised to residents of Kumasi and its surrounding areas for the power disruptions caused by the incident. The company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a stable electricity transmission system across the country and beyond.

Legendary Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan has identified his former teammate Kwadwo Asamoah as the most underrated player of his generation, praising his consistency, intelligence, and understated influence on the pitch.

Gyan and Asamoah shared nearly a decade of footballing experience with the Black Stars, playing pivotal roles in some of Ghana’s most significant victories during that period.

One notable moment was Asamoah’s assist to Gyan in the Black Stars’ crucial group stage match against Portugal during the 2014 World Cup.

In an interview with TV3, Ghana’s all-time leading scorer, Asamoah Gyan, was asked to name the most underappreciated teammate from his era.

He responded by showering praise on Kwadwo Asamoah, emphasising that his remarkable talent was often overlooked.

“Kwadwo had a great career. Look at his clubs, he played for Juventus, Inter Milan, and started at Udinese. He had an excellent Black Stars career, and while we accomplished what we set out to do, I think it’s Kwadwo Asamoah,” Gyan remarked.

Kwadwo Asamoah’s illustrious career included stints with top European clubs such as Juventus and Inter Milan.

He won six Serie A titles, four Coppa Italia trophies, and three Italian Super Cups.

The government has launched the Kwahu Business Forum, a bold initiative aimed at accelerating local enterprise development, with a target of supporting over 600 businesses by the end of President John Dramani Mahama’s current term.

“We are discussing it at the presidency because of the importance the President attaches to it. This is a project he wants to see succeed,” Debrah stated.

Croatia Optimistic of Autonomy Plan to Resolve Moroccan Sahara Dispute

0

Gordan Grlić Radman and Nasser Bourita

Source: MAP -The Republic of Croatia sees the autonomy plan, proposed by Morocco in 2007 to settle the regional dispute over its Sahara, as a “good basis to reach a political solution” to this issue.

This position was expressed by Croatia’s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Gordan Grlić Radman, in a Joint Declaration adopted following a meeting in the Croatian capital with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.

The Republic of Croatia also considers the autonomy plan as “a serious and credible effort” and “a solid basis for reaching a political and mutually acceptable solution in line with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions,” Grlić Radman said.

The head of Croatian diplomacy also reiterated his country’s long-standing support for the UN-led process in order to reach a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution for all parties.

The two ministers agreed on the exclusivity of the UN in the political process and reaffirmed their support for Security Council resolution 2756 (2024), which underlined the role and responsibility of the parties in the search for a realistic, pragmatic and lasting agreement and a political solution based on compromise.

Easter is a call to higher moral standards — Catholic Bishop

0

 By Kodjo Adams

Accra, April 17, GNA – The Most Reverend John Kobina Louis, an auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Accra, says Easter is a call to higher moral standards, turning away from sinful behaviours and embracing a life of virtue and holiness.

“Easter is not merely a time for festivities but a sacred period that honours the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who died because of our sins,” he said.

He urged Christians to use the season of Easter to seek forgiveness, strive for personal transformation, and align their lives with the teachings of Christ.

The Most Rev Louis, in his Easter message on Wednesday, said the season was a time of profound spiritual significance, a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice and the promise of eternal life.

“By embracing the true essence of Easter, Christians can find renewed hope, strength, and purpose in their faith journey,” he said.

“1 Corinthians 15:12-14,17-20 states that; No Resurrection, No Christianty! and No Easter, No (Christian) Feast!

“For Christians today, Easter should signify hope, renewal, forgiveness, holiness and unwavering faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is the cornerstone of Christian belief,” he said.

“In today’s world, the resurrection of Jesus carries immense spiritual significance of serving as a beacon of hope amid suffering and uncertainty.”

“The resurrection assures believers that death is not the end and that through faith, there is the promise of eternal life.”

“It encourages Christians to live a life of purpose, resilience, and unwavering faith, knowing that they are part of a greater divine plan.”

The Bishop stressed that the resurrection brought unity because through the cross God created, from all the races of the world, one common race and one family for Himself.

He encouraged the people to make themselves ambassadors of peace in the world.

“All should endeavour to fight against evil in our lives. Let’s endeavour to become better Christians and renewed citizens who will ensure that the peace of the risen Christ will be in our hearts…,” he said.

What the Kumasi Mayor said is the truth, but flogging market women is wrong

Former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Ebenezer Nii Narh Nartey Former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Ebenezer Nii Narh Nartey

A former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Ebenezer Nii Narh Nartey, has expressed support for the Kumasi Mayor in his attempt to make the city clean for everyone.

According to him, when the city is clean, even visitors will love to come back with good reports.

“I am just hoping and believing the measures put in place by the assembly will go a long way to meet the target. To be honest, I agree with what he’s saying, there’s absolute sense in what he’s saying. I only disagree with him on flogging the traders when they refuse to comply but what he said is the truth,” he indicated.

In a UTV video posted on X on April 16, 2025, Nartey called for support for and urged traders to comply with the assembly to help deliver and achieve results.

He made this comment in reaction to the Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi’s remarks that were made ahead of a planned two-week decongestion exercise which has drawn widespread condemnations, with calls from the public for him to retract his statement and offer an apology.

Despite the backlash, the Mayor stood by his comments to flog traders who flout rules regarding the use of pedestrian walkways, arguing that the threat of flogging is necessary to restore discipline and cleanliness in Kumasi.

“I don’t believe in using the police for decongestion because I will spend so much on them, and after that, we will get back to the status quo,” he stated.

Boadi said Kumasi is engulfed with filth, and there is a need to deal with it head-on.

He also stated that it is unacceptable for people to cook and sell food in the middle of the road.

Togbe Afede XIV destools Ho Bankoe Mankrado over misconduct, insubordination

0

Agbogbomefia of Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, has destooled Mankrado of Ho Bankoe Agbogbomefia of Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, has destooled Mankrado of Ho Bankoe

The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, has destooled the Mankrado of Ho Bankoe and Afetorfia of the Muviefe Clan, Togbe Afiatsoa III, with immediate effect, citing repeated insubordination and misconduct.

A statement dated Thursday, April 17, 2025, and signed by the Secretary of the Asogli State Council, Stephen Tetteh, described the decision as difficult but necessary.

“This decision, though painful and taken with the utmost restraint and reflection, became necessary due to a consistent pattern of misconduct and insubordination on the part of Togbe Afiatsoa III.

Over an extended period, he has exhibited gross disregard for traditional authority, deliberately denigrated the revered Agbogbome Stool, and persistently brought the name of Asogli into disrepute,” it noted.

The statement added that despite several attempts to encourage reconciliation and reforms, Togbe Afiatsoa III chose to escalate tensions through public platforms and on social media.

“Togbe Afiatsoa III was given numerous opportunities by the Elders of Ho Bankoe to reform his ways, reconcile with leadership, and return to the path of dignity and respect that befits his former office.

“Sadly, he chose to spurn all such opportunities and instead resorted to the reckless use of social media and other public platforms to spread falsehoods, cast aspersions, and peddle misinformation aimed at undermining the image, integrity, and cohesion of the traditional leadership of both Ho and the larger Asogli State,” it added.

Be ready to access markets by meeting required standards – Augustus Tanoh

Ernest Appau declares Asante Kotoko’s 1982 team as Ghana’s greatest club side

0

The players of Asante Kotoko's 1982 team The players of Asante Kotoko’s 1982 team

Former Asante Kotoko defender Ernest Appau has boldly claimed that the club’s 1982 squad is the greatest team in the history of Ghanaian club football.

Reflecting on the team’s talent, cohesion, and dominance during that era, Appau believes no other Ghanaian club side has matched the quality and impact of the legendary Asante Kotoko 1982 team.

In an interview with Kessben TV, Appau, who was an integral part of the squad, highlighted its exceptional strength and balance.

Although he acknowledged the lack of unity among the players, he praised the group’s unique combination of skill, strategy, and standout individual talent, which, in his view, set them apart.

“If we’re being honest, the 1982 Kotoko team was the greatest club side Ghana has ever seen,” he stated passionately. “We had everything, talent, experience, and drive, but we lacked unity, and that was our downfall.”

Appau also compared the revered 1982 squad to the 1983 Asante Kotoko team. While the latter may not have boasted the same level of star power, they accomplished what the 1982 side could not by clinching the CAF Champions League title.

“The 1983 team may not have had the star power of 1982, but they had something we didn’t, which was unity. They were one family, and that’s what made the difference,” he added.

Despite their remarkable quality, the 1982 Asante Kotoko team fell short of winning the African Champions League due to internal conflicts and a lack of cohesion among the players.

Nana Akomea reacts to Mussa Dankwah’s post-election survey

0

The Vice Chairman of the 2024 Bawumia Campaign Team, Nana Akomea, has stated that they are ready to engage with the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah, regarding his findings on the 2024 election.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Nana Akomea, who is also the former Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation, expressed the team’s desire to understand the methodologies and basis behind the findings.

“We will approach him for the details to understand what we can learn from it, especially since one of his surveys revealed that about 60% of Ghanaians prefer Bawumia in the next elections. It’s important that we understand these details and be guided accordingly,” he stated.

This comes after the release of Dankwah’s survey, which attributed the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections to key figures within the party.

Dankwah explained that the initial phase of the study allowed respondents to freely mention who they believed was responsible for the NPP’s loss.

The report highlighted former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as the second-most blamed figure, with 40% of respondents attributing the defeat to his management of the economy.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 presidential candidate and then-Vice President, was cited by 37% of respondents, who felt his campaign lacked sufficient inspiration.

Other figures mentioned included Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh (33%), various government appointees (32%), and Members of Parliament (25%). Kennedy Agyapong, who contested the NPP flagbearer race but did not lead the party into the general election, was blamed by 9% of respondents.

The team then used the most frequently mentioned names to design a more structured, close-ended survey.

Although Nana Akomea admitted that the findings might be unclear, he emphasised the need for further engagement to better understand the survey and gain clarity on its implications.

Data Link donates to orphanage, urges support for vulnerable children

By Elizabeth Larkwor Baah

Tema, April 17, GNA – Data Link Institute of Business and Technology has extended support to Remar Tema Children’s Home at Tema Community Eleven with an unspecified amount of money to show solidarity and compassion towards the inmates.

The donation forms part of the institution’s broader efforts to contribute to social development and child welfare in Ghana.

Professor Stanley Saamoah Moffat, the President of the Institute, presenting the money, stated that the donation was not only to assist the underprivileged children but also to commend the management and staff of the orphanage for their tireless efforts in providing a safe and nurturing environment for the young ones.

Professor Moffat said the gesture was part of the institution’s continuous commitment to giving back to society and its moral commitment to supporting vulnerable children.

“We, as a body, feel that it is an obligation and, in fact, a moral responsibility in our small way to acknowledge the management and staff for what they are doing. They work with so much compassion, dedication, and hard work to provide a home, love, hope and opportunities for the children, he stated.

He further emphasised the need for more individuals, institutions, and private organisations to extend support to orphans and vulnerable children across the country, citing the United States as a good example of how to view charity work, particularly towards children, as a societal norm and part of nation-building.

Professor Moffat also referenced Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who he said had a clear national policy focused on supporting orphans and vulnerable children in the 1960s and lamented the apparent decline in structured national efforts towards the welfare of orphans.

He mentioned that a UNICEF report highlighted the devastating number of orphans around the world and emphasised the urgent need to support these vulnerable children to prevent them from becoming a burden to society.

Mr. Philip Gebu, Chaplain of Data Link, stated that the gesture was an annual event held during the Easter season to appreciate God’s care and protection over the children, community, and the country at large.

Mr. Dodzi Agbo, the head caretaker of Remar Tema Children’s Home, thanked Data Link Institute for the timely support in a time when they critically needed funds to settle their bills.

He noted that there were 25 children at the orphanage, noting that some of the inmates had completed senior high schools and were working, indicating that such donations help in catering for the children.

He appealed to other institutions to emulate the gesture and contribute towards building a better future for the children.

Mahama off track on 120-day social contract – Ahiagbah claims

0

Director of Communications for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has criticised President Mahama for failing to deliver on his promised 120-day social contract, saying he is far from meeting the targets set out.

Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews, Mr Ahiagbah said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had made lofty promises ahead of the elections, but with just under 20 days left in the 120-day timeline, very little had been achieved.

“He is not on track at all. From what he said he would do in 120 days, and what he has done so far, it is minimal compared to what is outstanding. So he is off track, gravely off track,” he said.

According to Mr Ahiagbah, the NDC over-promised and is now struggling to meet expectations. “They bit more than they could chew, and right now, they are just going to be playing with us with words and excuses until the four years are done.”

He added that the failure to meet the full 120-day commitment signals a broken promise.

“Clearly, what they committed themselves to with 19 or so days remaining, they cannot deliver. So it is a failed promise, as I can put it. He’s failed Ghanaians in the quest to achieve these things in 120 days.”

Mr Ahiagbah was particularly critical of the NDC’s much-publicised 24-hour economy policy, questioning its implementation.

“They were chanting 1-3-3 – one job, three people, and three shifts all over. Where is that? It is nowhere. There is no provision in the budget that shows they are going to implement it, so he cannot be on track.”

He also said the President’s achievements, such as the appointment of ministers within 14 days, were “low-hanging fruit.”

“The real things where he must show leadership are still outstanding. What happened to the banning of galamsey in forest reserves? He promised to repeal the LI, he hasn’t. Instead, he’s taken a minimalist approach by amending it,” he said.

Mr Ahiagbah further criticised the recent launch of the ‘One Million Coders’ programme, calling it a last-minute effort to appear active.

“And just yesterday [Wednesday], they hurriedly commissioned the 1 million coders programme. In terms of fulfilling the contract, he has not. What would have been substantial for Ghanaians is to see all of these things done, because the commitment was to get all of it done. At this point, he hasn’t even done 50% of them.”

EOCO arrests 219 in major anti-human trafficking operation

0

The Economic and Organised Office (EOCO), in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces, has arrested 219 individuals across the West African sub-region for alleged involvement in human trafficking and cybercrime activities.

The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation targeting criminal networks engaged in trafficking and online fraud.

The EOCO-led operation named “Operation Rescue Shield” arrested 219 Nigerians and Ghanaians aged between 15 years to 38 years. Eleven minors, seven females and two hundred and twelve males.

At a press conference held on Thursday, April 17, Acting Executive Director of EOCO, Abdul Bashiru Dapilah, revealed that the victims were lured with promises of lucrative employment but were instead held hostage and compelled to engage in cybercrime operations.

“The operation was successful, and 219 people were arrested at Isak estates in Oyarifa. The victims were lured into the country by the suspects ostensibly to give them lucrative jobs in Ghana.

“Unfortunately, when they came to Ghana, since there were no lucrative jobs existing then, they took them hostage and confined them at the Oyarifa estate and were forced to go into cybercrimes and cybercrime-related activities,” he explained.

He emphasised the importance of regional cooperation in combating such transnational crimes and reaffirmed EOCO’s commitment to dismantling these criminal networks.

Several laptops, personal effects, internet facilities, and other items were retrieved from the suspects. The victims were both Nigerians and Ghanaians.

Currently, investigations are ongoing into the team behind the trafficking, while screening is ongoing to separate the victims from the suspects and the juveniles from the adults.

“We are thinking that come what may, by tomorrow [April 18], we should be able to complete the screening, then barring any unforeseen circumstances, we should be able to make arrangements for the victims to be sent back to Nigeria to connect with their families,” he stated.

What exactly did Prof. Mike Oquaye do? — Nana Akomea questions blame over NPP’s electoral loss

0

Former Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, has questioned why some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are blaming Professor Mike Oquaye Snr for the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

His comments follow criticisms by the former Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, along with other party members, on the composition of the committee established to investigate the NPP’s historic electoral loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The critics claim that Professor Oquaye’s leadership as chairman of the election committee, which supervised both the presidential and parliamentary primaries, contributed to the party’s poor performance — a performance they describe as the worst in the NPP’s electoral history, marked by the loss of significant parliamentary seats.

He added that most of the people criticising the committee were part of the campaign themselves, so he finds it strange that they are now shifting blame.

“If anyone had issues with Prof. Oquaye, they should have presented them to the committee while the process was ongoing, not now. To go out publicly and single out Professor Mike Oquaye is simply unfair,” he said.

Nana Akomea, who also served as Vice Chairman of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 campaign, urged party members to focus on the committee’s recommendations rather than personal grievances.

“They should stop personalising the matter. The report is ready, and the recommendations are the way forward for the party,” he stressed.

The 12-member committee, chaired by Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, officially presented its findings to the party’s national leadership on Wednesday, April 16, during a brief ceremony at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

Empowering youth, healing communities: Innovative solutions to youth substance abuse

0

For far too long, Ghanaians have neglected the pressing issue of substance abuse among the youth—those in the formative years of adolescence and young adulthood, typically ranging from 15 to 24 according to the UN, leading to unprecedented levels of addiction. Contrary to popular belief, both globally and in Ghana, addiction is not simply a choice or something that can just be switched off.

It is a neurobiological condition that requires rehabilitation-focused treatment and empathy for effective recovery. Normally, activities that bring pleasure trigger the release of dopamine, the brain’s ‘feel-good’ chemical. However, when someone repeatedly uses addictive substances, the brain becomes increasingly dependent on them because they release an extremely high amount of dopamine very quickly. This causes the dopamine receptors of the brain to decrease due to the dopamine overload, making it harder to experience pleasure from everyday activities that would otherwise have been sufficient. This rewiring of the brain leads to intense cravings and a cycle of use that’s very hard to break. To address the issue, we must adopt community-based approaches to fight this at a grassroots level.

Peer education presents a crucial first step in doing this, given the social dynamics that lead to substance abuse in the Ghanaian youth. Negative peer pressure has led to a lot of substance use, leading to abuse. A 2014 study from the University of Cape Coast reveals that nearly half of  SHS students who use substances do so out of curiosity, with over 27% obtaining alcohol from friends and choosing to drink in social settings. These statistics paint a clear picture: peer influence plays a pivotal role in both initiating and maintaining substance use patterns. However, this unfortunate reality can be transformed into a powerful tool for preventing and helping young people break free from the chains of substance abuse.

The implementation of peer education programs should take inspiration from the proven method of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) but be adapted to address the full spectrum of substance abuse facing the Ghanaian youth, both in SHS and University. Picture this: after-school meetings in a private classroom led by student facilitators where everyone is discussing their struggles with or concerns about substance abuse. That’s what this model provides, along with confidentiality, everyone involved would be required to sign a binding agreement that “what’s shared here stays here”. Schools should allocate time and space for this, to enable students to have enough contact hours and feel safe. Students who then benefit from these meetings could embark on public speaking journeys at educational institutions and churches to share their stories and offer mentorship.

Beyond this, tackling youth substance abuse requires active parental support and intervention. Hospitals and other healthcare-related organisations should organise workshops to teach parents about behaviours that are associated with substance use so that it can be identified early. Ghanaian parents need to understand the need to express empathy and provide emotional support instead of lashing out and exacerbating the problem. Parents can be accessed for workshops through schools, churches and the workplace. These workshops should be focused on teaching parents how to detect warning signs, communicate effectively and be a safe space for their young ones who may feel isolated or misunderstood. This would go a long way in helping young people recover from substance abuse.

In addition to peer education and parental involvement, local governments—Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs)—should provide funding for community-based rehabilitation programs where rehabilitation and skills training centres are set up to help recovering addicts through mentorship, counselling, and vocational training. This would allow young addicts to re-integrate themselves into society with valuable skills that they can use to get employed or start businesses. MMDAs should also partner with businesses to secure actual job opportunities for their youth, ensuring that there’s truly a productive way forward. For SHS students, counselling should be centred around highlighting the importance of school and providing advice for the next steps in their academic journey to enable them to choose fulfilling careers where they can truly make an impact in society.

If we truly want to secure a prosperous future for our youth and the country as a whole, we must treat youth substance abuse as a collective issue. By setting up peer education programs, equipping parents with the right tools and through local government support, we can empower the youth and heal our communities.

‘Bring proof!’ – Artiste manager debunks claims of spiritual attacks in gospel music industry

0

Artiste manager and entertainment analyst, Steve Owusu Artiste manager and entertainment analyst, Steve Owusu

Gospel artiste manager and entertainment analyst, Steve Owusu, also known as Shishiishi Man, has dismissed claims made by some Ghanaian gospel artistes about facing spiritual attacks in the music industry, describing such allegations as baseless.

His comments came in response to recent claims by gospel artistes Cwesi Oteng and Esther Smith, who alleged they were victims of spiritual sabotage.

Oteng had previously stated that his album was taken to a cemetery for ritual purposes, while Smith described the gospel music industry as “evil.”

Music producer Fred Kyei Mensah also supported their claims, saying his gospel musician son had faced similar attacks and that the gospel scene was “worse than the secular industry.”

However, speaking on Accra-based Amansan Television, Owusu dismissed these assertions, stating that everyone faces challenges and that it would be baseless to interpret these as spiritual attacks.

“We have people who are not even gospel artistes going through struggles, from ushers to cleaners. Everyone faces challenges. There’s no gospel artiste or person in Ghana who can say they aren’t experiencing some form of hardship. It’s normal. So, I’m surprised gospel artistes are interpreting this as evil attacks,” he said.

He challenged Cwesi Oteng to provide evidence, saying, “Can he give me any gospel artiste who took his album to the cemetery? He has no proof. He is lying. He should bring the proof and tell us which industry player took his items to Awudome or Osu cemetery.”

Owusu further noted that top gospel stars like Joe Mettle and Diana Hamilton do not make such claims, adding that Cwesi Oteng was simply pushing his frustration onto others.

“Everybody is going through something. You can’t push your frustration onto others. These are artistes who are fading off and blaming others for their struggles,” he said.

He added, “Last year, I was robbed after MOG’s concert in Kumasi. This year, my car broke down on the way there. Should I say MOG is attacking me? It doesn’t make sense. We shouldn’t be making childish claims.”

Ntim Fordjour had legitimate intelligence of a suspicious flight but mishandled it – Senyo Hosi opines

All three telco CEOs agree on addressing data prices

Ghanaians pay high data prices Ghanaians pay high data prices

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has confirmed that the government is on track to expand discussions on reducing data prices in Ghana.

According to George, the committee responsible for this initiative has already submitted a roadmap to guide the process.

He also addressed claims that he promised to reduce data prices within 14 days. “People said I promised prices would drop in 14 days. No. I said I would get a roadmap in 14 days, and in 13 days, the committee submitted it,” he clarified, as quoted by myjoyonline.com.

George acknowledged that, in the short term, the government is not yet in a position to reduce prices across the board.

“So we’ve focused on specific demographics,” he said.

He also highlighted the role of the National Communications Authority (NCA), the sector’s regulator, in facilitating progress.

“The effort has received full support from telcos. I met all three CEOs, and they all agreed that we needed to do something about data prices,” he revealed.

The minister cited taxation and the cost of power as significant factors contributing to the high data prices.

“Taxation is a big part of it,” he said. “And the cost build-up in terms of power.”

“This is not just talk,” he emphasized. “We’re putting in the work.”

The 28-year-old Gabon international died on April 16, 2025, after falling from the 11th floor of his apartment in Hangzhou, China.

According to multiple reports, Chinese police have taken his brother in for questioning after initial investigations raised concerns.

Sources allege that Boupendza and his brother were involved in a heated argument shortly before the fatal incident. As a result, investigators are considering the possibility that Boupendza may have been pushed, though no official conclusions have been announced.

Boupendza began his professional football journey with CF Mounana in Gabon before moving to Bordeaux in France. He rose to prominence in Turkey with Hatayspor, where he was crowned the league’s top scorer in the 2020/21 season.

Concerned Youth of Damang back govt’s takeover of gold mine

0

A group calling itself the Concerned Youth of the Damang Site Catchment Area has expressed their support for the government’s decision not to renew the mining lease of Abosso Goldfields Limited (AGL) in Damang.

Goldfield’s current lease expires on April 25, and the company had reportedly applied for a lease extension in December 2024.

However, the government intends to take over the operations and has instructed the leading global gold producer to vacate the site by April 18, 2025.

According to one of the convenors of the Concerned Youth of the Damang Site Catchment Area, Eric Garibor, Goldfields failed to prioritise the welfare of locals despite promising to do so.

“This wasn’t a partnership. It was extraction with exclusion. Now that they are gone, let us chart a new course. A Ghanaian success story is possible. We’ve seen it at Awaso. Let’s do the same in Damang,” said Eric Garibor.

‘Full support’

A number of industry players in the country’s extractive sector including the Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (GHEITI) and the Minerals Commission have already backed this move by the government, highlighting the opportunity to maximize national benefit from the mineral resources.

The Chairman of GHEITI, Dr. Steve Manteaw, welcomed the decision, noting that the country must prioritize value for money in lease agreements.

“There have been instances where certain expired leases were renewed for the holders to only flip, sell the mine and make huge profits which should have come to the state. I am not saying that is the reason for the decision of the Minerals Commission in this particular instance but I won’t be surprised but let’s believe that the regulator is working in the best interest of the state I don’t believe there’s any course for worry,” he explained.

However, the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has called on the Ghanaian government to suspend plans to take over the gold mine.

Agrihouse Foundation Launches Ghana Poultry Day Festival

Dignitaries at the launch

The Ghana Tourism Authority in collaboration with Agrihouse Foundation, a non-governmental organization dedicated to building agricultural capacity, with a unique focus on transforming perceptions and leading the conversation on agriculture, has launched the 5th edition of the Ghana Poultry Day festival in Accra.

Executive Director Agrihouse, Alberta Nana Akyaa Akosa, explained that the programme launched five years ago, aimed at drawing attention to Ghana’s poultry sector, showcasing the numerous opportunities within the sector. She admitted that the sector was declining severely in terms of investments and growth, and hoped this programme would bring attention to the shortfall within the sector.

“This programme was started five years ago, to draw attention to the poultry sector and the opportunities within it. Beyond drawing attention to the opportunities, we want everyone to know that the sector is declining when it comes to growth, when it comes to investment, and when it comes to the youth getting themselves involved in the sector due to the many challenges faced by the sector,” she explained.

She expressed joy at the current administration’s “Nkonko Nkitinkiti” programme, stating that the private sector had an intricate role to play in the success of the project. She also expressed excitement that policymakers and numerous stakeholders have all taken the initiative and actively participate in the activities, over the last five years.

“We are glad that 5 years down the line at least we have been able to draw that attention to the poultry sector that our policymakers and leaders of institutions come together to make food free for the general public,” she said.

While explaining what they hope to achieve throughout the year, she mentioned that they would be collaborating with queen mothers who will be given day-old chicks across the sixteen regions. These queenmothers will mobilise 100 young people to champion the growth of the poultry sector in their respective communities.

“We are working with our queenmothers who are part of the network across the sixteen regions. We’ll be giving all of them day-old chicks. They have agreed to mobilise about 100 youth from their respective communities. Through that, we will champion the growth of the poultry industry at the community level,” she stated.

She added that members of the public who will make it to the Ghana Poultry Day festival scheduled for July 1, 2025, at the forecourt of the State House will be given day-old chicks as yet another move to boost the poultry sector.

‘Admit you’re doing highlife, don’t run from it’ – Ackah Blay to young artistes

0

Veteran Highlife musician, Ackah Blay Veteran Highlife musician, Ackah Blay

Veteran Highlife musician, Ackah Blay, has urged the younger generation of musicians to embrace the fact that they are creating Highlife music, even if they label it under different genres.

Speaking in an interview with Adom TV, Ackah Blay explained that many young artistes are unknowingly composing variations of Highlife yet hesitate to associate with the genre due to misconceptions about its relevance.

“Everyone is doing Highlife. It’s like a tree with different branches and different colours of leaves, but it’s the same tree,” he said, likening the genre’s diversity to a growing, adaptable tree.

He further entreated younger musicians to avoid labelling their work as Highlife because they see it as outdated.

“The problem is that the young artistes don’t want to admit they are doing Highlife. They don’t want to call it Highlife because they think the genre is archaic,” he noted.

Ackah Blay, who identifies as a practitioner of Kudum Highlife, emphasised the genre’s richness and versatility, pointing out that it encompasses a wide range of styles including Kpanlogo, Adowa, Borborbor, and Asafo.

“It’s versatile. It has different forms… They just have to own up and say they are doing Highlife. But you hear them talking about Dancehall and Hip-Hop,” he added.

The veteran musician encouraged today’s artistes to take pride in their musical roots, stressing that acknowledging and preserving Highlife is key to sustaining Ghana’s unique musical identity.

Accra is in a mess because of NDC, NPP

0

Former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Ebenezer Nii Narh Nartey Former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Ebenezer Nii Narh Nartey

A former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Ebenezer Nii Narh Nartey, has blamed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the mess that has been caused in Accra due to things like uncollected refuse littered around the city.

According to him, the lack of political role in the development of Accra is the cause of this mess.

He explained that if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) do not put politics aside, there will be no way the city would be well structured to allow for issues such as sanitation to be properly tackled.

“We need to get a political role to deal with issues. That’s one major problem we have in this country,” he indicated.

Speaking in a video shared by UTV on X, the former MP is heard saying, for instance, in the Central Business District of Accra, specifically on the Kinbu Road, the Accra City Hotel area, Accra Technical University and its environs have been turned into a market center, leaving pedestrians and vehicles to use the other lane.

“So, I keep on saying, especially in Accra, two political parties, the NDC and the NPP, are the reasons Accra is filthy. When President Mills made Alfred Oko Vanderpuije the Mayor of Accra and he started to put things in order, the former National Organiser of the NDC, Yaw Boateng Gyan, said ‘We’ve been campaigning whiles you were abroad. You can’t make us lose votes,’ and so Oko Vanderpuije washed his hands. At the end of the day, the problem is still there,” he stated.

He added that; “The former regional minister, Henry Quartey, started in Greater Accra to make things work. Our own people started insulting him, saying all manner of things. Others even went to extend of going to the president to lie about him. Some even organised women to the national party headquarters to demonstrate, and Henry had to wash his hands. At the end of the day, the problem is still there.”

Consumer Protection Agency threatens legal action against PURC over tariff adjustments

The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has vowed to sue the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) over its decision to adjust tariffs, describing the move as illegal.

According to the CPA, they will head to court to stop PURC if their calls to halt the tariff adjustments fall on deaf ears.

The Director in Charge of Mediation and Arbitration at the CPA, Nana Prempeh Okogyeabur, revealed that the committees legally mandated to review tariffs at PURC, including the Technical Committee and the External Committee, have yet to be constituted after the change in government.

Speaking on OTEC 102.9 FM’s Dwabrem show on Wednesday, hosted by Dr. Cash, Nana Prempeh emphasized that allowing the tariff adjustment would cripple not only businesses but also ordinary Ghanaians.

The PURC had announced a 14.75% increase in electricity tariffs and a 4.02% increase in water tariffs, effective May 2, 2025. The adjustments were attributed to factors such as exchange rates, inflation projections, fuel costs, and the current hydro-thermal generation mix. However, the CPA questions the legitimacy of this decision, arguing that the PURC did not conduct sufficient consultations and failed to adequately represent consumer interests.

Nana Prempeh noted that the CPA will do everything possible to halt the tariff adjustment, stressing that the agency’s primary concern is to protect consumers from unfair practices.

The CPA believes that without the reconstitution of the Technical and External Committees, PURC’s decision lacks legitimacy and fails to meet the standards of fairness, transparency, and inclusivity.

The agency has urged the PURC to suspend the proposed tariff adjustments until broad-based consultations are conducted and consumer interests are properly represented.

The CPA also expressed concern over the quality of service delivery by utility providers, pointing to unresolved complaints consistently raised by consumers.
