Here is how much the Black Queens actually received after the bonus standoff

0

The Black Queens of Ghana have received their bonuses The Black Queens of Ghana have received their bonuses

After days of uncertainty and a threatened boycott, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation has finally settled all outstanding bonuses owed to the Black Queens.

The situation, which nearly disrupted Ghana’s second-leg tie against Egypt in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers, was resolved after an emergency meeting involving Sports Minister Kofi Adams and GFA President Kurt Okraku.

The players went on to deliver an emphatic 4-0 victory in Accra, sealing a 7-0 aggregate win and their ticket to Morocco.

But what exactly did the team receive? Here’s a breakdown based on official reports.

Check out Black Queens player ratings after 4-0 win over Egypt

Standard winning bonus structure

Under Ghana’s national team framework, each player and technical team member is entitled to $1,500 per win. During the 2024 WAFCON campaign, the Queens recorded three key victories:

One group stage win, a quarterfinal win, and the third-place playoff win.

This amounted to a total of $4,500 per player (1,500 x 3 wins) under normal conditions.

However, in a gesture aimed at boosting morale and recognizing the team’s overall achievement, Minister Kofi Iddie Adams pushed for an enhanced bonus package.

Even though the Queens secured just one group-stage win, the Minister approved payments as if they had won all three, effectively granting the full $4,500 group stage bonus.

He also increased the quarterfinal bonus to $2,000 and the third-place bonus to $3,000, bringing the total per player to $9,500.

As such, each player ultimately received $9,000, with $500 withheld for standard tax and transaction deductions applied to all government payments.

According to the reports, officials have clarified that there was no shortfall in the final payments; the deductions were in line with public financial disbursement regulations.

Technical team and coaching staff

The 22-member technical team each received $4,500, reflecting the standard 3-win tally. The head coach, in accordance with established practice, earned double the staff bonus, $9,000.

PAC questions ECG’s quarterly tariff hikes amid financial irregularities

0

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of parliament has questioned the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) justification for its constant quarterly upward tariff adjustments, citing significant financial infractions and inefficiencies uncovered in the 2024 Auditor-General’s Report.

Electricity tariffs for all consumer categories went up by 1.14 percent on October 1, 2025, as part of ECG’s quarterly review mechanism.

The utility provider is, however, seeking approval from the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) for a much larger 225 percent increase in its Distribution Service Charge for the 2025–2029 tariff period.

The Auditor-General’s Report revealed worrying expenditure overruns — with foreign training costs rising from a budgeted GH¢21 million to GH¢91 million, cleaning expenses increasing from GH¢2.8 million to GH¢10.4 million, and consultancy fees jumping from GH¢40 million to GH¢58.6 million.

PAC Chair Abena Osei-Asare, during a sitting on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, argued that such inefficiencies weaken ECG’s case for higher tariffs.

“Looking at all the infractions that you have been cited here for and the quantum of money involved — if we should manage the resources we have efficiently, I don’t think we should look at tariff increments per the arrangement,” she said.

She further cautioned that the current quarterly tariff adjustments — coupled with evidence of wasteful spending — undermine public confidence in the company.

“If we use these resources efficiently, we can support the difference in what you buy and how much we pay for. But quarterly increments of tariffs with all these infractions — something doesn’t sit well,” she added.

GH man goes viral for lashing beggars at Circle

A viral video which is circulating on social media and has sparked outrage captures the moment a Ghanaian man filmed assaulting street beggars at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange in Accra.

CSIR, ACE4ES Strengthen Media Role in Promoting Climate Resilience

0

The Agroecology Circular Economy for Ecosystem Services (ACE4ES) in collaboration with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research -Crop Research Institute(CSIR-CRI) and the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG), has organised a day’s training workshop for the media in Accra.

The workshop, on the theme “Strategic Media Programming for Agroecology, Circular Economy and Climate Change Communication,” aimed at strengthening the capacity of journalists to effectively report on environmental sustainability, agroecology, and climate resilience.

It provided participants with broad knowledge and understanding of human activities and their impact on the environment, while encouraging the media to play an active role in promoting sustainable practices through strategic communication.

The Principal Investigator for the Agroecology and Circular Economy for Ecosystem Services Project in Africa and Research Scientist at the CSIR–CRI, Dr Kwaku Onwona-Hwesofour Asante, underscored the crucial role of the media in advancing sustainable development and environmental conservation.

He said the media’s ability to shape public awareness and attitudes towards environmental issues could not be overemphasised, adding that empowering journalists with scientific understanding would help bridge the knowledge gap at the community level.

“We have seen that when the public is well informed, they take the needed action. Unfortunately, at the community level, there is still limited understanding of environmental sustainability due to the scientific nature of the concepts,” Dr Asante noted.

He explained that training journalists on agroecology and circular economy principles was essential, as they served as key extension agents capable of educating the public to make informed decisions.

Dr Asante observed that agricultural emissions such as methane, black carbon, and nitrous oxide contribute significantly to global warming and pose serious public health challenges.

Raising awareness, he said, would help mitigate their impact and promote healthier and more sustainable agricultural practices.

He urged the media to integrate environmental sustainability messages into their regular programming rather than treating them as occasional topics, stressing that consistent coverage would promote behaviour change and public action.

“As scientific institutions generate innovations and technologies, we expect the media to highlight these advancements to enhance awareness and inspire communities to adopt sustainable practices,” he said.

Dr Asante expressed optimism that stronger collaboration between the CSIR and the media would amplify the impact of research findings, enhance public understanding of agroecology and the circular economy, and contribute to sustainable development in Ghana and beyond.

He assured that the CSIR–CRI and its partners would continue to engage the media regularly to sustain dialogue and drive national awareness on environmental sustainability.

Minority files motion to stop vetting of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie

0

The Minority in Parliament has filed a motion calling for the suspension of all proceedings on the nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice until all pending legal cases concerning the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo are resolved.

In the motion, the Minority, citing Articles 110(1), 125–127, 144(1) and 146 of the 1992 Constitution and relevant Standing Orders, urged Parliament to suspend the Appointments Committee’s vetting and any plenary debate or approval processes.

The motion specifically referenced multiple ongoing cases, including an ECOWAS Court suit (No. ECW/CCJ/APP/32/25) and other applications before the Supreme Court and High Court, which directly relate to Justice Torkornoo’s removal.

It further requested that the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, appear before Parliament to provide a comprehensive briefing on the status of all litigation related to the matter. The briefing, according to the motion, should cover the identity and status of the suits, any interim or conservatory orders granted, the reliefs sought, and their implications for the office of the Chief Justice.

Additionally, Minority seeks clarification on Ghana’s obligations under regional treaties relevant to the ECOWAS Court proceedings, as well as the government’s assessment of the potential legal and constitutional consequences of proceeding with the appointment while the cases remain pending.

The motion comes after the announcement of the vetting of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who was nominated by President John Dramani Mahama following the removal of Chief Justice Torkornoo.

Holy Child College of Education unveils 80th anniversary

0

By Mildred Siabi-Mensah

Fijai (WR) Oct. 29, GNA – The Holy Child College of Education in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly has launched its 80th anniversary with a call on stakeholders to help provide the needed school supplies for greater academic impact.

Dr Francis Hull Adams, Principal of the College, said the institution lacked basic infrastructure that directly affect the quality of student learnings.

The College, established in 1946 as a Catholic faith-based institution, is celebrating 80 years of shaping minds, nurturing leaders, and serving Ghana.

It is also accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission to offer degrees and diplomas in Early Childhood Education, and it is the only teacher training college in the Western Region.

Currently, the College has a student population of 1,472, all of whom are females.

Dr Adams noted that despite its vital role, the institution faces significant challenges, including a severe deficit of academic chairs, bad roads, vehicles and other challenges that hampered its progress.

The 80th anniversary celebrations have a series of events spanning from November 2025 to a grand climax on Saturday, April 25, 2026.

Dr Adams called on the government and stakeholders in education to help provide immediate aid to address the pressing issues and secure the college’s future.

“We face several pressing challenges that require immediate attention. Our internal roads are in a deplorable state, and the area around the college lacks visibility, posing safety concerns. We’re appealing to government agencies, NGOs, and well-wishers to assist us in rehabilitating our roads,” he said.

Dr Adams commended the current administration for reviving all stalled projects on campus, marking a significant step forward for the college.

“Two key projects that had stalled are now back on track. The 300-capacity hostel project, initiated by the government, was halted but has recently seen new activity with a new contractor on site. We’re hopeful that work will resume without further interruptions.

“The construction of a lecture hall complex, which had stalled, has also restarted. We’re optimistic about the progress of these projects and look forward to their completion,” Dr Adams added.

Reflecting on the anniversary’s theme: “80 Years of Excellence, Empowerment, and Innovation in Teacher Education in the 21st Century,” Dr Mrs Becky Boakye-Yiadom, an alumna and the Central Regional Quality Assurance Manager of the National Health Insurance Authority, stated that the College had never been contented with mediocrity.

“The College has never settled for mediocrity. On this campus, we’ve been taught that teaching is not just a profession, but a calling, a sacred duty to shape minds and hearts. Holy Child gave us wings, teaching us to stand tall, find our voices, and lift others as we grow,” she added.

She reiterted the need for stakeholder support for the College to be able to provide the vital training for its trainees towards the total academic development of Children in Ghana.

‘Cut the nonsense hair or go to GIS’

0

MP for Gomoa Central, Kwame A Plus MP for Gomoa Central, Kwame A Plus

Gomoa Central Member of Parliament, Kwame Asare Obeng popularly known as A Plus has waded into the ongoing debate over the policy in public schools in Ghana requiring Senior High School students to cut their hairs before enrollment.

According to him, private schools such as Ghana International School (GIS) pose as alternate options to parents who disagree with such policies.

In a post on his Facebook page on October 29, 2025, A Plus posted, “Don’t cut your kids’ hair. That nonsense must stop. Take your kids to GIS. You can’t pay GIS? Cut the ‘nonsense’ hair and go for free!”

The debate reignited following viral videos of students being forced to trim their hairs against their will just to gain admission into schools.

While some education stakeholders maintain that hair does not influence academic performance, others, including A-Plus, have defended the schools’ right to enforce the rule as part of school discipline standards.

Recently, the Minister of Education, Haruna Idirisu, speaking at the 75th anniversary of Mawuli Senior High School, declared that the Ministry of Education will not tolerate long hair in senior high schools.

He warned that allowing long hair today could lead to schools losing control over other aspects of students’ appearance and empowered headmasters and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to enforce rules on student behaviour, grooming, and discipline on campus.

Ashanti NPP youth organisers reject Bryan Acheampong; declare support for Dr Bawumia

The Ashanti Youth group have chosen Dr Bawumia (R) over Bryan Acheampong (L) The Ashanti Youth group have chosen Dr Bawumia (R) over Bryan Acheampong (L)

A major political statement has hit the Ashanti Region as 62 out of 94 current and 34 out of 46 former NPP Youth Organisers have rejected the presidential ambitions of Bryan Acheampong, throwing their “unflinching and unbreakable” support behind the former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s flagbearership contest slated for January 31, 2026.

According to the group, their decision stems from Bryan Acheampong’s public conduct, divisive comments, and political controversies, which they say contradict the values and ideology of the New Patriotic Party.

NPP Flagbearer Race: Bawumia confident of securing 90% of Tano North votes

In a strongly worded statement, the organisers accused the Abetifi MP of “engaging in a campaign of lies and unprovoked attacks” on Dr Bawumia, claiming that Bryan’s rhetoric and political posture were partly responsible for the NPP’s defeat in the last general elections.

They cited several instances they believe angered Ghanaians and turned public opinion against the party, including Bryan Acheampong’s attempted acquisition of SSNIT hotels, which they said remained a damaging topic in the public domain for months.

“The SSNIT hotel saga alone infuriated over 1.6 million contributors who not only voted against the NPP but also joined active campaigns to protest the move,” the statement said.

The organisers also pointed to Bryan’s controversial statement that the NPP would never hand over power to the NDC, describing it as “undemocratic and reckless,” adding that such utterances dented the party’s democratic credentials and alienated floating voters.

“We are not driven by personal dislike or individual sentiments,” the youth organisers insisted. “We are guided by principle, loyalty, and the vision of a united and forward-looking NPP — and that vision, we believe, is embodied by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.”

They have therefore called on the NPP National Council, delegates, and members across the country to reject Bryan Acheampong’s presidential bid, saying the party “cannot afford to reward controversy with leadership.”

The group ended their statement with a firm endorsement, “We stand solidly behind Dr Bawumia, a man of humility, intellect, and integrity, to lead the NPP into victory in 2028 and beyond.”

Fuel prices set to drop from November 1

File photo of a fuel pump File photo of a fuel pump

For the first pricing window of November 2025, motorists can heave a sigh of relief as petroleum product prices are expected to drop significantly at the pumps.

According to the latest outlook report from the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), fuel prices are projected to see notable reductions from November 1, 2025.

Per the report, petrol prices are expected to fall by up to 5.21%, meaning a litre will sell at GH¢12.92, down from the previous GH¢13.93.

Diesel prices are also likely to decline between 6.03% and 8.13%, bringing the price down to about GH¢13.10 per litre from GH¢14.56.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) could see a reduction of up to 6.66%, lowering prices to around GH¢13.60 per kilogram.

Here’s how much you will pay for fuel this week after price reductions

COMAC attributes the projected reductions to declining global crude oil prices and the cedi’s strong appreciation in October.

The cedi has strengthened significantly against the dollar in the last quarter, with analysts crediting the rebound to measures implemented by the Bank of Ghana.

Meanwhile, international Brent crude prices have fallen to a five-month low of $62.82 per barrel.

New prophecy about Benjamin Asare emerges

L-R: Benjamin Asare and Prophet Telvin L-R: Benjamin Asare and Prophet Telvin

Ghanaian prophet, Telvin Sowah has cautioned the Black Stars technical team against dropping goalkeeper Benjamin Asare from the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to him, the Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper’s composure and calmness between the posts have contributed significantly to the team’s success in securing qualification.

The prophet also claimed that Asare has a spiritual influence on the team, which enables the Black Stars to thrive and win matches with ease.

Watch highlights of Black Queens’ 4-0 win over Egypt

Speaking in an interview with Accra FM, Prophet Telvin warned that the national team would lose all their matches at the 2026 World Cup if Asare is replaced by another goalkeeper.

“If they change the goalkeeper, they’ve killed everything. They should maintain the local one. That’s why I urge them to use local players. Since he joined, there’s been calm in the team. He is the spirit of the team, so he should be maintained. If they go shopping and replace him, I’ll reveal how we’ll perform.

“We will lose the first, second, and third matches. Even the weakest team will beat us. There will be just one great team in their group, and they’ll defeat them easily. If they don’t respect the timing, they can forget it,” the prophet cautioned.

This warning comes amid ongoing public debate about Benjamin Asare’s goalkeeping competency, with some urging the technical team to explore other options

Migrant sex offender deported from UK after mistaken release

0

Hadush Kebatu was found guilty of two sexual assaults in Epping, where he had been living in a hotel Hadush Kebatu was found guilty of two sexual assaults in Epping, where he had been living in a hotel

A migrant sex offender who was mistakenly released from prison has been deported from the UK, the government has announced.

Hadush Kebatu was jailed after sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and a woman in Essex while living in an asylum hotel, but was mistakenly set free by prison staff on Friday. He was brought back into custody following a two-day manhunt.

He was removed on a flight to Ethiopia on Tuesday night and landed the following morning, the Home Office said.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said: “Last week’s blunder should never have happened – and I share the public’s anger that it did.”

“I have pulled every lever to deport Mr Kebatu and remove him off British soil. I am pleased to confirm this vile child sex offender has been deported. Our streets are safer because of it,” she added.

Kebatu was deported with no right to return, the Home Office said.

He was meant be taken from HMP Chelmsford to an immigration detention centre to be deported under an early removals scheme (ERS) for foreign national offenders on Friday.

Instead, he was released in what Justice Secretary David Lammy previously described as apparent “human error”.

By the time Essex Police were made aware of the situation shortly before 13:00 BST, he had approached members of the public in the city centre for assistance and boarded a train to London.

He was arrested in north London on Sunday morning after a member of the public contacted the police to say they may have spotted him near Finsbury Park station.

After Kebatu’s deportation, Home Office Minister Alex Norris told BBC Breakfast the situation had “ended in the way it had to end”.

“We accept this was a blunder – we’re really angry about it as I know the public are.”

He said “immediate controls” had been put in place in prisons to avoid a repeat of the incident – including more “stringent” checks when offenders leave prisons for deportation – and that an independent inquiry would identify lessons learned.

The independent investigation will seek to establish how Kebatu was set free and whether staff had sufficient experience, training and technology.

The inquiry chair, former Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Dame Lynne Owens, will also speak to Kebatu’s victims and make recommendations to prevent further mistaken releases, which have risen in recent years.

An urgent review has been ordered into the checks that take place when someone is released from prison. Meanwhile, a prison officer has been suspended and no removals from HMP Chelmsford under the ERS will take place this week.

Kebatu arrived in the UK after crossing the Channel on a small boat on 29 June, having travelled through Sudan, Libya, Italy and France.

His arrest in July sparked a wave of protests outside The Bell Hotel in Epping, which was being used to accommodate asylum seekers including Kebatu.

Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court heard Kebatu tried to kiss a teenage girl in the town centre, and made sexually explicit comments to her.

The following day, he encountered the same girl and tried to kiss her before sexually assaulting her and another woman.

He denied the charges against him but was found guilty of five offences and sentenced to 12 months in custody, including the time he had already time in jail awaiting his trial.

Under the UK Borders Act 2007, a deportation order must be made when a foreign national receives a custodial sentence of at least 12 months.

Minority Slams AG Over Media Prosecution

0

John Darko

The Minority in Parliament has launched a scathing attack on the Attorney General (AG), accusing him of conducting what it calls “press prosecutions” that undermine constitutional guarantees of fair trial and due process.

Addressing journalists in Parliament yesterday, the Legal Advisor to the Minority, John Darko, said the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, had consistently violated the rights of citizens under investigation by publicly labeling them as guilty before the courts had made any determination.

Quoting Article 19(2)(c) of the 1992 Constitution, which states that a person charged with a criminal offence “is presumed innocent until proven guilty,” Mr. Darko said the Attorney General’s recent public engagements, branded as Accountability Series, amounted to “a blatant disregard of the Constitution and an assault on the rule of law.”

According to him, “The Attorney General, by his press prosecution, has prejudiced this all-important constitutional provision. Under the guise of accountability, he has violated the privacy and dignity of individuals by discussing ongoing investigations and pending cases in the media.”

Mr. Darko cited several instances in which the Attorney General had made public pronouncements that, in his view, compromised the integrity of the judicial process.

He referred to comments describing some accused persons as “lawless looters” and members of a “criminal enterprise,” which he said had already convicted them in the court of public opinion.

“Today, many Ghanaians already believe that people like Abdul Wahab, Fazia Seidu Awuni, Chairman Wontumi, Gifty Oware, Osei Assibey Antwi, and Kwabena Adu-Boahen are guilty, even before they open their defence in court,” he said, pointing out, “This is because the Attorney General has successfully pushed that narrative in the media.”

The Minority’s Legal Advisor warned that such media trials risked influencing judges and undermining the impartiality of the courts.

“Our judges live among us, attend the same events, and listen to the same radio shows. When the Attorney General repeatedly holds press conferences and makes sensational allegations, it taints the judicial atmosphere and prejudices the trial,” he argued.

Mr. Darko, who is also the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame, described the situation as a dangerous erosion of constitutional safeguards meant to protect citizens from arbitrary state action.

“In jurisdictions where juries determine facts, cases like these would be relocated to avoid tainted juror pools. But in Ghana, where judges serve as both judges of law and fact, such conduct can seriously compromise justice,” he explained.

He accused the Attorney General of disregarding professional ethics by discussing matters that are sub judice and urged the Ghana Bar Association and the media to call him to order.

“The Attorney General, who is the titular head of the Bar, should be the first to uphold the standards of the legal profession. Instead, he has turned the law into a tool for political theatre,” he lamented.

While reaffirming the Minority’s support for accountability and the fight against corruption, Mr. Darko said the government’s current approach smacked of political bias and selective justice.

He cited cases involving former National Democratic Congress (NDC) officials that were withdrawn under questionable circumstances, contrasting them with ongoing prosecutions of individuals perceived to be aligned with the opposition New Patriotic Party.

“If the Attorney General claims to be committed to accountability, he must also explain why he withdrew cases involving certain NDC officials accused of misappropriating state funds. Why are others being prosecuted in the media while those cases quietly vanish from court?” he questioned.

The Minority called on civil society, traditional authorities, the clergy, and the general public to resist what it described as the “gradual tearing down of Ghana’s constitutional guardrails.”

“We are not against accountability. We are against a biased, populist, and unconstitutional media trial that destroys reputations before the courts have spoken. If this continues unchecked, we risk waking up one day to find that our democracy has been eroded beyond repair,” Mr. Darko concluded.

Health Minister announces four-week plan to restore digital health system

0

Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced a four-week plan to resolve the ongoing breakdown in the country’s electronic healthcare management system.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, October 29, the Health Minister disclosed that a new platform — the Ghana Healthcare Information Management System — has been procured by the government to address the challenges and ensure continuity of healthcare delivery.

The Minister attributed the recent disruption in the National Health Insurance Authority’s (NHIA) electronic hospital management system to Lightwave Health Information Management System Limited, the private company contracted to operate the platform.

He disclosed that various health facilities will be gradually migrated onto the new system within the next four weeks.

“The plan going forward is that in the next one week, we are going to begin with the teaching hospitals, the regional hospitals, and the highly populated district hospitals — to roll them over onto the system.

“In the second week, we’ll be looking at the rest of the district hospitals. And then in the third week, we’ll be looking at the clinics, the health centers, and the CHPS compounds.

“So, I am confidently announcing to the good people of this country that we have a four-week plan that will get us out of this mess,” Mr. Akandoh stated.

The system breakdown has caused widespread delays in record-keeping and patient processing, particularly in the Ashanti Region, where many hospitals have reverted to manual operations. Patients have since expressed frustration over prolonged waiting times and slower service delivery.

The Health Minister assured the public that the government remains committed to restoring and strengthening the nation’s digital health infrastructure.

“The medical records of Ghanaians would never go back to the manual way. We are moving forward — responsibly, confidently, and decisively,” he declared.

Contract and performance lapses

Explaining the cause of the system failure, Mr. Akandoh revealed that in 2019, the government signed a $100 million contract with Lightwave to connect 950 health facilities nationwide to a unified digital health records platform.

“At this point, I would want to share with you the facts, as we inherited them,” he said. “The contract sum was $100 million to connect 950 health facilities. The contract was supposed to expire in 2022.”

He explained that the project was poorly executed, prompting multiple extensions until December 31, 2024, but even after five years, the company had failed to deliver as agreed.

“At the end of the expiration, out of the 950 facilities, only 450 had been connected. Clearly, nobody needs to tell you that the company underperformed,” Mr. Akandoh remarked.

Audit findings and state takeover

The Minister further disclosed that upon assuming office, the government requested that Lightwave hand over control of the system and its infrastructure to the state, as required under the contract. However, complications arose because the system was hosted on a cloud infrastructure in India, limiting Ghana’s access and control.

“We invited the vendor, but the contract had expired, and therefore, they must hand over to the state,”
he explained. “To have access to the medical records of Ghanaians without the state taking control — without even having access to the service — was unacceptable.”

A forensic audit, according to Mr. Akandoh, revealed significant gaps in both the system’s functionality and the hardware supplied under the contract.

The Health Minister reiterated that his ministry is working to fully restore the electronic health management system and prevent a recurrence of such failures.

He emphasized that future digital health projects will be executed with greater transparency, oversight, and accountability.

Why Ghana prints its cedi notes abroad

0

Have you ever wondered where Ghana’s local currency, the cedi, originated, or perhaps the type of machines, locations, and processes involved in printing cedi notes?

The Bank of Ghana has explained why the cedi is currently printed abroad rather than locally.

According to Dominic Owusu, Head of Currency at the Bank of Ghana, the country currently lacks the advanced technology and high-security infrastructure required to produce banknotes that meet international standards.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb Business during the launch of Cedi@60, Owusu noted that outsourcing the printing of cedi notes overseas is a common practice across the continent, as only a few companies worldwide have the expertise needed for such specialised work.

“Currency printing is not only Ghana who prints its currency outside. I think in the world, I can count not more than 20 printers, so it means that every country, some countries, print,” he said.

He added that the Bank is working on long-term plans to build local capacity in collaboration with international partners.

“Even if you have a printing facility, you would still be importing all the raw materials. I can tell you for sure that Nigeria has a printing facility but they import a lot of their money. So, looking at where we are and the rate of technological advancement, you want to relax and then do very good contract obligations with the best printers in the world and print the best currency, which the Ghana cedi is also part of,” he stated.

Ghana is not the only African country that outsources its currency printing. Nations such as Nigeria, Kenya, and Tanzania also rely on external companies for the production of their banknotes.

Traditional leaders hold key to ending illegal mining – Sulemana Braimah

0

The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah, has said only traditional leaders can play a decisive role in ending illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in the country.

According to him, the menace cannot be eradicated through government policies and programmes alone.

He explained that the involvement of chiefs, particularly those in mining communities, is crucial to achieving lasting results in the fight against illegal mining.

“I at this point will believe that our chiefs perhaps have much more to do than even maybe the politicians. I honestly believe that some of our very influential chiefs, the chiefs that we hold in high esteem, if they are to get up one day to say enough is enough, no more illegal mining or even mining on my land, whether people have concessions, large scale, medium or small scales, if some of these chiefs should get up and say for the next one month, I dont want mining on my land, I believe that you have not choice but to pause,” he said on JoyNews’ AM Show on Wednesday.

“And so I think we should really engage with our Chiefs so that we can have them save our us, otherwise the way things are going, people will point to the fact that, once the chiefs are involved, chiefs are allowing it the politicians can do nothing,” he added.

Mr Braimah emphasised that traditional authorities wield significant influence over the various mining lands and communities, and their commitment to responsible mining practices could be the turning point in addressing the environmental destruction caused by galamsey.

‘Don’t lock GH¢60 billion out of the economy’

0

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah is the former Minister for Works and Housing Kojo Oppong Nkrumah is the former Minister for Works and Housing

A former Minister of Works and Housing and Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has cautioned that the government’s current monetary tightening approach could have serious consequences for production and employment.

According to him, the administration’s recent sterilisation policy, which has led to the withdrawal of about GH¢60 billion from circulation, risks stifling private-sector operations and slowing economic growth.

Oppong Nkrumah noted that while the measure may temporarily ease inflationary pressures, its prolonged implementation could drain liquidity from the economy and undermine investment.

Ghana’s reserves hit $12 billion as inflation eases to 9.4% in 2025 – Dr Asiama

“They have taken about GH¢60 billion out of the system and placed it at the Bank of Ghana. That money is now unavailable to drive demand or support production,” he stated, as quoted by citinewsroom.com.

He acknowledged that sterilisation is a recognised part of the central bank’s monetary policy toolkit but argued that its application under the current administration has been excessive.

“You can deploy other instruments to channel liquidity into productive areas. Overusing sterilisation only deprives industries of funds that could support expansion and job creation,” he emphasised.

Oppong Nkrumah contrasted the current approach with that of the Akufo-Addo government, noting that although similar monetary strategies were adopted previously, those interventions reduced inflation from about 54% during the global cost-of-living crisis in 2020 to around 23% by 2024.

He therefore urged the government to balance its inflation-control measures with initiatives that stimulate production and support employment growth.

“The next phase of recovery should focus on boosting production and jobs. Controlling inflation alone is not enough to keep the economy healthy,” he said.

Abusuapanyin will decide who performs Lumba’s widowhood rite

Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu is the head of the Fosu family Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu is the head of the Fosu family

The lawyer representing the family head of the late Highlife legend Daddy Lumba has stated that only the family led by Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu, has the authority to decide whether Akosua Serwaa or Odo Broni will perform the widowhood rites.

Speaking to the media on October 28, 2025 after court hearing, the legal team clarified that the court refrained from making any pronouncement on the issue of who performs the widowhood rite.

I’m not ready for my brother’s funeral on December 6 – Ernestina Fosu

“That is a decision that will be made by the family. That is a determination that the court has declined to make a pronouncement on. It is the family, led by the Abusuapanin, who will decide who performs the widowhood rite,” the lawyer explained.

On October 28, 2025, the Kumasi High Court dismissed an injunction application aimed at halting the burial and funeral arrangements for Highlife legend, Daddy Lumba.

The application, filed by Akosua Serwaa, the late musician’s legal wife, sought to block the head of the Fosu family and another woman also identifying as his spouse from proceeding with the funeral rites.

Akosua Serwaa had argued that she was being sidelined in the funeral preparations for her husband, Daddy Lumba, who passed away on July 26, 2025.

According to her statement of claims, she only discovered the funeral date through social media, accusing Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu and others of excluding her from decisions regarding her late husband’s burial.

Old video of Osei-Asare echoes words she criticised DVLA boss for

Osei-Asare (L) appeared displeased when Neequaye Kotey (L) said he didn't expect a question from her Osei-Asare (L) appeared displeased when Neequaye Kotey (L) said he didn’t expect a question from her

The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament, Abena Osei-Asare, engaged in a heated exchange with the Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, over details of the authority’s proposed digital number plate system.

PAC Chair Osei-Asare sought clarity on the scope of data to be embedded, particularly whether the plates would bear vehicle owners’ surnames, during PAC’s sitting on Monday, October 27, 2025.

“I’m asking you a specific question. Is it going to have the user’s surname on the number plates?” she asked.

In response, the DVLA boss stated, “We don’t put names on number plates… I was wondering why that question. Sorry, but we don’t put names on number plates.”

But the answer did not sit well with Osei-Asare, who was particularly infuriated by Neequaye Kotey saying he did not expect such a question from her.

“You said you don’t expect me to ask you that question… that is what you said. You don’t expect me to ask you that question because people do not put their names on their number plates.

“That is a blatant lie. You have people who pay for specialised number plates, and they have theirs. And if I’m asking you, you just mentioned that there are going to be security features. And I’m asking, is that going to include people’s names on that plate? And you said you don’t expect me to ask you that question. Are you not the DVLA boss?” she fumed.

‘What are you telling me?’ – Watch as Abena Osei Asare loses cool on DVLA boss at PAC sitting

Following the altercation, an old video of the PAC Chair’s appearance before the committee when she was the Minister of State in charge of Finance has gone viral.

In the said video clip, Osei-Asare was asked by the Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Kwame Governs Agbodza, about the procurement of a loan facility.

“Was that loan procured under President Akufo-Addo or under President John Dramani Mahama?” Agbodza asked Abena Asare.

In her response, she uttered almost the same words she criticised the DVLA boss for.

“Honestly, I wasn’t expecting this question from you,” she replied, Agbodza.

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has initiated criminal proceedings against the former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food and Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba, and four others over alleged offences involving stealing, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

Court documents filed at the High Court in Accra list the accused as Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba, Faiza Seidu Wuni, Richard Sam-Asante (currently at large), The Aludiba Foundation, and Energy Partners Limited.

Together, they face 21 counts of various offences, including stealing, conspiracy, defrauding by false pretences, and the willful dissipation of public funds, in violation of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) and the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044).

NAFCO CEO breaks silence on scandal involving former leadership

According to the charge sheet, made available to GhanaWeb, Abdul-Wahab, during his tenure as NAFCO CEO from February 2017 to February 2025, allegedly diverted over GH¢50.8 million of company funds under the pretext of payments to a supplier, Sawtina Enterprise.

He is also accused of transferring an additional GH¢5.49 million to his own company, Aludiba Enterprise, purportedly for the supply of food items to NAFCO.

Co-accused Faiza Seidu Wuni is alleged to have laundered more than GH¢13.2 million through her firm, Fa-Hausa Ventures, and caused a further GH¢4.4 million loss to the state through transactions with NAFCO in the name of Alqarni Enterprise.

The Aludiba Foundation and Energy Partners Limited, both reportedly linked to Abdul-Wahab, have also been charged for their alleged roles in receiving and laundering proceeds from the unlawful transactions.

The Attorney General’s Office maintains that the actions of the accused led to substantial financial losses to the Republic.

The case has been filed at the High Court in Accra, with proceedings expected to begin shortly.

The gap between the Black Queens and Black Stars

0

A GhanaWeb feature by Frank-Kamal Acheampong

The latest pay standoff involving the Black Queens has once again revealed how slowly authorities respond to the women’s team compared to the Black Stars, even though they both represent the same flag and wear the same jersey.

Just days before their 2026 WAFCON qualifier against Egypt in Accra, the Queens boycotted training and threatened not the play the match over unpaid bonuses from the 2024 tournament in Morocco.

Each player was reportedly owed $9,500 from their 2024 WAFCON bronze medal finish, Ghana’s first football medal of any kind since the Black Stars’ AFCON silver in 2015.

It took several rounds of crisis meetings, interventions from the GFA President, Sports Minister Kofi Adams, and even calls from senior football figures, before the issue was finally settled and the players agreed to play.

Watch highlights of Black Queens’ 4-0 win over Egypt

The Queens went on to beat Egypt 4–0 in Accra, sealing a 7–0 aggregate qualification for the 2026 WAFCON, yet again proving their commitment to the national cause, even under frustration.

But this isn’t new.

In February 2024, the Queens nearly boycotted their Olympic qualifier against Zambia over similar unpaid bonuses.

They had gone through two rounds of qualifying for both the Olympics and the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, defeating Benin, Rwanda, and Namibia, yet were still owed $7,500 each.

Their calls for payment were met with silence until the media picked it up.

Go further back to 2016, and history repeats itself. After winning gold at the 2015 All Africa Games in Congo and finishing third at the Women’s Cup of Nations in Cameroon, the Black Queens had to march to the then Ministry of Youth and Sports premises to demand their unpaid bonuses.

Jerseys still on, they stood outside the Ministry demanding what they had earned on the field.

Now in 2025, nearly a decade later, the same situation unfolds again.

The 2014 World Cup bonus saga, when Black Stars players demanded $3 million in cash before playing, remains one of the team’s biggest scandals.

But unlike the women, their grievances were met swiftly. Within hours, the money arrived in Brazil.

And even after receiving it, the Stars still lost to Portugal and exited the tournament.

The Black Queens, on the other hand, have repeatedly proved that their motivation goes beyond money. Even when owed thousands of dollars, they still stepped onto the pitch, fought and delivered.

Against Egypt, both in Cairo and in Accra, they played through frustration, uncertainty, and silence from the top, yet won both legs emphatically.

When the Black Stars face a problem, the response is immediate. From appearance fees to travel arrangements, the system springs into action almost overnight.

But when it comes to the women, their concerns linger, weeks turn into months before anyone takes notice.

And what has Ghana received in return for that urgency?

The Black Stars have cycled through coaches, endured disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaigns, suffered early World Cup exits, and recently failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, marking their first miss in 20 years.

Meanwhile, it’s the Black Queens who have quietly carried the nation’s pride, qualifying for major tournaments, winning crucial games, and bringing home Ghana’s first football medal in nearly a decade.

When the women’s team raises genuine concerns about bonuses or logistics, they should not have to threaten a boycott or make headlines before action is taken.

Because while the Black Stars command global attention, the Black Queens continue to quietly carry Ghana’s football reputation forward, often under tougher conditions and delayed appreciation.

After their 4–0 win over Egypt in Accra, Sports Minister Kofi Adams confirmed that all outstanding bonuses owed to the players have finally been paid.

Speaking to Woezor TV, he said: “Black Queens’ bonuses have been paid. The players have been given their cheques after the game against Egypt in Accra.”

The payment came only after the Queens had already done their part on the pitch.

It is a familiar pattern in Ghana football: the women deliver first, the system responds later.

Cameroon opposition leader to face legal action over election unrest

Many in Cameroon are furious that Paul Biya has won an eighth term as president Many in Cameroon are furious that Paul Biya has won an eighth term as president

Cameroon’s Interior Minister Paul Atanga Nji says opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over allegations he incited “violent post-election demonstrations”.

At least four protesters have been killed during clashes between security forces and opposition supporters since Cameroon’s election on 12 October, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya winning an eighth consecutive term.

Tchiroma Bakary insists he won the election, a claim dismissed by Biya’s ruling party, the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Violent crackdowns by police and security officers on protesters have alarmed the international community, with the UN, African Union and EU calling for restraint.

On Tuesday, Nji accused Tchiroma Bakary of organising what he said were “illegal” protests leading to the loss of lives, and also criticised him for declaring victory in the election.

He added that Tchiroma Bakary’s “accomplices responsible for an insurrectionary plan” will also face legal action.

Paul Biya, who came to power in 1982 and is now the world’s oldest head of state, won the 12 October election with 53.7% of the vote, compared to 35.2% for Tchiroma Bakary, according to Cameroon’s Constitutional Council.

Tchiroma Bakary is yet to respond to the government’s decision to try him, but he had previously told the BBC that he would not accept a stolen vote – and that he was not afraid of being arrested.

On election result day, he said armed men opened fire on protesters assembled near his residence in Garoua, fatally wounding at least two civilians.

On Tuesday, the interior minister revealed that an investigation would be launched into violent incidents before and after the announcement of the election results.

“During these attacks, some of the criminals lost their lives,” he said, without providing a specific number of protesters who have been killed in the clashes.

Nji added that several members of the security forces had also sustained serious injuries.

Although Nji insisted the situation nationwide was now under control, protesters remain active in some parts of the country, especially in Douala and Garoua, where demonstrators mounted roadblocks on Tuesday, and burnt tyres on the streets.

Analysts warn the post-electoral violence could plunge the country into a political crisis.

TADS Fashion Apprenticeship Targets Sex Workers, Kayayei, Others

TADS Fashion apprenticeship centre at Oda

To bridge the inclusivity gap in the fashion sector, TADS Fashion Institute is rolling out its apprenticeship programme to accommodate marginalised persons in fashion mentorship.

The programme targets persons with hearing and speech impairments, head porters (kayayei), as well as sex workers seeking alternative livelihoods.

Also, Zongo youth and community members, artisans, seamstresses, and tailors in villages and towns across Ghana and all youth who are interested in getting vocational training for less, are eligible to enroll for the programme.

Students pay as low as GH¢15 per day, gaining access to equipped training spaces and industrial machines.

According to the Director of the Institute, Eric Grundberry Aidoo-Gabrah, the programme was launched to decentralise access to certified international-standard fashion education across Ghana and make industry-relevant training more affordable and inclusive.

The programme aims to deliver internationally certified fashion training that meets both market standards and industry requirements, as well as empower vulnerable and underprivileged groups through sustainable skill development.

“As part of its expansion strategy, the TADS Fashion Institute is moving beyond its main campuses to establish 500 apprenticeship centres nationwide,” he disclosed.

He mentioned that the programme, since its inception, has created 16 centres which are fully operational nationwide.

Additionally, each centre follows the TADS-approved curriculum, aligned with international fashion education standards.

“Thousands of Ghanaians will gain practical, internationally recognised fashion skills, while existing tailors and seamstresses are upgraded to meet global fashion standards,” he added.

The campaign team of Dr Bryan Acheampong has appealed to its supporters to remain calm and not respond to what it describes as “baseless attacks” from members of the Dr Mahamudu Bawumia campaign in the Ashanti Region.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the team said it had taken note of a press conference held by some youth aligned with Dr Bawumia’s campaign, which allegedly contained “unfortunate insults and false accusations” against Dr Acheampong.

According to the team, the statement released by the Bawumia youth also listed the names of “some unwilling individuals, and even a deceased person,” as signatories — a development it described as deeply regrettable.

“Out of respect for our shared commitment to a united NPP, the values of Dr Bryan Acheampong’s campaign, and following the meeting with Former President Akufo-Addo, where we affirmed the same, we will not dignify these provocations with a response,” the statement said.

The Bryan Acheampong campaign urged all its supporters nationwide to follow suit: “Do not engage, do not respond, and do not return insults.”

Reaffirming its focus on party unity, the team said Dr Acheampong remains committed to “engaging delegates with respect, advancing ideas that strengthen the NPP, and preparing the party for decisive victory in 2028.”

The statement concluded by expressing appreciation to residents of the Ashanti Region — referred to as Asanteman — for what it described as their “massive support” over recent days, and to supporters across the country for their “continued confidence and overwhelming support” for Dr Bryan Acheampong.

At least 64 killed in Rio police raids ahead of climate conferences

0

At least 64 people died on Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro’s most deadly police operation ever, which targeted a major gang days before the city hosts global events related to the United Nations climate summit known as COP30.

Police have often conducted large-scale operations against criminal groups ahead of major events in Rio, which hosted the 2016 Olympics, the 2024 G20 summit and the BRICS summit in July.

Next week, Rio hosts the C40 global summit of mayors tackling climate change and Prince William’s Earthshot Prize, which will feature celebrities including pop star Kylie Minogue and four-time Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel.

The programming is part of the run-up to COP30, the United Nations climate summit held in the Amazon city of Belem from November 10 to November 21.

The death toll confirmed by Rio Governor Claudio Castro on Tuesday, which included four police officers, was more than twice Rio’s most deadly previous police operation.

“We stand firm confronting narcoterrorism,” Castro wrote on social media about the operation, which he said involved 2,500 security personnel across the Alemao and Penha favela complexes, near the city’s international airport.

Rio’s favelas are poor, densely populated settlements woven through the city’s hilly oceanside terrain. Smoke rose early on Tuesday over the iconic skyline as gangs burnt cars to slow the advance of armoured vehicles while bursts of gunfire rang out.

Police released videos showing suspects using drones armed with grenades against the police. The footage also showed armed men fleeing into a forested area near the operation.
After the most intense fighting subsided, a Reuters journalist saw police from a special operations unit rounding up dozens of shirtless men. Sobbing family members gathered outside a public hospital, attending to those injured.

The Rio state government called Tuesday’s operation the largest ever targeting the Comando Vermelho gang.
Justice Minister Ricardo Lewandowski said the federal government had not received any request for support from state authorities prior to the “bloody” operation, adding he had been following developments through media reports.

The clashes disrupted the routines of dozens of schools and medical facilities, redirected bus routes and snarled traffic across several neighborhoods in the state capital.

Castro confirmed 81 arrests as authorities sought to serve 250 arrest and search warrants in an operation targeting alleged drug kingpins and their money laundering operations.

However, some civil society groups criticised the heavy casualties in a military-style operation. Carolina Ricardo, executive director at security think tank Sou da Paz, called it a tragedy.

“This is a completely failed approach, because it does not actually target the links in the drug production chain,” she said.

DMT Collateral is a Ghanaian company DMT Collateral is a Ghanaian company

Ghanaian firm, DMT Collateral, has been named collateral manager for Dangote Refinery in Lagos, Nigeria, one of Africa’s largest industrial projects.

The appointment was made by a consortium of international lenders including Afreximbank, Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), Standard Bank South Africa, and Access Bank Plc Nigeria.

Paul Sannie Minlah, Managing Director of DMT, said the appointment reflects Africa’s growing capacity to deliver world-class collateral management services.

He noted that the company’s role in the Dangote Refinery project underscores its commitment to safeguarding investments and supporting industrial efficiency.

“With this prestigious appointment, DMT Collateral is not just managing collateral — it is managing Africa’s future. The company’s involvement in the Dangote Refinery project highlights its role in safeguarding investments, boosting industrial efficiency, and strengthening confidence in Africa’s ability to deliver world-class financial oversight,” he said.

This development marks a significant milestone for DMT, which was founded in Ghana in 2009 and has since grown into a Pan-African player in commodity and structured trade finance.

The company is known for its work in managing complex transactions and ensuring transparency and reliability in financial operations across the continent.

DMT previously handled major assignments, including a 2019 contract with Vitol and Tema Oil Refinery to manage the processing of 8 million barrels of crude oil.

In 2022, the Bank of Ghana selected DMT to verify and monitor oil imports under the government’s Gold-for-Oil Programme, aimed at stabilizing fuel supply and preserving foreign reserves.

DMT continues to expand its footprint on the continent while maintaining its status as a fully Ghanaian-owned and ISO-certified company.

Its involvement in the Dangote Refinery project is seen as further evidence of the growing role African institutions are playing in large-scale infrastructure and financial oversight.

Michael Blackson Splits From Fiancée

Michael Blackson and Rada with their baby

Ghanaian-American comedian, Michael Blackson, has split from his fiancée, Rada Darling, just months after welcoming their first child together.

In a post shared on October 27, 2025, Blackson revealed that while celebrating the birth of his son with Rada in June 2025, another close family friend, whom he had known for over five years, also gave birth to his child — a baby boy named King Kweku Blackson — in August 2025.

The revelation, he said, brought both “joy and pain,” ultimately leading to the end of his relationship with Rada.

Blackson, who proposed to Rada in 2021 during a live broadcast of The Breakfast Club, already had three older sons before the two new additions — making him a father of five boys.

He apologised publicly to Rada, writing:

“God has blessed me, but in blessing me came a lot of pain. My two boys have brought me joy but also cost me my fiancée. My apologies to Rada, and I hope she forgives me for the pain I’ve brought to her.”

However, Rada responded shortly after with a powerful message of her own, calling his post “the most pathetic apology ever.”

“I don’t normally respond but let’s just agree that was the most pathetic post or apology ever. I’m walking in peace, guided by God’s grace. My energy belongs to my 4-month-old son, not to negativity.

People always tell me they are embarrassed for me… but for me, when love runs that deep, you stop seeing the man and start seeing the boy who just wanted to be loved — and that’s what breaks you. I didn’t just love, I understood — the pain, the innocence, the child in him.

With that said, I take full accountability for staying in the circus too long. His type was never me because I’m a real woman. This is what happens when you hold a man down 100%.”

Rada’s post has drawn widespread attention, with fans praising her strength and honesty as she moves forward from the highly publicised breakup.

Mr Fiable further appealed to the people of Twifo- Hemang-Lower- Denkyira to focus on unity and development rather than misinformation.

His mission, he stated, was to bring meaningful development to the district and to leave behind a legacy of integrity and progress, not an abysmal record of failure.

Ex-Buffer Stock Boss, wife face 24 charges for alleged GH¢78m theft

0

The Attorney-General has filed multiple criminal charges against former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food and Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba, his wife Faiza Seidu Wuni, and three others over the alleged theft and laundering of more than ₵78 million in public funds.

The accused persons, including The Aludiba Foundation, Energy Partners Limited, and Richard Sam-Asante (who is currently at large), face 24 counts ranging from stealing, money laundering, and fraudulently causing financial loss to the Republic, to using public office for profit and intentional dissipation of public funds.

The case, filed at the High Court (Criminal Division), Accra, details a complex scheme of embezzlement and financial manipulation allegedly carried out between February 2017 and February 2025, during Hanan Aludiba’s tenure as NAFCO CEO.

Alleged Diversion of Funds

According to the charge sheet, Hanan Abdul-Wahab is accused of stealing more than ₵50.8 million from NAFCO through payments purportedly made to Sawtina Enterprise, a company owned by one of NAFCO’s regional managers, James Tieku-Apawu.

Investigations by the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) revealed that about 80% of the transfers made to Sawtina had no corresponding supply of goods, with over ₵50 million allegedly traced back to Hanan, his wife, and related companies.

Payments to Family Businesses

Further investigations uncovered that Hanan caused additional payments of:

₵5.49 million to Aludiba Enterprise, his personal business;

₵4.4 million to Alqarni Enterprise, a company owned by his wife, Faiza Wuni; and

₵251,050 to Energy Partners Limited, a company he also controls.

EOCO found that none of these entities were licensed suppliers of NAFCO and that no legitimate transactions supported the payments.

Money Laundering and Property Acquisitions

The prosecution alleges that between 2020 and 2022, Hanan transferred over ₵13.2 million from NAFCO funds into Fa-Hausa Ventures, a business registered in his wife’s name. Both Hanan and Faiza were signatories to the company’s bank account.

Investigators say these funds were used to purchase properties and investments in Accra, Tamale, and other locations, as well as to finance The Aludiba Foundation, which prosecutors claim was used as a conduit to launder proceeds of crime.

EOCO began investigating after receiving intelligence earlier this year that Hanan had “embezzled hundreds of millions of Ghana cedis” during his time as CEO.

He was arrested on June 25, 2025, at his residence at Chain Homes, Airport East, Accra, and later granted police inquiry bail. His wife and other associates were also arrested in coordinated operations in Tamale and Accra.

The Head of Finance at NAFCO, Richard Sam-Asante, who allegedly co-signed fraudulent cheques and facilitated some of the payments, remains at large.

Charges and Next Steps

Among the 24 counts filed, key charges include:

Stealing (Section 124(1) of Act 29)

Fraudulently causing financial loss to the Republic

Money laundering (under Act 1044)

Using public office for profit (Section 179C of Act 29)

Intentional dissipation of public funds (SMCD 140)

The case has been assigned to the High Court (Criminal Division) in Accra.
The prosecution will call multiple witnesses, including EOCO investigators and bank officials, to testify.

The matter was filed and signed by the Attorney-General on October 28, 2025.

Agbeko opens up on living on the streets and battling memory loss after drug addiction

Agbeoko is a Ghanaian rapper Agbeoko is a Ghanaian rapper

Ghanaian rapper Agbeko has opened up about the dark period of his life when drug addiction forced him to live on the streets and struggle with severe memory loss.

Speaking in an interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM on October 28, 2025, Agbeko recounted how his dependence on drugs caused him to lose everything he had worked for, including his home, savings, and social connections.

“I was doing drugs. I couldn’t get myself a place anymore; I had no means to. I lost everything that was holding me up, so I found myself on the street,” he said.

He admitted that despite earning some money from his music, the income was not enough to sustain him, as most of it went into survival and studio expenses.

“I would be lying if I said I didn’t get money from music. Though at that time, it wasn’t paying much, but the few shows I played, whatever amount of money I get, I divided it into parts. I was living alone, so I paid the bills.

‘Unkempt looking’ Agbeko spotted begging Andy Dosty for money

“Some of the money went into bills, some went into music, which was studio bookings and cutting promo CDs, and the other went into feeding. That’s how I managed the little I made from music,” he stated.

To support himself further, the ‘Wototome’ hitmaker stated that he ventured into small-scale trading.

“I was into indoor boutique where I sold clothes, and I sometimes carried the things around for people to buy,” he shared.

Agbeko also disclosed that during this difficult time, he began experiencing serious memory loss, which affected his relationships and how people perceived him.

“Along the line, too, I realised I had an issue with memory loss. It’s serious, so I feel like I need medical attention too. I started forgetting people I knew.

“When people who support me see me on the street and I don’t return their energies, they think I was being arrogant, but they don’t know what I’m going through, so I don’t blame anyone,” he added.

Agbeko made headlines again recently when photos of him living on the streets popped up, drawing a lot of comments from people who knew how vibrant he was when he was actively in music.
