Fuel prices drop for third consecutive time

0

Consumers of petroleum products can expect some relief as fuel prices at the pumps record a marginal decline for the third consecutive time.

This development comes two days into the commencement of the second pricing window for March.

Total Energies has led the latest adjustment, lowering the price of both petrol and diesel from GHS15.79 per liter in the first pricing window of March to GHS15.49 per litre for the second pricing window of March.

This marks the third consecutive reduction after prices began to fall in the second pricing window of February.

The reductions are being attributed to falling crude oil prices on the international market and the recent relative stability of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar.

This development signals a potential trend, with other oil marketing companies expected to follow suit in the coming days.

The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMC) had earlier forecasted a potential drop in fuel prices in the second pricing window for March, driven by a decline in global crude oil costs.

Data from the Chamber revealed that crude oil prices fell from $75.49 per barrel to $71.94 per barrel, marking a 4.16% decrease.

This drop is attributed to concerns over the impact of escalating trade tensions under US President Donald Trump’s administration, which have cast a bearish outlook on global economic growth and oil demand.

Mahama’s replacement of senior Generals hurts military morale – Ntim Fordjour

0

Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour

The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has criticised President John Mahama’s decision to restructure the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

In a social media post, he expressed concern over the dismissal of the Chief of Defence Staff, all Service Chiefs, and 12 senior military officers of the rank of Major-General and above.

He argued that many of these officers still had up to six years before retirement, and their premature removal would cost the public purse millions in gratuities.

President Mahama announced the new appointments on Monday, 17th March 2025, as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s defence architecture.

The changes, set to take effect on 24th March 2025, include Brigadier General William Agyapong as Acting Chief of the Defence Staff and Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu as Acting Chief of Army Staff.

Other key appointments include Commodore Godwin Livinus Blessing as Acting Chief of Naval Staff, Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong as Acting Chief of Air Staff, and Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan as Acting Chief of Staff.

Fordjour, however, criticised the move, arguing that replacing experienced senior officers with lower-ranked Brigadier Generals (1-star Generals) weakens the military’s command structure.

He noted that Ghana had recently expanded its military capacity, upgrading key units such as armour, artillery, signals, and engineering to brigade status, which justified having a 4-star General as Chief of Defence Staff.

He contended that Mahama’s decision had effectively reversed these advancements by placing a 1-star General at the top of the hierarchy.

Describing the move as “backward, costly, and far-fetched,” Fordjour warned that it could significantly impact military morale and operational efficiency.

He emphasised that Ghana’s defence strategy should prioritise stability and experience rather than abrupt leadership changes.

“President Mahama has today dismissed Chief of Defence Staff and all Service Chiefs in Ghana Armed Forces and all 12 most senior military officers of the rank of Major-General equivalent and above (i.e all 2-star Generals, 3-star Generals and 4 star General). Most of these Generals by rank and age, have six (6) more years to serve in the military before their retirement.”

“What this implies on the public purse is that gratuities will have to be paid running into millions of cedis due to the egoistic premature dismissals of senior ranked generals, replacing them with lower ranked Brigadier Generals and equivalent (1-star Generals) at the command of Ghana Armed Forces.”

NDC government wants to destroy Ghanaian youth by forcing them into betting – NPP MP

Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah, the Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South West Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah, the Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South West

Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah, the Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South West, has accused the ruling government of encouraging Ghanaians to engage in betting by abolishing the controversial betting tax.

According to him, the president and the finance minister are pushing workers to abandon their jobs and turn to betting as a means of making money.

He argued that while betting may yield financial gains for some, the youth should be discouraged from engaging in it. However, he believes the government’s decision to remove betting taxes will only encourage young people to abandon their jobs and focus on gambling.

Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa TV on March 17, 2025, he stated, “The cancellation of the betting tax says a lot to us…betting is a scam. We should not encourage the idea of abolishing the betting tax.

“I will say the NDC government wants to destroy Ghanaian youth by forcing them into betting. Now, even old women and men will engage in betting. It is clear that the NDC government wants to promote gambling.”

When asked if the youth in his constituency would quit farming to engage in betting due to the scrapping of the tax, he responded, “Obviously, the majority of them will go and bet.”

‘Tax refunds are part of government revenue’ – Former Finance Minister refutes misuse claims

0

Former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has dismissed allegations that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) misused tax revenue funds during its administration.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Monday, March 17, he strongly defended the government’s handling of the tax refund account, stressing that its use was in line with legal provisions governing public funds.

“Well, I didn’t know what the Minister wanted to say because the tax refund account is part of government revenue, right? It’s always been part of government revenue collected by the Ghana Revenue Authority,” Dr Amin Adam stated.

He explained that 6% of government revenue is earmarked for tax refunds, but any portion of that which remains unused is legally permitted to be used as part of the government’s general revenue.

“It is set aside to pay tax refunds, and to the extent that part of it is not used for tax refunds, the law allows that to be used as regular revenue of the government,” he clarified.

Addressing concerns about whether the funds were diverted inappropriately, he pointed out that Ghana operates a single Treasury account system, meaning funds can be moved around as necessary for government spending.

“You know that, as we say often, money is tangible, right? You move money around from different accounts because it’s a pool.

“We are running a single Treasury account system, so irrespective of what the account name is, the Controller General can fall on it when the need arises,” he explained.

When asked about the legal framework surrounding the tax refund account and whether unused funds should be returned to the consolidated fund, Dr Amin Adam reaffirmed that the process is standard practice.

“But the consolidated fund is what I’m talking about. You have to spend it, and so I don’t know what the finance minister means by that. If it’s been spent, it has been spent,” he said.

He challenged critics to provide evidence that the funds were misused, stating that the real question should be whether the money was channelled through the proper government accounts.

“Ask them if it was spent through the consolidated fund or not. Well, I’m waiting for them to come out with what they think we have spent it on,” he challenged.

Responding to claims that the funds were used to pay for contracts awarded by the state, particularly SML, he pointed out that all government spending—including on infrastructure and public services—is executed through contracts.

“But what is the consolidated fund used for? The fund is used to pay for the execution of contracts. All the projects that are being done across the country are done through contracts. And when the contracts are executed, they are paid for—the road contracts, services contracts, and others,” he stated.

Dr. Amin Adam’s comments come in the wake of scrutiny over the NPP administration’s financial management, particularly regarding tax revenue.

While the current Finance Minister has raised concerns over the use of the tax refund account, Dr Amin Adam insists that the funds were legally utilised and accounted for, reinforcing the argument that there was no mismanagement or diversion.

Quickly scrap Dampare’s centralized police communication – Sampson Lardi Anyenini to New IGP

Sampson Lardi Anyenini [L] and IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno Sampson Lardi Anyenini [L] and IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno

Private legal practitioner Samson Lardi Anyenini has urged the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to immediately discontinue the centralized police communication system introduced by the immediate past IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

During Dr. Dampare’s tenure, police communications were centralized as part of efforts to streamline information flow and prevent miscommunication.

However, this development faced public backlash, as many saw the initiative as limiting the work of police officers trained to handle police communications.

Commenting on the issue in a post on Facebook, Samson Lardi Anyenini, who is also a broadcaster, urged COP Tetteh Yohuno to allow police officers trained in public communication to freely perform the duties for which taxpayers pay them.

“Pray – Dear IGP, quickly dismantle the centralized police communication introduced by Dampare. We did everything, but he refused to change it. Let those close to the action be the ones to speak, and not a PR officer sitting in Accra, far removed from the issues the people seek information about. Let them interact and take questions, not just issue statements from Accra.”

President John Dramani Mahama, on March 13, 2025, appointed COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

In a statement issued by the Minister of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President, in accordance with the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, made the appointment.

*”President John Dramani Mahama, in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector-General of Police.

He replaces COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

COP Yohuno brings forty years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service,”* the statement read.

9th Parliamentary Service Board inaugurated

0

The 9th Parliamentary Service Board has officially been inaugurated.

They have been tasked to oversee the welfare, administration, and operational matters of Ghana’s Parliament.

The new board has sitting and former MPs as board members.

The Board is chaired by Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.

The Board’s main mandate includes overseeing the welfare of MPs and parliamentary staff, managing Parliament’s administrative matters, and addressing operational challenges.

Below is the list of the Board

Alban Bagbin – Speaker of Parliament and Chairman of the Board

Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror – Clerk to Parliament

Mahama Ayariga – MP for Bawku Central and Majority Leader

Alexander Afenyo-Markin – MP for Effutu and Minority Leader

Angela Oforiwa Alorwu-Tay – Former MP for Afadjato South

Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah – Former MP for New Juaben South

Speaking at the inauguration of the Parliamentary Service Board for the ninth Parliament, Bagbin asked the Majority Leader to prioritise efforts to enhance security measures within the precincts of the House.

“One of the challenges that need to be addressed is to secure the parliamentary enclave to ensure the safety of members and staff. This has been a worrying matter for parliament for some time now; we are actually insecure here.

“We are not safe. Sometimes people can come in and attack us or staff, and anytime there is an attempt to apprehend them, they scale over the wall and escape into the forest. This is vital for the functioning of parliament. I believe the ninth board will work assiduously to make this a reality.

“I will call on the leaders of the house to follow up on this matter,” he stated.

Call for new Chamber, MPs’ hospital a misplaced priority – Inusah Fuseini

0

Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, has strongly opposed the proposal for a new parliamentary chamber aimed at enhancing security and a dedicated hospital for MPs.

He described the initiative as a misplaced priority, arguing that Ghana is currently bankrupt and cannot afford such an expenditure.

His comments follow a proposal made by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, calling for the establishment of a new parliamentary chamber to enhance the security of Members of Parliament (MPs). The Effutu MP also proposed a dedicated hospital for MPs arguing that the health of MPs must be prioritised.

The proposal was put forward during the inauguration of the Parliamentary Service Board for the ninth Parliament on Monday, March 17, where Afenyo emphasized the need for new infrastructure that reflects the importance of the legislative arm of government.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, March 17, Fuseini insisted that such a decision should only be considered in the future when the country has achieved economic stability, balanced its budget, and made significant savings.

“The call for a new chamber at this crucial time in our economy is very misplaced. Even in 2019, when the country was not bankrupt, civil societies rejected the idea, arguing that it was not the time for a new chamber but rather a time to save the country from economic downturns.

“So to make that statement now, when the country is bankrupt and under IMF support and programs, is shocking. I don’t think such a proposal should have come from the Minority Leader at all.

“A new chamber does not protect MPs in any way. Since the day I entered Parliament until today, there has been a massive improvement in security. Scanners have been installed at both gates of Parliament to prevent people from entering without being scanned.

“It wasn’t like that before, so clearly, there have been improvements. Maybe in the future, when our financial situation improves, and we can balance our budget, make savings, and the country is prosperous, then we can consider spending money on such things,” He said.

As a concerned citizen, I am compelled to address a growing trend in Ghana. The increasing prevalence of cross-dressing among male content creators in Ghana’s entertainment industry has raised important questions about the potential consequences for our society. What was once considered a taboo is now being normalized, and it’s becoming more common to see men dressed in women’s clothing, claiming it’s all in the name of content creation. But is it really just harmless fun, or is there more to it?

While some may argue that cross-dressing is a harmless form of self-expression, I firmly believe that it can have far-reaching and unintended consequences. If left unchecked, this trend may contribute to a gradual shift in societal norms, potentially leading to the normalization of behaviors that are not aligned with our cultural values.

Moreover, it is possible that some individuals who engage in cross-dressing may be using it as a means to conceal their true identities or intentions. This could include individuals who identify as LGBTQ+, who may be using content creation as a platform to promote their lifestyle.

The potential impact on our children cannot be overstated. Exposure to cross-dressing and LGBTQ+ content at a young age can lead to confusion and uncertainty about their own identities. It is our responsibility as a society to ensure that our children are protected from influences that may harm their emotional and psychological well-being. We must take a proactive approach to addressing this issue, and that starts with being aware of the content our children are consuming and having open and honest discussions with them about the potential implications.

As parents, it’s essential to take an active role in monitoring the content our children are exposed to. We must be aware of the potential risks associated with cross-dressing content and take steps to protect our children. This includes having open and honest discussions with them about the potential implications, setting clear boundaries and guidelines for what is acceptable, and being mindful of the content they consume.

To mitigate these risks, I strongly advocate for the legislative body of Ghana to pass a bill that regulates cross-dressing in content creation. Such legislation should aim to:

1. Prohibit the promotion of cross-dressing as a normal or desirable behavior for males.

2. Establish clear guidelines for content creators to ensure that their work does not perpetuate harmful or confusing messages about gender and identity.

3. Provide education and awareness programs to help parents, educators, and the broader public understand the potential implications of cross-dressing in content creation.

By taking proactive steps to address this issue, we can help protect the well-being and innocence of our children, while also preserving the cultural values that are essential to our society.

I urge our lawmakers to take this matter seriously and work towards passing legislation that promotes a safe and healthy environment for all Ghanaians.

No real jobs in 2025 budget, only replacement hiring – Amin Adam

0

Former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has raised serious concerns about the 2025 budget, particularly its impact on public sector employment.

He criticized the government’s decision to impose a net freeze on public sector hiring, calling it a major setback for Ghanaian youth seeking jobs.

Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, March 17, Dr. Amin Adam questioned the feasibility of the job creation promises outlined in the budget.

“The jobs that the budget promises to deliver—I don’t think they are going to deliver those jobs. I will be very happy if those jobs are delivered so that those Ghanaians, the youth that don’t have jobs, can have jobs,” he stated.

He explained that the net freeze on employment means only replacement hiring will take place, effectively reducing opportunities for new job seekers.

“By declaring a net freeze on employment in the public sector, they are simply telling Ghanaian youth who have hopes of getting employment in the public sector that they will not get that,” he remarked.

Dr. Amin Adam also accused the government of using the freeze as a means to replace legally employed individuals with their own supporters, rather than genuinely creating new jobs.

“When we are talking about job creation, we are talking about new jobs and not sacking people who were employed legally and replacing them with other people. They are all Ghanaians,” he emphasized.

His comments add to the ongoing debate over the effectiveness of the 2025 budget in tackling Ghana’s economic and employment challenges.

Head potter on bail for stabbing driver

0

A 28-year-old head porter, Kennedy Dadzie, has been granted GHC50,000.00 bail with two sureties by the Amasaman Circuit Court for allegedly stabbing a driver.

The Court, presided over by Enid Marful-Sau, ordered that Dadzie’s sureties provide valid national identity cards to the Court’s Registry.

Dadzie denied stabbing Kofi Owusu in the arm and was asked to reappear before the court on April 22, 2025.

Police Chief Inspector Salifu Nashiru stated that both the complainant, Owusu, a driver, and Dadzie, a head porter, reside in Treba.

He narrated that in July 2024, Mr. Owusu realized his Samsung A13 phone was missing.

Upon questioning his wife, she allegedly mentioned seeing Dadzie smoking behind their building at midnight.

Owusu reportedly warned Dadzie to stay away from the back of his house, which angered Dadzie, leading to threats.

The Court was informed that on August 5, 2024, while Owusu and one Kwame were at a park in Treba, Dadzie allegedly passed by and threatened them.

A heated argument followed, during which Dadzie reportedly pulled a jackknife and attempted to stab Kwame.

Owusu chased him with a stick, causing Dadzie to flee.

Shortly after, while Owusu was heading home, Dadzie allegedly emerged and stabbed him in the left arm before escaping.

Chief Inspector Nashiru disclosed that Dadzie was arrested on March 10, 2025, following a tip-off.

During interrogation, he reportedly admitted to the offence and was subsequently arraigned.

Amin Adam commends Ato Forson for abolishing E-Levy, Betting tax

0

Former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has commended his successor, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, for abolishing certain taxes introduced by the previous administration.

In the 2025 budget presented on March 11, Dr. Forson announced the removal of taxes such as the betting tax and E-Levy, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on Ghanaians.

In an interview with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s “The Point of View” on Monday, March 17, Dr. Amin Adam praised these tax cuts. But he expressed concerns over the substantial increase in the Growth and Sustainability Levy on mining companies from 1% to 3%.

He cautioned that heavily taxing sectors crucial to economic growth, like mining, could be counterproductive

“I think that he has delivered, but I think that he has also imposed additional taxes. For example, the Growth and Sustainability Levy increased by 200% from 1 to 3%. If the sector that gives you growth is the sector that you are heavily taxing more, then what kind of economics are you doing?

“I’m not saying don’t tax extractive industry, but if you are alluding to the fact that, that is what generates our growth, why would you want to tax the hen that lays the golden egg?

“We can’t wait” – Amin Adam justifies early opposition to NDC govt

0

Former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has stressed the need for the Minority New Patriotic Party (NPP) to offer prompt and constructive criticism of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, emphasizing the urgency of addressing emerging challenges.

His comments come in response to calls for the NPP to allow the new government time to settle before beginning its opposition.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday, March 17, Dr. Amin Adam argued that delaying opposition would be detrimental, given the pressing issues already unfolding.

“There is so much at stake for people to say wait until such a time before you start opposition. As we are already talking, you can see that things are happening—some of them unfavorable things,” he stated.

He raised concerns over job losses, particularly the dismissal of individuals who were lawfully employed.

“So should we wait when people are being sacked from their jobs—people who have been legitimately employed?” he questioned.

Dr. Amin Adam also criticized the government’s approach to illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” which has caused severe environmental damage.

Referring to President Mahama’s earlier promises to address the issue, he remarked:

“The Ghanaian people bashed the NPP so much about the galamsey. Mahama said he can address it.

“At the beginning of his term, we are seeing the lack of seriousness, the lack of commitment. So should we wait until the water bodies are further destroyed before we start criticizing?”

His remarks highlight the growing debate over the opposition’s role in holding the new administration accountable from the outset.

Popular Ghanaian businessman and fashion icon Richard Brown, widely known as Osebo the Zaraman, has advised men to stop wasting time and resources on ungrateful women.

According to Osebo, men should be cautious about investing in women who do not reciprocate their efforts or show genuine interest in them.

He particularly warned against pursuing women who ignore calls and messages, emphasizing that such behavior is a clear sign of disinterest.

“When a woman does not give you attention, it means she is giving it to someone else. A woman who truly values you will make time for you,” he stated.

To support his advice, Osebo shared a real-life example of a close friend who faced emotional distress due to a woman he was interested in.

Speaking with strong emotions, he revealed that the experience left his friend heartbroken, serving as a lesson for other men to recognize the warning signs early and walk away before it is too late.

His remarks have since sparked discussions online, with some agreeing with his perspective, while others argue that relationships require patience and understanding.

Majority Leader opposes proposal for MPs’ hospital and new chamber

0

Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga

A proposal by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for the establishment of a dedicated hospital for Members of Parliament (MPs) and the construction of a new parliamentary chamber has been met with strong opposition from Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga.

The debate emerged during the swearing-in of the Parliamentary Service Board on Monday, March 17, where Afenyo-Markin also a Member of Parliament for Effutu argued that lawmakers required a specialized healthcare facility to cater to their medical needs.

He also reignited discussions on the need for a new parliamentary chamber, emphasizing that both initiatives were essential to improving MPs’ working conditions.

However, Mahama Ayariga dismissed the proposals, citing Ghana’s economic struggles as a key reason why such projects would be unjustifiable at this time.

He stressed that given the country’s pressing financial challenges, prioritizing a new chamber and an MPs-only hospital was unwarranted.

Driver arrested on his wedding day over GH¢352,000 visa fraud in court

0

Samuel Issah Abdulai, a 28-year-old driver who was nabbed on his wedding day for fraud, has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Abdulai is alleged to have collected GH¢352,000 from three complainants under the pretext of securing visas for them but failed to do so.

The accused promised to secure electronic visas for Mongolia, Georgia, Albania, and Malaysia.

Charged with three counts of defrauding by false pretenses and forgery of documents, Abdulai has pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided over by Samuel Bright Acquah, has admitted the accused to bail in the sum of GH¢150,000 with three sureties, one of which must be justified.

The accused person was ordered to report to the police once every two weeks.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Daniel Danku, said the complainants—Ohenewa Sarah and Matilda Ayaaba, both traders, and Aisha Ahmed, a businesswoman—all reside in Accra.

Chief Inspector Danku said Abdulai resides in Nkawie in the Ashanti Region.

According to the prosecution, between September and December 2024, the accused person and his accomplice, Antwi, posted advertising flyers on the internet soliciting persons interested in traveling to countries such as Belarus, Andorra, Albania, and Malaysia for work.

At that time, the accused person claimed to be in Belarus.

The court heard that the accused was later contacted by the three complainants on different occasions, and he convinced them that he could help them acquire visas to the aforementioned countries.

The prosecution said Abdulai then demanded and collected GH¢47,000 from Sarah Ohenewa, the first complainant, GH¢55,000 from Matilda Ayaaba, the second complainant, and GH¢250,000 from the third complainant, Aisha Ahmed, who had collected the money from eleven other individuals.

After receiving the money via his mobile money number, which bears his name, Abdulai went into hiding.

The court heard that in December 2024, Abdulai resurfaced and sent some documents he claimed were electronic visas to the complainants via WhatsApp.

The prosecution said the complainants suspected foul play and started looking for the accused person.

The complainants and other alleged victims of Abdulai eventually arrested him at his wedding ceremony in Nkawie, Ashanti Region, and handed him over to the police at Teshie.

Further checks on the electronic visas at the Immigration DFEC Unit revealed that all the visas were fake, the prosecution said.

A plea for safer roads in Ghana; building the Ghana we want.

0

“Roads are meant to be travelled, not to be buried upon.” This truth echoes painfully in the hearts of many Ghanaians who have lost loved ones to preventable road accidents. As a young man, I vividly recall a horrific experience during my first year at Tamale Senior High School.

While traveling back from Navrongo to school, our commercial Benz bus suffered a tire blowout and veered off the road into a farm near Walewale. Many passengers perished, and the few of us who survived were rushed to the Walewale Government Hospital. The trauma of that experience lingers.

Years later, in 2018, I faced an even more painful tragedy. My younger brother, Private Umar Farouk Yakubu, had just achieved his dream of joining the Ghana Army after multiple attempts and enduring rigorous training at the Army Training School.

Tragically, on the day he and his colleagues were transported from Shai Hills Army Training School to Ho’s 66 Artillery Regiment, their vehicle was involved in an accident. He was flown to the 37 Military Hospital, but his young life was cut short.

Today, his body rests at the Military Cemetery at Airport Hills, a cruel reminder of the dangers that persist on our roads. May Almighty Allah grant him and to all those lives lost due to road accidents Jannah.

I am not alone in this grief. Countless Ghanaians have buried their loved ones due to preventable road accidents. Ghana’s road safety crisis has become an urgent matter demanding immediate attention. Our roads, once symbols of connectivity and progress, have turned into death traps littered with hazards that could be avoided with responsible governance and practical interventions.

Under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, road safety was compromised by the unchecked erection of advertising billboards in the middle of major roads across the capital city, Accra.

These billboards, positioned dangerously on routes like Obasanjo Highway, Madina-Legon Road, and the 37-Adenta Road, pose serious risks to drivers and pedestrians alike. The situation becomes even more treacherous at night when non-existent street lighting makes visibility difficult.

The problem extends beyond billboards. Commercial vehicles or ‘trotros’ that ply routes from areas such as 37, Osu, Kaneshie, Ashaiman, Madina, Circle, Accra, Tema Station, Odorkor, Kasoa, and many others, are often death traps before passengers even board them.

Many of these vehicles are poorly maintained, yet they pass their roadworthy tests under questionable circumstances. Additionally, the prevalence of broken-down vehicles and abandoned vehicles left along busy roads exacerbates the problem. It is not uncommon to find vehicles stuck for days on end along highways, with little effort made to clear them.

Another critical factor contributing to the carnage on our roads is the widespread use of uncertified roadside mechanics.

While these mechanics serve a crucial purpose for the majority of Ghanaians who cannot afford expensive repairs, there is an urgent need for regulation to ensure proper training and certification. Vehicle maintenance records should be required during every roadworthiness certification to guarantee public safety.

Tire safety is another area of concern. Many motorists, driven by economic challenges, opt for cheap, used, and often dangerous tires.

To address this, the Road Safety Authority must strengthen its inspectorate division, recruit more qualified personnel, and conduct regular inspections of tire dealers to ensure only quality tires are sold. At the same time, the government should consider reducing excessive taxes on new tires to make them affordable for the average Ghanaian.

Furthermore, we must address the issue of zebra crossings. Even when they exist, many Ghanaian drivers disregard them, making it dangerous for pedestrians who often have to sprint across roads to avoid being hit. Public education and stricter enforcement of zebra crossing regulations are desperately needed to save lives.

The NDC government under His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has inherited a road safety nightmare. Broken-down traffic lights, poor road signage, and an overall neglect of safety infrastructure have turned our roads into avenues of danger. But this is not about pointing fingers; it is about coming together to find lasting solutions that protect every Ghanaian life.

Government must urgently launch a comprehensive campaign to clear billboards from the middle of our roads, repair broken-down traffic lights, and introduce better enforcement of road safety regulations.

The Road Safety Authority must be empowered and resourced to fulfil its mandate effectively. Furthermore, authorities should make the purchase of brand-new vehicles more attractive through tax incentives and affordable financing options. Ghana must rise above its reliance on accident-ridden cars imported from Europe and the Americas. Our citizens deserve the dignity of safety.

His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, as a visionary leader dedicated to resetting Ghana and positioning it to attract investors and tourists, must make road safety a top priority. The NDC has always stood with the masses, championing strategic interventions to improve the quality of life for all.

Now is the time for the government to rid our nation of the death traps that lurk on our streets and introduce safer, greener transportation solutions.

Building a prosperous and thriving nation requires a firm commitment to safeguarding the lives of our citizens. Prioritizing road safety is an essential part of this vision.

The memories of those we have lost must drive us to act decisively and immediately. This is not just a plea for change; it is a call to action. Ghana’s future depends on the safety of its people. Let’s make our roads safe again.

Residents of Biakoye appeal to Mahama to appoint Dr. Richard Bisimpo as DCE

0

Some concerned residents of the Biakoye District in the Oti Region have made a heartfelt appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to appoint Dr. Richard Bisimpo as the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Biakoye.

Dr. Richard Bisimpo, a retired Fire Service Commander, is among the three individuals shortlisted for the DCE position. He is widely recognized within the district for his dedication, hard work, tireless service, and selfless commitment to the development of Biakoye.

The residents, who have thrown their support behind Dr. Bisimpo, strongly believe he is the ideal candidate to lead the district and steer its progress.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Ahiable Mawuli, a resident of Tapa Abotoase, praised Dr. Bisimpo’s contributions over the years.

“He has consistently mobilized resources and support for the district’s development. The man genuinely has Biakoye at heart, and it is clear to us that such a dedicated person is exactly who we need as DCE,” he stated.

Another resident, Mahmoud Isah, highlighted Dr. Bisimpo’s numerous sacrifices and initiatives aimed at improving the district.

“Dr. Bisimpo has built an ultramodern computer laboratory for students in Kwamekrom and provided his three-bedroom, self-contained house to accommodate the headmaster of the Kwamekrom Community Day Senior High School.

He has also supported students with school supplies during exams. Additionally, he has facilitated the construction of boreholes in several communities and donated motorbikes, computers, and other essential items to strengthen the party’s operations,” Isah noted.

“The man is genuine and capable of transforming Biakoye better than any other candidate,” he added.

A party loyalist, Abdullai Mawusi, also commended Dr. Bisimpo’s unwavering commitment and made a passionate plea to John Mahama.

“We humbly appeal to President Mahama to appoint Dr. Bisimpo to help reset and develop Biakoye,” she appealed.

Meanwhile, investigations conducted by the GNA revealed that a significant number of individuals within the Biakoye District had expressed strong support for Dr. Richard Bisimpo, favoring him over other aspirants.

The residents are therefore urging President John Dramani Mahama to recognize Dr. Bisimpo’s remarkable contributions and grant him the opportunity to serve as the DCE, believing his leadership will usher in positive transformation for Biakoye.

No one is a star but Jesus – Francis Amo warns against ‘Luciferian’ pride

Gospel musician Francis Amo has emphasized the importance of humility and the dangers of self-righteousness

Speaking to Prince Benjamin (PB) on Accra 100.5 FM’s Entertainment Capital, Francis Amo shared his conviction “no one is a star except Jesus Christ in whom we believe.

“We read in scripture that he had a star which led people to his home. Meanwhile, you and I were born where it is mostly starless.”

Amo cautioned creatives, especially in Gospel, to “be careful” with the hubris that comes with considering themselves as stars, which could lead them to belittle others while overestimating their own importance.

“If you want to be powerful, and attract all kinds of people, making them feel at home and respected, around you, you need to relax and come down. Remember your humble beginnings,” he admonished, highlighting consumers of art were invaluable kingmakers, who had to be respected.

He underlined stardom needed a huge amount of “caution,” without which “a lot of so called stars have fallen off, some are suffering in isolation.

“But God, by his grace, has also opened this page for some us and we must learn from the predecessors, noting that when you talk and interact with people, you must mind your language and attitude.”

In Christian belief, Lucifer, once a beautiful morning star, was cast down into darkness once he entertained an ambition to rival and supplant God.

Francis Amo has explained why he is open to interacting with secular musicians, and speaking and dressing in ways deemed unconventional for a Gospel singer.

“The Bible says there’s time for everything, including unique times for laughter, crying, and grieving. So when it is befitting for you to laugh with people, you must do just that,” the praise leader famous for his energetic dancing and comic personality said.

Francis Amo’s latest project, Ahummoboro (Mercy), celebrates Gospel and Highlife music. Spanning an hour, the tape packs seven songs, with a Peter King being the sole collaborator.

Private schools to receive over 150,000 students – GNACOPS reveals

The government is set to send over 150,000 students to private senior high schools as part of the free Senior High School policy.

As part of the initiative, students will be assigned to both day and boarding schools among the over 168 currently in operation.

The National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) revealed this in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.

Executive Director Obenfo Nana Kwesi Gyetua disclosed that the government has engaged with that and put before its plan to incorporate private schools into the free SHS policy.

He said that a committee is currently working on this, and the government is expected to allocate the numbers for existing schools.

He assured the government and the Ghanaian people that they are fully prepared, with adequate infrastructure and experienced staff.

Obenfo Nana Kwesi Gyetua stated that public schools face congestion and other challenges, and that the decision to include private schools in the policy was a step in the right direction.

“I can confidently confirm that the new government has taken steps to incorporate private schools into the free SHS policy. The government informed us that we will be allocated 150,000 students for private schools. There are congestion issues in our various public schools, and private schools are prepared to assist the government in addressing these challenges.”

In terms of arrangement, he said, “Before you can receive students, you should operate as a private school. The government has informed us of the amount that will be allocated for either a day or a boarder. So as I am speaking with you, there is a committee working on this and has been tasked to submit their report, and we are optimistic that maybe in a week, the committee will have submitted their report. But the most important point to state is that our children will be attending private schools under the free SHS policy. We are excited about this news and prepared to support the government in improving the policy.”

Safe-haven gold clears $3,000 for the first time

0

Gold pierced through the psychological milestone of $3,000 an ounce on Friday for the first time, building on an historic rally as trade tensions and U.S. rate cut bets supercharge its appeal as a safe haven asset.

Spot gold was up 0.4% at $3,000.87 an ounce at 1015 GMT.

U.S. gold futures were up 0.7% to $3,013.60.

Bullion has scaled 13 all-time highs so far this year and is on track for a second straight week of gains.

“The precious metal still has an abundance of reasons to pursue higher prices, including geopolitical and economic concerns, along with the prospects of Fed rate cuts,” said Han Tan, Exinity Group’s chief market analyst.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs have played a significant role in raising gold’s demand. The global trade war that has roiled financial markets and raised recession fears is escalating, with Trump on Thursday threatening to slap a 200% tariff on alcohol imports from Europe.

SPDR Gold Trust , the world’s largest gold-backed ETF, said its holdings were at 905.81 metric tons after reaching its highest level since August 2023 in late February.

Meanwhile, data on Wednesday showed U.S. consumer prices cooling more than analysts’ expected, potentially creating more room for Federal Reserve rate cuts. The Fed’s next meeting is on Wednesday, where it is widely expected to keep its benchmark overnight interest rate unchanged.

“Next week’s FOMC decision, along with Chair (Jerome) Powell’s signals, are set to dictate whether spot gold remains above or below $3k,” said Tan.

Traders expect policymakers will resume cutting borrowing costs in June.

“We maintain our bullish stance on gold, with prices expected to reach a record high of $3,050 per ounce in 2025,” analysts at ANZ noted.

Spot silver added 0.4% to $33.94 an ounce, platinum lost 0.5% to $989.04 and palladium gained 0.3% to $960.71.

Agbana slams opposition for misleading statistics

Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana

Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana, has defended the government’s decision to run a lean administration, insisting that efficiency, rather than excess, is the best way forward.

Speaking on the matter on Metro TV, Agbana took a swipe at the opposition, accusing them of distorting figures to mislead the public. “There’s a book I recommend to every politician: How to Lie with Statistics,” he said. “It seems some NPP MPs have mastered the act of misleading people with numbers.”

He argued that, despite operating with fewer ministers and a more streamlined government, the administration has already started seeing positive results.

“What we have achieved in just two months with these numbers shows that we are on the right path. We are running a lean and efficient government, and there is no debate about that.”

Agbana further assured Ghanaians that fiscal discipline remains a top priority under the current administration.

He accused the previous government of mismanaging state funds, stating, “Under the NPP, public funds were abused. They promised to protect the public purse, but not only did they empty it—they took the whole purse along.”

According to him, the government is determined to reverse this trend by ensuring prudent financial management.

“This government is focused on stopping the bleeding, ensuring that whatever enters the national kitty is managed properly,” he stated.

Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to good governance, Agbana stressed that their approach is not about slogans but real progress.

“We are focused on delivering real development for Ghanaians, not just catchy slogans. Our lean government is proof that efficiency, not excess, is the way forward.”

If everyone is happy, did he serve them well? – Ayikoi Otoo on Dampare’s removal

Former IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare Former IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare

Leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ayikoi Otoo, has defended the removal of Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare, suggesting that the overwhelming reaction from officers within the police service was proof that his leadership was not well received internally.

“I don’t regret anything… But if the whole group, everybody is happy that you have been removed, do you think you served them well?” he questioned.

Speaking in an interview on Morning Starr on Starr FM, Otoo argued that while Dampare’s leadership may have been seen in a positive light by the public, the sentiment within the service was quite different.

“There was talk about him improving the image of the police, but those are optics. As to whether that improved service conditions and the welfare of officers is another matter altogether,” he stated.

Otoo maintained that the excitement surrounding Dampare’s removal was a clear indication that officers were dissatisfied with his tenure.

Amin Adam rejects Mahama’s claims of economic mismanagement

0

Former Minister of Finance, Dr. Amin Adam Former Minister of Finance, Dr. Amin Adam

Former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has refuted President John Dramani Mahama’s assertion that the previous administration criminally mismanaged Ghana’s economy.

Addressing the matter on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV, Dr. Amin Adam dismissed the allegations, insisting that the economy was in a strong position before it was handed over.

“The new government, right from the beginning, tried to paint a certain picture of the economy they inherited. I think that they just wanted to give excuses by saying that the economy was bad, it was criminally mismanaged, the economy was in crisis,” he stated.

He argued that such claims were a deliberate attempt to justify the new administration’s decisions, including potentially unpopular policies.

“So that the goodwill that they have, they can be able to push certain policies no matter how bitter those policies are. And people will understand because they inherited a bad situation, so let’s bear with them. So that was the narrative they created,” he added.

Dr. Amin Adam insisted that the evidence contradicts these claims. “Everything shows that the economy we handed over to them was a strong economy,” he maintained, pushing back against assertions that the previous government left the country in crisis.

Man United fans ‘disappointed’ by season ticket price increase

0

Manchester United fans staged a protest before their game with Arsenal on 9 March

Manchester United season ticket prices will increase by about 5% for the third successive year as the club aims to become financially sustainable.

The Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) says the increase is “less than many feared”, and there has been a price freeze for under-16s.

But MUST says United fans have “expressed their disappointment” that the club has “ignored” the call for a widespread price freeze.

Since becoming the club’s co-owner last year, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his Ineos group have tried improve the club’s finances but several changes have been unpopular, resulting in fan protests, in particular at last week’s home game with Arsenal.

Some of the latest changes for the 2025-26 season include the introduction of a game categorisation model for non-season ticket holders, where premium games cost more.

United are also increasing the minimum usage requirement for season ticket holders from 15 to 16 of their 19 Premier League home games.

United’s chief executive Omar Berrada says the club “worked hard to come up with a pricing package that is fair and reasonable” and that the new changes are being made “to offset continued rises in operating costs”.

However, MUST says that “we fail to see any justification for the increase” and that the new categorisation model is “a source of major concern”.

A MUST statement read: “For several months we have argued long and hard that the club need to look at the big picture and freeze ticket prices for next season.

“Other clubs have done that already and at United it would have sent a powerful message about the need for everyone to pull together to get the club out of the very difficult position it finds itself in.”

Berrada said: “We understand that any price rise is unwelcome, especially during a period of underperformance on the pitch, and we listened carefully to the strong arguments put forward by the FAB (Fan Advisory Board) in favour of a freeze.

“However, the club has decided it would not be right to keep prices unchanged while costs rise and the club continues to face financial issues.

“We have kept the increase to the lowest possible level and protected our youngest season ticket holders from any rises while ensuring the club remains financially strong enough to invest in improving the team.”

Cost-cutting measures continue under Ineos

After freezing season ticket prices for 11 years, United are now increasing them for a third straight year.

This comes after a second round of redundancies at the club was announced last month, and there was a mid-season rise in some ticket prices to £66, with no concessions. Other cost-cutting measures include the removal of free lunches for staff.

Ratcliffe has said the decisions are necessary in order to slash losses, which last year exceeded £113m, and last week he told the BBC Sport “the club runs out of money at Christmas if we don’t do those things”.

The latest season ticket changes represent an average increase of £2.50 per game.

Ratcliffe told the BBC: “Well, I don’t get involved in the detail of ticket pricing. That’s for the management of the club, not for me really.

“My sort of general principles on ticket pricing are that it should be fair, and affordable for the people in Manchester.

“We do need to look after the under-16s and the older people who do not have as much money, but at the same time ticket income is part of the overall income of the club.

“The club receives income from ticketing, from merchandising and from TV. They are all major components of how much money we have to spend on new players and the squad.”

What other changes will Man Utd make?

Manchester United fans protest against the club's owners
The Glazers still own about 70% of Manchester United

The introduction of a game categorisation model, plus the increase in season ticket prices and the minimum usage requirement are just some of the latest changes:

  • United’s ‘senior’ discount will now track the state pension age of 66, giving older fans 25% off. Some had previously received a 50% discount.
  • Fans behind the dugouts will be relocated, allowing the club to convert those seats for hospitality and sell them at premium prices
  • Fans who sell their ticket back to the club less than 14 days before a game will be charged £10
  • Car parking charges will rise by 15%

Netflix drama Adolescence hailed as ‘flawless’ TV

0

Viewers and critics have heaped praise on Netflix’s hard-hitting drama Adolescence, with many hailing it as a landmark TV show.

The four-part British series was released last week and is the most-watched show on the platform around the world over the weekend.

The Times’ Tom Peck described it as “complete perfection”, a view echoed by the Guardian’s Lucy Mangan, who said it was “the closest thing to TV perfection in decades”.

Fans on social media ranged from US director Paul Feig, who called the first episode “one of the best hours of television I’ve ever seen”, to Jeremy Clarkson, who called it “masterful”.

Netflix Owen Cooper and Stephen Graham in Adolescence
Stephen Graham co-created Adolescence and stars as dad Eddie

Adolescence shows the aftermath of the stabbing of a teenage girl, with a 13-year-old boy from her school arrested for her murder.

Jamie, the young suspect, is played by newcomer Owen Cooper, with Stephen Graham as his dad.

Its story shines a light on the corrosive impact of social media and misogynist influencers on some teenage boys.

Graham said he was inspired to make the show after seeing two separate reports of boys stabbing girls to death.

“I just thought, what’s going on in society where this kind of thing is becoming a regular occurrence?” he told BBC’s The One Show.

“I just couldn’t fathom it. So I wanted to really have a look and try and shine a light on this particular thing.”

Male rage

Writer Jack Thorne said they wanted to “look in the eye of male rage”.

The central character had been “indoctrinated by voices” like Andrew Tate’s and “voices a lot more dangerous than Andrew Tate’s”, Thorne told Radio 4’s Front Row.

Erin Doherty, who plays a child psychologist, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “This show has the bravery to just peel back the layers and go, let’s talk about this thing because we’re still dealing with it today. There are still issues cropping up in the news today.

“So all we can hold ourselves accountable for is having the discussion, and hopefully that’s what it does. It just allows parents, aunties, uncles, even just friends, to engage in the conversation.”

Netflix Erin Doherty and Owen Cooper in Adolescence
The third episode, featuring Erin Doherty as a psychologist, was singled out by some viewers

Each episode was filmed in a single, uninterrupted take.

In the Guardian, Mangan said its technical accomplishments “are matched by an array of award-worthy performances and a script that manages to be intensely naturalistic and hugely evocative at the same time”.

She added: “Adolescence is a deeply moving, deeply harrowing experience.”

Peck’s review in the Times began: “Wow. Just wow. I’m tempted to type out the word ‘wow’ a further 700 times or so, followed by, ‘Don’t miss Adolescence on Netflix,’ and then be done with it.”

The Telegraph’s TV critic Anita Singh said it was “a devastating watch”, adding: “It is a drama so quietly devastating that I won’t forget it for a very long time.”

Singh said the single-shot technique “can feel like a gimmick” but that the acting is “phenomenal”.

Graham is “the best actor working today”, but “the truly remarkable performance” is by Cooper, she wrote.

“He moves between vulnerability, anger, bravado and fear. What he does here is astonishing.”

Fantastic performances

Elsewhere, Deadline’s Jake Kanter wrote: “Adolescence is as flawless a four hours of TV drama I have ever seen. It lingers in the mind long after the credits have rolled. Astonishing telly.”

Rolling Stone’s Alan Sepinwall said it was “among the very best things – and an early contender for the best thing – you will see on the small screen this year”.

The New York Times’ Margaret Lyons called it “a rich work of social critique”, describing the standout episode, the third, as “one of the more fascinating hours of TV I’ve seen in a long time”.

On BBC Radio 5 Live’s Must Watch, Hayley Campbell said the drama doesn’t attempt to solve the problems it raises.

“It’s bringing it up, it’s looking at it. It’s about the rise of misogyny, especially in young boys, brought about by people like Andrew Tate, who’s namechecked in this, but only once. It’s not about him.

“The drama is more about the horror of how little control you have over your kid and what they’re doing on their phone.”

Fellow critic Scott Bryan added: “The performances are absolutely fantastic. I would say this is flawless. The person, though, I think who deserves the most recognition is 15-year-old Owen Cooper.”

Scrapping of nuisance taxes poses risk to government’s revenue target – Deloitte

0

The scrapping of certain nuisance taxes in the 2025 Budget presents a notable risk to the government’s ability to achieve its revenue target, Deloitte Ghana has disclosed in its analysis of the budget.

According to the professional services firm, this is due to the revenue losses that will result from scrapping of these tax handles.

The Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced the scrapping of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy), the Betting Tax and the Emissions Levy in the 2025 Budget.

However, Deloitte recommended extensive stakeholder engagement with businesses that will be impacted by these measures.

It however commended the revenue-enhancing measures proposed to cover the potential shortfalls from the taxes to be scrapped. This is to ensure the government obtains their buy-in and commitment ahead of implementation.

For instance, the professional services firm said analysts have begun to hint that the upward review of the Growth and Sustainability levy for mining companies, if not properly managed, can constrict growth in the sector.

The government in the 2025 Budget plans to reintroduce road tolls with a tech-driven toll administration system will drive collection efficiency.

Deloitte said whilst the proposal to introduce technology to improve efficiency is commendable, it recommends the reintroduction of the road tolls to be guided by a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis of the same to ensure the revenue to be generated from the tolls will be worth the time and resources to be invested in administering same.

Government Must Prioritise Urgent Tax Expansion

Again, beyond the new measures proposed, it recommended for the government to also prioritise the urgent need to expand the tax net to cover the informal sector as the sector holds significant untapped revenue potential.

“In this regard, we believe the use of technology, tax education, and awareness creation and reforms to simplify compliance will be key for achieving this objective”, it added.

NADMO must provide relief items that meet victims’ needs – Oppong Asamoah

0

Chairman of the Works and Housing Committee in Parliament, Vincent Oppong Asamoah has emphasized the importance of ensuring that relief items provided to victims during natural disasters are tailored to their actual needs.

His statement comes after officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Nanumba South District of the Northern Region were prevented from conducting an assessment in Lugni, where a severe rainstorm on the evening of Sunday, March 16, left many homes extensively damaged.

According to residents, NADMO has never provided them with support during past disasters despite consistently visiting the community to take pictures and videos for their assessments. Frustrated by the lack of assistance, they blocked officials from carrying out their work.

In an exclusive interview on Channel One Newsroom on Monday, March 17, Oppong Asamoah opined that it is not enough to simply distribute a few items and claim to have provided relief.

Instead, he stressed that the items provided must be relevant and useful to those affected.

According to the Dormaa West lawmaker, this approach is crucial in helping victims recover from disasters and rebuild their lives.

“They [NADMO] have the capacity but the problem is that we don’t resource them. In terms of the technical ability they have, we need to resource them and we need to ensure that not giving them money alone, that when monies are given to them, what is supplied is what the people really need.

“It is not like, just go out there, take some few items, cartons, containers and then go and give to them that you have provided relief items. Meanwhile, we need to help them at least with some level of restitution to get them back to where they were before the disaster came,” he said.

The winner of Ghana’s Most Beautiful 2024, Queen Nihad Titiaka Oases Ibrahim, recently made a significant move towards climate action by visiting Hon. Seidu Issifu, the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability.

This courtesy call took place at the Office of the President – Annex, with a primary focus on fostering government support and collaboration to tackle climate change through localized solutions.

As the founder of EcoGreen Oases Legacy, Queen Titiaka is a staunch advocate for sustainable development, environmental conservation, and gender empowerment. During the meeting, she presented her flagship initiative, “Empowering Communities for Climate Action,” which champions community-driven strategies for climate adaptation and resilience through initiatives such as waste management, recycling, tree planting, and promoting clean cooking solutions.

In their discussion, the former Face of UPSA and UPSA SRC Women’s Commissioner stressed the urgent need to localize climate solutions for greater effectiveness and sustainability. She emphasized the importance of community-based interventions, public education, and policy-backed initiatives in driving meaningful impacts to combat environmental degradation.

Minister Seidu Issifu welcomed Queen Titiaka warmly, congratulating her on her achievements and commending her commendable commitment to environmental sustainability. He acknowledged the essential role that young leaders like her play in shaping Ghana’s climate policies and solutions. The Minister expressed eagerness to explore collaboration opportunities with EcoGreen Oases Legacy and other youth-led organizations focused on climate action.

Furthermore, he encouraged Queen Titiaka to take her initiatives to the grassroots level, emphasizing the importance of making climate advocacy accessible to all communities. The Minister committed to supporting her in ways that could further her efforts, reinforcing the government’s strong stance on youth involvement in climate initiatives.

This engagement signifies a vital step toward bridging the gap between grassroots activism and governmental policy in Ghana’s fight against climate change. With the support of the Ministry, EcoGreen Oases Legacy aims to scale up its projects, collaborating with local communities, policymakers, and development partners to advance Ghana’s climate resilience agenda.

Queen Nihad Titiaka Oases Ibrahim reiterated her dedication to community empowerment, stating, “Winning this crown is not just a personal achievement; it’s about using this platform to ignite real change. Effective climate action must be localized and inclusive, ensuring that every community, especially the vulnerable, benefits from sustainable solutions.”

This meeting marks the beginning of what is anticipated to be a fruitful collaboration between EcoGreen Oases Legacy and the Ghanaian government, focused on advancing policies and grassroots initiatives that promote environmental sustainability and resilience amid the ongoing climate crisis.

Youth Corper wey call Tinubu ‘terrible president’ break any law?

Di question on weda corps members fit come out to tok dia mind on di situation of di kontri or not na im dominate tok-tok for Nigeria social media space ova di weekend.

Di mata turn hot debate afta one corps member wey dey serve for Lagos state, Nigeria biggest commercial city, for one video wey don go viral now, lament di high cost of living for di kontri, plus di economic challenge di kontri dey face.

Di corper also for di video condemn President Bola Tinubu administration, as she call di presido “terrible leader”.

She also add say Lagos na “smelling state”, wey don generate plenty gbasgbos on social media.

Dis her tok don provoke plenty reactions for di kontri as some Nigerians dey of di position say she no get right as corper to openly kick against di goment according to di National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) handbook. Odas dey of di opinion say she get di right to express her grievance as she be Nigerian and she get di right to exercise di freedom of speech as e dey for di Nigeria constitution.

Some pipo also argue say she be employee of di Nigerian goment, therefore, she no get right to chook mouth for wetin dey happun for di kontri. Odas argue say NYSC na para-military, and so, na no go area.

Although di National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) neva comment on di mata, di corper allege say some NYSC officials don call to threaten her sake of wetin she tok.

Wetin di corper tok wey lead to gbasgbos for di kontri

For di video post wey don go viral for social media now, di corps member lament di economic condition of di kontri.

She say prices of food dey go up every week and question wetin goment dey do to reduce di high cost of living. She describe President Tinubu as a “terrible president” sake of di worsening economic palava.

“I just wan tok say our president, I no know if any oda president dey wey terrible pass you. But you be terrible president.”

Afta dat video go viral, di corper post anoda video on her TikTok account wia she allege say one NYSC official call and threaten her to delete di video. But she insist say na di truth about di kontri situation she tok.

Di corper post say, “Dear Nigerians, NYSC board don dey threaten me say make I stop to dey tok on dis issue. In less dan 24 hours, goment don already dey threaten me, starting wit di NYSC board!

“Why I no fit speak up? Becos I be NYSC corper no mean say I no get right to complain.

“Why goment no wan listen to di criticisms of dia citizens? Dem believe say dem get chain on me, wey be NYSC, and dem dey use am to hold me. #officialasiwajubat I no do anything wrong. I criticise your goment, and I demand say make dem hear us.”

Wetin NYSC law and di Nigerian constitution tok about di mata?

No specific section for di NYSC Bye-Laws outrightly ban corps members from calling out di goment. However, one clause dey, wey indirectly regulate how corps members fit express themselves publicly.

According to Section 3 (i) of di NYSC Bye-Laws Code of Conduct (2011),

“Any member wey address di press on any policy issue without di written consent of di State Coordinator go dey tried by di Camp Court and, if found guilty, e go dey liable to extension of service for thirty (30) days on half pay.”

Dis one mean say if any corps member wan make public statement, especially di one wey go criticise goment policies, technically, dem suppose get clearance from NYSC officials first.

Dis na one of di unclear rules wey NYSC officials dey often use to silence corps members wen dem speak out.

However, wetin di bye law possibly dey refer to na official press engagements, wia di corper go follow tori pipo tok, no be di one dem go post on dia personal social media account.

One Human Rights Lawyer, Inibehe Effiong wey chook mouth for dis mata clear am say no provision dey for di NYSC Act wey subject corps members to civil service Rules. “Criticizing di President or di goment no be offence under di NYSC Act (See Section 13). E also no be offence under di NYSC Bye Laws (Section 4 of di Revised Bye Laws, 2011).

Oga Effiong say im don watch all di videos of di lady wey pipo dey debate on top and im no see anytin slightly partisan for her comments.

E say she only express her justified frustrations wit di situation for di kontri, particularly di impact of di inflation on her and oda Nigerians, wey dey within her constitutional right to freedom of expression as guaranteed by Section 39 of di Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

Di lawyer also clear am say corps members no be civil servants or public servants. Section 2 of di NYSC Act tok say every eligible Nigerian go dey called-up to serve for a continuous period of one-year national service. Na National Service, no be federal or civil service. Di NYSC na agency of di Federal Government, but corps members no be employees of di federal government or staff of di NYSC.

Also, di Certificate wey corps members dey get afta dem complete dia National Service as prescribed in Section 11 of di NYSC Act na Certificate of National Service, no be certificate of employment. Federal or state goments no dey issue employment letters give corps members.

Amnesty international, odas react

Amnesty International, one ogbonge human rights group for one post on X, tok say di corp member dey perfectly within her right to express her discontent peacefully.

Di rights groups say make authorities prioritize addressing di kontri economic woes instead of her life wey dem dey threaten.

“Make di Nigerian authorities stop to dey respond wit violence and threats to individuals and groups wey express dissenting opinions — in utter disregard for Nigerian constitution and international law. Holding and voicing different views no be crime.”

President of di Trade Union Congress (TUC) Festus Osifo, for im reaction tok say di corp member bin tok out of frustration and advise di goment say make dem no go afta her but dey “tolerant of critics.”

Oga Osifo wey react on di trending mata on one television programme say goment need to understand say pipo dey para.

“Di goment need to understand say pipo dey frustrated, pipo dey hungry, pipo don tire. So, if dem decide to para, I strongly believe say goment no suppose personalise am and come afta such individuals.

Imagine a young lady wey dey carry out her NYSC function, wetin she really fit do to bring down di goment? Na her personal frustration she air.”

One former Nigeria Vice President Atiku Abubakar post say, “I deeply admire her boldness and wisdom—her fearless resolve to speak truth to power, undeterred by di weight of opposition.”

E say instead of di hostility wey she don receive, she deserve encouragement and support.

E also be like say human rights activist and presidential candidate for di 2023 general election, Omoyele Sowore, dey rally support for Ms Uguamaye, as e post on X say im go follow her go her NYSC Local Government Inspector office alongside a team of lawyers in case.

Sowore tok say wen dem reach di LGI, no official turn up throughout dia stay.

COVID-19 loans were necessary, not reckless – Amin Adam

0

Former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has defended the Akufo-Addo administration’s borrowing practices, arguing that loans secured during the COVID-19 pandemic were essential and should not be deemed reckless.

In an interview on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV on Monday, March 17, Dr. Amin Adam questioned criticisms of the government’s debt strategy.

“I don’t know how anybody would describe the borrowing to address the COVID-19 pandemic as reckless borrowing. I don’t know if anybody is right to call that reckless borrowing,” he stated.

He emphasized that responsible debt management involves strategic borrowing and sustainability.

“It takes a government that understands debt dynamics to be able to borrow and negotiate a reduction in debt. And so, if we borrowed from an unsustainable level, the question should be, by the time we left, were the debt levels sustainable or not?” he added.

Dr. Amin Adam also pointed out that every administration inherits and services debts from its predecessor, noting that the Akufo-Addo government paid off obligations left by the Mahama administration in 2016.

He further argued that if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had won the 2024 elections, they would have continued managing Ghana’s debt as part of their fiscal responsibility.

“I don’t see why he [finance minister] would be running away from the issues they asked Ghanaians to vote for them to come address,” he remarked.

President John Dramani Mahama, has announced the appointment of new Acting Service Chiefs for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The changes, which take effect on March 24, 2025, are pending consultation with the Council of State.

The newly appointed Acting Service Chiefs include Brigadier General William Agyapong as Acting Chief of the Defence Staff, Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu as Acting Chief of Army Staff, Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing as Acting Chief of Naval Staff, Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong as Acting Chief of Air Staff, and Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan as Acting Chief of Staff.

The announcement follows a meeting between President Mahama and the outgoing Service Chiefs, led by Chief of the Defence Staff General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, at the Flagstaff House earlier today.

During the meeting, the President expressed his gratitude to the outgoing leaders for their dedicated service to the nation.

President Mahama commended the outgoing Service Chiefs for their commitment and professionalism, which have significantly contributed to the stability and security of Ghana.

He assured them of his continued reliance on their wealth of experience and expertise as the nation moves forward.

The President emphasised the importance of the new appointments in strengthening the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces and ensuring the continued protection of the nation’s sovereignty.

He expressed confidence in the ability of the newly appointed Acting Service Chiefs to uphold the values of the GAF and lead with integrity and excellence.

The new leadership is expected to build on the achievements of their predecessors and further enhance the operational efficiency of the Armed Forces.

The outgoing Service Chiefs, who have served with distinction, were praised for their roles in maintaining peace and security during their tenure.

Akufo-Addo govt did not mismanage economy

0

Former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has rejected claims by President John Dramani Mahama that the Akufo-Addo administration criminally mismanaged the economy.

Speaking on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV on Monday, March 17, Dr. Amin Adam argued that the fundamentals of the economy were strong when the previous government left office.

He accused the new administration of deliberately portraying a negative image of the economy to justify its policy decisions.

“The new government, right from the beginning, tried to paint a certain picture of the economy they inherited. I think that they just wanted to give excuses by saying that the economy was bad, it was criminally mismanaged, the economy was in crisis,” he stated.

He further asserted that this narrative was crafted to gain public support for tough policy measures.

“So that the goodwill that they have, they can be able to push certain policies no matter how bitter those policies are. And people will understand because they inherited a bad situation, so let’s bear with them. So that was the narrative they created. Everything shows that the economy we handed over to them was a strong economy,” he emphasized.

24-Hour economy policy is deceptive without funding – Amin Adam

0

Former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has expressed skepticism about the practicality of the Mahama government’s proposed 24-hour economy policy, arguing that the 2025 Budget fails to provide a concrete plan for its execution.

The policy, designed to create jobs and enhance productivity across all sectors, was a central campaign promise. However, Dr. Amin Adam contends that despite references to the initiative in the budget, there is no detailed strategy or funding allocation to support its implementation.

“You take the budget and look at it, there were only references to the 24-hour economy. There’s no programme on the implementation of the 24-hour economy. And once there’s no programme on the implementation, it would mean that there’s no allocation of funds towards the implementation,” he stated during an interview on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV on Monday, March 17.

He further questioned Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson’s assurance that the initiative would be launched later in 2025, insisting that without budgetary support, the plan remains unrealistic.

“The finance minister said they would launch it later this year, but even if you launch it and there’s no allocation, how do you even implement that? Are you going to launch and wait till 2026, when you have to make allocation to really implement the 24-hour economy? So, this is deceptive as far as job creation is concerned,” he argued.

Dr. Amin Adam’s remarks add to ongoing debates over the viability of the 24-hour economy policy and its potential impact on Ghana’s economic growth.

I didn’t lie about my talent

0

After years of making music, Cina Soul has finally released her debut album, a project she describes as her biggest achievement yet.

“I’ve always wanted to drop an album, but I felt I wasn’t ready. It’s a full body of work, and I needed time to create it,” she told KMJ on Joy Prime monitored by MyNewsGh.

She admitted that the process was exhausting. “I don’t know how people create albums every year. It took me almost two and a half years to make this one.

“Recording so many songs and shortlisting them to 10 or 12 was tough. Everyone had opinions—my team, marketing experts—but I had to follow my heart.”

Cina Soul also revealed the challenges of collaborating with songwriters. “I’ve always written my own songs, but this time, I allowed myself to work with songwriters. It was uncomfortable at first, but even the greatest artists have songwriters. It doesn’t make me any less of an artist.”

When asked about the album’s title, she explained, “I called it ‘Did I Lie?’ because I didn’t lie about my talent, my songwriting, my vocal ability, or my versatility. This album proves all of that.”

She remains optimistic about the album’s success. “The reception has been great so far, but the pressure is real. With a single, you have one marketing plan, but with an album, you have to push every song while balancing the lead single. We haven’t slept in weeks!”

Dampare’s removal was justified – Ayikoi Otoo

0

Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Ayikoi Otoo Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Ayikoi Otoo

Leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ayikoi Otoo, has defended the recent removal of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare, arguing that the widespread excitement that followed was a clear indication of dissatisfaction within the police service.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, he questioned whether an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the IGP’s dismissal was a sign that he had effectively served the force.

“I don’t regret anything… But if the whole group, everybody is happy that you have been removed, do you think you served them well?” he asked.

According to Otoo, the former IGP’s tenure may have been viewed favourably by the public, but within the police force, officers were eager to see him leave.

While some credited the ex-IGP with restoring discipline and improving the image of the Ghana Police Service, Otoo dismissed these achievements as “optics.” He argued that true leadership should focus on the well-being and morale of officers, rather than just public perception.

“There was talk about him improving the image of the police, but those are optics. As to whether that improved service conditions and the welfare of officers is another matter altogether,” he noted.

Otoo further suggested that the government had long considered removing the IGP, pointing to the appointment of a Deputy IGP as a clear signal that leadership change was imminent.

He criticized how the responsibilities of the deputy were structured, arguing that a second-in-command should have had full authority to assist the IGP instead of being restricted to certain roles.

“When the deputy IGP was appointed, it was a signal that somebody was being prepared to take over… People wanted him removed, and our government was expected to act,” he stated.

On the appointment of the new IGP, Ayikoi Otoo expressed confidence in his qualifications, highlighting his years of experience in different leadership roles within the police service. However, he emphasized that true leadership is not about imposing authority but about listening to subordinates and fostering cooperation.

“Leadership is not about the leader, it’s about those being led. One man cannot claim to have all the wisdom in this world,” he stated, suggesting that the former IGP’s downfall was his unwillingness to engage with his officers effectively.

2025 Budget offers hope and discipline

Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana

Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana, has applauded the Finance Minister for presenting what he describes as an “excellent budget” that prioritizes fiscal discipline and economic recovery.

Speaking in an interview, Agbana stated, “I think it’s right for me to use this platform to congratulate the Finance minister for delivering a budget that gives hope, addresses fundamental economic issues, and emphasizes fiscal discipline.”

He criticized the previous administration, asserting that their budgets focused more on catchy names than on real economic solutions.

“For the past eight years, we saw how the government under Nana Akufo-Addo and his appointees never prioritized the needs of Ghanaians in their budgets.

“They were good at coming up with nice, beautiful names—ASA Budget, Whatever Budget, Blah Blah Blah Budget—but all of that led us into a deep hole that we are trying to climb out of,” he said on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana.

Agbana further highlighted how mismanagement under the former administration created economic hardships, leading even members of the then-majority to demand the removal of their Finance Minister.

“Even they couldn’t take it any longer—98 NPP MPs signed a petition asking for the Finance minister to be removed.”

He dismissed criticisms from the opposition, stating that they failed to implement their supposed economic solutions during their tenure.

“It is surprising that all of a sudden, the NPP claims to have the men to run the economy. Where were these ideas in their eight years?”

According to Agbana, the current administration has started on a positive note and is committed to reversing the economic downturn. “We are on the right trajectory, and we will stay focused on delivering the real solutions Ghanaians need,” he affirmed.

Eddie Nketiah embraces role model status and Crystal Palace challenge

0

Crystal Palace forward Eddie Nketiah Crystal Palace forward Eddie Nketiah

Crystal Palace forward Eddie Nketiah cherishes the privilege of being a role model, recognizing the impact he can have on aspiring young footballers.

The 25-year-old striker, who began his football journey at Chelsea before making his name at Arsenal, has steadily built his career with determination and resilience. After breaking into Arsenal’s first team in 2017 and experiencing a loan spell at Leeds United during their Championship-winning campaign, Nketiah now seeks a fresh challenge at Palace.

Born in Lewisham to Ghanaian parents, he first showcased his talent playing for south-east London’s Hillyfielders before Chelsea scouted him at nine. Though released by the Blues in 2015, his path led him to Arsenal, where he developed into a clinical forward.

In NBC Sports’ By Way of Africa series, Nketiah spoke about embracing his heritage and the significance of representation on a global stage.

“It’s an amazing opportunity. We’re blessed to be able to do what we do and to be role models for people to look up to, see what we’re doing, and follow in our footsteps. I just want to work as hard as I can to hopefully create my own legacy that people can look back on and be proud of — people who have a similar upbringing as me or come from the same environment, who believe it may not be possible,” he said.

“I want them to see someone like me who they can hopefully relate to. It’s nice to have that opportunity to do well and give that motivation and sense of hope to people trying to achieve their dreams. I love that! Switching gears, I want to talk Crystal Palace. You’ve said making the move to this club was about taking the next step in your career, but growth is often uncomfortable.”
