GHANAIAN SOCIAL advocate and media personality, Portia Nana Akua Pinamang, has raised an urgent concern over the rising abuse of Red 225, a highly addictive opioid that is rapidly destroying the lives of Ghanaian youth.
In a recent episode of her show, “Unfiltered Thoughts”, she described the situation as a national emergency, warning that the country is burning from within.
Known on the streets as “Wonim Red,” the drug has been linked to numerous cases of public collapses, mental breakdowns, and death among young people. Current data shows that 8 percent of Ghanaian youth are engaged in hard drugs, including opioids like Red 225, while 17 percent use marijuana and 13 percent consume alcohol.
Akua Pinamang openly blamed institutions like the Food and Drugs Authority for failing to regulate the entry and distribution of the drug. She further criticised the Customs Division for allowing dangerous substances through the ports, and National Security for focusing more on monitoring citizens than tackling drug networks. She also held political leaders from both major parties responsible, for neglecting youth welfare in favour of power struggles and public appearances.
She emphasised that, addiction is a symptom of deeper issues such as unemployment, a broken education system, poverty, and a lack of proper parenting.
Akua Pinamang has called for immediate action, including the arrest of key suppliers, the establishment of national rehabilitation centres, and systemic reforms to address the root causes of youth drug addiction.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Caucus has firmly stated that it has not authorized any interference in the ongoing review of the sanitation module contract between the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and Zoomlion Ghana Limited.
In a statement issued by Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Mahama Ayariga, the caucus clarified that neither the Sanitation Committee of Parliament nor any of its members have been empowered to influence the YEA’s decisions regarding the controversial contract.
President John Mahama has announced that Ghana will now observe July 1st, traditionally celebrated as Republic Day, as the country’s official National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.
The President made the declaration during the inauguration of the planning committee for the new national event. He said the peace and unity Ghana continues to enjoy should not be taken for granted.
Speaking at the event, President Mahama stated, “One of Ghana’s greatest blessings is the harmony with which we practice our diverse faiths. Christians, Muslims and traditionalists, we worship differently but we work together as one people. This is a national treasure that we must never take for granted.”
Quoting both the Qur’an and the Bible, he explained that Ghana stands as a shining example of religious tolerance in a divided world. “In a world where religion often divides, in Ghana, we shine as an example of our unity in diversity,” he said.
President Mahama cited Sura Al-Hujurat Chapter 49:13 from the Qur’an and Romans 12:18 from the Bible to emphasise the value of peaceful coexistence.
“This is the spirit with which we must move forward, and so with conviction, reverence and unity of purpose, I hereby declare the Republic Day 1st of July of every year also as Ghana’s official National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving,” he declared.
The planning committee for the event will be chaired by former minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, who pledged full commitment to making the day meaningful and unifying for all Ghanaians.
In his remarks, Mr Afriyie Ankrah said, “We assure you, Mr President and the good people of Ghana that we will discharge our duties with diligence and dedication. We understand the weight of the responsibility entrusted to us.”
He added that the event will not just be another national occasion, but a spiritual journey for the nation.
“It is about nurturing a spiritual culture of gratitude, about fostering unity in diversity and about elevating our national consciousness to appreciate the hand of God in the affairs of our country,” he said.
The committee chairman also promised to ensure broad and inclusive engagement across the country. “We will consult broadly, we will engage inclusively, we will bring everybody on board from every region, every faith, every background because the national day of thanksgiving belongs to all of us,” he assured.
With hope, Mr Afriyie said that Ghana’s example would serve as inspiration beyond its borders.
“It is our hope and prayer that the work we do will not only make Ghana proud but will serve as inspiration to other nations that the people who acknowledge God, give thanks to Him and live in unity can achieve their impossible,” he said.

Artiste manager and media personality Sammy Flex has weighed in on the ongoing copyright controversy involving rapper Medikal and Ghanaian group Alabaster Box.
According to him, the situation appears to be an unfortunate oversight on the part of Medikal’s team, including the producer who worked on the song.
Medikal recently released a track titled Welcome to Africa, which has landed him in legal trouble with Alabaster Box. The group accuses him of unlawfully sampling their hit song Akwaaba without permission.
Speaking on Joy Prime TV, Sammy Flex expressed his belief that Medikal and his management did not deliberately use the original material with malicious intent.
“I can tell you Team Medikal had no idea of what was going to happen because that was so clear, that was so vivid, and you could not skip it,” he said.
He emphasised that the issue could have been avoided had Medikal’s management team, including the producer, exercised more diligence during the production process.
“If they knew, including the producer who worked on the song, they wouldn’t have done that. The producer should have known better. To them, they thought they were not taking the original song of Alabaster Box; they believed they were creating their own thing,” he explained.
Sammy Flex believes the situation was not born out of disregard for intellectual property, but rather a lack of awareness about the implications of sampling someone else’s music.
“I am so sure they were not aware of the implications, that’s the reason they have fallen into that trap at the moment,” he added.
Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem Sai
The Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem Sai, has stated that he believes the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo was reached through consensus by the Council of State, rather than just a formal vote.
In an interview with JoyNews on April 22, 2025, regarding the Chief Justice’s suspension, Srem-Sai emphasised that the president did not act in accordance with advice.
However, he expressed confidence that the official statement clearly indicated the president made an independent decision.
“He did not act in accordance with advice. I’m sure the statement would have made it clear that the president made a decision. So, I am aware that that is what happened, and that is what the communication from the presidency also published,” he said.
When asked whether the Chief Justice’s suspension was a unanimous recommendation, the Deputy Attorney General stated that he did not believe such details would be disclosed.
He also expressed his belief that the Council of State primarily operates through consensus rather than formal voting.
“I don’t think that will be made known because the council… and I’m happy that my very learned senior, who was a member of the Council of State, would inform the public that the Council of State mostly work with consensus; they hardly go with votes and counting and all that. So, I believe that this decision or this advice also was made by way of consensus rather than by counting votes,” he stated.

AfCFTA seeks to eliminate trade barriers and promote intra-African trade
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents a significant opportunity for trade growth and economic development in Africa, the World Bank has said amid recent trade tensions.
It has, therefore, urged African governments to provide an enabling environment to expand and make its markets available to each other for enhanced intra-continental trade.
In the 31st edition of the Africa’s Pulse report, the Bank noted that Sub-Saharan Africa faced heightened uncertainty due to changes in trade dynamics, regional conflict, and climate change affecting people and crops.
It also indicated that such development would have both direct and indirect impacts of policy changes materialising and evolving over time.
“African economies have the option to liberalise and diversify their markets, including leveraging the African Continent Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to boost regional trade, to expand economic activity and provide jobs for young people,” the Bank noted.
The report, focusing on “Improving governance and delivering for people in Africa,” observed that economic growth in the region was showing some resilience despite uncertainty in the global economy and restricted fiscal space.
It projected a 3.5 per cent growth for the region for 2025 with a further increase to 4.3 per cent in 2026 and 2027, citing increased private consumption and investments as inflation cools down and currencies stabilise.
The projections by the World Bank were not too far from those by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which expected the region to grow by 3.8 per cent in 2025 and improve further to 4.2 per cent in 2026.
“However, growth is still not strong enough to significantly reduce poverty and meet people’s aspirations,” the Bank flagged as a concern, urging urgent reforms to match growth opportunities with ‘good jobs’ for its young population.
“There is a growing gap between people’s aspirations for good jobs and functioning public services and often sub-optimal markets and institutions,” said Andrew Dabalen, World Bank Chief Economist for the Africa Region.
“Urgent reforms, backed by more competition, transparency and accountability, will be key to attract private investments, increase public revenue, and create more economic opportunity for millions of Africans entering the workforce each year,” he stated.
The report noted that the region was faced with high debt and declining global aid, with a decline in real income per capita in 2025 expected to be below the two per cent in peak in 2015.
It urged countries to seize the opportunity to increase efficiency in government spending to provide better access to essential services like health, education, water and electricity.
Additionally, the region was to improve public services, provide a fair tax system, stronger accountability and clear market rules to help businesses compete, grow, and create jobs, helping strengthen the relationship between governments and taxpayers, the Bank said.

According to a report by GhOne TV on Friday, 25th April, 2025, Kennedy Agyapong, a popular member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has donated ₵1 million to support the party in paying arrears owed to its workers.
This donation is meant to help settle debts the party owes to polling station agents and other workers who helped during the 2024 general elections.
The Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr. Ransford Anertey Abbey, has indicated that despite the myriad of challenges bedevilling the cocoa sector, COCOBOD remains committed to improving the living conditions of cocoa farmers across the country.
Speaking at a farmers’ rally held at Attronso in the Sefwi Bekwai District during his three-day maiden visit to the Western North Region, Dr. Ransford Abbey disclosed that plans are underway to review the producer price of cocoa for the 2025/2026 season.
This, he noted, is part of efforts to demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of cocoa farmers and attracting the younger generation to the sector.
“Despite our financial constraints…the management of COCOBOD is committed to offering cocoa farmers a better price for their produce,” he emphasized.
The COCOBOD CEO also used the opportunity to bemoan the ageing population of cocoa farmers, describing it as a threat to the long-term sustainability of the sector.
He emphasised the importance of attracting youth into agriculture through modernisation and innovation.
“We are working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture to modernize cocoa farming. By introducing advanced tools and equipment, we aim to make the sector more lucrative and appealing to young people,” he stated.
On climate change, he announced plans to prioritize irrigation systems on cocoa farms to mitigate the unpredictable rainfall patterns.
He urged farmers to join cooperatives, which would allow COCOBOD to implement irrigation projects more effectively when rolled out.
“We cannot implement irrigation systems for individual farmers, it’s costly, and access to water sources has been severely affected by illegal mining (galamsey). Cooperative farming is the way forward,” he explained.
He also disclosed that efforts to amend existing laws protecting cocoa trees will help to secure Ghana’s cocoa industry from environmental threats. He further said all relevant stakeholders are being involved in this painstaking process to achieve a more robust legal regime for crop protection.
“Cocoa farming is a source of generational wealth; we need laws to protect cocoa trees and stop the destruction caused by galamsey operators,” he said.
Dr. Abbey assured farmers of the timely supply of fertilisers and agrochemicals and called on all to support COCOBOD’s efforts at preventing the diversion of essential farming inputs.
“These inputs are procured with significant investment to reduce the burden on farmers. I will personally ensure that any misconduct or diversion is addressed, and if anybody is found complicit in diversion, they will be held accountable,” he said.
He urged all stakeholders within the cocoa value chain to unite and support his administration in revitalising and sustaining the sector.
Dr. Abbey was accompanied by members of COCOBOD management during the tour.

Prof Fred Binka, Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences
A former Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Prof Fred Binka, has stated that Ghana has the potential to eliminate malaria with the right resources and commitment.
According to Prof Binka, the main challenge facing Ghana’s malaria elimination efforts is the lack of financial resources to procure necessary commodities and implement the national malaria elimination plan.
“The main challenge facing Ghana’s malaria elimination efforts is the lack of financial resources to procure necessary commodities and implement the national malaria elimination plan,” he said.
He stressed the need to decentralise malaria interventions to the district levels, allowing for more targeted and effective efforts.
According to a Ghanaian Times report on April 25, 2025, Prof Binka highlighted the importance of community engagements and participation in Ghana’s malaria elimination efforts, urging individuals to contribute by sleeping under treated mosquito nets and seeking prompt treatment when symptoms arise.
Speaking on the theme of the 2025 World Malaria Day celebration, ‘Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, reignite,’ Prof Binka said it was a clarion call to refocus on malaria and commit resources to eliminate the disease.
“With the right resources and commitment, Ghana can join the ranks of countries that have successfully eliminated malaria,” he indicated.
His remarks come as Ghana pursues its National Malaria Elimination Strategic Plan 2024-2028, aiming to reduce malaria deaths by 100% and cases by 50% by 2028.
Ghana has made significant progress in reducing malaria deaths and parasite prevalence in recent years, and Prof Binka believes that with the right resources, the country can join the ranks of those that have successfully eliminated the disease.
Ghana has, meanwhile, made significant progress regarding malaria control over the years.
For instance, deaths due to malaria have reduced from 2,799 in 2012 to 151 in 2022. Malaria prevalence has also declined from 27.5% in 2011 to 8.6% in 2022 while confirmed malaria cases per 1000 population has reduced from 192 in 2019 to 159 per 1000 in 2020.
Despite these achievements, malaria remains a significant public health problem in Ghana

A coalition of political parties, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced plans to stage a nationwide demonstration on Monday, May 5, to protest the suspension of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as Chief Justice.
The parties say the protest is a stand in defense of Ghana’s constitutional order and the independence of the judiciary.
The decision was made during an emergency meeting held on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
Other participating parties include the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), Ghana Union Movement (GUM), among others.
President John Dramani Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo on Tuesday, April 22, after a prima facie case was established in relation to three separate petitions calling for her removal. The decision was made under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, following consultations with the Council of State. A five-member committee has since been formed to investigate the allegations.
In a joint statement issued on Friday, April 25, the political parties condemned the suspension, calling it a direct assault on judicial independence.
“The blatant disregard for the rule of law is not merely a political matter but rather an assault on the very soul of our democracy,” the statement said.
They further accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of a consistent pattern of judicial intimidation, referencing past events.
“The disturbing trend of judicial intimidation by the NDC is not new. The pattern is undeniable. A case in reference is the NDC failed plot in 2010 to remove Ghana’s first female Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood,” the statement asserted.

National Signals Bureau ex-boss Kwabena Adu Boahene and wife sue AG Dominic Ayine for defamation

Kwabena Adu Boahene, a former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, and his wife have filed a defamation lawsuit against the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, over remarks made at a press conference on March 24, 2025.
In their suit, the couple argues that Dr Ayine falsely implicated them in corruption, embezzlement, and money laundering activities.
They claim the allegations, made publicly, have gravely damaged their reputation and subjected their family — particularly their children — to ridicule and emotional hardship, including being mocked by peers at school.
The complaint highlights that the damaging remarks were not only made verbally but were also published online and circulated extensively through social media platforms and news agencies, worsening the harm to their standing in society.
Kwabena Adu Boahene and his wife further assert that Dr Ayine, acting beyond his constitutional powers, made prejudicial statements that undermined their right to be presumed innocent.
They allege that the Attorney General’s comments were “reckless, lacked honesty”, and were made in collaboration with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), leading to their wrongful arrest and detention without due process.
Their statement of case outlines several grievances, including:
Branding them as criminals without judicial confirmation.
Spreading false claims about their travel activities and financial dealings.
Disclosing sensitive national security information.
Attempting to manipulate public perception and suggest punitive measures ahead of any court ruling.
The couple maintains that these actions were motivated by malice and constituted an abuse of public office intended to inflict lasting harm on their reputation.
Accordingly, they are seeking:
Substantial exemplary and punitive damages for the defamatory claims made at the press conference.
A perpetual injunction to restrain further publication of similar allegations.
Recovery of legal costs incurred in pursuing the action.

Reports have indicated that banks in Ghana lose approximately GH¢271,233 to fraudulent activities daily, amounting to about GH¢8.25 million monthly and GH¢99 million annually.
This significant revenue loss, recorded in 2024, highlights the damaging impact of fraudulent activities on the financial system.
To combat this issue, Professor Isaac Boadi, Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA), has outlined steps the government and the Bank of Ghana can take to reduce Value at Risk (VaR) and fraud.
He recommended a multi-faceted approach, including investing in advanced fraud detection technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to identify suspicious transactions in real time.
According to him, the central bank must enforce stricter penalties for financial institutions that fail to implement robust anti-fraud measures, including sanctions and fines.
He also called for an expedited legal process for prosecuting fraud cases, arguing that swift justice would serve as a deterrent to potential offenders.
Furthermore, Professor Boadi emphasized the need for collaboration between the Bank of Ghana and the judiciary to establish specialized courts dedicated to financial crimes.
Regarding education, he urged the government to raise awareness about fraud and encourage whistleblowing.
He concluded that implementing these measures would help protect the economy from the harmful effects of financial fraud.

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has intercepted 73 slabs of suspected cocaine at Swiss Port in Tema, Greater Accra Region, during a routine inspection on Wednesday, April 23, 2024.
The illicit cargo, weighing approximately 89.74 kilograms, was concealed within a consignment set for export to the Netherlands. Authorities said the seizure forms part of heightened efforts to clamp down on drug trafficking through the country’s ports.
Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the attempted shipment and are currently in NACOC custody. Investigations are underway to trace the source, ownership, and intended recipients of the narcotics.
This latest bust follows a major interception on March 4, 2025, when the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), working with NACOC, uncovered a massive 3.3-tonne consignment of cocaine hidden in a tipper truck traveling from Takoradi to Accra.
The operation at Pedu Junction in Cape Coast led to the discovery of 143 sacks containing 2,974 kilograms of cocaine buried under sand. Two suspects, Isaac Quaicoe and Kenneth Cobbinah, were arrested during the operation.
Further intelligence-led investigations on March 8, 2025 led to a raid on a residence where an additional 13 sacks and one bag containing 345.07 kilograms of suspected cocaine were seized.
Laboratory tests confirmed the total quantity—3,319.68 kilograms—as high-purity cocaine, ranging between 50% and 70% purity. The consignment, estimated to be worth over $350 million, is believed to have entered the country through fishing vessels.

Tema, April 25, GNA – The Tema Traditional Council (TTC) has expressed disappointment with President John Dramani Mahama’s nomination of Ms Ebi Bright as the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive.
Ms Bright, a three-time National Democratic Congress (NDC) Tema Central parliamentary candidate, was nominated as the first female MCE of the Tema Metro despite several calls on the president by the council requesting a native to occupy the position.
Reacting to the announcement of the nomination, the council indicated that they were displeased with the manner the NDC has dealt with the natives of Tema.
Nii Amarh Soumponu II, the Tema Shipi and Stool Secretary, addressing the media, stressed that even though the Tema paramountcy has three assemblies within its jurisdiction, they only asked for the Tema Metro seat to be reserved for indigenes, just as it had been done in other coastal areas from Keta in the Volta Region to Axim in the Western Region.
Nii Soumponu stated that, “All these places have indigenes appointed to the position, so we are unable to come to terms with how come Tema has been secluded from having one of its own assigned to this position. We are beginning to wonder whether we are being treated as foreigners on our land. Tema belongs to the people of Tema, so, if a situation arises where our neighbouring or sister towns are given such positions, and the government decides otherwise for us.”
He stated that it was unfortunate that they were being turned into slaves on their land, as, according to him, their farmlands were used for industries, depriving them of their livelihood, and now they were being denied some respect by the government.
The council debunked the public assertion that they were fighting the non-indigenous, emphasising that “We are not fighting non-indigenous if that is so; we won’t have even
accepted them as residents of Tema in the first place, but we want everyone to know that we are being treated unfairly on our own land.”
They added that, “We can’t fight the government; we won’t embark on violent activities, but we want them to understand that we are not happy with the way they have treated us.”

Sebrepor, April 25, GNA – The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA) has conducted a Community Needs Assessment engagement for residents of Kakasunka, Mlitsakpo, Sebrepor, Bethlehem, and Gbetsile, collectively under the KAMSBEG Zonal Council.
The engagement formed part of the preparatory activities towards the formulation of the 2026 to 2029 Medium-Term Development Plan (MTDP), in line with the National Development Planning (System) Act, 1994 (Act 480).
The MTDP is also designed to ensure that the Assembly’s local development priorities were aligned with the Medium-Term National Development Policy Framework (MTNDPF), as well as national and global development goals such as Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs.)
Madam Zubaida Damago, the Senior Development Planning Officer at the KKMA, addressing the participants, emphasised that the Community Needs Assessment was a critical step in the planning process and it provides a participatory platform for residents to voice their developmental challenges, aspirations, and priorities.
Madam Damago stated that “this engagement empowers community members to collectively identify and analyse the key issues affecting their localities because sustainable development is a shared journey, not a top-down directive”.
She said some recurring concerns across the assembly’s outreach sessions included poor road infrastructure, inadequate access to quality healthcare, and educational challenges.
Madam Damago urged community members to take ownership of the planning process by actively participating in identifying and prioritising their needs, indicating
that “when residents become agents of change instead of passive observers, we are more likely to achieve inclusive and responsive development outcomes.”
She said citizen engagement enhances participatory governance, strengthened transparency, and ensured that planning outcomes were both people-centered and evidence-driven.
“Our goal is to ensure the developmental priorities set would truly reflect the needs, aspirations and challenges of the residents,” she reiterated.
Reflecting on the performance of the 2022–2025 MTDP, she said 342 out of 357, planned interventions had been implemented as of the first quarter of 2025, covering key development dimensions such as economic and social development, environment, infrastructure, human settlements, governance, corruption, public accountability, emergency planning and COVID-19 response, implementation, as well as coordination, monitoring, and evaluation.
Notable achievements included the construction of a CHPS compound at Mlitsakpo and the completion of a dormitory block at the Kpone Senior High School.
Madam Damago further revealed that proposals from the community such as the construction of additional school infrastructure, improvements in drainage and roads, and enhanced healthcare and security services would be factored into the upcoming 2026-2029 Medium-Term Development Plan.
The session was well attended by a broad section of stakeholders, including traditional leaders, assembly members, religious leaders, representatives from youth and women’s groups, persons with disabilities, local business owners, school authorities, civil society organisations, and officials from decentralised departments.
Their contributions provided a holistic perspective on community development needs and reaffirmed the shared commitment to collaborative planning and inclusive governance.
The Ghanaian delegation, led by Minister for Finance Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, held a high-level engagement with global investors on the sidelines of the ongoing International Monetary Fund-World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C.
The event, hosted by the international law firm Hogan Lovells, brought together key stakeholders to deliberate on Ghana’s economic recovery strategy, progress under the IMF programme, and future investment prospects.
The delegation included the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, and Seth Terkper, Presidential Advisor on the Economy. Together, they presented a unified front on Ghana’s efforts to reset its economy and restore market confidence following years of macroeconomic challenges and sovereign debt restructuring.
In his keynote presentation, Dr. Forson emphasised the government’s commitment to prudent fiscal management, supported by robust reforms in public financial management, tax administration, and expenditure controls.
“The 2025 Budget marks a turning point,” he noted. “It is about restoring fiscal responsibility, ensuring debt sustainability, and fostering inclusive growth through job creation and social protection.”
Dr Asiama highlighted the central bank’s inflation-targeting policy and monetary tightening stance, which have contributed to currency stability and improving reserve buffers.
He reaffirmed the Bank of Ghana’s resolve to maintain price stability while supporting financial system resilience and growth.
The presentation showcased Ghana’s macroeconomic progress, including a rebound in GDP growth to 5.7% in 2024, declining inflation, and a debt-to-GDP ratio on track to fall below 55% by end-2025. The team also spotlighted key structural reforms, such as the operationalization of the single treasury account for the energy sector and amendments to the PFM and Procurement Acts to curb arrears and inefficiencies.
Investors were updated on the status of Ghana’s debt restructuring, with over 93% of eligible public debt already restructured. This milestone, the delegation noted, positions Ghana for positive credit rating reviews and eventual reentry into the international capital markets.
Mr. Terkper underscored the importance of credibility and transparency in rebuilding trust with the investor community.
“Our actions are deliberate and structured to align with long-term economic transformation. Ghana is open for business,” he said.
The investor dialogue provided an opportunity for Ghana to reinforce its reform agenda and assure creditors of its commitment to sustained macroeconomic stability and growth.

Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has issued a directive requiring that all newly filed cases and applications in the country’s superior courts be submitted to his office.
This initiative aims to streamline court processes and enhance efficiency.
Effective April 23, 2025, and communicated through the Deputy Judicial Secretary, the directive applies to registrars of the Supreme Court, High Courts, and Courts of Appeal.
The Chief Justice has mandated that all new cases, applications, and requests for hearing dates be submitted to a centralised unit for assignment and scheduling.
The goal of this move is to establish a more organized and transparent system for case allocation and hearing date management.
According to the memo, all fresh filings, whether applications or cases, must be submitted to the Acting Chief Justice to facilitate court assignments or to empanel judges when multiple courts are involved.
By centralising this process, the judiciary aims to reduce delays and promote fairness in the assignment of cases to judges.
This directive is expected to improve case management, decrease backlogs, and enhance accountability within the judicial system.
It also places the scheduling of hearing dates under the direct supervision of the Chief Justice.
Registrars across all courts have been instructed to comply with the new procedure, which will be closely monitored for effectiveness.
The memo emphasises that this approach replaces all previous guidelines regarding court assignments and hearing schedules and will remain in effect until further notice.
All court registrars nationwide are required to strictly adhere to this new order.

The management of the Kumasi South Regional Hospital is urging the government to fast-track the commissioning of the Sewua Hospital to help address the acute congestion and limited resources it is currently grappling with.
This call was made during a working visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health to the Kumasi South and Komfo Anokye Teaching hospitals.
The visit forms part of Parliament’s efforts to gain firsthand insight into healthcare delivery across the country by directly engaging health professionals and assessing service challenges on the ground.
In a presentation to the committee, Dr Kwame Ofori Boadu, Medical Director of Kumasi South Hospital, underscored the critical need to expand the hospital’s infrastructure.

A Consulting Partner at Deloitte Ghana, Serwa Atiase Dzogbenuku has stated that the 10% tariff imposed by the US government presents an opportunity for Ghana to emerge stronger and bigger.
According to her, the tariff will not have a significant impact on the Ghanaian economy since the US is not a major trading partner of Ghana, compared with the level of trade with countries like the United Arab Emirates and China.
Sharing her perspectives on the topic “US Tariffs: Navigating the Challenges and Creating Opportunities for the Ghanaian Economy” at a Thought Leadership event organized by the Canada Ghana Chamber of Commerce, Madam Dzogbenuku said despite the anticipated associated challenges the tariffs posed to some sectors, it offers a unique opportunity for the country to strengthen domestic industries, diversify trade partnerships, and enhance economic resilience.
Opportunities for Ghana
Amidst the global economic uncertainties worsened by US tariffs, gold prices have surged, reaching record highs of $3,000 per ounce in March 2025 as reported by the Financial Times. The rise in gold prices is driven by investors seeking safe-haven assets in times of uncertainty.
Serwa Atiase Dzogbenuku said the increased demand for gold has the potential to boost Ghana’s external revenue, supporting the country’s foreign exchange and contributing to the stabilisation of the Ghana Cedi.
On supply chain alignment, she pointed out that Ghana, with its political stability, improving infrastructure, and expanding industrial base, can position itself as a preferred supplier of goods like cocoa derivatives, cashew nuts, and gold.
According to her, this window allows Ghana to capture new market share and strengthen long-term trade relationships.
She also indicated that the tariff-induced trade shifts present a unique chance to reorient Ghana’s economy from raw material exports to value-added production.
“By attracting investment into processing industries (especially cocoa, palm oil, and rubber), Ghana can build an export-driven manufacturing base to take advantage of the rising global demand for ethically sourced and sustainable products”, she mentioned.
Navigating the Challenges
Serwa said the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) serves as a strategic tool for Ghana to trade more easily with other African countries, to strengthen local value chains, and reduce the country’s reliance on distant markets like the US.
She also urged the government to invest more in agro-processing, manufacturing, and small industries to reduce dependence on finished goods imports.
She cited an example of a government initiative, the One District One Factory (1D1F) initiative implemented by the previous government to boost industrialisation in the country.

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong
Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has reportedly donated an amount of GH¢1 million to the party.
This is according to a report by Accra-based Starr 103.5 FM.
A post shared by the media house on X, on Friday, April 25, 2025, indicated that the donation was to aid the party to pay the arrears it is owing its workers.
The post, which featured a flyer with a picture of Ken Agyapong, a former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, was captioned: “Kennedy Agyapong donates 1 million cedis to NPP to pay arrears owed workers.”
Unconfirmed reports have indicated that workers of the NPP, the largest opposition political party in Ghana, are owed several months’ salaries.
Workers of the NPP at its national headquarters have reportedly not been paid for several months following the party’s loss in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Vice President of policy think tank IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, has raised red flags over Ghana’s potential early exit from its International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, warning that critical economic targets may become “irrelevant” by 2028 without the Fund’s oversight.
Speaking in an interview on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition on April 25, 2025, Simons criticised what he called the government’s “political optics over substance” approach, arguing that abandoning the IMF program prematurely risks derailing essential fiscal reforms.
Simons painted a stark picture of what an early exit could mean, stating, “The IMF will do a victory lap dance. The government will join them. And then we will conclude by 2028 that we have not met those targets.”
He stressed that while benchmarks like debt-to-GDP ratios (55% by 2028) remain crucial, Ghana’s tendency to treat IMF programs as mere financial transactions rather than structural reform opportunities undermines long-term stability.
“The targets are still relevant, but I think by that time, the targets will not be relevant. They will not be relevant anymore,” he said.
Simons further accused both the IMF and Ghanaian authorities of favoring positive messaging over measurable progress.
“The IMF itself admits the ‘signaling isn’t pretty,’ yet they’ve elevated optics above facts. The government will exploit this,” he pointed out.
He contrasted Ghana’s stance with that of peer nations, including Kenya, which exited its IMF program early but secured $1.5 billion from Gulf investors, and Nigeria, which avoided an IMF program altogether despite economic turbulence.
“If the IMF really wanted us to reach those targets, it should have encouraged the government when they said they wanted to extend,” he argued.
“That was the only way, from 2026 to 2028, that there could have been program levers to deliver those targets,” he added.
According to him, Ghana’s early exit is more about political expediency than economic prudence.
“This debate isn’t about staying or leaving the IMF; it’s about whether Ghana is serious about reform or just crafting a good story for investors,” he said.

The suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo by President John Dramani Mahama barely five months after the change in government was expected, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Mohammed Awal, has said.
In an interview with Joy Prime’s Roselyn Felli, Awal accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of diverting the attention of Ghanaians away from pressing issues by targeting the Chief Justice.
President Mahama asked the foremost judicial official to step aside following the establishment of a five-member committee to investigate three petitions filed against her. Myjoyonline.com understands two additional petitions have since been filed to get the Chief Justice out of office.
The presidency, which announced the suspension on Tuesday, said the action was in compliance with constitutional provisions and follows consultations with the Council of State.
The president cited Article 146(6) of the Constitution, which mandates the establishment of a committee to probe allegations against a superior court judge if a prima facie case is established.
According to the statement, President Mahama determined that sufficient grounds exist to warrant further inquiry.
However, the NPP communicator has jumped to the defence of the Chief Justice.
“I’m not surprised, even though I suspect that the NDC government is doing this to take our attention away from the existing issues we have in this country. Fourteen per cent electricity tariffs, ‘dumsor’ and fitting issues of galamsey and so on,” he complained.
Awal emphasised that the NDC’s history with judicial matters has been poor since the PNDC days. He cited the killing of three judges under the PNDC administration as an example.
“They were murdered in this country. Justice Sarkodie, Justice Agyie Agyapong, and a nursing mother who was also killed, all under the PNDC,” he recalled.
Mohammad Awal further condemned President Mahama over what he said was a violation of due process.
“We all know that indeed this process would have happened, but we were thinking that due process would be followed so that when the person is removed, we know that due process was followed.”
Reviewing the entire process, Mr. Awal was of the firm belief that the suspension was politically motivated because the president proceeded despite an injunction application at the Supreme Court.
Addressing the petition, Mr. Awal said, “Yes, it can even be fifty. There is nothing wrong with that. The most important thing is that there must be prima facie, there must be some amount of guilt in it, before you can even suspend the person. You can still petition hundreds, and if the person is innocent, the person will go unscathed”.

It’s definitely a worrying situation unfolding in Ghana. Here’s a simpler version of the article, keeping it around 600 words:
Big Confusion as Politician’s Husband is Arrested
Something strange and upsetting has happened in Ghana. The husband of a well-known politician has been taken into custody by the government’s security team. This arrest is confusing and has made many people in Ghana worried. It’s also started new discussions about fairness, power, and following the correct legal steps in Ghana’s democracy.
The man who was arrested is Peter Mensah. His wife is Gifty Oware Aboagye, a well-known figure in politics. It’s being said that the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) officers took Mr. Mensah away in a way that seems odd.
According to PK Sarpong, who often shares his opinions and is part of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Mensah was arrested simply because his wife is sick in the hospital and cannot help with an investigation. This investigation is connected to the National Service Secretariat (NSS), an organization that helps young people serve their country.
Mr. Sarpong quoted the officers as saying something very concerning to Mr. Mensah: “Because your wife cannot help us with this issue right now, we are keeping you here so you can help us instead.” This explanation, or the lack of a good explanation, has made many people upset. Lawyers and groups that watch out for people’s rights are asking if there’s any good reason for this kind of action.
Adding to the worry, it’s also being reported that NIB officers tried to take Mrs. Gifty Oware Aboagye from her hospital bed. They wanted her to be part of the investigation even though she was unwell. However, the doctors and nurses at the hospital stopped this from happening because they said she was too sick to leave.
Up to this point, no official charges have been made against Mrs. Gifty Oware or anyone else involved with the issues at the NSS. So, the decision to arrest her husband has left many Ghanaians wondering what the real reasons are behind the security agency’s actions. Are they following proper investigation methods, or is this an unfair use of their power?
As the people of Ghana wait for more information, this event highlights growing concerns about how powerful government agencies use their authority. This is especially true when politics and personal lives get mixed together in such a disturbing way. People are asking if it’s right for the actions of one person to lead to the arrest of their family member, especially when that person is sick and unable to participate.
This situation is making many think about the importance of fairness and following the correct legal procedures for everyone. It’s also raising questions about how much power the government’s security agencies should have and how they use it.
The fact that Mrs. Gifty Oware is a well-known political figure adds another layer of complexity to this situation. Some people might see this as a politically motivated action, while others believe it’s simply part of an investigation that needs to be done.
Regardless of the reasons, the arrest of Mr. Mensah has created a lot of unease and uncertainty in Ghana. People are looking for clear answers and want to be sure that justice is being served fairly and that the rights of all citizens are being respected, no matter who they are connected to.
The coming days and weeks will likely bring more information about this case. Ghanaians will be watching closely to see how this situation unfolds and what it means for the rule of law and the protection of individual rights in their country. It’s a moment that calls for transparency and a commitment to ensuring that justice is not only done but is also seen to be done.
Eugene Boakye Antwi, former MP for Subin constituency
Former Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to explore the findings of the party’s committee reports to swiftly resolve issues that led to the party’s debacle in the 2024 Election because Ghanaians are closely watching to ascertain if they have changed.
He cited what he termed as soft governance issues, as one of the reasons behind the poor performance of the party in the last general elections.
Speaking to the party’s efforts to regroup and revitalise grassroot supporters, on Nhyira FM, on April 24, 2025, he cautioned the NPP to demonstrate the right attitude and present reforms that will convince Ghanaians that they have changed.
“Apart from the findings that Ghanaian youth did not vote for the party in the 2024 Election, soft governance issues such as a former Chief Justice picketing with other pensioners, galamsey menace, police recruitment, corruption, among other things, caused the party’s defeat,” he said.
He advised the leadership to make use of the Prof Mike Oquaye report and other committee reports conducted by the party to formulate a cogent strategy for the next election in 2028.
“Ghanaians are watching if we have changed and that is what will inform who will be chosen to lead the party.
“Remember that the message is as good as the messenger. Ghanaians are looking for responsible leadership in the party. They live with us in our communities and see our deeds. So, let’s be mindful of our engagements even in our communities,” he said.
On another score, he lauded the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, for apologising to Ghanaians at the launch of the nationwide tour, dubbed the “Thank You Tour”.
“I am happy that the General Secretary apologised to electorates and assured that they will right the wrongs that led to the unfortunate turn of events,” he said.

Ghanaian-based Liberian singer and songwriter, Jonathan Lee Pratt, popularly known as J ZyNo, has credited Ghana as his foundation in music, where he got massive recognition.
Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM with Andy Dosty on April 24, 2025, J ZyNo disclosed that he got his first global hit in Ghana and besides him being a Liberian, he prefers to promote his music in Ghana.
His breakthrough came with the hit single, “Butta my bread,” featuring Lasmid, which went global, including it being at number 50 on the billboard US.
“Ghana is number one because, to be honest, this is where my foundation is when it comes to music. This is where I have my DJs and my dancers, promoters; this is where I have that spirit as a musician.
“Yes, I’m from Liberia, but I started music here so if I don’t start my promotion and stuff from here, I don’t feel like I’m promoting even if I’m in the US or in Europe and I drop a song there. I feel like I need to do fast and go back to Ghana because this is where it started. It worked for me when it started here and I got my global hit song from here as well so Ghana is my base,” J ZyNo shared.
The singer also explained how he felt meeting Game for the first time and how he related with him when they met, stating; “The feel wasn’t like I was afraid of him because in his music videos, you will see guns and stuffs, I mean I saw a celebrity. Yes, I’m one, but no that’s a legend.
“Game trying to shake my hand, I rubbed my hand on my chest. Because if someone who make hits globally and I’m about to walk with him, shaking my hands, calling me king, I was blessed anyways. The feel was just exciting.”
Some Ghanaians have expressed their frustrations over persistent issues of poor call quality and network disruptions from telecommunication service providers in the country.
This follows recurring instances of network jamming during calls, with some cases where the network completely goes off, leaving users with no service and leaving them facing difficulties in making calls.
Speaking exclusively with GhanaWeb on April 24, 2025, several individuals stated that the unreliable networks disrupt their daily activities and significantly hinder the smooth operation of their businesses.
One of the interviewees, a commercial driver, shared his experience, stating that his network service occasionally goes off completely without any signal.
He added that the service only returns after he switches off his phone, removes the SIM card, and reinserts it.
“It is disturbing us because sometimes I want to make an emergency call but the network signal just goes off. Sometimes, you need to switch it off and back on before you can make a call which is disturbing,” he said.
Another individual echoed similar concerns about how the poor call network negatively impacts his business.
He explained that on several occasions, when attempting to make a call, he receives a notification that the recipient’s phone is off, even though the phone is actually on, expressing deep frustration over the situation.
“We use the network services for business transactions, so if I’m calling my client or supplier and the person is active but I’m not able to reach them, it actually affects business. They need to work on it because it’s bad. You could be calling someone nearby, but the response will say they cannot be reached or are unavailable,” he complained.
In light of this, they are calling on the government, particularly the Minister of Communications, Samuel Nartey George, to address the ongoing challenges with poor network connectivity and call quality.
“… All I want is for the government to help solve the network issues we are facing,” one of the interviewees said.
Meanwhile, speaking on the development exclusively with GhanaWeb’s Mandy Agyemang, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, acknowledged the existence of such challenges.
According to him, the Ministry of Communications is expected to roll out additional spectrum to telecommunication networks which will significantly enhance and improve the quality of network services and calls.
“… MTN and Telecel have a challenge with spectrum. The minister has given authorisation for MTN to be given some particular spectrum. He says Telecel are also to be given the spectrum, so, it is after that and when the spectrum has been deployed, that’s then we will begin to see some improvement in the quality of service,” he said.
Dr Ashigbey also highlighted some of the factors contributing to the poor quality of service, specifically citing the issue of fibre cuts, which occur when there is a break in an optical fibre.
He noted that efforts are currently underway to enhance the protection of fibre infrastructure and prevent such incidents, which often lead to network disruptions.
“Then also you have the challenges with fibre cuts and all of that has been happening and so those also result in the quality of service issues. I’m sure once we get all the spectrum issues dealt with, then we’ll begin to start seeing an improvement. There’s some work also going on to ensure that we can protect the fibre and all of that,” he said.
He indicated plans by the telecommunications chamber to collaboratively work with the communications and roads ministries, respectively, to implement legislative instruments that would make fibre cuts punishable, serving as a deterrent to potential offenders.
“We’re going to be working with the minister to put in place some legislative instruments to make it a bit more punitive so that those who cut the fibre, we can hold them responsible. I have had some engagement with the Minister of Roads as well who is also going to support in that particular direction. In May, there’s going to be a launch of a document. There is a standard specification that has been done for those who do the fibre, so, that those who also leave will do it according to a particular way of doing it.
“It’s a collective effort for all of us, including the media, the need to support in letting people realise the fact that the quality of service we get from telecommunications services is also based on the way we protect the telecommunication infrastructure,” he added.

The Founder of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga, has called out financial institutions in Ghana for sidelining local entrepreneurs in favour of foreign companies.
He argued that the country’s economic development strategy fails to empower Ghanaian businesses.
Speaking on GhanaWeb TV’s BizTech, hosted by Sisl Prempeh, the businessman stated that Ghana is neglecting the growth of its own citizens while supporting foreign corporations that reap greater benefits than indigenous enterprises.
Ayariga urged financial institutions to allocate a fair percentage of their resources to local entrepreneurs to create measurable impact.
“The problem is that we are not building individuals. We are building foreign companies that benefit more than local businessmen. I think the banks should open their wings, open up, and allow young Ghanaian businessmen to thrive,” he said on BizTech.
He added that; “The justification by banks that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and young entrepreneurs often lack the necessary documentation is just an excuse to deny them loan facilities and support.”
“It is not because SMEs lack the requisite documentation to access loans. It is just an excuse by the banks to deny them loan facilities and support,” Ayariga emphasised.
His comments contribute to growing calls for a financial ecosystem that is more inclusive of local businesses and better aligned with Ghana’s development goals.

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has confirmed that he will contest the General Secretary position of the party.
Speaking in an interview on UTV on Friday, April 25, 2025, Boakye Antwi stated that he would submit his nomination form when the party opens nominations for its national executive elections.
“God willing, if the party opens nominations, I will run for the General Secretary position,” he said in Twi.
The former Subin legislator asserted that he is the right man for the job because he plans to modernise the party.
“I am interested in the NPP General Secretary position now because I won’t just manage it, but I will modernize it for the future,” he said.
He indicated that the NPP must put its house in order to stand a chance of winning the 2028 general elections.
Boakye Antwi also mentioned that many NPP faithful have called for a ‘one-man, one-vote’ system in the party’s internal elections, from the selection of polling station executives to the presidential primaries, rather than the current delegate system.
