MTN MoMo Not Licensed For Cross Border Transactions To Nigeria – BoG

0

Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, BoG Governor

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has explained that MobileMoney Limited, the operator of MTN MoMo, has not been licensed to facilitate cross-border transactions with MTN Nigeria.

Clarifying ongoing developments in the fintech space, the BoG explained that it had granted Brij Fintech Ghana, a licensed Payment Service Provider (PSP), approval to pilot BrijX—a B2B Currency Swap Platform—under its regulatory sandbox programme.

The Bank of Ghana said in a release that while MTN MoMo is not licensed for cross-border transactions, the BrijX pilot represents a regulated initiative aimed at transforming digital payments within the region.

“Bank of Ghana has taken note of media publications suggesting that MTN Ghana has been licensed to conduct cross-border transactions with MTN in Nigeria. The Bank hereby states that MobileMoney Limited, providers of MoMo from MTN, has not been licensed or authorised to conduct cross-border transactions”, the release stated.

BrijX is designed to function as a digital marketplace, enabling direct currency swaps between the Ghanaian Cedi and the Nigerian Naira without requiring forex transactions or physical fund transfers across borders.

The platform collaborates with banks, mobile money operators, and licensed PSPs to facilitate seamless currency exchanges.

The BoG stressed that the BrijX pilot, which commenced live testing in February 2025, involves MTN MoMo customers and will soon expand to G-Money users.

However, the pilot operates under strict regulatory controls, including, transaction limits, restrictions on the number of participating customers, a defined testing period and full compliance with Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations

The BoG said it will at the conclusion of the pilot, assess the results to determine whether the BrijX model aligns with Ghana’s financial regulatory framework and potential future policies.

Students of Sokode Senior High Technical School have yet to return, despite the March 20 announcement for their resumption following the recent clash that led to the school’s closure.

This comes after the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Volta Region on February 23, indefinitely closed down Sokode Senior High Technical School following violent clashes between students and residents of the Sokode community.

The confrontation, which began on Saturday, February 22, stemmed from unresolved disagreements and resulted in injuries on both sides.

Among the injured is a journalist from Ho-based Swiss FM, who sustained severe wounds while covering the incident.

During a visit by Citi News, staff members were present, but no student had reported.

School management informed Citi News that parents are scheduled to meet key stakeholders on Monday, March 24, 2025, to discuss the aftermath of the incident.

Meanwhile, management is assuring parents that the school environment is safe for teaching and learning, as directed by the regional minister.

The land is still lying fallow

Sarah Adwoa Safo, former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya Sarah Adwoa Safo, former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya

Sarah Adwoa Safo, former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, has stated that after her father’s bus terminal was unjustifiably demolished, the land is still lying fallow.

“The land on which the bus terminal stood belongs to the government. It had been rented to us and we were making payments. What pains me the most is that, up until now, the land has been walled off, and nothing has been done with it,” she said in an explosive interview on Okay FM on March 20, 2025.

Speaking about the injustices she and her family suffered under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, Adwoa Safo narrated how her party targeted her father’s businesses at the time.

“The bus terminal that was demolished was located in Agbogbloshie near the ICGC church. One morning, we woke up to see a bulldozer demolishing the bus terminal. What hurts me is that they didn’t even inform us prior to the incident. We didn’t even pick a single computer or a piece of paper from that office. When I called Henry Quartey, the former Greater Accra Regional Minister, on the matter, he told me point blank that it was an order from above,” she recounted.

She lamented how subsequent calls to seek clarity on the incident went unanswered.

“I tried frantically to reach Henry Quartey for an explanation on the demolition many times, but he didn’t pick my calls,” she said.

According to her, Imperial Express Transport Service, the transport business of her father had been used to facilitate the movements of NPP voters over the years, so she found it absurd how the party targeted the business.

“My father, Apostle Dr Ing. Kwadwo Safo, had a transport company called Imperial Express, which operated buses traveling across the country and to neighboring countries, including Togo and Benin. Those were the same buses we used to transport voters to various parts of the country to vote for the party during elections,” she decried.

Sarah Adwoa Safo, has been reportedly invited by the NPP’s Disciplinary Committee after she went public to speak on some media platforms, about some happenings in the NPP and alleged victimization she suffered after she presented an audit which exposed corruption in the School Feeding Programme Initiative under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration.

BoG governor summoned by Parliament over collapse of banks in 2017

Johnson Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana Johnson Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has been summoned by Parliament to brief the House on the banking sector clean-up exercise that happened in 2017.

The governor is expected to appear in Parliament next week.

In 2017, the Ghanaian government, led by the former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, initiated a reform of the banking sector.

This overhaul resulted in the number of banks being reduced from 34 to 23. Additionally, 347 microfinance institutions, 15 savings and loans companies, and eight finance houses had their licenses revoked due to various corporate governance issues.

The cost of this intervention by the state, not including interest payments, was estimated at GH¢16.4 billion from 2017 to 2019.

However, the government later reported that the total expenditure on the banking sector clean-up reached approximately GH¢21 billion in 2020.

Several financial institutions that were affected by the license revocations have challenged the government’s decision in court, and these legal proceedings are ongoing.

Three key players who could decide Ghana’s fate against Chad

0

Jordan Ayew (L), Mohammed Kudus (M), Thomas Partey (R) Jordan Ayew (L), Mohammed Kudus (M), Thomas Partey (R)

The Black Stars take on Chad today, Friday, March 21, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium as they fight for an automatic qualification spot for the 2026 World Cup.

With Chad losing all four qualifying games, a match against Les Sao would normally be seen as a routine fixture for the Black Stars. However, their recent struggles have turned it into a crucial test.

Nonetheless, with the team eager to regain momentum and rally their supporters, the spotlight falls on key individuals who could make the difference.

Here are three crucial players who could decide Ghana’s fate in this must-win encounter:

Jordan Ayew

The Leicester City forward was part of the Black Stars team that could not qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. However, with Otto Addo handing him the armband, the onus is on Ayew to lead the charge.

The 33-year-old’s last goal for his club came in the Foxes’ 1–3 defeat to Liverpool in December 2024. However, when wearing the Black Stars jersey, Ayew has consistently showcased his knack for finding the net, delivering crucial goals when it matters most.

His goal against Mali earned all three points for the Black Stars, turning their struggling qualification campaign into a winning one.

Four days later, he hit a hat trick against the Central African Republic, putting the Black Stars level on points with Comoros.

If Ayew can replicate those exploits, it could be enough to propel the Black Stars to victory.

Thomas Partey

The midfielder has come under severe scrutiny and backlash from fans who believe the Arsenal man’s commitment to the Black Stars is not the same as what he shows for Arsenal.

At his best, Partey is simply unstoppable, as he proved in the 2022 World Cup qualifying playoffs against Nigeria. He not only found the net but also led the charge throughout the game, inspiring a memorable victory over Ghana’s fiercest rivals.

Injuries have limited him to just two of the Black Stars’ four qualifying matches, but in those appearances, he showcased his quality. He played a key role in Ghana’s comeback against the Central African Republic, providing the assist for Fatawu Issahaku’s crucial third goal.

Although reports indicate he declined the captaincy of the team, his leadership qualities, as Otto Addo mentioned, will be crucial if the Black Stars are to pick up all three points on Friday, March 21, 2025.

Mohammed Kudus

Kudus captained the team for Ghana’s doubleheader against Sudan in October 2024. However, his tenure as captain saw the Black Stars fail to win either of the two games played.

Nevertheless, Kudus’ talent means both fans and pundits now turn to the West Ham star to be the driving force for the team. On his day, the midfielder is unplayable and could thus become one of the key players for the team.

In a game that could see Chad put all their men behind the ball, Kudus’ ability to take on players could prove to be the cure the Black Stars need to unlock the defence of Les Sao.

How Can A Gospel Musician Go For BBL and Facelift? Evangelist Freda Afriyie Calls Out Empress Gifty

0

Ghanaian Evangelist and social media creator, Freda Afriyie, attacked gospel singer Empress Gifty Adorye for being a ‘fake’ woman of God who has undergone body and facial transformation.

Afriyie attacked the popular gospel singer in a viral video, claiming no gospel singer who has undergone such ‘worldly’ surgeries can be seen as a representative of God.

She said there are popular gospel singers who have undergone surgeries to fix their breasts, backsides and even their faces.

Afriyie said nobody who claims to represent the most High God would do such things because they are supposed to be vessels of God.

She said any gospel singer who does that obviously has no anointing on their life.

Gospel singer Empress Adorye has been in the news recently over transformations to her face.

She reportedly underwent some procedures to change the shape and look of her face. Adorye also fixed veneers in her mouth to give herself a pearly white smile.

Previously, Empress Adorye was accused of undergoing Brazilian B*tt Lifts. She also sometimes dresses in a way that people find distasteful for a gospel artist.

NPP Elders Allegedly Storm Adwoa Safo’s Home to Stop Her From Attending Interviews

0

Top NPP officials have allegedly stormed the home of former Dome Kwabenya Member of Parliament (MP), Sarah Adwoa Safo, to prevent her from honoring her interview commitments today, Friday, March 21, 2025.

Safo was scheduled for two interviews Friday morning, one on Kessben FM/TV and another on GhOne TV, however, she failed to turn up for both commitments.

Following her failure to attend the interviews, news emerged that she had been physically stopped from leaving her house by top NPP officials. Kessben TV reported via Facebook that the NPP executives stormed Safo’s home to prevent her from honoring her commitments.

Kessben TV shared on its Facebook page: “Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo has been ambushed by some Leadership of the NPP in her house to prevent her from honoring the scheduled interview on Kessben TV this morning,”

A later update, with more details, revealed that Safo and her party leaders were engaged in a ‘meeting’ which stopped her from making the interview. Kessben TV apologized for their inability to air the interview they had promised their listeners/viewers.

Adwoa Safo in recent days has shaken up the Ghanaian political space with exposés about the NPP party. She revealed the true reason behind her decision to travel abroad for a significant chunk of the party’s second term in office.

Safo also revealed how rot was endemic within the school feeding program and how President Akufo-Addo refused to intervene. Her revelations of deep party secrets led the NPP to call her to order but she refused, leading to the confrontation at her home Friday morning.

VRA/NEDCo Staff Oppose Abdul Jalil’s Director Of Public Affairs Post

0

The leadership of the staff groups of Volta River Authority (VRA)/Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has expressed profound revulsion and objection to the purported appointment of Mr. R.A. Abdul Jalil as the Director of Public Affairs of VRA.

According to the group, in a press statement, the appointment of Abdul Jalil who doubles as the Savannah Regional Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is not only irregular but also threatens the integrity and established protocols of the VRA operations under the VRA Act 46 as amended, and the recruitment processes and policies so adopted and practiced.

The group continued that this purported appointment is a flagrant disregard for VRA’s time-tested recruitment processes and policies.

“Managerial and Directorate positions in VRA are not filled with government appointment or from the Office of the President. This does not only set a dangerous precedent but also undermines the professional standards that have been the bedrock of VRA,” part of the statement read.

They added that Directorate positions are filled based on established procedures, ensuring fairness, competency, and meritocracy.

The statement added that “the purported appointment is in clear violation of the Senior Staff Conditions of Service and the Collective Agreement between management and the PSWU of TUC. The Conditions of Service clearly outline the processes for Managerial and Directorate appointments.”

The group was of the view that there are dedicated and serving employees who have served VRA over the years and have developed the competencies, exposure, institutional knowledge, and experiences to occupy the position.

“This purported appointment disregards the professional experiences, abilities and contribution of such staff who have diligently gone through the ranks. This purported appointment is not only a major source of de-motivation to the workforce, an affront to hard work and negatively affect productivity but also undermine career progression as well as succession planning within the VRA,” it read.

The labour group has called on the Acting Chief Executive of VRA to resist any pressure to enforce this purported appointment, insisting that Mr. R. A. Abdul Jalil, if qualified, must submit to the standard recruitment processes of the VRA and compete fairly with other qualified candidates as and when there is a vacancy.

Dr. Addison Installed a Secret Monitoring Device At BoG And Connected It To His Bedroom- Lawyer

0

A National Security operative and lawyer, Nii Kpakpo Samoa Addo, has alleged that Dr. Ernest Addison, former governor of the Bank of Ghana, installed a secret monitoring system and connected it to his bedroom that allowed him to remotely oversee operations at the central bank.

In a Facebook post, Nii Kpakpo Samoa Addo claimed that Dr. Addison had access to real-time surveillance of management meetings, staff movements, vault operations, and cash transactions from his bedroom. He alleged that the governor used this system to influence decisions based on live monitoring of activities at the Bank of Ghana.

Following a tip-off about cash movement at Dr. Ernest Addison’s residence, National Security operatives, armed with a court-issued search warrant, conducted a search of his home. Addo stated that the team removed CCTV cameras and other high-tech monitoring devices reportedly installed by the governor.

“Dr. Addison installed a back door system that ultimately monitors everything that happens at Bank of Ghana. In fact, in the comfort of his home, monitors mgt meetings, staff movements, vault and cash movements etc, and there’s the need to stop him. In effect, he’s at home calling the shots, based upon what he sees on his monitoring devices, he will call staff members for details.

In addition to some other activities that he’s alleged to have been engaged in, including cash movements in his house upon tipoff, the National Security decided to remove the CCTV cameras and other high tech monitoring devices he installed in his house.

Please note that, National Security went to the house with a search warrant from the court to do a specific search, and that’s exactly what they did, nothing more, nothing less” he wrote on Facebook.

Neither Dr. Addison nor Bank of Ghana has officially responded to the allegations. The development comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of the central bank’s former leadership and financial management.

Lack of access impeded firefighting efforts in Adum – Ashanti Security Coordinator

0

The Deputy Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, Alhaji Alhassan Tapsoba, says efforts are being made to clear blocked roads to allow firefighters access to the scene of the devastating fire at the Blue Light arena, near Hello FM, in Kumasi.

The fire, which began around 6 a.m., quickly spread, engulfing two-storey shops, as fire officers struggled to control the blaze.

His comments come after the fire caused extensive damage to the area, making it difficult for firefighters to reach the building.

Speaking to JoyNews’ Nana Boakye Yiadom, Mr Tapsoba explained that wooden structures built along the railway are the primary obstacles preventing fire fighters from reaching the scene.

“When we went upstairs with the minister, the fire was still raging, and there was no access. You can see there is water in the tankers, but accessing the fire remains the main issue,” he said.

Mr Tapsoba outlined the steps they plan to take to resolve the situation, stating that they would seek approval from the minister to clear the blocked roads using excavators and bulldozers.

“We are seeking the minister’s approval to clear the area so that the fire service can gain access. We will bring in excavators and bulldozers to clear the road,” he explained.

When asked how long it would take to bring the fire under control, Tapsoba estimated that it could take around three to four hours, provided the access issues are resolved.

He stressed that once the roadblocks are cleared, firefighting teams would be able to extinguish the blaze quickly.

Mr Tapsoba reassured the public and the traders that once the accessibility problems were addressed, the fire would be brought under control promptly.

He emphasised that clearing the blocked roads is a priority, which would allow the fire fighters to reach the affected area and bring the fire to an end as soon as possible.

Let us mobilise enough IGF for Kadjebi’s development -Regional Minister

0

By Daniel Agbesi Latsu

Kadjebi (O/R), March 21, GNA – Mr John Kwadwo Gyapong, the Oti Regional Minister, has called on the revenue collectors and technocrats at the Kadjebi District Assembly to help mobilise enough Internally Generated Funds (IGF) for the district’s rapid development.

He stated that the over-reliance on the District Assemblies’ Common Fund (DACF) was doing more harm than good to the assembly and emphasized that the district had more taxable revenue-generating activities that needed to be explored.

Mr Gyapong, made these statements during a meeting with the Kadjebi District Assembly staff at Kadjebi in the Oti Region.

The Regional Minister blamed the technocrats of the Assembly for not working hard enough to generate sufficient funds for the Assembly, as markets and ratable property abound in the district for levying.

“No exchange for fish, no yam, no cocoyam collections instead of payment”, he admonished. “Let us work hard to project Kadjebi on the world map as one of the best-performing districts in Ghana”, he added.

Mr. Gyapong, a 74-year-old native of Kadjebi, said he wanted to leave a legacy in Kadjebi and thus urged the natives of the district to help him succeed.

Rev. Harry Nii Kwatei Owoo, the Oti Regional Co-ordinating Director, who introduced the Regional Minister to the staff, said his visit was to gather first-hand information on the challenges confronting the District and how best to solve them.He urged the staff to work with dexterity, tact, and diligence for the progress of the district.

Mr. Cletus Chevure, the Kadjebi District Co-ordinating Director, commended the Regional Minister for the visit and appealed to him to ensure that Kadjebi receives its share of the national cake.

Mahama visits Adum, pledges support for fire victims

0

President John Dramani Mahama has visited the Central Business District of Adum in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to assess the aftermath of a devastating fire that destroyed hundreds of shops.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Friday, March 21, left traders distraught as they struggled to salvage their goods amidst the chaos.

During his visit, Mahama interacted with affected traders, expressing his sympathy and pledging his support.

He emphasised the need for swift action to assist those who have lost their livelihoods and called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire.

But he also cautioned the traders not to cook in the market as the use of cylinders were a contributing factor to the incident.

Meanwhile, the fire which started early Friday morning and quickly spread through the market, was fueled by flammable materials stored in the shops.

Firefighters faced challenges in containing the blaze due to obstructed access routes and delayed response times. Some traders blamed the incident on ongoing power outages, which they believe may have contributed to the fire.

President Mahama’s visit was met with gratitude and cheers from the traders.

‘If able-bodied military men failed, what can water guards do?’ – Mpraeso MP to Mahama

0

The Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku play videoThe Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku

The Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku, has weighed in on the ongoing discussions surrounding the deployment of 2,000 trained water guards.

As part of the government’s efforts to fight illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, announced on March 17, 2025, the commencement of a four-week training program for the first batch of 460 Blue Water Guards.

These guards, comprising both men and women, will patrol and protect water bodies from illegal miners operating within them.

They will also be responsible for providing round-the-clock monitoring and protection of the nation’s water bodies.

Speaking at the launch of the initiative at Ezinlibo, the minister emphasised the critical role of this program in combating galamsey.

“The protection of our river bodies is being entrusted to you. You cannot afford to be complacent or irresponsible in the discharge of your duties. Our rivers are more than just bodies of water; they are the lifeline of our communities. They provide drinking water, support agriculture, sustain fisheries, drive tourism and facilitate transportation.

“Yet, the selfish actions of illegal miners are robbing us of these vital resources. The Blue Water Initiative is our response — a comprehensive strategy to safeguard our water bodies and promote sustainable practices,” he stated.

However, speaking about the government’s initiative, Ansah Poku noted that during the NPP era, military personnel were deployed to combat the illegal mining menace, yet they were unsuccessful.

He questioned why able-bodied military men failed to address the issue, and now the task is being assigned to these young men and women.

“The galamseyers continue to destroy our river bodies and our forest, and I’m praying that the minister clamps down on them. Just to add, in recent times, I’ve seen the minister recruit some young men, ‘water police’, who will be protecting river bodies and protecting forests.

“Mr. Speaker, what somebody on social media said is that if able-bodied military men could not protect our river bodies and protect our forests, what are these young men going to do? But probably, maybe, in the spirit of David and Goliath, where David, in a very skinny way, could bring down Goliath, we are hoping that these young, untrained men are able to contribute to preserving our rivers and our forest,” he asserted.

Challenging times for Bank of Ghana’s monetary policy

0

By Dr. J. K. Kwakye1

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) will hold its 123rd 3-Day Meeting starting from Monday, 24th March, 2025, after which the Committee will announce its decision on the benchmark Policy Rate (PR).

At its last two meetings held in November and March, the MPC kept the PR unchanged at the previous rate of 27.00%, decisions that the Committee indicated were in response to higher inflation risks.

As was to be expected, the opinion of the public was divided as to the justification for these decisions, depending on where they perceived the relative risks to lie with respect to economic instability, on the one hand, and economic growth and employment, on the other hand.

The MPC faces even a more challenging decision this time round in the midst of persisting difficult economic environment, characterised by high inflation, unstable currency, still high debt, high unemployment and sub-optimal growth, amid a myriad of problems. Inflation has been stuck in the low twenties for more than two years, recording 23.2% in 2023 and 23.8% in 2024, with the latest rate at the end of February being 23.1%, all of them much higher than the BoG’s target of (8+/-2)%.

In the last two years or so, the cedi has depreciated markedly by 28% in 2023, 19% in 2024 and 5.4% between January 1 and March 18 this year. While this year’s depreciation is lower than the 6.2% recorded in the same period of 2024, it is still significant.

The overall fiscal deficit was -5.2% of GDP (on cash basis) in 2024, slightly above the limit of -5.0% in the suspended Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA). Economic growth in 2024 was, notably, significant at 5.7% (up from 3.1% in 2023), fuelled by the services, construction and mining sectors.

Against this generally gloomy economic backdrop, the Minister of Finance, on Tuesday, 17th March, presented the Government’s first Budget and Economic Policy for 2025 to Parliament. The key macroeconomic projections in the Budget included: i) Fiscal deficit (cash) of -4.1%;

End-of-period inflation of 11.9%; iii. Economic growth of 4.0%; and iv. Gross international reserves of at least 3 months of import cover. The Minister also reported the existence of a substantial amount of Government payment arrears to the tune of GHS67.5 billion (or 5.7% of GDP) and equally substantial indebtedness of several State-Owned Enterprise (SOEs).

The national public debt was reported to stand at GHS726.7 billion (USD49.4 billion) or 61.8% of GDP at the end of 2024, even after benefiting from the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) and the accompanying external debt restructuring. The figures generally point to an economy that is slowly emerging from a crisis, while remaining fragile and vulnerable, as the Minister noted in his presentation.

1 Dr. Kwakye is currently the Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Ghana. Dr Kwakye also worked previously with the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and is an ex- member of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of BoG. The views expressed in this Note are entirely those of the author’s and not of any institution(s) or person(s).

The Bank of Ghana’s primary objective is widely known to be price stability. However, what is probably not so well known is the fact that the Bank is also enjoined to promote stabilisation of the exchange rate and economic growth, among other secondary objectives. In spite of the Bank’s mandated multiple objectives, however, it has limited instruments to achieve them.

Indeed, the Bank’s overriding instrument, the PR, has to be engaged almost exclusively as an economic stabiliser and economic stimulant as the situation demands. This goal-instrument limitation confronting the BoG highlights the importance of collaboration between the Bank and Government so that the latter can also bring on board its arsenal of fiscal instruments to achieve the desired macroeconomic outcomes.

The collaboration should critically entail alignment of monetary policy and fiscal policy so that the burden of economic stabilisation or stimulation as may be required does not disproportionately fall on either of the two policies. Unfortunately, in the past, fiscal policy has been mostly loose amidst fast-growing expenditures and lagging revenues.

The widening expenditure-revenue gaps have exerted marked strain on prices and the exchange rate. Meanwhile, the ever increasing size of recurrent expenditure has consistently squeezed capital expenditure (CAPEX), with a drag on economic growth. In the circumstance, monetary policy has shouldered a disproportionately-high burden of both economic stabilisation and stimulation, a difficult balancing act.

As the MPC meets next week, it will once more be confronted with the difficult decision of where to place the PR with the aim of influencing the economy towards the best inflation and growth outcomes. While it has long been the wish of many economic watchers that interest rates would begin to unravel to elicit lower cost of credit and engender investment and growth, such an outcome is unlikely at the MPC’s next meeting, given the difficult and uncertain economic environment.

The fact is that, on the one hand, economic growth is doing better, pointing to incipient economic recovery. However, on the one hand, inflation remains elevated, while the exchange rate, although exhibiting relative stability lately, remains vulnerable.

The vulnerability of the exchange rate has been heightened by the sharp drop of over 10 percentage points in Treasury Bill rates in the last few weeks, which threatens causing investors to flee in search of foreign exchange as a safer haven. It would be helpful to avoid further precipitous fall in Treasury Bill rates so as to stem their divergence from other money market rates. This should be done through close coordination of Government’s debt management and Bank of Ghana’s liquidity management. Meanwhile, cuts in foreign aid by Western governments and emerging trade wars risk unsettling foreign exchange markets, calling for local vigilance.

My consideration of the several foregoing competing factors leads me to the conclusion that the balance of risks in Ghana currently lies more with inflation than economic growth. I am, therefore, inclined to expect the MPC to go for a hike in the PR by 100 basis points from 27.00% to 28.00%.

This decision should give a clear signal to the markets about the Committee’s commitment to deal decisively with inflation and bring it under control in the foreseeable future. The decision should also help to anchor inflation expectations, while helping to counteract second-round effects generated from the supply and cost drivers of inflation, particularly food, energy and transportation.

It is worth pointing out here that targeting these supply and cost drivers would help ease the pressure on the PR. It is, therefore, encouraging to note that both the Minister and the Governor have signalled their intention to collaborate to achieve optimal outcomes for inflation, interest rates and economic growth.

Demolition of my father’s bus terminal under NPP contributed to the party’s defeat

0

Former Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Sarah Adwoa Safo Former Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Sarah Adwoa Safo

Adwoa Safo, the former Member of Parliament for Dome/Kwabenya, has said that the demolition of a bus terminal belonging to her father’s transport company in Agbogbloshie, Accra, contributed to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 election.

According to the former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, a significant number of her father’s church members, who traditionally delivered substantial votes for the NPP during elections, were affected by the demolition, which effectively led to the collapse of her father’s transport business.

Speaking in an interview with Okay FM, monitored by GhanaWeb, the lawyer and politician expressed her disappointment that her own party, while in government, could be so callous toward her father’s business, despite his support for the party in various ways.

“My father, Apostle Dr. Engineer Kwadwo Safo, had a transport company called Imperial Express, which operated buses traveling across the country and to neighboring countries, including Togo and Benin. The bus terminal was located in Agbogbloshie near the ICGC church. One morning, we woke up to see a bulldozer demolishing the bus terminal. When I called the then Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, he told me that it was an ‘order from above.’ At that time, my own party was in government. They destroyed my father’s business—we could not even take a single piece of paper. We were not given any notice to allow us to remove our belongings from the premises.

Those were the same buses we used to transport voters to various parts of the country to vote for the party during elections. In 2012, a significant number of voters were transported to different destinations across the country to vote for the NPP. The land on which the bus terminal stood belongs to the government and had been rented to us, for which we were making payments. Who is the person above who gave the order for the demolition? What pains me the most is that, up until now, the land has been walled off, and nothing has been done with it.”

Jordan Ayew narrates how Gyan, Essien, Muntari helped him settle in the Black Stars

Black Stars captain, Jordan Ayew Black Stars captain, Jordan Ayew

Black Stars skipper Jordan Ayew has revealed how some former Black Stars players helped him settle into the team when he initially joined.

According to him, there was immense pressure on him when he was first called up to the Black Stars, which made him struggle for some time.

However, some senior players in the team at the time, including Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari, Michael Essien, and his senior brother Andre Dede Ayew, protected him from the pressure.

“When I started with the national team, it wasn’t easy. The pressure was intense. But I was lucky because we had players like Asamoah Gyan, Dede Ayew, Sulley Muntari, and even Essien, who protected me and guided me well.

“That’s why I am where I am today. All the pressure went to them, so I didn’t feel it. I’ll always be grateful and respectful to all my seniors,” he said during an interview with JoySports.

The Leicester City forward urged the young players in the current Black Stars team to learn from him, Thomas Partey, and Mohammed Kudus.

“They need to get used to the pressure. Obviously, it’s not easy now because maybe there’s only me, Thomas Partey, and maybe Kudus who have been in the team for about five years,” he added.

Ayew’s first task as captain is to lead the Black Stars to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after their disastrous performance in the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Looters apprehended as fire continues to burn shops

0

Several shops at the Central Market in Adum have been destroyed Several shops at the Central Market in Adum have been destroyed

Some looters have been apprehended by security personnel at the scene of the devastating fire that has engulfed several shops at the Central Market in Adum.

A National Security operative at the scene to assist the fire personnel made it known.

Addressing the media, he explained that the primary challenge faced by the fire service personnel is their inability to access the area where the fire is burning due to the wooden structures surrounding the building and the looting of items by individuals.

He stated that the fire would have likely been extinguished if there was a clear pathway for the fire service to access the source of the blaze.

“It started around 5 A.M. thereabout, and we arrived there around 5:15. The main problem is how to get access to where the fire started. Had there been a way through, they would have finished their work within 30 minutes. But the people were even disrupting them. Some were looting. We had to go and arrest some of them.

“And the military too came in, and then they even helped us along. So now the fire is towards the Roman hill area, towards phase two of the building, so they are still working on it seriously. The fire is still raging, and there is water in the tenders. But getting to where the fire is our problem right now,” he said.

The raging fire that has engulfed several shops inside the Central Market in Adum, Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region, has not yet been extinguished by the Ghana National Fire Service.

The latest update from the GNFS indicates that efforts are still underway to contain the fire, which has engulfed the topmost part of a three-story commercial building housing electrical shops.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, accompanied by security personnel and REGSEC, visited the scene of the fire to inspect and assess the extent of the damage. Operatives from the National Security have also briefed him.

The blaze continues to cause extensive damage, with estimates indicating losses amounting to hundreds of thousands of cedis.

2025 budget fails to consider geopolitical, global supply chain challenges – Agyinsam

0

Member of Parliament for Hemang Lower Denkyira, Lawrence Agyinsam Member of Parliament for Hemang Lower Denkyira, Lawrence Agyinsam

The Member of Parliament for Hemang Lower Denkyira, Lawrence Agyinsam, has criticised the Mahama-led administration for failing to address geopolitical and global supply chain challenges in the 2025 budget.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament during the debate on the 2025 budget, he argued that the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was significantly affected by external shocks, such as the coronavirus pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

He added that Ghana needs to adapt to the shifting global landscape, where concepts like near-shoring and self-sufficiency are becoming prominent.

“Mr. Speaker, I am saddened by the fact that I’ve heard economists and others discussing the 5.7% GDP we are talking about, alongside the world’s economy growing by 3.2%. Have they asked themselves what the underlying factors are? The underlying factors are two-pronged: the Russia-Ukraine war, which they don’t want to acknowledge, and COVID-19. That is why Europe grew by only 1.7%, and China grew by just 1.6%,” he said.

“This budget does not take into consideration the geopolitics of this world. The world is now a geopolitical battleground. Globalisation is being de-globalised. There is no globalisation happening anymore because the world depended on China, and when COVID came, everyone started focusing on self-sufficiency in their own countries. Therefore, the new buzzwords are near-shoring, offshoring, and onshoring,” he added.

Agyinsam further criticised the 2025 budget for failing to address the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which he believes holds the key to boosting trade and socio-economic development for the country and the continent.

“Near-shoring means that Europe is now looking to bring its manufacturing companies closer, around Poland and Ireland. This budget did not even mention AfCFTA. AfCFTA is the single largest market after the World Trade Organization. This budget did not contemplate or mention anything about AfCFTA, even though we are looking to increase intra-African trade from about 13% to 18%, which would help us trade among ourselves,” he bemoaned.

The Hemang Lower Denkyira MP also pointed out that Ghana’s over-dependence on imported goods is a major factor, contributing to the depreciation of the local currency.

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, presented the 2025 budget to Parliament on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.

The budget presentation was in accordance with Article 179 of the 1992 Constitution and Section 21(3) of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921).

How unemployment in Ghana forced parents of Tottenham’s Kevin Danso to settle in Austria

Austrian defender of Ghanaian descent, Kevin Danso Austrian defender of Ghanaian descent, Kevin Danso

Austrian defender of Ghanaian descent, Kevin Danso, has disclosed that his parents migrated from Ghana to Austria due to lack of job opportunities.

He explained that his father was struggling to find employment which compelled him to travel abroad for greener pastures.

The Tottenham Hotspur defender indicated that both his mother and father were able to find jobs in Austria, which made them settle there and eventually gave birth to him.

In a conversation with Ghanaian musician Black Sherif shared by Tottenham Hotspur’s social media handles, Danso said that his parents groomed him with Ghanaian culture, including speaking the local dialect at home.

“They [parents] came from Ghana to Austria. It was tough in Ghana, looking for job opportunities. I think that at that time in Ghana, it was definitely difficult to find work or things like that.

“So he made the move. He decided to go to Austria, where he found work. I was born in Austria but grew up on Ghanaian culture. Both of my parents are Ghanaians so everything in the house was Ghanaian. We weren’t allowed to speak any language apart from Twi at home,” he narrated.

Danso is a key player for the Austrian national team.
