Franklin Cudjoe slams EC for refusing to expand voter registration venues

0

The founder and president of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has strongly criticized the Electoral Commission (EC) for refusing to expand venues for the ongoing voter registration exercise.

In an interview on Citi TV‘s political talk show, The Big Issue, Cudjoe accused the EC of using a “Machiavellian approach” in its dealings, thereby disenfranchising the majority of Ghanaians.

He also took a swipe at the EC for announcing that it would revise the number of registrants.

“Recently, they came out with some analysis that they are revising the numbers that they thought they were going to register. Why would you want to do something like that? Just allow people to register in many registration centres,” Cudjoe said.

He advised the EC to be pragmatic in its approach, praising the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) Boss, Joseph Whittal, for kicking against the EC’s stance.

However, Cudjoe lambasted the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) for being silent about the attitude of the leadership of the EC.

“I haven’t seen that of the NCCE. The NCCE has shut its mouth and eyes to all the things that are happening in the EC,” he pointed out.

A section of the public has voiced their disapproval of the EC’s choice to limit registration centres to district offices, which are often located inconveniently for many eligible voters.

Both the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and various civil society organizations have called on the EC to expand the registration exercise to more accessible locations.

However, the EC has maintained its stance and proceeded with registration solely at its district offices.

‘I’m not silly’ – Liverpool star admits desire to leave Anfield –

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has confirmed he is prepared to leave Liverpool this summer in search of regular minutes.

Kelleher has been with Liverpool since 2015 but, since breaking into the senior setup in 2019, has operated as cover for Alisson and been restricted to just 47 career appearances as a result.

Last season brought 26 outings as Alisson battled injury and Kelleher confirmed to The Athletic he has no desire to spend another season behind the Brazilian in the pecking order at Anfield.

“It was the first time in my career that I’d had a spell like that and I loved it,” he reflected. “I thrived on it. I’d been waiting for a moment like that. It was a massive opportunity for me to be Liverpool’s No 1 for that long.

“It was my time to show the level I believe I can perform at and the level people at the club think I’m able to play at. I proved that I’m good enough to play in the Premier League – I’m comfortable there. I’ve always had that belief in myself. Proving it to people was satisfying.

“Playing against Man City at home was another big one for me with the rivalry between us. You’re not going to play in a more high-profile game than that in world football and I thought I did really well. You think, ‘Yeah, I’m capable of doing this every week at a high level’. I got the taste for it and I want to do it all the time. My main ambition is to be a No 1.

“It would be great if that happened at Liverpool, but I’m not silly. I know that Ali has been the best goalkeeper in the world for years.

“I’ve had such an amazing time at Liverpool. It’s been a crazy journey for me and one that I’ve absolutely loved. I love the club, I love the fans and I have a great relationship with the players and the staff. Whether it’s here at Liverpool or somewhere else, I do feel the next step for me is to be a No 1.”

Kelleher confirmed he plans to hold talks with incoming manager Arne Slot this summer.

“There will be some discussions over the coming weeks,” he explained. “The club was busy with the manager leaving and appointing a new one. With all the new staff arriving, those talks will happen.”

Liverpool have been tipped to reunite Slot with Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow, who recently admitted his interest in sealing a summer transfer.

Eastern Regional Minister to contest New Juaben North NPP Primaries

0

By Bertha Badu-Agyei, GNA

Koforidua, Dec. 23, GNA – Mr Seth Kwame Acheampong, Eastern Regional Minister has successfully submitted his nomination form to contest the NPP Primaries of the New Juaben North constituency, come January 27, 2024.

The Minister, a former two-time member of Parliament for Mpraeso constituency lost the 3rd re-election bid in the 2020 Primaries to Mr Yaw Opoku Ansah, who subsequently won the seat for the NPP.

President Akufo-Addo appointed Mr Acheampong as the Eastern Regional Minister in 2021 after he lost out on his third parliamentary attempt.

Submitting his nomination, he declared, “People are wondering if I have the right to contest here, I am a true royal of Koforidua-Effiduase and so I have every right to contest to serve my people.”

The New Juaben North constituency is described as a stronghold of the NPP since 1992. Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, held the seat as the MP for four terms and handed over to Nana Adjei Boateng, a former New Juaben MCE and deputy Local Government Minister who has indicated not to contest again after three successful terms.

Mr Acheampong mentioned that if given the nod, he would build on the solid foundation of the two notable predecessors who had left indelible landmarks in the constituency.

The Minister was accompanied by a large crowd of party functionaries and faithful to the constituency office and later addressed them.

Government to borrow GH¢5.980 billion in its latest treasury bills auction

0

The government is set to borrow GH¢5.980 billion in its next treasury bill auction to be held on October 4, 2024.

Last week, the government missed out on its ambitious treasury bills target, by a substantial GH¢2.671 billion.

The sale of the short-term instruments resulted in an undersubscription of 35.9%, was the government managed to sell GH¢4.767 billion (64.1%) out of the GH¢7.438 billion it had targeted.

During the auction on September 27, 2024, and issuance on September 30, 2024, GH¢2.598.70 billion was secured for the 91-day bill.

However, the government accepted GH¢830.28 million for the 182-day bill and GH¢1.338.43 million for the 365-day bill.

Interest rates were set at 25.64% for the 91-day bill, 26.92% for the 182-day bill, and 28.67% for the 365-day bill.

According to the Bank of Ghana’s results, all bids tendered in last week’s auction were accepted.

However, an Economist at the University of Ghana, Dr. Lord Mensah, has taken a swipe at the government for the manner in which it is borrowing.

According to him, the government is disregarding the treasury bills issuance calendar and borrowing anyhow.

Treasury bills have become the government’s primary source of borrowing since it no longer has access to the international capital market.

On his X page, the economist said: “If you want to know how low the economy has sunk, look at the frequency and the volumes of T-bills issued by the Ghana government. This government has thrown away the treasury bill issue calendar and they’re doing their own thing. Borrowing left and right from the money market.”

I’m surprised at NPRA’s clearance for SSNIT hotels’ sale – Abraham Koomson –

0

The General Secretary of the Ghana Federation of Labour of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Abraham Koomson, has expressed his disbelief over the National Pensions Regulatory Authority’s (NPRA) approval for the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to proceed to in its sale of four hotels to Rock City Hotel.

In an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, July 11, he expressed skepticism and surprise at the news, asserting that SSNIT should not be able to sell the hotels without proper consultation.

“I am not very sure this story is true…I’m surprised. They can’t sell it,” he said.

He mentioned that Organised Labour will meet on Friday to discuss the development.

The Employment Minister, Ignitius Baffuor Awuah on Thursday informed Parliament that the NPRA has cleared SSNIT to proceed with the sale of four hotels to Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotel.

Initially, the NPRA had asked SSNIT to halt the transaction due to public opposition.

However, the Minister explained that the NPRA’s initial directive was to ensure all details of the sale were provided.

“So, as I Minister, I can tell you on authority that NPRA has since indicated that they had seen the processes and they think that SSNIT can go ahead,” he said.

Mr Koomson expressed doubt about the Employment Minister’s briefing to Parliament, since the Minister is not a member of the SSNIT board.

“I doubt him, I doubt it. They can’t go behind us and do what they are doing,” he added.

The General Secretary emphasised that organised labour opposes the sale of SSNIT’s 60% stake in the four hotels to Rock City Hotel, which is owned by Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Food and Agriculture and MP for Abetifi Constituency.

He questioned the financial capacity of Rock City Hotel to handle such a transaction, insisting they cannot afford it and should not be forced into the deal.

North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who blew the whistle on the deal, has questioned the ability of the Food and Agriculture Minister, Bryan Acheampong to transform the fortunes of the SSNIT hotels he seeks to purchase with his company Rock City Hotel Limited.

Mr Ablakwa said the deal is part of what he calls state capture by appointees of the Akufo-Addo government.

According to him, Labadi Beach Hotel, Ridge Royal, and the other hotels are profitable facilities whereas Rock City Hotel Limited has been consistently reporting losses.

Dr. Anamzoya Writes: I disagree with Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh

0

A number of MPs have thrown their weight behind one of the candidates aspiring to lead the New Patriotic Party as a flag bearer in 2024. How important is this move was the questions a host on Metro TV recently asked Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, and in his answer, the Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri Constituency said :

1. “It is important for various/obvious reasons. Don’t forget that the MPs were voted by the grassroots, the polling station executives. So the MPs largely reflect the grassroots’ mandate in terms of who they want to represent in Parliament.

Then he added:

2. “I am telling you that if you have about 80% of the MPs on your side, you have close to 60% of the grassroots on your side.”

These two statements together are wrong, they are fallacies of wrong comparison, wrong analogy and wrong conclusions. We would be doing ourselves and the discerning public disservice if we allow these two statements to go unquestioned.

Regarding the above statements, the 70% of the 1000 delegates who voted for you in December 2020 to go to Parliament, did so for several reasons. Whatever these reasons were, the collective intention of the delegates in Nsawam Adoagyiri was to send you to Parliament to REPRESENT THEM IN PARLIAMENT AS A LAW MAKER AND NOT TO CHOOSE AN NPP FLAG BEARER FOR THEM TO LEAD THE PARTY IN 2024. You could have, and you do have your choice of who leads NPP in 2024 General Elections. But that’s your choice as you, Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh.

And your choice does not, in anyway, reflect the 1000 delegates in your constituency. So please, don’t insult the intelligence of your delegates and other delegates across the country by assuming that what you, and your colleagues MPs want, is what the delegates in your constituency also want.

Let me give you the benefit of the doubt that you could be a grassroots MP and therefore could easily win back your seat. Fair enough. But the candidate you support, may not be a grassroots person. Your good self, and other MPs in your category need to reflect on the following:

1. What could possibly be the implication of my support for a particular aspirant on my own political fortunes in my constituency, especially if the said aspirant has lost touch with the grassroots?

2. Could my grassroot delegates and the general populace vote against me if I publicly follow an aspirant who, compared to other aspirants is not popular with the grassroots? In other words, could there possibly be a skirt and blouse voting?

3. Have I, or any of my fellow MPs conducted any scientific survey to determine what percentage of the grassroots in my constituency support any particular candidate, for which reason I could be guided going forward?

4. Do my grassroot delegates and general supporters who voted me as MP, see my support for a particular aspirant as representing my personal interest, or the interest of the grassroots in my constituency?

As we reflect on the above, let me conclude by reminding us that during the national congress to elect our national officers of NPP, Chairman Samba, the Northern Regional Chairman, had publicly told John Boadu, then General Secretary of the party that he needed not come to campaign in Northern Region.

Chairman Samba publicly assured John Boadu that he would win hands down in the Northern Region. At the end of the contest, the same people who voted Samba to become their Northern Regional Chiarman, voted against his wish for John Boadu to retain his position as General Secretary of NPP.

I conclude with a statement among the Dagomba in Northern Region that states: Saazugu jaambong, sokam tagrila o zugu ni. To wit: A club falling from the skies, everybody protects the head. I urge you, Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh (and other MPs who think same), to protect your head against the falling club from the skies.

Evangelist Mama Pat has made known her displeasure to some people she counted as sisters and friends during her recent teachings at her church.

The recently wedded wife showed her displeasure on how some people she trusted with certain informations concerning her marriage went behind her to pollute and destroy things unbeknownst to her.

According to her, some people are not with the fact that she’s gotten married to Pastor Asiamah, her junior pastor and are poised to see the marriage come to dust but the living God she serves will not make that suffice.

Mama Pat went on to heap praises on her husband for being a good, loving and caring husband who understands her in and out and can also sign a signature.

She added that people wanted her to stay in her previous marriage so that she can die but her God saved her and gave her a second chance to sweetness.

A Daily Guide Report

The 91-year-old African president who keeps defying death rumours

0

Speculation over the wellbeing and whereabouts of Cameroon’s 91-year-old President Paul Biya has become a hot topic across Africa this week.

After attending the China-Africa summit in Beijing in early September, it was perhaps no surprise that he gave the UN General Assembly in New York a miss.

But when he stayed away from this week’s summit of French-speaking countries (La Francophonie) at Viller Cotterêts, north of Paris, the rumour mill went into overdrive, as he had not been seen in public for about a month.

Cameroon’s ambassador in France insisted that Biya was “in good health” and in Geneva – his habitual base when away from home.

Other sources suggested this was because he needed to rest under medical supervision after a heavy diplomatic schedule in July and August.

After all, he is Africa’s oldest head of state and the second longest-serving, narrowly beaten to that record by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema of neighbouring Equatorial Guinea.

Such mundane indications were not enough to still speculative guesswork about Biya in Africa-interested media and political circles.

So finally the government spokesman, René Sadi, issued a formal denial of the rumours, adding that the president would return home “in the next few days”.

And the head of the president’s private office, with him in Geneva, also said he was “in excellent health”.

Cameroon occupies a key strategic location, as the gateway to landlocked Chad and the Central African Republic (CAR).

Apart from struggling to fully suppress jihadist violence around Lake Chad, it also wrestles with a complex and often violent crisis in its English-speaking regions.

In leading the response to these challenges, Biya has brought an unusual personal style that often eschews the front of the stage, without any apparent personal need to engage in diplomatic presenteeism or performative summitry.

He is a habitual non-attendee at many gatherings of African leaders.

Even back home, with his measured speech and cautious tone, Biya has for many years spaced his personal interventions, largely delegating the day-to-day running of the government, and handling of technical dossiers, to a succession of prime ministers.

Unexplained absences from public view have been nothing out of the ordinary for this most enigmatic of presidents.

Rumours that he has died do surface from time to time, largely because of these unannounced disappearances from the scene.

But this low-key style belies the determination with which he contrived his arrival in power in 1982, elbowing aside his patron and predecessor Ahmadou Ahidjo, promising liberalising change before entrenching a hold on the presidency that no subsequent challenger or campaign of protest has managed to shift.

As a wave of multi-party democratising change swept across much of Africa at the beginning of the 1990s, Biya was one of several incumbent leaders to shrewdly adapt, allowing sufficient reform to take the heat out of mass protest while nevertheless firmly keeping control.

Since one narrow election victory back in 1992, he has shrugged off subsequent political challenges, helped perhaps by manipulation of the polls and certainly by the divisions among often tactically inept opponents.

Now, with Biya’s current seven-year term drawing to an end in November 2025, supporters have even been pressing the 91-year-old to stand again.

Critics feel that it is long past time for Cameroon’s national leadership to pass to a younger generation who could tackle national problems and explore opportunities for development and progress with more speed and dynamism.

In 2016 teachers and lawyers in the two mainly English-speaking regions, South-West and North-West, protested over the failure to properly resource English language rights and public services.

If Biya had responded more rapidly and with a more assertively generous and loudly touted reform package, perhaps he could have assuaged discontent early on – and thus averted the eventual slide into violent confrontation between the security forces and armed militants demanding outright secession.

Biya did later bring forward reforms – to meet the grievances of the English-speaking regions and, nationwide, to decentralise power to regional councils.

But sometimes citizens have faced long waits before the regime addresses their concerns – decentralised structures were not set up until many years after the original framework legislation had been passed.

Some Cameroonians are, however, comfortable with Biya’s restrained approach to leadership and his readiness to leave successive prime ministers to handle routine decisions.

They see his role as more symbolic and distant, akin almost to a constitutional monarch.

Certainly, this representational role is a dimension of the presidency with which he has seemed at ease.

On 15 August, for example, he was at Boulouris, on the Côte d’Azur in France, where he gave a detailed 12-minute address at the commemoration of the 1944 Allied landings to liberate southern France from the Nazis – an operation in which many troops from the French African territories took part.

And in fact, despite frequent absences from the Cameroonian capital Yaoundé – usually retreating either to his home village in the forested south or to his preferred international base, Geneva’s Intercontinental Hotel – Biya has continued to take the key sensitive political and strategic decisions.

The main gatekeeper to the heart of power at the Étoudi presidential palace is the Secretary General of the Presidency, Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh.

A power system where Biya, as the head of state, keeps his cards so close to his chest inevitably generates gossip about his own intentions for the 2025 election and about potential successors.

But some of the senior regime figures most frequently tipped, such as Laurent Esso and René Sadi, are by now themselves far from youthful.

Support groups have also appeared to promote a passing of the torch to the president’s elder son Franck Biya, a businessman – although Franck himself has never shown any interest in politics or given any hint of such ambitions.

But in today’s Africa, where disenchantment with the political establishment runs deep, particularly among young urban populations, establishment attempts to secure the continuation of power can carry risks.

In neighbouring Gabon, President Ali Bongo was deposed by the army last year after the regime manipulated the 2023 election to deliver him a further seven-year term despite his fragile state of health.

And when Senegal’s President Macky Sall lined up his Prime Minister Amadou Ba as his successor, he was decisively rebuffed by the voters who opted instead for the young reformist opponent Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

Biya and his inner circle may feel confident of avoiding such scenarios. But that will require a shrewd reading of popular sentiment, especially among youth and the middle-class in big cities such as Yaoundé and Douala.

IGP meets NDC, NPP leadership over recent incendiary comments

0

The Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo-Dampare, on Monday, met with the leadership of the New Patriotic Party and the opposition National Democratic Congress over recent happenings on the political front.

The meeting which was called at the instance of the Inspector-General of Police was necessitated by press statements issued by both parties and subsequently followed by petitions to the Police Service with each party calling on the Police to arrest certain individuals of the other side for some alleged offences.

The NDC petitioned the Police Service to arrest Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong for claiming that the NPP will never hand over power to the NDC.

The NPP after the NDC petition followed up with a similar petition calling on the Police to arrest former President John Mahama over some incendiary comments he had made in the past.

At Monday’s meeting, both parties were briefed on some policing interventions in place, the political parties were also urged to “do their politics and allow the Police to do policing. We, therefore, called on them to support us including by criticising us constructively to do a professional job in line with our constitutional mandate.”

Below is the full statement by the Police

1. The Police this afternoon met with the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the National Police Headquarters in Accra.

2. The meeting which was called at the instance of the Inspector-General of Police was necessitated by press statements issued by the parties and subsequently followed by petitions to the Police Service with each party calling on the Police to arrest certain individuals of the other side for some alleged offences.

3. At the meeting, both parties were given the opportunity to air their grievances. The main issue raised by them was in respect to comments by some political actors from both sides of the divide considered to be inflammatory.

4. The Police also briefed them on two strategic interventions introduced by the Police Administration to handle the election and politically related incidents as part of the police transformation agenda.

5. The Police used the opportunity to provide an update on the status of political violence and related incidents recorded during the recent internal elections of both parties including;

6. The arrest and prosecution of some 14 members of the NPP for disturbances during their constituency election at Enchi and the arrest of 9 out of the 16 wanted individuals for disturbances at the national youth and women organizer polls of the NDC at Cape Coast.

7. An update was also provided on the status of the 2020 General Election-related cases including Techiman South and Odododiodio constituencies and the public will be duly updated on these cases in the course of the week.

8. The first strategic intervention shared with them is the establishment of the Police Election Security Secretariat to work with all political parties and other stakeholders to enhance the management of security for all elections in the country.

9. This is a complete departure from the old order where an election security task force was put together just some months before the general elections.

10. Since its creation over a year ago, the Police Election Security Secretariat has worked with the various political parties in their respective internal elections from the polling station, through the constituency to the national executive elections.

11. The Secretariat is currently working with both parties on their parliamentary and presidential primaries.

12. The second intervention is the setting up of a dedicated legal team to subject all politically related incidents to legal scrutiny to establish whether there are elements of crime or otherwise before any Police action is taken. The Police will therefore not intervene in any situation where there is no criminality involved.

13. This is a paradigm shift from the practice in the past where people were arrested in the heat of the moment for politically related incidents as a result of attempts by politicians on either side to whip up public sentiments against the police thereby creating the impression that the Police supports one side against the other. In such instances when no concrete charges can be levelled against such people they are eventually released thereby creating the impression in the public domain as though the police were manipulated in effecting their arrests.

14. This initiative has been used to analyze all recent cases such as comments made by the Hon. Minister of Food and Agriculture and the Constituency Youth Organiser for the NDC at Suame, among others.

15. At the meeting both parties were also urged that with these policing interventions in place, they should do their politics and allow the Police to do policing. We, therefore, called on them to support us including by criticising us constructively to do a professional job in line with our constitutional mandate.

16. As we commend the leadership of the two political parties for availing themselves and contributing to the success of the meeting, we would like to call on Ghanaians to help us in our effort to build an independent Police service which will serve the greater good of the Ghanaian people and not the interest of any individual or group of people.

17. Once again, we wish to assure the public that we remain committed to ensuring peace, security, law and order in the country at all times including before, during and after all elections in the country.

“Why I wouldn’t leave my husband even if he cheats on me” Yemi Kuti (Video)

0

Nigerian dancer, singer, and media personality, Yeni Kuti has disclosed why she would leave her marriage because of infidelity.

In an interview with media personality, Chude Jideonwo, the daughter of late Fela Kuti stated that she can never leave her husband because of adultery.

Giving reasons, she cited how her late father had 27 wives and her mother didn’t leave her marriage.

She, however, made it known that she isn’t pushing her belief on anyone.

“I won’t leave my husband if he’s cheating. That’s me. You can leave your own husband if he’s cheating; that’s you. Don’t judge me; I’m not judging you.

My father had 27 wives; my mother didn’t go. It’s me who will now come and go because of one girl. It cannot happen”.

This isn’t the first time, Yeni Kuti has made such a declaration.

Why cheating is not a deal breaker for me in marriage” Yeni Kuti reveals

Recall that while speaking on TVC ‘Your View’, Yeni Kuti said that she can never leave her marriage because of cheating.

She made this known as she sided with veteran actress, Patience Ozokwor on infidelity not being a deal breaker in marriage.

However, the only deal breaker for her is when her man cheats with a fellow man. But for cheating with a female, she can let that slide.

Yeni Kuti also referred to how her late father married several women, and yet her mother didn’t leave.

”For me, cheating is not a deal breaker. My father had 27 wives, my mother didn’t go. I am not saying she was happy, but she didn’t leave. My own deal breaker is if I find out my own partner is sleeping with another man. That is my deal breaker. I will run, they wouldn’t even beg me. I will run”.

I tremendously enjoyed reading Professor Atsu Ayee’s Autobiography – Get a copy and read it!

0

Introduction
I am deeply grateful for a sequence of what seemed like accidents, that I now narrate as my way of saying thank you. Kojo Addae-Mensah, my childhood friend from way back in Little Legon, when Professor Mills (the former President) was our football coach, gave me invaluable help in reaching the current Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana. I thank him.

Eventually when we did connect, I found Professor Nana Aba Amfo to be such a delightful and pleasant person. Why so many were unwilling to carry my messages to her, says something about our dysfunctional attitudes to people in high office and nothing at all about her. Indeed so helpful, dynamic, organised and proactive did I find her, that I have adopted her as my friend – no, sister – with or without her consent! And I immediately nicknamed her, “My Funky VC.”

She gave me tremendous help on some projects I am involved with, about which, more on another day. One of these kind acts was to introduce me to Professor Atsu Ayee. I am immeasurably thankful to her as well for this.

What a step-changing and stimulating experience it has been to reconnect with Atsu Ayee. There is no way he could remember me, for when I first met him, he was my father’s post-graduate student, and I was a noisy boy looking for mangoes in Legon. With people like Kojo Addae-Mensah, an even noisier boy then.

A combination of circumstances has led me into many conversations with retired academics from Legon in recent times. To my surprise and amusement, they are always tremendously amazed at the details and minutiae of Legon life I retained and remember with ease. Wondering, somewhat, how such a youngster observed that much all those many years ago.

My memory of Professor Atsu Ayee coming to see my late father may therefore amuse you. I remember that he was slim, even slender; wore large spectacles and was in a blue political suit. He was soft spoken and looked very quiet. Perhaps, I paid much attention to him because my father clearly admired him. From the comments he would pass about his work ethic, I knew this.

It was not easy to earn J.K. Nsarkoh’s praise in academic matters. I tend therefore to remember people he spoke about glowingly. He used to say about Adu Boahen, his secondary school mate, that he was so talented he should have been a scientist and taken Ghanaians to space. There were similar comments about Alexander Kwapong.

Professor Ebenezer Laing had been acting vice-chancellor when Agyei-Barimah, a student of Commonwealth Hall was gunned down and killed by The Ghanaian Gestapo, during Kutu Acheampong’s era. My late father had been the Senior Tutor of Commonwealth Hall at the time and he never stopped praising the leadership of Laing, plus his scholarship.

When he talked about courageous academics, it was always John Hyde and P.A.V. Ansah. How many times, I heard: “This is Legon it has high standards! Try any funny business and John Hyde will shut down the university to defend the rules.” Then the story that would always follow: “Here people do not hide to say what they want, Paul Ansah will drive to your house and tell you off, sit in his car and drive home.”

So when I did meet Atsu Ayee, and he gave me a copy of his autobiography duly autographed, I was immediately expectant. He added: “your father is mentioned on page 23,” and I thought to myself that is a man of detail and precision, he gives sharp guidance. In our ninety minute very highly productive meeting, Professor Atsu Ayee – I do not think he realised this himself – complimented me four times for being punctual. I had arrived for the meeting thirty-five minutes ahead of time. That too said something to me about what the man values.

My meeting and many emails and WhatsApp posts prior had already left me with the impression of a super-organised man, with deep attention to detail and a world class work ethic. The man acknowledges every single message sent to him. I know of no other person in the world that acknowledges every single WhatsApp post – the Telcos must love him.

Reading the book
And what a book it has turned out to be. It is an autobiography with a lesson for everyone. For, Atsu Ayee is a man with humble beginnings, who by dint of hard work, determination and grit, has made it to the very top of his profession as an incontrovertibly world class scholar, researcher and administrator. A true master of his craft. He would say I should have put “God’s grace” first on the list.

The book is bold and unapologetic. He is an honest man, sometimes searingly so. In how many autobiographies does a master of his craft publish weaknesses a 360 degrees feedback evaluation identified? In detailing some events that occurred between him and extended family, I cringed in parts; the raw detail is put out, unvarnished. He takes on the judiciary with ungloved fists, uncovers uncomplimentary politics even in the church, and pulls-no-punches where he discusses governance failures in the private universities system in Ghana.

When he discusses his experiences in South Africa in the University of KwaZulu Natal, he is honest and balanced but does not side-step the difficulties. Having lived in Durban at roughly the same time, I am able to identify with what he says about inter-racial conflict, xenophobia and a needlessly litigious labour environment.

That said, Atsu Ayee is overwhelmingly generous. He acknowledges everyone that has helped and assisted him along the way. He goes into detail in listing the impact others had on him, especially his Professors. This makes the book partly a celebration of others as well.

As a person who grew up in Legon, this book brought so many memories to me of the living and the dead. So many names from childhood. I had forgotten about Professor Sinandurai for example, the South Asian dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, when I was in primary school. Suddenly, this book jolted my memory and there he stands in my minds eye; always in jeans, his turban and his Peugeot!

Many things to think about
I am going to avoid the trap of leaving nothing to the imagination. Buy many copies of the book and give them out to others. Above all, read it, for it is a relatively easy and accessible read. My generation of “Legon kids” must absolutely get it both for their knowledge and as an act of gratitude to our parents.

Atsu Ayee reveals the inner workings of the meritocracy our parents’ generation created at Legon. But he also gives our now adult eyes a few glimpses of the sometimes complex politics of an equally complex human institution like a university.

It seems to me that the University of Ghana comes out well, not so some of the private universities and the accreditation system that allows them to be. Though forthright, bold, decisive, not squeamish, and courageous in making his points and recollections, he is a relatively mellow man, Atsu Ayee.

For, if some of what went wrong in his experiences with a private university in Ghana happened to me, the Founder would have had to kill me, or I will blow the roof off. You make me Rector and then try to by-pass me on important decisions because you are Founder, I will not allow it. Simple. Heaven knows. Those who know know.

In such situations, Atsu Ayee is a turn-the-other-cheek Christian and I am an overturn-the-tables-and-pull-out-the-whip Christian. But by using this illustration he points to some of the reasons why we remain a Robinson Crusoe Society and will remain so unless we radically change mindsets and our culture.

Read him on pages 153 and 154 of the book: “Unfortunately, the values of diligence and integrity are mostly missing from the conduct of government business and individual transactions. People who try to exhibit these sterling values are ostracized and called names. Meanwhile, the values of diligence are key to building professionalism and excellence in the public sector. Even though transparency and accountability are equally important values, they cannot stand alone by themselves without diligence and integrity. The inclination of indolence and lack of integrity must give way to developing a culture of diligence and integrity.”

He gets it. This is the principal reason we have become who we are, a Robinson Crusoe Society. It is the outcome of an Incompetent State, one that gives refuge to too much dead-wood that should not be in the positions they hold in the first place. I have encountered public sector board chairmen that make me ashamed to be a Ghanaian due to their lack of understanding of corporate governance. Yet political expediency places them there.

Atsu Ayee has more fire to spit out: “Diligence and integrity have been sacrificed by the politicization of state institutions through patronage appointments such as Special Advisors and Special Assistants. This has significant adverse implications for the capacity of the public sector, as the due process for recruitment is not followed.”

Then he thunders: “Lack of diligence and integrity has also affected service delivery, the core function of any state. …Recruitment must be based on meritocracy.”

The place of leadership and my concluding remarks
It is fashionable in this era, for Ghanaian politicians to say we over-focus on political leadership when we discuss development. I am sorry, we will continue to first address political leadership. I am not going to go to the security man or the labourer at the Parks and Gardens Department of the government to point out that we are headed down a bogus and dangerous neoliberal road that delivers only mass misery.

There is a reason why when we are all headed to work, ordinary citizens like me must pull to the side of the road because top government officials are blurring sirens and speeding to their offices. Then they get there and want to say we are all equally responsible? Please stop this joke!

I am therefore glad that Professor Atsu Ayee makes this very strong and uncompromising point on page 67 of the book: “…leaders as individuals can make or unmake organisations and states. Accordingly, the failure of most organisations and states is largely attributed to leadership failure.”

He has done a tremendous job in publishing this autobiography. When we finally escape the Robinson Crusoe Society, which if we do not take radical steps now, I will have to revert to calling what well-meaning friends say I should not – a Buffoon State! – it will be great to add one major law to our constitution.

That law should require everyone that becomes a Professor to publish an autobiography. The world loses too much when they do not. Atsu Ayee has set a great example, others must emulate it. Soon.

I end with a prayer. When Deng Xiaoping’s reforms took off in earnest in China in 1980, he was seventy-six. Atsu Ayee is still a young man. Pablo Picasso and Lee Kwan Yew worked till ninety-one years of age. Deng even more. May Atsu live and be allowed to meaningfully contribute to rebuilding society till he is centenarian. God knows, knowledge is the primary productive force and he has lots of it.

Before all that though, buy and read the book and then buy a copy for a friend. That is our way of celebrating merit.

Apraku Finally Files Nominations To Contest NPP Presidential Primary

0

Former Minister of Regional Cooperation and NEPAD, Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku, has finally successfully filed his nominations for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries.

Dr Apraku becomes the fifth flagbearer aspirant to submit his forms, joining Alan Kyerematen, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Boakye Agyarko.

Dr Apraku’s filing was not without challenges, as he initially failed to submit completed nomination forms on Monday, June 19.
As a result, his submission was rescheduled for a later date.

However, he returned hours later with the necessary documents and successfully filed his nominations at the party’s headquarters.

Speaking to journalists after submitting his forms, Dr Apraku explained that there were certain statutes he was not aware of, which required additional documents, including the aspirants’ vision for the party.

He stated, “We didn’t ignore but we just did not know.”
He reassured the public that he had now brought all the required documents and everything was in order.

The party has set Saturday, June 24 as the deadline for submission of nominations, after which vetting and balloting for the Special Congress in August will take place.

With Dr Apraku’s successful filing, all eyes will be on the upcoming primaries as these five aspirants compete for the NPP’s flagbearer position.

Bessa Simons urges bands to record their own songs

0

Veteran highlife musician, Bessa Simons, has advised bands in Ghana to record their own compositions.

According to him, in the past, it was usual practice for bands to also own records apart from doing covers of other people’s songs.

Bessa Simons, a former member of the legendary Osibisa band and currently the leader of the Bessa Band said on Joy FM’s A-Z that by releasing their own songs and promoting them, these bands will be eligible for awards schemes like the Vodafone Ghana Awards.

“You know what the VGMA stands for. They look out for recordings, promotions, you putting yourself out there, making sure you are in the digital space, making sure you do things extra-ordinary that need to be awarded,” he told the host Kwame Dadzie.

As a board member of the Vodafone Ghana Awards (VGMA) and the President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bessa said he was going to propose the idea of creating a category for bands, as mooted by Sita Korley, a member of the Lipstick Queens.

Sita on A-Z suggested that bands be given a special recognition in the Vodafone Ghana Awards even if they don’t have their own songs.

“Because they [the bands] don’t have albums, are they saying they are not going to be recognised at all?

I would suggest that a different criteria be made out for the bands that are performers and not because they are composers and bring out albums,” she said.

She further noted that even with individual artistes that usually get nominated in the scheme, not all of them compose their own songs so it is not a big deal if a band does not have a song of its own.

“For me I would say there should be a criteria for bands that bring out their own albums and those that play as performers and play covers because there are so many events in the country they perform at so at some point they should be recognised,” Sita said.

Some bands in Ghana that have their own records are Kwan Pa, Fra, Santrofi, Nkyinkyim, among others.

Ghanaian Man with 12 Fingers, Both Penis and Vagina Pleads for Help (VIDEO)

0

In a heart-wrenching plea for assistance, a young Ghanaian man with a unique combination of physical conditions – six fingers on each hand, as well as both a penis and a vagina – is seeking medical treatment to alleviate his struggles. His story, shared in an interview with popular Ghanaian disk jockey, DJ Pakorich, has touched the hearts of many Ghanaians, who are now expressing their willingness to support him in any way they can.

The emergence of a video highlighting the man’s situation has sparked significant reactions across social media platforms. He revealed that his abnormalities have made it extremely challenging for him to secure employment, as he is often perceived as an oddity. The constant stigmatization has taken a toll on his mental well-being, leading him to experience moments of despair and contemplate suicide.

The man yearns for a normal life, devoid of the social ostracism he endures daily. Sympathetic Ghanaians on social media have responded with an outpouring of compassion, with many requesting a Mobile Money number to contribute funds towards his pursuit of medical treatment.

The individual in question appears to be affected by two distinct conditions. The first is polydactyly, a relatively common congenital abnormality characterized by the presence of extra fingers or toes. In his case, he has six fingers on each hand, albeit small and improperly developed. The second condition is hermaphroditism, a rare condition wherein an individual possesses both male and female genitalia due to the presence of tissue from both ovaries and testicles.

Various factors could contribute to hermaphroditism, including congenital adrenal hyperplasia, exposure to male hormones during pregnancy, or the presence of hormone-producing tumors in the mother.

The plight of this young Ghanaian man shines a spotlight on the challenges faced by individuals with unique physical conditions and the urgent need for support and understanding from society. By coming together to assist him, Ghanaians have the opportunity to show compassion, foster inclusivity, and help him access the medical care he so desperately requires.

Media Commission condemns UTV invasion by alleged NPP affiliates –

0

The National Media Commission has vehemently condemned the recent invasion of the United Television premises and studios by alleged affiliates of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the evening of Saturday October 7, 2023.

In a statement issued on Sunday October 8, the Commission said it was collaborating with the Ghana Police Service to actively address the situation from escalating further into violence.

“The Commission is concerned about the increasing use of violence as the preferred method for addressing grievances against the media and journalists. Perpetrators of such crimes must realise that violence does not produce better journalism,” the statement signed by the NMC Executive Secretary George Sarpong said.

It further emphasized the importance of upholding journalistic integrity and condemned the resort to violence of any kind against the media.

“Our Constitution provides avenues for individuals feeling aggrieved by media coverage to seek redress through the complaint settlement mechanism of the National Media Commission,” the statement pointed out.

The NMC however highlighted the importance of fostering a peaceful environment for journalism, especially with the 2024 general elections taking place soon.

“As we enter the electioneering process, it is crucial for political actors and all Ghanaians to understand that the Ghana we envision will not be built on the foundation of violent attacks on journalists,” the NMC emphasized.

Background

In a shocking turn of events, alleged thugs affiliated with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) stormed the studios of UTV on Saturday, October 7, 2023, abruptly halting the live broadcast of United Showbiz.

Approximately seven minutes into the show, which was being livestreamed on GhanaWeb, voices of agitation could be heard in the background as host MzGee introduced the program. The evident confusion on the host’s face was followed by an extended break in production before the program was eventually taken off the air.

Numerous reports that emerged after the sudden interruption of the production suggest that the show was disrupted by a group of men who entered the studios with hostile intentions.

According to these reports, the agitated individuals had entered the studio with the apparent aim of confronting Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as A Plus, who is a regular panel member on the show.

Subsequent videos shared on social media depict a chaotic scene within the UTV studio, with several men calling out for A Plus.

“We are waiting for A Plus today… A Plus has to explain to us why he tore our paper from the NPP party. We are here, we are waiting for A Plus. We are protecting our party property,” one of the men is heard shouting in the studio.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has arrested some 16 individuals involved in the invasion of UTV’s studios with investigations into the unfortunate incident commenced.

Ampratwum-Sarpong retains NPP Parliamentary candidacy in Asante Mampong

0

Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong

The Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister and incumbent Member of Parliament for Asante Mampong, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, has been re-elected as the New Patriotic Party (NPP)s Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency in the December elections.

Ampratwum-Sarpong clinched victory with 555 votes in Saturday’s primary, defeating his closest contender, Dennis Kwakwa, who garnered 167 votes.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) initially suspended the primary due to internal dissent, but following the dismissal of an injunction filed by some dissatisfied NPP members, the primary took place.

The Court of Appeal, led by Justice Georgina Mensah-Datsa, rejected the injunction, emphasising the potential for reconciliation among members of the same political group.

Unhappy members had sought legal redress since February 2022, primarily over issues relating to polling station executive elections. With the legal obstacle removed, the NPP affirmed the continuation of the process.

Ampratwum-Sarpong faced off against Dennis Kwakwa, a former Communications Officer of the NPP in the Ashanti Region, in the contest.

The NPP urged delegates to maintain decorum throughout the process, as emphasised by Paul Yandoh, the NPP’s Communications Director in the Ashanti Region.

Dan Botwe must respect autonomy of DACF Administrator

0

Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, has called on the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Dan Kwaku Botwe, to refrain from interfering with the work of the Administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund.

In an interview with Citi News, the Banda MP emphasized that the office of the Administrator is an independent constitutional body, not subject to the control or direction of the Ministry.

According to Ibrahim, the Administrator, Irene Naa Torshie Addo Lartey, is accountable solely to Parliament, not to the Minister for Local Government.

He was responding to reports that Dan Botwe had written to President Akuffo Addo, raising concerns about his perceived exclusion from the allocation of funds from the District Assemblies Common Fund.

Speaking to Citi News, Ahmed Ibrahim asserted that the autonomy of the Administrator’s office must be respected to ensure the equitable distribution of funds to the District Assemblies.

He emphasized that any attempt by the Ministry to interfere with the Administrator’s work could undermine the principles of transparency and accountability in the fund’s allocation process.

The Banda MP urged Minister Dan Botwe to desist from attempting to exert control over the Administrator’s decisions and advocated for greater collaboration between the Ministry and the District Assemblies Common Fund.

He stressed the importance of an inclusive approach to ensure that the allocated funds are channelled effectively to support local development initiatives

“The constitution is clear that the administrator for the district assembly common fund (DACF) does not come under the Minister for local government, it is clear, it is not like the GETFund nor Health Insurance fund because they are created by the act of Parliament but as for the administrator of the DACF, she or he is an article 71 Office Holder.

“The constitution is clear that the administrator is answerable to Parliament, the act 936 is clear and the constitution article 252 is also clear that she is answerable to Parliament, she must write to parliament, it is clear.”

Mahama reiterates commitment to startup support for poultry, baking and other small businesses

John Mahama, NDC's flagbearer John Mahama, NDC’s flagbearer

Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama says he remains unfazed by attempts from the governing New Patriotic Party to downplay his proposal to support startups and create jobs for individuals interested in poultry farming and baking.

The proposal, which forms part of his plans to address the rising unemployment rate in the country, Mahama has pledged to provide incentives such as day-old chicks and ovens to support poultry and baking startups was met with scepticism and mockery by his main opponents, the governing New Patriotic Party (NDC).

Speaking during a mini rally at Adjei Kojo in the Tema West constituency as part of his greater Accra regional campaign tour, John Mahama rubbished the attempt by his opponents to discredit the policy adding that, most multi-million enterprises across the world started small and grew bigger.

“The NPP has gone to do an advert saying I am only talking about small business but they don’t know that everywhere in the world everywhere you will go the advanced countries. It is these small businesses that have developed them to where they have reached now.

“So it is true there are big businesses that are all coming together to form the 24-hour economy but if we don’t support these small businesses to elevate them the country won’t get to anywhere. So we value the small and medium enterprises and we are going to help the business people in the small and medium sector to be able to grow their businesses”, Mr. Mahama stated.

Akufo-Addo knows NDC is winning Election 2024

0

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has suggested that President Nana Akufo-Addo appears to have accepted the likelihood of his New Patriotic Party (NPP) losing the upcoming December 7 elections.

Mahama shared this perspective during a campaign rally in Biakoye, located in the Oti Region on Monday, November 4, as part of his nationwide tour aimed at securing support from the electorate.

According to Mahama, recent statements from President Akufo-Addo indicate a shift in tone, implying that the President is preparing for the possibility of handing over power to the NDC.

During his remarks, Mahama referenced Akufo-Addo’s recent commitment to a peaceful transition, where the President assured Ghanaians that he would hand over power to whoever wins the election.

For Mahama, Akufo-Addo’s pledge signals more than just a democratic assurance; he views it as an implicit acknowledgement that the ruling NPP may be facing defeat.

“The reason you must vote for the NDC is that we will go after all who have stolen from the public purse. Dr Bawumia cannot hold them accountable. That was why he said he would not hand over power to me.

“But recently, I heard him say he will hand over power to whoever wins. It is just because he knows that the NPP is about to lose the election. He knows that John Dramani Mahama is coming back to the Jubilee House.”

The Real Housewives of Lagos returns for a second season in September on Showmax

0

Real Housewives of Lagos S2

Showmax has announced the return of The Real Housewives of Lagos for a second season, premiering 29 September 2023, with new episodes on Fridays.

The popular reality TV series will build on the success of the first season, whose first episode broke the first-day streaming record on Showmax Nigeria and was the only African title to crack the top 10 most-watched shows on the streaming service in 2022 across not just Nigeria but also Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa.

In addition, the season 1 reunion scooped the award for Best Costume Designer at the prestigious 2023 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs), where the show was also competing for Best Television Series, among other categories.

In the highly anticipated second season, fashion entrepreneur Tania Omotayo and former model and socialite Faith Morey join the original cast, which includes popular Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo; celebrity designer and stylist Toyin Lawani Adebayo; and socialites and business women Chioma Ikokwu, Laura Ikeji-Kanu and Mariam Timmer. These two new faces will bring an extra layer of pizzazz and drama on the show, already known to start conversations on and off social media.

Tania, a renowned fashion entrepreneur, socialite, and former model, is no stranger to the limelight.

Speaking on her reality TV debut, the 32-year-old wife and mother of one said: “I joined The Real Housewives of Lagos because my life is so public but not because I shared anything, simply based on assumptions. This was an opportunity for me to step out of my comfort zone to actually share a bit of my life and challenge myself with something new”.

Faith, a former basketball player turned supermodel, designer and actress, brings her blend of charm and sophistication to the series. On why she decided to be a part of the show, Faith said: “I have always loved reality TV. I am a private person but for some reason, I wanted to experience it. I also wanted to meet fellow hardworking ladies. And of course, the franchise needed a touch of Faith Morey. I was the missing puzzle from the show!”.

The Real Housewives of Lagos gives an exclusive peek into the lives of some of Lagos’ most affluent and influential women, showcasing their extravagant lifestyle while navigating the intricacies of their high-society circles.

Set against the backdrop of the vibrant and cosmopolitan city of Lagos, the show promises a rollercoaster of emotions, friendships, celebrations and, yes, rivalries among the cast. This season will also delve deeper into the lives of the Housewives, revealing their ambitions and personal triumphs.

“The Real Housewives of Lagos shattered records on our platform and dominated conversations on and off social media throughout its run, so it’s really a no-brainer that we’d bring it back,” said the Executive Head: Content and West Africa Channels at MultiChoice, Dr Busola Tejumola.

“Beyond the show’s entertainment value, RHOLagos’ cultural impact can’t be ignored. The feedback from fans shows that in no small way, the show helped put one of Africa’s most important cities and its vibrant culture on the map. We are thrilled to do it all over again and even bigger this season.”

Darey Art-Alade, Chief Creative Director: Livespot 360, the producers of The Real Housewives of Lagos, said, “This season is as real as ‘reality’ gets! In addition to showing some real-life issues faced by women – particularly African women – including balancing family and career, relationships and societal pressures, we also delved into issues around health. But of course, the drama is still served a la carte!”.

The Real Housewives of Lagos was the first West African instalment of the global Real Housewives franchise, which is distributed internationally by NBCUniversal Formats, a part of Universal International Studios, a division of Universal Studio Group.

Season 1 trended on Twitter (now X) at number one in Nigeria and remained on the trend list for the 14-week duration of the show. The show also trended at number one on Twitter in South Africa and featured on the trend list in the United Kingdom.

The Real Housewives of Lagos will stream from 29 September 2023 on Showmax, with new episodes on Fridays. Viewers can join the conversation this season by following Showmax Nigeria on social media and using the hashtag #RHOLagos.

Ambulance Case: Keep quiet and allow the prosecution continue

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to refrain from actions that could undermine the integrity of Ghana’s judicial system.

According to the NPP, Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson should be allowed to go through the legal process in the ongoing ambulance purchase case.

This follows the release of an alleged 16-minute tape containing a conversation between the Attorney General and the third accused in the case, Richard Jakpa.

Addressing the press on Tuesday, May 28, the Director of Legal Affairs for the NPP, Frank Davies, urged the NDC to trust the legal system.

“If it is the firm belief of the NDC and Ato Forson that no loss had occasioned the state from his conduct, then they should remain faithful to our judicial system and cease these malicious orchestrations targeted at bastardising our judicial system to prevent him from standing trial to a conclusion, they should just keep quiet and allow proceedings in court to continue,” he stated.

More Supreme Court Justices constitutional, would ensure effective justice

0

The Attorney-General (AG), Godfred Yeboah Dame, has affirmed that the proposal to augment the number of justices of the Supreme Court from the standard 15, alongside the Chief Justice, is in line with the constitution and would promote efficient justice delivery.

This statement comes in response to the President’s decision to solicit the AG’s counsel on the Chief Justice’s appeal for an increased number of Supreme Court justices.

In a communique to the President, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo emphasised the pressing need for the expansion of the Supreme Court bench, stating, “In view of the realities of the court’s workload and output and the need for the court to appropriately serve the justice needs of the nation.”

She elaborated on the current operational conditions of the Supreme Court of Ghana (SCOG), which functions three days a week in alternating weeks to manage its caseload.

“Two days are used for panel sitting, and one day for the sitting of a single judge. The SCOG therefore sits 12 times a month. On any given day of sitting, the court deals with a minimum of 15 cases and so works on not fewer than 45 matters in a week or approximately 180 matters in a month,” she clarified.

In his letter addressing the Chief Justice’s request, Mr Dame advised President Akufo-Addo that the determination of the number of Supreme Court justices at any given time would be influenced by the administration of justice and the court’s requirements.

“Given the breadth of the multiplicity of jurisdictions of the Supreme Court, the request for the increase in the number of justices serving on the Supreme Court from the conventional fifteen (in addition to the Chief Justice) to twenty, is not only constitutional but would ensure speedy and effective justice, minimise delays and unnecessary expense and conduce to the general efficient administration of the Supreme Court,” he stated.

The AG also highlighted that the execution of the Supreme Court’s functions, in accordance with the constitution, would necessitate differently constituted panels of the Supreme Court convening concurrently.

“Understandably, the permutations in the constitution of the panels, almost simultaneously, could be daunting for effective and efficient work in the face of the limited number of Justices at the Supreme Court, as the Court is incessantly inundated with cases,” he added.

Mr Dame observed that the substantial increase in the backlog of 414 and 595 cases in the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 legal years, during which there were the fewest number of Justices of the Supreme Court for the five-year period under review, provided empirical justification for the need to expand the number of Justices at the Supreme Court to curb the rising backlog of cases.

“The enhancement of the membership of the Supreme Court to twenty, as requested in the brief by Her Ladyship the Chief Justice, is appropriate,” he added.

However, Mr Dame underscored the need to contemplate the fiscal implications on the public purse of any supplementary appointment of Justices to the Supreme Court.

“This is in view of the charge of emoluments payable to Justices of the Supreme Court on the Consolidated Fund,” he added.

He pointed out that the jurisdictions exercised by other Supreme Courts in notable countries in the Common Law tradition are comparatively much narrower, relative to the extensive multiple jurisdictions conferred on the Supreme Court of Ghana.

“Ultimately, a constitutional amendment circumscribing the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court of Ghana, in the long term, is necessary, as stated above. Therefore, unlike in Canada, the United Kingdom, Kenya and South Africa, where the number of justices of the Supreme Court is capped, the highest number of Justices of the Supreme Court of Ghana is not capped in the Constitution or in the Courts Act, 1993 (Act 459).

“This gives discretion to the appointing authority to increase the appointment of Justices to the Supreme Court subject to the demands of the needs of justice,” he added.

My son learned most of the things he said online, I didn’t even know – Mzbel –

0

Following the shocking claims made by Mzbel’s 10-year-old son that ‘There is no God,’ there has been a barrage of criticisms directed at him for making what others consider a ‘blasphemous’ comment.

Mzbel has been subjected to vehement criticisms for her inability to properly groom her child and indoctrinate him with genuine beliefs.

The musician has clarified that she did not teach her son most of the things he said about God during the interview but he learned them online which she did not know until he made the claims in public.

Speaking in an interview with Peace FM and monitored by GhanaWeb, Mzbel stated that she did not teach her son (Okomfo Black) some of the claims he made but he got to know them through online means without her notice.

“He learns most of the things online because when he asks me about certain things I don’t have answers. So I tell him to forget because he is a child and there is no need for him to know about those things. He will then go online to search for them. I didn’t even know he goes online to check those things,” she said.

Mzbel further indicated that she questioned her son about the claims he made in the interview and she was amazed by his response.

She reiterated that she had nothing to do with his astonishing claims he made in the interview.

“After the interview, I asked him about what he knew concerning the claims he made and I was amazed. I don’t intentionally teach him those things. It was once that when he came back from school, he asked me about the local traditions and I told him we practiced them, that’s all.

“We did not talk about religion, whether there is God or not. Before the interview came to the public I asked him why he said ‘there is no God’ and he explained just like he said in the video. So I have not taught him anything,” said Mzbel.

Following the interview, Mzbel reaffirmed her son’s claims and said that they don’t believe in the existence of the Almighty God and urged critics to spend time with God and question Him.

The remark did not sit well with some individuals who then directed their anger and insults at her on social media.

NPP Needs Majority In Parliament – Napo

0

Napo being welcomed to Atwima Mponua on Tuesday

MATTHEW Opoku Prempeh aka ‘Napo’, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stressed the need for the party to win majority of seats in parliament on December 7.

According to him, winning majority seats in the august House would help Dr. Bawumia’s incoming government to push their positive policies to quickly transform the country.

He was speaking when he toured Atwima Mponua Constituency in the Ashanti Region to campaign for votes for the NPP’s Presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Sounding very confident, he stated emphatically that Dr. Bawumia would become the next president of Ghana in 2025, noting that the NPP needs to control parliament.

Napo, who has served as the NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South for 16 years, said without majority in parliament the next NPP administration would struggle.

He, therefore, admonished NPP members and sympathizers to campaign for Dr. Bawumia and all the 275 parliamentary candidates of the NPP to win their various elections.

“As we are seriously campaigning for more votes for Dr. Bawumia, we should not forget that we have 275 parliamentary candidates also contesting on December 7.

“Dr. Bawumia’s government will need the support of the parliamentarians in order for him to push his policies and programmes to accelerate the development of the country.

“I’m therefore, appealing to you to go all out and campaign for our parliamentary candidates because the NPP must control parliament”, Napo stated, attracting wild applause.

The NPP running mate said President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government suffered in pushing its policies after the 2020 polls because the NPP did not perform well in the parliamentary polls.

“We should not allow the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to control parliament and frustrate our incoming government from performing”, Napo warned.

He also sternly cautioned against the notion of voting for Dr. Bawumia and neglecting the NPP parliamentary candidates, which is popularly called ‘skirt and blouse.’

“We are voting massively for Dr. Bawumia and all the 275 NPP parliamentary candidates on December 7. We don’t need any skirt and blouse”, Dr. Opoku Prempeh admonished.

Ghana Gold Coin will not stop cedi depreciation – Prof. Bokpin

0

The Bank of Ghana has introduced the Gold Coin to help stabilise the Cedi The Bank of Ghana has introduced the Gold Coin to help stabilise the Cedi

Professor of Economics, Godfred Bokpin, has said there is no practical way to stop the cedi’s devaluation with the Ghana Gold Coin.

A new investment programme called the Ghana Gold Coin was introduced by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) on Friday with the intention of decreasing dollar hoarding.

The project, which is a component of the domestic gold programme, aims to strengthen the local currency relative to major trading currencies and absorb surplus liquidity from the market.

Within two weeks, commercial banks will sell the coin, which will come in three denominations: one ounce, half an ounce, and quarter an ounce.

The pricing of the coins will be made available on the BoG website, according to a statement made by Governor Dr. Ernest Addison during the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting on Friday, September 27.

Professor Bokpin says that, in spite of its objectives, the effort is not a comprehensive remedy for the depreciation of the cedi.

But Prof Bokpin in a report by citinewsroom.com said “I associate with the intervention from the central bank to the extent that there are very limited alternative avenues right now in the market and therefore any genuine attempt to offer alternatives would be welcomed and the next important question as you rightly asked is whether this is the solution.

“We have been waiting for this all this while and I think it is not too hard to look for that and to conclude that that is not the solution.”

“The reason is as much as we acknowledge that this is an alternative, the market is dry largely also because of confidence and all of that. This is not the solution.”

Professor Bokpin emphasized that prudent economic management was still required in addition to the coin’s adoption.

“I want to believe that it is not packaged as a substitute for managing the economy well because the fundamental thriving factors pushing the cedi to lose its own against the major trading currencies when it comes to fiscal discipline when it comes to enhancing the capacity of the local economy, less import reliance, adding value to the export of your raw commodities, this doesn’t substitute for all of that,” he added.

Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, a politician, business expert, and the founder of Ghana’s Progressive People’s Party (PPP), has urged Ghanaians to cast their ballots carefully in the next elections and to choose candidates who are committed to protecting and expanding local companies.

These statements were given by Dr. Nduom at the opening of a state-of-the-art nursery school block for the Abeyee community in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem municipality, which was funded by Groupe Nduom and the PPP.

With kid-friendly classrooms, safe play areas, and necessary educational resources, the new building is completely furnished to facilitate early childhood education. The ceremony was attended by neighbors, parents, and community leaders.

In his speech, Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom underlined the value of high-quality education in creating a more promising future for the Abeyee people. He asked parents to make sure their kids go to school on a regular basis and make the most of the resources available.

A better future is built on a foundation of high-quality education. I implore the parents in this neighborhood to make your kids’ education a top priority by making sure they attend our school on a regular basis. We can create an opportunity-rich future together,” he continued.

Additionally, Dr. Nduom urged educators to put in their best effort by assuring them that plans were in place to offer rewards as a thank you for their commitment and diligence.

During the ceremony, Dr. Nduom addressed the media and emphasized the significance of choosing leaders who will put the expansion of local companies first. The prosperity of Ghana’s local firms and industries will determine its future, so let’s elect leaders who will strengthen rather than weaken these domestic companies.

Dr. Nduom also emphasized the connection between economic empowerment and education, stressing the importance of facilities like the recently opened nursery block in developing the next generation of innovators and leaders. As an investment in Abeyee’s future, he urged the community to value and care for the institution.

The head teacher of Abeyee Madam Grace Acquah expressed heartfelt gratitude, to Groupe Nduom and the PPP for the school block. “This donation is a blessing for our community, it will provide the children with an environment to grow and learn,” she said.

Ghanaians will vote to erase Akufo-Addo’s horrifying legacy – Vanderpuye

0

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodoo, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has said Ghanaians will choose former President John Mahama in the December elections to wipe away what he describes as the ‘horrifying’ legacy of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

President Akufo-Addo, on the other hand, has urged Ghanaians not to support the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s flagbearer in the upcoming elections.

He argued that, electing the former President would jeopardize the progress achieved during his tenure and endanger the nation’s trajectory.

But, Mr. Vanderpuye said Ghanaians are ready for a change.

He urged President Akufo-Addo to apologise to Ghanaians for his failures, which have resulted in significant hardships in the country.

Mr. Vanderpuye said history will remember President Akufo-Addo as the worst leader the nation has ever had.

“If I were Nana Addo, the best thing I would do as a person is to apologise to the millions of Ghanaians who voted for me and whom I have hugely disappointed. Nana Addo will go into history as the worst President ever in the fourth republic of this country.

“He is the most corrupt President in our history. He is the one who has collapsed our economy. Ghana’s economy today is worse than any time in our history. Is that the legacy he is talking about? Of course, John Mahama will come and correct all.

“The youth of this country are looking for somebody who will come and change the legacy of joblessness, youth unemployment and hopelessness. Ghanaians will vote for a change so that somebody will come to erase this horrifying and very disgraceful legacy from our history,” he stated on Citi News.

Vehicles, houses vandalized in communal clash at Atwima Agogo, Atwima Twedie –

0

Several vehicles, houses, and school properties in Atwima Agogo and Atwima Twedie have been vandalized following a communal clash in the early hours of New Year.

According to eyewitnesses, after a misunderstanding erupted between inhabitants of the two communities on Christmas Eve, some residents of Atwima Agogo allegedly attacked their counterparts from Atwima Twedie on New Year.

This resulted in the destruction of a number of vehicles, houses, and other belongings of Twedie residents.

In retaliation, some residents of Twedie also stormed the Atwima Agogo community, where they vandalized vehicles, houses, and other belongings of the residents of Atwima Agogo and Boaso.

The early intervention of the police helped bring the situation under control.

While residents live in fear, the clash has adversely affected transport services within the vicinity.

During Citi News‘ visit to the area on Monday, transport operators feared using their vehicles to transport people from one community to the other.

The assembly member for Twedie electoral area, Augustine Osei, in a Citi News interview, called for security to be beefed up in the area.

For a driver who had his vehicle vandalized, Michael Kwaku Boateng, he wants the affected persons to be compensated.

Police sources have revealed to Citi News that, so far, no arrests have been made as investigations continue.

Upper West Region receives 106 new equipment to revamp road network

0

The Upper West Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, has lauded President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his visionary leadership in implementing the District Road Improvement Project (DRIP).

During the reception and inauguration of the DRIP equipment for the Upper West Region which was inaugurated recently by the President in Accra, Mr. Yakubu commended the government’s responsiveness to Ghanaians’ needs, particularly in road infrastructure.

“This is a fulfillment of our ‘Year of Roads’ promise,” Mr Yakubu declared, expressing relief that the equipment arrived at a critical time, given the poor condition of roads in the Upper West Region.

He assured the public that the equipment would be utilised effectively and deployed immediately to districts to begin roadwork without delay.

Acting Regional Coordinator of the DRIP, Mr. Venantius Kuundri, stated that JA Plant Pool, a sister company of the Jospong Group of Companies, would monitor and maintain the equipment across Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

In collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and local assemblies, strict maintenance protocols would be adhered to, ensuring equipment longevity. Spare parts would be stocked regionally to address issues promptly, he stressed.

The Upper West Region, comprising 11 municipal and district assemblies, received 106 pieces of equipment under the DRIP initiative, including tipper trucks, motor graders, low beds, pick-ups, concrete mixers, backhoes, rollers, graders, wheel loaders, and water tankers, aimed at improving road construction and infrastructure in the region.

Politicians who stoke tribal, religious sentiments have no message – President Akufo-Addo

0

By Stephen Asante

Accra, Nov. 16, GNA – President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians to be wary of politicians whose sole aim is to incite tribal and religious sentiments.

Those politicians, he said, had nothing good to offer the nation, especially in the bid to strengthen multiparty democracy, diversity, peace and unity of purpose.

“My advice to the electorate is that they reject such people as we get close to the 2024 General Election.”

President Nana Akufo-Addo, addressing the chiefs and people of Bantama, in Kumasi, at the inauguration of an e-library project, said the people should be circumspect about their choice of leaders for the nation.

“What matters most is that we give the nod to leaders whose competency, track record and integrity cannot be doubted.

“In fact, we cannot entrust the destiny of the nation into the hands of incompetent leaders to the detriment of our sustainable growth,” he noted.

President Nana Akufo-Addo described next year’s presidential and parliamentary elections as critical as it would determine the direction of the nation in her development agenda.

On the election of Vice-President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), he said the move was appropriate given his experience, expertise and track record.

The presidential candidate-elect, he said, was a man of substance and also honest – a man who could be trusted to successfully spearhead the affairs of the nation.

The NPP had demonstrated commitment to Ghana’s development and growth over the years, therefore, the electorate should retain the Party in next year’s polls to ensure progress, the President appealed.

He praised the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bantama and Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Francis Asenso-Boakye, for the construction of the e-library project.

While asking the people to own the project, he underscored the need for them to also give the MP another mandate in next year’s elections to enable him to promote their welfare and wellbeing.

Mr. Asenso-Boakye said the project was indicative of the government’s vision of improving the standard of education for the benefit of the Ghanaian youth.

Corporate finance expert and Senior Partner at Ishmael Yamson and Associates, Michael Harry Yamson, has accused the government of misinforming bondholders on the terms and conditions for the new bonds arrangements.

According to him, the state’s proposed arrangements on new bonds and its accessibility was not clear enough and therefore, unacceptable.

Government has given a three-day window for bondholders to complete tender processes as part of the efforts to complete a domestic debt exchange programme.

The deadline for signing up for the programme expired last Tuesday, February 7, but the government, in a late-night press statement, said some of the bondholders faced “technical glitches as they tried to complete the online tender process,” hence the window to enable such persons to complete the process.

“As a result, government is providing bondholders with a window to complete processes for tendering their bonds, in response to the terms of exchange as amended pursuant to the 2nd Amended and Restated Exchange Memorandum. This window ends on Friday, 10th February 2023 at 4:00 p.m. (GMT),” the Finance Ministry announced in a statement signed by Ken Ofori-Atta.

However in an interview on an Accra based FM Station, Mr Yamson, who is the Chief Operating Officer for Ishmael Yamson and Associates, described as unfortunate how the government has failed to bring clarity on the new bonds.

“Members of Parliament rose to their feet and said ‘we don’t know what the Minister is doing,’ these are Members of Parliament. So if they don’t know, you don’t and I don’t know what we are walking into.

“The Minister and the government are telling us to wear a blind fold, we are not blind but we should wear a blind fold and just follow. That is not acceptable, it is just not acceptable. And in any case you issue an instrument and the worthiness of the instrument is based on the entity behind the instrument. Not the instrument itself per se,” Mr. Yamson who doubles as a member of Individual Bondholders stated.

He continued: “So the entity behind the new bond is one that allows all manner of loopholes. It is one that is unable to tame corruption. Why on earth will you want to enter into a new business with that entity and take its guarantees?  And it gives you a legal promise that by the way if I should mess up you cannot take me on in any way. Will you do it?”

Tears Flow For ASI Mandela

0

Family members and colleague Immigration Officers shed tears for a young officer as his casket was moved away by a burial party in a regimental fashion at Madina, Accra last Saturday.

ASI Appiah Yeboah James Mandela passed on to eternity on November 20, 2023 after a brief illness.

He was the parade adjutant of the intake 17 of cadet officers at the Immigration Academy in Assin Fosu in the Central Region.

ASI James Appiah Mandela, nicknamed Adjutant or Tactical, was a man of integrity who showed respect to whoever he met.

Part of the tributes for him read, “he would imitate some colleagues who march in a funny way, leaving everyone laughing. Let’s not forget the highest of morale he had whenever we hit the road for PT. I give my life to Ghana and “Tactfully” were his favourite jama songs. “Tactfully,” as we called him, loved drills. We remember a day at the Academy during fatigue, whilst working and he mentioned that, he was willing to forfeit his position on the editorial board to be part of the graduation parade.

Some of his school mates at Achimota School joined others from Services School at Burma Camp to bid farewell to their former colleague.

Immigration personnel accompanied the vehicle bearing the casket in a show of last respect in a slow march amid the firing of musketry along the street from the park adjacent to the Madina Magistrate Court prior to the final transportation to his final lying place in Achiase, in the Eastern Region.

Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, praised anti-narcotics officers for the seizures.

He urged them to keep up the intensity of their continuous efforts to reduce the supply and demand of drugs, saying that their operational victories and those of their fellow citizens around the nation are greatly appreciated.

Macroeconomic climate drives asset management industry to impressive growth – Bank of Ghana

0

Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr Ernest Addison Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr Ernest Addison

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has reported that the asset management industry (AMI) showed significant resilience in 2023, propelled by a relatively improved macroeconomic environment, which positively impacted the broader securities industry.

According to the central bank’s Financial Stability Report, total assets under management (AUM) in the asset management sector reached GH₵67.5 billion (mark-to-market) and GH₵55 billion when private funds were included by the end of the year.

This marked a notable 38 percent year-on-year growth, reflecting a strong Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 23 percent over the past decade.

The report indicated that this growth surpassed the 10 percent increase recorded in 2022, signaling renewed optimism within the sector.

The BoG detailed that investment funds performed variably across different asset classes.

Pension funds, private wealth funds, and other funds experienced growth, while Collective Investment Schemes (CIS) saw a decline on a mark-to-market basis.

Pension Funds grew by 12 percent, reaching GH₵39 billion (Held to Maturity: GH₵49 billion), making up 71 percent of the industry’s total AUM.

Private Wealth and Other Funds increased by 38 percent to GH₵9.7 billion (Held to Maturity: GH₵10.8 billion), representing 18 percent of the industry’s total assets.

In contrast, Collective Investment Schemes (CIS) recorded a one per cent decline in their net asset value, ending 2023 with GH₵5.2 billion (Held to Maturity: GH₵6.9 billion), constituting 10 percent of the industry’s assets.

The BOG attributed the decline in CIS to several factors, including mark-to-market adjustments and liquidity challenges arising from the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

The Central Bank noted that shifts in interest rates within the money market played a role in driving investors towards government securities, leading to an increased preference for treasuries.

End Dollar- Based Crude Oil Pricing – Dr. Abdul- Hamid

0

Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid

The African Refiners and Distributors Association (ARDA) have asked 54 African countries to end dolarisation of petroleum products.

They asked the African countries to build integrated infrastructure to guarantee energy security that is independent of developed countries, to stabilise their economies.

President of the ARDA, Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, while speaking at the African Energy Week in Cape Town, South Africa, also called for a halt in the export of crude oil from Africa, insisting that the continent is far from meeting its energy security amid rising population.

He argued that by reducing reliance on foreign currencies for energy transactions, African countries could better stabilise their economies, reduce energy import costs, and foster long-term energy security.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid, who doubles as the Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), stressed the need for Africa to refine and use its own resources rather than export raw crude oil only to re-import refined products.

“Nobody puts crude oil in their vehicle or airplane – everything that generates movement and wealth is a refined product. This underlines the need for closer collaboration between Africa’s upstream and downstream sectors to ensure that the continent fully benefits from its natural resources,” he said.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid, proposed a three-tier strategy to promote Africa’s energy independence – policy harmonisation, infrastructure integration and regional currency adoption.

He said Africa’s current fuel specifications differ greatly from one country to another, adding that it is a disparity that creates barriers to regional trade and limits cooperation.

For example, Ghana has a fuel sulfur limit of 50 parts per million (ppm), while several West African neighbours allow levels between 1,500 and 3,000 ppm, making imports challenging and costly.

“Without a harmonised specification across Africa, trade within the continent remains difficult, restricting our ability to collaborate effectively,” Dr. Abdul-Hamid stated.

He also emphasised the importance of collaboration among regulatory bodies, national oil companies, and governments to develop a unified approach to energy production and distribution, adding that efforts like Ghana’s policy requiring companies to use locally refined fuel for oil extraction machinery strengthens domestic refinery output.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid advocated for establishing a regional currency that would mitigate the effects of Africa’s dependence on the US dollar.

“Currently, oil marketers in Ghana require $400 million each month to import refined petroleum products – a demand that constantly pressures the Ghanaian Cedi. Developing a shared currency within regional blocs like West Africa could reduce these pressures and allow us to strengthen our economies,” he suggested.

Secretary General of African Petroleum Producers Organisation (APPO), Omar Farouk Ibrahim, stressed the need to build robust infrastructure within Africa to reduce dependency on foreign markets.

He cautioned that reliance on imported resources leaves African countries vulnerable to international sanctions and supply disruptions.

“We have vast resources on our continent, yet we often depend on imports for energy. Partnering with neighbouring countries to build the necessary infrastructure can secure our energy needs,” Ibrahim said, adding that developing intra-continental infrastructure is crucial to achieving genuine energy security.

Chief Executive of Association of Oil and Gas Marketing Companies, Riverson Oppong, highlighted Africa’s paradox of exporting raw resources while lacking refined products for domestic use.

Oppong pointed out that nearly 90 per cent of Africa’s crude production is exported.

“We have the resources, but we lack access to them because we are locked into a cycle of exporting raw materials and re-importing finished products. This cycle compromises our economic stability and weakens our energy security,” Oppong noted.

He questioned the rationale behind Africa’s continued export of crude oil only to re-import it as refined petrol, a practice he argued weakens local refineries and increases costs.

“During a recent visit to Morocco, I saw a refinery capable of processing 550,000 barrels per day, sitting idle like a ‘white elephant.’ Why are we sending our crude oil to Europe to be refined, only to bring it back to Africa at a premium?” he asked.

Oppong urged African countries to invest in domestic refining capacity and support local refineries to enhance energy self-sufficiency.

Mikel Arteta reveals incredible players he shared Barcelona dorm with –

0

Mikel Arteta has opened up on his experiences coming through the ranks at Barcelona, including sharing a dorm room with several future club legends.

The Arsenal manager enjoyed a fine playing career, making 539 appearances across spells with the Gunners, Everton, Real Sociedad, Rangers, Paris Saint-Germain and Barca’s B team.

Born in San Sebastian in the north of Spain and a childhood friend of Xabi Alonso, Arteta joined Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy as a teenager, moving to their campus in Catalonia.

Ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League dead-rubber fixture away at PSV Eindhoven, Arteta was asked about the difficulties of breaking into a competitive first team, drawing on his experiences with Barcelona.

“It was very difficult. The country was very very different,” Arteta said. “I used to live in a room with bunk beds. There were eight of us. There was Pepe Reina, goalkeeper at Barcelona, Victor Valdes, Andres Iniesta, Thiago Motta, Carles Puyol, myself.

“So there was huge competition within a room already. You know, we were all like little brothers living with each other but the competition was fearless. And that’s probably what it made us after.

“So when you have to compete with other players, you are ready. But it’s always very tough to put them in the environment that is very close to what they find in the future.”

Though Arteta was considered a top prospect and had a respectable career, he never made an appearance for Barcelona’s first team.

He has overseen the development of several promising youngsters at Arsenal during his time as manager, including Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Emile Smith Rowe.
