Mahama Hails Victory Bible Church For 40 Years Of Tranformative Ministry

0

President John Mahama

His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has commended Victory Bible Church International for four decades of steadfast faith, visionary leadership, and transformative impact on Ghana and beyond.

Delivering the President’s message on his behalf, Hon. Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, described the church’s 40-year journey as “a testimony of divine favour, steadfast leadership, and an unrelenting commitment to the Great Commission.”

He recalled that “Forty years ago, in a modest fellowship at Kokomlemle, the seed of this great ministry was planted. From that humble beginning on 2nd June 1985, Victory Bible Church International has grown into a vibrant global family with over 250 branches across four continents — Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.”

Under the inspired leadership of its founder and presiding bishop, The Most Reverend Nii Nabi Apiakai Tackie-Yarboi, the church has faithfully lived out its calling to “raise the foundations of many generations.” This year’s anniversary theme, drawn from Isaiah 58:12, was described by the President as a fitting reflection of the church’s mission and enduring legacy.

President Mahama, through his envoy, lauded the church’s holistic approach to ministry, which combines evangelism, education, community outreach, and social development. He praised the church’s numerous initiatives — including health campaigns, youth empowerment programmes, music and arts ministries, and the renowned Wonderful Jesus Conference — describing Victory Bible Church International as “a light on a hill — a church not hidden, but radiating God’s glory across nations.”

The President further acknowledged the church’s role in nation-building, noting that it has become “a model of excellence and discipline, proving that Ghana can produce churches and leaders who stand shoulder to shoulder with the best across the world.”

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with faith-based organisations in advancing the Reset Agenda and the 24-Hour Economy, emphasising that such national initiatives must rest on strong moral and ethical foundations.

“Without faith, there can be no moral foundation; without integrity, there can be no trust; and without trust, there can be no sustainable development,” the President stated.

“As you celebrate 40 years of grace and growth, may this milestone propel you to even greater heights,” the message concluded. “May the next decade see Victory Bible Church International expand its influence in governance, technology, education, and entrepreneurship — raising a new generation of Ghanaians who will transform every sector of society through faith and innovation.”

Also addressing the congregation, the Chief of Staff, Hon. Julius Debrah, commended Bishop Tackie-Yarboi and the entire church leadership for their exceptional dedication and transformative impact over the years.

He remarked that there is “something truly unique and inspiring about the church — particularly its ability to blend spiritual purpose with social responsibility and innovation.”

Hon. Debrah expressed optimism that the 40th Anniversary celebration would usher in a new era of hope and opportunity for Ghana, saying that the spirit of the event would inspire renewal and national progress. He especially praised Bishop Tackie-Yarboi for his forward-thinking focus on reorienting the mindset of the younger generation towards entrepreneurship, innovation, and self-reliance — a vision he described as “perfectly aligned with Ghana’s drive for sustainable development.”

Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Banda Constituency and Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, together with his Deputy, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for the La Dade-Kotopon Constituency, joined the congregation of Victory Bible Church International for their thanksgiving service.

The grand celebration, held at the Independence Square in Accra, attracted a large and jubilant gathering of worshippers, dignitaries, and international guests, who joined in thanksgiving for the church’s extraordinary journey of faith, growth, and excellence.

As Victory Bible Church International marks its 40th anniversary, it continues to stand as a beacon of transformation, demonstrating how faith, leadership, and purpose can work together to shape a stronger and more prosperous Ghana.

EOCO clears air on reported arrest of Springfield Energy CEO, Kevin Okyere, in Dubai

Springfield Energy CEO, Kevin Okyere

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has clarified that it is currently conducting two active investigations involving Springfield Energy, dismissing reports that it failed to act amid arrest of the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Okyere, in Dubai.

In a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs on behalf of the Executive Director, EOCO described as false the claim by online outlet Novareport that the agency failed to act on a petition alleging fraud involving Springfield Energy.

“Contrary to the claims made by Novareport, EOCO has two active investigations involving Springfield Energy,” the statement said. “The first is a petition against Springfield Energy, and the second is an explosive case between BOST and Springfield Energy. It is the policy directive of the leadership of EOCO that investigations must precede arrest and not the reverse.”

EOCO further stated that the ongoing case between the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) and Springfield Energy remains a priority because of its direct impact on BOST’s finances and the broader Ghanaian economy.

Although EOCO noted that it does not usually comment on active investigations, the office expressed regret that Novareport failed to seek clarification before publishing the “false story.”

“EOCO assures the public that it is committed to investigating and prosecuting economic and organised crimes in Ghana, and we will continue to work diligently to achieve our mandate,” the statement added. “We urge the public to disregard the false claims made by Novareport and to note that EOCO is actively working on not one, but two investigations involving Springfield Energy.”

Background

Reports had earlier circulated that Kevin Okyere was arrested in Dubai after authorities allegedly flagged his passport when he entered the emirate for a meeting with Lukoil. The action was said to be connected to an unresolved arbitration notice and a civil enforcement request related to ongoing fraud allegations.

The allegations, estimated at between $90 million and $94 million, stem from a petition filed in May 2025 by Swiss Oil Company Petraco, which accused GMP Energy, a company associated with Springfield, of diverting proceeds from crude-oil liftings and failing to honour reconciliation obligations.

The dispute reportedly involves over $30 million in petroleum sales where GMP allegedly received full payment from BOST but did not remit the funds to Petraco, as well as a $50 million loan from a $100 million facility meant for an unitisation project that was allegedly not viable.

That is a Lazy Criticism- Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk slams Wayne Rooney

0

Liverpool FC captain Virgil Van Dijk has slammed football legend Wayne Rooney over his criticism towards him as the Reds endure an uneven run in the 2025-2026 season after winning the English Premier League title last season.

On his Wayne Rooney Show on the BBC, the Man United icon stated that Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah’s body language was “not right” amid Liverpool winning just twice in seven games in all competitions.

Speaking after Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa, the Dutch defender hit back at Rooney by tagging the former Everton player’s criticism as a lazy one.

“I didn’t hear him last year. I feel like that comment is just, I would say, a bit of a lazy criticism. Like I said, as well as last year, when things go well, you don’t hear that at all. So it is what it is. [Pundits] have to do their job as well.

“So it is what it is… There’s no hard feelings, by the way. I don’t take it personally whatsoever,” Van Dijk said, according to ESPN.

After picking up a much-needed win over Villa, Liverpool take on Real Madrid on in the UEFA Champions League on November 4 at 20:00 GMT and Manchester City on November 9 at 16:30 GMT.

The report further indicated that two of the NDC MPs on the list currently serve as Ministers of State, raising concerns about the ability of ministers to balance their executive duties with legislative responsibilities.

Here is the list of the top 10 most absentee lawmakers for first session of 2025

NPP tops absentee list

Among the six NPP MPs with the most absences, Joseph Frempong, MP for Nkawkaw, topped the opposition list with 22 days absent.

He was followed by Ernest Yaw Anim, MP for Kumawu, who missed 21 sittings.

Retired military officer Col Kwadwo Damoah (Rtd), representing Jaman South, recorded 19 absences, while Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, MP for Effiduase-Asokore, missed 14 days.

President John Dramani Mahama’s government has paid the emoluments, popularly known as ex-gratia, of Members of Parliament (MPs) of the 8th Parliament for the period 2021 to 2025, snubbing appointees of former President Nana Akufo-Addo who are Article 71 Officers.

BoG to inject $1bn into market for November under FX Intermediation Programme

0

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is set to inject up to $1 billion into the market in November under its revised Foreign Exchange Market Intermediation Programme.

The initiative could see the Central Bank auction about $300 million twice a week in November to licensed commercial banks on a spot basis.

This was contained in a notice to dealers and traders of participating commercial banks seen by JoyBusiness.

The Bank of Ghana stated that subsequent monthly volumes will be determined based on prevailing market conditions.

It added that the Bank remains firmly committed to transparency in its operations and will continue to disclose all relevant information regarding its foreign exchange activities, including FX intermediation and intervention.

October Market Intervention

In October, the Bank of Ghana injected $1.15 billion under the FX Intermediation Programme.

The dollar auction was carried out in what the Central Bank described as a market-neutral manner on a spot basis.

Market watchers believe these interventions contributed significantly to the cedi’s record appreciation in October 2025.

Data from the Bank of Ghana shows that the cedi appreciated against the dollar by 13.9% as of the end of October 2025, and by 34.86% year-to-date.

Average daily trading volume on the interbank market stood at $22 million, contributing to a total monthly interbank volume of $484 million.

Some commercial banks have attributed the cedi’s rally to new forex and monetary policy measures that have improved dollar supply and strengthened enforcement of foreign exchange regulations.

A key factor has been the Bank of Ghana’s decision to revise its forex market interventions — moving from weekly auctions to spot sales for commercial banks. According to the Ghana Association of Banks, this policy shift has enhanced market efficiency.

Background

In October 2025, the Bank of Ghana commenced foreign exchange intermediation under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, with plans to sell up to $1.15 billion each month.

These sales are conducted on a spot basis through twice-weekly, price-competitive auctions open to all licensed banks.

At an engagement with banks, BoG Governor Dr Johnson Asiama explained that there would be no conditions or earmarking for allocations to ensure a level playing field and transparent market access.

“Monthly auction volumes may be adjusted depending on evolving market conditions, but our overarching objective remains clear: to deepen the interbank FX market, enhance price discovery, and smooth volatility,” he said.

The reforms introduced major changes to how the Bank of Ghana intervenes and sells dollars to commercial banks, with interventions now conducted in a market-neutral manner through twice-weekly open auctions accessible to all licensed banks.

A Presidential Staffer and Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, Mustapha Gbande, has revealed that President John Dramani Mahama sends GH¢20,000 every month to each constituency across the country to support the running of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking to a gathering of NDC sympathizers, Gbande, who also serves as the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, said the initiative was part of President Mahama’s efforts to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures and ensure that executives at all levels are adequately resourced.

“Today, as we speak, twenty thousand cedis go to a constituency every month to service the party. And it comes straight from the President,” Gbande stated.

He also disclosed that for the first time in the country’s political history, a significant number of regional and constituency executives of the NDC have been appointed into various government positions.

“For the first time, regional secretaries and field chairmen assumed the responsibility of regional ministers. If you go to the regions, about eight or nine executives of every region have been appointed into government. And if you go to the constituencies, about eight to ten executives of every single constituency have been appointed into some office of government at some level,” he revealed.

Gbande emphasised that this level of inclusion reflects President Mahama’s commitment to rewarding party loyalty and ensuring that the NDC’s grassroots are well represented in governance.

He further noted that the Mahama administration is characterized by what he described as the most inclusive government in Ghana’s history, incorporating not only NDC members but individuals from diverse political and professional backgrounds.

“If you look at the form and shape of governance that has been formed, Ghana has never had the kind of government we have today. The support we got was so diverse that it didn’t just come from NDC people,” he added.

Watch as police rescue 9 military officers allegedly attacked by angry Ahafo Hwidiem youth

A video circulating on social media shows how a police reinforcement team rescued nine officers of the Ghana Armed Forces at Ahafo Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region of Ghana.

In the footage, armed police officers can be seen mounting a guard to protect the military officers, who were under police care at the Hwidiem Police Station amid a huge and agitated crowd.

The video captures five of the officers being escorted into a packed 4×4 vehicle, which had reportedly been vandalized by the angry youth believed to be involved in illegal mining (galamsey).

The vehicle’s rear windscreen was broken as the police attempted to move the officers from the mob.

Some police officers were heard in the video shouting, “Masa, you guys should go, go, watch out!”

The officers, while making their way to the car, were seen being assaulted by members of the crowd before successfully entering the vehicle, which then sped off.

Although the video showed only five officers, reports indicate that there were nine soldiers in total on national duty in Goaso, Ahafo Region.

According to Mynewsgh report, the soldiers had discovered an illegal mining site at Bronikrom near Hwidiem, stormed the location and arrested the site owner.

They also allegedly confiscated two vehicles, mobile phones and two pistols and set fire to some wooden structures and mining equipment belonging to the owner.

Brogya Genfi issues candid warning to GAF personnel on discipline and conduct

The move reportedly angered some residents numbering over 600 who stormed the Hwidiem Police Station, where the soldiers had gone to lodge an official complaint.

The crowd demanded the immediate release of the two seized vehicles and insisted that the police hand over the soldiers for “discipline.”

The irate mob vandalized and smashed the windscreen of a Toyota Hilux pick-up with registration number AD 7191-25, belonging to the NAIMOS team.

Upon learning of the volatile situation at the Hwidiem Police Station, reinforcement from the Regional Police Headquarters was deployed to help calm tensions.

When the reinforcements arrived, seven male and one female military officer were found at the charge office, while two others were being held under police protection at the CID office.

Meanwhile, the mob outside had grown more agitated and was demanding the release of the ignition keys to the seized vehicles.

Realizing that the situation was deteriorating and with a power outage creating additional risk the police, military and the Zongo Chief of Hwidiem, Zarikyi Mohammed Bashiru, agreed to release the vehicle keys to the owners in an effort to defuse the situation.

The Zongo Chief, who had earlier appealed to the mob to remain calm to no avail, offered his personal Toyota Sequoia 4×4 to help transport the soldiers to safety.

However, during the rescue operation, the vehicle was vandalized and its rear windscreen was smashed.

Ghanaians Might Be Shócked to Find Out That Bawumia is Under Serious Investigation That May Escalate

0

Social media debates and online broadcasts have recently ignited controversy in Ghana’s political sphere, with allegations targeting former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and purported political interference involving Yapei-Kusawgu MP John Jinapor. These claims, widely promoted by US-based journalist Kevin Taylor on his With All Due Respect platform, lack concrete evidence but have fueled public speculation amid a politically charged environment.

A post shared on X (formerly Twitter) by @Mr_pee13 suggested that Bawumia was involved in a scandal connected to Hubtel, a major digital payments company in Ghana. The post implied that Bawumia owned the firm and hinted at misconduct intended to tarnish his image and weaken the NPP. Taylor’s broadcast further stoked the controversy, alleging that political operatives sought to “shut down” Hubtel as part of a strategy to undermine Bawumia after the NPP’s election defeat. He also vaguely referenced logistics involving “10,000, 5,000, 20,000 containers,” insinuating a broader destabilization plan. To date, no evidence has linked Bawumia to Hubtel or any attempt to close it. Hubtel CEO Alex Bram remains focused on expanding the company’s digital operations.

Bawumia, during a Takoradi Thank You Tour, acknowledged internal party disputes as a factor in the NPP’s defeat. While some critics, like Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, cite his involvement in the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme as politically significant, there is no verified connection between him and the Hubtel claims.

Taylor’s broadcast also targeted John Jinapor of the NDC, suggesting political forces were applying pressure to weaken his influence, particularly over his criticisms of the NPP’s energy management and transformer supply issues during the Akufo-Addo administration. Jinapor reiterated his concerns about accountability in the energy sector in an interview, though no evidence has surfaced to support claims that he is being actively undermined.

With these allegations continuing to circulate unverified, questions remain about the political motives behind them and the potential impact they may have on Ghana’s political landscape moving forward.

‘Losing Power’ — Pilot’s Final Words Before Fatal Crash Break Hearts Nationwide

0

According to a report by YEN on Sunday, November 2, 2025, moments after takeoff, a calm morning turned into a tragedy that gripped the nation. The pilot’s final words — “Losing power… left engine!” — echoed through the cockpit just seconds before the aircraft plunged back toward the runway. What was thought to be a sudden engine failure has now revealed a deeper and more alarming truth.

According to aviation investigators, the aircraft had just reached “rotation” — the critical moment when the nose lifts off the runway — when the captain sensed a sharp loss of thrust. Despite immediate corrective action, the aircraft failed to gain altitude. The chilling radio transmission was the last communication from the cockpit.

Initial reports blamed a left-engine malfunction. However, further investigations have uncovered that the engine was fully functional. The real culprit was a faulty sensor that sent false readings, triggering an automatic reduction of fuel flow to the engine. Shockingly, maintenance records show that the same sensor had shown warning signs for weeks, but replacement was repeatedly deferred.

A source close to the airline admitted that cost-cutting pressures and scheduling demands often lead to such maintenance delays. Following the crash, the airline grounded its fleet, while aviation authorities launched a comprehensive audit of maintenance practices across all carriers.

Aviation experts say the incident is a stark reminder that even minor technical faults can cascade into fatal disasters when ignored. The pilot’s final moments have since become a symbol of courage and responsibility, his voice replayed in safety briefings and investigations alike — a haunting echo urging reform.

As families mourn and the nation demands accountability, one message rings clear: in aviation, no warning is ever too small to act upon. The story of “Losing Power at Rotation” is not just about tragedy — it’s a lesson written in the skies.

Mahama reportedly endorses Ato Forson, Jinapor as his preferred successors

Ghanaian broadcaster and political commentator, Paul Adom-Otchere, has alleged that President John Dramani Mahama has identified his “anointed successor” within the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking on his Good Evening Ghana show on October 31, 2025, Adom-Otchere alleged that President Mahama is quietly backing Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, to succeed him as the party’s next presidential candidate, with Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor as his potential running mate.

According to Adom-Otchere, intelligence reaching his desk suggests that Mahama has shown particular confidence in the leadership capabilities of both Forson and Jinapor, describing them as the “president’s ticket.”

“This is President Mahama’s ticket, from what we are hearing, Cassiel Forson, the finance minister… He’s been told that if he continues doing what he’s doing until the end of next year, he will be the anointed choice of John Mahama as the next flagbearer of the NDC,” Adom-Otchere stated.

Flagbearer Race: President Mahama’s endorsement could have positive or negative effects – Dankwah

He further revealed that Mahama has reportedly been impressed by Forson’s handling of Ghana’s macroeconomic challenges, including exchange rate stabilization and improvements in key fiscal indicators.

“Ato Forson will tell you that the cedi was 17, it is now 10 it’s a feather in his cap. He will tell you gold reserves have improved and petroleum prices have been stabilized,” he added.

Adom-Otchere also claimed that Mahama’s admiration for John Jinapor extends beyond his role as Energy Minister.

He noted that Jinapor’s long-standing relationship with Mahama dating back to when Jinapor served as the then former president’s spokesperson makes him a trusted political ally.

“John Jinapor, they call him ‘JJ’ in Parliament and he’s the deal. The two of them Ato Forson and Jinapor are the president’s ticket. Forget about everything else,” Adom-Otchere asserted.

The broadcaster described Jinapor as a “Christian from Gonja” with significant parliamentary and ministerial experience, which he said complements Forson’s economic expertise.

If this speculation proves to be true, it would mark a major betrayal of Julius Debrah the current Chief of Staff, who is also widely believed to have John Mahama’s backing in his presidential ambition.

It’s a must win – Hubert Gyau targets Hearts of Oak after brace against Karela

0

Asante Kotoko midfielder Hubert Gyau has sight on Hearts of Oak after netting a staggering brace to inspire a 4-2 victory over Karela United.

The win provided a much-needed boost for the Porcupine Warriors, who are building momentum ahead of a crucial showdown with arch-rivals Hearts of Oak.

Speaking after the match, Gyau noted that beating their rivals is nonnegotiable.

“It’s a must win and we are looking forward to the Accra Hearts of Oak match,” he said, signaling his readiness for the highly anticipated fixture.

Kotoko will travel to face Hearts of Oak on Sunday, November 9, 2025, in what promises to be a fiery clash. Remarkably, both clubs remain unbeaten in the league so far this season.

Hearts, with four wins and four draws, currently sit third on the table with 16 points. Kotoko, despite being in 8th place with 11 points, have three games in hand.

BPS demands arrest, probe of MP over attack on NAIMOS task force

0

The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) has called for the immediate arrest and investigation of Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Hon. Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, and his alleged accomplices over a violent attack on officers from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) at Bronikrom, near Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region.

In a statement issued on Monday, November 3, 2025, the Bureau described the incident — which involved the assault of the NAIMOS Director of Operations and his team — as a “clear obstruction of law enforcement officers in the discharge of their lawful duties,” condemning it in the strongest possible terms.

According to the BPS, the MP allegedly led a group of thugs who attacked the task force during an anti-galamsey operation. The assault reportedly involved the destruction of property and endangered the lives of public officials and military personnel on duty.

The Bureau is demanding:

  1. Immediate arrest and interrogation of Hon. Ebenezer Kwaku Addo and all individuals involved in the attack.

  2. A full-scale investigation by the Ghana Police Service, with support from the Ghana Armed Forces, into the role of the MP and the handling of the incident at the Hwidiem Police Station.

  3. Protective measures for NAIMOS officers, soldiers, and witnesses to ensure their safety and cooperation during investigations.

  4. A Parliamentary inquiry to determine disciplinary or criminal sanctions if the MP is found to have interfered with law enforcement operations.

  5. Strengthening of operational security protocols for all anti-illegal mining task forces.

“The Bureau reiterates that no individual, regardless of political office or influence, is above the law,” the statement said. “Attacks on law enforcement personnel undermine national security, embolden criminal networks, and threaten the fight against illegal mining — a menace destroying Ghana’s water bodies, forests, and livelihoods.”

The call follows reports that police in Hwidiem had to rescue a team of military officers from NAIMOS after they came under attack from a mob during an anti-galamsey operation.

The soldiers had earlier arrested two suspected illegal miners and seized vehicles and weapons at a mining site about 10 meters from the Hwidiem–Goaso Highway.

Several individuals, including a Burkinabe national, were arrested, and the site — which showed signs of severe land degradation and water pollution — was later sealed off.

Calm has since been restored to the area, while the arrested miners remain in custody assisting with investigations.

The Bureau of Public Safety said it would continue to monitor developments closely and could petition the Speaker of Parliament and the Inspector-General of Police to ensure justice and accountability in the matter.

Per a report by 3news on 2nd November 2025, an 18-year-old girl has lost her life after a speeding towing truck rammed into her home in the Kade Adankrono community of the Kwaebibirem Municipality in the Eastern Region.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of an unregistered Rhino truck, who was allegedly racing with a Lexus vehicle, lost control of the steering wheel and veered off the road. The truck tore through a goat coop before crashing into the house where the young victim was located.

Residents described the scene as horrifying, with debris strewn across the area and family members in deep grief.

“We were preparing for the funeral when we heard a vehicle from the Pankese direction lost control and veered into this compound and crushed the young lady,” a relative recounted. “One other younger person was under the car. The medical personnel at St. Dominic Hospital, Akwatia, gave the younger child who survived first aid and have asked that we return on Monday.”

Another distraught family member recalled the victim’s final moments. “The deceased has her child at the hospital. She returned home to gather money to go care for her child. She has just alighted from a pragya to engage her own father for money.” A resident added, “We heard a loud bang and ran out; by the time we got there, she was gone.”

Community members blamed the tragedy on reckless driving, lamenting that the stretch of road has become notorious for speeding and irresponsible behavior by motorists.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the St. Dominic Akwatia Government Hospital for autopsy and preservation.

The driver of the truck reportedly fled the scene shortly after the incident, allegedly fearing mob retaliation. Police officers quickly arrived to restore order and prevent residents from damaging the truck.

Authorities have since launched an investigation into the fatal crash, as residents call for justice and stricter enforcement of traffic laws to avert future tragedies.

Fewer people are seeking asylum in Germany – Official says

The downward trend in people seeking asylum in Germany has continued, with 97,277 first-time applications over the first 10 months of this year, compared with 199,947 in the same period last year, according to the Interior Ministry.

“Our migration turnaround is working. We have considerably reduced Germany’s pull factor and magnetic effect,” Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt told the mass-circulation Bild tabloid in comments published on Sunday.

A ministerial spokesman pointed to increased border checks. Around 18,600 people have been refused entry or sent back at German borders since May, he said.

Upon taking office in May, Dobrindt gave instructions that asylum seekers should be rejected at the border.

Measures taken by Balkan countries could also have played a role in the reduced figures.

A further factor is the changed situation in Syria, previously the source of many asylum seekers, where the regime of Bashar al-Assad was toppled in December.

‘Hypocrisy cloaked in authority’ – A Plus blasts PAC Chair Abena Osei-Asare

The Member of Parliament for Gomoa [constituency], Kwame Asare, has stated that Osei Asare, Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), is unfit to question appointees of the current government.

According to him, Abena Osei Asare, who served as Deputy Minister of Finance under the previous administration, during which most of the financial infractions she is now raising concerns about occurred, should not be the one questioning current government appointees who had no involvement in those issues.

“The Public Accounts Committee of Parliament is currently led by a former deputy of Ken Ofori-Atta, Abena Osei-Asare, who at a point was in charge of revenue. Let me go straight to the point: it lacks both credibility and moral authority for Abena Osei-Asare to question anyone in this country. It doesn’t take law to realize this; it takes the fear of God,” A Plus stated.

“How can any serious nation permit this individual to question appointees of President John Dramani Mahama, who have been in office for less than a year, when she and her superior spent nearly a decade deliberately driving this country toward chaos?” he questioned.

Taking to social media on November 2, 2025, to express his frustration, A Plus accused Abena Osei-Asare of previously defending Rev Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, a former Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), who is currently under investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for alleged corruption and related offences, as well as individuals linked to Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML).

“This same woman, not too long ago, was seen on live television passionately defending the then Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Rev Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, for refusing to disclose his age,” he said.

A Plus continued by highlighting a number of contentious contracts initiated under the government in which Abena Osei-Asare served.

‘What are you telling me?’ – Watch as Abena Osei Asare loses cool on DVLA boss at PAC sitting

“Under the regime she served, Ghana was engulfed in numerous contentious contracts that are now being scrutinized by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

“Take the Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) contract, a multi-billion-cedi agreement between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and SML during Ken Ofori-Atta’s tenure. The OSP is currently investigating the validity of this contract and its financial implications for the nation.

“Then there is the ECG, Beijing Jao Loss Reduction contract, which involved the Electricity Company of Ghana and Beijing Jao, purportedly aimed at minimizing system losses. Investigators are now assessing whether proper procedures were followed and if the nation suffered undue losses,” he lamented.

The outspoken legislator further cited the Health Ministry’s ambulance deal with Service Ghana Auto Limited a contract for ambulance procurement currently under investigation for potential procurement violations and mismanagement of public resources.

“These are not mere whispers; these are active investigations into the very administration where Abena Osei-Asare played a significant role. Thus, what ethical framework allows her to challenge others on accountability?” he questioned.

He continued, “Let’s entertain the notion just for fun that all these investigations are politically motivated. Sure, why not? But even then, one question still hangs in the air like a bad scent: how can a woman who served as deputy to a man involved in the most dubious ‘holy project’ in our history a National Cathedral that not only drained the state’s coffers but practically scammed our heavenly Father now presume to judge others?” he said.

He added, “The deputy of a man who ‘built’ a temple without walls, ‘accounted’ for faith without receipts, and served God Almighty with a ‘tsobo’ budget, now sits in Parliament questioning appointees about accountability. Anokwa!”

A Plus added that Abena Osei-Asare was not merely an observer but an integral part of an administration that oversaw economic decline, reckless borrowing and mismanagement that brought hardships to countless Ghanaians.

“Her demeanor at Committee hearings is not bravery; it is hypocrisy cloaked in authority. It undermines the struggles of every Ghanaian striving to navigate the consequences of her catastrophic leadership.

“Her position in that committee, interrogating state officials live on television, transcends irony it is a national disgrace. By this point, she should be facing the committee’s inquiries herself rather than posing them,” he asserted.

Medical community pushes for national policy on laparoscopy

0

Some medical experts and other stakeholders of the health sector, have called on the government to take urgent steps to incorporate laparoscopic surgery into mainstream health services to make it more accessible and affordable.

Specifically, they have urged the Ministry of Health to develop a comprehensive policy with dedicated funding to support the establishment and operations of laparoscopic centres across all major health facilities in Ghana.

They made the call at the end of project performance review of the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) and Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) laparoscopy project held in Cape Coast.

It was held on the theme: “Strengthening Laparoscopic Surgery in Ghana: Achievements, Challenges and Future Directions.”

Laparoscopy refers to a “minimally invasive” surgical technique that uses small cuts and long, thin instruments with a camera to undertake procedures in the body, reducing pain, recovery time, and complications.

The KOFIH-CCTH laparoscopic project helped to established a laparoscopy centre at CCTH and had trained some 31 staff including surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and biomedical engineers in laparoscopic procedures, making the hospital the only facility in the Central Region with laparoscopic services.

So far, 15 patients have successfully undergone laparoscopic surgeries at the facility under the two-year project, with the hospital acquiring simulation machines to support continuous professional training.

Speaking at a roundtable, the medical experts highlighted the importance of laparoscopy and underscored the need to expand services through a deliberate government intervention.

Dr Agyen Mensah, a former Head of Surgery at the University of Cape Coast Hospital and CCTH, expressed the concern that laparoscopic surgeries, though critical, were sorely expensive and could only be afforded by the affluent in society.

Citing funding as the major challenge, he observed that the cost of establishing a centre including the cost of towers, consumables, and taxes, made laparoscopic surgeries expensive and out of reach of most people.

Experts say it costs about $311,000 to establish a laparoscopic centre.

However, Dr Mensah expressed the belief that with a clear plan and funding from the government, laparoscopic surgery could easily become regular and affordable service across the country, indicating that it was a national policy in many countries.

“To say that laparoscopic surgery is a luxury is unbelievable because in terms of infrastructure we can do it. We say it is expensive to set up, but with about one million dollars, we can supply three or four hospitals,” he said.

“We can afford it if we get our priorities right. We need to get a clear plan, so that it can feature in every teaching hospital and gradually become a part of services for regional hospitals,” he stressed.

Dr Mensah observed with worry that excessive bureaucracies were driving away potential investors in the area, urging authorities to remove the bottlenecks to allow investors to come in and support.

Dr Ralph Armah, the Medical Director of the Tema General Hospital, echoed the sentiments of Dr Mensah and reiterated the need for all stakeholders to find a way of bridging the gap.

He emphasised that as essential as it was, laparoscopic services must not be reserved for a privileged few in the society, calling for more advocacy on the area.

Dr Agnes Achiamaa Anane, Deputy Director of Clinical Care, Central Regional Health Directorate, pictured an enhanced healthcare delivery system if laparoscopic surgery were mainstreamed.

She, however, raised concerns about limited human resources and called for the training of more professionals for the service.

Dr Kang Mee Joo, National Cancer Centre, South Korea, observed that there was a limited knowledge of laparoscopy in Ghana and emphasised the need to create more awareness to revolutionize surgical procedures in the country.

Dr Eric Kofi Ngyedu, the CEO of CCTH, explained that the main goals of the project were to provide high-quality medical services through strengthened laparoscopic surgery capacity and enhance hospital management efficiency.

He indicated that the hospital earlier, had no laparoscopic surgical services with limited human resource capacity in this specialised area, expressing appreciation to KOFIH for the project and the Ministry of Health for its support.

He said the milestone reflected the nation’s ongoing commitments to modernising surgical care and aligning with global trends in minimally invasive procedures.

“Looking ahead, CCTH remains deeply committed to strengthening and expanding laparoscopic services.

“Our vision is to build on this solid foundation, enhance staff capacity further and broaden our equipment base, including the acquisition of advanced anaesthesia machines and other surgical tools,” he said.

Dr Ngyedu noted that their commitment to sustaining laparoscopic services had already opened avenues for new partnerships and collaborations as they strive to make CCTH a centre of excellence for laparoscopic surgery and training in Ghana.

Dr Bomin Yang, Country Director, KOFIH, stated that the project was important to enhance the safety of patients with minimally invasive surgery as they recovered faster after surgery.

He said KOFIH provided financial and technical support to ensure the project was successful to position CCTH as the ultimate health care provider.

Dr Yang disclosed that KOFIH was working with several other institutions in Ghana on other projects including mother and child, biomedical engineering and emergency services to improve the country’s health system.

Mr Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah, the Central Regional Minister,  in a statement read on his behalf, said the introduction of the laparoscopic service represented a quantum leap in health care delivery in Ghana.

He urged CCTH to expand its laparoscopic services and increase awareness on the procedure among the local communities and healthcare providers, indicating that it would stimulate demand for the service.

“I also call on the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to explore opportunities for sustaining and scaling up this initiative,” he added.

Mr Justice Arthur, the Mayor of Cape Coast, acknowledged the role of good health in economic growth and reaffirmed his commitment to prioritising quality health care.

He promised to work with the Members of Parliament in Cape Coast to fix the deplorable road, which led to the laparoscopic centre to provide relief for patients and the medical staff.

Mr Kafui Akpedonu, Project Coordinator, CCTH, touted the success of the project, but lamented the high cost of consumables and the lack of adequate anaesthesia machines as the major challenges.

“We want to say that this centre has come to stay to serve three catchment regions and we want to expand the base to serve other regions and partners who may want to learn from us,” he stated.

NATO ‘will stand with Ukraine’ to get long-lasting peace, senior official tells BBC

0

NATO “will stand with Ukraine up to the day in which we will have them sitting around the table for a long-lasting peace”, a senior official from the military alliance has told the BBC.

Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, chair of NATO’s military committee since January, added that from an operational point of view, he considered the Russia-Ukraine war was bogged down, and “it was almost time to sit and talk because it’s a waste of lives”.

Pointing to the fact that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 had resulted in two more countries joining the Western alliance – Finland and Sweden – Adm Dragone described the war as a strategic failure for Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite recent slow, incremental advances by Russia on the battlefield.

“They will not get a friendly or puppet government like in Belarus. Putin will not succeed.”

Asked if European nations were prepared to keep going with supporting Ukraine’s defence, he said they were. It was beneficial, he believed that they had had something of a wake-up call and were now taking charge of their own defence.

In June, NATO members agreed to raise their defence spending to 5% of GDP by 2035. The move followed repeated urges from US President Donald Trump for members to do so.

On Russia’s recent announcement about long-range, nuclear-powered weapons like the Burevestnik and the Poseidon, the former Italian chief of defence staff and naval aviator played down concerns by NATO, saying that it was a defensive nuclear alliance.

“We are not threatened by them,” he said, “we are just ready to defend our 32 nations and our one billion people. We are a nuclear alliance.”

On the risk of future invasions or attacks, Adm Dragone said if – and he emphasised the conditional here – there was to be anywhere it would likely be the Baltic states: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

But he pointed out that as NATO states, Article 5 would be requested, which considers an attack on one nation to be equivalent to an attack on all, and that NATO would come to their defence.

Asked if that included the US, he replied: “Yes, because they have committed to this and they have underlined that they are still in the business.”

Reuters A Ukrainian gunner fires a self-propelled howitzer on Russian positions in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region. File photo
The Russia-Ukraine war is the biggest and bloodiest armed conflict in Europe since World War Two

Of all NATO defence needs right now, Adm Dragone said air defence was the top priority. Recent incursions by Russian drones into Poland and Romania have prompted the alliance to upgrade its air defences.

Regarding the possibility of activating a notional “drone wall” on NATO’s eastern borders, he said this would be done within months and that “the alliance’s Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk [Virginia] is already working on that”.

“There is a lot of stuff on the market which will fulfil our immediate needs, so we set up a new activity which is Eastern Sentry… integrating all the air defence that we already have on our eastern flank.

“Airspace incursions are pretty frequent; we escort them out, and that’s basically the game,” the admiral said.

Despite no sign that Russia is changing course on the war in Ukraine and despite signs that some members – notably Slovakia and Hungary – are increasingly opposed to supporting Ukraine’s defence, Adm Dragone ended on a positive note.

“The alliance is reliable, it is mature, there is a cohesion which is our centre of gravity.”

“The alliance is stronger than our adversaries, and we will stay with Ukraine up to the day that peace will break out,” he added.

Anlo State marks 63rd Hogbetsotso Festival

0

The Chiefs and People of the Anlo State on Saturday celebrated the 63rd edition of the Hogbetsotso Festival on the theme: “Building Bridges: From a Common History to a Common Destiny.”

The grand durbar, marked with rich cultural displays, attracted thousands from the 36 states of Anlo, as well as government officials, Members of the Council of State, former and current Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, and other dignitaries.

Mr. Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff and special guest, commended the people of Anlo for preserving the authenticity of their cultural heritage.

“I am always happy to visit the Volta Region because I consider it a strong home of our political tradition,” he said.

“Your dance, your performances, and your culture remain authentic and impressive. We truly commend you for keeping the Anlo customs alive,” he added.

He urged the people to continue praying and supporting President John Dramani Mahama in his quest to implement the proposed Volta Economic Zone initiative.

“Just as Dr. Kwame Nkrumah believed in the Akosombo Dam vision despite doubts, President Mahama also believes that developing the riverbanks into agro-industrial zones will create major opportunities for trade, job creation and economic transformation,” Mr. Debrah stated.

Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, Paramount Chief of the Akwamu Traditional Area and Guest of Honour, highlighted the historical bonds between Anlo, Akwamu and Asante.

“Our histories are intertwined—rooted in friendship, shared destiny, and unity of spirit,” he said.

He added: “Though we differ in tongue and custom, we are united in purpose as Ghanaians.”

He called for the safeguarding of indigenous traditions as a tool for development and national cohesion.

Mr. James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister, acknowledged the people for their support and assured them of ongoing efforts to complete key development projects.

He disclosed that several road projects in Anlo, including Alakple Junction–Alakple–Kome and Abor–Atiavi Roads, are currently before the Public Procurement Authority awaiting approval.

“All promises—including the Keta and Blekusu Sea Defence Projects—are progressing steadily, and engineers are already on the ground,” he noted.

Mr. Gunu further assured that the Keta UHAS School of Pharmacy project and the upgrade of Ohawu Agricultural College into an Agricultural University would soon commence.

He also confirmed that the environmental permitting processes required for the Keta Port are near completion, paving the way for construction works to begin.

In his address, Torgbui Sri III, Awomefia of Anlo State, urged citizens—home and abroad—to invest in projects that improve livelihoods and enhance the socio-economic fortunes of Anlo.

“Our unity must reflect in schools built, industries established, farms irrigated, and youth empowered,” he emphasised.

“Let our pride be seen not only in culture and regalia, but in tangible development and transformed lives.”

The Awomefia appealed to government to expedite support for key priority projects including:

Rice and aquaculture development in Afife and Weta; Conversion of Ohawu Agricultural College into a University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences; Establishment of UHAS School of Pharmacy in Keta; Fast-tracking the West Africa Coastal Area (WACA) Project; Completion of the Blekusu Sea Defence and Keta Port Projects; Relocation of the Eastern Naval Base to Keta

He also raised concerns over declining basic education standards in the state and tasked traditional leaders to help restore excellence in learning outcomes.

“Our destiny must be shaped by our own hands,” he said.

He added: “When Anlo stands united, we are stronger than any storm.”

Ashanti NPP MPs condemn Asante Akim South MP’s remarks on “slave descendants”

0

The Ashanti Regional Parliamentary Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned recent comments attributed to Kwaku Asante Boateng, Member of Parliament for Asante Akim South, describing them as divisive and contrary to the principles of the Party.

Boateng is reported to have suggested that the Ashantis historically “used slaves for war” and that the descendants of such people are not entitled to leadership or positions of authority within the NPP.

In a statement dated November 2, 2025, and signed by the Secretary of the Caucus, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Ashanti NPP Parliamentary Caucus described the remarks as deeply offensive and inconsistent with the ideals of unity, equality, and inclusivity that define the New Patriotic Party.

“The Ashanti Regional Caucus completely disassociates itself from this narrative and condemns it in no uncertain terms,” the statement said. “The NPP was founded on the timeless principles of freedom, equality of opportunity, and inclusivity. Ours is a Party that rewards merit, loyalty, and service — not lineage, tribe, or religious identity.”

The Caucus reaffirmed that every member of the Party, regardless of background or origin, has an equal right to aspire to any position within the NPP or national leadership.

“As the bedrock of the NPP, the Ashanti Region rejects any attempt to use history, tribe, or identity to divide our ranks or to question the belonging of any loyal member,” the statement continued. “Such rhetoric is divisive and undermines the unity and cohesion that have been the foundation of our Party’s success.”

The group also urged all members, particularly those in leadership positions, to exercise restraint and decorum in their public statements, stressing the need to uphold the Party’s values of respect and discipline.

“The Ashanti Regional NPP Parliamentary Caucus stands firmly for a united Party and a united Ghana,” the statement concluded.

This follows earlier clarification from the national leadership of the NPP, which also distanced the Party from similar comments attributed to Hon. Asante Boateng, reiterating the Party’s unwavering commitment to national unity, equality, and the inclusion of all Ghanaians in its vision for development.

Powerful 6.3 earthquake kills at least 10 in Afghanistan, scores injured

0

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck near the northern Afghan city of Mazar-e Sharif early on Monday, killing at least 10 people and injuring about 260, authorities said, with the death toll likely to rise.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit at a depth of 28 km (17.4 miles) near Mazar-e Sharif, which has a population of about 523,000.

“A total of 150 people injured and seven martyred have been reported and transferred to health centres as of this morning,” said Samim Joyanda, the spokesperson for the health department in Samangan, a mountainous northern province near Mazar-e Sharif, told Reuters.

The toll was based on hospital reports collected as of Monday morning, he said.

The Afghan Taliban defence ministry said parts of Balkh and Samangan provinces were the most affected, resulting in fatalities among a number of citizens.

Military Rescue and emergency assistance teams reached the area immediately and began operations to rescue people, transport the injured, and assist affected families, it said in a statement.

Health ministry spokesperson Sharfat Zaman said rescue teams were active and the numbers of dead and injured might rise.

“Health teams have arrived in the area, and all nearby hospitals have been put on standby,” Zaman said in a statement.

The USGS issued an orange alert in its PAGER system, which is an automated system that produces information on the impact of earthquakes, and indicated that “significant casualties are likely and the disaster is potentially widespread”.

ACTIVE FAULTS

Afghanistan is particularly vulnerable to quakes as it lies on two active faults that have the potential to rupture and cause extensive damage.

More than 2,200 people were killed and thousands more injured after a quake and strong aftershocks in the southeast of the war-shattered Islamic country at the end of August.

Past events with this alert level have required a regional or national level response, the system’s alert added.

The earthquake destroyed part of the holy shrine of Mazar-i-Sharif, Balkh province spokesperson Haji Zaid said, referring to the Blue Mosque.

Videos of rescue efforts being carried out to save people trapped under rubble and images of fallen debris in buildings were shared on the social media platform X. One video showed rescuers pulling what appeared to be dead bodies from rubble.

Reuters could not immediately verify the footage and the images.

Victor Smith urges American investors to partner Ghana in new era of economic renewal

0

The Ambassador of Ghana to the United States, Victor Smith, has called on American businesses and investors to take advantage of Ghana’s new pro-business environment and expanding investment opportunities.

Speaking at a Business meeting held at McPherson Square, Washington, D.C., Ambassador Smith reaffirmed the commitment of the new administration of President John Dramani Mahama to building a vibrant, inclusive, and investor-friendly economy.

“Ghana is open and ready for business,” Ambassador Smith declared. “We are not asking our friends to observe from afar—we are inviting you to be part of Ghana’s unfolding story of transformation.”

The meeting brought together a cross-section of U.S. business executives, investors, environmental experts and professionals from across sectors, including energy, agriculture, infrastructure, and digital technology.

Economic Renewal and Confidence

Ambassador Smith outlined key achievements under the new administration’s economic recovery agenda, including the elimination of nuisance taxes, stabilisation of the exchange rate, and a significant reduction in inflation.

He noted that S&P Global Ratings had recently upgraded Ghana’s country risk outlook from junk to B- (stable), a move reflecting renewed international confidence in Ghana’s economic management.

“We have restored macroeconomic stability and are sustaining growth through sound, people-centred policies,” he said. “Our focus is to make sure that this growth is felt in the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.”

Transformative 24-Hour Economy Initiative

Highlighting President Mahama’s flagship 24-Hour Economy Initiative, Ambassador Smith described it as “a bold, job-creating plan designed to boost productivity, expand access to employment, and modernise agriculture and industry.”

He explained that the policy was already in motion, with Tema and Takoradi ports operating 24 hours daily to improve trade efficiency, while legal reforms to the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act and the Labour Act are creating a more secure and flexible framework for investors.

Investing in Skills and Innovation

The Ambassador also emphasised Ghana’s investment in youth skills and digital innovation. He cited the One Million Coders Program as a landmark initiative preparing young Ghanaians for global digital jobs and entrepreneurship.

He further pointed to the formalisation of the gold trade through the new Gold Board, as part of the government’s commitment to transparency, responsible resource management, and community reinvestment.

A Call to Partnership

In his closing remarks, Ambassador Smith urged both American investors and Ghana’s diaspora professionals to join hands in building a stronger and more prosperous Ghana.

“Ghana offers not just a market—but a gateway to West Africa,” he said. “With our stability, strategic location, and reform-driven leadership, the time to engage is now.”

“I stand ready to guide partners into Ghana’s growing economy and ensure a seamless, mutually beneficial entry for all.”

‘God revealed my death in a vision when I was six’

Gospel musician Paul Enana Gospel musician Paul Enana

Gospel musician Paul Enana has opened up about a profound spiritual experience that, according to him, reshaped his life’s purpose and deepened his faith in God.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Hitz FM, Enana revealed that he received a divine vision as a child, during which God showed him the period of his death, an encounter that continues to guide his ministry and outlook on life.

Recounting the moment, Enana said the vision occurred when he was six years old and critically ill.

In that moment, he said, God appeared to him and assured him that it was not yet his time to die but rather to live and declare His name to the world.

“God told me I would not die then because I had an assignment to preach His word and declare His Spirit,” Enana shared.

“He gave me long life so I can fulfil that purpose.

“I believe I’ll live into my late 90s before my time comes.”

The revelation, he explained, transformed his understanding of faith and destiny.

Rather than fearing death, Enana said he now focuses on living meaningfully and fulfilling the divine mission entrusted to him.

Born into a family of pastors, Enana noted that while he grew up surrounded by faith, it took years for him to fully comprehend the depth of his spiritual calling.

He added that during a later trip to South Africa, the same vision reappeared to him confirming the divine message he had received as a child.

Enana’s testimony, he said, serves as a reminder of the power of faith, divine purpose and the importance of living with intention.

His experience continues to inspire listeners who seek to strengthen their spiritual connection and trust in God’s timing.

FABAG outlines seven key demands ahead of 2026 budget

0

The Food and Beverages Association of Ghana (FABAG) is demanding a business-friendly 2026 budget that prioritises industrial recovery and restores confidence among manufacturers.

The Association has thus outlined seven key expectations it wants reflected in the upcoming budget including a reduction in nuisance taxes, measures to stabilise the foreign exchange market and inflation as well as policies to support local manufacturing and value addition.

Executive Chairman of FABAG, John Awuni, in a statement said the food and beverage sector continues to face mounting challenges that are eroding investment and threatening jobs..

He made the point that rationalising taxes and ensuring a stable macroeconomic environment are crucial for competitiveness and long-term growth.

FABAG proposes seven key expectations from the 2026 budget:

  1. Reduction in Nuisance Taxes:
FABAG called for a review of multiple levies including the COVID-19 levy, excise duties, the Environmental Excise (Producer Responsibility) tax, container fumigation fees, and other regulatory charges. The Association urged targeted tax reliefs for local producers and SMEs to spur investment and job creation.

  2. Foreign Exchange Stability and Inflation Management:
FABAG emphasised that exchange rate stability and inflation control are essential to keeping production costs predictable and restoring investor confidence.

  3. Support for Local Manufacturing and Value Addition:
The group wants the budget to include clear incentives, affordable credit and energy cost reductions for manufacturers, to boost productivity and exports.

  4. Halt on New Taxes and Levies:
FABAG warned against introducing new taxes in 2026, arguing that the business community is already overburdened. Instead, it urged improved revenue collection efficiency and a wider tax net.

  5. Streamlined Regulation:
The Association called for better coordination among regulatory agencies such as the GRA, FDA, and GSA to eliminate duplication and reduce bureaucratic costs.

  6. Incentives for Sustainable Practices:
FABAG encouraged the introduction of tax rebates or grants for companies adopting eco-friendly packaging and production methods, rather than imposing new environmental taxes.

  7. Promotion of Investment and Job Creation:
The group called for measures to attract local and foreign investment into agro-processing and manufacturing, drive value addition and create decent employment opportunities.

FABAG believes that a pragmatic and growth-oriented budget will stimulate investment, strengthen production capacity while enhancing Ghana’s position as a manufacturing and trade hub in West Africa.

Ghana showing better fiscal discipline in 2025

0

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has commended government for demonstrating stronger fiscal discipline in 2025.

The current administration’s spending controls according to the Fund is a significant improvement over 2024, when higher expenditure and exchange rate depreciation fuelled inflationary pressures.

According to the IMF, the improved fiscal performance has helped narrow the budget deficit, ease pressure on the cedi and reinforce price stability – key factors driving the country’s sharp decline in inflation to single digits for the first time in four years.

Speaking on a yet to be aired interview on the Point of View with Bernard Avle, IMF Resident Representative to Ghana, Dr. Adrian Alter, said the combination of fiscal restraint and tight monetary policy has been crucial in restoring stability.

“When you look at other issues, for instance, fiscal discipline this year is much, much better by the current government than the spending last year,” Dr. Alter noted.

“And that basically helps as well to shrink this gap and to basically address the issue of inflation,” he added.

He explained that the government’s cautious approach to spending, alongside the Bank of Ghana’s firm monetary stance, has yielded results.

Ghana’s inflation fell from about 24% in 2024 to 9.4% in September 2025, with expectations of further moderation as the cedi stabilises.

Dr. Alter observed that last year’s inflation surge was mainly driven by supply shocks and a weak currency, saying, “Last year you had the drought and that impacted massively food prices. The other component was the exchange rate. Exchange rate was depreciating last year while this year is appreciating.”

He credited the central bank’s prudent handling of monetary policy by maintaining a tight stance by cutting the policy rate from 28% to 21.5% to lock in these gains.

“Overall, the BoG has kept its monetary policy consistently tight and basically managed to reduce the inflationary pressures through these prudent policies,” he said.

With Ghana’s fiscal and monetary policies now moving in sync, the IMF representative said the country is “on a stronger macroeconomic footing,” though he stressed that sustaining discipline will be important to keeping inflation expectations well anchored.

Ibrahim Tanko commends Medeama players after hard-fought draw at Hohoe United – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Medeama SC head coach Ibrahim Tanko has commended his players for their fighting spirit after battling to a 1-1 draw against Hohoe United in the Ghana Premier League.

The Yellow and Mauves showed character to claw back a point in Saturday’s Matchday 8 clash at the Hohoe Sports Stadium.

The hosts drew first blood through Francis Odoom, but Abdul Salah’s second-half strike ensured Medeama avoided defeat.

Speaking after the match, Tanko praised his side’s resilience and overall performance, noting that they created enough chances to win.

“I think looking at the performance we put on, I think it’s a deserved [result] if not normally we should have won because we had most of the chances, [but] I think one point away is good.

“Like I said, we had the chances, even our defenders Kamaradini [Mamudu] missed two, but I mean, we are playing away and going 1-0 behind, you have to do more, and I’m happy that they came back, and this kind of performance is good for going forward,” he added.

The stalemate keeps Medeama second in the league standings with 18 points. Tanko’s men will now turn their attention to a crucial top-of-the-table clash against leaders Aduana FC on Matchday 9.

Ghana must restructure economy amid improving fundamentals

0

Economist Professor Ebo Turkson says government must use the 2026 budget to embark on a comprehensive restructuring of the economy amid signs of macroeconomic stability.

He argues, the current momentum to drive economic diversification, particularly as it rolls out the 24-hour economy policy, noting that part of the recent stability stems from favourable commodity prices, including gold, which has strengthened fiscal and external positions.

“We need to structurally transform our economy. Most of what we are seeing now is also coming from the fact that the balance of payment is good. Gold is good, the gold for reserves has helped us a lot but these are based on commodities and you cannot depend on commodities to build the resilience so we need to change the structure of the economy. This is the time the government should prioritise how we can diversify our production base”, he told Citi Business News.

Latest data from the Bank of Ghana indicates that the local currency has appreciated by 37 percent against the US dollar.

Ghana’s consumer price inflation has also dropped into single digits for the first time in four years, extending a nine-month streak of declines.

The year-on-year rate eased to 9.4% in September 2025, down from 11.5% in August.

“The 24 hour economy is on board so if the right infrastructure is built to support that 24-hour economy we are going to see diversification in the production base of the economy and also our export base,” Prof. Ebo Turkson added.

Amid the improving macroeconomic condition, the proposed budget date of November 13 will mark the first full-year budget of the Mahama administration since returning to power in 2025.

It will also be the government’s most significant fiscal policy presentation yet, following ten months of steering the affairs of the economy.

Fans react to Davido video introducing Chioma to French president Emmanuel Macron Fans react to Davido video introducing Chioma to French president Emmanuel Macron

Fans were incredibly proud of their favourite Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, aka Davido, after a video of his meeting with French president Emmanuel Macron surfaced online.

The Awuke crooner had travelled abroad and was seen with Macron exchanging pleasantries in the company of his best friend, Pascal Okechukwu, better known as Cubana Chiefpriest.

In the video, Davido pulled out his phone and made a video call to his wife and mother of his twin children, Chioma, who was in Atlanta.

He had a brief chat with her and introduced her to President Macron.

Davido proudly referred to Chioma as “my wife,” showing his phone to Macron, who greeted her with a warm “hello.”

Chioma also responded with a “hi” to the president as they exchanged pleasantries.

Once Macron finished chatting with Chioma, Davido moved the phone to introduce her to another person, once again saying, “That’s my wife,” as the person greeted Chioma before Davido ended the call.

Fans reacted enthusiastically to Davido’s gesture, impressed by how he proudly showed off his wife to people in positions of authority.

Many recalled a similar moment when Davido introduced Chioma to veteran highlife singer Bright Chimezie.

Some fans even playfully called out Sophia Momodu, taunting her by pointing out what Davido had just done.

Others jokingly mentioned Jada P, Wizkid’s baby mama, suggesting she must be watching the video from a corner.

Awutu Senya East NDC Chairman sparks fresh contest against MP

Stephen Ofosu Agyare, Awutu Senya East Constituency Chairman (NDC) Stephen Ofosu Agyare, Awutu Senya East Constituency Chairman (NDC)

The Awutu Senya East Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Stephen Ofosu Agyare, has once again stirred the political waters by hinting at a possible contest against the sitting Member of Parliament, Miss Philis Naa Koryoo Okunnor, in the party’s upcoming parliamentary primary.

Speaking at a ward meeting in Opeikuma, Chairman Agyare emphasised that his decision stems from a desire to advance the constituency’s development agenda—particularly in areas of job creation and youth empowerment.

However, his declaration has rekindled long-standing tensions within the constituency’s leadership.

Some party loyalists view the move as a personal bid to unseat the incumbent MP, citing the frosty relationship between the two figures.

In the 2023 NDC parliamentary primary, Chairman Agyare notably threw his support behind another female contender, who was ultimately defeated by Naa Koryoo in a decisive victory.

Efforts by senior party figures—including President John Dramani Mahama—to mend relations between the two camps have so far yielded limited results.

While Chairman Agyare’s supporters have applauded his decision as a show of leadership and courage, sections of the grassroots fear the renewed rivalry could deepen divisions and jeopardise the party’s chances in future elections.

Political analysts observing the developments describe the chairman’s move as a potentially destabilising act, warning that internal discord could undermine the NDC’s unity and electoral strength in Awutu Senya East.

Tanzania’s main opposition rejects Hassan’s election win after deadly protests

Tanzania’s main opposition party rejected President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s landslide victory in elections that triggered deadly protests across the East African nation over the exclusion of her key challengers from the fray.

The main opposition party CHADEMA, which was barred from the election for refusing to sign a code of conduct and whose leader Tundu Lissu was arrested for treason in April, said late on Saturday that the results were “completely fabricated”.

It added, “CHADEMA strongly rejects the so-called election results announced by the National Electoral Commission.

These results have no basis in reality, as the truth is that no genuine election took place in Tanzania,” it said on X.

“The countrywide demonstrations are clear proof that citizens did not take part in what is being called an election, and that they reject anyone emerging from this flawed electoral process,” the party added in the statement on its account.

There was no immediate reaction from the government to CHADEMA’s statement.

Some demonstrators tore down banners of Hassan and set ablaze government buildings while police fired tear gas and gunshots, according to witnesses of the protests that erupted during Wednesday’s vote for president and parliament.

CHADEMA said on Friday hundreds were killed in the protests, while the U.N. human rights office said credible reports indicated at least 10 deaths in three cities.

Demonstrators are angry about the electoral commission’s exclusion of Hassan’s two biggest challengers from the race and what human rights groups have said are widespread arrests and abductions of opponents.

The government dismissed the opposition’s death toll as “hugely exaggerated” and has rejected criticism of its human rights record. Reuters could not independently verify casualty figures.

In a speech from the administrative capital Dodoma after being certified as the winner, Hassan said the actions of the protesters were “neither responsible nor patriotic”.

“When it comes to the security of Tanzania, there is no debate – we must use all available security avenues to ensure the country remains safe,” she said.

The authorities have imposed a nationwide curfew since Wednesday and curbed internet access.

Many international flights have been cancelled, and operations disrupted at Dar es Salaam’s port, a hub for fuel imports and exports of metals mined across the region.

Lightwave rejects Akandoh’s claims on e-health contract, data control, and payments

0

Lightwave E-Healthcare Solutions Limited has strongly refuted allegations made by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh concerning the management of Ghana’s National E-Healthcare Programme and the Lightwave Health Information Management System (LHIMS).

In a detailed statement issued on Thursday, October 30, the company described the Minister’s claims—made in Parliament on October 28 and reiterated at the Presidential Accountability Series the following day—as “false and misleading.” It said the remarks risked distorting facts and undermining Ghana’s progress in e-health digitisation.

Data control claims dismissed

Responding to the Minister’s assertion that the electronic medical records of Ghanaians were being “managed from India” without the Ministry’s access, Lightwave said the claim was entirely false.

“The electronic health data of patients generated through the programme remain the exclusive property of the Ministry of Health,” the company stated. “All data is stored in a central repository located at the Ministry’s data centre in Accra—not in India or any foreign jurisdiction.”

According to Lightwave, while the Ministry owns the data, the LHIMS software used to manage it remains the company’s intellectual property, licensed to the government under contract.

On project execution and payments

The company also dismissed the Minister’s claim that it had received 77% of the $100 million contract sum despite completing less than half of the project.

Lightwave argued that the Minister’s figures were misleading because the contract’s 950 health facilities carried different weights and cost allocations. “The successful deployment in just four teaching hospitals, for instance, accounted for 21% of the total contract value,” it explained.

The company maintained that by the time the contract expired on December 31, 2024, it had completed deployments in all teaching and regional hospitals as well as 243 district hospitals—entitling it to about 72% of the contract value.

Delays blamed on Ministry and external factors

Addressing delays in completing the project, Lightwave said the setbacks were largely due to prolonged approval processes, payment delays, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Ministry was required to pay within 36 days of invoicing but in practice took an average of 10 months,” it noted. “These delays created severe financial strain on the project.”

Hardware quality and quantity dispute

Lightwave also rejected claims that it supplied substandard or insufficient equipment, insisting that all hardware met contractual specifications and was subject to inspection and warranty clauses.

On the allegation that the company delivered fewer laptops than required, Lightwave clarified that the total contractual quantity was 9,544 units—not 13,172 as stated by the Minister—and that deliveries to date corresponded to facilities deployed.

Outstanding payments and ongoing operations

The company further contested the Minister’s claim that no money was owed to Lightwave, revealing that it is yet to be paid for eight months of post-contract work.

It also said it continues to support more than 200 facilities that remain active on LHIMS, including the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, and the Eastern Regional Hospital.

Call for resolution

Lightwave urged an end to “uninformed commentary” on the matter and called for a constructive resolution to what it described as an “avoidable impasse.”

“The LHIMS has operated efficiently for nearly nine years. We remain ready to work with the Ministry to complete the remaining installations and ensure continuity of care for Ghanaians,” the company stated.

Family of Ghanaian student who died in Latvia renews call for justice

0

The family of the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student who died under mysterious circumstances in Latvia in June 2025, has renewed calls for justice and a conclusive investigation into his death.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of All Souls’ Day at the Lashibi Funeral Homes and Crematorium on Sunday, November 2, 2025, family spokesperson Jake Yancson Quansah said that although they have received a response from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following their petition, they are still seeking closure.

“Fortunately, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has finally granted us an audience. They wrote to the authorities in Latvia, demanding further investigation into the cause of our child’s death. We are grateful for that, but the family remains in grief because an unresolved murder cannot grant us peace,” he said.

He added that the family expects the same level of urgency that would be applied if the situation were reversed.

“I do not see an instance where a Latvian citizen would be murdered in cold blood, nor do I believe the government of Latvia would go to sleep. That would be an injustice against that country. The same principle should apply to Ghana, and we may have to use this platform to appeal again that justice is all we ask for.”

Some family members indicated that they have also petitioned Parliament and are appealing for the intervention of President John Dramani Mahama to help ensure justice for their loved one.

Another family member, Prince Philip Kelly-Walter, expressed frustration over the lack of progress.

“It is so disheartening to know that up till now, nothing positive has come out of the investigation. We are just asking the government to do everything possible to ensure that justice is served so that we, as family members, can be at peace. It is not fair,” he said.

IMF and BoG finalising new rule-based FX framework

0

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) are finalising a new rule-based and transparent foreign exchange (FX) operations framework to strengthen the country’s external buffers.

This will not only curb exchange rate volatility but also improve the flow of foreign currency within the economy.

It follows concerns by some market watchers that the Central Bank has been overly intervening in the FX market; a trend they say distorts price stability and weakens confidence in Ghana’s flexible exchange rate regime.

The new framework, according to the IMF, will make the operations of BoG more predictable and market-driven, while enhancing transparency in the allocation of foreign exchange.

“We have worked closely with the Central Bank on a revamped foreign exchange operations framework, and this was an important key pillar for the fifth review. Basically, the new framework is rule-based, transparent and objective-oriented,” IMF Resident Representative to Ghana, Dr. Adrian Alter disclosed in a yet to be aired interview on Channel One TV’s Point of View with Bernard Avle.

The overall effect will be to entrench macroeconomic stability and restore confidence in the country’s currency management system.

He explained that the framework is built around three main objectives which include rebuilding external reserves, smoothing excessive exchange rate volatility and improving the management of FX flows through the Bank of Ghana, including those linked to the Gold Board.

“First, to continue to rebuild FX buffers; second, to smoothen volatility of the exchange rate; and third, to intermediate FX flows that go to the BoG, including through Gold Board,” he elaborated.

Dr. Alter said the IMF and BoG are finalising operational details and will seek the approval of the BoG Board before implementation.

He further stressed that the new framework will preserve Ghana’s flexible exchange rate regime but make interventions “more transparent and market neutral,” allowing the interbank market to function efficiently with minimal distortions.

Exporters seek cushion as BoG enforces tough foreign proceeds rule

0

Exporters are asking government to introduce measures to cushion them against potential losses from currency fluctuations as the Bank of Ghana (BoG) begins enforcing its new directive on the repatriation of export proceeds.

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana says while it supports the Central Bank’s push to instil discipline in the foreign exchange market, exporters could face financial risks if exchange rate movements erode the value of their earnings before repatriation.

Under the new framework, exporters are required to return all export earnings through their nominated banks within 120 days of shipment, with only one 60-day extension allowed upon justification.

Exporters who fail to comply risk sanctions, including fines of up to 5,000 penalty units or imprisonment of up to ten years, as part of the BoG’s broader push to tighten oversight in the forex market and safeguard Ghana’s reserves.

In an interview with Citi Business News, the Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association, Samson Asaki Awingobit, said while the Association supports the central bank’s efforts to ensure discipline, it is equally important to stabilise the local currency and support exporters whose projected earnings are affected by exchange rate movements.

“I also want to believe that the Bank of Ghana is working tirelessly to make sure that they have a rate that will be prevailing to both exporters and importers,” he said.

He added that :“What it means is that it will serve the interest of exporters and also serve the interest of importers. Mind you, exporters want to break even; importers want to break even.”

He further suggested that government, through the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), should consider cushioning exporters who incur losses due to shifts in the cedi’s performance.

“I strongly believe that exporters should be given some incentives because they are losing from the rate they were projecting to make from Ghana because of the stability of the cedi,” he added.

Samson Asaki Awingobit emphasised that such support would ensure fairness as both exporters and importers adjust to the BoG’s tightened forex compliance regime.

Ashanti NPP MPs condemn Kwaku Asante Boateng over ‘tribal’ remarks

0

The Ashanti Regional Parliamentary Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong condemnation of comments made by the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim South, Kwaku Asante Boateng, describing his remarks as divisive, offensive and a betrayal of the NPP’s founding values.

In a strongly worded statement signed by Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Secretary of the Caucus, the Ashanti MPs said they were “deeply disturbed” by utterances attributed to Asante Boateng, suggesting that some individuals within the party are descendants of slaves and therefore not entitled to leadership positions.

“These remarks are deeply offensive and run contrary to the spirit of unity, respect and equality that the NPP stands for,” the Caucus stated.

According to the statement, the NPP has always prided itself on merit, loyalty, and service and not tribal or ancestral background and will not tolerate any rhetoric that undermines the party’s cohesion.

“The NPP was built on the principles of freedom, equality of opportunity, and inclusivity. The party rewards hard work and dedication without regard to tribe, lineage, or religion,” the statement emphasised.

Kwaku Asante-Boateng denies making ethnic, religious remarks against Dr Bawumia

The Ashanti NPP Caucus, representing the region widely regarded as the stronghold of the party, warned that attempts to introduce ethnocentric narratives into party politics threaten the very unity that has sustained the NPP over the years.

“Such reckless and unfortunate statements only serve to divide our ranks and weaken the bond that has made the NPP the most formidable political organization in Ghana’s Fourth Republic,” the statement added.

The Caucus urged all members, particularly those in leadership positions, to exercise restraint and decorum in their public utterances.

It further reminded them that mature political traditions act swiftly against comments that inflame ethnic or religious sentiments.

Reaffirming its commitment to national unity and peaceful coexistence, the Ashanti NPP Parliamentary Caucus called on party members to stay focused on strengthening the NPP and contributing to Ghana’s development.

“Our focus must remain on building a stronger NPP and advancing the collective progress of our nation,” the statement concluded.

‘Galamsey fight undermined as top officials are directly involved and profiting’ – Bishop Ansah

0

General Overseer of the Eternal Life Church, Bishop E.O. Ansah General Overseer of the Eternal Life Church, Bishop E.O. Ansah

The General Overseer of the Eternal Life Church, Bishop E.O. Ansah, has asserted that the primary challenge in combating illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, stems from the direct involvement of some of the very officials responsible for fighting the menace.

Bishop Ansah claimed that certain individuals in positions of authority — tasked with addressing the menace that has destroyed water bodies, ravaged forest reserves, and led to significant public health issues — are financially benefiting from the activity and therefore have no intention of bringing it to an end.

He made these remarks on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Eternal Life Church on Sunday, November 2, 2025. Describing galamsey as a complex and formidable challenge, Bishop Ansah warned that the nation would be unable to prevail without decisively pursuing these top officials.

He stated, “Galamsey is something that is a bit dicey because I do subscribe to the assertion that the same power brokers who must stop it most of them are in it, and that is what is making the waters so muddy. Many of these individuals get their money from gold.”

The Bishop argued that the fight against galamsey will not succeed until there is a national consensus that the current activities pose a grave threat to human life, the environment, and the security of the state.

When asked if he supports the declaration of a State of Emergency against illegal mining, he stressed his endorsement, saying:

“I do, so that together we can put a stop to this thing and live in a safe environment.”

Bishop Ansah further commended the current administration’s decision to introduce the Gold Board as a positive measure but ultimately called on authorities to implement comprehensive and rigorous strategies to eliminate all illegal mining operations.

Ghana international Mohammed Kudus Ghana international Mohammed Kudus

Ghana international Mohammed Kudus is proving unstoppable in his debut Premier League season with Tottenham Hotspur, earning plaudits across Europe for his electric form and dazzling footwork.

According to a recent statistical breakdown from European football analysts, Kudus currently boasts the highest successful dribble rate across Europe’s top five leagues, cementing his reputation as one of the continent’s most dangerous attacking talents.

The former Ajax star has completed 32 successful dribbles from 68 attempts, the best ratio among all players in the major leagues.

Kudus, who joined Spurs in the summer, has quickly adapted to life in North London under manager Thomas Frank, operating mainly from the right wing but also showcasing his versatility across the front line.

His ability to glide past defenders and create attacking opportunities has been instrumental to Tottenham’s strong start to the 2025/26 campaign.

The 25-year-old’s combination of flair, balance, and composure in one-on-one situations has drawn comparisons to some of the league’s finest dribblers.

Kudus’ continued rise is encouraging for Ghana ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars will rely heavily on his creativity and goal threat.

With his current trajectory, Kudus is not just Tottenham’s standout performer – he’s becoming one of Europe’s elite.

Kenya landslide death toll rises to 26

The death toll from a landslide in western Kenya’s Rift Valley has risen to 26, a government spokesperson said on Sunday, following heavy rains on Saturday.

Twenty-five people were still missing and 26 others had been rescued after devastating floods in Elgeyo-Marakwet County, government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said in a statement. Most of the rescued people were receiving treatment.

The government has deployed military planes and disaster response specialists to conduct a search and rescue operation, Mwaura added.

Hundreds of people have been killed in recent years in landslides and flooding in Kenya, with scientists saying climate change is causing more intense and frequent extreme weather events.

In the worst incident last year, 61 people were killed in a mudslide and flash floods in central Kenya.

Landslides in the east of neighbouring Uganda have also killed at least 13 people in the last week, according to the Uganda Red Cross.

The greatest crime against humanity and the global Reparatory Fund

0

In his speech at the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly, Thursday, September 25, 2025, President Mahama of Ghana eloquently restated what we all now know as the central theme of the past two centuries: “The slave trade must be recognised as the greatest crime against humanity. More than twelve and a half million Africans were forcibly taken against their will and transported to create wealth for the powerful Western nations.”

President Mahama then made a demand for reparations, a declaration within the frame of the speech his predecessor, President Akuffo-Addo, had made at the UN in 2023: “We must demand reparations for the enslavement of our people and the colonisation of our land that resulted in the theft of natural resources, as well as the looting of artefacts and other items of cultural heritage that have yet to be returned in total. We recognise the value of our land and the value of our lives. As did our coloniser, as well as the governments that happily paid reparations to former slave owners as compensation for the loss of their “property”—that “property” for which compensation was paid referred to enslaved people who had been freed.”

The demand for reparations for colonisation writ large and the return of looted items must be carefully itemised in terms of time frame and the costs to specific groups. For instance, in Ghana, historians would carefully begin to demarcate the beginning of the extractive systems of the colonisers after the first encounters. The political scientists would determine to what extent certain groups were under the control of the colonisers; economists would calculate the scope of the costs of these transactional relationships. This demand is categorically separate and different from the demand for reparations for the slave trade.

The genuine effort to understand the Transatlantic Slave Trade for its system of brutality, depth of inhumanity, and to study its long-lasting effects is undermined by the uncritical view that Africans must also receive reparations. Let’s be clear: reparations are due to the victims of the evil trade, and these are the descendants of the enslaved (I would highlight people of African descent in Haiti, the United States, in Central and South America, the Caribbean Islands and all the lands where the enslaved suffered brutality and inhumanity). While the effect of the slave trade is diffuse because it is bolstered by the fake science of race and racial superiority, actual reparations for slavery are not due to the descendants of the people in Africa, in Ghana.

The history of the slavery in many ethnic groups in modern Ghana predates the arrival of the Europeans and accommodation of the exchange of ‘socially dead’ human beings as slaves was a cultural weakness, a fault within the social structure and cultural philosophy that was gravely exploited by the Christian English (British), the French, the Dutch, the Portuguese, the Danish, the Swedish. The history is clear on this: along the stretch of space called the Gold Coast, the Asante Kingdom, and the Fante confederacy in Anomabo, Cape Coast, and Elmina were complicit, however limited the involvement, in facilitating and supporting this trade with the European slave traders for more than 100 years. There are historical accounts of prisoners of war sold to the Europeans, sold into slavery by the Asante, and there are accounts of victims of war sold to the Europeans, sold into slavery by the Fante. The moral argument for reparations to Ghana for slavery is specious.

The Africans, the Asante and Fante, were, of course, not aware of the emergent pseudo-scientific ideas at the time (during the 18th and 19th centuries) about race that placed Africans at the bottom of the hierarchy of human types; perhaps, if they had known, the Kings and Chiefs of Asante and Fante would not have done what they did. Were the Africans aware of the magnitude of the brutality of the system of slavery practised by the Europeans? They did not. We do not need to be reminded here that the European systems of enslavement created racially subordinate unequal groups; a social system of oppression that survived in various dimensions in the South of the United States after the Civil War, in the form of lynchings, racially motivated killings of African Americans, discriminatory practices in voting, and a cultural celebration of a militarily defeated Confederacy that believed in the cultural subjugation of Africans (so-called ‘blacks’). The language of racial superiority is rife in the United States and in the world, and the primitive belief in human types and the rank-order of culture persists.

The idea to create a ‘Global Reparation Fund’ was the culmination of the Accra Reparation Conference in 2023, sponsored by the Akuffo-Addo government and the African Union. Two years after its creation, it is not clear how this fund in Africa would work to repair the damage of the slave trade and how it will go about identifying the descendants of the estimated 12 and a half million Africans who were victims. Reparatory justice for the victims of the evil slave trade is long overdue, as African Americans have been demanding since the failures of the Reconstruction era. And the Africans, the Asante and Fante, need atonement rituals during their annual festivals to acknowledge their own failures of judgment and will, to ease the long shadow of the “greatest crime against humanity.” Perhaps the Global Reparatory Fund can be used to create appropriate monuments in Ghana for the victims of the evil trade, as the Legacy Museum in Montgomery has done, to take on this necessary task of repairing the “greatest crime against humanity.”

Mahama will continue viable projects from past gov’t – Education Minister

0

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continuing viable projects initiated by previous administrations, provided they deliver value for money and serve the nation’s development agenda.

He made the remarks at the commissioning of a 160-bed dormitory and a 24-unit girls’ sanitary facility at Bimbilla Senior High School in the Northern Region on Sunday, November 2, 2025.

The project, which began under the previous government in collaboration with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), was completed and inaugurated under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

The event was marked by excitement among students and staff, who described the new facilities as a major relief to the school’s long-standing accommodation challenges.

Mr. Iddrisu commended the previous administration for initiating the project, noting that continuity in governance was essential to national progress.

“I will be the first to acknowledge the initiatives of the previous government and to assure you that President John Dramani Mahama, under his resetting agenda, will continue with worthy, viable initiatives of the previous government,” he said. “If it is adding to Ghana’s developmental needs, especially in building manpower, President Mahama will continue it.”

The minister, however, emphasized that projects found to lack value for money would be subject to review. He criticised the abandonment of several GETFund projects in the past, describing such practices as a disservice to taxpayers.

“We will not behave like them, when a number of GETFund projects were left to rot,” he said. “These actions do not give taxpayers justification and the value for money on that project.”

Jamaican Dancehall sensation Popcaan Jamaican Dancehall sensation Popcaan

Jamaican Dancehall sensation Popcaan has dismissed reports claiming he is set to perform at Stonebwoy’s 2025 Bhimfest in Ghana, clarifying that he has not been booked for the event.

Speculation about his participation surged earlier this week after promotional fliers began circulating on social media, listing Popcaan as part of the lineup for the highly anticipated concert scheduled for December 26, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, the “Unruly Boss” set the record straight, assuring his Ghanaian fan base that they would be the first to know whenever an official performance is confirmed.

“To the loyal Unruly fans in Ghana, I have no knowledge of me performing in Ghana on Dec 26.

Whenever I’m performing, you will all know and it will be a celebration and a lifestyle moment that is long overdue,” Popcaan wrote.

Bhimfest, established by Ghanaian Afro-Dancehall star Stonebwoy, is one of West Africa’s premier music festivals, celebrating African and Caribbean unity through music and culture.

The annual event has previously featured international acts such as Busy Signal, Beenie Man and Spice.

In response to the circulating flyers, Stonebwoy’s management team clarified that no official artist lineup has yet been announced, adding that promotional activities for Bhimfest 2025 will formally begin on November 1, 2025.

The team urged fans to rely on verified sources for updates on the event, promising an exciting lineup once official announcements are made.

Gospel Singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, Omije Ojumi, cries out over illness

Gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, popularly known as Omije Ojumi, is reportedly not in the best of health, as a video circulating online has raised concerns.

The music star, who gained fame with her hit song “Omije Ojumi,” was seen in the video sitting on a chair and crying.

The footage was taken at what appeared to be an open-air crusade, where she seemed to have gone seeking a solution for her health issues.

In the clip, the clergy leading the spiritual program attempted to speak with Bunmi, but she could not utter any words, only crying.

She eventually reminded the clergy of her name and it was noticed that she had a plaster on her right hand, suggesting she had recently received medical treatment.

Bunmi Omije Ojumi also showed one of her legs, which appeared to be afflicted. She was seen touching the leg in pain while continuing to cry.

The clergy placed his foot on her and prayed for healing, reassuring her that her worries would soon be over. As he prayed, he also sang songs of praise, encouraging her not to be shy and assuring her that she would testify to God’s goodness in her life.

This came a few months after secular singer Habeeb Olalomi Badmus, aka Portable, also spoke out about his health, having undergone medical tests to determine what was wrong.

Last year, gospel singer Aduke Gold passed away after a battle with cancer, a struggle she kept private until her passing, which deeply saddened the music industry.
