‘This eleventh-hour U-turn epitomises a trial-and-error strategy’

The government has postponed the implementation of the GH¢1 D-Levy The government has postponed the implementation of the GH¢1 D-Levy

The Minority in Parliament has taken a swipe at the government for its decision to postpone the implementation of the GH¢1 Energy Sector Levy due to rising tensions between Israel and Iran.

The government had planned to begin the implementation of the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025, popularly referred to as the Dumsor Levy, on June 16, 2025.

But the Minority has labelled the reversal of the government’s decision as a “chaotic and inconsistent approach to economic governance.”

In a statement issued on June 15, 2015, they noted that “this eleventh-hour U-turn epitomises a trial-and-error strategy and reveals a disturbing lack of stakeholder engagement before the passage of the law” and was “wholly inadequate.”

They also noted that the government is being dishonest and hypocritical for using global tensions as an excuse when it did not accept the previous government’s excuse of global occurrences.

The Minority also demanded that the levy be completely abolished and not just postponed.

They also warned that the government must use its inability to implement the levy as a justification for the power crisis.

In conclusion, the Minority asked the government to remember its campaign promise not to impose new taxes on Ghanaians.

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has declared the 2025 President’s Cup as the beginning of a renewed effort by government to restore Ghana football to its former heights.

Speaking at the official launch of this year’s edition of the competition, Director at the Ministry William Katey said the Cup match reflects the government’s commitment to reviving the game and repositioning it for national pride and international relevance.

The event, held at the Accra Sports Stadium, unveiled plans for the match between long-standing rivals Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, scheduled for July 6.

The launch was attended by top football stakeholders, including Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) President John Ansah.

Katey, who represented Minister of Sports Kofi Adams at the event, described the President’s Cup as a pivotal moment in the government’s roadmap for football development.

“The honorable minister and the government are very committed to restoring Ghanaian football to its old glory, and the event [President’s Cup] is meant to kickstart this commitment. This event will serve as the stepping stone in this direction,” he stated.

The 2025 edition of the President’s Cup will be played in honour of President John Dramani Mahama and is expected to draw national interest, as the two giants clash once again for silverware and bragging rights.

Gov’t committed to establishing medical school in UE/R — Atanga

0

The Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to establishing a medical school in the region to tackle the persistent shortage of healthcare professionals.

During a working visit to the Upper East Regional Hospital on Friday, June 13, Atanga revealed that discussions are ongoing between the government and the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) to kick-start the initiative.

He noted that the region continues to face a persistent shortage of health professionals, partly due to the reluctance of many to accept postings there.

According to the Regional Minister, concerns over security and limited prospects for career advancement remain key deterrents.

“If We address these issues by providing a training centre, like the medical school that is set to take off here in the region, and we train people who are already brought up here, it will help change their perception,” he said.

He recounted an incident in which an external group, seeking to implement a program in the region, reached out to his office for security clearance after receiving warnings that the area was unsafe.

“If you’re posting a doctor or nurse to the Upper East Region and the person is not from here, that perception of insecurity can affect their decision,” he noted.

He further explained that the lack of avenues for career advancement was a significant disincentive for health professionals accepting postings in the region.

“When medical personnel are posted here, and there are no institutions that allow them to further their knowledge or specialise, it discourages them from staying. However, if we establish a medical school, we are not only training locals who are more likely to remain here, but we are also providing a platform for professional development,” he said.
Beyond addressing the staffing gap, Mr. Atanga believes that the establishment of a medical school would open up the region for greater healthcare investment.

“If someone wants to build a health facility, they will consider the availability of doctors. But if they have to transport professionals from Accra or Kumasi, it becomes a disincentive. Investors shy away because of this,” he explained.

The Regional Minister also lamented the region’s vulnerability during the recent nationwide strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, noting that the Upper East Region has fewer private healthcare facilities compared to other regions.

“We were worst hit by the strike because of our limited private sector involvement in healthcare. If we had more private health providers, people would at least have an alternative. But even in the regional capital, such options are countable,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the establishment of the medical school would mark a turning point for the region’s healthcare system and its long-term development.

Ghana signs MoU with mining equipment manufacturer to enhance friendly mining practices

Michael Aidoo (R) after signing the agreement Michael Aidoo (R) after signing the agreement

The Western Regional Member of the Council of State, Michael Kofi Adjei Aidoo, has noted that Ghana has signed a partnership agreement with a leading mining equipment manufacturer, Jinpeng Mining Machinery Co. Ltd.

According to him, this partnership will provide access to environmentally-friendly mining equipment that will also help curb the devastating effects of illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

Announcing the agreement on Facebook, he wrote, “As part of efforts to drive sustainable progress and protect Ghana’s natural resources, I am delighted to announce a partnership and the signing of an MoU with Jinpeng Mining Machinery Co Ltd, a leading mining equipment manufacturer.”

He said the MoU will provide access to legal, environmentally friendly mining technologies, promoting sustainable practices, supporting Ghana’s efforts to curb galamsey, and fostering job creation through training and responsible resource management.

“This initiative aligns with Ghana’s commitment to protecting natural resources for the benefit of its citizens,” Aidoo added.

The Council of State member also added that Ghana’s transport sector needs to be modernised to revolutionise transportation in the country.

“In addition to mining, Ghana’s transport sector also requires transformative solutions to address challenges such as inefficiency, high costs, and reliability issues. Innovations like electric buses, smart fleet technology, and efficient maintenance systems can revolutionise the State Transport Corporation (STC) and Metro Mass Transit, reducing costs and improving reliability.

“We believe that modernising these sectors is crucial for Ghana’s sustainable progress and development. By partnering with global leaders, we can drive progress, restore our land, upgrade our infrastructure, and build a brighter future for Ghana,” he said.

GH₵548m NSS scandal: ORAL is more public-interest than political – Prof. Khalid

0

The ongoing public discourse surrounding the National Service Scheme (NSS) scandal is fundamentally a matter of public interest rather than political manoeuvring, Professor Sharif Mahmud Khalid, Economic Adviser to the Vice President, has said.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, June 14, Prof. Khalid underscored the importance of transparency and accountability in addressing the alleged irregularities that have plagued the vital national programme.

The NSS has been embroiled in a significant scandal involving suspected 81,885 “ghost names” on its payroll, with reports suggesting potential losses of tens of millions of Ghana Cedis monthly to the state.

The Attorney General, Dr Dominic Ayine, recently announced intentions to file charges against 12 key suspects, including former executives, prompting intense public scrutiny.

Prof. Khalid asserted that the widespread public attention and discussion surrounding the NSS issue, particularly the specifics of the alleged fraud and the progress of investigations by ORAL, transcends partisan politics.

He argued that the nature of the alleged financial malfeasance directly impacts public funds and the integrity of a programme critical for Ghanaian youth, making it inherently a matter of national concern.

“This is not a political issue to be trivialised or confined to party lines,” Prof. Khalid stated on the programme. “When public resources are allegedly misappropriated, and a scheme meant to serve our youth is compromised, the public has a right, and indeed a duty, to demand answers and accountability. The intensified public interest, in this case, is a healthy sign of civic engagement.”

He emphasised that transparency from state institutions, including the Attorney General’s office, in providing updates on such cases, is crucial.

While acknowledging the complexities and necessary delays in legal processes – recognising that the “wheels of justice turn slowly” – Prof. Khalid supported the ongoing dialogue as a mechanism for building public trust.

The NSS scandal, which came to light with revelations of thousands of suspected non-existent personnel on the payroll, has sparked calls from various civil society organisations for thorough investigations and prosecution of those found culpable.

The Attorney General’s office has stated its commitment to recovering any misappropriated funds and assets linked to the alleged fraud, reinforcing the view that the core objective is to reclaim what rightfully belongs to the Ghanaian people.

Prof. Khalid’s comments contribute to a broader call for public interest cases to be treated with the seriousness they deserve, devoid of political spin, and with a steadfast focus on ensuring justice and protecting state resources.

Fathers must be good examples of God – Very Rev Prof Martey

0

Very Reverend Prof Emmanuel Martey is a former Presbyterian Church Moderator Very Reverend Prof Emmanuel Martey is a former Presbyterian Church Moderator

The Very Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey, a Former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), has urged fathers to be good examples of God to their children.

Very Rev Prof Martey indicated that fathers were the representatives of God and therefore must ensure that their character and actions depicted that of God.

He gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) when he visited the PCG, Redemption Congregation in Tema Community Nine, on Father’s Day.

The day was used to climax the Men’s Fellowship week celebration on the theme: “Celebrating Our Heritage: Persisting in Mission – Men, Go Labour On.”

“In fact, the symbol of a father, that metaphor, is that which we use to introduce God to the children,” he said. He explained that because the first Christian prayers start with “Our Father,” children and the world see God in their fathers.

“If our children and the world will give their lives to God, it’s the character of the fathers that they see that will encourage them to go to God,” he added.

He emphasized that due to some fathers’ character of irresponsibility and wickedness, some people refuse to be Christians, as they see God the Father as the same as their earthly father.

Elvis Panford, Clerk of Session, PCG Redemption, in a sermon, urged fathers to be active instead of passive in the lives of their children.

Panford said: “You are a father because of the children you have. Just as doctors are there because of the patients and teachers are there because of learners, the same applies to fathers. You must be active in the lives of your children.”

He stressed that if parents, especially fathers, do not train their children well, they would grow to become a burden to the nation.

“The call of fatherhood is not optional; it is mandatory. Treat this call with urgency. Lead the children spiritually, and don’t shirk your responsibility because you have an issue with their mother,” he said.

PassionAir blames mid-air turbulence on weather, assures of safety commitment

0

Domestic airline, PassionAir has attributed Saturday’s mid-air turbulence on Flight OP 149 from Kumasi to Accra to ongoing seasonal weather changes, but was quick to assure the traveling public of its unwavering commitment to safety and operational standards.

The airline confirmed that passengers experienced discomfort due to “moderate turbulence” during the June 14 flight and extended apologies to those affected.

“We sincerely apologise to all affected passengers for the inconvenience caused,” it stated in a press release issued Sunday, June 15.

PassionAir linked the turbulence to what it described as “significant and sometimes unpredictable weather variations” brought on by the rainy season, including heavy rainfall, strong winds, crosswinds, and temperature fluctuations that disrupt stable atmospheric conditions.

“Our routes to and from Kumasi, Takoradi, Tamale, Sunyani, and Wa are more likely to encounter varying levels of turbulence during this period,” the airline explained.

In response, the company says it is intensifying coordination with meteorological and aviation authorities to monitor weather patterns and ensure passenger safety.

“While we expect mostly slight to moderate weather disruptions, rare instances of severe conditions may occur due to these natural weather changes,” the airline added.

Reinforcing its safety credentials, PassionAir stressed that it continues to comply strictly with regulatory requirements.

“The safety and comfort of our passengers and crew remain our highest priority. We will take every necessary measure to ensure minimal impact on operations while maintaining the highest level of safety.”

The airline also expressed gratitude to passengers for their continued trust amid weather-related challenges.

A long-awaited breakthrough – CHOPSS celebrates inclusion in free SHS policy

Private SHS are to be included in the Free SHS program Private SHS are to be included in the Free SHS program

The Conference of Heads of Private Second Cycle Schools (CHOPSS) has described the government’s decision to include private senior high schools in the Free SHS policy as a “long-awaited breakthrough,” marking what many believe is a new chapter for Ghana’s education sector.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Saturday, June 14, the Public Relations Officer of CHOPSS, Richard Kyei Naphtali, could barely contain his joy.

“Excitement is an understatement. We are more than elated.

“We think that it’s welcoming news. It is a long-awaited news. It is something we’ve always wanted to have, and I think it is the greatest opportunity we’ve been given. It is good,” he said.

The announcement was initially made on Monday, May 27, by the Ministry of Education during the launch of revised school selection guidelines for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates.

Under the new policy, candidates can now choose up to seven schools instead of six, with private SHSs officially included in the list of eligible institutions covered by the Free SHS programme.

For CHOPSS, this is not just a policy change—it’s a hard-won victory after years of advocacy.

Naphtali noted, “This inclusion marks a turning point for private institutions.

“We have consistently called for a level playing field and an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to national education delivery. Today, we have that chance.”

The school selection window, which opened on May 27, was originally expected to close on June 6, but has since been extended to June 25 to allow students more time to make informed choices.

This is justice – Manasseh hails Mahama over Zoomlion contract termination

Manasseh Azure Awuni is an investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni is an investigative journalist

Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for terminating the long-standing sanitation contract between Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), describing the move as a decisive and moral action that reaffirms his faith in Ghana’s democracy.

In a post on social media, Manasseh wrote:

“Your decision to discontinue this contract has reinforced my long‑held faith in not giving up on a just and noble cause even if nobody else believes in it.

“It’s been 12 years fighting, and your action is the most appropriate response to those who asked why I would not give up and move on, when nobody was prepared to discontinue the contract. In a significant way you have restored my faith in our democracy.”

The Zoomlion-YEA contract, originally set up as a 19-year sanitation agreement, has long been the subject of public scrutiny and investigative reports alleging mismanagement and inefficiencies.

Manasseh was one of the most vocal critics, consistently spotlighting questionable aspects of the contract in a series of reports over the past decade.

Following a formal petition submitted by Manasseh with fresh evidence of systemic mismanagement and post-expiry payments, President Mahama announced the termination of the contract, stating that it would not be renewed.

He has further directed that all payments made to Zoomlion after the contract’s expiration be audited.

Beyond ending the controversial deal, the President also revealed a policy shift — future sanitation contracts will now be awarded through competitive regional bidding to ensure cost-effectiveness and service improvement.

The move, according to officials, is expected to free up significant funds that will be used to increase the salaries of street sweepers to “a more liveable income.”

Additionally, contracts related to fumigation services under the YEA will be reviewed, with poorly performing ones facing possible cancellation.

Postponed energy levy exposes government’s poor planning – Minority

Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin is the Minority leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin is the Minority leader

The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament has strongly condemned the government’s last-minute decision to indefinitely postpone the implementation of the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025, dubbed the “Dumsor Levy.”

In a scathing statement, the Caucus accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of “fundamental incompetence and hypocrisy.”

“This postponement exposes a government unprepared and unwilling to consult stakeholders before rushing into legislation,” the Minority declared.

“They criticised the levy as an unnecessary burden on Ghanaians already struggling with high living costs, warning that it would worsen transportation and food prices.

The Caucus also rejected the government’s justification for the levy, which cited global oil market instability.

“This is the same excuse they once mocked the previous NPP administration for using,” they said.

“Now, barely months in power, they’re singing a different tune—proof of their political opportunism.”

Demanding an immediate repeal, the Minority called on the government to table a repeal bill under a certificate of urgency.

“Ghanaians deserve better than trial-and-error governance,” they asserted, adding that the Akufo-Addo administration had maintained stable power without such punitive taxes.

The statement also highlighted failures in energy sector management, accusing the current government of stalling critical reforms.

“The Honourable Minister must present the Loss Reduction Programme documents to Parliament for scrutiny,” they insisted, stressing the need for transparency.

The Minority vowed to resist any further hardship imposed on citizens, urging Ghanaians to unite against the levy.

“This government promised relief, not more taxes. We demand a full repeal—nothing less.”

NDC hit with sad news

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Ashaiman Chairman and member of the National Zongo Caucus Coordinating Team, Shaddad Umar Jallo, has died.

He reportedly passed away on Saturday afternoon, June 14, 2025, at East Legon after suddenly complaining of ill health.

While the exact cause of death is yet to be officially confirmed, close family sources suspect high blood pressure may have been a contributing factor.

Jallo, who was serving his second term as constituency chairman, played a pivotal role in the NDC’s 2024 electoral campaign.

He was instrumental in drastically reducing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vote share in Ashaiman, almost halving their 2020 performance.

Beyond Ashaiman, Jallo traveled extensively as part of the National Zongo Caucus coordinating team, helping galvanize support for the NDC across key communities nationwide.

However, his final days were reportedly clouded by disappointments. A close family member, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed, “Shaddad Umar Jallo died an unhappy man. Despite his sacrifices to return the party to power, he regretted that no one from Ashaiman Constituency has received any significant appointment in the Mahama-led administration despite promises prior to the elections. He spoke of that pain often”, the source iterated.

JoyNews can confirm that his body has been transported to Akatamanso in the Kpone-Katamanso Constituency.

Burial arrangements are underway, with interment scheduled for 9:00 am Sunday, June 15, 2025, in accordance with Islamic rites.

He left behind a wife and 8 children.

Asantehene emphasises agriculture is key to Ghana’s future

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II believes agriculture is key to the nation's development Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II believes agriculture is key to the nation’s development

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has reiterated the vital role of agriculture in Ghana’s progress, emphasising that the nation’s development hinges on a thriving agricultural sector.

Speaking during a courtesy call by the Minister of Agriculture, Eric Opoku, the Asantehene stressed the need for agriculture to be made truly fruitful for its intended purpose, stating that it is the very backbone of Ghana’s economy.

A key concern raised by the Asantehene was the aging demographic of farmers, noting that younger generations are not actively involved in the sector. He urged the Minister to prioritise making agriculture lucrative and attractive to the youth, emphasising the need for measures to support them in choosing farming as a viable career. He said this would boost food production and lessen reliance on imports.

Addressing the issue of land availability, the Asantehene expressed his willingness to facilitate access to land for aspiring farmers. He pledged to liaise with chiefs to release lands for agricultural purposes, emphasizing the need for mutually beneficial agreements that incentivize landowners (chiefs) to support farming initiatives. This, he believes, will significantly contribute to increased food production and national food security.

The Asantehene further highlighted the crucial role of irrigation in ensuring sustainable farming practices, regardless of water availability. He encouraged the Minister to promote irrigation techniques that would enable farmers to cultivate crops year-round, independent of seasonal rainfall patterns, thereby bolstering food production and food security.

In addition to these points, the Asantehene advocated for a revival of the “Operation Feed Yourself” agenda, originally spearheaded by former Head of State, General Acheampong. He believes this initiative could stimulate agricultural growth, increase domestic food production, reduce dependence on imports, and create employment opportunities for the youth.

Finally, the Asantehene emphasised the need for comprehensive support for small-scale farmers, who he recognizes as the cornerstone of Ghana’s agricultural sector.

He urged the government to provide small-scale farmers with essential resources such as inputs, credit, and extension services to enhance their productivity and contribute to national food security.

Diddy’s staff would arrange for IV drips, massages for him after a ‘King Night’

0

Jonathan Perez, a former personal assistant to Sean “Diddy” Combs, was called to the stand on June 13, 2025. Perez said he worked for Combs between December 2021 and September 2024.

This is the fourth witness to testify under immunity at the trial. Another Combs assistant, George Kaplan, also testified under an immunity agreement, as well as Bryana Bongolan and former InterContinental Hotel security guard Eddy Garcia.

Jonathan Perez testified that his starting annual salary was $85,000 and that he later made $100,000.

Kristina Khorram, then Combs’ chief of staff, was Perez’s direct supervisor, he said. Khorram and Combs seemed to have a good working relationship, and “some days” it seemed they had a good personal relationship, too, Perez testified.

Perez’s typical hours were 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and another personal assistant would work the night shift once he was finished, he said. Combs typically had three or four personal assistants, he said.

Khorram made him aware of “king Nights,” which Perez described as Combs “going to (a) hotel to have private time with a female.”

“Jane,” who testified in this trial under a pseudonym and dated Combs from 2021 to 2024, would accompany Combs at hotels for “king Nights” while Perez worked for Combs, Perez said.

When asked, Perez described Jane as Combs’ “female friend, companion, I’m not sure exactly.”

Combs’ staff would get anywhere from two hours to a full day’s notice to set up a “king night,” Perez said.

Whichever assistant was working in the evening would typically set up the “king night,” Perez said. Perez typically worked during the day, so he estimates he set up only about five “king nights” for Combs, he said.

“It was a lot of packing materials, making sure that he was going to have everything he would need for 12 to 24 hours without having to bother anybody,” Perez testified.

Perez brought food, liquor, music, red lights, condoms, lubricant, and sometimes honey, he said. Honey “enhances the man’s libido,” Perez testified.

Perez said he sometimes also went to sex stores to purchase adult outfits and high heels. He would pay for the items on his company card or with cash he got from security, he said.

The room would be “just bit of a mess and in disarray,” Perez testified.

“Just like lots of sheets and towels and oils,” he added.

Perez said his main purpose for cleaning up was to make sure no items were left behind.

The former assistant testified that Combs and his guest would be tired when he saw them after a “king night.”

Combs’ staff would typically arrange for a meal, a massage or an IV drip for him after a “king night,” Perez said.

The jury has now seen messages that Perez sent to Combs and “Jane” on August 12, 2023, involving information about a hotel room.

“Just left two candles and room phone in front of room door. I’m only 9 minutes away if y’all need anything,” Perez wrote.

The jury also saw messages between then-Combs chief of staff Kristina Khorram, Perez, and another assistant about setting up a hotel room. In the messages, Khorram asked if the room was done, and Perez said he was going to run to the store to get outfits for Jane.

In another conversation seen in court, from May 2023, Khorram asked another assistant how cleanup was going. “Slipped & fell twice,” the assistant responded.

Remember: “Jane,” who testified under a pseudonym in this trial and dated Combs from 2021 to 2024, testified extensively about going with Combs to what she called “hotel nights,” which she described as sexual encounters with a male “entertainer,” typically in a hotel room.

Cassie Ventura, who dated Combs from around 2007 to 2018, earlier testified about similar encounters, which she said Combs called “Freak Offs.”

Former Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, has called on party supporters to rally strong support for former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in his bid to lead the party again as its flagbearer.

Addressing a crowd of party supporters at a yet to be identified event, Samira Bawumia described her husband as a ‘good man’ who had served the nation’s interests diligently.

She asserted that his achievements and work ethic as vice president were unmatched by any of his predecessors in the country’s history.

“Let us support Dr Bawumia because he is a good man. He is the only vice president in Ghana’s history who worked very well for the country and served diligently,” she said in a video shared by Daily Graphic on Facebook.

Samira Bawumia also emphasised that Dr Bawumia has demonstrated both the competence and commitment necessary to serve the country dutifully, and therefore deserves the support required to realise and implement his visionary agenda for the nation.

“He served well and supported former President Akufo-Addo. He has done everything he needs to do and now the time has come for him to also implement his visionary ideas for the country,” she continued.

The former Second Lady noted that her husband, like other candidates in the party, deserves a second chance to lead the NPP.

“Just as we did for others, let us do same for Dr Bawumia. Just as others got second chances, Bawumia deserves same second chances to lead the New Patriotic Party for him to serve the country. We have learned and grown and we know the way forward. We have all learned what we need to do to help Ghanaians and Dr Bawumia is ready to do what Ghanaians want,” she added.

Final two bodies recovered, death toll hits 7

0

The search operation for the missing students of Lawra Senior High School has officially ended after the final two bodies were recovered early Sunday morning, bringing the death toll to seven.

Local authorities confirmed that the last two bodies were found in the Dewo River, about two kilometres downstream from the Dikpe River, where the tragic incident occurred on Saturday. This marked the conclusion of a nearly 24-hour recovery effort following the canoe disaster.

The students, all members of the school’s cadet corps, were on a routine jogging exercise when they attempted to cross the Black Volta River at Dikpe using a canoe. The vessel capsized midstream, tossing all ten students into the river.

Three of the students managed to swim to safety, while seven others were initially unaccounted for. A joint team comprising residents, NADMO officials, and volunteers immediately launched a rescue operation, where five bodies had been retrieved by Saturday evening. The final two were discovered early Sunday, offering closure to the search efforts.

The Municipal Chief Executive, together with education and security officials, is set to meet the bereaved families to coordinate support, including psychosocial counselling and funeral arrangements.

Death toll rises as Iran and Israel continue to trade strikes

0

At least eight people were killed and around 200 injured in Israel following overnight strikes, local media reported on Sunday, citing rescue workers.

According to the Magen David Adom rescue service, two children and at least two other people were killed in the Israeli city of Bat Yam when a rocket hit a residential building early on Sunday.

There were also reports of buildings being hit in Tel Aviv nad Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said it had carried out an “extensive series of strikes on targets in Tehran.”

The IDF said the targets included the Iranian Defence Ministry and other sites related to “the Iranian regime’s efforts to obtain a nuclear weapon and where the Iranian regime hid its nuclear archive.”

Israel began attacking Iran on Friday morning, aiming for nuclear facilities, leading military figures, top nuclear scientists, defence positions, cities and oil facilities.

Since then, according to official figures, dozens of people have been killed and hundreds more injured in Iran.

Iran said the airstrikes were a declaration of war and have fired hundreds of missiles and drones towards Israel in retaliation.

The IDF said early Sunday that the latest targets included the headquarters of an Iranian state nuclear research organization in Tehran, known as the Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research.

GRA’s postponement sensible amid Oil shock threat – Franklin Cudjoe

0

Founding President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has described the government’s decision to suspend the implementation of the controversial Energy Sector Levy, commonly called the Fuel Levy as a “sensible” and timely move, given the looming global oil price hikes driven by Middle East tensions.

Reacting to the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) directive on June 13 to indefinitely postpone the rollout of the GHS 1 per litre levy, Cudjoe said on Facebook that the government was right to step back and reassess the potential economic impact before proceeding with such a policy.

“As oil prices are set to rise due to tension in the Middle East, the government must assess the situation and likely impact before rolling out the GHS 1 ‘dumsor’ levy,” he wrote.

Cudjoe further urged the government to respond to the looming crisis by fast-tracking domestic oil production, investing recent foreign exchange and gold windfalls wisely—particularly in agriculture—and recovering stolen public funds from the last eight years to reinvest in economic buffers.

His comments come as the Mahama-led government faces criticism from the Minority in Parliament over the sudden U-turn on the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025. Critics have accused the government of poor consultation and inconsistent policymaking.

President Mahama has directed the Finance and Energy Ministries to model the potential impact of rising oil prices linked to the Iran-Israel conflict, with assurances that citizens will be protected from undue economic hardship.

NSA scandal: AG’s briefing in public interest

0

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has applauded Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, for what he describes as a bold and educational approach in handling the recent National Service Authority (NSA) scandal.

Responding to criticism from the New Patriotic Party’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah — who argued that the Attorney General had prematurely indicted former NSA officials in the public eye — Cudjoe defended the AG’s actions as necessary for public accountability.

“I am totally opposed to your viewpoint that these persons are being persecuted,” Cudjoe stated on Channel One TV‘s The Big Issue on Saturday June 15. “I think rather we should doff our hats to the AG and his department, who are doing what I call public interest education. You see, if you don’t educate the public and carry them along, sometimes even justice could be procured.”

His comments come in the wake of a June 13 press briefing in which the Attorney General disclosed alleged payroll fraud amounting to GH¢548 million and named 12 former NSA officials, including high-profile figures such as Mustapha Ussif, Osei Assibey Antwi, and Gifty Oware-Mensah.

Ahiagbah had criticised the move as a violation of due process and the constitutional presumption of innocence, warning that it could unfairly sway public opinion ahead of court proceedings. He questioned why the AG would “convict people in the court of public opinion” before filing charges.

But Cudjoe believes that the public has a right to be informed, especially in cases involving alleged large-scale misuse of public funds.

For him, transparency from the Attorney General’s office does not equal persecution. Instead, it equips citizens with knowledge and confidence in the justice system.

The Attorney General has maintained that the disclosures are being made for transparency and not for politics.

Kevin Taylor Exposed As Okatakyie Afrifa Reveals The Truth Behind Fake Bawumia Picture

0

Popular Ghanaian media personality Okatakyie Afrifa, host of For The Records, has exposed US-based journalist Kevin Taylor of posting a fake picture of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President of Ghana. He exposed Kevin Taylor on Saturday, 14th June, 2025.

Kevin Taylor recently shared a picture on his official Facebook page, claiming it showed Dr Bawumia sitting in his living room with an expensive bottle of whisky on the table. In his post, Taylor suggested that Bawumia might have been drinking the exotic whisky. The post quickly went viral and sparked conversations on social media.

However, Okatakyie Afrifa has strongly denied the authenticity of the photo. According to him, the picture was edited by Kevin Taylor to deceive the public. He urged Ghanaians to zoom into the picture and take a closer look, saying it clearly shows signs of editing. He believes the image was manipulated to create a false impression about the former Vice President.

“This is not right. Kevin Taylor edited that photo. If you zoom in well, you’ll see that it is fake,” Afrifa said on his show.

The controversy began after Kevin Taylor made a bold statement on Facebook on June 13, 2025. In his post, he criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), calling Bawumia incompetent. He also stated that it should not be a big issue if Bawumia enjoys whisky at home. Taylor ended his post by saying life is short and invited Bawumia to meet him in Washington D.C. to enjoy a drink together.

Kevin Taylor is known for his hard-hitting journalism. He is the host of “With All Due Respect” and often targets government officials and institutions. Although his work promotes transparency, this new development raises questions about the accuracy of his reports.

I’m Sad Such Treatment Could Be Done to Fine Men Who Helped This Country – Freddie

0

The political landscape in Ghana has been thrown into a whirlpool of emotions following the recent controversy involving Ken Ofori-Atta, the country’s Finance Minister. In a heartfelt and striking statement, Freddie Blay, a seasoned politician and prominent figure in Ghana’s political arena, expressed his deep sadness and disappointment over what he describes as unjust treatment meted out to men like Ofori-Atta—men who have dedicated themselves to the service of the nation.

Freddie Blay’s remarks come amidst mounting criticism and intense scrutiny faced by Ken Ofori-Atta, whose stewardship of Ghana’s economy has been both praised and heavily questioned in recent times. The saga has sparked passionate debates across the country, with many supporters rallying to defend the minister, while critics demand accountability and change.

In a candid interview, Blay didn’t hold back his emotions, saying, “I’m truly saddened that such treatment could be done to fine men who helped this country.” These words resonate deeply in a nation grappling with economic challenges and political tensions. For Blay, this isn’t just about one man—it’s about the broader message sent to those who have worked tirelessly to build Ghana’s future.

Ken Ofori-Atta’s tenure has seen significant strides in certain sectors, including efforts to stabilize the economy, attract foreign investments, and initiate important fiscal reforms. Yet, the challenges have been enormous, with global economic pressures, inflation, and local fiscal constraints complicating governance. The minister’s critics argue that some policies have not yielded the desired results, while supporters emphasize the difficult circumstances under which these decisions were made.

Freddie Blay’s defense of Ofori-Atta highlights a critical debate on political leadership and the sacrifices of public servants. “It is important we recognize the dedication and contributions of individuals who have given their best for the country,” Blay emphasized, “before rushing to judgment or casting stones.” His statement serves as a reminder that behind every public figure is a human being trying to navigate complex realities.

This saga has stirred reflections on how Ghana treats its leaders, especially those who step up during challenging times. Blay’s sorrowful tone suggests a call for fairness, respect, and appreciation for efforts made—even when outcomes are not perfect.

As the nation watches how this story unfolds, Freddie Blay’s comments invite all Ghanaians to pause and consider the bigger picture: a country that thrives not by tearing down its leaders but by supporting them to serve better. Whether one agrees or disagrees with Ofori-Atta’s policies, Blay’s appeal is clear—respect and dignity should remain intact for those who have committed themselves to Ghana’s progress.

In the midst of political storms, voices like Freddie Blay’s remind us that empathy and gratitude can strengthen the nation’s resolve to move forward together. The Ofori-Atta saga, therefore, is more than a political controversy—it is a reflection of Ghana’s values and the treatment of those who dare to lead.

Hairstyles To Keep You Looking Polished And Chic

0

There’s something undeniably powerful about a good hairstyle. It frames your face, sets the tone for your entire outfit, and can instantly elevate your presence from casual to sophisticated. Whether you’re stepping out for a corporate meeting, a weekend event, or an intimate dinner, your hairstyle should always work in harmony with your fashion sense. In 2025, the focus is on polished finishes, clean silhouettes, and effortlessly chic looks that flatter without fuss.

Imagine gliding into a room with a smooth, pulled-back bun that subtly highlights your cheekbones and neckline. The grace it adds is both timeless and modern—an ideal choice for those who love elegance without trying too hard. For women who prefer softness, sleek waves that skim the shoulders bring just the right balance of structure and romance. They move with your outfit and complement everything from power suits to Ankara dresses.

Hairstyling today goes beyond trends—it’s about curating a signature look that speaks for you. A neat center part or a precise side sweep tells a story of intentional beauty. There’s confidence in control, and that’s exactly what well-groomed styles offer. Whether you wear natural coils, chemically straightened hair, or a relaxed weave, the key is in how it’s styled and maintained.

Tidy edges, a smooth finish, and healthy shine can transform even the simplest look into something runway-worthy. Pairing your hair with your wardrobe choices also helps. A glossy low ponytail brings out the high collar of a tailored blazer, just as a tucked bob draws attention to your statement earrings and soft chiffon blouse. Hair should never be an afterthought—it’s part of the entire look.

Accessories, too, play a silent but significant role. A gold hair cuff, satin scrunchie, or minimalist pin can take a hairstyle from basic to breathtaking. Yet even without them, a well-moisturized, clean, and well-arranged look speaks volumes. Chic doesn’t always mean complicated—it simply means intentional.

Musah Mohammed donates jerseys and footballs to youth teams in Nkawkaw

0

Ghanaian footballer Musah Mohammed has made a significant gesture to support youth football development in his hometown of Nkawkaw.

Through the Musah Foundation, the 23-year-old Bodrumspor midfielder donated sets of jerseys, footballs, and an undisclosed amount of money to two local youth teams.

The presentation took place on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at the Nkawkaw Salvation Park during a mini football festival organised to mark the occasion.

The two beneficiary teams faced off in an exhibition match, which Mohammed attended. After the game, he interacted with the young players and shared words of encouragement.

“I would say the motivation is from the beginning of my career,” Mohammed told Joy Sports. “You can see there are a lot of young footballers and some older footballers in this town who didn’t get the opportunity to utilise their talent at the top level.

“So as far as I’m able to reach the top—and I’m still progressing—I decided to put something like this in my town so it can motivate the young ones and the seniors as well.”

The team that won the youth football competition received a trophy and medals, while the first runner-up was also awarded medals, along with the jerseys and footballs.

Musah Mohammed also revealed plans to create further opportunities for young players through talent showcases.

“As time goes on, we are going to be organising some gala matches for the young ones. There will be scouts from various countries, especially in Turkey, because that’s where I started my career.”

The day ended with a friendly game between Professionals (Musah XI) and Nkawkaw Barracks.

Ghana’s zero fuel buffers puts it at risk amid global tensions

0

Duncan Amoah is the Executive Director of COPEC Duncan Amoah is the Executive Director of COPEC

The Executive Director of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Duncan Amoah, has bemoaned Ghana’s over-reliance on imported refined petroleum products.

According to him, this makes Ghana vulnerable to global and external shocks.

On the back of the current Israel-Iran tensions, Ghana stands in the position to bear the brunt, even though the tensions broke just a few days ago.

COPEC said Ghana should not have to feel the impact immediately, but that is not the case since the country has no buffers.

“We should not be feeling the impact [of global price shocks] this immediately. But as it stands now, our buffers are all down,” he was quoted by citinewsroom.com.

Amoah added that there is a need for urgent reforms in Ghana’s energy sector to reduce the reliance on fuel imports.

He noted that the dependence exposes the country to fuel price hikes in the event of geopolitical tensions.

“There is a lot of geopolitical tension. We cannot continue to be price seekers, we cannot continue to be global observers. We cannot continue to allow international Oil Marketing Companies to come down here, take our hydrocarbon resources and ship everything back to Europe, go refine and process them, and then we will go back with our cargos for the refined product to our country for $400 every month,” he noted.

He indicated his confidence in the current sector minister’s ability to handle the situation and make reforms that reduce the dependency.

“That strategy has also got to change. I think that the current energy minister, John Jinapor, if anybody can fix the situation, should be better placed. We will urge him to re-strategise and get Ghana to be a global observer.

“Anytime the prices go up, our economy is busted completely, and then things have to go back because Iran is fighting Israel. We should not be feeling this impact immediately,” he added.

Frightened Iranians flee major cities as Netanyahu vows further strikes

Some residents in Tehran have been fleeing Iran’s capital as a sense of panic takes hold amid the escalating conflict with Israel.

Many are heading towards the north, near the Caspian Sea, which is a more rural and isolated area. But residents told CNN that the roads are so gridlocked that it is difficult to move.

One family, who wished to remain anonymous, decided to leave Tehran with their two small children and their elderly parents. They are worried that the government has housed officials and military leaders within highly populated, upper-middle-class neighbourhoods, putting civilians at risk.

I don’t want to leave my home, but I am not going to put my young children in this position,” the father said. “I hope that the US steps in to stop the attacks between both countries.”

In the city of Shiraz, long lines for petrol have been forming around the city. Residents are also stocking up on food, water, and diapers.

Cars full of families with suitcases and water strapped to the roof have been seen around the city with many families leaving for the countryside.

One family said they waited one hour to get petrol so they could leave.

Fathers must be good examples of God – Very Rev. Prof Martey

0

By Laudia Sawer

Tema, June 15, GNA-The Very Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey, a Former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), has urged fathers to be good examples of God to their children.

Very Rev. Prof. Martey indicated that fathers were the representatives of God and therefore must ensure that their character and actions depicted that of God.

Mr Elvis Panford, Clerk of Session, PCG Redemption, in a sermon, urged fathers to be active instead of passive in the lives of their children.

Mr Panford said: “You are a father because of the children you have.

A must-read guide for Ghana’s diaspora

0

Many Ghanaians living overseas dream of owning property back home. But while the dream is powerful, the reality often proves challenging — land disputes, missing titles, and failed building projects are common pitfalls.

Still, with a thoughtful approach and the right partners, you can turn your investment into a success story.

This guide unpacks the essential knowledge and smart strategies that diaspora buyers need before diving into Ghana’s real estate market—whether your goal is to build, earn, or retire in Ghana.

1. Land Ownership in Ghana: Know the System Before You Buy

Unlike the land systems in many Western countries, Ghana’s land is primarily under customary ownership — controlled by families, clans, or traditional authorities (stools).

This makes the process more complex than many expect.

Legal Essentials:

● Ghanaian citizens living abroad are eligible for 99-year leaseholds.

● Foreign nationals can secure 50-year leases, which must include a renewal

clause.

● Skipping documentation or buying from an unverified seller can land you in long, expensive legal disputes.

What to Do:

● Always request a Cadastral Site Plan from a licensed surveyor.

● Conduct a Lands Commission search to verify ownership, litigation status, and land use rights.

● Engage a qualified attorney who specializes in real estate to examine all contracts and payment plans.

● Avoid paying everything upfront—tie your payments to documented milestones.

2. Trust Issues: Don’t Let Familiar Faces Derail Your Investment

Too many diaspora buyers put faith in family or friends to handle property purchases or oversee construction—only to find out they’ve been misled.

Common Pitfalls:

● Land gets sold to multiple buyers.

● Payments are made, but construction never starts.

● Homes are built on disputed or improperly zoned land.

Smart Moves:

● Treat every deal as business—even with relatives. Use formal contracts.

● Choose registered real estate firms or licensed agents with a real office and

verifiable track records.

● Request geotagged photos, video walkthroughs, and regular progress updates if

you’re remote.

✨ Skip the Stress: Buy Ready-to-Own at Manora by Quao Realty

3. Buying Off-Plan: Rewarding If You Choose Wisely

Off-plan properties (buying before construction is complete) offer affordable pricing and flexible payment terms—but they come with risk.

What to Look For:

● A developer with financial stability (not entirely dependent on pre-sales)

● A portfolio of completed projects you can verify

● Clear timelines, penalties for delays, and refund clauses in the contract

Bonus Tip:

Stick with developers who:

● Offer installment plans

● Provide consistent updates (weekly or monthly)

● Work with licensed surveyors, engineers, and project teams

4. Think Beyond Building — Focus on Long-Term Returns

That large house in Kasoa might seem like a status symbol, but without renters or good upkeep, it quickly becomes a liability. That’s why diaspora investors are leaning toward serviced apartments in gated communities across East Legon, Cantonments, and Airport Residential.

Why Apartments Win:

● 24/7 security, water supply, and power backups

● Built-in property management for both short- and long-term rental

● Occupancy rates as high as 80% in key neighborhoods

● Earn up to $4,000/month with short-term rentals

● Diaspora Mortgages: Offered by banks like Stanbic Ghana and First National

Bank with rates between 11.5%–13% and up to 15-year terms

Pro Tip:

Open a Ghanaian cedi account to handle local expenses, taxes, and utilities. It also

cushions you from currency fluctuations.

7. The Roadmap: From Dream to Deed

To move from vision to ownership, follow these steps:

1. Clarify your purpose: Retirement, rental income, or resale?

2. Choose a verified location with proven demand

3. Hire professionals—lawyers, surveyors, agents

4. Do your due diligence—check land titles, court cases, family claims

5. Pick a financing method—mortgage, cash, or developer plan

6. Secure legal paperwork—SPA, indenture, title, site plan

7. Plan for management—Airbnb, local agents, or booking platforms

Final Word: Let Strategy Guide Your Sentiment

Real estate in Ghana offers meaningful returns — but only if approached strategically.

As a diaspora investor, you hold the advantage of foreign income, stronger currencies, and vision.

But success requires careful planning, verified partnerships, and constant oversight.

Whether you’re buying to build, earn, or leave a legacy, remember: a well-bought property in the right area with solid documentation becomes a lasting asset for generations.

The government’s 24-hour economy market initiative is aimed at promoting economic activity and improving the overall market experience, Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, has said.

The minister said the funding for this initiative will come from the district assemblies’ allocation, with a specific directive to use 25 per cent of their funds for developing these markets.

“We are giving the money to the district assemblies, and we expect them to use 25 per cent of their funds to develop a city central model market,” the minister explained.

Ibrahim made the remarks when he responded to a question on the Floor of Parliament on Thursday.

“Mr Speaker, this is a government project, and we must live up to it,” he urged.

The minister noted that the initiative was part of the government’s efforts to decentralise power and resources to the district level, allowing for more effective and efficient management of local resources.

“Mr Speaker, the 24-Hour Economy market concept is designed to provide a modern and efficient marketplace for traders and customers, incorporating safety features and other amenities to reduce congestion and promote economic activity.

“The development of these markets is expected to have a positive impact on the economy, providing opportunities for traders and customers to engage in economic activities beyond traditional hours,” he said.

Ibrahim added that the initiative also aimed to promote women’s economic empowerment and provide support services for traders.

“Mr Speaker, as the government moves forward with the implementation of this initiative, it is expected that the 24-Hour Economy markets will become a hub for economic activity in Ghana, driving growth and development in the country,” he told Parliament.

We are killing our own movie industry

0

Ama K Abebrese is a popular Ghanaian filmmaker Ama K Abebrese is a popular Ghanaian filmmaker

Renowned Ghanaian filmmaker, Ama K Abebrese, has lamented the persistent copyright infringement of movies, specifically Ghanaian movies, by local television stations, describing it as a major threat to the growth of the country’s film industry.

Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz on June 14, 2025, Ama recounted a personal experience involving her film, ‘The Burial of Kojo,’ which premiered on Netflix on March 31, 2019.

Just a month later, on April 30, she discovered a local TV station airing the movie without authorisation.

“I don’t know where this TV station was. And I remember we hadn’t even been paid by Netflix for the film.

“It was a struggle to make that film. We couldn’t find investors, so we resorted to Kickstarter. Then a TV station showed it without permission. And we actually contacted the TV station, and the person we contacted started playing dumb. He even blocked my number,” she said.

She also recounted her past experience as Head of Productions at Viasat 1, narrating how they legally acquired film rights for the Hollywood movie ‘Harry Potter,’ only for rival TV stations to show the movie without any authorisation.

“This is something I’ve been dealing with since 2012. Nothing has been done. People feel like they can do whatever they want because they know someone in power,” she said in frustration.

She also criticised the lack of seriousness with which the arts are treated in Ghana.

“I feel like in Ghana, the arts are really not taken seriously. Especially by our lawmakers. They see it as just entertainment,” she added.

Ama warned that unless decisive action is taken to clamp down on piracy and enforce copyright laws, the film industry will continue to suffer.

“People say that the Ghanaian movie industry is dead and that it’s not going anywhere. But when people have been investing their own money, not only are you not supporting them, but you’re killing the industry by pirating it. We’re our own worst enemies.

“So, until something is done, we will talk about it every two or three months, and they’ll keep doing it,” she said.
