The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has argued that the management of the Tema Port and the Electricity of Ghana (ECG) must be held liable for the missing containers belonging to the ECG.
This comes in the wake of revelations that over 1,300 ECG containers filled with essential equipment have gone missing at the Tema Port.
During a tour of aluminium smelting facilities in Shai-Osudoku on Friday, March 28, authorities discovered several coils of stolen ECG cables, which were components of the missing containers, melted into blocks and further processed into aluminium rods for export.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, March 28, Mahama Ayariga insisted offenders must be dealt with.
“Mr. Speaker, this country must change. I’m happy that the minister [Energy and Green Transition] has promised to go to the root of this matter, and he has the full support of this House to hold all those who were involved in this exercise accountable, from the leadership of ECG to the leadership of the Tema Port.
“And those who specifically stole the containers out of the port should also be held accountable. The companies that, over the years, have been exporting aluminium products. We need to investigate them, where have they been sourcing their aluminum products. the Majority Leader asserted.

Gold prices surge past $3,100 amid economic and geopolitical concerns

Business News
Gold prices soared to an all-time high on Monday, surpassing $3,100 per ounce for the first time, as investors sought refuge in the safe-haven asset amid growing economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions.
Reuters reports that spot gold hit a record-breaking $3,106.50 per ounce, continuing its upward trajectory after breaching the psychological $3,000 mark earlier this month. The precious metal has gained over 18 per cent since the start of the year, solidifying its position as a hedge against economic instability and inflationary pressures.
Market analysts attribute the rally to a combination of factors, including concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policies and broader geopolitical risks. Since assuming office, Trump has proposed a series of tariffs aimed at protecting American industries, including a 25% tariff on imported vehicles and auto parts, along with an additional 10% levy on all Chinese imports. A fresh set of reciprocal tariffs is expected to be announced on 2nd April.
“Tariff issues will continue driving (gold) prices higher until there is some finality to the tit-for-tat campaign,” noted Marex consultant Edward Meir.
The bullish outlook on gold has led major financial institutions to revise their price forecasts. Goldman Sachs now projects gold to hit $3,300 per ounce by year-end, up from its previous target of $3,100. Similarly, Bank of America has adjusted its forecast, expecting gold to trade at $3,063 per ounce in 2025 and $3,350 per ounce in 2026—significantly higher than earlier predictions of $2,750 and $2,625, respectively.
Analysts at OCBC remain optimistic about gold’s prospects, stating, “For now, gold’s appeal as a safe haven and inflation hedge has further strengthened in light of these geopolitical concerns and tariff uncertainty. We remain constructive on the outlook of gold amid ongoing global trade friction and uncertainty.”
Additionally, strong central bank demand and increased inflows into gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have provided further support for the metal’s remarkable rally. With global economic uncertainty persisting, many experts believe gold’s momentum is far from over.

Sean Combs, popularly known as P. Diddy or Puff Daddy
Embattled music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is facing yet another lawsuit, this time from a photographer who alleges he was sexually assaulted by the rapper.
The plaintiff, identified as John Doe, claims the incident occurred during a high-profile commercial shoot in 2022 or 2023. According to his lawsuit, filed in New York State Supreme Court on March 26, Combs invited him into his trailer under the pretense of discussing career opportunities.
Once inside, the lawsuit alleges, Combs unzipped his pants and told the photographer that if he performed satisfactory oral sex, it would make his “career take off.” The plaintiff claims he complied out of fear that his career would suffer if he refused.
When Combs allegedly deemed the act unsatisfactory, he threatened him with violence before sending him back to work, leaving him to process the trauma.
“No matter how many lawsuits are filed—especially by individuals who refuse to put their own names behind their claims—it won’t change the fact that Mr. Combs has never sexually assaulted or sex trafficked anyone—man or woman, adult or minor,” the statement reads. “We live in a world where anyone can file a lawsuit for any reason. Fortunately, a fair and impartial judicial process exists to find the truth, and Mr. Combs is confident he will prevail in court.”
The Bad Boy Records founder has faced multiple lawsuits from men, women, and minors accusing him of sexual misconduct, with allegations spanning decades. He has consistently denied all claims.
The latest lawsuit comes as Sean “Diddy” Combs remains incarcerated in Brooklyn following his indictment on federal charges of sex trafficking, racketeering, and forced labor.
However, he has pleaded not guilty as his trial is set to begin soon.
Following the announcement that the Vice President, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, is set to be flown abroad for medical treatment, a viral video of former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Prof Agyeman Badu Akosa, has resurfaced online.
In the video, he strongly opposes political appointees seeking medical care abroad.
Over the years, it has become common for politicians, including the President and senior government appointees, to seek medical treatment overseas, usually in Europe, whenever they are unwell.
Speaking in an interview in the widely shared video, the outspoken medical practitioner condemned this practice, urging politicians to equip medical facilities across the country to international standards so they can receive treatment locally.
“Why should any public officer, politician, or senior public official be allowed to travel outside to seek healthcare? Do they disrespect those of us who are medically qualified professionals in this country? If you look at the budget for external medical treatment, why are we not prepared to ensure that there are MRIs in every region, that there are CT scans?” he questioned.
Prof Badu Akosa further stated: “Whether you like it or not, healthcare is expensive, and when they go out there, they pay through their nostrils. So why can’t we develop our healthcare system here? If the President falls ill and is admitted to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital or the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), what will happen? Are there no competent doctors to take care of them? There are.”
On Sunday, March 30, 2024, the Presidency’s Communications Directorate released a statement confirming that the Vice President attended the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on Saturday following an unexpected health incident.
According to the statement, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Minister for Government Communications, medical experts have advised that the Vice President seek further treatment abroad to ensure her full recovery.
“We extend our best wishes to the Vice President for a speedy recovery,” the statement concluded.

Renowned journalist and lawyer, Samson Lardy Anyenini, has revealed what Sam George said on his show about the real estate business in Ghana.
The Ningo-Prampram MP, in an earlier interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile, alleged that some individuals use real estate as a cover-up to clean ‘dirty money’ obtained through illegal activities. According to him, people buy and sell properties among themselves to convert illegally acquired money into legitimate wealth.
Reacting to this, Samson Lardy Anyenini took to his Facebook page on Monday, 24th March, 2025 and shared a brief but thought-provoking message. He wrote:
“Pray – ‘Real Estate business in Ghana is money laundering’ – Sam George claims
“Yeah, he should have posted a caveat. What ought to be done to avoid the plenty washing through real estate?”
His reaction suggests that Sam George should have included a disclaimer or provided more evidence to support his claims. He also raised an important question about what measures should be put in place to stop the alleged money laundering in Ghana’s real estate sector.
Sam George’s statement has generated discussions on the transparency of real estate transactions in Ghana. Many people believe that the rapid rise of expensive properties, especially in prime areas of Accra, is suspicious. Some argue that the pricing of houses is unrealistic compared to the average income levels of Ghanaians.
Critics say that without proper financial tracking and strict regulations, real estate could become a major channel for corrupt politicians and businesspeople to hide illicit funds. Ghanaians are eager to see whether the government will take action to address the issue. Many believe that failing to regulate the sector properly could lead to further financial crimes and worsen corruption in the country.

The Upper East Region has discovered mineral resources, particularly gold, in seven out of its 15 District Assemblies and Municipalities.
This revelation was made by the Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, during a discussion with journalists at the proposed site for the Bolgatanga airport on Saturday, March 29.
The minister emphasized that the construction of the Bolgatanga Airport would greatly benefit miners and gold buyers by providing a more efficient way to transport their products across the country.
He also appealed to stakeholders for support in making the airport a reality.
“This region has suddenly discovered mineral deposits. Out of the 15 district assemblies, about seven have these deposits, which presents a significant business opportunity,” said Atanga.
He added, “Once mining begins, there will be a need for quicker transport to move the gold to national markets without the risk of armed robberies. We need to accelerate efforts to improve infrastructure. Upper East is a gateway to Burkina Faso and Togo, and our airport will be a valuable asset.”

A presidential candidate hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ken Agyapong, has rendered an unqualified apology to anyone who feels that he has offended them.
He has, in turn, forgiven any party member who has offended him in any way.
Speaking at the TESCON-KNUST General Meeting and Freshers’ Orientation on Sunday, March 30, 2025, in Kumasi, the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central preached unity in the NPP as the party reorganizes itself and works to wrest power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 general elections.
“Without unity, even if you bring Jesus Christ to lead NPP, we will lose. So our cardinal focus should be unity. In politics, we offend each other; let us put it behind us. The only people who become better in society are those who are able to forgive friends and brothers who offend them. Anybody who feels that I have offended them, I apologize. Anybody who feels they have offended me, I have forgiven them.
“We need to come together and become one formidable force that is ready to fight. It is not going to be easy in 2028; it is going to be tough. But with unity, I assure you that we have the men. We will gather them and put them together, and there will be a showdown. So, do not be despaired—have hope and confidence that what any political party has done to come to power, NPP can do it too, and we are definitely coming back.”
The NPP, which was the incumbent party, was defeated by the NDC in the 2024 general election.
The NDC’s presidential candidate, John Mahama, polled 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55%, while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who was the NPP flagbearer and incumbent Vice President, secured 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.

Head of GUTA’s Business and Economic Bureau, Charles Kusi Appiah Kubi
The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has strongly opposed the recent increase in the policy rate by the Bank of Ghana, warning that it will worsen the cost of doing business and negatively impact the economy.
According to a statement signed by the Head of GUTA’s Business and Economic Bureau, Charles Kusi Appiah Kubi, any increase in the policy rate directly influences lending rates, leading to higher interest rates from commercial banks. The association argues that this will add to the financial burden businesses are already struggling with.
“We are already saddled with high interest rates, which continue to increase the cost of production and doing business in Ghana. The question is, why does the central bank, through its monetary policy, choose to increase the policy rate at this time?” he queried.
The statement also highlighted the need for careful examination of key economic indicators such as Treasury bill rates, inflation rates, and policy rates.
GUTA noted that while Treasury bill rates are declining due to the government’s efforts to consolidate fiscal expenditure and reduce borrowing, inflation remains high, raising concerns about the effectiveness of monetary policy interventions.
“The reduction in Treasury bill rates should have had a positive impact on inflation and policy rates, but that is not what we are seeing. Instead, businesses are facing increased economic challenges,” Kubi added.
GUTA further cautioned that the policy rate hike could worsen liquidity challenges for commercial banks, as non-performing loans (NPLs) continue to rise. The association warned that this could make banks reluctant to lend to businesses, further stifling economic growth.
“The moment you try to control inflation through demand-pull measures, you risk driving inflation up instead. Our inflation is primarily cost-push, driven by high consumption taxes and borrowing costs. A better approach would be to reform the VAT system to reduce tax rates, which could lower the prices of goods and support disinflation,” Kubi suggested.
GUTA proposed alternative measures for tackling inflation without harming businesses, including:
Adjusting Treasury bill interest rates upwards to attract investment and mop up excess liquidity.
Raising capital through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to finance capital expenditure instead of relying solely on borrowing.
Strengthening the domestic bond market to provide long-term investment opportunities.
The association urged the government and the Bank of Ghana to adopt a more calculated strategy that balances fiscal and monetary policies without worsening the already challenging business environment.
“We must be tactful and circumspect. Any policy intervention aimed at mopping up excess liquidity and controlling inflation should not further burden businesses, as this could have severe economic ramifications,” Kubi concluded.
Asante Kotoko secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over True Democracy
Asante Kotoko secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over True Democracy at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday, sealing their place in the MTN FA Cup semifinals.
The Porcupine Warriors got off to a promising start, taking the lead in the 13th minute through Saaka Dauda. The forward capitalized on a quick throw-in and fired home to put Kotoko ahead.
Kotoko had a golden opportunity to double their lead in the 38th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Kwame Opoku was brought down in the box. However, Justice Blay failed to convert, striking the post and keeping True Democracy in the game.
The miss proved costly as True Democracy found an equalizer in the 61st minute. A free-kick from Botchway took a wicked deflection off the wall, wrong-footing goalkeeper Mohammed Camara and finding the net.
Just when the game seemed headed for a penalty shootout, Kwame Opoku stepped up with a dramatic stoppage-time winner in the 93rd minute to seal the victory for Kotoko.
Kotoko will now face Berekum Chelsea in the semifinals, with the winner set to meet either Attram De Visser or Golden Kick in the final.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced the cancellation of deals to sell Ghana’s diplomatic properties in Nigeria and Zambia.
According to him, this deal was initiated under the watch of the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government.
He indicated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has the full backing of President John Dramani Mahama in the cancelation of these deals.
Former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Amansie South, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, popularly known as Kwame Poku CID, has criticized the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dominic Ayine, for his approach in publicizing ongoing corruption investigations involving officials of the previous government.
On Monday, March 24, Mr. Ayine held a press briefing to update the public on various cases his office is handling, including the National Service Scheme scandal and a $7 million cyber defense system contract.
Regarding the cyber defense system contract, Mr. Ayine alleged that the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahene, misappropriated state funds for personal gain and to finance his wife’s luxurious lifestyle.
“In his capacity as Director of the National Signals Bureau, Mr. Adu-Boahene on January 30, 2020, signed a contract on behalf of the Government of Ghana and the National Security on one hand and, on the other hand, an Israeli company named RLC Holdings Limited. The contract was for the purchase of cyber defense system software at a price of $7 million,” Mr. Ayine stated.
He further explained, “On February 6, 2020, he then transferred an initial amount of GH¢27,100,000 from the National Signals Bureau account at Fidelity Bank to a private BNC account at UMB. Official documentation on the transfer reveals that the amount was for the payment of cyber defense system software. He transferred the money to his private company.”
However, during a discussion on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ morning show, former DCE Opoku Gyamfi took issue with the Attorney-General’s approach, urging him to refrain from making public accusations before cases are fully substantiated.
He criticized the press conference method, arguing that it could unduly tarnish reputations. “The Attorney-General should desist from using this approach, where he levels unsubstantiated accusations against individuals,” Mr. Opoku Gyamfi remarked.
The debate over the public disclosure of corruption investigations remains a contentious issue, with some arguing that transparency fosters accountability, while others contend that premature allegations can undermine the integrity of legal proceedings.

Research, especially the kind that touches on consumer health has always been on my heart for obvious reasons. Having had the benefit of working with a manufacturing company in my previous life, I have valued and come to appreciate the contribution of scientific research which drives innovation, meeting consumer needs with tailored products, brand development which translates into credibility, respect and goodwill.
One has come to appreciate that nations and industrial concerns that invest in research tend to be progressive in their approach to development.
Thanks to research, one gets better informed about lifestyles and life choices. For this reason, whenever I go shopping, I spend time in supermarkets checking on leads gathered from research by scrutinising labels before selecting my items. The same goes for prescriptions and supplements.
It is with this keen interest that my curiosity was piqued with the recent tomato paste research by food research scientists from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, which made some headlines late in February this year.
Research
The research finding which was published in the International Journal of Food Science and which was primarily aimed at assessing the quality of tomato concentrates on the Ghanaian market drew consumer minds to foods one loves to prepare using tomato paste.
While the study in question confirmed that the eight different brands of tomato paste used in the study were in conformity to the standard labelling and quality requirements, on the other hand, however, they failed to meet the recommended range of twenty four percent of natural tomato content.
The disappointing news in the report, however, is that two of the tested brands had traces of the banned substance, Erythrosine, which is also known as “Number 3”. Those two brands were also found to have used a larger quantity of starch, much beyond the required specification.
Counter
While one was pondering over the research finding and wondering which the two unnamed “culprits” were on the market, the regulator, Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) quickly came out with their version, maybe a counter to the research finding.
According to the FDA, knowing the health dangers of Red Dye Number 3, the Authority does not permit the substance to be used in the production of tomato paste. Additionally, the FDA said they did not allow starch in tomato paste production.
To back their assertion, therefore, the Authority issued a public statement pointing to the fact that as far back as 2015, the Authority played a pivotal role in ensuring that Red Dye 3, a synthetic colour was banned in tomato products in Ghana. I guess one can rightly assume tomato products include tomato paste.
If that is so, then, there seems to be some confusion here in the minds of consumers who read the scientific research on tomato paste and what FDA is saying about the regulation on the “Number 3” substance.
Consumer
Where the consumer could be in limbo here is why despite the fact that the substance had been banned by the FDA in tomato paste production, yet some “culprits” are still using it in their production to the detriment of consumer health, as stated in the report by the KNUST Food Science and Technology research led by Dr. Abena Boakye and which has now taken a page in the International Journal of Food Science.
Most worrying is that the FDA claim in its media statement that as far back as 2018, only three tomato paste products and 10 tomato mix products were registered by them.
Seven years later, the country has as many as 40 registered tomato paste products and 62 registered tomato mix products on the market.
Interestingly, the FDA’s media statement has made it clear that all the products complied with the country’s standards, and they do undergo rigorous evaluation and testing before approval. Here, the Authority makes a clear distinction between tomato paste and tomato mix with different compositions.
So, who is right, and whose version should the consumer go by? Should one go the path of the scientific research claiming that two of the eight brands they tested in our market have the banned substance which is injurous to consumer health or the FDA claim that all the tomato paste products on our market have been tested, they undergo rigorous evaluation and testing and therefore comply with the country’s standards before approval.
The poor consumer needs clarity and reassurance, going forward. Can the KNUST Food Science research, which is now out there in the international space, name the two brands so consumers may be aware?
We need someone to come to our aid with clear and better particulars in this crucial food matter which affects one’s health.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, has announced that the institution’s staff will now be responsible for issuing Dealer (DV) plates at the ports. This move is aimed at streamlining the process, ensuring accountability, and enhancing efficiency in vehicle registration.
Speaking at a recent event, Kotey emphasized that the new measure will eliminate third-party involvement in the issuance of DV plates. Previously, some external agents played a role in distributing these plates, raising concerns about potential irregularities. With the DVLA taking direct control, the process is expected to be more transparent and regulated.
“The issuance of DV plates at the ports will now be handled exclusively by our staff to improve efficiency and eliminate any loopholes that may have existed in the past,” Kotey stated.
The DV plates, which are temporary registration numbers assigned to newly imported vehicles, allow dealers to move vehicles legally before full registration. By centralizing the issuance within the DVLA, the agency seeks to ensure that all vehicles receive proper documentation from the outset, reducing fraudulent activities associated with unregistered vehicles on the roads.
No Stickers for DP Plates
In addition to the DV plate reforms, Kotey clarified that DP plates, which are used for demonstration purposes by dealerships, will not be replaced with stickers, contrary to previous speculation. Instead, the existing system will remain in place, ensuring that vehicle dealers continue to use physical DP plates rather than adhesive stickers.
“The current DP plate system remains unchanged. There will be no introduction of stickers as a replacement,” he affirmed.
The DP plates allow vehicle dealers to lawfully test-drive or showcase vehicles before sale. Maintaining this system, rather than switching to stickers, ensures that identification remains visible and practical for law enforcement officers and prospective buyers.
Enhancing Regulation and Security
These changes reflect the DVLA’s commitment to improving regulation within the automotive industry. By taking full charge of DV plate issuance, the authority aims to prevent unauthorized use and streamline vehicle registration processes. Meanwhile, retaining the traditional DP plate system ensures consistency for dealers and buyers alike.
With these reforms, the DVLA seeks to enhance road safety, curb illegal vehicle activities, and uphold its mandate of ensuring proper vehicle registration and documentation.

According to Blewett, the company’s growth was driven by significant strides in its digital transformation journey and the launch of innovative services like mobile financial services and digital entertainment.
Ishmael Yamson, MTN Ghana’s Board Chairman, emphasized the company’s efforts in strengthening its governance framework, ensuring transparency and accountability. “We’ve achieved notable progress in our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable practices and corporate responsibility.”
Despite the global economy’s mixed performance, MTN Ghana remained focused on its strategic objectives. The company showcased exceptional resilience, achieving a remarkable 34.5% year-on-year growth in service revenue amidst Ghana’s challenging macroeconomic environment.

Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Ken Ohene Agyapong, has rendered an unqualified apology on behalf of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) – the student wing of the party – for not treating them well.
Speaking at the TESCON-KNUST General Meeting and Freshers’ Orientation on Sunday, March 30, 2025, the former presidential candidate aspirant pledged the party’s commitment to taking better care of TESCON going forward.
“I was in Kintampo last month, and the students lamented how the NPP treated TESCON when we were in power. I pleaded with them then, and I am doing the same here. On behalf of the NPP, I sincerely apologize for whatever we did to TESCON. Despite everything, I see the spirit in you that shows you belong to the NPP.”
The business mogul and politician further encouraged TESCON members not to lose hope or defect to a party currently in power but to remain in the NPP and work hard to bring it back to government.
“To the freshers present, you have seen young men who were TESCON members and the positions they held after school. It is an indication that the NPP is still a good political party and the only party that can save Ghana’s economy.
“So, to the freshers, I want to inspire you that all is not lost. Do not think that just because we are in opposition, you should join the party in power. I assure you, they have nothing to offer you. Stay where you are, have confidence. This is not the first time we’ve been in opposition, and we have always come back stronger. So I am pleading with you—nobody should lose hope and decide to leave TESCON-NPP to join TEIN or any other political fraternity.”
TESCON (Tertiary Students Confederacy) is the student wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of Ghana, founded on January 8, 2000.
It was inaugurated by the second President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor. Since its formation, TESCON has been one of the most important wings of the NPP, driving student political activism and grassroots mobilization.

Acting MD of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company, Sammy Gyamfi,
The Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company, Sammy Gyamfi, has dismissed claims that the structure of the newly established Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) could lead to conflicts of interest.
In a social media post on X, Sammy Gyamfi clarified that GoldBod is neither a regulator nor a commercial competitor but a state monopoly responsible for trading and exporting gold.
He explained that its regulatory role is limited to ensuring compliance by licensed service providers and not the broader market.
“The GoldBod is simply a monopoly in the trading and export of gold… The regulatory function of the GoldBod relates only to its own licensed agents and not to competitors,” he stated.
He stressed that GoldBod would not regulate competitors but only its approved agents, making conflict of interest concerns unfounded.
Mr. Gyamfi reiterated that gold hoarding is illegal, citing Clause 68(1) of the GoldBod Bill, which prohibits individuals from hoarding gold without lawful authorization. He noted that this provision aims to prevent unfair market practices, including artificial scarcity and price manipulation by licensed agents entrusted with funds to procure gold for GoldBod.
On Friday, March 28, 2025, Parliament passed the Ghana Gold Board Bill 2025 into law, granting GoldBod exclusive rights over gold exports from the small-scale mining sector.
This means licensed traders and bullion dealers can no longer export gold independently.
GoldBod, established under the Ministry of Finance, is a key campaign promise by President John Dramani Mahama aimed at enhancing Ghana’s gold trade and strengthening the local economy.

I have been in parliament since 1993 and i have not seen this style of debate before – Alban Bagbin
News Hub Creator7h
Speaker, Alban Bagbin while speaking during a recent parliamentary sitting revealed that, he has been in parliament since 1993 and the style of debate he’s seeing now is something he have never seen before.
“In his Words”
“Ghanaians witnessed a new tone and style of debate in parliament, I have been here since January, 1993 and I know what I am talking about. But I want to caution the leaders against the dangers of political polarization you know, fragmentation of the institution and threat to national security. This could push it into the hands of the executive or the judiciary
if we continue to go the way we are going, we will be subsuming ourselves under the executive or the judiciary, so I want to urge each and everyone of us to try as much as possible to change because the repercussion which I just told you is definitely not a good one”.
“Or if we are unable to resolve your own differences, others will resolve it for you and that will erode the public trust and confidence in the institution of parliament. So like I said, I have been in parliament since January 1993 and the type of debate that I have witnessed this year is something that I have never seen before. I know it’s not going to be easy for us but I want us to adjust our ways you know, I want us to bring our tone down a little bit”, Speaker, Alban Bagbin said.

In a ruling that has sparked controversy, the Enchi District Court has ordered the release of two excavators and other mining equipment seized from suspected illegal miners operating in the Boin River Forest Reserve in the Western North Region. The court’s decision, issued on March 28, 2025, has raised concerns about the ongoing fight against illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
The case, The Republic v. Wisdom Amuzu & Others, involved the arrest of four individuals by the Forestry Commission and the Enchi Police on March 23, 2025. The suspects were allegedly engaged in illegal mining within the forest reserve, leading to the confiscation of their excavators and other equipment. Following their arrest, the suspects were processed for court, and their equipment was seized in accordance with anti-galamsey laws.
However, the court not only granted bail to the accused persons but also ordered the Forestry Commission to release the excavators to them. The ruling further directed that the suspects be allowed to relocate the machines to a location of their choice, with the process being supervised by the Enchi District Police Commander or his representatives. The court gave a three-day deadline for the execution of this order.
Critics argue that this ruling directly undermines Ghana’s Forest Protection Act of 1974, which imposes severe restrictions on mining activities within protected forests. Given the well-documented devastation caused by illegal mining in the Western North Region, the decision has been described as a setback to Ghana’s fight against environmental degradation.
Environmental activists, security experts, and concerned citizens have expressed outrage, warning that the ruling sets a dangerous precedent. Many believe that such decisions weaken law enforcement efforts and encourage illegal miners to operate with impunity, knowing they can reclaim their equipment even after being caught.
With Ghana’s forests and water bodies already under severe threat from illegal mining, stakeholders are calling for a review of the ruling and urging the government to take stronger action against those who violate environmental laws. It remains to be seen whether the state will appeal the decision or introduce new legal measures to prevent a recurrence of similar cases that could further jeopardize the country’s natural resources.

With funding from the Mastercard Foundation, the five-year project has delivered over US$100 million in SME lending solutions and business support to over 5,000 enterprises, with a focus on women-led businesses, agribusiness, and rural entrepreneurs.
The event featured a panel discussion with loan beneficiaries, data-led presentations, and strategic discussions on sustainability and future directions.

Officials have assured the public of swift legal action against those involved, emphasizing the government’s commitment to safeguarding critical national assets. Meanwhile, further inquiries are underway to uncover the full extent of the operation and possible accomplices.

These include advancing innovative financial assistance to Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), deploying robotics, introducing local languages in operations, and enhancing digital financial offerings.
Mr Opuni said this at a media engagement on Wednesday to project these initiatives and pledge the bank’s commitment to supporting the creative arts sector through the ‘Orange Inspire’ programme.
“We believe the creative industry always gets left out, so this year we are launching the Orange Inspire, which will focus on the creative sector, and we are going to be offering mentorship, funding and grants to the creative sector,” he said.
Mr Opuni indicated that the bank would use local languages to enhance its financial literacy and awareness programmes, making Ghanaians understand the importance of savings and investments as well as business and personal growth.

He mentioned the Fidelity Young Entrepreneurs Fund, which provided funding to easily scalable businesses that were solving societal problems, and utilising climate-smart adaptation or mitigation change processes in their activities.
In support of the continent’s growth and intra-trade agenda, Mr Opuni said the Bank would leverage the experience with Malaysia to deepen regional partnerships with other financial institutions to offer digital services to customers.
He expressed confidence in Ghana’s financial institutions and businesses in driving the country’s economic transformation and called on the media to ensure that stories and discussions focused on support in that direction.
He cautioned against uninformed stories and misinformation, which tended to jeopardise the gains made over the years by Ghanaians.
Mr Opuni called on the Government to provide an enabling environment for financial institutions to support private sector growth, enabling them to lead the implementation of key policies to spur economic growth and create jobs.

Talented Ghanaian teenager, Clinton Duodu, scored with a stunning finish on Saturday, March 29, helping Apollon to earn a point from their clash against APOEL in the Cypriot top-flight league.
The former Bechem United prodigy started the Week 28 encounter for his team and operated in the attack.
Just four minutes into the first half, Clinton Duodu ran behind the defense of APOEL to latch onto a long pass before lobbing the goalkeeper to find the back of the net.
The early equaliser put his team in control, setting the tone for the visitors to dominate the first half.
Unfortunately, Apollon failed to take advantage and even wasted a penalty kick in the 38th minute when Quentin Boisgard misfired from 12 yards in the 38th minute.
After recess, APOEL came into the game strongly and put up a fight to avoid a defeat.
The efforts of the team paid off in the 56th minute, with Marius Corbu scoring to force the match to end in a 1-1 draw.
Following his goal on Saturday, Clinton Duodu has now scored two goals and has three assists to his name after making 13 appearances in the Cypriot First Division.
Highlife legend Paulina Oduro has clarified recent reports suggesting that she claimed Kofi Kinaata is “bigger” than the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).
Speaking on ShowBiz Today on Empire 102.7 FM, she dismissed the misrepresentation of her words and called on bloggers to report accurately.
“Oh, Chaley! I think these bloggers should get their facts right,” she stated. “What I actually said was that it’s not a big deal.
“Kofi is loved all over Ghana; he’s a big artiste and should not be worried about whether he’s nominated or not.
“TGMA has been around for a long time; Kofi can never be bigger than that show. But as an artiste, he is big!”
The misunderstanding arose after Kofi Kinaata was surprisingly left out of the Artiste of the Year category for the 26th TGMA, despite multiple nominations fueled by the success of his Kofi oo Kofi EP.
Disappointed fans voiced their frustration, and Paulina Oduro, in encouraging the artist, was misquoted by some blogs, leading to online backlash.
With this clarification, she hopes to put the issue to rest, emphasizing that while Kinaata is undoubtedly a major artist, the TGMA remains an important institution in Ghana’s music industry.
Government is to develop a data exchange hub, a centralised platform to unify all data sources to serve as the backbone of the country’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) drive, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mr Samuel Nartey George, has disclosed.
According to him the development of the data exchange hub would not only help address the issue of data fragmentation across various institutions in the country, but would also help improve the economy.
The Minister disclosed this in a speech read on his behalf by the Director General of the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT, Dr Collins Yeboah-Afari, at the opening of the maiden Ghana AI Summit and Awards in Accra yesterday.
Dubbed the Ghana AI Summit and Awards 2025, the event was under the theme, “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development: Hype or Reality?” and is organised by Knowledge Innovations in collaboration with Deloitte Ghana.
It brought together decision-makers in the public, private, and non-profit sectors to discuss and explore AI-driven solutions tailored to Africa’s development needs.
The Minister explained that the development of the data exchange hub would help establish a strong foundation for AI-driven innovation across industries and enhance data accessibility.
He said government was focused on digitising at least 100 billion physical records and ensuring a structured, anonymised, and protected data that aligned with global data governance framework over the next four years.
In addition, Mr George said the government was developing home-grown AI language models that would be tailored within the African context.
“The goal is to create AI systems that understand and communicate in Ghana’s local languages, ensuring technology sets all citizens, not just those who speak English,” the Minister said.
He said the government was committed to making Ghana Africa’s leading hope for artificial intelligence by the end of its tenure.
For his part, the Country Managing Partner, Deloitte, Dr Daniel Kwadwo Owusu, said that his outfit was committed to the use of AI technologies to help clients navigate complex and difficult challenges of today’s economy.
He therefore urged the country to embrace the concept of AI and see it as a powerful tool that could help improve and transform her economy.
The Director of Knowledge Innovations and Chairman of the Summit, Dr Kwame Ahiabeuu, in his opening remarks, announced the creation of a Ghana AI Council to drive AI from both the public and private sector.
Mz Nana, a Ghanaian-born gospel singer based in the United States, is making waves in the gospel music community with an upcoming collaboration and a free concert that has fans buzzing with excitement.
Known in real life as Nana Yaa Otchere, the winner of the Ghana Music Awards (GMA) USA 2024 Gospel Artiste of the Year (US-based) is poised to elevate her ministry and music career to new heights, blending her soul-stirring melodies with a fresh, surprising twist.
Mz Nana, the founder of Nana Yaa Otchere Ministries, has captured the hearts of gospel lovers worldwide. She hinted at her forthcoming projects during a recent interview following her donation of sewing machines and hair dryers to several graduates in Asamankese.
When asked about her upcoming projects, she smiled and said, “I am working on something big—something no one will see coming. It’s a collaboration that will bridge worlds and bring a new sound to gospel music. Stay tuned!”
While she remained tight-lipped about the details, sources close to the artist suggest that Mz Nana may be teaming up with a major African artiste.
Such a collaboration would be a groundbreaking moment for Ghanaian gospel music, merging Mz Nana’s heartfelt, Twi-infused worship style with that of a global gospel powerhouse.
Adding to the excitement, Mz Nana announced plans for a free concert in Accra later this year, promising a “special event that will bring the community together in worship and celebration.”
The event, which she hinted will take place at a yet-to-be-disclosed venue, is expected to draw thousands of fans eager to experience her dynamic stage presence and spirit-filled performances.
“I want to give back to my people in Ghana,” she shared. “This concert will be a gift—a night of praise, healing, and joy, completely free for all who come.”
The announcement has already sparked a flurry of engagement on social media, with fans expressing their anticipation and speculating about whether the mystery collaborator might make a surprise appearance at the event.
Mz Nana’s journey in gospel music began at a young age in Accra, where she sang at Sunday schools and youth conventions at the Church of Pentecost with her grandmother.
Her recent achievements, including her 2024 GMA USA win and her nomination for Diaspora Gospel Artiste of the Year at the 2023 Ghana Music Awards Europe, have solidified her status as a beacon of inspiration in the gospel community.
Her commitment to uplifting others, both through her music and philanthropy, continues to resonate deeply, as seen in her recent efforts to empower Asamankese graduates with tools for self-sufficiency.
As the buzz around her upcoming collaboration and free concert grows, Mz Nana remains focused on her mission to inspire and uplift others through music.
The NDC youth have rejected attempt to endorse galamsey-linked MCE aspirant
Following the announcement of the first batch of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), leading constituency executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ahafo-Ano North Municipality have held a press conference appealing to President John Dramani Mahama to appoint Richmond Aboakye Agyemang as the next Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).
They praised Mr. Agyemang, expressing confidence in his leadership. However, the Concerned NDC Youth of Ahafo-Ano North have strongly refuted these claims, exposing what they describe as the ulterior motives behind the executives’ endorsement.
According to them, these NDC constituency executives are pushing for Mr. Agyemang’s appointment to further their illegal mining (galamsey) operations, which have been devastating the lands and water bodies of the municipality.
Previous reports have provided concrete evidence that these same party executives have deep-rooted interests in illegal mining. Their attempt to lobby for Mr. Agyemang’s appointment as MCE, the youth argue, is a desperate move to sustain their illicit activities, directly contradicting President Mahama’s commitment to eradicating galamsey in the country.
The youth contend that the press conference organized by the constituency executives is a deceptive ploy to mislead the public and the presidency into nominating an MCE aspirant whose primary interest is the continuation of galamsey.
Communities such as Subriso, Asikam, and Mfante have suffered severe environmental damage due to illegal mining. Polluted water bodies, destroyed cocoa farmlands, and declining economic opportunities have left the local youth with no choice but to resist any attempt to appoint an MCE who will perpetuate these heinous crimes against the people of Ahafo-Ano North.
Speaking on behalf of the Concerned Youth, a leading advocate, Kwabena Agyepong, stated, “We will not allow corrupt individuals to manipulate the system for their personal gain at the expense of our future.
Our lands and livelihoods are at stake. The NDC constituency executives cannot force an MCE on us who has no intention of fighting galamsey. We stand firmly against their deception.”
Unlike his opponent, Mr. Richard Merz, a direct rival for the MCE position, has been a vocal advocate against illegal mining. His commitment to restoring the environment, ensuring maximum security, engaging stakeholders effectively, and promoting sustainable development has earned him widespread support from the people of Ahafo-Ano North.
The NDC youth firmly believe that only Mr. Richard Merz can lead the municipality in the right direction, ensuring that illegal mining is completely eradicated.
As tensions rise ahead of a planned press conference by the Concerned NDC Youth on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, they are urging President Mahama and the general public to disregard the false narratives being pushed by the NDC constituency executives.
They maintain that the people of Ahafo-Ano North deserve an MCE who will prioritize their well-being and development over corrupt, self-serving interests.
The youth have vowed to intensify their resistance against any political interference aimed at endorsing candidates linked to galamsey. They are calling on traditional authorities, civil society organizations, and government agencies to take a firm stand against illegal mining and ensure that the next MCE truly represents the interests of the people.
With their unwavering stance, the Concerned Youth of Ahafo-Ano North have sent a clear message: they refuse to be manipulated by corrupt political actors and will fight to protect their lands, resources, and future.
The decision now rests with the presidency, but the people have spoken—Mr. Richard Merz is the only choice for a sustainable and prosperous Ahafo-Ano North.
Golden Kick have secured a historic spot in the semifinals of the MTN FA Cup for the first time
Golden Kick have secured a historic spot in the semifinals of the MTN FA Cup for the first time after eliminating Premier League side Karela United at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.
The Division One League side put up a resilient performance, holding Karela to a goalless draw in regulation time before edging them out 5-3 in a tense penalty shootout. Their victory extends an incredible run in the competition, proving their strength against top-flight opposition.
Golden Kick will now face fellow second-tier side Attram De Visser in the semifinals. Attram De Visser also made history on Saturday, overcoming PAC Academy to book their place in the last four.
With two Division One League clubs making it this far, this year’s MTN FA Cup is shaping up to be an exciting competition, offering the chance for an unexpected finalist. Both sides will be eager to continue their dream run and fight for a place in the grand finale.
A federal judge in Massachusetts on Friday temporarily barred the deportation of a Turkish doctoral student at Tufts University, who voiced support for Palestinians in Israel’s war in Gaza and was detained by U.S. immigration officials this week.
Rumeysa Ozturk, 30, was taken into custody by U.S. immigration authorities near her Massachusetts home on Tuesday, according to a video showing the arrest by masked federal agents. U.S. officials revoked her visa.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has accused Ozturk, without providing evidence, of “engaging in activities in support of Hamas,” a group which the U.S. government categorizes as a “foreign terrorist organization.”
Oncu Keceli, a spokesperson for Turkey’s foreign ministry, said efforts to secure Ozturk’s release continued, adding consular and legal support was being provided by Turkish diplomatic missions in the U.S.
“Our Houston Consul General visited our citizen in the center where she is being held in Louisiana on March 28. Our citizen’s requests and demands have been forwarded to local authorities and her lawyer,” Keceli said in a post on X.
Ozturk’s arrest came a year after she co-authored an opinion piece, opens new tab in Tufts’ student newspaper criticizing the university’s response to calls by students to divest from companies with ties to Israel and to “acknowledge the Palestinian genocide.”
A lawyer soon after sued to secure her release, and on Friday, the American Civil Liberties Union joined her legal defense team, filing a revised lawsuit, opens new tab saying her detention violates her rights to free speech and due process.
Despite a Tuesday night order requiring the PhD student and Fulbright Scholar not to be moved out of Massachusetts without 48 hours’ notice, she is now in Louisiana.
In Friday’s order, opens new tab, U.S. District Judge Denise Casper in Boston said that to provide time to resolve whether her court retained jurisdiction over the case, she was barring Ozturk’s deportation temporarily.
She ordered the Trump administration to respond to Ozturk’s complaint by Tuesday.
Mahsa Khanbabai, a lawyer for Ozturk, called the decision “a first step in getting Rumeysa released and back home to Boston so she can continue her studies.”
The DHS had no immediate comment.
President Donald Trump has pledged to deport foreign pro-Palestinian protesters and has accused them of supporting Hamas, being antisemitic and posing foreign policy hurdles.
Protesters, including some Jewish groups, say the Trump administration conflates their criticism of Israel’s assault on Gaza and their advocacy for Palestinian rights with antisemitism and support for Hamas.
Several students and protesters have had their visas revoked by the Trump administration, which says it may have revoked over 300 visas.

Former Chairman of Public Accounts Committee, James Klutse Avedzi [Credit: Parliament of Ghana via Facebook]
The long-dormant Sky Train scandal is finally gaining traction as the Attorney General takes steps to act on the recommendations of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
James Klutse Avedzi, Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission and former PAC chairman, has revealed the years of bureaucratic delay that allowed those implicated in the project to go unpunished.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition, Avedzi detailed how the committee fought for accountability in the Sky Train debacle, only for its recommendations to be stalled at the executive level.
“One of the issues that we have recommended is the Sky Train issue,” Mr Avedzi disclosed.
“If you heard the Attorney General at his recent press conference, he said action is being taken on the committee’s recommendation. We really recommended that people should be prosecuted, and fortunately, that is coming up now.”
The Sky Train project, once touted as a revolutionary transportation initiative for Ghana, ended up as a financial nightmare.
Millions of dollars were spent on feasibility studies and consultancy fees, yet not a single track was laid.
PAC’s investigation uncovered alarming financial irregularities and procurement violations, leading to strong recommendations for prosecution. But those recommendations, according to Mr Avedzi, hit a wall.
“Ghanaians think that the committee has the power to punish people on the spot, but we do not. The committee doesn’t have that power to punish. You can only recommend,” he explained.
“Before I became chairman, the previous chairman would bring reports to the plenary, we would adopt them, and then implementation would become a problem. It would be left there.
“Nothing would be done about it. But I decided that when people flout the procurement law, we will recommend them for prosecution.”
Despite PAC’s efforts, action on the Sky Train scandal was delayed due to a breakdown in communication between Parliament and the Attorney General’s office.
James Klutse Avedzi recounted how a major loophole in the system allowed the Attorney General to claim he had never received official instructions to act on PAC’s findings.
“We recommended a number of people, I cannot even count them, to the Attorney General to prosecute them. At a point, the Attorney General told the committee that there was no communication from Parliament to him that these are the people who have been recommended for prosecution,” he said.
“So I had to do whatever I could to ensure that the Clerk of Parliament communicated the decisions of the plenary to him, which he did eventually. But that took almost two years.”
Even after this communication was finally made, no action was taken against those implicated in the scandal.
“Now it’s left with the Attorney General to prosecute the people, but nothing has been done about that,” Mr Avedzi lamented.
The inertia in prosecuting offenders, he noted, has emboldened corrupt officials who exploit the system, knowing that exposure by PAC does not necessarily lead to punishment.
Mr Avedzi stressed that PAC’s findings are based on reports from the Auditor General, meaning that only cases officially audited make it to the committee’s desk.
“Our work as the Public Accounts Committee is the product of the Auditor General. So anything that is not covered in the Auditor General’s report doesn’t come to us. We don’t get to know about it.
“But if it is covered in that report, we get to know of it. We invite the people to appear before us, and when their explanations are convincing, we drop the matter. If not, we push it forward.”
The inefficiency in enforcing PAC’s recommendations is not unique to the Sky Train scandal.
Mr Avedzi pointed out that all of his committee reports have been adopted by Parliament, yet the implementation process remains a major bottleneck.
“I must say, 100% of my reports have always been adopted. Now it is left for the executive to implement the decisions of Parliament—that is, the recommendations of the Public Accounts Committee adopted by the plenary.
“But it goes back to the executive, and they fail to implement them. That is why I said the solution is to punish people. Whatever is recommended in a report to the plenary, the executive must ensure that it is implemented.
“People who need to be prosecuted must be prosecuted. If found guilty, they must be punished. That is the only way this will serve as a deterrent,” he said.
The Sky Train scandal serves as a glaring example of why corruption persists in Ghana, the Ketu North MP noted.
Mr Klutse Avedzi stated that the only real consequence for officials appearing before PAC is the public embarrassment of being interrogated on live television.
“People know that their only difficulty is appearing before the Public Accounts Committee. You come on television, your family and friends will see you being interrogated. Whether you provided good answers or not, that is what happens.
“They know that after that, the report goes back to the executive for implementation, and nothing happens. That is what we are lacking. If we are able to implement the report and punish people for wrongdoing, then those who think that, after the Public Accounts Committee hearing, nothing happens, will begin to change their position.”

Illegal mining has destroyed water bodies and farm lands
The Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association is calling for the immediate dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Martin Ayisi, over his alleged involvement in illegal mining, commonly referred to as “Galamsey.”
This demand comes as the government intensifies efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities in forest reserves.
In the Ashanti Region, which was once a safe haven for illegal miners and their armed thugs, the regional task force claims to have successfully secured the reserves and eradicated illegal mining activities there.
Speaking to Starr News, the President of the Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association, Michael Peprah, expressed outrage over Ayisi’s alleged links to illegal mining operations in forest reserves.
“The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission must be sacked immediately if the government is serious about tackling the Galamsey crisis,” Peprah said.
“These are the individuals responsible for issuing licenses in various offices. If we truly want to fight Galamsey, how can we launch a community mining scheme in forest reserves? Are we joking as a country? We claim to want to fight Galamsey, yet the very person who has exacerbated the issue is still in his position.”
Peprah pointed out that areas like Lake Bosomtwe are restricted, yet licenses continue to be granted in these zones, which should not be the case.
“According to mining laws, certain areas, including forest reserves, should be off-limits for small-scale mining. But people continue mining in these areas, and the Minerals Commission is to blame. If we are serious about solving this issue, this person must be removed immediately.”
Peprah also criticized the government’s failure to act, saying, “The government is trying to address the issue, but the very people responsible for the problem are still in their positions, collecting salaries while continuing to engage in illegal mining.”
For years, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has brought most scandalous corruption cases to light, questioning public officials on live television and making strong recommendations for prosecutions. Yet, nothing happens.
The same officials return to their offices, the same funds disappear, and the same cycle continues.
According to former PAC chairman and current Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, James Klutse Avedzi, the real problem is clear—the Executive branch is blocking the fight against corruption.
Mr Avedzi, who chaired PAC from 2017, has revealed the systematic failure that allows corruption to thrive.
“Ghanaians think that the committee has the power to punish people on the spot, but we do not. The committee doesn’t have that power to punish. We can only recommend.”
And recommend, they have.
“We recommended a number of people—I cannot even count them—to the Attorney General for prosecution.”
But after that, the process grinds to a halt.
The issue, according to Avedzi, is not with Parliament, but with the Executive. PAC’s work is based on the Auditor General’s reports, which document financial mismanagement and suspected corruption.
The committee investigates, interrogates officials, and submits reports to Parliament. “100% of my reports have always been adopted,” Mr Avedzi said.
“Now, it is left for the Executive to implement the decisions of Parliament.” That is where everything collapses.
One of the most striking examples is the Sky Train scandal, a case where millions were spent on a project that never materialised.
PAC recommended prosecutions, yet for years, nothing was done.
“If you heard the Attorney General at his recent press conference, he said action is finally being taken. We really recommended that people should be prosecuted, and fortunately, that is coming up now.”
But Mr Avedzi is not celebrating just yet. He has seen too many recommendations collect dust while officials remain untouched.
At one point, the Attorney General’s office claimed they had never received PAC’s list of officials for prosecution.
“The Attorney General told the committee that there was no communication from Parliament to him. So, I had to do whatever I could to ensure that the clerk of Parliament communicated the plenary’s decisions to him.”
It took two years before the communication finally went through. And after that? Still, nothing happened.
Mr Avedzi believes that corruption will never stop until officials are truly punished.
“If people who flout the procurement law are prosecuted and punished, it will serve as a deterrent. But right now, officials know that after facing PAC, nothing happens. That is why corruption continues.”
The problem is no longer about uncovering corruption—it’s about enforcement.
“The solution is simple: let’s punish the people. Whatever is recommended in a report should be implemented.”
Without this, he warns, the Public Accounts Committee will remain just another bureaucratic formality, exposing wrongdoing without any real impact.
“People appear before PAC, they answer questions on television, and their friends and family watch. But after that, the report goes to the Executive, and they don’t implement it. That is what we are lacking.”
Mr Avedzi said that unless the Executive acts, Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts will remain a public show without consequences.
“Officials know that after facing PAC, they will go back to their offices as if nothing happened. If we are serious about fighting corruption, that must change.”

The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has congratulated the entire Muslim community in Ghana on the successful completion of this year’s Ramadan and the
celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
In a press release signed by Rev. Dr. Cyril Fayose, the CCG acknowledged the significance of the Ramadan period, noting that it offered Muslim brothers and sisters an invaluable opportunity for closer communion with Allah and for prayers for themselves and others.
The Council highlighted the continuous efforts in building strong and cordial interfaith engagements with the Muslim community in Ghana.
“These collaborations focus not only on fostering peace and harmony but also on empowering both religious bodies to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development,” the statement said.
The statement recalled several collaborative initiatives, including the Faith in Alliance Ghana (FIGA) initiative, the Programme for Christian-Muslim Relations in Africa (PROCUMURA), the Ghana Conference for Religion and Peace (GCRP), and other interfaith platforms that facilitate meaningful engagements.
The CCG also noted the recent collaboration at the National Education Forum, where both Christian and Muslim representatives contributed their ideas towards shaping education in Ghana.
The Christian Council offered prayers for God’s blessings of long life and prosperity upon the National Chief Imam, the leaders of all other Muslim groups, and the entire Muslim community in Ghana.
They expressed hope that the blessings and spiritual closeness experienced by Muslims during Ramadan would empower them to continue contributing their quota to building a peaceful, harmonious, and progressive society for all Ghanaians.
The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has called on Muslims across Ghana to demonstrate the true values of Islam through their actions.
Delivering a special Ramadan message to Muslims on Sunday, March 30, he urged the Muslim community to be exemplary in their conduct, especially during the Eid celebrations, and to promote peace and unity in their neighborhoods.
“Let’s show what Islam stands for, not just in what we say, but in what we do and how we do it,” he emphasized.
The Minister encouraged Muslims to extend kindness to their neighbors, regardless of religious affiliation, and to ensure that their celebrations do not disturb the peace of others.
Reflecting on the significance of Ramadan, he stressed the importance of sacrifice, self-discipline, and compassion for the less fortunate.
He noted that the 30-day fasting period serves as a time for spiritual renewal, a moment to deepen faith, and an opportunity to give back to the community.
“During this holy month, we have denied ourselves food and comfort, but we have also given generously to those in need. Let’s not allow these acts of kindness to end with Ramadan.
Let’s continue to support our communities and promote unity among all Ghanaians,” he urged.
He also took the opportunity to pray for the souls of departed loved ones, including parents, religious leaders, and other community figures who have contributed to the growth and development of the country.
Furthermore, he expressed gratitude to Allah for His blessings upon the nation and for granting Ghanaians another year to witness the holy month.
The Minister extended special prayers for the leadership of Ghana, particularly former President John Dramani Mahama, wishing him wisdom and strength in his service to the nation.
On governance and development, he assured the public that every promise made by their leadership would be fulfilled with sincerity and dedication.
He called on the youth to take advantage of opportunities for growth and development and to uphold peace and unity at all times.
The Deputy Education Minister, Dr. Clement Apaak, has praised the Takoradi Technical University for embracing inclusivity in the delivery of Technical and Vocational Education Training.
The University had so far graduated 192 persons with hearing impairment.
Dr. Apaak said, “I must commend you for the unique work you are doing and the need for your sister institutions to emulate.”
The Deputy Minister for Education was speaking at the 25th Congregation of the Takoradi Technical University which saw more than 2000 students receiving honours in undergraduate and graduate programmes.
In all, 273 received first class honours, 1,812 second class upper, 264 with lower and two pass.
Dr Apaak mentioned that the 25th Congregation was not just a celebration of academic achievements, but a reaffirmation of the crucial role Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) played in Ghana’s socio-economic transformation.
He noted that the National Education Forum reinforced the government’s commitment to strengthening TVET as a driver of industrialization, job creation, and economic development, adding that one of the key outcomes of the forum was the urgent need to bridge the gap between TVET education and industry demands.
He noted the need to ensure that graduates were equipped with the relevant, hands-on skills required in today’s rapidly evolving job market.
Dr Apaak said the government had intensified efforts to align the TVET curriculum with industry needs, ensuring that graduates were employable and equipped with the technical expertise to drive innovation and entrepreneurship.
“Investment in modern infrastructure, well-equipped training centres, and cutting-edge digital tools has been prioritized to enhance practical learning.”
Additionally, strategic partnerships between technical universities and industry players are being strengthened to provide apprenticeship and internship opportunities that expose students to real-world applications of their skills.
“These collaborations are designed to create a seamless transition from education to employment, reducing the skills mismatch that often hinders economic growth. Furthermore, the government recognizes that TVET is about training workers and fostering a generation of job creators.
“To this end, entrepreneurship training has been integrated to empower graduates with the knowledge and resources to establish their own businesses.
He stated that additional financial support, scholarships, and funding opportunities for start-ups, TVET graduates, are being positioned as key contributors to Ghana’s industrialization agenda.
The digitization of TVET education is also gaining momentum, with the introduction of smart learning technologies, automation, and artificial intelligence-driven training models that prepared students for the future of work, adding that the government remained unwavering in its commitment to strengthening TVET, investing in technical education, and ensuring that every graduate had the opportunity to succeed.
The Deputy Minister said the Takoradi Technical University continued to be a trailblazer in this transformation, playing a critical role in shaping Ghana’s workforce for global competitiveness.
He reminded the graduands that their education was not just a personal achievement- “it is a national asset… We count on your determination, ingenuity, and resilience to drive Ghana’s industrial transformation, and together, we will build a stronger, skills-driven economy that benefits all Ghanaians.”
Professor Augustine Ocloo, the Deputy Director General of Ghana Technical Education Commission encouraged the graduands to seek opportunities to connect with industry, to share their ideas, and to bring their unique perspectives to the table.
“The future belongs to those who are willing to collaborate, to learn, and to grow together. The relationships you build today can become powerful networks that support your career and personal growth” he added.
Reverend Professor John Frank Eshun, the Vice Chancellor of the TTU, said the University was committed to academic excellence and innovation, adding that “we are in the process of introducing PhD and Doctor of Technology programmes to expand our academic portfolio.”
He said the long-term goal was to develop PhD programmes across all faculties, ensuring that the TTU provided advanced research and learning opportunities that aligned with the evolving demands of both academia and industry.
He told the graduates: “The technical education you have received at Takoradi Technical University has not only sharpened your skills but also empowered you to innovate, create opportunities, and even generate employment for others.
As you step forward, carry with you the values of our institution. Be exemplary ambassadors, living out the essence of our cherished motto: Adwen, Akoma na Nsa ma Mpuntu— ‘Mind, Heart, and Hands for Development.’
Mr Samuel Kweku Damoah topped the graduating class with a 4.93 CGPA

The Muslim community in Dambai township feels neglected by the country’s two major political parties, the NDC and the NPP, during the Eid-al-Fitr celebrations.
This sentiment arises as the community marks the end of Ramadan, a month-long period of fasting and spiritual reflection, with invitations to the parties going unacknowledged.
Eid-al-Fitr is a significant festival in the Islamic calendar, characterized by prayers, feasting, gift-giving, and family gatherings.
Despite sending formal invitations to both parties, neither the MCE nominee, the Regional Minister, nor representatives from the NPP and NDC attended the congregational prayers, known as Salat al-Eid.
The absence of these representatives was particularly noticeable, leaving the Muslim community feeling unappreciated.
Mr. Ashraf Elias, Secretary to Ahlussuna Wal-Jama’Ah, expressed surprise in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at the lack of political party representation.
The Eid-al-Fitr celebrations serve as a time for communities to come together, strengthen bonds, and renew their commitment to their faith.
However, the perceived neglect by the political parties has cast a shadow over the festivities in Dambai.
The community emphasizes the importance of inclusivity and recognition, particularly during significant religious festivals.
Meanwhile, the NPP in Krachi East has apologized for missing the Eid-al-Fitr celebrations in Dambai, citing confusion over the event’s date.
Mr. Charles Gyamfi Boateng, the immediate past Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and chairman of the NPP in Krachi East, stated that there was a mix-up among party members regarding the date of the celebration.
He explained that some believed it would be observed on March 30, while others thought it would take place on March 31, 2025.
“Unfortunately, by the time the party realized the correct date was indeed March 30, they were already engaged in other activities outside the constituency,” Mr. Boateng said.
He extended apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused, acknowledging the importance of the Eid-al-Fitr celebrations to the Muslim community.
Similarly, Mr. Dramani Sulemana of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) responded to concerns over the party’s absence, stating that they were not formally invited.
Despite this, Chairman Sulemana has promised to visit the Muslim community on behalf of the NDC in the constituency during the week.
Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA), has vowed to tackle receivables challenges and lead the national power generator toward innovative solutions to secure Ghana’s energy future.
Addressing the 2024 Biennial National Delegates Congress of the VRA Senior Staff Association (SSA) in Koforidua, he pledged his commitment to revitalizing VRA and ensuring Ghana’s energy security through the provision of resources, training, and strategic leadership.
He emphasized the need for both individual and collective action to address critical challenges in the energy generation sector, urging all stakeholders to collaborate in finding sustainable solutions to bolster Ghana’s energy security, reliability, and affordability.
Speaking on the theme “The Impact of Receivables Challenges on the Operations of VRA/NEDCo: Ghana’s Energy Security,” Mr. Obeng-Kenzo highlighted the importance of reliable and sustainable energy for economic growth and development.
“Our services impact all facets of the economy, from manufacturing and education to healthcare and security,” he stated, underscoring the far-reaching influence of VRA and its subsidiary, NEDCo.
The CEO identified key factors contributing to VRA’s receivables challenges, including unreliable power supply, perceived high production costs, delays in billing, and illegal power connections.
He urged staff to innovate and contribute proactively. “As partners in good corporate governance, let us commit to improving our efficiency and productivity while safeguarding the VRA brand built over decades.”
Mr. Obeng-Kenzo commended the resilience and dedication of the staff, whose efforts have steered the authority over its 63-year history.
He acknowledged the need to adapt to a changing business landscape where private energy companies are making strides, cautioning, “We risk being left behind if we do not rise to the occasion.”
He outlined steps to improve debt collection and revenue performance, emphasizing collaboration, integrity, and adherence to VRA’s core values. “Each of us has a role to play in ensuring the financial health and operational success of this institution.”
Despite these challenges, Mr. Obeng-Kenzo expressed optimism about VRA’s future, pledging resources, training, and strategic leadership to sustain it for the next six decades.
He urged employees to align their efforts with the overarching goal of delivering reliable and affordable electricity to Ghanaians and businesses.
As VRA approaches its 64th anniversary, he reaffirmed his belief in the collective power of patriotism and unity to drive the authority and the nation forward, saying, “Together, we can make VRA and Ghana great again.”
The 2024 Congress addressed key issues arising from the 2022 Congress. Delegates reviewed leadership accounts, focusing on the financial performance and position of the Association for the latter half of 2022, as well as for 2023 and 2024.
This provided an in-depth analysis of the association’s progress and areas for improvement.
The Congress also served as a platform to update members on activities undertaken by the National Executive Committee since their election in March 2023, covering initiatives and achievements up to December 2024.
Another focal point was an exploration of the Association’s motto, “Partners in Good Corporate Governance.”
Delegates identified innovative ways to collaborate with management to enhance VRA’s performance and improve staff conditions of service, ensuring the authority’s sustained growth and operational efficiency.
Mr. Theophilus Tetteh Ahia, National Chairperson of VRA SSA, emphasized the critical role of the association in sustaining and improving VRA’s operations and its subsidiary, NEDCo.
He highlighted key challenges, including the revised cash waterfall mechanism and high distribution losses—primarily due to power theft—particularly in the Tamale metropolis.
Despite efforts by the Boards, management, and staff of VRA and NEDCo to achieve their vision of becoming “a model of excellence for power utilities in Africa,” both entities continue to face operational and cash flow challenges.
Mr. Ahia noted that VRA’s market share had dropped from 63.8% in 2019 to 50.3% as of March 24, 2025.
He further stated that NEDCo was grappling with commercial and technical losses, hindering its financial performance and liquidity.
Addressing these challenges, he stressed the need for collaboration between management and the SSA to implement strategic measures.
These measures include contesting the revised cash waterfall mechanism and unfair competition in the electricity market, converting simple cycle plants into combined cycle plants, repowering the T3 plant, and introducing technology to reduce distribution losses, particularly in Tamale.
Mr. Ahia underscored the importance of motivating staff, improving supervision, enhancing productivity, and safeguarding staff conditions of service.
He therefore called for the appointment of competent leaders and resistance against government efforts to pass certain energy sector bills, such as the “Ghana Hydro Authority,” “Ghana Thermal Authority,” and “Ghana Distribution Authority” bills.
He also opposed the proposed merger of NEDCo with ECG under private sector participation.
The 2024 SSA Congress convened leading experts in the electricity market for a panel discussion to identify critical challenges and formulate proposed solutions.
Mr. Ahia expressed confidence that these discussions would contribute to the long-term viability and sustainability of VRA and NEDCo, enabling them to play a more effective role in securing Ghana’s energy future.
Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem-Sai, has confirmed the arrest of 14 individuals, including three Ghanaians and 11 foreign nationals, in connection with the missing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers at the Tema Port.
The containers, numbering over 1,300, vanished under suspicious circumstances, raising concerns about possible corruption and collusion within the system.
According to him, the suspects were apprehended by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and the Ghana Police Service at Dangfang Company Limited and Ponlok Manufacturing Company Limited, both located around the Shai Hills area.
He stated that the foreign nationals, who have identified themselves as Chinese, along with their Ghanaian counterparts, are currently under investigation as authorities work to unravel the network behind the missing ECG containers.
He stressed that the police, in accordance with due process, have granted bail to the suspects while retaining their passports to prevent them from fleeing the country.
Additionally, they are required to provide sureties who can ensure their availability for further investigations.
He noted that law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing leads provided by the arrested individuals, as authorities believe the case involves a broader syndicate with more people yet to be apprehended.
Justice Srem-Sai reiterated the government’s commitment to recovering stolen state resources while ensuring that the rights of all suspects are upheld.
He emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and urged the general public to provide any relevant information that could aid in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Osahene Agyeman Sabi, the Krontrihene (sub-chief) of the Berekum Traditional Council
Osahene Agyeman Sabi, the Krontrihene (sub-chief) of the Berekum Traditional Council in the Bono Region, has denied allegations of his involvement in illegal mining activities at Benkasa in the Berekum West Municipality.
Osahene Sabi described the allegations against him as unfounded and unsubstantiated and asked the people to disregard the ‘false rumours,’ saying, “I am not involved in any galamsey, and I will not even get myself involved in that bad practice.”
Addressing a news conference at Berekum, the chief called on security operatives and Mr. Dickson Kyere Duah, the Member of Parliament for the Berekum West Constituency, to take the matter up, assuring them of the Traditional Council’s readiness to support the fight against galamsey in the area.
“The Traditional Council will not allow any galamsey activity to happen on Berekum land,” he warned.
“Although I have some family land at Benkasa, I have never given any permission or approval for anybody or any company to undertake mining on it,” Osahene Sabi stated.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kyere Duah, the MP for the area, has assured the people that urgent measures will be put in place to prevent illegal mining in the community.
He told the GNA in an interview at Jinijini that they would do everything possible to prevent galamsey within the district.
Children in basic schools have a role to play in strengthening the pillars of Ghana’s democracy, Mr. Ariston Antwi, the Manso Adubia District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has stated.
He said upholding the principles of the 1992 Constitution at that age could go a long way to build an enlightened society conscious of the importance of the rule of law and multi-party democracy.
Mr. Antwi made these comments during a quiz competition organised by the District Directorate of NCCE for three basic schools in the district in commemoration of Ghana’s 68th independence anniversary.
The quiz which was organised in collaboration with the District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES), sought to test the knowledge of the pupils on the Constitution.
Representatives from the District Assembly, District Education Directorate as well as pupils from the participating school witnessed the keenly contested competition.
United Basic Junior High School emerged as winners with 53 points followed by Manso Adubia D/A Junior High School (48) and Nyankumasi TI Ahmadiyyah Junior High School (42).
The District Director of NCCE admonished the children to be disciplined, respectful, truthful, and hardworking as young people destined to assume the leadership of the country in future.
He encouraged them to be abreast with the contents of the Constitution to ensure they don’t depart from their civic responsibilities.
Mr. Stephen Adu Darko, the District Director of Education, commended NCCE for putting together the quiz to promote healthy competition between the schools.
