GH¢6.2 bn worth of excavators are imported into the country – Lands Minister

0

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has revealed that excavators imported into Ghana are valued at GH¢6.2 billion, ranking among the country’s top three highest imports.

Speaking on JoyNews’ on Saturday, March 22, Mr. Kofi Buah underscored the need for stricter regulation and oversight of excavator usage, particularly in the mining and construction sectors.

“We must ensure that every excavator entering the country is properly tracked, has a legitimate purpose, and that we can pinpoint its exact location 24 hours a day,” he emphasised.

According to the minister, the initiative aims to curb illegal mining activities and ensure excavators are used for lawful purposes.

He further disclosed that his ministry is working closely with the Minerals Commission, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), and the Ministry of Transport to strengthen monitoring and management mechanisms.

“Starting from the port, we are working with DVLA and others. I have had the first discussion with the Minister of Transport because we believe that other agencies must be part of this whole exercise,” he explained.

Mr. Kofi Buah assured that proposals are under review to develop an effective tracking system that will include digital monitoring mechanisms and inter-agency cooperation.

The goal, he noted, is to ensure transparency and accountability at every stage of excavator importation, registration, and use.

“We must make sure that any excavator imported into the country is tracked, has a purpose, and we know exactly where they are 24 hours a day,” he reiterated.

A 14-year-old Junior High School (JHS) student has lost both forearms, hands and one leg due to electrical burns while holding a wire in a television set.

The incident occurred on Christmas day last year when the boy (name withheld), a resident of Hobor, a local community in Accra, came into contact with the wire from the television in his home.

A powerful electric current is said to have surged through his body, causing him to lose consciousness.

Emergency responders transported him to the Kwameanu Ashalajah Hospital, where he regained consciousness with severe burn injuries.

Due to the extent of his condition, he was later transferred to the Amasaman Hospital where he was referred to the National Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre (NRPSBC) at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on January 1, 2025.

Despite the efforts of doctors and nurses at the centre, the severity of the burns left no option but to amputate his limbs to prevent further complications.

Recovery efforts

In a show of compassion, an Indian philanthropic group, Maa Sherawaali, donated GH¢25,000 to support the boy’s medical treatment and upkeep, easing his family’s financial burden.

The group has also pledged continued assistance as he navigates the challenges ahead.

Currently, a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, psychologists, nutritionists, physiotherapists and educators are working together to support his rehabilitation.

He is undergoing training to write with his leg and is gradually adapting to his new reality.

Doctors say the boy is now in stable condition and communicating well.

He is expected to undergo a final surgical procedure in May, which will involve skin grafting to cover the amputated areas and the fitting of artificial limbs to aid mobility.

Ghana does not belong to Mahama or NDC – Kwesi Pratt loses cool over political appointments

Kwesi Pratt Jr, the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper Kwesi Pratt Jr, the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr, has condemned politically induced appointments at all levels.

Speaking to the trend which is gaining widespread attention and acceptance on Pan African TV on March 22, 2025, he described the trend as anti-national and stupid.

“The new trend I’m seeing on social media of late is that national assignments are being given based on political links. And you’ll see a tall list of openings being tagged available to party affiliates. What nonsense is that? That is anti-national and stupid.” he said.

He stated that it brewed retaliation from opposition parties and denied ordinary eligible professionals job opportunities.

“Should the NPP ever come to power, I’m sure even if you’re medical professional, you’ll have to present your party card to get a job placement,” he said.

He described the emerging trend as bad precedence, declaring that the country is for all Ghanaians, hence people are expected to gain employment should they decide to remain apolitical.

“What is happening in this country? We are one people with one destiny. So, the people who are not aligned to any party, are they not Ghanaians?

“Ghana does not belong to John Mahama and the NDC. What happens at the polls is just to elect people who can manage the country and it ends there. We must apply the same level of discipline and principle in our fight against illegal mining,” he added.

Declining T-Bill rates pose threat to foreign exchange stability and cedi depreciation

0

Interest rates for treasury bills continue to drop Interest rates for treasury bills continue to drop

Professor Peter Quartey, Director, of the Institute of Statistical, Social, and Economic Research (ISSER), has raised serious concerns over the declining Treasury Bills (T-Bills) rates.

He said the decline had a potential impact on foreign exchange stability and the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.

He expressed these concerns in an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency.

Professor Quartey cautioned that the current trend is unsustainable and could exacerbate the country’s economic challenges if not addressed promptly.

The warning comes when the Central Bank prepares to announce the new interest rate at the next Monetary Policy Committee Meeting.

The reduction in T-bill rates from 16.93 to 15.88 per cent has raised concerns among investors and market watchers over its impact on the exchange rate.

Professor Quartey highlighted that the sharp decline in T-Bill rates had led to a shift in investor behaviour, with many opting to divest from local bonds and treasury instruments in favour of holding foreign currencies, particularly the US dollar.

“If we are not careful, this artificial decline in T-Bill rates will put pressure on our foreign exchange reserves. People are already buying dollars and stopping investments in local instruments. This will only worsen the cedi’s depreciation,” he stated.

The ISSER Director pointed out that the current fixed deposit rate of 10 per cent, in comparison to the soaring inflation rate of 23 per cent, made it unattractive for investors to keep their funds in local currency.

“Why would anyone invest in a 10 per cent fixed deposit when inflation is at 23 per cent? It doesn’t make sense. People are naturally seeking safer havens for their money, and this is causing a currency substitution problem,” he said.

Professor Quartey also expressed concern over the broader implications of the trend for monetary policy and economic stability.

He noted that the decline in T-Bill rates could create significant challenges for the Bank of Ghana and the government.

“If investors continue to sell off local bonds and treasury bills, it will become increasingly difficult for the government to raise the needed funds to support critical sectors of the economy,” he said.

The economist further emphasised the need for a diversified approach to economic management, including a focus on gold and other export commodities to mitigate political and economic shocks.

“We need to revise our export retention schemes and ensure that we are not overly reliant on a single source of revenue. Diversification is key to sustaining growth and stability,” he said.

Following Ghana’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Chad in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, President John Dramani Mahama expressed his delight, revealing that the win restored his appetite after earlier concerns about the emotional toll of watching the Black Stars play.

Before the match, Mahama had shared that he was advised to eat before watching the game due to the stress football brings him.

However, after witnessing the dominant display by Otto Addo’s men, he was in high spirits.

“I had a good appetite for dinner after the Black Stars’ 5-0 victory. Congrats, guys!” he posted, celebrating the crucial win.

Despite the resounding result, Mahama urged the team to remain focused and not become complacent, emphasizing that the victory should be the start of rebuilding the connection between the team and Ghanaians.

“Let this victory not make us complacent. This should be the beginning of bringing back the LOVE,” he added.

With Ghana now leading Group I, attention turns to the next crucial fixture against Madagascar on Monday in Morocco.

Mahama and millions of Ghanaians will be hoping for another strong performance to edge the Black Stars closer to securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Niger declares three days of mourning after attack on a Mosque kills 44

0

The military-run government of Niger frequently fights armed groups in the region The military-run government of Niger frequently fights armed groups in the region

The government of Niger has declared three days of mourning following an attack on a mosque in the country’s southwest that killed at least 44 people.

The victims were killed in a “savage” armed assault in the Fambita quarter of the rural border town of Kokorou, the interior ministry said in a statement broadcast on state television on Friday.

The ministry said another 13 people were wounded.

West Africa’s Sahel region has seen an uptick in violence in recent years following the rise of armed fighters linked to the al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS) armed groups that took over territory in north Mali after the 2012 Tuareg rebellion.

Since then, it has spread into neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso, and more recently into the north of coastal West African countries such as Togo and Ghana.

Niger’s interior ministry said the latest attack occurred early in the afternoon as people were attending a prayer service at the mosque during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

“The heavily armed terrorists surrounded the mosque to carry out their massacre with unusual cruelty,” it said, adding that the attackers also set fire to a local market and homes.

The defence ministry blamed the attack on the Islamic State in the Great Sahara, or EIGS, an affiliate of ISIL, in a statement late on Friday.

EIGS had no immediate reaction to the allegation. Previous attacks in Niger were claimed by al-Qaeda affiliate groups.

The government has promised to hunt down the perpetrators and put them on trial.

The military-run government of Niger frequently fights armed groups in the region, and civilians are often victims of the violence.

Since July 2023, at least 2,400 people have been killed in Niger, according to the database of ACLED, a non-governmental organisation that gives armed conflict location and event data.

Across the greater Sahel region that encompasses several countries, hundreds of thousands more have been killed and millions displaced as armed groups attack towns and villages as well as government security outposts.

The failure of governments to restore security contributed to two coups in Mali, two in Burkina Faso and one in Niger between 2020 and 2023. All three remain under military rule despite regional and international pressure to hold elections.

Since the coups, authorities have turned away from traditional Western allies and have sought military support from Russia instead.

“Go Away, We Don’t Want You Here” — Ghanaian Youth in Ashanti Jeer at Mahama’s Visit

0

GHOne TV reported that as former President John Dramani Mahama passed through a gathering in the Ashanti Region, a crowd of young Ghanaians voiced their discontent, chanting, “Go away! We don’t want you here!” The reaction reflected a growing sense of frustration and disillusionment, particularly among young voters who traditionally support the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

More than just an objection to Mahama’s visit, the protest signified broader dissatisfaction with Ghana’s political leadership and the persistent failure to fulfill promises.

“We’ve heard it all before,” one young man said. “Mahama was in office, and yet our struggles remain the same. What’s different this time?” Others echoed his frustration, criticizing the lack of real progress during Mahama’s tenure.

As Mahama attempted to engage with the crowd, his message was drowned out by continued chanting and disapproval. “I want to hear your concerns,” he said. “Let’s work together to build a better Ghana.” However, many in the audience dismissed his remarks as empty political rhetoric.

“Every election, you promise jobs, education, and better healthcare, but here in Ashanti, nothing changes,” a young woman shouted in response.

The anger stems from persistent problems such as high unemployment, a lack of opportunities, and slow economic development. While the Ashanti Region has historically leaned toward the NPP, many young people feel neglected, with little improvement in their quality of life.

As Mahama’s convoy moved forward, a few supporters attempted to calm tensions and call for unity. However, the dissatisfaction among the youth remained strong, signaling mounting pressure on Ghana’s leaders to take meaningful steps toward addressing their concerns before the next elections.

Free SHS policy has come to stay

0

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has reiterated the Mahama administration’s commitment to sustaining and improving the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, emphasizing efforts to enhance funding and quality.

Speaking as the guest of honor at the 66th anniversary of Swedru Secondary School on Saturday, March 22, Dr. Forson announced plans to amend the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) Act to allocate a portion of the fund specifically to support Free SHS.

“Nananom, the Free SHS Policy has come to stay. Free Senior High School has come to stay. President John Dramani Mahama said I should tell you that free education, Free SHS has come to stay,” he declared.

Dr. Forson acknowledged two major challenges affecting the programme—sustainability and quality—and assured that the government is taking steps to address them. He emphasized that adequate funds would be allocated for student accommodation, logistics, and feeding.

“However, there are two challenges that face the implementation of free secondary education. The first is how sustainable the Free SHS should be managed, and the second is the quality of the free SHS education.

“The government would ensure that the funds for the accommodation, logistics, and feeding of students. President said I should inform you that the arrears owed to the Ghana Education Trust Fund for the past 8 years have been paid, as stated in the 2025 budget,” he stated.

Dr. Forson further disclosed that the 2025 allocation for GETFund stands at GHC4.1 billion, with an additional GHC9 billion expected this year. He assured that amendments to the GETFund Act would prevent future diversions of funds, ensuring sustained support for Free SHS.

“The 2025 allocation for Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) is GHC4.1 billion, and this year, it will receive GHC9 billion. We will amend the Ghana Education Trust Fund Act to prevent the government from diverting these funds, ensuring that a portion is used specifically for Free SHS.”

Additionally, he assured parents and students that food supplies in schools would see significant improvements under the new administration.

“Parents, students, President Mahama said I should assure you that the feed will improve this time round.”

“They Threw Dust Into the Air” – Prof. Gyampo Alleges Plot to Sabotage His Nomination

0

Professor Ransford Gyampo has claimed that the “Sex for Grades” allegations against him were part of a deliberate scheme to tarnish his reputation and prevent his selection as a running mate as reported by MyNewsGH.

Speaking in an interview on 3FM, he insisted that the accusations lacked merit and were strategically crafted to damage his credibility at a crucial time.

According to him, his nomination was opposed by someone close to the person considering him for the position, leading to a plot to discredit him.

“I was the one selected to be a running mate, but someone around the person opposed it. To prevent that, they threw dust into the air so that by the time it settled, the person proposing me would change their mind,” he revealed.

Professor Gyampo maintained that there was no evidence to support the allegations, adding that he was never caught engaging in any misconduct.

He emphasized that due process cleared his name, and he was reinstated and later promoted at the university.

Following the incident, he noted that those who believed in his innocence continued to support him. “My people believed I was unnecessarily framed, and that’s why they voted for me twice in elections after the incident,” he stated.

Despite the challenges, he has chosen to move forward, drawing lessons from the experience rather than dwelling on past events.

We will not interfere in management of universities – Minister

0

Accra, March 22, GNA – Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, has indicated government’s commitment to giving the management and councils of public universities the freehand to operate.

He said government placed high premium on academic freedom and regarded external interferences in universities as a threat to that freedom.

“I want to assure you that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, supported by his Vice President, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, a former vice-chancellor herself, and a highly experienced academic, is firmly committed to empowering university councils and management to perform their statutory duties without interference.”

The Minister gave the assurance in a speech read on his behalf at the Second Session of the Third Congregation of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), in Accra, on Friday.

The event saw the University confer a Master of Philosophies (Mphil) and Master of Arts (MA) degree on 205 students; comprising 116 females and 89 males.

Mr Iddrisu expressed government’s commitment to empowering academic boards and management of the various public universities to enable them to perform their duties legitimately.

He, however, warned that the Ministry would not hesitate to hold them accountable for non-performance or illegitimate actions.

The Minister commended the Management of UniMAC for its commitment to upholding excellence and for incorporating research as a key area of study.

The  government attached high importance to research functions because they were critical for the country’s development, he said, and promised to operationalise the Ghana National Research Fund Act (Act 1056).

Passed by Parliament in 2020, the Act is designed to provide sustainable financial support for research activities in universities and research institutions.

The Minister said plans were far advanced to have it operationalised to support research activities in the various universities.

“Management structures are being put in place with seed money from GETFund to ensure that the national research fund becomes operational this year.”

He assured the Management of UniMAC of government’s continued support to enable it to train professionals capable of competing both locally and internationally with their peers.

Prof. Eric Opoku Mensah, the Vice-Chancellor, UniMAC, said as an institution, it remained committed to equipping graduates with the skills necessary for the 21st century economy.

“Moreover, our alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reinforces our commitment to quality education (SDG 4), gender equality (SDG 5), industry innovation (SDG 9), and reduced inequalities (SDG 10),” he said.

“Through research, policy advocacy, and academic excellence, we remain steadfast in shaping a future where education is the bridge to prosperity.”

Prof Mensah stressed the need for infrastructural expansion, improved student welfare, and enhanced faculty development, appealing to the government to provide support to the school to enable it to achieve that objective.

He urged the graduands to be resilient, adapt to the ever-changing job market and continue to learn to make the impact they desired.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, a Development Communication postgraduate student, Mr James Amoh Junior, described the academic journey as both “transformative and enlightening.”

He said the course provided a deeper understanding of the intersection between communication and sustainable development, equipping students with the tools to drive social change through strategic messaging and storytelling.

“This experience has reshaped the way I approach journalism and communication. It has deepened my commitment to using my platform not just to inform, but to influence policies and empower communities,” he said.

My talented team will fix Ghana’s economy – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has defended the capabilities of the individuals he has appointed to serve in his administration, stating that they are young, talented, and determined to guide Ghana through its current economic crisis.

According to the President, his team is fully committed to tackling the economic challenges head-on and working towards the country’s transformation.

Speaking during a visit to the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, President Mahama assured the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama II, of his unwavering commitment to Ghana’s development.

He acknowledged the difficulties the nation is currently facing but expressed confidence in his administration’s ability to address these issues with competence and dedication.

In his remarks, President Mahama acknowledged that while political campaigns and winning elections are significant, they are the easier part of leadership.

The real test, he stated, lies in delivering on the promises made to the people and addressing the pressing economic hardships that have burdened citizens across the country.

“Campaigns and elections are easy. The more difficult part is how to meet the challenge that is facing us especially now that our country is in a deep economic crisis. How we work to meet the expectations of the Ghanaian people and eliminate the hardship that they are facing is the task that we are currently confronted with.

“The task is a difficult one but we have assembled a team of young and talented members of my administration who are capable of helping me to steer the affairs of this country to enormous success.”

We’ll build bridges between Anglophone and Francophone communities

0

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has affirmed Ghana’s commitment to leveraging its full membership in the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) to strengthen ties between Anglophone and Francophone African communities.

Speaking at La Francophonie’s 55th anniversary flag-raising ceremony in Accra, he emphasized Ghana’s dedication to the shared values of democracy, human rights, cultural diversity, and sustainable development.

“Ghana, under the leadership of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, intends to use her new status with the OIF to promote the values and principles that bind us together,” Mr. Ablakwa stated. “We reaffirm our commitment to building bridges between Ghana and Anglophone and Francophone communities.”

He highlighted Ghana’s efforts toward regional peace and stability and reiterated the nation’s unwavering commitment to fostering democratic governance, human rights, and sustainable development.

Given the prevailing regional and global political climate, he stressed the urgency of promoting these ideals.

“Indeed, in the context of our current regional and global landscape, the promotion of these ideals has become even more imperative,” he remarked.

Mr. Ablakwa also acknowledged the contributions that facilitated Ghana’s attainment of full membership status in the OIF. He extended appreciation to Ambassador Thai Hong Mai, the West African Representative of the OIF, along with her team and member states, for their support in this achievement. Ghana officially attained full membership in October 2024.

Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Maher Kheir, Ambassador of Lebanon and President of the Group of Francophonie Ambassadors, described Ghana’s accomplishment as a testament to its commitment to bilingualism, cooperation, and active engagement with the Francophone world.

“More than ever, Ghana is poised to play a key role in ECOWAS and regional diplomacy, bridging the gap between English-speaking and French-speaking African countries,” he noted.

Interior minister to face Parliament over ‘raid’ on former Bank of Ghana Governor’s home

0

Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, Minister of the Interior Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, Minister of the Interior

Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, Minister of the Interior, is set to appear before Parliament to provide details on the alleged search warrant executed at the residence of Dr. Ernest Addison, a former Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

This follows an alleged raid on Dr. Addison’s Roman Ridge home on Wednesday, March 19 by heavily armed National Security operatives, which has raised concerns about due process and the motives behind the operation.

Members of Parliament (MPs), particularly from the New Patriotic Party Minority Caucus, have called for full disclosure on the legality and justification for the raid, insisting that Parliament must hold the government accountable for the actions of security agencies.

The Interior minister is expected to clarify the basis for the search warrant and the allegations leading to the operation.

However, Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga has defended the operation, saying it was not a raid but rather a properly executed search warrant carried out in accordance with the law. “Mr. Speaker, law enforcement officers lawfully went there to conduct a search, and it is perfectly lawful. And so, using the word raid is clearly wrong,” he said.

Meanwhile, a new date for the Minister’s appearance is yet to be announced, after Ayariga revealed that the Interior minister will not be available on Tuesday, March 25.

The Interior Minister’s appearance before Parliament is expected to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the alleged raid.

According to the reports armed men, approximately 20 in number, allegedly led by Mr. Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, raided the private residence of the former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Addison, on Wednesday, March 19.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the heavily armed officers allegedly disabled the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) system before searching the house.

Reports indicated that the heavily armed men, some allegedly wearing balaclavas and wielding AK-47 semi-automatic rifles, demanded that Dr. Addison led them to the “vaults” in his house.

However, Dr. Addison allegedly informed them that he had no vaults or cache of cash at home. Despite this, the security personnel allegedly ransacked the house, disabling the CCTV system beforehand.

According to eyewitnesses, no vaults were found, and no large amounts of cash were discovered.

The security personnel eventually left allegedly with the CCTV monitor and control unit.

Dr. Addison, his wife, and their family are reportedly traumatised following the raid.

The NPP will shine again

0

Ghanaian actor Prince David Osei has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to learn from its mistakes, reunite, and prepare for a stronger comeback in the 2028 general elections.

In a post on his X handle on March 21, 2025, Osei urged the party to focus on self-improvement and unity, stating that opportunities should be taken advantage of.

“NPP, remember opportunities don’t go to waste. They just go to other people!! Let’s work on our mistakes, reunite, and bounce back stronger!” Osei wrote.

He also described the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as “brothers” rather than enemies and expressed optimism about the emergence of a new generation of leaders within the NPP.

“NDC is not our enemies but brothers; they will do what they can do in these 4 years!! But in 2028, a new breed of young bloods are emerging for exceptional leadership with national patriotism!! We will shine again!!!” he added.

Osei’s comments come following what some people have described as turbulence within the party after a series of interviews by former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, accusing the party of unfair treatment against her and some other members.

Summon Akufo-Addo to disciplinary committee for Afoko, Agyepong exits

0

Edward Ennin is a former Obuasi East MP Edward Ennin is a former Obuasi East MP

A former Member of Parliament for Obuasi East, Edward Michael Ennin, has called for the summoning of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to the disciplinary committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He expressed the view that the former president allegedly orchestrated the removal of key figures from the party, including Paul Afoko, a former national chairman, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former general secretary.

Speaking on Asempa FM on Saturday, March 22, 2025, Ennin stated that Akufo-Addo should be the one summoned before the committee for investigation and possible punishment regarding how these individuals were removed from the party, rather than the party attempting to silence disgruntled members.

“Is this not the same party where some of the leaders like Akufo-Addo orchestrated the sacking of Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong? The manner in which they sacked these people wasn’t right but why haven’t they addressed that issue? They should also summon Akufo-Addo to the disciplinary committee to answer for how they used the constitution to sack these people. The way they sacked them was it right?” he lamented.

The former lawmaker expressed regret over the loss of some founding and prominent figures from the party.

He urged the party leadership to rise above greediness and avoid causing pain to its members in their efforts to serve and remain loyal to an individual.

He stated that such actions could further deepen the divisions within the party and drive more people away.

“No one is bigger in the party than others. Today we have lost all our leaders. The likes of Wereko-Brobbey and Kwame Mpianim toiled for this party but because of Akufo-Addo, all these people have been driven away from the party. Are we serving one person or what?”.

Edward Ennin was making a submission regarding the NPP’s decision to refer the former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, to the disciplinary committee for what the party describes as exhibiting anti-party conduct.

Meanwhile, Paul Afoko, who served as the NPP’s national chairman from April 2014, faced suspension in October 2015 alongside General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong and Second Vice Chairperson Sammy Crabbe.

The party cited actions deemed detrimental to its political fortunes as the reason for their suspension.

‘We will build the best tolling system in Africa’

0

Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reintroducing a technologically advanced tolling system to generate revenue for road infrastructure development.

To this end, the minister has announced that Ghana will soon launch its own electronic tolling system, with the ambitious goal of establishing “the best road tolling system in Africa.”

“We are not settling for anything less than excellence,” he stated, emphasising the importance of innovation and expressing the government’s determination to dispel any doubts regarding the reintroduction of tolls.

Agbodza made these remarks in Accra on Tuesday during a courtesy call by the Turkish Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Hüseyin Güngör.

He noted that the ministry is currently in the process of obtaining approval from the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) to select a transaction advisor.

“Transparency is a priority, and we welcome all capable organisations to participate in the selection process. We want the best technical and financial proposal that will enable us to operate a highly sustainable tolling system,” he stated.

The minister assured the public that his ministry would keep them informed about the progress of the tolling system’s development and the selection process for the transaction advisor.

“In a few days, the advertisement for the selection of the transaction advisor should be out. Together, we will pave the way for a brighter future in road infrastructure,” he added.

The discussions also explored opportunities for Turkish investors to contribute to the country’s road infrastructure development through the government’s flagship programme, “The Big Push.”

Mr. Agbodza further highlighted the potential for technical cooperation between the two nations and invited Turkish engineers to share their expertise in tolling systems.

“We are ready to collaborate and learn from successful models, particularly those in Turkey that utilise technology instead of traditional toll booths. Our partnership could lay a strong foundation for Ghana’s new tolling system, ensuring it is both efficient and sustainable,” he concluded.

Man Says His Girlfriend Is ‘Angry’ He’s Taking a Work Trip Without Her: ‘She Started Crying’

A man says that his girlfriend is mad he’s going on a work trip without her — but he’s not so sure he did anything wrong.

The 25-year-old detailed his story on the popular Reddit forum “Am I the A——?” in order to get input and advice from his fellow Redditors. In the post, the man explains that he and his 24-year-old girlfriend work remotely for the same company. However, he says that while he is interested in making the most of the opportunity and eventually moving ahead, his girlfriend has “no desire in doing more than necessary to get the minimum raise each year.” He also says that she “is living with her parents” and is “deeply in debt” due to overspending on non-essentials.

The Reddit user then goes on to explain that he “recently came up with some money” and wants to use it to travel to Canada in order to visit his company and network in person.

“[It] is something [I’m] really excited about,” he added.

However, the man says that when he told his girlfriend about his plan, “she began crying” and claimed he didn’t “care about her.” He also says she insisted that “couples should have trips together or not at all.”

The original poster (OP) says that he ultimately told his girlfriend he was “sorry about hurting her,” but he doesn’t feel the same way about solo travel. He also said that while he often helps her out financially, he cannot afford to pay for both of them to go on this trip.

“AITA? [Am I the a——?]” he concludes his post.

The man’s fellow Redditors were quick to assure him that he should not feel guilty about taking a work trip — or any trip — without his significant other.

“NTA [not the a——],” wrote one commenter.  “You are an adult, and a separate entity from her. You are allowed to travel alone wherever and whenever you want. Plus, you have catered to her financially more than is necessary. You are her boyfriend, not a parent who has to cater to her every need and not go anywhere without her.”

“NTA. I’ve been with my partner for 19 years and we travel separately often, even if it’s just a weekend away to visit family. All or nothing is not a healthy way to maintain a relationship,” added someone else.

Another person recommended that the OP think long and hard about whether his girlfriend is the right partner for him and his long-term goals.

“NTA [not the a——],” they wrote, adding, “Your girlfriend is immature and sounds insufferable. This is a work trip, not a social one for you and will help with your career. I don’t know how long you’ve been dating but this is a huge red flag. Not to mention that she can’t [even] budget her money […]. Go on the business trip and rethink your relationship while you’re away.”
