The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has revealed that excavators imported into Ghana are valued at GH¢6.2 billion, ranking among the country’s top three highest imports.
Speaking on JoyNews’ on Saturday, March 22, Mr. Kofi Buah underscored the need for stricter regulation and oversight of excavator usage, particularly in the mining and construction sectors.
“We must ensure that every excavator entering the country is properly tracked, has a legitimate purpose, and that we can pinpoint its exact location 24 hours a day,” he emphasised.
According to the minister, the initiative aims to curb illegal mining activities and ensure excavators are used for lawful purposes.
He further disclosed that his ministry is working closely with the Minerals Commission, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), and the Ministry of Transport to strengthen monitoring and management mechanisms.
“Starting from the port, we are working with DVLA and others. I have had the first discussion with the Minister of Transport because we believe that other agencies must be part of this whole exercise,” he explained.
Mr. Kofi Buah assured that proposals are under review to develop an effective tracking system that will include digital monitoring mechanisms and inter-agency cooperation.
The goal, he noted, is to ensure transparency and accountability at every stage of excavator importation, registration, and use.
“We must make sure that any excavator imported into the country is tracked, has a purpose, and we know exactly where they are 24 hours a day,” he reiterated.
A 14-year-old Junior High School (JHS) student has lost both forearms, hands and one leg due to electrical burns while holding a wire in a television set.
The incident occurred on Christmas day last year when the boy (name withheld), a resident of Hobor, a local community in Accra, came into contact with the wire from the television in his home.
A powerful electric current is said to have surged through his body, causing him to lose consciousness.
Emergency responders transported him to the Kwameanu Ashalajah Hospital, where he regained consciousness with severe burn injuries.
Due to the extent of his condition, he was later transferred to the Amasaman Hospital where he was referred to the National Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre (NRPSBC) at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on January 1, 2025.
Despite the efforts of doctors and nurses at the centre, the severity of the burns left no option but to amputate his limbs to prevent further complications.
Recovery efforts
In a show of compassion, an Indian philanthropic group, Maa Sherawaali, donated GH¢25,000 to support the boy’s medical treatment and upkeep, easing his family’s financial burden.
The group has also pledged continued assistance as he navigates the challenges ahead.
Currently, a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, psychologists, nutritionists, physiotherapists and educators are working together to support his rehabilitation.
He is undergoing training to write with his leg and is gradually adapting to his new reality.
Doctors say the boy is now in stable condition and communicating well.
He is expected to undergo a final surgical procedure in May, which will involve skin grafting to cover the amputated areas and the fitting of artificial limbs to aid mobility.
Kwesi Pratt Jr, the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper
The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr, has condemned politically induced appointments at all levels.
Speaking to the trend which is gaining widespread attention and acceptance on Pan African TV on March 22, 2025, he described the trend as anti-national and stupid.
“The new trend I’m seeing on social media of late is that national assignments are being given based on political links. And you’ll see a tall list of openings being tagged available to party affiliates. What nonsense is that? That is anti-national and stupid.” he said.
He stated that it brewed retaliation from opposition parties and denied ordinary eligible professionals job opportunities.
“Should the NPP ever come to power, I’m sure even if you’re medical professional, you’ll have to present your party card to get a job placement,” he said.
He described the emerging trend as bad precedence, declaring that the country is for all Ghanaians, hence people are expected to gain employment should they decide to remain apolitical.
“What is happening in this country? We are one people with one destiny. So, the people who are not aligned to any party, are they not Ghanaians?
“Ghana does not belong to John Mahama and the NDC. What happens at the polls is just to elect people who can manage the country and it ends there. We must apply the same level of discipline and principle in our fight against illegal mining,” he added.
Interest rates for treasury bills continue to drop
Professor Peter Quartey, Director, of the Institute of Statistical, Social, and Economic Research (ISSER), has raised serious concerns over the declining Treasury Bills (T-Bills) rates.
He said the decline had a potential impact on foreign exchange stability and the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.
He expressed these concerns in an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency.
Professor Quartey cautioned that the current trend is unsustainable and could exacerbate the country’s economic challenges if not addressed promptly.
The warning comes when the Central Bank prepares to announce the new interest rate at the next Monetary Policy Committee Meeting.
The reduction in T-bill rates from 16.93 to 15.88 per cent has raised concerns among investors and market watchers over its impact on the exchange rate.
Professor Quartey highlighted that the sharp decline in T-Bill rates had led to a shift in investor behaviour, with many opting to divest from local bonds and treasury instruments in favour of holding foreign currencies, particularly the US dollar.
“If we are not careful, this artificial decline in T-Bill rates will put pressure on our foreign exchange reserves. People are already buying dollars and stopping investments in local instruments. This will only worsen the cedi’s depreciation,” he stated.
The ISSER Director pointed out that the current fixed deposit rate of 10 per cent, in comparison to the soaring inflation rate of 23 per cent, made it unattractive for investors to keep their funds in local currency.
“Why would anyone invest in a 10 per cent fixed deposit when inflation is at 23 per cent? It doesn’t make sense. People are naturally seeking safer havens for their money, and this is causing a currency substitution problem,” he said.
Professor Quartey also expressed concern over the broader implications of the trend for monetary policy and economic stability.
He noted that the decline in T-Bill rates could create significant challenges for the Bank of Ghana and the government.
“If investors continue to sell off local bonds and treasury bills, it will become increasingly difficult for the government to raise the needed funds to support critical sectors of the economy,” he said.
The economist further emphasised the need for a diversified approach to economic management, including a focus on gold and other export commodities to mitigate political and economic shocks.
“We need to revise our export retention schemes and ensure that we are not overly reliant on a single source of revenue. Diversification is key to sustaining growth and stability,” he said.

Before the match, Mahama had shared that he was advised to eat before watching the game due to the stress football brings him.
However, after witnessing the dominant display by Otto Addo’s men, he was in high spirits.
“I had a good appetite for dinner after the Black Stars’ 5-0 victory. Congrats, guys!” he posted, celebrating the crucial win.
Despite the resounding result, Mahama urged the team to remain focused and not become complacent, emphasizing that the victory should be the start of rebuilding the connection between the team and Ghanaians.
“Let this victory not make us complacent. This should be the beginning of bringing back the LOVE,” he added.
With Ghana now leading Group I, attention turns to the next crucial fixture against Madagascar on Monday in Morocco.
Mahama and millions of Ghanaians will be hoping for another strong performance to edge the Black Stars closer to securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The military-run government of Niger frequently fights armed groups in the region
The government of Niger has declared three days of mourning following an attack on a mosque in the country’s southwest that killed at least 44 people.
The victims were killed in a “savage” armed assault in the Fambita quarter of the rural border town of Kokorou, the interior ministry said in a statement broadcast on state television on Friday.
The ministry said another 13 people were wounded.
West Africa’s Sahel region has seen an uptick in violence in recent years following the rise of armed fighters linked to the al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS) armed groups that took over territory in north Mali after the 2012 Tuareg rebellion.
Since then, it has spread into neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso, and more recently into the north of coastal West African countries such as Togo and Ghana.
Niger’s interior ministry said the latest attack occurred early in the afternoon as people were attending a prayer service at the mosque during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
“The heavily armed terrorists surrounded the mosque to carry out their massacre with unusual cruelty,” it said, adding that the attackers also set fire to a local market and homes.
The defence ministry blamed the attack on the Islamic State in the Great Sahara, or EIGS, an affiliate of ISIL, in a statement late on Friday.
EIGS had no immediate reaction to the allegation. Previous attacks in Niger were claimed by al-Qaeda affiliate groups.
The government has promised to hunt down the perpetrators and put them on trial.
The military-run government of Niger frequently fights armed groups in the region, and civilians are often victims of the violence.
Since July 2023, at least 2,400 people have been killed in Niger, according to the database of ACLED, a non-governmental organisation that gives armed conflict location and event data.
Across the greater Sahel region that encompasses several countries, hundreds of thousands more have been killed and millions displaced as armed groups attack towns and villages as well as government security outposts.
The failure of governments to restore security contributed to two coups in Mali, two in Burkina Faso and one in Niger between 2020 and 2023. All three remain under military rule despite regional and international pressure to hold elections.
Since the coups, authorities have turned away from traditional Western allies and have sought military support from Russia instead.
GHOne TV reported that as former President John Dramani Mahama passed through a gathering in the Ashanti Region, a crowd of young Ghanaians voiced their discontent, chanting, “Go away! We don’t want you here!” The reaction reflected a growing sense of frustration and disillusionment, particularly among young voters who traditionally support the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
More than just an objection to Mahama’s visit, the protest signified broader dissatisfaction with Ghana’s political leadership and the persistent failure to fulfill promises.
“We’ve heard it all before,” one young man said. “Mahama was in office, and yet our struggles remain the same. What’s different this time?” Others echoed his frustration, criticizing the lack of real progress during Mahama’s tenure.
As Mahama attempted to engage with the crowd, his message was drowned out by continued chanting and disapproval. “I want to hear your concerns,” he said. “Let’s work together to build a better Ghana.” However, many in the audience dismissed his remarks as empty political rhetoric.
“Every election, you promise jobs, education, and better healthcare, but here in Ashanti, nothing changes,” a young woman shouted in response.
The anger stems from persistent problems such as high unemployment, a lack of opportunities, and slow economic development. While the Ashanti Region has historically leaned toward the NPP, many young people feel neglected, with little improvement in their quality of life.
As Mahama’s convoy moved forward, a few supporters attempted to calm tensions and call for unity. However, the dissatisfaction among the youth remained strong, signaling mounting pressure on Ghana’s leaders to take meaningful steps toward addressing their concerns before the next elections.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has reiterated the Mahama administration’s commitment to sustaining and improving the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, emphasizing efforts to enhance funding and quality.
Speaking as the guest of honor at the 66th anniversary of Swedru Secondary School on Saturday, March 22, Dr. Forson announced plans to amend the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) Act to allocate a portion of the fund specifically to support Free SHS.
“Nananom, the Free SHS Policy has come to stay. Free Senior High School has come to stay. President John Dramani Mahama said I should tell you that free education, Free SHS has come to stay,” he declared.
Dr. Forson acknowledged two major challenges affecting the programme—sustainability and quality—and assured that the government is taking steps to address them. He emphasized that adequate funds would be allocated for student accommodation, logistics, and feeding.
“However, there are two challenges that face the implementation of free secondary education. The first is how sustainable the Free SHS should be managed, and the second is the quality of the free SHS education.
“The government would ensure that the funds for the accommodation, logistics, and feeding of students. President said I should inform you that the arrears owed to the Ghana Education Trust Fund for the past 8 years have been paid, as stated in the 2025 budget,” he stated.
Dr. Forson further disclosed that the 2025 allocation for GETFund stands at GHC4.1 billion, with an additional GHC9 billion expected this year. He assured that amendments to the GETFund Act would prevent future diversions of funds, ensuring sustained support for Free SHS.
“The 2025 allocation for Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) is GHC4.1 billion, and this year, it will receive GHC9 billion. We will amend the Ghana Education Trust Fund Act to prevent the government from diverting these funds, ensuring that a portion is used specifically for Free SHS.”
Additionally, he assured parents and students that food supplies in schools would see significant improvements under the new administration.
“Parents, students, President Mahama said I should assure you that the feed will improve this time round.”
My talented team will fix Ghana’s economy – Mahama

Professor Ransford Gyampo has claimed that the “Sex for Grades” allegations against him were part of a deliberate scheme to tarnish his reputation and prevent his selection as a running mate as reported by MyNewsGH.
Speaking in an interview on 3FM, he insisted that the accusations lacked merit and were strategically crafted to damage his credibility at a crucial time.
According to him, his nomination was opposed by someone close to the person considering him for the position, leading to a plot to discredit him.
“I was the one selected to be a running mate, but someone around the person opposed it. To prevent that, they threw dust into the air so that by the time it settled, the person proposing me would change their mind,” he revealed.
Professor Gyampo maintained that there was no evidence to support the allegations, adding that he was never caught engaging in any misconduct.
He emphasized that due process cleared his name, and he was reinstated and later promoted at the university.
Following the incident, he noted that those who believed in his innocence continued to support him. “My people believed I was unnecessarily framed, and that’s why they voted for me twice in elections after the incident,” he stated.
Despite the challenges, he has chosen to move forward, drawing lessons from the experience rather than dwelling on past events.
Accra, March 22, GNA – Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, has indicated government’s commitment to giving the management and councils of public universities the freehand to operate.
He said government placed high premium on academic freedom and regarded external interferences in universities as a threat to that freedom.
“I want to assure you that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, supported by his Vice President, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, a former vice-chancellor herself, and a highly experienced academic, is firmly committed to empowering university councils and management to perform their statutory duties without interference.”
The Minister gave the assurance in a speech read on his behalf at the Second Session of the Third Congregation of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), in Accra, on Friday.
The event saw the University confer a Master of Philosophies (Mphil) and Master of Arts (MA) degree on 205 students; comprising 116 females and 89 males.
Mr Iddrisu expressed government’s commitment to empowering academic boards and management of the various public universities to enable them to perform their duties legitimately.
He, however, warned that the Ministry would not hesitate to hold them accountable for non-performance or illegitimate actions.
The Minister commended the Management of UniMAC for its commitment to upholding excellence and for incorporating research as a key area of study.
The government attached high importance to research functions because they were critical for the country’s development, he said, and promised to operationalise the Ghana National Research Fund Act (Act 1056).
Passed by Parliament in 2020, the Act is designed to provide sustainable financial support for research activities in universities and research institutions.
The Minister said plans were far advanced to have it operationalised to support research activities in the various universities.
“Management structures are being put in place with seed money from GETFund to ensure that the national research fund becomes operational this year.”
He assured the Management of UniMAC of government’s continued support to enable it to train professionals capable of competing both locally and internationally with their peers.
Prof. Eric Opoku Mensah, the Vice-Chancellor, UniMAC, said as an institution, it remained committed to equipping graduates with the skills necessary for the 21st century economy.
“Moreover, our alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reinforces our commitment to quality education (SDG 4), gender equality (SDG 5), industry innovation (SDG 9), and reduced inequalities (SDG 10),” he said.
“Through research, policy advocacy, and academic excellence, we remain steadfast in shaping a future where education is the bridge to prosperity.”
Prof Mensah stressed the need for infrastructural expansion, improved student welfare, and enhanced faculty development, appealing to the government to provide support to the school to enable it to achieve that objective.
He urged the graduands to be resilient, adapt to the ever-changing job market and continue to learn to make the impact they desired.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, a Development Communication postgraduate student, Mr James Amoh Junior, described the academic journey as both “transformative and enlightening.”
He said the course provided a deeper understanding of the intersection between communication and sustainable development, equipping students with the tools to drive social change through strategic messaging and storytelling.
“This experience has reshaped the way I approach journalism and communication. It has deepened my commitment to using my platform not just to inform, but to influence policies and empower communities,” he said.
President John Dramani Mahama has defended the capabilities of the individuals he has appointed to serve in his administration, stating that they are young, talented, and determined to guide Ghana through its current economic crisis.
According to the President, his team is fully committed to tackling the economic challenges head-on and working towards the country’s transformation.
Speaking during a visit to the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, President Mahama assured the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama II, of his unwavering commitment to Ghana’s development.
He acknowledged the difficulties the nation is currently facing but expressed confidence in his administration’s ability to address these issues with competence and dedication.
In his remarks, President Mahama acknowledged that while political campaigns and winning elections are significant, they are the easier part of leadership.
The real test, he stated, lies in delivering on the promises made to the people and addressing the pressing economic hardships that have burdened citizens across the country.
“Campaigns and elections are easy. The more difficult part is how to meet the challenge that is facing us especially now that our country is in a deep economic crisis. How we work to meet the expectations of the Ghanaian people and eliminate the hardship that they are facing is the task that we are currently confronted with.
“The task is a difficult one but we have assembled a team of young and talented members of my administration who are capable of helping me to steer the affairs of this country to enormous success.”
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has affirmed Ghana’s commitment to leveraging its full membership in the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) to strengthen ties between Anglophone and Francophone African communities.
Speaking at La Francophonie’s 55th anniversary flag-raising ceremony in Accra, he emphasized Ghana’s dedication to the shared values of democracy, human rights, cultural diversity, and sustainable development.
“Ghana, under the leadership of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, intends to use her new status with the OIF to promote the values and principles that bind us together,” Mr. Ablakwa stated. “We reaffirm our commitment to building bridges between Ghana and Anglophone and Francophone communities.”
He highlighted Ghana’s efforts toward regional peace and stability and reiterated the nation’s unwavering commitment to fostering democratic governance, human rights, and sustainable development.
Given the prevailing regional and global political climate, he stressed the urgency of promoting these ideals.
“Indeed, in the context of our current regional and global landscape, the promotion of these ideals has become even more imperative,” he remarked.
Mr. Ablakwa also acknowledged the contributions that facilitated Ghana’s attainment of full membership status in the OIF. He extended appreciation to Ambassador Thai Hong Mai, the West African Representative of the OIF, along with her team and member states, for their support in this achievement. Ghana officially attained full membership in October 2024.
Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Maher Kheir, Ambassador of Lebanon and President of the Group of Francophonie Ambassadors, described Ghana’s accomplishment as a testament to its commitment to bilingualism, cooperation, and active engagement with the Francophone world.
“More than ever, Ghana is poised to play a key role in ECOWAS and regional diplomacy, bridging the gap between English-speaking and French-speaking African countries,” he noted.
Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, Minister of the Interior
Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, Minister of the Interior, is set to appear before Parliament to provide details on the alleged search warrant executed at the residence of Dr. Ernest Addison, a former Governor of the Bank of Ghana.
This follows an alleged raid on Dr. Addison’s Roman Ridge home on Wednesday, March 19 by heavily armed National Security operatives, which has raised concerns about due process and the motives behind the operation.
Members of Parliament (MPs), particularly from the New Patriotic Party Minority Caucus, have called for full disclosure on the legality and justification for the raid, insisting that Parliament must hold the government accountable for the actions of security agencies.
The Interior minister is expected to clarify the basis for the search warrant and the allegations leading to the operation.
However, Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga has defended the operation, saying it was not a raid but rather a properly executed search warrant carried out in accordance with the law. “Mr. Speaker, law enforcement officers lawfully went there to conduct a search, and it is perfectly lawful. And so, using the word raid is clearly wrong,” he said.
Meanwhile, a new date for the Minister’s appearance is yet to be announced, after Ayariga revealed that the Interior minister will not be available on Tuesday, March 25.
The Interior Minister’s appearance before Parliament is expected to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the alleged raid.
According to the reports armed men, approximately 20 in number, allegedly led by Mr. Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, raided the private residence of the former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Addison, on Wednesday, March 19.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the heavily armed officers allegedly disabled the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) system before searching the house.
Reports indicated that the heavily armed men, some allegedly wearing balaclavas and wielding AK-47 semi-automatic rifles, demanded that Dr. Addison led them to the “vaults” in his house.
However, Dr. Addison allegedly informed them that he had no vaults or cache of cash at home. Despite this, the security personnel allegedly ransacked the house, disabling the CCTV system beforehand.
According to eyewitnesses, no vaults were found, and no large amounts of cash were discovered.
The security personnel eventually left allegedly with the CCTV monitor and control unit.
Dr. Addison, his wife, and their family are reportedly traumatised following the raid.

Ghanaian actor Prince David Osei has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to learn from its mistakes, reunite, and prepare for a stronger comeback in the 2028 general elections.
In a post on his X handle on March 21, 2025, Osei urged the party to focus on self-improvement and unity, stating that opportunities should be taken advantage of.
“NPP, remember opportunities don’t go to waste. They just go to other people!! Let’s work on our mistakes, reunite, and bounce back stronger!” Osei wrote.
He also described the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as “brothers” rather than enemies and expressed optimism about the emergence of a new generation of leaders within the NPP.
“NDC is not our enemies but brothers; they will do what they can do in these 4 years!! But in 2028, a new breed of young bloods are emerging for exceptional leadership with national patriotism!! We will shine again!!!” he added.
Osei’s comments come following what some people have described as turbulence within the party after a series of interviews by former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, accusing the party of unfair treatment against her and some other members.

A former Member of Parliament for Obuasi East, Edward Michael Ennin, has called for the summoning of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to the disciplinary committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He expressed the view that the former president allegedly orchestrated the removal of key figures from the party, including Paul Afoko, a former national chairman, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former general secretary.
Speaking on Asempa FM on Saturday, March 22, 2025, Ennin stated that Akufo-Addo should be the one summoned before the committee for investigation and possible punishment regarding how these individuals were removed from the party, rather than the party attempting to silence disgruntled members.
“Is this not the same party where some of the leaders like Akufo-Addo orchestrated the sacking of Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong? The manner in which they sacked these people wasn’t right but why haven’t they addressed that issue? They should also summon Akufo-Addo to the disciplinary committee to answer for how they used the constitution to sack these people. The way they sacked them was it right?” he lamented.
The former lawmaker expressed regret over the loss of some founding and prominent figures from the party.
He urged the party leadership to rise above greediness and avoid causing pain to its members in their efforts to serve and remain loyal to an individual.
He stated that such actions could further deepen the divisions within the party and drive more people away.
“No one is bigger in the party than others. Today we have lost all our leaders. The likes of Wereko-Brobbey and Kwame Mpianim toiled for this party but because of Akufo-Addo, all these people have been driven away from the party. Are we serving one person or what?”.
Edward Ennin was making a submission regarding the NPP’s decision to refer the former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, to the disciplinary committee for what the party describes as exhibiting anti-party conduct.
Meanwhile, Paul Afoko, who served as the NPP’s national chairman from April 2014, faced suspension in October 2015 alongside General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong and Second Vice Chairperson Sammy Crabbe.
The party cited actions deemed detrimental to its political fortunes as the reason for their suspension.
The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reintroducing a technologically advanced tolling system to generate revenue for road infrastructure development.
To this end, the minister has announced that Ghana will soon launch its own electronic tolling system, with the ambitious goal of establishing “the best road tolling system in Africa.”
“We are not settling for anything less than excellence,” he stated, emphasising the importance of innovation and expressing the government’s determination to dispel any doubts regarding the reintroduction of tolls.
Agbodza made these remarks in Accra on Tuesday during a courtesy call by the Turkish Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Hüseyin Güngör.
He noted that the ministry is currently in the process of obtaining approval from the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) to select a transaction advisor.
“Transparency is a priority, and we welcome all capable organisations to participate in the selection process. We want the best technical and financial proposal that will enable us to operate a highly sustainable tolling system,” he stated.
The minister assured the public that his ministry would keep them informed about the progress of the tolling system’s development and the selection process for the transaction advisor.
“In a few days, the advertisement for the selection of the transaction advisor should be out. Together, we will pave the way for a brighter future in road infrastructure,” he added.
The discussions also explored opportunities for Turkish investors to contribute to the country’s road infrastructure development through the government’s flagship programme, “The Big Push.”
Mr. Agbodza further highlighted the potential for technical cooperation between the two nations and invited Turkish engineers to share their expertise in tolling systems.
“We are ready to collaborate and learn from successful models, particularly those in Turkey that utilise technology instead of traditional toll booths. Our partnership could lay a strong foundation for Ghana’s new tolling system, ensuring it is both efficient and sustainable,” he concluded.

A man says that his girlfriend is mad he’s going on a work trip without her — but he’s not so sure he did anything wrong.
The 25-year-old detailed his story on the popular Reddit forum “Am I the A——?” in order to get input and advice from his fellow Redditors. In the post, the man explains that he and his 24-year-old girlfriend work remotely for the same company. However, he says that while he is interested in making the most of the opportunity and eventually moving ahead, his girlfriend has “no desire in doing more than necessary to get the minimum raise each year.” He also says that she “is living with her parents” and is “deeply in debt” due to overspending on non-essentials.
The Reddit user then goes on to explain that he “recently came up with some money” and wants to use it to travel to Canada in order to visit his company and network in person.
“[It] is something [I’m] really excited about,” he added.
However, the man says that when he told his girlfriend about his plan, “she began crying” and claimed he didn’t “care about her.” He also says she insisted that “couples should have trips together or not at all.”

The man’s fellow Redditors were quick to assure him that he should not feel guilty about taking a work trip — or any trip — without his significant other.
“NTA [not the a——],” wrote one commenter. “You are an adult, and a separate entity from her. You are allowed to travel alone wherever and whenever you want. Plus, you have catered to her financially more than is necessary. You are her boyfriend, not a parent who has to cater to her every need and not go anywhere without her.”

“NTA. I’ve been with my partner for 19 years and we travel separately often, even if it’s just a weekend away to visit family. All or nothing is not a healthy way to maintain a relationship,” added someone else.
Another person recommended that the OP think long and hard about whether his girlfriend is the right partner for him and his long-term goals.
“NTA [not the a——],” they wrote, adding, “Your girlfriend is immature and sounds insufferable. This is a work trip, not a social one for you and will help with your career. I don’t know how long you’ve been dating but this is a huge red flag. Not to mention that she can’t [even] budget her money […]. Go on the business trip and rethink your relationship while you’re away.”
We’ll Divide The Party Like CPP If Anyone Tries To Impose A Flagbearer On Us in 2028- NPP Elder Warn
News Hub Creator3h
A senior member of the New Patriotic Party and former Member of Parliament, Hon. Kwadwo Adjei Darko, has warned that the party risks becoming like the Convention People’s Party (CPP) if certain individuals within the party attempt to impose a flagbearer on the party in the 2028 elections.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Kurkurantumi program, Hon. Adjei dismissed the influence of Prof. Mike Oquaye’s election report, stating that it cannot be used to push the party into endorsing a candidate against the will of members. He said there are some people are also conducting report secretly and will be used to compare the work of Mike Oquaye.
“Where we’ve reached, we will not allow anybody to impose a flagbearer on the party. The imposition of a flagbearer will result in inevitable division. Unlike previous years when people were imposed on us, this time, if anyone tries that, the party will become like CPP” he warned.
He attributed the party’s internal struggles to the creation of a super delegate system, which he believes has been used as a tool for manipulation. According to him, the sacking of former NPP chairman Paul Afoko and ex-General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong after President Kufour’s tenure marked the beginning of the party’s internal issues.
He said upto date no one has been able to give reasons why those people were sacked. He therefore called for electoral reforms within the party, advocating for a system that prioritise the voices of constituents over select delegates.
“We were planning that our electoral college system should focus on the constituent’s voice rather than delegates. Leaders must sit and check where we can review the constitution to allow more members involvement.” He said.

Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticized the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the constituency for allegedly locking up a public toilet facility belonging to the Effutu community.
According to the Minority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament, the situation has denied many residents and school children where the toilet is situated with access to a decent public place of convenience.
The Member of Parliament laments the growing concerns from the community to have the 10-seater public toilet which was built in 2016 in honour of the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills opened to the public.
Afenyo-Markin who was speaking at the commissioning of a six-unit classroom block for Effutu AME Zion A, B, C noted that although the toilet facility is situated on the compound of the school, students resort to open defecation in the bushes.
“Director of Education, I want to appeal to you and the head teacher of the school including the assemblyman to take action on this matter. I understand that it’s a 10-seater toilet facility and does not augur well to see it closed. The Police must be involved in this fight to ensure that the toilet is given back to the student and the community,” the Effutu Legislator said.
“Ghana’s democracy has gotten to a level where we need not engage in such a shameful act. I am also ready to support,” Afenyo-Markin said.
Headmaster of AME Zion Basic A, B, C Raymond Abban-Baidoo lamented the struggle endured by teachers and students alike, adding that teachers are sometimes forced to go home to attend to a place of convenience which affects teaching hours.
“We are grateful to the MP for the construction of the six-unit classroom block but like Oliver Twist said we will still ask for me. The school is faced with a serious challenge of a place of convenience. The primary sections are using the compound as their toilet place, the Upper Primary and JHS have been going to the lagoon and the bush.
“Teachers go home when the need arises and this is affecting teaching and learning. We are pleading with the stakeholders gathered here to build a new one or if possible renovate the old one to save the over one thousand one hundred and fifteen learners from a cholera outbreak,” Raymond Abban-Baidoo said.

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority, Edudzi Tameklo has criticised the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, accusing him of exploiting parliamentary immunity to make defamatory statements against National Security operatives.
He argued that Afenyo-Markin is strategically using his privileged position in Parliament to make unsubstantiated claims that would otherwise be legally questionable.
The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources has raised alarm over the devastating state of Ghana’s forest reserves, revealing that 44 out of the country’s 288 forest reserves have been completely destroyed.
He disclosed that a recent assessment categorised some forests as critically endangered, using a colour-coded system where nine reserves were marked in red and yellow, signaling severe degradation.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews‘ The Pulse on Saturday, the Minister stressed that the fight is not just for the government or the Ministry of Lands, but for all Ghanaians—including traditional leaders, media, and youth groups.
He highlighted the urgent need for national engagement and education, emphasising that water bodies and forests must be protected as they are vital for the country’s survival.
The Minister also outlined a multi-pronged approach to tackling the crisis, focusing on: strengthening enforcement measures, public engagement and education, promoting alternative livelihoods, reclamation and re-vegetation efforts.
He reiterated that the government is collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture and other agencies to empower the youth through sustainable initiatives.

A leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Said Sinare, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to ensure protection for the embattled former lawmaker for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, against what he describes as political retribution from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Sinare’s appeal follows recent revelations by Adwoa Safo, a former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, about internal party pressures and alleged underhand dealings within the ruling NPP.
Speaking to journalists, Sinare emphasized the need to safeguard individuals who expose internal wrongdoing, arguing that whistleblowers like Adwoa Safo play a crucial role in strengthening democratic accountability.
“We cannot sit back and watch as the reckless NPP victimizes one of its own simply for telling the truth. If Adwoa Safo is being persecuted for exposing their internal rot, then it is a clear sign of the vindictive nature of the former government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I urge President Mahama and all well-meaning Ghanaians to stand with her,” he stated.
Adwoa Safo recently revealed details of alleged coercion and mistreatment by top government officials, further deepening tensions within the party.
Sinare further cautioned that targeting individuals for speaking out sets a dangerous precedent for Ghana’s democracy.
Assuring Ghanaians that the government of President John Dramani Mahama will protect whistleblowers in the NPP, he urged civil society groups to condemn any acts of political intimidation against Adwoa Safo and others facing similar threats.
Law lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, has challenged the legality of the search conducted on the residence of the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison.
According to Prof. Appiagyei-Atua, the manner in which the search was carried out raises critical legal and ethical questions that must be addressed to ensure accountability and transparency in law enforcement procedures.
The search, which took place on Wednesday, March 19, was carried out by operatives of the National Security.
In defense of the operation, the Deputy Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, stated that the search was conducted lawfully, in accordance with Ghanaian legal provisions regarding searches and seizures.
He asserted that the authorities involved had followed the necessary legal framework, and therefore, there was no cause for alarm.
However, speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, March 22, Prof. Appiagyei-Atua pushed back against this defense, arguing that the legality of the operation could not simply be taken at face value without further clarification.
He insisted that the Deputy Attorney General had a duty to provide a more detailed explanation of the legal basis for the search, including the exact process by which authorization was obtained.
“The Deputy Attorney General would have done us a lot of good by confirming how the legality of the searches came about. If he went to a particular magistrate court to secure the search warrant because if he is talking about the legality of the search that happened at the former Bank of Ghana Governor’s home, one of the key legal requirement will be obtaining the search warrant from a court and if that is established, then what is the scope of the search warrant?
“The processes involved should also be transparent because we have seen accusations of theft and misdemeanors committed by the team that went to conduct the search and the whole issue about the CCTV equipment being taken away. That is also a big issue.”

A brewing controversy has emerged over the ownership of GhanaWeb, one of Ghana’s leading online news platforms, following claims that the website was acquired under questionable circumstances, allegedly to benefit the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections.
On February 22, 2023, AfricaWeb Holding BV, the parent company of GhanaWeb, was sold to Protec Innovations Ltd.
The Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwah, has expressed deep disappointment over the government’s decision to amend, rather than revoke, Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, which permits mining in Ghana’s forest reserves.
She recalled that while in opposition, President John Mahama made a firm commitment to revoke L.I. 2462 entirely, acknowledging the destructive impact of mining on the country’s forests and water bodies.
“We believe the minister means well, but we are greatly disappointed. When His Excellency, the President, was in opposition, he clearly stated that he would revoke L.I. 2462. He was fully aware that certain companies had already made investments, yet he prioritized the greater good of Ghanaians and the protection of our forests.
“Now, instead of revocation, we are hearing about amendments, which still allow mining in forest reserves,” she said.
Madam Serwah criticised the L.I. for weakening previous protections. Under the old law, mining in production forest reserves was restricted to only 2% of the land. However, L.I. 2462 has removed that limitation, allowing mining companies almost unrestricted access to these vital ecosystems.
“This is a very bad law. It was passed without proper consultation—clandestinely. If someone says they would put their presidency on the line, yet things only get worse, then we must ask: What real difference does this amendment make compared to a full revocation?” she questioned.
The Lands Minister has defended the L.I., arguing that it grants environmental officers the authority to assess and prevent illegal mining. However, Serwah dismissed this justification, insisting that existing forestry laws already mandate the protection of Ghana’s forests.
“We are being misled. The L.I. 2462 is not what ensures protection. The Forestry Commission already has a duty to safeguard our forests. Revoking this law would not remove environmental officers’ ability to do their jobs—it would reinforce the need for stricter enforcement,” she asserted.

Ghanaian media personality and failed Guinness World Record contender Afua Asantewaa has responded to speculations linking her recent weight loss to the ongoing controversies surrounding her.
In a post shared on her Tiktok handle, Asantewaa clarified that her transformation is the result of her efforts to regain her shape after childbirth, not the stress from recent public scrutiny.
She shared, “I posted a picture yesterday about my weight loss, and it’s quite interesting how people were like, ‘Oh, this brouhaha that is going on has caused her to lose weight.’
“No, it’s not about that. Those who know me know that after having my beautiful three girls, I have been working so hard,” she said.
Asantewaa said she preferred natural weight loss methods over medicinal or surgical methods, stating, “I always say that I’m the type that is scared of injections and surgery stuff. So this BBL thing is not my thing. I rather prefer losing weight the right way.”
She revealed that she has been religiously working on her fitness since November of last year, successfully moving from a size 14 to a size 12, with her sights set on a size 10.
Addressing the rumours, she added, “I know what weight loss does for me, and so it’s not about any brouhaha.”
She also expressed gratitude for the support of her family, particularly her mother, who has helped her stay grounded during these challenging times.
Asantewaa assured her followers that she would address the controversies at the appropriate time, stating, “At the right time, this will be addressed.”
Afua Asantewaa has been under fire following comments she made over financial support she received during her 2023 Guinness World Record sing-a-thon attempt.
Asantewaa had initially denied receiving any government support, stating that she only received sore throat medicine after her attempt.
However, after being called out, she clarified receiving GH₵10,000 from Vice President Dr. Bawumia as a personal donation.

Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, Convenor of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining
Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, Convenor of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, has called on President John Mahama to fully repeal L.I 2462.
Sharing his thoughts on TV3 on Saturday, March 22, Dr Kenneth Ashigbey argued that any partial review of the law would be a piecemeal approach to fighting illegal mining otherwise known as galamsey.
Dr. Ashigbey’s call coincides with the environment ministry’s tabling of a bill in Parliament on Thursday, March 21, 2025 to repeal the LI that mandates the president to grant mining licenses in forest reserves.
In accordance with Article 11(7) of the Constitution, the Instrument comes into effect after 21 sitting days of Parliament unless it is annulled by the votes of two-thirds of Members of Parliament (MPs).
The move forms part of broad measures by the government to address the illegal mining menace, which has been harshly criticized by Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and a section of the public.
“I think the president has shown enough good faith since assuming office. But, when it comes to galamsey, the president is not walking the talk.
“Look, I have several videos of the president promising to repeal the LI during the campaign period, so to now decide to remove some of the regulations in the law is a bit problematic,” Dr Ashigbey added.
According to Dr. Ashigbey, substantial efforts are required from both the government and the citizenry to minimize illegal mining, which is causing severe damage to water bodies in the country.
Minister of Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor with some stakeholders at the forum
The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has launched a two-day National Clean Cooking Policy and Strategy Workshop to tackle public health concerns and environmental degradation.
The event brings together a diverse group of stakeholders, including policy experts, industry leaders, and development partners, marking a significant step in Ghana’s efforts to promote clean cooking solutions.
Delivering the keynote address, Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, highlighted the substantial challenges of household cooking in Ghana, where nearly 60% of the population relies on traditional solid fuels such as charcoal and firewood.
He noted that this dependence leads to approximately 6,500 deaths annually due to household air pollution, with children under five being particularly vulnerable.
He stressed the socio-economic toll of inefficient cooking methods, particularly on women and children, who face the burdens of fuel collection and health risks.
To address these issues, the Ministry introduced the proposed National Clean Cooking Policy (NCCP), which aims to establish a structured framework for promoting clean cooking solutions across the country.
The policy will support a diversified clean cooking energy mix, including Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), electric stoves, biogas, and improved biomass cookstoves.
Mr Jinapor explained that the NCCP would provide regulatory and fiscal incentives to boost investment in the sector and support local industry development to ensure the affordability and availability of clean cooking technologies.
He also emphasised the need for public awareness campaigns to drive behavioural change toward cleaner cooking solutions.
The minister further announced the revision of the National Clean Cooking Strategy (NCCS) and the accompanying Investment Prospectus (IP), which will outline a clear roadmap for implementation.
These documents will define stakeholder roles, responsibilities, and the financial resources required to scale up clean cooking adoption.
He urged participants at the workshop to engage in meaningful discussions and offer innovative solutions that move Ghana from policy formulation to tangible action.
“Achieving universal access to clean cooking is not solely the responsibility of the government; it requires a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach,” he stated.
Chief Director of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Wilhelmina Asamoah, welcomed participants and underscored the workshop’s focus on inclusiveness and addressing local realities.
“This workshop provides a platform for open dialogue, knowledge sharing, and strategic collaboration over the next two days,” she said.
She noted that this engagement is the first of three planned regional workshops, gathering insights from representatives across Ghana’s southern, middle, and northern regions.
Expressing appreciation to the World Bank for its ongoing support of Ghana’s clean cooking agenda, she acknowledged its critical role in advancing key policy initiatives.
Participants were encouraged to contribute actively to discussions and work collectively towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Dormaahene Osagyefo Dr. Agyemang Badu has strongly opposed Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s intention to elevate the Fiapre Traditional Council to paramountcy as reported by Ghana Web.
Speaking to the media on March 21, 2025, Dormaahene challenged the Asantehene’s authority on the matter, insisting that Fiapre falls under his jurisdiction.
He warned that if the elevation happens, he would step down as Dormaahene immediately.
“I challenge the Asantehene… if he elevates the Fiapre stool to paramountcy, I will abdicate the throne,” he declared.
He questioned how Otumfuo could make such a decision while he, the Dormaahene, remains in power.
According to him, paramountcy is a title that should not be granted without proper legal backing, and any such move would require presidential approval.
“How can you make such a pronouncement while I’m still alive? As for that, Asantehene, you can’t do it. What authority do you’ve as a manhene.
His comments come after Otumfuo, during an Asanteman Council meeting on March 17, 2025, announced plans to elevate four divisional councils in the Bono and Ahafo Regions, including Fiapre.
The Asantehene asserted that he alone holds the authority to make this decision.
Meanwhile, the Fiapre Traditional Council has been seeking paramountcy status for years.
In 2024, they reaffirmed their alignment with the Asanteman, citing past attempts to gain recognition through the Bono House of Chiefs, which did not succeed.
The debate over jurisdiction and chieftaincy rights continues, with tensions rising between the Bono and Asante traditional leaders.
The Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II, has appealed to John Dramani Mahama to rename the Tamale International Airport as Gbewaa International Airport.
His appeal comes in response to the renaming of the facility to Yakubu Tali International Airport ahead of the 2024 general elections, a decision that was taken without his endorsement.
This request was conveyed in a speech delivered on his behalf by Zangbalin Lana, Dr. Yakubu Mahama, during the President’s thank-you tour of the Northern Region on Saturday, March 22.
Beyond the call for renaming the airport, Yaa Naa Abukari II urged the government to commence Phase Three of the Tamale International Airport project, which has stalled following the completion of Phase Two.
He emphasized that the final phase, which includes the construction of a high terminal, is crucial to elevating the facility to a world-class standard.
“We want to entreat you to start Phase Three of the project so that the airport can handle all that it was intended to do, including ensuring the humane handling of our citizens. Such a huge investment must be appreciated by the people it serves. In consultation with the Nayiri and the Bimbilla Naa, we want the airport to be renamed Gbewaa International Airport,” she stated.
Additionally, he called on the government to revive and complete outstanding E-Blocks in the region to improve educational infrastructure.
He also reminded the President of his campaign promise to establish a School of Surveying in honour of the Kumbungu Lana, a retired surveyor.
The overload further highlighted the deteriorating state of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, stressing the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul to ensure the facility delivers quality healthcare to residents of the Northern Region and beyond.
Security expert Col. Festus Aboagye (rtd) has disclosed that monitoring devices were discovered at the residence of former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison.
According to Ghana Web, These devices, he claimed, were connected to the Central Bank, allowing surveillance of activities within the institution.
Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points on March 22, 2025, Col. Aboagye stated, “He had wired his place with what we call backdoor electronic devices,” emphasizing that such monitoring amounted to spying.
He stated that while this might have been standard during Addison’s tenure, it was no longer necessary since he had left office.
According to him, the operation was carried out based on intelligence gathered by security agencies.
The objective of the search was to retrieve these surveillance tools, as their continued use raised concerns. “As far as I’m concerned, that was the objective of that search,” he added.
Dr. Addison resigned two months ahead of his expected retirement in March. Col. Aboagye questioned why the surveillance system remained operational after his departure, suggesting it should have been disconnected.
On March 19, 2025, National Security operatives conducted a raid on Addison’s residence. Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai defended the operation, stating it was legally sanctioned.
Reports indicated that among the findings were CCTV cameras linked to the BoG.
The revelations have sparked discussions about security protocols for former top officials and the implications of unauthorized surveillance beyond one’s term in office.
The Italian ambassador to Accra, Laura Ranalli, recently visited the offices of Eni Ghana, where she engaged in fruitful discussions with managing director Maurizio Pinna and his team. This visit, held on March 21, 2025, highlighted Eni’s substantial involvement in Ghana’s energy sector, particularly in oil and gas exploration and production, as well as refining and chemicals, which take place primarily off the Ghanaian coast.
Eni Ghana is not merely an oil and gas entity; it actively participates in social initiatives that enhance local resources. The company has implemented several programs focused on micro-entrepreneurship training, improving access to water resources, and providing education and health protection. One of its significant contributions includes distributing improved cookers to local communities, aimed at ensuring access to efficient energy sources and reducing wood and charcoal consumption in cooking, thereby positively impacting the environment.
In a separate yet equally notable event, President John Dramani Mahama honored two elderly craftsmen, Agya Akwasi Agyei and Kwaku Appiah, who are credited with the design of the Hwedom, the presidential seat of Ghana’s Fourth Republic. This meeting, which took place in Kumasi, showcased not only Mahama’s respect for cultural heritage but also his recognition of the invaluable contributions of artisans in Ghana.
The Hwedom is more than just a seat; it is a symbol of the life and sovereignty of Ghana, intricately carved from wood and adorned with gold and traditional Ghanaian adinkra symbols. The president’s visit was captured on a video shared on TikTok by a local radio station, which quickly garnered attention and praise from Ghanaians, celebrating this gesture as a long-overdue recognition of the craftsmen.
During the meeting, Mahama presented the two craftsmen with envelopes containing undisclosed amounts of money as tokens of appreciation for their work. The visit also included prominent members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region, including PV Jantuah and Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who accompanied the president as he exchanged pleasantries with the artisans.
Despite the importance of recognizing local talent, it was noted that Agya Akwasi Agyei and Kwaku Appiah had not been properly celebrated since they created the presidential stool many years ago.
As Ghana moves forward in various sectors, including its commitment to sustainable practices, it is also paving the way for international collaborations in the energy sector. The nation is poised to transfer its first International Transfer of Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) by the second half of 2025, symbolizing its dedication to environmental responsibility and innovation in energy management strategies.
Such advancements illustrate Ghana’s multifaceted approach to growth and development, addressing energy sustainability while simultaneously preserving and honoring its cultural heritage. The entrepreneurial spirit fostered by companies like Eni Ghana, combined with governmental recognition of local artisans, paints a promising picture for the nation’s socio-economic landscape.

Accra, March 21, GNA – Mr Simon Asare, a sports writer at the Ghana News Agency, has been shortlisted for this year’s International Sports Press Association (AIPS) Sport Media Awards.
Mr Asare, who is a member of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), was nominated for Best Colour Piece.
His shortlisted piece, “Saving the Game: A Clarion Call for Sports Associations to Sign Onto UN’s Sports or Climate Action Framework”, looked into how climate change affected sporting activities in Ghana.
The issue acquired significant attention in the sports media scene, particularly in Ghana, with stakeholders discussing ways to mitigate the destructive impact of climate change on the growth of Ghanaian sports.
If he successfully qualifies for the second phase, Mr Asare would be in contention for a podium finish during the awards ceremony to be held in Rabat, Morocco, from May 13-16, 2025.
It will be the first time the awards ceremony will be held in Africa, with journalists from all five continents set to be honoured for their work during the year of review.
On top of the winners, the ceremony will also unveil the Special Commendations for some of the highlighted works, regardless of their final position. GNA
Stormzy has been nominated for an honorary degree alongside one of the most decorated British female Olympians, Dame Katherine Grainger.
In 2018 the musician, whose real name is Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr, launched a scholarship programme for black students at the University of Cambridge.
The institution said he would receive a doctorate in law in recognition of his philanthropic work and impact on education, music, sport and literature.
Eight people will be recognised by the university, including Dame Katherine, the first female chair of the British Olympic Association.
Cambridge University said the “Stormzy effect” had contributed to an increase in applications to the university from black students across the UK.
The Stormzy Scholarship funds two black British students per year at Cambridge, covering their tuition fees and maintenance costs.
It was later expanded when HSBC UK agreed to fund a further 10 students per year.
The university said 55 students had been supported by a Stormzy Scholarship so far, and this year would see the largest group to date graduate.
Dame Katherine will also receive a doctorate in law from the university.
She is currently chancellor of the University of Glasgow and is the only British woman to have won a medal at five successive Olympic Games.
All eight of those recommended have accepted the honorary doctorate nomination, subject to final approval by the university’s governing body.
They will be admitted to their degrees on 25 June, presided by vice-chancellor Prof Deborah Prentice.
An honorary doctorate in letters will be granted to Sir Simon Russell Beale, who is an honorary fellow of Gonville and Caius College, where he studied for his undergraduate degree.
Political activist, philosopher and author Professor Angela Davis will also receive a doctorate in letters.
The founder and director of the Cambridge Singers, Sir John Rutter, whose work has been performed all over the world, will be granted a doctorate in music.
Lady Arden of Heswall, the former justice of the UK’s Supreme Court and an honorary fellow of Girton College, will receive a doctorate in law.
She was the first female judge assigned to the Chancery Division at the High Court of Justice.
The Nobel Prize-winning economist Sir Oliver Hart will receive a doctorate in science.
Professor Maria Leptin, the president of the European Research Council, will be conferred with a doctorate in medical science.
Security expert, Col. Festus Boahen Aboagye (rtd), has revealed that some monitoring devices were retrieved at the residence of the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison.
According to him, some cables were found that connected surveillance devices to the Central Bank.
While noting that this may be the standard procedure by the governor during his term of office, he is no longer required to “spy” on activities at the Central Bank since he is no longer at post.
Col Aboagye speaking on TV3’s, The Key Points on March 22, 2025, said: “He had wired his place with what we call backdoor electronic devices. There are devices in this house, wired to the Bank of Ghana, which enables you to monitor what goes on in the bank.
“In fact, monitoring is a very diplomatic word. This is spying, this is surveillance, and the state has not authorised anybody in the form of a former Bank of Ghana Governor to mount surveillance on the premises of the Bank of Ghana,” he added.
The security expert noted that it is based on this intelligence that the operation happened, adding that the objective of the search was to retrieve those devices.
“That was the intelligence that the state had. And as the Deputy Attorney General explained, they needed a plan to go. So the wires that we saw were the wires into the device. As far as I’m concerned, that was the objective of that search,” he added.
The governor tendered an early resignation two months before his expected retirement in March.
Col Aboagye said: “His retirement was this March but he is no longer serving at the Bank of Ghana so he should have disconnected those devices. Why was he still having them?”
National Security Operatives on March 19, 2025, conducted an operation at the home of former Bank of Governor, Ernest Addison.
According to the Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, the search was lawfully conducted.
However, there were reports that CCTV cameras connected to the Bank of Ghana were found in the home of the former governor.

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Ransford Gyampo
Professor Ransford Gyampo has assured the business community that the Mahama-led government is taking decisive steps to lower the cost of doing business in Ghana.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority mentioned this on TV3’s KeyPoints, highlighting ongoing inter-agency collaborations aimed at identifying and eliminating unnecessary cost drivers, particularly in the shipping sector.
“There have been several interagency collaborations to identify some of the needless factors that accentuate the cost of doing business in Ghana,” he stated.
According to Professor Gyampo, the government is fully committed to ensuring that businesses, especially shipping lines, experience a more cost-effective and efficient operating environment.
He emphasized that the administration is determined to implement policies to ease the burden on businesses and enhance Ghana’s attractiveness as a trade hub.
“…We are fired up to do more to bring down the cost of doing business… very soon shippers will see the tangible outcomes of the interagency collaboration,” he assured.
His remarks signal the government’s renewed focus on addressing economic challenges and improving the business climate.
Boxing heavyweight legend George Foreman has died aged 76.
Known as Big George in the ring, the American built one of the most remarkable and enduring careers in the sport, winning Olympic gold in 1968 and claiming the world heavyweight title twice, 21 years apart – the second making him the oldest champion in history aged 45.
He lost his first title to Muhammad Ali in their famous Rumble in the Jungle fight in 1974. But overall, he boasted an astonishing total of 76 wins including 68 knockouts, almost double that of Ali.
Foreman retired in 1997 but not before he agreed to put his name to a best-selling grill – a decision that went on to bring him fortunes that dwarfed his boxing earnings.
His family said in a post on Instagram on Friday night: “Our hearts are broken. A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose.”
The statement added: “A humanitarian, an Olympian, and two time heavyweight champion of the world, He was deeply respected – a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name – for his family.”
Tributes poured in from others across the sport, with former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson saying Foreman’s “contribution to boxing and beyond will never be forgotten”.
The Ring magazine, often dubbed the Bible of Boxing, described him as “one of the greatest heavyweights of all time”.
“[He] will be remembered as an icon of the sport forever.”
Foreman was born in Marshall, Texas, on 10 January 1949, and raised along with six siblings by a single mother in the segregated American South.
He dropped out of school and turned to street robberies before eventually finding his outlet in the ring.
Foreman won the heavyweight gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, aged 19, before turning pro and winning 37 consecutive matches. He lost only five bouts over his career.
He beat previously undefeated reigning champion Joe Frazier in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1973 knocking him down six times in the first two rounds.
His 1974 Rumble in the Jungle against Ali in Kinshasa, Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, remains one of the most famous boxing matches ever.
Ali, the older man, was the underdog after he was stripped of his crown seven years earlier for refusing to be drafted into the Vietnam War.
Foreman reflected on the legendary fight 50 years later in an October interview with BBC World Service Newshour, explaining that everyone thought he was going to decimate Ali.
“Oh, he’s not going to last one round,” the boxer said experts were predicting at the time.
Foreman told the BBC he typically would get “real nervous” and have “butterflies” before any boxing match, but that night – it was the “most comfortable” he had felt.
But the wily Ali used a tactic that later became known as “rope-a-dope”, which wore out Foreman, causing him to throw out hundreds of punches before Ali unloaded on him in the eighth round and scored a knockout.
After a second professional loss, Foreman retired in 1977 and became an ordained minister at the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Texas, which he founded and built.
He told the BBC his defeat to Ali became the “best thing that ever happened to me” as it ultimately led him to “get my message out” through preaching.
He recalled that his preaching started small, on street corners and with friends, then grew.
“We began meeting informally at various homes in Houston, and before long, the crowds became too large for most houses to accommodate,” Foreman said on his website.
“Eventually, we bought a piece of land and an old, dilapidated building on the north-east side of Houston.”
Foreman came out of retirement in 1987 to raise money for a youth centre he founded. He won 24 matches before losing to Evander Holyfield after 12 rounds in 1991.
In 1994, Foreman knocked out undefeated Michael Moorer to become the oldest ever heavyweight champion at age 45.
He became ad pitchman for his George Foreman Grill, which millions have purchased since it hit the market in 1994, thanks in part to his memorable catchphrase, the “Lean Mean Grilling Machine”.
Foreman was married five times. He has a dozen children, including five sons who are all named George.
He explained on his website that he named them after himself so they “they would always have something in common”.
“I say to them, ‘If one of us goes up, then we all go up together,” he explained. “And if one goes down, we all go down together!'”

A Sudanese army spokesperson gives a statement on Sudan TV
Sudan’s army has reclaimed the Presidential Palace in the capital, Khartoum, in a significant victory over a rampaging militia that controls swaths of the war-torn country.
The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have viciously scrambled for territory since fighting broke out between them in April 2023.
The conflict has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises and has left more than 28,000 people dead with 11 million others forced to flee their homes, according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data initiative.
The RSF has laid siege to Khartoum and the Sudanese seat of power since the start of the war. On Friday, the government said its troops had seized control of the Presidential Palace and would continue its push to retake the capital.
“Today the flag is raised, the palace is back, and the journey continues until victory is complete,” information minister Khalid Al-Aiser wrote on X.
The Sudanese justice ministry hailed the “liberation of the Republican Palace,” describing it as “a symbol of national sovereignty.”
Activist Hala Al-Karib told CNN that the recapture of the palace was crucial for the military and also for people displaced by the conflict.
“It is quite significant for SAF and central and north Sudanese possibilities of IDPs return,” she said, adding that some questions, however, remained answered.
“The question of Sudan’s governance and to what extent SAF is open to a political process with RSF and other political actors or continues with the war remains a question.”
Photos of government troops celebrating at the palace were shared on social media by the military.
“Our forces … completely destroyed the enemy’s personnel and equipment and seized large quantities of its equipment and weapons,” a military spokesperson said Friday morning in a televised broadcast.
Later on Friday, the RSF said in a Telegram post that “the battle for the Republican Palace is not over yet,” adding that its forces “are still present in the vicinity of the area” and had “carried out a swift military operation targeting a gathering … inside the Republican Palace, killing more than 89 enemy personnel and destroying various military vehicles.”
Local media reported that the palace was hit by a drone, killing an unknown number of soldiers, as well as journalists from the state broadcaster.
Parts of Khartoum are still held by the RSF militia which controls the country’s western, southern and central regions, including Darfur where ethnically motivated killings are common. The SAF administers the eastern and northern parts of the country.
Retaking Khartoum would be symbolic for the SAF whose rival the RSF had begun steps to establish a parallel government. But it would also come at a great cost for the Sudanese people as civilians are often caught in the crossfire.
“Dozens of civilians, including local humanitarian volunteers, have been killed by artillery shelling and aerial bombardment by the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces in eastern Khartoum and north Omdurman since 12 March,” a spokesperson for the United Nations Human Rights Office, Seif Magango, said Thursday as fighting intensified in the capital.
Sudan’s warring parties have each been accused of war crimes. In January, the United States accused the RSF of committing genocide, the second in the country in two decades.
This month, a new report from UNICEF also linked the SAF to atrocities that included sexual violence against young children, some as young as one.
“Credible reports indicate that the RSF and allied militia have raided homes in eastern Khartoum, carrying out summary killings and arbitrary detentions, and looted food and medical supplies from community kitchens and medical clinics,” Magango added. “SAF and affiliated fighters are also reported to have engaged in looting and other criminal activities in areas they control in Khartoum North (Bahri) and East Nile. Widespread arbitrary arrests are ongoing in East Nile.”
Kofi Adoma Is Responsible For Late Lumba’s Death- Black Power Shockingly Alleges
News Hub Creator1d
Ghanaian traditional priest Black Power has made a sensational claim regarding the mysterious death of his late brother, Junior Daddy Lumba.
In an interview with Razak Ghana, as monitored by Gh Page, Black Power did not hold back, alleging that journalist Kofi Adoma has knowledge of what truly led to Lumba’s demise.
He outright rejected the explanations provided by Kofi Adoma and others, referring to them as “cock and bull stories” that did not add up.
Black Power insisted that if anyone should be questioned about his brother’s death, it should be Kofi Adoma.
He further claimed that Lumba’s passing was not as Adoma had made it seem, hinting that the journalist has secrets he is concealing.
Issuing a bold challenge, Black Power demanded that Adoma confess the truth or suffer the consequences, warning that the gods would punish him if he remained silent.
Furthermore, he stated that he is behind the difficulties Kofi Adoma is currently facing, implying that he played a role in his misfortunes.
