‘Second leg will be cagey’published at 22:28 British Summer Time

FT: Tottenham 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, speaking to TNT Sports: “I can’t ask any more of the lads. It was disappointing to concede the way we did, fair strike to the lad [Hugo Ekitike].

“Even before that I thought we were well in control of the game. I thought it would bare fruit in the second half and it did in every aspect but goals.”

On the first goal: “Dom’s [Solanke] done awfully well to hold it up, [James] Madders is really good in the box, you try and get him in those areas and then its about attacking the near post.

“It’s a great finish to be fair to him [Pedro Porro].

“For us, the biggest blow we had was conceding so early. That kind of played into their hands, I always felt we’d finish the game strong.

“On any other night we go away with a comfortable victory. We have to go there and we knew it would get decided in the second tie. If we repeat that performance we give ourselves a chance.

“I don’t expect the second game to be to open, it’ll be cagey affair and it’ll come down to moments.

“The second leg is going to be tight for sure, it might even go to extra-time, we’re going to need all the lads ready to go. The good thing is we have most of them back and healthy which is important.”

NPP will be better if the ‘demons’ are evicted from the party – Professor Frimpong Boateng

0

Former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng has called for the removal of what he terms “bad elements” with the New Patriotic Party.

He expects all party executives to resign for bad leadership which he says led the party into a “shameful defeat” in the 2024 elections.

Professor Boateng believes a change in party leadership will restore dignity and trust among the grassroots as well as Ghanaians.

“All the executives must resign for leading the party to an unprecedented defeat; if the demons in the NPP are not removed from their leadership positions, the party will continue to suffer,” he told Nhyira Fm in Kumasi.

The heart surgeon expressed his disappointment in Akufo-Addo’s leadership, describing the former President as “unreceptive and close-minded”.

“Akufo-Addo turned deaf ears to the many pieces of advice I gave him, which could have turned the fortunes. His governance was so disappointing. There are so many people behind the scenes in the NPP who love this country and could perform better, but were sidelined by President Akufo-Addo,” observed Professor Boateng.

He has called on politicians to build the human capacity of the citizenry to increase productivity for exports but not dwell on raising revenue only within the country.

He stressed on the need for the country’s leadership to apply common sense and avoid corruption.

“Good governance is common sense minus corruption; you don’t sit down and accumulate money as a country, you need exports which can be achieved by building a formidable human resource,” said Prof. Boateng.

10% Tariff won’t affect local cocoa industry

0

The United States’ decision to impose a 10% tariff on imports from all countries is expected to have far-reaching consequences on the global economy, affecting multiple sectors.

Among those impacted are major cocoa-producing nations creating a competitive edge for European chocolate companies over their American counterparts.

The 10% tariff, unilaterally announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, targets imports from across the globe, including Ghana.

Affected goods include garments, textiles, cashews, shea butter, fruits, vegetables, yams, and cocoa products. As the world’s second-largest cocoa exporter, Ghana relies heavily on this sector; cocoa alone accounted for 62.1% of the country’s total exports in 2024.

In 2023, Ghana exported $154 million worth of cocoa beans to the United States, making the U.S. a key trade partner.

The new tariff has raised concerns about its impact on national revenue and stakeholders in the cocoa industry.

But Stephenson Anane Boateng, President of the Ghana National Cocoa Farmers Association, believes the local industry may not suffer as much as feared.

“We are the producing country; people are demanding from us, so the tariffs imposed on exportation into the US is not a big deal. We have to add it to our cost” he said.

Stephenson also urged local chocolatiers to consider passing the additional cost from the tariffs on to consumers.

Junior Pope’s wife shares touching tribute one year after his passing

0

One year after the tragic passing of Nollywood actor Junior Pope, his widow, Jennifer Awele Odonwodo, has shared an emotional tribute honoring his memory.

It could be recalled that on April 10, 2024, fans and movie lovers in Nigeria and beyond were left in shock after news broke that Junior Pope died in a boat accident during a film shoot

In her first social media post since his death on April 10, 2025, Jennifer opened up about the profound impact of losing her husband and the struggles of raising their three sons, Jason, Jaden, and Jamon, without him.

“You have no idea how tough it’s been. Trying to stay strong for each other while the world around us feels shattered. The grief is still heavy, and the void you left can never be filled. But through it all, we look to heaven for strength as our guiding light,” she wrote.

Reflecting on the pain of loss, she added, “Oh death, you’ve taught us to live each day as it comes, bearing a pain that never truly fades.”

“Your love surrounds us, your laughter echoes in our hearts, and we feel your presence in the quiet moments when we miss you most.

“I still don’t have the right words to respond to Jason and Jaden wanting to know if Daddy will fulfill his promise of taking them to a football academy.

They said, ‘Daddy told them he wouldn’t miss it for anything in the world.’ Then the littlest one, Jamon (J Papa, as daddy fondly called him), keeps asking when Daddy is bringing the big toy car he promised,” she shared.

Despite the heartache, Jennifer expressed deep gratitude to those who have supported her family over the past year.

“To our beloved, you didn’t just leave us—you left behind countless others who loved you and your work. Though you’re no longer here, you live on in every memory, every smile, and every tear. We will carry you with us always… until we meet again,” she added.

She ended her tribute with a message of faith: “We cannot question God, right? May your soul rest in perfect peace, my love.”

Foreigners must be punished before deportation – A Rocha Ghana

0

A Rocha Ghana has called on the government to ensure that foreign nationals involved in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, face the full rigours of the law before being deported.

This follows the government policy of deporting foreigners immediately they are caught engaging in galamsey.

Speaking on the issue in an interview on Citi FM‘s Eyewitness News on Thursday, April 10, Daryl Bosu, Deputy Director of A Rocha Ghana, criticised the practice of deporting foreigners without holding them accountable for their actions under Ghanaian law.

His remarks highlight concerns over perceived double standards in dealing with foreign and local offenders.

According to Bosu, treating foreign nationals with leniency undermines efforts to combat galamsey effectively and sends the wrong message about accountability.

The environmental advocate emphasised that enforcing legal penalties for offenders, regardless of nationality, is essential to deter illegal activities and uphold the integrity of Ghana’s laws.

Bosu stated, “It is not a solution. The only solution is to make them face the full rigours of the law. Let them serve their terms before you let them go. What about the Ghanaians who are wallowing in our prisons—are they not humans as well?”

IACG launches micro and small business clinics in Takoradi

Chairman IACG, Wilson Tei Chairman IACG, Wilson Tei

The Insurance Awareness Coordinators Group (IACG), led by its Chairman, Wilson Tei, with support from the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), has officially launched the Micro and Small Business Clinics (MSBC) in Takoradi, the Western Regional capital.

According to Tei, this initiative aims to educate market traders and artisans in the Western and Western North Regions on the importance of insurance as a critical tool for risk mitigation.

The MSBC programme, a collaborative effort by key industry stakeholders including the National Insurance Commission (NIC), the regulator; the Ghana Insurers Association (GIA); the Insurance Brokers Association of Ghana (IBAG); and the National Association of Ghana Insurance Agents (NAGIA), seeks to improve insurance penetration and enhance financial security among small-scale business owners.

The launch commenced with the training of facilitators on April 9, 2025, at the GNAT Hall in Takoradi.

The session was led by Kyeame Ghansah, Head of Research at the NIC, with active support from industry representatives.

Also speaking during the training, Prince Peter Quayson of the GIA emphasized the critical role insurance plays in protecting livelihoods, especially for Micro and Small Businesses that are most vulnerable to unforeseen losses.

It was further announced that Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) will be held from April 10 to 16, 2025, across several towns, including Takoradi, Axim, Tarkwa, Asankragua, Agona Nkwanta, Kwesimintsim, Wassa, Sehwi Bekwai, Bogoso, and Sefwi Wiawso.

Ghansah reaffirmed that the IACG is the mandated body responsible for leading insurance awareness campaigns across the country, noting that the MSBC initiative aligns with the group’s broader goal of building resilience within the informal sector through education and advocacy.

The MSBC initiative is expected to serve as a crucial platform for bridging the knowledge gap on insurance products and services among informal sector workers, ensuring that more Ghanaians are protected from financial shocks.

MP criticises ‘no reforms, no election’ campaign

0

The Registrar of Political Parties (RPPs), Judge Francis Mutungi, has criticised the “No Reforms, No Election” campaign spearheaded by the opposition party Chadema, however, stating that it has not violated the Political Parties Act.

He emphasised that the 2025 General Election will proceed as planned.

Judge Mutungi made these remarks on Thursday, April 10, 2025, while speaking to journalists in Dodoma after attending a workshop on preventing and combating corruption in the 2025 General Election.

Organised by the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB), the workshop was attended by Director General Crispin Chalamila.

During the workshop, Mr Chalamila highlighted the challenges, including corruption, which may arise during the election, urging accountability to ensure that Tanzanians elect qualified leaders.

After the workshop, Judge Mutungi said no one can stop the upcoming election through statements at political rallies, which he noted are often interpreted differently by political parties.

“No one can stop the election just by speaking at rallies. Chadema has not broken the law, and when I met with them recently, they assured me they would not break the electoral laws,” said Judge Mutungi.

He added that only the courts can prevent an election, but no one has gone to court on this matter.

He clarified that what is currently happening are political speeches, which are common in rallies and not illegal unless they contain unlawful content.

According to Judge Mutungi, he has not heard of Chadema going to court to challenge the election, despite having lawyers familiar with the correct procedures.

He suggested that Chadema is likely engaged in political propaganda, which does not constitute a criminal act unless it involves illegal statements.

“I will find time to invite them for a more detailed discussion on this matter. Every party has the right to be heard, but not to break the law. We do not expect them to break the law,” insisted Judge Mutungi.

Ball in their court

On Thursday, April 10, 2025, Special Seats MP Salome Makamba criticised Chadema leaders for their statements about barring the election, labelling them signs of failure akin to those who have given up.

Ms Makamba was debating the Prime Minister’s Budget speech for the 2025/26 financial year.

The Prime Minister’s speech, presented by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, will be debated by Parliament until April 15, 2025, when MPs will vote to approve or reject the tabled revenue collections and expenditure estimates.

Ms Makamba is one of the 19 Chadema MPs embroiled in a crisis within their party after being accused of taking an oath without the party’s permission.

Chadema expelled these MPs, including Halima Mdee, who have since filed a lawsuit to challenge their expulsion, with the opposition party claiming they were no longer recognised as party lawmakers.

Chadema is implementing a resolution passed by its General Assembly on January 21, 2025, under the “No Reforms, No Election” slogan, with national leaders, including Tundu Lissu, holding meetings in the Nyasa and Southern regions, including Lindi, Mtwara, and Ruvuma.

However, a group dubbed G55, composed of candidates from the 2020 elections and leadership aspirants for the forthcoming elections, has emerged.

Some members agree with “No Reforms” but oppose preventing the election, arguing that under current circumstances, it is not feasible.

While Chadema maintains the “No Reforms, No Election” stance, G55 has opposed this, which Chadema leaders have interpreted as betrayal.

As a result, some regional chairpersons have started requesting explanations from those who signed the G55 petition.

G55 argues that having alternative views should not be seen as disloyalty, but rather a healthy debate within the party.

Ms Makamba, supported by MPs from the ruling CCM party, stated that no one could stop the election.

She aligned herself with the 55 Chadema members who said the election must proceed.

Being a lawyer by profession, Ms Makamba stated that attempting to prevent the election is treason and such actions are unacceptable.

She called on the Minister of Home Affairs, Innocent Bashungwa, and his forces to stand firm and perform their duties.

“They have realised they cannot win, which is why they are trying to stop the election. We cannot encourage rebellion over election matters,” said the MP, pledging participation and returning to the August House after winning the election.

However, Ms Makamba did not provide more details about the party she would contest or the constituency.

She added that the goal of any opposition party worldwide is to ascend to power, noting that if people want to avoid the election, it shows they do not want power, and that is not the aim of their political party.

Furthermore, Ms Makamba, who ran for parliament in Shinyanga Urban in 2020 under Chadema, stated that she had nowhere to run and obtained her passport while in parliament.

She emphasised that she would not want to see her family and relatives facing difficulties because of political decisions.

On the topic of elections, she stated that since the introduction of multi-party politics, the ruling CCM has consistently held power, but opposition parties have also won elections and been declared victorious, hence their presence in parliament.

According to Ms Makamba, 2024 saw significant changes, including the establishment of an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which she believes will ensure fairness in the elections, and she insisted they must proceed.

“We have seen your budget, Prime Minister, and you have increased funds for the election. I am waiting for the ballot boxes, for the election to happen and votes to be counted, not to boycott,” assured Ms Makamba.

In another development, the MP praised President Samia Suluhu Hassan, stating that she deserves another term for the good work she has done in bringing development to Tanzanians.

After her contribution, some of her fellow MPs, including the 19 from Chadema, stood up to congratulate her, with some even giving her money as a gift.

Chaos in Asante Mampong as angry NDC supporters vandalise property, set items ablaze

0

Some irate youth of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Asante Mampong municipality of the Ashanti region have for two days staged protests on the nomination of a Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

On Wednesday and Thursday, they stormed the party office to vandalise property and openly set ablaze some items, including office furniture.

Police and fire officers had to intervene to restore law and order, though no arrests were made.

Three individuals were shortlisted for the MCE position, but the supporters insist one of them should be nominated. They include Constituency Chairman, Mohammed Kamil; the 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for Mampong, Yakubu Yakubu, and a leading party member, Imoro Iddrisu.

But the agitated supporters claim a 4th individual, Esther Dwomoh, has been named for the position, a move they are poised to resist.

Mampong NDC Communications Officer, Kwaku Bernasko, explained that the agitated youth stormed the party office to express their displeasure to the national party executives.

“We are ready to support any of the three persons vetted and shortlisted for the MCE position. While we await the President to nominate any of them, any other individual to be named will be resisted. The NDC party will be in disarray if our leaders impose any MCE on us”.

One day you may be out of power, and you’ll be calling for due process— Afenyo-Markin

0

According to a report from GhanaWeb, parliamentary Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has confirmed that the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has decided to adhere to established legal and parliamentary procedures in response to the drug trafficking allegations involving Assin South MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour.

Speaking during an interview on Joy FM on April 10, 2025, Afenyo-Markin revealed that following discussions with the NIB, an understanding was reached to manage the situation in accordance with proper legal and institutional channels.

He stated that official communication had been sent to the Speaker of Parliament and emphasized the importance of following the appropriate process.

Afenyo-Markin urged for patience, noting that those in power should be mindful of upholding justice and procedure, as political roles are not permanent.

“Let us allow due process. One day, you may be out of power, and you’ll be calling for due process. That is my message to my colleagues,” he said.

He also noted that Minority leadership had initially raised concerns about how the situation was being handled, particularly with regard to bypassing parliamentary norms when attempting to detain the MP.

Clarifying public speculation, Afenyo-Markin stressed that there was no attempt to obstruct law enforcement but rather a demand that constitutional and procedural guidelines be respected.

He said the NIB accepted these concerns and agreed to proceed accordingly.

IET-GH refutes claims linking engineers to building permit issuance

0

The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH), has rejected recent comments made by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, which suggested that engineers in the region were responsible for the wrongful issuance of a building permit for a project situated on a Ramsar site.

The minister reportedly called for the transfer of 99.9% of engineers from the region over the issue.

In response, IET-GH issued a press statement on April 10, 2025, clarifying the role of engineering practitioners within Ghana’s local governance and development permit systems.

According to IET-GH, the responsibility for issuing building or development permits does not lie with engineers.

Citing the Land Use and Spatial Planning Act, 2016 (Act 925), the institution explained that the authority to issue such permits is solely vested in the Spatial Planning Committee (SPC) of the respective Metropolitan, Municipal, or District Assemblies (MMDAs).

The SPC, a multi-disciplinary committee chaired by the Chief Executive of the Assembly, includes professionals from various departments such as physical planning, works, roads, disaster prevention, environmental protection, and traditional authorities, among others.

“The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH), has noted with concern a recent statement by the Greater Accra Regional Minister suggesting the transfer of 99.9% of engineers from the region over the issuance of a building permit for a project on a Ramsar site.

“This assertion is not only unfortunate but also a misrepresentation of the roles and responsibilities of engineering practitioners within the local government structure.

“We wish to categorically clarify that engineering practitioners are not responsible for the issuance of building or development permits,” the statement emphasized.

The institution also called for a thorough investigation into any claims that individual engineers may have bypassed proper procedures to issue permits.

It stressed that any such actions, if confirmed, would constitute professional misconduct and should be dealt with through the appropriate regulatory channels.

IET-GH has appealed to the Office of the Chief of Staff to consider organizing orientation programmes for Regional Ministers.

These programmes, the institution suggested, would help improve knowledge of local governance systems, applicable laws, and the roles of professionals involved in the built environment.

Ghana’s government orders review of all small-scale licences

0

The newly formed body, named the Small-Scale Mining Licence Review Committee, will assess the legality, environmental compliance, and financial obligations associated with existing licences.

The committee, chaired by the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Sulemana Yusif, has been mandated to examine several critical aspects of the licensing regime. These include:

Whether licences were acquired through due process

Compliance with environmental protection standards

Respect for water bodies, forest reserves and lands

Full payment of fees related to licensing and permits

Mr Armah-Kofi Buah underscored the significance of the committee’s work in restoring order to the small-scale mining sector and ensuring its sustainability.

“Your assignment is a vital step in cleansing the licensing system. By exposing irregularities, we can rebuild trust and maximise the sector’s contribution to national development,” the Minister remarked.

He further indicated that although the committee has been given a two-month lead time, the Ministry is open to extending the period should the need arise.

In his acceptance speech, Committee Chair Sulemana Yusif assured the public and stakeholders of a diligent and unbiased process.

“We understand the responsibility that comes with this role. Our work will be thorough and transparent to encourage trust and investor confidence,” he affirmed.

He also appealed to all licence holders to fully cooperate with the committee’s review process.

The committee brings together experts from a diverse group of institutions, ensuring a well-rounded approach to the audit. These include:

Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Water Resources Commission

Office of the Attorney General

Association of Small-Scale Miners

A final report is expected by June 2025, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to regulate small-scale mining, curb environmental degradation, and tackle illegal mining activities.

ECG had zero investment during Akufo-Addo’s first term – Dubik Mahama

0

Former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has revealed that the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo failed to invest in ECG during his first term in office.

Mahama attributed the lack of investment to the government’s focus on privatizing the power distribution company at the time.

“If you cast your mind back, during the President’s first tenure, all efforts were geared towards sending ECG into privatisation. So, there was zero investment in the company,” he said on Joy FM on Thursday, April 10.

Mr. Mahama referenced the controversial Power Distribution Services (PDS) deal, under which the management of ECG was handed over to PDS for about eight months. The agreement was later terminated, prompting ECG’s return to state control just ahead of the 2020 general elections.

“When I assumed office in 2022 as Managing Director, one of the first things I did was to conduct a health check on the company…What I found was that although there had been massive growth in the number of ECG customers, this was not properly reflected in the company’s data,” he noted.

“The billing system had its own deficiencies. When it hit the 4.5 million customer mark, new customers being added were not being captured in the billing system. They were hanging,” he said.

Gabon’s coup leader eyes election victory

0

After deposing Gabonese President Ali Bongo two years ago, Gen Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema was carried through the streets by his triumphant troops, who chanted “Oligui, président! Oligui, président!”.

The general certainly appeared to be a man of the people as he was held aloft by his soldiers, but to many, he was an unexpected leader.

Just five years ago, he barely existed in Gabon’s public consciousness. He had spent 10 years outside the country after being dismissed from the inner circle of the Bongo family, who until August 2023 had ruled Gabon for almost 56 years.

On Gen Oligui Nguema’s return, he quietly rose to the army’s highest position. Now, after 19 months as interim head of state for the nation of over two million, he is the overwhelming favourite to win April’s presidential election.

The 50-year-old has won praise for nationalising some foreign-owned oil assets, broadening the range of voices in political institutions by letting in opponents and civil society figures, boosting infrastructure and paying workers’ outstanding pension arrears.

Of the five West and Central African nations that have endured coups since 2020, Oligui Nguema’s Gabon is the only one to return to imminent civilian rule or maintain close relations with their former colonial power of France.

But Gabon remains heavily strained by debt, frequent power cuts, and complaints that the military men who staged the coup look set to remain in power despite promising to hand over to civilians.

Yet the strongman remains broadly popular among a population relieved to be rid of dynastic rule, writes analyst Paul Melly, assisted by electoral regulations that have disqualified some key challengers.

Equipped with a raft of presidential promises and a catchy campaign slogan “C’BON” – a play on his initials and the French word “c’est bon”, meaning “it’s good” – he approaches these polls in ebullient form.

On occasion “(I’ve Got) The Power” blasts out on stage as he dances to the delight of supporters – quite the song choice for a man who seized power by force and now seeks legitimacy through the ballot.

Early ambition

Brice Oligui Nguema was born in the south-eastern province of Haut-Ogooué. The area is a stronghold of the Bongo family and some even say that Oligui Nguema is Ali Bongo’s cousin.

Oligui Nguema took after his father and pursued a career in the military. At a very young age, he joined Gabon’s powerful Republican Guard unit, having trained at Morocco’s prestigious Meknes Royal Military Academy in 1997.

The ambitious young officer quickly attracted the attention of the military top brass and became an assistant to then-president Omar Bongo, Ali Bongo’s father.

It is said Oligui Nguema was extremely close to Bongo senior – he served the autocrat until Omar Bongo’s death in 2009.

“He’s someone who wasn’t expected [to lead Gabon] at this time,” Edwige Sorgho-Depagne, an analyst of African politics who works for Amber Advisers, told the BBC’s Newsday programme.

“In the 2000s, he was far from the country for some time… he was almost forgotten.”

When Ali Bongo took over from his father in 2009, Oligui Nguema was dismissed from his job. But he was appointed as a military attaché and spent about 10 years in Morocco and Senegal.

Local media portrays the general’s long absence as an “exile”, but a profile read out at his inauguration in September 2023 said that “his love for his country led him to take up a diplomatic career”.

Regardless, the industrious military man reappeared on Gabon’s political scene in 2018, when he replaced the president’s step-brother as the Republican Guard’s intelligence chief.

After just six months in the job, Oligui Nguema was promoted to head of the Republican Guard. He initiated reforms to make the unit more effective in its fundamental mission: maintaining the regime.

A former close collaborator told French news agency AFP that the general was at the time “a man of consensus, who never raises his voice, who listens to everyone and systematically seeks compromise”.

The profile read out at the general’s 2023 inauguration also gave hints of his character: He loves football and volleyball, speaks French and English, and is married with children.

Oligui Nguema also wants to be known as honest – in 2019 he launched the “clean hands” operation, which set out to tackle alleged state-led embezzlement.

However, the general was himself accused of hoarding public money.

In a 2020 investigation, US anti-corruption organisation OCCRP alleged that Oligui Nguema and the Bongo family had purchased expensive property in the United States with stashes of cash. The general was said to have spent $1m (£790,000) on three properties.

“I think whether in France or in the United States, a private life is a private life that [should be] respected,” Oligui Nguema said in response.

Barely eight months before seizing power, Gabon’s national news agency reported that Oligui Nguema had publicly reaffirmed his loyalty to Ali Bongo’s presidency, which had stretched for 14 years.

But on 30 August 2023, just hours after Ali Bongo was announced as the winner of a disputed presidential election, the military announced it was annulling the results and taking over.

With the president under house arrest, General Brice Clothaire Oligui Nguema was sworn in as Gabon’s interim president.

The general told France’s Le Monde newspaper that the Gabonese people had had enough of Ali Bongo’s rule, and that the president should not have run for a third term.

“Everyone talks about this but no-one takes responsibility,” he said. “So the army decided to turn the page.”

The UN, the African Union and France condemned the coup – the eighth to take place in West and Central Africa since 2020.

But Oligui Nguema seems to have won over large parts of the public. He has also succeeded in uniting the army, which has been divided along ethnic lines.

If elected, he has pledged to diversify the economy, make government more efficient, toughen housing regulation and incentivise the return of Gabonese people living in the diaspora. Many of these promises would build on progress already made by his administration, which has been keen to show it is cracking down on bureaucratic excess.

As a man who has been accused of corruption and has spent most his career in the Bongos’ inner circle, he is still striving to deliver the fresh start the Gabonese people desire.

No matter how that project ends, he will forever be etched in the country’s history books as the man who “turned the page”.

African print dresses, also known as Ankara dresses, have become a global fashion sensation, transcending cultural boundaries and making their mark on runways, streets, and wardrobes worldwide. These dresses, made from vibrant and intricately patterned fabrics, not only represent a rich heritage but also showcase the creativity and innovation of African designers. As we move into 2025, African print dresses continue to shine, combining traditional styles with modern influences to create truly unique fashion statements.

One of the main draws of African print dresses is the bold use of color and intricate patterns. The vibrant hues and geometric motifs are a direct reflection of Africa’s diverse cultures and rich history. Each pattern tells a story, often inspired by nature, spiritual beliefs, or ancestral heritage. Whether it’s the striking geometric shapes or the symbolic floral designs, every African print dress carries its own narrative, adding depth and meaning to the wearer’s style.

In 2025, designers are experimenting with different silhouettes and cuts to bring fresh perspectives to the classic African print dress. From the timeless A-line dresses and maxi gowns to more contemporary off-shoulder, wrap-around, and peplum styles, the diversity of designs makes African print dresses suitable for any occasion. These dresses are perfect for everything from casual outings to formal events, offering a balance of elegance, comfort, and bold fashion.

The versatility of African print dresses is another reason for their ongoing popularity. They can easily be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. A simple Ankara dress paired with sandals or sneakers creates a chic, casual look, while a more structured dress with heels and statement accessories can transform into a stunning evening outfit. Accessories such as headwraps, statement earrings, and beaded necklaces further enhance the beauty and cultural significance of these dresses.

Sustainability is also a key factor in the rise of African print dresses. Many African designers prioritize ethical fashion, using locally sourced fabrics and supporting artisans and craftspeople. This not only preserves traditional methods of textile production but also ensures that the fashion industry remains connected to the communities that create these vibrant prints.

In conclusion, African print dresses in 2025 represent a perfect blend of heritage, style, and sustainability. Whether you’re drawn to the vibrant colors, the rich history behind the prints, or the contemporary designs, these dresses continue to be a symbol of cultural pride and fashion innovation. With their endless variety of styles and bold expressions, African print dresses are a wardrobe staple for anyone looking to make a statement and celebrate African culture through fashion.

Trump recognises tariff ‘transition difficulty’ as US stock market falls again

0

The trade war between Washington and Beijing deepens, as the White House says its tariff rate on most Chinese goods is 145%.

Donald Trump had announced a 125% levy on imports from China on April 10, 2025 – but now the White House confirms that is on top of an existing 20% fee.

Trump acknowledged some tariff “transition difficulty” at a cabinet meeting.

Beijing earlier announced an 84% tariff on US goods entering the country.

The US stock market suffered another day of losses.

Elsewhere, the EU put retaliatory tariffs against the US on hold, after Trump paused a 20% tariff against Europe for 90 days.

The EU now faces the same 10% baseline tariff as most other countries, which Trump announced last week.

US stock market closes after another day of losses

Here’s what Wall Street’s three major stock indexes looked like at 16:00 EST (21:00 BST):

-Dow Jones Industrial Average – down 2.5%
-Nasdaq Composite – down 4.31%
-S&P 500 – down 3.46%

April 9, saw stock markets rally after Trump announced a pause to heavy tariffs on most countries, ending a run of days of heavy losses.

But on Thursday, there was a slump as soon as markets opened, reflecting ongoing uncertainty among investors about the economy.

April’s 10 losses don’t wipe out April 9’s gains, but all three main indexes are well below where they were before Trump imposed the tariffs.

The mood on Wall Street has darkened overnight
Gone is the euphoria from yesterday’s trading session, which saw the major US indexes notch their biggest one-day gains in years.

They resumed their run in the red Thursday, at one point halving yesterday’s gains.

The sell-off deepened after the White House clarified that tariffs on imports from China totalled not 125%, but 145%, after stacking the new number on top of an earlier tariff rate.

Investors worry that the tariffs on China and other countries will ultimately weaken growth.

The New York Stock Exchange closes soon – we’ll bring you the latest numbers shortly.

ECG was never at the table in terms of revenue – Dubik Mahama

0

Former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has stated that for many years, ECG’s revenue was not the best.

Speaking at the JoyNews National Dialogue on Thursday, April 10, Mr Mahama stressed that ECG had historically not been part of major revenue conversations.

“ECG was never at the table in terms of revenue. For years, ECG’s revenue was flat-lined — always between GH¢450 million to GH¢500 million. No utility company’s revenue should be that stagnant,” he said.

Read also: There was zero investment in ECG during Akufo-Addo’s first tenure – Dubik Mahama

However, he pointed to the significant progress made during his tenure, where ECG’s revenue reportedly increased to GH¢1.5 billion.

Mr Mahama further explained that ECG’s financial struggles were deeply rooted and not new to him when he assumed office in May 2022. However, sitting at the board level was a different experience compared to managing the company daily.

“There were a lot of discrepancies in the thinking around the company called ECG. Data from the Project Management Office revealed that over 700 electrical infrastructure projects were outstanding, about 100 more in civil works, and only 12 in customer service. This showed clearly that while the infrastructure side was being addressed, the business side — the side that brings in the money — was neglected.”

He noted that there was a fundamental flaw in how the company related to its customers, emphasising that no modern utility company can thrive without investing in customer interface systems.

“I had a discussion with the board and told them that no critical 21st-century utility operates without properly engaging customers. So, we embarked on an ambitious drive to change the narrative around customer relations,” Mr Mahama said.

Despite his familiarity with the company’s challenges from his time on the board, Mr Mahama admitted that sitting in the Managing Director’s chair exposed him to the harsh realities of ECG’s operational difficulties.

Unsecured penguin caused helicopter crash in South Africa

An “unsecured” penguin in a cardboard box was the cause of a helicopter crash in South Africa, a report into the incident has found.

The penguin, which had been placed in the box and on the lap of a passenger, slid off and knocked the pilot’s controls just after take-off from Bird Island off the Eastern Cape on 19 January.

The South African Civil Aviation Authority said the impact sent the helicopter crashing to the ground. No-one on board, including the penguin, was hurt.

The authority said that “the lack of secure containment for the penguin” was responsible for creating the “dangerous situation”.

According to the report, released this week, the flight had been conducting an aerial survey of the island in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape province.

After completing the survey, the helicopter landed, where a specialist then requested the transport of one penguin back to Port Elizabeth.

The report did not say why they had picked up the penguin.

The aviation authority said the pilot conducted a “risk assessment” but omitted to include the transport of the penguin on board which “was not in accordance with the Civil Aviation Regulations (CAR) 2011”.

When the helicopter was about 15m (50 feet) above ground, the cardboard box slid off the lap of the specialist to the right and caused the cyclic pitch control lever to move to the far-right position causing the aircraft roll, the report determined.

Unable to recover, the main rotor blades then struck the ground and the helicopter ultimately crashed on its starboard side approximately 20m from the point of lift-off.

While the helicopter sustained substantial damage, both the pilot and passengers were uninjured and the penguin was unharmed.

The report said all situations should be subject to “established safety protocols” and compliance with aviation safety procedures.

It also said that a proper evaluation of the situation and potential hazards (such as cargo shifting) should have been conducted.

“The absence of a proper, secured crate meant that the penguin’s containment was not suitable for the flight conditions,” it said.

ECG had zero investment during Akufo-Addo’s first term

Accra School of Hygiene launches centenary celebrations

0

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni

Accra, April 10, GNA – The Accra School of Hygiene has officially launched its centenary celebrations, marking 10 decades of excellence in training environmental and public health professionals in Ghana.

The event, held at the school’s premises, brought together government officials, health professionals, alumni, students, and stakeholders to commemorate the institution’s legacy and chart a path for its future.

On the theme, “A Century of Hygiene: Reviewing the Past, Refining the Future”, the ceremony highlighted the school’s pivotal role in Ghana’s public health sector since its establishment in 1925 as the nation’s oldest public health training institution.

Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh Minister of Health, in a speech read on his behalf, praised the school for its unwavering commitment to producing skilled environmental health officers, occupational health specialists, and sanitation professionals.

“For a century, this institution has been at the forefront of safeguarding public health, enforcing sanitation laws, and mitigating environmental health risks.”

“The recent introduction of the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health and Sanitation further demonstrates its dedication to innovation and excellence,” he said.

The Minister also acknowledged the school’s alignment with national and global health goals, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on clean water, sanitation, and good health.

Mr Smile Kobina Ametsi Principal of the Accra School of Hygiene, in his welcome address, outlined the institution’s growth over the years, from offering certificate programmes to now providing degree and diploma courses.

“We have expanded our training portfolio to include a BSc in Environmental Health and Sanitation, as well as new diploma programmes in Occupational Therapy and Occupational Health and Safety,” he said.

He further revealed plans to introduce additional undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including a Bachelor of Science(BSc) in Health Promotion and a Master’s in Environmental Health, pending accreditation.

Despite its achievements, the Principal highlighted pressing challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited lecture halls, and bureaucratic hurdles in staff transfers from local government to the Ministry of Health.

“We appeal to the government, alumni, and development partners to support our vision of becoming a centre of excellence in public health training,” he said.

The centenary will be marked by a series of activities throughout the year, including health outreach programmes, academic symposiums, and alumni engagements.

The school also aims to secure a new site for a state-of-the-art training facility to meet 21st-century health demands.

As part of the launch, the school matriculated its second batch of BSc Environmental Health students, reinforcing its commitment to producing the next generation of public health leaders.

Mahama govt appears clueless in galamsey fight – A Rocha Ghana

0

Deputy Director of A Rocha Ghana, Daryl Bosu, has criticised the Mahama-led administration for its perceived failure to tackle illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Thursday, April 10, Daryl Bosu pointed to the transitional period after former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s concession of defeat to John Dramani Mahama as a critical window during which illegal miners took advantage of weakened leadership.

According to Bosu, political elites and law enforcement appeared disengaged during the transition, which created an opportunity for illegal miners to invade and exploit vulnerable areas.

He noted that the situation has since deteriorated, with no meaningful progress made in combating the illegal mining menace.

Bosu also expressed disappointment with the current government, accusing it of failing to live up to its past advocacy on forest protection and strong criticism of the previous administration.

He questioned whether the current administration had any clear roadmap before taking office, suggesting that their strategies so far lack clarity and effectiveness.

“Everybody was on the previous administration that the government must do better than they were doing already. But all of a sudden it appears they are clueless.

“They don’t know what to do and if you listen to some of their strategy they are putting forward then you ask yourself, did they really have a strategy before they assumed office and I am sad to say that if you go to the ground they tell you that it has gotten worse and they don’t see any reprieve in the short term,” Bosu said.

Attorney General Dr Ayine, barely two months ago, offered immunity to some Ghanaians standing trial in various courts, including the Supreme Court. That immunity was extended to the Member of Parliament for Assin North, who had been on trial for three years.

Celebrated Ghanaian legal practitioner Tsatsu Tsikata, who was the senior lawyer for the recently exonerated Member of Parliament for Assin North Gyakye Quayson, says he declined the magnanimous offer by the Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine to discontinue the case of his client because he resolved to get an acquittal for the MP to prevent future uncertainties.

Kumasi Mayor to commence decongestion of the city on April 16

0

The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Richard Ofori Boadi, has signaled all persons occupying pavements and unauthorised spaces in the Central Business District of the city to vacate ahead of a major decongestion exercise on April 16.

The newly-confirmed city mayor says his administration intends to use sustainable means to ensure a lasting solution to the problem.

“If you are selling on the pavement, adjust yourself, if you are in the middle of any dual carriage road, especially in the Central Business District, then you have to take steps to get out of the place because from Wednesday we will be coming”, Mr Boadi said.

He emphasised, “I have a different strategy of decongestion. I don’t believe in bringing military men there. Everybody wants to sell in Adum, it is the reason they are there. We will find some ingenious ways to keep them in Adum and decongest it.”

The completion of major stalled market projects remains a priority to the Kumasi Mayor. He says strategic measures will be adopted to complete them by the end of his tenure.

Mr Boadi added, “Krofrom, I am sure within the next two years, it must be completed. For Kejetia Market, the contractors are on site. I will get a briefing from the Regional Minister on the status of it, and I am sure that by the end of President Mahama’s tenure, it will be completed.”

Fifty-five of 56 assembly members endorsed the President’s nominee for the position of Kumasi metro chief executive.

The election scheduled for Friday was pushed a day earlier at the request of the Assembly members in the metropolis. The venue was also changed to prevent party members from gathering at the location.

Kenya police fire tear gas during school drama competition

0

The play, pictured during a previous performance, mirrors some of Kenya's pressing problems The play, pictured during a previous performance, mirrors some of Kenya’s pressing problems

Kenya’s national high-school drama competition has been overshadowed by drama of its own after police fired tear gas to disperse a crowd that had gathered to watch a controversial play.

Echoes of War is set in a fictional kingdom where the youth have lost faith in their leaders.

It features battles with the police and has drawn parallels with last year’s protests by young people against tax rises.

It was initially disqualified from the drama festival under unclear circumstances, but a High Court ruling overturned the decision and ordered it to be included.

Tensions flared in the western town of Nakuru on Thursday morning when the student performers stormed out of the venue, demanding the release of the play’s author, Cleophas Malala, who had been detained by police.

The scriptwriter and former senator who had penned the production for students from Butere Girls High School, was blocked by police from meeting the young performers for final rehearsals on Wednesday evening.

Malala was later released without charge and praised the students for boycotting the play.

“The young girls of Butere Girls’ have exercised an act of heroic restoration. I’m determined to ensure that Echoes of War is displayed before a Kenyan audience,” Malala said immediately after his release.

The students briefly sang the national anthem before dramatically leaving the hall, which was sealed off by anti-riot police, armed with batons and tear gas canisters.

“There’s no audience. Who are we performing for?” one of the girls told journalists.

They also complained about police harassment.

Following news of Malala’s arrest, large crowds had gathered outside the venue curious to watch the play.

But anti-riot police had been deployed overnight in case of trouble and they fired tear gas to disperse the would-be audience.

Education Minister Julius Ogamba questioned the involvement of Malala in the competition, saying the politician was neither a teacher nor a play director.

“I wonder why a politician should be a script writer for a student performance. Even the competition loses value if we do not allow the teachers to be scriptwriters,” Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said, warning politicians against using innocent students to settle their political scores.

“Let us have a thick line between politics and education,” he added.

The row has sparked public uproar, with rights group Amnesty International saying it was “pointing to a worrying pattern of state-sponsored repression of free expression, press freedom, and the right to associate”.

Chief Justice Martha Koome said that Malala’s detention contravened the court order that the play, and its author, be allowed to take part in the competition.

“Defiance of court orders not only undermines the authority of the courts but also poses a serious threat to the rule of law, which is the bedrock of our society,” she added.

Prominent opposition figure Kalonzo Musyoka condemned the police for firing tear gas near students, praising the “brave” girls for declining to perform.

In a statement, the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) demanded that the students be allowed to stage their play like all the other competitors.

The fictitious kingdom in Echoes of War play is ruled by a tyrannical sultan who is irked by the activism of the youth, portraying similarities to what is currently happening in Kenya, where young people have been demanding better governance.

It is not clear whether the play will now be disqualified and so not get through to the finals, which are held at State House with the president in attendance.

The annual high school drama competitions are hugely popular in Kenya, with students often using theatre as a tool to challenge those in power.

This is not the first time one of the plays has angered the authorities.

In 2013, Malala made headlines with his controversial play Shackles of Doom, which thrust him into the national limelight – and eventually into politics.

The play, also performed by Butere Girls’ High School, was banned by the government before the High Court ruled against the ban and allowed the play to be staged.

At the time, Malala said Shackles of Doom depicted Kenya’s highly ethnised politics which he said contributed to the unequal distribution of resources in the country.

The senator, who has written dozens of other plays, was last August kicked out of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) following internal party wrangles.

He has since fallen out with President William Ruto, whom he campaigned for during the 2022 general elections.

Irate NDC supporters storm Mampong office, burn items

0

Some aggrieved supporters of the National Democratic Congress in the Asante Mampong Constituency of the Ashanti Region stormed the party’s office on Thursday, April 10, vandalizing property and setting some items ablaze outside the premises.

The youth claimed they had received information that one Esther Dwomoh had been nominated for the Municipal Chief Executive position, although there has been no official communication from the Presidency.

According to them, three individuals, the 2024 Parliamentary Candidate Yakubu Yakubu, the current Constituency Chairman Mohammed Kamil, and Imoro Iddrisu, were shortlisted after the vetting, and they insist one of them must be nominated.

Police officers were deployed to the scene, but no arrests have been made.

Fire officers were also dispatched to douse the flames set to one of the properties.

The Asante Mampong Constituency Communications Officer for the NDC, Kwaku Bernasko, confirmed the incident.

“It’s a group of the youth who are agitating about a rumour that is moving around that the Mampong MCE nominee had been given to a lady called Esther Dwomoh. They came to the party office to express their displeasure to the party executives who were around.

“We couldn’t control the crowd; party properties like chairs and tables were broken and set ablaze at the forecourt of the party office,” he narrated.

He stated that the United States Army is fully committed to enabling the operational capacity of its partners in fighting the challenges of disinformation.

“The complex challenges of disinformation require multinational and regional cooperation and synchronization. They require the involvement of everyone here,” he emphasised.

The U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) co-hosted the summit, which has been previously held in the United States (2010 & 2022), Uganda (2012), Senegal (2015), Tanzania (2016), Malawi (2017), Nigeria (2018), Botswana (2019), Ethiopia (2020), Cote d’Ivoire (2023), and Zambia (2024).

The theme for this year’s summit was “Optimizing Land Forces for the Emerging Security Environment.”

The African Land Forces Summit (ALFS) is an annual event that brings together land forces commanders from across Africa, other partner nations, academics, and government leaders.

‘They are everywhere in your faces’ – Davido on why Nigerian artistes outshine Ghanaian acts

0

Afrobeats musician, Davido Afrobeats musician, Davido

Afrobeats musician, Davido, has attributed the global dominance of Nigerian musicians over their equally talented Ghanaian counterparts to the relentless drive of Nigerians.

Speaking in an interview on ‘The Breakfast Club’ on April 8, 2025, Davido responded to the host’s question about why Ghana lacks artistes with the same international reach as Nigeria or South Africa.

While acknowledging Ghana’s wealth of talent, Charlamagne noted that its musicians have not achieved the same level of global prominence.

Davido, in response, explained that Nigerians’ bold and assertive approach sets them apart.

“It’s just the kind of people we are. Nigerians are very ‘in your face.’ If you go to any neighbourhood, you’ll find a Nigerian there. That’s how we are, we’re everywhere, pushing our craft,” he said.

The ‘Unavailable’ hitmaker stated that this aggressive self-promotion and relentlessness give Nigerian artistes an edge in breaking into international markets as compared to Ghanaians.

His comments follow years of comparisons on social media between Ghanaian acts and their Nigerian counterparts.

While many have blamed Ghanaian artistes for not pushing hard enough, others have pointed to factors such as Nigeria’s larger population, greater investment in its entertainment industry, and the presence of more Nigerian personalities in influential positions.

However, many Ghanaian acts, including Stonebwoy, Black Sherif, and King Promise, have also been making incredible exploits around the globe.

Sekondi MP sues NPP member, Jospong, Metro TV over $350M cocaine claim

0

Blay Nyameke Armah, a Member of Parliament for Sekondi, has filed a defamation lawsuit in the High Court of Justice, Accra, against three defendants: Lawuratu Musah-Saka, the Jospong Group of Companies, and Ignite Media Group.

The case stems from alleged defamatory statements made on the widely aired television programme Good Morning Ghana and subsequently disseminated across various social media platforms.

According to the plaintiff’s claim in the writ dated April 9, the first defendant falsely accused him of being involved in transnational drug trafficking, including the possession of 3,000 kilograms of cocaine valued at $350 million.

The statements further suggested that Armah had fled to a neighbouring country to evade arrest and that his son had been apprehended in connection with the alleged criminal activities.

These accusations, as described in the writ, have caused significant harm to the plaintiff’s reputation as a lawyer, businessman, and parliamentary candidate, subjecting him to public ridicule and emotional distress.

The plaintiff contends that the allegations were made maliciously, without evidence, and aimed at portraying him as a criminal kingpin leading an organized criminal enterprise.

In his lawsuit, Armah seeks multiple legal remedies, including:
– A declaration that the statements made by the first defendant were false, malicious, and defamatory.
– A retraction and public apology issued by the defendants with the same prominence as the defamatory content.
– An order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from publishing further defamatory statements.
– General, aggravated, punitive, and compensatory damages totaling GH₵10,000,000.00.
– Legal costs and any other reliefs deemed appropriate by the court.

Mr Gunu gave the assurance on Wednesday, April 9 at the Akatsi South Municipal Assembly Hall during the confirmation of Mr Daniel Dagba, the President’s nominee for the position of Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

“I have already communicated with the appropriate authorities, including NADMO and the Member of Parliament for the area for a collaborative intervention.”

Ghana’s economic challenges stem from flawed macroeconomic framework – TUC says in comments on 2025 budget

0

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has published detailed comments on the 2025 Budget and Economic Policy presented to Parliament by the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson on March 11, 2025.

The 2025 budget has the theme “Resetting the Economy for the Ghana we want,”

In the 12-page document submitted to the government on the budget, the TUC commented on the Macroeconomic Policy Framework, Employment, Wages, Salaries, and Industrial Peace, Social Protection and Pensions, Public Debts and National Revenues, Agriculture and Food Security, Privatisation of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Labour Administration, Taxation and Free Senior High School policy.

The TUC noted in the documented dated April, 2025 that “The assessment is done in the context of our budget proposals submitted to Government before the budget presentation. More importantly, our assessment is against the backdrop of the nature of Ghana’s economic challenges. That is, an economic management framework that has for over four (4) decades failed to transform the structure of the Ghanaian economy.”

It added that this framework “has produced high rate of joblessness, rampant inflation, high interest rates, unsustainable national debts, declining incomes, and suffocating cost-of-living.”

“In our submission to Government on the 2025 budget, we indicated that Ghana’s recuring economic challenges stems from a flawed
macroeconomic framework that has been implemented since the mid-1980s. In that framework, employment is treated as a residual outcome of
economic growth and macroeconomic stability. This assumption has proven to be false given that in the last 40 years of positive economic growth, joblessness has increased and employment has shifted to the informal sector. Good jobs have become harder to obtain,” the TUC stated.

“While overprioritizing macro stability, the framework has resulted in recurring bouts of macroeconomic instability. This is reflected in the
persistence of the inflation problem in Ghana, high interest rates, subdued economic growth, and depreciating national currency,” it emphasised.

To turn things around, the TUC urged government to work with all stakeholders to change the current macroeconomic framework.

“Ghana needs a new model of economic management that seeks to qualitatively change the structure of the economy. Employment creation must be at the centre of economic policy. Ghana needs to derive maximum benefits from its natural resources. This will enable Government to fund national development from domestic revenues, obviate the need for borrowing and reduce our debt burden,” the Union advised.

Tanzania’s opposition leader charged with treason

Tundu Lissu appeared a magistrate's court in Dar es Salaam, to hear the charges Tundu Lissu appeared a magistrate’s court in Dar es Salaam, to hear the charges

Tanzania’s opposition leader Tundu Lissu has been charged with treason a day after he was arrested following a rally he held in the south of the country.

The charge is connected to his nationwide campaign pushing for electoral reform under the slogan “No Reforms, No Election”.

The country is due to go to the polls in October when Lissu is expected to challenge President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

When Samia first came to power in 2021, after the death of her predecessor John Magufuli, she was praised for reversing some of his more authoritarian tendencies. But she has since been criticised after some opposition members have been targeted with arrests and abductions.

In a series of public appearances, Lissu has been saying that there is no chance of a free-and-fair election in six months unless there are reforms.

The leader of the Chadema party wants the make-up of the electoral commission to change. He has argued that it should not include people appointed directly by Samia.

The authorities have described the campaign as inciting the public against the holding of the general election.

Lissu has been arrested several times in the past.

In 2017, during Magufuli’s presidency, he survived an assassination attempt during which he was shot 16 times.

He then went into exile and returned briefly in 2020 to run against Magufuli in that year’s election. He left after the results were announced, complaining about irregularities.

He then returned in 2023 after changes that Samia introduced to allow more freedom for the opposition.

Earlier on Thursday, the police used tear gas to disperse Chadema supporters while blocking the party leaders from holding a press conference regarding Lissu’s arrest.

Some party supporters told the BBC that nothing would stop them from demanding electoral reforms ahead of the elections.

“We are surprised that the police are harassing us when our rallies are peaceful,” one supporter said.

“We know the ruling party, CCM, is behind all this. We will fight for changes before elections.”

Rights groups have condemned the use of force and accused the government of using state institutions to silence critics.

A lawyers’ association said the arrest of Lissu and the crackdown on his supporters was an abuse of power and showed a lack of political tolerance.

Lissu’s treason case has been adjourned until 24 April.

TDC alleges irregular sale of community 24 lands to Ofori-Atta family associates

0

The Tema Development Company Limited (TDC) has disclosed that its preliminary investigations have uncovered the sale of several parcels of land in Tema Community 24 to individuals associated with the Ofori-Atta family.

This revelation comes on the back of an internal review across TDC’s departments, which exposed significant irregularities and triggered calls for an external investigation.

Speaking at a press conference at the TDC office in Tema on Thursday, April 10, Managing Director Courage Makafui Nunekpeku stated that available records point to land sales made during the tenure of his predecessor, Alice Abena Ofori-Atta, to persons connected to the Ofori-Atta family.

Nunekpeku emphasized that the call for investigations is grounded in solid evidence and not mere speculation.

“Nothing will stop the investigations we’re going to do. The only thing that can stop it will be probably the sector minister or the President. Apart from that, nothing is going to stop it. We will continue to do the land audit to make sure that people account for their stewardship.”

He further questioned the concentration of land ownership within a single family.

“You cannot be the Managing Director that presides over the sale of land, properties to this level and think that you should not be called to account. Every ten plots in layer T of the categorised land, two or three plots belongs to an Ofori-Atta. I mean, why, is that the only family we have in Ghana? These are facts, nobody can change it.”

The Head of Public Relations for Burniton Music Group (BMG), Vida Adutwumwaa Boateng is calling on organisers of Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) to nominate reigning TGMA Artiste of the Year, Stonebwoy for best male vocalist award.

This year’s Best Male Vocalist category has Kofi Nuel, Emmanueel Juddah, MOG Music, Ayisi and Joe Mettle as nominees.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Ms Boateng said she was very surprised at how the board of TGMA continuously ignored Stonebwoy for the best male vocal performance award when the latter has shown his vocal prowess over the years.

“I would have loved for Stonebwoy to also make it to the male vocal performance category as well. For many years, the scheme has overlooked Stonebwoy’s vocal power, his vocal dexterity is unmatched and that show itself on every song on his album and features he makes for other artistes.

“He has one of the unique vocal tones and melodies that sets him apart from other artistes and it’s about time that that unique sound of his voice is appreciated. Songs like lovely weather, your body etc. have distinct vocal ranges that could settle nicely in that male vocal performance category.

Virtually ticking all the category’s boxes as well as habouring a strong conviction of making history as the first artiste to win the ultimate Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) Artiste of the Year (AOTY) award back to back, Dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has declared he has no challenger in this year’s race. (Related article: I have no challenger –Stonebwoy on Artiste of the Year race)

Stonebwoy, the reigning TGMA Artiste of the Year believes it is a done deal for him although he is vying for the TGMA topmost prize again this year against strong contenders including King Promise, Black Sherif, Kweku Smoke, Joe Mettle, King Paluta and Team Eternity Ghana.

Expert warns against high domestic financing of Ghana’s budget deficit amid T-Bill rejections

0

Concerns are mounting among financial experts regarding Ghana’s plans to finance a significant 63 percent of its 2025 budget deficit domestically.

This strategy, coupled with recent trends of rejected and undersubscribed Treasury Bills, has raised red flags about government’s ability to close the fiscal gap and its potential repercussions for the nation’s economy.

Finance and tax expert, Nelson Cudjoe Kuagbedzi has issued a stark warning, highlighting that the continuous rejection of bids and the failure to fully subscribe to Treasury Bill auctions pose a serious threat to the government’s deficit financing objectives. His caution comes on the heels of the recent auctions.

(Table showing T-bills auction trends from March 7-April 4, 2025)

According to Kuagbedzi, this trend has “significant implications for Ghana’s economy.” If government struggles to secure the necessary domestic financing, the nation could face a cascade of negative consequences. These include “increased borrowing costs, economic instability, inflation, currency depreciation, and even a sovereign debt crisis”, he noted.

Ghana’s challenges with deficit financing are not a new phenomenon. Historical data reveals a persistent struggle with revenue mobilization. Research indicates that the country’s budget deficits are often fueled by low tax collection. Currently, Ghana’s tax revenue as a percentage of GDP hovering around 13.9 percent. This issue exacerbates the current concerns surrounding the reliance on domestic borrowing.

Nelson Cudjoe Kuagbedzi acknowledges that deficit financing can be a double-edged sword. While it can inject much-needed funds into the economy and potentially stimulate growth, it also carries inherent risks if not managed prudently. “Uncontrolled deficit financing can lead to inflationary pressures, widen income inequality, and create overall economic instability.”

The current situation, marked by a high reliance on domestic financing and government’s apparent reluctance to accept high borrowing costs in the Treasury bill market, presents a complex challenge. It remains to be seen how government will navigate these headwinds to ensure a stable economic future for Ghana. Government needs diversified strategies to address these concerns and secure the necessary funds to meet its budgetary obligations without triggering adverse economic consequences. The interplay between government’s fiscal plans, investor appetite, and borrowing costs will be crucial in determining Ghana’s economic trajectory in the coming year.
