The Black Star Experience aims to showcase Ghana's cultural dynamism The Black Star Experience aims to showcase Ghana’s cultural dynamism

On May 1, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama will officially launch the “Black Star Experience,” a transformative cultural tourism initiative aimed at positioning Ghana as Africa’s premier destination for heritage, arts, and diasporan engagement.

The event is scheduled for 6:00 PM at the iconic Freedom & Justice Monument in Accra, bringing together key stakeholders, policymakers, creatives, and media representatives.

Unveiled during President Mahama’s State of the Nation Address in February, the Black Star Experience is envisioned as a year-round celebration of Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.

It encompasses a series of events and festivals, including street carnivals, film weeks, fashion festivals, food fairs, theatrical performances, and concert party competitions.

These activities are designed to showcase Ghana’s cultural dynamism and attract international visitors, particularly from the global African diaspora.

A significant component of the initiative is the redevelopment of the historic Osu Castle and its environs into a vibrant tourism precinct. Plans include the establishment of arts and crafts markets, gold and jewelry hubs, and interactive historical exhibits, transforming the area into a pedestrian-friendly cultural hub.

The Black Star Experience also aims to promote Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism, leveraging Ghana’s stable democracy and strategic location near the center of the world to attract international events and conferences.

It also provides a platform for young creatives and cultural activists to contribute, fostering innovation and economic opportunities in the creative arts sector.

Kwabena Adu-Boahene has been fingered in another fraud scheme Kwabena Adu-Boahene has been fingered in another fraud scheme

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has disclosed that ongoing investigations have uncovered yet another fraudulent scheme.

It has been revealed that Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has been making monthly payments of at least GH¢1.3 million into the private accounts of Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former Director General of the National Signals Bureau.

Speaking at a press briefing on April 30, 2025, the Attorney General revealed that these payments were disguised as part of an internet provision contract with the National Signals Bureau (NSB), raising serious concerns about the misuse of public funds.

Dr Ayine further disclosed that the payments have been occurring for several months, with no clear evidence linking the transfers to any legitimate services provided by Kwabena Adu-Boahene or the NSB.

The Attorney General stated that his office is currently scrutinising the details of the contract, which appears to have been fabricated to conceal the illicit payments.

The embattled former NSB Director-General, with links to several high-profile figures, has been under investigation for various financial irregularities.

He currently faces 11 charges in connection with fraudulent schemes that have siphoned millions of cedis from state entities over the past years. These charges include conspiracy to commit fraud, money laundering, and misappropriation of public funds.

Adu-Boahene’s earlier arrest was in connection with previous schemes, following multiple allegations about his role in manipulating government contracts, diverting funds intended for public projects, and using his influence to secure favourable deals with state-owned companies.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General has vowed to pursue the case vigorously, promising to hold all involved parties accountable for their actions.

Kwesi Nyantakyi’s successes at CAF and FIFA paved way for Kurt Okraku

Kwesi Nyantakyi and Kurt Okraku Kwesi Nyantakyi and Kurt Okraku

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Chairman Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has stated that his successor, Kwesi Nyantakyi’s exploits in African and world football paved the way for Kurt Okraku.

He explained that Nyantakyi, who was the First Vice-President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and a member of the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) Council, during his reign as GFA President, made a good mark for the nation.

The Board Member of Accra Hearts of Oak asserted that these achievements of his successor contributed to the election of current GFA President Kurt Okraku as the Second Vice-President of CAF.

Dr Tamakloe stated that football officials from Ghana are benefiting from the high standards Nyantakyi set globally.

“My successor, Kwesi Nyantakyi, if he hadn’t encountered difficulties, would have been in very high positions, not only in Africa but globally. He left an indelible mark at CAF, and that has paved the way for Kurt.

“Kwesi performed excellently; he knew football. I worked with him and can testify to his knowledge. His achievements pushed Ghana forward, and Kurt is now benefiting from that legacy,” he said during an interview with Graphic Sports.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced that Kurt Okraku was elected as the Second Vice-President of the body during an Executive Council meeting held in Accra on April 26, 2025.

The appointment was necessary as Motsepe seeks to restructure leadership after four of CAF’s five previous vice-presidents resigned from their roles.

GWL paid GHS 1.5m monthly to Adu Boahen for internet services

0

Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has disclosed that Ghana Water Limited (GWL) paid a monthly amount of GHS1.3 million to the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahen—an arrangement that became a key issue in his recent arrest.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, April 30, Dr. Ayine cited a contract between GWL and the erstwhile Bureau of National Communications (now the National Signals Bureau), under which GWL was to pay GHS1.3 million monthly in exchange for secure internet services.

However, according to the Attorney General, instead of directing the funds to the official account of the Bureau, Adu Boahen provided GWL with the account details of his private company—BNC Communications Bureau Limited—diverting state funds for personal gain.

“Our diligent investigation team came across yet another scheme hatched by Mr. Adu Boahene, this time involving Ghana Water Limited. This criminal enterprise involved the purported provision of secured internet services by the erstwhile Bureau of National Communications now National Signals Bureau.

“Every month GWL paid GHc1.3 million to Kwabena Adu Boahene and his company in exchange for internet services provided by the government. In fact the figure rose to GHc1.5 million every month at the close of our investigations.”

“For purposes of his payment, Kwabena Adu Boahen provided the account details of his company, BNC Communications Bureau Limited, to Ghana Water, which religiously paid for the internet services,” Dr. Ayine revealed.

“In other words, every two weeks, when GHS650,000 of money from Ghana Water left the account of Ghana Water, instead of going to the National Signals Bureau account, it went to the account of a company owned by Kwabena Adu Boahen and his wife,” he further explained.

President Mahama launches National Apprenticeship Programme in Tamale

0

By Northern Region Team

Tamale, April 30, GNA-President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) in Tamale, the capital of the Northern Region with a call on the youth to take advantage to acquire hands-on skills to be employable.

The launch is in fulfilment of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto promise to open job opportunities for young people to have hands-on skills to be employable.

President Mahama noted that the inability of the youth to access higher level education should not be a deterrent factor to enable them to enroll on the NAP.

He said NAP reaffirms the commitment of NDC to fulfilling its manifesto promise of providing jobs for the youth, adding that it would equip about 500,000 youth, beginning with the initial cohort of 100,000

The NAP is a flagship initiative of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government aimed at tackling youth unemployment through technical and vocational skills development.

It forms a core part of the administration’s job creation and human capital development strategy.

The President announced that each apprentice would receive a stipend for transport under the programme, while five per cent of NAP beneficiaries would be Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and 45 per cent would be women.

The programme, as outlined in the NDC’s 2024 manifesto, offers free training in various trades and crafts, leading to formal certification.

Beneficiaries will be supported with start-up capital and equipment to establish their own businesses upon graduation.

A dedicated Business Growth Apprenticeship module will link TVET graduates with established industries for mentorship and enterprise development.

The government also plans to introduce reforms to the TVET system by incorporating digital skills, soft skills, and entrepreneurial training.

Mr George Opare Addo, Minister for Youth, Empowerment, and Development, emphasised on the seriousness government attached to such flagship programmes and said “We are not just launching a programme, but a movement that will forever empower young people to lead the development agenda of Ghana”

In support of the programme, the 2025 Budget Statement has allocated GH¢300 million, with a target to train and empower over 100,000 young people across the country.

The programme also includes the establishment of regional Centres of Excellence to provide hands-on training in simulated work environments.

The launch in Tamale drew stakeholders from the education, industry, and youth sectors, and marked the beginning of nationwide implementation of the initiative.

The Mahama-led administration has described the NAP as a critical pillar in its drive to create jobs and equip Ghana’s youth with employable skills for sustainable livelihoods.

On Monday, President Mahama launched one of the party’s flagship programmes, “Adwumawura” aimed at creating estimated 10,000 jobs annually for the youth and other people seeking jobs.

In addition to the skills training as launched gives credence to the President fulfilling some key party manifesto promises.

Adu-Boahen’s ‘dubious’ plot cost Ghana $7m – Attorney General

0

Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine has revealed that former Director General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahen, orchestrated a “dubious” scheme that led to a financial loss of $7 million to the state.

According to Dr. Ayine, the scheme involved the illegal diversion of state funds for personal and private use.

The disclosure was made during a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, April 30.

The Attorney General confirmed that the state had filed 11 criminal charges against Adu Boahen, his wife Angela Adjei-Boateng, and two other accomplices. The charges include stealing, defrauding by false pretenses, money laundering, conspiracy to commit crime, causing financial loss to the state, and using public office for profit.

Adu Boahen and his wife were arrested on March 20 and 21, respectively, in connection with the case. Dr. Ayine stated that investigations revealed they used some of the diverted funds to finance businesses they personally owned.

The prosecution maintains that the accused took advantage of their public office to channel state resources through private entities, defrauding the country in the process.

The case is expected to proceed in court in the coming weeks as the state pursues justice in the high-profile matter.

“Meticulous investigations undertaken by the Economic and  Organised Office had uncovered a scheme by Mr. Adu Boahene that resulted in the loss of $7 million.

“I can now confirm that at the conclusion of our investigation, that is how much he stole from the taxpayers of this country. In consequence, I have filed charges against him and his wife, and one Mildred Donkor, a former employee of UMB,” he  disclosed.

GHs1m illegally paid monthly to Adu Buahene for GWCL internet – AG

0

Attorney General, Dominic Ayine has revealed more shocking details of how Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) illegally paid GHS1.5 million monthly to a private company owned by former National Signals Bureau (NSB) Director-General Kwabena Adu Boahene for internet services.

At a press conference on Wednesday, the Attorney General detailed how the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) was systematically defrauded through an elaborate scheme involving the National Signals Bureau (NSB) via its former director.

The scheme, which ran for an undisclosed period, saw GWCL paying premium rates for basic internet services that should have been provided at no cost between the two state-owned entities.

“This criminal enterprise involved the purported provision of secure Internet services to Ghana Water Company Limited by the erstwhile Bureau of National Communications, now National Signals Bureau,” Ayine stated.

“The contract document showed that Ghana Water was to pay BNC the sum of 650,000 Ghana cedis every two weeks for secure internet services from BNC, that is the Bureau of National Communications. However, for purposes of the payment, Kwabena Adu Buahene provided the account details of his company, BNC Communication Limited, to Ghana Water, which religiously paid for the Internet services.”

The AG explained that “every two weeks, 650,000 Ghana cedis left the bank accounts of Ghana Water. Instead of going to the National Signals Bureau account, it went to the account of a company known as Bureau of National Communications, owned by Kwabena Adu Buahene and his wife.”

The Attorney General emphasized the absurdity of the arrangement as “the government agency is providing secure internet services to Ghana Water Limited, a limited liability company solely owned by the same government.”

“And Ghana Water is spending money that they do not have to pay for internet services at that cost – 1.3 million Ghana cedis every month. In fact, the figure goes to 1.5 million Ghana cedis every month at the close of our investigations.”

The press conference came hours after Adu Boahene and his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, pleaded not guilty in court to 11 corruption charges involving GHS49 million in alleged fraudulent contracts.

The Attorney General’s office is expanding its investigation into the GWCL payments, with more charges expected.

He added that his office will file separate charges against Mr Adu Buahene and his accomplices next week.

Alabaster Box has never charged churches for performances – Founding member reveals

0

Gospel music group, Alabaster Box Gospel music group, Alabaster Box

A founding member of the renowned Ghanaian gospel group Alabaster Box, Samuel Nii Narku Dowuona, has revealed that the group has never demanded payment for performing in churches.

In an interview with Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM, Dowuona shared that the group, formed in the early 2000s, initially rejected any form of payment for church performances.

“Payment or taking money for singing was not on our minds. Even when we formed Alabaster Box, we were just happy going around singing. There were times when churches tried to give us money, but we rejected it,” he said.

He recalled a turning point in 2003 when a church offered them money after a performance.

“The first time we were ever paid was somewhere around 2003. We had gone to perform at a friend’s father’s church. When he gave us money, we told him we didn’t do that. That’s not how we operate.

“The man invited us into his office and told us what we were doing wasn’t biblical. He said, ‘When you come and sing and you don’t charge, that’s fine, that’s your policy. But when we give you something, just take it. That’s how blessings work. Just take it and go,’” Dowuona explained.

Since then, the group has accepted voluntary offerings but still does not set performance fees for churches.

“Even today, as Alabaster Box, when we are invited to churches, we don’t charge. People usually ask, ‘How much do you charge?’ We say, ‘No, we don’t charge. But how can you support our ministry so it can continue?’” he added.

However, Dowuona clarified that for corporate or non-church events, Alabaster Box negotiates fees as part of a professional engagement.

“But if it’s not a church event, maybe a paid event or a corporate function, then we can talk business,” he said.

Adjah Tetteh reveals how Emmanuel Kuffour instilled a winning mentality at Hearts of Oak

0

Emmanuel Kuffour (L) and Adjah Tetteh (R) were teammates at Hearts of Oak Emmanuel Kuffour (L) and Adjah Tetteh (R) were teammates at Hearts of Oak

Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Lawrence Adjah Tetteh has shared insights into the strong winning culture that once defined the club and how senior players like Emmanuel Osei Kuffour played a pivotal role in shaping that mentality.

According to Tetteh, during an interview with Happy FM, the goal back then wasn’t just to compete locally, it was to conquer Africa. As such, joining Hearts meant stepping into a dressing room where expectations were sky-high, driven not by pressure from coaches but by the players themselves.

That spirit was cultivated by individuals who had experienced it and passed it down with pride.

“When I joined, it was players like Emmanuel Osei Kuffour who instilled that ambition. He once told me, ‘Even if you’re from another club, once you’re at Hearts, your target is Africa, every year.’ That stuck with me,” Tetteh said.

The drive to succeed, he explained, was infectious. Long before team meetings were organised by the technical bench, leaders like Sammy Adjei would rally the squad, reminding them of what was at stake, pride, the club’s legacy, and bonuses tied to continental qualification.

“That alone was enough motivation. It was a culture, a spirit, that drove us,” Tetteh added.

Now, watching from afar, Tetteh admits it pains him to see Hearts of Oak fall short of those high standards. For him, the value of competing in Africa extends beyond silverware; it encompasses visibility, experience, and legacy.

“My wish is to see the club back on that stage consistently. New players must understand that wearing the Hearts jersey is a responsibility. It’s a big platform, and when you get it, you must rise to the occasion,” he concluded.

Easy and Cute Natural Hairstyles for Kids with Black Hair

0

When it comes to styling kids’ hair, comfort, and simplicity are key. Parents of children with Black hair know that natural hairstyles not only celebrate their unique texture but also allow for versatility and creativity. From everyday looks to special occasions, there are numerous easy and cute options that can be achieved with minimal time and effort, while still looking adorable.

One of the most popular and practical choices for young girls is the Afro Puff. This style allows the natural curls to shine and can be done quickly. Simply separate the hair into sections, gather it into a high ponytail, and gently fluff the curls to create a voluminous, bouncy look. You can also use fun accessories like colorful hair ties or clips to add some flair.

For a more intricate but still simple option, two-strand twists are a fantastic choice. This hairstyle involves dividing the hair into sections and twisting each section into two strands. It’s a protective style that keeps the hair neat and is great for maintaining moisture. Plus, it works well for both short and long hair.

Another cute option is braided pigtails. This timeless style is easy to create and can be dressed up with ribbons or beads. For extra texture, consider adding a few cornrows in the front or on the sides to give the pigtails a unique twist.

For parents looking for something even more straightforward, wash-and-go styles are perfect. These styles embrace the natural curls without much manipulation. Simply apply a curl cream or gel and let the hair air dry for a soft, natural look.

Lastly, Bantu knots are a fun and playful style for kids. Divide the hair into small sections, twist each section, and coil it into a small knot. Secure with a hair tie or bobby pin. This style is easy to create and can last for several days.

Natural hairstyles for kids with Black hair are not only stylish but also gentle on their delicate strands. With these simple yet cute ideas, parents can create protective, fun, and comfortable looks for their children, while helping them embrace their natural beauty.

Growing Ghana’s Creative Industry: Learning from the Nigerian Playbook

0

Over the past decade, Nigeria’s creative industry has evolved into a global powerhouse, especially in the music and film sectors.

From Grammy-nominated Afrobeats stars to Nollywood films on global streaming platforms, Nigeria’s cultural exports have captivated the world.

Their success is no accident—it is the result of a deliberate, structured approach to building a creative economy.

Nigeria’s music industry, particularly its flagship sound, Afrobeats, has grown into a global cultural force. What was once a regional genre is now streamed on global platforms, played in top clubs, and featured in global festivals. This meteoric rise didn’t happen by chance—it is the result of a combination of strategic efforts by artists, industry players, and government institutions.

Nollywood, Nigeria’s film industry, on the other hand, has grown into the second-largest film industry in the world in terms of volume, producing over 2,500 films annually. From humble beginnings in the early 1990s, Nollywood has become a multi-billion-dollar sector and a major cultural export across Africa and beyond.

According to an estimate from Business Day Nigeria, in 2021 alone, Nollywood employed 300,000 persons. A situation that is expected to have more than quadrupled by the end of 2025, according to Jobberman projections.

Deliberate steps were taken to achieve this success. The content of movies resonated with local and regional audiences because they featured African faces and relatable storylines, they addressed themes like family, spirituality, politics, and urban life, and they used indigenous languages and Pidgin English for mass appeal.

Ghana, a nation equally blessed with rich cultural heritage and artistic talent, has every opportunity to rise to similar prominence. Yet, despite flashes of brilliance, we have not sustained the momentum needed to position ourselves as creative leaders on the African continent. The time has come to learn from our neighbours—not merely to copy, but to adopt what works and build a strategy that works for us. These are some pointers we could look at;

Match Policy with Purposeful Investment

One of the biggest drivers of Nigeria’s creative boom has been real financial investment, backed by government initiatives like the Project ACT Nollywood Fund and strategic partnerships.

Though late, public policy began to support Nollywood: The Project Nollywood Fund by the Bank of Industry offered grants for production and capacity building. Nigeria’s Creative Industry Finance Initiative backed training and production.

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) began regulation to improve content standards. In music, the government has instituted and implemented initiatives that have further championed the growth of the industry.

The Nigeria Creative Industry Development Bill for instance, aims to formalize and support the entertainment sector funding.

If the Ghana entertainment industry will grow and compete on the global stage, the government must be deliberate in supporting with practical policies. The arts is not cheap. According to Ghanaian Filmmaker, Peter Sedufia in an interview with Channel One TV, it cost him nothing less than USD 200,000 to produce his Aloe Vera movie which eventually ended up on Netflix, featured at global film festivals and won several awards. Ghana needs a Creative Industries Fund to support content creators across sectors—film, music, fashion, theatre, and digital arts. This must be complemented by tax incentives to attract private sector investment into the creative space.

Build the Right Infrastructure

Ghanaian creators often lack access to the tools and spaces needed to produce high-quality work. We need creative hubs—well-equipped spaces with sound studios, editing suites, rehearsal spaces, cinema halls and stages. Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi could become creative corridors if we commit to public-private partnerships that support infrastructure development in the arts.

It is painful to admit that, as a nation that prides itself as a promoter of the creative arts, the National Theatre remains the only ideal facility for live performances, be it theatre or musical concerts in the country. The National Theatre of Ghana is in a very sorry state and lacks many functional equipment, not to talk about state of the art. Infrastructural development could begin with the very institutions meant to train creatives, like the completion of the Arts Complex of the School of Performing Arts, University of Ghana, which has been under construction for over 15 years.

Develop and Protect Talent

While Ghana boasts of immense talent, the industry lacks structured support for growth. Perhaps due to our perception of the arts. We must integrate creative arts into our educational system, from primary schools to universities. Additionally, we should partner with global institutions for mentorship and exchange programmes.

There must be avenues for graduates of music, acting, directing, etc to practice right after school under the National Service Scheme. In Nigeria platforms like Mavin Records, Chocolate City, and Empire Africa have created professional structures for talent grooming and global distribution. Nigeria’s strategic collaborations is one sure way of tapping into the expertise of Hollywood and gain exposure. Wizkid’s “Essence”, featuring Tems and Justin Bieber and Davido’s collaboration with Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj are just a few examples. Although few Ghanaian musicians have been successful with international collaboration, there must be a deliberate move to do more.

Nollywood today is collaborating with South Africa, Hollywood and Bollywood to produce movies. Equally important is the enforcement of intellectual property rights to protect the hard work of our creatives. The Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO), the Musicians Union of Ghana (MISIGA) and the Ghana Actors Guild must be better resourced to carry out their mandate.

Go Digital—Globally

Nigerian artists understand how to use digital and global platforms to their advantage. Ghanaians must be trained and supported to do the same. We need to help our creators understand digital algorithms, trends, and viral marketing. Our content must be created with the global audience in mind, without losing our authenticity.

In leveraging digital platforms and global distribution, Nigerian artists have aggressively utilized platforms such as YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, Audiomack, Instagram and TikTok. According to the IFPI Global Music Report 2023, sub-Saharan Africa was the fastest-growing region globally, with Nigeria leading the way, driven largely by streaming. The IFPI 2023 report further states that, in 2022, Nigeria accounted for 66% of sub-Saharan Africa’s total music streaming revenue.

Nigerian songs like CKay’s “Love Nwantiti” became global sensations largely through TikTok trends. Today, Nigerian film companies like EbonyLife, Inkblot, and FilmOne are internationally recognized. The shift from DVD to digital was crucial. Platforms like iROKOtv, YouTube, and later Netflix provided global access. In 2015, Netflix began acquiring Nollywood content. By 2020, it commissioned Nigerian originals with YouTube becoming a distribution outlet for diaspora audiences, growing revenue through ads and partnerships.

Ghana must make be a deliberate attempt to create more Stonebwoys, Joe Mettles, Black Sherrifs, Sarkodies, Shatta Wales, Sparrow Productions and OldFilms Productions to flood the digital space with Ghanaian content for an appreciable global representation.

Promote National Pride in the Arts

To grow the creative industry, we must shift mindsets. The arts are not just a pastime; they are a profession. Schools, media, and families must encourage children who want to become filmmakers, dancers, or musicians. Nigeria has succeeded in using Nollywood as a powerful tool for promoting their stories, values and identity globally. National campaigns celebrating our arts and artists can create an environment of respect and support. The Lagos Theatre Festival celebrates Nigerian heritage, languages, dance, music and theatre, drawing attention to the country’s rich artistic traditions.

Ghana can boast of creatives who have risen to occupy high offices of the land. The likes of Efua T. Sutherland, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Fritz Baffoe, John Dumelo are but a few examples to help change the mindset of parents who still discourage their wards from pursuing careers in the arts; looking down on and referring to the arts as ‘Dondology’ is quite primitive.

Define a Ghanaian Creative Identity

Just as Afrobeats became a powerful global identity for Nigeria, Ghana can build a distinct creative brand rooted in our unique rhythms, fashion, languages, and storytelling. Our “December in GH” campaign is an excellent platform. Let’s expand it to include more cultural showcases, international collaborations, and deliberate positioning of Ghana as West Africa’s cultural capital. The Nigerian music and movie industries in appealing to their audiences both home and abroad remain authentic by incorporating local languages (Yoruba, Igbo, Pidgin English), traditional rhythms, and storytelling in their works. This authenticity creates a unique and exportable cultural product.

Ghana’s Highlife Music is an heirloom. We have a duty to protect and develop it and bequeath to generations to come. We have not done so well with Highlife. There must be a deliberate effort to encourage young and new musicians to infuse highlife into their works. Some Ghanaian young musicians are unable to breakthrough because they sound like their Nigerian counterparts making it difficult to brand their works with true and indigenous Ghanaian identity. We need to bring back our MOGOs and Highlife Festivals to revive our taste and love for Highlife Music.

In Summary

There is no shortcut to creative success. It requires vision, commitment, and strategic investment. Ghana must support its creative sector not only with words but with real resources and respect. The time to act is now.

Governments must move beyond campaign promises and take the creative arts as seriously as any other sector. Our creative arts is our surest and best comparative advantage. Only Ghanaians can best tell the Ghanaian story.

Therefore, our music, like Osibisa’s “Woyaya”, Nana Kwame Ampadu’s “Oman Bo Adwo” and our storytelling, like Kwaw Ansah’s “Heritage Africa” among others must remind us of how we used to do it yester years and be motivated to do much more today.

The world is watching Africa. Let’s ensure that when they look our way, they see Ghana’s light shining just as brightly.

CIC calls for shift in Ghana’s eating habits to fight diseases, climate change

0

By Rebecca Som

Accra, 30 April, (GNA) – Mr Emmanuel Fiagbey, the Executive Director of Communication Initiatives for Change (CIC), a non-profit organisation, has urged Ghanaians to consciously reduce their meat consumption as a vital step towards sustainable living.

Speaking at the commemoration of the World Earth Month at the University of Ghana, Mr Fiagbey called on the public to adopt a “eat meat once a week” culture to improve their personal health.

The event, aimed at examining how food choices, particularly red and white meat, impact health, the environment, and the climate, was on the theme: ‘’Managing Food Waste to Save the Environment – Our Earth.”

He highlighted the need to improve personal health and lower the risk of non-communicable diseases, notably diabetes and stroke.

“It has been scientifically proven that excessive meat intake places undue pressure on the kidneys,” Mr Fiagbey said, emphasising the consumption of sustainable foods like fruits and vegetables.

“Reducing meat consumption is intended to help us protect ourselves from certain non-communicable diseases, most especially diabetes, heart disease, kidney stones, obesity, and some cancers.”

He cited recent studies by the University of Cape Coast, Bielefeld University (Germany), the University of Queensland (Australia), and the Ghana Education Service, which revealed that only 27.8 per cent of Ghanaian youth consume sufficient fruits and vegetables.

“This is in contrast to South Africa at 68 per cent, Uganda at 87.8 per cent, Nigeria at 73 per cent, and Kenya at 94 per cent,” he said.

The statistics indicate a concerning trend of unhealthy eating habits among Ghanaian youth, where meat was prioritised over fruits and vegetables, Mr Fiagbey said.

He noted that the carbon footprint associated with producing one pound of meat posed a significant environmental threat.

“Consequently, CIC’s ‘Meatless Monday’ initiative focuses on environmental preservation and raising awareness about the importance of protecting the Earth,” he said.

“The Meatless Monday encourages the consumption of more sustainable foods, reduces food waste by promoting longer food preservation, and fosters a culture of composting food waste.”

Meatless Monday is a global campaign that encourages individuals to improve their health by abstaining from meat one day each week.

Professor Marian Asantewah Nkansah, Environmental Chemist, shared insights on the broader interventions and strategies to adopt to make use of wasted food.

She emphasised on converting food waste into compost, repurposed as animal feed, or even processed into biogas, offering a sustainable solution to reducing waste.

“You can have a farm or a backyard where excess food goes into. You can dig a hole create your own composite and set up your own farm,” she said.

Ghana’s petroleum hub requires unified action – Petroleum Hub CEO at inter-agency dialogue

0

The Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC), Dr Toni Aubynn, has called for sustained and meaningful collaboration among regulatory and government agencies to ensure the successful delivery of Ghana’s ambitious Petroleum Hub project.

Speaking at the corporation’s first-ever Inter-Agency Dialogue on April 30, 2025, Dr Aubynn said the hub’s realisation depends not on isolated efforts but on coordinated action across both public and private institutions.

“We are here because we recognise that the success of Ghana’s petroleum hub vision is interlinked—not with one agency, one ministry, or one entity—but with the harmonised efforts of many institutions,” Dr Aubynn said in his keynote address.

The summit, themed “Building the Energy Hub of Choice: Unlocking Synergies for a Globally Competitive Petroleum and Petrochemical Hub”, brought together sector ministers, heads of regulatory authorities, and industry leaders to explore how improved coordination can enhance investor confidence and eliminate bottlenecks.

According to Dr Aubynn, fragmented efforts have already cost the country valuable investment opportunities. He said duplication, delayed approvals, and inconsistent communication contribute to perceptions of bureaucracy that deter potential investors. He urged all institutions involved in the hub project to adopt a culture of timely and transparent inter-agency coordination.

“Too often, our efforts have been siloed. We’ve had good intentions but fragmented actions. The result? Delays in policy execution, missed investment opportunities, and a general perception of bureaucracy that deters the very partners we are trying to attract,” he stated.

He added that the PHDC’s vision for the hub goes beyond physical infrastructure, aiming to position Ghana as the heartbeat of West Africa’s energy transformation through job creation, innovation, and industrialisation.

“We envision a hub that becomes the beating heart of energy transformation in West Africa—a hub that creates jobs, drives innovation, builds local capacity, and strengthens Ghana’s economic sovereignty,” Dr Aubynn said.

Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon Richard Gyan-Mensah, also addressed the forum, highlighting Ghana’s geographic advantage and petroleum assets as key to becoming a regional energy leader. He acknowledged the Petroleum Hub project as central to government policy and urged stakeholders to break down institutional silos for faster and more effective results.

Similarly, Minister of Trade and Industry Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare described the project as a cornerstone of Ghana’s trade strategy, stressing that it has the potential to position the country as a regional trading powerhouse.

The panel discussion featured CEOs from the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Petroleum Authority, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority, all of whom pledged their commitment to streamlining licensing and permitting processes for the hub.

The event ended with a collective pledge from participating agencies to improve coordination and execution, with PHDC Deputy CEOs Halimatu Sadia Abdulai Abu and Onasis Rosely delivering the opening and closing remarks respectively.

China echoes respect for UN principles, advance agenda for humanity

By Stephen Asante

GNA Special Correspondent, Beijing, China

Beijing, April 30, GNA – The Chinese Government has rallied global leaders to up efforts at protecting the principles of the United Nations (UN) to advance the cause of humanity.

Mr Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs, said it was imperative to jointly build peace and seek development while promoting the great progress of human civilisation.

Addressing a meeting of the BRICS Foreign Ministers, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Chinese top diplomat drew attention to the fact that the international pattern had undergone profound changes since the founding of the UN some 80 years ago.

The world had entered a period of turbulence and transformation, he noted, adding that the cause of peace and development was facing new and severe challenges.

“The basic concept of international cooperation has been eroded, the development foundation of international relations has been continuously challenged, and the international environment for peaceful development is facing impacts,” Mr Wang said.

“At this critical moment in history, whether countries can make the right choices is crucial to the future of humanity,” he said.

A statement issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry on the BRICS meeting, a copy made available to journalists in Beijing, China, said the world ought to give serious consideration to the Global Security Initiative put forward by President Xi Jinping.

BRICKS is an intergovernmental organisation composed of 10 countries; Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

The initiative espouses the need to jointly discuss security governance on the premise of mutual respect, build lasting peace based on fairness and justice, and embark on a new path of security featuring dialogue rather than confrontation, partnership rather than alliance, and win-win cooperation rather than zero-sum game.

“We should uphold an objective and just stance, adhere to resolving differences through dialogue and negotiation, support the United Nations agencies to perform their duties, and create conditions for the political settlement,” Mr Wang emphasised.

He said the People’s Republic of China supported all efforts to peacefully resolve the Ukraine crisis, and “hopes that the parties concerned will solve the root causes of the crisis and reach a fair, lasting, binding and acceptable peace agreement by all parties as soon as possible”.

Additionally, the Asian giant was willing to work with other BRICS members to achieve long-term stability and peace in the Middle East.

“The top priority of the Middle East issue is to promote a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza to relieve the humanitarian disaster.

“The long-term solution is to promote the ‘two-state solution’ to achieve peaceful coexistence between the State of Palestine and the State of Israel,” the Foreign Minister said.

He said as a constructive force for good on the international stage, BRICS countries should take the lead in being the mainstay of the cause of peace and development.

He implored the leaders to continue to hold high the banner of open cooperation, firmly safeguard the multilateral trading system, and promote the mutually beneficial and integrated development of all countries.

They should also support inclusive economic globalisation, Mr Wang said, adding that China was willing to strengthen practical cooperation with BRICS countries in poverty reduction, agriculture, education, health and other fields, and provide more public goods for the Global South.

He urged the leaders to strive to support the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Working Group, strengthen information sharing and experience exchange, and promote law enforcement cooperation and capacity-building.

“We should build the BRICS Vaccine Research and Development Centre well, earnestly implement the BRICS Food Security Cooperation Strategy, expand cooperation in new fields such as the deep sea, polar regions and outer space, and jointly meet global challenges.

BRICS is an acronym representing Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Originally, it referred to the first five countries, but it has since expanded to include Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, and Iran.

Zoomlion blames govt for inadequate GH¢258 worker allowance

0

Zoomlion Ghana Limited has acknowledged that the GH¢258 monthly allowance given to its workers is inadequate but stated that it cannot be held responsible for the low amount, as it is the government, through the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), that determines and disburses the payments.

This follows increasing public criticism and calls for the non-renewal of Zoomlion’s contract due to concerns of alleged exploitation of its beneficiaries.

The contract, which dates back to 2006 under President John Agyekum Kufuor, is renewable every four years and has reportedly expired.

The matter gained national attention after investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni raised questions over the current agreement between YEA and Zoomlion, under which the company receives GH¢850 per worker, but only GH¢258 is paid to the beneficiaries. Critics have described the situation as both meagre and exploitative.

Some stakeholders have since proposed that the government should directly pay the beneficiaries through District Assemblies and the YEA to promote transparency and ensure fair compensation.

Speaking to journalists in Kumasi on Wednesday, April 30, Eugene Amo Asamoah, Business Development Manager at the Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant, admitted that the GH¢258 allowance is insufficient.

However, he stressed that Zoomlion does not set the amount and has in fact advocated for an increase that was not approved.

“Zoomlion is not the one that determines the amount that is supposed to be paid to the beneficiaries. It is the government under YEA that determines the amount to be paid to these beneficiaries. There has been an engagement with the YEA to increase their money to 500, but it hasn’t been heeded.

“So now we are here, if we feel that these allowances are small, which they are, the government, which is the paymaster, who pays the beneficiaries, should help them by increasing their allowances or the model so that these beneficiaries can be catered for.”

He further explained that while the government is contractually obligated to pay the workers directly through YEA and District Assemblies, Zoomlion stepped in to make upfront payments due to the government’s delays, expecting subsequent reimbursements.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency, Malik Basintale, has announced that the contract with Zoomlion will not be renewed in its current form.

Bawku Conflict: GBA advocates support for Asantehene, other mediators

By Agnes Ansah

Accra, April 30, GNA-The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has called for support for the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and all the traditional authorities involved in resolving the Bawku conflict.

A resolution passed at the GBA’s 2025 mid-year conference on Saturday in Accra called for support for the revered traditional leaders considering how the conflict impacted negatively on lives and property, and on national cohesion.

The resolution was signed by Mrs Efua Ghartey, National President, GBA, and Mr Kwaku Gyau Baffour, the National Secretary of the Association.

“The GBA noting with deep concern the conflict in Bawku, and recognising its devastating impact on lives, property, and national cohesion, hereby calls for strong and unwavering support for the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and all traditional authorities engaged in the mediation process…,” portions of the resolution read.

While calling for support, the GBA urged all parties to cooperate fully and respect the outcomes of mediation aimed at restoring peace.

The Bawku conflict has spanned ages and resulted in the death of hundreds of people, with others fleeing the area to seek shelter and better lives elsewhere.

Measures, including the deployment of security agencies, imposition of curfews and peace talks, have been employed to salvage the situation but to no avail.

However, on April 15, the Asantehene officially announced crucial mediation sessions, which commenced on April 28 and expected to end on May 1 at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

The GBA commended the urgent and genuine mediation efforts in the conflict, emphasising the importance of peace, dialogue, and national unity.

It committed to using its voice and platform to advocate a peaceful resolution and support any constitutional and legal measures necessary to secure lasting peace in Bawku.

The GBA also touched on pertinent issues in the country, including the suspension of the Chief Justice, Ablekuma North parliamentary elections impasse and illegal mining, otherwise known as galamsey.

On the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, the GBA called on President John Dramani Mahama to revoke the suspension, describing the action as unconstitutional and lacking a legal basis under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

On Ablekuma North, the Bar Association called on the Electoral Commission, the 2024 Election Security Task Force, particularly the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant authorities to take immediate and necessary steps to complete collation process and declare the results of the parliamentary elections to uphold the democratic rights of the constituents.

It urged the Judiciary to expedite the hearing of galamsey-related cases and ensure that offenders were held accountable in accordance with the law, considering the grave threat it posed to Ghana’s environment, water bodies, farmlands, and public health.

Over 90% of pensioners earn less than GH¢5,000 monthly

Managing Director of EDC Investment Ltd., Paul Kofi Mante play videoManaging Director of EDC Investment Ltd., Paul Kofi Mante

The Managing Director of EDC Investment Ltd., Paul Kofi Mante, has bemoaned the state of pensions in Ghana currently.

According to him, only about 10% of Ghanaians have pension schemes.

According to him, a lot of Ghanaians who are enrolled on SSNIT earn below GH¢5,000 as a monthly pension.

He noted that workers must make sure to invest in their future in order to improve their quality of life even after retirement.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Business and Financial Times – Ecobank The Money Summit, he said, “About over 90% of people who are on pension at the moment are getting less than 5,000 cedis a month. But my biggest worry is the fact that we should average about 2 million people who are more than 60.

“But the number of people who are on the SSNIT pension at the moment is less than 300,000. So the question we need to ask is, what happens to that? About 1.7 million other people are not on the SSNIT pension,” he added.

The Money Summit was under the theme, “Optimising Investment and Pensions Management: Strategies for Sustainable Retirement Income and Economic Growth”.

According to Mante, several factors prevent people from investing, including low salaries.

He, however, noted that despite these challenges, it is important to invest in a wealthier future.

“And one of the reasons why it’s important to invest is that you want to invest towards old age. And in the session, we talked about the number of reasons, like low monthly payment, monthly pension payment in several developing countries, including Ghana.

“We discuss things like longer life expectancy. People are living longer than before. So, the retirement age is 60. So you can easily retire at 60 and live to 90, or live till 85. That will be 85 years without a regular monthly income. And the fact that children should be seen as a responsibility rather than a retirement plan,” he noted.

Lawrence Adjah Tetteh’s time at Hearts of Oak was marked by unforgettable moments, particularly during the intense battles against their arch-rivals, Asante Kotoko.

One memory from the 2004 CAF Confederation Cup final still stands out for the former Hearts of Oak midfielder. Tetteh played an instrumental role, scoring the equalizer as the Phobians defeated Asante Kotoko at the Baba Yara Stadium to clinch the maiden edition of the Confederation Cup title.

In an interview with Happy FM, Tetteh recalled an unexpected and dramatic reaction from an Asante Kotoko fan that highlighted the fierce nature of one of Ghana’s biggest rivalries.

“I’ve played many games for Hearts against Kotoko and in Africa. One that stays with me is the 2004 Confederation Cup. After that game, someone joked, ‘I wish I could shoot you just so you don’t play against Kotoko again!’” Tetteh shared.

Although the comment was made in jest, it speaks volumes about the intensity of the Hearts-Kotoko rivalry, where emotions run high and every match is a source of pride.

The two clubs will face each other once again on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium as they aim to improve their season’s performance.

Akonta Mining sues Lands Minister, Minerals Commission demands GHC20m in damages

0

Akonta Mining Company Limited has filed a lawsuit against the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, and the Minerals Commission, challenging the recent revocation of its mining lease.

The company’s legal action follows the government’s decision, announced on Monday, April 21, 2025, to cancel Akonta Mining’s license due to its alleged involvement in illegal mining—popularly known as galamsey—within protected forest reserves.

At a press briefing in Accra on the same day, Minister Armah-Kofi Buah disclosed findings from recent undercover investigations. He revealed that Akonta Mining, although licensed to operate off-reserve, had encroached on the Aboi and Tano Nimiri Forest Reserves in the Western North Region without the necessary permits.

“Although Akonta Mining holds a license to operate off-reserve, the company had encroached on the Aboi and Tano Nimiri Forest Reserves in the Western North Region,” the Minister said.

He further alleged that the company had commercialised access to these forest reserves, selling concessions to illegal miners for as much as GHS 300,000. Some miners were also reported to have paid up to 250 grams of gold weekly in royalties to Akonta Mining.

In response to these claims, the company filed a suit on Tuesday, April 29, seeking GHS 20 million in damages and a retraction of what it describes as defamatory statements.

According to the statement of claim:

“Special/aggravated damages for libel published by the Defendant herein and republished by local and international media in the sum of Ghc20,000,000 (Twenty Million Ghana Cedis).”

The company is also demanding:

“An order compelling the Defendant to retract the defamatory statements published against the Plaintiff Company and issue an unqualified public apology with equal prominence across media platforms, including television, radio, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and X.”

Other reliefs sought include:

  • An order of perpetual injunction restraining the Minister from making further defamatory statements.

  • Full reimbursement of legal costs and lawyer’s fees.

  • Any other relief the court may deem appropriate.

The case is expected to test the balance between government enforcement against illegal mining and the legal rights of affected companies.

Digital Innovation, key to transforming healthcare in underserved communities

0

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni

Accra, April 30,GNA- Dr. Koku Awoonor Williams, Technical Advisor at the Ministry of Health, has emphasised the critical role of digital innovation in strengthening healthcare delivery, particularly in Ghana’s underserved and rural communities.

The consultant highlighted how technology-driven solutions, including telemedicine, electronic medical records, and mobile health services, are bridging gaps in access to quality care.

He made these remarks at a high-level health conference held at the University of Ghana on the theme, “Advancing evidence-based innovations in strengthening health systems in Africa.”

The conference was a platform for knowledge exchange, reinforcing the need for interdisciplinary partnerships to accelerate health system innovations across Africa.

Dr. Williams stressed that Ghana, like many sub-Saharan l nations, faced significant health system challenges, including workforce shortages, infrastructural limitations, and financial barriers.

However, the consultant noted that digital innovations were proving transformative in overcoming the obstacles.

“Electronic Medical Records (EMR) have improved data-driven decision-making and continuity of care at all health facility levels.

Telemedicine and mobile health services provide specialist care and health information to patients in hard-to-reach areas, reducing the need for long-distance travel.”

“Additionally, integrated digital systems track disease patterns, enabling proactive responses to emerging health threats,” he said.

The consultant also underscored advancements in emergency healthcare, where digital platforms now enable real-time coordination between ambulance services and hospitals.

“GPS tracking and digital dispatch systems ensure faster response times, while interoperable systems allow emergency teams to access patient records during crises,” he said.

Professor Ayaga Agula Bawah, Director of the Regional Institute of Population Studies, said innovation affords health experts the opportunity to explore better ways of healthcare delivery.

“So, innovation allows us to be able to explore new ideas and new ways of doing things, and then to be able to see how those new ways can improve the system. And so, within the health sector, innovation is very critical to implementation and health development,” he said.

He added that the adoption of digital innovation in health systems would help in finding and addressing important gaps or needs within the existing healthcare system.

Seized galamsey excavators deployed for emergency dredging in Koforidua

0

The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has ordered the immediate deployment of seized galamsey excavators for emergency dredging and desilting works in the New Juaben North and South Municipalities, following severe flooding caused by a heavy downpour in Koforidua.
The four-hour rainfall submerged several homes and shops in areas including Nsukwao, Asokore, and Zongo. Critical institutions such as the Eastern Regional Office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the main road to the Eastern Regional National Fire Service Command were also affected.

Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey, who toured the hardest-hit communities with officials from NADMO and Urban Roads, announced urgent steps to mitigate further disaster.

She directed the immediate use of seized galamsey excavators for clearing choked drains.

“The REGSEC in the Western Region has seized some excavators from our illegal miners. We are going to look around to get fuel so that, immediately…we start dredging the choked waterways.”
Assemblyman for the Ada Magazine Electoral Area, Freeman Kojo Gaan, revealed that between 50 and 100 homes were affected in his jurisdiction and commended the minister’s prompt action.

“…About 50 or 100 houses have been destroyed, and I am very happy about the minister’s move, and this is the type of productive leadership that we all want.”

Shatta Wale issues apology to Bullgod over 2022 allegations

0

Popular dancehall musician Shatta Wale has rendered an unfounded apology to his former manager Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, also known as Bullgod, over allegations he made in 2022.

In the apology letter, directed to Bullgod and shared on his socials, Shatta Wale apologised for accusing Bullgod of having a hand in the unsolved murder of artiste manager Fennec Okyere in 2014 and retracted his statements.

The ‘Freedom’ hitmaker also apologised for statements made on November 2, 2022, in which he accused Bullgod and other individuals of immoral conduct.

“On November 2, 2022, I published a series of posts on my social media pages and handles about MR. LAWRENCE NANA ASIAMAH HANSON alias BULLDOG. The publications included a statement that I have now come to know was generally misunderstood or misconstrued as MR. HANSON’s confessions to me that he had a hand in the murder of FENNEC OKYERE (alias FENICKS).

“I wish to retract each of the statements in the said series of publications, as I did not mean to say that MR. HANSON had a hand in the murder of FENNEC OKYERE. I also wish to apologise to MR. HANSON and all the persons whom my publications of November 2, 2022, have caused pain, agony, anguish, shame, ridicule, or hatred,” he posted.

How did it start?⁣

The public sparring began with Shatta Wale accusing Bullgod (then known as Bulldog) and other industry figures of hindering the music industry’s progress, calling for them to be banned.

Shatta Wale dismissed Bullgod as an “errand boy” and accused him of adultery and hiring prostitutes .

The feud took a darker turn in 2022 when Shatta Wale threatened to expose Bullgod’s alleged involvement in the 2014 murder of Fennec Okyere.

Shatta Wale claimed Bullgod had confided in him about the crime and vowed to testify in court.

Bullgod sued Shatta Wale for defamation, seeking damages for the “malicious” claims.

The Ghana Police Service opened an investigation into Shatta Wale’s allegations, though no charges were filed against Bullgod, who was previously arrested but cleared in 2017 due to lack of evidence.

The feud persisted in 2024, with Shatta Wale and Bullgod continuing to trade insults on social media.

Most Ghanaians support the abolishment of the Council of State

0

The Chairperson of the Constitutional Review Committee, Prof. Henry Kwasi Prempeh The Chairperson of the Constitutional Review Committee, Prof. Henry Kwasi Prempeh

The Chairperson of the Constitutional Review Committee, Prof. Henry Kwasi Prempeh, has stated that a significant number of citizens are calling for the abolition of the Council of State, according to a report by CitiNewsroom.com.

He also noted that public sentiment suggests the Council, in its current form, lacks a meaningful role in Ghana’s governance structure.

Speaking at an event organised by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) on April 30, 2025, Professor Prempeh said, “There is the view that if we must have a Council of State, then it must at least be in a position to resolve very high-level issues when it comes to peace and conflict resolution. There is a search for a better purpose for the Council of State.”

Professor Prempeh further explained that many citizens perceive the Council as an extension of presidential influence, primarily because most of its members are appointed by the President. This perception, he argued, undermines the credibility and independence of the advisory body.

“If we were to reconstitute it in terms of membership, how would we go about it? The sense that it is dominated by handpicked presidential appointees means it doesn’t make a difference. The President already has his own council, his Cabinet, so there is no point in paying attention to the Council of State,” he said.

During the swearing-in of the 31-member Council of State on February 18, 2025, Council Chairman and former Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho, acknowledged the public calls for the Council’s abolition.

Despite the criticisms, Doe Adjaho reassured the President of the Council’s commitment to fulfilling its duties diligently in support of national development.

“It is true that many have questioned the relevance of the Council of State, and some have even called for its abolition. But we want to assure you that this Council of State will be a Council of difference. Mr. President, you can count on us day and night; we shall respond,” he stated.

Petroleum Hub Development Corporation hosts inaugural Inter-Agency Dialogue

CEO of Petroleum Hub Development Corporation, Dr Toni Aubynn CEO of Petroleum Hub Development Corporation, Dr Toni Aubynn

The Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC) achieved a significant milestone in its mission to attract investment to Ghana’s Petroleum Hub project by successfully hosting its first inter-agency dialogue on April 30, 2025, in Accra.

The summit, themed “Building the Energy Hub of Choice: Unlocking Synergies for a Globally Competitive Petroleum and Petrochemical Hub,” convened ministers, regulatory agencies, and key stakeholders to share expertise and knowledge on streamlining processes for licensing and permitting investments in the Petroleum Hub.

In his address, the Deputy Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah, articulated how the Petroleum Hub aligns with the government’s ambitious energy sector goals.

He emphasized Ghana’s strategic positioning amid a global energy transition, underscoring the need to establish the country as a key hub for the storage, refining, and distribution of petrochemical products.

“Ghana’s geographic advantage, existing infrastructure, political stability, and emerging petroleum assets create a unique opportunity,” Gyan-Mensah stated.

“The vision for the Petroleum Hub is bold: to create a fully integrated petroleum and petrochemical hub that meets Ghana’s domestic energy demands while serving as a major export node for West Africa and beyond.”

He described the project as transformative for Ghana’s energy sector and urged government agencies to collaborate closely with the PHDC.

“The theme of this dialogue – ‘Strengthening Collaboration for a Globally Competitive Petroleum Industry’ – is not just fitting; it is critical. Misalignment among agencies, overlapping mandates, and delayed approvals have hindered progress. This dialogue aims to bridge that gap,” he added.

The Chief Executive Officer of the PHDC, Dr Toni Aubynn, delivered a keynote address emphasizing the importance of inter-agency collaboration in securing the $60 billion needed for the project. He urged stakeholders to work cohesively, avoid siloed efforts, and ensure a seamless, investor-friendly process.

“The success of Ghana’s Petroleum Hub vision hinges on the harmonized efforts of multiple institutions, both public and private,” Dr. Aubynn said. “Siloed actions have led to delays, missed opportunities, and perceptions of bureaucracy that deter investors. This dialogue is our chance to change that narrative and move forward together.”

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, positioned the Petroleum Hub as central to the government’s trade agenda.

“This dialogue marks a significant step toward positioning Ghana as a cornerstone for trade and energy in Africa and beyond,” she said. “By aligning national ambitions with global market realities, we can transform Ghana into a trading powerhouse.”

The panel discussion at the event featured the CEOs of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA), and Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), who affirmed their steadfast commitment to streamlining and expediting the processes for issuing licenses and permits.

The opening and closing remarks were delivered by Halimatu Sadia Abdulai Abu, Deputy CEO for Finance and Administration, and Onasis Rosely, Deputy CEO for Operations and Technical, respectively.

The event concluded with a collective pledge from all participants to diligently execute their roles in advancing the Petroleum Hub project.

Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku has reportedly become a transfer target for South African giants Orlando Pirates, according to AfricaSoccer.

The Ghanaian forward is being considered ahead of the summer transfer window, with his representatives reportedly working to secure a move to one of South Africa’s top three clubs.

Opoku has displayed strong form in the Ghana Premier League and is believed to be ready for a new challenge outside the country.

Sources close to the player indicate that he is open to a move and would welcome the opportunity to play in a competitive league like the South African Premier Division. His camp believes he has the quality to make an impact if placed in the right environment.

Having previously had a short stint abroad with USM Alger, Opoku returned to Asante Kotoko and has since become a key part of their attack. The forward has scored seven goals in 14 games in the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season.

Govnors fit loose dia seat if dem defect?

Di defection of Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to di APC dey raise moral questions Di defection of Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to di APC dey raise moral questions

Di defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State from di Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to di ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) still dey cause plenty tok.

One issue wey dey for some pipo mind na weda e fit loose im seat becos e comot from di political party wia im bin contest and win di governorship elections, go anoda political party – wey in fact bin contest dat same same election against am.

But Associate Professor of Public Law for Rivers State University, Ritchard Wokocha explain to BBC say im defection no go get any legal implications or even affect im position as govnor as di law no put any tin to stop am.

Wokocha say, “Di law no make any comment on di issue of defection or change of party by an executive officer.

E say, “di law on consequence of change of party and loosing of seat only apply to legislative officers as you go find am under di provision for determining di tenure of legislative officers. So e no affect di President, Vice President, Governor, Deputy Governor and Local Goment Chairmen and dia vice, na only legislative officers e affect.”

PDP fit challenge di defection?

Di Associate Professor of Law say di one wey di PDP wan go court to get back dia mandate wey dem don lose with di defection of di Delta State Governor no go get head as dem no fit take any step wey go affect di Governor.

E say dem fit only take step if na di legislative members wey defect – dat na members of di National Assembly and members of di State House of Assembly.

Oga Wokocha add say if dem defect, according to di law, dem fit get di consequence of losing dia seat – except in di situation wey dia defection happun sake of division in dia party; or serious crises for dia party lead to division; or division in dia party wey lead to a merger of di faction of di party dem belong to with any anoda party.

“No action go affect a defecting govnor. Dat issue dey well settled by di Supreme Court for di case of Atiku Abubakar vs Attorney General of di Federation wen President Obasanjo bin declare im seat vacant for joining di ACN dat time.

So dat issue dey settled.

Di law make no provision wey affect an executive officer wey change im party. So di PDP no go succeed against di [Delta] govnor and im deputy, dem fit only succeed against di legislative seat holders if dem defect.” e tok.

Dis di Law professor say dis na im make Presidents, govnors and Local Goment chairman wey make up di executive arm of goment, get right to move from one party to anoda irrespective of di party wey dem contest and win di election.

Wokocha say di only tin na say e fit raise moral implication as pesin fit say such action na betrayal of di pipo wey elect am especially if na for country wey get an ideology based political party system.

But dis no be di situation for Nigeria as di political party system no dey ideology based.

“Di defection fit dey described as a betrayal of di pipo becos dem vote am sake of say dem prefer di manifesto of dat party and e dey like say e don abandon dat manifesto for di manifesto of odas, and so wen you defect go di oda party, you don betray di pipo by bringing dem under a party wey dem no choose to govern dem.”

Wokocha add say di action also get implication on di kontri democracy as on one hand for di individual level, e no create any serious conflict as e respect di freedom of association by di pesin, as e no loose dat freedom becos e become a governor or an executive officer.

“But on di collective level, e dey destroy democracy wit di way e dey go now, becos democracy recognise opposition, but e be like say as tins dey go now, di kontri don dey turn to a one party State, so dis fit make am a strong moral misconduct wey pipo fit frown against as e for affect di system badly.”

Citizens wey vote fit do sometin against dis defection?

On wetin citizens wey no agree wit di defection of dia govnor wey dem vote to anoda party, Associate Professor Wokocha say becos di defection no mean say di govnor go lose im seat, di citizens no fit do anytin.

Wetin di pipo fit do na for dem to demand make dia representatives for di legislature begin impeachment proceedings to comot di Governor so na more of a political solution, rather dan a legal solution as legally dem no fit do anytin.

“Impeachment sef na political activity, but even impeachment no fit dey on di grounds say di govnor change im party as dat one no be misconduct as e no be a violation of any section of di law.

So e no go be a ground to impeach am. But if di legislative members also follow am defect, then dem no go fit impeach am, so wetin di pipo fit do na to demand a return of dia seat as dia (legislative members) defection mean say dem don vacate and comot from di seat dem vote dem into.

So di pipo gatz to get a strong legal ground but for now, di defection no be legal breach of any provision of di law.” e tok.

‘I’ve called for NPP presidential primaries to be conducted very early’ – Nana B

0

The National Organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has said that he called for the early conduct of the party’s presidential primaries, citing growing concerns over internal fatigue and declining enthusiasm among party members.

This comes after a 2024 presidential candidate aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong, who has formally withdrawn from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing “Thank You” tour, citing security threats to his supporters as the reason behind the decision.

The move comes in the wake of a violent altercation in Kumasi, where a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was stabbed.

The injured individual, affiliated with Unity Hall’s Jama group, had been contracted by Agyapong’s team to perform at a gathering held at the Pentecost Church in Bantama.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse Show, Mr Boakye acknowledged a noticeable withdrawal of some long-serving members from active participation, stressing the urgent need for the party to manage its internal affairs more strategically.

“We know a number of persons who are laying their boots,” he remarked.

He further added “We just have to manage it in a proper manner. That is why for me, I have called for the presidential primaries to be conducted very early.”

Mr Boakye argued that the NPP’s prolonged internal electoral processes in past years have often led to internal divisions, sapping momentum and unity ahead of national contests.

“It looks like we spend too much time on internal elections and then we keep hurting ourselves,” he concluded.

Court convicts Portable, sentences singer to three months in prison

0

Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo on Tuesday convicted controversial singer Habeeb Olalomi Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, and sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment.

Tribune Online recalls that the singer was arraigned before the Magistrate Court in Ifo in April 2023 on a three-count charge bordering on assault and the theft of musical instruments, as stated in charge sheet No. MIF/192C/2023.

The singer was subsequently granted bail in the sum of N300,000, with two sureties from his immediate family.

It was reported that he appeared before the court last Thursday and was later remanded for failing to appear at previous hearings despite multiple adjournments.

The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Olumide Awoleke, had earlier informed the court that the defendant, Habeeb Okikiola, committed the offence on 18 November 2022 at approximately 11:00 hrs in Okeosa, Ilogbo, within the Ifo Magisterial District.

The charge sheet reads:

“That you, Badmus Habeeb Okikiola, aka Portable, and others now at large, on the 18th day of November 2022 at 11:00 hrs, in Okeosa, Ilogbo, within the Ifo Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony, to wit: assault, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 517 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State 2006.

“That you, Habeeb Okikiola Olalomi, on the same date, time, and place in the aforementioned district, did unlawfully assault one Osimosu Emmanuel Oluwafemi (male) by beating him all over his body, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 351 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria 2006.

“That you, Badmus Habeeb Okikiola, aka Portable, on various occasions in the year 2022, at Okeosa, Ilogbo, within the Ifo Magisterial District, did steal some musical equipment, including a Yamaha H55 studio monitor, a complete Studio 2 interface connection cable, and an AKG P420 condenser, thereby committing an offence contrary to Sections 384 and 383 and punishable under Section 390 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, Nigeria, 2006.”

In his judgement, Chief Magistrate Ilo ruled that the singer was guilty of counts 1 and 2.

He sentenced the defendant to one month’s imprisonment with an option of a N10,000 fine for Count 1 and two months’ imprisonment with an option of a N20,000 fine for Count 2.

Adu Boahene, wife plead not guilty to GHs49m corruption charges

0

Former National Signals Bureau (NSB) Director-General Kwabena Adu Boahene and his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, have denied all charges in a high-profile corruption case involving GHS 49 million (approximately $7 million) in alleged fraudulent contracts.

The couple, alongside businesswoman Mildred Donkor and Advantage Solutions Limited, faced an 11-count indictment including stealing, money laundering, defrauding by false pretences, and wilfully causing financial loss to the state.

During today’s hearing at the High Court, the charges were read, and the accused maintained their innocence.

  • Counts 1-3 (Stealing): Adu Boahene pleaded “Not guilty” to three separate counts of stealing public funds.
  • Count 4 (Conspiracy to Steal): Both Adu Boahene and his wife denied collaborating to misappropriate state money.
  • Counts 5-6 (Fraud & Financial Loss): The ex-NSB boss rejected accusations of defrauding the state and causing financial loss through a phantom cybersecurity deal with Israeli firm ISC Holdings Limited.
  • Count 7 (Using Public Office for Profit): Adu Boahene declared, “Not guilty.”
  • Count 8 (Aiding Corruption): His wife also pleaded “Not guilty” to collaborating in the alleged scheme.
  • Count 9 (Obtaining Property by False Pretences): Adu Boahene again denied wrongdoing.

Prosecutors allege that between 2020 and 2023, Adu Boahene siphoned GHS 49 million from NSB coffers under the guise of purchasing nonexistent cyber defence software. Investigations revealed no such systems were ever delivered to Ghana’s security agencies.

His wife, a director of Advantage Solutions Limited, linked to the transactions, is accused of aiding in laundering the funds.

Mildred Donkor, their former bank officer, faces charges for facilitating suspicious financial transfers.

BNC was created by Adu-Boahene and his wife while he was still the NSB boss, and the company was used for the transaction of the security system purchased from the Israeli firm ISC Holdings Limited.

While an initial payment of GHS 9.5 million (about $1.75 million) was transferred to ISC Holdings, no further payments were made to the company.

Instead, subsequent funds were diverted for personal use, including investments and transfers to unknown parties.

The court documents alleged that Adu-Boahene, his wife and Mildred “Therefore ran an elaborate criminal enterprise using A4 (Advantage Solutions Limited) as a holding company through which the stolen funds were funnelled and laundered for their own benefit”.

The documents added that as the holding company for several subsidiary companies, including the Private BNC, A4 received a substantial portion of the stolen funds which were then invested by its shareholders and directors in the business activities of the subsidiaries, including investments in treasury bills, real estate, the manufacturing of fertiliser and rental of luxury cars to VIP customers.

Mr Adu Boahene was arrested on Thursday, March 20th, at the Kotoko International Airport upon his return from abroad by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) in relation to the scandal, but was later granted bail.

Meanwhile, Mr Adu Boahene and his wife have filed a defamation lawsuit against the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, for defamation over statements made during a press conference held on March 24, 2025, over the matter.

In the suit, the plaintiffs alleged that Dr Ayine’s public remarks falsely portrayed them as criminals and fraudsters who had embezzled state funds and engaged in money laundering.

They added that these accusations have severely damaged their reputations and caused distress, public ridicule, and emotional harm, particularly affecting their children, who have reportedly faced taunts in school.

The statement of claim lists several grievances, including:

Publicly branding the plaintiffs as criminals before any court ruling.
Disseminating false allegations about the plaintiffs’ travel history and financial dealings.
Violating national security laws by exposing sensitive matters.
Using media theatrics to determine their guilt and suggest custodial sentences prematurely.
The plaintiffs argue that these actions were driven by malice and an abuse of authority, designed to cause maximum reputational harm.

They are therefore seeking the following reliefs:

Exemplary and punitive damages against the Defendant for publishing and/or broadcasting highly offensive, defamatory material of and concerning the Plaintiffs in his press conference dated the 24th day of March 2025.
ii. An order of perpetual injunction restraining the Defendant from further publishing and/or broadcasting or causing to be published and/or broadcast the said or similar words defamatory of the Plaintiff.

iii. Costs, including lawyer’s professional fees.

Let’s collaborate to make the Petroleum Hub dream a reality

0

The Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC), Dr Toni Aubynn, has called on all relevant stakeholders to work together to ensure the success of Ghana’s Petroleum Hub project.

Addressing representatives from various agencies at the inaugural PHDC Inter-Agency Dialogue on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, Dr Aubynn urged stakeholders to collaborate effectively to eliminate bureaucratic delays and inefficiencies that deter potential investors.

“We are here because we recognize that the success of Ghana’s Petroleum Hub vision is interconnected, not with one agency, one ministry, or one entity alone, but with the harmonised efforts of many institutions, both public and private,” he stated.

“Each of us in this room represents a cog in the wheel of national progress. And when that wheel turns smoothly, through collaboration, shared information, clear mandates, and mutual respect, our nation moves forward,” Dr Aubynn emphasised.

He continued, “Too often, however, our efforts have been siloed. We’ve had good intentions but fragmented actions. The result? Delays in policy execution, missed investment opportunities, and a general perception of bureaucracy that deters the very partners we are trying to attract.”

Dr Aubynn stressed that for progress to be made, inter-agency coordination must become a culture, not an afterthought.

“We must streamline processes, align timelines, reduce duplication, and ensure that our communications are consistent and timely. Investors are watching. Citizens are watching. And they are looking to us for leadership, not just in vision, but in execution,” he said.

He reaffirmed PHDC’s commitment to creating an investor-friendly environment that not only attracts but also retains investment in the Petroleum Hub.

According to Dr Aubynn, the hub will generate numerous job opportunities, contributing significantly to the growth and resilience of the local economy.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, Dr Opoku Prempeh emphasised the significance of the party’s thank-you tour, highlighting it as a gesture of appreciation to its supporters and voters.

47 out of over 5,000 GBA members passed resolution for revocation of CJ’s suspension

0

More details are emerging from the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) 2025 mid-year conference held at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra on April 26, 2025, where a resolution for the revocation of the suspension of Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, was passed.

A member of the association, in an interview with ChannelOne TV, disclosed that fewer than 1% of the registered members of the association, who are more than 5,000, took part in the passage of the resolution.

He said that out of the 3,000 active members of the association, only 52 voted on the resolution against the suspension of the Chief Justice at the mid-year conference.

Out of the 52 lawyers who took part in the passage of the resolution, 47 voted in favour, while 5 voted against it.

These details have been corroborated by a post shared on X by journalist, Kwaku Asante, who indicated that fewer than 100 members of the Bar were at the conference.

He stated that aside from the 52 members who took part in the voting, the others abstained.

The GBA has come under heavy scrutiny following the release of the details of its passed resolution.

The details confirm earlier reports that the GBA is demanding that President John Dramani Mahama revoke the suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo.

The association stated that the suspension of the Chief Justice by President Mahama was unconstitutional.

It argued that Mahama was not a judicial officer and there are no laws currently that give him the power to use his discretion to suspend the Chief Justice.

“The Ghana Bar Association calls for the immediate revocation of the suspension of the Chief Justice, as it considers the suspension to be unconstitutional, considering the fact that the President, who is not a judge or judicial officer, exercised his discretion to suspend the Chief Justice under Article 146(10) of the 1992 Constitution in the absence of a published Constitutional Instrument, Statutory Instrument, or Regulation(s) governing the exercise of his said discretion as required by Article 296 of the 1992 Constitution,” part of the resolution reads.

The association also demanded that President Mahama immediately release details of the determination of the prima facie case by the President and the Council of State.

“In addition, the Ghana Bar Association calls upon the President of the Republic of Ghana to immediately release the full decision establishing a prima facie case against the Chief Justice, consistent with established precedent. This disclosure is necessary to ensure that the process is conducted in accordance with the principles of transparency and fairness,” it said.

Furthermore, the GBA demanded the withdrawal of a directive from the Acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, concerning the assignment of courts and the fixing of dates for newly filed cases and applications.

For Lawrence Adjah Tetteh, playing for Hearts of Oak wasn’t just about domestic glory, it was about chasing the African dream.

From the moment he joined the Phobians, the ambition to qualify for continental competitions was instilled in him by teammates who had lived it. That hunger to compete beyond Ghana’s borders became the fuel that drove him to give everything on the pitch.

In an interview with Happy FM, while addressing the current challenges facing Hearts of Oak, Tetteh reflected on those days as the defining force behind his unwavering commitment to the club.

“I always prayed that Hearts of Oak would qualify for Africa every year because that was the mindset I encountered when I first joined the club. During my time, qualifying for continental competitions wasn’t just a goal; it was a standard. Every season, we made sure we earned the right to play in Africa,” he said.

Tetteh further suggested that the players need this same mentality to lift the club out of its current struggles.

“New players today need that same push. They must understand that wearing the Hearts jersey comes with a responsibility. It’s a big platform, and when you have it, you must rise to the occasion,” he added.

The 46-year-old played an instrumental role in Hearts of Oak’s triumph over Asante Kotoko at the Baba Yara Stadium, clinching the maiden edition of the Confederation Cup title in January 2005.

Meet the 15-year-old Nigerian boy with autism who broke the world’s largest art canvas record

Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, aka Kanye, is making headlines after setting the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the largest art canvas

The 15-year-old Nigerian accomplished this in November 2024, however, he received a formal GWR certificate and his artwork was publicly displayed on April 2, which is designated as World Autism Acceptance Day.

Kanye broke Emad Salehi’s record of 9,652 m² (103,893 ft² 37 in²) for the largest art canvas. The canvas Kanye painted on was 12,303.87 m² (132,437 ft² 116.85 in²).

Kanye started his world record attempt, which he dubbed “Impossibility is a myth,” to raise awareness and serve as a means of raising money for The Zeebah Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports people on the spectrum and their families, according to the Guinness World Record.

Autism is a neurological condition that affects social, language, and interaction skills. In honor of Autism Awareness Month, Kanye used the full month of April to showcase his compelling artwork.

When Kanye was two or three years old, his parents found out he was on the spectrum and wanted him to have a way to express himself. After experimenting with a variety of extracurricular pursuits, Kanye seemed to be particularly drawn to painting and art.

Kanye soon gained recognition for his abstract art and paintings. He received Austria’s Flame of Peace award at the age of eight for using his art to promote peace, becoming the youngest winner. In 2019, he held a solo exhibition at the Terra Kulture Art Gallery titled “Impossibility is a Myth.” In 2022, one of his paintings also appeared on the Art Vancouver Catalogue’s cover page.

A Guinness World Records title, according to Kanye’s parents, has been a unique aspect of their family’s journey and has a greater meaning.

“This opens a whole new world of possibilities for special needs children and their caregivers,” they told GWR. “In addition to autism awareness, inclusion, and neurodiversity, it also gives hope that there are infinite possibilities in every human, irrespective of the diagnosis.”

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu applauded Kanye’s artwork after his recent GWR title attracted widespread attention.

“You are Brave, Audacious, and Tenacious,” he wrote. “Congratulations on your recognition. Your story has made history, and Nigeria is proud of you, Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke.”

Fola David-Tolaram, who has the record for the largest drawing by an individual, also hailed Kanye, calling him a “true champ.”

Kanye’s father, Tagbo Okeke, told The National that the family felt it was necessary to address people’s perceptions about persons on the autism spectrum.

“In Nigeria, there’s still a lot of stigmatization,” he said. “A lot of parents are ashamed, a lot of children are hidden…we started this awareness campaign to tell parents that no child should be left behind, that they are Fabulous, Autistic and Talented.”
