Deal with internal crisis, forget Thank You Tour – Dr Asah-Asante tells NPP

0

A Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana’s Political Science Department has criticised the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s decision to embark on a Thank You Tour.

He believes it is misplaced and unnecessary at this time.

“I don’t think it’s necessary,” Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante said bluntly on Joy News’ PM Express on Monday.

“We have more pressing issues that I would have thought the party will spend more time looking at in detail.”

He pointed to unresolved internal problems that he says must take priority.

“For instance, we saw the bickering and the rancour that characterised the party’s parliamentary and presidential primaries, and it fed into the whole electoral process. You cannot discount this,” he stressed.

According to him, the lingering disputes from the primaries are a major threat to the party’s unity.

“Even though I have not seen their report, this is something that lingers on within the political space,” he said.

“I thought this is an opportune time for them to look at it, deal with it, so that people who are aggrieved, who are disenchanted, you can get them back.”

He specifically mentioned some key figures who need to be reconciled.

“The likes of Amoako Baah, Afoko and co. These are matters that the party needs to deal with at home,” he said.

Dr. Asah-Asante argued that the thank-you tour could have been handled differently.

“The thank-you tour, they could have saved us from the situation with a press release,” he said.

“Then you go into these specific ones that are really rearing their ugly heads into the whole political business within the party and creating all manner of problems.”

In his view, the tour adds no real value to the party’s current challenges. “For me, the tour is a waste of time,” he declared.

He warned that ignoring these issues could deepen the cracks within the party and affect its fortunes in the next elections.

“You need to deal with your house first before you go out to show appreciation,” he advised.

NPP’s Thank You Tour is a waste of time – Dr Asah-Asante

0

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is wasting precious time with its nationwide Thank You Tour when urgent internal matters demand attention, a political science lecturer has said.

Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana’s Political Science Department, said the party should rather focus on healing divisions created during its recent internal contests.

“I don’t think it’s necessary,” he said bluntly on Joy News’ PM Express on Monday.

“We have more pressing issues that I would have thought the party will spend more time looking at in detail.”

He pointed to the tensions and factionalism that marred the NPP’s parliamentary and presidential primaries.

“We saw the bickering and the rancour that characterised the party’s parliamentary and presidential primaries, and it fed into the whole electoral process,” Dr. Asah-Asante said.

“You cannot discount this.”

He warned that the internal wounds are still fresh and need urgent healing before the next general elections.

“This is something that lingers on within the political space,” he said.

“I thought that this is an opportune time for them to look at it, deal with it, so that people who are aggrieved, who are disenchanted, you can get them back.”

He named individuals like former party executives Dr. Amoako Baah and Paul Afoko as examples of those who feel alienated.

“These are matters that the party needs to deal with at home,” Dr. Asah-Asante stressed.

He argued that the Thank You Tour could have been easily replaced with a simple gesture that would not divert attention from critical party work.

“They could have saved us from the situation with a press release,” he suggested.

“And then you go into these specific ones that are really rearing their ugly heads into the whole political business within the party and creating all manner of problems.”

“For me,” he concluded, “the tour is a waste of time.”

Dumsor has not returned – Ministry of Energy PRO insists

0

The Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Isaac Agyei Kwakye, has firmly denied claims that “dumsor” the term used for Ghana’s infamous erratic power supply has returned.

According to him, the recent power outages experienced in parts of the country are due to isolated technical issues, such as faulty cables, and not a sign of generation problems.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, April 28, Kwakye explained that while complaints about power interruptions have been received, the causes are localized and should not be interpreted as a nationwide energy crisis.

“There is no ‘dumsor.’ there is nothing like ‘dumsor,’ and ‘dumsor’ is not back. There have been isolated cases. I stay in Accra, at Madina, and I can tell you that I don’t remember the last time I slept in the dark,” Kwakye stated. “What it means is that the cables there are not faulty.”

He cited examples such as Coco Beach and parts of Nungua, where localized faults were responsible for recent outages.

In these cases, he said, while some areas were without power, nearby communities remained connected — further evidence, he argued, that the problems are specific and infrastructure-related rather than systemic generation failures.

Kwakye emphasized that the ministry is actively working with stakeholders to ensure a stable and reliable power supply across the country. He assured the public that faults are being addressed swiftly to minimize inconvenience.

The clarification comes amid growing frustration among Ghanaians, who have called on the government to find lasting solutions to the recent interruptions.

Global Growth at 3.3% for 2025: Ghana, other countries may adjust their targets for the year

0

The Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu, Atta Issah, has projected that countries across the world, including Ghana, may adjust their economic targets for the year, following the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) forecast of global growth at 3.3% for 2025, with a gradual decline to just above 3% over the next five years well below historical averages.

According to the MP, who is a member of the Finance Committee of Parliament, this slowdown is attributed to factors such as ageing populations, geopolitical tensions, and tightening financial conditions.

He noted that Ghana, currently under an IMF balance of payment support program, may see its economic gains disrupted. However, he stressed that by adapting homegrown solutions and implementing expenditure cuts, as demonstrated by the John Mahama administration, Ghana could maintain a trajectory of growth.

Atta Issah, who had the opportunity as a young MP to join the Ghanaian delegation that travelled to Washington, D.C. for the IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings, shared his observations in a social media post. He noted that attending the meetings provided him with valuable opportunities to learn from global participants and understand the workings of the Bretton Woods Institutions.

“As a member of the Finance Committee of the 9th Parliament of the Republic of Ghana, I needed to do myself some good by keeping an open mind to learn, observe, and build strong relationships,” he stated.

On Debt Concerns, the lawmaker observed that the IMF is increasingly worried about global public debt, which is projected to reach 100% of global GDP by 2030, raising alarms about fiscal sustainability.

He emphasized that emerging markets, in particular, face challenges due to rising borrowing costs and limited access to international capital markets, adding that third-world countries like Ghana are at risk and must take urgent steps to win the confidence of international markets.

On Trade Tensions, the MP disclosed that discussions at the meetings highlighted concerns over the lack of clarity regarding U.S. tariff policies, particularly those during President Donald Trump’s tenure.

He noted that despite numerous trade proposals, no agreements were finalized, leaving global financial leaders worried about the economic outlook — a situation he said has serious implications for countries like Ghana that trade heavily with the U.S.

On Fiscal Consolidation, the legislator observed that Ghana has made notable progress, with the primary fiscal balance improving significantly.

He stated that the government aims to achieve a primary surplus of 1½% of GDP in 2025 through enhanced domestic revenue mobilization and expenditure rationalization. He urged the government to remain committed to this target, as it will significantly contribute to macroeconomic stability.

Speaking on Debt Restructuring, the Sagnarigu MP expressed confidence in Ghana’s comprehensive debt restructuring efforts, including agreements with official creditors and Eurobond holders, which are expected to reduce the country’s debt-to-GDP ratio.

He stated that Ghana’s debt-to-GDP ratio, currently standing at 61.8%, is projected to fall to 55% by the end of 2025 following the completion of the debt exchange program — a significant improvement from 2024.

On Energy Sector Reforms, the MP highlighted the launch of the Energy Sector Recovery Programme aimed at achieving financial stability.

Efforts under this program include renegotiating contracts with Independent Power Producers to reduce costs and alleviate fiscal strain.

He expressed optimism that the upcoming phase two of the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant will reduce gas imports and provide significant fiscal savings for the country.

Touching on Monetary Policy, he commended the Bank of Ghana for maintaining a prudent monetary stance aimed at sustaining inflation reduction and strengthening financial sector stability.

He noted measures such as recapitalizing state-owned banks and rebuilding international reserves as crucial to achieving these goals.

Suggesting a path forward for emerging markets, the Sagnarigu MP recommended prioritizing structural reforms to enhance fiscal resilience, improve governance, and foster private sector investment — reforms he emphasized as critical for sustaining economic growth and development.

On International Support, he observed a strong call for increased support from international financial institutions to address challenges such as weak domestic revenue mobilization and limited access to international capital markets.

He argued that tailored and enhanced technical support is essential for sustainable development.

On Debt Management, the MP asserted that effective debt management strategies, including timely debt restructuring and fiscal discipline, are vital to preventing debt distress and ensuring long-term economic stability.

He commended the recent announcement by the Finance Minister regarding an amendment to the Public Procurement Act to require a commencement certificate before a project can begin.

He praised this measure, stating that it would save the country from having to pay for projects that were never executed.

Finally, he mentioned that agricultural mechanization programs will also help reduce the debt burden, and emphasized the need for increased investment in the agricultural sector.

Nana B shares details of ‘tense’ viral video with Kennedy Agyapong

Nana B has refuted reports of tensions between him and Kennedy Agyapong Nana B has refuted reports of tensions between him and Kennedy Agyapong

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B), has refuted claims of tensions between him and the party’s former flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong.

Addressing a viral video of him and Kennedy Agyapong, which has sparked speculations of tensions between the two, Nana B, during an interview on UTV on Monday, April 28, 2025, said the video has been misrepresented and taken out of context.

“What honourable was telling me was that the way the program was being handled, we should keep things short because the weather was not looking good, and we had to go to Bogoso as well. Honourable Ken is someone who uses gestures when he speaks. He was not warning me — never. Honourable Ken never did that,” he stated.

Having suffered a massive defeat in the 2024 general elections, the NPP, led by its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and other party leaders, is on a Thank You Tour as part of the party’s rebuilding and reorganising processes.

However, some reports have claimed deep acrimony on the tour between Kennedy Agyapong and Dr Bawumia’s camp.

Reacting to the reports, Nana B stated that such claims are fabrications thriving on sensationalism.

He, therefore, urged the public to disregard any such reports, including allegations of him being slapped by the party’s 2024 Campaign Manager, Frederick Opare-Ansah.

“Honourable Opare-Ansah can never do that. He is a gentleman who can never… those behind this should not be causing such unnecessary confusion and fabrications all of a sudden. Just because it is sensational, it thrives,” he stated.

Not everything must be reset

Charles Owusu [L] and President John Mahama Charles Owusu [L] and President John Mahama

An independent parliamentary candidate for Nkoranza North in the 2024 parliamentary election, Charles Owusu, has urged President John Mahama to be cautious in trying to reset everything his government considers to be wrong.

According to the former Director of Operations at the Forestry Commission, not everything is possible to reset.

Speaking during a panel discussion on Peace FM on Friday, April 25, 2025, Charles Owusu urged President Mahama to leave certain things as they are in the best interest of the country.

“I have said it once on this platform that I am very happy that President Mahama has returned to power. What makes me excited about his comeback is that he is a president who will not seek re-election. And so, certain things that have gone wrong in this country he can reset and leave a legacy. I will continue to support him because I am a good citizen; I don’t worship political parties.

But respectfully, I want to tell President Mahama that not everything is possible to reset. There are certain things that, for the sake of the unity of the country and its progress, he should not touch. He should allow them to be as they are.”

It is unclear exactly what Charles Owusu does not want the president to touch.

President John Dramani Mahama, on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo.

According to a statement signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the suspension follows the establishment of a prima facie case against the Chief Justice by the President, in consultation with the Council of State, in relation to three petitions filed against Justice Torkornoo.

“President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Article 146(6) of the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, determined that a prima facie case has been established in respect of three petitions against the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo,” the statement, dated Tuesday, April 22, 2025, read.

Kennedy Agyapong (L) and Kwame Baffoe Abronye Kennedy Agyapong (L) and Kwame Baffoe Abronye

An unexpected altercation that nearly disrupted the New Patriotic Party’s ongoing nationwide “Thank You Tour” on Monday, April 28, 2025, broke out between former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and a presidential aspirant of the party, Kennedy Agyapong, and the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, when the two leaders turned up for the tour in Berekum.

The tour in Berekum at Bono Region led by former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, was almost marred by a near physical confrontation between Kennedy Agyapong and Abronye as they exchanged words at the function.

Abronye, addressing the gathering, seized the moment to tackle some issues he found critical for the party to deal with which bordered on accusations that some members had leveled against him.

He recounted how he has been accused of masterminding a politically diabolic plot against a particular presidential candidate prior to the party’s internal elections last year and also bashed for owing allegiance to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 presidential candidate of the NPP.

Abronye refuted all claims as he spoke heartily to the people and in response to the barrage of criticisms about him, he explained what, to him, has brought the New Patriotic Party to opposition.

“Arrogance is what has brought us here”, he exclaimed.

He warned some persons within the party leadership to desist from making disparaging statements about the NPP that would give the ruling National Democratic Congress a political advantage as the NPP reorganizes itself for the 2028 elections.

He said; “If you insult someone and later come to talk about unity, for me, that unity is artificially created. Prof. Mike Oquaye’s report says it is our own utterances that the NDC used against us but if you do propaganda and someone comes to reply you, don’t sit on social media to insult the person and later turn around to tell me to be your friend.”

Although Abronye didn’t direct his message to a specific person, Kennedy Agyapong, who took his turn to address the members and supporters at the event, took a swipe at the former, however not mentioning Abronye’s name but showing gestures that pointed to him.

“I am telling you the truth, nobody is a better man than the other but because of this party, some people talk as if they are men. They are not men. When it comes to monetary contributions, they cannot partake in it. They have to go and beg and they talk as if the whole world is for them. If not for the sake of unity, some of them cannot even speak the way they speak because you are even shy coming to my house”, Kennedy furiously replied.

The former presidential aspirant warned Abronye and his likes to watch their tongue.

He stated; “With some, we buy cars for them and they will come out to do ‘too known’…I will respect you but I won’t respond to some people or else you would see a showdown…I have money; I don’t beg. Even you, poor people, think you can talk boldly, how about rich men like me? Please! Who born dog for you to talk anyhow?”

‘Where is Dad?’ Sunny Ade’s children battle over music icon’s whereabouts, well-being

0

Some children of the legendary juju musician, Sunday Adegeye, aka King Sunny Ade, are currently at loggerheads over his well-being and whereabouts.

A daughter of the singer and guitarist, Damilola Esther, took to social media to accuse her step-brother, Dayo, of holding their father hostage, and also booking him for events without honouring the engagements.

In a series of social media posts, she also called for her brother, who she referred to as his manager, to be apprehended for “stealing” from KSA.

One of the posts read, “Dad told my brother that he wants to go home. Where is he? Where are his phones? He has not been online or picking his calls. Where is he?”

Another one read, “I want Dayo (manager) apprehended. I want him to provide all the money they have been stealing from him. He has a UK visa, thinking he can run.”

However, in an exclusive interview with Punch Online on Monday, Dayo noted that their father was hale and hearty.

He maintained that he was not the father’s “official manager” but was only helping out his dad in that regard.

He said, “The allegation is false. On Saturday (April 26, 2025), my dad performed at the 60th birthday party of a fan. The event took place at 16, Musa Yar’Adua Street, Victoria Island, Lagos. He still had rehearsals with members of his band last week. He will perform in Akure (Ondo State capital) on May 1.

“She (Damilola) is not in the right frame of mind for her to have made those posts. On Easter Sunday, she called me and said she wanted to speak with dad, because she doesn’t live in Nigeria. I gave the phone to my dad, and they spoke for about 30 minutes. I then told her that if she wanted to see him, she could come to Nigeria.

“The moment she started making nasty comments about dad, she crossed the line. You cannot speak ill of my father and expect me to still reckon with you, no matter who you are. Even my mother wouldn’t do that. Why would you (Damilola) go on social media and call daddy names.”

Dayo also stated that KSA would release a statement to clear the air and put things in perspective.

“Kindly ignore all she has said. KSA will release a statement on social media within 24 hours. And if you are free, you can join him in Akure for his performance on May 1. He will be glad to have an interaction with you, and answer questions on what you have heard on social media about him,” he said.

Clarifying that he was not KSA’s manager but was only “helping out” in the absence of one, Dayo told our correspondent, “I am not an official manager. I just assist my father. I have my businesses. As I explained to her (Damilola), I don’t have any employment letter, and I am not on the payroll.

“I am just helping my dad, like the Scripture commands. This arrangement was not even planned but was necessitated by some developments. He (KSA) asked me to help him handle certain things, pending the time he gets someone in that position. And, he feels extremely comfortable with what I have been doing, and he said I should continue doing it.

“This is like paying him back for all the things he has done for me. One of the things he loves the most is going on stage to perform, and that is what he has been doing for the past 59 years. We cannot just ask him to stop doing that.”

Another son of the iconic musician, David, asserted that Damilola was making things up.

In a separate interview with our correspondent, he said, “As I’m speaking with you, daddy is fine. He is not working under duress. He just finished an event. I can tell you with proof and evidences that he is fine.”

David also noted that he was ready to volunteer more information to prove that their daddy is fine, and there was no cause for alarm.

Cedi gains marginally against dollar as demand pressures wane; one dollar equals GH¢15.96

0

The Ghana cedi gained 0.63% week-on-week versus the US dollar last week as demand pressures waned.

The local currency consequently closed the week at GH¢15.96 to one US dollar. This narrowed its year-to-date loss to 1.74%.

Foreign exchange demand pressures appeared subdued last week as the market remained mostly liquid. The Bank of Ghana offered US$190 million through its daily auctions last week, but only US$84.80 million was absorbed by market participants. This indicated an acceptance ratio of 44.6%.

Additionally, US$65 million traded on the interbank market, boosting liquidity.

This helped the Ghana cedi strengthen by 6.6% vs the US dollar, closing as the best-performing currency on the interbank market among the basket of 15 Sub-Saharan currencies.

It began this week unchanged to the American greenback.

On the outlook for this week, analysts expect the sustained moderation in foreign exchange demand pressures, coupled with timely central bank interventions.

This will further improve market liquidity and provide a respite to the Ghana cedi.

Appiah Adomako writes: Why Ghana must reset its public holidays for productivity and economic growth

0

Appiah Kusi Adomako is the West Africa Regional Director for CUTS International Accra

On Thursday, May 1, 2025, Ghana will once again observe May Day as a statutory public holiday. As is customary, many workers will leave their offices by noon on Wednesday, with some not returning until the following Monday. This pattern, common for holidays falling on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, results in significant productivity losses. These midweek holidays disrupt workflows, as employees often extend their time off by traveling or taking additional unofficial leave, effectively turning a single holiday into a multi-day break. To address this challenge, we should consider realigning our public holidays to fall on Mondays, fostering long weekends that boost both economic activity and worker well-being while minimizing disruptions to productivity.

The Economic Cost of Midweek Holidays

The problem of midweek holidays is not unique to May Day. When holidays like Founder’s Day, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, or Constitutional Day fall on a Tuesday or Thursday, some employees may take the adjacent Monday or Friday off, creating an extended break. For instance, a Tuesday holiday might prompt workers to leave early on Monday or not return until Wednesday, while a Thursday holiday could lead to absences stretching into the following Monday. This behavior, while understandable, reduces productive hours, disrupts business operations, and strains economic output. Public holidays falling midweek can reduce GDP contribution from sectors like manufacturing and services by up to 2% for the affected week, as businesses face lower output and increased absenteeism.

Economic Benefits

Beyond boosting productivity, realigning holidays to Mondays offers social and economic benefits. Long weekends provide workers with opportunities for rest, family time, and travel, improving mental health and work-life balance. Studies from the World Health Organization (WHO) suggest that extended weekends reduce workplace stress and burnout, potentially lowering healthcare costs. Economically, the tourism sector could see significant gains, as Ghanaians are more likely to visit local attractions or hometowns during long weekends. For instance, a 2023 study by the Ghana Tourism Authority found that domestic tourism spending increased by 12% during three-day weekends compared to single-day holidays. This additional revenue could support small businesses and create jobs in rural areas

Learning from Global Practices

Several countries have successfully addressed this issue by scheduling public holidays on Mondays, creating long weekends that benefit both workers and the economy. In the United States, holidays like Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day are fixed on Mondays, ensuring minimal disruption to the workweek. Similarly, Canada observes holidays such as Victoria Day and Canada Day on Mondays when they do not fall on their exact dates. The United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand also adopt this approach for holidays like Bank Holidays and Anzac Day. Research from the OECD shows that long weekends encourage domestic tourism and consumer spending, with countries like Australia seeing a 5-7% increase in retail and hospitality revenue during such periods. For Ghana, aligning holidays with Mondays could stimulate demand in tourism, retail, and transportation sectors, as workers use the extended weekend to travel or engage in leisure activities.

Balancing Tradition and Flexibility

Not all holidays can or should be shifted. Fixed-date holidays tied to cultural, religious, or historical significance—such as New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Adha, Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and Farmers’ Day—must remain on their designated dates to preserve their meaning. However, other holidays, including Constitutional Day, May Day, Republic Day, Founder’s Day, and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, are more flexible and could be realigned to Mondays without losing their significance. For example, Constitutional Day, currently observed on January 7, could be moved to the second Monday in January. May Day could become the first Monday in May, Founder’s Day the first Monday in August, and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day the third Monday in September. Such changes would create predictable long weekends, reducing the likelihood of employees taking additional days off and ensuring a more consistent workweek.

Way forward

To implement this reform, Parliament could amend the Public Holidays (Amendment) Act, 2019 (Act 986) to designate specific Mondays for these movable holidays. The precedent already exists: Farmers’ Day is fixed as the first Friday in December, demonstrating that holidays can be scheduled for consistency. A similar approach could be applied to other holidays, with clear guidelines ensuring that fixed-date holidays remain untouched.

the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture could promote domestic tourism packages tied to these long weekends, maximizing economic impact.

More specialists, senior nurses leave Goaso Municipal Hospital for greener pastures

0

By Christopher Tetteh

Goaso, Ahafo, April 28, GNA-Staff attrition has hit the Goaso Municipal Hospital in the Ahafo Region with 59 specialists and senior nurses leaving the facility for greener pastures abroad, Dr James Ankomah, the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, has said.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Goaso, Dr Ankomah described the situation as worrying and attributed it partly to poor condition of service of workers.

He said the problems of lack of motivation and poor remuneration as well as high cost of residential accommodation ought to be tackled urgently to sustain the interest of the health personnel working in the area.

“Many of the hospital staff and health workers spent a chunk of their meagre salaries on rent and thereby putting pressure on them”, Dr Ankomah stated and called on the government to construct residential accommodation and improve the condition of service of the health workers too.

In a related interview, Dr Akosua Owusu-Sarpong, the Ahafo Regional Director of Health Services, told the GNA that the government could resort to Public Private Partnership agreement to provide residential accommodation for the health workers.

She also appealed for modern medical devices and equipment, especially ventilation machines for the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital, saying the region also required regional medical stores too.

Ghana’s Passport goes Chip-embedded   | Ghana News Agency

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, April 28, GNA – Ghana on Monday began the issuance of Chip-embedded Passports in compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements.

The old biometric passports remain valid until 2030.

However, holders of the old biometric passports can switch to the Chip-embedded Passports any time before 2030 whether their passport has expired or not.

The rollout of the new Chip-embedded passports is a public private partnership between the Government of Ghana and BTS Group.

The official switch from biometric passports to Chip-embedded passports was performed by Mr Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff at the Presidency in Accra.

Mr Debrah, in his address, noted that it required bold leadership to bring about transformation in organizations.

“If you are sent to a place and as I heard everybody talking that this process has been rolling for over 10 years, all it needed to be done was one person to grab the bull by the horn and say I challenge the process let it happen,” he stated.

Mr Debrah, who urged leaders to be innovative, further hailed the collaboration between the Passport Office and the Ghana Post Company for the distribution of the 70,000 uncollected passports to their right owners through courier services.

“I don’t think it’s been written in any manual or book that form a partnership with them so that passports could be delivered to applicants right in the comfort of their home and I thought we should acknowledge that,” he said.

“All my colleagues that have been privileged to serve at various institutions, we should always let common sense prevail. Be very practicable, be very innovative, that is what brings progress to governance.”

Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, said President John Dramani Mahama and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had already received their Chip-embedded passports.

He noted that steps were being taken to ensure that former President John Agyekum Kufuor was issued with one.

“Today is the day Ghana embarks on the most far reaching and progressive passport reforms ever experienced in our country’s entire history”.

“Today we end the frustration, we end the unacceptable waiting period for passports, we end the reign of “goro boys,” we end the phenomenon of over 70,000 uncollected passports which I inherited as Minister.”

Today we Reset and usher in a new era of modernization, convenience and respect for the Ghanaian visa applicant.”

He said the event was a demonstration, in very practical terms, of the first ever mass roll out of the Chip-Embedded Passports and the readiness to implement progressive reforms.

Mr Ablakwa said there had been much talk of Chip-Embedded passports since 2010 when ICAO asked countries to prepare to meet its new requirements consistent with regulations DOC 9303, but this is the first time Ghana was having a mass roll out.

The Minister outlined six major reforms the Ministry was embarking upon, namely switching from the current biometric passports to chip-embedded passports; commencement of 24-Hour Operations at the Passport Head Office; Start direct passport delivery at your convenience through courier service led by Ghana Post and Troskit, activating an E-Tracking System to allow all passport applicants to track their applications from beginning to receiving their passports in the comfort of their homes or offices and pledging to deliver under 15 days for ordinary applications and under five days for expedited applications.

The rest are reducing Application Fee from GHS500 to GHS350, which had been approved by Cabinet and awaiting Parliamentary approval and the roll out of yet another generational passport – marks a significant milestone in the history of Ghana’s document security space.

He also mentioned the dynamic nature and the constant evolution of crimes perpetrated with traveling, security and identity require an even more advanced approach in the design, production and acquisition of these valuable state documents.

Touching of the reduction of passport application fees from GH¢500.00 to GH¢300.00, Mr Ablakwa said in line with the Fees and Charges law, when Parliament resumes, the House would pass a law to approve the new passport application fees, before it could take effect.

Mr Ablakwa said as Ghana roles out its first Chip-embedded Polycarbonate (PC) biographical data-page passport, equipped with the highest latent and patent security inputs, the sector players, end users and regulators within the document security management setup were assured of robust security features that are almost impossible to forge.

He said the use of state-of-the art multi-layer compressed polymer (Polycarbonate) with a minimum lifespan covering the validity period of the passport as a base substrate for the biographical data page guarantees the integrity of the booklet against the conventional document crimes of forgeries and unauthorized falsifications of variable personal data.

Ghana’s U-15 Girls Clinch Historic Win, Boys Claim Bronze at African Schools Football Championship

0

Ghana’s U-15 girls’ team captured the 2025 African Schools Football Championship title with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Uganda at the University of Ghana Stadium on Saturday, April 26.

After a goalless first half, Ghana broke the deadlock when Christiana Ashiaku produced a dazzling solo run, beating her markers before setting up Belinda Kpentey to fire home the opener. Moments later, Daniella Abass doubled the lead with a composed finish, firmly putting Ghana in control.

Uganda pulled one back and pushed hard for an equalizer, but Ghana’s defense held firm to secure a historic triumph for the Black Damsels.

The victory capped a remarkable tournament for the young Ghanaians, who went unbeaten in the group stage with wins over Morocco, Benin, and Malawi before edging defending champions South Africa in a dramatic semifinal.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s U-15 boys’ team captured a historic bronze medal after a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Uganda in the third-place match.

Coached by Kwaku Danso, the young Ghanaians showed tremendous resilience after falling behind to an early Ugandan goal in the first half. Uganda, still reeling from a semifinal defeat to Senegal, capitalized on their early momentum to lead at the break.

However, Ghana emerged with renewed energy after halftime, scoring twice to overturn the deficit and secure a memorable 2-1 win. The spirited performance not only earned Ghana a podium finish but also delivered the country’s first-ever medal in the Boys Division of the African Schools Football Championship.

Members of Divine Healers Church protest against General Overseer’s refusal to resign

Some members of the church Some members of the church

Some aggrieved members of the Divine Healers Church have staged a protest against their long-serving General Overseer, Apostle Isaac Adade.

The demonstration, themed “Save the Divine Healers Church,” was organised by members of the congregation on Sunday, April 28, 2025.

The protesters are calling for Apostle Adade’s resignation after more than 20 years in leadership. They are demanding that he steps aside to allow for new leadership to take over.

A video shared online shows the aggrieved church members holding placards as they voiced their grievances against the current administration.

In June 2024, six pastors of the church filed a motion at the Accra High Court to stop the General Overseer and four other principal officers from staying in office.

They argued that Apostle Isaac Kwabena Adade and five other officers had refused to retire, despite having reached the retirement age of 65 as stipulated by the church’s constitution.

Thank You Tour: Bawumia speaking from ‘Collective Standpoint’

0

Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has dismissed claims that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is attempting to distance himself from the previous government’s failings during the party’s ongoing Thank You Tour.

The remarks come amid scrutiny of Bawumia’s public statements on the tour, with critics suggesting he may be trying to avoid accountability for the NPP administration’s perceived shortcomings.

Responding to the growing speculation that the NPP flagbearer is separating himself from the government’s record, Ahiagbah clarified that Bawumia’s tone and messaging should be viewed as inclusive and representative of a shared legacy.

“I don’t think he is distancing himself. It’s a way of speaking…If you listen to him, you’ll realise he is speaking from a collective standpoint,” Ahiagbah said on Channel One’s Newsroom on Monday, April 28.

He emphasised that Bawumia remains committed to the administration’s decisions and direction, having played a central role in governance.

“There is no way Dr. Bawumia will distance himself because we are all together in that decision. If he made any attempts to distance himself, perhaps I would ask questions myself,” he added.

Ahiagbah also questioned the logic behind any political advantage gained from distancing oneself, stressing that Bawumia’s messaging is grounded in unity, responsibility, and a forward-looking vision.

“What benefit would that bring to anybody to want to distance himself from collective efforts?” he asked.

Galamsey: L.I 2462 must be completely repealed

0

Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Hub Corporation, Dr. Anthony Aubynn, has called for the complete repeal of Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which regulates aspects of small-scale mining in Ghana.

Speaking in an interview with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday, April 28, Dr. Aubynn argued that the regulation should be scrapped and replaced with a new legal framework better suited to protecting the environment and effectively regulating the sector.

He stated that the government is making progress in tackling the issue of galamsey, cautioning that it would be unfair to judge its efforts after just four months in office.

“I think the government is on course in the area of small-scale mining, even if you think that it has not been as fast as you expect. This problem has been age-old. It’s been here for a very long time, so four months is certainly too short a period for you to say that it [Mahama government] succeeded in addressing the challenge or not,” he said.

Dr. Aubynn voiced strong support for the repeal of LI 2462, criticising the law for allowing mining activities within forest reserves.

“The LI 2462, I support the idea that it should be repealed. It should be completely repealed, and maybe a new law brought in. But if you read the law very carefully and compare it with the policy that existed before then, the danger associated with that law is the fact that it allows the minister to allow for mining in the forests,” he explained.

He further noted that earlier policies did not entirely ban mining in forest areas but made it a highly restricted and difficult process.

“In the old policies, it didn’t completely ban mining in the forests, but it made it such a difficult enterprise. There were only a few companies that had the concessions to mine in the forests,” he added.

The L.I. 2462, titled Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations, was passed in November 2022.

“Who born dog!” Angry Kennedy Agyapong clashes with “ohiani” Abronye

0

Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, clashed with New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, at Berekum in the Bono Region during Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s national thank-you tour on Monday.

The former Vice President’s tour reached the Bono Region on Monday, where Abronye is Regional Chairman, and the meeting was nearly ruined following a verbal clash between Agyapong and Abronye.

As regional chairman, Abronye was the first to speak, and in his welcome address, he fired salvos that Kennedy Agyapong later interpreted as being targeted at him.

The Bono Regional Chairman questioned the sincerity of persons preaching unity in the NPP, when, in his view, the same people had earlier sown seeds of discord within the party with their utterances, which, he said, the NDC used to campaign against the NPP during the elections, quoting the Prof Mike Ocquaye post election fact-finding committee.

Abronye also rejected a proposal by Kennedy Agyapong that the party should grant amnesty to all former members who had left the party as well as those on suspension.

Abronye was of the view that granting such amnesty to people who had been punished by the party for misconduct would be a clear endorsement and promotion of indiscipline.

This party needs discipline and I do not support such a proposal, he said.

Abronye said that those pushing for such amnesty and unity had, in the lead up to the election, attacked the party publicly and contributed to its defeat.

Kennedy Agyapong was obviously not happy, and he fired his own salvos at Abronye when he got to his turn to speak.

He angrily warned that he could not be intimidated, and responded to Abronye with a mixture of insinuations and direct attacks.

Some people talk as if they own the party, but they don’t. If we are seeking real men in the party, they don’t measure up. Their financial contribution is minimal. They go around begging yet they have mouths to talk. Even you poor people want to speak your mind, how much more rich men like us. Who born dog! an angry Kennedy Agyapong said.

Still responding, Kennedy Agyapong also attacked Abronye’s record as Regional Chairman of the party, pointing out that the NPP had only one parliamentary seat in the region.

Earlier, Abronye had defended his record as Regional Chairman, as well as the records of his constituency executives, insisting that although the region voted massively for the NPP in 2016 and 2020, the NPP government neglected the region, as several calls for key projects like roads to be prioritised fell on deaf ears from 2017 to 2024.

Nadowli/Kaleo DCE nominee rejected by assembly members

0

The President’s nominee for the District Chief Executive (DCE) position in the Nadowli/Kaleo District, Mary Mumuni, has been rejected by assembly members after a crucial confirmation vote held on Monday, April 28.

Mary Mumuni, who currently serves as the Women’s Organiser for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the district, garnered 24 “yes” votes against 28 “no” votes, falling short of the required two-thirds majority needed for approval.

Her rejection makes her the second DCE nominee to be turned down in the Upper West Region during this latest round of confirmations. On April 17, 2025, Shaibu Adamu, the president’s nominee for the Wa East District, also failed to secure enough votes to be confirmed.

The outcome of the Nadowli/Kaleo confirmation process leaves the district without a substantive DCE, pending further action by the President.

According to established procedures, the President may choose to renominate the same individuals for a second attempt or select new candidates to undergo the assembly’s voting process again.

Despite the setbacks in Nadowli/Kaleo and Wa East, the confirmation exercise across the Upper West Region has largely been successful.

Nine out of the eleven Municipal and District Assemblies have so far approved their respective Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) nominees.

The people of Nadowli/Kaleo and Wa East will now have to wait for further directives from the Presidency, as the local governance structures in those districts remain incomplete.

CDS hosts two Two-Star Generals in valedictory speech

0

The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Major General William Agyapong hosted a gathering of all Two-Star Generals in the Ghana Armed Forces at his office in Burma Camp on Monday, 28 April, 2025.

During the meeting, the CDS expressed his heartfelt appreciation and admiration for the Generals’ exceptional professionalism and dedicated service to the country.

He extended gratitude from the President and Commander-in-Chief, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to the Ghana Armed Forces.

He then informed the Generals that, to aid command and control in the Armed Forces, many of them present are to be released honourably from the service in accordance with Ghana Armed Forces regulations.

The Commandant, National College of Defence Studies, Major General Irvine Aryeetey, on behalf of the Generals present opined that, the current change in Military High Command Structure was nothing new but  consistent with the history of the Ghana Armed Forces.

He also posited that, as tradition demands, new intakes take over from their predecessors.

He cited the handing over from the then CDS, Lt Gen OB Akwa to Vice Admiral S Amoama which was 5 intakes down the line (Intake 18 and 23).

Again, in the case of CDS Vice Admiral S. Amoama as he then was and General T Oppong-Peprah, it was 3 intakes down the line (Intakes 23 and 26).

He concluded that, the current change in command between the immediate past CDS, General T. Oppong-Peprah and the current CDS, Major General W Agyapong, which is 4 intakes down the line was consistent with the military tradition.

He however, expressed gratitude to the CDS for inviting them to formally inform and honour them, which was a novelty.

The meeting concluded with a luncheon hosted by the CDS at his office, where he wished the Generals well  in their future endeavours.

Also present at the meeting were the Service Chiefs and the Chief of Staff, General Headquarters.

‘Let common sense prevail’ – Julius Debrah to government appointees

0

Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has urged government appointees to be innovative and practical in their roles.

Speaking at the launch of the chip-embedded passport on Monday, April 28, 2025, he stressed the importance of these qualities in driving progress in governance.

“The last thing I want to talk about to my colleagues who have been privileged to serve in various institutions is that you should always let common sense prevail. Be practical, be innovative. That is what brings progress to governance,” he noted.

His comments come on the back of President John Dramani Mahama’s recent address to ministerial appointees, where he emphasised that performance, not presence, will be the standard by which they are judged.

Speaking at the opening of a four-day Executive Leadership Program for Ministerial Appointees on Thursday, April 24, 2025, he reminded participants that their responsibilities are rooted in public trust.

“You were not appointed to occupy space. You were appointed to solve problems; the Ghanaian people expect us to deliver. And we must not with excuses, but with results'” he added.

PPP backs Mahama’s suspension of CJ, urges respect for due process

0

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has expressed strong support for the President’s suspension of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, describing the action as lawful and consistent with the 1992 Constitution.

In a statement issued on Monday, April 28, and signed by the party’s Chairman, Nana Ofori Owusu, the PPP emphasised that the President acted within constitutional bounds by suspending the Chief Justice following the establishment of a prima facie case and in consultation with the Council of State.

“We wish to reiterate our firm belief that the suspension, as executed by the President, was lawful and in full compliance with due process,” the statement read.

The party noted that the Chief Justice was given an opportunity to respond to the allegations against her, and that the procedure followed highlights the President’s adherence to rule of law and respect for fundamental human rights.

While affirming the supremacy of the Constitution, the PPP cautioned against efforts to politicize or undermine the process.

The party also took aim at the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) for what it described as a confusing call to suspend the Chief Justice’s suspension, saying such a move contradicts constitutional order.

“The GBA’s stance could be interpreted as an attempt to suspend due process itself,” the party asserted, warning that such calls threaten democratic accountability and imply selective application of the law.

The PPP stressed that no individual or officeholder, including the Chief Justice, is above the Constitution, and that the principle of accountability must remain central to Ghana’s democracy.

Citing the 2018 removal of the Electoral Commission Chairperson, the party reminded the public that similar processes were upheld by the Supreme Court when due process was followed.

The statement concluded by urging all stakeholders to remain calm and allow constitutional procedures to unfold without obstruction.

Focus on party unity, not tours — Dr. Asah-Asante tells NPP

0

Political Analyst Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante has strongly criticised the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, over the party’s ongoing nationwide ‘Thank You Tour’ following its 2024 electoral defeat.

Speaking in an interview with Selorm Adonoo on Monday, April 28, Dr. Asah-Asante argued that the party’s priority should be addressing internal grievances and fostering unity, rather than embarking on public tours.

According to Dr. Asah-Asante, many NPP supporters remain disgruntled following the party primaries and subsequent electoral loss, and the leadership must focus on reconciling with those aggrieved members.

He noted that unresolved issues of disaffection continue to threaten the party’s cohesion.

He cited lingering resentment among figures such as Amoako Baah and others, who, he said, feel sidelined for legitimate reasons, stressing the need for the party to actively reach out and reconcile with them, including former National Chairman Paul Afoko.

“I support that view, because I’ve said that that exercise is a bogus one. Because you have problems that continue to linger within the frontiers of the party.

“Issues of disaffection relative to the primaries that were organised. There were people who were hurt, disenchanted—have they reconciled them? And you’re going on a tour. There are people like Amoako Baah and co who are very bitter for very good reasons.

“You need to sit down, talk about it, and deal with those issues and bring them into the fold. The people that you jettisoned some years ago—Afoko and the likes. The game of politics is a game of numbers; so every soul counts, every vote is important,” he advised.

Dr. Asah-Asante reiterated that healing internal wounds must be the NPP’s immediate focus if it hopes to rebuild ahead of future elections.

Ghana more dependent today previously – Ofosu-Dorte

0

Founder and Senior Partner at AB and David Africa, David Ofosu-Dorte, has said that Ghana is more dependent today than it was before gaining independence, raising deep concerns about the country’s mindset, productivity, and political culture.

Speaking at the JoyNews and Amalgam of Professional Bodies Speaker Series, Mr Ofosu-Dorte traced the roots of Ghana’s deep-seated disempowerment to a historical lineage of chieftaincy, slavery, and colonisation.

According to him, these experiences have left an indelible mark on the national psyche, affecting generations and creating a society that struggles with true autonomy.

He challenged the traditional interpretation of Ghana’s independence, arguing that the nation never truly achieved full independence but rather transitioned into self-rule without dismantling the systems of dependency.

“So far as I’m concerned, we were never a dependent nation in the true sense,” he noted. “Dependence means being entirely reliant on others. What we attained was self-rule, but ironically, it appears we are more dependent today than we were previously.”

He lamented that over the years, post-colonial leadership — whether civilian or military — and now multi-party democracy, have worsened this culture of dependence. Citizens increasingly expect politicians to be the sole agents of national transformation, a mindset he says has led to political sycophancy and worsened national disempowerment.

“Unfortunately, multi-party democracy, which was supposed to liberate us, has led to a situation where citizens align with parties primarily for personal gain, deepening the worship of leaders even more,” he said.

Drawing on examples from global history, Ofosu-Dorte compared Ghana’s lack of bold, transformational projects today to the ambitious national efforts of the 1960s, such as Russia’s launch of Sputnik One, America’s moon landing, and China’s aggressive modernization under its “996” work culture. He emphasized the urgent need for Ghana to reignite a spirit of ambition and hard work.

“In a country with very low productivity, increasing productivity through various means is essential,” he added. “If we don’t rebuild a confident, hardworking society, the transformative change we hope for will remain elusive.”

GCB MD supports construction of new Gbewaa Palace with 2,000 bags of cement

0

The Managing Director of Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB), Alhaji Alhassan Farihan, has donated 2,000 bags of cement to support the construction of the New Gbewaa Palace in the Dagbon Kingdom.

The Dagbon Kingdom, one of Africa’s oldest and richest cultural entities, is currently building an ultra-modern palace to better reflect its heritage and prestige.

The current Gbewaa Palace, where the Yaa Naa—the king of Dagbon—resides, has been deemed inadequate for the kingdom’s stature, prompting calls for a new, befitting edifice.

As a proud son of Dagbon, Alhaji Farihan said it is the responsibility of all natives to help preserve and promote the kingdom’s esteemed legacy.

Presenting the donation receipts to the palace committee on Monday, April 28, he reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the successful completion of the project.

He also called on all sons, daughters, and well-wishers of Dagbon to contribute towards the initiative.

The Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II, expressed his heartfelt appreciation to Alhaji Farihan for his generous support, underscoring the cultural and historical importance of the project.

Following a tour of the construction site, Alhaji Farihan expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done so far and pledged to continue supporting the project.

Public Relations Officer for the Gbewaa Palace, Musah Yakubu, also conveyed gratitude to the GCB Managing Director, expressing optimism that the donation would significantly boost progress on the project. He further appealed to other benevolent organisations and individuals to come on board and support the noble cause.

The new Gbewaa Palace, upon completion, will serve as a unified seat for all future Yaa Naas, regardless of lineage, strengthening the unity and heritage of Dagbon.

Ntim Fordjour wins GHS700K in defamation case

0

The Cape Coast High Court has ruled in favour of the Assin South MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, in a defamation suit he brought against Stephen Cobbah, also known as Adepa, and Yaw Korankye, also known as Ampong.

Rev. Fordjour had sued the two defendants over defamatory statements made on the “Assinman Politics Gh.” WhatsApp platform in March 2024. In his claim, he sought a declaration that the statements were defamatory, damages of GHS 1 million, a perpetual injunction, a retraction and apology from the defendants, as well as costs.

Delivering judgment on Monday, April 28, 2025, the court declared that the words published by the defendants were indeed defamatory. It awarded damages of GHS 700,000 against the defendants jointly and severally, and imposed a cost of GHS 20,000 on each defendant.

The court further issued a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from publishing any further defamatory statements against Rev. Fordjour. It also ordered the defendants to retract their defamatory statements with the same prominence with which they were published and to render an unqualified written apology to Rev. Fordjour.

The apologies are to be published on the “Assinman Politics Gh.” WhatsApp platform and any other platforms where the defamatory statements had been circulated.

The judgment brings closure to a case that underscores the increasing scrutiny and legal consequences surrounding the use of social media platforms for political commentary.

OSP files 15 corruption-related charges against Charles Bissue

0

Charles Bissue and Kissi Agyebeng Charles Bissue and Kissi Agyebeng

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has charged former Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), Charles Bissue; and Andy Thomas Owusu with 15 counts of corruption-related offences.

The charges filed at the High Court (Criminal Division) in Accra on April 28, 2025, allege that between January and February 2019, while serving as IMCIM Secretary, Charles Bissue allegedly accepted a total of GH¢35,000 from one Benjamin Adjapong, directly and through Owusu, to fast-track the renewal of an expired mining license for ORR Resources Enterprise.

According to court documents sighted by GhanaWeb on Monday, April 28, 2025, Charles Bissue faces nine counts, including Using Public Office for Profit under Section 179C(a) of Act 29 for receiving GH¢15,000 on January 22, GH¢10,000 on January 30, and another GH¢10,000 on February 8 to bypass IMCIM vetting processes.

He is also charged with Corruption by a Public Officer under Sections 239(1) and (3) of Act 29 (as amended by Act 1034) for accepting bribes to influence official duties.

Andy Owusu faces six counts, including aiding Bissue under Section 179C(b) for acting as a middleman to facilitate payments, as well as Corruption of a Public Officer and Accepting Bribes to Influence Bissue under Sections 239(2) and 252(1).

These charges relate to GH¢5,000 payouts he allegedly received in Kumasi for falsely claiming he could secure favours from Bissue.

The OSP’s investigation also revealed that Andy Owusu, in a sting operation by Tiger Eye PI, allegedly negotiated a GH¢100,000 bribe (later reduced to GH¢40,000 each) with Adjapong, who posed as a representative of ORR Resources.

Charles Bissue allegedly received GH¢35,000, while Andy Owusu also took GH¢15,000, allegedly according to the prosecution.

Background

The IMCIM, which was established in 2017 to combat illegal mining (galamsey), was dissolved in 2021 following corruption scandals, including Bissue’s alleged involvement in the misappropriation of excavators and gold nuggets.

In November 2024, the Human Rights Court dismissed the final in a series of suits filed by Charles Bissue aimed at preventing the Office of the Special Prosecutor from arresting, investigating, or charging him.

Charles Bissue had previously obtained a 10-day ex parte injunction restraining the OSP from arresting him, alleging that the warrant issued was unlawfully procured and intended to harass him.

He also sought a declaration that a notice marking him as wanted was void.

In its judgment, the Court found Bissue’s claims entirely unfounded, stating there was no evidence to support his allegations. The central question was whether an arrest warrant had indeed been issued by the Kaneshie District Court for the OSP against Bissue.

The court ruled that it was Bissue’s responsibility to provide proof of such a warrant, which he failed to do.

The judge added that no warrant had been issued, and dismissed the claim as a figment of the imagination of Bissue, awarding costs of GH¢10,000 against him.

RSOOs and RAIOs need stronger collaboration for growth

0

Acting AIB Commissioner, John M.K. Wumborti (2nd left) with other aviation leaders at the workshop Acting AIB Commissioner, John M.K. Wumborti (2nd left) with other aviation leaders at the workshop

At the ongoing RSOOs-RAIO Validation Workshop in Kampala, Uganda, aviation safety stakeholders from across Africa emphasised that stronger collaboration remains essential for the growth and sustainability of Regional Safety Oversight Organizations (RSOOs) and Regional Accident and Incident Investigation Organizations (RAIOs).

In his presentation, Farid Zizu, Representative of France Aviation Civil Services (FACS), underscored that active cooperation is the cornerstone of creating added value for member states.

Delivering a paper titled “AFI RSOO: Creating Added Value to Member States,” Zizu identified trust, a positive dynamic, and clearly defined value-added activities as key factors in enhancing the effectiveness of RSOOs.

He stressed that member states must perceive tangible benefits from their investments, backed by strong credibility, transparency, and accountability to reinforce confidence in regional oversight bodies.

Zizu urged RSOOs to develop initiatives such as joint audits, cooperative safety oversight, and joint inspections, which would substantially ease the workload of national civil aviation authorities.

Meanwhile, addressing participants, Colonel Lawrence Jarra, Commissioner of the Accident Investigation Board (AIB) Gambia, highlighted the critical role of RAIOs in strengthening aviation safety.

Jarra noted that Africa currently operates only one fully functional RAIO, the Banjul Accord Group Accident Investigation Agency (BAGAIA) and emphasised the urgent need for stronger regional accident investigation frameworks across the continent.

He called for greater investment in RAIOs to deliver timely safety recommendations and effectively support the aviation industry’s growth, warning that fragmented oversight could undermine regional safety progress.

The workshop also welcomed participation from key aviation leaders, including John M.K. Wumborti, Commissioner for the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB), Ghana.

Wumborti’s involvement underscored Ghana’s ongoing commitment to advancing regional cooperation in aviation safety oversight and accident investigation efforts.

As discussions continued, Farid Zizu reiterated the importance of empowering RSOOs to indirectly bolster RAIOs, thereby minimizing incident backlogs and avoiding duplication of efforts.

Stakeholders concluded that sustainable growth for both RSOOs and RAIOs requires more than financial support, it demands building trust, ensuring transparency, and maintaining strong regional commitment.

The Kampala workshop continues to lay a strong foundation for improved collaboration among African aviation safety bodies, as participants work toward a safer and more integrated air transport system across the continent.

Liverpool Are Premier League Champions

0

Liverpool have been crowned Premier League champions, equaling Manchester United’s record of 20 top-flight titles. The Reds clinched the title in style at a jubilant Anfield with a thumping 5-1 win over Tottenham.

Arne Slot’s side have led from the front in the Dutchman’s first season in England, losing just twice in 34 games to win the league and end Manchester City’s unprecedented four-year grip on the title.

Few backed Liverpool to compete for top spot after Jurgen Klopp’s departure a year ago, but Slot has defied all expectations and already matched his predecessor’s league-title haul.

Liverpool won their first title for five years at a canter too, with City dropping off this season, while Arsenal failed to keep up after being blighted by injuries and are set to be runners-up for the third year running.

The newly-crowned champions can still surpass City’s 91-point tally from last season, which would put them in esteemed company. Only 14 teams, including Liverpool on three occasions under Klopp, have hit 90 points in the Premier League era.

Transformation mindset needed to better-develop Ghana – Ofosu-Dorte

0

Legal expert Dr. David Ofosu-Dorte has issued a compelling call for a fundamental shift in Ghana’s collective thinking to drive meaningful economic transformation.

The Senior Partner at AB & David Africa, in his address titled “Transforming Ghana’s Economy – Time For A Mindset Revolution,” challenged all sectors of society to move beyond complacency.

Speaking at the JoyNews & Amalgam of Professional Bodies Speaker Series, Dr. Ofosu-Dorte explained that Ghana’s transformation requires more than just political leadership.

“The segments of society that need to have a transformation mindset extend far beyond our political leaders,” he stated.

He particularly called out business leaders for often celebrating minor achievements while engaging in exclusionary practices through political connections, rather than fostering broader industry growth.

The legal luminary identified several critical areas needing urgent attention, beginning with business leaders who must transition from self-interest to collaborative nation-building.

Think-tanks, he argued, should evolve from theoretical analysis to developing practical, actionable solutions.

“Business leaders in this country tend to like to glorify themselves over small achievements. Much worse, when they are even leading associations, very often, they are in a hurry to exclude the others by liaising with political leaders to get something for themselves and forget the others.”

State-Owned Enterprises were urged to replace bureaucratic inertia with national development priorities, while media practitioners were challenged to shift from sensationalism to developmental journalism. Most importantly, Dr. Ofosu-Dorte stressed the need for citizens to embrace entrepreneurial thinking over dependency.

“Think-tanks need to also have a transformation mindset. SOEs need to have a transformation mindset.”

Drawing inspiration from Asia’s economic success stories, the speaker highlighted how China and Singapore deliberately cultivated entrepreneurial cultures through coordinated national policies.

“In Ghana, our entrepreneurship initiatives remain fragmented, led by NGOs rather than being a systematic, government-driven national crusade,” he observed, calling for a more structured approach to fostering business innovation.

Dr. Ofosu-Dorte proposed a comprehensive transformation framework with a challenge to all Ghanaians that “True transformation begins when we stop waiting for government solutions and start demanding excellence from ourselves and our institutions.”

“The Singapore miracle wasn’t accidental – it resulted from deliberate national decisions we must learn from.”

Admit your failures and stop shifting blames

0

Political Analyst Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante has criticised the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, over his explanation for the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, urging him to openly admit its failures rather than shift blame.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, April 28, 2025, Dr. Asah-Asante advised the former Vice President to be bold, acknowledge where the party faltered, and move forward with integrity, warning that shifting blame would only harm the NPP.

“All that they have to do is that they should be bold and say that we got it wrong, we failed here, and then we proceed on the route of integrity, but once you begin to pass back, you begin to apportion blame towards some people then obviously you are running away from the truth.

“But remember that in politics there is a day of reckoning, and that day of reckoning is when you come face to face with the reality,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia had earlier attributed the NPP’s loss to factors such as the arrogance of power, the high cost of living, the failure to reshuffle government officials, the introduction of the E-Levy, and the controversial haircut policy.

However, Dr. Asah-Asante challenged the validity of the methods used in compiling the party’s post-election report, questioning whether it genuinely reflected the regional and constituency-specific issues that influenced voter behaviour.

“I want to see the instrument that they used to collect the data. If the instrument did not try to elicit responses privileged to regional-specific issues and constituency-specific issues, then I have a problem with the instrument that they used. Because in election surveys, we have national issues, and beyond that, we have regional, constituency issues,” he stressed.

Dr. Asah-Asante warned that unless the NPP confronts its shortcomings directly, its chances of recovery would remain slim.

“They have a lot to do, but this whole approach will not help them. They need to sit down and look at the report and see how they can deal with the report,” he concluded.

Barcelona Beat Real Madrid In Extra-Time Thriller To Win Copa del Rey

0

Jules Kounde scored a stunning extra-time winner as Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 3-2 to claim the Copa del Rey in a dramatic Clasico final in Seville.

Barcelona dominated early and took the lead through Pedri’s brilliant first-time strike from outside the box after a cut-back by Lamine Yamal. Real Madrid improved after Kylian Mbappe came off the bench, curling in a free-kick to equalise before Aurelien Tchouameni headed them in front.

Barcelona fought back, with Ferran Torres capitalizing on a long ball from Yamal to round Thibaut Courtois and make it 2-2. Barca thought they had won a penalty in injury time, but VAR overturned the decision.

In extra time, Kounde seized his moment, collecting the ball 22 yards out and firing a low shot into the bottom corner to secure the trophy.

The final ended on a chaotic note, with Real Madrid’s Antonio Rudiger and Lucas Vazquez sent off from the bench, and Jude Bellingham dismissed after the final whistle for confronting the referee.

IMF: Ghana can payback debts

0

By Francis Ntow

Washington, DC (USA), April 28, GNA – Ghana can payback its debts when they fall due, once it keeps to the implementation of objectives of the US$3 billion loan-supported programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Those were the words of Mr. Stéphane Roudet, IMF Mission Chief for Ghana, in a roundtable discussion with some Ghanaian journalists at the just ended spring meetings of the IMF and the World Bank Group, in Washington, DC, USA.

“Once we go to the Board, we publish the staff report, [and] you will see that the macroeconomic framework that we have in there assumes that those payables are going to be repaid at some point,” Mr. Roudet said.

He was quick to add: “the pace at which the government will be able to pay down those payables will very much depend on their ability to raise the necessary financing.”

He stated for example that the government in the 2025 budget had made provisions for repayment of arrears below the line of GHS13 billion as part of efforts to meet the country’s debt obligations.

Mr. Roudet was responding to a question posed by the Ghana News Agency on the capability of the government to meet its payables on the back of a large accumulation in 2024.

“The magnitude of the problem is quite large. Our assessment is that the primary balance last year on a commitment basis was a deficit of about three and a quarter per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP),” he said.

That compared to a surplus of half a per cent of GDP under the ongoing IMF programme target, he said, noting that the staff mission discussed with the Ghanaian authorities, short-term interventions to put the country’s fiscals back on track.

“What we have seen from that standpoint is a strong budget that continues to stick to the programme objectives and in particular for this year it’s a primary surplus of one and a half percent of GDP. It’s underpinned by strong efforts on the spending side but also on the revenue side,” he stated.

He said the Fund had observed the implementation of some fiscal reforms already, including an amendment to the Procurement Act.

The changes to the Act made it necessary for the Ministry of Finance to issue commencement authorisation before a public procurement agency could grant a permit for procurement, irrespective of the mode.

“That puts the Ministry of Finance and the institution that holds the purse of the country very much at the centre of the project implementation process,” the IMF Mission Chief for Ghana said.

He said the mission staff and the Ghanaian authorities also discussed some important measures to tackle the structural challenges of the country, such as the Fiscal Framework and Fiscal Council.

Those reforms, when implemented effectively, he said would bolster the country’s fiscals, positioning it better to meet its debt obligations.

Ghana has been implementing a three-year -US$3bn Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme with the IMF since 2023 – the country’s 17th loan-supported package with the Bretton Woods institution.

The programme was aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability for economic resilience and lay the foundation for stronger and more inclusive growth.

It started with the erstwhile President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufu-Addo administration and had since been taken over by the new government led by President John Dramani Mahama, and expected to end in 2026.

President John Dramani Mahama has urged the youth, particularly those from mining communities, to embrace a new path toward entrepreneurship and economic empowerment through the Adwumawura Program.

Speaking at the launch on Monday, April 28, 2025, he announced that the program would prioritise youth involved in illegal mining activities, popularly referred to as galamsey.

“For youth who come from mining communities and were involved in galamsey, we want to shift you away from illegal mining. We will prioritise you to set up your own businesses, creating jobs and shaping a sustainable future,” he declared.

President Mahama further indicated that the program is designed to equip the youth to become entrepreneurs.

“My young brothers and sisters, the big businesses of today were once the startups and micro-enterprises of yesterday. We are not all born to be employees; we can also be employers, innovators, and community builders,” he stated.

“If you have been searching for the opportunity to launch or grow a business, the Adwumawura Program is your answer. Embrace it, own it, build your dreams, and through them, build a better Ghana,” he added.

The National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program (NEIP), operating under the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment, will oversee the implementation of the program.
