How ‘pained’ Liverpool fans reacted to Trent’s free departure

Alexander-Arnold has faced backlash for departing Liverpool for free Alexander-Arnold has faced backlash for departing Liverpool for free

Some aggrieved Liverpool fans have resorted to expressing their displeasure on social media following the departure of defender Trent Alexander-Arnold from the club at the end of the 2024/2025 season.

On May 5, 2025, Arnold explained that his decision to leave the club was taken after thorough reflection on his career, as it would help him change environments and compete at a different level to bring out the best in himself.

The Liverpool defender noted that he has been with the team since childhood and has won most of the trophies in his career; however, he believes it is time for him to move on, even though it won’t sit well with most of the fans.

Indeed, some supporters of the ‘Reds’ were angry with the player for leaving his boyhood club without earning any fee to compensate for his loss and aid the team’s finances.

Others, who were absolutely furious, burned Trent’s jersey, took a video, and shared it on social media to showcase their annoyance with the player’s departure.

There were those who expressed their disappointment in the right-back for leaving the club on a free transfer and possibly joining their European rivals, Real Madrid if a deal is sealed.

Arnold played 352 games, scored 23 goals, and made 92 assists during his spell at Liverpool.

He also won eight titles with the club, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.

Kasese NRM registrar arrested over 15 missing voter registers

Moris Kitenge is currently detained at Ibanda–Kyanya Police Station Moris Kitenge is currently detained at Ibanda–Kyanya Police Station

Police in Rwenzori East Region on Tuesday morning arrested the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Registrar for Ibanda–Kyanya Town Council in Busongora County North, following the disappearance of 15 party registers containing names of voters meant to participate in the ongoing village chairperson elections.

Mr Moris Kitenge is currently detained at Ibanda–Kyanya Police Station as investigations into the case continues. He is expected to be arraigned in court once police complete their inquiries.

According to preliminary reports, NRM party officials who were deployed to supervise elections in various villages raised alarm after waiting in vain for Mr Kitenge to distribute the voter registers. When they went to his location to collect the documents themselves, they reportedly found nothing, prompting them to call in police.

Rwenzori East Region Police Spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, said Mr Kitenge is accused of tampering with the election process and allegedly causing the loss of 15 NRM party Registers.

“It is alleged that the Registrar tampered with the register book, which led to the disappearance of the documents. That prompted police to swing into action and arrest him,” SP Tumushime said.

He added that police are currently making efforts to recover the missing registers to allow the affected villages to participate in the electoral exercise. “We are trying to recover the missing registers so that the affected villages also participate in the exercise, I appeal to the public to coordinate with security in case of any electoral abnormalities.” He said.

He further urged voters not to panic over the presence of security agencies during the voting exercise.

“We ask voters to stay calm, participate freely, and have no fear in case they see police in their respective areas. It is our role to ensure law and order is maintained,” he added.

Tumushime also encouraged the public to work closely with all security organs, including the Uganda Police Force, Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), and the Office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), to ensure a peaceful and transparent election.

The incident has sparked concern among voters in the affected villages, leaving party members in the area stranded

Africa Institute on Governance and Security commends Mahama’s Code of Conduct for public officers

0

In a statement issued on Monday, May 5, 2025, Executive Director of the Institute, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, who was Government’s spokesperson on Governance and Security under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration said “this visionary initiative underscores Ghana’s commitment to fostering transparency, integrity, and good governance, which are critical pillars for sustainable development and public trust.”

Declare Assets Tomorrow Or Dismissal – Mahama To Appointees

0

President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has warned that any of his appointees who fail to declare their assets by the end of Wednesday, May 7, 2025, will be sacked.

The President made the declaration during the launch of a new Code of Conduct for Public Servants in Accra yesterday.

Addressing the issue of accountability and transparency in governance, President Mahama said he would not tolerate any breach of constitutional obligations related to asset declaration.

“If by close of day, Wednesday, May 7, 2025, any of you still fails to declare your assets, count yourself automatically dismissed,” President Mahama warned, and added, “When it comes to protecting the integrity of this government, I will not compromise.”

The President’s comments come after the Auditor-General reported that several officials had failed to comply with the asset declaration deadline he set earlier this year.

On February 18, 2025, President Mahama directed all appointees—both newly nominated and those already in office—to declare their assets by March 31, 2025.

“An update provided by the Auditor-General to my office indicates that some of you failed to meet that deadline,” the President noted.

He continued, “For all those who were appointed or nominated before 31st March 2025 and failed to meet the deadline, you are forfeiting three months of salary to be donated to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund named after me, Mahama Cares.”

“In addition to one month’s salary, I have asked all appointees to donate to the Mahama Cares Trust Fund. So it means that those who omitted to declare their assets by the date, you are paying four months’ salary to Mahama Cares,” he said.

The punitive action has already taken effect for those who defaulted on the March 31 deadline, according to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.

“President Mahama sanctions appointees who defaulted on asset declaration by 31st March,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu posted on social media earlier in the day.

“They are to forfeit four months’ salary and donate the same to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund. All defaulters have up to close of day tomorrow to declare their assets or they stand automatically dismissed,” he added.

During his remarks, President Mahama also emphasised that public office was a trust and not a privilege to be abused.

The Code of Conduct for Public Servants, launched at the same event, outlines clear ethical expectations for all government officials, including financial disclosure, avoidance of conflicts of interest, and adherence to procurement regulations.

The way you folded the petition, are you sure you sent it your boss? — Dzifa Gunu asks Stan Dogbe

0

Dzifa Gunu, Acting CEO of Ghana Digital Centres Limited, has raised concerns to Deputy Chief of Staff Stan Dogbe regarding whether he successfully delivered the petition submitted by a coalition of political parties to President John Dramani Mahama following the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration on May 5, 2025.

In a post on social media that same day, Gunu humorously expressed skepticism about the petition’s delivery, pointing out how Dogbe had folded it in his hands.

She questioned whether the petition had actually reached its intended recipient, asking, “But Efo Stan Xoese Dogbe, the way you folded the petition, are you sure you sent it to your boss?”

A coalition of political parties had organized the protest in response to the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo and the mass dismissal of public service officials.

The group, led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and including the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), and the People’s National Party (PNP), along with other organizations, was determined to oppose various actions carried out by the current government.

A statement released on Friday, April 25, 2025, by the National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, outlined that the demonstration sought to defend the constitution and uphold the independence of the judiciary.

Charles Bissue and Andy Owusu granted GH₵200,000 bail each

0

A former Secretary of the defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), and Andy Owusu, an aide to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, have been granted bail in the sum of GH₵200,000 each by the High Court (Criminal Division) in Accra.

The two appeared before the court on Tuesday, May 6, over their alleged involvement in 15 criminal charges filed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), where their respective pleas were formally taken.

Following brief proceedings, the court admitted them to bail, setting the bond at GH₵200,000 apiece, with two sureties each, one of whom is required to be justified.

The matter has been adjourned to 29th May, 2025 for a Case Management Conference (CMC), a procedural step designed to streamline the trial process by clarifying issues, disclosing evidence, and setting timelines.

Legal representatives declined to comment after the session.

The charges were filed at the High Court (Criminal Division) in Accra on April 28, alleging that between January and February 2019, Mr Bissue, while serving as IMCIM Secretary, corruptly accepted bribes totaling GH₵35,000 from one Benjamin Adjapong, directly and through Owusu, to fast-track the renewal of an expired mining licence for a mining company, ORR Resources Enterprise without proper documentation.

Ghana protesters accuse president of power grab after chief justice’s suspension

0

Serwaa Akoto, who was at the protest in Accra, says the judiciary is under attack Serwaa Akoto, who was at the protest in Accra, says the judiciary is under attack

Hundreds of opposition protesters dressed in red and black have condemned a decision by Ghana’s president to suspend the country’s chief justice, and are demanding that she be reinstated with immediate effect.

They accuse President John Mahama of violating the constitution by failing to follow due process, and say he is interfering in the independence of the judiciary.

Gertrude Torkornoo was removed from her post last week pending investigations into her conduct – the first time a chief justice has been suspended in Ghana’s history.

Action was taken after the president said three people had sent petitions to him containing undisclosed allegations against Chief Justice Torkornoo.

Monday’s demonstration in Accra was led by the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), who were in power when Chief Justice Torkornoo was appointed by then-president Nana Akufo-Addo two years ago.

The NPP’s national organiser Nana Boakye Yiadom told the BBC her treatment was politically motivated and an attack on democracy.

Also taking part in the protests were three smaller opposition groups.

The opposition’s demands echo those made by the Ghana Bar Association last week. The grouping of top legal professionals said suspending the chief justice was unconstitutional and President Mahama must reverse it.

But that view is not shared by all.

A number of lawyers in the country argue it is within the president’s power to act when there is evidence of misconduct by a public officer, no matter the position. This view is also backed by the president’s supporters.

By law, chief justices in Ghana enjoy security of tenure, which means that they remain in office until retirement.

Yet Ghana’s constitution does empower the president to appoint, suspend or even fire the chief justice where there is evidence of wrongdoing, including incompetence and misbehaviour. However some Ghanaians argue due process has not been followed in this instance.

One protester, Serwaa Akoto, told the BBC: “The judiciary is under attack and we want the right thing to be done. Why is he suspending the chief justice?”

Also at the protest was Charles Oteng, who told the BBC: “We want to send a strong signal to the president. Yes, indeed, he has all the powers as a president, but the way he is attacking our judiciary is very alarming – and we the youth will not sit for him to do whatever he wants to do.”

Chief Justice Torkornoo is the third woman to hold the position in Ghana. Since winning power, Mahama’s National Democratic Congress has stepped up accusations of bias in her rulings of high profile political cases, which she denies.

She is expected to be summoned to answer questions in person in front of a committee investigating the allegations against her.

701 Diplomatic, Service Passports cancelled by Foreign Affairs Ministry

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has cancelled 701 Diplomatic and Service passports as part of a nationwide recall of official travel documents.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday, the affected passports include 341 unreturned Diplomatic passports and 360 Service passports, which have now been placed on a stop-list and are no longer valid for international travel.

The cancellation follows earlier public announcements on January 15 and March 10, 2025, instructing former officials and other categories of individuals to return their official passports. The affected individuals include:

  • Former Ministers and their spouses
  • Former Members of Parliament
  • Former Council of State members and spouses
  • Retired Justices of the Superior and Lower Courts
  • Former Regional Ministers, MMDCEs, and board members
  • Officials of the National Cathedral Project
  • Former non-career ambassadors and their dependents

Religious and traditional leaders, Businesspersons and entrepreneurs, and former government functionaries not currently in service.

The ministry stressed that all affected passports are to be confiscated if found in use, warning of strict enforcement at points of entry and exit.

This measure is aimed at ensuring compliance with the Passports and Travel Certificates Act, 1967 (NLCD 155), particularly sections 6 and 7, which regulate the issuance and use of official passports.

BoG raises GH¢3.42 billion through 56 day bills

Bank of Ghana's new headquarters Bank of Ghana’s new headquarters

The Bank of Ghana has raised GH¢3.42 billion through the issuance of 56-day bills in its latest Open Market Operation, reinforcing its liquidity management stance amid elevated inflation and efforts to stabilise short-term rates.

The auction conducted on Monday, May 5, 2025 priced the bills at a yield of 27.9 percent just below the benchmark monetary policy rate of 28 percent.

While the central bank did not disclose either the size of bids received or the auction target, market analysts view the issuance as successful, citing sustained demand for high-yielding cedi assets in a tightening monetary environment.

This latest intervention aligns with the BoG’s broader strategy to absorb excess liquidity from the banking sector and anchor inflation expectations.

The short-term securities also serve as a key instrument for influencing interbank rates and guiding money market pricing.

The success of the 56-day bill issuance reflects investor confidence in short-term sovereign credit despite macroeconomic uncertainties.

It also illustrates the BoG’s delicate balancing act of supporting fiscal operations while maintaining its inflation-targeting framework.

Proceeds from BoG bills are often deployed toward the short-term financing needs of the government suggesting ongoing coordination between fiscal and monetary authorities.

Prof. Gyampo engages Air Freight Stakeholders on cost of doing business

0

By Stanley Senya

Accra, May 06, GNA-Prof. Ransford E. V. Gyampo, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA), Monday held talks with air freight stakeholders at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) towards reducing the cost of doing business in the commercial shipping sector.

The engagement included a meeting with the management of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), the Agency mandated to plan, develop, manage, and maintain all airports in Ghana, including KIA.

The interaction follows similar engagements with stakeholders in the sea and land freight sectors.

In addition to the engagement with GACL, the CEO, in the company of top management members, paid a working visit to the offices of two major ground handling and cargo companies — Aviance Ghana and Swissport Ghana.

The GSA delegation also held a separate meeting with freight forwarders operating at the Kotoka International Airport to deepen stakeholder collaboration and address operational concerns.

A statement from the GSA said the Managing Director of GACL, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, welcomed the GSA team and congratulated Prof. Gyampo on his appointment.

It said she reaffirmed GACL’s commitment to working collaboratively with state institutions to ensure smooth and mutually beneficial operations.

“We are always ready to support GSA’s operations, and as we have collaborated in the past, we will continue to engage with you to improve the sector,” she said.

Prof. Gyampo recounted his visits to key sea freight stakeholders such as the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Meridian Port Services (MPS), and various shipping lines.

He also referenced engagements with land freight stakeholders, including the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Ghana Immigration Service at Aflao, Kpoglu, and Akanu-Noepe borders, as well as freight forwarders operating in those areas.

He said the visits were aimed at collecting first-hand information and encouraging all stakeholders to work towards achieving President John Mahama’s vision of boosting economic growth by reducing the cost of doing business in Ghana.

He added that with the enactment of the GSA Act 2024 (Act 1122), all shippers and shipping service providers were expected to adhere to a reasonable level of standards to improve their operations and ensure greater predictability for businesses.

“Our role is to protect the interests of shippers — whether by sea, land, or air — while also recognising the concerns of shipping service providers. We will incorporate operating standards into our Legislative Instrument (LI) to ensure that all sector players perform their duties diligently,” Prof. Gyampo said.

The statement said at Aviance Ghana, the Managing Director, Mr. Mark Kamis, expressed appreciation for the longstanding collaboration with GSA and looked forward to enhanced engagement.

He congratulated Prof. Gyampo on his appointment and reaffirmed the Company’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s global visibility.

“We are doing well. We want to continue contributing our quota to making Ghana visible globally through our work,” he said.

Prof. Gyampo emphasised that a key objective of the visit was to identify and address air freight issues that impacted the cost of doing business.

“We are here to listen and collaborate with you. Let’s create a win-win situation. The GSA exists to safeguard the interests of all players in the commercial shipping sector — both shippers and service providers — to ensure that your investments in Ghana continue to thrive,” he stated.

The Managing Director of Swissport Ghana, Mr. Gerald Suckling, lamented the unstable performance of the sector in recent years, and noted that the decline in the production of perishable and non-perishable goods in the country had caused some cargo airlines to halt operations in the country, negatively affecting Swissport’s business.

He also pointed out that despite being the largest and most patronised cargo handler over the years, Swissport was currently seeing a drop in exports.

He cited the delayed clearance of goods, largely due to importers’ poor preparation and funding issues, as another key challenge.

Mrs. Monica Josiah, Head of Operations at the GSA, commended Swissport for the positive feedback it received in the GSA’s Service Level Survey.

During a meeting with executives of Freight Forwarder Associations operating at KIA, several concerns were raised regarding operational challenges negatively affecting shippers.

Key amongst them was the frequent breakdown of the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS), which plays a crucial role in the clearance process.

The freight forwarders complained that outages of the ICUMS system sometimes lasted more than a day, leading to delays and increased costs, which were ultimately passed on to shippers.

They also criticised the slow responsiveness of some state agencies involved in the clearance process.

“One agency advertises 24-hour permit issuance, but in reality, it takes two or more days. Without their permit, we cannot proceed, and this causes delays,” one freight forwarder explained.

Another added, “Due to weight discrepancies, we cannot use the pre-clearance option in ICUMS. Often, the declared weight differs from the actual weight upon arrival, forcing us to restart the process. That’s why we prefer to begin clearance only after the consignment arrives.”

Mrs. Josiah urged freight forwarders to report such issues to the Shipper Support Unit at KIA with adequate evidence.

The GSA, she assured, would investigate and demand refunds or redress where applicable.

‘Those who justified National Security attacking me are today slapping a policeman’ – Sam George

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Constituency, Sam George Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Constituency, Sam George

The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Constituency and Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam George, has reacted to the alleged assault on a police officer by the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

In an X post dated May 6, 2025, Sam George pointed out what he perceives as a double standard while sharing a video of the assault he endured by National Security officers during the violent Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election in 2019 under the former New Patriotic Party government.

“The very people who said my words justified these attacks by two ‘national security’ operatives are today slapping a policeman who was simply doing his job?

“Hmmm. This life is truly a cycle. We pray for long life and good health. Cheers,” he added.

The Member of Parliament for Effutu and Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has drawn widespread public attention following an incident involving him and a Ghana Police Service officer during the #SaveTheJudiciary demonstration on Monday.

The incident allegedly showed the lawmaker, visibly angry, raising his hand to strike a police officer on the head while standing behind a barricade.

However, the lawmaker, in his defense, clarified that his actions were a response to provocation, claiming the police officer struck him as he attempted to join his colleagues at Parliament House.

The Effutu MP further explained the physical impact of the officer’s strike, “The impact dazed me, and I was visibly shaken and short of breath. In that moment, I spontaneously protested his conduct, asking why he would seek to harm me.

“The inspector facilitating my access, along with other officers, quickly intervened and assisted me into the restricted area, where I had to lean against the wall at the entrance of Parliament House to prevent myself from collapsing,” he stated.

The MP added, “A national service personnel member from Parliament, whom I know, approached and offered me water. Two CID officers from Parliament also checked on me and assisted me to a nearby security restroom, where I lay on a bench to stabilize.”

Subsequently, the Ghana Police Service has extended an invitation to the lawmaker to assist in their investigation of the incident.

According to the police, following a review of the incident, the service has written to the Speaker of Parliament, requesting the release of Alexander Afenyo-Markin to assist in the ongoing investigation.

Parliamentary Committee calls for swift action on delayed affordable housing project

0

The visit provided committee members with a firsthand look at the project's current status The visit provided committee members with a firsthand look at the project’s current status

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Works and Housing has called on the government to expedite the completion of the Affordable Housing Project at Pokuase-Mayera in Accra.

During a working visit to the project site on Monday, May 5, 2025, the Committee Chairman, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, emphasised the urgent need for government action.

The visit provided committee members with a firsthand look at the project’s current status and possible strategies for its completion.

“If we don’t act now, encroachment will worsen, putting infrastructure and human lives at risk,” he warned.

He stressed the importance of the Ministry of Finance releasing the necessary funds without further delay to facilitate the project’s completion.

According to Oppong Asamoah, the housing project, which was originally scheduled for completion in 2024, remains far from finished due to delayed disbursement of funds.

“With regard to the road infrastructure, the contractor has indicated that he wasn’t even paid mobilization fees. We need to urgently address these outstanding issues, which the government must resolve,” he stated.

Expressing deep concern over the delay, he described the project as a key government initiative hindered primarily by a lack of timely funding.

“According to the work plan, this should have been completed in 2024, but as you can see, there’s no visible structure. We’re also facing interference from encroachers, local residents, and landguards. None of us is satisfied with the current state of affairs, and it’s clear the government has not fulfilled its part of the contract,” he lamented.

He compared the stalled project to the Saglemi Housing Project, saying, “These are critical housing interventions, and the lack of financial support is jeopardising their success.”

The situation is further complicated by the activities of encroachers and landguards, who are hindering progress, with some reportedly attempting to disrupt the committee’s visit.

In light of this, Oppong Asamoah emphasized the need to address the security risks posed by these groups, warning that further delays could embolden illegal occupants and endanger construction workers.

“Considering the location of this project, it’s a prime area in Accra. Many would be proud to live here. Unfortunately, encroachers and landguards have become a major nuisance. The government must intervene and take this project seriously,” he noted.

He stressed the urgency of completing the project before further encroachment occurs.

“It’s good that we came here, and we’ll follow up. We’ll engage the Minister of Finance to explore funding options to ensure the project’s full implementation. Since it falls under the Ministry of Works and Housing, the Minister must prioritize it,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Oppong Asamoah expressed optimism about the project’s future.

“Once completed, this will be a beautiful residential community. In fact, I’d be happy to live here myself. The area is peaceful, well-located, and has great potential for families looking for a decent place to call home,” he added.

Congolese boxer Cederick Kalenga recorded a massive victory over Ghana’s Charles Lamptey during a fiercely contested Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) exhibition match at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

The Congolese boxer, who wore red shorts, consistently punched his opponent without giving him space to throw a punch.

Kalenga demonstrated agility and determination, relentlessly throwing kicks and punches, showcasing his judicious use of martial arts skills.

Lamptey, overwhelmed by the Congolese’s well-executed takedowns and submissions, couldn’t land any major kicks or punches to weaken his opponent during the bout.

At one point, Lamptey lay on the ground, seemingly lifeless after suffering a heavy blow, and was still being beaten when Ghanaian referee, Derrick Macaire, quickly intervened to pull Kalenga away from his opponent to prevent any further harm.

Ugandan opposition bodyguard charged after torture

Bobi Wine (left) has been calling for his bodyguard Eddie Mutwe (right) to be released Bobi Wine (left) has been calling for his bodyguard Eddie Mutwe (right) to be released

A bodyguard for one of Uganda’s opposition leaders, Bobi Wine, has been charged with aggravated robbery, days after the head of the military said he had detained him.

Last week Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also President Yoweri Museveni’s son, confirmed that he had been holding Eddie Mutwe five days after his disappearance.

The lawyer representing the bodyguard, whose real name is Edward Sebuufu, said his client had been tortured, telling the country’s Daily Monitor newspaper that he was beaten using “wires of electricity”.

Magellan Kazibwe added that Mr Sebuufu was in “great pain” and had also faced the squeezing of his “private parts”.

Mr Kazibwe told reporters that Mr Sebuufu had faced electrocution and that his team were planning to take him to hospital.

Rights groups have long accused the authorities of targeting the opposition especially during the run up to elections.

As Mr Sebuufu was brought to court on Monday, security operatives tried to shield him to prevent the media from seeing him.

But videos showed Bobi Wine’s bodyguard barefoot, and hardly able to walk.

Last week, Gen Kainerugaba posted on social media that Mr Sebuufu was in his custody. The army chief said the bodyguard had been shaved and that he planned to castrate him.

The detention comes as Uganda gears up for elections in 2026 where Museveni, who has been in power for nearly four decades, is expected to run against Bobi Wine.

Several human rights activists have condemned Mr Sebuufuu’s detention, meanwhile Uganda’s Human Rights Commission called for his immediate release.

Civil society organisations have also warned that his detention is part of a systematic campaign to silence dissent and crush opposition ahead of the general election.

However, the government blames the opposition for civilian and police clashes, saying they hold rallies without permission.

Lawyer Mr Kazibwe added that aside from aggravated robbery, Mr Sebuufu was also charged with simple robbery over an alleged incident in Lwengo District.

He stressed the need for strict enforcement of accountability standards in public office.

His comments follow President Mahama’s directive issued during the launch of the Code of Conduct, which set a final deadline of May 7, 2025, for all appointees to comply with Ghana’s asset declaration laws. The President warned that failure to meet this deadline would lead to immediate dismissal.

This directive comes after an earlier deadline of March 31 was missed by some appointees. It forms part of the administration’s broader commitment to promoting transparency, curbing corruption, and safeguarding public resources.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, Dr. Asante emphasized that individuals seeking public office must adhere to existing rules, including declaring their assets before taking office.

“There has to be some consequence. If the whole point is the appointment that they want, these are the rules of public office, which is accountability. If you don’t follow it, you don’t benefit.

“The way people clamour for these things, if that’s what you want, then you will also have to make sure that you submit to the rules to make sure that our public interest and our public funds are protected,” he stated.

He also pointed out that the obligation to declare assets extends beyond politicians.

“If you read Act 550, there is a long list of persons who are supposed to declare their assets. There is an omnibus clause that says everybody whose income is equivalent to a director of the civil service is also required to declare their assets.

“The whole idea is that everybody who has a certain level of power or authority within the state has to declare their assets, and ensure that they are not abusing their powers for private gains,” he added.

Why must teachers beg for their salaries – Melody Fafa Kportufe writes

0

The role of education in any economy or nation cannot be overstated. Yet, for rather unfortunate reasons, we seem to take for granted the very facilitators who make education possible—our teachers.

That’s why I find this year’s National Teachers’ Day theme so relevant and timely: “Empowering Educators: Strengthening Resilience, Building Sustainability.”

But this prompts some difficult questions: Are we truly empowering our teachers? Do they feel supported and motivated? Or… perhaps not.

Every few months, we are confronted with headlines about teachers picketing, protesting, or pleading—for salaries they’ve already earned. It’s not just disheartening; it’s disgraceful.

The latest example that comes to mind involves newly posted teachers who, after dedicating themselves to nurturing the next generation, have gone a staggering nine months without pay. Yes—nine months!

There’s an old adage: “If you want to destroy a nation, demoralize its teachers.”

In today’s world, it’s already challenging enough to be posted to a remote area where you’re unfamiliar with your surroundings. But to then struggle just to survive—without the pay you’ve earned—is simply unacceptable.

Watching a teacher break down in tears at the Ghana Education Service headquarters, after what she described as an exhausting night journey from Obuasi just to picket over months of unpaid salaries, raised countless questions in my mind.

How is this fair to anyone?

Why must professionals—those who form the backbone of our society—resort to demonstrations just to receive what is rightfully theirs? These aren’t bonuses or favors; these are earned wages.
So, who is responsible?

What makes this situation even more infuriating is the endless bureaucratic merry-go-round these teachers are forced to navigate.

Today, it’s the Ministry of Education. Tomorrow, the Ghana Education Service. Next week, the Ministry of Finance. Everyone passes the buck, while nothing changes. It’s a cycle of confusion, neglect, and systemic disrespect.

Who is regulating this process?

Who ensures teachers are paid on time?
Clearly, there’s a significant breakdown in accountability and empathy across the board—even between changes in government. If this were the private sector, heads would have rolled by now.

The government must recognize that National Teachers’ Day is not just about grand ceremonies or well-polished speeches. It is a mirror of how we treat those we entrust with shaping our future.
It is both morally and administratively wrong to make anyone—especially a teacher—beg for their livelihood.

We can do better.
And we must.

As Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, once said:
“Teachers are the backbone of any country—the pillar upon which all development stands.”

Immigration Service inaugurates residential, training facilities

0

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has inaugurated an 84-unit residential facility and a Centre of Excellence in Accra as part of efforts to boost training capacity, improve officer welfare and strengthen national security operations.

The residential facility comprises 42 two-bedroom and 42 three-bedroom apartments, while the training facility features lecture halls, an ICT lab, an e-learning area, administration, cafeteria and executive hostels.

The edifice also has a clinic, convenient shop, cafe, executive lounge and eateries among others, all designed to enhance the operational efficiency and morale of GIS officers.

The inauguration, which took place yesterday, was graced by former Comptroller Generals of the Service, senior government officials and officers of the GIS.
Significance

The Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Samuel Basintale Amadu, expressed gratitude to the government for its continued support and unwavering commitment to addressing the accommodation needs of the security services, highlighting the government’s recognition of the GIS as a critical pillar of national security and economic stability.

He explained that the centre would be a strategic hub for advanced post-entry training — not only for GIS officers but also for external institutions that may require the Service’s expertise.

He said the facility was expected to enhance the professional development of officers by equipping them with modern skills and knowledge in migration management, ultimately enabling them to address complex migration issues while safeguarding national security and promoting the dignity of migrants.

On the residential front, he stressed that the provision of quality accommodation reflected a deliberate investment in the welfare of personnel, which he believed would uplift morale and drive productivity.

Mr Amadu, therefore, issued a firm reminder to occupants to adhere strictly to the laid-down occupancy conditions, noting that regular inspections would be conducted and non-compliant residents risked eviction.

Government support

The Minister for the Interior,  Mubarak-Mohammed Munkaka, lauded the initiative and described it as a testament to the country’s commitment to securing its borders and improving the well-being of the security personnel.

He said the government was aware of the GIS’s infrastructure deficit and how it was grappling with regional office space and residential accommodation across the country, which impacted adversely on their performance such as easy mobilisation and quick deployment of personnel for operational duties among others.

“We are committed to bridging this gap to ensure that personnel of the security services have the necessary infrastructure and logistics to perform their duties effectively,” he added.

He commended the brilliant initiative of the GIS to enter a public-private partnership to address its pressing infrastructure needs and further encouraged the service to replicate such projects beyond Accra.

“I think these are some of the things that we need to encourage the other services to do.

Partnerships help because they bring their money forward to be able to provide a service, while the service takes its time to repay,” he said.

Bagbin was annoying but firm

0

Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has lauded Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin for his firm stance and independence during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) tenure in government, describing his leadership as a vital check on executive overreach.

Speaking on Break Fast Daily on Channel One TV on Tuesday, May 6, Dr. Adomako praised Bagbin for his ability to uphold the autonomy of Parliament despite being a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) during President Nana Akufo-Addo’s second term.

“In some ways, we were lucky in the second term of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to have an opposition Speaker of Parliament. And I must say that though he was annoying sometimes, he was putting the executive in check, so that the executive could not get away with anything, whatever the executive wished after cabinet,” he said.

He added that Bagbin’s impartiality and firmness benefited Ghana’s democratic process, ensuring that the separation of powers was maintained.

“It was in the interest of Ghana that God gave us a Speaker who had a different political ideology, to the extent that the NDC thought it remarkable to repeat the same person as the Speaker of Parliament.”

Dr. Adomako Kissi commended Speaker Bagbin for neither allowing executive pressure to derail his duties nor compromising the independence of the legislative arm.

“Despite Bagbin being an opposition Speaker of Parliament, he made sure and ensured that the executive is put in check to prevent the disruption of his work or the independence of Parliament,” he stressed.

University names must serve public interest, not political egos – Kwaku Azar

0

Legal scholar and governance advocate Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, widely known as Kwaku Azar, has reiterated his long-held view that public universities in Ghana should be named based on their geographical location, academic mission, or a combination of both, rather than after political figures.

In a strongly worded commentary, he described this approach as both principled and practical, arguing that it better reflects the national identity and public purpose of these institutions.

Banks fire 155 staff for theft — BoG Report

0

The banking sector in Ghana has witnessed a concerning surge in fraud cases, with a total of 155 staff members dismissed last year out of 365 found to have engaged in fraudulent activities.

This development is attributed to the rising cases of fraud in banks and Special Deposit-Taking Institutions (SDIs), which increased from 15,865 in 2023 to 16,733 in 2024, indicating a five per cent rise.

The total value of risk in the sector has also escalated, rising to approximately GH¢99 million in 2024, compared to GH¢88 million in 2023, representing a 13 per cent increase.

According to the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) 2024 Fraud Report, the rate of recovery of potential losses has become a significant challenge for banks due to prolonged legal proceedings that often lead institutions to discontinue pursuing cases.

The Banks, Special Deposit Institutions and Payment Service Providers 2024 Fraud Report of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), show that the rate of recovery of potential losses has become a challenge for banks due to prolonged legal proceedings that eventually lead these institutions to stop pursuing the cases.

“This is an indication that other staff implicated in fraud activities are either exonerated or given lesser punishments,” the report stated.

However, the Bank of Ghana report warned that banks were required to strengthen disciplinary policies and foster a culture of zero tolerance for fraud.

In 2024, banks reported a total count of 716 fraud cases, which indicated a 26 per cent drop from the count of 969 cases in 2023.

The downward trend in fraud cases is attributed to the improvement of internal controls within the banking sector.

Fraud types

The report indicated that the top five fraud types recorded in 2024 in terms of value at risk were: forgery and manipulation of documents, identity theft/impersonation, ATM/POS/Card, e-money and remittance fraud.

The Microfinance and Savings and Loans sub-sectors have also seen a significant increase in the number of cash theft fraud cases reported.

This alarming phenomenon is of grave concern to BoG, and as such, SDIs are required to enhance their internal controls to minimise cash theft.

The BoG has indicated its concern to the banks about the consistent and steady increase in regulated financial institution’s staff involvement in fraudulent activities in the banking sector.

“Consequently, Banks and SDIs are required to strengthen their internal controls, enhance staff due diligence mechanisms during recruitment, as well as reinforce continuous in-house staff training on professional conduct,” the BoG fraud report stated.

“Banks and SDIs should also ensure the prosecution of culprits to serve as a deterrent,” the report stated.

Electronics

In 2024, the number of electronic fraud incidents recorded was 15,673, representing a seven per cent rise as compared to 14,655 cases recorded in 2023.

This indicates that despite security enhancements, fraudsters can identify and exploit vulnerabilities in digital payment products.

In terms of the value at risk, the SDI sector recorded the following as the topmost fraud cases: cash theft/ cash suppression, credit fraud, burglary and e-money fraud.

Cash theft recorded the highest value at risk of Gh¢1.6 million, a slight reduction from the GH¢1.9 million recorded in 2023.

The value at risk recorded for credit fraud saw a substantial rise in 2024, compared to 2023. The values at risk were GH¢1.2 million and GH¢0.03 million for 2024 and 2023 respectively.

Burglary also emerged as part of the top fraudulent activities in the SDI sector. The year 2024 recorded a value at risk of GH¢0.73 million as compared to GH¢0.04.

Table of Men never ignored Nacee, there was a miscommunication

Founding member of Table of Men, Kwesi Ernest Founding member of Table of Men, Kwesi Ernest

Artiste manager and founding member of the gospel music advocacy group, Table of Men, Kwesi Ernest, has dismissed claims that the group showed bias by not supporting gospel musician Nacee’s campaign during the 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).

This clarification comes after MC Yaa Yeboah alleged on United Showbiz (May 3, 2025) that the group has been playing favourites with the gospel artistes it chooses to support.

However, in an interview with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie on May 5, 2025, Ernest strongly refuted the claims, explaining that the Table of Men never deliberately ignored any artiste.

He noted that the group’s support mechanisms are only activated when artistes or their management formally engage them.

“The Table of Men did not ignore any gospel act. What we are saying is that any musician who receives a nomination and believes the Table of Men has influence that could support their campaign, by canvassing for votes or increasing visibility, can reach out to us. We are always open and willing to support,” he explained.

Addressing the specific case involving Nacee, Ernest said the lack of support stemmed from a miscommunication.

He acknowledged Nacee’s stature in the gospel industry and expressed regret over the misunderstanding.

“In the case of my brother Nacee, whatever happened was due to miscommunication. Nacee is a whole authority on his own. With the establishment he has, it wouldn’t have been appropriate for anyone to launch a campaign for him without his knowledge,” he said.

“Maybe he assumed that because of our relationship, we would automatically step in. On the other hand, we may have been waiting for him to reach out. So there was miscommunication in between. I sincerely apologise to anyone who feels let down by our inability to support him as expected. It was an oversight,” he added.

The Table of Men has a strong track record of advocating for gospel artistes in major award categories, having previously championed acts like Diana Hamilton, and Piesie Esther.

Despite the 2024 miscommunication, Nacee had a highly successful year, earning several nominations and ultimately winning multiple awards, including Artiste of the Year at the 2024 Ghana Music Awards.

This wasn’t just a red carpet moment. It was a goosebump-inducing statement. It was culture, it was art, and above all, it was glory.

The outfit earned Lauryn Hill accolades as one of the top three best dressed, alongside Rihanna and Madonna.

Asset Declaration: No excuse justifies missing deadline

0

Deputy Government Spokesperson Shamima Muslim has attributed some appointees’ failure to meet the asset declaration deadline to reasons such as being out of the country and heavy workloads.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Monday, May 5, she explained that while some appointees may have been outside the jurisdiction before the deadline, others may have simply forgotten due to their demanding schedules.

However, she stressed that these reasons do not excuse the failure to comply.

“They didn’t do well, and so today they are faced with the consequence of their actions. There are those who have explained that they were out of the jurisdiction before the deadline, which also presupposes that if you had to travel, you ought to have done it early,” she said.

“A lot of them also just drive straight into deep work, so some even thought they may have done it, and they had forgotten or something of the sort, but a few of these that missed the deadline had a lot on their plate.”

Shamima added that with sanctions now looming, the appointees are expected to take the matter more seriously and act swiftly.

“There is no excuse really, and so I hope that the forfeiture of their three months’ salary will ginger them into the future to not take anything for granted at all,” she concluded.

Deborah Seyram Adablah breaks silence on bench warrant over contempt

0

Former National Service personnel embroiled in a widely publicized legal battle with First Atlantic Bank’s former CFO, Mr. Ernest Kwasi Nimako, has broken her silence following the issuance of a bench warrant for her arrest over alleged contempt of court.

The contempt charge is believed to be linked to recent public comments she made regarding the case.

She confirmed her awareness of the bench warrant, adding that she is in touch with her legal team and intends to present herself to the court within the stipulated period.

In a viral video message posted online, Deborah Seyram Adablah made a heartfelt appeal to the Ghana Police Service, pleading for humane treatment should they act on the court-issued warrant.

Deborah expressed concerns about possible mistreatment during her arrest, cautioning that any abuse—physical or verbal—would trigger further petitions against offending officers.

“Ghana Police Service, my name is Deborah… I’m sorry, I beg you people. If you want me, I know I’m being wanted, so I will avail myself. Please, I don’t want any of your men to lay hands on me… because when they do that, I’m going to petition against them.”

She emphasized that she is not a criminal and only seeks fairness as she cooperates with legal processes.

Her message, directed to the police and shared publicly on social media, comes amid renewed interest in the sensational “side chick saga,” which involves claims of breach of promise and financial support during her relationship with the senior banker.

The legal dispute has continued to draw public attention since it first emerged.

84-uint residential complex for GIS inaugurated in Accra

0

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing Ghana’s border and migration security, describing it as a national priority in the face of evolving security challenges.

He underscored the critical role of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and assured that the Ministry of the Interior would continue to prioritise the allocation of resources to enhance operational

 readiness.

The Minister made these remarks in Accra yesterday at the inauguration of the GIS Centre of Excellence and an 84-unit residential complex for its officers.

The residential project comprises 42 two-bedroom and 42 three-bedroom apartments, constructed to provide decent housing for GIS personnel.

The Centre of Excellence includes executive lecture halls, a cafeteria, executive hostels, a clinic, and other critical infrastructure to support advanced post-entry training and skills development in

 migration management.

According to Mr Muntaka Mubarak, the new facility would serve as a hub for innovation and capacity building, empowering immigration personnel to respond effectively to emerging migration and security challenges.

“We are committed to bridging the infrastructure gap to ensure that personnel of the security services have the necessary logistics to perform their duties effectively,”he stated, noting that longstanding accommodation and office space deficits have hampered the service’s performance, particularly in rapid mobilisation and deployment.

Moreover, the Minister used the opportunity to caution against poor maintenance of the newly constructed residential units and pledged full support to the Comptroller-General to evict any officer who failed to care for the property properly.

He also encouraged the Immigration Service to adopt a comprehensive maintenance plan and promote good community living practices, including regular cleaning routines to preserve the facility’s condition and reputation.

Addressing the ceremony, the Comptroller-General of the service, Samuel Basintale Amadu, expressed gratitude to the government of Ghana for their unwavering support to the service, noting that the completion of the project reflects the government’s recognition of the GIS’s essential role in national security and economic development.

The Comptroller-General also stated that the Centre of Excellence would serve not only GIS officers but also institutions requiring immigration-related training, saying that, “The Centre would enhance our ability to ensure the safety and dignity of migrants while promoting national security and development.”

Mr Amadu further emphasised that the new accommodation would boost officer morale and productivity by improving their living conditions. “As we commission these facilities, we reaffirm our commitment to excellence, professionalism, and service to the nation,”he added.

He concluded with a firm reminder that beneficiaries of the accommodation must adhere to occupancy conditions. “I will personally take interest to ensure that inspections are done properly, and if you are found not to be keeping your place properly, we will eject you,”he cautioned.

Youth and traditional leaders key to Ghana’s agricultural sustainability – Agrihouse Foundation Boss

0

The Founder of Agrihouse Foundation, Alberta Nana Akyaa Akosa, has underscored the pivotal role of youth and traditional leaders in advancing Ghana’s agricultural sustainability agenda, calling for structural investments to harness their potential.

Delivering a presentation at the Graphic Business/Stanbic Bank Breakfast Meeting on Tuesday, Madam Akosa said Ghana’s food security can only be secured through decentralised, locally informed, and inclusive approaches that leverage the energy of young people and the authority of traditional leaders.

“We see the youth who keep demonstrating beyond reasonable doubts that if given the platform, mentored, and if they have the right mindset and education on agriculture and its opportunities, they should be able to contribute to the future of food,” she stated.

The breakfast meeting, themed “Future of Food: The Critical Place of Sustainable Practices,” brought together key stakeholders from government, academia, civil society, and the private sector to explore actionable paths to agricultural resilience in Ghana.

According to Madam Akosa, the presence of traditional rulers at the forum was crucial, given their control over communal lands and their influence at the grassroots level.

“Our traditional leaders… are also part of governance. They are basically the heads or leaders within the community. How are governments or partners working with them to ensure there is some level of sustainability?” she asked.

Highlighting the challenge of under-utilised regional potential, she called for a regional value chain development strategy where each area focuses on what it can produce best.

“If we look at each region and what can be produced, then we can look at how we can industrialise it and create jobs,” she said.

She further pointed to education as a missing link in the food security value chain, stressing the need for practical agricultural training and innovation hubs in schools.

“Most schools are not having any demonstration centres… even the land meant for laboratories have been turned into dormitories,” she lamented.

Madam Akosa warned of the dangers of short-term thinking, especially in the context of illegal mining. “All of our farmers are even trading their lands for galamsey… because it gives them immediate returns,” she said, describing it as a major threat to long-term food production.

She criticised the inconsistency in implementing agricultural policies, noting that many programmes collapse with changes in government.
“A government comes with a sound policy… the minute they go, another one comes to abolish it. So there’s no continuity,” she said.

Madam Akosa concluded by urging stronger advocacy, mindset transformation, and leadership discipline to drive lasting solutions in agriculture.
“The issue of sustainability and the future of food is safe in our hands, but what practices, what approaches, what are we doing now, and how can we really advance it?” she asked.

The event, organised by Graphic Communications Group Ltd in partnership with Stanbic Bank Ghana, is part of a quarterly platform to examine pressing issues affecting the economy, particularly in agriculture, finance and development.

Focus on enforcing ethics, not just Code of Conduct – CDD’s Kojo Asante

0

Dr. Kojo Pumpuni Asante, Director of Advocacy and Policy Engagement at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), has urged President John Dramani Mahama to go beyond the Code of Conduct and focus on public sector ethics and accountability.

His comments come a day after President Mahama, on Monday, May 5, 2025, officially launched the Code of Conduct, a framework outlining acceptable behaviour and standards for political appointees.

The move is part of a broader initiative to promote transparency and discipline within public office.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, May 6, Dr. Asante described the code as a positive step but stressed the need for deeper reforms that tackle systemic ethical lapses across the public sector.

“A lot of the things that the president will do should be around public ethics, which we are not trying to enforce,” he stated.

He pointed to constitutional provisions under Article 284, which bars public officials from placing themselves in positions of conflict of interest, as a potential foundation for advancing ethics in governance.

“There are some issues around the constitutional review process under Article 284, we can use to address that. But currently, the code doesn’t address them.

“There is also the public sector financial management laws requirement that public officers must comply with.

“But while it is important, it has to be made public so that we can all hold public officers accountable,” he stated.

The Ghana Police Service has officially invited Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to assist in an investigation concerning an alleged assault on a police officer during the recent #SaveTheJudiciary demonstration.

Stop using synthetic chemicals in farming – Prof Atsu

0

Professor Francis Atsu, an expert in Sustainable Food Systems and Supply Chains, has issued a firm caution against the use of synthetic chemicals in agriculture, citing a multitude of adverse impacts on both the environment and human health.

Speaking at the Graphic Business and Stanbic Bank Breakfast Meeting held in Accra on Tuesday, May 6, Professor Atsu emphasised that the continued reliance on synthetic inputs in farming practices is unsustainable and poses long-term risks to food security and ecosystem integrity.

“Stop the idea of these synthetic chemicals, it will not help you. thinking that my land is no longer fertile and I am going to pump in fertilisers and other chemicals to boost fertility, you know what? Some of these chemicals have a life of about five years residual in the land, you apply fertiliser today and it will take about five years for that residual to wipe off,” he said.

Outlining the dangers associated with chemical-based agriculture, Professor Atsu noted that prolonged use of agrochemicals depletes soil fertility, contaminates water bodies, and disrupts natural pollination processes.

He also warned of the rising health concerns linked to chemical residues in food, including potential links to chronic illnesses and hormone disruption in humans.

The breakfast meeting, a collaborative platform hosted by Graphic Business and Stanbic Bank, brought together stakeholders from the agricultural, financial, and policy sectors to discuss innovative approaches to food production in Ghana’s rapidly changing climate.

Alexander Afenyo-Markin has been invited by the police Alexander Afenyo-Markin has been invited by the police

The Member of Parliament for Effutu and Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has drawn widespread public attention following an incident involving him and a Ghana Police Service officer during the #SaveTheJudiciary demonstration.

The incident allegedly showed the lawmaker visibly angry at a police officer and raising his hand to strike the officer on the head, while standing behind a barricade.

However, the lawmaker, in his defense, clarified that his actions were a response to provocation, claiming that the police officer struck him as he attempted to join his colleagues at Parliament House.

The MP also added that; “A national service personnel member from Parliament, whom I know, approached and offered me water. Two CID officers from Parliament also checked on me and assisted me to a nearby security rest room, where I laid down on a bench to stabilise,” he narrated in a statement.

Subsequently, the Ghana Police Service has extended an invitation to the lawmaker to assist in an investigation into the incident.

According to the police, following a review of the incident, the service has written to the Speaker of Parliament requesting the release of Alexander Afenyo-Markin to assist in the ongoing investigation.

“The officer in question will also be assisting with the investigation,” the police statement added.

On the back of the incident, Ghanaian critics have heavily criticised and condemned the actions of the lawmaker, urging the police to ensure that the law works.

Netizens pointed out that during the previous administration, protesters demonstrating against the harmful effects of galamsey were arrested and charged with unlawful assembly.

They highlighted what they perceive as a double standard, questioning why the lawmaker’s alleged actions appear to be receiving more lenient treatment.

TGMA 2025 Main Red Carpet to Be Strictly by Invitation

The red carpet has always been the heartbeat of major award shows, where glitz meets glamour, and stars make their grand entrance in unforgettable style.

The Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) is no exception. For the past 26 years, it has seen a parade of musicians, actors, media moguls, and fashion-forward personalities making bold statements on the iconic carpet. And if history is anything to go by, this year will be no different. However, things are about to change—dramatically.

Organisers of the 26th TGMA are shaking things up with a new set of rules aimed at restoring order and class to the red carpet experience. For the first time, walking the main red carpet will be by invitation only.

This means that only officially selected celebrities and dignitaries will be allowed to participate in the highly-anticipated “Who are you wearing?” segment, which will be broadcast live on television. To manage the flow and elevate the experience, there will now be two separate red carpet sessions: one for general media interviews and photoshoots, and a more exclusive main red carpet for televised appearances.

According to the organisers, this new approach is meant to bring “sanity and orderliness” to the process, which in previous years has faced criticism for being overcrowded and lacking production control.

For years, fans and critics alike have questioned why certain “celebrities” made it to the red carpet while others—perhaps more relevant—were left out or rushed through. Others have lamented the occasional lack of fashion polish, with some outfits making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

But with this refined system, the TGMA is promising a more focused and elevated red carpet experience—one that matches the prestige of the awards night itself.

The 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre. Produced by Charterhouse, the prestigious event is proudly supported by Guinness, British Council, Close-Up, KPMG, and TV3, and powered by Telecel – connecting energies.

With tighter control and a spotlight on quality over quantity, this year’s TGMA red carpet might just be the most iconic yet.

I will fight you until you regret picking a fight with a poor man like me— Abronye DC fires Agyapong

0

Kwame Baffoe, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), widely recognized as Abronye DC, has vowed to confront Kennedy Agyapong, a former presidential candidate hopeful, in an intense showdown.

According to reports from GhanaWeb, the two politicians had a heated exchange during the party’s ongoing national “Thank You Tour” on Monday, April 28, 2025, in Berekum, located in the Bono Region, where both figures were present.

The altercation began after Abronye spoke to the crowd, addressing several important issues he believed the party must tackle.

He responded to accusations that he had plotted against a presidential candidate during the party’s internal elections the previous year, denying these claims.

Additionally, he defended himself against criticisms regarding his alleged favoritism towards Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate.

Abronye also reflected on the party’s recent electoral defeat, stating that arrogance had been a key factor.

He warned party officials about making divisive statements that could benefit the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming 2028 elections.

He stressed the importance of genuine unity and discouraged insulting language within the party.

Although Abronye did not name any specific individuals in his speech, Kennedy Agyapong, who spoke after him, seemed to respond indirectly to the comments with remarks of his own.

Kennedy Agyapong took aim at party members who, in his view, contributed little financially but acted arrogantly, suggesting that their behavior was unearned.

He criticized those who, despite their lack of financial contributions, spoke as if they were superior figures in the party.

He then addressed Abronye directly, warning him to choose his words carefully, suggesting that even those of modest means should not speak with such confidence, particularly when richer individuals like himself were present.

While the two politicians seemed to have reconciled briefly during another stop on the tour, appearing to laugh and stand close together, Abronye reignited the tension during an interview with Movement TV on Monday, May 5, 2025.

In the interview, Abronye claimed that although Kennedy Agyapong had apologized for his previous comments, he had resumed his verbal attacks.

This led Abronye to announce his readiness to confront Agyapong head-on.

He declared that he was prepared to leave the NPP to face Agyapong directly, expressing his intent to fight until Agyapong regretted challenging him.

“Just because he has more money than me and people go to him begging, they want me to stay silent. But I won’t. I will fight him until he regrets picking a fight with a poor man like me,” he stated.

Abronye also accused Agyapong of using his wealth to dominate the party and intimidate others, stating that Agyapong’s actions had led him to believe he could control the party.

Abronye vowed to stand up against such treatment, promising to challenge Agyapong until he could no longer hold the NPP “hostage.”

NPP’s protest against CJ’s suspension was a childish act – Ade Coker

0

Former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Ade Coker, has dismissed the protest by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as a “childish” and futile political show.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, May 6, Ade Coker strongly defended the government’s decision and process in handling the matter, stating that due process is being followed and that President John Dramani Mahama remains committed to the constitutional provisions governing the judiciary.

“All that they did yesterday, five months into governance, the government is doing the right thing, due process is being followed. So for me, all the petitions they sent were all childish, because nothing will move President Mahama or the NDC not to adhere to the constitutional provisions in this country,” Coker asserted.

His comment follows a protest organised on Monday, May 5, by a coalition of opposition parties led by the NPP. The demonstration culminated in the presentation of three separate petitions to the Presidency, Parliament, and the Judiciary, urging President Mahama to reverse the suspension of the Chief Justice.

The Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, was suspended on April 22, 2025, after a prima facie case was established against her based on petitions submitted by private citizen Daniel Ofori, police officer Ayamga Akolgo, and civil society group Shining Stars of Ghana.

A five-member committee has since been constituted to investigate the allegations, in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution.

Asset Declaration: Appointees must follow rules or lose benefits

Dr. Kojo Pumpuni Asante, Director of Advocacy and Policy Engagement at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), has endorsed President John Dramani Mahama’s ultimatum to government appointees who have failed to declare their assets.

My tone and choice of words were inappropriate

Gomoa Central MP, Kwame Asare-Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has rendered an unreserved apology to Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine over comments made in a Facebook post, admitting his tone and choice of words were “inappropriate.”

In a Facebook post dated May 3, the legislator addressed what he described as a “misunderstanding” between himself and the A-G, clarifying that a controversial post on X (formerly Twitter) linking Dr. Ayine to corruption did not originate from him but from a fake account impersonating him.

Ghana hosts regional workshop to strengthen Arms Trade Treaty implementation

The Train-the-Trainers format of the workshop is designed to multiply impact The Train-the-Trainers format of the workshop is designed to multiply impact

Ghana is hosting the second regional Train-the-Trainers Workshop under the Arms Trade Treaty Implementation Support Project (ATT-ISP), with the goal of enhancing national and regional capacities to combat the illicit flow of arms across West Africa.

The workshop, taking place from May 5 to 9, 2025, in Accra, brings together security experts, policymakers, and representatives from several African countries to deepen their understanding of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) and strengthen implementation efforts at the national level.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Deputy Minister of Interior, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, expressed the government’s pride in hosting the event and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the ATT’s core principles of transparency, accountability, and the prevention of human suffering caused by illicit arms flows.

“This workshop is not merely a technical event,” the minister noted.

“It is a demonstration of our shared responsibility to uphold peace, security, and responsible arms control across the region.”

He revealed that Ghana is actively working to domesticate the ATT’s provisions, with a Draft Arms Bill and a National Control List currently under review for Cabinet approval.

These efforts aim to modernize and align Ghana’s arms legislation with global best practices.

The Train-the-Trainers format of the workshop is designed to multiply impact by equipping regional participants with not only technical knowledge but also soft skills such as communication and training delivery.

Participants will go on to train others in their respective countries, thereby strengthening national systems of arms control.

Dr Adam Bonaa, Acting Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA), emphasized the urgency of regulating firearms in Ghana.

“About 9 out of 10 violent crimes in Ghana today involve illicit firearms—many of which are unregistered and smuggled into the country,” he said.

“We must pass the Arms Bill to protect our citizens and prevent these weapons from falling into the wrong hands.”

Dr Bonaa stressed that the workshop’s significance lies in its long-term impact.

“You can’t train everyone at once, so we train trainers who will go on to multiply knowledge and build regional resilience,” he stated.

Carina Solmirano, Head of the ATT Secretariat, assured participants of the training’s relevance and effectiveness.

She underscored the importance of international cooperation and local ownership in achieving the treaty’s objectives.

The workshop is supported by the European Union, which has been a major partner in global efforts to improve arms control and promote peace and security through the ATT framework.

Vicky Bright, a former legal advisor to ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor, has spoken out against what she sees as growing political hypocrisy and inconsistency in Ghana’s implementation of the rule of law, according to Ghana Web.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on May 5, Bright criticized political personalities who change their viewpoints depending on which party is in power, warning that such behavior undermines the country’s democratic institutions.

She contended that the rule of law must be administered fairly and impartially, regardless of political party. “The rule of law does not bend based on which party holds power,” she stated during the interview.

Bright observed that Ghana’s democracy is undermined by partisan reactions to national concerns, with certain political leaders expressing selective outrage.

She emphasized how these contradictions weaken public trust and harm governance.

According to her, this trend has been seen across governments, with actions that were previously ignored under President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration now being fiercely attacked by those who remained silent.

She urged political players to be consistent and transparent in their advocacy, emphasizing that a fair judicial system cannot be constructed on double standards. “Selective outrage does not build a better Ghana,” she told the crowd.

Bright asked Ghanaians to engage in national contemplation and hold all political leaders accountable and fair.
