The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has destroyed more than GH¢12 million worth of illicit drugs at Bundase, warning drug peddlers of intensified crackdowns.
The haul, one of the largest recorded in such a short period was seized within just two months. It included 6,513 kg of cannabis valued at GH¢651,300, 1.5 kg of cocaine worth $13,500, and nearly six million capsules of tramadol, ecstasy, and other substances valued at GH¢11.8 million.
In an adomonline.com report on August 23,2025, Brigadier-General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, Director-General of NACOC, disclosed that tramadol made up almost half of the destroyed substances, including a huge consignment intercepted in a 40-foot container at Tema Port.
The drugs, verified on-site by the Ghana Standards Authority, were destroyed under court order.
Responding to concerns about redirecting seized substances for pharmaceutical use, Brigadier-General Mantey explained that NACOC’s mandate is limited to enforcement, not repurposing.

“We are implementers of policy, and so we don’t dictate how seized products should be used. Until the law changes, we will continue to destroy them,” he said.
NACOC has urged traditional and religious leaders, as well as other state agencies, to intensify support in the fight against drug trafficking, stressing the impact of narcotics on young people in schools and universities.
“Our antennas are very high, and we are closing in on most of them. When we get them, they will regret it,” Brigadier-General Mantey warned.
The Commission says it intends to sustain the momentum, with more operations and destruction exercises expected in the coming months.

The announcement was made at the TICAD 9 in Yokohama
Tanzania has been named among four African countries set to benefit from Japan’s newly launched “hometown initiative,” a scheme designed to deepen ties with Africa while tackling Japan’s demographic challenges.
Under the programme, Nagai City in Yamagata Prefecture will serve as a symbolic hometown for Tanzanians, offering opportunities for skilled professionals and blue-collar workers to acquire training and employment in Japan.
The initiative also includes special visa categories aimed at creating structured pathways for Africans seeking to upskill.
Other African countries participating are Nigeria, Ghana, and Mozambique, paired respectively with Kisarazu in Chiba, Sanjo in Niigata, and Imabari in Ehime.
The announcement was made at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Yokohama, where Japan pledged $5.5 billion in investment across Africa.
The funding will focus on private sector-led growth, empowerment of youth and women, and advancing regional integration.
By directly linking its municipalities with African nations, Japan hopes to spur cultural exchange, skills transfer, and manpower development, while also revitalising regional cities grappling with ageing populations and shrinking workforces.
The initiative is also viewed as part of Japan’s broader Africa strategy, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and counterbalancing China’s growing influence on the continent.
For Tanzania and the other participating nations, the arrangement promises enhanced professional opportunities, closer economic cooperation, and long-term partnerships that could shape the future of labour and development ties with Japan.
Julius Debrah arrived in Akwatia today to rally support for the ruling party’s candidate ahead of next week’s crucial by-election in the Eastern Region constituency.
The Chief of Staff’s visit comes just eight days before voters head to the polls on September 2, with both major parties intensifying their campaigns for the vacant parliamentary seat. Debrah’s presence signals the National Democratic Congress’s determination to capture what has traditionally been opposition territory.
His itinerary includes meetings with traditional authorities and community elders before taking the campaign directly to Akwatia’s streets. The senior government official will be promoting lawyer Benard Bediako Baidoo, the NDC’s chosen candidate for the contest.
Party organizers hope Debrah’s high-profile involvement will energize grassroots supporters and boost turnout in key areas. The Chief of Staff’s reputation as an experienced political strategist could prove valuable in mobilizing undecided voters.
The by-election became necessary following the death of Ernest Kumi, who had represented the constituency for the New Patriotic Party. Kumi passed away just six months after securing re-election in December’s general elections, creating an unexpected political vacuum.
The NPP faces the challenge of defending what they consider a stronghold while operating from opposition. Party leaders have framed their campaign around honoring Kumi’s legacy and maintaining continuity in local representation.
Both parties recognize Akwatia’s strategic importance beyond the single parliamentary seat. The result could provide early signals about voter sentiment toward President John Mahama’s new administration and the NPP’s effectiveness in opposition.
Local issues including mining concerns, infrastructure development, and youth employment have dominated campaign discussions. The constituency’s history with illegal mining activities has made environmental restoration a key talking point for candidates.
Debrah’s visit represents the NDC’s most senior government intervention in the race so far. His involvement suggests the ruling party views this seat as winnable despite the constituency’s recent voting patterns.
The September 2 contest will test both parties’ organizational capabilities and their ability to connect with voters in a changing political landscape.
Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has urged colleges of education across the country to strengthen partnerships with universities in order to roll out undergraduate degree programmes.
According to gbcghanaonline.com report on August 24, 2025, he explained that such collaborations would make higher education more accessible to teacher trainees while addressing challenges of distance and limited facilities.
“We must create opportunities that bring education closer to our future teachers, rather than burdening them with barriers,” the report stated.
The minister made the call during the inauguration of new governing councils for ten colleges of education.
The institutions include Dambai, Akatsi, St Francis, Fosu, Our Lady of Apostles, Holy Child, Kibi, Presbyterian Women’s, SDA, and St Louis Colleges of Education.

According to him, closer collaboration with universities will not only improve the quality of teacher training but also enrich professional preparation.
“By aligning our colleges more closely with established universities, we will enhance the standards of teacher education and equip our trainees with modern skills,” the report indicated.
He also noted that such partnerships would give teacher trainees more flexible options to pursue their studies.
“A teacher trainee in Fosu, for example, should not be disadvantaged simply because of geography or infrastructure. Through partnerships, we can provide flexible academic pathways for all,” it said.
Haruna Iddrisu challenged the new governing councils to take leadership in this transformation.
“Your role goes beyond administration. You are to be vision bearers who can steer these colleges into stronger institutions that produce the kind of teachers Ghana needs,” the report said.
The minister further assured the institutions of government’s support in strengthening facilities and policy frameworks that would make the partnerships a reality.
“Government is ready to back these initiatives because we know that the future of our education system rests on the shoulders of well-prepared teachers,” it stressed.

Dr. Muhammed was among eight individuals who lost their lives when a military Helicopter they were travelling in crashed in Adansi Akrofoum in the Ashanti Region.
His passing has created a vacancy in the Tamale Central seat, prompting preparations for a by-election in accordance with Article 112(5) of Ghana’s Constitution.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not field a candidate in the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election. In a statement signed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party said the decision was taken during a National Steering Committee meeting held on Monday, August 11, 2025, at its national headquarters.
The resolution, made in line with Article 10(10)(1) of the NPP Constitution, was influenced by what the party described as the “circumstances under which the Tamale Central seat has become vacant” and the need to avoid deepening political divisions at a time of national mourning.

Shatta Wale undergoing a spiritual cleansing ritual
Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale, has undergone a spiritual cleansing ritual at the Teshie Next Door Beach, days after he was granted bail by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
According to a report by citinewsroom.com on August 24, 2025, the ritual, led by Teshie Gbuglah Mantse, Original Nii Martey Laryea I, is believed to be a traditional act to rid the musician of any negative energy or spiritual burden following his recent legal issues.
Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah, was invited for interrogation in connection with a luxury Lamborghini Urus that is linked to a $4 million fraud case under investigation by US authorities.
Shatta Wale released after EOCO detention
He was granted bail on Thursday, August 21, with his initial GHS 10 million bail reduced to GHS 5 million with two sureties.
As part of his bail conditions, the artiste is required to report to EOCO three times a week.
The Lamborghini Controversy
The vehicle at the center of the investigation was traced to Shatta Wale by EOCO after being flagged by the FBI and the US Department of Justice (DOJ).
The car was originally associated with Nana Kwabena Amuah, a Ghanaian currently serving a prison sentence in the US for his role in the large-scale fraud operation.
Shatta Wale has claimed he bought the Lamborghini “off the street” from someone named “ZAK.”
Key takeaways from EOCO’s statement on Shatta Wale’s Lamborghini case
However, he has not provided any formal documentation of ownership other than a customs declaration linked to Amuah.
Investigators are working to determine whether the musician knowingly purchased the proceeds of crime or was an unwitting party to the transaction.
Neither Shatta Wale nor his team has commented on the spiritual cleansing ritual.
EOCO’s investigations into the matter are ongoing.

She also served as Minister for Community Development, Gender, and Children for five years prior.
As Foreign Minister, she played a key role in regional diplomacy, particularly in the Great Lakes Region. She chaired the Council of Ministers of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, which led to the signing of a Pact on Security, Stability and Development.

Ghana Stock Exchange officials emphasized the critical role of media partnerships in strengthening capital markets during a specialized training program for financial journalists yesterday.
The session, conducted in collaboration with the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists[IFEJ], focused on helping reporters better interpret and communicate corporate announcements to the investing public. Exchange leadership highlighted how proper financial reporting builds investor confidence and market participation.
Deputy Managing Director Frank Berle’s remarks, delivered by Head of Trading and Surveillance Harriet Bus-Moses, praised media houses for their coverage of recent dividend payments and corporate paper redemptions. These stories have driven market interest and boosted confidence among retail and institutional investors.
The training program aimed to equip journalists with tools for transforming technical corporate disclosures into accessible narratives that serve both investors and the broader public. Exchange officials argued that well-told financial stories help demystify complex business information and guide investment decisions.
Market performance data shared during the session showed strong gains across key indicators. The GSE Composite Index has advanced 50.08% year-to-date through August 21, while the Financial Stock Index posted a 43.30% increase over the same period.
Fixed income markets have also demonstrated robust activity, with trading volumes reaching 143.21 billion Ghana cedis by August 20. This represents a 51.33% increase compared to the corresponding period last year, indicating sustained investor appetite for debt instruments.
The Exchange operates six distinct markets designed to serve diverse capital-raising needs. These include the Main Market, Ghana Alternative Market, Fixed Income Market, Green and Sustainable Bonds Market, Commercial Paper Market, and Over-the-Counter Market.
Officials stressed that transparent communication remains fundamental to healthy capital market development. They positioned financial journalists as essential partners in the nation-building process through their role in educating the public about investment opportunities and market dynamics.
The collaboration between the Stock Exchange and media organizations spans over three decades, with journalists helping to increase visibility for listed companies and market activities. This partnership has proven particularly valuable in promoting financial literacy among Ghanaian investors.
Exchange leadership expressed commitment to continuing these educational initiatives as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s capital markets infrastructure and expand participation among domestic investors.

The Special Anti-Galamsey Task Force set up by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has impounded two excavators in the Ashanti Region during intensified operations against illegal mining.
Acting on credible intelligence, a 37-member team led by ASP Bawah Abdul Jalil embarked on a mission to Dwendwenase, a suburb of Juaso in the Asante Akim South Municipality.
With six service vehicles, the team targeted parts of the Dwendwenase Forest Reserve, where illegal mining activities involving foreign nationals, reportedly Chinese, were taking place.
Upon reaching the site, the suspects fled, abandoning two excavators. One was successfully recovered and loaded onto a low-bed carrier, while the second, found to be faulty, could not be moved.
On their return to the Patase base, the task force received intelligence about another excavator hidden in a cocoa farm at Atta Ne Atta, a nearby village. The machine had been deliberately disabled by its operator to prevent seizure, but was eventually restarted and secured. The Two excavators are now in safekeeping at the Patase base, pending further investigation and legal action.
Meanwhile, the task force has appealed for cooperation from the public, especially opinion leaders and residents of mining communities, to support the national fight against illegal mining, which continues to threaten Ghana’s environment and water bodies.
Pan-African energy developer AXIAN Energy has launched construction of four solar power plants across Benin in partnership with local investor SIKA Capital, marking the company’s entry into the West African nation’s renewable energy market.
The €45 million initiative will establish solar facilities in Bohicon, Parakou, Djougou, and Natitingou with a combined capacity of 50 megawatts. The plants are designed to supply clean electricity to approximately 50,000 households while advancing Benin’s goal of achieving 30% renewable energy in its national mix by 2030.
Development finance institutions will provide €35 million in project financing, reflecting confidence in both the technical viability and expected socioeconomic impact of the solar infrastructure. The remaining investment comes from the project partners and other private sources.
AXIAN Energy CEO Benjamin Memmi described the project as a decisive milestone for expanding renewable energy access across the region. He emphasized the collaboration with Beninese authorities and SIKA Capital in delivering infrastructure that will create a more resilient energy foundation for the country.
SIKA Capital Chairman Tchegnon Amoussou highlighted five years of preparation working closely with government officials and local communities in the four target cities. He characterized the project as Benin’s first independent renewable energy producer and evidence of the country’s attractiveness for infrastructure investment.
The solar plants will integrate with Benin’s national electricity grid through partnerships with state-owned SBPE and SBEE, the country’s primary electricity generation and distribution companies. Both the Ministry of Energy, Water and Mines and the Ministry of Economy and Finance are actively supporting the initiative.
AXIAN Energy operates renewable energy projects across nine African countries with a current portfolio of 183 megawatts and development pipeline exceeding 800 megawatts. The company targets over one gigawatt of installed renewable capacity by 2030 as part of its pan-African expansion strategy.
For SIKA Capital, the Benin solar project represents a significant step in its regional development ambitions. The Cotonou-based company focuses on renewable and transitional energy investments across West Africa, drawing on shareholder expertise from previous projects totaling more than 200 megawatts.
The four solar installations will be strategically distributed across different regions of Benin, ensuring broad geographic coverage and grid stability benefits. Construction timelines and commercial operation dates were not specified in the announcement.
Benin’s renewable energy transition has gained momentum in recent years as the government seeks to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports and improve energy security. The country’s 2030 renewable energy target aligns with broader West African regional goals for sustainable power generation.
The project announcement comes as African nations increasingly attract international investment in solar and wind projects, driven by abundant natural resources and growing electricity demand from expanding urban populations.
Wisdom Kwaku Deku is the Executive Director of NIA
The National Identification Authority (NIA) is seeking to be placed permanently under the Ministry of the Interior through a proposed amendment to its founding legislation, the NIA Act, 2006 (Act 707).
According to a report by 3News on August 24, the NIA’s Executive Director, Wisdom Kwaku Deku, indicated that the amendment is intended to formally integrate the Authority into Ghana’s security framework.
If passed by Parliament, the new law would provide security agencies with direct, albeit clearly defined, access to the NIA database and align the Authority’s operations more closely with national security objectives.
“National identity is a national security issue,” Deku said.
Security agencies to gain access to NIA database under new bill – CEO
He explained that the current Act does not assign the NIA to a specific ministry, which has led to frequent reshuffling between different ministries over the years, including Public Services, Communications, and Monitoring and Evaluation.
This constant movement, he noted, has created instability and hindered the Authority’s ability to form lasting partnerships.
Enhancing National Security and Law Enforcement
Deku emphasised that placing the NIA permanently under the Ministry of the Interior will improve coordination and allow the Authority to more effectively carry out its mandate.
NIA registers 190,000 persons within first half of 2025
He stressed that it has become a key benefit for law enforcement: “With defined access to the NIA database, police officers will be able to track suspects more easily through their identification card records. This is a major boost for crime-fighting efforts.”
He added that the proposed changes are not merely administrative but are crucial for ensuring the NIA becomes a reliable partner in safeguarding national security.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has urged residents and settlers along the Bagre Dam to evacuate immediately, following confirmation that the annual spillage will begin earlier than scheduled.
In an update issued on Saturday, August 23, 2025, the authorities of SONABEL, managers of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso, revealed that water levels have risen faster than expected.
The spillage, initially planned for Wednesday, August 27, will now take place on Monday, August 25, 2025.
According to SONABEL, the Bagre Dam currently stands at an elevation of 234.27 meters, representing 90.24% of its filling rate, just 0.73 meters below its maximum retention level.
Similarly, the Kompienga Dam is at 177.90 meters, with a filling rate of 79.36%, and 2.10 meters below its normal retention level.
NADMO warns that the spillage, which occurs annually, often leads to severe flooding along the Black Volta basin, resulting in displacement, loss of lives, snakebites, and destruction of farmlands.
“NADMO is calling on all communities in low-lying areas to move to safer grounds before the spillage begins to avoid any casualties,” the statement read.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially phased out the double track system, announcing that all Senior High Schools will reopen in October 2025 under single track and transitional calendars.
In a circular signed by the Director of Schools and Instructions Division, Mr. Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, the GES directed Regional Directors to ensure schools adhere strictly to the new arrangements for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Flood alert: Bagre Dam to spill two days earlier than scheduled
Featured
Mohammed Fugu
2 minutes read
Contrary to an earlier announcement that the spillage of the Bagre Dam would take place on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, authorities in Burkina Faso have rescheduled the exercise to Monday, August 25, 2025.
The decision follows a rapid rise in water levels that has exceeded initial projections.
In a statement, SONABEL, the agency managing the Bagre and Kompienga dams, explained that the speed of the water rise had surpassed their estimates, forcing them to open the floodgates earlier than planned.
As of Saturday, August 23, 2025, the Bagre Dam recorded an elevation of 234.27 metres with a filling rate of 90.24 per cent, just 0.73 metres below its maximum retention level.
Similarly, the Kompienga Dam stood at 177.90 metres with a filling rate of 79.36 per cent, leaving only 2.10 metres before reaching its normal retention capacity.
SONABEL stated:
🚨 Early Opening of Bagré Dam Valves 🚨 “SONABEL informs the coastal populations of the hydroelectric dam of Bagré that, following the heavy rainfall recorded in recent days, the water level of the hold has reached a critical threshold and requires a faster evacuation of the surplus.
“Consequently, SONABEL will open the valves of the dam flood evacuator from Monday, August 25, 2025 from 08 o’clock, instead of Wednesday, August 27, as initially announced.
“SONABEL therefore invites the coastal populations living downstream of the dam to remain vigilant and to take all necessary precautions against the risks of flooding that may result from this measure.
“SONABEL, together at the service of a great ambition!”
The announcement serves as an early warning to communities along the White Volta Basin in both Burkina Faso and Northern Ghana, which often experience flooding following spillage from the Bagré Dam.
Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has sent a clear message to some his internal opponents in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries, who he said have resorted to “unfortunate” tribal and religious campaign against him.
Addressing party members in New York Sunday night during the 33rd Anniversary celebration of NPP USA, Dr. Bawumia expressed disbelief over the development, which he said, represented the views of only “the bigots” and not the true values of the NPP.
Before his address Sunday, a viral video of flagbearer aspirant, Bryan Acheampong, emerged, in which Acheampong told delegates that the NPP ought to change Bawumia as its presidential candidate because as a Mamprusi, the NPP lost Kusasi votes in 2024 due to the Mamprusi-Kusasi conflict.
Addressing the NPP faithful in New York, Dr. Bawumia referenced Acheampong’s comment as “tribal bigotry,” describing it as “unfortunate,” as well as other tribal and religious comments by other aspirants and their assigns, and wondered why his religious and tribal affiliations were being used against him now.
“An opponent has said delegates should not vote for me because I am Mamprusi and that we will lose votes in the Kusasi areas. This is so unfortunate,” he said.
“Another contender against me, has also been promoting the religion card against me.”
Continuing with examples of “religious and tribal bigotry” against him and his family, Dr. Bawumia also referenced a recent claim by a former NPP minister and ambassador, as well as a Kennedy Agyapong campaign coordinator, Asomah-Cheremeh, who urged NPP delegates not to vote for Bawumia to become the NPP’s flagbearer again because his wife, Samira, according to Asomah-Cheremeh, was not a true Ghanaian.
“Recently, Mr. Asomah-Cheremeh, a former minister, former ambassador, and former regional chairman of Bono and a coordinator for Kennedy Agyapong has introduced a new argument into the mix. He says that delegates should not vote for me because my wife Samira is not a true Ghanaian. Really??? So how can we campaign to minorities in a general election? Just unbelievable.”
The former Vice President said, the bigotry has made him realise ”how desperate and dangerous” some of the internal opponents have become, and wondered why he and his wife did not suffer such attacks when they were working for the party.
“When I was defending the party in the Supreme Court in 2013 they did not say that I was a Mamprusi, a northerner, or a Muslim,” he said.
“When I was giving lectures and campaigning for the party to come into office in 2016, they did not say that I was a Mamprusi, a northerner, or a Muslim.”
“When my campaign in the north made the difference in our winning the 2020 election, they did not say I was a Mamprusi, a northerner, or a Muslim.”
“When Samira was campaigning the length and breadth of Ghana for the party, they did not say she was not a true Ghanaian.”
“So what has changed? Why Now?”
Despite his disappointment in the tribal and religious campaign against him and his wife, Dr. Bawumia sounded optimistic and cautioned the ”tribal and religious bigots” that their mission would fail because it does not represent the views of the NPP and “the NPP will always triumph over tribal and religious bigots.”
“Let us be clear that these views do not represent the views of the rank and file of the party,” he said.
“We have been the party that has over the years offered hope to the largest diversity of our peoples. Under our tent it has not mattered where you come from. Whether you are a Sefwi, Fante, Ewe, Ashanti, Ga-Dangbe, Krobo, Dagomba, Wala, Dagarti, Konkomba, Frafra, Kusasi or Mamprusi.”
“It has not mattered what religion you practice (Whether you are a Christian, Muslim or a traditional African religious practitioner). It has not mattered whether you are rich or poor or whether you are formally educated or not.”

Dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has undergone a spiritual cleansing at the Teshie Next Door Beach, days after his release from the custody of the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO).
The cleansing ritual, led by the Teshie Gbuglah Mantse, Original Nii Martey Laryea I, is believed to be a symbolic act to rid the musician of any negative energy or spiritual burden following his legal troubles.
Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah, was granted bail on Thursday August 21 after being held in EOCO custody in connection with a luxury Lamborghini Urus linked to a $4 million fraud case currently under investigation by U.S. authorities.
According to his legal team, the original GHS 10 million bail was reduced to GHC5 million with two sureties. As part of his bail conditions, the artiste is required to report to EOCO three times a week while investigations continue.
The vehicle at the center of the controversy was traced by EOCO to Shatta Wale after being flagged by the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice(DOJ). It was originally associated with Nana Kwabena Amuah, a Ghanaian serving a prison sentence in the United States for his role in the massive fraud operation.
Shatta Wale, who claimed to have bought the Lamborghini “off the street” from someone possibly named “ZAK,” has not provided any formal documentation confirming ownership, apart from a customs declaration linked to Amuah. Investigators are still trying to determine whether the musician knowingly purchased proceeds of crime or was unaware of the car’s shady background.
So far, neither the artiste nor his team has commented on the significance of the ritual.
EOCO’s investigations remain ongoing.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is a former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of NPP
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer, has called on members of his party who are promoting tribal narratives to desist immediately and allow the NPP to heal from its 2024 electoral setback.
Speaking in New York on Sunday, August 24, 2025, at the party’s 33rd Anniversary celebration, he described such tactics as a grave threat to the unity and survival of the NPP.
He singled out attempts by some aspirants to argue that his ethnic background made him unelectable, warning that such propaganda was baseless and harmful.
“Let us be clear that these views do not represent the rank and file of the party. The NPP will always triumph over tribal and religious bigots. What we need is unity to go forward and win 2028,” he stated.
Dr Bawumia pointed out that the NPP’s traditions have always rested on inclusivity, citing the party’s roots in the United Party (UP), which brought together groups from various regions, religions and communities, including the Northern People’s Party, the Muslim Association Party, the Ga Shifimokpee and the Anlo Youth Organisation.
“It is clear therefore that the bonds of unity in diversity have been our lifeblood and our foundation. Now more than ever, we must refresh them,” he declared.

He further reminded the party that the NPP had never defined him by his identity when he defended the party in court, campaigned across the country, or spearheaded initiatives that helped deliver electoral victories in 2016 and 2020.
“When I was campaigning the length and breadth of Ghana, nobody said I was a northerner, a Mamprusi or a Muslim. So, what has changed now?” he asked.
Calling for maturity, he urged party members to put aside bitterness and rally around a common purpose.
“This propaganda risks pigeonholing the NPP as a tribal and sectional party. That is not who we are. We are the party of unity, the party that embraces all. Let us not repeat the divisions that cost us in 1979. If we heal and stand together, we will be unstoppable in 2028,” Dr Bawumia concluded.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is a former Vice President of Ghana
Former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has thrown down the gauntlet to his rivals in the party’s upcoming leadership race, urging them to compete on the basis of vision, policies and proven achievements rather than divisive rhetoric.
Addressing the NPP New York 33rd Anniversary celebration on Sunday, August 24, Dr Bawumia said the future of the party and Ghana required leadership defined by integrity and competence, not tribal or religious propaganda.
“If you want to contest me, come with a vision, come with your ideas, come with your track record, come with your integrity and let us decide,” he told the gathering.
He dismissed attempts to discredit him on the basis of his northern roots or Islamic faith, describing such propaganda as false, dangerous and unworthy of the NPP’s democratic tradition.
Dr Bawumia reminded his critics that he had served the party faithfully through critical moments, including defending the NPP in court during the 2013 election petition, campaigning tirelessly for its victories in 2016 and 2020, and advancing major national reforms such as digitalisation.
He asked why, after years of loyal service, his identity was suddenly being used against him.
The former Vice President stressed that the NPP had historically thrived on inclusivity, bringing together diverse traditions and communities under its tent.
He noted that past victories had been built not on sectionalism but on a collective vision for Ghana’s progress.
Dr Bawumia urged the party to focus its internal contest on leadership qualities such as humility, incorruptibility, steadiness and competence.
Dr Bawumia concluded by warning that succumbing to tribal or religious bigotry would endanger the very survival of the party.
“The NPP has always been the party that embraces all Ghanaians, regardless of where they come from or what religion they practise. That is our heritage and our strength. If we stay true to this and focus on ideas, we will be well positioned to win the 2028 elections,” he said.

Prof Evans Akwasi Gyasi is the Director of the Trade Growth Network
Associate Professor in International Trade and Director of the Trade Growth Network, Prof Evans Akwasi Gyasi, has raised concerns over the Ghana Police Service’s decision to deploy 5,000 officers for the upcoming Akwatia by-election.
Prof Gyasi described the figure as excessive, insisting that elections should be free, fair, and devoid of violence.
“I like the fact that the Ghana Police Service has given us the firm assurance that in the unlikely event that any destruction happens, they are well prepared. But why should we deploy 5,000 people? Are we in a war front?” he asked in an interview reported by adomonline.com on Saturday, August 23, 2025.
He drew comparisons with elections in the United Kingdom, where he resides, noting that voting is conducted without heavy security presence.
We have got our eyes on Akwatia, nobody should think of causing trouble’ – IGP warns
“In the UK, when we are voting, nobody campaigns, nobody raises billboards. You just go, cast your vote and leave we don’t care who sees you,” he indicated.
The academic questioned why a parliamentary election should generate threats of violence, stressing that elections are simply an avenue for citizens to choose their leaders.
“Why should we kill ourselves because of one seat in parliament? Ghana is neither for the NDC nor NPP; it is for Ghanaians. Until we come to that understanding, we will continue to live in fear during elections,” he said.

The race for the Tamale Central parliamentary seat has further narrowed, as a second aspirant has bowed out of the contest, Citi News has gathered.
Alhaji Ibrahim Seidu, an engineer by profession, has withdrawn from the race, joining Halid Abdul Rauf, a lawyer and National Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), who earlier stepped down.
Sources close to Alhaji Seidu indicate that his decision was influenced by the unusually high number of contestants who picked up nomination forms on the first day — signalling an intensely competitive contest ahead.
His withdrawal reduces the confirmed aspirants to 12, down from the initial 14 who expressed interest at the start of the process.
According to the Electoral Commission’s timetable, nominations close today, Sunday, August 24, 2025, while filing is set for Thursday, August 28, 2025, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
The Tamale Central by-election was triggered by the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament and Environment Minister, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who died in a helicopter crash on August 6. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will not field a candidate in honour of the late MP.

A prominent Ghanaian lawyer has called for simplicity and clarity in public discourse as fundamental requirements for strengthening the nation’s democratic institutions.
Samson Lardy Anyenini, speaking to communication students at the University of Education, Winneba, argued that how leaders and citizens exchange information directly impacts trust and accountability in governance. The legal practitioner addressed participants during CoMSSAFest 2025, an annual gathering organized by the institution’s Communication and Media Studies Students Association.
The lawyer acknowledged his audience’s expertise while underlining that communication extends beyond academic study to serve as a cornerstone of democratic practice. He characterized the relationship between effective messaging and democracy as particularly relevant to Ghana’s current political landscape.
According to Anyenini, successful communication requires more than just transmitting information. The message must reach its intended audience with sufficient clarity to ensure genuine understanding. This principle, he suggested, applies whether the exchange occurs between government officials and citizens or within civil society organizations.
The legal expert’s remarks come as Ghana continues to navigate its democratic evolution following recent electoral transitions. His emphasis on straightforward dialogue reflects growing concerns about how complex political messaging can create barriers between institutions and the public they serve.
Trust in democratic processes, Anyenini argued, depends heavily on transparent and accessible information flow. When citizens clearly understand policy decisions and their implications, they become better equipped to participate meaningfully in governance.
The seminar formed part of a weeklong program hosted by the School of Communication and Media Studies. The theme chosen for this year’s event highlights increasing recognition that democracy requires not just formal structures but also effective channels for public engagement.
Students attending the session represented the next generation of media professionals who will shape how Ghanaians receive and interpret political information. Their role in translating complex governance issues into accessible content could prove crucial for democratic participation.
Anyenini’s presentation touched on practical aspects of message delivery, emphasizing that sophistication in communication should never come at the expense of comprehension. This balance becomes particularly important when dealing with legal and policy matters that affect ordinary citizens.
The conversation at UEW reflects broader discussions within Ghana about improving civic engagement. As the country’s democratic institutions mature, questions about how to bridge gaps between technical governance language and public understanding gain urgency.
Media practitioners and legal professionals increasingly recognize their shared responsibility in making democratic processes accessible. The collaboration between these fields could determine how effectively Ghana’s democracy serves its citizens in coming years.
The weeklong CoMSSAFest activities continue to explore various dimensions of communication’s role in society, with particular focus on its intersection with governance and public service.

The Assistant Northern Regional Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Aniwaba K.B. Jeremiah, has condemned recent comments by Abetifi MP and flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, linking the party’s 2024 defeat to “tribal dynamics” around Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s candidature.
In a statement, Mr. Aniwaba described the remarks as “unguided and inappropriate,” arguing that they undermine the NPP’s values of unity, tolerance, and maturity.
He urged the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council (NC) to call Dr. Acheampong to order and demanded an unqualified apology to Ghanaians and the NPP.
According to him, such divisive utterances risk eroding grassroots confidence and weakening party cohesion.
“The NPP has always drawn strength from inclusivity, embracing citizens from all regions and backgrounds. Any statement that seeks to divide us along ethnic lines is counterproductive and detrimental to the party’s fortunes,” he said.
Mr. Aniwaba further encouraged aspirants to emulate former Vice President Dr. Bawumia, commending his humility, inclusive leadership, and commitment to peaceful politics.
He stressed that discipline, respect, and unity remain the surest way for the NPP to sustain the trust of Ghanaians.
African fashion is a vibrant expression of culture, identity, and creativity. For women, African outfits are more than just clothing, they are powerful statements of beauty, elegance, and heritage. Today’s African fashion scene blends traditional elements with modern flair, offering stunning designs for women of all ages and body types.
One of the most iconic styles in African fashion is the Ankara dress. Crafted from bold, colorful wax-print fabric, Ankara dresses come in a variety of designs from flowing maxi gowns to chic peplum tops and pencil skirts. These versatile outfits are perfect for weddings, church, cultural events, and even everyday wear. Their rich patterns and flattering silhouettes make Ankara a standout choice for any occasion.
Kaftans and boubous are also cherished by many African women. These loose, flowing garments provide unmatched comfort and elegance, especially in warmer climates. Often made from luxurious fabrics like silk or chiffon, they are usually embellished with embroidery or beadwork to add a touch of royalty. These outfits are popular for festive gatherings and special events.
Another timeless fabric is Kente, traditionally associated with royalty in Ghana. Today, Kente has become a proud symbol of African heritage and is often worn during weddings, graduations, and cultural ceremonies. Its vibrant, geometric patterns command attention and respect.
Modern African designers are also innovating by incorporating global fashion trends into African wear. Off-shoulder tops, mermaid gowns, jumpsuits, and high-low dresses made with African fabrics are now common sights at fashion shows and social events.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asutifi North in the Ahafo Region, Dr. Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has renovated eight boreholes in rural communities within the constituency to address persistent water shortages.
Speaking to Adom News, Dr. Addo said residents of Yawbrefo, Camp, Asamang, Pobikrom, Panaaba, Ensonyameye, and Gyastech had endured nearly a year without reliable access to potable water because their boreholes had broken down.
According to him, community members often spent 20 to 25 minutes pumping just to fill a single bucket, a struggle he described as unacceptable.
“The situation was worrying, and I felt the need to step in so that the people, especially the farmers, can have access to safe drinking water without going through such struggles,” Dr. Addo explained.
Some residents expressed their gratitude, noting that the intervention has brought relief after almost a year of difficulties. They recalled that both the district assembly and the former MP under the NPP-led government failed to respond to their appeals, leaving them frustrated.

Dr Prempeh further expressed gratitude by quoting a powerful biblical passage, Psalm 124:1-8 NKJV, to credit God for his influence while serving as a minister under the Akufo-Addo administration.
“If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, let ‘Matthew Opoku Prempeh’ now say,” he began, adding, “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us alive, when their wrath was kindled against us.”
The former minister continued, explaining that without God’s help, he and his colleagues would have been “overwhelmed” and “swallowed alive” by their opponents.

An economist at the University of Ghana, Professor Godfred Bokpin, has cautioned that Ghana’s growing fixation on the cedi’s exchange rate could undermine broader economic stability.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, August 23, 2025, Prof. Bokpin said the country was “too fixated on the exchange rate, rather than the fundamentals of the economy.”
He described the recent sharp appreciation of the cedi as “not stability” but “disruption,” explaining that the pace of change left businesses and importers unable to adjust.
“Any sharp appreciation that is not backed by productivity or structural reforms reverses in a matter of months. It is not sustainable,” he warned.
Prof. Bokpin also urged the Bank of Ghana and policymakers not to rely excessively on directives to control market behaviour.
“Don’t use forceful regulations to solve things that must be solved with demand and supply,” he said.
While pointing to structural weaknesses in the economy, he acknowledged some recent interventions, particularly in cocoa pricing. “I see a certain genuine effort on the part of the government to meet the cocoa farmers halfway,” he noted.
He urged that savings from inefficiencies in state enterprises should be redirected to support farmers.
The economist argued that long-term stability, rather than sharp short-term appreciation of the cedi, was needed to safeguard jobs, remittances, exports, and the growth of the private sector.

The comedian, who gained recognition for his role in the popular TV series Efiewura, took to social media to share the exciting news.
In a post shared on Facebook, he narrated how he was inspired to pursue higher studies in geopolitics and diplomacy while listening to Prof. Vladimir Antwi-Danso explain the Russia–Ukraine war on GBC Radio’s Behind the News.
Kwame Dzokoto thanked God for the feat he has chalked and also acknowledged the immense support of business mogul Ibrahim Mahama, who is the brother of President John Dramani Mahama.
“It started as a small dream after listening to Prof. Vladimir Antwi-Danso on GBC Radio’s 8 p.m. Behind the News… explaining the Russia/Ukraine war.
He took geopolitics as a factor and expatriated it to the fact that nations are rational. I was then of the view that Ukraine is a sovereign state and the Russians are being bullied. His explanations exposed my ignorance and encouraged me to study international politics and diplomacy.
“I say thanks to my creator for alerting me to be useful with my time. I can’t forget you, Chief Ibrahim Mahama, for everything. I have nothing to say but ask for strength in health for you,” he wrote.

Kinbu Senior High School, nestled in the heart of Tudu, Accra, is surrounded by the vibrant pulse of commerce.
From dusk to dawn, traders and market women flood the area, calling out to customers and engaging in brisk business. But for the school’s headmistress, Sylvia M. Letcher-Teye, this daily hustle has become more than just background noise. It is now a growing crisis.
In a desperate bid to secure space for trade, many market women and men have turned the school’s entrance into an unofficial ‘shopping centre’.
The noise emanating from this market square has become unbearable for students, and it is gradually affecting their academic performance.
The reason is simple! They are unable to concentrate in class.
Unfortunately, this is not the only challenge faced by both students and school management.
Ghana has experts but lacks the will to fight cybercrime – Expert
According to the headmistress, the battle is no longer just about books and discipline, but about reclaiming the school’s physical space and dignity.
During a recent visit by Korle Klottey MP, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the headmistress disclosed that the market traders have turned the school compound into a dumpsite.
She recounted how the school had to pay GH¢800 to clear a heap of rubbish from the compound. This amount, she said, was an unbudgeted expense.
The headmistress further accused the market women of urinating in and around the school premises, a situation she strongly condemned.
“We suggested to the community members that, at the very least, they should leave the frontage of the school for us, so we can have some sanity around here. They are contributing to our problems,” she told the Korle Klottey MP.
“When they collect their fees, they dump their rubbish into our compound. Every Monday, I call the unit committee member, Fataw, to come and inspect what is happening. There was a time we had to call someone to come and collect the refuse, and we spent over GH¢800 doing so,” the headmistress added.
In response, the Korle Klottey MP urged the headmistress to submit a formal petition detailing the problems faced by the school for swift action to be taken.
“If you don’t mind petitioning me as your Member of Parliament, please do so. There’s a huge security dimension to this, and it goes beyond your personal safety. There’s a lot happening. Please do this as soon as you can,” Dr. Zanetor stated.

Sudan players celebrating their victory over Algeria
Sudan has booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after defeating Algeria 4-2 on penalties in Zanzibar on Saturday evening.
The Falcons of Jediane, coached by Ghanaian tactician Kwesi Appiah, held their nerve in a tense encounter that ended 1-1 after extra time before triumphing in the shoot-out.
The match, played at the Amaan Stadium, was full of grit and drama as both teams fought hard for a place in the last four.
Watch how Kwasi Appiah’s Sudan thrashed Nigeria 4-0
After a goalless first half, Sudan took the lead in the 48th minute when Algerian defender Ayoub Ghezala diverted the ball into his own net following pressure from Musa Hussien.
Algeria, unbeaten in their last ten CHAN matches, responded strongly and deservedly equalized in the 73rd minute through Soufiane Bayazid.
With neither side able to find a winner after 120 minutes, penalties decided the contest.
Sudanese goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja emerged as the hero, saving two spot-kicks from Mehdi Merghem and Zakaria Draoui. Sudan converted four of their attempts through Walieldin Khidir, Mohamed Ahmed Saeed, Ahmed Tabanja, and Mohamed Tia Asad to seal a 4-2 victory.
The result means Sudan has now reached their third CHAN semi-final in history and remains unbeaten in the tournament, having already beaten Nigeria 4-0 and drawn with holders Senegal.

They will face Madagascar on Tuesday, August 26, at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
Algeria, who were finalists in 2022, exit the competition earlier than expected, leaving their quest for a maiden CHAN title still unfulfilled.

Greater Bushenyi Region Police Spokesperson Apollo Tayebwa.
Police in western Uganda’s Sheema District are investigating a suspected case of domestic violence that left a 27-year-old businesswoman dead and her alleged lover hanging from a tree.
Authorities said Allen Turyasiima, a shopkeeper, was hacked to death on Friday by Osward Mushumbusha, a mechanic in his 20s, before he took his own life.
Greater Bushenyi Regional Police spokesperson SP Apollo Tayebwa told reporters that the incident was linked to an extramarital affair that had turned violent.
“Turyasiima had abruptly ended an extra-marital relationship she secretly engaged in with Mushumbusha after realizing that her real husband had known about it,” SP Tayebwa said.
He explained that the suspect stormed the woman’s shop in Kangole Cell, Rugazi Parish, Masheruka Sub-county, and attacked her.
“The suspect, armed with a panga, allegedly entered the deceased’s shop while she was inside, locked it from inside before hacking the deceased to death, and left the scene. Shortly after managing this incident, Sheema District police received distress information about a suspected suicide by hanging at the same address,” Tayebwa noted.
Police and residents later discovered Mushumbusha’s body hanging from a tree branch in a farmland about a kilometre away.
A blood-stained panga believed to have been used in the killing was recovered near his body.
“The scene of the crime was managed as per our police standard procedure and delivered the bodies of the deceased persons to Kabwohe Health Center IV for postmortem examination,” Tayebwa said, adding: “Investigations are still ongoing and we shall provide updates in due course. As Police, we strongly condemn all forms of violence driven by the mindset of lawlessness, anger, and ego.”
Local leaders described the incident as a reflection of rising cases of domestic violence and rejection-related killings in the district.
Jane Asiimwe Muhiindo, the Resident District Commissioner for Sheema, said many families were under social stress that often escalated into violence.
“People are very stressed to the extent that they can’t fight rejection. We are engaging LC1s together with the police to intensify our community policing to engage the masses,” Muhiindo said.
She added, “Most of the murder cases we have encountered in the district are when the two have misunderstandings, especially fighting rejection, and people resort to killing each other. We are engaging LC1s together with religious leaders and other stakeholders at the village level, such that we spot out who the people are we really need to speak to. Basically, it’s to intensify community intelligence such that some of the things that we do, we can prevent before they happen.”
The Member of Parliament for Kpando, Sebastian Deh, who served as a member of the Public Accounts Committee, has underscored the need for authorities to deal ruthlessly with the payment of unearned salaries to civil servants.
He lamented that the persistent challenges with the validation of civil servants for salary payments led to payroll irregularities amounting to GHS 58 million in 2024.
Ankara fashion remains one of the most vibrant and creative styles in 2025. This year, designers are focusing on bold patterns, elegant cuts, and versatile designs that fit every occasion.
One of the top trends is the Ankara corset blouse. This style is fitted at the waist, giving a snatched and flattering shape. It often comes with structured boning and adjustable straps for comfort and style. Off-shoulder and cold shoulder blouses are also in high demand. They give a flirty yet elegant look, perfect for weddings, dinners, or casual outings.
Peplum tops are another favorite. They are fitted at the bodice and flare at the waist, making them suitable for both formal and casual events. Bell sleeves and balloon sleeves add drama to the outfit, creating movement and a unique silhouette.
Tie-front, bow-back, and wrap styles are popular for their adjustable and playful designs. These styles are easy to wear and can be dressed up or down. Necklines are also getting attention, with cowl necks, deep V-necks, and button-down blouses giving variety to fashion lovers.
Asymmetrical cuts and peasant blouses are perfect for those who want a relaxed yet stylish appearance. Bold prints and pattern mixing are a key feature in 2025, with geometric shapes, florals, and abstract motifs creating striking looks.
There is also a strong push for sustainability in Ankara fashion. Many designers are using eco-friendly fabrics, plant-based dyes, and recycled materials. This shift supports local artisans and promotes responsible fashion.
Whether paired with skirts, jeans, or trousers, Ankara blouses remain versatile. They can be worn to the office, to parties, or for casual outings. In 2025, the Ankara blouse is not just a fashion piece but also a statement of culture, creativity, and individuality.
Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has condemned what he described as tribal and religious propaganda being deployed by some of his opponents in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership contest.
Addressing the NPP New York 33rd Anniversary celebration on Sunday, August 24, Dr Bawumia warned that such divisive tactics were dangerous and risked branding the party as exclusionary.
He dismissed claims by some aspirants that the NPP lost the 2024 elections because of his northern and Muslim background, describing such suggestions as both false and desperate.
“The people playing the religion and tribal card clearly do not have a message. That propaganda is not only false but also dangerous for the NPP,” he told the gathering.
To buttress his point, Dr Bawumia cited the Professor Mike Oquaye report, which investigated the party’s 2024 defeat.
The study, he explained, showed that religion and tribe were not factors in voter behaviour.
Instead, nearly 80% of respondents attributed their voting decisions to disappointment with the government.
He added that his own presidential votes in 2024 surpassed those of several Christian parliamentary candidates in the party’s strongholds, disproving the claims of bias.
Dr Bawumia also rejected suggestions that the long-standing Mamprusi-Kusasi conflict in Bawku played a decisive role in the NPP’s defeat.
He presented election data dating back to 1965 showing that the NPP tradition has historically struggled to win seats in the Bawku zone, regardless of its presidential candidate.
“The Bawku conflict was not a factor in the outcome of the 2024 election. The data is clear,” he asserted.
He urged his competitors within the NPP to focus on policies, ideas and proven leadership records rather than attempting to sow disunity.
“If you want to contest me, come with a vision, come with your ideas, come with your track record, come with your integrity and let us decide,” he said.
“Your message cannot be that I am a Muslim, a northerner or a Mamprusi man. That is not the politics of the NPP.”
