Dormaahene Osagyefo Agyemang Badu II (L) has told President Mahama to probe the Nat'l Cathedral hole Dormaahene Osagyefo Agyemang Badu II (L) has told President Mahama to probe the Nat’l Cathedral hole

The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Dr Agyemang Badu II, has made a passionate appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to investigate the National Cathedral project.

Speaking at an engagement as part of the president’s Thank You Tour of the Bono Region, the Dormaahene said that the people responsible for the National Cathedral project must be held accountable because so much money has been spent on the project with nothing to show for it.

He asserted that all the people involved in the National Cathedral project, including the clergy, must be investigated.

“I know you are continuing to do your work… His Excellency, $58 million was spent on the National Cathedral with nothing to show for it. Whether those involved are pastors, chiefs, whoever they are, I don’t understand that. Him, investigate it.

“Don’t let any person deceive you from investigating it. Ghanaians will be disappointed in you if you don’t. His Excellency, investigate it (the National Cathedral project),” the paramount chief said.

He went on to say that if the Ashanti Regional Chairman of his party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi or Chairman One, who is currently in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), can be arrested and investigated, no person should be exempt.

“If my friend, Chairman One, has been arrested and the law is taking its course, pastors are not greater than Chairman One, and chiefs are not better than Chairman. The law must be applied equally,” he reiterated.

ADB MD encourages manufacturers to capitalise on favorable economic climate

Edward Ato Sarpong, Managing Director of ADB Edward Ato Sarpong, Managing Director of ADB

The Managing Director of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), Edward Ato Sarpong, has called on manufacturing companies in Ghana to take full advantage of the current conducive economic landscape to drive innovation, competitiveness, and growth in the sector.

Commenting on the 9th Ghana Manufacturing Awards recently held at the Labadi Beach Hotel, Edward Ato Sarpong highlighted the critical role of manufacturing in achieving inclusive and export-led economic transformation.

“The current economic environment presents unique opportunities for local manufacturers to innovate, expand into export markets, and deepen their value chains,” the MD noted. He added that ADB stands ready to partner with the sector through targeted financing and technical support.

“At ADB, we view manufacturing as an essential partner. The bank has long supported diverse areas within the manufacturing industry, including apparel manufacturing. The agricultural value chain is another key area that is so dear to us as a bank,” he said.

“As a bank with a mandate to promote agribusiness, we are committed to supporting viable manufacturing ventures that drive export potential, empower SMEs, and adopt sustainable production practices. Our tailored financing solutions, technical partnerships, and sector-specific products are designed to help local industries grow beyond borders,” he added.

“We believe that supporting agro-processing and industrial innovation is key to reducing post-harvest losses, increasing export earnings, and strengthening food security,” he further stated.

Edward Ato Sarpong also called for effective collaborations with government, policymakers, and other key stakeholders and consistent investment in skills development, infrastructure, and technology to fully unlock Ghana’s manufacturing potential.

The country has witnessed significant appreciation of its currency (the Cedi) recently, with other government policies such as the Big Push expected to serve as a catalyst to facilitate national development.

ADB plays a key financial intermediation role in the economic development of Ghana.

Watch as Michael Essien visits Black Stars ahead of game against Trinidad and Tobago

From L-R: Michael Essien, Otto Addo and Stephen Appiah From L-R: Michael Essien, Otto Addo and Stephen Appiah

Former Chelsea and Ghana midfield star Michael Essien paid a surprise visit to the Black Stars camp in London ahead of their third-place playoff match against Trinidad and Tobago in the 2025 Unity Cup.

The encounter, set for Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the Gtech Community Stadium, comes after Ghana’s narrow 2-1 defeat to Nigeria in a thrilling semi-final on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

Essien was spotted at the team hotel, sharing a warm reunion with Black Stars head coach Otto Addo and former captain Stephen Appiah.

The trio, iconic figures in Ghanaian football history, were key members of the nation’s historic maiden World Cup appearance in Germany in 2006.

Now walking the path of coaching, Essien is currently on the technical staff at Danish club FC Nordsjælland, while Otto Addo continues to oversee a new generation of Black Stars talents.

Stephen Appiah, meanwhile, plays a key administrative role as vice president of the Black Stars management committee.

Essien’s presence brought an emotional boost to the camp, particularly for the younger players seeking inspiration and guidance from Ghana’s golden generation.

His visit is seen as timely, as the Black Stars aim to bounce back from the disappointment of missing out on a place in the Unity Cup final.

Ghana’s hopes of winning the revived tournament were dashed by a strong Nigerian side in West London.

In a semi-final that lived up to its billing, the Black Stars showed promise but fell short against their fiercest rivals.

Nigeria’s victory sets up a final clash against Jamaica, who edged Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 in their semi-final thanks to a dramatic last-minute penalty from Richard King.

With the title out of reach, Ghana now shifts focus to Saturday’s bronze medal match.

The Unity Cup has served as a platform for Otto Addo to test a younger, experimental squad, and the game against Trinidad and Tobago offers one last chance for fringe players to make a case for future national team selection.

You’re an honorable; Don’t sit on the floor to protest

0

Dormaahene and President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Osagyefo Dr. Fredua Agyemang Badu II, has taken a swipe—albeit humourously—at Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over his dramatic protest at the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) in Accra.

Speaking on the sit-in staged by Minority MPs to demand the release of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi at the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO), the Dormaahene said he was not pleased with Afenyo-Markin’s conduct during the demonstration.

“I’m not saying Ghanaians should not support him, but Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin going to EOCO and sitting on the floor—I wasn’t happy with it. He is [an] honourable. He should let me know when he wants to go to such a place so I can send one of my people to follow him with a seat,” the Dormaahene said with a touch of sarcasm.

The Dormaahene made it clear that while he holds personal admiration for Chairman Wontumi, his support does not extend to bypassing legal processes.

“Chairman Wontumi—I really like him, but even though I like him, I am not saying due process shouldn’t work. If I have done something wrong, the law allows me to be investigated.”

The chief’s comments follow the Minority Caucus’s high-profile sit-in protest on Thursday, May 29, in front of EOCO headquarters. The MPs marched from Parliament to the EOCO offices, blocking traffic and drawing a strong police presence, as they decried what they described as the political persecution of Wontumi and the weaponisation of state institutions.

Chairman Wontumi had been arrested on May 27 in connection with alleged financial irregularities involving the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM BANK). Though EOCO granted him bail, the conditions—including GH₵50 million with two sureties to be justified—had not yet been met at the time of the protest.

If Chairman Wontumi is not released by 6pm, there’ll be problems – MP warns [Video]

0

Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, has issued a strong warning that if the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is not released by 6pm on Friday, it could lead to serious unrest in the country.

“If by 6pm Friday, they fail to release Chairman Wontumi, you will see what will happen in this country—things will escalate and create problems,” he said in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show.

He stressed the importance of state agencies operating within the constitution and the rule of law.

“We have laws in this country that guide what to do when a suspect is arrested. The person must be taken to court and due process followed. We cannot allow anyone to take the law into their own hands.”

When asked about the seriousness of his statement and its consequences, Mr. Baafi said,

“We are ready to die for this country. If the security services want to pick me up for saying this, so be it. We want them to kill all of us if that’s what it takes to protect the democracy of this country. And that is what we will do.”

Mr. Baafi also suggested that some people within the NPP and the country are prepared to make serious sacrifices to protect democracy.

He indicated that they have made thorough preparations and are ready for any eventuality if Wontumi’s detention continues unjustly.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, shortly after leaving the CID headquarters in Accra. His arrest has sparked widespread criticism from within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He remains in custody after failing to meet the bail conditions set at GH₵50 million with two justified sureties on Wednesday, amid reports of ill health.

On Thursday, members of the Minority in Parliament and some NPP supporters staged a protest at EOCO’s headquarters, describing the bail conditions as excessive and unreasonable.

His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, revealed earlier that some individuals who initially agreed to act as sureties later backed out after their names were made public.

Mahama slams NPP over “deceptive” Sunyani hospital upgrade

0

President John Dramani Mahama has criticised what he described as the deceptive elevation of the Sunyani Regional Hospital to Teaching Hospital status under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

Speaking during his Thank-you tour of the Bono Region on Friday, May 30, the President stated that the facility lacked the infrastructure and legal backing to merit the designation.

He further announced his government’s move to legally upgrade the hospital with immediate effect.

“The previous government announcement on the upgrade of the Sunyani Teaching Hospital into a teaching hospital was not backed by any legal legislation. We have corrected that. The Council of State has approved the board, and collaboration with UENR is underway to begin the training of health professionals to serve the Bono, East, Ahafo, and beyond.”

The President also announced the establishment of a medical school at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR).

“UENR has suffered stagnation due to inadequate investment. The new NDC administration is going to change that. One of the first steps taken by my administration has been to uncap the GETFund. This will release more resources to the fund to undertake critical infrastructure projects in all our educational institutions.

“The GETFund has recently conducted an infrastructure audit of the UENR university and will soon commence construction of additional facilities to support the establishment of a fully-fledged medical school.”

Dr Bawumia fails to secure bail for Wontumi, describes GH¢50 million bail as ‘onerous’

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Bernard Antwi Boasiako Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Bernard Antwi Boasiako

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed disappointment after efforts to meet the bail conditions of GH¢50 million for the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, proved unsuccessful. Wontumi is currently in custody at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in connection with an ongoing criminal investigation.

Addressing the press on Friday, May 30, 2025, Dr Bawumia revealed that arrangements to visit Chairman Wontumi had failed.

“We had made arrangements to come and see our Chairman Wontumi, who was arrested and has been held in custody by EOCO. We wanted to check on him and see how he was doing. All necessary preparations were made,” he stated.

Dr Bawumia also criticised the bail conditions imposed on Wontumi.

“I must put on record that the bail conditions set for Chairman Wontumi, GH¢50 million, are very onerous. I don’t know how many people in Ghana own property worth that amount. It appears designed to delay his release,” he remarked.

He further expressed dissatisfaction over being denied access to Wontumi despite prior notice.

“We are very disappointed in our inability to see him, especially after making the necessary arrangements. We’ve communicated our disappointment and will continue efforts to ensure we get to see him,” he added.

The former Vice President also appealed for calm among party supporters.

“I want to plead with all of you to remain calm as we work behind the scenes to ensure his release. I believe we will succeed, but we must remain peaceful and not take the law into our own hands. It’s important that we follow due process and ensure Chairman Wontumi is released safe and sound,” he urged.

Chairman Wontumi was taken into custody by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after undergoing interrogation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

He is currently under investigation for alleged involvement in multiple criminal offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, has disclosed that a second phase of the investigation reportedly links Wontumi to a broader international organised crime syndicate.

Although EOCO granted him bail of GH¢50 million, his legal team has yet to meet the conditions required for his release.

Invest in Electrochem to advance Ghana’s industrialisation drive – Kofi Bentil to government

0

Dr Daniel McKorley, founder of Electrochem Ghana Limited Dr Daniel McKorley, founder of Electrochem Ghana Limited

The Senior Vice President of policy think tank Imani Africa, Kofi Bentil, has urged the Mahama-led government to invest in Electrochem Ghana Limited, a fully Ghanaian-owned salt production company founded by business mogul Daniel McKorley.

In a statement published on his website, Bentil underscored Electrochem’s significant contribution to Ghana’s GDP and its impact on job creation for the youth in Ada.

He commended Electrochem for its transformation of the Songhor Lagoon into a multi-million-dollar salt production hub – the largest of its kind in the Greater Accra Region.

“With an investment exceeding $88 million, the project currently produces 650,000 metric tonnes of salt annually, with plans to scale up to one million metric tonnes by 2024 and two million by 2027.

“Under the leadership of Mr. Daniel McKorley, Electrochem has not only rejuvenated the lagoon but has also generated over 3,000 jobs for the local community,” the statement noted.

Bentil has appealed to the government to invest in this wholly Ghanaian enterprise to accelerate industrialisation, optimise local resource utilisation, and expand employment opportunities for the youth.

“Electrochem’s Salt Revolution: A Ghanaian Triumph That Deserves National Support”

By Kofi Bentil, Imani.

After hearing numerous accounts about the Electrochem project, my colleagues and I at Imani took the initiative to personally engage with the management of Electrochem Ghana Limited. We visited the facilities and the surrounding area to assess the situation firsthand. What we discovered was nothing short of impressive.

Electrochem, a wholly Ghanaian-owned company under the McDan Group, has transformed the Songhor Lagoon into Africa’s largest industrial salt production site. With an investment exceeding $88 million, the project currently produces 650,000 metric tons of salt annually, with plans to increase this to one million metric tons by 2024 and two million by 2027.

This achievement is particularly remarkable considering the historical challenges faced in harnessing the potential of the Songhor Lagoon. Previous governments had attempted to develop the area for over five decades without success. Under the leadership of Mr. Daniel McKorley, Electrochem has not only revitalized the lagoon but also created over 3,000 jobs for the local community.

Furthermore, Electrochem has launched a 1,000-acre out-grower scheme, involving seven community groups, to promote sustainable salt mining practices and provide additional employment opportunities . The company has also constructed over 70 community salt pans at its own expense, facilitating traditional mining activities for local residents .

Despite these commendable efforts, Electrochem has faced unwarranted criticism and opposition. However, a recent investigation by The Fourth Estate revealed that many of the negative narratives were unfounded, with local miners regaining access to the lagoon and resuming their traditional activities without hindrance .

This project exemplifies the potential of indigenous entrepreneurship to drive national development. If this were a foreign investment, it would undoubtedly receive widespread acclaim. Instead, it is a testament to the vision and determination of a Ghanaian businessman who has not only revitalized a vital resource but also uplifted an entire community.

It is imperative that the government, local leaders, and all Ghanaians rally behind Electrochem and Mr. Dan McKorley. Their success is our success. Supporting this initiative will not only bolster our economy but also position Ghana as a leader in sustainable industrial salt production.

Let us unite in support of this remarkable project and ensure its continued success for the benefit of all Ghanaians.

Ablakwa denies claims of new recruitment at Ghana’s Embassy in Washington D.C.

0

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has dismissed reports suggesting that new individuals have been recruited to work at Ghana’s embassy in Washington D.C., USA.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Ablakwa commended the newly reconstituted diplomatic team for their outstanding performance as the embassy resumed full operations.

“From the briefing I have received, our reopened embassy in Washington D.C. issued over 800 visas on the first day of resumption,” he revealed. “I expect this level of efficiency, professionalism, and integrity to continue.”

He described the team as a “fresh group of seasoned diplomats,” crediting them with spearheading a successful systems overhaul and implementing institutional reforms to restore the embassy’s credibility and service delivery.

“This is a testament to the fact that Ghanaian diplomats excel when provided with the right ecosystem and leadership,” Ablakwa noted.

He firmly rejected claims that the restructuring involved the hiring of new staff to replace previous personnel.

“Contrary to false and baseless claims, there have been no new recruitments to replace lost jobs in our Washington embassy — we have an adequate stock of distinguished and astute diplomats to lead ongoing reforms,” he clarified.

Ablakwa emphasized that the restructuring is part of a broader national agenda aimed at restoring integrity and improving service delivery across Ghana’s foreign missions.

“This cannot be reduced to ‘jobs for the boys,’” he stressed. “It is part of a patriotic, consequential reset agenda.”

‘Celebrating mediocrity is hurting our music industry’

Dancehall musician, Stonebwoy Dancehall musician, Stonebwoy

Dancehall musician Stonebwoy has expressed his displeasure with the way some Ghanaians habitually criticise entertainment personalities in a negative manner.

In a video shared on Instagram on May 30, 2025, Stonebwoy urged Ghanaians to stop celebrating mediocrity, warning that it is having a detrimental impact on the creative arts industry.

“In the Ghanaian industry, there is a need for a mindset shift. We need that mental shift because celebrating mediocrity is one of the things hurting our industry.

“If we want to progress, then we have to do progressive things—but we’re not mentally embracing the changes that would make such progress possible,” he stated.

Using Nigerians as an example, the Jejereje hitmaker urged Ghanaians to support creatives rather than sabotage them.

“There is a need for us to speak positively about the strides we make toward progress, rather than immediately comparing or downplaying them. Before any Nigerian artiste in my time would win a Grammy, they were already doing the groundwork.

“You’d hear a narrative like, ‘If it wasn’t for Davido, Chris Brown wouldn’t have won a Grammy.’ I love that kind of narrative. But here in Ghana, I humbly say we often create narratives that pull us backward. We have a P.H.D. syndrome—Pull Him Down. But what if we change that to ‘Pull Him There?’” he added.

If Wontumi can be detained, what about the rest of us? – NPP questions

0

Alexander Agyare is the NPP Member of Parliament for Kade Alexander Agyare is the NPP Member of Parliament for Kade

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Kade, Alexander Agyare, has bemoaned the continued detention of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of his party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

In a write-up sighted by GhanaWeb, Alexander Agyare asserted that the arrest and detention of the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman bears semblance to an autocracy and not a democracy.

He wondered how ordinary citizens are going to be treated if Chairman Wontumi, whom he described as a “high-profile citizen”, can be dealt with in such a manner.

“The Minority’s march to EOCO was not just about Chairman Wontumi, it was about defending the rule of law and exposing abuse of power. His arrest was excessive, his detention unlawful, and the denial of legal access unacceptable.

“Ghana is a democracy, not a dictatorship. We don’t enforce laws with brute force and political bias. If a high-profile citizen can be treated this way, what hope does the ordinary Ghanaian have?” he queried.

“As a Member of Parliament, I strongly condemn the use of excessive force, demand an investigation into the officers involved, and urge our security services to act with professionalism and respect for rights. Ghana needs justice, not drama. Law, not intimidation. Peace, not fear,” the MP’s write-up concludes.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested and detained by EOCO after reporting to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

He was granted bail set at GH¢50 million with two sureties, both to be justified, after hours of interrogation.

Initial reports indicated that he was unable to meet the bail conditions, resulting in an extended stay in EOCO custody for an additional night.

However, Accra-based JoyNews reports that the politician has, on Thursday, May 29, 2025, managed to secure one surety, with only one remaining to fully satisfy the bail requirements.

The Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem Sai, has disclosed that Chairman Wontumi is under investigation for multiple criminal offences.

These include fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering.

In a statement posted on social media on Thursday, May 29, 2025, Justice Srem Sai revealed that Wontumi, who has been in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) since Tuesday, is also implicated in a second strand of investigation linked to a broader international organised crime scheme.

The Deputy Attorney General emphasised that EOCO is collaborating closely with international law enforcement partners to probe this complex network of alleged criminal activities.

Set realistic KPIs for assembly members – Ofosu Ampofo to MMDCEs

0

The Policy Adviser for Political Affairs at the Office of the Vice President, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has called on Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to establish realistic Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to assess the work of assembly members.

Speaking at the maiden interface meeting with the 33 Municipal and District Chief Executives in the Eastern Region, Mr. Ofosu Ampofo said the move would ensure accountability and promote development at the local level.

He noted that the government has allocated sufficient funds for the payment of monthly allowances to assembly members to empower them to function effectively.

Mr. Ofosu Ampofo urged MMDCEs to create a harmonious working environment for assembly members and to commit to the provisions of local governance laws. He also encouraged them to emulate the humility and leadership qualities of President John Dramani Mahama.

“Being appointed by the president means you must reflect his image—his humility, knowledge, and deep understanding of governance. Take time to study the Local Government Act and understand your role in driving development,” he said.

Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Awatey also addressed the gathering, urging MMDCEs to engage stakeholders to identify sustainable avenues for internally generated funds (IGF), boost local revenue, and ensure transparency in resource use.

“As you assume office, public expectations are high. Citizens are looking for improved sanitation, quality education and healthcare, job creation, and effective governance. Your leadership will directly impact lives, so strategic thinking and innovation are critical,” she stated.

NPP currently has no leadership; where is the Chairman? – Nyaho-Nyaho Tamakloe quizzes over Wontumi arrest

0

A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho-Nyaho Tamakloe, has criticised the party’s leadership over its handling of the arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Reacting to how the arrest of the Chairman has been handled so far, he declared that the party currently “has no leadership.”

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews on Friday, Dr. Tamakloe expressed dismay at the silence and inaction of the party’s national executives following Wontumi’s detention by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO).

Wontumi was arrested on Wednesday and remains in custody after being denied bail, with EOCO setting bail conditions at GH₵50 million—a figure NPP supporters have described as politically motivated and excessive. The arrest has sparked protests from party members, who stormed the EOCO headquarters on Thursday demanding his release.

Dr. Tamakloe, a former Ghana Football Association (GFA) chairman and seasoned political figure, suggested that the party’s leadership vacuum was emboldening internal divisions and weakening its position.

His comments come amid growing tension within the NPP, with some members accusing EOCO of targeting Wontumi for political reasons. However, others, including the Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, have called for due process to be followed.

Meanwhile, security has been heightened at the NIB headquarters where Wontumi has been moved.

Creating A Special Haven: The Journey Of The Anglo Special School For Children With Intellectual Disabilities

0

Emma and the special kids

“My journey with children with intellectual disabilities began in 2012 at the Autism Awareness Care Center in Kokomlemle, now located in Haasto.

“I quickly developed a deep bond with them through regular visits to the center” – Emma Sallah, Founder of Anglo Special School.

Emma Sallah mentioned that her connection became even more significant after her mother passed away, prompting her to move to Keta to heal alongside a childhood friend. “While attending church in Keta, I noticed children with disabilities in the community, which sparked my curiosity about their educational opportunities. Upon inquiring at the local assembly, I discovered that only a few privileged children had access to education and those who did had to travel long distances to Hohoe for schooling,” he said.

This discovery ignited a passion for making a difference. In October 2018, Emma Sallah launched the Anglo Special School, fulfilling her long-held dream of positively impacting society. The school caters specifically for children with intellectual disabilities, including those with autism and Down syndrome.

Operating as a day center, the school welcomes children each morning and provides them with free snacks and lunch, as it understands that many parents face financial hardship, some of whom have special needs themselves. In addition to its education services, the school organises workshops for teachers from mainstream schools, conducts health screenings, and facilitates donations.

The initial funding for this project came from an organic seafood business that Emma operated, where he packaged and sold products in Accra. Through these initiatives, children with intellectual disabilities have participated in competitions in Accra, allowing them to interact with a large community of individuals facing similar challenges.

As a result of these experiences, some students have even learned household chores that they previously struggled with. One achievement chalked involved assisting a student whose mother had special needs. We established a charcoal business for her, empowering her towards independence.”

The school organized a community health screening event that provided participants with essential medications and treated mosquito nets for malaria prevention. One of our students who initially could not speak has made remarkable progress in communication over the years. This transformation was recognised by the Chief of Anglo, who subsequently granted us land to build our school. Despite these successes, we face considerable challenges,” he mentioned.

Currently operating from his porch, Emma Sallah mentions that finding suitable accommodation for the school remains a primary concern, saying, “funding is another hurdle; while I work alongside dedicated volunteers, I strive to motivate them despite limited resources.”

Stigma also poses a significant challenge, as individuals working with children with intellectual disabilities often face negative labeling. Furthermore, accessibility issues prevent some children from reaching our current location.

Looking ahead, Emma Sallah’s primary goal is to establish a dedicated school building and enroll more students. “We are committed to helping each child reach their highest potential and continue to advocate for inclusivity and understanding within our community.” Through our collective efforts and unwavering dedication, we aspire to create a brighter future for children with intellectual disabilities in Keta and beyond.”

Victoria Gadzekpo stated that she nominated Victoria Gadzekpo for the MTN Heroes of Change award after learning about the special needs school she established in Keta. As someone with experience managing special needs children, I was impressed by her dedication and the impact of her work.

She stated that the community has spoken highly of her efforts, noting that the school provides a welcoming space for children with special needs to feel accepted and be themselves. The chief’s gesture of donating land for the school’s expansion is a testament to her commitment and the value the community places on her work.

Assemblman for Keta, James Ocloo Akorli, also praised Victoria’s work, highlighting the significance of her school in the community and her dedication to helping children with special needs.

Akpene Adzikah, a mother of a child with special needs, shares her heartfelt gratitude towards Emma’s special school. Her son had previously struggled in a regular school setting, exhibiting challenging behaviors such as stubbornness and aggression.

However, since joining Emma’s special school, Akpene’s son has made remarkable progress. He has stopped his aggressive behavior and acquired basic English vocabulary, enabling him to communicate effectively with those around him.

0

By Joyce Danso, GNA

Accra, May 30, GNA – A 41-year-old man who was nabbed in connection with 32 vacuum-sealed plant like substances suspected to be cannabis has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Joey Mclaren Hammond is facing charges of conspiracy to commit crime namely, exportation of narcotic drugs without license issued by the Minister responsible for Health, two counts of unlawful possession or control of narcotic drugs with lawful authority.

Hammond’s plea was not taken by the court.

Browne-Frater Chyna Jade is a 22-year-old British national, the first suspect who had earlier on been remanded by another Circuit Court.

Prosecution led by Hilda Craig, Principal State Attorney, prayed the court to remand Hammond.

Defence counsel opposed the prosecution’s prayer, saying Hammond should be admitted to bail.

The Trial Judge, Mr. Isaac Addo, held that looking at the nature of the accusation against Hammond and the severity of punishment, he would decline bail and remanded Hammond into Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) custody to reappear on June 16, 2025.

The facts before the court are that witnesses are authorised officers of NACOC stationed at Terminal three of Kotoka International Airport in Accra.

The first suspect, Browne-Frater Chyna Jade, is a 22-year-old British national holding a United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland passport.

Jade was scheduled to travel on British Airways flight BA 2068 from Accra to London.

The second suspect, Joey Mclaren Hammond, is a Ghanaian businessman residing in East Legon, Accra.

The NACOC received intelligence from its foreign counterparts concerning a drug trafficking syndicate engaged in smuggling Thai-grown and processed cannabis into the Unted Kingdom.

As a result, the first suspect, Jade, became a person of interest and was subsequently placed on the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) Stop List.

On May 18, 2025, at about 6:40 p.m., GIS officials apprehended the first suspect and handed her over to NACOC officers at the Departure Hall of the airport.

During an initial interrogation, she indicated that she had checked in one suitcase, the contents of which she claimed to be unaware.

Acting on suspicion, NACOC officers traced the checked-in suitcase, which had already been loaded onto the aircraft, and had it offloaded.

Jade was then escorted to the NACOC Office, where the suitcase bearing a baggage tag in her name was opened in her presence. Officers discovered thirty-two (32) vacuum-sealed slabs of a plantlike substance suspected to be narcotics. The total weight of the seized substance was approximately 17. 92 kilograms, with an estimated street value of USD 232,960.

A field test conducted on a sample of the substance turned positive result for delta g tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component in cannabis.

Jade was arrested on suspicion of attempting to export narcotic drugs and was taken to the NACOC Headquarters for further investigation.

Jade, during interrogation, said she had been invited to Ghana by her boyfriend. known only as “Joey.”

She further claimed that on the day of her departure, Joey had packed her suitcase in her absence.

When quizzed further about its contents, she was allegedly told it contained Kpoo Keke alcoholic drink, Alomo Bitters, and assorted spices.

She denied any knowledge of the narcotic substances discovered in her luggage.

Efforts were initiated to locate and apprehend the individual identified as “Joey” to assist with ongoing investigations.

The seized narcotic exhibits were sealed in the presence of the suspect and are to be forwarded to the Ghana Standards Authority for analysis.

On Monday, May 26, 2025, Joey, previously declared at large, was arrested and detained in lawful custody.

He was later identified as Mclaren Hammond who voluntarily presented himself to NACOC in the company of his counsel.

During an identification parade, Jade identified Browne Frater as the one who handed her the intercepted suitcase.

Hammond admitted to knowing Jade, and he briefly hosted her in Tse-Addo, but claimed he had no further contact with her thereafter.

The same day, Hammond was arrested and NACOC officers conducted a search at his residence in East Legon, leading to the recovery of assorted weapons, seven wraps of cannabis, and four (4) partly smoked pieces of cannabis from his bedroom.

A black Range Rover vehicle with registration number GE 1435-25 was also impounded.

During an on-the-spot interrogation, Hammond admitted to using cannabis for recreational purposes.

Investigations are still ongoing.

Minority returns to Parliament after protest over Wontumi’s bail conditions

0

The Minority Caucus in Parliament made a swift return to the House on Friday, 30 May 2025, after staging a brief walkout in protest of the bail conditions imposed on Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday, 27 May, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and was later granted bail set at GH₵50 million.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its allies have strongly criticised the bail amount, describing it as excessive and politically motivated.

On Thursday, 29 May, Minority MPs, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, walked out of Parliament in protest. Afenyo-Markin condemned the bail conditions as unjust.

“We are not going to ask for any property. We don’t have GH₵50 million. Where is he going to get it from? They must do the right thing, and we will not be part of any proceedings until then,” he told the House before exiting.

He also pledged full support for Chairman Wontumi, stating, “We will stand with him. If it means we have to spend nights with him, we will do so.”

However, the following day, members of the Minority Caucus returned to the chamber and participated in parliamentary proceedings. Although no official explanation was given for the sudden return, it suggests possible behind-the-scenes negotiations or reassurances that helped ease the standoff.

Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, confirmed on Thursday through his official Facebook page that Chairman Wontumi is under investigation for several serious crimes. These include fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

“Suspect Bernard Antwi Boasiako, a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various criminal offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering,” Srem-Sai stated.

He added that EOCO is leading the investigation and has already begun efforts to recover assets suspected to be proceeds of crime.

“Sinare Should Bury His Head in Shame” – NPP’s Rashid Fires Back at Former Ambassador

0

Rashid Salifu, a communicator for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, has taken aim at Alhaji Said Sinare, a former Ghanaian ambassador, accusing him of compromising his principles in a political game that ultimately left him behind as reported by ModernGhana.

Sinare, who once served as Ambassador to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, recently criticized former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over his economic commentary.

But Rashid believes the former envoy has lost credibility, claiming he abandoned his integrity and the Zongo communities in a failed attempt to gain favour within the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Alhaji Sinare should bury his head in shame,” Rashid said in a radio interview, alleging that Sinare’s efforts to discredit Bawumia were aimed at winning political relevance within the NDC — a reward he never received.

According to Rashid, Sinare actively campaigned against Bawumia, inciting division within Muslim communities in the run-up to the 2024 elections.

Yet, when it came time for recognition, he was allegedly ignored.

He described Sinare as a cautionary tale for political loyalists who sacrifice long-standing values for uncertain rewards. “You are not a hero. You’re a political warning sign,” Rashid stated.

The NPP communicator’s remarks shows growing tensions between the parties ahead of the next electoral cycle.

While Sinare remains silent on the backlash, Rashid’s comments shows internal divisions and frustrations within Ghana’s political system.

In his final jab, Rashid advised political actors: “It is better to stand with honour in defeat than to stoop for a victory that forgets you.”

Tobacco harm: Comprehensive regulatory framework needed to protect children

0

By Albert Allotey

Accra, May 30, GNA – Ms Rhoda Mingle, the Communication Manager of the Vision for Accelerated Sustainable Development – Ghana (VAST-Ghana) has appealed to the government to provide a comprehensive regulatory framework to protect children from new tobacco and nicotine products.

She said: “Our responsibility is to prioritise evidence-based public health measures that truly protect communities, especially vulnerable populations, from tobacco-related harm.

“If we wait, we will lose another generation to nicotine addiction. But if we act now, if we invest in youth-focused awareness and hold the industry accountable, we can change the story.”

Ms Mingle made the appeal in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency as part of the commemoration of the World No Tobacco Day tomorrow, May 31, 2025.

She stated: “I am not just making a policy recommendation, I am making a plea for our children, country, and future.”

She said the tobacco industry’s primary objective remained unchanged: profit maximization, not public health protection or genuine harm reduction, adding, “this fundamental truth must guide our policy decisions and regulatory approaches.”

The Manager said the World Health Organisation (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control outlined urgent steps to ban all forms of advertising, promotion, and sponsorship, particularly on digital platforms where youth are most exposed.

The rest are to strengthen enforcement to curb illicit sales and online distribution, safeguard policymaking from tobacco industry interference, constant public sensitization programmes in schools, markets, among others on the harmful effects of these products, and to collaborate across all stakeholder levels and institutions.

Ms Mingle said according to the most recent Global Youth Tobacco Survey conducted in Ghana in 2017, 4.9 per cent students use e-cigarettes while 6.5 per cent continued to smoke traditional tobacco products.

“This nationally representative school-based survey, jointly supported by the WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service, provides critical insights into youth tobacco use patterns in the country,” she stated.

She said these findings highlighted concerning trends in youth nicotine consumption, particularly the emerging popularity of electronic cigarettes while traditional smoking among adolescents remained a public health issue.

“Disturbingly, more girls than boys reported using e-cigarettes and that online marketing, flavoured options like strawberry ice or vanilla swirl, and peer normalization are fuelling experimentation.

“Meanwhile, public awareness of the health risks remains dangerously low, which the tobacco industry knows and is exploiting this gap,” she stated.

Ms Mingle noted that the growing experimentation with and use of e-cigarettes signal a shift in youth preferences and an expanding front in tobacco control challenges.

She pointed out that according to the U.S. CDC, e-cigarettes contain toxic substances such as acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, and acrolein, all linked to cancer, lung damage, and cardiovascular disease reinforcing.

She said the WHO has asserted that these products have not delivered a net public health benefit, but instead, threaten to renormalize smoking, and undo decades of progress.

The Manager said the lack of awareness about the risks associated with these new tobacco and nicotine products was one of the biggest tools the industry used to recruit lifelong customers.

“Many users, especially young people, don’t even know these devices contain highly addictive nicotine, nor do they realize the extent of harm associated with their use. It’s like a virus that keeps mutating to escape detection, while continuing to destroy from within,” she noted.

She said, “We need a comprehensive regulatory framework: one that bans advertising, restricts flavourings that attract children, and implements age-verification systems across all sales platforms, both physical and digital.”

“So, this World No Tobacco Day, I am not just making a policy recommendation, I am making a plea. For our children, country, and future,” Ms Mingle stated.

She emphasised that tobacco and nicotine addiction remain the leading preventable causes of death worldwide, killing over seven million people annually.

“But the new frontier is more deceptive, more technologically advanced, and more socially normalized. Let’s not be fooled by sleek branding and flavour names.

“Let’s see through the vapor and commit to action that safeguards public health, especially the health of the younger generation and vulnerable populations,” she advised.

I felt set up, they didn’t protect us – Gisela on why she left Rants Bants and Confessions podcast

Gisela Ama Amponsah is a Ghanaian social media influencer play videoGisela Ama Amponsah is a Ghanaian social media influencer

Ghanaian influencer Gisela Ama Amponsah has stated that she left the Rants Bants and Confessions podcast because the producers failed to protect her.

Gisela, who co-hosted the second season of the show alongside her best friend Ama Burland and socialite Efia Odo, said she felt unprotected and used by the show’s producers, Glitch Africa.

In a Q&A session with Ama Burland on Let’s Do Drink, aired on The Creative Inc. YouTube channel on May 29, 2025, Gisela explained that the environment on the podcast became toxic for her.

She said she felt exposed and unprotected by the production team and decided to leave for the sake of her peace of mind.

“There was just too much drama and I wasn’t feeling protected by the producers. They put me out there to be pounced on by predators, I felt I was set up a lot,” she stated.

According to her, there were moments when she tried to take control of certain situations, but the producers didn’t allow her to. She claimed that it became clear the producers were more interested in views and online engagement than the well-being of the hosts.

“There were a few times I tried to control certain situations and they won’t allow me. To me it seems what they cared about was the views, they didn’t care about the mental health or the people on the show so I was like you know what, I don’t even need them,” she said.

Gisela also gave specific examples of moments when she felt disrespected. One such incident happened during an episode that discussed galamsey and protests.

She recalled being criticised online for scratching her leg, something she considered normal, only to realise that the producers had zoomed the camera on that exact moment.

“There was this episode where we spoke about galamsey and the protest and I had so many people coming at me because I was scratching my leg, I am a human being, I will itch, and they zoomed into that bit,” she explained.

She also shared another incident where she and Ama Burland were gossiping about someone on set. Gisela noted that she whispered the person’s name, but the camera zoomed in on her mouth, making it easy for viewers to read her lips and identify the person they were talking about.

“There was another instance where we were gossiping about somebody on set and you were asking me who I was talking about and I whispered the person’s name to you and they zoomed into my mouth to show who I was talking about,” she said.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed his support for the upcoming National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, scheduled for July 1, 2025, emphasising the importance of grounding governance in values such as humanity, unity, and inclusiveness.

Commending former President John Dramani Mahama for initiating the event, Kufuor described Republic Day as a momentous occasion.

“Republic Day marks the day Ghana appointed its first president. It is not a day to be taken lightly. If President Mahama, in his faith, sees this not only as a time to commemorate Ghana becoming a republic but also to offer thanksgiving to God and pray for greater prosperity, then I believe he is right, and I support him. We look forward to the celebration,” Kufuor said.

President Mahama has announced that Ghana will now observe July 1, traditionally celebrated as Republic Day, as the country’s official National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.

Up to 30% of cedi depreciation caused by dollar hoarding, speculation – GAB

0

John Awuah is the President of the Ghana Association of Bankers John Awuah is the President of the Ghana Association of Bankers

The CEO of the Ghana Association of Banks, John Awuah, has stated that the cedi’s performance in recent years has largely been driven by speculation rather than actual market forces.

According to him, some individuals deliberately hoard dollars to profit from the depreciation of the local currency.

He estimated that speculation accounts for about 20 to 30% of the cedi’s depreciation.

“I once stated, with no proper research behind it, that I could clearly see that the extent of speculation in the currency’s movement was between 20 and 30%,” he said.

“So, if there is a depreciation, about 20 to 30% of that is not backed by any effective transaction, but rather by people who are simply playing the currency for temporary price adjustments to profit from the movement,” he was quoted by myjoyonline.com.

Awuah explained that the depreciation of the cedi makes it more attractive to those seeking to exploit the situation for financial gain.

“If the currency is able to hold its own, what you are doing is making that trade unattractive. Now, the cedi is more attractive. So, people holding cedis are looking for cedi-denominated investments because the currency is not depreciating as aggressively as we’ve seen in the past,” he said.

However, he cautioned that significant appreciation of the cedi should not be overly celebrated if it is not sustainable.

“We should not be too excited about a significant appreciation. That is not exactly what the business community is looking for. The business community wants predictability, not a situation where the currency moves from GH¢5 to the dollar today, GH¢10 tomorrow, and GH¢9 the next time,” he added.

Awuah also expressed some uncertainty about the long-term stability of the currency.

“I don’t want to say ‘wait and see,’ because I have no reason to doubt the currency’s ability to hold its own. But coming down to single digits, I’m not sure,” he said.

The Lion and the Mosquito Set for Epic Presidential Showdown -Scott Edward Agyemang writes

0

Ghana’s political landscape is bracing for an extraordinary face-off in the 2028 general elections, one that promises to be as symbolic as it is historic. In what many analysts are calling a “Clash of the Beasts,” the presidential race is shaping up to feature a battle between the resilient and agile mosquito and the bold and powerful lion.

The mosquito is none other than Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the longest-serving National Executive of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), affectionately and sometimes mockingly called “General Mosquito” by Ghanaians. Known for his sharp tongue, strategic wit and grassroots appeal, Asiedu Nketiah seems to be emerging as the front-runner in the NDC’s upcoming presidential primaries who may face-off notable contenders like Haruna Iddrisu, the seasoned Tamale South MP and Minister for Education; Julius Debrah, the current Chief of Staff; and Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, the respected former Finance Minister.

Asiedu Nketiah’s edge stems from decades of dedication to the NDC, his unmatched organizational skills and his ability to resonate with both the party base and the ordinary Ghanaian. Despite his lean physique and unassuming appearance, he has time and again proven to be a political tactician, often underestimated by rivals but always emerging with a sting. He may look fragile but underestimate General Mosquito at your own peril. He is always buzzing where it matters most in the minds and hearts of the grassroots.

Indeed, the mosquito may be small, but it is ever-present, persistent and impossible to ignore. Asiedu Nketiah’s knack for circumnavigating political storms and his reputation for standing firm in the face of opposition have made him a symbol of tenacity. His likely victory in the NDC primaries would mark a dramatic turn in the party’s strategy which could lean fully into experience, loyalty and probably a populist appeal.

On the other side of the political divide, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) appears ready to crown its lion, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong as the party’s presidential candidate for 2028. Agyapong, the maverick businessman and outspoken former Member of Parliament for Assin Central has increasingly consolidated power within the party and that is outpacing other potential aspirants.

Known for his fearlessness, booming voice and fierce loyalty to party and country, Kennedy Agyapong is the embodiment of strength and dominance, the classic traits of a lion. His 2024 presidential primary run, although falling short, endeared him to a significant section of the party’s youth and grassroots supporters who view him as a no-nonsense leader capable of taking decisive action. The lion does not ask permission before it roars and similarly, Kennedy does not wait for cues; he defines the moment.

His reputation as a straight-talker and defender of truth has earned him admirers and critics alike. But few doubt his influence, wealth and raw political power. With his growing appeal, especially among those frustrated with the status quo, many believe that 2028 is his moment.

If the two men secure their respective party nominations, Ghanaians will witness one of the most symbolic and intriguing electoral contests in the nation’s history: a lion squaring off against a mosquito.

The metaphor is rich. The lion, strong and dominant, roams with authority, staking its claim boldly. The mosquito, nimble and strategic, strikes at unexpected moments, often leaving even the mighty unsettled. The 2028 election, if it becomes this duel, would not just be about personalities but it would be about political styles, strategies and philosophies.

Kennedy Agyapong would likely campaign on a platform of strength, patriotism and economic nationalism and would ultimately promise to deal ruthlessly with corruption and inefficiency. Asiedu Nketiah, on the other hand, would likely lean into his record of loyalty, grassroots empowerment and democratic resilience and he will pitch himself as the defender of the ordinary Ghanaian.

With both men carrying immense influence within their parties and among sections of the electorate, the lion-versus-mosquito showdown is set to redefine Ghanaian politics. Whilst lions may rule the savannah, mosquitoes have been known to interrupt even the king’s slumber and come 2028, Ghanaians may have to choose between the roar of strength and the sting of strategy.

May God protect us to witness this epic showdown.

‘A third term for Mahama will never happen’ – Titus Glover

0

Former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, has dismissed any alleged prospects of President John Mahama seeking a third term in office, describing any such ambition as unconstitutional.

Speaking to JoyNews at the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Mr Titus Glover accused President Mahama of orchestrating efforts to undermine the judiciary as a prelude to amending the constitution to extend his tenure.

“We want to assure President Mahama that he has been given the power to govern,” he said.

“But all the orchestration he is doing to get rid of the Chief Justice is a way of trying to amend the constitution. I have said it before, and I will repeat it: President Mahama’s third term will never happen.”

The former minister criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he described as a campaign of vilification against the Chief Justice, pointing to a flood of public commentary on the charges levelled against her.

“Today, she has filed an affidavit, and all she is asking for is to let the public know what is happening. Is this too much to ask?” he questioned.

Mr Titus Glover labelled the entire situation as a “calculated attempt” by the president, his government, and the party to weaken judicial independence.

He recalled a statement allegedly made by President Mahama during his campaign, vowing to deal with the Chief Justice upon coming to power.

“Didn’t you hear? Didn’t you listen? They said it openly on their political platform,” he added.

EC, Police hold talks ahead of Ablekuma North results declaration

0

The Electoral Commission (EC) has held a series of high-level meetings with the Ghana Police Service as part of efforts to finalise decisions regarding the protracted Ablekuma North parliamentary election impasse.

The constituency has remained without a Member of Parliament since the commencement of the 9th Parliament, following a dispute between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidates in the 2024 elections.

In the December 2024 parliamentary polls, Ewurabena Aubynn stood on the ticket of the NDC, while Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie represented the NPP. Both candidates have claimed victory, even though the Electoral Commission has yet to officially declare a winner.

The stalemate has heightened political tensions in the area. While the NDC is calling for a fresh election, the NPP insists the EC should declare results based on the December 7 vote.

Citi News sources indicate that a decisive meeting is scheduled for next week to determine the modalities required to resolve the situation and secure parliamentary representation for the constituency.

The impasse stems from disruptions during the final collation process in January 2025. The exercise was reportedly suspended after the emergence of unauthenticated pink sheets, which led to the collation centre being overrun—raising serious security concerns and halting the declaration of results.

As the deadlock persists, constituents and stakeholders have expressed growing frustration over the absence of a duly declared Member of Parliament.

Andy Appiah Kubi, counsel for the embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, has denied claims that his client has refused to eat in protest against his continued detention.

This update was shared in a viral social media post on Friday, May 30, 2025.

“Chairman Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, denies claims that his client is on a hunger strike,” the post read.

Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyire constituency, Frank Annoh Dompreh, alleged that Bernard Antwi-Boasiako has refused to eat in protest against his detention conditions, describing the supposed hunger strike as a desperate measure amid what he terms “shocking” treatment by EOCO officials.

Wontumi is currently under investigation for alleged involvement in multiple criminal offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai has revealed that a second phase of the investigation reportedly links Wontumi to a wider international organised crime syndicate.

Despite being granted bail set at GH¢50 million, his legal team has yet to satisfy the conditions required for his release.

Ghana’s Embassy in Washington DC issues over 800 visas on first day of resumption – Foreign Minister

0

By James Amoh Junior, GNA

Accra, May 30, GNA – Ghana’s Embassy in Washington DC resumed full operations on Thursday with an impressive start, issuing over 800 visas on the first day alone.

The development, Mr Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has hailed as a sign of renewed efficiency and professionalism at the mission as he announced in a social media post.

He applauded the newly deployed team of seasoned diplomats for what he called a remarkable start in executing a sweeping overhaul of the embassy’s operations, following recent institutional challenges.

“This is a testament that Ghanaian diplomats excel when provided with the right ecosystem and leadership,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.

He added that the embassy’s reopening marked a significant milestone in ongoing reforms across Ghana’s foreign missions.

The Washington DC mission had recently been the subject of internal audits, resulting in a complete change in leadership and the deployment of some of the Ministry’s most experienced diplomats.

The Minister noted that the changes formed part of a broader “patriotic consequential reset agenda” aimed at restoring the image and credibility of Ghana’s diplomatic outposts.

Responding to allegations that the reforms were being used to create political job opportunities, Mr. Ablakwa firmly refuted such claims.

“There have been no new recruitments to replace lost jobs at our Washington embassy,” he clarified, stating that “we have an adequate stock of distinguished and astute diplomats to lead ongoing reforms. This cannot be reduced to ‘jobs for the boys.’”

He further revealed that an unauthorized and opaque agreement allegedly signed in 2023 between a former embassy official, Fred Kwarteng, and a top embassy staff member has been nullified.

Mr. Ablakwa described the deal as illegal and indicated that the matter, along with details of frozen accounts and other remedial actions, would be fully disclosed in an upcoming address to Parliament.

The Minister’s firm stance and swift actions have been met with widespread public support, particularly on social media, where many commended him for his commitment to institutional integrity and his no-nonsense approach to diplomacy.

Mr Ibrahim Yakubu on facebook said: “Contrary to baseless criticism, your action has clearly restored public confidence at the embassy.”

“Great, I’m really happy with the enthusiasm and passion you put to your work. God bless and protect you!” Mr Emmanuel Baba Zotbah stated.

No new recruitment at Ghana’s Embassy in Washington D.C. – Ablakwa

0

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has rejected claims that new individuals have been recruited to work at Ghana’s embassy in Washington D.C in the United States.

He praised the performance of the newly reconstituted diplomatic team at Ghana’s embassy in Washington D.C., following a strong start on the first day of resumed operations.

“From the briefing I have received, our reopened embassy in Washington D.C. issued over 800 visas on the first day of resumption,” Ablakwa revealed in a Facebook statement. “I expect this level of efficiency, professionalism, and integrity to continue,” he added.

The Foreign Minister lauded the efforts of what he described as a “fresh team of seasoned diplomats,” crediting them with successfully executing a major systems overhaul and institutional reforms aimed at restoring integrity and performance within the embassy’s operations.

“This is a testament to the fact that Ghanaian diplomats excel when provided with the right ecosystem and leadership,” Ablakwa noted.

He also dismissed circulating claims suggesting that new personnel had been recruited to replace outgoing staff.

“Contrary to false and baseless claims, there have been no new recruitments to replace lost jobs in our Washington embassy — we have an adequate stock of distinguished and astute diplomats to lead ongoing reforms,” he stated.

Ablakwa emphasized that the embassy’s restructuring is part of a broader “patriotic consequential reset agenda” and rejected attempts to frame it as mere political patronage. “This cannot be reduced to ‘jobs for the boys,’” he asserted.

In a related development, the minister announced the invalidation of a “2023 unauthorized, opaque, and illegal agreement” involving Fred Kwarteng and a senior embassy official. The agreement, Ablakwa said, has been declared null and void.

“More on this — including details about frozen accounts and other remedial actions — will be presented in greater detail when I address Parliament next week,” he added.

Ghana’s embassy in Washington, D.C. was closed following an alleged IT fraud incident in which a staff member redirected visa applications to an external website.

The staff member, Fred Kwarteng, was dismissed, and the IT department was dissolved. The situation was later criticized by the Foreign Affairs Committee in Parliament.

Adongo mocks Minority for ‘abandoning’ Wontumi after EOCO protest

0

Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, has sharply criticized the Minority caucus in Parliament for their swift return to parliamentary business following a walkout protesting the continued detention of Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

On Thursday, May 29, several Minority MPs marched from Parliament to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters in Accra, demanding the immediate release of Wontumi, who is under investigation for alleged financial irregularities involving the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank).

The demonstration caused traffic disruptions and prompted a heavy police presence.

Chairman Wontumi, was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service. He was picked up by EOCO after he was released by the CID.

Although EOCO granted him bail of GHS50 million on Wednesday, May 28, the bail conditions—which require two justified sureties—have yet to be fulfilled.

Despite the protest, the Minority MPs returned to Parliament the next day, Friday, May 30, effectively ending their boycott.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament that same day, Adongo mocked the Minority MPs for abandoning Wontumi after publicly championing his cause.

“I think Wontumi will be very sad that you are here [Parliament] talking. He was expecting you to sleep at EOCO with him. You abandoned him to sleep there, and you promised the people of Ghana that you abandoned this chamber; you are here making a lot of arguments.”

He added, “You people should tell Wontumi that his people are deceiving him. He’s sleeping there alone, and you are here arguing for more holidays. We were surprised when they were sitting on the ground there, but when we went there at 7 pm, they had disappeared.”

Meanwhile, the 2024 flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is reported to have led efforts to meet the bail conditions for Wontumi.

Hamza Suhuyini slams NPP over support for Wontumi amid EOCO probe

0

Member of the NDC communications team, Hamza Sayibu Suhuyi Member of the NDC communications team, Hamza Sayibu Suhuyi

Lawyer and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, Hamza Sayibu Suhuyini, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he describes as misplaced loyalty to Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Suhuyini expressed shock at the conduct of some leading NPP figures, including Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who were seen seated on the floor in a show of solidarity with Wontumi amid ongoing investigations by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

“When I saw the likes of Afenyo-Markin, reputable lawyers and businessmen on the NPP side, seated on the floor, I told myself that this party is gone,” he stated.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on May 30, 2025, he questioned the integrity and judgment of the political class, accusing them of allowing themselves to be used to protect individuals facing serious allegations.

“These are not just acts of sitting on the floor. If these are the calibre of people who allow themselves to be used to shield individuals who need to be investigated, then we are in trouble. It raises serious questions about our maturity and understanding of democracy,” he said.

According to Suhuyini, Chairman Wontumi is under investigation for a series of alleged financial malpractices.

He cited reports suggesting that Wontumi, over the course of eight years, hijacked key operations of the Ghana Cocoa Board—particularly in relation to road construction projects.

One such contract, he noted, was valued at about $45 million. Investigations reportedly reveal that although funds were disbursed for these projects, many of the contracts were not executed.

“There are even allegations that fictitious certificates were created to facilitate payments for work that was never done, particularly involving the Department of Feeder Roads,” Suhuyini stated.

He added that such conduct, and the political support it appears to enjoy, undermines public trust and threatens the foundations of Ghana’s democracy.

Music to me is a kind of prophecy – Arathejay

Arathejay has shared that music is a kind of prophecy to him Arathejay has shared that music is a kind of prophecy to him

Ghanaian artiste Samuel Ofei Ankrah Badu, popularly known as Arathejay, has shared thoughts about what music means to him.

According to the “Jesus Christ” hitmaker, music goes beyond just telling a story to him but rather it is a form of prophecy.

In an interview with TurnTable Charts, Arathejay explained that he believes the words spoken in music have power and can influence what happens in real life.

“For me, music goes beyond storytelling because, to me, it’s a kind of prophecy. When you keep saying something to yourself, it is prone to come to pass,” Arathejay stated.

He also talked about how careful he is when writing his songs. According to him, music is about expressing what he believes in, and he always makes sure that his lyrics have a positive message.

“Music is about saying what I believe should be said. I’m very particular about my words and lyrics. Most of the time, people are prone to sing about what they feel, but I make sure it’s a positive output at the end of the day,” he shared.

Arathejay added that his music is meant to speak for people who may not have the chance to express themselves. He shared that while he sings about different topics, he ensures that there is a message of hope and positivity in his lyrics.

“Being able to speak for those who do not have the mouthpiece or avenue. My music isn’t always about people struggling or going through life because I touch other themes like love too, but positivity is always present,” he said.

Wontumi’s arrest and detention lawful; EOCO has done nothing wrong

0

Andy Appiah-Kubi is the lawyer of Chairman Wontumi Andy Appiah-Kubi is the lawyer of Chairman Wontumi

The lawyer of embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), has refuted assertions that his client was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in a ‘rambo style’.

Speaking in an interview with Oyerepa TV/FM on Friday, May 30, 2025, lawyer Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi said a warrant was issued for Wontumi’s arrest by EOCO.

He indicated that if there is anything wrong with his client’s arrest, it is the law that establishes EOCO.

“Let me explain, the type of arrest they made was an arrest under warrant. So, there was an arrest warrant for Chairman Wontumi… So, if there is anything wrong, it should be the law itself and not the approach.

“The law states that EOCO, as an entity, has the same powers as the police — that is the EOCO Act. So, their work is just like that of the police and includes them arresting upon warrant,” he explained in the Twi dialect.

He added, “But the issue with the law is that the warrant should be granted by the court, not by EOCO itself. So, the default in the law is EOCO itself having the power to issue warrants. Because if the law were such that the court was supposed to issue the warrant to EOCO, the justification for issuing the warrant would be determined in the court, but with this (law), they can decide whether or not to arrest under warrant,” he said.

He also explained that because there was a warrant for Wontumi’s arrest, his continued detention by EOCO after 48 hours was not illegal.

“Because he was arrested under warrant, the 48-hour rule under the Criminal Procedure Code does not apply,” he said.

He added that the rule in the criminal code for a suspect to be released after 48 hours only applies to arrests without warrants.

Lawyer Appiah-Kubi said that his team is working to file proceedings in court to get Wontumi’s bail conditions reduced so they can meet them.

KIA's Terminal 2 to undergo repurposing KIA’s Terminal 2 to undergo repurposing

The Ministry of Transport, together with the management of Kotoka International Airport, has begun expansion work at Terminal 2.

This is intended to reduce congestion at Terminal 3 and enhance overall efficiency.

The expansion of Terminal 2 will accommodate both domestic and international flights, with operations rolled out in two distinct phases.

The Minister of Transport, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, during a working visit to the airport, explained that the project aims to increase the airport’s capacity to better manage the growing volumes of passengers and cargo.

“If you visit Terminal 3 at rush hour, you will realize that there is congestion. So, we have divided Terminal 2 into two phases: one for domestic flights, and the area where we are currently standing will serve international flights.

“This way, we can transfer some of the load from Terminal 3 here, thereby decongesting Terminal 3 and providing more comfort and space for our travelers,” he was quoted as saying by citinewsroom.com.

This move comes after Terminal 3 at KIA has experienced increasing congestion in recent years.

According to the ministry, the renovation of Terminal 2 is expected to significantly improve the passenger experience while enhancing the efficiency of services at the airport.
