“She’s a Product of Violence” – Sammy Awuku Slams Ablekuma North MP’s Victory

0

Member of Parliament for Akuapim North, Sammy Awuku, has strongly criticized the outcome of the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run, accusing the process of being marred by violence and intimidation as reported by Ghana Web.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM on July 22, 2025, Awuku argued that the newly sworn-in MP, Ewurabena Aubynn, emerged from an election process that left many injured and traumatized.

He maintained that her victory could not be divorced from the chaotic scenes that played out during the re-run across 19 polling stations.

According to him, the walkout staged by the Minority in Parliament during Aubynn’s swearing-in was a principled protest.

Awuku said the decision was based on what he described as a “tainted” electoral process that saw brutal attacks on individuals, including former MP Mavis Hawa Koomson.

He further alleged that despite clear evidence of violence, including video footage, no arrests had been made.

Awuku questioned the silence of law enforcement agencies, implying that the lack of accountability pointed to a deeper problem.

“The noisy silence of law enforcement agencies gives us the impression that these operatives and those who acted in that manner had the tacit endorsement of government,” he stated.

The controversial re-run came after irregularities were reported in the initial vote, prompting the Electoral Commission to organize fresh elections at selected polling stations.

However, the rerun was overshadowed by violent incidents, drawing sharp criticism from the opposition.

Awuku insisted that until justice is served and perpetrators are held accountable, the legitimacy of the new MP’s position would remain in question.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, is expected to take his turn in the Government Accountability Series today, Wednesday, July 23, 2025, where he will present a comprehensive update on his stewardship and ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The announcement was made by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in a Facebook post earlier today.

“Today, Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, takes his turn to account for his stewardship of the sector and provide an update on the fight against galamsey,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu wrote.

The appearance is part of the Government Accountability Series, a public engagement platform aimed at enhancing transparency and providing regular updates on key sectors of the economy.

Kwakye Ofosu also revealed that Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, will appear before the nation on Monday, July 28, 2025, to address several high-profile legal matters.

“Dr. Ayine will answer all questions on the Unibank matter, provide an update on ORAL, and unfurl details of a case he calls ‘Rumble in the Jungle’,” he stated.

The ongoing series is part of the government’s broader efforts to promote openness, accountability, and public participation in governance.

Deputy Minority Leader declines ECOWAS Parliament nomination, cites lack of consultation

0

The Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament, madam Patricia Appiagyei, has turned down her nomination to represent Ghana at the ECOWAS Parliament.

In a memorandum directed to the Speaker Alban Bagbin, she said the decision to include her was made without her knowledge or consent, and described it as a calculated attempt to replace the Minority Leader while creating division within the caucus.

This follows concerns raised by the Majority Leader in Parliament on Tuesday , July 22, 2025.

The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga argued that the ECOWAS Parliament was pushing for 30 percent female representation hence it was customary for deputy minority leaders to be part of the delegation.

He therefore suggested that madam Appiagyei replaces Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin in the newly reconstituted list.

This notwithstanding, madam Appiagyei, in a memo to the speaker, said she was not consulted and had never agreed to replace her leader.

The deputy minority leader revealed that she was surprised that such a proposal was made in her absence and that of the minority leader.

According to her, there had been a clear understanding that Afenyo-Markin would continue serving on the ECOWAS Parliament, and this had been communicated to the committee of selection.

She described the move as procedurally wrong and legally flawed.

Madam Appiagyei explained that Afenyo-Markin had been sworn in as a Member of the ECOWAS Parliament and later elected Deputy Speaker.

She said under ECOWAS law, a member’s term lasts four years unless they resign, leave Parliament, or become ineligible.

Since none of those conditions apply, she believes there is no justification for his removal.

She added that replacing him without proper cause would breach ECOWAS statutes and Ghana’s parliamentary procedures.

While supporting the call for more women in regional bodies, she called for due process to be followed.

“Using gender parity as a reason for irregular decisions undermines both the goal and the integrity of Parliament,” she noted.

She officially declined the nomination and urged that her name be removed from the list sent to ECOWAS.

She also asked the Clerk of Parliament not to communicate any resolution that includes her name.

She called for the original list of nominees to be maintained to preserve unity in the house and avoid public embarrassment.

The original nominees include Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Kwame Anyimadu Antwi, and Bryan Acheampong.

WAFCON 2025: “We were the better team” – Black Queens coach on semifinal loss

0

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren believes his side outperformed Morocco in their WAFCON 2025 semifinal clash, despite falling short of reaching the final.

Ghana was narrowly missed out on the final after a defeat to the host nation on penalties.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Björkegren expressed pride in his team’s effort and rued the missed opportunity.

“I think we were the better team if you look at stats from the game,” he said.

While Ghana’s campaign ends in disappointment, their display against a strong Moroccan side earned praise for tactical discipline and resilience.

Ghana took a first half lead through Stella Nyamekye but the Moroccans found an equalizer in the second as the game travelled all the way into penalty shootout.

The Black Queens missed two out of their four penalties while Morocco scored all four to progress into the final.

Despite the loss, Björkegren’s comments highlight the team’s growth and competitiveness on the continental stage.

The Black Queens will now look to regroup as they face South Africa in the third-place match on Friday.

Patricia Appiagyei rejects ECOWAS Parliament nomination, cites procedural impropriety

0

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, July 23, GNA-Madam Patricia Appiagyei, Deputy Minority Leader, has declined her nomination to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament delegation, citing procedural irregularities and the lack of consultation.

In a memorandum to Mr. Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, and issued to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, it expressed concerns over the nomination process and the alleged attempt to replace Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader.

It said, “I was neither consulted nor did I give my consent to be considered as a replacement for the Minority Leader… This development appears to be a calculated effort to cause division between myself and my leader.

“True inclusion must be built on transparent dialogue and not imposed at the expense of established norms or the integrity of leadership structures,” the memo added.

The memo emphasized that Osahen Afenyo-Markin’s tenure as Third Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament remained valid, and any attempt to replace him would breach internal parliamentary practice and ECOWAS statutes.

It urged the House to rescind the decision and maintain the original nominees.

“The Minority Leader is a duly designated member with an unexpired term, and any attempt to remove him from that position without cause or consensus is both procedurally irregular and politically regrettable,” it noted.

Parliament on Tuesday July 22, approved the composition of Ghana’s ECOWAS Parliament delegation with some last-minute amendments to ensure compliance with the 30 per cent female quota.

The approved list included Mr. George Kwaku Ricketts-Hagan, a National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Cape Coast South, as the leader of the delegation.

The new members of the delegation were Mr. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, NDC MP for Ho West; Madam Laadi Ayii Ayamba, NDC MP for Pusiga; Mr. Eric Afful, NDC MP for Amenfi West; Mr. Dominic Napare, NDC MP for Sene East; Madam Patricia Appiagyei, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Asokwa; Mr. Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, NPP MP for Asante Akim Central; and Mr. Bryan Acheampong, NPP MP for Abetifi.

Madam Millicent Yeboah Amankwah, a first-term NDC MP for Sunyani West, was proposed and accepted as an observer.

‘This is very welcoming’ – Freight forwarders on BoG’s daily exchange rate directive at ports

0

The Chamber of Freight Forwarders and Traders has welcomed the Bank of Ghana’s directive requiring all port service providers to publicly disclose the exchange rates they apply in their billing processes.

It describes the move as a bold and long-overdue reform to improve transparency and reduce the cost of doing business at Ghana’s ports.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday, July 22, President of the Chamber, Dennis Amfo Sefa, commended the central bank for heeding years of advocacy from industry players.

“This is very welcoming. Over the years, we have consistently called for this level of transparency. If the government is serious about reducing the cost of daily business, then port operators, shipping lines, and terminal operators must all be held to account,” he stated.

He further said that the effectiveness of the government’s broader efforts to stabilise exchange rates must be reflected in port operations as well.

“If government is putting the right policies to solve the exchange rate and its fluctuation, it must equally reflect on the exchange rate that other ports project.”

The directive, effective July 22, 2025 compels shipping companies, terminal operators, freight forwarders and other port service providers to publish their exchange rates daily.

These rates must be visible on websites or displayed at physical premises and communicated to clients before any invoicing is done.

The new rules, issued under the BoG’s revised guidelines on foreign exchange practices in the maritime and shipping sectors, aim to enhance consistency in billing and promote fair trade practices.

All invoices are now required to state the original currency of service, the applied exchange rate, the date of its application, and the final amount in either Ghana cedis (GHS) or U.S. dollars (USD).

The central bank insists that applied rates must reflect prevailing interbank market conditions not arbitrary valuations.

It believes this addresses long-standing complaints from importers and exporters over pricing inconsistencies.

Don’t rush tax concessions for Atlantic Lithium – CSOs caution government

0

Civil Society Organisation, the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) has urged the government to exercise caution in granting tax reliefs to Atlantic Lithium, noting that Parliament never ratified the company’s original 2023 agreement.

The Institute emphasised that any fiscal adjustments must be grounded in verified data rather than company-provided figures.

This call comes as Atlantic Lithium seeks revised fiscal terms for its Ewoyaa Lithium Project, citing falling global lithium prices – just as Ghana’s Parliament prepares to ratify the final stage of the company’s mining lease.

Speaking to Citi News on Tuesday, July 23, 2025, Dennis Gyeyir, NRGI’s Country Manager, urged the government to strengthen tax regulations, prevent transfer pricing, and enforce cost controls in any revised agreement.

He cautioned, however, that tax concessions should not be granted without rigorous scrutiny.

“Any tax relief should not be granted without checks, because the country could end up losing significant revenue. Our recommendation is that any decision must be carefully and strategically considered. If Ghana decides to offer relief, it should not be a blanket concession,” he stated.

Mr. Gyeyir proposed a flexible tax regime that adjusts in response to global lithium prices rising when prices increase and easing when they decline to safeguard Ghana’s long-term economic interests.

He also stressed the importance of full transparency regarding the company’s cost assumptions, noting that any renegotiations must be based on evidence, not corporate claims.

NRGI further insists that agreed community benefits including ownership stakes and compensation arrangements must remain intact. “The community share must not be diluted. It is one of the few mechanisms that ensure local people benefit from the project,” Mr. Gyeyir emphasised.

He reiterated the need for a tighter tax and regulatory framework, calling for clauses to prevent transfer pricing and for strict cost control measures to be embedded in any new agreement.

NRGI’s call comes on the back of Atlantic Lithium’s decision seeking to revise the fiscal terms of its Ewoyaa Lithium Project in response to declining global lithium prices.

The mining firm is in talks with Ghanaian authorities to adjust the original terms of the lease granted in October 2023 when lithium prices were at a high to reflect current market realities and safeguard long-term benefits for both the country and investors.

During a parliamentary session on July 16, 2025, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, confirmed that Cabinet had given the green light for negotiations on the lease’s fiscal terms ahead of its final approval in Parliament.

He highlighted the project’s potential to stimulate job creation and economic growth, particularly in the Central Region.

Most fuel stations in Volta and Greater Accra complying with safety rules – COMAC

0

A surprise inspection by the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) has confirmed that most fuel stations and refilling plants in the Volta and parts of the Greater Accra Regions are adhering to safety and operational standards.

According to a report by gbconline.com, the unannounced audit, COMAC’s third this year, is part of the Chamber’s broader efforts to promote transparency, accountability, and high performance within Ghana’s petroleum sector.

The operation was led by COMAC CEO Dr Riverson Oppong, Acting Head of Compliance and Operations Billey-Abdullah Al-Assad, and Compliance Officer Courage Agblevor.

The team visited 100 fuel outlets in locations including Kpeve, Hohoe, Ho, Sogakope, Keta, and Ada.

These surprise visits aimed to provide an accurate picture of day-to-day operations, with a focus on safety protocols and customer service.

Dr Oppong noted that while the majority of stations performed well, some fuel dispensers were found to be delivering inaccurate volumes, either above or below the correct measure.

These discrepancies will be reported to the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and the Ghana Standards Authority for further investigation.

“We’re committed to protecting consumers and ensuring fair business practices,” Dr Oppong stated.

He also commended the professionalism and customer care displayed by most station attendants, adding that such standards help to build public trust in the petroleum sector.

Despite the generally positive findings, a few attendants reported customer concerns about fuel pricing, particularly over why prices differed between stations.

Outrage, disappointment – How Ghanaians reacted to Black Queens’ defeat to Morocco

0

The black Queens lost to Morocco on penalty shootout The black Queens lost to Morocco on penalty shootout

Scores of Ghanaians expressed their disappointment following the Black Queens’ loss to Morocco on penalties in the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghana seized the initiative and broke the deadlock in the 26th minute through Stella Nyamekye, who reacted swiftly to convert a rebound after Morocco’s goalkeeper, Khadija Er-Rmichi, had parried a header from Josephine Bonsu.

Morocco emerged stronger in the second half, increasing the intensity of their attacks, and their persistence was rewarded in the 55th minute.

Sakina Ouzraoui exploited a lapse in Ghana’s defence, beating goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan to restore parity at 1-1.

Unfortunately, the Black Queens lost on penalties by 4-2, thwarting their title ambitions.

In reaction to the game, some football fans criticised the team for their poor finishing and squandering many chances in the game, which they could have easily won before half-time.

Others asserted that despite the brilliant performances they put up against the host nation, it was a disappointment that they could not book their ticket to the final and probably lift the trophy.

However, there were some individuals who commended the team for their resilient and dominant performance in the tournament and urged them to build on it to succeed in future competitions.

Angry Hopeson Adorye Curses UTV Fan For Attacking Empress Gifty

0

A social media storm is brewing following a fiery confrontation involving Hopeson Adorye, Empress Gifty, Prophet Kumchacha, and a fan of United Television (UTV). The drama unfolded after a controversial episode of United Showbiz, where discussions over a trending chieftaincy title sparked harsh reactions, accusations, and even spiritual warnings.

In a passionate and confrontational statement that has since gone viral, political activist Hopeson Adorye invoked curses on a social media commenter who described his wife, Empress Gifty, as “a disgrace to Ghana.” In a fiery retort, Mr. Adorye said, “May the gods of this country deal bitterly with you forever and ever. Amen.” His comment has set off a firestorm of reactions online, dividing netizens and stoking tensions.

This follows recent criticism targeting Empress Gifty over her acceptance of a chieftaincy title from a foreign traditional authority, a gesture some critics deemed dishonorable. UTV’s silence on the matter during their United Showbiz segment has also raised eyebrows, with critics accusing the platform of turning a blind eye due to personal affiliations.

In response to the brewing chaos, a fan who appeared to be at the center of the controversy declared their readiness to die defending Ghana’s honor, stating, “If I will die and save my next generation, I’m ready for it… I will never disrespect you, but I haven’t mentioned your name either.”

Transitioning to the heart of the debate, Prophet Kumchacha also reignited his ongoing clash with Empress Gifty, calling her out again publicly. Meanwhile, other voices in the fray have called for restraint, noting that public platforms and viral comment sections carry great responsibility. Additionally, some commentators have demanded that United Showbiz address the controversy to preserve its integrity. “Have they been compromised, or why the silence?” one critic questioned.

Kwadaso MP dismisses ‘MahamaCares’ Bill

0

The Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, Professor Kingsley Nyarko, has strongly criticised the newly approved Ghana Medical Trust Fund Bill, 2025—popularly known as the ‘MahamaCares’ Programme—labeling it as “needless” and “unnecessary.”

The Bill seeks to create a dedicated fund aimed at supporting the treatment of chronic non-communicable diseases, including cancer, kidney failure, stroke, and diabetes.

Timeless Style and Modern Elegance

0

A suit for men is more than just a piece of clothing—it’s a timeless symbol of sophistication, confidence, and professionalism. In every era, from the boardroom to the ballroom, the suit has stood as a mark of distinction. As fashion trends ebb and flow, the classic men’s suit remains a staple, evolving just enough to reflect modern tastes while holding fast to its elegant roots.

At its core, a suit is a coordinated ensemble typically consisting of a jacket and trousers crafted from the same material. Whether single-breasted or double-breasted, slim fit or classic cut, each style offers something distinct, allowing men to express individuality while honoring tradition. “A well-tailored suit is to women what lingerie is to men,” once quipped fashion designer Elie Saab—highlighting just how powerful and transformative the right suit can be.

The fabric is the foundation of a great suit. Wool continues to dominate due to its versatility and year-round appeal. In warmer seasons, breathable options like linen or cotton provide comfort without compromising style, while tweed or flannel offer warmth and texture during colder months.

Color choice is equally critical. Timeless shades like navy, charcoal, and black serve as the cornerstones of formalwear, offering flexibility for work and evening affairs. For more casual or expressive moments, lighter tones or subtle patterns like checks and pinstripes add character and flair without overstepping sophistication.

Yet, perhaps the most crucial element of any suit is the fit. A suit should complement the body—not mask it. Proper tailoring ensures the jacket contours the shoulders, the sleeves end at the wrist bone, and the trousers break perfectly at the shoes. An ill-fitting suit, no matter how luxurious the fabric, can undo the very message the wearer hopes to send.

Today’s suits are not bound to tradition alone—they’ve become an expression of personal style and confidence. With innovations in fabric, cut, and detail, modern suits are lighter, more comfortable, and more versatile than ever. Whether worn for a wedding, a crucial business pitch, or a formal event, the suit retains its status as a man’s silent partner in making a lasting impression.

Two armed robbers killed, Police officer injured in Cantonments shootout

0

Two suspected armed robbers have been shot dead and a police officer critically injured following a gun battle between a police surveillance team and a gang of armed men in Cantonments, Accra.

Police sources say the incident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, July 15, 2025, after the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) Headquarters received intelligence about a planned robbery by a group of five young men from Bimbilla in the Northern Region.

The suspects have been identified as Mujeeb Omor, Abukari, Akpa, and Yakubu Jengbarigba, also known as Pato — a former police officer who was reportedly dismissed from the service over a similar incident.

According to sources, the suspects, reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles, pump-action shotguns, and pistols, had checked into a hotel in Labadi and were allegedly preparing to attack a foreign national residing in Cantonments.

A team led by ASP Richard Beriko and ASP Emmanuel Doe Yevoo was dispatched to monitor their movements.

At about 8:00 p.m., the armed men left their hotel in a Toyota Yaris and headed toward the target location. The surveillance team trailed them but was detected, prompting the suspects to open fire on the officers.

In the ensuing exchange, General Sergeant Samuel Akocha sustained gunshot wounds to his left leg and right armpit. Police returned fire, fatally wounding two of the suspects. The remaining three fled the scene with their weapons.

A search of the injured suspects uncovered two loaded pump-action guns, live cartridges, three iPhones, talismans, and four rings believed to be used for spiritual protection.

The wounded officer and the injured suspects were rushed to the Police Hospital. The suspects were pronounced dead on arrival, while Sgt Akocha remains on admission and is responding to treatment.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Meanwhile, a manhunt is underway to apprehend the three fugitives.

Police have assured the public of their commitment to tracking down the remaining suspects and maintaining security in the capital.

Duffuor Case: Accepting 60% recovery undermines justice and accountability – Sulemana Braimah

0

The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah, has criticised the Attorney-General’s decision to accept a partial recovery of funds in the case involving former Finance Minister Dr Kwabena Duffuor and seven others over the collapse of uniBank.

The Attorney-General’s Department defended its decision, citing a 60% recovery of funds and assets from the accused as justification for halting further prosecution, arguing it no longer served the public interest.

While Mr Braimah acknowledged that the decision to enter a nolle prosequi may be legally strategic, he argued that settling for only 60% recovery undermines public accountability and emboldens potential offenders.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, he said the approach could create the impression that individuals can misappropriate public funds and still benefit.

“I think if we are going this way, if I misappropriate GHS100 million or something to that effect, and then in the end, I know that the system is such that if I put forward even not 60% but 70% of whatever has been taken, I am going to do away with 30%,” he stated.

“If it involves GHS100 million and I manage to give out GHS70 million, I can keep the GHS30 million for free — then that is an incentive to engage in all sorts of things,” he added.

Mr Braimah cautioned that such settlements, if not properly justified and transparently managed, risk eroding public confidence in the justice system and in the State’s anti-corruption efforts.

“Is that the kind of country we want to build, where it is okay to steal, loot, or misappropriate? If you are not caught, you get away with it, and if you are caught, you refund 60% or 70% and keep the rest? Is that why we are involved in this fight against corruption?” he bemoaned.

He further warned that the lack of deterrent sanctions in such high-profile financial crime cases could set a dangerous precedent.

“If this is how we’re going to go about it, then there is actually an incentive to steal from the State, because there is no sanction, there is no deterrent, there is no accountability, just refund what you have looted, not even all of it, just part… then, really, I think there is an incentive for many people to do a lot of things against this country.”

The Attorney-General recently entered a nolle prosequi in the case The Republic v. Kwabena Duffuor & 7 Others, citing substantial asset recovery as part of a broader non-conviction-based strategy under Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL).

Moliy claps back at body-shaming critics after UK performance

0

Ghanaian songstress Moliy has fired back at critics who mocked her appearance following her performance at the Party in the Park event in the UK.

Over the weekend, a video of Moliy’s energetic performance went viral. However, instead of celebrating her stage presence and the significance of her participation at the international event, some social media users focused on her physical appearance.

Several commenters took aim at her midsection, pointing out what they described as a “pot belly,” with some suggesting she hit the gym. Others ridiculed her choice of outfit, ignoring her vocal delivery and performance energy.

In a sharp and confident clapback shared online, Moliy wrote:
“Hope all of you spending your day talking about my body again got rent and due bills ready. We’re in the middle of the month. Just a reminder. Much luv.”

Her response has since gained widespread support, with fans and fellow industry players applauding her confidence and composure.

The incident has reignited ongoing discussions about body shaming in Ghana’s entertainment space, especially the pressure placed on female artistes.

Moliy now joins a growing list of women in the industry calling out harsh commentary and unrealistic beauty standards. Earlier this month, fellow artiste Wendy Shay also took to social media to denounce body shaming, describing it as an unhealthy obsession that often overshadows women’s artistry and impact.

Weak evidence led to Duffour case discontinuation – Wonder Madilo

0

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Wonder Madilo, has suggested that the Attorney-General’s decision to discontinue the trial of former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffour and seven others shows there was insufficient evidence to secure convictions.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, July 23, Madilo stated that the outcome of the case makes it evident that the prosecution lacked a strong legal foundation from the outset, emphasising that the government’s ability to recover a significant portion of the misappropriated funds should be viewed as a positive step in managing the country’s fiscal challenges.

“If they had enough evidence against them, they would be in jail. For me, this shows that the evidence wasn’t enough. So the Attorney-General’s decision to recover what can be recovered is the best outcome under the circumstances,” Madilo asserted.

The Attorney-General’s Office on Tuesday, July 22, entered a nolle prosequi in the case, The Republic v. Kwabena Duffour & 7 Others (CR/0248/2020), formally ending the prosecution of the former minister and his co-accused. They were being tried over alleged financial improprieties linked to the 2018 financial sector reforms.

In a press statement, Deputy Attorney-General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai said the decision was taken in the interest of transparency and public accountability, even though the law does not require the Attorney-General to explain the reason for withdrawing a case.

According to the statement, the prosecution was halted after a benchmark was set requiring the recovery of at least 60% of the alleged losses, which had been achieved or was in progress.

Attorney-General gives reasons for dropping charges against Duffuor and others

0

The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has entered a nolle prosequi in the high-profile criminal case involving former Finance Minister Dr Kwabena Duffuor and seven others. The accused had been standing trial over their roles in the collapse of the now-defunct uniBank.

The decision, announced on Monday, July 22, 2025, by Deputy Attorney-General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, brings the prosecution to an end, following what the Attorney-General’s Office described as “significant recoveries” of state funds implicated in the matter.

Arteta breaks silence on Partey’s rape charges: ‘Arsenal followed right processes’

0

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says he is “100 per cent” sure the club followed the right processes when dealing with former midfielder Thomas Partey, who was under police investigation for multiple counts of rape while he was playing for the club.

The Ghana midfielder, 32, left Arsenal at the end of his contract on 30 June and four days later was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

The offences are reported to have taken place in 2021 and 2022, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement on 4 July.

The charges involve three women, with two counts of rape relating to one woman, three counts of rape in connection to a second woman and one count of sexual assault linked to a third woman.

Partey denies the charges and “welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name”, his lawyer has said.

Detectives started a investigation in February 2022 after police first received a report of rape.

Arsenal are in Singapore for their pre-season tour. They play AC Milan and Newcastle before travelling to Hong Kong to play Tottenham.

Arteta was asked in a news conference before they play Milan on Wednesday about the situation with Partey.

“The club was very clear in its statement,” Arteta said. “There are a lot of legal matters that are very complicated so I cannot comment on any of that.”

He was then asked: “A lot of fans have questions over the way in which the matter was handled by the club. Do you feel confident and comfortable that the club followed all the right processes in that?”

Arteta answered: “100 per cent, yes.”

Partey is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 5 August.

He joined Arsenal for £45m from Atletico Madrid in October 2020.

He made 35 appearances in the Premier League last season and scored four goals as Arsenal finished second.

He also played 12 times in the Champions League as the Gunners reached the semi-finals before being knocked out by eventual winners Paris St-Germain.

IMANI Warns Ghana’s “Managed” Cedi Masks Structural Weakness

0

Ghana CedisGhana Cedis
Ghana Cedis

Ghana’s foreign exchange system is showing signs of significant strain, with a growing disparity between official and market currency rates, according to a new policy brief by IMANI Africa.

The think tank’s analysis suggests the current exchange rate mechanism may be masking deeper economic vulnerabilities rather than addressing them.

The report highlights a concerning gap between the Bank of Ghana’s official interbank rate and actual transaction rates in the market. While the central bank maintains an official rate around GH¢12.80 to the dollar, evidence suggests many businesses access dollars at rates exceeding GH¢14. This discrepancy creates a two-tier system that distorts market operations and pushes some transactions into informal channels.

IMANI’s research indicates Ghana’s currency challenges stem from fundamental structural issues in the economy. The country remains heavily dependent on raw commodity exports, with cocoa, gold, and cashew accounting for over 80% of export earnings. This reliance on unprocessed goods leaves the economy vulnerable to price fluctuations and limits potential value addition that could strengthen the cedi.

The policy brief calls for comprehensive reforms to enhance productivity and diversify Ghana’s export base. Recommendations include increased investment in agricultural mechanization, industrial development, and skills training to move production up the value chain. The report emphasizes that lasting currency stability requires building economic capacity rather than managing exchange rates.

Transparency in industrial policy implementation emerges as another key concern. The brief references several government-supported initiatives where performance data remains unavailable for public scrutiny. IMANI argues this lack of accountability makes it difficult to assess program effectiveness or make necessary adjustments to economic strategies.

The Mahama administration faces growing pressure to address these structural challenges as businesses struggle with currency access. With the next election scheduled for 2028, the government’s ability to implement meaningful economic reforms could significantly influence Ghana’s medium-term financial stability.

‘Dampare is the cause of fake death prophecies, he tolerated it’

Shatta Wale is a Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale is a Ghanaian dancehall artiste

Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale, has criticised former Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare, attributing the rise in fake death prophecies to his alleged inaction.

Shatta Wale claims Dampare’s tolerance of such pronouncements has allowed them to escalate.

Shatta Wale’s comments follow the recent circulation of an online video in which a self-proclaimed man of God claimed to have had a spiritual vision depicting armed men attempting to end Shatta Wale’s life.

According to the prophet, Shatta Wale reportedly escaped the initial assault and subsequently posted on social media to thank God for his survival.

However, the same individual then claimed that three different men later appeared and shot Shatta Wale dead in the vision.

This prophecy has angered Shatta Wale, who views such statements as dangerous and asserts they should not be dismissed lightly.

Reacting to the video on X on July 22, 2025, the musician issued an ultimatum to the Ghana Police Service.

He demanded that the prophet be arrested within a week, warning that if no action is taken, he would take matters into his own hands, clarifying that his response would not involve violence but serve as a lesson to this country.

“Men of God indeed, this is what Dampare supported and it escalated. Ghana Police, if you don’t arrest this man within 1 week, nobody should blame me for what I am capable of doing and it won’t be violence but a lesson to this country,” Shatta Wale posted.

This is not the first time Shatta Wale has been the subject of a death prophecy.

In 2021, a pastor named Jesus Ahuofe made a similar prediction that the artiste would be shot.

That incident led to Shatta Wale faking his own death, resulting in his and the pastor’s arrest.

Shatta Wale was subsequently jailed for several weeks for causing fear and panic.

The Black Queens’ ambition of reaching the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final was halted after a 4-2 penalty shootout defeat to host nation Morocco in the semi-final on Monday, July 22, 2024.

The Black Queens, who were aiming for their first WAFCON final appearance since 2006, fell short after Evelyn Badu and Comfort Yeboah missed their spot kicks.

The encounter, played before a fully packed stadium, began with both sides adopting a measured approach, with Ghana creating some decent chances.

Ghana broke the deadlock in the 26th minute through Stella Nyamekye, who reacted swiftly to convert a rebound after Morocco’s goalkeeper, Khadija Er-Rmichi, had parried a header from Josephine Bonsu.

Morocco emerged stronger in the second half, increasing the intensity of their attacks, and their persistence was rewarded in the 55th minute following a defensive blunder.

Sakina Ouzraoui exploited a lapse in Ghana’s defence, beating goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan to restore parity at 1-1 and reignite their spirit.

The Queens kept pushing for the winner but were unsuccessful in their pursuit after extra time.

Ghana’s hope of surviving another penalty debacle was foiled after two missed spot kicks, with goalie Cynthia failing to make a save.

The Black Queens will now face defending champions South Africa in the third-place playoff on July 25, 2024, while Nigeria and Morocco will compete for the title.

Mahama refers electoral violence report to Attorney General

0

President John Dramani Mahama has forwarded a comprehensive report on electoral violence recorded during the 2020 and 2024 general elections to the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, for legal review and advice.

The report, compiled and submitted by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, details findings on violent incidents that disrupted both elections, including shootings and clashes between political party supporters and security forces.

These disturbances led to multiple fatalities and injuries across several constituencies. Eight people were reportedly killed during the 2020 elections, while three others lost their lives in the 2024 polls.

The IGP’s submission follows a directive issued by President Mahama shortly after assuming office, in response to persistent demands from civil society organizations for accountability and transparency in addressing politically motivated violence.

By involving the Attorney General, the President seeks to determine the appropriate legal steps to ensure justice for victims and to implement measures aimed at preventing similar incidents in future electoral processes.

The Presidency has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and strengthening public trust in Ghana’s democratic institutions.

Ghana Nears Single-Digit Inflation as Deloitte Flags Policy Risks

Bog Boss InflationBog Boss Inflation
Bog Boss Inflation

Ghana’s inflation rate is projected to fall below the Bank of Ghana’s 12% target and reach single digits by year-end, according to Deloitte’s latest West Africa Inflation Update.

The advisory firm cited a sustained disinflationary trend, potentially enabling the central bank to initiate interest rate reductions starting as early as its July 2025 Monetary Policy Committee meeting.

Lower interest rates are expected to stimulate credit flow to businesses, supporting economic activity and growth acceleration. Deloitte attributed the declining inflation primarily to ongoing fiscal consolidation efforts by the Mahama administration and the central bank’s tight monetary policy stance. Ghana’s headline inflation dropped sharply to 13.7% in June 2025, down from 18.4% in May, driven by lower fuel prices, reduced transport fares, and a stronger cedi. Notably, month-on-month inflation recorded deflation of -1.2%, the first such occurrence since August 2024.

Food inflation fell to 16.3%, while non-food inflation also declined, easing pressure on household budgets. Despite this positive trajectory, Deloitte cautioned that significant upside risks remain. It highlighted potential inflationary pressures from external shocks, a recent 2.45% electricity tariff hike increasing production costs, and the newly implemented GH₵1.00 per litre fuel levy on petroleum products, which could raise transportation and broader sectoral prices.

While acknowledging Ghana’s progress towards macroeconomic stability, Deloitte urged policymakers to remain vigilant and responsive to these external risks and policy trade-offs to prevent derailing the disinflationary gains.

Cement Talks Focus on Pricing and Quality as Cedi Strengthens

Ghana’s Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare convened a key meeting with major cement producers to address market stability and consumer protection.

Representatives from Ghacem, CIMAF, CBI, Dangote, Dzata, Empire, and Diamond Cement, operating under the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers, Ghana (COCMAG), acknowledged the positive impact of the cedi’s recent appreciation against major trading currencies. The minister stated that this currency stability must translate into tangible benefits for consumers through fair and sustainable pricing structures.

Beyond pricing concerns, the minister emphasized stringent adherence to national product quality standards. According to ministry statements, the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) will significantly increase the frequency of its factory inspections starting in August 2025, conducting rigorous quarterly checks across the industry. The minister clearly indicated that manufacturers failing to meet regulatory requirements face potential operational shutdowns, underscoring the government’s commitment to quality enforcement.

Cement remains a critical input for Ghana’s ongoing housing, infrastructure, and construction projects. Industry stakeholders present suggested that sustained exchange rate stability, coupled with consistent regulatory oversight, could enhance market competitiveness, support long-term sector growth, and ultimately deliver better value for both businesses and consumers nationwide. The discussions reflect the Mahama administration’s focus on industrial regulation amidst broader economic recovery efforts.

Ablekuma North MP is a product of violence

MP for Akuapim North, Sammy Awuku MP for Akuapim North, Sammy Awuku

Member of Parliament for Akuapim North, Sammy Awuku has described Ewurabena Aubynn, MP for Ablekuma North, as a product of a violent election.

According to Awuku, Aubynn’s victory in the parliamentary re-run cannot be detached from the acts of violence that characterized the election.

Speaking to Citi FM on Tuesday July 22, 2025, Awuku explained that the minority’s decision to walk out of parliament during Aubynn’s swearing-in on July 22, 2025, was a principled stance.

He stated, “We clearly believe that she is a product of a violent election that led to people being maimed, traumatized, and severely beaten.”

Awuku shed light on the minority’s walkout, saying their action stemmed from the fact that “the election that produced her victory is tainted, and we believe it had blood on the hands of the organizers.”

He also alleged that security agencies have maintained a “loud silence” on the incidents, implying tacit government endorsement.

Awuku claimed that no one involved in the violent acts has been arrested, despite being captured on tape.

“The noisy silence of law enforcement agencies gives us the impression that these operatives and those who acted in that manner had the tacit endorsement of government,” he noted.

Aubynn won the Ablekuma North parliamentary election after a re-run of voting at 19 polling stations, which was marred by brutal assaults, including one on former MP Mavis Hawa Koomson.

The minority staged a walkout during Aubynn’s swearing-in to protest what Sammy Awuku referred to as “blood-tainted” victory.

Bibiani deserves CAF matches – MP pushes for sports infrastructure to boost socioeconomic development

The Member of Parliament for Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai, Bright Asamoah Brefo, has called for the construction of a modern sports stadium in Bibiani to enable the Western North Region to host continental football matches, following the historic Ghana Premier League victory by Bibiani Goldstars FC in the 2024/2025 season.

In a statement delivered during parliamentary proceedings on Monday, July 21, 2025, Brefo celebrated the remarkable achievement of Bibiani Goldstars FC, which clinched its maiden Ghana Premier League title with a commanding 4-0 victory over Accra Lions at Dun’s Park on June 8, 2025.

This triumph secured their qualification for the 2025/26 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League, marking a significant milestone for the club and the Western North Region.

“Mr. Speaker, this is no ordinary success. It is a legacy-defining moment, a triumph of vision, hard work, and unity,” he stated.

He highlighted the collective spirit of the Bibiani community, including its youth, traditional leaders, and corporate partners like Asante Gold, in achieving this feat. The MP also paid tribute to the late Ayigbe, a loyal supporter, and acknowledged the invaluable support of Nananom and the club’s management under Coach Stephen Frimpong Manso.

However, the MP expressed concern that Bibiani Goldstars will be unable to host CAF Champions League matches at their home ground, Dun’s Park, due to the lack of a stadium meeting the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.

According to him, the team is considering playing their continental matches at either the Accra Sports Stadium or the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, with the latter likely to be chosen after necessary upgrades—a situation he described as unacceptable.

He emphasized the missed economic, social, and emotional benefits for Bibiani and the Western North Region, such as increased tourism, local commerce growth, job creation, and regional pride.

He urged the government to prioritize the construction of a modern sports stadium in Bibiani, equipped with adequate seating, dressing rooms, floodlights, media facilities, and accommodation for visiting teams.

“Mr. Speaker, this situation is unacceptable. I therefore rise to strongly advocate for the immediate construction of a modern sports stadium in Bibiani—a regional sports infrastructure that can serve as a hub for not only football but also athletics, youth development, and national sporting activities.

“This must not be a temporary fix. We need a stadium with proper seating capacity, dressing rooms, floodlights, media facilities, and accommodation for visiting teams. The people of Bibiani and the Western North have proven they are ready. It is now the turn of the nation to match their dedication with the investment they deserve,” he said.

The MP stressed that such infrastructure would not only support football but also serve as a hub for athletics, youth development, and national sporting activities.

“The people of Bibiani and the Western North have proven they are ready. It is now the turn of the nation to match their dedication with the investment they deserve,” he added.

Bright Asamoah Brefo also appealed to Parliament to include Bibiani Goldstars FC in this year’s Democracy Cup, a parliamentary-organized football event, as a fitting way to honor their historic victory and showcase their talent on a national stage.

“There could be no better way to reward merit and inspire more youth across Ghana,” he noted.

Bibiani Goldstars became the third consecutive team from the Western North Region to win the Premier League, following Medeama SC (2022/23) and FC Samartex (2023/24).

The Chief Executive Officer of MKNet Consulting LLC and EMATECH Academy Incorporated, Mr Ebako Mukwele, has advised aspiring journalists to embrace new technologies to remain competitive in the job market.

Speaking at the Futuristic Africa Youth and Technology Symposium held in Accra on monday, Mr Mukwele emphasised the growing importance of digital skills in modern journalism, noting that the industry is rapidly evolving and requires professionals who can adapt to emerging tools and platforms.

The Symposium aim to explore the information technology in shaping the skills and knowledge, and opportunities for 21st-century students with innovative IT solutions for sustainable development.

The program was organised in collaboration with the Faculty of Journalism and Media Studies (FOJAMS) at the University of Media, Arts and Communications- Institute of Journalism (UniMAC-IJ)

This was dubbed “Ignite change and empowering the 21st century students with innovative IT solutions for sustainable development.”

“It is essential for students to build a strong foundation in basic computing skills, as these competencies are increasingly critical in today’s digital world. Proficiency in areas such as word processing, spreadsheets, internet navigation, and basic troubleshooting not only enhances academic performance but also prepares students for a wide range of career opportunities.

Chinese firms explore opportunities under Ghana’s 24-hr economy programme

0

The Chinese Embassy in Ghana, in partnership with the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Secretariat, hosted a high-level China–Ghana Business Engagement in Accra.

It brought together senior officials from Ghanaian institutions and major Chinese private sector players to explore strategic partnerships aligned with the 24H+ Programme, the government’s flagship agenda to industrialise the economy, expand exports, and create decent jobs at scale.

The engagement focused on how the 24-Hour Economy was being implemented and the role of the private sector, and Chinese investors in particular, in delivering results.

The Presidential Adviser on the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development, Mr Goosie Tanoh, in an address, emphasised that the focus of the engagement was not policy declarations, but delivery.

“We are building a portfolio of coordinated projects that will bring the Programme to life and deliver real value for Ghana,” he said.

“We have completed concept notes for our first 20 priority projects and are now commencing feasibility studies that will make each one bankable and investment-ready,” he added.

Mr Tanoh also reaffirmed the depth of Ghana–China relations, noting that “the China-Ghana relationship is longstanding and multifaceted, dating back to our struggle for independence and the collaboration between Chairman Mao, Premier Zhou, and our late President Nkrumah.”

Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, underscored the alignment between the 24H+ vision and China’s development cooperation strategy in Africa.

“China remains Ghana’s largest trading partner and a major source of foreign investment. In 2024, bilateral trade reached an unprecedented high of 11.8 billion US Dollars, marking a year-on-year growth of 7.1 per cent. Bilateral trade from January to May 2025 reached 5.28 billion US Dollars, an increase of 8.9 per cent year-on-year.

In 2024, China’s direct investment in Ghana amounted to 62.15 million US Dollars, spanning multiple sectors and wide-ranging fields, creating substantial employment opportunities locally and assisting Ghana in advancing its

industrialisation,” he added.

Mr Alexander Kofi-Mensah Mould, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), assured Chinese investors of MiDA’s role in ensuring the transparent and efficient execution of government-led projects. “MiDA will oversee the end-to-end scoping and procurement of projects, ensuring we partner with the right service providers to deliver on time and within budget,” Mr Mould said.

The Chinese private sector was strongly represented, with over 50 business leaders in attendance from major firms and industry associations operating across Ghana.

Participants on both sides expressed satisfaction with the structured, data-driven approach of the Programme and the clarity of Ghana’s investment roadmap.

The meeting reaffirmed China’s role as a strategic partner in Ghana’s long-term transformation and confirmed investor appetite to participate in the delivery of priority projects under the 24-Hour Economy.

Patricia Appiagyei rejects replacing Afenyo-Markin on ECOWAS Parliament delegation

0

Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei has rejected her nomination to serve on Ghana’s reconstituted delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament.

Appiagyei, who was nominated as a replacement for Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, raised concerns about the process and its implications for unity within the Minority Caucus.

In a memorandum submitted to the Speaker of Parliament on July 22, 2025, the Asokwa MP stated that she was not consulted prior to her selection.

She described the development as “procedurally inappropriate” and cautioned that such unilateral decisions could fuel internal tensions.

“There was an understanding by leadership that the Minority Leader would be on the ECOWAS Parliament delegation, as was communicated to the Committee of Selection.

“It is therefore deeply troubling that a contrary nomination was advanced on the floor without consultation,” the memo read in part.

She emphasised that the Effutu MP, who was sworn in as a member and Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament last year, retains a valid and ongoing mandate under ECOWAS protocols, which grant members a four-year term.

“A sitting member cannot be removed unless the member voluntarily resigns, is removed from office, appointed to the Executive or as a Judge, or otherwise becomes ineligible,” she noted, adding that none of these conditions applied to the Minority Leader.

While acknowledging efforts to enhance female representation in regional bodies, Madam Appiagyei warned against using gender parity as a cover for politically motivated decisions.

“True inclusion must be built on transparent dialogue and not imposed at the expense of established norms,” she wrote.

She has therefore requested the withdrawal of her name from the resolution and asked that Parliament rescind the decision.

She further urged Speaker Alban Bagbin to maintain the original nominees: Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Asante-Akim Central MP Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, and Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I reiterate that the resolution that has my name as a nominated member for the delegation to ECOWAS Parliament be stayed. The House should take steps to rescind such a decision since I do not intend to accept the offer made to me by the House.

“By this memo, I am refusing to be part of such a delegation and pray that the Clerk to Parliament does not communicate any such resolution to the ECOWAS Parliament that includes my name,” she added.

Mining companies want Growth and Sustainability Levy reduced to 1%

0

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has called on the government to reconsider the increase in the growth and sustainability level from 1% to 3% ahead of the upcoming mid-year budget review.

According to the Chamber, the current rate presents a major challenge for some mining companies, particularly smaller operators that do not generate as much revenue as their larger counterparts.

This disparity makes it difficult for them to meet the 3% levy requirement.

Speaking at a recent press briefing in Accra on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey stressed that reducing the levy would bring greater stability to the mining sector and serve as an incentive for further investment.

“There have been conversations about the Growth and Sustainability Levy. Our hope is that, it would be reduced in the mid-year budget. The macro-economy is pointing to the right direction. The strength of the Cedi currently is predominantly based on gold,” he said.

“Last year, through the domestic gold purchase program, we sold 358,218 ounces (ca. 13,540 kg) of gold to the Bank of Ghana. In addition, we continue to support the bank through the Voluntary Forex and Gold Purchase Initiative, which has helped boost the country’s reserves and strengthen the Cedi.”

Dr. Ashigbey emphasised the importance of recognising the mining sector’s contribution to the economy and urged policymakers to consider its sustainability in future decisions.

Alhassan Tampuli accuses Attorney General of selective justice

Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli has accused Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayini of exercising selective prosecutorial powers.

Tampuli alleged that the Attorney General is engaging in “Operation Clear All Loots,” and also shielding former appointees of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration from accountability.

This scathing attack follows the Attorney General’s announcement to drop charges against former Finance Minister Dr Kwabena Duffour and seven others.

Reacting to this development on Citi News on Tuesday, July 22 2025, Tampuli described the decision as part of the Attorney General’s selective justice pattern, noting that Dr Ayini had previously dropped charges against members of the ruling party pursued by his predecessor.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General has pressed charges against some members of the previous Nana Addo administration, accusing them of corruption and financial embezzlement.

Tampuli criticized Dr Ayine’s approach, stating that the focus has shifted from “accountability to impunity” and shielding appointees of the previous administration.

“We find this very worrying, especially given the background of Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL). What we’re seeing today appears to be something akin to Operation Clear All Loots,” Tampuli added

The Criticism is Too Much – Agyapong’s Wife Breaks Silence After Backlash Over Moesha Boduong Video

0

The wife of Ghanaian politician Kennedy Agyapong, Mrs. Lilian Agyapong, has finally spoken out after facing intense criticism for sharing a video of herself feeding socialite Moesha Boduong. The clip, which went viral, sparked mixed reactions, with many Ghanaians questioning her motives, while others defended her act of kindness.

In an emotional response, Mrs. Agyapong expressed shock at the backlash, stating, *”The criticism is too much. I was only trying to help someone in need.”* She explained that her encounter with Moesha was spontaneous and driven by compassion, not publicity. *”I didn’t expect such negativity for a simple gesture of feeding someone who looked hungry,”* she added.

The controversy stems from Moesha Boduong’s recent struggles, including her admission of financial difficulties and health challenges. While some praised Mrs. Agyapong for her generosity, others accused her of exploiting Moesha’s situation for attention, given her husband’s past public disputes with the socialite. Kennedy Agyapong had previously criticized Moesha for her lifestyle choices, making the video even more contentious.

Moesha, however, has since thanked Mrs. Agyapong for the kindness, dismissing claims of exploitation. *”People should stop reading negativity into everything,”* she posted on social media.

Public opinion remains divided, with some Ghanaians calling for more empathy, while others insist the act was performative. Social media analyst Nana Aba Anamoah weighed in, urging critics to *”focus on the act of kindness rather than unnecessary suspicions.”*

As the debate continues, Mrs. Agyapong says she remains undeterred and will continue to help those in need, regardless of public opinion.

This Disease Is African, Not American

0

In a bizarre and satirical twist that has set the internet ablaze, former U.S. President Donald J. Trump has once again stirred controversy—this time by blaming South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for his health condition.

Speaking during what can only be described as an unusual and puffed-up Oval Office press briefing, Trump claimed his battle with chronic venous insufficiency is directly tied to his interactions with Ramaphosa. “It’s getting worse. Every time I think about Ramaphosa, boom, the ankles swell up again,” he declared, struggling to fit his swollen feet into a pair of visibly strained leather shoes.

Sporting an inflated appearance, the former president sat awkwardly at the Resolute Desk, his face flushed and ankles ballooned like overstuffed cushions. “Doctors say it’s chronic… but I say it’s Cyril,” he added, suggesting—without a trace of irony—that the condition is somehow African in origin. “This disease is African, not American,” he insisted, fueling mockery and confusion online.

The comments, while clearly part of a satirical commentary, poke fun at Trump’s tendency to assign blame for personal or political problems to foreign figures or nations. Social media users have already turned the press conference into a meme-fest, with images of Trump’s swollen feet and dramatic gestures going viral within hours.

While no official statement has been issued by President Ramaphosa or the South African government, political observers say the comments are not to be taken literally, but rather as another example of Trump’s flair for theatrics and his ability to grab headlines—swollen or not.

The incident, though fictional and comedic in tone, highlights the strained and often theatrical tone of political discourse between world leaders in the modern media age.

Attorney-General discontinues case against Duffuor, 7 others – Recovers required funds

0

The state has entered a nolle prosequi in the case in which a former Minister of Finance and founder of uniBank Ghana Ltd, Dr Kwabena Duffuor, and seven others are standing trial in the banking sector clean-up in 2017.

The Office of the Attorney-General explained that the central objective of the prosecution (part of a broader set of prosecutions arising out of the financial sector clean-up exercise which the state had been undertaking since the year 2018) had been to ensure accountability for public funds.

More importantly, they were to recover losses occasioned to the State through various alleged acts of financial impropriety.

A statement issued yesterday and signed by the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, said in pursuit of that objective, the Office of the Attorney General, in collaboration with other relevant State agencies, established a threshold of 60 per cent recovery of the alleged losses to the State as a condition for reconsidering prosecution in specific cases.

It said following prolonged negotiations and engagements, the accused persons in the case of “The Republic v. Kwabena Duffuor & 7 Others” had met the recovery threshold.

“Accordingly, in furtherance of public interest, and considering the significant recoveries made for the State, the Honourable Attorney-General has satisfied himself that continuing with the prosecution will not serve any additional public purpose,” the statement added.

It explained that the decision, however, did not imply an absence of wrongdoing nor a vindication of any conduct, saying, “It is a pragmatic step in line with the overarching national interest of recovering State resources.”

The Office of the Attorney-General said the exercise of the prosecutorial discretion required no explanation under law. However, the Attorney-General, in the spirit of accountability and transparency, considered it appropriate to provide the public with the rationale behind this decision.

“The Honourable Attorney-General remains resolute in his commitment to upholding the rule of law, protecting the public purse, and pursuing justice in all matters of national importance,” the statement said.

The case between the state and Dr Duffuor, and seven others, is in relation to the financial sector clean-up exercise initiated by the government on August 14, 2017.

The collapse of the 420 financial institutions affected cost GH¢26.05 billion.

The figure was exclusive of the closure of 50 Fund Management Companies regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission, which accounted for an additional GH¢10 billion.

Some popular financial institutions that were affected were UT Bank, Capital Bank, UniBank, Heritage Bank, Royal Bank, BEIGE and GN Bank.

The case centred around allegations of financial impropriety, breach of duty, and causing financial loss to the state.

Dr Duffuor, who owned the collapsed UniBank and subsidiaries, and the other accused persons were alleged to have played a role in the collapse of several financial institutions, including banks, savings and loans companies, and microfinance institutions, during the clean-up exercise.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) government then said that the actions of the accused persons led to significant financial losses and undermined the stability of the financial sector.

It argued that the accused persons failed to exercise due diligence and prudence in their roles, resulting in the collapse of several financial institutions.

The government then also argued that, the cleanup would strengthen the financial sector, protect depositors and restore confidence in the economy.

The defendants, however, denied any wrongdoing and argued that their actions were in accordance with established policies and procedures.

NPP’s Divine Agorhom rules out third term bid as Greater Accra Chairman

0

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Divine Otoo Agorhom, has announced that he will not be seeking re-election in the party’s upcoming internal elections.

“No, I’m not running again this time. It is a decision that I have taken. I have done two terms,” he stated.

He added that he was now “looking to other interests” as part of his broader political considerations.

He said this in an interview with Channel One TV on Tuesday, 22 July.

Mr Agorhom’s decision comes at a time when the NPP is undergoing internal restructuring following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The party has since embarked on a series of reforms aimed at rebuilding its base and strengthening its appeal ahead of future electoral contests.

Having served two consecutive terms, Mr Agorhom played a key role in directing the party’s campaign operations in the Greater Accra Region, a critical battleground widely seen as decisive in national elections.

Volta Regional House of Chiefs demands removal of immigration posts at Asikuma and Sogakope

The President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs (VRHC), Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, has called for the immediate removal of two inland immigration checkpoints at Asikuma and Sogakope, as well as a police barrier at Juapong.

Speaking during a general meeting of the House in Ho, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV described the security posts as unnecessary and disruptive, arguing that they serve no meaningful purpose for travellers and often result in undue harassment of passengers, including traditional leaders and dignitaries.
