CPP will form government in 2032 – Captain Smart

0

By Simon Agbovi

Kasoa (C/R), June 16, GNA – Mr Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has made a strong commitment to ensuring that the Convention People’s Party (CPP) secures victory in the 2032 elections in Ghana.

He made the promise at a program organised in remembrance of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

The event held by three youth wings of the CPP; National Youth League, the CPP Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, and the CPP TESCHART, UG Branch, was led by Mr Afelik  Agoba.

Mr Smart noted that the CPP was returning in full force to make the party more attractive to the Ghanaian populace.

Outlining plans of the party, he said the CPP would restore confidence among Ghanaian voters and financiers through strategic, transparent, and accountable governance structures.

Additionally, the party aimed to ignite national consciousness and pride through visionary messaging and grassroots mobilisation.

“We will reclaim political power in 2032. We must reclaim power in 2032,” he affirmed.

According to him, the CPP was determined to develop the country through self-determination, industrialisation, and human-centered development.

“Now is the time to rise, if indeed we want to rescue this country, not with anger but with urgency.

“…not with fear but with faith, not with empty talk but with collective action. This is the hour of destiny, this is the moment Ghanaians must look within and say, ‘enough is enough,’ Ghana must rise again.”

He stated that the CPP’s political decline was Ghana’s delay, and its rise would mark Ghana’s renewal.

He proposed several initiatives, including building a strong social media presence, launching a website and an app, and instituting an annual Kwame Nkrumah lecture, among others.

Bibiani Gold Stars FC players and coaches celebrate their league victory

BIBIANI GOLD STARS FC made history on Saturday, June 14, 2025, as they were officially crowned champions of the 2024–25 Ghana Premier League — the first title in the club’s 27-year existence.

The coronation unfolded at a packed Duns Park, where the Miners played out a symbolic 0-0 draw against regional rivals Medeama SC.

Though the league had been sealed a week earlier following a commanding 4–0 victory over Accra Lions, the game marked a celebration of a dream season.

What followed was more than a football match — it was a carnival of community pride. Fans flooded the stadium and streets, draped in the club’s green and yellow, singing, dancing, and relishing the moment that had eluded them for nearly three decades.

Led by captain Yakubu Dzia Ull-Haqq and head coach Frimpong Manso, Gold Stars hoisted the Premier League trophy in front of thousands, with music, fireworks, and jubilation lighting up Bibiani deep into the night.

The club’s meteoric rise this season has captivated fans nationwide, turning Duns Park into a fortress and Bibiani into a city of champions.

With the title secured, Gold Stars now shift their focus to the continental stage. They will represent Ghana in the 2025–26 CAF Champions League, hoping to carry their domestic dominance into Africa’s elite club competition.

But for now, Bibiani celebrates a golden moment built on hard work, unity, and unrelenting belief.

GJA applauds President Mahama for reversing closure of 64 radio stations

“If you cannot marry at 16? Why have sex at 16?” – Justice Adjei punches holes in Ghana’s laws

0

Supreme Court judge nominee Justice Dennis Dominic Adjei has delivered a thought-provoking critique of Ghana’s legal framework, questioning the apparent inconsistency between the legal age for marriage and the age of sexual consent.

During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, June 16, 2025, Justice Adjei posed a poignant rhetorical question that highlighted a complex societal and legal conundrum:

“If you cannot marry at 16? Why have sex at 16?”

Justice Adjei’s comment directly challenges the different age thresholds stipulated by various Ghanaian laws.

While Ghana’s Children’s Act of 1998 sets the minimum age for marriage at 18 years for both males and females, the Criminal Offences Act of 1960 pegs the age of sexual consent at 16 years.

This disparity means that a 16-year-old in Ghana can legally consent to sexual activity but is legally too young to enter into marriage.

The nominee’s inquiry brings to the forefront a long-standing debate among legal experts, child rights advocates, and social workers.

Critics argue that this legal gap creates vulnerabilities for minors, contributing to issues such as teenage pregnancies, child abandonment, and defilement that may not be adequately prosecuted if consensual sex at 16 is permitted while marriage is not.

Justice Adjei’s line of questioning during his vetting by the Appointments Committee, which scrutinises nominees’ legal philosophies, understanding of the law, and views on critical societal issues, suggests a call for a review and potential harmonisation of these legal ages.

His remarks are expected to reignite discussions on how best to protect young people in Ghana and ensure that legal provisions are consistent and serve the best interests of children.

The vetting process for Justice Adjei, a seasoned jurist known for his contributions to judicial training and human rights law, continues as Parliament assesses his suitability for a seat on the nation’s highest court.

Report finds gold smuggling cost Ghana $11bn in five years

0

Dakar — Ghana is losing billions of dollars in revenue annually to smuggling from its booming artisanal gold mining sector with much of the gold flowing to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to a report by nonprofit Swissaid.

The report found a staggering 229 tonnes trade gap, equivalent to $11.4bn, between Ghana’s gold exports and corresponding imports over just five years, with most of the smuggled gold ending up in Dubai.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg,” said Ulf Laessing, head of the Sahel programme at Germany’s Konrad Adenauer Foundation, who analyses insurgency and artisanal mining operations in the region.

“Hand-carried gold does not have to be declared in Dubai … informal gold is mostly brought in on flights,” highlighting other opaque ways Africa’s gold is smuggled into the UAE.

The Swissaid report said Ghana’s gold is largely smuggled to Togo before ending up in Dubai while some bullion passes through Burkina Faso into Mali, using porous borders.

A senior official at Ghana’s regulatory Minerals Commission described Swissaid’s findings as “a notorious fact”.

Ghana’s finance ministry did not respond to a request for comment.

The report noted how a 3% withholding tax on artisanal gold exports imposed by Africa’s top gold producer in 2019 backfired dramatically, as declared exports collapsed while smuggling surged.

The government’s reduction of the tax to 1.5% in 2022 partially reversed the trend, with formal exports rebounding.

In March, Ghana’s finance minister scrapped the tax, subsequently praising policy reforms for a surge in artisanal exports this year.

An estimated 34 tonnes of the country’s 2023 gold output were undeclared — about the same amount recorded as the country’s total artisanal production for that year, according to the Swissaid report released on June 11.

Slow reforms

Ghana earned $11.6bn in revenue from gold exports last year and has stepped up reforms to centralise and clean up the trade.

Its experience mirrors a continent-wide pattern where Africa’s gold-producing nations consistently report lower exports than what importing countries, particularly the UAE, declare as receipts. Reforms by Dubai to curb gold smuggling have yielded limited results.

Informal mining provides livelihoods for more than 10-million people in Sub-Saharan Africa, according to a May UN report, but increasingly it serves as a funding channel for organised crime and armed conflict.

“While the new government has shown some willingness to fix some governance issues that have bedevilled the gold sector for years, and which were largely ignored by the previous administration, its pace has been quite slow,” said Bright Simons of Accra-based think-tank Imani Center for Policy and Education.

Fuel price hike looms despite current stability – IES warns

IES says Ghana may experience a fuel price hike within the next two weeks IES says Ghana may experience a fuel price hike within the next two weeks

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has cautioned that Ghana may experience a fuel price hike within the next two weeks, despite current stability in pump prices.

According to Nana Amoasi VII, Executive Director of IES, ongoing tensions in the Middle East are likely to drive up global petroleum prices, which could eventually affect fuel costs in Ghana.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, June 16, 2025, he noted that prices may remain stable, or even drop slightly, in the short term, but warned that a reversal is likely.

“We are going to experience some stability or even a drop in fuel prices from today going forward. However, because prices have started skyrocketing on the global market, we must prepare for a possible hike in the next two weeks,” he stated.

He added that while Ghana has limited control over global market trends, diplomatic efforts to resolve geopolitical tensions could help ease prices in the future.

Scrap ‘Dumsor’ levy completely – Oppong Nkrumah tells government

0

The Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi and Ranking Member on Parliament’s Committee on Economy and Development, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has called on the government to go beyond merely suspending the controversial 8% ‘Dumsor’ levy and scrap it entirely.

Speaking in response to the government’s recent decision to halt implementation of the energy sector levy, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah argued that the move exposes deeper flaws in Ghana’s fiscal planning.

He said the suspension confirms what the Minority had warned from the outset — that the levy would raise fuel prices and was premised on flawed assumptions about global oil price stability.

“We are asking that government should scrap it altogether because the government doesn’t really need this levy,” he stated.

The levy, intended to raise GH¢5.7 billion to support energy sector interventions, drew strong criticism from the public, industry players, and the Minority, which questioned its timing and necessity.

According to Mr. Oppong Nkrumah, the real issue lies not in revenue generation alone but in the government’s broader fiscal strategy.

He pointed to an earlier projection by the Minority that the removal of selected taxes without corresponding expenditure cuts would create a GH¢6 billion hole in the 2025 budget — an estimate that closely mirrors the GH¢5.7 billion shortfall the levy sought to fill.

“Let me give you some history. In 2017, the NPP administration removed about 17 taxes, and we lost the revenues from them. We tried to close the gap, but because we could not conclusively do it, our buffers were limited. So when global shocks hit, we were left at the losing end.

And that’s why we’re saying to our friends in government, do not repeat this mistake. We should use this period not for blame or praise, but to conduct a comprehensive and transparent review of the revenue lines as a country, with the view to developing sustainable, reliable fiscal resilience.”

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah stressed that the government must seize the opportunity to initiate a comprehensive evaluation of the efficiency and equity of the country’s revenue mobilisation mechanisms, emphasising the need for a transparent, sustainable, and citizen-sensitive approach to public finance that enhances Ghana’s long-term fiscal resilience.

“This is not just about scrapping a levy. It’s about building a revenue system that is agile, fair, and capable of delivering tangible results for the Ghanaian people,” he added.

“We on the Minority side will support any such effort with the lessons we have learned, with the ideas and our suggestions. Ghana doesn’t need just the scrapping of these levies. Ghana needs levies that are sustainable, that make sense and that deliver results for her people.

And we on the Minority will do our best to contribute to those ideas,” he concluded.

Judiciary not financially independent – Justice Dzamefe

0

Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has expressed misgivings about the judiciary’s continued financial dependence on the executive and legislature, despite constitutional provisions guaranteeing its independence.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, June 16, Justice Dzamefe argued that the judiciary’s autonomy is undermined by its reliance on allocations determined through the national budget process.

“When it comes to the judiciary, yes, we are independent, administratively, yes, we are independent, but financially we are not because you [Parliament] give us money—when the budget comes to you, you give what you think we need,” he told the committee.

Justice Dzamefe said the judiciary’s inability to control its own finances limits its effectiveness and exposes it to potential interference, thereby weakening the principle of separation of powers.

He stressed that full judicial independence requires not only freedom in decision-making and administration, but also financial autonomy.

“A lot has to be done to ensure the judiciary does its work without any hindrances,” he noted.

His comments come amid renewed calls for comprehensive reforms to strengthen democratic institutions, improve transparency, and bolster the independence of the judiciary.

Justice Dzamefe’s vetting is part of an ongoing process to confirm nominees to the Supreme Court as submitted by President John Dramani Mahama in April.

‘Staggering double standards’ – Minority Leader criticises NDC on SC judge appointments

0

The Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has slammed the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) over President John Dramani Mahama’s nomination of seven Court of Appeal justices for appointment to the Supreme Court.

Speaking at the commencement of the vetting of the seven justices on Monday, June 16, 2025, Afenyo-Markin, who is the Ranking Member of the Appointments Committee of Parliament, accused the NDC of being hypocritical.

He said that the ruling party, when it was in opposition, accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government led by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of packing the court anytime judges were appointed and even rejected the appointment of two Supreme Court justice nominees.

“This government’s double standard is staggering. The same NDC that relentlessly opposed Justice Sophia Bernasko Essah and Professor Richard Frempong Oppong’s nomination under President Akufo-Addo, crying that the court was bloated, now presents seven nominees simultaneously.

“Where was their concern about court size then? This gross dishonesty and rank opportunism insult our intelligence and constitutional processes. When two very qualified justices sought appointment, the NDC screamed about judicial bloating. Now with seven nominees, they discover urgent constitutional necessity.”

He added, “Such breathtaking inconsistency exposes an administration driven by political calculation, not constitutional principle.”

The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, refuted the Minority Leader’s claim of hypocrisy on the part of his party over the nomination of the seven judges.

He explained that the rejection of the nominations of Justice Sophia Bernasko Essah and Professor Richard Frempong Oppong was because there was no immediate vacancy on the bench.

He also indicated that the opposition to their nomination, which was days before the 2024 general election, was to allow the next government the opportunity to fill the vacancy that would arise in the court due to the pending retirement of some of the justices.

Directive to print textbooks locally laudable-GPPCA

0

Accra, June 16, GNA – The Ghana Printers and Paper Converters Association (GPPCA) has commended President John Dramani Mahama for the directive to print textbooks locally.

The Association is an umbrella body that embodies goods and services producers in the paper and packaging industry in Ghana.

President Mahama’s initiative seeks to introduce the Education Revolution to end the textbook shortage crisis due to failure to provide textbooks after changing the curriculum in recent years.

A statement issued in Accra said the policy directive aimed at transforming Ghana’s education.
The Association recounted President Mahama’s statement “This no-textbook phenomenon will end this year … that these textbooks are going to be printed by Ghanaian printers so that money stays here in Ghana.”

It said this synced with a study commissioned by GPPCA in 2014 on the local investors and selected counterparts abroad in the industry, their needs, and their interests.

The study highlighted a clear understanding of the local market for printing and paper converting, including regulations, demand, competition, challenges and potential investors.

“To this end, the GPPCA is determined to pursue the report recommendations,” he said.
It called for a complete removal of all pre-production tariffs to enable local printing firms to compete fairly with their foreign counterparts.

The statement said adoption of the UNESCO Convention that made provisions for the governments to suspend or set aside any agreement, if because of the implementation of the agreement, more books were imported into a country to cause dislocation in the local printing industry.

It said the government must take advantage of this provision to impose some levies on imported books, thus providing stability within the local printing industry.

“With the government sector forming up to 70 per cent of total demand of the printing industry in Ghana, it is important that the government fully implements the Textbook Policy (2005) by ensuring that 100 per cent of printing contracts are awarded to local printing firms,” it said.

It said the printing industry had already shown what it was capable of and in a previous major contract cycle, only three out of many capable local printers managed to produce and deliver the entire consignment, proving technical competence, operational readiness, and national commitment.

The statement said significantly, the 24-hour economy concept was manifested in the printing and paper conversion or packaging sectors, given that printers could work in the envisaged 3-eight-hour shift system, given that most printing and package production companies were under-utilizing their capacity, with machines lying idle for want of printing and packaging job contracts.

Ideally, the industry could increase employment rates by about 40 per cent if they were awarded significant volumes of printing contracts existing in the Ghanaian economy, but which currently were sourced from abroad, despite the availability of local capacity.

Generally, the benefits of investing in the printing and paper converting industry include – market demand; profitability and tax mobilization; the potential for growth; job creation; amidst societal impact and contribution to the local economy.

The statement said the prospects of further investment in the local printing and paper converting industry were enormous and signified the potential stretch of Ghanaian producers to capture the West African paper print and packaging market.

The Association sought support from government in the areas of passing an instrument or a presidential directive approved by parliament to use only local factories for the supply of all government and institution printing materials needs such as textbooks, exercise books, and other printed materials.

“Cancel all exemptions for companies that import finished printed materials such as jackets, boxes or packaging materials. Hence, they must pay import duties and VAT,” it added.

The statement said that the government would create a favorable environment to help local printers and converters to grow, employ more people, pay more taxes and create wealth and paper converters, commonly referred to as print, packaging, and labeling manufacturers transform paper and polymer-based raw materials into safe, durable, and aesthetically pleasing containers and receptacles.

It said although the industry played a crucial role across multiple sectors, its vast economic and developmental potential remained largely underutilized.

It called for more proactive policy measures and strategic investment to unlock the full potential of this vital industry.

GPPCA is committed to building strong relationships with key stakeholders, particularly the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education, and other industry partners to effectively advocate for, and sustain trust and support for the effective implementation of the President’s revolutionary drive.

“Indeed, a home-grown solution to provide adequate textbooks, among other logistics, for the effective and efficient running of the education sector,” It added.

Ghana closes embassy in Tehran over escalation of Israel-Iran conflict

0

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, confirmed the development via a social media update, noting that the Mahama-led administration is taking swift action to evacuate all Ghanaians residing in Iran.

“The Mahama administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” Mr Ablakwa posted.

He further stated: “To guarantee the safety of our embassy staff, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect.”

According to the minister, evacuation efforts are already in progress through Iran’s land borders and will cover Ghanaian diplomats, students, and professionals.

In addition to the actions taken in Iran, the minister disclosed that the government is closely monitoring the situation in Israel and may take further steps if necessary.

“In the interim, we have instructed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be reduced to the barest minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department,” he said.

The government reiterated its commitment to the safety and wellbeing of Ghanaian citizens abroad and renewed its call for a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict.

Mr Ablakwa assured that “every effort is being made to ensure the safe passage of all affected persons.”

The closure of the Tehran mission is part of broader precautionary measures being implemented as tensions rise in the Middle East.

Sticker of Adom Kyei Duah on defeated boxer’s shorts sparks reactions online

Joseph Sackey was clad in blue shorts adorned with the pastor’s image Joseph Sackey was clad in blue shorts adorned with the pastor’s image

The recently held Battle of the Beasts boxing event at Bukom Boxing Arena has sparked a wave of reactions after a boxer was spotted wearing shorts bearing the sticker of popular preacher Stephen Adom Kyei Duah and ended up losing by knockout.

Joseph Sackey, clad in blue shorts adorned with the pastor’s image, suffered a fifth-round defeat to Abdul Khan on Saturday, June 14, 2025, in front of a packed arena.

While the arena buzzed with excitement, reactions quickly turned to the sticker on Sackey’s attire.

Scores of netizens speculated that the boxer was rather relying on spiritual protection instead of rigorous training.

“This is about more training, getting better and getting ready for the fight, not praying to God or just stickers,” one user wrote.

“No be say he lost the fight ooo, there was no fight. Ebi beating soorrn,” another stated.

Others, however, called on athletes to prioritize preparation over spiritual shortcuts.

The event was organised by Legacy Rise Sport, led by Sharaf Mahama, in collaboration with former world champion Amir Khan.

Ken Ofori-Atta undergoes successful cancer surgery in US – Wife confirms

0

Ken Ofori-Atta is a former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta is a former Minister of Finance

Ghana’s former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, has successfully undergone prostate cancer surgery in the United States, his wife, Professor Angela Ofori-Atta, has confirmed in a statement.

The operation, which involved a robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy, was performed on Friday, June 13, 2025, at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

The procedure is said to have lasted over four hours.

“The doctors are pleased with how the procedure went and will now place him on a postoperative regime,” Professor Angela Ofori-Atta stated.

She added that, despite the emotional strain, her husband is coping well and remains focused on regaining his strength.

“Our family is truly grateful for the support and prayers of many people and pastors,” she noted.

The announcement brings clarity to Ken Ofori-Atta’s recent absence from legal proceedings back in Ghana, where he is under investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over alleged corruption and procurement breaches during his tenure from 2017 to 2024.

The OSP had earlier revealed that Ken Ofori-Atta missed multiple summons, prompting his designation as a fugitive in February 2025.

That label was then lifted temporarily after his legal team assured the office that he would appear for questioning on June 2, 2025.

However, that commitment was not fulfilled, leading the OSP to renew the wanted status.

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng told journalists on June 2, 2025, that the former minister’s team had cited a cancer diagnosis and upcoming treatment in a letter dated May 28, 2025.

While the diagnosis was acknowledged, the OSP insisted it had not received sufficient documentation to justify his continued non-appearance.

Ken Ofori-Atta is being investigated in connection with the controversial Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) contract and the financing of the stalled National Cathedral project.

‘Nobody buys just one litre of fuel’ – Ebenezer Nartey speaks on GH¢1 fuel levy

0

Ebenezer Nartey is a former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central Ebenezer Nartey is a former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central

Former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Ebenezer Nartey, has stirred debate after strongly arguing that no one buys just one litre of fuel at the pump, a point he used to challenge critics of the recent fuel levy.

Appearing on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning show on June 16, 2025, the former lawmaker clashed with co-panellist Roseline over how ordinary Ghanaians purchase fuel.

Nartey questioned the practicality of claims that the new levy would hurt those buying minimal quantities.

“Who goes to the filling station and buys just one litre of fuel? Or diesel? Let’s be honest!” he stated.

Roseline, however, pushed back, insisting that some commercial drivers and motorbike users often buy fuel in litres, sometimes even carrying containers (gallons) to purchase small quantities.

But Nartey wasn’t convinced, warning that dishonesty in such discussions could lead to judgment.

“Whatever we do today, we’ll be accountable to God one day,” he argued.

The exchange, though lighthearted at moments, highlighted deeper frustrations surrounding fuel prices, tax policy, and economic hardship.

While Nartey emphasised that the fuel levy is minor, critics argue that for many struggling Ghanaians, every pesewa counts.

‘Muscle pull led to referee change for FA Cup final’ – Committee Chair explains

0

Selorm Yao Bless was withdrawn as centre referee for the FA Cup final after picking up an injury Selorm Yao Bless was withdrawn as centre referee for the FA Cup final after picking up an injury

Chairman of the MTN FA Cup Committee, Wilson Arthur, has shed light on the late officiating switch that saw Latif Adaari take charge of the 2025 FA Cup final between Asante Kotoko and Golden Kick, replacing originally appointed referee, Selorm Yao Bless.

Bless was initially appointed by the Ghana Football Association as the main referee for the crunch encounter. However, Adaari was rather seen officiating the game, causing some unrest amongst fans.

Speaking on Sporty FM on June 16, 2025, Arthur explained that Bless was forced to withdraw just before kickoff due to a muscle injury sustained during the warm-up session at the University of Ghana Stadium.

“We changed the referee for the MTN FA Cup final because the referee said he had a muscle pull. He realised that during the warm-up. That’s why we always have four referees so that others can step in when such situations happen,” Arthur clarified.

The switch was quietly executed minutes before the high-stakes clash, which ended in a 2-1 victory for Asante Kotoko, handing them their 10th FA Cup title and a return to continental football after years of drought.

Adaari’s officiating has not been without controversy. With the game tied at 1-1 late in the second half, he awarded the Porcupine Warriors a penalty that many fans and pundits have since questioned.

Kwame Opoku calmly slotted home from the spot to seal his brace and secure the trophy.

The decision sparked anger among supporters of Division One side Golden Kick, who felt hard done by.

Some fans hurled bottles onto the pitch, while Golden Kick players confronted the officials after the final whistle.

Treat patients with empathy and dignity – Health Minister to GHS

0

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has called on the Governing Boards of the Ghana Health Service and the Ho Teaching Hospital to ensure that patients are treated with empathy, dignity, and professionalism.

Speaking at the inauguration of both boards on Monday, June 16, the Minister emphasized the need for improved patient care across the country.

He noted that his visits to various health facilities, along with reports received, indicate that many patients are not being treated with the highest level of professionalism—an issue that exacerbates the nation’s existing healthcare challenges.

He stressed that addressing these shortcomings is essential to building a more responsive and humane healthcare system for all Ghanaians.

“Ghanaian patients deserve to be treated with empathy, dignity and respect, which is very important. Sometimes it is quite disheartening to hear that patients are shunning away from hospitals, not because of a lack of equipment, but because of how professionals treat them. Professionalism must be our hallmark with the greatest of respect. It shouldn’t be business as usual.”

The Health Minister further urged health facilities to prudently utilise internally generated funds to repair obsolete equipment rather than relying on government intervention to fix faulty equipment in healthcare facilities.

“…Why should equipment be faulty or obsolete, and it will still require the government to look for money to go and fix it. This should be a thing of the past. We must have clear rules of engagement. Open an account, put those monies in, and we only touch the money when we want to fix or replace the equipment.”

A search of the vehicle revealed 40 tightly wrapped parcels concealed in a fertilizer sack in the vehicle’s boot.

The exhibits have been handed over to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit at the Police Headquarters for further investigation. The suspect is currently in police custody, assisting investigations, and will be put before the court.

‘Supreme Court is not bound by its own decisions’ – Justice Senyo Dzamefe

Justice Senyo Dzamefe has ben nominated to the Supreme Court play videoJustice Senyo Dzamefe has ben nominated to the Supreme Court

Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has stated that the country’s apex court, the Supreme Court, is not bound by its own decisions.

According to him, the court is established to create and enforce policies that are backed by law.

However, he added that when the court deems it necessary to adjust constitutional interpretation to evolving circumstances, it can depart from its previous decisions based on constitutional evolution.

“Mr Chairman, the Supreme Court as the Apex Court, is a policy court which we cannot deny. That is why they are not bound by their own decisions. As at when they think they are fit to do so, they can depart from their decisions based on the evolving nature of the law and situations.

“So, the Supreme Court, saying that something has to be done, are at liberty to depart from their previous decisions. That’s why they are not bound, Mr Chairman,” he said this when he appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, June 16, 2025.

When asked by Ranking Member Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin to provide instances where he would favor constitutional evolution versus textual fidelity as a Supreme Court justice, Dzamefe stated that such considerations could be made if an incorrect law was applied, resulting in injustice, or if factual distinctions could be drawn, among other factors.

“If the Supreme Court gives a decision, we are all bound by it, but then, you can depart when a decision is given per incuriam, or a wrong law has been applie,d or the decision becomes unjust in the circumstances. And if you can differentiate the facts, you can depart from it,” he added.

The Bank of Ghana anticipates a decline in inflation rates in the near future, driven by the strict monetary policies currently in place.

First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Zakari Mumuni, stated that the country’s inflation rate is projected to decline further toward the year-end target of 12%, as a result of the Bank’s tight monetary policy stance.

Dr Mumuni made these remarks while speaking at the Ghana Diaspora Investment Forum in Accra.

He highlighted the improved macroeconomic environment as a key factor that will support the reduction in inflation.

“Macroeconomic fundamentals are projected to improve further to create a business-friendly environment for investors, while growth is projected to remain strong throughout the year,” he said.

The First Deputy BoG Governor also noted that remittance inflows have become vital to Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves.

He also expects that ongoing reforms to tighten foreign exchange rules will help reduce remittance costs.

Dr Zakari stated that the Bank of Ghana has enhanced security and transparency measures to encourage greater investment from diaspora communities.

He further mentioned that the Central Bank will continue to develop innovative financial solutions tailored to the needs of the diaspora, to facilitate their investments and settlement plans.

British heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua took a break from the gloves and spotlight to soak in the calm of Ghana’s coast, enjoying a luxurious boat cruise courtesy of Ghanaian business magnate Ibrahim Mahama.

The two-time unified world champion, who arrived in Ghana on Friday, June 13, 2025, as part of his visit for the Legacy Rise Sports Battle of the Beasts event, has been actively engaging with locals and appears to be thoroughly enjoying his stay.

Joshua, secured in a life jacket, was all smiles as he cruised the tranquil waters of Ada alongside Ibrahim Mahama and Sharaf Mahama, son of President John Dramani Mahama.

The trio set sail from Mahama’s private beachfront property in Ada, drawing admiration from both fans and social media users.

Sharaf led the way on a jet ski, confidently navigating the waters, while Joshua and Ibrahim Mahama followed closely behind in a speedboat, sharing laughter and soaking in the peaceful surroundings.

Footage from the outing, which quickly circulated on social media, captured the boxer’s relaxed demeanour, far removed from the intensity of the boxing ring.

Many fans expressed awe at the serene scenes, while others humorously commented on the high-profile hospitality offered by the Mahama family.

Earlier during his visit, Joshua was also seen riding a motorbike, smiling and waving as fans cheered him on through the streets.

Half of December shows were free – Ruddy Kwakye

0

Ghanaian media executive and culture curator Ruddy Kwakye has said in a recent interview on Joy FM that many Ghanaian events don’t make gains because too many free tickets are given out.

Ruddy told Kwame Dadzie on Showbiz A-Z that several Ghanaian event organisers usually give out tickets for free just to fill up venues.

“You charge a 100,000 cedis to do a show in Ghana but the reality is you can’t sell 100,000 dollars’ worth of tickets. Half of your December shows by your favourite artistes were all free.
They just gave tickets to people to fill it up. It’s an ego trip. Because there is a system — if you market in a certain way, you would get your money back. But there is no shortcut around it, thinking we sold the tickets, therefore we should make profit,” he said.

He made this statement while discussing why many event organisers usually complain about making losses from their events after claiming they sold out their venues.

For playwright Latif Abubakar, making profit from events goes beyond just ticket sales. He said on the show that there are other avenues for raising funds to complement ticket income.

“I always say tickets are insignificant to the cost of a production. Because the amount of money we charge for ticketing is very small. You can’t depend on tickets to produce your events.
There are other elements of raising funds for production. We talk about sponsorships, partners, investors, and then you create other portfolios,” he said.

Latif noted that he creates a portfolio for exhibitions, where companies exhibit their wares and pay him.

For most event organisers, taxes imposed by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) also put a lot of pressure on their operations.

Ghana shuts down Embassy in Tehran; plans to evacuate nationals from Iran

0

The government of Ghana has commenced the emergency evacuation of nationals from Iran following heightened tensions and the conflict between Israel and Iran.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the decision via social media on Monday [June 16].

He described it as a proactive measure to protect Ghanaian lives. The evacuation order, he noted, affects all Ghanaian nationals in Iran — including diplomats, students, professionals, and other residents.

“The Mahama Administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” Mr Ablakwa indicated.

As part of the evacuation effort, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been shut down with immediate effect to ensure the safety of diplomatic staff. The operation is being carried out via Iran’s land borders, according to the minister.

Meanwhile, the government says it is monitoring developments in Israel closely. Although no evacuation order has been issued for Ghanaians living in Israel at this stage, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has ordered embassy operations in Tel Aviv to scale down to the barest minimum.

“All Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department,” Mr Ablakwa added.

The Mahama administration has also reiterated Ghana’s longstanding diplomatic position, calling for restraint and urging both Israel and Iran to pursue peaceful dialogue.

“The Government of Ghana reiterates its demand on both parties to pursue diplomatic options and end hostilities,” the minister concluded.

Ghana is among the first African countries to initiate formal evacuation measures in response to the conflict, which has triggered international alarm over the possibility of a wider regional war.

Ahmed Abdula Crowned New Cruiserweight Champion

0

Ahmed Abdula

AHMED ABDULA is the new national cruiserweight champion after delivering a stunning performance to defeat Haruna Mohammed via unanimous decision at the Battle of the Beasts event on Friday, June 13, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

In front of a capacity crowd of over 5,000, Abdula produced a masterclass in power, speed, and precision, sealing scores of 97-92 across all judges’ cards.

The bout was part of a high-profile bill headlined by Amir Khan Promotions and Legacy Rise Sports, featuring Sharaf Mahama.

From the opening round, Abdula asserted himself as the aggressor, landing the cleaner shots and unsettling the defending champion. A ferocious right hook in the second round dislodged Mohammed’s mouth guard, foreshadowing the punishment to come.

As torrential rain soaked the arena and fans chanted “Hwie, Hwie, hwie gu yenso,” Abdula sent Mohammed to the canvas with a devastating hook. The challenger’s momentum only grew, dazzling the crowd—and boxing legend Azumah Nelson—with confident footwork and punishing combinations.

Despite flashes of resistance from Mohammed in rounds six and nine, Abdula remained dominant. He bloodied his opponent’s nose in the eighth and evaded multiple attacks with slick movement.

Frustration boiled over in Mohammed’s corner when his mouth guard repeatedly fell out in the final round, prompting visible anger from his coach, GBA Technical Director Ofori Asare.

When the final bell rang, the outcome was clear. Abdula had dismantled the champion in every department, earning a clean sweep on the scorecards: 97-92, 97-92, 97-92.

When asked about criticisms that some of these waste management investments—partly funded through mechanisms like the Energy Sector Levies Act (ESLA)—have not yielded the expected results, such as large-scale organic fertiliser production, Osei-Duah redirected the conversation toward oversight.

“If there are public funds pushed into this, again I will come back to supervision,” she stated. “If there are authorities manning every aspect of this country and if we have set up organizations… I’m a businessman, I may not even be an expert in the industry and I find business and I’m doing, somebody should put me in line and make sure that what is expected of me, the value for money, is given.”

Her remarks suggest that while Zoomlion has made major investments in infrastructure, their full potential depends on effective supervision and partnership with relevant state agencies.

Zoomlion’s willingness to participate in upcoming bids signals its determination to remain a key player in Ghana’s waste management sector, albeit under a new and more competitive procurement regime.

Justice Dzamefe supports proposal to increase justices on Supreme Court bench

Justice Senyo Dzamefe, a Court of Appeal judge nominated for appointment to the Supreme Court bench, has supported a proposal to increase the number of justices on the Supreme Court, arguing that the move would help clear a growing backlog of cases.

He made the remark during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday [June 16, 2025].

Justice Dzamefe was the first of seven nominees appearing before the vetting committee this week.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo currently on suspension pending an investigation into three petitions asking for her removal from office, in February 2024 had proposed in a letter to the President that the number of justices on the bench should be increased to 20 because of the workload, in effect, she was asking for the appointment of additional justices.

According to data cited by Justice Torkornoo, 12 judges handled 344 cases in the 2022/2023 legal year, leaving 1,648 cases pending.

“Our Supreme Court is overburdened with more than 400 cases each year, unlike the United States, where state courts help reduce the load,” Justice Dzamefe told parliament’s appointment committee when he appeared for vetting on Monday morning.

He said increasing the number of judges would speed up decisions on land, chieftaincy, and constitutional matters.

Responding to a question from Mr Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Justice Dzamefe also supported a proposal to extend Supreme Court sittings to Tamale in the northern part of Ghana to help lessen the burden on litigants in traveling to Accra.

He said the move would reduce travel costs for litigants in northern Ghana and make justice more accessible in towns such as Bawku and Bolgatanga.

On the issue of transparency, Justice Dzamefe confirmed that he had filed his asset declaration in response to a question from Mr Jerry Ahmed Shaib.

“Judges must comply with the law as public officers,” he said.

John Mahama is the most prepared president in Ghana’s history – Gabby Otchere-Darko

New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has asserted that President John Dramani Mahama is the most prepared president in Ghana’s history.

Speaking in an interview on Asaase Radio on Monday, June 16, 2025, Gabby explained that Mahama’s extensive political journey, from assemblyman to president and back to power after a term in opposition, makes him uniquely experienced and equipped for leadership.

“I think the current president is probably the most prepared president we’ve had. From assemblyman all the way to where he is now, vice president, president, you’ve been in opposition, seen who your real friends are, learned from your mistakes, identified missed opportunities, and now you’ve been given another chance,” he said.

Otchere-Darko, however, noted that President Mahama faces a daunting task in fulfilling his campaign promises, particularly those made to the youth.

“The youth are unforgiving. They want jobs. They voted for you because they expect their aspirations to be met by your 24-hour economy policy and other promises. Satisfying them in this world of social media, new media, where every government action is overexposed and exaggerated, is a huge challenge,” he said.

He added, “But you must remember that your role is not to fulfill people’s aspirations directly, but to create the enabling environment for them to pursue those aspirations. If the government does that, creating space and opportunity, the youth must also put in the hard work to realise their goals.”

Gabby also encouraged Ghanaian youth to explore opportunities beyond the country, especially in other African nations.

UDS Calls On GFA After Historic Africa University Games Victory

UDS officials during their visit

OFFICIALS OF the University for Development Studies (UDS) have paid a courtesy call on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to celebrate their recent victory at the Africa University Games and seek support for the upcoming World University Games in China.

UDS made history by defeating Lagos State University 3–0 in the final, earning them the continental title and the honour of representing Africa on the global stage in September.

Led by Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Elliot Haruna Alhassan, the high-level UDS delegation included top officials from finance, sports, and public affairs. The team met with GFA Vice President Mark Addo, who stood in for President Kurt Okraku.

Prof. Alhassan highlighted UDS’s pride in flying Ghana’s flag and appealed for support ahead of their global challenge. “This is a proud moment for Ghana. We want to make the nation proud in China, and we need your help to do that,” he said.

Mark Addo congratulated UDS for their achievement and praised the discipline and talent of the team. He reaffirmed the GFA’s commitment to supporting football development within academic institutions.

“The GFA stands with you and will support your preparations for the World University Games,” he assured.

The visit underscored growing collaboration between academia and football leadership as Ghana positions itself for global success in university sports.

Judges must declare assets like all govt appointees – Justice Dzamefe

0

Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has called for equal accountability across all arms of government, insisting that judges, like other public officials, must declare their assets in accordance with the Constitution.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, June 16, Justice Dzamefe stressed that members of the judiciary should not be exempt from the constitutional requirement of asset declaration.

“If the law says all government appointees should declare their assets, and judges are government appointees, why not? They have to declare their assets,” he stated.

When asked whether he had complied with this requirement, Justice Dzamefe responded, “Yes, Mr. Chairman.”

His comments underscore the importance of transparency and accountability within the judiciary, amid growing public concerns about ethical standards and potential conflicts of interest involving holders of public office.

Justice Dzamefe’s stance aligns with calls from civil society organisations and legal reform advocates who have long demanded more openness in the judiciary as part of broader governance reforms.

His vetting forms part of a series of hearings for nominees to the Supreme Court, following recent appointments by President John Dramani Mahama.

Payment of nursing trainees’ allowances to be automatic – Mahama

By Iddi Yire

Accra, June 16, GNA-President John Dramani Mahama has assured nursing trainees that the Government has put mechanisms in place to ensure that the payment of their monthly allowances will be done automatically.

He assured them that their allowances were being worked on by the Government and that by next month (July), they would start receiving their payments.

“We have designed it such that your payment will come automatically every month. Every month you will receive your money.” President Mahama stated in his address at a durbar of the chiefs and people of the North East Region at Nalerigu during his Thank You Tour of the Region.

“The budget was made from January and so when we start paying you next month, the arrears from January to June will be paid to you.”

The President is embarking on his on nationwide Thank You Tour to express gratitude to Ghanaians for their support for him and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the Decem 7, 2024, general election.

President Mahama announced that the Nalerigu College of Nursing and Midwifery was one of the colleges that had been selected for upgrading into a degree awarding institution.

He said education remained the nation’s greatest equalizer, adding that no region could prosper if its children were left behind.

He said the Gambaga College of Education remained a critical priority, and that following his directive, the GEDFUND Administrator had assessed the stalled projects on that campus, and he would confirm that funding was ready to complete the permanent site.

“We expect construction to resume in the third quarter of this year. The contractor will be on site at the Gambaga College of Education new site,” the President said.

Ghana loses billions to gold smuggling with most heading to Dubai – Report

0

Latest report by Swissaid has revealed that Ghana is losing billions of dollars in revenue annually due to rampant smuggling from its booming artisanal gold mining sector, with much of the illicit bullion ending up in the United Arab Emirates.

The report, released on June 11, 2025, uncovered a massive 229-metric ton trade gap valued at $11.4 billion between Ghana’s declared gold exports and the corresponding imports recorded by trading partners over a five-year period.

A significant portion of the undeclared gold was traced to Dubai, where it is believed to be entering informally via hand luggage and undeclared air cargo.

The head of the Sahel programme at Germany’s Konrad Adenauer Foundation who studies artisanal mining and regional insurgencies said, “This is just the tip of the iceberg. Hand-carried gold does not have to be declared in Dubai. Informal gold is mostly brought in on flights,” he stated.

The report detailed how smuggled gold often transits through Togo, Burkina Faso, and Mali, taking advantage of porous borders before reaching the UAE.

A senior official from Ghana’s Minerals Commission acknowledged the issue, describing the findings as a “notorious fact.”

Despite repeated concerns over revenue loss, Ghana’s finance ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

The report also highlighted the unintended consequences of a 3 percent withholding tax introduced by Ghana in 2019 to formalize and regulate artisanal gold exports.

Rather than improving transparency, the measure caused a collapse in declared exports and a sharp rise in smuggling.

In 2022, the government reduced the tax to 1.5 percent, prompting a modest recovery.

However in March 2024, the tax was entirely scrapped, a move the finance minister credited for a surge in official artisanal gold exports this year.

According to the report, an estimated 34 metric tons of Ghana’s 2023 gold output went undeclared roughly equivalent to the total amount of officially recorded artisanal production.

You can’t depend on ticket sales to produce your events – Latif Abubakar

Latif Abubakar is a popular Ghanaian playwright Latif Abubakar is a popular Ghanaian playwright

Renowned Ghanaian playwright Latif Abubakar has stated that ticket sales alone are not enough to sustain events.

He urged organisers to explore multiple revenue streams within their shows to stay afloat.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z on June 14, 2025, Abubakar explained that the price of tickets in Ghana is often too low to cover the high cost of event production.

“I always say tickets are insignificant to the cost of a production. The amount we charge for tickets is very small. You can’t depend on ticket sales to produce your events,” he said.

He advised organisers to seek alternative funding sources such as sponsorships, partnerships, and investor support, stressing the importance of building a diversified income strategy.

Latif also revealed that one of his strategies to generating revenue is by creating exhibition opportunities during his events, where companies can showcase their products or services for a fee, helping to offset costs.

“I create a portfolio of exhibitions where companies exhibit their wares and pay me,” he noted.

ECG uncovers illegal connection at Rehoboth Estate in Kweiman ECG uncovers illegal connection at Rehoboth Estate in Kweiman

The revenue team of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG)-Accra East Division, has uncovered widespread illegal electricity connections at Rehoboth Estate in Kweiman.

During an inspection of the estate, the team discovered that over 100 newly built homes had been connected to the electricity grid illegally.

Additionally, a block factory within the estate was found to be using an illegal connection to power its operations.

In a video shared by JoyNews on X (formerly Twitter), members of the ECG team were heard expressing their frustration, “They don’t have meters. These people are very wicked. There are cables on the floor. Almost everybody has an air conditioner in this estate.”

JoyNews further reported that, following the discovery of widespread power theft, the illegally connected block factory, used for supplying construction materials, was disconnected from the power supply.

In recent times, the ECG has raised concerns over the significant revenue losses incurred due to illegal electricity connections. Some of the most common forms of power theft identified include direct service connections, meter bypassing, meter tampering, and unauthorised service connections.

The company says it is intensifying efforts to crack down on such illegalities and ensure that offenders are brought to book.

Asante Kotoko’s dramatic triumph over Golden Kick SC in the 2025 MTN FA Cup Final has not only ended their eight-year title drought but also brought a financial windfall of GH¢180,000.

The Porcupine Warriors secured their 10th FA Cup title on Sunday, June 15, 2025, with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Division One underdogs Golden Kick at the University of Ghana Stadium.

The victory brings them just two titles shy of rivals Hearts of Oak’s record haul of 12.

Kwame Opoku was the hero of the day, scoring both goals for Kotoko. He opened the scoring with a powerful header before Bless Efe equalised for Golden Kick with a stunning free-kick.

But the game turned on a controversial late penalty, awarded by referee Latif Adaari, which Opoku calmly converted to seal the win and his brace.

Despite the controversy, Kotoko celebrated a long-awaited return to FA Cup glory, having last lifted the trophy in 2017.

Speaking on Sporty FM, Chairman of the FA Cup Committee Wilson Arthur revealed the financial rewards for the champions.

“The prize money for the MTN FA Cup is GH¢80,000, plus GH¢100,000 to prepare for the CAF Confederation Cup,” he disclosed.

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has criticised the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, over briefings on Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL).

Reacting to the briefing which took place on June 13, 2025, he said the press conferences which indict government appointees in alleged corruption cases during their tenure in office is unfair.

“This is unfair to the former appointees cited for various offenses. Why is he doing this? He is an experienced lawyer. He is my senior by many years and a lecturer. So, I expect him to know better,” he indicated.

He argued that the actions of the Attorney General’s Department give room for public trials even before the person has the chance to defend themselves before a court of competent jurisdiction.

“He knows that a person is innocent until proven guilty by the precepts of the law. Ideally, he must refer these cases directly to the court instead of the ongoing media trial,” he said during an interview on Okay FM on June 16, 2025.

He lamented that the modus operandi taken by the Attorney General’s Department and called for a rethink of the handling of public prosecution of former appointees.

Meanwhile, former Director-General of National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahene, is standing trial with his wife and other accomplices in connection with an alleged financial scandal involving a $7 million cyber defense system contract.

Also, Former Deputy Executive Director Gifty Oware-Mensah has been named in the National Service Authority’s (NSA) ghost names payroll scandal.

Minority urges Supreme Court nominees to be guardians of fundamental laws, not instrument of executive convenience

Accra, June 16, GNA-The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus has urged Justices nominated to the Supreme Court to be guardians of the fundamental law and not become instruments of Executive convenience.

Delivering an address before the vetting of Justice Senyo Dzamefe, a nominee to the Supreme Court by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, stated that the authority of the Supreme Court was derived from moral standing, and not political alignment.

Noting that true judiciary independence required constitutional courage, deciding cases on law and precedent and not political preferences, he added.

Mr Afenyo-Markin, Ranking Member on the Appointments Committee, underscored the need for Supreme Court Judges to protect minority rights against majoritarian excesses.

Mr Afenyo-Markin, also the NPP legislator for Effutu constituency, criticised the ruling government for double standards by opposing the nomination of two Justices to the Supreme Court by the previous NPP government.

“This government’s double standards are staggering. The NDC vehemently opposed the nominations of Justice Sophia Banasco and Professor Richard Oppong’s nomination under President Akufo-Addo, crying that the court is over bloated, now the President presents seven nominees simultaneously,” he said.

President John Mahama nominated seven justices who are currently serving on the Court of Appeals bench to the Supreme Court earlier this year.

The nominees are Justice Senyo Dzamefe, Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, Justice Janapare Adzua Bartels-Kodwo, Justice Hafisata Amaleboba, and Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo.

The President’s nomination is based on Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires the President to appoint Justices of the Supreme Court in consultation with the Council of State and with the approval of Parliament.
