Kwasi Asante was appointed as Director of Passports in December 2024 Kwasi Asante was appointed as Director of Passports in December 2024

The High Court in Accra, which issued an arrest warrant for the Director of Passports, Kwasi Asante, over the issuance of multiple passports to a suspect who was being prosecuted, has withdrawn the warrant.

This is according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, May 22, 2025.

The ministry stated that Kwasi Asante has been cleared of any wrongdoing in relation to the matter.

It was earlier reported by GhanaWeb and other media platforms that the individual who is accused of acquiring multiple passports, one Dominic Williams, acquired his last passport way before Asante was appointed as the Director of Passports.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform the general public that the High Court has formally withdrawn the arrest warrant previously issued against the Director of Passports in relation to the alleged issuance of multiple passports to an individual identified as Mr Dominic Williams.

“The Ministry wishes to confirm that the matter has been fully resolved and that the Director of Passports has been cleared of any wrongdoing. It is important to emphasised that the incident in question predates the Director’s assumption of office on 19th August 2024,” parts of the statement read.

“Records available to the Ministry show that Mr Dominic Williams acquired his first Ghanaian passport over twelve (12) years ago, with his most recent passport issued on 16th January 2024 – a full eight (8) months before the current Director assumed leadership of the Passport Office,” it added.

The ministry has expressed appreciation to the court for the professional manner it handled the issue.

Background:

The High Court in Accra issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the Director of Passports on Friday, May 16, 2025, in relation to a case it was hearing.

According to court documents sighted by GhanaWeb, although the accused person had been discharged following the withdrawal of the case by the Attorney-General, the presiding judge still requested that the Director of Passports appear before the court to explain how a single individual was issued more than eight passports.

The documents indicated that the bench warrant was issued during court proceedings on Friday, May 16, 2025, after the director failed to honour the court’s directive.

The documents further indicated that although Asante had been duly served, he had failed to appear before the court.

Kwasi Asante was appointed Director of Passports by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in December 2024.

Defence Minister Clash With NPP’s Vincent Ekow Over Cost of Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s Chartered Flight

0

According to by GhanaWeb, the Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has responded to criticisms raised by Old Tafo lawmaker, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, regarding the Vice President’s recent return from the United Kingdom on a chartered flight.

On May 22, 2025, Assafuah took to Facebook to share details of Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s journey, including the aircraft’s origin, schedule, and duration.

He claimed that the flight, operated by VistaJet 836, took off from Farnborough in the UK and landed in Accra later that day.

His post questioned the financial implications of using a private aircraft for the Vice President’s travel and demanded greater transparency from the government.

In reaction to the post, Dr. Boamah criticized the former administration led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), of which Assafuah is a member, for the poor condition of the country’s official presidential aircraft.

According to the minister, the aircraft — the Falcon — was so poorly maintained under the previous government that its fuel tank suffered corrosion and other technical faults.

“Let the NPP that suffered the most humiliating defeat in recent memory in both the Presidential and Parliamentary elections know this: Akufo-Addo’s administration rundown the Presidential jet. Among others, its fuel tank is even corroded,” he said.

Dr. Boamah explained that the aircraft has since been taken abroad for comprehensive maintenance and is currently out of service.

He indicated that the repair work is extensive and may take up to three months before the plane is ready for any official assignments.

The Vice President returned to Ghana after a period of medical leave in the UK.

Her arrival was marked by a warm reception at the airport, led by President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama.

Other dignitaries present included Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, the Vice President’s Chief of Staff Alex Segbefia, religious leaders, and members of her family.

Gyakie returns with ‘Sankofa’ ahead of debut album

0

Ghanaian singer and songwriter Gyakie has returned with a stirring new single, “Sankofa,” a reflective and emotionally charged track that sets the tone for her highly anticipated debut album, After Midnight.

Co-written with longtime collaborator Eyram Gbewonyo (Afrolektra), the single delves into themes of reconnection, closure, and emotional honesty, signaling a new chapter in Gyakie’s artistic evolution.

Rooted in the profound Ghanaian adinkra symbol “Sankofa” — which translates to “go back and retrieve what has been lost” — the track explores the power of introspection. With its stripped-down production and raw, expressive delivery, Gyakie opens a deeply personal window into her soul, inviting listeners to pause, reflect, and reconnect with their own emotional truths.

“Sankofa” marks the beginning of what Gyakie describes as her most vulnerable and inward-looking work yet. It also serves as a prelude to After Midnight, a debut album shaped by solitude, reflection, and the quiet magic of nighttime creativity.

“Almost all the songs on the album were recorded after midnight,” Gyakie reveals. “It’s within those hours that I find my best inspiration to write. The peace and quiet, the sounds from the birds, the serenity — everything about that time fuels my creativity.”

Beyond the music, After Midnight is also a reflection of Gyakie’s emotional journey. She candidly shares moments of grief, solitude, and healing, noting: “I’ve done a lot of crying after midnight too. When I’m in my down moments, I schedule my tears for when I get home from work, then I let it all out.”

The album draws on childhood memories as well, particularly a nightly family ritual of her mother praying for her and her siblings after midnight — a tradition that continues today. “That time of the night holds so much meaning for me,” she adds.

With this album, Gyakie not only opens up emotionally but also pushes musical boundaries. Known for her seamless blend of Afro-fusion, R&B, hip-hop, and highlife, she continues to redefine the soundscape of contemporary African music. Her previous EPs — SEED (2021), which featured the breakout hit Forever, and MY DIARY (2022), which included a collaboration with Nigerian superstar Davido — marked her as a rising force in global music.

Her momentum hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2025, Gyakie was a featured speaker at the prestigious Forbes Summit, where she offered insights into her genre-blending artistry and global ambitions.

As After Midnight approaches, Gyakie invites fans into a world where silence speaks, vulnerability thrives, and music becomes a mirror to the soul. For those ready to listen, she suggests pressing play at 12:01 AM — the hour when honesty flows most freely.

“Am I not a Ghanaian?” – Wontumi lashes out after National Security raid

0

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has accused the John Mahama-led administration of political witch-hunting and economic sabotage following a search conducted at his residence by a combined team of police and National Security operatives.

The operatives, armed with a search warrant sighted by JoyNews, stormed his premises to conduct what they described as a lawful operation.

But speaking to journalists after the incident, Chairman Wontumi decried what he believes is a targeted attack rooted in politics. “Am I not a Ghanaian anymore? Now that you’ve won the election and become President, does that mean I’m no longer a Ghanaian?” he questioned, directing his frustration at President Mahama.

He called on NPP supporters and concerned Ghanaians to speak out against what he described as abuse of power. “Ghanaians, rise! Arise, Ghanaians! All NPP supporters should rise. It is because of you that Mahama is treating me this way.”

Chairman Wontumi, known for his fiery political rhetoric, defended his role in national politics and questioned the justification for the government’s actions.

“Was I ever a Vice President? Have I ever chaired a board? Have I ever been a CEO? Was I ever a minister?” he asked. “I am only the chairman of a political party, and it is my duty to campaign for my party.”

He went on to accuse the Mahama administration of deliberately collapsing his businesses and freezing his bank accounts.

“You collapsed my business back in 2013. Since you assumed office, you’ve halted all my operations. Even the bank account I rely on has been frozen,” he alleged.

Chairman Wontumi’s comments have sparked fresh political debate about the use of state power and the treatment of opposition figures under the current administration.

NPP condemns ‘state-sponsored persecution’ of members, calls for immediate action

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong condemnation of what it describes as politically motivated intimidation and harassment of its members by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, through the alleged misuse of state security institutions.

In a press release issued on Friday, May 23, the NPP called for an immediate end to these actions, labeling them a direct attack on Ghana’s democracy and the rule of law.

Arrest of Adenta Kumi Sparks Outrage

On the morning of Friday, May 23, 2025, heavily armed operatives, believed to be from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), reportedly stormed the residence of Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as “Adenta Kumi.”

According to the NPP, six masked officers wielding AK-47 rifles forcibly arrested him in a manner they described as “Rambo-style intimidation.”

Kumi, a known party activist, had recently petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to dissolve the committee investigating petitions related to the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. His petition cited alleged misconduct within the investigative body.

The NPP claims his sudden arrest is an attempt to silence him and obstruct justice.

“The response of the state should have been to address the concerns raised in the petition through due process, not through intimidation and force,” the party stated. “This is a clear affront to democratic accountability.”

Raid on Chairman Wontumi’s Residence

The NPP also raised concerns over the alleged harassment of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.

Armed men reportedly stormed his residence despite prior communication between him and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The chairman had previously informed authorities of his inability to appear for questioning due to medical reasons but assured them of his availability on May 26, 2025. The party labeled the raid as “nothing short of political harassment.”

Calls for Public Action

The NPP has called on Ghanaians, civil society organizations, and democratic institutions to condemn what it perceives as a deliberate attempt to weaken opposition voices and undermine the nation’s democratic values.

“These actions violate the fundamental rights of citizens and threaten transparency, justice, and equal protection under the law. We urge all defenders of democracy to speak out against this political persecution,” the statement concluded.

“What State Money Came to Me to Justify This Harassment?” — Wontumi on Frozen Accounts

0

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has revealed the severe difficulties he is facing after his bank accounts were frozen as reported by ModernGhana.

The Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) took this action in April following allegations that his company, Akonta Mining, was involved in illegal mining in the Tano Nimiri Forest.

Wontumi disclosed that the freeze on his accounts has left him struggling to meet basic needs, including feeding himself and paying his children’s school fees.

Speaking on his radio station, he questioned the basis of the government’s actions, saying, “What state money came to me that justifies this harassment?”

He claims that the freeze and ongoing pressure are politically motivated, targeting him unfairly despite not holding any government office in the previous NPP administration.

“I have never been a Vice President, a Minister, a CEO, or a board member of any state institution. I was only a Chairman with the mandate to campaign for my party,” he explained.

Chairman Wontumi also highlighted that his business was affected back in 2013 but maintained his loyalty when the NPP came to power.

He now feels victimized by the current government, led by President John Dramani Mahama, stating that even with a change in administration in 2025, the targeting of his companies continues.

Recently, a team of police and security personnel surrounded his residence, demanding access, which he viewed as further intimidation.

He called on Ghanaians and NPP supporters to stand strong, asserting that the government’s actions are politically driven and aimed at punishing party members.

The programme, organised by VORAB Project International, an NGO with support from Steminist Foundation Ghana, was on the theme: ‘Be inspired by nature to nourish us all.’

Mr Amaglo, addressing a durbar here to mark the day, said the country needed to come out with a policy that would guide people ready to go into bee keeping.

He stated that bee keeping started in the country in the 1960s, it remained undeveloped and not appealing to the youth.

“A lot of people believed bee as a stinging insect that inflicts pain,” Mr Amaglo stated.

However, he said if not harassed, bees were friendly.

Mr Amaglo pointed out that big industries had been created around bee keeping in some countries through innovation and the art of science.

The Customer Service Officer of the Forestry Commission pledged that the entities promoting bee keeping in Volta and Oti Region would continue to work to develop and promote the industry.

The Executive Director of VORAB Project International, Mr Devine Okoe Odonkor, noted that his outfit decided to join the World Community to celebrate the World Bee Day in view of the positive role bees played in the ecosystem such as facilitating pollination.

He underlined that the programme was to highlight the importance of protecting bees in the lives of humans.

“We cannot continue to harvest honey the traditional way. We need to do things differently and change our mindset as well as commit relevant resources to make bee farming sustainable,” he indicated.

The world is changing and the youth are getting interested in bee keeping since honey is becoming expensive.

The Officer of Steminist Foundation, Ms Nerissa Anku, added that the “Bee industry along its value chain provides livelihoods, employment, creates wealth and alleviates poverty.”

Miss Portia Dogbe, an officer from Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), said that GSA would ensure quality and standards were adhered to in bee keeping in order to help the industry to strive.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony here on Wednesday, the Interior Minister said in 2016, government acted through the Ghana Immigration Service to enter into an agreement with the State Housing Company for the construction of the building.

He stated that the brain behind it construction was to provide decent accommodation for junior rank officers stationed at the Yakubu Tali International Airport.

The Minister outlined that the new buildings were meant to help solve the accommodation challenges facing the security services in the country, especially the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).

“The government is doing its best to ensure that the accommodation challenges facing the security agencies in the country is solved once and for all,” the Minister mentioned.

“The completion of this project stands as a beacon and testament to Government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of security personnel and their families,” he added.

Alhaji Mubarak further indicated that it was their firm belief of the government that when officers were well housed, they would better positioned to discharge their duties efficiently and effectively.

That, according to him, was always important for security personnel in this country to be well accommodated to take care of properties and lives of this country.

The Northern Regional Minister, Mr Ali Adolf John Mburidiba, emphasised that the government would continue to support the security services with the facilities they need to motivate them to work hard.

He assured the Minister that he would assist the Service to ensure that they took good care of the new facility.

‘NPP is at crossroads; but we will bounce back’- Catherine Afeku

0

Former Member of Parliament for Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira, Catherine Afeku Former Member of Parliament for Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira, Catherine Afeku

Former Member of Parliament for Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira, Catherine Afeku, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to unite and stop the internal blame games following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews and monitored by GhanaWeb on Friday, May 23, 2025, she expressed worry over the growing divisions within the party.

“Some people withdrew from the ‘Thank you Tour’ and from the perspective of many Ghanaians, NPP looks untidy right now, not united. I would (sic) dwell on the clarion call to get people to unite”, she stated.

The former lawmaker also likened the party’s internal wranglings to grief following its defeat in the 2024 elections and urged members to be patient and allow time for healing.

“It’s like grief, you’ve lost something, and you have to allow people to grieve and then after healing you quickly come back together.

“And that is the stage we are, we need to come back together, close ranks and diminish the blame game,” she noted.

The former lawmaker recalled moments in the NPP’s history when the party faced adversity and prolonged years in opposition.

“NPP is not like in tatters, it’s a party at a crossroads, but we will bounce back. You can mark that; we will bounce back.

“We’ve been through this before, we were in the wilderness for 30 something years,” she added.

She continued, “We have to have that kind of faith and fervour that NDC is in power. They have good will now but remember, it’s a cycle. No party stays in power forever. So, we have to keep this in mind. We have to be very calm, very united, get back to the drawing board, and do the competition because competition is part and parcel of democracy”.

‘Revisionist history’ – Isaac Adongo chides NPP for taking credit amid economic recovery

0

Isaac Adongo, Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central Isaac Adongo, Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central

Chairman of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Isaac Adongo, has criticised the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for attempting to attribute Ghana’s current economic stability to policies enacted during their time in office.

Adongo, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, rejected the NPP’s narrative and instead credited the recent macroeconomic improvements to what he described as President John Dramani Mahama’s “reset agenda” and the “prudent fiscal management” introduced since taking office in January 2025.

He took particular aim at former finance minister Dr Mohammed Amin Adam and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who have suggested that the cedi’s stabilisation is the result of gold reserves accumulated under their administration.

“If reserves alone could stabilise the cedi, why was it hovering around GH¢17 to the dollar in 2024 under their watch, when they had those same reserves?” Adongo questioned, casting doubt on the credibility of the NPP’s claims.

He described the NPP’s shift from blaming external factors for economic difficulties to now claiming credit for the turnaround as “not only dishonest but ignores the economic mismanagement that led us here.”

According to Adongo, the foundation for Ghana’s current macroeconomic stability has been laid by the Mahama administration through a series of deliberate and strategic policy choices.

“These include strong fiscal consolidation, a tightened monetary policy, and key structural reforms,” he stated.

The Finance Committee Chairman pointed to concrete gains such as reduced government borrowing, easing interest rates, and a marked improvement in investor confidence, all of which, he argued, reflect the Mahama administration’s “fiscal credibility.”

“We have moved from opaque, shady borrowing tactics to a regime of transparency and discipline,” Adongo declared.

This transformation, he noted, has “freed up credit for the private sector and reduced the crowding-out effect.”

Adongo also highlighted the recent introduction of a Code of Conduct for government appointees as a major step toward restoring public and investor confidence.

He further emphasised significant improvements in the export sector, especially in gold and cocoa.

He credited these gains to the implementation of the “GoldBod program,” a government initiative aimed at curbing gold smuggling and boosting formal sector production.

“Gold exports are surging not because of old reserves, but because of decisive interventions that have made formal trading more attractive and trustworthy,” he affirmed.

On the monetary front, Adongo praised the Bank of Ghana for enhancing transparency in its foreign exchange operations and policy decisions. These efforts, he said, along with international recognition, have improved Ghana’s standing in global markets.

“S&P’s upgrade of Ghana from ‘SD’ to ‘CCC+’ is no accident. It’s a clear recognition of the Mahama government’s sound economic stewardship,” he stated.

He added that the positive trajectory of the yield curve and easing inflation are not just technical achievements but are beginning to impact everyday life; “These are not just abstract metrics, they are beginning to reflect in real terms in the lives of ordinary Ghanaians, just as President Mahama promised.”

Adongo accused the NPP of consistently avoiding responsibility during economic downturns, only to reappear and claim credit in periods of recovery.

“President Mahama is delivering on his pledge to the Ghanaian people,” Adongo said, “and no amount of revisionist narrative from the NPP will erase their record of haircuts, obnoxious taxes, and economic hardship.”

Tulenkey explains why he taped his mouth at 26th TGMAs

For those wondering why Tulenkey covered his mouth with masking tape during the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs), the Ghanaian rapper has revealed the inspiration behind the symbolic gesture.

At the event, held on May 10, 2025, Tulenkey appeared in an all-black suit with his lips sealed shut using black tape. He did not speak publicly at the ceremony and only used gestures to communicate after receiving his award for Best Hiplife Song.

However, in an interview with 3FM, the rapper explained the deeper meaning behind his silent statement.

“It’s a message. It speaks of what men go through—the inner battles we fight. Because being a man, when you are vulnerable, when you talk about your emotions, you are seen as weak. So they would rather die inside than let it out. The tape symbolised suffering in silence,” he said.

NPP needs unity and peace to win 2028 elections – Amenfi Central NPP Chairman

0

By Isaac Kwaku Gyedu

Manso (W/R), May 23, GNA – Mr Ebenezer Bimpeh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman for Amenfi Central Constituency, in the Western Region, has stated that NPP needs unity, peace, and respect for leadership to help take power from the National Democratic Congress in 2028.

He said in recent times, the party had lost strength in terms of unity and peace which could be detrimental to the party’s chances of coming back to power.

Mr Bimpeh said this when he addressed the youth caucus of the NPP in the constituency.

He acknowledged that the internal divisions within the party at the headquarters, region, constituencies, and even the polling stations contributed to the electoral defeat in the last elections.

“I am of the firm believe that with unity, peace, and respect, NPP will win the 2028 elections because fairness and justice are the only ways of fostering peace and unity within the party,” he said.

“And without these principles and ideas, it would be difficult for the party to regain power,” he added.

NPP slams NIB over arrest of Adenta Kumi

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised serious concerns over the arrest and detention of party activist and former parliamentary candidate, Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi.

According to NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has violated Kumi’s fundamental human rights.

Kumi was arrested at dawn on Friday, May 23, 2025, and is currently being held at the NIB office in Kawokudi, Accra. The exact reasons for his arrest remain unclear, but the NPP believes it may be connected to a petition he submitted earlier this week to President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The petition calls for the dissolution of the committee investigating the removal of the Chief Justice, citing alleged misconduct among committee members.

Kodua, speaking on Citi Prime News on Friday, May 23, expressed outrage over the handling of Kumi’s arrest.

“Well, certainly we think it is linked to the petition until the NIB comes out with a different reason because that is what we all know—that he has petitioned the President this week and is yet to receive an acknowledgment of it,” he stated.

Regardless of the motive behind the arrest, Kodua emphasised that Kumi’s rights had been violated.

“Whatever reason they may have, whether it is linked to the petition or any other matter, he still has a fundamental human right.

“His human rights have been abused because that is not a way to arrest and detain a person. At least the due process must be followed.”

Calling for swift intervention, Kodua urged civil society organizations (CSOs), the media, and the diplomatic community to condemn what he described as an “unlawful barbaric act” by a state institution.

He insisted that due process must be respected in all legal proceedings.

Dr. Omar Farouk Ibrahim –

Dr. Omar Farouk Ibrahim

SECRETARY-GENERAL of the African Petroleum Producers Organisation (APPO), Dr. Omar Farouk Ibrahim, has emphasised the need for African leaders to take ownership of energy access in their countries.

Speaking at the African Sustainable Energy Dialogue webinar, themed, “Bridging Africa’s Energy Access Gap- Challenges, Innovations and the Path Forward,” Dr. Ibrahim stressed that access to energy is a matter of leadership and that governments must spearhead efforts to achieve higher access rates.

“Access to energy, specifically electricity and commercial energy, is fundamentally a matter of leadership. Leaders who fail to prioritise and drive efforts to achieve higher access rates are being irresponsible. Electrifying a country requires government leadership and initiative, not individual efforts,” he said.

Dr. Ibrahim mentioned the challenge of Africa’s reliance on foreign currencies to facilitate development, while citing the establishment of the Africa Energy Bank by the African Export-Import Bank as a step towards producing energy for African people, rather than for external markets.

The APPO Secretary-General highlighted Ghana’s experience in developing its electricity infrastructure as an example of effective leadership. “Ghana’s first commercial electricity-producing plant was developed in 1966, and it took 23 years for the country to provide access to electricity to 19% of the population.

However, through concerted government efforts, including borrowing and mobilising funds, Ghana was able to accelerate electrification, reaching 87.5% access today,” he said.

Dr. Ibrahim also emphasised the importance of community participation in electrification efforts. He cited the Self-Help Electrification Programme, where communities contributed to the installation of infrastructure, as a key factor in Ghana’s success.

Senior Project Manager at the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), Monique Motty, has emphasized the need to examine the underlying issues hindering energy access in Africa. Monique Motty noted that the lack of leadership and systemic barriers are major obstacles to achieving energy access.

Monique Motty questioned whether Africa’s political systems are conducive to development, suggesting that the continent’s development has been shaped by external rules rather than African interests.

While acknowledging the need for increased financing, infrastructure development, and strong leadership, Madam Motty emphasised that these solutions are well-known in theory. Instead, she called for a deeper examination of the system in which Africa operates, suggesting that the energy barrier is a symptom of a larger problem.

Former Special Adviser to the President on Energy in Nigeria, Prof. Abubakar Sani Sambo mentioned that one of the major barriers to energy access is the limited financial capacity of both governments and consumers, stating that many African countries operate with tight budgets, prioritising sectors like healthcare, education, agriculture, and security, leaving minimal funds for capital-intensive energy infrastructure projects.

“As a result, public investment in energy is often insufficient to meet national electrification targets. Private sector participation, which could bridge this gap, is hindered by perceived and real risks, including macroeconomic instability, currency volatility, and inflation, which erode investor returns. Addressing energy access in Africa requires a comprehensive approach that tackles these complex issues,” he said.

Poor drainage system blamed for Accra floods – NADMO

0

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has attributed the severe flooding in parts of the Greater Accra Region to poor drainage infrastructure and rapid urban development, particularly along the Akuapem Range.

According to NADMO’s Director of Inspectorate, Richard Amo Yartey, the deluge was not caused by unusually heavy rainfall but by an overwhelmed and poorly maintained drainage system.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Friday, Mr. Yartey explained that although the Ghana Meteorological Agency recorded just 25 millimetres of rainfall, earlier showers and runoff from the hills intensified the impact.

“There was already some rainfall before Sunday, which had saturated the system. Additionally, the Akuapem Range experienced a downpour. Unfortunately, construction on the mountain is replacing vegetation with concrete structures. This increases surface runoff, and when that water flows downhill into areas with inadequate drainage, the result is flooding,” he said.

The three-hour downpour, which began around 3 PM on Sunday, coincided with rush hour, bringing traffic to a standstill and severely disrupting daily life in the capital.

Areas affected include Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adentan-Dodowa, parts of Tema, and other communities. Roads were rendered impassable, and numerous vehicles were left stranded in rising waters.

The floods NADMO confirmed claimed five lives and affected over 3,000 households in the Greater Accra Region alone.

In response, NADMO has urged city planners and residents to adhere to building regulations and invest in sustainable drainage systems to prevent future disasters.

Government advances fiscal reforms, new financing models to strengthen health sector

0

Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem speaking at a high-level panel in Geneva Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem speaking at a high-level panel in Geneva

Ghana is ramping up domestic resource mobilisation and exploring innovative health financing models to insulate its health system from external aid volatility, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem told a high-level panel at the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva.

Speaking at a side event on “Navigating a New Era of Global and Domestic Health Financing,” Ampem said the government is redirecting resources, deepening partnerships with the private sector, and introducing structural fiscal reforms to fund health services, as donor funding continues to decline.

“External aid is no longer a reliable solution,” Ampem said. “We must prioritise prevention, repurpose budgets, and unlock new investment through good governance and innovation.”

Ghana’s response comes amid growing concern across the continent over waning donor support and widening health financing gaps.

The World Bank estimates Africa’s health spending per capita remains significantly lower than in other regions, averaging just US$47 compared to more than US$4,000 in high-income countries.

Ampem emphasised the need to reorient policy around primary health care and preventive services. Since January 2025, the government has expanded access to clean water, sanitation, nutritious food, and immunisation, foundational measures, he said, are more cost-effective than treating diseases.

In a bid to stretch the health dollar, the government has also moved to fully allocate National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) funds for their intended purpose. This year’s budget increases National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) funding to GH¢9.8 billion from GH¢5.9 billion in 2024 — a 66 percent jump.

Over the medium term, Ghana plans to commit GH¢49.3 billion to NHIS, a significant rise from GH¢13.2 billion allocated between 2021 and 2024.

That fiscal commitment is being tested by shifting geopolitical and economic dynamics. Ghana is grappling with the fallout from the abrupt withdrawal of US$78 million in USAID health support, which had funded malaria, HIV/AIDS, and child health programs.

To mitigate the disruption, the country partnered with drone logistics firm Zipline to deliver medical supplies without increasing public spending.

“Being responsive to change is critical,” Ampem said.

“We leveraged technology and logistics to close urgent supply gaps and maintain continuity of care.”

Longer term, Ghana is seeking to bolster domestic tax revenues, which in sub-Saharan Africa average just 13 percent of GDP, through digitalised administration, curbing leakages, and widening the tax base.

It is also encouraging private sector participation through PPP frameworks.

A new Ghana Medical Trust Fund — dubbed MAHAMACARES — was launched to finance treatment for non-communicable diseases not covered under NHIS, and to crowd in private and philanthropic capital for health infrastructure and research.

However, the Deputy Minister cautioned that attracting private investment depends on improving governance and macroeconomic stability. Nearly half of Africa’s population now lives in countries where governance has worsened over the past decade, according to the 2024 Mo Ibrahim Index.

“Without fiscal discipline, we cannot build the systems that attract long-term investment,” he said.

As Africa’s population and strategic importance grow, Ampem said now is the time for the continent to translate its vision of health self-reliance into durable outcomes.

“We must move with urgency, unity, and foresight,” he said. “This is our opportunity to build resilient health systems for the future.”

SuperSport to replace StarTimes as official Ghana Premier League broadcast partner

SuperSport are reportedly in talks to broadcast the Ghana Premier League SuperSport are reportedly in talks to broadcast the Ghana Premier League

South African pay-TV giant SuperSport is likely to reach an agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to become the broadcast partner of the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

According to ghanasoccernet.com, persons involved in the deal have hinted that SuperSport is leading and likely to get the nod from the GFA to become the broadcast partner of the GPL for the 2025/2026 season.

The media organisation’s success in broadcasting leagues on the continent, specifically in Nigeria, Zambia, and South Africa, gives them an edge over their competitors.

This update comes after talks between the GFA and StarTimes for renewal of their contract collapsed over an outstanding debt of over $842,000.

The report seems to affirm a claim made by Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, saying that Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, was working on securing SuperSport to broadcast the local league.

However, it remains to be seen if the deal will come into fruition, as the GFA are yet to officially announce the broadcast partner.

Following the expiration of the previous deal, the Ghana Premier League currently has no official broadcast sponsor. In the meantime, some local television stations have stepped in to air the matches.

Officials from Premier League clubs have expressed frustration over their financial challenges in managing their teams.

Govt Breaches Local Governance Act – Minority

0

Frank Annoh-Dompreh

The Minority in Parliament has accused the Mahama-led administration of gross violations of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), following the government’s failure to release statutory funds due to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) nearly six months into the fiscal year.

The Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has accordingly expressed deep concern over what he described as the government’s “deliberate breach” of its statutory obligations, warning that the situation is jeopardising local governance and crippling development at the grassroots level.

Speaking at a press briefing in Parliament yesterday, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh said, “This administration stands in clear breach of Act 936 of the Local Governance Act. Not a single pesewa of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) has been disbursed since the year began, despite a clear allocation of GH¢7.51 billion stated in the 2025 budget.”

Quoting page 72 of the 2025 Budget, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Nsawam-Adoagyiri pointed to item 388, which confirms the approved allocation, stating, “Yet, nearly six months into the year, not even a penny has been paid. This is not only illegal but also in direct violation of a court ruling which stipulates that the DACF must be disbursed quarterly.”

Beyond the DACF, the Minority revealed that other key statutory funds have also been withheld, including the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).

“The NHIF, with an allocation of GH¢9.92 billion, has not received any disbursement. GETFund, allocated GH¢4.1 billion, is also yet to see a single release,” Mr. Annoh-Dompreh stated.

The MP expressed frustration that despite the introduction and increase of several revenue-generating taxes, including the Growth and Sustainability Levy – raised from 1% to 3% – the government has failed to make the corresponding payments into these legally mandated funds.

“We are collecting more in taxes, yet the government is failing to meet its most basic statutory obligations. It raises the question: where is the money?” he quizzed.

The Minority Chief Whip further criticised any claims that delays in appointing or confirming Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) were behind the situation.

“Even in the absence of confirmed MMDCEs, coordinating directors and regional ministers are legally empowered to act. That excuse doesn’t hold,” he insisted.

The MP lamented the operational paralysis now faced by many assemblies across the country, intimating, “Assemblies are being denied the financial oxygen they need to function. Development projects are stalled. Workers are demoralised. Local governance is under siege.”

He noted that the newly appointed Common Fund Administrator is currently idle, with no resources to distribute. “We’ve spoken with the Common Fund Administrator. He is simply sitting in his office, unable to perform his duties because the funds haven’t been released,” Mr. Annoh-Dompreh asserted.

The MP emphasised that this trend represents a dangerous precedent, especially coming from a government that once criticised similar delays while in opposition.

“Ironically, when they were not in power, they were vocal about delays in DACF payments. Today, they are doing worse,” he said.

He added that the Minority had supported the passage of the 2025 Budget in good faith, participating in the laying of over 40 motions, but now feels betrayed by the government’s failure to implement its own fiscal promises.

“We supported the budget process because of our patriotic duty. But now, something deeply worrying is creeping into our governance system—an intentional disregard for statutory commitments,” he stated.

With Parliament set to resume next week, the Minority is demanding that the Finance Minister appears before the House to provide a full explanation for the delay and a definitive timeline for releasing the funds.

“This is not about politics. This is about the law. This is about the welfare of our people. If these funds are not released immediately, we will explore all options available to us, including legal and parliamentary actions,” he concluded.

Total mobile money transactions hit GH₵365bn by April 2025

0

Data released by the Bank of Ghana has shown that the value of mobile money transactions went up significantly to reach GH₵365.0 billion by April 2025.

Compared to the same period last year, the value of transactions was at GH₵303.0 billion.

The data also showed that the number of transaction increased to 778 million in April 2025 compared to 630 million in April 2024.

The Balance of Float reached GH₵28.2 billion compared to GH₵19.3 billion.

The steady rise highlights the increasing preference for mobile financial services among individuals and businesses alike, as the nation continues to embrace digital payment solutions.

This increase further demonstrates the central role mobile money plays in enhancing financial access and facilitating daily transactions across the country, especially in areas underserved by traditional banking infrastructure.

The Bank of Ghana data also points to a sustained upward trend in mobile money usage, fuelled by greater mobile phone penetration, the expansion of agent networks, and the user-friendly nature of mobile platforms.

These factors have made mobile money an indispensable tool for financial inclusion and economic participation.

National Security Raids Wontumi’s House

0

Wontumi

A combined team of National Security operatives and Police officers this morning stormed the residence of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The operation, saw the security personnel surround the premises, although the reasons for the raid remain unclear.

It is also not yet confirmed whether Chairman Wontumi was present in the house.

Media report indicates that tension is high in the area as the heavily armed officers maintained a firm presence around the compound.

Meanwhile, supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) thronged the residence of Wontumi, following the attempted arrest by the security officers.

The crowd, which steadily grew throughout the morning, gathered in protest against the presence of heavily armed security personnel who had earlier surrounded the property.

The motive behind the operation remains unclear. Chairman Wontumi, who was reportedly inside the house during the raid, assured officers that he would respond to their invitation on Monday, May 26, 2025.

As tensions escalated and party loyalists chanted slogans in defiance, the NIB reportedly ordered the immediate withdrawal of all officers from the scene.

Wontumi’s Lawyer slams security operation as “immature” and wasteful

0

The lawyer for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—has sharply criticised the security operation carried out at his client’s residence, describing it as “immature” and unnecessary.

Kwame Adom-Appiah, who also serves as the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Secretary, questioned the conduct of the joint team of National Security operatives and Police officers who stormed Chairman Wontumi’s Kumasi residence on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Speaking to the media at the scene, Adom-Appiah condemned the scale and method of the operation, calling it excessive and a misuse of state resources.

“When you are going to arrest somebody, and you go with about 20 cars when the person is not a coup maker and has not intended to overthrow this government, I do not think it was useful,” he said. “Bringing about 20 cars is undesirable for this country and a cost to the state.

“You could have extended a common invitation to the person. Even if he failed to respond to that, there are proper ways to effect an arrest.”

The raid has heightened tensions in the area, with residents and onlookers visibly unsettled. A heavy security presence remains around the premises, although it is still unclear whether Chairman Wontumi is inside or what prompted the operation.

Channel One TV’s Hafiz Tijani, reporting from the scene, noted that the area remains on edge as heavily armed officers continue to guard the compound.

BREAKING: Cedi firms up to sell at GH¢10.83 to $1

0

Ghana’s local currency, the cedi, continues its upward momentum on the interbank market, registering notable gains against major trading currencies, particularly the US dollar.

According to Bloomberg data sighted by GhanaWeb Business on Friday May 23, 2025, the cedi is currently selling at GH¢10.83 to the dollar on the interbank market as of 12:25 GMT, an appreciation that reflects growing market confidence in Ghana’s recent economic reforms and improved foreign exchange management.

The Bank of Ghana, in its daily interbank FX update, reported the cedi trading at a buying price of GH¢11.62 and a selling price of GH¢11.63 to the dollar.

This development represents a continued narrowing of the spread between buying and selling prices, suggesting greater stability in forex markets.

The local currency is also firming up against the British pound and the Euro. The pound is being bought at GH¢15.60 and sold at GH¢15.62, while the Euro is trading at GH¢13.11 (buying) and GH¢13.12 (selling).

On the retail market, where rates tend to be higher due to overhead costs and margins, GhanaWeb Business checks as of 9:00 AM on May 23, 2025, revealed that the cedi is exchanging at GH¢12.50 to the dollar at some forex bureaus.

Additionally, the pound is being sold at GH¢17.20, while the Euro is going for GH¢14.50.

Meanwhile, the continued appreciation of the cedi is being viewed as a positive sign by market watchers, especially in light of last year’s volatility, when the currency depreciated to nearly GH¢17 to the dollar.

With inflationary pressures easing and investor confidence on the rise, the currency’s performance is seen as a critical indicator of Ghana’s ongoing economic recovery.

Ghana looks to get $12bn a year from small-scale gold mining

0

Ghana could generate up to $12 billion annually from small-scale gold production if output doubles as planned, according to Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of the Ghana Gold Board.

The country’s gold exports have surged alongside rising global prices, driven largely by growth in artisanal and small-scale mining.

To capitalize on this growth, the government has established a regulatory body to oversee all gold purchases and sales. The goal is to boost foreign currency reserves and curb illegal trade, Bloomberg reported.

“Our goal is to move above 3 tons a week” in purchases, up from about 1.5 tons a week in January, said Sammy Gyamfi, the Ghana Gold Board’s chief executive officer.

He added that while Ghana expects to generate around $6 billion by the end of this year, the country is confident it will achieve $12 billion in annual inflows starting next year.

Gold has long been central to Ghana’s economy. Once known as the Gold Coast during colonial times, the country remains one of the world’s largest gold producers. In 2019, Ghana overtook South Africa to become the continent’s leading gold producer.

Now, following a 2022 debt default that locked Ghana out of international capital markets, the country is turning to gold, its most valuable export, to stabilize its economy. With gold prices nearing $3,300 an ounce after record-breaking highs, Ghana is well-positioned to benefit.

Gold mining contributes about 7% to the country’s GDP. In 2023, Ghana’s gold exports soared by more than 50% to $11.6 billion, with roughly one-third of output coming from small-scale and artisanal miners.

As Africa’s leading gold producer, the nation has seen a major share of this growth come from small-scale and artisanal mining, which accounts for roughly a third of national output.

However, in recent years, artisanal and small-scale mining, often unregulated, has become increasingly prevalent.

While the law recognises small-scale mining as a legitimate economic activity, studies indicate that over 85% of operations remain informal and unregulated, occurring outside state oversight.

To curb smuggling and capture more foreign exchange, Ghana’s recently established gold regulator has increased its purchases from artisanal miners. Speaking in Accra, the regulator’s head, Gyamfi, said the move will help boost foreign reserves and stabilize the economy.

According to Ayisi, he was dealing with personal issues that needed his attention and even during that period, he continued to visit the studio to record songs.

“I took a break because I wasn’t going for interviews and was handling some personal stuff too. But I was always going back to the studio to record and getting ready for the right moment when everything had settled,” he explained.

Ayisi added that he didn’t want to rush anything. He preferred to wait for the right time to come back stronger.

“I’m not the type of person that will wait for everything to cool down before I’ll take actions,” he said.

The artiste noted that even though he wasn’t in the public eye, he was still focused on his music.

“I was still recording and going to the studio, doing what I should be doing and when the right moment came, I’m out here again,” he stated.

When asked whether he felt any pressure seeing other young artistes like KiDi and Kuami Eugene rise to fame, even though he started music before them, Ayisi answered that he has come to understand that not everyone is meant to chase fame.

“Now I’ve realized that some people are not made for the fame and all of the other stuff; some people are made for purpose,” he said.

A video has emerged on social media platforms showing footages of the arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi, also known as Adenta Kumi, at his residence in the early hours of Friday, May 23, 2025.

The video sighted by GhanaWeb, showed Alfred Kumi barefoot and casually dressed in navy blue-black shorts and a T-shirt, being escorted from his room to his house compound by armed security officials wearing bulletproof vests labeled “NIB”.

Among the voices heard in the footage was that of a distressed woman asking the officials where they were taking Kumi to.

Visibly shaken by the experience, the woman could be heard saying in a sorrowful tone, “Where are you taking him? They are taking him away.”

The officials instructed the woman filming the video to bring shoes for Kumi, who remained barefooted at the time – she complied and brought the pair of slippers as shown in the footage.

The officials attempted to prevent the person recording the video from continuing but Kumi could be seen and heard in the footage justifying the need for her to capture the exercise, stating that he did not know where he was being taken to and wanted to document it as evidence.

“She has to record this so that they will know where I am. Baby, record it because I don’t know where I’m going. Don’t be afraid, record it,” Kumi shouted.

The officials responded to this by stating that they were conducting their duties professionally and were not there to cause harm, as they sought to ease tensions and dispel any potential misconceptions.

“We are professionals, we are not here to harm anybody please. We are equally on camera and don’t want any issues. We are taking him to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters,” one of the NIB officials could be heard saying.

Alfred Kumi is currently involved in a petition to President John Dramani Mahama, seeking the dissolution of the committee investigating the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo over an alleged secret meeting.

Alfred Kumi, in his petition, cited allegations of misconduct which he believes could undermine the integrity of the inquiry being conducted by the Pwamang Committee into the removal of the Chief Justice.

Kumi alleged that on May 15, 2025, after the committee’s inaugural sitting, Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu along with Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area.

He claimed they were overheard discussing matters related to the petition.

Empress Gifty and Nana Agradaa

Evangelist Patricia Asiedu, widely known as Nana Agradaa, has denied receiving any official writ of summons from gospel musician Empress Gifty in connection with a reported GH₵20 million defamation lawsuit.

Speaking on Adom FM with OPD, Nana Agradaa stated clearly that she has not been formally served and only became aware of the lawsuit through social media.

“When someone sues another person in court, the person being sued needs to be handed over the writ of summons. As I speak to you, nobody has served me any court letter,” she said.

The writ, which surfaced online on May 21, 2025, accuses Nana Agradaa of making defamatory statements about Empress Gifty during a live broadcast on May 13, 2025.

Empress Gifty’s legal team argues that the comments have severely damaged her reputation, affected her family, and disrupted an upcoming international programme scheduled for August 2025.

In response, Nana Agradaa emphasized that legal procedures must be followed. “If anybody has an issue with me, I stay at Weija in Accra. In law, you need to come serve me the writ of summons,” she said. “If Empress has the guts to serve me the writ, she is welcome.”

The situation continues to unfold as the public awaits whether formal legal action will proceed.

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) index recorded over 30 percent growth in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025, emerging as the best-performing securities market in the West African sub-region.

Managing Director of the GSE, AbenaAmoah, made this announcement in Accra during Kasapreko Company’s presentation at the “Facts Behind the Figures” forum.

She attributed the remarkable performance to renewed investor confidence and increased activity on the bourse.

“As of May 18th, the GSE equities market has recorded a very impressive performance. Our index is up over 30 percent, the best in West Africa. Our financial stock index is also up by about 33 percent. There is renewed investor confidence and robust market activity,” she stated.

According to her, the current positive economic outlook is expected to further boost the performance of the exchange and position it to outperform other markets across the continent by the end of the year.

Ms. Amoah also revealed that the GSE’s market capitalization currently stands at over GH¢143 billion, representing more than a 70 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

However, she noted that this growth still needs to be assessed in relation to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“In our Fixed Income Market, the volume traded so far is about GH¢87 billion, compared to GH¢57 billion at the same time last year – anincrease of about 53 percent. There is progress, but there’s still more to be done,” she added.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of Kasapreko Company Limited, Richard Adjei, announced the company’s plans to list approximately 25 percent of its equity shares on the main market of the GSE.

He said the move is part of Kasapreko’s strategy to drive growth and scale up investments across the African continent.

Telecel Honours Epixode –

0

Epixode

Telecel Ghana has applauded reggae-dancehall musician, Epixode, with the for Good Award at the 26th Telecel Ghana Awards (TGMAs) for his outstanding purpose-driven music, advocating against illegal mining and its environmental destruction in mining communities.

Epixode received a prestigious recognition plaque and a sum of GH¢20,000.

The award acknowledges Epixode’s efforts in bringing increased awareness to one of Ghana’s most critical environmental crises, illegal mining (galamsey) and its devastating impact on the nation’s forest reserves, poisoning rivers, and threatening livelihoods through his song titled ‘Chooboi’.

The for Good Award aims to appreciate artistes who go beyond their craft to use their influence for good causes, including environmental sustainability, youth mentorship, health, education, and social development.

Presenting the award to Epixode, Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai expressed the telco’s appreciation for musicians who actively promote initiatives for positive social change.

“Every year, we look forward to honouring musicians who go beyond their craft to champion positive social causes that deliver impact. I will encourage artistes to use their star power to advocate on issues that have a profound impact on people’s lives,” Ing. Obo-Nai said.

Following his recognition, Epixode, in a video message, expressed gratitude to Telecel Ghana for the recognition and advised fellow musicians to use their music not only to trend, but to transform.

“Melodies and lyrics should be used to stir consciousness, speak truth, inspire hope and challenge the system that holds the people in chains. Let’s add our voice to help stop galamsey now,” Epixode said.

Over the past five years, several artistes have been honoured for their impactful contributions through the then Green Award, which was merged into the for Good Award in 2024.

Last year, gospel artiste Eugene Zuta won recognition for his multi-approach advocacy against human trafficking.

In 2023, Worlasi got the honour for his ‘Giving Shade’ tree-planting project, which transformed areas of Accra into greener neighbourhoods.

Stonebwoy clinched the award in 2022 for his song ‘Greedy Men’, which highlighted socio-economic challenges which affect communities, including weak leadership, illegal mining, corruption and child labour.

The for Good Award underscores the power of music in driving social change in Ghana.
