Look Elegant And Chic Even If Its For A Funeral. Black And Red Outfits For Your Inspiration

0

Dressing for a funeral doesn’t mean you have to compromise your sense of style. In moments of mourning, it is still possible to look composed, elegant, and respectful. Black and red outfits often chosen for their symbolism and grace offer the perfect blend of solemnity and style. Whether you’re attending a traditional ceremony or a modern remembrance event, choosing the right outfit can help you honour the occasion while still presenting yourself with dignity and poise.

The timeless black dress, for instance, remains a go-to for many women. However, when styled with thoughtful accessories, tailored cuts, or textured fabrics like lace, silk, or crepe, it evolves from basic to beautifully sophisticated. The addition of subtle red accents perhaps in a scarf, clutch, or delicate embroidery adds a touch of tradition and symbolism, especially in cultures where red denotes final honour or respect.

For ladies who prefer bolder fashion statements while remaining appropriate, a well-fitted red and black combination such as a red skirt paired with a structured black blouse or a modest Kaba and slit with intricate patterns can strike the right balance between tradition and trend. The beauty of these looks lies in the details: high-necklines, long sleeves, minimal yet meaningful jewellery, and graceful hairstyles to complement the look.

Ultimately, it’s about carrying yourself with grace while paying your last respects. Looking chic, respectful, and confident not only helps maintain your self-esteem in emotional moments but also sends a message of solidarity and love to those grieving. These funeral outfit inspirations are proof that elegance and empathy can go hand in hand.

Ibrahim Mahama gifts boxing legend Azumah Nelson a Toyota Fortuner vehicle

0

Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama has honoured boxing legend Azumah Nelson with a brand-new Toyota Fortuner and an undisclosed sum of money in a show of appreciation for the sporting icon’s enduring legacy.

The surprise presentation took place yesterday (June 17, 2025) at Mr Mahama’s office following a courtesy call by a delegation including Sharaf Mahama, son of President John Dramani Mahama and CEO of Legacy Rise Sports, and British-Nigerian heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

The group, fresh from their participation in the Battle of the Beasts boxing event at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Friday, June 13, 2025, had earlier paid a visit to President Mahama at the Jubilee House before heading to thank Mr Mahama for his support.

Describing Azumah Nelson as “arguably Africa’s greatest boxer”, Mr Mahama said the gesture was meant to celebrate not just the three-time world champion’s achievements in the ring, but also his continued contributions to sports and youth development in Ghana. Friends and dignitaries at the event looked on in admiration as Mr Mahama handed over the car keys in a moment that was both symbolic and emotional.

Azumah Nelson, visibly moved by the gesture, expressed his heartfelt gratitude. “I am grateful to you, Ibrahim Mahama, and to Sharaf Mahama for this big surprise. I didn’t expect this at all,” he said. “I am just supporting my son Sharaf who has shown great interest in promoting the sport I love.”

The gesture comes at a time when Nelson’s legacy continues to inspire younger generations, and his role in mentoring and supporting boxing initiatives has cemented his place not only in sporting history but in the hearts of Ghanaians.

Among those present were members of Anthony Joshua’s team, sports entrepreneur Yaw Sakyi Afari of RITE Sports Services, Henry Quarshie—businessman and a member of Azumah’s close team—as well as several associates from Legacy Rise Sports and friends of Ibrahim Mahama.

Reforms, Fintech needed to empower women entrepreneurs—Leaders say

0

Accra, June 17, GNA – Financial and philanthropic leaders have called for inclusive fintech solutions and policy reforms to close the digital and financial divide—particularly for rural women entrepreneurs.

They emphasised the need for rigorous tracking of remittance impacts on women and the development of gender-responsive investment mechanisms.

They made the call during a Regional Conference on ‘Sustainable Philanthropy and Remittances for Gender Equality’ held in Dakar, Senegal.

Co-hosted by UN Women and the Ford Foundation, the forum brought together over 150 thought leaders from philanthropy, finance, government, technology, and civil society.

In a release copied to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Maxime Houinato, UN Women Regional Director for West and Central Africa, encouraged African countries to “move from remittances to resilience.”

“We must shift from viewing remittances and philanthropy as acts of charity to seeing them as strategic levers for inclusive, sustainable change.

“Let’s stop designing systems around those who already have access, and start building for women who are off the grid yet hold entire families together…We too must build permanent bridges between the continent and its diaspora,” he stated.

The conference, among other things, examined how to align Africa’s diverse funding streams with the urgency of empowering women and girls.

Participants shared examples of how remittances could unlock opportunity when recognised as “intentional, long-term investments rather than one-off transfers.”

Dr. Catherine Chi-Chi Aniagolu, Ford Foundation Regional Director for West Africa stated: “This is not about aid; It is about shifting power and building systems…We must build a new architecture of giving—one that centers African women’s voices and leadership.”

Other participants advocated for structured partnerships among diaspora networks, local civil society, and public institutions.

Mr. Kofi Appenteng, President of the African American Institute, noted that African women and girls should not just be beneficiaries, but seen as “architects of their own futures.”

“Remittances are a quiet, perhaps surprising, success story…But any effort to scale them must stay grounded in the voices and needs of those sending and receiving—not just our theories of change,” he said.

The conference highlighted the importance of developing the right financial products and enabling environment.

Mr. Paul-Harry Aithnard, Ecobank Group Regional Director, said “Sending money home must go beyond consumption. With the right policies and investment products, diaspora capital can become a strategic engine for development.”

Foundations and financial institutions described how their funding models were evolving to embrace “inclusive, feminist, and locally rooted approaches.”

“When we launched the Tony Elumelu Foundation Grant in 2015, most applicants were men. Today, 45 percent of our grantees are women. Our goal is to build an ecosystem where women can thrive and lead,” Oniye Okolo, Policy and Partnerships Officer, stated.

“In all our advocacy and outreach activities, we strive to put women and girls first and address the funding gap and mentorship needs of women entrepreneurs, including those in the informal sector,” Ecobank Foundation CEO, Elisa Desbordes, added.

Ms. Ndeye Amy Ngom Seck, speaking on behalf of the Central Bank of West African States, highlighted strategies targeted at women.

“When women thrive, everyone benefits. That’s why our financial inclusion strategy puts women at the center—not just as beneficiaries, but as drivers of economic transformation…Reallocating even a portion of diaspora remittances toward their empowerment could be truly transformational,” she noted.

From maternal health to green entrepreneurship, the conference showcased how strategically aligned remittances and philanthropy could drive sustainable change.

‘You go to the best schools just to steal?’ – Edem slams ORAL report culprits

Edem is a popular Ghanaian rapper Edem is a popular Ghanaian rapper

Ghanaian rapper, Edem, has openly criticised some government appointees fingered in several cases of wide-scale embezzlement and money laundering scandals.

In a post on X on June 16, 2025, Edem questioned the value of formal education among such high-profile individuals who attain many degrees and still engage in embezzlement.

“You people go attend all the school in the world but not have the brains to figure out how to multiply money but only steal… So, what is the school for?” he asked.

His post comes in response to damning public revelations by the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the Attorney General, outlining widespread misappropriation in government agencies.

Earlier in June 2025, an audit revealed that the National Service Scheme payroll included approximately 81,885 fictitious names, while only 98,145 actual service personnel were confirmed, out of a previously listed 180,030 names.

This payroll fraud reportedly cost the state around GH¢50 million monthly, totaling roughly GH¢704 million annually.

In response, President Mahama ordered investigations, declared suspects wanted, froze assets, and directed the National Investigations Bureau to probe the scandal under the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) framework.

Additionally, Kwabena Adu‑Boahene, the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), was arrested by EOCO on charges of embezzling approximately GH¢49 million (about US$7 million) by diverting state funds through his company BNC Communications in a cyber-defence software deal.

Minority demands urgent evacuation of Ghanaian citizens trapped in Israel-Iran conflict

The Minority in Parliament has issued a stern call to action amid growing concerns over the safety of nearly 1,000 Ghanaians reportedly stranded in Israel.

In a statement released by the Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Minority criticised what it described as the government’s delayed response to the escalating Israel-Iran conflict.

They are demanding immediate action to evacuate Ghanaians following border closures and reports of scores being displaced in Iran amid escalating missile exchanges between the two nations.

“It is unacceptable that the authorities failed to act with the urgency required, despite clear early warning signs that the conflict was worsening.

This delay reflects a troubling degree of inefficiency, ineffectiveness, and a lack of proactive leadership at a time when swift action was imperative,” the statement read.

The Minority is pressing for the immediate activation of all diplomatic and logistical channels through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to facilitate the safe evacuation of Ghanaians from both Israel and Iran.

“We call on the Ministry to urgently develop a comprehensive evacuation strategy, in coordination with Ghana’s diplomatic missions, international partners, and other relevant stakeholders.

The apparent paralysis in the State’s ability to protect and assist its citizens in this time of crisis is deeply regrettable and utterly unacceptable,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that 922 Ghanaians currently in Israel are being supported with access to bomb shelters as tensions intensify.

Evacuations from Iran are underway via land routes, while consular staff are coordinating logistics and managing a newly established emergency consular fund.

ECG forced to disconnect Ghana Broadcasting Corporation due to an outstanding debt ECG forced to disconnect Ghana Broadcasting Corporation due to an outstanding debt

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has been forced to disconnect the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) due to an outstanding debt of GH¢3,153,484.98.

Despite a previously agreed payment plan, GBC failed to meet its obligations, leaving ECG with no choice but to take this drastic measure.

This move is part of ECG’s nationwide revenue mobilisation exercise aimed at retrieving debts from residential, commercial, industrial, and government institutions, including Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.

In a video shared by Channel One TV on their social media platforms showed ECG officials at GBC, proceeding with the disconnection.

The ECG, in a statement released on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, and sighted by GhanaWeb Business, announced that the revenue mobilisation exercise would be conducted nationwide from June 16 to June 17, 2025.

“The exercise is aimed at retrieving outstanding payments from all categories of customers who owe the company,” the statement read.

Special monitoring teams have been deployed to oversee the process and to ensure compliance. ECG has warned that customers who interfere with the exercise or attempt illegal self-reconnections after being disconnected will face arrest and prosecution.

“Customers with arrears are advised to pay their bills now to avoid disconnection and the payment of reconnection fees,” the company emphasised.

The recent action against major public institutions signals ECG’s firm stance on debt recovery as the company works to reduce financial losses and enhance electricity service delivery across the country.

AstroTurf in Takoradi submerge after heavy downpour

The Effiekuma AstroTurf has been in a deplorable state for sometime The Effiekuma AstroTurf has been in a deplorable state for sometime

An Astroturf facility in Effiakuma, Takoradi, in the Western Region has been submerged following torrential rains in the area.

The artificial pitch, constructed by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) in 2018 to harness football talent in the Effiakuma constituency, has been plagued by drainage problems since its inception.

According to myjoyonline.com, construction of the facility officially began in 2018, with Ghana Gas cutting the sod for the project, reportedly at a cost of $200,000.

A viral video showed residents, mostly children and teenagers, swimming in the pitch-turned-pool, while others continued to play football in the flooded facility.

The video was first shared on Facebook by David Tetteh Botchway, a retired footballer.

Despite the significant investment, the facility has failed to withstand heavy rainfall, raising serious concerns about its design and maintenance.

This has led many residents in the constituency to question the facility’s durability.

People have taken to social media to express frustration and disappointment, with one user commenting, “It’s a shame that a facility built from the public purse can’t withstand a little rain, another waste of taxpayers’ money.”

The Effiakuma Astroturf incident highlights the urgent need for proper design, construction, and maintenance of sports facilities to ensure they are resilient to the elements and provide safe, functional spaces for athletes.

Kenya protesters clash with men wielding clubs

0

Albert Ojwang's death in custody has sparked anger in Kenya Albert Ojwang’s death in custody has sparked anger in Kenya

Kenyan protesters have clashed with club-carrying young men, believed to be loyal to the government, in the centre of the capital, Nairobi.

The demonstration, held in the wake of the death in custody 10 days ago of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang, was called to demand the sacking of a top police officer.

Police initially said that Mr Ojwang died of self-inflicted wounds, but were forced to retract the statement after an autopsy found that it was likely he died after being assaulted. Two policemen have been arrested in connection with the death.

The protest comes amid simmering tension ahead of next week’s first anniversary of the storming of parliament by demonstrators.

Earlier on Tuesday, there were pockets of violence in the capital’s central business district when groups of young men riding motorbikes, armed with whips and clubs, attacked protesters.

Videos show the men seemingly working side-by-side with police, who fired teargas to try and disrupt the demonstrations.

The Reuters news agency reported earlier that its staff saw the body of one man on the street with a head wound, but Kenya’s police spokesman said he was unaware of a death. The AFP news agency is quoting a hospital source as saying that the man was still alive but in a critical condition.

Officers had been deployed across key parts of the city, in an attempt to block protesters from accessing major intersections and government buildings.

But activists want him removed from office as it was his complaint against the blogger that led to the young man’s arrest. The 31-year-old was accused of defaming Mr Lagat on social media.

“We shall not be intimidated. We shall remain unbowed. We want Lagat to step aside,” one protester told the BBC.

“We want the guy to resign and we want the guy to be arrested. We want him to sit there and answer questions, you know. [He is] still on the payroll, enjoying taxpayers’ money,” another said.

The situation in Nairobi remains tense. Most businesses in the city centre are shut and there are visibly fewer people than usual on the streets.

Last year’s protests, led by young Kenyans, were against an unpopular finance bill which sought to introduce new taxes. It culminated in the protesters entering parliament on 25 June and forcing the government to drop the controversial proposals.

There are no contentious tax measures this year, but activists plan to build up momentum for what they are calling “a total shutdown” of business next Wednesday.

Enough of the in-fighting, let’s rebuild for 2028 – Abena Osei-Asare to NPP bigwigs, grassroots

0

Former Minister of State at the Finance Ministry and Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, Abena Osei-Asare, is calling on the rank and file of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to halt the infighting and blame games, and instead focus on rebuilding, retooling, and recapturing power in the 2028 general elections.

According to the former minister, one of the factors that led to the NPP’s defeat was the party’s failure to publicise its achievements at the constituency and community levels.

Speaking to delegates and the 2024 campaign team in Atiwa, Abena Osei-Asare, who also served as Deputy Minister in charge of Revenue, said President Akufo-Addo’s administration did a lot to transform Ghana, but many party members failed to communicate the achievements due to internal concerns. She noted, however, that those members have now come to regret their silence.

Calling for rebranding and unity, she urged party faithful to move past the defeat and work hard to rebuild the NPP’s image in preparation for the next election.

“There’s no time to split hairs over spilled milk. All hands must be on deck to support the rebuilding process and take tough decisions that will position the party for victory,” she said.

On the upcoming internal elections, the MP encouraged grassroots involvement in selecting candidates who are widely accepted and committed to unity. She also called on aspirants — from flagbearer through national, regional, constituency, to local levels — to be measured in their utterances to preserve party unity and support the 2028 agenda.

Touching on the performance of the NPP government, Osei-Asare stated that despite the party’s efforts, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) worked hard to discredit the administration.

“The NDC demonised our government, yet they are now introducing taxes through the back door,” she claimed.

She criticised the new energy levy introduced by the current government, calling it “insensitive” and “too harsh” on Ghanaians. While referencing the suspended petroleum tax of GHS 4.50 per gallon under the NPP, she noted that had it been implemented, it would have increased the cost of living significantly.

“The government must show genuine commitment to building efficiency in the energy sector, not impose harsh taxes and frequently review levies,” she added.

NPP’s loss due to frustration, nothing to do with our candidate’s religion – Freddie Blay

0

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has attributed the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections to public frustration and disillusionment, not religious considerations.

Speaking on AsaasePa 107.3 FM, Mr Blay admitted that the loss came as a surprise, especially considering what he described as the significant achievements of the Akufo-Addo administration.

“I didn’t see our defeat coming and, of course, the Akufo-Addo administration performed better,” he said. “But this is human science and not physical science.”

He strongly dismissed claims that religious factors influenced the electoral outcome, stressing Ghana’s secular nature and the voting patterns across constituencies.

“It is not true that religion played a role in our defeat. Ghana is a secular state and people do not vote based on religion,” he argued. “Even in some Christian constituencies, our candidate got more votes than in Muslim constituencies.”

According to Mr Blay, the real reasons behind the NPP’s defeat were a combination of unpopular tax policies, slow delivery on government promises, and ineffective communication with the electorate.,

“From myriads of taxes to slow performance to ineffective communication, people got frustrated and so we lost the election,” he said. “Even some of our own party members were disappointed and withheld their votes.”

Despite the defeat, Mr Blay expressed confidence in the party’s future. He revealed plans for a conference as part of a broader rebranding effort aimed at reconnecting with the grassroots and rebuilding public trust.

“We accept the defeat, and we are monitoring keenly what the new government brings on board. But we are restrategising,” he noted. “Things are not that good, but in the next years, we will come back and recapture power and serve Ghana.”

Buttey chairs NPP NEC meeting as Ntim takes medical leave

0

Danquah Smith Buttey, First Vice Chairperson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is currently leading a crucial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in the absence of the party’s National Chairman, Stephen Ayensu Ntim.

This follows a formal letter from Mr. Ntim’s family to the party’s Council of Elders requesting that the he(National Chairman) be temporarily excused from official duties due to medical reasons.

In the letter dated June 16, 2025, the family cited “cognitive dissonance and mental incapacitation” as grounds for their request, stressing that his continued involvement in party activities could further endanger his health and infringe on his rights.

The letter signed by family members including Kingsley Oteng (Family Head), Adelaide Ntim (MP), and other close relatives, highlighted Mr. Ntim’s decades of commitment to the party—from his time as First National Deputy Chairman to his current leadership.

Despite this dedication, the family stated, “Steve is not well at the moment,” and appealed for his exemption from the June 17 NEC meeting at the Alisa Hotel, which he was expected to chair.

“Common sense dictates that Steve, as a matter of urgency, be temporarily excused, not only from the rigours of active politics, but from intra-party activities in order to make way for needed peace and solace and for concentration on the ongoing required medical treatment process,” the letter read.

In Mr. Ntim’s absence, Mr. Buttey has stepped in to chair the NEC session, which includes a review of the work of the party’s Constitutional Review Committee and deliberations on internal reforms and preparations for the 2024 general elections.

Citi News has independently confirmed the ongoing meeting and Mr. Buttey’s role as acting chair.

The judge ruled he could serve 19 years at the same time, meaning the child sex crimes only added one year to his existing sentence.

The news of Kelly’s overdose comes just a week after his lawyers accused prison officials of ‘soliciting an inmate to kill him’.

In a filing seen by Variety, his attorney, Beau B. Brindley, claimed that the team had ‘explicit evidence that officials solicited an inmate to murder him while in custody’.

His counsel provided a sworn declaration from Mikeal Glenn Stine, a terminally ill inmate, who said that officials ‘offered him freedom in his final days in exchange for Kelly’s murder’.

Brindley informed People that Kelly has asked US President Donald Trump for a presidential pardon, as he fears for his life in prison.

‘We are in open discussions with people close to President Trump. And those discussions have expanded and intensified since we filed our motion.

‘We believe that President Trump is the only person with the courage to help us.’

Kelly’s lawyer added that apparently he is scared he will be poisoned in prison.

‘Immediately after our motion became public, Robert was thrown into solitary confinement.

‘He cannot make phone calls to his family. He has no access to commissary. He has spiders crawling over him while he tries to sleep.’

Teacher trainees to receive only one meal daily

0

The Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) has announced that, effective Monday, June 16, 2025, teacher trainees will be provided with only one hot meal a day.

In a statement, PRINCOF explained that financial constraints have made it impossible to continue providing three meals daily.

While we acknowledge the importance of adequate nutrition to trainee welfare and academic performance, we must also ensure that feeding arrangements are realistic and within the financial capacity of our institutions, the statement said.

PRINCOF expressed gratitude to the leadership of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) for their continued partnership and acknowledged the government’s commitment to the GH¢400 monthly feeding grant allocated to each trainee.

However, PRINCOF explained that out of the GH¢400 allocation, GH¢196 — equivalent to GH¢8.00 per day — is designated for meals, based on an agreement between PRINCOF and TTAG.

After extensive consultations across all 47 public Colleges of Education, PRINCOF has concluded that it is no longer viable to continue providing three meals a day on the current GH¢8.00 daily allocation, the statement noted.

PRINCOF emphasized that the decision was not made lightly but was necessary to safeguard essential services and ensure the long-term sustainability of the Colleges of Education.

It reiterated its commitment to working collaboratively with TTAG, the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and other stakeholders to find sustainable solutions to trainee welfare challenges.

Lower bench conditions must be improved to attract more Lawyers – Justice Mensah

0

Supreme Court nominee, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, has highlighted the need to improve the conditions of service for judges at the lower courts to attract more qualified lawyers into the judiciary.

According to him, many lawyers prefer to join the superior courts due to better incentives and working conditions, leaving the lower courts, which handle the bulk of judicial work, less resourced in terms of legal expertise.

Speaking during the vetting of Supreme Court nominees on Tuesday, June 17, Justice Mensah underscored the critical role of lower court judges in ensuring quality justice delivery at the foundational level of the judicial system.

“The conditions of service, particularly at the lower court, must be attractive to lawyers to start from the lowest bench. Quite often, lawyers who would want to join the bench would want to join it from the superior court, but when we talk about the work of the court, it is those down there who normally do the bulk of the work.

“When we are talking about quality justice, it starts from down there. Therefore, to attract lawyers to start from the lower end of the ladder, it means that the conditions of service must be very attractive. I believe that when the conditions of service are attractive, many lawyers will join the bench,” he said.

NPP Group Calls For Urgent Post-Election Defeat Reforms

0

Mohammed Issah addressing the media

An association calling itself the National Identifiable Group of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the party’s leadership to embrace sweeping internal reforms aimed at reviving the party’s democratic principles and restoring public trust following its defeat in the 2024 general election.

Addressing the media yesterday, the group, which describes itself as a coalition of loyal, independent-minded NPP members from across the country, said the party must not retreat into complacency but must urgently reform if it is to remain relevant and competitive ahead of the 2028 elections.

“We speak not as dissenters, but as reformers — determined to help the NPP reclaim its soul,” the spokesperson, Mohammed Issah read the statement of the group.

Key Grievances and Proposals

The group outlined seven key areas of concern which its members said had eroded the party’s integrity and alienated its grassroots members.

The group condemned the growing practice of imposing leaders through elite endorsements, advocating instead for a transparent, bottom-up process that empowers all members to participate in selecting party leaders, including the flagbearer.

The group also raised allegations of sidelining certain members through questionable changes to the party album, calling for a decentralised and transparent audit of the album to restore fairness and inclusivity.

Arguing that a small electoral college is prone to manipulation, the NPP group recommended broadening the voting base to include wider representation from constituencies and grassroots supporters.

It also proposed replacing the current delegate system, which the group said fosters vote-buying and coercion, with a one-member-one-vote (OMOV) system that would give every card-bearing NPP member a direct say in internal elections.

The group cited an alleged declining credibility in the party’s internal electoral processes, and called for the establishment of an impartial internal electoral commission, supported by independent observers, to guarantee fairness.

The Identifiable Group raised concerns about undue interference in the work of elected national and regional officers, stressing the need to uphold institutional discipline and allow elected officers to function independently.

The group criticised the entrenchment of political patronage over merit, recommending that future appointments and endorsements be based strictly on competence and fairness.

Mohammed Issah, who is also the Ashanti Regional Chairman, urged the party’s National Council, National Executive Committee, and Council of Elders to open the door for reforms, emphasising that the NPP’s survival hinges on bold restructuring rather than clinging to outdated practices.

“This is not the time to retreat. This is the time to reform. Let every card-bearing member have a voice. Let fairness return. Let the NPP rise again,” Issah stated.

The group expressed its readiness to work with the leadership to rebuild the party on the foundations of democracy, freedom, and justice, warning that failure to do so could risk further disconnection from the party’s grassroots base.

Asante Akyem North MCE nominee confirmed amidst NDC’s boycott

0

National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives in the Asante Akyem North constituency in the Ashanti Region on Monday boycotted the confirmation of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee, Sarah Amoakowaa.

Some NDC assembly members also joined the boycott, leaving only members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to approve her.

Speaking to Adom News, the NDC members accused Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, of manipulating the confirmation process.

They claimed that following their boycott, Dr. Amoakohene brought in a new group of government appointees to ensure the process continued.

The Youth Organiser, Willington Dawuda Kwame, therefore declared that they cannot work with Madam Amoakowaa, describing her confirmation as illegal.

The constituency First Vice Chairman, Collins Afira, also expressed disappointment in Dr. Amoakohene and the national executives of the NDC.

On May 16, 2025, Madam Amoakowaa failed to secure her confirmation after falling short of the required two-thirds majority.

Out of the 31 assembly members who voted, Amoakowaa secured only 17 votes.

Tensions flared even before the final tally was announced, with reports of heated exchanges among the assembly members.

The situation escalated, resulting in some damages, prompting state security officials to intervene and restore calm.

Adum Blue Light market fire victims reject Mayor’s demolition decision

0

Victims of the Adum Blue Light market fire incident have strongly objected to a decision by Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, to demolish their rebuilt structures.

The traders claim they are using their own resources to redevelop the dilapidated buildings and have urged the mayor to allocate his funds to other projects.

The mayor had set July 31st as a deadline for the demolition, deeming the traders’ rebuilding efforts “illegal and non-technical.”

“I don’t know the reason why some people want to lose money twice, with whatever they do, I will pull it down and rebuild it, so any time they close they should go along with their items because they will come one day and see it down,” said Mr. Boadi.

However, the traders argue that if the government were to rebuild, the stores would likely be allocated based on political considerations, rather than being returned to their rightful owners.

One of the traders, Prince Owusu, expressed frustration, stating that the contractor is nearing completion of the rehabilitation work.

“We should allow you to come and build it within three years to delay our business, it’s impossible,” he claimed.

The traders claimed that the support from philanthropists and contributions from affected individuals are the source of funding for the rebuilding.

The fire incident occurred on March 21, 2025, destroying three-story buildings and hundreds of shops.

Despite the challenges, business has started to bounce back, with some shop owners rebuilding their stores.

Culverts are being constructed to prevent flooding in the rainy season.

Ghana must brace for US tariff hikes

0

Dr. Abudu Abdul-Ganiyu urged a renewed focus on regional integration and intra-African trade Dr. Abudu Abdul-Ganiyu urged a renewed focus on regional integration and intra-African trade

Ghana risks facing uneven shocks to its export economy if recent US tariff increases persist, despite sending less than 3% of its total exports to the American market in 2024, a leading economist has cautioned.

Dr Abudu Abdul-Ganiyu, Co-Founder and Senior Partner at Emerging Markets Advisory Limited, raised the alarm during a high-level breakfast meeting in Accra on Monday, themed “Impact of U.S. Tariff Increases on Ghana’s Exports: Risks, Realities, and Response Strategies.”

The meeting, convened by EM Advisory, sought to assess the potential fallout of evolving US trade policy on Ghana’s economy.

While Ghana’s export exposure to the United States may appear minimal, Dr Abdul-Ganiyu emphasised that the effects of sustained tariffs would disproportionately harm sectors such as cocoa and oil, as well as small exporters who have yet to diversify their trading partners.

“These exporters have carved out niche markets in the U.S. and are especially vulnerable to shifts in American trade policy. The anticipated decline in export revenue could deepen inequality and destabilise livelihoods in affected sectors,” he said.

Dr Abdul-Ganiyu also warned of broader economic repercussions if the current US tariff regime triggers retaliatory actions from major trading partners like China and the European Union.

Although President Trump’s administration, under which the policy originated, had paused certain tariff hikes and maintained a base rate of 10%, negotiations remain tense.

“Several industrialised economies are signalling their readiness to retaliate unless the U.S. revises its stance. This tit-for-tat trade climate could plunge the global economy into deeper uncertainty,” he noted.

Quoting projections from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), he said a universal 10% rise in US tariffs, accompanied by countermeasures from China and the eurozone, could shrink US GDP by 1% and global GDP by 0.5% by 2026.

Furthermore, the risk of a global recession has risen from 30% to 40%.

Dr Abdul-Ganiyu highlighted the “redistribution effects” of such tariffs, noting that the disruption extends beyond direct exporters.

As demand for affected U.S. goods and services falls, resources such as labour and capital may shift to unaffected sectors, creating pressure on wages and rents and diminishing overall welfare.

Additionally, remittance inflows from Ghanaians in the US, a key support for many households, could decline, potentially affecting Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves and the stability of the cedi.

To cushion the effects of such external shocks, Dr Abdul-Ganiyu urged a renewed focus on regional integration and intra-African trade, which currently accounts for just 16% of Africa’s total trade, far below that of Europe (68%), Asia (58%), and North America (31%).

“Ghana and the rest of Africa must look inward. West Africa, where Ghana contributes about 3.8% to intra-African trade, has room to grow,” he stressed.

He called for policies that promote balanced continental growth and strengthen regional trade networks, particularly within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The economist also identified the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a vital strategic buffer against global trade disruptions. With a market of 1.4 billion people, AfCFTA offers a platform to drive investment, foster industrialisation, and reduce Africa’s over-reliance on foreign markets.

“Governments must expedite the removal of trade barriers under AfCFTA. We have a unique opportunity to position Africa as a competitive, self-reliant trade bloc,” Dr Abdul-Ganiyu said.

The breakfast meeting brought together policymakers, trade experts, business leaders, and development partners, all exploring strategies to navigate the new realities of global commerce.

Asante Kotoko set to part ways with midfielder Justice Blay – Report

0

Kumasi-based giants Asante Kotoko are set to part ways with experienced midfielder Justice Blay in the coming days, following a mutual agreement to terminate his contract.

The decision, according to close sources within the club, has been reached amicably between the player and the management. Although the club is yet to issue an official statement, an announcement is expected imminently as both parties finalize the necessary paperwork.

Justice Blay, who rejoined the Porcupine Warriors in 2021 after an impressive loan stint from Medeama SC, has been a key figure in the midfield, known for his tough tackling, composure on the ball, and leadership on the pitch.

He is reportedly set for a move to an unnamed Algerian side, which has resulted in his contract termination.

Blay’s impending departure marks the latest development in what is expected to be a busy off-season for Kotoko as they look to rebuild their squad ahead of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League campaign.

Comedian cum social commentator Kwaku Sintim‑Misa popularly known as KSM has criticized the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and Attorney General for what he describes as a parade of press conferences with no concrete results.

In a video posted on his YouTube channel, he lamented the extent of looting and embezzlement across some major government agencies while the country was in debt and had to secure funding from the IMF.

According to him, the country could progress if such monies are recovered.

“The numbers that are being looted are staggering. It’s sad. If you think about the fact that we had to go to the IMF to beg. Yet people were looting.

“If we can recover the loot, all these taxes would have been needless,” he said.

KSM further challenged the anti-corruption agencies to move from talk to action, stating that Ghanaians are tired of the press conferences.

“So, to the OSP and the AG. Let’s see something. We can’t allow the steam to be lost; put more fire under the pot.

“Every time the OSP is organising press conferences, we are tired. Start moving. Unless he doesn’t have evidence. If he has evidence, chase them. Recover the money. Don’t show any mercy to any criminal,” he said.

He urged authorities to intensify investigations under the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative, stating, “No more talk, start recovering stolen funds!”

’20 judges should be appointed to the Supreme Court’

Justice Philip Bright Mensah has been nominated to the Supreme Court Justice Philip Bright Mensah has been nominated to the Supreme Court

Supreme Court judge nominee, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, is advocating for the appointment of at least 20 justices to the Supreme Court to ensure timely justice delivery and improve efficiency.

He made the recommendation during his appearance before the Appointments Committee on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, for his vetting.

Justice Mensah explained that the current volume of cases before the apex court necessitates an increase in the number of justices to effectively manage the workload.

He argued that such a move would not only help reduce the backlog of cases but also strengthen public confidence in the judiciary.

“So, if you ask me the minimum number I would recommend for appointment to the Supreme Court, given the nature of the work they do, I would suggest 20 judges,” he said. “Given the number of cases in the Supreme Court, in my humble opinion, I believe 20 judges would be appropriate.”

He added, “It is clear that there are more cases now, and as the caseload increases, it is only fair and reasonable that more judges are appointed to handle them.”

Ghanaian investors sue Nigerian Police, EFCC over Abuja land dispute

0

Ghanaian businessmen file a lawsuit against senior Nigerian police and anti-corruption officials Ghanaian businessmen file a lawsuit against senior Nigerian police and anti-corruption officials

A group of Ghanaian businessmen behind the River Park Estate development in Abuja has filed a lawsuit against senior Nigerian police and anti-corruption officials, accusing them of harassment, intimidation, and suppressing a key investigative report in an ongoing land ownership dispute.

According to a report by Starrfm.com.gh, the suit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, names the Inspector General of Police, the FCT Commissioner of Police, the Head of the IGP Monitoring Unit, DCP Akin Fakorede, and top officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), including Zonal Commander Michael Wetkas and investigator Eunice Vou Dalyop.

The Ghanaian investors, led by Sir Samuel Esson Jonah, Kojo Ansah Mensah, and Victor Quainoo, are seeking ₦200 million in exemplary damages.

They are also demanding the immediate release of the findings of a Special Investigation Panel that probed the dispute, and are seeking a perpetual injunction to stop further harassment.

The dispute centers on a 2013 joint venture agreement involving JonahCapital and its development partner, Houses for Africa, who allege that Paulo Homes Limited and its CEO, Paul Odili, illegally encroached on over 120 hectares of land beyond what was agreed.

The Ghanaian developers further accuse Mr. Odili of falsifying land approval documents to claim ownership of the disputed plots.

Despite the completion of an internal police investigation, the plaintiffs claim that the report remains unpublished.

Instead, they allege a fresh investigation has been launched by the same police unit, an act they believe is intended to undermine the original findings and place them at risk of double jeopardy.

Adding a diplomatic dimension to the case, both the Ghana High Commission in Nigeria and the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation have formally requested access to the investigative report, but those requests have reportedly been ignored.

The plaintiffs argue that their constitutional rights, specifically their rights to dignity, property, and freedom of movement, have been violated.

They cite Sections 35 and 36 of the Nigerian Constitution and provisions in the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

As the case heads to court, the Ghanaian investors say they are counting on the Nigerian judiciary to uphold the rule of law, ensure accountability, and safeguard the rights of foreign investors operating within the country.

Mali begins building Russian-backed gold refinery

0

Gen Assimi Goïta says a long-awaited dream is becoming a reality Gen Assimi Goïta says a long-awaited dream is becoming a reality

Mali’s military junta has started building a gold refinery in partnership with a Russian conglomerate, the Yadran Group.

The project would embody the West African nation’s assertion of its “economic sovereignty”, and ensure the nation benefited from its mineral wealth, military leader Gen Assimi Goïta said.

He has strengthened military and economic ties with Russia since seizing power in a coup in 2021, while reducing relations with former colonial power France and other Western nations.

This reflects a broader trend in the region, with neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger also pivoting towards Russia after the overthrow of civilian leaders.

Western firms have since been facing a tough time – the latest example being Mali’s decision to put a huge gold mine, run by Canadian giant Barrick, into administration, effectively bringing it under state control.

On Monday, Gen Goïta – along with Yadran Group head Irek Salikhov – attended a ceremony for the construction of the refinery, which will have a 200-tonne capacity, in Senou, not far from the capital, Bamako.

Mali would having a majority stake in the refinery, and Yadran Group a minority share.

Mr Salikhov hailed the plant as a “win-win” for both nations, saying the aim was to turn the refinery into “a regional centre for processing gold extracted not only in Mali, but also in neighbouring countries like Burkina Faso”.

No date has been announced for its completion, but Gen Goita said: “It’s a long-awaited dream of the Malian people, and today it’s becoming a reality.”

The plant would enable Mali to “refine all the gold mined on its soil, ending decades of crude export to foreign refineries”, he added.

Mali is Africa’s second-biggest producer of gold, but many of its people remain poor 65 years after independence.

LilWin ‘drags’ Opambour over mockery of defeated boxer with Adom Kyei-Duah sticker

0

Kumawood actor LilWin has fired back at Prophet Ebenezer Adarkwa Yiadom, popularly known as Opambour, following the preacher’s comments mocking Ghanaian boxer Joseph Sackey after his recent defeat.

On June 14, 2025, Joseph Sackey took part in a boxing match at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

The boxer, who wore a pair of blue shorts adorned with the image and sticker of popular preacher Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah, suffered a fifth-round defeat to his opponent Abdul Khan.

The match quickly went viral on social media, with netizens commenting on the irony of Sackey’s loss despite the symbolic backing of Adom Kyei-Duah’s ‘spiritual sticker’.

Joining in the discussion, Opambour mocked both Sackey and prophet Adom Kyei Duah.

Opambour said if the boxer had sought his counsel before the bout, he would have predicted the outcome.

“When it comes to pastors truly anointed in this country, my name must be mentioned. If the boxer had come to me, I would’ve told him whether he would win or lose. When Bukom Banku wanted to fight, he consulted me, and he won,” Opambour said.

But LilWin, clearly irritated by Opambour’s statements, has accused the prophet and his associates of envy and hypocrisy.

Defending Adom Kyei-Duah and the boxer, LilWin said, “Before you criticise the boxer, check his track record. Joseph Sackey has won several matches. You’re laughing at him because of one defeat? Shame on you! Even legends like Anthony Joshua and Mike Tyson have been beaten before. Your comments are driven by jealousy,” LilWin stated.

LilWin did not hold back, further describing Opambour and his fellow pastors as “shallow thinkers.”

“You pastors don’t think. Do you believe mocking Sackey will bring down Adom Kyei Duah? You’re wrong. That will never happen. No wonder your church members are leaving,” he added.

Minority Caucus welcomes Fitch upgrade but flags risks to 2025 Budget credibility

0

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has welcomed the latest credit rating upgrade of Ghana’s economy by the international ratings agency Fitch.

Describing it as a validation of ongoing recovery efforts, the Caucus was quick to caution that doubts over budget credibility could undermine long-term fiscal stability.

This was in a joint statement signed by the Ranking Member on the Finance Committee, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, and the Ranking Member on the Committee on Economy and Development, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, on Tuesday, June 17.

The Minority acknowledged Fitch’s decision to upgrade Ghana’s sovereign rating following the country’s significant progress with debt restructuring and signs of macroeconomic stability.

Fitch’s upgrade, announced earlier this week, cited Ghana’s successful restructuring of approximately $13 billion in Eurobond debt—concluded in October 2024—as a key reason for the improved outlook.

The ratings agency noted that the restructuring had sharply reduced the country’s debt service obligations, significantly lowering the risk of default in the medium term.

The Minority attributed this milestone primarily to initiatives started under the previous NPP government, which they claim secured a total debt relief package of about $12 billion.

They also commended the current NDC administration for continuing the process by pursuing the restructuring of the remaining $2.6 billion in commercial debt, about 5% of the total external debt profile.

“The completion of the restructuring of this remaining component will be useful in completing the programme,” the statement read.

According to Fitch, Ghana posted a strong current account surplus of 4.3% of GDP in 2024—the highest in recent years—though it expects the figure to decline to 1.1% by 2026.

Inflation has also shown a downward trajectory, falling from a high of 44% in 2022 to 23% in 2024, and reaching 18% in May 2025.

However, the agency warned that the government’s inflation target of 11% for 2025 may be missed, projecting an end-year rate of 15%.

Fitch also praised Ghana’s resilience during the debt restructuring period, noting a robust GDP growth of 5.7% in 2024.

However, it forecasted slower growth rates of 4.0% and 4.5% for 2025 and 2026, respectively.

“These developments vindicate the NPP’s stance that the economy bequeathed to the NDC was strong and laid the foundation for accelerating economic development,” the Minority leaders said.

Despite welcoming the improved outlook, the Minority expressed concern over several critical elements of the 2025 budget flagged by Fitch as lacking credibility. Chief among these was the projected fiscal performance.

The government’s 2025 budget targets a primary surplus of 1.5% on a commitment basis, a key benchmark under the IMF program. However, Fitch estimates the figure will fall short, ending the year at just 0.5%, a full percentage point below target.

“This casts doubt on the government’s ability to meet the IMF target and raises red flags about overall fiscal discipline,” the statement noted.

Additionally, Fitch raised questions about the government’s revenue-enhancement measures, suggesting that debt servicing costs relative to revenue could worsen in 2025 and 2026.

The debt service-to-revenue ratio is projected to climb to 26% from 25% in 2024, signalling possible stress in meeting fiscal obligations.

The Minority believes the rating upgrade could have been even stronger had these fiscal risks been adequately addressed.

In light of Fitch’s findings, the Minority has urged the Finance Minister to revise the government’s fiscal targets when the mid-year budget is presented in July.

“We urge the government to take steps to ensure that further incidents that undermine the credibility of the 2025 budget are avoided,” the statement read.

“The Minister for Finance must urgently revise the budget targets to reflect the true state of the economy.”

While the Minority sees the Fitch upgrade as an important endorsement of Ghana’s economic recovery, they maintain that prudent fiscal management and credible policy implementation will be crucial to sustaining the gains and restoring investor confidence.

Targeted marketing key to SME success – MTN Business Manager

0

Benedict Bentil, a Senior Manager at MTN Business, has urged small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana to adopt strategic and data-driven approaches to marketing in order to achieve sustainable growth.

Speaking on Week three of the Citi Business Festival On-Air Series, which focuses on marketing for SMEs, Mr. Bentil emphasised the need for businesses to move away from generic, one-size-fits-all marketing methods.

“When it comes to market segmentation, it is not a one-size-fits-all. It is not a ‘spray and pray’ approach,” he stated.

“Understand what your product does for people and the type of people who patronise your product.”

He noted that many SMEs in Ghana lack customer relationship management (CRM) systems, which are crucial for tracking customer demographics and behaviour.

Without this, he added, businesses often fail to align their marketing strategies with their actual customer base.

“If you understand that your customer base is between teenage to about 25 years old who are social media heavy, you wouldn’t be investing your marketing strategy in traditional media; you will invest in social media, because that is where they spend most of their time,” Mr. Bentil explained.

He stressed that understanding the customer base is key to business growth, adding that targeted marketing helps SMEs make informed decisions and maximise returns on their marketing investments.

Rapper, Medikal has debunked claims that he intentionally touched a UG student's buttocks Rapper, Medikal has debunked claims that he intentionally touched a UG student’s buttocks

Ghanaian rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, popularly known as Medikal, has responded to allegations that he inappropriately touched a female fan during a performance at the Evandy Hall Week celebrations.

Medikal came under heavy criticism after he was accused of deliberately touching the fan’s buttocks while hugging her on stage.

However, in response to the backlash, the “Omo Ada” hitmaker has firmly denied any intentional misconduct.

According to him, the narrative being circulated online is misleading and part of an agenda to damage his reputation.

“I was performing at Evandy and invited one of my fans on stage. I wanted us to dance, but she told me she had a boyfriend, so I respected that and let her go. While hugging her, I accidentally touched her buttocks. It wasn’t intentional, people are reading too much into it,” he explained.

Medikal also cautioned social media users against spreading false information, emphasising that he holds his fans, especially women, in high regard.

“To those guys who sit around spreading fake news about me, stop it. I won’t intentionally invite someone on stage and disrespect her like that.

“And to those calling it sexual harassment, stop that nonsense. I respect women, especially my fans. I don’t joke with my fans, so stop spreading the wrong narrative,” he said.

NPP’s First Vice Chairperson chairs NEC meeting as Ntim begins medical leave

The First Vice Chairperson of the New Patriotic Party, (NPP), Danquah Smith Buttey, chaired a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, in the absence of the party’s National Chairman, Stephen Ayensu Ntim, according to a report by citinewsroom.com

This development follows a formal letter from Stephen Ntim’s family to the NEC on June 16, 2025, requesting that he should be temporarily excused from official duties due to medical reasons.

According to the family, his continued involvement in party activities could further endanger his health and infringe on his rights.

The letter jointly signed by family members including Kingsley Oteng (Family Head), Adelaide Ntim (MP), and other close relatives, further reaffirmed Stephen Ntim’s decades of commitment to the party, from his time as First National Deputy Chairman to his current role as National Chairman.

“Common sense dictates that Stephen, as a matter of urgency, be temporarily excused, not only from rigorous active politics but from intra-party activities in order to make way for needed peace and solace and for concentration on the ongoing required medical treatment process,” part of the letter read.

Consequently, Buttey stepped in to chair the NEC session, which touched on the progress of the party’s Constitutional Review Committee.

TCDA issues mandatory directives to regulate palm oil imports in Ghana

Palm oil (R) importers have been advised to obtain permit before importation Palm oil (R) importers have been advised to obtain permit before importation

The Tree Crop Development Authority (TCDA) has issued a directive mandating all importers of Crude Palm Oil (CPO), Crude Palm Olein, and Palm Olein (refined vegetable oil) to register and obtain a permit from the authority before engaging in any importation activities.

This bold step aims to strengthen regulation and streamline operations within Ghana’s vital oil palm sector.

These directives, which take effect from July 14, 2025, are anchored in the Tree Crops Development Authority Act, 2019 (Act 1010), and the TCDA Legislative Instrument LI 2471.

This applies to all actors and entities operating within the oil palm value chain, from importers and processors to traders.

The oil palm industry plays a critical role in Ghana’s agricultural economy, providing employment for thousands of smallholder farmers and processors, and contributing significantly to the country’s agro-industrial ambitions.

However, the unregulated importation of palm oil products has posed challenges to local producers, including market distortion and quality control issues.

Kenya’s deputy police chief steps aside amid uproar over blogger’s death

Albert Ojwang's death in police custody about a week ago has caused outrage in Kenya Albert Ojwang’s death in police custody about a week ago has caused outrage in Kenya

Kenya’s deputy police chief Eliud Lagat has stepped aside pending the outcome of investigations into the death in detention of blogger Albert Ojwang.

Mr Lagat had been under pressure to resign from the opposition and human rights activists as Mr Ojwang was arrested after he filed a complaint, accusing the blogger of defaming him on social media.

Police initially said that Mr Ojwang died of self-inflicted wounds, but were forced to retract the statement after an autopsy found that he was likely to have died from assault wounds.

Mr Lagat denied any wrongdoing, but said in a statement that he was stepping aside in the “good and conscious thought” of his responsibilities as deputy police chief.

“I undertake to provide any support that may be required of me during the investigations of the unfortunate incident,” Mr Lagat said.

“I offer immense condolences to the family of Mr Albert Ojwang for their great loss,” he added.

Until the investigation is concluded, Mr Lagat will have no access to his office, and his duties will be performed by his deputy.

This comes amid intensifying pressure, with more demonstrations planned this week by activists demanding a transparent investigation into the 31-year-old blogger’s death.

Mr Ojwang was arrested in his village of Kakoth, near the western town of Homa Bay, on 7 June. He was then driven to the main police station in Nairobi, and was reported to have died a few days later.

Kenya’s President William Ruto spoke with Mr Ojiang’s father, Meshack Opiyo, following his son’s death, the local Daily Nation news site reports.

“He [Ruto] said: ‘I’m sorry,’ and we spoke at length. His words were sincere,” Mr Opiyo is quoted as saying.

Ruto promised to give the family two million Kenyan shillings ($15,500; £11,4000) to help cover funeral costs, while veteran opposition politician Raila Odinga, who also spoke to the family, pledged half the amount, the newspaper reports.

In an initial statement, police said Mr Ojwang was found unconscious in his cell and was rushed to a city hospital, where he succumbed to head injuries allegedly sustained from banging his head against the wall.

But an autopsy report and an investigation by the police watchdog, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), ruled out the possibility that Mr Ojwang might have killed himself.

While investigations continue, the head of the police station has been detained, along with another officer and a technician accused of disabling the station’s CCTV.

Police chief Douglas Kanja has apologised for the initial police claim that the blogger died of self-inflicted wounds, saying it was based on “misinformation” from his juniors.

Ruto has called for a swift investigation, and has promised that his government would “protect citizens from rogue police officers”.

Ruto first pledged to end Kenya’s history of police brutality and extrajudicial killings when he came to power in 2022.

But nearly 160 cases of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances were reported across Kenya last year, according to the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC).

At least 20 people have died while in police detention in the past four months alone, according to the IPOA.
