The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is confident that its demonstration against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo will yield positive results.
The suspension followed the establishment of a prima facie case after three separate petitions were filed calling for her removal.
However, the political parties involved have strongly condemned the decision, calling it a direct attack on the independence of the judiciary.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, declared that the protest scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2025, will shake the nation.
He reiterated the NPP’s concerns that the suspension undermines judicial independence and is a politically motivated move aimed at weakening the judiciary.
“NDC now wants to take their tendencies for dictatorship to a tyranny. This demonstration is going to shake Ghana. If not, we won’t back down until Ghanaians realise that they made a mistake with their vote in the 2024 election,” he stated.
Mr Ahiagbah noted that the demo will be led by the NPP Chairman, Stephen Ayesu Ntim, which is why he has taken a temporary break from the nationwide Thank You Tour.
The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), among others, are also expected to be in attendance.
The conveners have announced that the demonstration will begin at 7 am from a park opposite the Supreme Court, proceed through Parliament House, and end at the Jubilee House, where the petition will be submitted to President Mahama or a representative.

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana’s economic recovery is now underway, thanks to the leadership of the new management at the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of Matilda Asante-Asiedu as the Second Deputy Governor of the BoG on Friday, May 2, the President highlighted that the current administration inherited a weakened economy from the previous government. He credited the ongoing recovery to decisive actions and renewed leadership at the central bank.
Mahama encouraged the newly sworn-in deputy governor to remain focused and committed to the necessary reforms to stabilize the economy.
“I am pleased to note that under the leadership of Governor Dr. Johnson Asiamah and the bank’s senior management, the recovery process has begun in earnest. Inflation, while still high, is moderating. The Ghana Cedi has appreciated by 3.16% on the interbank market and by nearly 5% at the foreign bureau market,” he said.
“These gains are not accidental; they are the result of careful monetary tightening, which improves foreign exchange liquidity and a better synchronization of fiscal and monetary policy frameworks.”
The President concluded by welcoming Mrs. Matilda Asante-Asiedu to her new role, noting her distinguished career in banking, spanning corporate communication to financial inclusion.

The Black Satellites of Ghana take on DR Congo in their opening match of the 2025 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations today, Friday, 2 May 2025, at the New Suez Stadium in Egypt. Kick-off is set for 6:00 PM GMT.
This encounter marks Ghana’s 11th appearance in the competition, and with four titles already secured (1993, 1999, 2009, and 2021), the team enters the tournament with confidence and ambition to claim a fifth.
Ghana’s squad boasts an exciting blend of talent, with striker Jerry Afriyie leading the charge. The top scorer during the WAFU Zone B qualifiers, Afriyie will be central to Ghana’s attack as they aim for a strong start.
He is joined by Aziz Musibau, a lively forward whose sharp movement and eye for goal make him a constant threat. Musibau scored twice in the qualifiers and was named MVP in one of the matches.
In the middle of the park, Abdul Aziz Issah will be tasked with dictating play. Known for his vision and composure, Issah’s ability to control the game from midfield is expected to be crucial to Ghana’s tournament run.
DR Congo, meanwhile, are no pushovers, bringing physical strength and flair to the contest. But Ghana’s rich pedigree and form during qualification provide reason for optimism.
Victory in this match could set the tone for a successful campaign as Ghana chases another piece of continental glory.

UK-based Ghanaian Afro-Dancehall artiste Lloyd Twum-Ampofo, better known as Akata Stone, has released his debut single for 2025, ‘Money Na Water’.
Produced by Vicki Beats and mixed by Ray Beatz, the track opened with a hypnotic blend of traditional Ghanaian highlife guitar riffs intertwined with the hard-hitting bass and skanking hi-hats characteristic of dancehall.
Akata Stone’s signature husky vocals then cut through the mix, delivering a lyrical valence woven with street-smart observations and aspirational energy.
“Money Na Water,” as the title suggests, explores wealth’s fluid and sometimes fleeting nature. However, far from being a lament, the track is vibrating with an optimistic vibe.
Akata Stone sang about the hustle, the relentless pursuit of success, and the understanding that while money might flow like water, the drive to achieve it is what truly matters.
The production was slick and contemporary, a manifestation of Akata Stone’s growth as an artiste.
The chorus was instantly catchy, a melodic earworm that promised to dominate playlists and sound systems for months to come.
The song, which was released just a day ago, has been hailed as a strong contender for Afro-Dancehall track of the year, praising the celebrated Afro-dancehall artiste’s ability to consistently evolve his sound while staying true to his core artistic identity.
Samuel Atta Akyea is a former MP of Akim Abuakwa South
The lead counsel for Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, Samuel Atta Akyea, has described the Attorney General’s actions in fast-tracking his client to court without sufficient evidence as “a travesty of justice.”
Speaking to the media following the Accra High Court’s decision to remand his client into the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for seven days, Samuel Atta Akyea condemned the actions of the state prosecutor, accusing him of undermining his client’s rights and treating him as a subject of legal experimentation, rather than respecting his liberty.
He pointed out that the Attorney General had publicly stated during a press conference that his office would not rush to prosecute individuals without sufficient evidence, yet was now fast-tracking a case against his client without meeting that standard.
“He brought it to our attention. Let’s see what they bring. I don’t want to, I mean, eat a meal that is not cooked. I thought we should wait, and then what they said in the press was that we will never prosecute anybody unless we have all the evidence.
“You see, this cancels their initial position. They don’t have the evidence, but they rush the man to court and come and plead the court for more time. That’s a travesty of justice playing with the liberty of the individual and vain experimentation,” Atta Akyea said.
Atta Akyea, the former Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa South, further criticised the Attorney General for requesting additional time from the court to complete the preparation of witness statements.
He also disclosed that the Attorney General had informed him of a separate investigation involving his client, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, and noted that his legal team is awaiting details of this new development.
Meanwhile, Kwabena Adu Boahene has officially been charged with 11 counts of stealing, including the alleged transfer of GH¢49 million (approximately $7 million) from the bureau’s account to his personal account, among other offenses.
The suit, which was filed at the High Court in Accra, also had three other accused persons, including the wife of Adu-Boahene – Angela Adjei Boateng; his company, Advantage Solutions Limited; and a banker, Mildred Donkor.
The charges filed against the accused persons included: stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29); conspiracy to steal, contrary to Sections 23(1) and 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960; and defrauding by false pretences, contrary to Section 131(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Some of the other charges against them are: willfully causing financial loss to the state, contrary to Section 179A(3)(a) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29); using public office for profit, contrary to Section 179C(a) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29); and collaboration to commit a crime, to wit, using public office for profit, contrary to Section 179C(b) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

The event held which took place on Friday, May 2, 2025, was attended by members of the Bank of Ghana’s board, senior government officials, and other dignitaries.
Delivering remarks at the ceremony, President Mahama described the appointment as part of a broader national renewal strategy aimed at rebuilding institutions on the pillars of merit, competence, and public trust.
“This event is more than just a procedural formality. It reflects our collective resolve to restore professionalism, integrity and competence to one of our nation’s most important institutions. The Bank of Ghana is not just a regulator, it is a symbol of our economic sovereignty and a guardian of public confidence in our financial system,” he stated.

“These positive signs are the result of sound monetary policy and improved coordination with fiscal authorities,” he emphasised.
Matilda Asante-Asiedu brings to the role over two decades of experience in commercial banking, institutional reform, and strategic leadership.
Before her appointment, she served as the Director of Retail Banking at Access Bank Ghana, where she led the transformation of the bank’s retail division and championed initiatives in financial inclusion, digital banking, and SME development.
Under her leadership, Access Bank expanded its financial literacy programs, introduced customer-centric digital platforms, and deepened its outreach to underserved communities, efforts that aligned with broader national goals of economic inclusion and resilience.
Highlighting her credentials, President Mahama said, “She [Matilda Asante-Asiedu] brings a proven track record in stakeholder management and financial inclusion. Her appointment comes at a defining moment,” the President said.

He also reminded stakeholders that central banking must remain anchored in the real economy.
“The numbers are not just statistics, they represent livelihoods, aspirations, and the lived experiences of Ghanaians across the country.”
President Mahama in his concluding remarks expressed confidence in Matilda Asante-Asiedu’s ability to serve with distinction,
“May your tenure be marked by courage, humility, and excellence. We look forward to your contribution in building a stronger, more inclusive economy.”

Black Satellites head coach Desmond Ofei has opted to start without star forward Jerry Afriyie for their opening game of the 2025 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations against DR Congo.
Afriyie was Ghana’s top scorer during the WAFU Zone B qualifiers, so the decision comes as a surprise. His pace and eye for goal were expected to be central to Ghana’s attacking threat, but Ofei has instead gone with a front line featuring Emmanuel Mensah, Musibau Aziz, and Joseph Opoku.
Musibau, who scored twice and was named MVP in the qualifiers, will now carry the bulk of the attacking responsibility in Afriyie’s absence.
In midfield, Ishmael Addo, Abdul Sulemana, and Denis Marfo get the nod, with the trio tasked with controlling possession and linking up play.
The defence is anchored by captain Ofori McCarthy, who partners with Aaron Essel, Dacosta Antwi, and Andrews Adjabeng.
Gidios Aseako starts in goal.
This bold selection may be aimed at rotating the squad or keeping Afriyie fresh for later group-stage battles, but it certainly adds intrigue ahead of kick-off at the New Suez Stadium in Egypt.
The Black Satellites, four-time champions of the competition, will be hoping to get off to a winning start as they pursue a record-extending fifth U-20 AFCON title.

Speaking to GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie during the launch of the Black Star Experience on May 1, 2025, Rex Omar stated that the secretariat has been allocated $200 million for the construction of the state-of-the-art facility.
He emphasised that the project would be financed through funds provided by private investors.
“Most of the experiences would be driven by private capital. The government office would create an enabling environment that would work with the private sector. As we go along, you will see the major investment that would happen. For example, there is a private investment that is going to build a Hollywood-level film studio.
“Which is over $200 million on over 200 acres of land with its education component, and this was facilitated by the Black Star Experience secretariat. Very soon we would cut sod for that. The money is ready and everything is also ready. A lot of things like that are going to happen. That is a new beginning and a new dawn for Ghana,” he said.
He added that the current NDC government would provide funds to cushion veteran creatives during their old age.

President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday, May 1, launched the Black Star Experience as part of efforts to position Ghana as Africa’s premier destination for tourism.
The Black Star Experience is the government’s flagship culture, arts, and tourism brand to make Ghana a preferred tourism destination.
It is in fulfillment of President Mahama’s campaign promise to launch the initiative as part of the 120-Day Social Contract with Ghanaians.
The Blackstar Experience is a year-round celebration in all the major entertainment, artistic and educational disciplines.
Activities lined up for the celebration include The Pan African Month, Celebrating Heritage, History and Diaspora Engagement, The Ghana Film Festival and Awards Month, Ghana Music World, Culinary Month, Architecture, Design, Arts and Crafts, Fashion and Textiles Month and Literacy/Literary Month.

He said it was not merely the launch of a brand, but reclaiming the narrative and projecting to the world a bold new vision of Ghana that stands tall, vibrant, proud and unstoppable.
He said the launch of the Black Star Experience is a declaration that Ghana is the cultural and creative heartbeat of Africa.
“We’re determined to redefine how the world sees us and more importantly how we see ourselves,” he stated.
The President stated that Ghana must be recognised not only for its historic achievements, but also for its dynamic present and limitless future.
He said a powerful legacy had shaped the nation from the enduring kingdoms of Akwamun, Dagbon and Ashanti to the fearless pan-Africanist leadership of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, whose vision of African unity still inspires generations.
“And yet for too long we have under-invested in what makes Ghana truly exceptional. That is our culture, our creativity, our warmth and the way of life. And that must change,” he said.
President Mahama said the Black Star Experience was the government solemn pledge to rebrand Ghana and showcase to the world the brilliance of the country’s festivals, the rhythm of music, the beauty of fashion, the power of films, the richness of cuisine, the wisdom in storytelling and the unmatched warmth of the people.
Secondly, he said the launch would create jobs, empower millions of young Ghanaians, particularly women, by unlocking opportunities in the creative and tourism industries, nurturing entrepreneurship and innovation and creating sustainable livelihoods.
The President said the Blackstar Experience initiative would also draw in global investment and forge new pathways for inclusive growth and prosperity, thereby positioning Ghana as Africa’s premier destination for cultural tourism and creative collaboration.
“Let it be known that the Black Star Experience is not a one-off event. It is a 365-day celebration of Ghanaian ingenuity and excellence,” President Mahama said.
He said through the Blackstar Experience, the creative energy of the Ghanaian people would radiate daily from every region and every community.
“Imagine the majestic rhythms of the Hogbetsotso Festival in Anlo, the electrifying art of the Chale Wote Festival right here near the Black Star Square, the dazzling colours of Fetu Afahye in Cape Coast broadcast to global audiences, the Odwira Festivals of Akwapim and Ashanti, Aboakyer Festival of the people of Efutu, Homowo of the people of Ga, and the Bugum Festivals of the Dagbon people,” he said.
Adding that imagine Kente Weavers in Bonwire were celebrated as national treasures, Kumawood and Gallywood filmmakers, dazzling international screens, globetrotting studios across Accra to Takoradi.
“And let us be reminded of the words of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah. He says we face neither east nor west. In Ghana, we face forward,” he said.
“The Blackstar Experience is that forward that Nkrumah talked about. It is our pride. It is our legacy. It is our future. And let’s make it legendary.”
The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Ablah Dzifa Gomashie, said the Blackstar Experience was pivotally designed as a stimulus that moved the nation’s creative impulses and culture from the fringes to the center of national development.
The Presidential Staffer and Co-ordinator of the Blackstar Experience, Rex Omar, said the launch of the Blackstar Experience meant that they were going to rebrand Ghana to align with the world’s 20 most successful countries in tourism.
“Together we can unlock the full potential of Ghana’s creative economy. As we launch the Black Star Experience, I urge every Ghanaian, young and old, to embrace this vision.”

Following this report, a number of the appointees of Mahama who were implicated in the report have called out The Fourth Estate, stating that they had filed their asset declaration forms contrary to the report.
Below is a list of these appointees who have called out the media house:
1. Brogya Genfi:
The Deputy Minister of Defence, Brogya Genfi, has threatened to take legal action against the Fourth Estate.
He said that the publication by The Fourth Estate is completely false and has tarnished his reputation.
“Dear The Fourth Estate, you have made a false publication about me in your story on assets declaration by appointees of President John Dramani Mahama. For the avoidance of doubt, I filed my assets declaration with the Auditor General on March 28, 2025, at 4 p.m., and I have the official receipt to that effect.
“Your false publication has lowered my image in the minds of right-thinking persons. You should know what to do within 24 hours! Failing which, I would seek legal advice,” he wrote on Facebook.
The post had a copy of the said receipt, which indeed showed that the deputy minister had declared these assets with the Auditor General before the deadline.
2. John Dumelo:
The Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, who was also cited in the report, has also debunked the claim that he has not filed his asset declaration.
In a post shared on X on April 30, 2025, Dumelo said that he submitted his asset declaration form long ago.
The deputy minister wrote, “I did a long time ago. You can crosscheck.”

The Director of Presidential Initiatives in Agriculture and Agribusiness, Dr Peter Boamah Otukunor, who was also cited in the report, has also debunked the claim that he has not filed his asset declaration.
In a post shared on Facebook on April 30, 2025, Dr Otukunor said that he had fully declared his assets, contrary to the details in The Fourth Estate report.
“I have fully declared my assets in compliance with the provisions of Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution,” the director wrote.
4. Adam Bonaa:
Dr Adam Bonaa, the Acting Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, who was cited in the report, has also refuted it.
He said that he had declared his assets contrary to The Fourth Estate report.
He added that the media house did a bad job.
Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb, Dr Bonaa said that he submitted his asset declaration form five days before the deadline.
He stressed that after he submitted the form, he was given a receipt, which he has since shared with GhanaWeb.
The receipt, which was dated March 25, 2025, showed that he had declared his assets.

President Mahama and Dr Alhassan Iddrisu, Government Statistician
President John Dramani Mahama has officially sworn in Dr Alhassan Iddrisu as the new Government Statistician, tasking him with the critical responsibility of placing credible data and evidence at the center of Ghana’s national transformation agenda.
The brief ceremony, held at the Jubilee House in Accra on May 2, 2025, was attended by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Ministers for Interior, Health, Defence, Communications, and Justice, as well as other distinguished guests.
In his acceptance remarks, Dr Iddrisu expressed profound gratitude to President Mahama for the trust reposed in him, pledging to treat the role not merely as a position, but as a sacred national duty.
“This is a call to lead the charge in placing data and evidence at the heart of governance and national transformation,” Dr Iddrisu stated.
“In a rapidly changing world where information drives prosperity, the role of the Ghana Statistical Service has never been more crucial.”
Dr Iddrisu outlined a bold vision for the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), committing to build a modern, technology-driven, agile, and trusted institution capable of producing credible, timely, and relevant data to support Ghana’s macroeconomic stabilisation and socio-economic development initiatives.
Among his top priorities is the fast-tracking of the rebasing of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to improve the accuracy of inflation data.
He also aims to extend CPI reporting to the district level in support of the government’s decentralisation agenda and provide inflation data on a rural-urban basis to capture regional price dynamics.
In terms of economic data, Dr Iddrisu announced plans to rebase Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) every five years, an improvement over the current ten-year cycle, and to begin producing regional GDP figures to inform local policymaking.
He also revealed plans to introduce Monthly Indicators of Economic Growth (MIEG) to complement the Bank of Ghana’s Composite Index of Economic Activity (CIEA).
On employment statistics, Dr Iddrisu emphasised the importance of regularly producing quarterly employment and unemployment data.
This, he said, will enable better tracking of labor market trends, the impact of government flagship programs, and youth unemployment.
“With the enduring support of the President, the Honourable Finance Minister, our development partners, and the good people of Ghana, I am committed to working with the exceptional team at GSS to position our Service as a world-class institution and a trusted pillar in Ghana’s development journey,” Dr Iddrisu affirmed.
Dr Alhassan Iddrisu, a seasoned economist and statistician, brings to the role extensive experience in macroeconomic management, public policy, and data analysis.
His appointment marks a new chapter for the Ghana Statistical Service as it seeks to become a beacon of excellence and a driver of national development through evidence-based decision-making.
Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has paid a personal visit to Ernest Nuamah in France as the Olympique Lyon forward begins his recovery from a serious knee injury that has ended his season.
Nuamah, 20, sustained a devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in Lyon’s Ligue 1 clash with Lille on 5 April 2025, forcing him off just minutes into the game after a collision with Gabriel Gudmundsson.
Scans later confirmed the extent of the damage, and the player underwent successful surgery soon after.
With the recovery process now underway, Addo took time to check on the young winger, offering encouragement and assessing his physical and mental progress. The visit is part of Addo’s continued efforts to maintain strong relationships with his players.
Sources close to the Ghanaian camp say Addo’s presence was deeply appreciated by Nuamah, who is now focused on rehabilitation and staying mentally strong.
The Ghana Football Association has also pledged its full support, promising to stand by the player throughout his recovery.
Nuamah had been in solid form before the injury, registering six goal contributions in Ligue 1 and the UEFA Europa League.
He is among the Ghanaian internationals to suffer an ACL injury this season, following similar setbacks to Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, Alidu Seidu, and Abdul Mumin.
The Oxford Crown Court in the UK is today expected to pass its sentence against Ugandan Judge Lydia Mugambe, having been found guilty of modern slavery, a couple of months ago. The offence of modern slavery in the UK carries up to a maximum punishment of life imprisonment. Justice Mugambe, 50, a High Court judge who was at the time pursuing her PhD in law at Oxford University, UK, allegedly lured a Ugandan girl into the UK and forced her to work as an unpaid domestic maid and nanny.
On March 13, this year, the court found Justice Mugambe guilty of conspiring to facilitate the commission of a breach of UK immigration laws, facilitating travel with a view to exploitation, forcing someone to work, and conspiracy to intimidate a witness. The court went on and reserved the passing of the sentence until today. The prosecutors said Justice Mugambe took “advantage of her status” over her victim in the “most egregious way” by steady employment and forcing her to work as her maid and provide childcare for free.
This was after the Thames Valley police launched their inquiry on February 10, 2023, after receiving a report that the victim was being held as a slave at Justice Mugambe’s Oxfordshire address. “A protracted and complex investigation involving several partners then ensued, during which Thames Valley police established that Mugambe had obtained a visa for the victim to work in the UK,” the force’s website stated. They added: “However, the terms of this visa were that the victim would be paid to work for the then Deputy High Commissioner at the Ugandan Embassy in London, John Mugerwa. Mugambe paid for the victim’s plane ticket to the UK, picked her up from the airport, and thereafter the victim became Mugambe’s slave, carrying out unpaid work as a domestic maid and nanny.”
Prosecutors allege that Mugerwa, who, at the time, enjoyed diplomatic immunity, sponsored the visa in exchange for legal assistance from Mugambe on a separate case in Uganda. The government did not waive his immunity, and no charges have been brought against him. Close family sources have insisted that the judge is a victim of a scheme by a Ugandan woman whom she helped to travel to the UK, but instead joined bad groups who misadvised her on what strategies she could use to quickly get asylum there. It’s believed that when the woman in question reached the UK, her peers advised her to report to the police that she was being held by the judge against her will, that is when the police swung in and had the judge charged.
Bilateral deals
The sentencing of Justice Mugambe comes barely three weeks after Justice Minister Norbert Mao, on behalf of Uganda, signed bilateral statutory instruments with the United Kingdom, China, Turkey, and South Korea to transfer convicted prisoners between the countries, Monitor confirms. “In exercise of the powers conferred on the minister responsible for justice by the Transfer of Convicted Offenders Act, this Instrument is made this day of April 13,” the document reads. The pacts allow Ugandan nationals jailed in partner countries to serve the remainder of their sentences at home and permit foreign nationals convicted in Uganda to be repatriated. Legal analysts said the signing of the pacts would facilitate Justice Mugambe’s return to Uganda, from where she will serve her sentence and probably get a presidential pardon before she serves her entire sentence.
Investigation
“A protracted and complex investigation involving several partners then ensued [after receiving a report that a victim of modern slevery was being held at Justice Mugambe’s Oxfordshire address], during which Thames Valley police established that Mugambe had obtained a visa for the victim to work in the UK,” the Thames Valley police website in UK states.
Kumawood actor Bill Asamoah has issued a strong warning to his fans and the general public about fraudulent activities being carried out in his name on social media.
The actor took to his platforms to caution followers not to fall for fake promotions or charity schemes falsely linked to him.
According to him, neither he nor his team is running any such initiatives, and all such claims are scams.
He revealed that scammers are luring unsuspecting individuals with promises of movie roles and event participation, demanding as much as GH₵2,000 for inclusion.
He urged anyone approached by these fraudsters to report the matter to the nearest police station immediately.
Bill Asamoah further warned that anyone using his name to exploit others will face the full rigour of the law.
The National Organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has launched a fierce criticism of President John Mahama, accusing him of abandoning democratic ideals and ruling in an increasingly authoritarian manner.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, the party official revealed that the NPP, in collaboration with four other political parties, is preparing a large-scale protest to challenge recent actions taken by the President, which they describe as authoritarian and unconstitutional.
“We, the four other political parties, are resolute, we are united, and we are going to protest. This is supposed to be mammoth,” he declared, calling on supporters and Ghanaians at large to join in sending what he termed “the loudest signal” to the President.
“Mr Mahama, we didn’t sell Ghana to you. It was not auctioned to you,” he said pointedly.
“In fact, we are surprised how, all of a sudden, a democratically elected leader — a constitutionally elected leader who received overwhelming endorsement — suddenly turns out to be a constitutional dictator and a tyrant,” he noted.
The NPP Organiser further accused the President of abandoning his campaign promises, citing the recent nomination of seven individuals to undisclosed roles as evidence of backpedalling on earlier commitments.
“He is being unprincipled, and I’m alarmed,” he said.
He expressed concern that the President’s latest actions signal a retreat from the principles and commitments he made to Ghanaians during the election period.
“Just with the nominations of seven persons, it looks like everything he sees is backtracking from all the promises he made,” he concluded.

Farouk Aliu Mahama with some of the PWDs and widows in Yendi
Former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Yendi Constituency, Farouk Aliu Mahama, hosted a feast at his residence to celebrate his 44th birthday with members of the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) community and several widows from the Yendi municipality.
The former Yendi MP also donated bags of rice and cash to the widows and PWDs, to support their well-being.
“Persons with disabilities and widows are vital members of our society who deserve love, care, and support from the entire community. We must all embrace them,” the former Yendi MP stated.
He took the opportunity to tour the Yendi Constituency to express his gratitude to voters for the trust they placed in him during the 2024 parliamentary elections, despite not emerging victorious.
“I want to thank you all for everything during the election, regardless of the outcome. Let’s stay united and work tirelessly for the development of Yendi,” he added.
Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has praised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for improving its public image, calling the party a “sellable” and “marketable” brand.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr Afenyo-Markin said in Ghana, voters care more about political party identity than individual candidates.
Secretary-General of Ghana Federation of Labour, Abraham Koomson
The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has expressed disappointment over its marginalisation at the 2025 May Day parade held in Accra.
In a statement cited by GhanaWeb Business, the Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, Abraham Koomson, stated that the speech delivered by the Secretary-General and the National Chairman of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) failed to reflect the collective concerns of all critical stakeholders within the organised labour front, particularly the Ghana Federation of Labour.
“As a key player in the labour movement, GFL’s input and concerns were conspicuously absent from the address, a situation we find deeply offensive and unacceptable,” part of the statement read.
“To prevent further erosion of trust and foster genuine unity among labour stakeholders, we demand an urgent meeting of the interim Organised Labour Leadership before the end of May 2025. This meeting must address the status of the stalled Organised Labour structures and chart a way forward for inclusive, transparent, and principled collaboration,” it added.
Other concerns raised was the remarks on the removal of the Chief Justice and illegal mining, otherwise known as galamsey.
Presidential Staffer Shamima Muslim has urged government appointees to rise to the occasion and support President John Dramani Mahama in creating a lasting legacy for Ghana.
Speaking on Woezor TV and monitored by GhanaWeb on Friday, April 2, 2025, she emphasized that the government is on a mission to reset the country.
“I wish that all appointees will not disappoint the President. He has assured us that this is a legacy mandate, and he means business. There is no time for mistakes, certainly not unjustifiable ones. There is no room for greed. There is no space for corruption.
“So, all appointees must understand that we stand on the brink of a new era in our history. Many Ghanaians have said that this is, indeed, Ghana’s second independence. How we handle this mandate is largely up to us,” she stated.
Shamima Muslim added that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) should not be discouraged by the actions of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), who she said are still struggling to recover from their defeat in the 2024 general elections.
“We will not be distracted by the opposition, who are still reeling from the massive defeat. It is simply my hope that all appointees will not let the President down.”

Ghana narrowly missed matching its 2023 crude oil production levels, recording a marginal shortfall of just 0.01%, equivalent to 7,000 barrels. By the end of 2024, total crude oil output stood at 48,240,010 barrels, slightly below the 48,247,037 barrels produced in 2023.
The 2024 figure marks the closest Ghana has come to reversing the downward trend in annual oil production since 2019.
PIAC releases 14th Annual Report on Petroleum revenue use
This information was revealed in the 2024 Annual Report on the Use and Management of Petroleum Revenue, published by the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC). The report—PIAC’s 14th annual and 27th statutory submission—was officially launched on Tuesday, 29 April 2025.
Presenting highlights of the report, PIAC Chairman Mr Constantine Kudzedzi disclosed that the Jubilee Field contributed the largest share of production, accounting for 66% of Ghana’s total output. The Sankofa Gye-Nyame (SGN) and Tweneboa-Enyenra-Ntomme (TEN) fields accounted for 20% and 14% respectively.
PIAC expressed concerns about the continued decline in production from the TEN Field, describing the field’s output as the lowest among the three producing sites. The committee urged the government to undertake both technical and cost audits to determine the root causes of the declining performance.
“The TEN Field turned out the lowest production among the three producing fields, with substantially high production and development cost trends raising concerns about the viability of the field,” the report noted.
Ghana Group contributes $89.44 Million in oil lifting
The report further indicated that the Ghana Group contributed approximately $89.44 million in petroleum revenue through a total lifting of $73.91 million in 2024. This performance reflects ongoing challenges in optimising returns from Ghana’s petroleum sector amid rising operational costs.
Despite efforts by the Ministry of Energy to court new investors into the upstream petroleum sector, the report revealed that no new petroleum agreements were signed in 2024. This marks the sixth year in a row without fresh exploration or production contracts.
President John Dramani Mahama has called for national statistics and data disseminated by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) to remain factual, credible, and free from manipulation.
He issued the directive during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Government Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, held at the Jubilee House on Friday, May 2.
The President highlighted the role accurate data plays in development and decision-making, stressing that the integrity of national data must be protected at all costs.
He further urged the new Statistician to resist any pressure that could compromise the objectivity of the service’s output.
Mahama urged the new statistician to speak truth to power even when the data is uncomfortable.
“Statistical integrity is not a luxury. It’s a necessity. Citizens must believe that the numbers published by the service are objective and factual and are free from political interference.
“Investors must be assured that Ghana’s macroeconomic data is credible. Development partners must know that our results framework are measurable and verifiable.
He added, “I urge the new statistician to lead with courage and impartiality, to speak truth to power even when the data is uncomfortable. Work closely with stakeholders, ministries, academia, civil society organizations, and the private sector to strengthen the culture of data use across government.
“Under this administration, we’re building a governance model anchored in transparency, performance, and accountability. From health, education, and agriculture to urban planning, we need timely and disaggregated data to guide implementation, to measure results and correct our course when necessary.”
In his remarks, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu stated that the Ghana Statistical Service would adopt technology-driven approaches to meet data needs and enhance efficiency.
“We are committed to delivering credible, timely, and relevant data to support our macroeconomic stabilization programme and our socioeconomic development agenda, including flagship initiatives we’ve introduced such as the 24-hour economic policy, the agriculture for transformation agenda, the Adwumawura programme, the national apprenticeship programme, the national coders programme, and the anti-corruption drive as we just emphasized. Beyond this, we will actively anticipate and respond to the emerging data needs of a dynamic economy and ambitious, forward-looking people,” he said.
He added that the service would fast-track the release of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data and introduce GDP estimates at the regional level to better inform localised development strategies.
“Currently, inflation ends at the regional level. This will support the decentralisation agenda of the government and will inform inflation policy at the district level. And three, on prices, we’ll produce a CPI and inflation data on rural rural-urban basis to get a better appreciation of inflation from the rural-urban perspective.
“Your Excellency, on economic activities, we will, one, fast-track the rebasing of GDP data to make our GDP statistics more accurate and relevant. We will call for institutionalisation of rebasing of our GDP every five years to make our GDP data more relevant and to meet global standards,” he stated.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, has refuted rumours suggesting that the central bank has been flooding the foreign exchange market with large sums of US dollars to keep the cedi afloat.
Despite the local currency’s current streak of stability—one of the longest in recent years and its recent slight appreciation against the dollar, Dr. Asiama insists there’s no secret intervention driving this trend.
In a conversation with George Wiafe on the business edition of PM Express, he credited the cedi’s performance
MP for Gomoa Central, A Plus has been reportedly removed from the Majority Caucus page
The Host of Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom-Otchere, has alleged that the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has been removed from a WhatsApp platform meant for members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament.
Reacting to a question by a viewer during the Thursday, May 1, 2025, edition of his show, Adom-Otchere said his checks indicate the independent Member of Parliament has been removed from the social media group meant for Majority MPs.
“Yes, that’s correct. We checked, and A Plus has been removed. It’s very true,” he stated.
The reported removal comes on the back of a recent feud between the Attorney General, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, and the MP.
During a press conference on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, Dr Dominic Ayine responded to claims made by A Plus, who had accused him of corruption in an earlier social media post.
A Plus alleged on Facebook that Dr Ayine manipulated the drafting and passage of the Sanitation and Pollution Levy in 2021 for personal gain while in opposition.
He further claimed that Dr Ayine also restructured the leadership of a parliamentary committee to benefit a close associate.
However, Dr Ayine vehemently denied the accusations, describing them as baseless and challenging A Plus to provide evidence.
An Accra High Court has remanded Mr. Kwabena Adu-Boahene, former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, into custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
This is to enable the Attorney-General to complete investigations and file witness statements.
Boahene’s wife and other accused persons remain on their existing bail terms.
The accused face 11 charges, including stealing, money laundering of GH¢49.1 million in state funds, willfully causing financial loss to the State, conspiracy, collaboration to commit a crime, and abuse of public office.
They pleaded not guilty.
The court presided over by Judge John Eugene Nyadu Nyante issued the orders after an in-camera hearing on Adu-Boahene’s bail.
At the previous hearing, Mr. Samuel Atta Akyea, counsel for the accused, sought to maintain existing bail terms, but the Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, opposed.
The AG sought bail revocation, alleging Adu-Boahene had interfered with potential witnesses.
The judge said the AG’s submission warranted an in-camera hearing for arguments on the bail issue.
Having considered submissions, he ruled that Adu-Boahene’s liberty must be weighed against the State’s interest in obtaining witness statements.
“It is for this reason that I order Mr. Adu-Boahene to be kept in EOCO custody for seven working days,” he said.
Other accused persons include Mildred Donkor, a former banker, and Advantage Solutions Limited.
The case has been adjourned to May 13 for further directions.
American-Senegalese musician, Akon, has claimed that he played a foundational role in the rise of Afrobeats.
In an interview with American talk show host and actress Sherri Shepherd, Akon discussed his career and his impact on the early development of the Afrobeats genre.
According to him, much of the Afrobeats wave that has swept the world today can be traced back to the groundwork he laid in Nigeria over a decade ago.
“I was in Africa and time just flew past. 2008 was my last official album, which was the Freedom album. And then I produced the music for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. From there, I went to Nigeria. What we created in Nigeria was what you see and hear now as Afrobeats,” he said.
Akon, who rose to fame in the early 2000s with hits like Locked Up, Lonely, and Smack That, said his team’s early collaborations with Nigerian artistes helped define the modern sound of Afrobeats.
He specifically mentioned signing Wizkid in 2008 and working closely with Banky W.
Akon mentioned that he played a role in the development of some artistes, including D’banj and P-Square, among several others.
“Wizkid was the first Nigerian artiste that we signed back in 2008. We went to work with him and Banky W in Nigeria. From there, we just started developing artistes like PSquare, D’banj, and others,” Akon explained.
The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has urged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region to prioritise proper sanitation management.
He emphasised that his administration will not tolerate any laxity that could lead to another cholera outbreak, similar to the one experienced in 2024.
Nelson stressed the importance of effective collaboration between his administration and the assemblies to implement measures that prevent disease outbreaks.
He urged the chief executives to take immediate action to address sanitation issues in their areas.
He further highlighted the need for sustained efforts to maintain good sanitation practices and prevent health crises in the region.
He tasked Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to prioritise waste management, sanitation, and hygiene in their areas.
“Let’s have a plan to see how we can manage the sanitation situation in the region without recording outbreak,” he said.
Speaking at his maiden meeting with the MMDCEs, Joseph Nelson emphasised the need for decisive actions to prevent disease outbreaks.
“President John Dramani Mahama was concerned about the cholera outbreak in the region, and during his visit to the region, he asked me about the situation. We shouldn’t allow this to happen,” he indicated.
In a metrotvonline.com report, he directed the MMDCEs to desilt clogged gutters and implement measures to tackle sanitation challenges.
The minister also stressed that sanitation should be a top priority for the assemblies, linking it to improved healthcare and citizen well-being.

play videoGovernment urged to start issuing local bonds
The Chief Executive Officer of Dalex Finance, Joe Jackson, has urged the government to return to the secondary market and begin issuing local bonds.
According to him, it is time to reduce the reliance on treasury bills, as they were never intended to serve as a permanent government financing tool.
He explained that the government’s inability to borrow from the secondary market stemmed from the recent debt crisis, one he believes the country is beginning to emerge from.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Business and Financial Times–Ecobank “The Money Summit,” he said, “First of all, T-bills were only meant to be a temporary way of financing a cash flow deficiency in the government’s finances. T-bills were never meant to be the method for raising funds for development or other long-term purposes.
“So, relying on the T-bill market is misusing them. When we fell into our crisis in 2022 and 2023, we became essentially so toxic that we couldn’t access the foreign markets. And due to the DDEP, we couldn’t issue local bonds either. That happened, but now, we have to move on,” he added.
The Money Summit was held under the theme: “Optimising Investment and Pensions Management: Strategies for Sustainable Retirement Income and Economic Growth.”
Jackson also commended the government’s efforts to maintain fiscal discipline and rationalise expenditure.
He acknowledged that while the country is not completely out of the crisis, the government deserves credit for its current direction.
“There’s a new regime. So far, this new regime has shown admirable commitment to keeping interest rates low and reducing expenditure. Because of that commitment and these factors, I believe it’s time to reintroduce medium-term bonds and start rebuilding trust that the storm may be passing,” he stated.
The finance expert cautioned, however, that while progress is being made, continued vigilance is necessary.
“We are not out of the woods yet. We can’t afford to give the government our blind trust. The events of the past three years have shown that no investment is risk-free, not even in government instruments.
“So yes, we can return to investing in local government bonds, but we must do so with our eyes open—watching inflation, monitoring the government’s commitment to reducing expenditure, and observing efforts to keep the cedi stable. If the government stays on this path, there is no reason we shouldn’t begin investing in local bonds again,” Jackson concluded.
Officials from the sports ministry and some keep-fit clubs
The Chief Director at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, William Kartey, has said that the government is committed to injecting funds into physical exercises for citizens to stay healthy.
According to him, the ministry’s name was changed to include ‘recreation’ in order to ensure that the government prioritises recreational sports, physical exercises, and the entire sports ecosystem.
Speaking at the ‘May Day SWEAT Fest’ physical exercises event held at the Dansoman Karikari AstroTurf on May 1, 2025, Kartey thanked the organisers of the event and promised government support.
“The executive instrument that changed the name from Youth and Sports to Sports and Recreation is meant to direct more focus on the sports ecosystem as a whole. Not just professional sports, but also to promote recreational activities for the well-being of citizens, as well as a means of developing grassroots sports to improve social cohesion and stimulate local economic development. Participation in sports and physical activities provides direct benefits in tackling lifestyle diseases, thus reducing healthcare costs.
“One important objective of the redesignation of the ministry is to position Ghana to be able to tap into the multi-billion-dollar global sports economy. With a current estimated value of $700 billion, which is expected to grow to $1 trillion, as we exercise and perform physical activities and engage in various sporting activities, we are assured that the government is committed to creating an environment that supports healthy lifestyles,” he said.
The President of Functional Fitness League Ghana, Charles Owusu Ansah, indicated that his outfit looks forward to bringing on board keep-fit clubs and gyms to extend exercise across the nation.
“It’s about promoting a healthy lifestyle nationwide among Ghanaians. Currently in Ghana, non-communicable diseases are taking over the population. We believe that when the right system is put in place, which includes exercise and proper nutrition, and when we educate people from the grassroots and they understand the concept of exercise, some of these diseases will not affect our bodies.
“This campaign is launched to go around and educate the masses about the need for and importance of exercise and the benefits they will derive from it. What we did today was at the community level. We will pick another day to do the regional level, and then we will start going national,” he added.
The ‘May Day SWEAT Fest event’, which was bankrolled by High Protein Recovery, saw numerous individuals gather to exercise their bodies and enhance their health status.

A makeshift bunker was dug by civilians in the North Darfur state capital, el-Fasher, as a hideout
Fighting in the Sudanese city of al-Nahud, a strategic city in West Kordofan state acting as a gateway to the Darfur region, has killed 19 people and left 37 wounded, according to sources who spoke to Al Jazeera, in the latest eruption of violence in the brutal two-year civil war.
Local sources told Al Jazeera that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which declared on Telegram that it had “liberated” al-Nahud from the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on Thursday, had rampaged through neighbourhoods, looting the market, houses and cars.
Al Jazeera understands that a doctor, a journalist and a police officer were among those killed as paramilitaries overcame the city, held by the SAF since the start of the conflict that has left tens of thousands dead and uprooted more than 12 million.
Control over al-Nahud has become a priority for both the RSF and SAF as fighting between the pair intensifies in Darfur, where 542 people have been killed in the past three weeks alone, according to the United Nations on Thursday.
The RSF has been doubling down on Darfur in recent weeks after losing the national capital, Khartoum, last month, in a bid to seize regional capital el-Fasher, the last major population centre still in the army’s hands, located 400 kilometres (250 miles) west of al-Nahud.
Recent violence in el-Fasher and the nearby refugee camps of Zamzam and Abu Shouk has caused hundreds of thousands of people to flee 60km (37 miles) across the desert to the town of Tawila.
As it continues its campaign in Darfur, the paramilitary group has also been inching closer to Khartoum again, shelling the presidential palace in its second attack on the capital in less than a week.
On Saturday, the RSF bombarded the army’s General Command headquarters in Khartoum.
Volker Turk, the UN high commissioner for human rights, commenting on the death toll in Darfur and extrajudicial executions conducted by both sides in Khartoum state, said on Thursday that the “horror unfolding in Sudan knows no bounds”.
The conflict between SAF, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF’s Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo has divided Sudan in two, with the army holding sway in the north and east, while the RSF controls most of Darfur and parts of the south.

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has strongly denied accusations that it is facilitating illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.
The denial follows remarks by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who suggested that the institution was established to support unlawful gold mining operations.
Responding in an interview with Citi News, GoldBod’s Media Relations Officer, Prince Minkah, dismissed the claims, stressing that the Board’s mission is to promote legal small-scale mining and to curb the involvement of foreign nationals in the sector.
“If anyone is thinking that GoldBod exist because we want to harness or enhance the work of illegal miners, the person must sit again and rewrite their notes. Because that is not the objectives and functions of GoldBod,” he explained.
He added that one of GoldBod’s long-term goals is to contribute to the stability of the Ghana cedi by enhancing gold export revenues.
“We will not be distracted by naysayers, we are focused on ensuring that our objectives are achieved,” he said.
