Now, attention has turned to Dr. Tanko Computer, the recently appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC).

He would’ve been out if theatrics could save him – NPP MP blasts critics of Wontumi’s lawyer

Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Opoku Ansah Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Opoku Ansah

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Opoku Ansah, has lashed out at critics of the legal counsel for the embattled NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alias Wontumi, over his client’s continued detention.

According to the MP, Wontumi would have been released from custody long ago if political theatrics were sufficient, and there is a need to allow his legal counsel to work on securing his client’s bail.

“If politics with theatrics could save the chairman, he would be out. Instead, allow the lawyers to do their work,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

His comment comes in response to criticism directed at Andy Appiah-Kubi over the failure to secure Wontumi’s release following his recent arrest.

In an interview on Friday, May 30, 2025, lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi told JoyNews that all necessary documentation for the two sureties has been completed, with significant assistance from former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

“We have been able to provide the sureties; that, I can assure you, and I’m very grateful to Honourable Bryan Acheampong, who has supported me in filing the documents,” Appiah-Kubi said.

He added, “He has brought his documents, which go over and above the value of money required. So, I thank you very much.”

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail on Tuesday, May 27, requiring GH₵50 million with two justified sureties, following his arrest by EOCO on suspicions of fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes. Until Friday, his team had secured only one surety.

However, Appiah-Kubi revealed that, despite meeting the bail conditions, Wontumi’s release is stalled due to a fresh legal application filed earlier in the day.

“My client is not going home tonight. We encountered a challenge that needs to be addressed before we can move forward,” he explained.

“Unknown to me, there was an application to frustrate what we are doing, so we will deal with it on Monday. It is an application that was not filed by myself, but it prohibits us,” Appiah-Kubi noted.

He disclosed that EOCO officers were prepared to inspect the properties listed by the sureties, but the pending court application legally prevents them from proceeding until the issue is resolved.

“They had agreed to do the inspection tonight, so all the officers are there, but the challenge I faced is legal. We can’t do it,” he said.

Offset requests spousal support from estranged wife Cardi B

Cardi B and her estranged husband, Offset Cardi B and her estranged husband, Offset

Offset and Cardi B’s divorce proceedings have taken another turn as the Bad and Boujee rapper is seeking spousal support from his estranged wife.

Per TMZ, Offset, whose real name is Kiari Kendrell Cephus, requested the spousal support from Cardi, 32, in an amended divorce he filed earlier this month. Offset in the filing, however, did not include the exact amount he is seeking.

The other requests largely remain the same, and they include Offset, 33, maintaining his stance on having joint custody of their three children and asking for the kid’s minors’ primary residence to be Cardi’s abode.

Prior to this recent update, there had been no report regarding the estranged couple’s divorce proceedings for a while. As previously reported by Face2Face Africa, Cardi, born Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar, filed for divorce from Offset in 2024. The pair became romantically involved in 2017 before they got engaged and married secretly that same year.

A source told The Associated Press that Cardi’s divorce filing was “not based on any one particular incident” as it had “been a long time coming and is amicable.” Sources also told TMZ that the pair had been “disconnected from each other” for a very long while.

After filing for divorce, the I Like It rapper initially clapped back at critics who suggested Offset wasn’t in their kids’ lives and he was a deadbeat dad. But their relationship later turned sour as they have traded jabs on social media.

Cardi filed her first divorce in September 2020 over allegations of Offset cheating on her. The couple later patched things up and called off their divorce. It, however, appears there’s no chance of a reconciliation this time around.

In a March 29 conversation on X Spaces, Cardi accused Offset of threatening her and leaking a video of them having sex after she sent Melanie Jayda (Offset’s rumored girlfriend) messages she had received from her estranged husband, E! News reported

“This guy upset because I sent his girlfriend messages of him begging me—begging me saying he’s gonna take away his life, begging me saying he’s gonna take away my life,” Cardi claimed at the time. “All that s–t, he was mad.”

She added: “This man sent text messages to somebody that I was dealing with of me and him having sex. That’s the type of s–t I’ve been dealing with.”

Ablakwa dismisses ‘Jobs for the Boys’ claims amidst Washington DC embassy reforms

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has strongly denied claims of politically motivated hiring at Ghana’s Washington DC embassy, asserting that ongoing reforms are not about creating “jobs for the boys.”

This statement comes in the wake of an alleged fraud scheme involving local staff, including Fred Kwarteng, which led to a temporary closure of the embassy.

Ablakwa took to his X account on May 30, 2025, to address public speculation, assuring that no new personnel have been brought in to replace staff impacted by the investigation.

He underscored the ministry’s existing capacity, stating, they have an adequate stock of distinguished and astute diplomats to lead ongoing reforms.

Ablakwa emphasised that the comprehensive “reset agenda,” aimed at enhancing the reputation of Ghana’s diplomatic missions, is a serious and necessary endeavour.

He firmly rejected any attempts to mischaracterise it as a patronage exercise.

The embassy, which had been closed since May 26, 2025, in connection with the probe, resumed operations on May 29, 2025.

Read post by the foreign minister below

From the briefing I have received, our reopened embassy in Washington DC issued over 800 visas yesterday on the first day of resumption.

I expect this level of efficiency, professionalism and integrity to continue. Let me commend our fresh team of seasoned diplomats for the great job so far in implementing our systems overhaul and institutional fumigation.

This is testament that Ghanaian diplomats excel when provided with the right ecosystem and leadership.

Contrary to false and baseless claims, there have been no new recruitments to replace lost jobs in our Washington embassy, we have an adequate stock of distinguished and astute diplomats to lead ongoing reforms, this patriotic consequential reset agenda aimed at restoring the image of our diplomatic missions abroad cannot be reduced to “jobs for the boys.”

Meanwhile, it is worth announcing that a recently discovered 2023 unauthorized, opaque and illegal agreement between Fred Kwarteng and a top official at the Washington Embassy has been declared a nullity.

It will no longer be respected (more on this plus frozen accounts and other remedial actions will be presented in greater detail when I address Parliament next week).

Exporters incurring losses due to cedi appreciation

The chamber called for urgent government intervention to avoid further disruptions The chamber called for urgent government intervention to avoid further disruptions

The Canada-Ghana Chamber of Commerce has expressed deep concern over the recent sharp appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi, warning that the rapid rise in the local currency’s value is severely affecting exporters and could have wide-ranging implications for Ghana’s trade and investment environment.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com on May 30, 2025, Chamber President Linda Vasnani revealed that several member exporters are experiencing significant financial losses due to the cedi’s unexpected strengthening.

“Many of our exporters are incurring losses because they are unable to adjust quickly to the cedi’s appreciation. It’s creating a real challenge for businesses, especially those that earn revenue in foreign currency but must meet rising local costs,” she explained.

Vasnani called for urgent government intervention, stressing the need to stabilise the exchange rate to avoid further disruption to export-oriented businesses.

“We’re appealing to the government to take the necessary steps to stabilise the cedi. While a stronger currency can have its benefits, the speed at which the cedi is appreciating has caught many businesses off guard, making export planning and operations difficult,” she said.

The cedi’s recent gains against major currencies such as the U.S. dollar have sparked debate among economists and industry stakeholders.

While the currency’s strength may help ease inflation and benefit importers, it is increasingly becoming a burden for exporters, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises now grappling with reduced profit margins and volatile revenue flows.

Currently, the dollar is buying at GH₵10.27 and selling at GH₵10.29.

Macaulay Culkin, famously known for his role as Kevin McCallister in the Home Alone series, was once the most recognizable child star in Hollywood. His adorable face, quick wit, and clever traps made him a global sensation in the 1990s. But after his peak as a child actor, Culkin took a step back from the spotlight, leading many fans to wonder what happened to him.

Now in his early 40s, Macaulay Culkin looks very different from the boy fans remember. Over the years, he’s gone through both physical changes and personal evolution. In the early 2010s, fans were concerned by his thin appearance and rumors of health and substance issues. However, Culkin later clarified that he was simply living a quiet life out of the public eye and wasn’t struggling the way tabloids had claimed.

Today, Culkin appears much healthier and more grounded. He has returned to acting selectively and has been involved in various projects, including appearances in American Horror Story and launching a comedy website called Bunny Ears. He’s also in a long-term relationship with actress Brenda Song, and the couple welcomed their first child in 2021.

In recent years, there has been a surge in the popularity of African hairstyles globally, with many people embracing the unique and intricate designs that African braiders and stylists have to offer. This trend is not limited to Africans alone, as people from different cultures and backgrounds are now embracing African hairstyles as a form of self-expression and cultural appreciation.

One of the most popular African hairstyles is braids. Braiding is an ancient art form that has been passed down through generations of African women. It is a time-consuming and intricate process that requires great skill and patience. Braids can be styled in various ways, from simple and subtle designs to complex and elaborate patterns. They can be worn for both formal and informal occasions and can be styled in various ways, from updos to ponytails.

African hairstyles are not just a form of self-expression, but also a way of connecting with one’s cultural heritage. Many African hairstyles have historical and cultural significance, and they are often used to signify status, age, marital status, and cultural identity. For example, in some African cultures, braids are used to signify marital status, while in others, they are used to signify spiritual or cultural identity.

The significance of African hairstyles goes beyond aesthetics. They are a symbol of cultural pride, identity, and resilience. Despite the impact of colonization and globalization, African hairstyles have continued to thrive, and they remain an important part of African culture and identity.

Wontumi case: We’ve followed due process; critics blowing matters out of proportion – EOCO

0

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has defended its handling of the arrest and detention of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

According to the EOCO’s Ashanti Regional Director, Edward Cudjoe, critics are exaggerating the situation and that the agency has adhered to legal procedures in granting bail.

“I think that the institution has followed the laid down processes, and if you hear from the commentary, his legal representatives are telling you that due process has been followed. It’s only those who are on the other side who don’t know what is happening and are making noise,” he said.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested earlier this week and granted bail of GH¢50 million with two sureties, both to be justified.

His lawyers have secured one surety but have yet to meet the second condition, resulting in his continued custody.

The bail amount has been criticised by various political figures, including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who described it as unrealistic.

Dr. Bawumia stated that few individuals in Ghana possess properties worth GH¢50 million to satisfy such bail conditions.

The situation has sparked protests from NPP supporters and members of Parliament. The Minority caucus staged a walkout from Parliament and marched to EOCO’s headquarters, demanding Wontumi’s release.

They argue that the bail conditions are excessive and politically motivated.

Despite the protests, EOCO maintains that the bail conditions are appropriate given the severity of the allegations against Wontumi, which include fraud, money laundering, and involvement in international organized crime.

The agency asserts that any concerns regarding bail conditions should be addressed through the courts, not public demonstrations.

As of now, Chairman Wontumi remains in custody pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions. His legal team has indicated plans to seek a variation of the bail terms through the judicial system.

GH₵50m bail just to prevent Wontumi’s release – Bawumia

0

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed concerns over the GH₵50 million bail condition for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The 2024 NPP Presidential Candidate has said the condition is a deliberate move to block Chairman Wontumi’s release.

Dr. Bawumia raised these concerns while addressing journalists on Friday after meeting National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) officials, where scores of party supporters had gathered.

“I must put on record that the bail conditions that have been set for Chairman Wontumi’s bail, 50 million Ghana cedis, is very onerous. I don’t know how many people in Ghana can have property worth 50 million Ghana cedis. I believe that this was just set to prevent his timely release,” he bemoaned.

However, Dr Bawumia urged NPP supporters to remain calm, assuring all legal avenues will be pursued to facilitate his bail.

“We are going to follow the due process, the legal process, to make sure that he is released as soon as possible,” he assured.

Meanwhile, he revealed that his efforts to visit Wontumi at the NIB headquarters was unsuccessful due to security concerns.

Renaming and Politicization of Public Universities; a Worrying Development

0

In the last few years, we have seen a trend of incumbent administrations renaming some public universities after political figures. While some people continue to support this worrying trend for political reasons, I abhor it. I will explain why.

First off, in the Ghanaian cultural setting, names do not only convey a sense of physical identity, they also give spiritual importance. For universities, names are highly significant because they carry institutional visions, shape reputation and stimulate alumni pride. It is for these reasons that the incessant trend of renaming public universities after political figures must be shunned.

Under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration, several public universities were renamed.
Prominent among them were :

1. The University of Development Studies, Wa, which was renamed Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies

2. University of Mines and Technology, renamed George Grant University of Mines and Technology.

3. University of Education, Kumasi Campus renamed Akenten Appiah Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development.

In opposition, the NDC vowed to revert all universities renamed by Akufo-Addo back to their original names. In sharp contrast, I am learning that the Ministry of Education, under the leadership of the venerable Haruna Idrissu, has renamed the University of Health and Allied Sciences ( UHAS) after the late President Mills.

Do not get me wrong. President Mills was a great statesman, and his contribution towards the establishment of UHAS cannot be underestimated.

In spite of this fact, it’s chuckling seeing the very people/ party who vilified Akufo for renaming some public universities after pro-NPP figures perpetuate what they once considered a peccatum or sin.

I am not against the idea of naming a newly built university after a political figure, especially when the figure is widely appreciated for his heroics. My issue is with renaming existing universities after political/partisan figures. In Ghana, a good number of our politicians are not nationalistic but partisan, and sometimes they make policy decisions to reflect their partisan orientation.

You do not need a soothsayer to tell you that most of the agitation that followed the renaming of UMAT and UDS, Wa, after SD Dombo and George Grant, respectively, were made from a place of extreme partisanship. Some people felt that these closely highlighted individuals are Pro NPP/ UP/ UGCC figures and that by renaming the aforementioned universities, President Akufo-Addo was blatantly honouring the memory of figures associated with his political tradition.

Today, UHAS has been renamed after the late Prof Mills, and people from the opposing divide have started waging spirited opposition to the decision by the Ministry of Education. Just as the NDC has promised to revert institutions renamed by Akufo-Addo to their original names, I wouldn’t be surprised if a future NPP administration decides to strike out Prof Mills’ name and revert to UHAS or even name the university after a pro-NPP figure. Then, this vicious cycle continues.

What saddens my heart is that, in situations where the names of these longstanding universities are renamed after political figures, the government of the day does not build consensus with relevant stakeholders and seldom gives plausible reasons or justifications for the renaming.

Like me, many students, alumni bodies and CSOs are yet to grasp the identities designated to these public universities, whose names have been altered.

While renaming public universities may give some level of esteem to political/partisan figures, it undermines institutional stability and may shrink public trust. The truth is, universities are global institutions that are regionally impactful and globally relevant, and for that reason, their names should not be treated like panties, which can be changed anytime one wishes.

Whether it is George Grant University of Mines and Technology, Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, Wa, or Professor John Evans Attah Mills University of Health and Allied Health, the ambit remains the same. The renaming of these public universities appears to only give partisan capital, consequently affecting the universities’ strategic positioning, branding and reputation.

If our political class have forgotten, then they must be reminded that renaming public universities after political figures comes with a huge financial burden. In situations where a public university is renamed, changes are made to the institution’s signage, website letterheads, and relevant documents. All of these rebranding and strategic positioning come at a huge cost.

At a time when the government of Ghana’s funding towards tertiary education is stagnant, must money go into renaming at the expense of augmenting infrastructure and resourcing students?

Our political class must understand that their penchant for renaming public universities after their political figures can even confuse international partners and universities. A university that constantly changes its name may not be taken seriously in the community of universities.

We must also not lose sight of the fact that this renaming of public universities has the propensity of creating confusion in the minds of alumni and current students who want to study abroad. For instance, a person who graduated from UHAS and intends to apply to study abroad this year may battle with the difficulty of identifying as a former UHAS student or Prof John Evans Atta Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences.

Additionally, if a final-year student at UHAS has already applied to study abroad by submitting a UHAS-inscribed transcript and is given a Prof JEA Mills UHAS certificate upon graduation, that might lead to some discrepancies in the application process. If the foreign university does not ask for an attestation to clear up doubts, that could affect the student’s chances.

This is the opportune time for this country to have a policy that regulates when and how universities can be renamed.
This must encompass the participation of university administrators, alumni, students, governing councils and other relevant stakeholders in the Ghanaian educational ecosystem.

In conclusion, this troubling trend of renaming state universities after political figures must cease. If indeed the political class want to honour their political figures, they can exploit other areas , such as setting up scholarship schemes in their name, building halls, and auditoriums and naming them after the political figures.

I do not think anyone would have made a fuss if Akufo-Addo built an auditorium at UMAT and named it after George Grant, or if Mahama had built a block at UHAS and named it after Prof Mills.

May God bless our homeland, Ghana, and make our political class think beyond partisanship.

I was paying GH¢15k a day

Actor Kwadwo Nkansah popularly known as Lilwin Actor Kwadwo Nkansah popularly known as Lilwin

Imagine shelling out GH¢15,000 a day to rent a filming location for a story you deeply believe in—only to be kicked out halfway through.

That’s the frustrating reality actor and filmmaker Lilwin is facing with his latest passion project: a biopic on Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the young revolutionary leader of Burkina Faso.

For Lilwin, this wasn’t just another movie. It was a tribute to a modern African icon who has captured hearts across the continent with his bold leadership, strong anti-colonial stance, and fierce defense of his country’s sovereignty.

“People see him as the new Sankara,” Lilwin said in a past interview. “His courage and leadership are inspiring, especially for the youth. That’s why I wanted to tell his story.”

Everything was on track—until a group of about ten young men on motorbikes stormed the set and demanded that filming be stopped. When Lilwin’s team tried to reason with them, things quickly escalated.

“They damaged our equipment and caused chaos,” he recalled. “The place was rented—it was someone’s property, and we were paying GHC15,000 every day to use it.”

That’s when things took another hit. The landlord, understandably shaken by the incident, asked Lilwin to vacate the premises.

“He didn’t want any trouble, so we had no choice but to leave,” Lilwin said.

It’s a massive setback—not just financially, but emotionally too. Lilwin had reached the climax of the film and was just steps away from completing what he hoped would be an inspiring piece of cinema celebrating African pride and leadership.

Still, he’s not giving up. With most of the key scenes already shot, Lilwin says he’ll find a way to release the film and honour Captain Traoré’s legacy.

We’re disappointed we couldn’t see Wontumi – Bawumia

0

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Friday, May 30, was disappointed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership was unable to meet detained Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, secured access to Chairman Wontumi after he was National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters.

Addressing journalists, Dr. Bawumia confirmed that arrangements had been made to visit the embattled Chairman, who has been in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) since his arrest on Tuesday.

“We are very disappointed in our inability to see him because we made prior arrangements. We’ve expressed our disappointment and will continue engaging to ensure we can see him,” he stated.

However, NIB officials explained that the meeting could not take place because of the large crowd gathered outside the facility.

“Our Chairman, Wontumi, was arrested and has been held in custody by EOCO. We wanted to see him and find out how he is doing.

“Unfortunately, we are here, but the NIB feels that the crowd is such that they are not able to bring him here at the moment, and they have to make proper arrangements to bring him so that we can see him,” he stated.

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail by EOCO to the tune of GH¢50 million with two sureties, both to be justified.

As of Friday, only one surety had been secured, leaving him in custody. His continued detention has sparked widespread protests among NPP supporters and party officials.

Scores of NPP supporters thronged the headquarters of the NIB in Accra following reports about his transfer from EOCO, demanding his release.

Several Members of Parliament and senior party officials were also present to seek access to the premises.

Improve service quality by December or face heavy fines

0

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has issued ultimatum to Ghana’s mobile network operators, warning them to significantly improve the quality of their services by December 31, 2025, or face severe financial penalties — a portion of which will directly compensate affected customers.

The warning came during a high-level meeting held on Friday, May 30, 2025, with the chief executive officers and technical teams of the country’s major telecom providers — MTN, Telecel, and AT. The minister criticised the persistent poor service experienced by subscribers, particularly in expanding urban centres and key regional towns, despite significant infrastructure investments.

“We are not doing sentiments. We are doing engineering,” Sam George said, adding “If you have infrastructure in place but your service is poor, we must begin to take regulatory action.”

The meeting also featured a presentation by the National Communications Authority (NCA) based on a performance assessment in 48 localities across the country. The study, triggered by rising public complaints, measured four key performance indicators: 3G Coverage, Call Setup Time (CST), Mean Opinion Score (MOS) for call quality, and 3G Data Throughput. The findings highlighted worrying inconsistencies in network performance across all three operators.

Sam George, who is also the MP for Ningo-Prampram, cited problematic areas such as Amasaman and East Legon, where service quality has dropped despite wider network coverage. He noted that parts of Accra are experiencing network “blackouts” and substandard 4G performance.

A nationwide service quality test, covering all district capitals, is expected to be conducted by the NCA in the third quarter of 2025. Based on its findings, the government will take “decisive action” if no significant improvements are seen.

In a major policy shift, the minister announced that 40% of any fines imposed on non-compliant telecom companies will go directly to affected customers, likely through data or call-time bonuses.

In the short term, operators have until June 30, 2025, to complete the acceptance process for newly allocated spectrum. They are expected to begin deploying this spectrum immediately, with visible improvements in service by the end of December.

“We know you can’t complete upgrades in three months, but we must see that the process has begun. The Ghanaian people must feel the impact of the spectrum rollout by the end of this year,” Sam George said.

In response, telecom executives laid out their strategies to address service quality concerns:

  • MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett revealed that the company had invested $230 million in 2024 to strengthen its network and IT systems. Plans include launching 300 new franchise outlets, hiring 400 new staff, and rolling out secure self-service tools for SIM swaps and PIN resets.

  • Telecel Ghana COO Mohamad Ghaddar emphasised continuous network optimisation and customer service improvements. The company has over 400 retail shops and plans to add 100 more. Ghaddar also reaffirmed support for customers with special needs and welcomed regulatory engagement.

  • AT CEO Leo Skarlatos said significant network upgrades are underway and should be “clearly visible” by the first quarter of 2026. He invited stakeholders to witness the improvements early next year.

Beyond service delivery, the Minister also addressed the issue of data pricing. He recalled the formation of a committee in February 2025 tasked with crafting a strategy for gradual reductions in data costs. The focus, he explained, would be on offering more value to consumers rather than immediate price drops, in order to protect market stability and ongoing infrastructure investments.

The minister’s directive marks a bold new phase of regulatory oversight, aimed at ensuring that telcos deliver reliable, high-quality services that meet the demands of Ghana’s growing digital economy.

Liverpool sign Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen for £29.5m

0

Liverpool have completed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for 35m euros (£29.5m) on a five-year deal.

Just hours after the Anfield club confirmed Trent Alexander-Arnold would be joining Real Madrid in time to play in the Club World Cup, the Premier League champions have ratified their move for Dutch international Frimpong after activating the 24-year-old’s release clause.

Versatile right-footer Frimpong is widely viewed as Alexander-Arnold’s replacement in Arne Slot’s squad.

He played an integral role in helping Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title in 2023-24 and made 53 appearances in all competitions as they finished second in 24-25.

Frimpong will have competition at right-back from Northern Ireland defender Conor Bradley, who recently signed a new four-year contract with the club.

The Dutchman came through the youth ranks at Manchester City and went on to join Celtic in September 2019 before a move to Leverkusen in January 2021.

Frimpong joins a Dutch contingent of Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch at Liverpool.

Liverpool are also in talks with Leverkusen over signing Florian Wirtz.

The club have entered into advanced negotiations for Germany forward Wirtz, submitting an offer of around £109m inclusive of add-ons.

Wirtz, 22, is a key target for Liverpool and there is now a sense that discussions over a deal are in its final stages, with a growing hope an agreement is within reach.

Wontumi’s lawyers secure second surety for GH₵50m bail

0

Lawyers for the embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, say they have successfully met the bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), but a new legal complication is preventing his release.

According to lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi, all the necessary documentation for the two sureties has been completed, with significant support from the former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

“We have been able to provide the sureties, that one, I can assure you, and I’m very grateful to Honourable Bryan Acheampong, who has supported me to file the documents,” Mr Appiah-Kubi told JoyNews’ Michael Ashaley exclusively on Friday, May 30.

“He has brought his documents, which go over and above the value of money that is required. So I thank you very much.”

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail on Tuesday, May 27, to the tune of GH₵50 million with two sureties, both to be justified, after he was arrested by EOCO on suspicion of involvement in fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes.

Until today, his legal team had only been able to secure one surety.

Mr Appiah-Kubi, however, confirmed that despite having met all bail conditions, his client will not be going home yet due to a fresh legal application filed earlier in the day.

He noted that the legal team is working swiftly to resolve the new court matter and expressed hope that the issue could be cleared by Monday, which would pave the way for Chairman Wontumi’s release.

“My client is not going home tonight. We encountered a challenge that needs to be addressed before we can go forward,” he said.

“Unknown to me, there was an application to frustrate what we are doing, so we will deal with it on Monday. It is an application that was not filed by my good self, but that prohibits us.”

The lawyer disclosed that although EOCO officers were ready to proceed with the inspection of the properties listed by the sureties, the pending court application legally restrains them from moving forward until the matter is resolved.

“They had agreed to do the inspection tonight, so all the officers are there, but the challenge that I faced is legal. We can’t do it,” he explained.

He also clarified confusion over the whereabouts of Chairman Wontumi, contradicting earlier claims by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who had indicated they were unaware of his location.

Touching on his client’s health, the lawyer dismissed rumours of a hunger strike and assured the public that Wontumi was receiving medical care.

“We had brought him to meet with the former Vice President, but the situation we saw was difficult—to arrange this meeting, to pass through the crowd, to get the Vice President to see him and talk to him. So we had to take him back,” he recounted.

“I told you that his condition of health requires attention. So he’s receiving attention and there’s nothing to worry about in respect of his health.”

Mr Appiah-Kubi is optimistic that once the court matter is resolved, Chairman Wontumi will be released by Monday, June 2.

10. Lautaro Martínez (Inter)

The Argentine striker has scored 25 goals and made eight assists, helping Inter reach another Champions League final. Despite a recent injury scare, he returned to play a key role in their European success, keeping alive hopes of adding to his trophy collection.

9. Robert Lewandowski (Barcelona)

Reunited with former Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick, the 36-year-old Polish striker has rolled back the years. His 44 goals and five assists helped Barcelona win La Liga, Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España. After missing the 2024 shortlist, Lewandowski has proven he’s still one of Europe’s deadliest strikers.

8. Harry Kane (Bayern Munich)

The England captain has finally won his first trophy. Kane’s 43 goals and 13 assists fired Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title, ending years of disappointment. At 31, he’s shown his goalscoring instincts remain sharp, though Bayern’s Champions League quarter-final defeat to Inter was disappointing.

7. Pedri (Barcelona)

While his six goals and nine assists don’t look spectacular on paper, anyone who watched Barcelona this season will tell you how brilliant Pedri has been. Finally staying injury-free, the Spanish midfielder has shown why he was so highly rated as a teenager. Many now consider him the world’s best midfielder, particularly after his outstanding performance in the Copa del Rey final.

6. Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid)

Mbappé’s first season at Real Madrid hasn’t gone as planned, despite scoring 43 goals. After a slow start, he seemed to find his feet with a stunning hat-trick against Manchester City in February. However, Madrid’s season fell apart in the final weeks – they lost their Champions League crown to Arsenal, were beaten by Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final, and lost the La Liga title. Despite winning the European Golden Shoe, Mbappé will have to wait longer for his dream Ballon d’Or.

5. Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

The Egyptian King looked certain to win the award for most of the season after leading Liverpool to the Premier League title under new manager Arne Slot. His 36 goals and 24 assists helped the Reds win the league at a canter, and he’s finally signed a new two-year contract to end speculation about his future. However, Liverpool’s shock last-16 Champions League exit and his poor showing in the Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle have damaged his chances significantly.

4. Gianluigi Donnarumma (Paris Saint-Germain)

It’s been 62 years since a goalkeeper won the Ballon d’Or, but Donnarumma has made a strong case this season. The Italian has been PSG’s hero in the Champions League knockout stages, saving penalties at Liverpool and making crucial stops against Aston Villa when they threatened a remarkable comeback from four goals down. His performances against Arsenal were equally impressive, and if PSG complete a treble, he’ll deserve significant credit.

3. Raphinha (Barcelona)

The Brazilian winger has been Barcelona’s most decisive player in their electric front three. His numbers speak for themselves – 39 goals and 25 assists across all competitions. Raphinha was nearly sold last summer when Barca tried to sign Nico Williams, but he’s responded by leading the club to a domestic treble. The former Leeds United player is enjoying the best form of his career at exactly the right time.

2. Lamine Yamal (Barcelona)

At just 17, Yamal is already being tipped to break records. No player has won the Ballon d’Or before turning 21, but the Barcelona teenager might just manage it in the coming years. This season, he’s contributed 19 goals and 26 assists while helping Barca win La Liga, Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España. Many believe he’s been Spain’s most impressive attacking player, and his Champions League performances against Inter were absolutely brilliant. He represents the future of football.

1. Ousmane Dembélé (Paris Saint-Germain)

After years of frustrating fans despite his obvious talent, Dembélé has finally lived up to his potential at PSG. The French winger has scored 35 goals and made 13 assists, helping his side dominate French football with wins in Ligue 1, Coupe de France and Trophée des Champions.

More importantly, he’s been crucial in PSG’s remarkable Champions League run, scoring vital goals against Liverpool and Arsenal as they chase their first European Cup. Under Luis Enrique, PSG now look like Europe’s best team, with Dembélé leading the charge.

NPP’s Director of Finance and Administration condemns Chairman Wontumi’s detention

0

NPP Director of Finance and Administration of the New Patriotic Party, William Yamoah NPP Director of Finance and Administration of the New Patriotic Party, William Yamoah

The Director of Finance and Administration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), William Yamoah has condemned what he describes as the unlawful detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman.

In a statement on Friday, May 30, 2025, Yamoah characterised the arrest as part of a longstanding pattern of persecution by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against members of the NPP, particularly in the Ashanti Region, which he says has consistently stood firm for democratic values, freedom, and political participation.

“The arbitrary and politically motivated detention of Chairman Wontumi is not just an attack on one man; it is an attack on the entire Ashanti people,” Yamoah declared.

“It is a chilling echo of the NDC’s historic mistreatment of Ashantis, a pattern that dates back decades.”

He recounted past instances of alleged abuse, including electoral violence in 1992, economic sabotage in 1996, and marginalization during the NDC’s return to power in 2008.

According to Yamoah, successive NDC governments have systematically attempted to suppress NPP supporters.

“Communities were brutalized, businesses were targeted, and state institutions were weaponized to silence our people. And now, in 2025, the script is disturbingly familiar,” he said.

Yamoah questioned the legality and transparency surrounding Chairman Wontumi’s detention and called it a “flagrant abuse of power” intended to stifle political momentum in a region that has historically resisted NDC dominance.

He further appealed to civil society, religious leaders, traditional authorities, and international observers to speak out against what he termed political intimidation.

“We respectfully call on His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to come to the rescue of his people,” Yamoah said.

The detention of Chairman Wontumi has sparked outrage within NPP circles, with party leaders warning that it could escalate political tensions nationwide.

Former President Akufo-Addo’s Humble Public Appearance Sparks Reactions and Praise from Ghanaians

0

Accra – Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has once again found himself at the center of public attention — not for a policy speech or political rally — but for a simple, unscripted moment that melted hearts and got social media buzzing.

In a recent public appearance at what appeared to be a modest community gathering, the ex-president was spotted sitting on a regular plastic chair among the crowd — a strikingly humble departure from the grandeur and formal settings Ghanaians have come to associate with high-ranking political figures. Dressed casually and flashing his trademark smile, Akufo-Addo shared laughter and light-hearted conversations with attendees.

But what truly stole the spotlight was a heartfelt compliment from a Ghanaian woman in the crowd. “Addo showboy!” she exclaimed, her voice filled with admiration and excitement. “He still looks strong and dignified. We thank God for his life.”

The interaction was caught on camera and swiftly made its way onto various social media platforms, with users hailing the former president’s down-to-earth demeanor and unassuming presence. A short clip showing Akufo-Addo chuckling warmly at the praise — visibly humbled but clearly enjoying the moment — went viral.

“Today, he is sitting on an ordinary chair. Interesting life,” one Twitter user noted, referencing the contrast between his time in office and his present simplicity. Others were quick to point out how rare and refreshing it is to see former leaders blending so easily into ordinary public life.

“This is how it should be — former presidents living as citizens, not gods. I respect him for showing up and not demanding any special treatment,” wrote a Facebook commenter.

Political observers and supporters praised the former president for staying connected with the people even after leaving office. “He has always been a man of the people,” said NPP supporter Sandra Osei. “Leadership is not about sitting on golden chairs; it’s about humility and service.”

While Akufo-Addo’s presidency was marked by both praise and controversy, moments like these offer a glimpse into the personal side of a leader many see as having given his all during a challenging era for Ghana. His visible ease in public, without the usual presidential fanfare, is being interpreted by many as a sign of maturity, peace, and confidence in his legacy.

The phrase “Addo Showboy” is now trending, with memes, commentaries, and even short songs emerging online. Whether you agree with his politics or not, it’s clear: Akufo-Addo still knows how to command attention — with humility, charm, and just the right dose of humor.

Former President Kufuor Drops Revelation

0

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has publicly supported the suggestion to mark July 1st as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving in Ghana. This proposal was made by President John Dramani Mahama, who believes the day should be set aside to thank God for how far He has brought the nation.

Speaking in agreement with the idea on Friday, 30th May, 2025, Mr. Kufuor said that if President Mahama believes it is a good idea, then he also agrees. According to him, July 1 should be a day for all Ghanaians to come together to thank God for His blessings and the peace Ghana continues to enjoy.

“If President Mahama thought it right, then I agree with him. We look forward to 1st July, and we will celebrate it as a day to thank the Almighty who made Ghana what it is,” Mr. Kufuor said.

The call for a national day of prayer has received praise from many religious and political leaders who see it as an opportunity for the country to unite in gratitude and ask for continued peace, stability, and development.

July 1st was previously celebrated as Republic Day in Ghana. However, in recent years, it has not been marked as a public holiday. With this new proposal, it may once again become a day of national importance—this time focusing on prayer and thanksgiving rather than political history alone.

Many Ghanaians have also welcomed the idea on social media, saying the country needs more moments of unity and reflection.

As plans are being considered, it is expected that religious groups, civil society, and political leaders will come together to support and organize events across the country on July 1st.

IET-Ghana president calls for trainee allowances for engineering students

0

President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana, Engr. Henry Kwadwo Boateng President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana, Engr. Henry Kwadwo Boateng

The President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH), Engr. Henry Kwadwo Boateng, has urged the government to extend trainee allowances to engineering students, highlighting their exclusion from the recently reinstated allowance programs for nurses and teachers.

Speaking at an induction ceremony for new engineering professionals in Kumasi, Engr. Boateng emphasized the critical role of engineers in Ghana’s development and the need for equitable support.

The restoration of trainee allowances for nursing students, announced by President John Dramani Mahama, has been widely welcomed in the healthcare sector.

However, Engr. Boateng questioned why engineering students, who are vital to building Ghana’s infrastructure, are not receiving similar support.

“Today, Ghana’s biggest shortage is not only in healthcare or teaching—it’s in engineering, technology, and skilled trades,” he stated, noting that these fields are essential for constructing roads, power plants, factories, and digital infrastructure.

Engr. Boateng pointed out that engineering students at technical universities, polytechnics, and vocational institutes face significant challenges due to the lack of trainee allowances or formal encouragement.

He highlighted the consequences of this gap, stating, “Many skilled technicians and artisans working on Ghanaian projects come from neighboring countries—not because Ghanaians lack talent or interest, but because they are not given the resources and motivation they deserve.”

In a heartfelt appeal, Engr. Boateng called on President Mahama and policymakers to include engineering students, technologists, and technicians in the trainee allowance program.

“If Ghana truly wants to become industrialized and self-reliant, we must extend these allowances. This isn’t just about money—it’s about valuing those who will build Ghana’s future,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of empowering future engineers to achieve a “Ghana Beyond Aid,” a vision of a self-reliant nation driven by homegrown expertise and innovation.

Addressing the newly inducted engineers, Engr. Boateng encouraged them to see themselves as more than just professionals.

“You are innovators and leaders who will shape the future of the nation. Your responsibility goes beyond building structures; it includes advocating for the engineering community and influencing policies that matter,” he said.

Wontumi denied access to family – Lawyer confirms [Video]

0

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is currently being denied access to his family while in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), his lawyer has confirmed.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse today, Wontumi’s lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi stated, “That is true,” when asked about accusations from the NPP Ashanti Regional Chapter that EOCO was preventing his family from seeing him.

Mr Appiah-Kubi explained that, even as his legal representative, he must “apply for the application to be approved” and “be led by an official” to gain access to his client.

He added that Wontumi’s phones have been confiscated, making it impossible for him to communicate with anyone independently.

The lawyer views this restriction as a “violation” of his client’s rights.

His legal team indicated that they would consider seeking further redress for the denial of family access at an “appropriate time”, with their immediate focus on securing his release.

Chairman Wontumi is receiving medical attention at a clinic while in EOCO’s custody, and his lawyer confirmed he “has been unwell and is still unwell.”

However, the lawyer denied knowledge of any hunger strike, stating he had dinner with Wontumi just two days prior.

The legal team has met the GHS 50 million bail conditions imposed by EOCO, which require two justified sureties, but they have to wait until Monday to ascertain the fate of the outspoken regional chairman, as EOCO has filed another suit in court.

Wontumi’s legal representatives have already filed an application in court seeking a variation of the bail conditions, which they describe as “most difficult and worse and most unfair”.

The lawyer highlighted that while EOCO has the mandate to arrest, the “mode” of Wontumi’s apprehension, being “accosted in the middle of the road and arrested” without prior direct invitation, is a primary concern.

Chairman Wontumi was initially invited by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for allegedly mining without a license and polluting a river in the Western Region.

He has denied all these allegations. His current detention by EOCO focuses on separate allegations of “causing financial loss to the state”.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Wontumi is reportedly “not too happy with the situation” but has expressed his willingness to cooperate with any legitimate invitations from security agencies.

Tema West MCE pledges swift reclamation of Klagon Ramsar Site

0

The Tema West Municipal Chief Executive, Ludwig Teye Totimeh, has announced plans to urgently restore degraded Ramsar sites and other wetlands within the municipality.

He made this known during a demolition exercise in Klagon, on Friday, May 30, undertaken as part of the Mahama government’s ongoing flood prevention efforts.

“We have put in place a task force that will be monitoring and seeing to it that these structures don’t come up again. Now we will have to reclaim the land and restore it to its original use,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Director-General for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ahmed-Rufai Afarahim, underscored the urgency of protecting the Ramsar site, warning that unchecked encroachment poses a significant threat to the entire Greater Accra Region.

According to him, the wetlands serve a crucial role in flood control and water management.

“If you look at this site, all the water coming from the motorway and Ashaiman flows here before it gradually enters the sea. Most of the fence walls we brought down still have water in them. We need to reserve the place because of the rate at which people are putting up structures; we are afraid that moving forward, if we are to maintain these structures, the whole of Accra will submerge,” he said.

The Management of Maaha Beach Resort has stated that it is committed to the safety of guests, following a fire incident which resulted in one of its 25 structures razed to the ground on Wednesday, May 28 at 8:00pm.

In a statement signed by the General Manager, Sylvia Osei-Mensah, it mentioned that a public statement has become necessary following false publications and distortions by some bloggers on social media and other media outlets about the fire incident causing fear and panic among the public.

It mentioned that the fire started from a nearby resort and rapidly spread due to the close proximity to their premises. (Related article: Fire destroys facilities at Maaha Beach, Vision Beach resorts )

“Despite swift intervention by emergency services and our internal safety team, our block next to the wall was affected by the flames. However, with about 180 rooms available currently, operations remain unaffected.

We are grateful to report that there were no casualties or injuries, and all guests and staff were evacuated safely and efficiently. We extend our deepest appreciation to the emergency responders and community members who assisted in containing the fire and ensuring the safety of everyone involved,” part of the press release reads.

It continued, “While this is a challenging time for us, we remain strong and focused on rebuilding, and remain committed to serving our guests safely as possible. The safety and well-being of our guests, staff, and community remain our utmost priority.

“Management wishes to place on record that Maaha Beach Resort is in business and appeals to its customers to continue to patronize their services”.

He would’ve been out if theatrics could save him – NPP MP blasts critics of Wontumi’s lawyer

‘A third term for Mahama will never happen’ – Titus Glover

0

Former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, has dismissed any alleged prospects of President John Mahama seeking a third term in office, describing any such ambition as unconstitutional.

Speaking to JoyNews at the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Mr Titus Glover accused President Mahama of orchestrating efforts to undermine the judiciary as a prelude to amending the constitution to extend his tenure.

“We want to assure President Mahama that he has been given the power to govern,” he said.

“But all the orchestration he is doing to get rid of the Chief Justice is a way of trying to amend the constitution. I have said it before, and I will repeat it: President Mahama’s third term will never happen.”

The former minister criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he described as a campaign of vilification against the Chief Justice, pointing to a flood of public commentary on the charges levelled against her.

“Today, she has filed an affidavit, and all she is asking for is to let the public know what is happening. Is this too much to ask?” he questioned.

Mr Titus Glover labelled the entire situation as a “calculated attempt” by the president, his government, and the party to weaken judicial independence.

He recalled a statement allegedly made by President Mahama during his campaign, vowing to deal with the Chief Justice upon coming to power.

Chef boiled to death in two-hour royal execution described as ‘worst ever’

A decadent feast in 1531 Lambeth, south London, took a sinister turn, culminating in one of history’s most chilling executions – death by boiling.

The fine dining experience turned fatal as guests became violently sick, with suspicion immediately falling on the cook, Richard Roose. Accusations flew that Roose had laced the food with a mysterious powder, leading to widespread illness.

King Henry VIII handed down a gruesome verdict for the alleged crime of poisoning. Roose was to die by being boiled alive, marking a grim first in British punitive measures.

Contemporary records are sparse on the horrid details of his demise, but it’s known Roose was bound to a gibbet before his body endured repeated immersions into scalding liquid. Audible above the crowd, he reportedly “roared mighty loud” and met his end after two torturous hours.

The method of boiling as an execution was envisioned as one drawn out in torture, ensuring the condemned felt the full torment of their scalding punishment, reports the Daily Star.

A two-year-old boy was almost boiled alive after accidentally falling into a cooking pot of scalding-hot water in Ukraine.Little Ivan Maletych is fighting for his life after he suffered horrific burns to 70 per cent of his body in the village of Susidovychi in southern Ukraine’s Lviv Oblast region.A heartbreaking picture taken by a charity volunteer shows Ivan lying on the bed covered in bandages after being hospitalised. (Image: undefined)

Burns from heat occur when skin cells are destroyed, though studies imply that it isn’t the burns themselves that kill but rather the subsequent bodily shock due to severe trauma.

Thermal injuries arise when skin or other bodily tissues are damaged or destroyed, and the accompanying state of shock – a perilous condition brought about by inadequate oxygen flow – can often prove fatal.

The NHS lists signs of shock as including a pale face, cold or clammy skin, a rapid pulse, fast, shallow breathing and unconsciousness. Severe burns can cause soft tissues to contract, resulting in skin tearing and the shrinking of fat and muscles, while burn-induced muscle contractions may lead to joint flexing.

Heat damage from burns has been shown to potentially cause respiratory failure by directly harming the airways, which can be fatal and is a leading cause of death among burn victims, especially those with inhalation injuries. Historical accounts note that Richard Roose suffered significant blisters from burns, but it’s not clear whether his cauldron contained water, oil, or wax.

Other historical records of similar gruesome deaths indicate that victims were placed in cool liquids that were then heated to boiling, prolonging the onset of shock and maximising pain. A YouTube video recounting such stories has viewers appalled at the barbaric punishments, with one saying it was the “worst execution.”

Another viewer added: “It’s hard to fathom the brutality these people inflicted on one another. We are the cruellest of all living species.”

A third added: “Even if guilty this punishment is beyond evil.”

This form of execution was so savage that it was subsequently banned by Edward VI in 1547. Nevertheless, accidental fatalities due to boiling can still tragically occur in the present day.

For example, in 2016, a 23 year old met a horrific end after falling into a hot spring at Yellowstone National Park in the US, his body dissolving in the intense heat. When his remains were discovered, the water was reportedly at a boiling temperature of 100°C (212°F).

According to the World Health Organisation, an estimated 180,000 deaths each year are attributed to burn injuries. In a chilling incident in 2019, two Russians were boiled alive when their vehicle plunged into a sinkhole filled with scorching water, having failed to swerve at the last moment.

Wontumi Detention: I will join NPP naked demo because I’ll have a lot to watch

The Member of Parliament for Ada, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah The Member of Parliament for Ada, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah

The Member of Parliament for Ada, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, has expressed her willingness to happily join a naked demonstration proposed by the former Greater Accra Regional Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the continued detention of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Moses Abor, had earlier warned that he might lead a naked demonstration to express the party’s displeasure and compel the John Mahama administration to release Chairman Wontumi, who is under investigation for serious criminal charges, including fraud and money laundering.

Abor joined a protest by NPP Members of Parliament and party supporters at the premises of EOCO on Thursday, May 29. 2025, over Wontumi’s detention beyond the constitutionally permitted 48-hour limit.

“We are telling the President of the Republic he has only two and a half years left, because in the last year, he cannot campaign. We don’t want to advise ourselves. I earlier told my General Secretary that if care is not taken, we will advise ourselves and hit the streets. If care is not taken, we are going to organise a naked demonstration in this country, because what is going on is not fair,” Abor stated.

However, speaking in an interview with Metro TV on Friday, May 30, 2025, it emerged that Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah motivation for joining the proposed demonstration was less about solidarity and more about personal amusement.

“They should just relax. I even heard they want to do a naked demo. For that one, I will join them — because if men are going to do a naked demo, it means there’ll be a lot of things to watch,” she said.

The First Deputy Majority Whip also called for calm and emphasized the responsibilities that come with holding public office.

“They should rather cease fire so we can all enjoy the peace we’re currently enjoying. If you want to work in a government institution, being invited to the Police Headquarters, EOCO, NIB, and the rest is part of the package. You want the benefits, but you don’t want to face the scrutiny.”

Parliament approves GHS10 billion for National Health Insurance Authority

0

Parliament of Ghana on Friday approved the 2025 formula for the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), allocating 10 billion Ghana Cedi to the Fund.

The NHIF provides financial backing for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), a social intervention programme intended to provide access to healthcare for all Ghanaians.

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is the government agency that manages the NHIF and ensures that the citizens are adequately catered for under the NHIS.

The proposed formula for the disbursement of the Fund are as follows: 2025 claims of GHc6.5 billion (65.1%), National Health Insurance Authority’s operational expenses of GHc1.2 billion (12.3%), support to the National Health Insurance Scheme District offices amounting to GHc124 million (1.2%) and GH¢984 million allocated to the Ministry of Health, representing 9.8 per cent.

Addressing the media in Parliament House in Accra on Friday, Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, said in 2024, six billion Ghana cedi was allocated to the NHIF, therefore allocating GH¢10 billion to the Fund this year would witness an increase in resource allocation.

The Minister explained that due to the uncapping of the NHIF in the 2025 Budget, the excess funds would be directed to supporting primary healthcare, fill the revenue gap created by withdrawal of donor support to the health sector and other portions would go to support the Ghana Trust  Fund, otherwise known as ‘Mahama Care’.

Mr Akandoh indicated that beyond the aforementioned allocations, the NHIF would also allocate funds towards dialysis treatment under the NHIS.

The Mahama-led Government had also put in place a policy framework for dialysis treatment in the country, the Minister stated.

Mr Akandoh noted that available statistics showed 45 per cent of mortality in the country was as a result of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), therefore, the Mahama Care initiative would provide funding for chronic NCDs including stroke and kidney infections.

The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) is funded through a combination of the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL), Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributions, and returns on NHIF investments.

The NHIF ensures that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) established by government in 2003 provide financial access to quality healthcare for Ghanaians.

Assin South MP breaks silence over threats after sponsoring anti-LGBT+ bill

Assin North MP, Rev Ntim Fordjour Assin North MP, Rev Ntim Fordjour

The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has revealed how some of his colleagues in Parliament attempted to dissuade him from sponsoring the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-LGBT+ Bill.

According to him, these colleagues urged him to withdraw his sponsorship after learning of threats of international sanctions planned by some foreign counterparts.

Speaking in an interview with media personality Kafui Dey, in a video shared on YouTube, Rev. Ntim Fordjour admitted that although he has faced some inconveniences due to his sponsorship of the bill, he remains undaunted and will continue to stand by his convictions.

“A lot of things I went through. Sometimes, my colleagues travel to other countries, and when they return, they are scared for me—because of the kinds of things said by foreign counterparts. Even though I am not present at those meetings, my name is mentioned. They come back and say, ‘Is it possible for you to reconsider your stance? Because if they carry out their threats, it will be terrible for you.’ But I say no. I am ready for whatever they will do.

“There have been many other inconveniences here and there, but if you are standing by your convictions, you must be prepared for inconveniences. If you are standing for the truth—standing for what is right and unconventional—you should expect the usual attacks. You need to be bold in this game if you stand for strong convictions,” Ntim Fordjour stated.

When asked if he ever felt that his support for the bill had put his life in danger, the politician and pastor responded in the affirmative.

“Oh yes, we got to that point. But you have to be bold and finish what you started.”

Rev. John Ntim Fordjour was one of the eight MPs who sponsored the previous anti-LGBTQ bill. Among the sponsors, he was the only MP from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), while the remaining seven were from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has announced that the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill—commonly referred to as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill—is set to be introduced for its first reading during the second meeting of the Ninth Parliament.

The proposed legislation aims to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, as well as the promotion, advocacy, or funding of such activities.

Bagbin made the announcement during his opening remarks to mark the official commencement of Parliament’s second meeting.

“Three private members’ bills—the Property Rights of Spouses Bill 2025, the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana Amendment Bill 2025, and the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2025—have completed the processes as required by the Standing Orders and are expected to be presented for a first reading during the course of this meeting,” he stated.

The bill, which has generated intense national and international debate, was previously passed by the Eighth Parliament. However, it failed to receive presidential assent under former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration and therefore did not become law.

With its reintroduction, the bill is expected to spark renewed discussions on human rights, constitutional freedoms, and Ghana’s cultural values.

Parliament is now poised to begin deliberations on the bill, which remains one of the most polarizing pieces of legislation in the country’s recent political history.

Autopsy confirms cause of nursing student who died in boyfriend’s room to be asthma

Gifty Okyere (right) died in the room of her boyfriend Edmond Ayomah Gifty Okyere (right) died in the room of her boyfriend Edmond Ayomah

An autopsy has confirmed that Gifty Okyere, a 28-year-old final-year nursing student at Sunyani Nursing and Midwifery Training College, died of an acute asthma attack in her boyfriend’s room, ruling out foul play.

According to a report by kessbenonline.com, preliminary accounts indicate that Okyere began experiencing breathing difficulties while in the room of her boyfriend, Edmond Ayomah, on May 27, 2025.

Despite efforts to assist her, she lost consciousness before emergency help could arrive.

Ayomah subsequently turned himself in to the local police, cooperating fully with authorities during the investigation.

The Ghana Police Service in Jinjini confirmed that a full autopsy conducted by the regional pathologist explicitly stated that Okyere died due to an acute asthma attack, with no signs of physical trauma or poisoning.

Edmond Ayomah, who had been under investigation, remains uncharged and has reportedly returned to his family as the official investigations draw to a close.

The confirmation of a natural cause of death has alleviated concerns of foul play, though the tragedy continues to resonate with many in Jinjini and beyond.

Gifty Okyere, described as a promising young woman, is set to be laid to rest, with the community mourning the loss of a life cut short.

This case has been closely followed since initial reports emerged, with speculations indicating foul play due to the circumstances of Gifty’s death.

Earlier reports had suggested that Gifty died from complications while attempting to commit abortion in the room of her boyfriend.

One more suspect arrested and remanded

0

A 41-year-old man, nabbed in connection with 32 vacuum-sealed plant-like substances suspected to be cannabis, has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Joey Mclaren Hammond faces charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, namely the exportation of narcotic drugs without a licence issued by the minister responsible for health, and two counts of unlawful possession or control of narcotic drugs without lawful authority.

Hammond’s plea was not taken by the court.

Browne-Frater Chyna Jade, a 22-year-old British national, is the first suspect, who had earlier been remanded by another circuit court.

The prosecution, led by Hilda Craig, Principal State Attorney, requested that the court remand Hammond.

Defence counsel opposed the prosecution’s request, arguing that Hammond should be granted bail.

The trial judge, Mr. Isaac Addo, held that, given the nature of the accusations against Hammond and the severity of the punishment, he would deny bail and remanded Hammond into Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) custody to reappear on June 16, 2025.

The facts before the court are that witnesses are authorised officers of NACOC stationed at Terminal Three of Kotoka International Airport in Accra.

The first suspect, Browne-Frater Chyna Jade, is a 22-year-old British national holding a United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland passport.

Jade was scheduled to travel on British Airways flight BA 2068 from Accra to London.

The second suspect, Joey Mclaren Hammond, is a Ghanaian businessman residing in East Legon, Accra.

NACOC received intelligence from its foreign counterparts concerning a drug trafficking syndicate engaged in smuggling Thai-grown and processed cannabis into the United Kingdom.

As a result, the first suspect, Jade, became a person of interest and was subsequently placed on the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) Stop List.

On May 18, 2025, at about 6:40 p.m., GIS officials apprehended the first suspect and handed her over to NACOC officers at the Departure Hall of the airport.

During an initial interrogation, she indicated that she had checked in one suitcase, the contents of which she claimed to be unaware of.

Acting on suspicion, NACOC officers traced the checked-in suitcase, which had already been loaded onto the aircraft, and had it offloaded.

Jade was then escorted to the NACOC office, where the suitcase, bearing a baggage tag in her name, was opened in her presence. Officers discovered thirty-two (32) vacuum-sealed slabs of a plant-like substance suspected to be narcotics. The total weight of the seized substance was approximately 17.92 kilograms, with an estimated street value of US$232,960.

A field test conducted on a sample of the substance yielded a positive result for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component in cannabis.

Jade was arrested on suspicion of attempting to export narcotic drugs and was taken to NACOC Headquarters for further investigation.

During interrogation, Jade said she had been invited to Ghana by her boyfriend, known only as “Joey.”

She further claimed that, on the day of her departure, Joey had packed her suitcase in her absence.

When quizzed further about its contents, she was allegedly told it contained Kpoo Keke alcoholic drink, Alomo Bitters, and assorted spices.

She denied any knowledge of the narcotic substances discovered in her luggage.

Efforts were initiated to locate and apprehend the individual identified as “Joey” to assist with ongoing investigations.

The seized narcotic exhibits were sealed in the presence of the suspect and are to be forwarded to the Ghana Standards Authority for analysis.

On Monday, May 26, 2025, Joey, previously declared at large, was arrested and detained in lawful custody.

He was later identified as Joey Mclaren Hammond, who voluntarily presented himself to NACOC in the company of his counsel.

During an identification parade, Jade identified Hammond as the one who handed her the intercepted suitcase.

Hammond admitted to knowing Jade and briefly hosting her in Tse-Addo but claimed he had no further contact with her thereafter.

The same day, Hammond was arrested, and NACOC officers conducted a search at his residence in East Legon, leading to the recovery of assorted weapons, seven wraps of cannabis, and four (4) partly smoked pieces of cannabis from his bedroom.

A black Range Rover vehicle with registration number GE 1435-25 was also impounded.

During an on-the-spot interrogation, Hammond admitted to using cannabis for recreational purposes.

Investigations are ongoing.

Dunstan Guba represented Ghana and the Ghana Police Service Dunstan Guba represented Ghana and the Ghana Police Service

Corporal Dunstan Guba of the Ghana Police Service has secured a silver medal, finishing in 3rd place at the INTERPOL Digital Security Challenge 2025, held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The intense three-day, non-stop Capture the Flag (CTF) competition brought together elite white-hat hackers from the law enforcement sector across over 60 countries.

Corporal Guba expressed his pride in representing Ghana and the Ghana Police Service, highlighting the opportunity to demonstrate the country’s offensive and defensive cyber capabilities in the fight against cybercrime on an international stage.

“I was honored to have represented Ghana and the Ghana Police Service and demonstrated our offensive and defensive cyber capabilities in fighting cybercrime on an international stage,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

The Digital Security Challenge, a prestigious event aimed at enhancing the skills of law enforcement personnel in digital forensics and cybersecurity, tested participants’ abilities in a simulated environment.

Corporal Guba’s achievement underscores Ghana’s growing proficiency in cybercrime prevention and response, aligning with the country’s efforts to strengthen its cyber security framework.

Ghana’s participation in such international forums is part of broader initiatives supported by global partnerships, including the Council of Europe’s Global Action on Cybercrime Extended (GLACY+) project.

The project has previously facilitated Ghana’s involvement in similar events, such as the 2024 Digital Security Challenge in Cebu, Philippines, where Ghanaian participants contributed to a team that placed 3rd.

Corporal Guba’s success at the 2025 challenge adds to Ghana’s track record in international cyber security competitions, reflecting the nation’s commitment to combating cyber threats.

The INTERPOL Digital Security Challenge continues to be a critical platform for fostering collaboration and skill development among global law enforcement agencies, with Ghana’s strong showing this year highlighting its emerging role in the global cyber security landscape.

Government to sanction telcos over poor services

0

The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has issued a stark warning to all mobile network operators in the country to improve the quality of services by December 31, 2025, or face unprecedented financial penalties, with a substantial portion of these fines directly compensating affected customers.

The stern directive came during a high-level meeting on Friday, May 30, 2025, where the minister convened with the CEOs and technical teams of MTN, Telecel, and AT.

His message was unequivocal and emphasised that despite vast infrastructure and visible presence across the country, subscribers are enduring consistently poor service, particularly in rapidly expanding urban centres and crucial regional towns.

“We are not doing sentiments. We are doing engineering,” Mr. George asserted, emphasising an action-driven approach. “If you have infrastructure in place but your service is poor, we must begin to take regulatory action.”

The meeting featured a presentation by the National Communications Authority (NCA), based on a comprehensive assessment of 48 localities nationwide.

This study, prompted by a surge in public complaints, evaluated operators across four critical Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): 3G Coverage, Call Setup Time (CST), Mean Opinion Score (MOS) for call quality, and 3G Data Throughput.

READ ALSO: Wontumi’s lawyers secure second surety for GH₵50m bail conditions

The findings revealed alarming inconsistencies in service delivery across all three providers.

Mr. George, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, specifically cited examples from economically vital areas like Amasaman and East Legon, highlighting how, despite expanded coverage, the quality of service has sharply declined.

Parts of the capital, Accra, are experiencing frustrating network “blackouts” and substandard 4G performance.

The minister announced that a full nationwide test covering every district capital would be conducted by the NCA in the third quarter of 2025.

“On the basis of that result, if we don’t see improvements, we will have to start taking decisive action,” he warned.

In a potentially transformative policy, Mr. George disclosed that a portion of any fines imposed on defaulting telcos would directly benefit the public.

“About 40 per cent of any fines imposed on defaulting telcos would be returned to the affected consumers, either through bonus data or call time,” he revealed.

This mechanism is designed to ensure tangible compensation for subscribers experiencing poor service, moving beyond mere regulatory penalties.

Operators have been granted a strict 30-day window, expiring June 30, 2025, to complete the acceptance process for newly allocated spectrum.

The minister stressed that by the end of December, a demonstrable improvement in service quality, directly linked to this new spectrum, would be expected.

“We know you can’t complete upgrades in three months, but we must see that the process has begun. The Ghanaian people must feel the impact of the spectrum rollout by the end of this year,” he underscored.

The telecommunications executives, recognising the gravity of the situation, outlined significant measures to address the concerns.

MTN Ghana CEO, Stephen Blewett, announced a substantial $230 million investment in 2024, earmarked for bolstering network infrastructure and IT systems. He also disclosed plans to open 300 new franchise stores, specifically targeting underserved areas, and recruit 400 new front-facing staff with a dedicated GH₵ 25 million internal budget. Upcoming self-service options, including SIM swaps and PIN resets with robust identity verification, are also in the pipeline to combat fraud.

Telecel Ghana Chief Operating Officer, Mohamad Ghaddar, reiterated his company’s commitment to superior customer experience, emphasising continuous network optimisation.

While acknowledging receipt of some spectrum, he stressed the ongoing need for more to meet burgeoning demand.

Telecel is expanding its retail footprint, with over 400 shops currently operational and plans to add 100 more.

The company also highlighted its support services for persons with special needs and welcomed regulatory feedback.

AT CEO Leo Skarlatos acknowledged the public as the “ultimate stakeholder”.

He assured that AT is undergoing significant network improvements, which are anticipated to be “clearly visible by the first quarter of the following year.”

Skarlatos expressed confidence in the ongoing transformation and extended an open invitation for stakeholders to witness these enhancements firsthand early next year.

Beyond service quality, the minister also touched upon data pricing.

He recalled the establishment of a committee in February 2025 tasked with developing a strategic roadmap for gradual data cost reduction.

This approach aims to avoid market shocks, prioritising improvements in value (e.g., more data for the same price) rather than immediate, drastic price cuts, to protect investment planning and industry viability.

This bold stance by the Ministry of Communication signals a new era of stringent regulatory oversight, prioritising consumer experience and holding telcos accountable for the quality of services they provide in Ghana’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.

The National Investigation Bureau (NIB) denied former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and other New Patriotic Party (NPP) leaders access to the detained Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, citing the need for authorization from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin disclosed this after a meeting with NIB officials at their Ridge office on Friday, May 30.

Dr Bawumia, Afenyo-Markin, and an entourage of NPP leaders had visited the NIB to check on Chairman Wontumi’s welfare, who has been in EOCO’s custody since Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Afenyo-Markin revealed that NIB officials informed them that Chairman Wontumi was not at the Ridge premises but was being held at their Kawukudi office. The officials stated that access to Wontumi could only be granted upon authorization from EOCO.

“Well, all those arrangements were made, and upon getting here, they came to tell us a different story. We will keep to it, and I find it very worrying that in a country like Ghana, someone would demand GH₵50 million before they grant enquiry bail,” Afenyo-Markin said.

He expressed frustration, noting, “Not at all, he is nowhere to be found. They claim they could not bring him here, and he is still in the custody of NIB at their Kawukudi office. They claim until EOCO authorizes, we cannot see him.”

Afenyo-Markin also criticized the arrest of Chairman Wontumi as a “show of power” by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), suggesting it was an attempt to assert dominance. “They just want to teach Wontumi where power lies,” he told journalists after the visit.

Dr Bawumia echoed concerns about the GH₵50 million bail condition imposed on Wontumi, questioning its feasibility.

“I don’t know how many people in Ghana have properties worth 50 million,” he said, believing the condition was designed to prevent Wontumi’s timely release.

He assured that the NPP would pursue legal avenues to ensure Wontumi’s release.

Chairman Wontumi was transferred from EOCO’s headquarters to the NIB office on Friday, May 30, as part of ongoing investigations into alleged criminal offenses, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem Sai has indicated that a second phase of the investigation links Wontumi to a wider international organized crime syndicate.
