Special Prosecutor calls for stronger anti-corruption collaboration

0

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has called for greater collaboration between institutional heads and anti-corruption bodies to address the persistent challenge of corruption, which continues to drain resources critical for delivering essential public services.

He stressed that the fight against corruption must be anchored in justice, integrity, and inclusivity, ensuring no one is left behind.

Speaking at the opening session of a two-day West Africa Regional Anti-Corruption Policy Dialogue in Accra on Monday, June 2, organised by Transparency International Ghana (formerly the Ghana Integrity Initiative) under the theme, “Breaking Barriers: Transforming Healthcare and Education Access for Women through Inclusive Policies and Practices,” Mr. Agyebeng highlighted the need for stronger institutional collaboration in tackling corruption.

He revealed to the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Professor Samuel Kaba, and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, that his office is currently investigating both agencies over alleged corrupt practices involving some staff.

“About corrupt practices and actors, we are seeing unbelievable new forms which is mitigating against education generally and healthcare provision. In your sector, we are seeing officers claiming money and facilities for non-existent schools. We are finding people carrying laptops with the Director-General’s signature on their laptops, giving out appointment letters on their laptops, giving out appointment letters wherever they go and purporting to be appointing teachers,” he said.

Mr. Agyebeng also urged stakeholders to rethink and reimagine governance approaches, making them more functional and responsive to economic realities. He further called on the Constitutional Review Commission to consider introducing a dedicated chapter in the Constitution focused on anti-corruption.

Outrage in Kenya over detention of software developer

0

Attempts to get Rose Njeri released on bail have failed, a lawyer says Attempts to get Rose Njeri released on bail have failed, a lawyer says

Kenyans have expressed outrage over the detention of a software developer who created a tool to help people oppose the government’s annual finance bill because of fears that it will raise the cost of living.

Rose Njeri was detained on Friday after police raided her home in the capital, Nairobi, and seized electronic devises, activists said.

Police and the government have not yet commented on the detention of the mother of two.

Mass protests broke out last year after the government proposed tax hikes, forcing President William Ruto to withdraw the 2024 finance bill.

The bill outlines how the government intends to raise income.

At least 50 people were killed and dozens were abducted in a security force crackdown to end the protests that broke out last year.

Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Faith Odhiambo told the BBC Newsday radio programme that Ms Njeri’s detention was a “recurrence of dictatorship”.

On Sunday, a group of activists gathered outside a police station in Nairobi, where the software developer is being held, to demand her release.

Ms Odhiambo said that Ms Njeri – whom activists visited in prison – was “crestfallen” because with Monday being a public holiday, she had not yet been brought to court.

Attempts to get her released on bail had failed, she added.

“This has always been a government way of oppressing, intimidating and suppressing citizens because they know the courts don’t sit over the weekend – and now we have a public holiday,” Ms Odhiambo said.

Boniface Mwangi, one of the activists who had visited Ms Njeri in custody, said she told them that police had ransacked her house and taken her phone, laptop and hard drives.

He said she was worried about her two children.

“Imagine having to tell her children that she’s in jail for developing a website that eases public participation for Kenyans who want to submit their proposals on the 2025 budget,” he said on X.

Ms Njeri was detained after sharing a link to a site that flagged clauses in the bill that she said would lead to the cost of living escalating. It also allowed people to email parliament, calling for the bill to be withdrawn.

She also raised concern that a proposal to amend tax procedures, allowing the tax authority to access personal data without a court order, could undermine privacy rights.

The new finance bill replaces the zero-rated tax provision on essential commodities with tax-exempt status.

Zero-rated goods are taxed at 0%, and suppliers do not charge value-added tax (VAT) to customers but can still claim input VAT on the materials used in producing these goods.

Tax-exempted goods are also not subject to VAT but suppliers cannot claim back input VAT, leading to higher prices for consumers or reduced profit margins for businesses, economists and activists say.

Finance minister John Mbadi recently admitted that tax-exempt goods may be “slightly more expensive” but explained that the move was necessary to close tax loopholes.

He said the government had determined that traders do not pass the zero-rating benefit to consumers, while some make “fictitious and fake” claims for refunds.

Mbadi is scheduled to present the government’s spending and tax proposals in parliament next week.

Last week, Ruto apologised to Kenyan youth for “any misstep” in dealing with them since he took office in 2022.

Last month, he said that all the people who had been abducted after last year’s protests against tax hikes had been “returned to their families”.

It’s difficult for comedians to open up because people take it as a joke – MJ

Ghanaian comedian Musah Junior, popularly known as MJ the Comedian, has revealed that it is often difficult for comedians to open up on their struggles because people tend to label their concerns as jokes.

Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime on May 30, 2025, MJ explained that it can be disheartening when comedians try to express themselves, only for those around them to overlook their emotions or fail to recognise when something is wrong.

“It’s difficult for comedians to open up to people because when you do, they probably think you’re dropping a joke, meanwhile you’re talking about serious issues. That’s where extremely close people have to be very mindful of us as entertainers. They should be able to draw that thin line between we being funny and we being serious.

“Sometimes it gets very sad when you’re trying to really express yourself and sometimes you won’t even talk, there are some things you will see that the person around you should be able to notice that everything is not right” MJ the Comedian said.

He added that most comedians struggling with depression are usually tied to financial issues.

“It’s not just for me but some of my colleagues, majority of depression is because of money,” he said.

He added, “Most of my colleagues, those times whiles we were trying to make our industry a very nice place, some of my colleagues wanted to stop doing it because we weren’t getting what we were investing in, our time, the money and everything but as at now, those who are really depressed that I know in my team are now okay.”

Eight out of nine ‘no-go’ forest reserves cleared of illegal miners

0

The government has successfully removed illegal miners from eight out of nine forest reserves previously designated as no-go zones due to severe environmental degradation, President John Dramani Mahama has revealed.

Speaking at the Global Mining Summit, on Monday, June 2, 2025, President Mahama described the action as a major milestone in the country’s renewed efforts to reclaim degraded lands and promote responsible mining.

He stressed that the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to ensure sustainability within the mining sector and protect Ghana’s natural ecosystems.

“Let me be clear at this juncture, artisanal miners are not enemies of the state. If properly trained and supported, they can be allies in our development,” the President said, adding “Working together with the small-scale mining sector, we will reclaim our forest reserves and restore the purity of our water bodies.”

He added that the government has deployed river guards to combat illegal mining along water bodies and riverbanks and emphasised the importance of regulating the use of heavy machinery in mining operations.

“We will track excavators to know whether they are being used for illegal mining. Ghana currently has more excavators than the rest of Africa combined. The new permitting regime will not allow you to import any excavator unless you have a valid permit to do so,” Mahama stated.

He noted that the government is collaborating with small-scale miners to support land reclamation, reflecting a shift toward more inclusive and environmentally conscious mining policies.

“This first set has been tested and everything is good, we will continue to get some more parts and assemble more and make it a continuous affair.”

In the area of banking, Dr Nduom expressed the hope of getting back his banking license soon to complete and operate a stalled bank project on campus for teaching and learning.

“As soon as that happens, we are not just going to use the building and facility for teaching but there will be practical experience for students to know how to do all aspects of banking so that they will graduate with some experience in banking,” he added.

He stressed that graduates of the school stood out because of the school’s philosophy hinged on leadership, light and talent.

Dr Nduom announced efforts by the school to acquire a charter to become a full-blown university.

“We believe the occasion should be an assurance to the public that Nduom School of Business and Technology will continue to progress and deliver the kind of education relevant to today’s world,” Dr Nduom added.

To make their graduates stand out, they were thought to be ethical and follow rules and regulations to the latter.

The French language was also a compulsory course for students, positioning them to fit perfectly everywhere in the world, he added.

“French is important to us because all the countries surrounding us speak French. We need to be very much intentional about teaching our students the French language,” he stressed.

Prof Nyarko entreated the graduates to demonstrate the skills and knowledge acquired from the school for the benefit of their immediate communities and the country at large.

Cedi may end 2025 at GH¢11 or GH¢12 to a dollar

Cedi currently selling at GH¢10.27 Cedi currently selling at GH¢10.27

The Head of Finance at Merban Capital, Nelson Cudjoe Kuagbedzi, has countered projections by research institutions that the local currency will end 2025 at GH¢13 or GH¢15.

According to him, the cedi may rather stabilise at GH¢11 or GH¢12 to the dollar by the end of 2025.

He noted that the current gains being witnessed in performance cannot be sustained in the long run, as the government will soon have to start spending.

Kuagbedzi noted that when the government starts spending, the exchange rate will see some depreciation.

“We don’t expect the cedi to appreciate throughout the year; at a point, it will stagnate, and actually settle within a band. I do not agree with the projection by Fitch and others, saying that the cedi will stagnate at GH¢15 by the end of the year.

“Within the short term, you will realise that the government is trying to build enough reserves to meet the demand of those who need the forex,” he was quoted by citinewsroom.com to have said.

He noted that the currency will begin depreciating again before stabilising at GH¢12 by the end of the year.

“Again, the government has not started paying out its payables, because those payables are still under audit. Even though we have not started servicing debts yet, since they came to power. So, we expect that once those expenditures set in, the currency will begin to shake again.

“We don’t expect it to go beyond GH¢12 by the end of the year. I expect the cedi to stabilise with the band of GH¢11 or GH¢12 by the close of the year. Currently, the government is embarking on a contractionary Economic Policy. They are not spending on or starting any mega project. So, there is enough reserve with the Bank of Ghana. As soon as they start spending, you will see that the cedi will begin to shake. But it will stagnate within the band of GH¢11 by the end of the year,” he stated.

The local currency, the cedi, has appreciated against major foreign currencies in the past few weeks to currently selling at GH¢10.27 to a dollar.

Style Inspiration For All White Lovers

0

If you’re captivated by the timeless elegance of all-white ensembles, you’re not alone. The all-white look has transcended seasonal trends to become a staple of refined fashion. Whether you’re attending a summer soirée, a beach wedding, or simply embracing the minimalist aesthetic, styling white-on-white outfits can be both versatile and sophisticated.

To prevent an all-white outfit from appearing flat, incorporate a mix of textures and fabrics. Pairing a crisp white cotton blouse with linen trousers or a silk camisole with white denim adds depth and interest to your ensemble. Lace, crochet, and eyelet fabrics also introduce subtle patterns that enhance the visual appeal of monochromatic looks.

Accessories can transform an all-white outfit from simple to standout. Neutral-toned accessories like beige sandals or tan handbags maintain the outfit’s elegance, while bold accents such as gold jewelry or a vibrant clutch add a pop of color and personality. Statement pieces like chunky necklaces or oversized sunglasses can also elevate the look.

Experimenting with different silhouettes can add dimension to your all-white attire. Consider pairing a fitted white top with wide-leg trousers or layering a tailored blazer over a flowing dress. Layering not only adds complexity but also allows for adaptability across various settings and temperatures.

Given the potential for transparency in white clothing, selecting appropriate undergarments is crucial. Opt for nude or skin-toned pieces that blend seamlessly with your complexion to maintain the outfit’s sleek appearance.

Mixing shades like ivory, cream, and off-white can add subtle contrast and prevent the outfit from looking too uniform. This approach adds depth while maintaining the cohesive, monochromatic theme.

All-white outfits can be tailored to suit various occasions. For casual settings, a white tee paired with denim shorts offers a relaxed vibe. For formal events, a structured white dress or a coordinated pantsuit exudes sophistication. Adjusting the formality of your white ensemble ensures appropriateness and style.

‘Fidelity Bank Committed To Climate Resilience’

Atta Yeboah Gyan

Fidelity Bank Ghana has underscored its commitment to integrating climate adaptation into its core lending strategy, highlighting its role in private capital mobilisation for a climate-resilient future.

Atta Yeboah Gyan, Deputy Managing Director, Operations and Support Functions at Fidelity Bank, shared the bank’s innovative approach during a panel discussion at the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program Partnership Forum at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

It was held under the theme: “Unlocking growth through climate resilience and private sector leadership.”

“At Fidelity Bank Ghana, we consider climate adaptation a strategic imperative – not only as a risk management issue, but also a value creation opportunity,” Mr. Gyan stated.

He explained the bank’s proactive stance, indicating, “We have identified climate risk as a critical ESG material topic through our double materiality assessment, integrated into our environmental and social governance processes.”

According to him, this commitment is further solidified by a robust Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS), meticulously aligned with IFC Performance Standards and the Bank of Ghana’s Sustainable Banking Principles.

To effectively manage both physical and transition climate risks, Mr. Gyan said, “We recently conducted our first portfolio-level climate scenario analysis across our Retail and Corporate & Investment Banking (CIB) segments.”

This comprehensive assessment, which also included an internal analysis of potential climate-related disruptions to the bank’s branches and ATMs, has directly informed the creation of detailed climate risk heat maps, significantly enhancing the bank’s understanding of exposure and reinforcing long-term resilience.

He noted that the bank’s three-year Climate Implementation Plan, aligned with Ghana’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), further solidifies this vision, ensuring that its financing supports national climate adaptation priorities.

Mr. Gyan said Fidelity Bank was intentionally embedding climate risk screening into its credit assessments, with a particular focus on vulnerable sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, and SMEs.

Beyond internal risk management, Fidelity Bank is actively working to unlock private finance for adaptation and resilience across Ghana, he added.

President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the introduction of the Goldbod initiative has significantly improved Ghana’s gold sector, generating $2.7 billion in revenue between January and April through exports managed by the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) and Goldbod.

He indicated that the figure is expected to rise steadily over the course of the year.

Speaking at the Global Mining Summit on Monday, June 2, the President underscored the importance of the initiative in his administration’s efforts to reform the gold mining industry.

“The Goldbod, a key plank in my administration strategy to reform the gold mining sector and ensure maximum benefit for Ghanaians for our gold resources, has taken off. In its short existence, it has sanitised the gold sector, ensuring maximum returns from our gold export,” President Mahama stated.

He added:

“Ghana’s gold export earns the country 2.7 billion. Ghana’s gold export through the PMMC and Goldbod earns the country 2.7 billion dollars between January and April, and this figure is expected to increase exponentially throughout the year.”

The Goldbod initiative forms part of a broader strategy aimed at curbing illegal mining, increasing transparency in gold trade, and ensuring that Ghana maximises revenue from its mineral resources.

President Mahama noted that the reforms have not only boosted earnings but also enhanced institutional oversight across the gold mining value chain.

Government warned of reputational damage over lack of action

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

A governance analyst and lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), Dr Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, has warned that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s failure to take decisive action against Anne Sansa Daly, could harm its reputation.

According to him, if those found culpable in this case are not sanctioned, it will erode the public’s trust in the government and undermine its moral authority to hold other offenders accountable.

“That’s certain because some people have stolen goats and they have gone to jail for it. So, how do you expect that a person who has misled the entire country and told big lies will go unpunished? That should not be.

“If that happens, what moral right will we have as a people and as a country to punish somebody who slaps another person – on grounds of physical assault. Can we insist on prosecuting such a person? We will not have the moral right to do that if we let Daly’s case go unpunished,” he told GhanaWeb on June 1, 2025.

He argued that if the government takes action in this case, it will serve as a deterrent to others who may attempt to seek government or public service appointments with questionable backgrounds and credentials.

“So, we have to use this as a point of reference to correct the anomaly of people who think that they can deceive the country.

“Look, somewhere on her CV, she has written that she did a course at the University of Ghana but that course she mentioned does not even exist. It’s pure fraud. If you don’t punish her, what moral right will you have to punish others should they go wrong?” he remarked.

Anne Sansa Daly’s appointment was revoked by President John Dramani Mahama following public outrage over her appointment and questionable credentials.

Asantehene commends Sammy Gyamfi over strategic leadership with Goldbod

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has commended the Goldbod CEO The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has commended the Goldbod CEO

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has lauded the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi, for his decisive leadership and commitment to ensuring Ghana reaps maximum value from its gold and mineral resources.

Speaking at the official opening of the Mining in Motion Summit in Accra on Monday , June 2, 2025, Otumfuo emphasised that Ghana’s longstanding challenge has not been the lack of natural resources, but rather the inability to fully capitalize on them in the competitive global market.

“Probably the most costly effect of illicit mining to me is the distraction from the real challenge we face, which is how we maximise the benefits of our noble heritage. We have to be true to ourselves and admit that we have not done a good job of representing and protecting ourselves in the competitive global market,” Otumfuo stated.

In his remarks, the Asantehene praised Sammy Gyamfi for his bold and patriotic leadership at GoldBod, noting that his efforts are helping shift the national focus from reactive responses to illegal mining toward proactive strategies that secure long-term value from Ghana’s mineral wealth.

“Sammy, I thank you very much on this one,” Otumfuo said, acknowledging Gyamfi’s role in advocating for stronger institutions, value addition, and equitable returns from the gold industry.

The commendation comes at a time when Ghana is intensifying efforts to formalise the mining sector, increase local participation, and curb the harmful environmental and economic effects of illegal mining.

Under Gyamfi’s leadership, GoldBod has emerged as a vocal proponent of responsible mining, transparent governance, and Ghanaian ownership of strategic mineral assets.

Otumfuo reiterated that the conversation around mining must go beyond policing illegal activities to include systemic reforms that elevate Ghana’s position in the global mineral value chain.

“Through the mining industry, and gold in particular, we have the opportunity to rewrite our story but only if we take ourselves seriously,” he said.

The Asantehene’s endorsement of GoldBod’s direction signals growing support from traditional leadership for reforms aimed at maximising national benefits from Ghana’s natural resources.

Don’t blame President Mahama for ‘fake’ doctor’s appointment

0

Dr Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah is a government analyst

Dr Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, a governance analyst and lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, has stated that President John Dramani Mahama should not be blamed for the appointment and subsequent revocation of Anne Sansa Daly, whose medical credentials have come under public scrutiny.

Speaking exclusively in an interview with GhanaWeb’s Mandy Agyemang on June 1, 2025, Dr Otchere-Ankrah explained that although the president holds the appointing authority, the names of nominees are submitted to him by other individuals.

He added that those who put forward these nominations are expected to conduct thorough due diligence and background checks to verify the authenticity of the nominees’ credentials before presenting them to the president for approval.

“I have said somewhere on another platform that you can’t blame the president. How do you blame the president when these names are submitted by individuals, societies and by groups?

“If the government wants to give an appointment to anybody, they will simply have to give the person’s details to National Security, and they can do a thorough job. So, I can say from hindsight that due diligence was not done,” he said.

Dr Otchere-Ankrah further noted that the president, though solely responsible for appointing individuals to high-level institutions and boards, may not personally know all the nominees.

He argued that those who nominated Anne Sansa Daly and submitted her name to the president for appointment should rather be held accountable and face the necessary consequences.

“Several people have got interest in this thing, so, party members and party executives will bring names and say ‘president, these are those who helped us so we want them appointed’ and so, the president may not know,” he indicated.

He continued, “Look, the president alone has got the authority to appoint over 1,500 people. Do we sincerely think that the president knows even up to half of those people he appoints? Certainly not, so, it is first of all those who nominated her, those who brought her name up, who perhaps did not know much about her or failed to have known better, they didn’t do their work well.”

Speaking at the launch last Thursday, the Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, mentioned that agriculture is the bedrock of Ghana’s economy, stressing that the sector employs about 75% of the rural population.

He added that the Bridge-in Agriculture programme is aligned with the ministry’s agenda of Feed Ghana programme, which seeks to ensure all year round production, and improve productivity through food systems resilience.

The Deputy Minister further stated that the initiative is a strategic intervention to target the structural problems facing the sector such as limited finance, inadequate infrastructure and slow adaptation to modern practices.

He disclosed that the programme will help young entrepreneurs transition their businesses from subsistent farming to commercially viable and technological enable enterprises that are fit for both domestic consumption and export.

He advised the youth in agribusiness to start small and build upon their growth, in order not to accumulate so much loses as startup, and urged them to take advantage of the initiative to build sustainable businesses and become job creators, to help build a prosperous agriculture sector.

He also applauded the banks for their support to the programme.

Speaking at the launch, the Managing Director of CrossBoundary Advisory and Programme Lead for Bridge-in Agriculture, Fanta Conde, mentioned that the programme seeks to unlock the potentials of the agriculture sector, focusing on creating dignified employment for women, and investing in the agricultural sector.

She stated that the programme provides access to affordable capital from their partners to the SMEs in the agricultural sector, capacity building, technical assistance and training for youth and women to acquire business skills to influence the agricultural sector.

Fanta added that the goal of the programme is to impact 400,000 young people, with 70% being women and 5% persons with disabilities.

Beneficiaries also shared the impact of the programme for their businesses. The founder and manager of Tropical Snacks, Augustina Asor Tufuor, testified that the training she received from Africa Skills Hub helped her gain the necessary knowledge needed for her business, adding that the 5,000 dollars she received for emerging as winner of the pitch competition helped support her business, which she used to purchase machines to improve productivity and also employ new staff to join her production team, as well as expand the number of farmers required for the business.

She urged young entrepreneurs to be open minded and ready to learn new things.

Mahama proposes permit system for excavator imports to fight illegal mining

0

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to introduce a permit system to regulate the importation of excavators as part of broader efforts to tackle illegal mining in Ghana.

Speaking at the Mining in Motion Conference, President Mahama outlined several measures his administration would implement to sanitize the mining sector and protect the environment.

He noted that Ghana currently has more excavators than any other African country, a situation he described as troubling given the role these machines play in illegal mining activities.

The proposed permit system, he explained, will help control who can import and operate excavators, thereby curbing their misuse in unauthorized mining operations.

Adding his voice to the discussion, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, described the illegal mining crisis as deeply concerning. He cited regulatory lapses, political misjudgments, and corruption as major obstacles undermining the fight against galamsey.

Otumfuo emphasized the need for stronger leadership and accountability to bring lasting solutions to the issue.

More than 700 believed dead in devastating Nigeria floods

0

The official death toll after deadly floods hit the Nigerian town of Mokwa on Thursday has risen to more than 200, officials say.

Another 500 people are still missing in the town in the central Niger State however, local official Musa Kimboku told the BBC that rescue efforts had ceased because authorities no longer believe anyone could still be found alive.

The floods, said to be worst in the area for 60 years, swept through the Mokwa districts of Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa after torrential rains.

In an effort to prevent disease in the area, authorities will soon start to dig out corpses buried underground, Mokwa’s district head Muhammadu Aliyu said.

Recounting scenes of catastrophe, local residents told the BBC that they saw their homes and family members get washed away.

One man, Adamu Yusuf, lost his wife and newborn baby.

“I watched helplessly as water washed away my family. I survived because I could swim,” he told the BBC.

Another resident, Saliu Sulaiman, said the floods had left him homeless and destroyed some of his cash business profits.

“I lost at least $1,500 to the floods. It was the proceeds from the sale of my farm produce the previous day. I contemplated going back into the room to get it, but the pressure of the water scared me.”

Some local residents have said that the flooding was so devastating because a nearby dam had burst, however the authorities have not confirmed this.

Residents said the pressure of the floodwater was so intense that bodies had been washed up in the town of Rabba, at least an hour’s drive from Mokwa.

Mokwa’s Deputy Vice-Chairman Musa Kimboku said they had told neighbouring villages to bury “any corpse that they find.”

District head Mr Aliyu said some bodies were unrecoverable because they had gone “through the River Niger”.

On Sunday, the National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) announced it had started the process of providing relief packages to people affected.

The agency added in a post on Facebook that roads and bridges were also affected by the flood, which has had a knock-on effect on the local economy and traffic.

The Nigerian Red Cross also released a statement on Friday saying the floods had caused “significant loss of life and widespread distress”.

Floods are not uncommon during the Nigerian rainy season, which lasts from April until October.

In 2024, Nigeria experienced flooding from heavy rain which caused deaths and drove people from their homes.

There was also severe flooding in 2022, when more than 600 people died and 1.3 million were displaced.

Illegal miners removed from eight forest reserves

0

John Dramani Mahama is the President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama is the President of Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a significant breakthrough in Ghana’s efforts to combat illegal mining, revealing that illegal miners have been successfully cleared from eight of the nine forest reserves previously devastated by environmental degradation.

Speaking at the Global Mining Summit in Accra on Monday, the President described the achievement as a landmark moment in the country’s renewed push to restore degraded lands and promote responsible mining practices.

“This is a major milestone in our renewed commitment to reclaim our environment and safeguard our natural ecosystems,” President Mahama stated.

The clearance operation is part of a comprehensive national strategy aimed at balancing ecological protection with sustainable resource extraction.

The President emphasized that small-scale miners have a legitimate role to play in Ghana’s development, provided they are properly trained and regulated.

“Let me be clear; artisanal miners are not enemies of the state,” he declared.

“If properly trained and supported, they can become valuable allies in our development agenda. Working together, we will reclaim our forest reserves and restore the purity of our water bodies.”

As part of enhanced regulatory enforcement, the government has deployed “river guards”, tasked with protecting Ghana’s waterways from illegal mining activities.

Additionally, the President announced new stringent measures to regulate the use and importation of excavators, which are frequently implicated in environmental destruction.

“We will track all excavators to ensure they are not being used for illegal mining,” he stressed.

“Ghana currently has more excavators than the rest of Africa combined. Moving forward, no one will be allowed to import an excavator without a valid permit under the new regulatory framework.”

President Mahama revealed that the government is partnering with small-scale mining associations to lead land reclamation efforts, signaling a shift toward more collaborative and environmentally responsible policies in the mining sector.

Jurors withdraw services over 8 months unpaid allowances

0

Jurors at the Accra High Court have announced the withdrawal of their services effective Monday, June 2, citing the non-payment of their allowances for the past eight months.

According to the group, several attempts to retrieve their payments have yielded no results. Despite formally notifying the Acting Chief Justice of their intended absence, they said they have not received any concrete assurance regarding when the arrears will be settled.

Speaking to Citi News on Monday, June 2, a spokesperson for the group, Joshua Alorgbey, described the situation as a disregard for their welfare and financial security, emphasising that without immediate payment, members cannot continue to show up for proceedings.

“We are in the eighth month, and they have not paid the jurors as I speak. The jurors have served a notice to the acting Chief Justice and the Judiciary Service that they are embarking on a strike from today, June 2.

“We had a series of meetings with the acting Chief Justice and the Judicial Service. The series of meetings began in October 2024, but they kept postponing it. The legal year will end very soon. What will become of our money? We cannot continue refinancing or going to court anymore,” he said.

Mahama’s Words Mean Nothing If US Military Base Remains – Kwesi Pratt

0

According to a report by Ghanaweb, Veteran journalist and managing editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has criticized former President John Dramani Mahama’s condemnation of Donald Trump’s alleged racist remarks, arguing that Mahama’s comments would be meaningless if he does not address the presence of a United States military base in Ghana.

Speaking on the issue, Pratt insisted that Ghana’s sovereignty must be defended in practical terms and not just through rhetoric.

According to him, any meaningful opposition to racism and imperialism must begin with the rejection of foreign military occupation, particularly by the United States.

“The Americans have a military base in Ghana, they control a significant portion of our military operations. What is more racist and neo-colonial than that?” Pratt said.

He questioned the sincerity of Mahama’s criticism of Trump, noting that former presidents and political leaders who facilitated or allowed such arrangements with foreign powers lack the moral standing to challenge systemic racism from Western leaders.

Mahama had earlier condemned a controversial remark allegedly made by Donald Trump, the former U.S. president, in which he reportedly referred to African countries in derogatory terms.

Mahama described the comments as “offensive, dehumanizing and a stark reminder of the deep-seated racism still prevalent in global leadership.”

However, Pratt argued that symbolic denunciations are not enough if they are not matched by firm political action.

“John Mahama’s reaction to Trump’s racism claim will mean nothing if the US military base remains on our soil,” Pratt said.

He further pointed out that the agreement which allows the U.S. military unrestricted access to certain facilities and exempts American personnel from Ghanaian laws was signed during the tenure of Mahama’s successor, but that the broader political establishment—including Mahama—has failed to take decisive action against it.

Pratt emphasized that real resistance to racism, imperialism, and white supremacy must involve rejecting foreign domination in all its forms, including military presence.

He called on Ghanaians to demand accountability from their leaders and to prioritize national sovereignty.

The issue of the U.S. military presence in Ghana has long sparked debate and controversy.

In 2018, Ghana signed a defense cooperation agreement with the United States which granted the U.S. military broad access to facilities and logistics in Ghana.

The agreement led to widespread protests at the time, with critics warning it compromised Ghana’s sovereignty.

Pratt’s comments revive these concerns and place renewed pressure on political leaders to revisit the terms of the deal.

He asserted that the continued presence of foreign troops on Ghanaian soil undercuts any stance against racial injustice coming from Western powers.

“To stand against racism, we must stand against every symbol and system of white domination—including military bases that compromise our independence,” he said.

As the discourse continues, many observers are now questioning whether Mahama and other leading politicians will respond substantively to these criticisms or continue to focus solely on the rhetoric of anti-racism, leaving structural issues unaddressed.

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has petitioned the Ghana Medical and Dental Council (GMDC) and the institution responsible for the registration of doctors in the United States (US) over the qualification of Dr Anne Sansa Daly, whose appointment to the Governing Board of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) was recently revoked.

The Caucus, in a petition filed by its Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, asked the two councils to verify whether Dr Sansa Daly, who claimed to be a Johns Hopkins-trained medical doctor, was affiliated with them.

It also asked the GMDC to clarify whether a person who is not a registered medical doctor in Ghana can parade him/herself as such and offer services to the public.

The Minority, in their petition, demanded that the Ghana Medical Council, as the regulatory body of medical practice in Ghana, answer the following urgent questions.

1. If Dr Anne Sansa Daly is currently registered and licensed by the GMDC to practise medicine in Ghana?

2. If Dr Anne Sansa Daly has ever been registered with the GMDC in any capacity (e.g., temporary or permanent registration)?

3. If it is within the GMDC’s regulations for an individual not registered with the Council to present themselves publicly as a medical doctor or offer medical advice on public platforms within Ghana.

President John Dramani Mahama, in a letter addressed to the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, dated May 23, 2025, revoked the appointment of Anne Sansa Daly, to the board of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) on grounds of false pretense.

Anne Sansa Daly had claimed she was a medical doctor, but it later emerged that she was allegedly not a certified doctor.

However, no explanation was given in the letter of revocation of the appointment of Anne Sansa Daly, which was issued on behalf of the president by Dr Callistus Mahama, the Secretary to the President.

Glitch Africa addresses Ghanaian podcast controversy with promise of ‘cultural reset’

Former hosts of Rants, Bants and Confessions, Ama Burland and Gisela Amponsah Former hosts of Rants, Bants and Confessions, Ama Burland and Gisela Amponsah

In the wake of public criticism from former hosts of the popular Rants, Bants & Confessions (RBC) podcast, Glitch Africa Studios has issued a statement addressing tensions surrounding its Ghanaian operations, promising reforms and reaffirming its commitment to African storytellers.

The controversy erupted after several hosts from the first season of RBC voiced concerns on social media, citing feelings of neglect and mistreatment by the company following their tenure.

Their grievances included a perceived lack of support, inadequate communication, and a breakdown in relations over management decisions.

Responding in a press release titled “A Message to Our Ghanaian Audience, Our Community, and Our Former Hosts”, Glitch Africa acknowledged the pain expressed by former collaborators.

“We are fully aware that how people feel during and after their time working with us matters just as much as the final product,” the statement read.

“It is clear from recent statements that certain hosts did not feel adequately supported, defended, or cared for.”

While the company admitted to “strained” negotiations over a planned meet-and-greet event, it firmly denied allegations of any malicious intent, including accusations of using bloggers to attack former hosts.

“No bloggers or third parties were ever paid or instructed by Glitch Africa to attack or discredit anyone associated with our brand,” the studio clarified.

Gisela Amponsah

The statement also emphasised that all podcast hosts had editorial oversight, with access to content prior to release. In several cases, episodes were edited or withheld to prioritise the emotional well-being of those involved.

Yet beyond factual clarifications, the company expressed gratitude to its former hosts and pledged structural changes.

“This is not a PR cleanup. It’s a cultural reset,” the statement declared. “To our Ghanaian community: We hear you. To our former hosts: Thank you for your contributions and your honesty.”

Glitch Africa, which operates across Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and other African markets, says it will be reinforcing its “cross-country brand values” to ensure every host feels “seen, respected, and protected,” regardless of location.

The RBC podcast had been a breakout success for Glitch Africa, especially among young audiences, blending unfiltered storytelling with humour and social commentary.

Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, lawyer of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, better known as Chairman Wontumi, has indicated that the fate of his client will be determined today, June 2, 2025.

Chairman Wontumi was granted a bail of GH ¢50 million with two sureties on May 28, 2025, but his release was stalled despite meeting the bail conditions on May 30, because of a new legal application to be heard on June 2, 2025.

Heritage Bank is one of the banks collapsed by the NPP administration Heritage Bank is one of the banks collapsed by the NPP administration

In June last year, during his campaign for the 2024 election, John Dramani Mahama pledged that all banks that collapsed under the Akufo-Addo government would be returned to their original owners.

UT Bank and Capital Bank were the first to be taken over by GCB Bank through a purchase and assumption agreement.

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has promised that all the banks collapsed by the Akufo-Addo government under the ministerial leadership and supervision of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will be returned to their owners after an “unbiased assessment.”

From 2017 to 2020, the Bank of Ghana collapsed 10 banks owned by Ghanaian businesspeople.

UT Bank and Capital Bank were the first to be taken over by GCB Bank in a purchase and assumption agreement.

Seven others — The Sovereign Bank, The Beige Bank, Premium Bank, The Royal Bank, Heritage Bank, Construction Bank, and UniBank — had their licenses revoked and were placed under the Consolidated Bank Ghana.

Former presidential candidate Paa Kwesi Nduom’s GN Bank was also downgraded to a savings and loans firm and later collapsed.

As a result of the banking sector reforms, the Bank of Baroda voluntarily folded up and exited.

Additionally, six banks merged.

First Atlantic Merchant Bank Limited and Energy Commercial Bank merged into one; OmniBank Ghana Limited and Bank Sahel Sahara Ghana merged; and First National Bank and GHL Bank Limited also merged.

Ghana now has 23 functional universal banks.

Furthermore, 347 microfinance institutions, 39 finance houses, and 53 fund management companies were collapsed in the same financial sector clean-up exercise.

Urging the youth to vote out the Akufo-Addo government and elect him as the next president in the upcoming elections, Mr. Mahama, in a recent Facebook Live conversation, encouraged Ghanaians to “exercise your franchise by voting for me, John Mahama, on December 7th, and for the National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate in your constituency,” noting: “As your selfless, truthful, experienced, and visionary leader, I need your vote to reset Ghana. I assure you I will work with you to build a country of shared growth and prosperity.”

Explaining what he meant by resetting Ghana, Mr. Mahama stressed, “I will repair the dangerous damage to our country’s economy and people.”

He then promised, “Businessmen and women who have been given raw deals by government apparatchiks will have their say and can be assured of restoration.”

Specifically, Mr. Mahama indicated, “After a thorough and unbiased assessment, collapsed banks and financial institutions shall be restored.”

He also promised to “provide decent and well-paying jobs through my 24-hour economy initiative.”

“Let me be clear: I am utterly appalled and disappointed by the unprecedented unemployment rate we are seeing today,” Mr. Mahama emphasized.

To the youth, the NDC flagbearer said, “While I agree with your justifiable anger and disappointments, I urge you to keep hope alive. Have faith in God and the power of your thumb. Ghanaians are in search of hope, hope they can believe in! Hope with the assurance that Ghana will be reset onto the path of progress and prosperity.”

“Hope, knowing they can live in safe neighborhoods and earn a living if they study hard, work hard, and live as law-abiding citizens. This is what Ghanaians are yearning for, and this is precisely what the NDC and I are presenting to you in this election of 2024.”

Lissu appears in court with “No Reforms, No Election” slogan amid objection from prosecution

Opposition leader Tundu Lissu in court Opposition leader Tundu Lissu in court

The treason case against opposition leader Tundu Lissu took a dramatic turn at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday, June 2, 2025, as tensions flared between state prosecutors and the defense team.

Lissu, the National Chairman of Chadema, appeared for a mention hearing in a case where he faces two charges: treason and publishing false information online. Upon entering the courtroom, he shouted the slogan, “No reforms, no election,”—an act later described by the court as contemptuous.

Despite expectations that the matter would move swiftly—particularly because the Kisutu court is generally considered to lack jurisdiction over treason cases the prosecution requested an adjournment, citing incomplete investigations. They also argued that Lissu’s slogan constituted a violation of court decorum.

The defense team, comprising Advocates Mpale Mpoki, Dr Rugemeleza Nshala, Peter Kibatala, and others, firmly opposed the request. They contended that the prosecution had ample time to complete investigations and that continued delays were infringing on Lissu’s fundamental rights.

They emphasized that the nature of the charges limited Lissu’s ability to mount a meaningful defense.

Addressing the courtroom incident, the defense explained that Lissu had been escorted in at the same time as the magistrate, leaving him no opportunity to acknowledge his supporters in the gallery—a procedural misstep they said contributed to his frustration.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the presiding magistrate clarified that court proceedings officially commence once the judge enters the courtroom.

Minister of Communication unveils gov’t’s digital inclusion plan for PWDs

0

Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, has unveiled the government’s plan to promote digital inclusivity for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).

He acknowledged that both global and local digitalisation efforts often sideline individuals with impairments or difficulties, leaving many excluded from the digital space.

The Minister made the announcement at the grand finale of the “Tekyerma Pa” Hackathon 2025, held at the University of Ghana.

The landmark event, spearheaded by Professor Isaac Wiafe, Principal Investigator of the project, was dedicated to advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) for inclusive communication in Ghanaian languages, with a special focus on supporting individuals with speech impairments.

Four tertiary institutions and an industry team competed for honours.

  • “Kasa Noma” from the University of Environment and Sustainable Development took first place.

  • “Whisper Wave” from the industry secured second place.

  • “Twilight” from the University of Ghana placed third.

In Ghana, digital exclusion presents a major challenge for PWDs, hindering their full participation in an increasingly digital society. While the country continues to make strides in digital transformation, many PWDs remain on the wrong side of the digital divide.

To address this, the Minister announced that under the “One Million Coders” initiative, the government would ensure that at least 10 per cent of beneficiaries are persons with disabilities.

He added that this initiative would be complemented by the rollout of regional digital centres and zonal ICT innovation hubs to provide structured training for vulnerable groups, particularly women and PWDs.

“As new innovations emerge, players in the digital industry must ensure that inequality does not prevail,” he cautioned.

He emphasized that innovations like AI could either bridge the gap or deepen inequality, depending on how they are applied.

Commending the participants of the “Tekyerma Pa” Hackathon for their innovation in disability technology, the Minister said,
“Your tools may one day allow a child with cerebral palsy to speak to her classmates and family members in Nzema. Your tools may help an elderly man recovering from a stroke to express himself again with dignity in Ghana.”

Merge OSP, EOCO for greater efficiency – Adawudu suggests

0

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Legal and Communications Team, Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu, has proposed the merger of two key anti-corruption agencies, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO), to strengthen Ghana’s fight against corruption.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Monday, June 2, Adawudu argued that the duplication of roles and fragmentation of resources between the two institutions often hinders the effective investigation and prosecution of corruption cases.

“My personal view is that OSP and EOCO should be merged. OSP, we do not have so much, but EOCO is all over the country and has the resources,” he said.

He explained that by combining the nationwide reach and logistical resources of EOCO with the prosecutorial mandate of the OSP, Ghana would be better positioned to secure successful prosecutions and recover stolen assets.

“If you can put the same at which they do, and they collaborate, I think that we will see more effective prosecution and retrieval of some amount than having one single institution,” he stated.

Adawudu also criticised the current system where agencies pass cases between themselves due to overlapping or unclear jurisdiction.

“Now we come with this one saying, ‘This job is not within my confines; let me send it to another institution.’ When you put these two institutions together, I think that it will be more efficient,” he added.

Ga Mantse hails McDan’s ‘Unwavering Resilience’ as blueprint for Ghanaian business success

0

The Overlord of the Ga State, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the Ga Mantse, has publicly lauded the exceptional resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of Ghanaian business mogul Daniel McKorley, Executive Chairman of the McDan Group.

The King delivered the endorsement during his keynote address at the grand 20th Anniversary celebrations of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) School of Business in Kumasi on Monday.

Speaking to a distinguished audience comprising academia, industry leaders, traditional rulers, and students, the Ga Mantse highlighted McDan’s journey as a quintessential example of the tenacity required to thrive in Ghana’s dynamic, and often challenging, business landscape.

“Today, as we celebrate two decades of excellence in business education here at KNUST, we must look to the living examples that embody the very principles we teach,” stated the Ga Mantse. “In the story of McDan, we see the spirit of unwavering resilience. We see a Ghanaian who has faced storms, navigated complexities, and emerged stronger, building an empire that spans continents and industries.”

The King emphasized that McDan’s success – from its roots in logistics and shipping to its significant expansions into aviation (McDan Aviation), ports operations (McDan Ports), salt mining, and agro-processing – was not merely a result of opportunity, but of relentless perseverance and strategic adaptation.

“Resilience is not just about surviving hardship; it is about learning, innovating, and finding opportunity where others see obstacles. Dr. McKorley and the McDan Group exemplify this,” the Ga Mantse continued. “His ability to pivot, to invest boldly in Ghana even during uncertain times, and to create thousands of jobs for our youth, is a testament to a deeply rooted Ghanaian entrepreneurial spirit that we must all celebrate and emulate.”

The Ga Mantse connected McDan’s achievements directly to the mission of institutions like the KNUST School of Business. He urged the graduating students and future business leaders present to draw inspiration from such homegrown success stories, emphasizing the importance of integrity, local knowledge, and an unyielding commitment to national development alongside profit.

The recognition from one of Ghana’s most revered traditional leaders underscores McDan’s significant contribution to the nation’s economy and its status as a flagship Ghanaian multinational. Dr. McKorley, who was present at the event, received a standing ovation following the Ga Mantse’s remarks.

The KNUST School of Business 20th Anniversary celebrations focused on Building Capability and Resilience for sustainable Development.

We Can’t Skip Akon’s Contribution To Afrobeats – Sarkodie

0

Sarkodie

Rapper Sarkodie has praised Senegalese-American music icon, Akon, for his significant role in promoting Afrobeats on the global stage.

In a post on X on May 29, 2025, Sarkodie applauded Akon as one of the few international stars who, during the peak of his career, looked back to support African talent.

Big shouts to the legend, Akon, for what you did for Afrobeats!!! We can’t skip that in history,” Sarkodie wrote. “Few artists in their prime will look back and put their people on from the motherland! He did that in a big way!”

Sarkodie stressed that although Afrobeats has grown into a global powerhouse, Akon’s early efforts laid the groundwork for its success and shouldn’t be forgotten.

This comes shortly after Akon, in a recent interview reflected on his involvement in shaping Afrobeats. The “Lonely” hitmaker explained that after releasing his Freedom album in 2008, he turned his focus to Africa, especially Nigeria, where he began working with local talents.

“Wizkid was the first Nigerian artiste that we signed back in 2008,” Akon said. “We worked with him and Banky W. From there, we started developing artists like PSquare, D’banj and others.”

Akon also highlighted his work on the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and how that period marked the beginning of a strong connection between him and African music.

Sarkodie’s recognition of Akon is an acknowledgement of the cross-continental collaborations that have helped shape Afrobeats into the global phenomenon it is today.
