Former Executive Director of NSS, Osei Assibey Antwi is set to be charged by the State Former Executive Director of NSS, Osei Assibey Antwi is set to be charged by the State

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has shared new details in the unfolding National Service Authority (NSA) scandal, including the discovery of a GH¢189 million transfer into a Bank of Ghana account, of which GH¢80 million remains unaccounted for.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Monday July 28, 2025, Dr Ayine disclosed that the filing of charges in the case was scheduled for last week but had to be suspended after investigators uncovered fresh evidence of suspected financial misconduct.

“The National Service Authority scandal case was due to be filed last week when we stumbled upon further evidence of malfeasance involving an account at the Bank of Ghana, to which had been transferred an amount of One Hundred and Eighty-Nine Million Ghana Cedis (GH¢189,000,000.00),” the Attorney General stated.

He said investigations revealed that GH¢80 million of the transferred funds could not be traced.

Additionally, the AG mentioned that two cheques bearing the name and account details of the former Executive Director of the NSA, Osei Assibey Antwi, were discovered.

He noted that the cheques were used to withdraw a total of just under GH¢2 million from the said account.

“We found two cheques bearing the name and account details of the former Director-General, Mr. Osei Assibey, which had been used to withdraw funds totaling a little under Two Million Ghana Cedis (GH¢2m) from the said account,” Dr Ayine revealed.

He explained that due to the emergence of this new evidence, his office had decided to delay the formal filing of charges to allow time for further investigations and verification.

“We have therefore halted the filing of charges so as to await the receipt of the evidence from the relevant state agencies, including the Bank of Ghana, Ministry of Finance and the Controller and Accountant-General,” the Attorney-General said.

Thomas Partey’s ex-girlfriend and one of the women behind rape allegations

Bella (L) and Partey (R) during their relationship Bella (L) and Partey (R) during their relationship

Sara Bella, a Moroccan model and former partner of footballer Thomas Partey, has emerged as one of the women involved in the rape allegations brought against the Ghanaian international.

Bella, who was once publicly linked with the Arsenal midfielder, reportedly accused Partey of rape following the breakdown of their relationship.

Their romance, which began after she relocated to the United Kingdom for further studies, had appeared serious.

The pair were even said to be planning marriage, a plan Partey allegedly backed out of, sparking the fallout that would lead to the accusations.

In 2022, it came to light that multiple women had accused Partey of sexual misconduct.

While some of the identities were shielded from the public, Bella’s name circulated heavily in online circles and media speculation, particularly due to her previous public relationship with the midfielder.

Social media investigators and independent reports linked her to one of the cases, although official records did not name her directly.

Sources claimed Bella allegedly attempted to blackmail Partey after their failed engagement, which reportedly influenced his decision to convert to Islam and take the name “Yakubu”, a change he explained as motivated by love.

In an Instagram video with Ghanaian broadcaster Nana Aba Anamoah, Partey admitted jokingly, “I have a girl I love. I know my side chicks will leave me but it’s no problem.”

Raised Christian in eastern Ghana, Partey confirmed in early 2022 that he had embraced Islam, a decision largely attributed to his relationship with Bella.

But their fairytale romance ultimately gave way to legal turmoil.

As of July 2025, Partey has been formally charged by the UK’s Metropolitan Police with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault involving three women.

Two of those charges are related to one woman, three to a second, reportedly Sara Bella, and the remaining sexual assault charge involving a third woman.

The offences are alleged to have occurred between 2021 and 2022, during the peak of Partey’s time at Arsenal.

The midfielder, now 32, has denied all allegations and, according to his lawyer, “welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.”

Partey is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5, 2025.

Police probe viral video of school director flogging man, female student

0

Police have said they have taken an interest in the viral video recording showing a school director flogging a man and a female student, said to be his lover, after the director’s actions attracted backlash from social media users.

In the under-2-minute video seen by this reporter, students of Lira-based King James School of Nursing and Midwifery watched helplessly as their director whipped a man accused of having an affair with their colleague on February 22, 2025.

“The incident in question took place on the 22nd of February 2025, and was formally reported to police on the 26th of the same month by the victim, who is a resident of Apac District,” Superintendent of Police Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, said in a statement on July 28.

Mr Okema added that “following the report, the matter was thoroughly investigated under the relevant case reference at Lira City West Division Police, and the file was duly submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for independent review and guidance. The case remains under active management, and appropriate steps are being taken to ensure justice is served.”

The victim, who was subjected to humiliation and torture in broad daylight in front of hundreds of learners, is said to be a clinical officer working at Apac General Hospital in Apac District.

Friends said no sooner had the video of him being caned gone viral on the internet than the victim’s phone was switched off.

A source working at King James School of Nursing and Midwifery said the health worker entered into a relationship with the nursing student who had gone for a facility attachment at Apac General Hospital.

He said trouble started when the student’s father went to clear the daughter’s fee balance and was informed by the school authority that she had been taken to Apac hospital for a facility attachment.

Accordingly, the father travelled to Apac, about 60 kilometres from Lira City. Upon arrival at the government hospital, he never found his daughter. Later, he was told the student’s elder brother came to the school and took her back home for prayers.

He then travelled back to King James to make a follow-up since he did not have a son. He reportedly mounted pressure on the school administration to produce his daughter.

“This is always a good practice with parents, as always one would want to know where his or her child is upon always paying a huge amount of tuition fees,” the source told this publication on July 28, 2025.

“On reaching the school again, the father reported the disappearance of his daughter from the facility. Rumours started spreading that a student was being hidden around a nearby Omodo Trading Centre,” he added.

The school director, Mr Dickson Odongo, immediately made a follow-up. Unfortunately, the student and the man (clinical officer) were found in a house at Omodo Trading Centre, living together as husband and wife.

He was taken to school and beaten in front of hundreds of learners in a desperate attempt to send a clear message that his learning institution is not a dating ground an academic institution.

According to another source who preferred not to be named since the issue is still a subject of police investigation, such elopement ruins the affected students’ future.

“The director’s act may be criticised by many, but also put yourself in the position of the parent whose daughter’s future is being ruined by a married men,” said the source.

“Also put yourself in the shoes of the school director whose school name may be tarnished by and the public then speaks negatively about the school, much as handling the law in one’s hand is not allowed. I’m not supporting the act of beating that married man.”

Nonetheless, after realising that he had committed an offence of assault, Mr Odongo reportedly followed the nurse, begged for forgiveness and agreed to offer him some money in the form of compensation.

However, down the road, the director reportedly failed to fulfill his obligation to the fullest, prompting the victim to release the video, which has gone viral.

The school director acknowledged he actually “disciplined” a man who wanted to bring shame to his school.

“That incident happened in February this year, and it was fully settled. I was so shocked to see the video again on various social media platforms yesterday (July 27). I do not know the motive behind it. I cannot tell you the details of the whole thing because the police are handling the matter,” Mr Odongo told this publication on the phone.

SSP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, said: “Surprisingly, that incident happened some five months ago. Whatever happened and how it was handled never came to my desk.”

The police spokesperson said he was equally interested in the story.

“It is so heartbreaking. You can’t beat a fellow man like that. But anyway, I’m following it up with the regional CID,” he said.

Major General (Rtd) Kahinda Otafire, the Minister of Internal Affairs, previously directed the Inspector General of Police to ensure the police arrest and prosecute any teacher or school authority engaged in corporal punishment and any other forms of assault on learners.

In a letter dated May 2025, the minister said the Ministry of Education and Sports should devise other methods of enforcing discipline other than physical assault.

“Despite the government banning caning of learners in schools, we continue to receive alarming reports about administration of corporal punishment in schools, to the extent that some learners are injured but fear reporting such incidents,” Maj Gen Otafire said in a letter dated May 2025.

“I want to take this opportunity to warn all and sundry that corporal punishment is assault and a criminal offence punishable by law.”

Addressing journalists in Kampala, police spokesperson, Mr Kituuma Rusoke, on Monday, July 28, said they had taken an interest in the video, saying the perpetrator would be arrested for assault.

Prophet who predicted Shatta Wale’s death apologizes after arrest

0

Prophet and counsellor D.Y. Donkoh has issued a public apology following his arrest over a prophecy in which he predicted the death of dancehall artiste Shatta Wale.

Donkoh was picked up by police at his residence on the night of Friday, July 25, 2025, after a video of his prophecy—shared widely across social media—sparked public fear and concern.

In the video, the self-proclaimed man of God claimed he had seen a vision in which Shatta Wale was fatally shot in a two-part attack carried out by unknown assailants.

The prophecy triggered a social media uproar and a strong reaction from Shatta Wale, who expressed trauma and outrage over the public revelation. The artiste accused the prophet of using fear to gain attention and demanded his arrest, warning of further action if authorities failed to intervene.

Police swiftly responded and arrested Donkoh later that same day.

In his official apology, Counsellor Donkoh said he believed the prophecy was divinely inspired but stressed that he never intended to cause panic or distress.

“I deeply regret the trauma my message may have caused Shatta Wale and his team. Going forward, I will exercise greater spiritual discretion and sensitivity in the delivery of any such messages,” he said.

He acknowledged the emotional impact of the prophecy and pledged to handle such matters more responsibly in the future.

Gorgeous and Fascinating Styles for Church and Special Occasions

0

Dressing for church or special occasions is more than just putting on clothes—it’s a way of expressing reverence, elegance, and personal style. Whether attending Sunday service, a wedding, christening, or another formal gathering, choosing the right outfit requires a thoughtful blend of modesty, beauty, and sophistication.

One of the most popular choices for women attending church and formal events is the midi or maxi dress. These dresses come in a variety of fabrics such as chiffon, lace, satin, or Ankara prints, depending on the occasion. For church, styles that cover the shoulders and reach below the knee are typically preferred, projecting grace and respect. For weddings or galas, more embellished designs with beading or embroidery add a touch of glamour without compromising decency.

A well-matched skirt and blouse can create a polished and classy look. Pencil skirts, A-line cuts, and pleated styles paired with silk or lace blouses offer versatility and charm. Colors like ivory, burgundy, navy blue, or soft pastels exude calm elegance, making them perfect for church services or daytime events.

Accessories elevate any outfit. Wide-brimmed hats, elegant fascinators, or intricately tied headwraps (like the African gele) make bold yet tasteful statements. Pearl or gold jewelry, structured handbags, and modest heels or stylish flats complete the ensemble without overshadowing the outfit.

For men, well-tailored suits in classic shades such as charcoal, navy, or beige remain a staple for both church and special occasions. In many cultures, traditional garments like the Agbada, Dashiki, or Kaftan are also worn, reflecting heritage and honor. Pairing these with leather shoes and a clean haircut ensures a refined appearance.

Ultimately, style for church and special occasions is about respect, beauty, and self-expression. With the right attire, anyone can make a lasting impression while honoring the significance of the gathering.

Audit Service denies apologising over GH¢138.9bn debt overstatement

0

The Audit Service has denied issuing any apology for allegedly overstating Ghana’s total public debt by GH¢138.91 billion in its 2024 Auditor-General’s report.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 24, 2025, the Service said its attention had been drawn to a publication by Ghana Today circulating on social media, which falsely claimed: “We overstated Ghana’s total public debt by GH¢138.9 billion in our 2024 report. We apologise for this oversight – Auditor-General.”

According to the Audit Service, the publication misrepresents a section of the Auditor-General’s 2024 Report on the Public Accounts of Ghana, specifically pages 4 to 5 (paragraphs 13–18), which highlights discrepancies in public debt figures reported by the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) and the Ministry of Finance.

“The Office of the Auditor-General states that there has not been any such apology or statement by the Office regarding information published in our reports,” the statement said.

The report in question had noted an overstatement of public debt amounting to GH¢138.91 billion. It cited that the Whole of Government Accounts recorded total public debt of GH¢1,087.61 billion, whereas records from the Ministry of Finance indicated a lower figure of GH¢1,473.72 billion—resulting in the reported overstatement.

However, the Audit Service emphasised that this was part of its regular audit findings and not an error by the Auditor-General that warranted an apology.

“The information stated by Ghana Today is inaccurate and should be viewed by all well-meaning Ghanaians and stakeholders as mischievous,” the statement concluded.

The statement urged all individuals intending to republish the reports to exercise due diligence and ensure they present verified facts and figures before making any publication.

“We urge all persons who intend to make a re-publication of our reports to be meticulous and serve their clients with verified facts and figures before any publication.

“Finally, we remind the general public that all reports of the Auditor-General have been duly submitted to Parliament in accordance with Article 187 (5) of the 1992 Constitution and published on the website of Audit Service (www.auditgov.gh).”

Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament, Abena Osei-Asare, on July 22, described the recent GH¢138.91 billion overstatement in Ghana’s public debt as revealed in the 2024 Audit Report as “no ordinary mistake” that warrants urgent scrutiny.

According to the report, while the Controller and Accountant-General reported Ghana’s total public debt as GH¢876.01 billion, the Ministry of Finance recorded a significantly lower figure of GH¢737.17 billion.

GH¢ 0.5 billion recovered in the ongoing UniBank case – Attorney General

0

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has revealed that GH¢ 0.5 billion has so far been recovered in the UniBank criminal case.

He said the money forms part of GH¢ 1.2 billion being pursued from individuals who directly benefited from funds unlawfully taken from the bank.

Dr. Ayine disclosed that the accused persons have provided landed properties worth GH¢ 824 million to UniBank as part of efforts to recover the full amount.

He explained that the accused persons will take responsibility for any shortfall if the sale of the properties does not raise enough money.

“The recovery of the remaining GH¢ 0.7 billion and the sale of the properties are expected to be completed within 18 months,” he said.

According to the Attorney General, although it would have been ideal for the accused to pay the full amount in cash, that was not a realistic option during the negotiations.

The UniBank case is part of the government’s efforts to hold people accountable for the collapse of some banks during the banking sector clean-up.

Ghanaian entertainment pundit Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo has said Daddy Lumba was a “musical god”.

Speaking on United Showbiz on July 27, 2025, Arnold mentioned that Daddy Lumba was one of the artistes who got a lot of respect and love from the young ones.

“Daddy Lumba was one of the artistes who got a lot of respect among the young ones. He got lots of love among the ones. Most often than not, on his birthday, you will see the likes of Sarkodie and few people post him. I don’t know any musician who (sic)” Arnold said.

He continued, “The kind of love that was shown to him when he was alive, I will not also agree if someone says we didn’t celebrate him when he was alive. He was one of the people that was celebrated every chance we got because we realised the kind of clout and status he was having.”

Arnold further stated that Daddy Lumba’s status is beyond legendary.

“His status is not legendary; it’s beyond legendary. He was a god and that’s how big he was. He left a huge legacy for us, so we should limit the comparison between Daddy Lumba and Michael Jackson.”

He added that Daddy Lumba’s lyrical prowess was beyond the world.

“Daddy Lumba’s lyrical prowess was on top of the world and his ability to actually write and coin words was something else. Sometimes when you listen to his music, you will need him to come explain the lyrics. That’s how weird his personality was in terms of his song writing skills.”

Gov’t to replace Ghana School of Law admissions with National Bar Exam

0

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has announced a sweeping reform to Ghana’s legal education system that would abolish the current Ghana School of Law admissions structure and replace it with a national bar examination.

The proposed changes, outlined during the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, July 28, 2025, are part of a new legal education bill expected to be submitted to Cabinet in August.

The reforms aim to decentralise professional legal training and expand access to the bar for all qualified LLB graduates.

Under the new model, students who obtain LLB degrees from accredited universities will undertake a one-year Bar Practice Programme at their respective institutions. Upon completion, they will sit for a standardised national bar exam to qualify for legal practice.

“The bill will abolish the Ghana School of Law system,” Dr. Ayine stated, adding “Universities will be allowed to provide practical legal education internally, and successful students will write a national bar exam, just like what is done by the Institute of Chartered Accountants.”

The announcement comes amid long-standing criticism of the existing centralised system, which has limited access to the legal profession. Thousands of law graduates from both public and private universities have found themselves unable to gain admission to the Ghana School of Law, despite having qualifying degrees.

Dr. Ayine said the proposed reforms are aimed at moving the system from one of exclusion to one of inclusion.

“We are shifting from exclusion to inclusion. Our aim is to ensure that all qualified LLB holders have a clear and merit-based path to becoming lawyers,” he said.

He also revealed that the final draft of the legal education bill had been submitted to his deputy, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, for review on Sunday, July 27, ahead of the formal announcement.

He told the court that anytime he went to the bank on the instructions of the accused persons, the bank staff gave him a receipt to write his name, telephone number, and append his signature.

Anane Dekpey also told the court that he only sent the money he withdrew from the bank to either Adu Boahene or Mildred Donkor, and not to the second accused in the case, Adu Boahene’s wife, Angela Adjei Boateng.

“I normally took instructions from Mildred Donkor (former relationship officer of UMB Bank), with the envelope sealed, to the UMB Bank, Labone.

“Then I gave it to one of the employees and waited until the money was ready, then I picked it up,” the witness is quoted to have said.

The Office of the Attorney General slapped Kwabena Adu Boahene; his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng; their associate, Mildred Boateng; and a company jointly owned by Adu Boahene and his wife, Advantage Solutions Limited, with 11 charges for allegedly transferring GH¢49 million (approximately $7 million) from the bureau’s account to his personal account.

Addressing the press on Monday, March 24, 2025, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine stated that Adu Boahene was implicated in the unauthorised transfer of $7 million, originally allocated for cybersecurity infrastructure, into his private accounts.

“In his capacity as Director of the National Signals Bureau, Adu Boahene, on January 30, 2020, signed a contract on behalf of the Government of Ghana and the National Security on the one hand, and on the other hand, an Israeli company named RLC Holdings Limited. The contract was for the purchase of a cyber defense system software at a price of $7 million,” the Attorney General said.

Government’s GH¢500m Nestlé share transfer to NIB – What it means for the SOE

0

Government to list the National Investment Bank on the GSE Government to list the National Investment Bank on the GSE

On July 24, 2025, during the Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament, the Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, announced the transfer of GH¢500 million worth of government shares in Nestlé Ghana Limited to the National Investment Bank (NIB).

According to him, the move is part of a bold and comprehensive strategy to recapitalise the struggling state-owned bank and reposition it for long-term profitability and national development.

This GhanaWeb Business article sheds more light on the government’s decision to transfer its Nestlé shares to NIB.

Government’s capitalisation plan

The government’s capitalisation efforts form part of a broader strategy to rescue NIB from collapse and restore the bank’s financial stability.

The total support package for NIB includes:

• GH¢450 million in cash injection

• GH¢1.5 billion in marketable government bonds

• GH¢500 million equity stake in Nestlé Ghana

These combined interventions have had a significant impact. According to Dr Forson, the government’s actions have preserved GH¢6.4 billion in depositors’ funds and safeguarded over 900 direct jobs at the bank.

Details of the Injected Amount

Prior to the intervention, NIB was in a dire financial state. As of the end of 2024, its Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR), a key measure of a bank’s financial health, stood at –53.13%.

However, by May 2025, following the capital and asset injection, the CAR had improved dramatically to +23%, exceeding the Bank of Ghana’s regulatory benchmark.

This recovery indicates that the bank is now solvent and better positioned to operate sustainably within Ghana’s financial sector.

Government’s bigger picture

The government’s vision for NIB extends beyond short-term solvency. Its aim is to reposition the bank as a robust development finance institution capable of supporting Ghana’s industrialisation and agricultural transformation.

With a revitalised balance sheet and strong capital base, NIB is expected to provide long-term credit to strategic sectors of the economy, playing a pivotal role in national development.

This marks a shift from the conventional commercial banking model and aligns NIB with development finance institutions globally, which support medium- to large-scale projects with long-term economic impact.

Impact of the transfer

With NIB now fully capitalised, the bank has the potential to be listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE).

A public listing would enable NIB to benefit from:

• Greater transparency

• Improved governance structures

• Broader ownership by institutional investors and ordinary Ghanaians

The planned listing is expected to strengthen investor confidence in state-owned enterprises, deepen Ghana’s capital market, and create opportunities for Ghanaians to participate in the ownership of a revitalised development bank.

Conclusion

The government’s decision to transfer GH¢500 million in Nestlé Ghana shares to NIB is a strategic move aimed at securing both immediate financial stability and long-term economic transformation.

By restoring the financial health of a key state-owned bank, preparing it for a public listing, and repositioning it to support Ghana’s development agenda, the government is signaling a new era in the management of public financial institutions.

This intervention also reflects a shift toward leveraging capital markets to empower state enterprises, expand access to finance, and foster inclusive economic growth.

How Dr Kwame Nkrumah transformed Black Stars to win two AFCON titles

0

Dr Kwame Nkrumah is Ghana's first president Dr Kwame Nkrumah is Ghana’s first president

The Black Stars’ early glory days remain an integral part of Ghana’s football history and a source of nostalgia for fans.

Ghana’s Black Stars ruled African football in the 1960s, winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 1963 and 1965.

However, since then, the team has struggled to match that level of success in the tournament.

The success they chalked wasn’t by chance. Kwame Nkrumah’s strategic efforts and his Real Republicans football club, despite controversies, contributed significantly to the team’s achievements.

Dr Kwame Nkrumah envisioned football as a Tool for Nation-Building and Pan-Africanism.

Kwame Nkrumah recognised football’s potential as a unifying force, national pride symbol, and platform for his Pan-African ideals.

He viewed the Black Stars as Ghana and Africa’s ambassadors, highlighting Ghana’s capabilities to the world.

This led to major investment in sports. The Central Organisation for Sports (COS) was created, with influential Ohene Djan at the helm.

In 1961, Nkrumah and Ohene Djan created Real Republicans FC, Ghana’s super-team. The club was formed by drafting two top players from each existing club in Ghana’s top league, essentially creating a “dream team” or “Osagyefo’s Own Club” (OOC).

Nkrumah envisioned a “model club” that would set the standard for Ghanaian football, offer top-notch training, and provide a core of talented players for the Black Stars.

Inspired by clubs like Real Madrid, he aimed to create a dominant team that would elevate Ghanaian football.

Nkrumah formed the Real Republicans to break down ethnic and regional loyalties in football, aiming to create a unified national team and club that transcended tribal divisions. By assembling top players from all clubs, he sought to forge a national sporting identity.

This move challenged the localised identities of clubs like Kotoko and Hearts, which resented the Republicans for poaching their beloved stars and disrupting their ethnic and regional ties.

This is where the direct link to the Black Stars’ early success became clear. The Real Republicans formed the core of the national team, with a significant majority – often 8 or more – of the starting lineup coming directly from the Republicans.

The Black Stars got unmatched resources, top coaching, and pro conditions (jobs, housing, steady pay) thanks to state support.

Dr Nkrumah heavily backed them, and they felt honoured to play for Ghana. Constant training together helped them develop a strong team with dynamic telepathy on the field.

This professional setup and regular training gave Ghana a big edge over other African nations, whose national teams were often put together last-minute from league players.

Nkrumah went all out to help Ghana win. When he was overthrown, the team’s win rate noticeably dropped.

Minority dismisses Ato Forson’s claim on road project funds as false

0

The Minority in Parliament has dismissed as “false and misleading” recent claims by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson that the previous government secured loans for road projects such as Ofankor–Nsawam and Suame Interchange but used the funds elsewhere.

According to the caucus, the $750 million Afreximbbank facility obtained in 2022 was transparently approved and earmarked for critical national infrastructure.

In a statement issued by MP Kennedy Osei Nyarko, the group clarified that the facility was designed to fund several major road projects, including the Flowerpot Interchange, Borteyman dualisation, and key bypasses along the Accra–Kumasi corridor. “It was a programme-based facility with phased disbursements tied to progress,” he said.

He added that the arrangement included counterpart funding from the government, with project milestones clearly defined.

“To now suggest that the money was diverted is not only disingenuous — it is an attempt to rewrite the record for political gain,” Mr. Nyarko said. “Let’s speak facts. Let’s be truthful to Ghanaians.”

The Minority insists that delays in project execution are due not to misallocation, but to the current administration’s failure to honour payment obligations.

They argue that this has led to stalled works, eroded contractor confidence, and rising delayed-payment claims that may inflate costs further.

Calling for an end to political blame games, the Minority urged government to refocus on completing the projects.

“Instead of politicising the past, they should focus on delivering the roads Ghanaians were promised,” Mr. Nyarko said. “The facts are clear. The responsibility is theirs.”

Machete-Wielding Galamsey Suspects Clash With Police

Suspects in police custody

Twenty-seven (27) suspects have been arrested in a police operation at Ankaase Gyadam near Asamang Tamfoe in the Eastern Region after allegedly attacking officers with machetes and other dangerous weapons. The suspects were engaged in illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, at multiple sites in the area.

Police seized equipment such as 11 excavators, 1 bulldozer, 1 pick loader, water pumping machines, mining tools, 3 saloon cars, 1 Mitsubishi pickup truck, and 1 pump-action shotgun.

The operation, conducted on Friday, July 25, 2025, was part of the continued nationwide effort to combat galamsey activities that pose a threat to the country’s environment and natural resources.
Police sources indicate that the suspects were caught in the act of illegal mining at various locations in the vicinity. Nevertheless, the operation faced some opposition. Certain people allegedly tried to hinder the arrests, assaulting officers with machetes and various weapons.

The police, demonstrating professionalism and restraint, detained the assailants without causing harm to any law enforcement officer. Alongside the arrests, authorities confiscated a considerable stockpile of tools thought to be utilised in unlawful mining activities.

All evidence is presently maintained in safe custody as part of the continuing inquiry. The individuals in question are under police detention and are cooperating with ongoing investigations. Officials have stressed their dedication to eliminating illegal mining, especially in areas where these operations are escalating despite government alerts.

“Beige Bank Offered GH¢10m, I Refused, Now State Gets Nothing” – AG Regrets Missed Deal

0

The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has revealed that the state missed out on recovering GH¢10 million in the Beige Bank case after rejecting a settlement offer from the accused as per reports from ModernGhana.

According to Dr. Ayine, lawyers for Michael Nyinaku, the former CEO of the defunct Beige Bank, proposed a payment of GH¢10 million during the trial, which he turned down, hoping for a full conviction and asset recovery.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 28, Dr. Ayine explained that the recent ruling by the Court of Appeal, which acquitted Nyinaku, has left the state with no financial gains.

“Had we accepted the GH¢10 million offer, at least something would have been recovered,” he said.

The Court of Appeal, in a unanimous decision delivered on July 25, acquitted Nyinaku of all criminal charges.

The panel, led by Justice Emmanuel Ankamah and supported by Justices Dr. Ernest Owusu Dapaah and Kofi Akrowiah, dismissed charges of stealing, fraudulent breach of trust, and money laundering.

The court ruled that the prosecution had failed to meet the legal threshold for conviction, finding no sufficient evidence to prove dishonesty or criminal intent behind Nyinaku’s actions.

Nyinaku was accused of unlawfully moving over GH¢1 billion from depositors’ and institutional accounts into firms linked to The Beige Group, a company he founded.

He had always maintained his innocence, insisting that the transfers were legitimate and backed by documentation.

With the acquittal, Nyinaku exits a lengthy legal ordeal that began in 2018 when Beige Bank’s license was revoked as part of a financial sector clean-up.

Mixed reactions greet Ato Forson’s claim of falling food prices

0

Ghanaians are expressing mixed reactions to the assertion by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson that food prices are declining.

In the mid-year budget review presented last Thursday, the Minister highlighted reductions in the cost of major staples like maize and onions.

While some acknowledge marginal declines in select food items, many say the overall cost of feeding their families remains high and argue the government’s figures do not reflect their day-to-day realities in the marketplace.

“I haven’t seen any reduction in food prices. Kokonte has become expensive. GHȼ5 gets you very little now,” said Mary Addy, a consumer interviewed by Citi Business News.

Others, like Georgina Nkansah, questioned the selective focus of the Minister’s data, stating, “GHȼ1,000 can’t buy what it used to. Now it takes more than GHȼ2,000 to stock a household.”

However, some traders and consumers admit that prices of specific items like rice, oil, and maize have eased.

“A 5kg bag of rice now sells for GHȼ80 instead of GHȼ120. That’s progress,” said Beatrice Atswei Adjetey, while maize sellers at Kaneshie Market confirmed further price declines ahead of the harvest season.

A sack of maize that cost GH¢1,600 in January now sells for about GH¢1,300 and could fall further with the arrival of new stock.

But traders say low consumer demand remains a concern.

“Prices are fair, but there’s no money in circulation,” noted Naa Odey, Deputy Queen-mother of maize sellers at Kaneshie.

The kokonte market tells a similar story.

Though prices have dropped slightly, transportation remains a major cost driver. “We’re urging government to reduce fuel prices to ease transport burdens,” said kokonte seller Mary Quaicoe.

Palm fruit and onions have also seen price drops – but traders attribute this more to seasonal harvests than economic policy.

“Palm fruit is now GHȼ30–GHȼ35 per olonka, down from GHȼ40, but that’s normal during this season,” said Jane Annan, a palm fruit seller.

At Agbogbloshie, onion prices are down to GHȼ70 per paint bucket, with bulk baskets selling for GHȼ250–GHȼ270.

“The rest is sold to customers buying in smaller quantities like GHȼ10 and GHȼ5,” Abigail Frimpong, an onion seller added.

While the Finance Minister remains optimistic about the trend, many market observers believe sustained price reductions will require policy support for improved food transportation, lower fuel costs and better access to credit for traders.

“I have not been well, and the reason is that I had to undergo surgery on my arm again. You all saw that it got to a point where I was struggling a lot. Before I could finish shooting McBrown’s kitchen, I had taken a lot of painkillers.

“Until you go through a surgery like mine, you can’t understand my feelings and the pain I have been through. This time around, I have been advised by my doctors and loved ones to rest so that the wounds heal,” she said.

Nana Ama McBrown also pleaded with fans to remember her in prayers as she undergoes her healing process.

“I am home and going through the process of healing…What I am going to say is that I need your prayers, so my arm won’t break again because I am tired,” she added.

Mahama unveils 11 Farmer Service Centres to boost Agribusiness

0

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the establishment of 11 new Farmer Service Centres as part of a nationwide initiative to modernise agriculture and improve access for smallholder farmers.

The focus on mechanisation, according to the president, is part of a broader strategy to strengthen agribusiness, boost productivity, and support Ghana’s 24-hour economy vision through targeted public investment and industrial policy.

Speaking at the National Agribusiness Dialogue on Monday, July 28, 2025, under the theme “Resetting Agribusiness for Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Growth,” President Mahama revealed that the Ministry of Finance has approved funding for the first phase of the rollout under the government’s Big Push agenda.

“As part of the Big Push, the finance minister has approved funds to be released for 11 out of 50 farmers’ service centres to be located in farming zones across the country,” he said.

The centres will house tractors and other equipment that will be used to provide mechanisation services directly to farmers within their catchment areas.

“These tractors and equipment will not be sold to farmers. They will be stationed at strategic farmer service centres to provide mechanisation support. What farmers really need is not to own tractors and combine harvesters, but access to the services they provide,” President Mahama explained.

Farmers will be required to register at their nearest centre and will be able to request services during the farming season without the burden of owning and maintaining expensive machinery. Agencies with the technical capacity to maintain the equipment will be engaged to operate the centres and ensure service delivery.

In addition to the mechanisation initiative, President Mahama also announced plans to promote Made-in-Ghana products through public procurement.

“The government is going to give priority to products manufactured in Ghana. As I speak, the 24-hour economy secretariat is compiling a comprehensive list of Ghanaian-made goods, including agro-processed products. Since the government is the biggest spender in the economy, these products will be prioritised in procurement,” he added.

Attorney-General cites GH¢80m mystery in BoG account for delay in charges

0

Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has explained the government’s delay in filing charges in the National Service Secretariat (NSS) scandal, citing the emergence of significant new financial evidence.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at Jubilee House on Monday, 28th July, Dr Ayine disclosed that the expected legal action was put on hold after investigators uncovered fresh evidence of financial malfeasance involving a Bank of Ghana (BoG) account.

BoG Governor highlights potential risk to inflation outlook

0

Dr. Asiama, BoG Governor

The Governor of Bank of Ghana (BoG) Dr. Johnson Asiama has expressed concerns about the impact of exchange rate volatility and taxes in the Mid-Year Review on pricing behaviour.

He stated that the development “can cause a shift in inflation expectations”.

He has encouraged the Monetary Policy Committee members of the Bank of Ghanan to maintain a strong focus on the forward-looking risk and policy tradeoffs and the need to provide credible guidance to the market.

Dr. Asiama made the statements in his opening remarks at the committee meeting at the Bank of Ghana Head office in Accra today, July 28, 2025.

BoG MPC Meeting

Current economic developments

The Governor reminded the members that the biggest question is whether “current macroeconomic configuration warrants a recalibration of our monetary policy stance”

“With inflation expectations more firmly anchored, external buffers significantly strengthened, and public confidence improving, we must consider how best to support the recovery without compromising the hard-won gains in stability”, he added.

On the fiscal front, the Governor admitted that there has been significant progress.

BoG data

Ghana has a primary surplus of 1.1 percent of GDP well above the 0.4 percent target.

There is a reduction in the overall fiscal deficit to 0.7 percent of GDP, and actual expenditures coming in 14.3 percent below target.

Ghana has recorded a rare 15.6 percent reduction in public debt stock in the first half of the year, bringing the debt-to-GDP ratio down to 43.8 percent.

According to Dr. Asiama, “these outcomes signal a credible path to debt sustainability and macroeconomic stability”.

Attorney General Dr Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine (L) says Chairman Wontumi will be charged soon Attorney General Dr Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine (L) says Chairman Wontumi will be charged soon

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice has disclosed that all is set for the prosecution of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, who is the subject of investigations by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

Speaking at the Office of the President’s Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 28, 2025, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine disclosed that both the CID and EOCO have completed their investigations involving Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alias Chairman Wontumi.

He indicated that his office has drafted the charges against Chairman Wontumi and the other accused persons in the investigations and has sent them for review to the relevant offices before the cases are sent to court.

“The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has completed investigations in respect of Chairman Wontumi and the former National Buffer Stock Company CEO, Mr Abdul Wahab Hanan, and their accomplices.

“The results of both investigations will be announced very soon. The Police CID have also completed a docket on the Akonta Mining case and submitted same to my office,” he said.

He added, “We have prepared charges and sent them back to the Police CID for the suspects to be formally charged before their arraignment in court in the coming days. Ladies and gentlemen of the media, my fellow countrymen and women, in conclusion.”

The CID is investigating Wontumi over allegations that his company, Akonta Mining Limited, was “undertaking mining operations without a licence, polluting water bodies, and entering a forest reserve without authorisation.”

EOCO also arrested and detained Wontumi for several days before releasing him on a bail of GH¢50 million. Even though EOCO did not state why it arrested Wontumi, the Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice said he (Wontumi) is under investigation for multiple criminal offences.

These include fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering. In a statement posted on social media on Thursday, May 29, 2025, Dr Justice Srem Sai revealed that Wontumi, who has been in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) since Tuesday, is also implicated in a second strand of investigation linked to a broader international organised crime scheme.

The Deputy Attorney General emphasised that EOCO is collaborating closely with international law enforcement partners to probe this complex network of alleged criminal activities.

BoG Governor urges MPC to support recovery without undermining economic gains

0

Dr Johnson Asiama is the Governor of the Bank of Ghana Dr Johnson Asiama is the Governor of the Bank of Ghana

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, has called on the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to make decisions that support Ghana’s ongoing economic recovery without reversing the progress achieved so far.

Speaking at the MPC meeting held at the Bank’s Head Office in Accra on July 28, he said the committee should assess whether current economic conditions warrant any shift in policy direction.

Dr Asiama noted that inflation expectations are now better anchored, the country’s foreign reserves have improved, and overall confidence in the economy remains strong.

He emphasised that monetary policy decisions must safeguard these gains while facilitating growth.

“Our mandate requires a balanced decision that reinforces stability while enabling sustainable growth,” he said.

The Governor also warned of ongoing challenges that should not be overlooked.

These include the 2025 Budget, which signals the government’s strong commitment to fiscal consolidation, and the lingering impact of the 7.9% budget deficit recorded in 2024.

Dr Asiama pointed out that, despite the progress made, liquidity conditions remain tight, limiting the availability of credit to businesses and households.

“Liquidity conditions are still tight, and we must remain attentive to the pace and breadth of policy transmission, particularly to credit channels and the productive sectors,” he stated.

He urged MPC members to stay alert and consider the broader implications of their decisions, not only on inflation and interest rates but also on the real economy, especially sectors that drive growth and job creation.

Expand Cedi-only payment directive to all sectors – Adomako-Mensah to gov’t

0

Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has called on the government to expand its newly announced cedi-only payment directive beyond just contractor payments, urging broader enforcement across multiple sectors of the economy.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, July 28, the MP welcomed the move by the Finance Ministry to restrict government contracts to the use of the Ghana cedi, regardless of the funding source. He believes this policy, if broadened, could significantly strengthen the local currency.

“I don’t have any problem with that. Some transactions can be in dollars, but once you are giving a contract to a Ghanaian contractor, it should be in cedis. Most of the governments have fallen short of that, so I am happy they have decided to pay contractors in cedis,” he stated.

The directive was announced by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review presentation in Parliament. He explained that the goal was to reinforce the use of the Ghana cedi in public transactions and curb the growing trend of dollarisation in the economy.

Adomako-Mensah believes the policy should not stop with contractors, suggesting that goods and services across various industries should be priced and transacted in Ghana cedis.

“I think that directive aims to ensure that we do a lot more transactions with our legal tender, which is the Ghana cedi. I think the government should even go further. Maybe the directive should permeate a lot more sectors within the economy.

“A lot of the things should be quoted in the Ghana cedi just to help strengthen our currency. I don’t have any problem with that at all,” he added.

Eight suspects seek plea bargains in National Service Scandal

0

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has disclosed that eight individuals—among them three former officers of the National Service Authority (NSA)—have approached his office to negotiate plea bargains in connection with the ongoing financial scandal at the National Service Scheme (NSS).

Providing an update at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 28, Dr. Ayine revealed that the filing of formal charges has been temporarily delayed following the discovery of fresh evidence pointing to financial irregularities linked to an account at the Bank of Ghana associated with former NSA Director-General, Mr. Osei Assibey.

According to the Attorney-General, investigations revealed that GH¢189 million had been transferred into the account, but GH¢80 million of that sum remains unaccounted for. In addition, two cheques bearing Mr. Assibey’s name and account details were allegedly used to withdraw close to GH¢2 million.

“The National Service Authority scandal case was due to be filed last week. However, we stumbled upon evidence of malfeasance involving an account at the Bank of Ghana.

“Out of the GH¢189 million transferred, GH¢80 million cannot be traced. Two cheques linked to the former Director-General were used to withdraw just under GH¢2 million,” Dr. Ayine stated.

As a result of these findings, the Attorney-General’s Office is postponing the filing of charges as it awaits additional documentation from the Bank of Ghana, the Ministry of Finance, and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department.

Dr. Ayine also confirmed that eight suspects, including three former NSA officials, have reached out to his office to negotiate plea deals.

He noted that some of the implicated individuals have expressed willingness to testify against their co-accused, while several vendors and service providers involved in the scheme are reportedly prepared to act as prosecution witnesses.

The Attorney-General reaffirmed his office’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the handling of the case.

“No individual found culpable will be shielded from accountability,” he assured.

I miss my hair - Timi Dakolo says as he reveals his hair to his family after cutting his long dreads.

Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo has chopped off his dreadlocks and shared the heartwarming moment his family saw his new look for the first time.

In a video posted online, Timi walked into the house to a chorus of excitement from his wife and children. His wife couldn’t stop smiling as she admired his fresh, low-cut look, telling him it suited him. Timi, however, playfully said he looked like someone who had just finished writing WAEC.

While one of his daughters didn’t seem too pleased with the new hairstyle—saying she didn’t like either the old or new look—his son was quick to praise it, saying the new cut looked better.

The singer also said in the video, “I miss my hair,” referring to his dreads.

Ghana Tenant Union calls for scrapping of ‘incompetent’ Rent Control Department

Ghana Tenant Union says the Rent Control Department is ineffective and incompetent Ghana Tenant Union says the Rent Control Department is ineffective and incompetent

Ghana Tenant Union has called for the complete dissolution of the Rent Control Department, describing it as ineffective, incompetent, and a waste of public resources.

Speaking on Joy News’ The Probe on Sunday, July 27, Fredrick Opoku, the General Secretary of the Union, questioned the department’s relevance and effectiveness in protecting tenants from unlawful rent demands by landlords.

“Do we feel protected under the law? Not at all,” he stated.

“If Rent Control cannot enforce the very law they were created to uphold, then why are they still in existence?” he asked.

According to him, despite provisions in the Rent Act that prohibit landlords from demanding more than six months’ advance rent, the practice of demanding one to two years’ rent remains rampant across the country.

“Let’s not deceive ourselves — there is a clear shortage of housing in Ghana. That scarcity gives landlords unchecked power to dictate prices and conditions. They know if one tenant can’t pay, another desperate one will,” he said.

Citing Section 25 of the Rent Act, Opoku accused officials of the Rent Control Department of hiding behind technicalities and vague interpretations of the law to cover up their failures.

“They always say, ‘the landlord did not demand’ but ask any tenant — have you ever found an apartment where the landlord didn’t ask for one or two years’ rent upfront? That argument is false and out of touch with reality,” he said.

He lamented that young tenants, especially women, are paying as much as GH¢800 per month for basic accommodation, with no relief or intervention from state authorities.

“These landlords are simply cashing in. When such a matter is brought before Rent Control, nothing meaningful happens. So, we ask: what exactly is Rent Control doing? Why should taxpayers continue to fund an agency that can’t protect us?” he quizzed.

The Union is calling for a bold review of Ghana’s rent governance framework, starting with the dissolution of the Rent Control Department and the establishment of a more responsive body that genuinely serves the interest of tenants across the country.

Ghana lacks professional editors in our movie industry

0

Beverly Afaglo is a Ghanaian filmmaker Beverly Afaglo is a Ghanaian filmmaker

Ghanaian filmmaker Beverly Afaglo has attributed Ghana’s crippling film industry to lack of skilled editors.

Speaking on Adom TV during a panel discussion, Beverly said the problem in Ghana’s movie industry is not about talent but about how movies are put together after filming.

She cited Hollywood actress Taraji P. Henson’s performance in the movie “Straw”, arguing that many Ghanaian actors are capable of delivering the same level of performance seen in international films.

However, Ghana’s challenge, she noted, is that the final output often doesn’t match quality because editing is poorly done.

She emphasised that a professional editor plays a very important role in filmmaking but in Ghana, many editors do not meet the standard needed for a high-quality production.

She added that even when an actor gives a strong performance in a scene, the final result may not look impressive if the editor picks the wrong shots.

“The writing and directing in the film were exceptional; everything came together beautifully to evoke emotions. While Taraji did an outstanding job, the success of the film cannot be attributed to acting alone. It takes a skilled crew working in harmony to achieve this level of quality. For instance, a professional editor is crucial. As we lack such professional editors, some editors in Ghana do not deliver satisfactory work.

“You can act a movie scene and notice that, despite a good performance in a particular scene, poor editing can undermine it. Often, the editor may miss key shots. If they had chosen a close-up in a certain moment, it could have created a mood that resonates more with the audience,” Bervely stated.

Parliament Ratifies Visa Waiver Pacts With Colombia, Others

0

Parliament has ratified three visa waiver agreements between Ghana and the governments of Colombia, Mozambique, and São Tomé & Príncipe.

This marks a significant step toward deepening diplomatic relations, enhance economic cooperation, and promote regional and international integration.

The agreements, laid before Parliament on July 22, 2025 by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on behalf of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, were referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration for consideration, in accordance with Article 75 of the 1992 Constitution and Order 245 of Parliament’s Standing Orders.

Colombia Agreement

One of the key agreements ratified was the Mutual Visa Exemption Agreement for Holders of Diplomatic, Official, and Service Passports between Ghana and the Republic of Colombia. This agreement, signed in October 2024 during COP 16 in Cali, Colombia, allows eligible passport holders from both nations to enter, transit through, and remain in the other country without a visa for up to 90 days in a calendar year.

The Committee emphasised that the agreement will not only enhance mobility for government officials but also deepen South-South cooperation in critical sectors such as agriculture, education, and energy. It further noted that the pact aligns with Ghana’s immigration policies and imposes no financial burden beyond existing diplomatic responsibilities.

Importantly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was commended for implementing stricter passport security protocols and a more streamlined ratification process. The Committee, satisfied with the legal and strategic merits of the agreement, unanimously recommended its ratification.

Mozambique Agreement

Parliament also ratified the Bilateral Visa Waiver Agreement for Holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports between Ghana and the Republic of Mozambique.

This agreement emerged from recent high-level reciprocal diplomatic engagements and is in line with broader goals of fostering Pan-African integration under frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

Although the Committee acknowledged a minor loss of visa-generated revenue, it concluded that the potential long-term benefits in terms of trade, tourism, security cooperation, and political dialogue significantly outweigh any short-term drawbacks. The agreement is fully compliant with Ghana’s constitutional provisions and requires no additional legislation

São Tomé & Príncipe Agreement

The third agreement ratified by Parliament is a Bilateral Agreement on Visa Waiver for Holders of Diplomatic, Service, and Ordinary Passports between Ghana and the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe. Unlike the previous two, this pact extends the visa waiver to ordinary passport holders, allowing visa-free travel for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Originally signed in October 2021, the agreement had experienced delays in ratification, prompting concerns about Ghana’s responsiveness to bilateral commitments. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has since instituted a new policy to ensure treaty ratifications are concluded within a three-month window going forward.

The Committee noted that while the agreement could lead to some loss in visa fees, the expected gains in people-to-people exchanges, trade, and tourism, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea region, make the agreement highly beneficial. Furthermore, it includes provisions for the protection of domestic laws and national security, including the right to deny entry to individuals who pose a risk.

The Committee concluded that this agreement supports Ghana’s dualist legal framework and its foreign policy objectives, and urged Parliament to ratify it without delay. Parliament subsequently approved it by resolution.

Strategic Gains and Broader Implications

The MPs said collectively, the ratified agreements signal Ghana’s growing commitment to international cooperation and regional integration.

According to the lawmakers, by facilitating easier travel for diplomatic and, in some cases, ordinary passport holders, the country is positioning itself as a proactive player in global and continental affairs.

“The agreements ratified today reflect a forward-looking foreign policy that supports not only diplomatic engagement but also economic transformation through trade, tourism, and educational exchange,” noted the Committee in its consolidated report.

These developments come amid broader reforms within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including enhanced passport security protocols and a renewed focus on timely treaty implementation, as Ghana continues to strengthen its global partnerships through mutual trust and legal compliance.

‘Bawku SHS killing is pure crime not a chieftaincy dispute’ – Edudzi Tameklo

Godwin Edudzi Tameklo is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Petroleum Authority Godwin Edudzi Tameklo is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Petroleum Authority

The Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has cautioned the public against linking the recent killing of students in Bawku to the ongoing chieftaincy dispute.

According to him, the actions of the culprits amount to plain criminality and must be dealt with decisively.

Speaking on TV3 Newday on Monday, July 28, 2025, Edudzi Tameklo stated that, to his understanding, the chieftaincy matter is under discussion and peace talks are ongoing—hence his assertion that the recent incident bears no connection to it.

“When you carry a gun or machete, and you go to a secondary school and discharge that firearm into a school, thereby fatally wounding a student, that’s not chieftaincy dispute, that is crime. So, we need to draw a clear distinction between criminality and issues about chieftaincy. What I do know is that the chieftaincy matter is before Nana Asantehene,” he said.

“What happened at Bawku Secondary School is pure crime, let nobody colour it. What happened in the killing of the Kusasi chief of Ashanti Region is a crime. For a person to mount a motorbike and kill a man in his house is not chieftaincy, its crime. So, the people who are engaged in that conduct are criminals pure and simple,” Edudzi Tameklo said.

The legal practitioner expressed confidence in law enforcement agencies to restore peace and bring the perpetrators to book for their alleged crimes.

“The Nayiri, a very distinguished chief of this republic will not send somebody to go and do such a (sic) thing, never. He will never do that so, the people who are behind these issues of crime are nobody but pure criminals. I am excited that the IGP, the National Security Coordinator, the Minister of Defense, and the Minister of the Interior have all taken steps to ensure that they bring peace to Bawku,” he said.

Minority decries skewed road allocations in mid-year budget

0

The Minority in Parliament has criticised the John Dramani Mahama administration over what it describes as a grossly unbalanced allocation of road projects under the 2025 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review.

According to the caucus, the so-called “Big Push Programme” omits key economic zones such as Greater Accra and Ashanti, which together host more than a third of Ghana’s population.

Speaking on behalf of the caucus, Ranking Member on the Roads and Transportation Committee, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, said the regional bias in the list of projects undermines equitable development.

“It is unacceptable that Greater Accra and Ashanti — the engine rooms of our economy — have been sidelined in this plan,” he stated. “This is a matter of national concern, not partisan grievance.”

The caucus pointed out that critical infrastructure such as the Accra–Kumasi Road, which experiences the highest traffic volumes in the country, has been ignored in the current review.

Damaged sections of this corridor continue to cause major delays for commuters and traders alike. The absence of planned dualisation works at Osino, Nsawam, Enyeresi, and Konongo further compounds the problem.

Also absent are essential links like the Atebubu–Kwame Danso Road and ongoing works at Anwia Nkwanta in Kumasi, both of which had seen progress under previous budget cycles.

“The silence on these corridors tells us the government has no intention of completing what was already started,” Mr. Nyarko added.

The Minority has urged the government to realign its priorities to reflect actual national needs. “Infrastructure planning must follow data and demand — not political expediency,” he said.

“Ghanaians deserve transparency, fairness, and strategic thinking, not a haphazard list designed for headlines.”
