Drama in court as narcotics suspect reports police to judge for asking for ‘GH¢4,000 bribe’ to settle case

0

A 27-year-old trader, Emmanuel Kofi Asare, has accused a Crime Officer at the La Police Station of allegedly demanding a bribe of GH¢4,000 to settle his case outside the court.

According to a GHOne TV report, Asare, who has been charged with unlawful possession of narcotic plants, appeared in court on April 15, 2025, as part of the legal process.

However, he made an accusation against the Crime Officer handling the case, directly addressing the trial judge, Mrs Susanna Edufful.

Asare alleged that the officer had demanded the GH¢4,000 bribe during his arrest at La Wireless on March 24, 2025. His inability to provide the amount, he claimed, resulted in his prosecution.

He further stated that he was arrested alongside a friend, who managed to pay the police the requested amount and was subsequently released.

“A 27-year-old trader, Emmanuel Kofi Asare, has dropped a bombshell at the Circuit Court in Accra, accusing the police officers who arrested him of bribery and corruption. Asare, charged with unlawful possession of narcotic plants, claimed that the police demanded GH¢4,000 each from him and his friend to settle the case.

“His friend, whose name was not disclosed, allegedly made the payment and secured his freedom. However, Asare’s GH¢1,500, which was insufficient, was rejected, leading to his prosecution in court,” GHOne TV reported in a social media post on April 15, 2025.

Following these allegations, the judge has ordered the Crime Officer at the La Police Station to appear in court and respond to the claims made against him.

Asare pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of GH¢50,000, with two sureties backed by documentation worth the amount.

The case has been adjourned to May 7, 2025.

It’s shocking how those who sang Hosanna for Bawumia are now against him – Kwesi Pratt

Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr play videoManaging Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr, has expressed surprise at what he referred to as the sudden change of mind among some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following the 2024 elections loss.

According to Kwesi Pratt, the same individuals who praised the NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia before the 2024 elections as one of the best candidates are now campaigning against him, labeling him as one of the worst.

He said he cannot fathom why such people have shifted their opinions on political issues, particularly the Deputy Communication Officer of the NPP, Ernest Owusu-Bempah.

Speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on April 15, 2025, Pratt also criticized the recent attempts to blame former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections.

“The last time I listened to our sister Adwoa Safo, she was saying that no matter what, Dr Bawumia will lead the party. But I have also heard from the other side that no matter what, our brother Kennedy Ohene Agyapong will lead the party, and they are working assiduously towards that.

“Boakye Agyarko has also stated that the party can only improve if it returns to its core values.

“Now, this guy (Owusu-Bempah) has stated that the election defeat should be blamed on Bawumia, rejecting him as the flagbearer,” he said.

He continued, “The party knows the reasons behind their loss and how to regain power. But my concern is that the same people who were supporting Bawumia and praising his qualities are now criticizing him. They were singing Hosanna for him, but now look at what is happening.

“Previously, you couldn’t criticize former President Akufo-Addo, but now he is being blamed for the election defeat. Isn’t it surprising? How did he suddenly become the devil?”

The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, on Monday, December 9, 2024, declared John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) the winner of the 2024 elections, with a total of 6,328,397 votes.

Dr Bawumia of the NPP received 4,657,304 votes.

Mahama’s party, the NDC, achieved historic success by gaining a huge majority in Parliament.

According to the Minister for Trade, Industry, and Agribusiness, Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, the move is aimed at positioning Ghana as a competitive destination for investment in the growing EV sector.

She made the remarks at the sidelines of the official opening of the new Foton Truck showroom in Tema.

Brazilian butt lift ads banned by UK regulator

0

Adverts from six companies selling liquid Brazilian butt lifts (BBLs) have been banned in the UK for trivialising the risks and exploiting women’s insecurities around body image.

All of them appeared on Facebook or Instagram and used time-limited deals to “irresponsibly pressurise” customers into booking, says the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

One ad, for example, tried to entice customers with an “exclusive opportunity” to get a “perfect peachy look”.

Liquid BBLs involve injecting filler into the buttocks to lift them and make them look bigger or rounded.

The ASA says because of the risks involved, cosmetic surgery should be portrayed as a decision that needs time and thought, rather than urgency to book quickly and grab a deal.

Clinics must be socially responsible and should not trivialise procedures or play on consumers’ insecurities, it says.

One ad said: “Get the curves and contours you’ve always wanted with our safe and effective body filler treatments. Feel confident every step of the way! Safe, proven, and beautifully natural results.”

Another claimed a 0% infection rate at its sterile clinic, with minimal pain.

The ASA says liquid BBLs would carry some level of risk to the patient, such as infections.

It adds: “Marketers must not suggest that happiness or wellbeing depends on conforming to a particular body shape or physical appearance.”

The advertising watchdog says it has been using AI to proactively search for online ads that might break the rules.

Three of the clinics – Beautyjenics, Bomb Doll Aesthetics and Ccskinlondondubai -did not respond to the ASA’s inquiries.

Rejuvenate Clinics said it has reviewed ASA guidance and will remove all references to time-limited offers and state in ads that the surgery is carried out by a medical professional with ultrasound, to minimise risks and enhance safety.

EME Aesthetics said all its clients are given a full consultation and are under no obligation to book any procedures, and it therefore considers that its ad had not pressured consumers or trivialised the risks of cosmetic procedures.

Dr Ducu said it will ensure it follows the ASA’s rules and guidance, that the time-limited Black Friday offer was intended to provide consumers with an opportunity to access the company’s services at a discounted rate, and it always encourages consumers to make informed decisions without pressure.

Liquid BBL facts

  • Plastic surgeons say liquid BBLs can carry significant risks and require expert skill and training to perform
  • The UK industry is not regulated though – beauty clinics offer them
  • Large amounts of filler may be injected with possible serious side-effects, such as blood clots and sepsis
  • The recent death of mum-of-five Alice Webb has highlighted safety concerns around BBLs

Hotels association calls for tourism forum, accountability

0

The Ghana Hotels Association is calling on the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture to prioritize collaboration with the private sector by convening the Public Private Partnership Forum as mandated under Section 42 of the Tourism Act 817.

According to the Association, the consistent neglect of such statutory platforms by successive governments has contributed to the continued existence of many unresolved challenges in the hospitality industry.

Speaking at a press briefing of the Ghana Hotels Assocation’ 50th Anniverasry, the Association’s President, Dr. Edward Ackah Nyameke, also pressed for transparency in the management of the Tourism Development Fund.
“The Forum shall meet at least once each quarter,” Dr. Nyameke quoted directly from the law, stressing that the Minister is expected to organize the meeting “in collaboration with the Authority and the Private Sector.”

The Association also pressed for transparency in the management of the Tourism Development Fund, urging the Ministry to spell out disbursement plans that include key private sector stakeholders. “We expect to hear about the status of the Fund and plans for disbursement that take the private sector into consideration,” he emphasized.

Further, the Association raised concerns over what it described as “harsh enforcement” and inconsistent licensing procedures from various regulatory bodies overseeing the hospitality sector. These include the FDA, EPA, MMDAs, Fire Service, and more recently, NADMO, whose “discretional interpretation” of rules has reportedly led to operational disruptions for some hotel operators across the country.

Strong macroeconomy key to sustaining Ghana’s capital market – Stanbic executive

0

Vice President of Debt Capital Markets & Distribution at Stanbic Bank Ghana, Baffour Agyarko Kwakye

The Vice President of Debt Capital Markets & Distribution at Stanbic Bank Ghana, Baffour Agyarko Kwakye, has said that the sustainability of Ghana’s capital markets is dependent on a stable macroeconomic environment.

Speaking on a panel at West Africa Bond Market Conference on the topic “The Opportunities and Challenges of Developing Africa’s Bond Market – Demand, Supply, and Liquidity,” he highlighted the importance of coordinated regulatory collaboration and macroeconomic resilience as central pillars for a thriving bond market.

He said that “Restoring and maintaining macroeconomic stability in Ghana is essential to the recovery and sustained development of our capital markets.

“Following the 2022 Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, it is clear that trust and investor confidence are the lifeblood of any successful bond market. Without macroeconomic stability, it becomes increasingly difficult to attract and retain investment.”

Mr. Kwakye pointed out that Ghana’s capital market has undergone significant stress in recent years, particularly during the domestic debt restructuring exercise, but remains a critical vehicle for long-term financing for both the public and private sectors.

He also acknowledged the strides made by key stakeholders, especially the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE), in rebuilding confidence and creating a more robust and responsive capital market ecosystem.

“I want to take a moment to commend the Ghana Stock Exchange for the tremendous support they continue to provide to market participants,” he said.

He further advocated for enhanced collaboration among regulators, particularly between the GSE, SEC and the Bank of Ghana, to address structural issues and unlock the full potential of Ghana’s bond market.

“Often, we see that regulatory silos can stall progress. But with more strategic collaboration, some of the persistent issues we face could be resolved more efficiently, and this would significantly deepen the resilience and liquidity of our bond market,” Mr. Kwakye explained.

The West Africa Bond Market Conference is a premier industry event jointly hosted by the Ghana Stock Exchange and the International Capital Market Association (ICMA).

This high-level gathering convenes senior market participants, including policymakers, regulators, central banks, financial institutions, and market infrastructure providers, to engage in in-depth discussions on the current state and future direction of West Africa’s bond markets.

The conference serves as a critical platform for knowledge exchange, regional collaboration, and the promotion of deeper, more integrated capital markets across the sub-region.

We don’t beat people in a democracy – Samson Lardy calls out Kumasi Mayor over brutal decongestion threat

0

Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang

Legal practitioner and media personality, Samson Lardy Anyenini, has issued a strongly worded open letter to the Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, cautioning him against the use of brute force in his planned decongestion exercise.

The Mayor, during a press conference on Monday, April 14, announced that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) would commence a forceful decongestion operation on Wednesday, April 16, targeting traders who have occupied pavements and roadside spaces in the city.

He claimed that previous strategies—such as arrests and seizure of goods—had failed to deter the traders, who consistently return in defiance of city by-laws.

He blamed these traders for the worsening congestion and growing disorder in the city centre.

However, Samson Lardy, who is also the host of Newsfile on Joy News, did not take kindly to the Mayor’s tone or threats.

In his open letter, he wrote:

“Dear Kumasi Mayor, ‘beat[ing]’ traders to remove them from those ‘pavements’ or streets is assault.

That’s a crime.”

He reminded the Mayor that the Ghanaian Constitution strictly prohibits cruel treatment, even for those who break the law:

“Even if you arrested them for offending some national or KMA law, Article 15 of our Constitution forbids you and your ‘10 boys with whips’ from subjecting them to torture, cruelty, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”

Lardy emphasized that human dignity must be upheld, regardless of the situation:

“You must not subject them to ‘any condition that detracts or is likely to detract’ from their dignity and worth as human beings.”

In closing, he made a clear and bold point:

“In this democracy of RULE OF LAW, we don’t resort to lawlessness to check lawlessness, sir.”

The love and support I receive from Ghana are immense, and they mean a lot to me – Mohammed Kudus

0

Mohammed Kudus, controlling the ball Mohammed Kudus, controlling the ball

Mohammed Kudus is becoming more than just a star on the pitch for West Ham; he’s shaping the identity of a new fanbase in Ghana.

The 24-year-old midfielder’s performances in the Premier League are winning hearts far beyond London, with many Ghanaians now cheering for the Hammers simply because of him.

In an interview with NBC Sports, Kudus opened up about the pride and pressure of carrying a nation’s hopes with every match he plays. From casual viewers to celebrities like Ghanaian musician Stonebwoy, fans are connecting deeply with his journey.

“The love and support I receive from Ghana is immense, and it means a lot to me. It shows that I’m doing something right and that there are a lot of people looking up to me. I try my best to set examples and give my all in every situation. Even though we’re human and still make mistakes, not everything is going to be perfect for the kids coming up,” he said.

“It’s a nice feeling to know that I have all that support from Ghana. It does come with pressure because everyone’s looking up to you and watching you during games, but it’s a pressure I have to deal with — and I’m built for it,” he added.

Energy Minister decries rampant power theft

0

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has described the level of illegal electricity connections in the Northern Region as alarmingly high, warning that the situation demands urgent intervention.

Currently, over 50% of electricity distribution losses within the NEDCo operational area are attributed to the Northern Region, primarily due to widespread power theft and unpaid bills. The Minister says this is severely crippling NEDCo’s operations.

Illegal connections, system overloads, and non-payment of bills are bleeding the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), compounding its financial woes.

During a working visit to Tamale, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, expressed deep concern over the region’s contribution to NEDCo’s losses.

He revealed that while the Northern Region accounts for over 50% of NEDCo’s total losses, a staggering 70% of that figure comes from Tamale alone, largely due to illegal consumption practices. These, he explained, contribute significantly to Aggregate Technical and Commercial (ATC) losses.

“One of the major problems we are facing in the NEDCo area has to do with the Northern Sector. Indeed, when you look at the losses, over 50% of the losses alone are attributable to the Tamale enclave within the Tamale area. Within the Northern Sector, over 70% comes from Tamale, so it means that we are having huge losses,” he stated.

The Minister urged residents to support NEDCo’s field operations and to take responsibility by paying their electricity bills regularly. He emphasised that improving cooperation between customers and the utility provider is critical to sustaining power delivery in the region.

As part of proposed solutions, he called for improved customer service and recommended the introduction of a flexible payment plan for individuals caught engaging in illegal connections, to help them regularise their consumption without undue financial strain.

His comments come on the heels of an appeal by the Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, who has called for the temporary suspension of NEDCo’s ongoing revenue mobilisation exercise, which began on April 7.

The Regional Minister cited the financial pressures following the Ramadan fasting and Eid celebrations, urging for a grace period to allow indebted customers to settle their arrears without facing immediate disconnection.

“We will use this period, between now and the end of this month, I will personally take an interest in it for the first time to support NEDCo to be able to move from place to place to ensure that they have the needed revenue,” he said.

Economists urge action as Ghana awaits IMF’s $370m approval

0

Some economic analysts are calling on the government to accelerate efforts in providing the necessary assurances to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to ensure the smooth continuation of the country’s bailout program.

Ghana recently reached a staff-level agreement of the IMF following a review of its progress on key policy reforms and economic targets, setting the stage for the release of a $370 million tranche.

Speaking to Citi Business News, Economist Professor Godfred Bokpin stressed the importance of maintaining momentum to secure full executive board approval and continued support from the Fund.

“Government has demonstrated good faith, and for that reason, the Fund is inclined to give us a clean bill of health to some extent. However, if you read the staff report thoroughly, there are still a number of reservations that must be addressed urgently,” he noted.

Prof. Bokpin added that further steps will likely be required from the government before the IMF Executive Board meets to finalize the agreement.

Despite the recent progress, the IMF noted a significant dip in program performance towards the end of 2024. The Fund attributed this to fiscal slippages ahead of the general elections, which resulted in a sharp rise in outstanding payments, missed inflation targets, and delays in key reforms.

In response, Ghana’s new administration has introduced a set of corrective measures, including a more disciplined 2025 national budget and strengthened public financial management reforms aimed at restoring program momentum.

The IMF mission also held talks with Ghanaian authorities on addressing long-standing structural weaknesses in fiscal management, procurement processes, and social protection—particularly to shield the most vulnerable from the effects of inflation and fiscal adjustments.

Additionally, the Bank of Ghana’s recent policy rate hike is expected to support ongoing efforts to curb inflation.

On the structural side, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and governance reforms, especially in the management of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) within the gold, cocoa, and energy sectors.

Stop politicising Ghana’s economic gains

0

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Ranking Member on the Economy and Development Committee and Member of Parliament (MP) for Ofoase Ayirebi, has urged the government to focus on consolidating the gains made in Ghana’s economy instead of undermining them for political advantage.

His comments follow the minority’s claim that the recent staff-level agreement between the government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) vindicates the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

This is in response to assertions by the current government that the previous administration breached the IMF programme and mismanaged the economy.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Tuesday, April 15, Nkrumah underscored the need for policy continuity and responsible governance.

“What they have to do as a government is to try to build on it and not every turn and at every corner seek to find ways of undermining the progress that the Ghanaian economy has made,” he said.

He accused the current administration of deliberately discrediting economic data for political gain—an effort he believes has been debunked by the IMF’s own assessment.

“It was their attempt to try to undermine the economic data so that they could score political points that have now been exposed by the fund,” he stated.

Nkrumah also expressed optimism about Ghana’s economic direction, emphasising the importance of bipartisan collaboration.

“We are happy when Ghana makes progress between NPP and NDC,” he said, adding that the IMF’s findings affirm the country is still on the right track.

Accept criticisms in good faith

0

Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has urged players of the Black Stars to embrace public criticism as a natural part of their profession and use it as motivation to improve their performance.

The national team has faced intense scrutiny in recent years, especially during periods of underperformance, which at times created a disconnect between the players and the Ghanaian public. However, recent improved performances have reignited national support and enthusiasm for the team.

Speaking during an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV’s Face to Face, Minister Adams said that criticism is inevitable in professional sports and should not be taken personally by the players.

“My message to the players has been very simple that the country is behind you. Yes, criticisms, we will criticise you. Because if all of us are saying only good things about you, then it’s not normal,” he said.

He explained that criticism often represents a small but vocal minority, while many more supporters may remain quiet in their praise.

“Some people must see something completely wrong and should be ready and willing to voice it out irrespective of what the consequences will be.

“So, if you’re unfortunate to hear the criticisms, just multiply that by a hundred, and that is the number of persons who say the good things praising you. Because in this world, praises are not normally reported, have that at the back of your mind,” he advised.

Ghana must end cycle of IMF reliance – Sagnarigu MP

0

The Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu, Atta Issah, has called on the government to rethink its dependence on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for economic support.

His remarks come on the back of a recent staff-level agreement between the IMF and Ghana, following the fourth review of the country’s three-year Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme. If approved by the IMF Executive Board, the deal will unlock approximately US$370 million in financial assistance.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Mr. Issah, a member of Parliament’s Finance Committee, voiced concern over Ghana’s recurring engagement with the IMF over the past three decades.

“I only urge that this should be the last time as a country we cede our sovereignty to external partners. We have the brains in this country. Why is it that for 17 times consecutively, every government in the last three decades has in one way or the other signed up to the IMF programme?

“And I think that it’s cause for us to reflect as a nation and to make sure that this becomes the last time we will approach the IMF again,” he suggested.

Mr. Issah acknowledged the role both the Akufo-Addo and Mahama administrations have played in managing the economy, stressing that the country’s achievements are the result of efforts across different governments.

“For me, I know that the NDC should get the credit, as well as the NPP who just left power should also get credit in terms of how we managed this IMF programme,” he stated.

The IMF, in its recent review, noted that Ghana’s economy outperformed expectations in 2024, boosted by strong performance in the mining and construction sectors. However, the Fund also raised concerns about potential fiscal slippages ahead of the upcoming general elections and delays in key structural reforms.

ACEG calls for cultural, environmental integration in economic revival

0

Environmentalist Alhaji D.S. Mahama Iddrisu Environmentalist Alhaji D.S. Mahama Iddrisu

The Arise for Change for Economic Growth (ACEG) has emphasized the need for Ghana to chart a new course in economic development.

According to ACEG, Ghana’s economic revival must be built on the pillars of culture, environmental sustainability, and strategic resource management.

D. S. Mahama Iddrisu, the National Chairman of ACEG, speaking during the Ghana @ 68 Culture, Heritage, Environmental and Economic Growth Forum (CHEEGF) in Accra on April 15, 2025, criticized what he described as decades of mismanagement and over-reliance on external institutions such as the IMF and World Bank. He argued that these institutions have painted a misleading picture of Ghana as a “fast-growing economy” without addressing its underlying vulnerabilities.

“Despite our abundant natural resources, Ghana continues to struggle because these assets are neither refined nor leveraged for national benefit,” he stated.

He particularly criticized the economic stewardship of the previous administration under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, citing what he described as “poor financial management” and the misuse of foreign exchange reserves during the tenure of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

ACEG, which boasts over 500,000 members, outlined a comprehensive strategy to restore sustainable economic growth. The key pillars include:

Prioritizing land, water, the environment, and capital as foundational national assets.

Strengthening education, healthcare, and trade systems.

Human Capital Development – Investing in education and healthcare.

Infrastructure Renewal – Improving roads, housing, energy, and related sectors.

We are determined to defeat Accra Lions on Wednesday – Kotoko coach Prosper Ogum

Kotoko coach Prosper Ogum Kotoko coach Prosper Ogum

The head coach of Asante Kotoko, Prosper Narteh Ogum, has indicated that his team is poised to give everything to defeat Accra Lions in their midweek Ghana Premier League clash.

The Porcupine Warriors will face the Accra-based club on Wednesday, April 16, in an outstanding Week 22 fixture of the league campaign.

Speaking in a pre-match interview, Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum acknowledged that there is some fatigue within the team. However, he remains confident that his players are well-prepared and ready to secure victory against Accra Lions.

“There is still an element of fatigue among the players, but we have to be ready for the game on Wednesday and play. So we are prepared in terms of what we have to offer on the field. Tactically, we are ready.

“If you look at Accra Lions, they are a very good side. They are not in a good position on the league table, but they will be motivated. They will come to play and win to climb out of their current situation. We are also determined to play and win. It’s going to be a close game—very interesting in terms of who comes out on top,” Coach Ogum said.

Wednesday’s league match between Accra Lions and Asante Kotoko will kick off at 3:00 p.m. at the Accra Sports Stadium.

MMDCE agitations based on assumptions, not facts – Ahmed Ibrahim

0

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has criticised the recent unrest surrounding the nomination of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

He noted that most of these protests are not based on actual nominations but rather on people’s suspicions and assumptions.

Ibrahim questioned why individuals are demonstrating over appointments that have not yet been made or officially announced, suggesting that such actions imply they already believe someone else is more qualified than them.

He was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of an engagement with key leaders of major Christian religious institutions in Accra on Tuesday April 19.

The meeting formed part of broader consultations with faith-based organisations aimed at galvanising national support and fostering community participation for the success of the National Sanitation Day (NSD) initiative.

The Minister emphasised that the decision on who gets nominated lies solely with the President, and his own role in the process is complete.

He added that instead of protesting, people should commend the President for swiftly forming his cabinet, Council of State, and appointing MMDCEs in record time.

“I don’t see chaos as we are saying it. People are agitating…Thankfully, it is not from where the news announcement have been made. It is where people’s suspicion is being on suspense and I could hear of only Mampong…Ashanti Region, we’ve not mentioned the MMDCEs from Ashanti Region. It’s only Kumasi Mayor that has been mentioned. So if you are in Asante Mampong, and you are demonstrating, what are you demonstrating for?

“It’s like you’re going for exams and you know you couldn’t write and you are crying that the examiner will fail you. Wait till the examiner brings the results. When the results are out and you fail, then that one you can say you can question and call for remarking. But the results are not out and you are crying that the examiner is going to fail you.

“You come to Tema Central. Tema Central is in Greater Accra. Greater Accra has not been mentioned. So why should somebody be crying that somebody’s else good? It’s like you know that that person beat you or is better than you…As a minister, I’m done with the work. The work is with the president.”

No need to release Black Stars budget now

0

Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams, has rejected calls for the immediate release of the budget allocated to the Black Stars for their matches against Chad and Madagascar.

Amid growing public demands for transparency and accountability in the sports sector, there have been increasing calls for the government to disclose expenditure on the national football team.

However, in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV’s Face to Face, the minister stated that it would be inappropriate to release the budget at this stage.

“You will know it when the time comes. I’m saying that I will make it public. Has the National Team ceased playing? We have the next assignment in September; we have matches that we’re going to play. And we will surely make it public,” he said.

Adams clarified that the current budget remains a working draft, and releasing it prematurely could lead to unnecessary speculation and misinterpretation.

“It will be unfair to make a draft budget public, I’m not hiding it,” he emphasized.

He assured Ghanaians that full disclosure will be made once all national team activities are completed.

The minister also guaranteed there would be no delay in the budget presentation for the Black Stars’ upcoming fixtures.

“There’s no way I’m going to allow the Ghana Football Association to delay in presentation of a budget for the September round of matches,” he affirmed.

‘It was a hoax, a sham’ – Sam George alleges SIM registration under NPP was ‘brazen fraud’

0

Communication Minister Sam Nartey George has launched a scathing attack on the previous government’s SIM registration exercise, describing it as a national fraud.

The Ningo Prapram MP said it was a complete waste of public and private resources and flagrantly disregarded the rights of Ghanaians.

“It is not re-registration. It is a registration,” the Ningo Prampram MP said bluntly on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday.

“You would be doing a re-registration if there were a registration in the first place. There was a sham. There was a hoax. There was a hoodwinking of Ghanaians. An unfortunate episode in the history of our country.”

He did not hold back in his critique of how the exercise was handled. “Irresponsible public governance, to put it lightly,” he said.

“Where Ghanaians were told they were registered. Meanwhile, no registration was happening.”

When asked why no one has yet been held responsible, especially given the financial and legal implications of the failed exercise, Sam George made it clear that accountability is on the way.

“Early days yet,” he said. “The Attorney General is responsible for holding everyone who holds public office.”

He confirmed that some steps have already been taken.

“We have sent some information to him, and we’re still building further evidence and sending it to the Attorney General,” he said.

The Minister stressed the importance of leadership accountability, contrasting his own conduct with what he described as the recklessness of his predecessors.

“I sit in this chair today mindful of the fact that tomorrow I won’t be here, and my actions and inactions will be held accountable,” he said.

“That’s what those who occupied the seat before appear to be oblivious to.”

His tone grew sharper as he questioned the patriotism and integrity of the previous leadership.

“When you look at the brazen nature of their reckless actions, it leaves you asking yourself—do these people love this country to start with?” he asked.

“Do they understand what it means to be Ghanaian?”

He continued, “Do they understand the weight of responsibility that sits on your shoulder when you hold the high office of Minister of State?”

Sam George could not hide his disbelief at the damage done between 2021 and 2023.

“I cannot, for the life of me, imagine how, today, vested with this responsibility, one would act in such a reckless manner,” he said.

“To take the country down the road for two years, claiming that you were doing registration, taking the biometrics of citizens and not cross-managing them well.”

He accused the previous administration of operating in “flagrant disregard of our data protection laws and our service security laws,” adding, “People must have a certain modicum of respect for Ghanaians.”

The Minister’s comments are the most direct condemnation yet of the controversial SIM registration campaign.

His remarks raise fresh questions about data governance, financial waste, and political accountability in Ghana’s digital transformation efforts.

I married my wife exactly one year after we met

Ghanaian actor and media personality Harold Amenyah Ghanaian actor and media personality Harold Amenyah

Ghanaian actor and media personality Harold Amenyah has shared the romantic story behind his decision to marry wife Irene Owusu exactly one year to the day they first met, April 1.

In an interview on UCook with Empress Gifty, Amenyah disclosed that they first crossed paths on April 1, 2022, and chose to honor their first anniversary by exchanging vows in a private ceremony on the same date in 2023.

“I was single for three years before I met her. Exactly one year after I met her, we got married on our anniversary.

“People were asking if I was joking since it was set on April Fools Day, but I was being serious,” he shared.

The intimate wedding ceremony was carefully curated to reflect the couple’s values, with only 100 close friends and family in attendance.

“My wedding was very private. Even when we were inviting people. We stated that no phones were allowed. Not one blogger was invited. It was just for 100 guests,” he shared.

However, the couple’s wishes were compromised when some attendees leaked photos online, unexpectedly thrusting Irene into the public eye.

“It started spreading around on WhatsApp, maybe a friend or family member took a picture just to prove that he or she was there. And people were hungry for content. Even the fact that it was private made it go viral,” he said.

Next four years is golden age of development

Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs

Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, has assured Ghanaians to expect an ‘unprecedented’ level of development within the next four years.

He said the period under President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would mark a “golden age of development,” adding that the government welcomed the contributions and support of all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations.

Ibrahim, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Banda Constituency in the Bono Region, stated that inclusivity is the true embodiment of democracy and a core principle of the NDC, aimed at facilitating accelerated national development.

He emphasized that disunity, backbiting, and petty squabbles would derail the path of progressive national development and called for national unity to drive the wheels of growth.

Ibrahim gave the assurance while addressing a meeting of the Banda District Assembly at Banda Ahenkro, where the Assembly confirmed President Mahama’s nominee, Peter Dongi, as the Banda District Chief Executive (DCE).

The President’s nominee received unanimous approval from the 19-member assembly, polling 100 percent ‘yes’ votes in an election conducted and supervised by the Electoral Commission.

Ibrahim stated that the government remains committed to including everyone in the nation’s development process and urged the youth to remain focused, make informed decisions, and support the development agenda.

The MP encouraged the DCE to prioritize development and urged the people to support him in implementing strategies that would elevate the district’s progress.

He added that the government had so far nominated Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) for 13 regions, noting that the remaining three regions would soon have their nominees.

Ibrahim concluded that the government is committed to deepening the decentralisation process, adding that the successful nominations and confirmations of the MMDCEs reflect cohesiveness in advancing the nation’s decentralisation system.

GHA expresses disappointment over 2025 budget hotel taxes

Dr Edward Ackah-Nyamike Junior, President of the GHA Dr Edward Ackah-Nyamike Junior, President of the GHA

The Ghana Hotels Association (GHA) has expressed concern over what it describes as unfriendly tax policies in the 2025 National Budget, which it says are stifling growth in the country’s hospitality industry.

At a press briefing held on April 15, 2025, Dr Edward Ackah-Nyamike Jnr., President of the GHA, voiced the association’s disappointment with the government’s continued imposition of certain levies and the lack of reform in critical areas.

“We are particularly concerned that the COVID-19 Levy is still on the books, even though the pandemic’s emergency phase is over. Even though we have been told that the government is working on scrapping it, including certain other taxes, as I speak, it is still in effect,” he said.

Dr Ackah-Nyamike highlighted several issues hurting the hotel industry, including high utility tariffs, steep import duties, and inflated prices of goods and services. He also called for a review of the capital allowance threshold to ease the burden on hotel operators.

Another pressing issue raised was the withholding of fire safety licenses by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), even after hotels had fulfilled payment requirements.

According to Dr. Ackah-Nyamike, “Some hotels have paid for their licenses but are yet to receive them, while others are experiencing delays without any official explanation.”

The GHA is urging the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture to intervene and ensure transparency and accountability in the licensing process. The association is also considering direct engagement with the GNFS to resolve the matter.

Dr Ackah-Nyamike called on the ministry to honour its obligation under the Tourism Act 817 of 2012, which mandates quarterly forums to engage stakeholders in the tourism and hospitality sector.

“We’ve not had these engagements for years. The absence of these forums leaves industry players feeling sidelined,” he stated.

Akwah Sampson, Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, pledged the Authority’s support for the GHA.

He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and the hotel industry to build a more efficient and robust system.

Professor Kobby Mensah, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), also assured hotel industry players of increased partnership and collaboration for sustainable development and better service delivery.

As the association marks its 50th anniversary, several celebratory activities have been lined up, including:

A health walk in Ho

The unveiling of the GHA @50 anniversary cloth and a donation to the Tema General Hospital

A symposium themed “Fifty (50) Years of Advocacy, Perseverance and Impacting Ghana’s Tourism & Hospitality Industry”

Communications Director of the 2024 Bawumia campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye Communications Director of the 2024 Bawumia campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye

The Communications Director of the 2024 Bawumia campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye has disclosed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is undergoing a comprehensive restructuring process aimed at strengthening the party.

Speaking on Joy News’ AM Show monitored by GhanaWeb om Tuesday, April 15, 2025, he indicated that some deliberate actions would be taken by the party.

“The party is going through a restructure, we are rebuilding. As part of the rebuilding processes, there are certain things we should do and shouldn’t do.

“One of the things we should not do is to be discussing obvious internal issues in the public space”, he noted.

He further raised concerns about the negative impact of public discussions on the party.

“Why should we be discussing what happened within our party or how our campaign went on television?” He asked. “How does that benefit the viewer?

“The viewer doesn’t care about that. The viewers are more interested in the alternatives we are offering as a political party, whether it’s in addressing economic issues, healthcare, or education”, he added.

Social media activist petitions OSP over Judge’s decision in Enchi galamsey case

0

Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng

A social media activist and anti-corruption advocate, Sulemana Issifu, has filed a formal petition with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), calling for a thorough investigation into the conduct of a judge who presided over a recent galamsey-related case in Enchi.

The judge in question had initially released suspects arrested for illegal mining (galamsey) and ordered the return of confiscated excavators—an action that drew widespread public condemnation.

Following the backlash, the judge reportedly reversed the decision, a move that Issifu argues raises serious red flags about the motives behind the initial ruling.

In his petition, Mr. Issifu alleges that the judge’s original decision may have been influenced by corruption rather than law.

He contends that the about-face following public outcry is “a clear manifestation that the initial ruling was not premised on law.”

“His decision, I suspect, was actuated by corruption. And his backtracking after the public backlash is a clear manifestation that his initial ruling was not premised on law,” Issifu stated.

He further argued that such conduct, if proven, strips the judge of the judicial immunity typically afforded to members of the bench in the lawful execution of their duties.

Mr. Issifu revealed that he has also filed additional processes aimed at securing disciplinary action against the judge, promising to disclose more details in due course.

“It’s our duty to ensure that persons exercising the powers of the state do not use that power to the detriment of the very state whose interest they are duty-bound to protect,” he emphasized.

He also raised concerns about what he described as the lack of adequate public scrutiny of the judiciary, noting that this has allowed some judges to act with impunity.

“By far, the Judiciary is the most under-scrutinised arm of government,” Issifu remarked. “If the Judiciary will sit up, many ills perpetrated by our politicians will not happen.”

He warned that he would continue to monitor the handling of galamsey cases in the courts and would not hesitate to take on judges suspected of misconduct.

“This is just the beginning,” Issifu declared. “When judges are held accountable, they will be more careful.

On the matter of galamsey, I’ll keenly monitor their behaviour.”

Ntim Fordjour hiding under parliamentary protection to spread scandals

Ing Kwadwo Twum Boafo, the Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Intelligence Centre Ing Kwadwo Twum Boafo, the Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Intelligence Centre

Ing. Kwadwo Twum Boafo, the Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC), has described the actions of the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, in connection with the Airmed saga as a desperate attempt to court public attention by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP.

Contributing to a panel discussion on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana program, Ing. Twum Boafo claimed that Ntim Fordjour was hiding under the cover of parliamentary privilege to make baseless allegations.

He characterized Fordjour’s actions as a failed attempt to emulate the approach of the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who gained prominence for his exposés that challenged the former Akufo-Addo government.

Twum Boafo dared John Ntim Fordjour to submit himself to security agencies for investigation if he indeed had evidence to support his claims.

“Reverend Ntim Fordjour has been acting irresponsibly, using the cloak of Parliament to shield himself. If you have information that the Airmed flight was carrying cocaine or contraband, submit it to the NIB and the Inter-Ministerial Committee.

“He wants to turn himself into another Okudzeto, but he can never be like Okudzeto. He has no evidence; all he does is spread scandal. He is hiding under the armpit of Afenyo-Markin because he’s afraid of being arrested. If you’re a man worth your salt, when the security agencies call, you show up,” he stated.

On April 1, 2025, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, claimed that the Minority Caucus had intercepted intelligence indicating that an air ambulance landed in Ghana without any patient referrals.

According to the Minority, two flights—suspected of carrying cocaine and an undisclosed amount of cash—landed in Ghana between March 20 and March 25, 2025.

‘We’ll blacklist Mobile Money fraudsters across all networks’ – Communications Minister

0

The Communications Minister has warned Electronic Money Issuers (EMIs) and mobile network operators (MNOs), that the upcoming central SIM registration system will give the National Communications Authority (NCA) the power to blacklist fraudsters across all networks.

Samuel Nartey George, speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, April 15, said telcos have failed to act on mobile money fraud complaints despite repeated reports. He accused them of turning a blind eye, even when fraud patterns are obvious.

“That is my problem with the EMIs that we are going to deal with,” the Ningo Prampram MP stated.

“When there is a proven case that a particular number… and again, when you follow, especially those who do the Facebook thing, it is a string of similar numbers that are used.”

According to him, people consistently report these fraudulent numbers to EMIs. Yet, little is done to stop the syndicates.

“Several reports are made to the EMIs and for them to talk to their sister companies, the MNOs, to block those numbers, but they are not doing it,” he said.

But that is about to change, he assured. Under the new registration framework, the Communications Ministry is building a centralised system that will sit directly with the NCA. This, he said, will drastically alter the enforcement landscape.

“That’s the beauty of the registration system we are going to do,” the Minister explained.

“Because the system is going to sit with the NCA. The NCA will have the power to blacklist numbers across networks.”

This means a fraudster blocked on one network will be blocked on all others, ending the common practice of switching networks to evade detection.

Even more significantly, the Minister revealed that telecom operators who fail to act on flagged numbers will face stiff financial penalties.

“If a report is made and we identify that this number is perpetuating fraud, failure to deal with it by the telco, after we have informed you of this, will result in daily pecuniary fines,” he warned.

The move signals a tough new posture from government as mobile money fraud continues to rise despite public education efforts and SIM registration mandates.

The Minister’s comments suggest that the new system will not only centralise fraud detection but also force network operators to take immediate corrective action—or pay the price.

The new framework is expected to roll out in the coming months, with strong emphasis on data integrity, real-time reporting, and NIA-linked identity verification.

Ghana at a Crossroads: Another Attempt at Reforming its Defective Constitution

0

Ghana has launched a new constitutional reform process, the latest in a series of stalled efforts to address democratic deficits in the 1992 Constitution. An eight-member committee is tasked with proposing amendments by mid-2025. Key reforms may target the concentration of executive power, judicial independence, and decentralization. While the ruling party holds a supermajority, entrenched provisions still require referendums—making broad political and public consensus essential for meaningful change – writes Nicholas Opoku.

Introduction

An eight-member Constitutional Review Committee was inaugurated by newly elected President John Mahama in February 2025, in line with his campaign promise. As a part of its work, the Committee is receiving written submissions and plans to consult stakeholders across the country. Chaired by Professor Henry Kwasi Prempeh, the Committee is mandated to gather stakeholder views and make recommendations aimed specifically at enhancing democratic governance. The Committee is expected to submit to the president proposed amendments to the 1992 Constitution within six months.

The constitutional reform drive has emerged amid recent milestones highlighting Ghana’s role as a beacon of multi-party democracy in Africa. Since the Fourth Republic began in 1992, the country has held eight timely multi-party elections, all deemed fair and transparent by observers. Four of these elections have resulted in peaceful power transitions between Ghana’s two main parties. Ghanaian presidents have also consistently upheld presidential term limits.

Despite electoral successes and alternation of power, Ghana’s “permissive” Constitution has allowed political elites—especially major parties and their allies in state institutions—to manipulate policies for their own benefit. This state capture, along with political patronage and corruption, has hindered delivery of public goods, deepened poverty, and led many Ghanaians to view the country’s democracy as ineffective.

A fresh attempt at constitutional review

This is not the first time Ghana has sought to reform its constitution. Such efforts were conducted during the regimes of the two principal political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the current ruling party, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Notably, in 2010, an extensive and participatory reform process produced a series of reform proposals, which remain relevant but have not seen the light of day. Indeed, the new Committee is required to draw on the outcomes of the 2010 and subsequent reform efforts.

The constitutional amendment process in the 1992 Constitution is quite stringent, requiring a supermajority in Parliament, and, for entrenched provisions, a referendum requiring 40 per cent turnout and 75 per cent approval. As it is Mahama’s final term, there is little incentive for him to backtrack on reform, and the ruling party has for the first time since 1992 secured a two-thirds majority in Parliament. Nevertheless, the fate of the reform drive will remain daunting, and will depend on securing cross-party consensus, as well as support from key civil society and traditional leaders around proposed reforms.

Recurrent themes: Taming the imperial presidency

Many of the issues that the new Committee will likely grapple with were identified by the 2010 Constitutional Review Commission, which adopted several recommendations in its 2011 report. Notably, the proposed reforms related to the vast powers of presidential appointment, including of members of the judiciary, fourth branch institutions, state owned enterprises (SOEs) and the National Council of State, a body which counsels the President in the performance of the functions of the office. There were also proposals to democratize the mode of selection of local government officials. Another recurrent theme has been the mandate and composition of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), a constitutional body appointed by and advising the president on development planning policy and strategy.

Many of these reform proposals are particularly intended to tame what many consider is an ‘imperial presidency’ and the consequent winner-take-all features of the political system.

Many of these reform proposals are particularly intended to tame what many consider is an ‘imperial presidency’ and the consequent winner-take-all features of the political system. Other reforms are related to issues of separation of powers and judicial independence. Notably, the constitutional requirement that a majority of ministers should be appointed from the Parliament and the absence of an upper limit on the number of judges of the Supreme Court have been controversial, with some legal scholars arguing that the latter compromises the institutional and decisional independence of the Court.

The then NDC-led government, where Mahama was serving as vice-president, issued a white paper, accepting some of the CRC’s recommendations, while rejecting others. Nevertheless, the initiator and “champion” of the reform process, the late President John Mills, died in office in July 2012. Mahama, who briefly succeeded Mills and went on to win the 2012 elections, sought but failed to build bi-partisan consensus on numerous proposed amendments to entrenched constitutional provisions. When Mahama lost the 2016 general elections to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akufo-Addo, the NDC’s constitutional reform agenda was brought to an abrupt end.

President Akufo-Addo did not seek to pursue comprehensive reforms, instead prioritizing secondary education and other socio-economic policies. Nevertheless, the NPP pursued governance reforms through proposed changes to the mode of selection of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and to allow political parties to sponsor candidates in local government elections. The presidential appointment of local chief executives has been criticized for stymying effective decentralization, local political accountability, and community participation and initiative in local government and development.

Unlike the 2010 process, two separate amendment bills were presented to Parliament. Some civil society organizations strongly backed the government’s proposals. The opposition NDC, however, backtracked on its initial commitment, withdrawing support for the bills in Parliament. A cross section of the public also feared that the participation of political parties in the election of local government officials would mean the process would be captured by political elites. As a result, the NPP thought they did not have popular support to cross the constitutional thresholds for the amendment of an entrenched provision and withdrew the amendment bills from Parliament in December 2019.

In 2023, the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, sought to revive the stalled constitutional review project and established a Constitution Review Consultative Committee (CRCC) to review the 2011 report of the Constitution Review Commission and make actionable proposals. President Akufo-Addo subsequently endorsed the project and received the report of the CRCC in December 2024. The reform proposals are less comprehensive, but touch on the main issues as the 2011 report, with some variations.

The successive reform attempts mean that many of the themes are recurrent and, crucially, some of the reforms appear to have broad support among the two main political parties. Notably, there is general consensus that the outsized role of the President in the overall constitutional schema, including control over appointments throughout all levels of the public services and state structure, has retarded the development of independent institutions, hindered credible checks and balances, and cultivated patronage politics. The obligatory appointment of a majority of Ministers among parliamentarians has also been identified as the primary reason for Parliament’s inability to play its executive oversight role.

The unlimited and unregulated size of the membership of Parliament, Ministers, and the Supreme Court creates perverse incentives and pressures for unrestrained and unsustainable growth in the size of all three branches . . .

Further, the unlimited and unregulated size of the membership of Parliament, Ministers, and the Supreme Court creates perverse incentives and pressures for unrestrained and unsustainable growth in the size of all three branches.  In the case of the Supreme Court, the absence of a ceiling incentivizes court packing.

Additionally, poor corporate governance in state-owned enterprises, notably non-competitive, non-transparent appointment and removal of board and officers by the President based on non-objective criteria, continues to distort fiduciary accountability and entity performance. SOEs have over the years become conduits for partisan political patronage, undermining performance goals. The appointment of members of Parliament to boards of SOEs also distorts the oversight role of members of Parliament and interferes with management prerogatives.

There may also be a push for mechanisms to enhance public participation in policy-making. Notably, the absence of a constitutional mechanism for citizens to initiate constitutional amendments leaves the political class as gatekeepers of even formal debates on constitutional reform.

Prospects

The early start of the constitutional reform process soon after the inauguration of the new President and the short term of the new Committee mean that specific reform proposals can emerge quickly, enhancing the chances of formal debate and even approval. Nevertheless, the constitutional amendment process in Ghana is daunting. While provisions that do not require referendum have a high chance of approval since the NDC holds the required supermajority, there is no guarantee that this would be easy. Under the constitution, members of Parliament vote on constitutional amendments through a secret ballot, creating possibilities where party whips may not be able to require consistent votes.

Crucially, most of the critical provisions require a referendum, necessitating broad political and public consensus.

Crucially, most of the critical provisions require a referendum, necessitating broad political and public consensus. This may require longer periods of inter-party dialogue and popular mobilization, including securing support, or at least averting strong opposition from influential civil society organizations and traditional leaders.

Furthermore, time is of the essence. The closer the 2028 elections approach, gaining bi-partisan support and broad public backing may prove more elusive. In this context, reform proposals may necessarily be less robust than reform enthusiasts may wish to see. Accordingly, even if successful, the comprehensive reform process might only lead to incremental changes, rather than result in an effectively new constitution

My fidelity as Communications Minister is to Ghanaians, not MNOs – Sam George

0

Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George says his loyalty lies with the Ghanaian people and not Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), despite lobbying pressures from industry players.

He made the declaration during an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, 15th April.

“I am the Minister for Communications for the Republic of Ghana, and my fidelity is to the Ghanaian people,” he asserted.

“The interests of ordinary Ghanaians will always come first in every policy decision we take.”

Mr George was responding to questions about balancing regulation with industry cooperation.

He emphasised that while the government works with MNOs, it does so on the basis of protecting consumers and national interest.

“We welcome private sector participation, but they must understand that this space will not be run solely for profit at the expense of the public good,” he said.

He reiterated his commitment to transparency and fairness in handling the telecommunications sector, adding that consumer protection remains a top priority.

“The days when telcos could run roughshod over regulatory frameworks are over. We are enforcing the rules and demanding accountability.”

NDC group in Talensi rejects DCE nominee

0

Aggrieved supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region have kicked against the nomination of John Millim Naabwomya as the District Chief Executive (DCE) nominee.

John Milim Naabwomya, a known affiliate of the party, is among 15 nominees appointed by President Mahama on April 4 to the Municipal and District Assemblies in the region.

Speaking at a press conference, the aggrieved members, led by Charles King Luu, strongly opposed the nomination, describing it as a betrayal of the party’s values and a potential threat to the interests of the party in the district.

The members also raised serious concerns about the nominee’s political affiliations, integrity, and his suitability for the DCE role. The group accused him of being a “loyal disciple” and “devoted agent” of the Paramount Chief of Talensi, Tongo Rana Kugbilsong Nanlebegtang, who they allege is a staunch New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist.

It is interesting to note that the Paramount Chief of Talensi is a core NPP member, activist and an elephant of the district… nominating his close ally as DCE under an NDC government amounts to ceding the district to the opposition,” the statement read.

The aggrieved members also alleged that the nomination of John Millim Naabwomya was influenced by the Member of Parliament for the area Daniel Mahama, who they claim swapped the original nominee in favour of Naabwomya and is allegedly paying disgruntled party members to suppress dissent.

Citing a purported intelligence report submitted to national security warning of potential unrest should Naabwomya be approved, the aggrieved party members are calling on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene.

We plead with President Mahama to demand a further background check on this nominee… We believe the situational report from the state security was hidden from him prior to the nomination,” they stated.

The aggrieved members further stated that they will pursue all legal avenues to challenge the nomination if it is not withdrawn, warning that imposing Naabwomya on the district could destabilize the NDC’s base in Talensi and tarnish the image of the party.

We the members of the NDC in the Talensi district and all well-meaning people of Talensi are ready to acknowledge any of the applicants for that position except John Millim, ” the statement concluded.

Classic Button-Down Shirts For Women

0

Button-down shirts have been a staple in women’s fashion for decades, and for good reason. They are classic, versatile, and can be dressed up or down for any occasion. Whether you’re heading to the office, going out for a casual lunch, or attending a fancy event, a button-down shirt is the perfect choice.

There are many different styles of button-down shirts for women, but the classic Oxford shirt is a timeless favorite. These shirts are usually made from durable cotton fabric and feature a buttoned collar, buttoned cuffs, and a button-down front. They come in a variety of colors and patterns, making it easy to find one that suits your personal style.

Another popular style of button-down shirt for women is the chambray shirt. Chambray is a lightweight, breathable fabric that is perfect for warmer weather. Chambray shirts typically have a more relaxed fit and can be worn with jeans for a casual look, or with tailored pants for a more polished ensemble.

For a more feminine twist on the classic button-down shirt, consider a blouse with ruffles, lace, or embroidery. These details add interest and flair to a traditional shirt and can be dressed up with a skirt or dress pants for a special occasion.

When shopping for a button-down shirt, it’s important to consider the fit and fabric. Look for a shirt that fits well in the shoulders and bust, with enough room to move comfortably. Choose a fabric that is breathable and easy to care for, such as cotton or a cotton blend.

In conclusion, classic button-down shirts for women are a wardrobe essential that can take you from work to weekend with ease. Whether you prefer a traditional Oxford shirt, a casual chambray shirt, or a feminine blouse with embellishments, there are plenty of options to choose from. Invest in a few quality button-down shirts and you’ll always have a timeless and versatile piece to reach for in your closet.

Players are heartbroken – Ghana Hockey Vice on teams withdrawal from Championships

0

The Vice President of the Ghana Hockey Federation, Elizabeth King, says the U21 national team players are disheartened after Ghana’s withdrawal from the upcoming Junior Africa Cup.

The tournament which was scheduled to take place in Windhoek, Namibia from April 18 to 25, would have provided the young players with their first taste of international competition.

JoySports first reported on April 11 that Ghana would no longer participate in the tournament.

In an exclusive interview, King explained that despite submitting a detailed budget and documentation to the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, no financial support was secured.

“We submitted the budget and all relevant documents to the NSA and the Ministry of Sports, hoping we would receive funding,” she said.

“Some individuals even began non-residential camping and training at their own expense, anticipating support from the Ministry.”

She added that hopes remained high until April 4, when the Ministry officially communicated its inability to support the team.

“We were still hopeful that the Ministry would step in, but on April 4th, they officially informed us that they couldn’t support the team. With no other option, we had to write to the African organizers and withdraw from the tournament which came as a shock to the continent.”

King also highlighted the emotional impact the withdrawal has had on the players, stressing how important international exposure is to their development.

“It was through the youth games that we developed a crop of players for our national teams, that was around 2010,” she said.

“We had the U21 team competing in East London and South Africa, and from those tournaments, the current senior team emerged.”

“The dream of any hockey player is to play in international matches not just local ones. So when they miss the opportunity to compete in such games, it becomes truly disheartening.”

Ghana’s absence from the Junior Africa Cup also denies the young team an opportunity to participate in the Junior World Cup.

Antagonism not the way to fix GFA issues – Kofi Adams

0

Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has cautioned against using an antagonistic approach to address internal concerns within the Ghana Football Association (GFA), stressing the need for collaboration and constructive problem-solving.

For years, there have been perceptions of behind-the-scenes power struggles and entrenched interests in the sports sector, particularly between the Ministry and the GFA. However, Adams maintains that confrontation should be a last resort.

Speaking in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV’s Face to Face, the Minister emphasized the importance of working collaboratively with stakeholders to resolve issues in the sector.

“There are a number of federations that, as a minister responsible for sports, you will work with and work through. Being an antagonist should be the last thing you must adopt as a leader,” he stated.

Adams acknowledged that challenges do exist but said his approach is to focus on resolving problems rather than targeting individuals.

“I see problems, but I don’t see the human beings as the problems. The first thing I will do is to let us identify the problem. And to let you know that we must solve these problems,” he explained.

However, the Minister made it clear that those who persistently obstruct progress risk being seen as part of the problem themselves.

“But where you continue to become an obstacle to solving the problems, then it means now you are a problem, and in that case, we can deal with you as the problem,” he added.

His comments come amid ongoing conversations around reform and accountability in Ghana’s sports administration.

Aston Villa 3-2 PSG (4-5 on aggregate): Roaring Villa comeback falls just short in Champions League

0

Aston Villa threatened to pull off a stunning comeback against Paris St-Germain before going out of the Champions League on a dramatic night at Villa Park.

Villa were attempting to overturn a 3-1 deficit to reach the semi-final but their hopes looked in tatters when they were two goals down inside the first half-hour

Achraf Hakimi cashed in on Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez’s mistake to put PSG ahead, then Nuno Mendes doubled the French side’s lead to leave Villa needing to score at least four goals.

In a thunderous Villa Park atmosphere, Unai Emery’s team refused to yield and launched a magnificent response to put this hugely talented PSG side on the rack.

Youri Tielemans pulled one back after 34 minutes with a deflected shot before a second half of pure theatre unfolded in front a frenzied Villa Park.

Villa struck twice in two minutes to spark hopes of a remarkable revival, John McGinn scoring from 20 yards after 55 minutes before defender Ezri Konsa put them ahead on the night after fantastic work by Marcus Rashford.

And, as Villa’s belief grew, it took three crucial saves from PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to stop them drawing level in the tie.

He dived high to his left to magnificently claw away Rashford’s rising drive, then somehow turned out Tielemans’ header before saving at the feet of substitute Marco Asensio.

PSG managed to regain a measure of composure to hold on and will meet Arsenal or Real Madrid in the semi-final.

Kwahu Business Forum about Ghana, not NDC or NPP

0

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has stressed that the upcoming Kwahu Business Forum is a national initiative focused on promoting industrialisation and entrepreneurship in Ghana, not a politically motivated endeavour.

Speaking about the event, scheduled for Saturday, April 19, Debrah underscored the need for unity and collaboration across political lines to achieve the forum’s broader goals.

“I don’t want us to look at it as a political thing,” he stated, explaining that President Mahama’s vision for the forum is centered on Ghana’s development and its rightful place in industrialisation.

Debrah disclosed that he had reached out to colleagues from the opposition, including Hon. Bryan Acheampong, to rally bipartisan support for the initiative.

“What the president wants to do is not about NDC or NPP. It’s something that is about Ghana,” Debrah explained.

He emphasized that the forum’s main objective is to create lasting opportunities for future generations and to ensure Ghana reaps the benefits of sustainable industrial growth.

Debrah also expressed optimism about the support from members of the opposition, noting that they had pledged to participate and contribute meaningfully to the discussions.

“They will be there, and they will make statements to buttress the fact that this project must not be looked at as a political thing, but must be looked at as a national objective that we should all push,” he remarked.
