How PROs are shaping the race for ‘Artiste of the Year’

From L to R: MC Portfolio, Vida Adutwumwaa and Tilly Akua Nipaa From L to R: MC Portfolio, Vida Adutwumwaa and Tilly Akua Nipaa

As the countdown to the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) heats up, the spotlight isn’t just on the artistes, it’s also on the people pulling strings behind the scenes: their Public Relations Officers (PROs).

These media tacticians are shaping narratives, driving fan engagement, and amplifying the achievements of their respective artistes, turning the race for ‘Artiste of the Year’ into a high-stakes PR showdown.

Last year’s blueprint: The MC Portfolio effect

The ‘Artiste of the Year’ category at the 2024 TGMAs saw a fierce battle, particularly between Stonebwoy and King Promise.

But beyond the music, it was their unofficial PROs who ignited the real competition.

MC Portfolio, representing Stonebwoy, launched a strategic and aggressive media campaign across both traditional and digital platforms.

From radio and TV interviews to Twitter threads, he consistently reminded the public and industry stakeholders of Stonebwoy’s accolades and cultural influence.

On the other side, Efia Odo championed King Promise’s cause on social media, stirring debates and building momentum around his achievements.

When Stonebwoy finally clinched the title, the impact of MC Portfolio’s campaign was impossible to ignore.

In a rare moment of recognition, Stonebwoy brought him on stage during his acceptance speech, allowing him to speak and publicly acknowledging his role. In the weeks that followed, MC Portfolio was humorously dubbed the “Deputy Artiste of the Year.”

A new year, a new shift

Now, heading into TGMA 2025, the dynamics have evolved, and so have the allegiances.

MC Portfolio has switched sides and is now backing King Paluta, the Kumasi-based hitmaker behind tracks like Aseda and Makoma.

He believes 2025 is King Paluta’s moment and has thrown his full weight behind the campaign.

His strategy highlights King Paluta’s organic rise, cultural resonance, and mass appeal. Whether on TV panels or social media, Portfolio is working tirelessly to position his new client as the people’s choice for Artiste of the Year.

BHIM Nation’s new voice: Vida Adutwumwaa steps in

With MC Portfolio now out of the BHIM camp, a new voice has emerged: Vida Adutwumwaa.

As a seasoned media personality, Vida has taken the reins of Stonebwoy’s PR campaign.

She has been on a relentless media tour, from UTV to Onua TV and Okay FM, promoting his dominance and defending his place at the top.

Her approach is two-pronged: countering claims that Stonebwoy should step aside for younger artistes, while simultaneously spotlighting his achievements.

According to her, Stonebwoy deserves to make history as the first artiste to win Artiste of the Year back-to-back.

King Promise’s camp gets a new firebrand: Tilly Akua Nipaa

In King Promise’s corner, popular media figure Tilly Akua Nipaa has stepped in, taking over from Efia Odo.

Tilly has been unapologetically vocal on both social and traditional media. She has been using data, including King Promise’s record-breaking 10 nominations, as a major argument for why he deserves the crown.

She hasn’t hesitated to stir controversy either. Recently, she questioned Kweku Smoke’s inclusion in the Artiste of the Year race, claiming King Promise’s global presence and consistency put him in a league of his own.

The PR war that could decide it all

This year, artistes are doing less of the talking, leaving their PROs to lead the conversation, and it’s proving to be a game-changer.

With experienced voices like MC Portfolio, Vida Adutwumwaa, and the emerging Tilly Akua Nipaa at the forefront, the Artiste of the Year race has become more than a celebration of musical accomplishments. It’s now a communications battle.

Each PRO brings a distinct strategy:

MC Portfolio is banking on street credibility and grassroots appeal for King Paluta.

Vida Adutwumwaa is leveraging legacy and institutional presence to keep Stonebwoy on top.

Tilly Akua Nipaa is driving a fact-based, fan-fuelled campaign for King Promise.

As TGMA 2025 approaches, one thing is clear: the Artiste of the Year will not only be decided by the music, but it will also be won in the media trenches.

Appiah Stadium is a ‘security threat’

0

Appiah Stadium [L] and Kumchacha Appiah Stadium [L] and Kumchacha

The leader of Heaven’s Gate Ministries, Prophet Nicholas Osei, popularly known as Prophet Kumchacha, has described Frank Kwaku Appiah, also known as Appiah Stadium, as a security threat to President John Mahama.

He condemned Appiah Stadium’s seemingly aggressive approach towards President Mahama and other notable figures in public, which is sometimes seen as going against protocol.

Appiah Stadium, a confessed fanatic of President Mahama, has been open about his unconditional love for the president and the benefits he has gained through his relationship with President John Mahama and his brother, Ibrahim Mahama.

In a video shared on Facebook, Prophet Kumchacha urged the security apparatus to take Appiah Stadium’s conduct seriously, adding that it must not be overlooked.

“Appiah is misconducting himself and should be called to order by the National Security. I am very fine with President John Mahama, but I know when to get close to him. I may visit him at his home or the Jubilee House. A lot of people went to school with the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, but today, because of his position, his schoolmates cannot just walk up to him in public,” Kumchacha said.

“What Appiah Stadium is doing is a security threat. I have watched many of his videos, and I have called him but have not been able to reach him. There have been instances where the president is sitting in his car surrounded by his security detail, and Appiah Stadium will force his way to greet the president. I have seen a video where Appiah Stadium was chasing the president’s car as it moved, which is certainly a security threat. In this world, when your enemy wants to get to you, they use someone very close to you.”

Meanwhile, Ibrahim Mahama, President John Mahama’s brother and a business mogul, recently publicly scolded Appiah Stadium for his public approach towards President John Dramani Mahama.

In a viral video, Ibrahim Mahama is seen being ushered into a public function where he meets Appiah Stadium among the crowd. In a brief interaction with the activist, Ibrahim Mahama expressed concern over Appiah Stadium’s seemingly aggressive approach towards President John Mahama in public, stating, “It is not nice.”

The rest of their conversation, however, is unclear due to the loud music at the event and the cheering from the crowd.

Appiah Stadium was recently blocked from accessing President John Dramani Mahama when he attempted to approach the president at a funeral on February 7, 2025, at Burma Camp.

Mahama, who was among the dignitaries attending the funeral of the late Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Arnold Quainoo, was captured leaving the premises when Appiah Stadium attempted to approach him as he boarded his vehicle. However, military and police officers prevented him from getting close to the statesman.

Appiah Stadium was heard shouting his name to the president to get his attention. He later managed to get closer to the presidential vehicle when a staff member lowered the front passenger-side window to speak with him.

Consumer Protection Agency calls on PURC to suspend utility tariff increases

0

The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has urged the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to suspend its planned utility tariff adjustments until key consultative bodies are reinstated, and broader consumer engagement is carried out.

This follows a recent increment by the PURC on electricity tariffs by 14.75% and water tariffs by 4.02%, effective May 2, 2025.

In a statement issued by the CPA’s Director of Mediation and Arbitration, Nana Prempeh Okogyeabour Aduhene, the agency expressed concern that the PURC may not have conducted adequate consultations with consumers before approving the tariff hikes.

“We are calling on the PURC to, as a matter of urgency, put up these committees in place so that a proper consultation can be done before any tariff adjustments will be accepted by consumers,” the statement read.

The CPA emphasized the importance of the PURC’s Technical and External Committees, both of which, according to the agency, have not been reconstituted since the change in government.

The CPA explained that the Technical Committee plays a key role in evaluating utility tariff applications, including methodology, structure, and performance benchmarking.

The External Committee, established under Part 3, Section 31 of the PURC Act 1997 (Act 538), serves as a regional liaison between the Commission, utility providers, and consumers, offering feedback on service quality and consumer issues.

According to the CPA, these committees are essential for ensuring transparency and representation in regulatory decisions, particularly on matters directly affecting consumers.

“We strongly believe that the PURC didn’t do much consultation, and also the interest of consumers was not properly represented,” the statement added.

The agency also raised concerns about unresolved consumer complaints regarding electricity and water services, stressing that these issues should be addressed before any price adjustments are implemented.

“The PURC, per its mandate, is to ensure uninterrupted power supply 24/7 and reliable water services.”

Kankam Boadu fires Pooley’s family over alleged plot to petition Otumfuo over adopted kids

Veteran sports journalist Bright Kankam Boadu has criticised the family of the late Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Yaw Frimpong popularly known as Pooley over their plans to petition Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II regarding the adoption of the deceased’s children.

The Asantehene officially enrolled Pooley’s children onto his educational fund, easing the financial burden of their schooling and helping secure a brighter future for them.

However, reports suggest that some family members plan to petition Otumfuo to extend his support exclusively to the two biological children, thereby excluding the adopted ones.

In response, Boadu described the alleged move as unwise, considering the Asantehene’s generous support.

The 2025 Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Sports Journalist of the Year advised those behind the plot to ditch the idea, calling it foolish.

“Those planning to petition Otumfuo over the adoption of Pooley’s children, it’s stupidity of the highest order. You don’t need to be the biological father of a person to care for them. Since when did we get here? Those behind the plot, will Otumfuo use your money to cater for the children? This is foolishness,” he fumed while speaking on Pure FM.

He added, “The man adopted the kids due to Pooley’s service to Kotoko and the circumstances of his death. Yet, people have issues with that. The family head leading this charge is a bad person.”

Red tape keeps rural South Africans offline

0

Cell tower in Mthatha, Eastern Cape Cell tower in Mthatha, Eastern Cape

A company responsible for building cellphone towers in South Africa’s deep rural areas has highlighted how government bureaucracy is hindering full connectivity for poor rural communities.

Many villages, farms and periurban areas struggle to connect with the outside world due to a lack of cellphone signals.

This absence of connectivity has negatively affected small businesses, learning and teaching in schools.

Lack of connectivity negatively affecting rural businesses and schools

Sean Shipalana, director of Moropa Site Solutions, said it could take over a year to construct a single cell tower, which is a relatively small structure.

“We face a chain of delays – some administrative, some structural and some simply logistical,” he said.

Erecting a tower involved approval from government departments at the national, provincial and local levels.

These include permits from the Civil Aviation Authority, environmental clearance from the department of forestry, fisheries and the environment, consent approvals through municipal planning authorities and building plan approvals from local government.

Each step has its own timeline – often three to four months – making the cumulative delay difficult to manage.

However, the red tape is just one part of the challenge.

Red tape part of the problem

As mobile networks accelerate 5G roll-outs across South Africa rural communities continue to experience poor connectivity due to problems in getting infrastructure off the ground.

A study by Opensignal published in 2023 found that smartphone users experienced a 14.4% slower average download speed and 29.2% slower upload speed experience in rural areas than in urban areas.

The study also found that time spent with no signal was far higher in rural areas, with users in the Northern Cape and Limpopo recording the highest proportion of time with no signal.

Even rural areas of Qonce and Stutterheim in the Eastern Cape, which are nearer towns, still struggle with signal due to the lack of cellphone towers.

Staff shortages at municipalities also contributed to delays.

“Smaller municipalities that cover rural areas often face critical staffing shortages. Applications for building plans or zoning permissions can sit unattended for months, not because of inefficiency, but because there simply aren’t enough staff to process them,” he said.

Staff shortages also contribute to delays

The situation was complicated by the recent CAA requirement that obstacle assessments be conducted through two newly appointed service providers: Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) and Tsela Obstacle Safeguarding (Pty) Ltd.

“Often mobile network operators change plans and cancel their leases with tower operators when the permitting process takes more than a year.”

“When this happens, not only is the costly application process in vain, but a local community that had been waiting in anticipation does not get the tower they need to service their area.”

Stray cattle will be slaughtered and used to feed prisoners

0

The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has issued a strong warning to cattle rearers, stating that effective May 1, stray cattle found causing a nuisance in the city will be seized, slaughtered, and used to feed inmates at the Kumasi Central Prison.

Addressing a news conference in Kumasi, the Mayor said the decision is a response to the growing problem of cattle roaming freely and disrupting public life—an issue he described as unworthy of the city’s stature.

He urged all herders to keep their animals out of the metropolis to avoid severe consequences.

“There is another thing I will want you to help me look at. If you have cattle and if they stray in the vicinity of KMA, be assured that from May 1, they will be killed and given to Kumasi Central Prison for food. Especially the route from the airport through to Manhyia Palace.

“I cannot sit for visitors come to Kumasi [and] from the airport to Manhyia, and all they see are faecal matter from cattle.”

IMF, Ghana Reach Staff-Level Deal on Credit Review

0

End-of-Mission press releases include statements of IMF staff teams that convey preliminary findings after a visit to a country. The views expressed in this statement are those of the IMF staff and do not necessarily represent the views of the IMF’s Executive Board. Based on the preliminary findings of this mission, staff will prepare a report that, subject to management approval, will be presented to the IMF’s Executive Board for discussion and decision.

  • IMF staff and the Ghanaian authorities have reached staff-level agreement on a package of economic policies and reforms to conclude the fourth review of the 36-month ECF-supported program. Once the review is approved by the IMF Executive Board, Ghana will have access to about US$370 million in financing.
  • Notwithstanding higher-than-expected growth and a further significant improvement in Ghana’s external position last year, program performance deteriorated markedly at end-2024. Fiscal slippages in the run-up to the elections led to a large accumulation of payables; inflation exceeded program targets; and several reforms were delayed.
  • Since the beginning of the year, the new authorities have taken bold measures to address policy and reform slippages and ensure achievement of program objectives. This includes enacting a strong budget and public financial management reforms; tightening monetary policy; and adjusting electricity prices.

Accra, Ghana: An International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff team, led by Mr. Stéphane Roudet, Mission Chief for Ghana, held meetings in Accra from April 2 to April 15, 2025, to discuss progress on the authorities’ policy and reform priorities in the context of the fourth review of Ghana’s three-year program under the Extended Credit Facility. The arrangement was approved by the IMF Executive Board for a total amount of SDR 2.242 billion (about US$ 3 billion) on May 17, 2023.

At the end of the mission, Mr. Roudet issued the following statement:

“IMF staff and the Ghanaian authorities have reached a staff-level agreement on the fourth review of Ghana’s economic program under the Extended Credit Facility arrangement. This staff-level agreement is subject to Executive Board consideration. Upon completion of the Executive Board review, Ghana would have access to SDR 267.5 million (about US$370 million), bringing the total IMF financial support disbursed under the arrangement, since May 2023, to SDR 1,708 million (about US$2,355 million).

“Growth in 2024 was higher than expected, underpinned by strong mining and construction activity. The external sector has seen a considerable improvement, driven by solid exports—particularly gold and to a lesser extent oil—and higher remittances. As a result, international reserves accumulation has far exceeded the ECF-supported program targets.

“Notwithstanding these achievements, overall performance under the IMF-supported program deteriorated markedly at end-2024. Preliminary fiscal data point to slippages in the run-up to the 2024 general elections, on account of a large accumulation of payables. Inflation exceeded program targets. Several reforms and policy actions were delayed across the fiscal, financial, and energy sectors.

“Against this backdrop, the new authorities have taken bold measures to address policy slippages and ensure the program objectives remain within reach. On the fiscal front, the government has launched an audit of the payables to firm up the size and nature of the slippages. Based on preliminary estimates of new payables, the primary balance posted a deficit of some 3¼ percent of GDP (compared to a targeted surplus of ½ percent of GDP). To address these slippages, the authorities have enacted a 2025 budget that targets a 1½ percent of GDP primary surplus and adopted several public financial management reforms. The latter includes an enhanced fiscal responsibility framework and new rules to tighten expenditure commitments.

“Discussions with the authorities centered on possible additional measures needed to address structural weaknesses in the public financial management and procurement systems as well as steps to ensure fiscal execution remains consistent with program objectives. Engagement with the authorities also focused on measures aimed at strengthening key social protection programs to cushion the most vulnerable from the impact of high inflation and ongoing policy adjustment.

“The Bank of Ghana has recently increased its policy rate and is reviewing its liquidity management operations. The ensuing tightening in the monetary policy stance, together with the ongoing fiscal consolidation, is expected to bring inflation down.

“The mission also engaged the authorities on their wide-ranging structural reform program, with a focus on enhancing governance and transparency and strengthening State-Owned Enterprises management in the gold, cocoa, and energy sector. On the latter, the resumption of quarterly electricity tariff adjustments, combined with structural reforms, will help reduce the energy sector shortfall and stop the accumulation of new arrears. Financial stability is being maintained as recapitalization progresses and the authorities are committed to strengthening public banks.

“Ghana remains committed to completing its comprehensive public debt restructuring to restore sustainability. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ghana’s Official Creditors Committee (OCC) under the G20 Common Framework has been signed by all parties, and the focus is now on finalizing the bilateral agreements to implement the MoU. The authorities are also pursuing good-faith efforts in reaching an agreement with other commercial creditors on a debt treatment that is in line with program parameters and the comparability of treatment principles.”

IMF staff met with Finance Minister Forson, Bank of Ghana Governor Asiama, and their teams, as well as representatives from various government agencies, and other stakeholders. The IMF team would like to express its gratitude to the Ghanaian authorities and other counterparts for their continued open and constructive engagement.

Ghana needs $25m to import vaccines – Health Minister discloses

0

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has disclosed that the government will require approximately $25 million to procure all necessary vaccines for the country this year.

Mr. Akandoh expressed concern over the gradual withdrawal of donor support in Ghana’s health sector, describing the trend as troubling.

This development follows funding cuts to USAID by former U.S. President Donald Trump—cuts that have significantly affected the supply of essential drugs and financial support to Ghana’s healthcare system.

Speaking at a meeting with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana on Monday, April 14, Mr. Akandoh said the government is left with no alternative due to the dwindling aid.

“It is instructive to note that at this point in time, our partners who assist us in procuring most of our vaccines are gradually fading. This year alone, we need not less than $25 million to import vaccines into this country,” he stated.

Ghana’s growing democracy is a positive sign – Miracles Aboagye

0

Director of Communications for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 elections, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has expressed confidence in the growing strength of Ghana’s democracy, describing it as a positive sign for the country’s political future.

He emphasised the important role of the electorate and opposition parties in shaping this ongoing democratic development.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr Aboagye highlighted the maturation of Ghana’s democracy, noting that one of the key indicators of this growth is the electorate’s ability to make decisions based on their evolving needs and aspirations.

“Ghanaian democracy is growing, and that’s a good thing,” he said.

“It’s a positive sign when millions of people can vote in one direction during an election and, in another, change their support based on their changing hopes and expectations. For me, that is the true strength of democracy — it allows the people to make their voices heard and choose what’s best for them,” he added.

Mr Aboagye also stressed that democracy is not just about elections, but about the ongoing responsibilities of political parties, particularly the opposition, in holding the government accountable and offering credible alternatives.

“Our job as an opposition party is to continually fulfil the responsibility that our democracy and multi-party system places on us,” he explained. “We must provide credible alternatives to everything the government is doing, so the people can evaluate those options and make informed decisions.”

“The people must always have options,” he concluded. “Our role is to ensure they have alternatives that align with their values, needs, and hopes for the future.”

Sam Nartey George, the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations has stated a golden opportunity was lost at his vetting before the appointment committee.

‘State institutions must be resourced, work in union to clamp down on illegal mining’

0

The fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey will remain futile unless state institutions on the frontlines are adequately resourced and work in unison.

Each agency has legitimate concerns, but they are struggling to act due to lack of support and coordination, National Director of A Rocha Ghana said.

Speaking at a multi-stakeholder meeting held at Asiakwa last Monday that brought together key actors from the Ghana Immigration Service, Police Service, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Water Resources Commission, and the Forestry Commission, Dr Bosu painted a grim picture of institutional disconnect and logistical constraints hampering efforts to address the illegal mining menace.

The engagement formed part of a broader initiative aimed at bridging the gap between national policy and community-level realities to promote a more coordinated and well-resourced response to galamsey.

“This meeting is to bring all stakeholders to the table to reflect on the growing threat of galamsey, which is spiraling out of control,” Dr Bosu said.

He highlighted critical challenges such as institutional disconnect and severe logistical constraints.

The Forestry Commission for instance, frequently raises alarms about illegal mining in forest reserves but often lacks the police support to enforce regulations.

Similarly, the Water Resources Commission receives reports on water pollution but lacks the authority and tools to take action.

“Even the police say they are outnumbered and poorly equipped. How do we expect real enforcement under such circumstances?” he questioned.

Dr Bosu also expressed concern over the Minerals Commission, which reportedly granted mining concessions without informing local communities or engaging stakeholders, further eroding trust at the grassroots level.

He criticised Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which permitted mining in forest reserves and it sent the wrong signal and undermine conservation efforts.

He called for its repeal and a review of Ghana’s mining laws to align them with environmental protection goals.

“If the forestry officers are complaining, the police lack logistics, the EPA is sidelined, and the Minerals Commission is not communicating, how can we win this fight?” he asked and added that “we need to support each institution and work together.”

Dr Bosu emphasised the need to involve the media in setting the national agenda and amplifying anti-galamsey campaigns.

Echoing these concerns, Dr Clement Sarfo-Nyarko, a lecturer in Security, Development, and Leadership in Africa at King’s College London, noted that efforts to curb illegal mining had failed due to the lack of synergy among actors.

According to him, state agencies often operated in silos without a shared vision, allowing illegal miners to exploit institutional weaknesses.

“We are giving the award based on merit of hard work. It is not a family property, it is not heritance. Under the 2024 review, when Stonebwoy took the artiste of the year award, he worked harder like an underground artiste.”

People arrested under Akufo-Addo over Facebook posts

0

The arrest and detention of a social media activist associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mohammed Amadou Zakou, following a Facebook post containing controversial remarks about Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has sparked significant backlash.

The NPP has strongly criticised the move, accusing the administration of President John Dramani Mahama of attempting to suppress dissent and undermine freedom of expression through intimidation and criminalisation.

However, the NPP’s concerns have also drawn criticism, as some Ghanaians have pointed to similar instances of arrests and detentions of individuals during the previous administration led by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Several individuals were arrested under the previous administration for making comments and social media posts critical of the government and its leadership.

Furthermore, the NPP’s outcry over Zakou’s arrest and detention, following his post about the Vice President, which included the phrase “rest well” accompanied by crying and sad emojis suggesting her demise, has ignited discussions around perceived double standards and political hypocrisy in Ghana’s political landscape.

Here are some Ghanaians who were arrested for statements they made:

ASEPA’s Mensah Thompson

Mensah Thompson, Executive Director of the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), was arrested by the Ghana Police Service for alleging that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his relatives had used the presidential aircraft of the Ghana Armed Forces for a shopping trip to the United Kingdom in December 2021.

On January 7, 2022, Thompson posted an allegation on his Facebook page, the first two paragraphs of which read:

“So between the 20th and 30th of December, 2021… during the Christmas, the children of a close relative of the President took Ghana’s Presidential Jet, the Falcon EX jet, on a trip to the UK just for Christmas shopping.

“They didn’t go alone; they went with their friends and partied in the sky all through the trip, taking snap videos and flaunting their lucky adventure.”

Thompson later retracted his claims and rendered an unqualified apology for spreading false information, after the Ghana Armed Forces debunked the story and asked the public to disregard it.

Despite the apology, he was arrested and charged with the publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace. He was later granted bail of GH¢50,000.

Accra FM’s Bobie Ansah

Kwabena Bobie Ansah, host of the Citizen Show on Accra FM, was arrested on Thursday, February 11, 2022, and detained at the Nima Police Station.

According to a brief statement by the Ghana Police Service on Friday, January 11, 2022, his arrest was in connection with an “alleged case of publication of false news and offensive conduct.”

The police indicated that Bobie Ansah had turned down several invitations to assist with investigations.

His arrest reportedly followed allegations he made on live radio against First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo, accusing her of appropriating state lands for her private foundation.

“Do you know that Rebecca Akufo-Addo and Samira have appropriated for themselves the aviation lands?” he asked during the programme.

“As I speak to you today, there are Chinese nationals working on the aviation lands that were acquired by Kwame Nkrumah for the state… Rebecca Akufo-Addo has had the guts to apportion the state land to herself and is putting up a project in the name of her foundation – an NGO,” he alleged.

Media General’s Captain Smart

Broadcast journalist Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, was arrested twice in 2022. One of the arrests was linked to statements he made against President Nana Akufo-Addo and his administration.

On Wednesday, October 19, 2022, he was arrested by officials of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) on his way home from work.

Prior to his arrest, the Ministry of Information had accused Captain Smart of impugning the character of the president during a broadcast aired on October 17, 2022, where he alleged that President Akufo-Addo was actively involved in illegal mining (galamsey).

The Ministry described his claims as false and malicious, and further accused him of engaging in unethical and irresponsible journalism.

After his release, Captain Smart confirmed that the arrest was indeed linked to his allegations against the president.

Salamatu Mohammed – Mother of four

On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, Salamatu Mohammed, a mother of four, was arrested for wishing death upon President Nana Akufo-Addo in a viral video.

In the video, which was widely circulated on social media, Salamatu criticised the president over Ghana’s economic hardship and questioned why witches and ritualists from the northern regions had not yet killed him.

“Akufo-Addo, we are begging you in the name of God. We cannot even afford pots to cook our food. Do you want us to use your head to cook?

“The price of an aluminium cooking pot has increased from GH¢600 to GH¢1,200. Why?

“God will punish you. The witches in Ghana and the ritualists from the north—can’t you kill this man? I have four children. Do you know the feeding fees I pay?”

According to her lawyer, Gideon Koku Abotsi, Salamatu was arrested due to the viral video but was later released without being charged. The police said they were investigating the matter further.

Oheneba Boamah Bennie

Oheneba Boamah Bennie, a journalist with Accra-based Power FM, was sentenced in 2022 by the Accra High Court to 14 days in Nsawam Prison after being found guilty of contempt of court.

He was arrested for alleging in a Facebook video that President Nana Akufo-Addo had met with eight Supreme Court judges to influence their decision in the 2020 presidential election petition filed by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

On December 14, 2021, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service arrested him in Accra. He was being investigated for allegedly insulting and issuing threats against the president in the video.

In addition to the prison sentence, Oheneba was fined GH¢3,000.

Gold Fields added that it remains in dialogue with the government in hopes of reaching an outcome that serves the interests of all stakeholders.

I didn’t work on my age from the beginning

Former Hearts of Oak winger, Torric Jabrin Former Hearts of Oak winger, Torric Jabrin

Former Hearts of Oak winger, Torric Jabrin, has expressed disappointment over not adjusting his age at the beginning of his journey.

In an interview with Gil Media on YouTube, the Ghanaian footballer asserted that his age has become a significant barrier, limiting his chances of continuing at a high level in the sport.

“I’m still playing, and I want to play for the next two to three years,” Jabrin said.

“Just that my age. I didn’t work on the age at the beginning. If I mention my age and you see me playing, you’d say, ‘No, no, I should be 22.’”

He disclosed that he is currently 32 years old, which he claims is considered “too much” for an African footballer looking to compete professionally.

“But now, I’m 32 years old, which is too much for an African. I didn’t get the support or management that could manage my things well,” he lamented.

However, available data from Google states that Torric Jabrin was born on January 14, 1991, which would make him 34 years old.

Throughout his professional journey, Jabrin played for clubs across several countries, including Turkey, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, DR Congo, Maldives, and Egypt. Notable among the teams he featured for are Hearts of Oak, Trabzonspor, TP Mazembe, and Al Masry.

Presidential candidates need at least $150m to win elections in Ghana

0

The Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has revealed that it costs an estimated $150 million to win a presidential election in Ghana, and approximately $600,000 to secure a parliamentary seat.

According to the CDD, the high financial demands of political campaigns are a major driver of corruption in the country.

Director of Programmes at CDD-Ghana, Dr. Kojo Asante, expressed deep concern about the situation during a presentation to the Constitutional Review Committee.

“When political actors, appointed or elected, enter government having spent excessive amounts of money from internal party processes to national elections, CDD estimates that it costs approximately $650,000—that is about GH¢10 million—to be able to win a parliamentary seat. And between 100 million to 150 million to win the presidency,” he stated.

“This financial burden creates a perversed incentive for office holders to want to recoup campaign expenditure through corrupt means,” Dr. Asante added.

GAF embark on ‘surgical’ anti-galamsey operations [Photos]

0

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have commenced a series of targeted anti-galamsey operations across all three Commands in a renewed effort to clamp down on illegal mining activities in protected areas.

These “surgical” operations, aimed at minimising collateral damage while dealing effectively with the menace, form part of a broader national strategy to preserve the environment and water bodies.

May be an image of 4 people and text

The operations were carefully coordinated to tackle galamsey operations simultaneously across the Northern, Central, and Southern Commands.

In the Northern Command, the military focused its operations in Bole and along the Black Volta Basin, areas which have seen a surge in illegal mining activities in recent months.

The troops were tasked with dismantling mining camps and seizing equipment used by the illegal operators.

These interventions are expected to curb the continued pollution of vital water bodies and protect farmlands that have been adversely affected by the destructive mining practices.

The Central Command’s operation was concentrated within the Nkawie and Mankranso Forest Reserves, where several galamsey sites were uncovered.

Troops moved in swiftly to destroy makeshift shelters used by the miners and seize excavators and other mining machinery found at the scene.

These forest reserves, known for their ecological importance, have been under threat from illegal mining, and the GAF’s actions were welcomed by local authorities and environmental groups.

Meanwhile, the Southern Command carried out similar operations in the Jerusalem enclave and the Subri Forest Reserve.

The operations led to the seizure of multiple excavators and related equipment, as well as the demolition of illegal structures erected by miners within the reserves.

The GAF reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s forest reserves and water bodies, and urged the public to support the ongoing fight against illegal mining.

Trump freezes $2.2bn for Harvard after policy dispute

0

The Trump administration has announced it will freeze $2.2 billion in federal grants and $60 million in contracts for Harvard University after the school refused to implement policy changes demanded by the administration.

Last week, a federal task force sent Harvard a letter outlining new requirements to maintain its federal funding. These included ending diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs, banning masks at campus protests, enforcing merit-based admissions and hiring, and reducing the influence of faculty viewed as politically active.

Harvard rejected the demands, saying it would not compromise its independence or constitutional rights.

President Alan Garber said, “We will not surrender our independence or constitutional rights,” adding that most of the demands amounted to government overreach into academic freedom.

A White House spokesperson defended the freeze, saying federal money should not fund institutions “supporting racial discrimination or racially motivated violence,” and stated the administration is committed to “Making Higher Education Great Again” by combating antisemitism and enforcing Title VI regulations.

Harvard faculty and the American Association of University Professors have filed a lawsuit and are seeking a temporary restraining order to block the funding freeze. The lawsuit argues the administration is violating the First Amendment and attempting to dictate university policy.

The university, with an endowment of $53.2 billion, is now at the center of a growing standoff between elite academic institutions and the federal government.

We are restructuring and rebuilding our party-Miracle Aboagye

0

The Communications Director of the 2024 Bawumia campaign, Dennis Miracle Aboagye, says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is undergoing a restructuring process aimed at strengthening the party for the future.

Speaking on Joy News’ AM Show, Mr Aboagye explained that the party is currently in a phase of rebuilding. He highlighted that as part of this process, there are certain actions that need to be taken, as well as others that should be avoided.

One key aspect he stressed is that internal party issues should not be discussed in the public domain, particularly in the way some individuals have done.

“We’ve engaged with those involved and reminded them that, yes, you may have slipped, but for now, we need to hold our horses. And I believe that’s the approach everyone should take,” he said.

He further acknowledged that the NPPP is a large organisation and that occasional setbacks are inevitable.

“It’s fine for that to happen,” he said. “From time to time, people will slip, and that’s okay. What’s important is that we learn and move forward.”

He also questioned the value of discussing internal matters publicly, especially when it comes to their campaign and the party’s progress.

“Why should we be discussing what happened within our party or how our campaign went on television?” He asked. “How does that benefit the viewer?

“The viewer doesn’t care about that. The viewers are more interested in the alternatives we are offering as a political party, whether it’s in addressing economic issues, healthcare, or education.”

Mr Aboagye reiterated that the party’s focus should be on offering tangible solutions to the nation’s pressing challenges rather than engaging in public disputes.

“At the end of the day, the public wants to know what alternatives we can bring to the table to address the issues they face, not the internal struggles of the party,” he said.

As part of the rebuilding process, he urged party members to be patient and supportive of the ongoing restructuring process, adding, “Hold your horses for now,” as we continue to work on rebuilding the NPP and preparing for its future successes.

Ghana ready to take over Damang mine after Gold Fields’ exit – Minerals Commission

0

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Isaac Tandoh, has affirmed Ghana’s readiness to assume full control of the Damang Mine following the government’s decision not to renew Gold Fields’ mining lease, which expires in April 2025.

Speaking on the future of the site on the Citi Breakfast Show on April 15, 2025, Mr. Tandoh stressed that while the country continues to welcome foreign investments, mining agreements cannot last indefinitely.

“We support foreign investments, but agreement cannot be in perpetuity. At a point in time, certain things will have to revert to normal. So, those who have an agreement, we will support them to do their work, but when the agreement is over, and you have a better proposition, we will look at it. If not, we will take over the place,” he stated.

When asked what Ghana intends to do with the Damang mine after Gold Fields’ departure, Mr. Tandoh stated bluntly, “We will run it.”

He dismissed concerns over Ghana’s capacity to manage the mine, indicating that there are several unmined smaller pits within the Damang concession that local expertise can immediately begin working on.

To him, the country can, over time, revisit and strategise on developing the larger capital-intensive parts of the mine, which Gold Fields has delayed investing in since 2018.

He also highlighted that the technical know-how required for mining is not in short supply locally.

“People have been talking about capacity and capital and all… there are smaller pits they didn’t complete in mining them out, we can commence mining. We have a lot of local capacity rock shove, BCMs, engineers and planners; all these guys are in there that we can use to start the mining. Then we can get to the drawing board and strategise the big capital which they have been differing since 2018, to see how we can come back,” he stated.

“The whole of the Damang stretch it is only one expatriate that is running. In Tarkwa, Ghanaians are running them and same as Ahafo. So the issue of human capacity or technical knowhow is neither here nor there,” he stated.

Tandoh further revealed that all discussions held so far point to a state-led operation of the Damang Mine after Gold Fields’ exit.

“In all the meetings I have been in and all the discussions I have had, we are looking at the state running the mine. No individual will be made to do that,” he added.

We should be careful about how we attempt to politicise galamsey – Miracles Aboagye

0

Denis Miracles Aboagye, Communications Director for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 elections, has cautioned against the politicisation of the illegal mining menace, popularly known as galamsey, warning that it could undermine efforts to tackle the problem effectively.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show, Aboagye expressed concern about the escalating situation, describing it as a national crisis that requires a unified and strategic approach.

“Galamsey is a social canker, it is a menace that if you politicise the country will be extinguished and so we should be careful the manner we attempt to politicise galamsey,” he said.

While acknowledging the severity of the problem, Mr Aboagye blamed President John Mahama and the entire National Democratic Congress (NDC) for not doing enough to tackle the menace.

“Sometimes when I wake up and I see galamsey issues, the way this government is struggling with it, I feel like let us laugh at them.

We told them that it is wrong for them to go and stand on a campaign trail as a presidential candidate and tell the people that ‘I don’t see the reason why the NPP would come and arrest them, people in the pit and that when I come to the office I will release you all the galamseyers’, that is what he (John Mahama) said, ” he claimed.

Mr Aboagye’s comments come amid growing public frustration over the escalating situation of illegal mining activities, which have continued to cause significant environmental degradation despite various interventions and pledges by political leaders.

Share prices of dominant stocks rally GSE in Q1

0

This trend was driven largely by the performance of a few dominant stocks This trend was driven largely by the performance of a few dominant stocks

Trading on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) in the first quarter of 2025 was characterised by a sharp drop in volumes but a significant increase in value traded, as investors shifted capital into higher-priced equities.

This trend was driven largely by the performance of a few dominant stocks in the financial, telecom, energy and consumer goods sectors.

According to GSE’s March 2025 Equities Market Report, total number of shares traded in the quarter was 61.3 million – representing a 75.87 percent decline compared to 254.2 million shares in the same period of 2024.

Despite the lower activity, value of trades rose to GH¢473.2million; a 29.28 percent increase year-on-year.

This divergence reflects a broader shift in investor strategy. Market participants are focusing more on quality stocks with stronger fundamentals rather than on speculative high-volume trades. Analysts say this marks a transition in GSE’s development, with valuation taking priority over volume.

Speaking to the trend, Kofi Kyei Busia – a market analyst with the Young Investors Network (YIN) explained: “The higher the share price the more it contributes to value, even with lower volumes. Let me give you some exact figures – we have a report I can share. As of March 2025, Gold ETFs topped the chart in terms of value traded – about GH¢139million, which represented roughly 9 percent of total value traded. MTN followed with GH¢46.9million, then came Access Bank which accounted for about 4.8 percent”.

He added that, by volume, MTN led with 14.8 million shares traded, followed by CAL Bank with 2.6 million, ETI with 2.3 million and Access Bank with about 600,000 shares.

“Interestingly, despite the relatively lower volume, Access Bank still ranked in the top-three by value because of its higher share price,” Busia noted.

The GSE Financial Stock Index (GSE-FSI) gained 28.5 percent in the quarter, slightly ahead of the GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) which climbed 27.19 percent.

The financial sector’s strong performance was led by a few standout banks. CAL Bank and Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) recorded triple-digit share price increases, driven by improved 2024 earnings and positive guidance for 2025. Access Bank and SIC Insurance also posted strong double-digit gains.

MTN Ghana, the most capitalised stock on the exchange, maintained its place as a key driver of trade value. Although total volumes were lower compared to previous quarters, MTN’s consistent dividend payouts and expansion into fintech have sustained investor interest. The telecom giant led the market in volume traded and was second in terms of value traded during the quarter.

Energy stock TotalEnergies also performed strongly, posting a share price gain of 83.54 percent. It remained one of the key contributors to market value despite limited trading volumes.

In the consumer goods sector, Fan Milk and Guinness Ghana saw renewed interest. Both companies benefitted from internal operational changes and export expansion strategies. Although their trading volumes were modest, the higher share prices of these stocks made them significant contributors to overall market value.

In March alone, GSE recorded 22 million shares traded – an 89.48 percent drop from the 208.7 million shares recorded in March 2024. The value of trades for the month stood at GH¢201.9million, down 35.59 percent year-on-year. This pattern continued the quarterly trend of lower volume but higher value activity.

Average daily trading volume for the first quarter dropped to 1.02 million shares, compared to 4.09 million in Q1 2024. However, average daily value traded increased to GH¢7.89million. The data suggest that even though fewer shares are changing hands, those that do are of higher market value.

Market capitalisation reached GH¢136.99billion at the end of March 2025, up 23.03 percent since start of the year. Domestic market capitalisation increased by 26.98 percent to GH¢78.57billion, driven by gains in large-cap domestic stocks.

An additional factor influencing the shift toward equities is government policy on the bond market. According to market analysts, liquidity that once went into government debt instruments is now moving into equities. Government has taken a more aggressive stance in Treasury auctions, with some bids rejected outright if they specify interest rates. This has forced many investors to look for alternative investment options – leading them to the stock market.

“This change in the debt market has played a major role,” said one analyst. “Investors are no longer guaranteed favourable yields in the Treasury market so they are rebalancing into equities, especially those with strong fundamentals and reliable dividend payments.”

Market watchers argue that although the drop in trading volumes might raise liquidity concerns, the rise in value traded shows capital is being allocated more efficiently. This signals a maturing investment environment where fundamentals matter more than speculation.

The ongoing shift is also being supported by improved access to financial information and growing investor education. As institutional and retail investors alike become more valuation-conscious, fewer but more meaningful trades are beginning to shape the market’s direction.

My Husband Gives Me Only GHC4,000 Monthly And Feels It’s Enough To Worship Him

0

A Ghanaian woman’s anonymous post about her marital financial woes has ignited fierce discussions on social media after she questioned whether her husband’s GHC 4,000 monthly contribution adequately covers their family’s needs. The mother of two shared her frustrations on the women’s platform Ohemaa, revealing the growing tension in her marriage over money matters.

The wife explained that her husband earns GHC 8,000 monthly but keeps half for himself while expecting her to manage all daily household expenses with the remaining GHC 4,000. This includes covering their children’s daily school expenses of GHC 70, which amounts to roughly GHC 1,400 monthly, plus providing all meals for the family including breakfast.

In her emotional post, she wrote: “He drops GHC 4,000 and feels it’s enough reason for me to worship him. Out of that, I also cook and provide breakfast for us. The amount he gives me is sincerely not enough. I’m struggling and can’t even complain because he feels he’s doing enough.”

While acknowledging her husband covers school fees (paid per term), utilities, and some savings, she argued these intermittent expenses don’t justify what she sees as an unfair distribution of funds. “He earns Ghc8,000 and keeps the entire half to himself. Out of that, he pays only fees (once a term), electricity, and water and claims to save some. So why can’t I have enough to feel comfortable? I feel he should give me at least 5K or 6K,” she explained.

The financial strain has taken an emotional toll on their marriage, with the wife confessing: “I’ve sincerely not been happy with him… If I’m struggling to manage, how can I be happy? He can’t understand that I need more.”

The post has divided public opinion, with some commenters sympathizing with the wife’s predicament while others criticized her demands. Supporters argue that GHC 4,000 is insufficient for a family’s monthly needs, especially when the husband keeps half his salary. Critics counter that many women receive no financial support from their husbands and that she should be more grateful.

She concluded her message re-emphasizing how she the situation makes her feel and sought opinions to make her husband understand her plight. “I feel really bad sometimes please can you guys say something so I share with him to understand how to treat a woman?”

The platform has maintained anonymity for all parties involved in accordance with its community guidelines. The widespread engagement with this post demonstrates how financial dynamics remain one of the most challenging aspects of modern marriage.

Govt will push, press until Ghana gets zero US tariffs

Professional Office Wear For Women

0

In the corporate world, dressing professionally is not just a matter of style, but it also reflects your attitude and competence. Women have a variety of options when it comes to office attire, and finding the right balance between being stylish and professional can be a challenging task. However, with some guidance, women can create a wardrobe that is both appropriate and chic for the workplace.

First and foremost, it is important to understand the dress code of your office. Some workplaces have a more formal dress code that requires suits and tailored pieces, while others may have a business casual policy that allows for more flexibility. Regardless of the dress code, it is always best to err on the side of caution and dress more conservatively until you get a better sense of what is appropriate in your workplace.

When it comes to professional office wear for women, tailored pieces are key. A well-fitted blazer can instantly elevate any outfit and give you a polished look. Pairing it with a blouse, tailored pants, or a pencil skirt can create a sophisticated and professional ensemble. Invest in high-quality fabrics and classic pieces that will stand the test of time and can be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits.

When choosing colors for your office wardrobe, it is best to stick to neutral tones such as black, navy, grey, and white. These colors are versatile and can be easily mixed with other pieces in your wardrobe. If you want to add a pop of color, opt for subtle accents like a colorful scarf or a statement accessory.

Accessories play a crucial role in completing your professional look. A classic pair of pumps, a structured handbag, and minimal jewelry can add the finishing touches to your outfit. Remember that less is more when it comes to accessories, so choose pieces that complement your outfit without overpowering it.

In conclusion, professional office wear for women is all about projecting a polished and competent image. By investing in quality pieces, paying attention to fit and tailoring, and choosing classic and versatile items, women can create a stylish and professional wardrobe that will make a lasting impression in the workplace. Remember to dress for the job you want, not the job you have, and let your attire reflect your confidence and professionalism.

Gold Fields ignored Damang lease extension talks

0

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Isaac Tandoh, has revealed that Gold Fields Limited failed to comply with explicit instructions to engage the Commission regarding the extension of its Damang Mining Lease, which is set to expire on April 18, 2025.

This disclosure follows the government’s decision to reject the mining giant’s application for a lease extension and its directive for the company to cease operations and vacate the site upon expiration of the current lease.

The development has cast uncertainty over the future of one of Ghana’s most established gold mining operations.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, Mr. Tandoh stated that Gold Fields was instructed to present improved terms that would ensure better value for Ghanaians but instead bypassed the Minerals Commission and communicated directly with the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources.

“When we met the minister, he said that we cannot continue this as business as usual, we need to get value for money. So, if you have any better proposition for Ghanaians, go and sit with the Minerals Commission, but that has not happened. Instead they were writing letters to the minister here and there. It was a clear instruction,” Tandoh said.

“We asked them to go and see the Minerals Commission if they had a better proposition for Ghana but they have not done that. Instead, they were writing letters and, I’m sure it will come up and you will see the tone they used,” he added.

In response, Gold Fields has indicated that it is still engaging with government authorities to reach a solution that serves all parties.

“The Company continues to seek ongoing engagement with the Government to secure the best outcome for all stakeholders,” it said in a statement.

‘Presidency is not a throne of privilege’ – CDM tells Mahama

0

The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has delivered a sobering assessment of President John Dramani Mahama’s first 100 days in office, warning that the country stands at a “crucial crossroads” between democratic renewal and political relapse.

In a statement, the governance watchdog assigned the Mahama administration a performance score of just 4 out of 10, arguing that “much more is expected than has been delivered.”

The CDM’s statement was both urgent and unflinching, urging the President to set aside comfort and face Ghana’s mounting challenges with decisive leadership.

“The presidency, in any democratic society, is not a throne of privilege but a platform of responsibility,” the statement read.
“It is not enough for a leader to avoid conflict or maintain decorum; leadership must be felt through action, tested through adversity, and proven through transformation.”

While the group acknowledged that President Mahama’s early days in office were marked by political calm — citing his “calm demeanor, initial outreach, and respect for institutional continuity” — it said these positive optics had been overshadowed by persistent national challenges, including “political victimisation, erratic power supply, fiscal profligacy, and creeping executive overreach.”

The CDM painted a grim portrait of Ghana’s broader landscape, listing deepening inequality, environmental degradation, threats to judicial independence, economic vulnerability, and public sector dysfunction as critical concerns.

“Ghana’s challenges cannot be solved through rhetoric, symbolism, or partisan maneuvering,” the group stressed.

Beyond its critique, the CDM offered a roadmap for action, calling on Mahama to rise to the moment and become the “transformational leader that this critical juncture demands.”

Among its key demands were:

  • Curtailing political retribution and upholding the sanctity of the civil service.

  • Safeguarding judicial independence by resisting attempts to manipulate constitutional checks.

  • Rescuing Ghana from fiscal recklessness through prudent, pro-poor budgeting.

  • Combating corruption and illegal mining with decisive, transparent action.

  • Ensuring energy security through innovation, investment, and integrity — rather than privatization.

  • Restoring public confidence in security agencies through lawful, accountable, and humane operations.

“These are not just political ideals,” the statement emphasized. “They are democratic imperatives.”

The CDM cautioned that the President’s honeymoon period had officially ended and warned that the window for excuses was closing fast.

“History is watching. The people are watching. The world is watching. And as the clock ticks beyond the 100-day mark, the demand for action grows louder.”

The statement concluded with a challenge to President Mahama to break from the status quo and chart a new course for the nation.

“Let President Mahama demonstrate that this term will not be a repeat of the past, but a courageous break from it. Let him lead not as a caretaker of partisan ambition, but as a custodian of national destiny.”

Media personality and entertainment pundit, DJ Slim, has called out the founder and presiding bishop of Lighthouse Chapel International, Dag Heward-Mills, over his recent remarks about not paying church members for playing musical instruments.

In a widely circulated sermon, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills firmly stated that he does not support compensating musicians within the church.

“Watch out for people who do things for money,” he said. “In my church, I said I’m not going to pay people to play instruments because I play all the instruments. I play drums, piano, and guitar,” he stated.

Reacting to the statement during a discussion on the ‘Street Is Watching’ podcast on April 14, 2025, DJ Slim questioned the logic behind the bishop’s stance.

“If he knows how to play every instrument, then he should go ahead and play them all himself. Even the Bible says a man should eat from his toil. So if he expects someone to render a service in his church but chooses not to pay them, that raises serious questions,” he stated.

He further argued that churches, in many ways, operate as businesses and should therefore pay members who contribute their time and skills to the ministry.

“Until when will we admit that the church is a business? Every single church is a business. At the end of every Sunday, money is collected. Whether you call it offering or not, it’s legal currency intended for trade,” he added.

GoldBod will curb galamsey and regulate Trade – Tanko Computer

0

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC), Dr Rashid Tanko Computer, has expressed confidence that the country’s new gold trading regulatory system, led by the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), will significantly curb illegal Gold trade activities and ensure Ghana reaps full benefits from its mineral resources.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, April 15, Dr Tanko Computer asserted that the unregulated nature of the gold trade under the now defunct Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) created loopholes that enabled illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, to thrive.

“Gold business under PMMC was so erratic. The galamsey challenge that we are having now is because of the erratic nature of the gold trade in Ghana. Because anybody who gets hold of gold, whether under proper concession or no concession, can trade the business.

“Because it was not properly regulated in Ghana, they could get away with it. So fighting it was like trying to pass a needle through the eyes of a camel.”

The GIFEC boss welcomed the establishment of the GoldBod, which he said brings a more structured and enforceable framework to Ghana’s gold trading ecosystem.

He affirmed that under the new system, only licensed individuals and entities registered with the GoldBod would be allowed to trade gold, eliminating the previous gaps that permitted unauthorized dealers to operate freely.

“Now PMMC is no more existing, it is gone. The GoldBod has taken over. So all those who were licensed under the PMMC, it is nullified. You will have to register with the GoldBod. This is a path to stop galamsey. We will get to know those who are into buying gold from illegal miners. This initiative is to regulate the gold business so Ghanaians will enjoy the fruit of their labour.”

The establishment of the GoldBod and the annulment of all previous PMMC-issued licences is backed by the Ghana Gold Board Act (Act 1140), which was passed by Parliament on March 29 and assented to by the President on April 2, 2025.

The law grants the GoldBod full authority to regulate, monitor, and licence gold trade activities, particularly within the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector.

By targeting the demand side of illegal mining, the new directive aims to cut off the market for unethically sourced gold, making it easier for authorities to track and sanction offenders.

Dr Tanko Computer clarified that this approach would offer a more effective pathway to protect Ghana’s environment, including water bodies and forest reserves, which have suffered severe degradation due to galamsey operations.

Gold Fields to close Damang mine in Ghana

0

Gold Fields is set to cease operations at its Damang gold mine in Ghana following the government’s decision not to renew the mining lease.

The mining company had sought a 30-year extension to the lease through its subsidiary Abosso Goldfields but was notified of the rejection by the Minerals Commission of Ghana.

Abosso Goldfields, the Ghanaian registered company that operates the Damang mine, is 71.1% owned by Gold Fields Ghana, with IAMGold holding 18.9% and the Ghanaian Government owning the remaining 10%.

The Damang site includes five prospecting licences and two mining leases, covering a total area of 8,111ha.

Gold Fields, which also owns the Tarkwa mine in Ghana, has been in discussions with authorities, asserting that its lease extension application met all statutory requirements.

Despite these efforts, the lease, set to expire on 18 April 2025, was not extended.

In a press statement, Gold Fields said: “The Government has instructed Gold Fields to cease operations and vacate the lease area by the 18th April on expiry of the lease. Gold Fields is therefore preparing to safely and responsibly cease operations and ensure the safety and security of our people and high-risk operations.

“The company continues to seek ongoing engagement with the Government to secure the best outcome for all stakeholders. These developments at Damang do not affect operations at Tarkwa, which remain ongoing.”

Gold Fields had already stopped mining activities in 2023, focusing on processing stockpiles as part of its end-of-life plan for Damang, reported Reuters.

The company is shifting its focus to larger projects such as the Salares Norte mine in Chile and the Windfall project in Canada.

In a separate development, Ghana has directed all foreign entities involved in its gold trading sector to exit the market by 20 April 2025, reported Reuters, citing a statement issued by a newly formed government agency.

The move comes as the country aims to restructure the way it purchases gold from small-scale miners to increase national revenue and curb smuggling activities.

Previously, both local and foreign companies holding export licences were authorised to buy and export gold sourced from artisanal or small-scale mining operations. This system, however, is now due to be replaced by a centralised model.

Under the new framework, only the recently established Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) will have the authority to purchase, sell, assay and export artisanal gold.

As a result, all previously issued licences for such activities have been rendered invalid.

Foreigners, however, will have the option to apply “to buy or take-off gold directly from the GoldBod”, reported the news agency, citing a statement.

Last year, Gold Fields acquired Canada-based mineral exploration company Osisko Mining for $1.39bn (R29.61bn).

President Mahama presents agro-chemicals, tractors to key institutions

President John Dramani Mahama at the weekend presented agro-chemical and machines for onward implementation of the Feed Ghana Programme, a government flagship intervention to boost national food productivity.

The President presented quantities of maize seeds, fertilizers, Kia truck and tractors to the Ghana Prisons Service and the National Service Authority to spearhead the implementation of the programme.

President Mahama made the presentation when he launched the implementation of the Feed Ghana Programme in Techiman in the Bono East Region on Saturday.

President Mahama addressing the public during the ‘Feed Ghana Programme’ launch

He called for unity and shared commitment in transforming the nation’s agriculture, as a driver of national growth and prosperity, saying the Feed Ghana Programme presented a proactive initiative, rather than just a policy.

The President admitted challenges in the agriculture sector but added he was highly optimistic that the implementation of the programme would achieve desirable successes.

He called on farmers, agribusinesses, financial institutions, development partners and all and sundry to support the implementation of the programme for the nation to derive the optimum benefits.

The programme aims to implement strategic measures to increase food production, promote the adoption of modern farming techniques, improve infrastructure, and establish agro-industrial zones across Ghana.

Its key interventions include smart agriculture involving establishment of farmers’ service centres nationwide.

The centres will provide essential services such as mechanization, quality inputs, financial support, market access, primary processing and training for farmers.

Additionally, the programme will create farm banks or land banks in designated irrigable zones to support young agri-entrepreneurs and contribute to the enhancement of national food production.

It will also focus on grains and legumes seeking to increase the production of maize, rice, soya beans, and sorghum for consumption, agro-processing, and export.

“Yeredua”, the vegetable component of the programme implementation is expected to reduce the imports of vegetables from neighbouring countries by promoting the cultivation of vegetables locally.

Under the programme investments would be made in controlled environmental farming, such as greenhouse technologies, urban and peri-urban agriculture, and promoting schools to grow their own vegetables through backyard gardening.

It will further promote institutional farming to empower households and communities to cultivate vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and garden eggs to enhance self-sufficiency while support would be extended to institutions such as Senior High Schools to access lands to engage in crop production and livestock farming.

The implementation of the touted “Nkoko Nketenkete” project of the government which seeks to revitalize the poultry industry is also a key component of the Feed Ghana Programme.

I’m three months pregnant and I don’t know the father of my child

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’m a 25-year-old woman who has no one to call a family. I lost my parents when I was 16 years. I broke my virginity at the age of 17. I was having sex with men for survival. I’m currently pregnant but I don’t want to terminate it because this is my fifth time getting pregnant from last year to date.

I’ve terminated the other four and I’m now worried for my health and safety. All the pregnancies I’ve aborted in the past one year belonged to different men and post pill always fails me. I don’t know why and that’s why I’m now scared.

I took my first post-pill when I was 18, and from then on, I relied on it as my main form of protection. It wasn’t until last year that I found out it’s not meant to be taken multiple times a year. Before that, I was using it as often as eight times in a single month. Now I can’t help but wonder, did that overuse make it less effective?

Even though I was taking the pill, I still ended up pregnant five times. That’s why I’ve decided to keep this baby. But what worries me now is figuring out who the father is. I honestly don’t know. I have four serious boyfriends, and I also meet with four other men occasionally for paid sex. I’ve been so confused and overwhelmed, I don’t know how to face this or who to turn to.

I’ve also encountered other men in the last three months, aside my boyfriends and the other guys. I’m really bothered for myself and this child right now. I need to choose a good father to the baby, I don’t know what the future holds. I have already told two of them and one said I should terminate it, but the other one gave me blue ticks.

There are eight more men to tell, hoping one accepts it but what if that’s not who I really want to father my child? What if he’s not responsible enough to cater for us? I’m confused and I don’t know what to do.

I wasn’t raised like this and I pray my parents will not be disappointed seeing me like this. I’m living like this because I have no job and I needed to survive as an orphan. Some of the men I had an encounter with are really wealthy but I don’t even know who to actually pin the baby on.

How would I convince them to accept us? What should I do now? I need help!

‘I have targeted them, and they will see’ – Kodua threatens anyone who will blame him for NPP’s election loss

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has revealed that he has identified certain individuals within the party whom he intends to hold accountable for engaging in blame games following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on Kessben TV, which was shared on social media, Kodua Frimpong stated that he is prepared to address accusations that he contributed to the party’s loss.

He emphasized that he has targeted specific individuals who might blame him for the defeat and warned that he would deal with them accordingly.

“I have targeted some people who will accuse me, saying, ‘General Secretary, you were among the people that caused our defeat,’ and they will see what will happen,” he said.

Kodua Frimpong attributed the party’s loss to strategic missteps, including allowing the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to select their presidential candidate seven months before the NPP did.

“NDC named its candidate in 2023, and you name yours in November. It means you have given them free space,” he explained.

He further noted that the election was not just a single event but a culmination of processes leading up to December 7, 2024.

“We had nine events in 2023. I want this to be on record. Election is a process and not an event. December 7 didn’t just come about; a lot of processes led to December 7,” he added.

The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, on Monday, December 9, 2024, declared John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) the winner of the 2024 election, with a total of 6,328,397 votes.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP received 4,657,304 votes.

Mahama’s party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), achieved historic success by gaining a majority in Parliament.

Iron ore exploration gains momentum in Oti Region

0

Iron ore prospects in Oti Region show promising developments, with preliminary exploration data indicating substantial commercial viability – a development that could represent a notable addition to the country’s resource portfolio.

Global iron ore demand is projected to rise by three percent annually, driven by construction and industrial needs.

The Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC) and its technical partner, Africa Exploration and Minerals Group (AEMG), have been leading work in the Gyamurume community of Kadjebi district since 2020.

Initial findings from the exploration indicate that these iron ore deposits could be among the best in the West African sub-region. During a recent field visit, GIISDEC officials saw evidence of oxidised iron ore with high iron oxide content. According to the preliminary data, some samples contain up to 82 percent iron oxide… which translates to about 57 percent iron. On average, the oxidised ores contain around 67 percent iron oxide, or 47 percent iron.

“These are just early results, but what we are seeing is very promising,” William Okofu Darteh, Chief Executive Officer-GIISDEC, told B&FT.

“The preliminary results they are showing, as far as the eye can see, point to a very good grade. These numbers are based on initial tests and we still have to verify them through laboratory analysis, but they’re encouraging,” he added.

Mr. Darteh further stated that if confirmed, the grades could be higher than some deposits currently being mined in other parts of Africa. This possibility has attracted the attention of potential investors.

“Investors have been coming to us every now and then. They are interested, but we want to make sure the data is complete and accurate before we enter into any serious negotiations. We are not rushing it. We want to get it right,” he explained.

Exploration efforts so far have involved remote sensing and geophysical surveys, which helped AEMG identify 11 drilling targets from an initial 54 areas. Drilling began in mid-2024 and the team has completed eight of the planned 30 drill holes.

The full drilling programme covers 15 drill lines and aims to explore a 2,500-metre area. The drilling is expected to be completed by June 2025 with a comprehensive resource estimate to follow by September.

Franklin Mace, chief geologist at AEMG, explained that the drilling has yielded consistent results.

“We are hitting banded iron formations that are averaging about 30 metres in width. What’s more we have also found serpentinite rocks, which could point to the presence of nickel. That was unexpected but could add more value to the project,” he noted.

The geological mapping has so far identified about 42,000 square metres of fully oxidised ironstones and 36,000 square metres of partially oxidised deposits. These formations extend over an 8-kilometre area, running north to south and dipping steeply to the east. Fault zones and fractures in the rocks appear to make the ore easier to access.

Over 100 rock samples have been tested by Intertek Laboratory and the University of Ghana. Results from those tests confirm that the area contains high iron content.

Prof. Frank Nyame, a lecturer at the University of Ghana and technical advisor to the project, stressed the importance of drilling to confirm the ore’s depth and consistency.

“It occurs on the surface, but we need to confirm that it occurs at depth. That’s why the drilling is important. We want to know how deep it goes and how much is really there,” he remarked.

According to Mr. Darteh, once the drilling is complete and the resource estimate is ready, GIISDEC will use the data to attract investment into the sector. The plan is to develop a full value chain for iron and steel production in Ghana, reducing the country’s dependence on gold and cocoa exports.

“This could be a game-changer. If everything goes as planned, we could have a full resource estimate by the end of September 2025. From there, we will know exactly what we have and we can move to the next stage,” he said.

The country holds approximately 1.7 billion tonnes of iron ore reserves, including the Shieni deposit (1.3 billion tonnes at 33.8 percent Fe) and Opon-Mansi (147 million tonnes at 52.5 percent Fe). A US$600million mining project at Shieni (Northern Region) will begin in late 2025, aiming to reduce annual steel imports worth US$900million. The nation plans to process iron ore domestically by 2027 to produce steel, prioritising value addition and job creation.

The local community is also paying close attention to these developments. Osaberima Osei-Bonsu V, paramount chief of Asato Traditional Area, expressed support for the project.

“This is actual mining, the first of its kind in the region. We have seen the difference between this and illegal small-scale mining. We are engaging with the companies involved and expecting that our people will benefit through jobs and other opportunities,” the traditional leader explained.

Despite some logistical challenges due to the terrain, GIISDEC says it is committed to moving forward. It is working with consultants such as SRK and state institutions like the Ghana Geological Survey Authority to ensure proper oversight. Local drilling contractor BobJosh Drilling Company is providing portable rigs that are helping the team navigate difficult terrain.

“We know there are difficulties, especially with access roads and moving equipment. But we are addressing those issues as they come,” he noted.

If the project reaches its full potential, it could form the backbone of a new industrial sector in Ghana.

Hundreds may have been killed in recent Darfur attacks

Thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes and have sought aid at displacement camps l Thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes and have sought aid at displacement camps l

More than 400 people have been killed in recent attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan’s Darfur region, says the UN citing “credible sources”.

Last week, the RSF launched an intense ground and aerial assault on refugee camps surrounding the city of el-Fasher in an attempt to seize the last state capital in Darfur held by their rival, the Sudanese army.

The two warring sides have been locked in a bloody power struggle since April 2023. This has created the world’s largest humanitarian crisis and forced millions to flee their homes.

The UN said it had verified 148 killings between Thursday and Saturday, but warned the toll was much higher.

Senior international officials will gather in London later to discuss the ongoing civil war in Sudan on the second anniversary of the start of the conflict.

UN spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told the BBC their verification process was still ongoing and their number of those killed did not include Sunday’s violence.

“Credible sources have reported more than 400 killed,” said Ms Shamdasani.

At least nine humanitarian aid workers were among those killed, the UN said.

The camps that surround el-Fasher – Zamzam and Abu Shouk – provide temporary homes to more than 700,000 people, many of whom are facing famine-like conditions.

In a statement released on Saturday, the RSF said it was not responsible for attacks on civilians and that scenes of killing in Zamzam were staged to discredit its forces.

The following day, the group said it had completed a “successful liberation” of the camp from Sudan’s army. The RSF accused the army of using Zamzam as “a military barracks, and innocent civilians as human shields”.

El-Fasher is the last major town in Darfur under army control and has been under siege by the RSF for a year. Sudan’s brutal civil war will enter its third year on Tuesday.

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk called on all parties involved to “renew their resolve to take meaningful steps towards resolving the conflict”.

Ahead of the conference on Tuesday in London, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced a £120m food and aid package for Sudan.

He said Sudan’s stability is “vital for our national security”.

The UK will co-host the talks alongside the African Union and European Union.

Can a romantic relationship financed by a woman survive?

0

couple: picture: pexels

She pays for dinner, covers the rent, and even helps him launch his side hustle—but is love enough to carry a relationship when one wallet is doing all the heavy lifting? More and more women are stepping into the role of financial provider in romantic relationships, challenging outdated norms and, yes, raising a few eyebrows in the process.

According to a 2023 report from the Pew Research Center, women now earn as much as or more than their male partners in nearly one-third of heterosexual couples. The publication adds that this number is only expected to grow as more women climb the career ladder, start businesses, and claim financial independence.

However, while society is slowly catching up, romantic relationships still face a few growing pains when traditional roles are flipped.

Research from Psychology Today notes that money alone doesn’t break relationships—how it’s handled does. Problems often creep in when there’s a lack of communication, unclear expectations, or feelings of inadequacy, especially if one partner (male or female) ties their sense of worth to how much they earn.

Still, many couples make it work—and even thrive. A 2022 study highlighted by The Atlantic found that when couples support each other emotionally, regardless of who brings in the income, they tend to report higher relationship satisfaction. In other words, it’s not about who pays—it’s about how you both feel about it.

So, can a woman-financed relationship survive? Absolutely. But like any relationship, it requires honest conversations, mutual respect, and a shared vision of the future. Because love isn’t about who picks up the tab—it’s about who’s got your back when life hands you the bill.

The chic mermaid dress is a flattering choice for those who want to highlight their curves while maintaining a sophisticated and stylish appearance.

These daring elements provide a balance between sophistication and playfulness. Some styles also include dramatic ruffles or tiered skirts, which add a fun, voluminous flair at the bottom, creating a visually striking effect.

Another popular trend is the off-the-shoulder mermaid dress, which is perfect for highlighting the neckline and shoulders, adding a touch of romance to the overall design. With lace details or embroidered patterns, this style is ideal for a wedding or a special evening event.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, mermaid dresses offer a sense of confidence. Telcos will bear full cost of SIM registration – Communications Minister

0

The Minister for Communications, Samuel Nartey George, has reaffirmed that telecommunications companies will bear the full cost of Ghana’s forthcoming SIM card registration exercise.

Speaking during an interview on Channel One TV on Monday, Mr. George explained that the move is part of efforts to strengthen the country’s telecommunications infrastructure while ensuring accountability among industry players.

He revealed that plans are underway to lay a Legislative Instrument (LI) before Parliament to provide legal backing for the policy.

“They [telcos] will pay for it. I will make them pay for it. There is an LI that we will be laying before Parliament,” he said firmly.

Mr. George drew a clear distinction between the upcoming exercise and the SIM re-registration initiative led by his predecessor, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful. He criticised the previous approach and stressed that the new exercise is not a re-registration but a fresh, comprehensive registration process designed to clean up and centralise the national SIM card database.

“That was one of my criticisms of Ursula Owusu—that the re-registration she did… and that is why I have been clear that I am not doing a re-registration. I am doing a SIM registration,” he clarified.

The Minister further noted that the upcoming exercise will rely exclusively on the Ghana Card, which he described as the “single source of truth” for identity verification.

According to him, this approach will ensure that the data collected is accurate, verifiable, and centralised—addressing the gaps and inconsistencies that plagued past registration exercises.

Providing historical context, Mr. George referenced the last legislation governing SIM registration, enacted in 2010 under then-Minister Haruna Iddrisu.

“The last LI on the record for registration was 2010 by Haruna Iddrisu, and don’t forget that registration Haruna did—there was no Ghana Card at the time, and so there was no single source of truth,” he concluded.

Ato Forson elected board chair of ECOWAS Bank, pledges Ghana’s support for regional development

0

Ghana’s Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has been elected Chairman of the Board of Governors of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), placing Ghana in a leading role within one of West Africa’s main financial institutions.

The announcement was made during the 23rd Annual General Meeting of the Board of Governors of EBID, held in Banjul, The Gambia, on Monday, April 14 2025. Although Dr Forson was not present at the meeting, his message was delivered by Deputy Minister for Finance, Mr Thomas Nyarko Ampem.

Speaking on behalf of Dr Forson, Mr Ampem conveyed the Finance Minister’s appreciation for the confidence shown in Ghana’s leadership and said the country is prepared to contribute meaningfully to the Bank’s work.

“To my fellow Governors, thank you for the trust you have placed in Ghana’s leadership. I will continue to rely on your support in the year ahead,” Dr Forson said in his message.

Outlining his vision for the Bank, Dr Forson identified four priorities for his tenure. These include raising funds for regional projects, recovering capital through stronger asset management, expanding the Bank’s investment base by attracting non-regional members, and increasing EBID’s visibility as a development finance institution in West Africa.

He noted that while the sub-region faces economic challenges, it also has opportunities for growth. With shared effort, he said, the Bank can help build a more integrated and productive West Africa.

Ghana is currently one of the largest beneficiaries of EBID funding, with about $408 million committed to 24 ongoing projects across sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and financial services.

These include financing for Consolidated Bank Ghana, Access Bank Ghana PLC, the Tema LNG Terminal, and the Marriott Hotel project.

Dr Forson also acknowledged the work of the Bank’s President, Dr George Agyekum Donkor, and said progress made under his leadership reflects steady institutional growth.

The outgoing chairman, Mr Seedy Keita of The Gambia, described his time in office as a privilege and said he was confident that Dr Forson would steer the Board effectively. He also reiterated EBID’s role in supporting the development agenda of ECOWAS member states.

Headquartered in Lomé, Togo, the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development is the financial arm of the 15-member regional bloc.

Originally set up in 1975 as the ECOWAS Fund, it became EBID in 1999 and was later restructured in 2007 to support both public and private sector investment across the region.

Five Ghanaian musicians whose songs ‘overshadowed’ their names

0

From L to R: Ayisi, Jah Lead, Pure Akan, and Worlasi From L to R: Ayisi, Jah Lead, Pure Akan, and Worlasi

Musicians are often recognised by their popular hit songs.

However, some artistes have released songs that became so big, they overshadowed their own names.

Music lovers may instantly recognise the catchy tunes but struggle to name the artistes behind them.

This article explores five Ghanaian musicians whose hit songs are more popular than their names.

Ayisi

Ghanaian Hiplife/Reggae musician Emmanuel Kwadwo Oware, popularly known as Ayisi, is one such artiste. Despite having multiple hits, his name isn’t as widely known as his music.

Ayisi has graced the music scene with songs like “Can I Live” and “Grind” (featuring Vision DJ), which became a national hit in 2017. Many Ghanaians enjoy his music without knowing the composer behind it.

He has earned several nominations at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs), including winning Best HipHop/RnB Song of the Year in 2013.
