A teenager, identified as Nana Zinabu and believed to be between 18 and 19 years old, has been found dead in her bedroom under suspicious circumstances at Twifo Praso in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region.

An eyewitness, who lives in the same house as the victim, discovered the body around 4:30 a.m. when she woke up to prepare food for sale.

She recounted that she noticed Nana Zinabu’s door was unusually open and entered the room, only to find her lying naked.

According to the eyewitness, the victim’s mouth appeared to have been sealed with a substance resembling super glue. Apples and three used condoms were also found near the body.

She immediately raised an alarm, drawing the attention of neighbors who quickly reported the incident to the Praso Police Station.

The tragic discovery has sparked fear and panic among residents of Twifo Praso, especially since the deceased was expected to graduate from her sewing apprenticeship later this year.

The body has been deposited at the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District Hospital for further examination and autopsy.

Meanwhile, the District Police Commander, Superintendent Charles Addei Boateng, has assured the public that a full investigation is underway and pledged that all those involved will be brought to justice

VAR official suspended after being caught checking betting site during live match

A Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has been officially suspended after being caught on live television seemingly browsing a betting site.

The incident reportedly occurred just minutes before kick-off in a Bulgarian league match between CSKA Sofia and Lokomotiv Sofia, raising serious concerns about professionalism and integrity.

The suspension followed the circulation of footage on social media, prompting Hawk-Eye Innovations, the organisation responsible for the VAR system in the Bulgarian First League, to report the matter to the Bulgarian Football Union.

After conducting an investigation, Hawk-Eye Innovations released a statement to the Bulgarian Football Union, urging the league to investigate the official involved.

The statement read, “Hawk-Eye Innovations acknowledges with regret an incident involving one of its VAR operators during the Parva Liga match between PFC CSKA-Sofia and PFC Lokomotiv Sofia on Wednesday evening (2nd April 2025).

“Live footage from the VAR operations room documented the individual using a personal smartphone during the match and appearing to engage in inappropriate activities, which would constitute gross misconduct in relation to the responsibilities of their assigned role.”

The statement further revealed that the referee risks losing their job if found guilty.

“If the individual is found to have engaged in such inappropriate activity, we will move to dismiss them in accordance with their contractual terms,” it added.

“He’s a Scammer, I Know Him” — Kufuor’s ‘Son’ Exposed in ‘Surprising Twist

News Hub Creator3h

In a drama-filled exposé that has Ghanaians buzzing, social media was set ablaze after a video went viral of a man parading himself as the son of former President John Agyekum Kufuor — only to be publicly disgraced and labeled a fraud. The shocking revelation has left many stunned, heartbroken, and questioning who to trust in an age where deception can wear a smile and carry a political title.

The video, now circulating widely on platforms like Facebook and TikTok, shows a visibly angry woman pointing fingers and shouting, “He’s a scammer! I know him! He’s not Kufuor’s son!” Her voice trembles not just with rage, but with deep disappointment. It didn’t end there — she went on to claim that the man had previously been sacked by no other than Chairman Wontumi, the outspoken Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Her claims are direct and emotional, and for many Ghanaians who hold President Kufuor in high esteem, the idea of someone falsely claiming relation to such a revered figure is infuriating. “Why would someone stoop so low just to gain influence or money?” one commenter asked.

The full video, which has sparked heated conversations online, can be found in the comments section of several popular Facebook pages. Viewers have expressed shock, some saying they once believed the man’s claims and even supported him.

This exposé is a reminder that in today’s world, not everyone is who they claim to be. And sometimes, even those who claim presidential blood can end up wearing a crown of lies.

Stay tuned — because the truth, as always, will find its way to light.

The surprising origin of sexual vibrators

0

Did you know that vibrators were originally invented as medical tools rather than pleasure devices?
Their history dates back to the late 19th century when British physician Joseph Mortimer Granville developed the first electromechanical vibrator—not for sexual pleasure, but as a labour-saving device for doctors treating a condition known as “female hysteria.”
In the Victorian era, hysteria was a widely diagnosed condition encompassing symptoms like anxiety, irritability, insomnia, and even sexual frustration.

It’s unacceptable that Ghana continues to import sugar and rice – Finance Minister tells AGI

0

The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced that government will soon implement a new policy requiring all public sector agencies to procure specific essential goods exclusively from local producers.

This initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s industrial base, reduce import dependency, and stimulate job creation.

The announcement was made during a strategic meeting with the leadership of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) on April 3 at the Ministry of Finance.

(1) Earlier today, I had a productive meeting… – Cassiel Ato Forson | Facebook

Dr Forson expressed dismay over Ghana’s continued reliance on imports for basic commodities such as sugar and rice, despite the country’s capacity to produce them locally.

“It is unacceptable that Ghana continues to import basic commodities like sugar and rice when we have the capacity to produce them locally. That is why the government is taking decisive steps to support local production,” Dr Forson lamented.

He stressed that the new directive aims to channel public sector procurement towards empowering domestic manufacturers.

“To support our local industries, the government will soon publish a list of items that all public sector agencies must procure locally,” he stated. “Any government procurement from outside Ghana will require special approval from the Office of the President.”

In addition to the local procurement policy, the Finance Minister warned of the severe threat posed by the smuggling of goods into the country.

He disclosed that government has identified key smuggling routes and will soon introduce tough enforcement measures to clamp down on this practice, which continues to undermine local industries.

“Smuggled goods are crippling our local businesses, and we are determined to stop it,” he said.

Dr Forson also called for closer collaboration between the government and private sector actors, inviting industry leaders to a working session to explore how local businesses can effectively engage with the government’s 24-hour economy programme.

He emphasised that robust partnerships will be key to sustaining l ong-term growth and enhancing local production capacity.

AGI President, Dr Humphrey Ayim-Darke, welcomed the move and commended the government’s renewed commitment to industrial development.

He expressed optimism that consistent dialogue and cooperation between government and the private sector would lead to lasting improvements.

The upcoming policy on local procurement, he noted, has the potential to significantly boost the competitiveness of Ghanaian manufacturers while ensuring public spending directly benefits the national economy.

Law enforcement commanders in illegal mining areas to be re-assigned

0

By Muyid Deen Suleman

Kumasi April 4, GNA – Police and other security Commanders stationed at areas affected by illegal mining (galamsey) are to be re-assigned soon.

“I have directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yehuno to promptly reassign all regional, divisional, and district police commanders stationed in areas affected by illegal mining, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, Minister for the Interior, emphasized.

Addressing a gathering of Imams and Zongo Chiefs in Kumasi, as part of his official visit to the Ashanti region, he said the directive aimed to relocate officers, who have been present in mining regions and districts for prolonged periods, without significantly impacting the reduction of illegal mining activities in their areas.

This measure, according to him, was part of a comprehensive government strategy to intensify the crackdown on galamsey and ensure effective law enforcement in the fight against the menace.

As per the new policy, affected commanders will be transferred to regions where mining activities are absent, while their replacements will undergo a probationary period of three months.

Alhaji Muntaka reiterated his dedication to enforcing the directive despite the pressure on the IGP to reconsider the decision.

“I have instructed the IGP to reassign all police commanders stationed in mining areas and appoint new officers in their place.

Any new commander who does not exhibit results within three months will also be reassigned.

We will persist in adjusting until we achieve the desired impact,” he declared.

The directive underscores the government’s renewed commitment to bolstering law enforcement efforts against illegal mining, a practice that continues to jeopardize Ghana’s environment and water resources.

Supreme Court sets April 9 for case against CJ’s removal process

0

The Supreme Court will on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, begin hearing a high-stakes constitutional case challenging the process initiated to potentially remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.

The suit, brought by Old Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah, challenges the procedure being followed by President John Mahama after receiving three separate petitions seeking the Chief Justice’s removal.

At the heart of the legal challenge is the claim that the Chief Justice was not given the opportunity to respond to the allegations before the President began consultations with the Council of State—an action Assafuah argues breaches Article 146(6) of the Constitution.

Represented by former Attorney-General Godfred Dame, the MP contends that bypassing the Chief Justice in the early stages of the process undermines her right to a fair hearing and erodes judicial independence.

The Supreme Court’s ruling will be critical in clarifying the constitutional steps required for the removal of a sitting Chief Justice—and could set a precedent for future cases involving high-profile officeholders.

I will resign from gov’t if… – Kwakye Ofosu [Video]

0

Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed claims by Assin South MP, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, regarding alleged drug trafficking and money laundering involving two aircraft.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Ofosu accused the Ranking Member of the Interior and Defence Committee of creating unnecessary public disaffection, stating that Fordjour has no evidence to support his claims.

“There is nothing in there. If he had evidence, he wouldn’t have waited for someone to call him; he would have made the matter public, even holding a press conference,” Mr. Ofosu said. “I am daring him. If Ntim Fordjour can present evidence of a cocaine haul, I will resign from government that very day. He has nothing,” he vowed.

Rev. Fordjour recently ignited public debate by alleging that two flights—AirMed flight NH23AM and Cavok Air private jet Antonov AN 12 B—landed in Ghana between March 20 and March 25, 2025, carrying suspected cocaine and an undisclosed amount of cash. The NPP has called for investigations into the matter.

Despite President Mahama ordering a probe, Mr. Ofosu asserted that Fordjour’s allegations are baseless and lack merit.

230 cartons of seized opioids destroyed

0

The 230 cartons of the highly dangerous opioids, which were recently intercepted at the Tema Port in an illicit importation into Ghana and other West African nations have been destroyed.

The Ministry of Health and the Foods and Drugs Authority (FDA) on Friday set fire to the drugs following a court order.

The consignment of undeclared opioid pharmaceuticals, worth GH₵20 million which were purportedly in transit to Niger, were seized in a joint operation by regulatory and intelligence agencies at Tema Port on March 14, 2025.

The shipment was seized following a coordinated inspection involving the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), National Security, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

The 230 cartons of opioids which were destroyed on Friday included 128 cartons of Tafrodol, 92 cartons of Timaking Tapentadol and 10 cartons of Rahol Tapentadol

Briefing journalists, the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh said that the safe disposal of the items followed a court order secured for the destruction of the drugs.

Background

On  March 14, 2025 a team of NACOC, FDA, and Customs impounded a consignment of opioids under the guise of transiting from Ghana to Niger.

After impounding it, the state swiftly moved to court to seek an order for the destruction of the opioids.

The court granted the application for the destruction with clear orders, including the venue for destruction. Including people who must witness the destruction, including  registerer of the High Court, FDA, NACOC as well as the Ministry of Science and Environment.

Mr Mintah Akandoh said after the safe disposal of these consignments, government was  going further to interrogate and investigate the client agent and the importer.

“Our information indicates that the importer is not a Ghanaian. The goods were being transported to Niger. And so, we are in touch with the Niger government to know whether or not they okayed such a consignment into their country. But as I stated earlier on, even if the Niger government has okayed such a consignment, our bodies, our ports, our airports will never be used as safe haven.” He said.

He said the Ministry has waged a war against the influx of opioids in Ghana and would continue to monitor whatever is going on at the  ports and harbors.

Investigation

He reiterated the fact that only Kotoka International Airport and the Tema Port had been designated for the import and export of drugs hence government has instructed the security agencies, including the Customs, to impound whatever drugs they get at any of the land bodies.

On investigations, he said officials of the Customs have been instructed to hand over the culprits to the Attorney General’s Department once they finish the investigation for prosecution

Collaboration

The Chief Executive Officer of the FDA, Dr. Delese Mimi Darko said her outfit would continue to collaborate with the Customs Division and other regulatory outfits at the various ports to ensure that such illegal drugs were not sneaked through.

“We have increased our border presence. At the airport, we’re now working 24 hours. At the port, we already work 24 hours. So we’re going to start working 24 hours at the airport, so that our consignment cards are not evaded,” she said

Black Community urged to support African businesses

0

By Morkporkpor Anku

Accra, April 4, GNA – Ms. Elsie Appau-Klu, the Chief Executive Officer of Ezel Fashion, has encouraged the Black Community in America to support African businesses by buying products made in Africa.

She said, “we cannot make any impact or contribution on the rest of the world, if we do not promote investments in industry.”

Ms. Appau-Klu was speaking during a panel discussion at the Black History Festival 2025 in Atlanta Georgia on the theme: “Bridging Continents, Celebrating Legacies, and Promoting Trade.”

The event held at Georgia International Convention Center (GICC) in College Park City from March 28 to March 29, 2025, celebrated African heritage, fostering economic collaboration to strengthen ties between Africa, the Caribbean and the diaspora.

The festival featured panel discussions, business expos, cultural showcases and networking sessions discussion and collaboration.

It also features the prestigious Black History Makers Awards Gala on the evening of March 29, recognising distinguished leaders in business, culture and public service.

“The world of business has become very complicated and competitive and until Africans consciously become aware of themselves and their surroundings in promoting what is African and black, we may become economically extinct soon,” Ms. Appau-Klu said.

She said blacks all over the world represent a great economic power and this presents them with great opportunities to contribute to national development.

“Our economies have depended on others for many years on exporting natural resources like gold, textiles and cocoa without any or limited value addition,” Ms. Appau-Klu added.

The CEO said the human capital that black people presented to today’s world was great and could be capitalised for the development and growth of the continent.

“We must learn skills abroad so fast and be ready to apply these skills and techniques for the growth and development of our countries,” she said.

She said it was important to trade among ourselves and build the confidence of young people to believe in the African culture and diversity and “we cannot build our economy by depending heavily on other countries products.”

“We used the opportunity to introduce our clothing brand to the USA Market and I appreciate and endorse the concept Buy Africa, Build Africa (BABA),” she said.

GFD advocates for adjustable voting booths to improve electoral accessibility

0

By Kodjo Adams, Eugenia Otenwaa

Accra, April 4, GNA – The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to install adjustable voting booths at polling stations to ensure accessibility for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

The Federation also called for sign language interpreters in areas with significant numbers of PWDs to enhance communication.

Mr. Moses Fordjour, Monitoring and Evaluation Manager of GFD, made the appeal at a validation workshop on the 2024 Election Observation report in Accra.

The report, funded by the Star Ghana Foundation, deployed observers to 417 polling stations across all 16 regions of Ghana, focusing on facilities and protocols during the 2024 elections.

“We deliberately designed our observation so that observers could spend quality time sitting and watching the process from when polls opened at 7am until midday,” said Mr. Fordjour.

The report revealed that 40 per cent of voting booths were too high for wheelchair users and persons of short stature.

However, it noted that 79 per cent of polling stations were generally accessible to PWDs.

The Bono East and Upper West regions achieved 100 per cent accessibility, while the Western North region performed poorly on accessibility metrics.

Positive practices highlighted included polling stations on flat ground, absence of physical barriers, spacious voting areas, and supportive electoral officials prioritizing assistance for elderly and disabled voters.

Mr. Fordjour noted that 93 per cent of polling stations had priority seating for PWDs, and 82 per cent provided tactile ballot jackets for visually impaired voters.

Challenges identified included sandy grounds hindering wheelchair users, high placement of voting materials, inadequate ramps, and non-adaptive voting instructions for visually impaired individuals.

“Voting instructions and materials were not adaptive to individuals with visual impairments in some locations. Centres with limited spaces, car tyres fixed in pathways, and poor networking grounds added to the difficulties,” the report stated.

The report also observed disputes between party agents over assisting voters with disabilities.

“There were heated arguments as to who should help this person to vote, which was not a good sign. That means that we didn’t really agree on the nature of assistance and who should step forward when situations like this arose,” Mr. Fordjour said.

He emphasized the urgent need for electoral reforms to improve accessibility and inclusivity for PWDs.

Participants commended the EC for granting the Federation’s observers expanded accreditation, including access to constituency collation centres and the National Collation Centre.

UNFPA applauds Konfidants for research on women’s health at work

0

Konfidants, in partnership with Standard Chartered Bank Ghana, launched the Ghana Women-Friendly Workplaces Report, an insightful study highlighting workplace policies affecting women’s reproductive health, well-being, and career progression.

The report utilises data from a survey of over 2,000 women across Ghana from the public and private sectors. The report revealed both encouraging and disturbing insights when it comes to workplace support for women’s reproductive health.

On the positive, 92 percent of respondents who have experienced childbirth reported benefiting
from paid maternity leave, which indicates the availability of some workplace support.

However, while 79 percent of women reported experiencing reproductive health issues at work, ranging from dysmenorrhea (excessively painful menstruation), trying to conceive, pregnancy, postpartum transitions, miscarriage, stillbirth, and surrogacy to adoption, the availability of support is inadequate and uneven. For instance, 80 percent of women reported no workplace support for menstrual health.

Paternity leave made a meaningful difference for women whose partners benefited from it. While only 15% of partners accessed it, 72% of women said it was very beneficial to their recovery.

The research found that overall, private sector organizations outperform public sector organizations in terms of workplace support for women’s productive health.

In his remark, Dr. Wilfred Ochan, UNFPA Country Representative for Ghana, congratulated Konfidants for a groundbreaking research.

“I want to congratulate Konfidants for a policy-relevant and groundbreaking research on women’s reproductive health in the workplace in Ghana. UNFPA is happy to join the conversation and see how we take the interventions forward,” Dr. Wilfred Ochan said. “There are male reproductive health issues that also need to be addressed.”

Speaking on why the firm took the initiative to conduct the study, the Managing Partner of Konfidants, Michael Kottoh, stressed the need for evidence-driven intervention.

“Data and research-driven evidence form the foundation for effective intervention and policy design to enhance an inclusive work environment for all, and at Konfidants, we are happy to take the lead with this report. With this partnership with Standard Chartered Bank, we are open to welcoming other strategic partners to expand the scope and maximize the impact of this initial work to enhance workplace inclusiveness for women”, he said.

The report was launched at a stakeholder forum hosted by Standard Chartered Bank Ghana. The forum brought together employees, employers, policymakers, corporate leaders, security services, academics, civil society organizations, and international development organizations to discuss actionable strategies for fostering more inclusive workplaces for women.

Gifty Fordwuo, the Head of Human Resources at the Standard Chartered Bank Ghana, opened the Forum and expressed her anticipation for future partnerships with Konfidants for advocacy on supporting women at the workplace.

“I believe that this report and our partnership with Konfidants Ghana will be the first of many that will help bring balance in the workplace and also create an environment for empowering women’s careers and supporting women to see accelerated progress in their professional journeys,” she said in her opening address remarks.

She used the platform to highlight how Standard Chartered Bank is leading the way in making the workplace more inclusive for women.

The Stakeholder Forum featured a panel discussion moderated by Vivian Kai Lokko and included panelists Nora Bannerman-Abbott (AGI Representative and CEO of Sleek Garments), Shaida Nubi (Founder, Tell-It-Moms), Taaka Awori (Board Chair African Women Development Fund, CEO, Busara Africa), Dr. Miriam Rahinatu Iddrisu (Policy Advisor, Social Sector, Office of the Vice President), Adadzewa Otoo (ISSER) and Naomi Baffour Gyau of Konfidants. The former Director of the Social Development Policy Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Emerita Prof Takyiwaa Manuh, provided expert remarks to close the Forum.

THE REPORT FACT SHEET

Key Findings
The report identifies significant gaps in workplace policies that hinder women’s career advancement and well-being. Key insights include:

● Prevalence of Reproductive Health Issues at Work: Seventy-nine percent (79%) of women reported experiencing reproductive health issues at work, with pregnancy and excessively painful menstruation being the most common. Other experiences include lesser-discussed issues such as fibroids, miscarriage, stillbirth, preeclampsia, infertility, and surrogacy, emphasizing the need for more diverse support measures.

● Workplace Support is Available but Inadequate and Uneven: Although 92% of respondents who have experienced childbirth reported benefiting from paid maternity leave, support for other reproductive health needs remains limited. Some organizations have begun to recognize issues like miscarriage, stillbirth, and surrogacy by introducing dedicated provisions. However, 80% of respondents indicated no workplace support for menstrual health. The private sector offers nearly twice as much menstrual health support as the public sector, particularly in flexible and remote work schedules (64.6% vs. 35.4%) and hygiene supplies (72.8% vs. 27.2%). Support for pregnancy-related challenges was also insufficient, as 62% of respondents reported such challenges (including high-risk pregnancies and hyperemesis gravidarum), with 40% struggling to obtain the necessary assistance.

● Discrimination & Career Impact: Eighteen percent (18%) of respondents faced discrimination linked to reproductive health issues, including micro-aggressions, denial of flexible work or leave, poor performance evaluations for necessary time off, pressure to return prematurely, exclusion from key opportunities, and transfers to undesirable roles. Nearly half of the respondents made career-altering decisions—such as reducing work hours, taking unpaid leave, or changing jobs—due to these reproductive health challenges.

I won’t be the first to be jailed, persecuted politically, and assassinated by the NDC—Ntim Fordjour

0

According to a report from GhanaWeb, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, has strongly criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for its unwillingness to address his concerns.

He called on them to put an end to what he described as threats and intolerance regarding critical national issues.

He asserted that no amount of persecution, arrest, or imprisonment would silence him or the Minority from exposing corruption and actions that could hinder the nation’s development under the current administration.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Friday, April 4, 2025, the Assin South MP claimed that the government, led by President John Dramani Mahama, was preventing security agencies from making a statement on his request, as it could implicate prominent figures within the NDC.

He insisted that the security forces were being restrained from speaking on the matter because revealing the information would expose certain individuals.

He further stated that the level of intolerance displayed by the government was unprecedented.

Expressing his resolve, he emphasized that he was not afraid of any form of political persecution, harm, or even assassination, insisting that if anything happened to him, his colleagues in the Minority would continue the fight.

“I am not scared of arrest, I am ready for all that. I won’t be the first to be jailed, persecuted politically, harmed, assassinated by the NDC. If you take me out, 87 Minority MPs will carry on,” he added.

Rev Ntim Fordjour clarified that his primary concern was to receive an update on the two aircraft—AirMed Flight N823AM and Cavok Air Antonov An-12B—which he alleged had transported illegal substances and money into the country.

Addressing the controversy surrounding these claims, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip, assured Fordjour that the government would investigate the matter thoroughly and take legal action against anyone found responsible.

He also challenged Fordjour’s assertion that his information came from intelligence sources, arguing that the details he referenced were public records accessible to anyone upon request.

The South Dayi MP further stated that the government would get to the bottom of the matter and warned that anyone spreading false information to tarnish the administration’s reputation would face legal consequences.

He reiterated that the NDC remains committed to accountability and transparency, ensuring that all government activities are properly documented and made available to the public.

Telecel CEO calls for collaboration between academia and industry for nation-building

0

CEO of Telecel Ghana, Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai has advocated for stronger collaboration between higher educational institutions and industry to prioritize the integration of industrial skills into academic curricula, asserting its relevance to nation-building.

Addressing the theme, ‘Inculcating Industrial Skills in Academia: Key to Nation Building,’ as the guest speaker at the 14th Matriculation and 16th Congregation of the Ghana Christian University College (GCUC), Ing. Obo-Nai said the fast-changing global job market demands professionals skilled in tech skills and data science, stressing that the quality of human resources produced by our academic institutions will determine the competitiveness of our workforce.

“From my years of experience in industry, I dare say that the quality of human resources is the most critical. The quality of graduates we produce from our tertiary institutions will determine the quality of our future workforce. Industries and universities will need to develop structured work readiness programmes to serve as the vital bridge between the world of education and the workforce,” she added.

Ing. Obo-Nai pointed out that the rapid pace of change in consumer needs and business sustainability calls for academia to stay ahead of industry trends to better prepare students for the workforce. She shared a few key recommendations to help universities and students better align with industry needs, including revising curricula to include more industry input, partnering with industry for practical projects, and offering continuous opportunities for learning and knowledge exchange.

“Academia must be in touch with and, dare I say, ahead of industry to prepare a workforce that is fit for the future. Aside from the hard skills and knowledge you will acquire as students, one fundamental truth about the importance of education is the potential it gives us to transform knowledge into action,” she noted.

The ceremony, attended by members of the university’s Governing Council, Board of Trustees, university’s presidency, faculty, mentoring universities, and guests, saw the successful matriculation of 356 fresh students and graduation of 186 students from the Faculty of Health Sciences and Faculty of Business Studies and Technology of GCUC.

Newly inducted president of GCUC, Rev. Dr. James Yamoah called for private sector support to improve the university’s infrastructure and realise their vision of training and churning out employable graduates.

“While our University College sees critical thinking as a necessity tool and therefore looking for any help that shall facilitate it so that our products will be able to compete favourably with their counterparts anywhere, we are also very much concerned about how our products will contribute to the efforts by the government and industries in building a robust economy that ensures employability and productivity with less or no graduate unemployment challenges,” Rev. Dr. Yamoah added.

GCUC’s Governing Council Chairman, Prof. Samuel K. Offei also added his voice to the call for external assistance from government and the private sector to improve the quality of holistic education the institution is delivering.

“We respectfully ask that you consider including Christian University College in your budgetary allocations for organisational assistance this year. Our urgent needs include expanding our infrastructure to accommodate more classrooms, administrative and faculty offices, a comprehensive library and skills laboratory, and student hostels to serve a growing student body.”

In her closing remarks, Obo-Nai urged all graduates to uphold integrity in their professional lives and to remember that their academic journey at Ghana Christian University College was both for their personal success and the greater good of nation-building.

“To our graduates, I have no doubt that you are equipped with the academic knowledge to succeed, but remember, no textbook can fully prepare you for the workplace. Learn to be humble, never stop learning, and approach your job with the attitude of continually proving your value.”

Business man McDan pledges to invest in Ghana’s creative industry

0

The Chief Executive Officer of McDan Group of Companies, Daniel McKorley popularly known as McDan has revealed his intention of investing in Ghana’s creative sector.

According to the business mogul known for his investments across other sectors of the economy, including aviation, his decision stems from the wealth of talent in the creative industry.

In an interview with NY DJ on BTM Afrika, Mr. McKorley praised Ghanaian creatives for their exceptional talent and strong work ethic, but noted that they often struggle to take their careers to the next level due to limited financial resources.

Citing Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy as cases in point, he said: “I can tell you that Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy are some of the most talented artists in Africa. None of these Nigerian artists comes close to them, although they are also talented. Their (Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy) music and stage performances are amazing.”

Asked why he would want to invest in the sector, Daniel McKorley highlighted the great financial potential of the creative economy.

“That space brings a lot of money, and I smile where there’s good money, but it’s not my space, so I would want to sit back as the godfather to support (financially, etc.) people to get into that space. You can’t be everywhere. If you’re living in the system, you have to give others a shoulder,” he further noted.

He also called on other businessmen to invest in the creative sector since musicians, and other creatives are great ambassadors of the country.

“I believe in my heart that they need serious support from businessmen. They are our ambassadors, and I feel we need to invest more in them. I’m not really into that space, but I can see some good young upcoming talents as well,” he added.

In 2022, Daniel McKorley awarded Ghanaian multidisciplinary creative George Quaye a $2 million contract.

He made this revelation during the McDan Youth Connect event which was held on August 11, 2022 at the KNUST in Kumasi.

While encouraging the youth to yearn for greatness and learn to grow by taking baby steps, McDan cited George Quaye, as one of the people who had grown tremendously in his field.

“I’m here with Aboagye. Aboagye you saw in ‘Taxi Driver’ just won a contract from me – about two million dollars. You saw him in ‘Taxi Driver’ like he was joking [in ‘Taxi Driver] but Aboagye had a purpose. Today, he is sitting here in suit. Everybody has something special in him,” he noted.

George Quaye, also the Team Lead for ImageBureau, has in the past few years been vibrant in the field of theatre. Together with his partner Naa Ashorkor, they have staged a number of brilliant plays, aiming to help project theatre in Ghana.

PUWU backs energy minister’s plan to reform ECG amid missing containers

The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has thrown its weight behind efforts by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, to reform the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), describing the move as timely and necessary.

In a statement issued on April 2, 2025, PUWU expressed confidence in the Minister’s commitment to improving service delivery in the power sector and welcomed the establishment of a ministerial committee tasked with exploring the best strategy for transforming ECG.

“This is why we welcomed the ministerial committee established by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition to explore the best approach for transforming ECG,” the union stated.

Signed by General Secretary Timothy Nyame, the statement revealed that PUWU has been closely monitoring developments at ECG since Dr. Jinapor’s appointment and had proactively submitted a joint position paper with the TUC to the Ministry.

The paper, according to the union, addressed major challenges facing ECG and proposed solutions that did not involve privatizing the utility company.

“Among the key concerns raised with the committee were procurement issues and excessive government interference in the company. Therefore, PUWU was not surprised when the Ministerial Investigative Committee uncovered significant procurement and clearing violations,” the statement read.

PUWU pledged its full support for the Committee’s ongoing efforts to locate the missing containers and ensure accountability for all those implicated.

The union’s endorsement of the Energy Ministry’s reform initiative signals a strong alliance between government and labor, both aiming to restore efficiency and credibility in Ghana’s power distribution sector.

Nana Badu Bonsu Basic School: 1993 Year Group gives back, but more support is needed

0

Nana Badu Bonsu Basic School, established in 1950 and located in New Takoradi near the Poasi Methodist Church in the Western region, has long been a hub of academic excellence.

Over the years, it has nurtured countless students who have gone on to achieve remarkable success in Ghana and beyond. Recently, the 1993 year group returned to their alma mater to give back and explore ways to further support the school.

Thirty-two years after graduating, the old students arrived not just to reconnect but to make a tangible impact. In line with tradition, they did not visit empty-handed. Their donation included a set of jerseys, three footballs, a pump, and three ceiling fans—items meant to enhance both the school’s sports activities and classroom conditions.

Speaking on behalf of the group, their spokesperson highlighted the significance of the visit. “We are here to bond with the school, reminisce, and network. We also want to see how we can contribute to the well-being of our younger ones. Having left here 32 years ago, we see a remarkable transformation, but there is still a lot that needs to be done. We are calling on all past students—our mates, seniors, and juniors—to come back and support the school.”

The headmistress, Mercy Appiah, expressed profound gratitude for the support but emphasised the school’s ongoing challenges. “We are very grateful for this generous donation. The footballs and jerseys will encourage our students, many of whom are talented in sports. However, we need more. We need computers, improved facilities, and additional support from the government, corporate bodies, philanthropists, and religious leaders. These little ones deserve the best foundation possible.”

Despite the school’s progress over the years, the call for assistance remains urgent. The 1993 year group has pledged to further discuss how they can provide sustained support. Meanwhile, the headmistress continues to appeal to stakeholders, urging them to invest in the future of the students.

For those willing to contribute to the school’s development, the time to act is now. Every effort counts in shaping the next generation of leaders from Nana Badu Bonsu Basic School.

No more prosecution, we will deport you – Minister of Interior warns foreigners over galamsey

Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka is the Minister of Interior Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka is the Minister of Interior

The Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has announced the government’s decision to deport foreigners involved in illegal mining from the country as part of strict punitive measures to be enforced against them.

According to him, the government will prioritise deportation measures against such culprits rather than prosecuting them in court especially in criminal cases of galamsey and fraud.

Addressing a gathering of police officers in the Ashanti Region on April 4, 2025, Muntaka expressed concerns about the involvement of foreigners in unscrupulous and fraudulent activities upon their arrival in the country, with illegal mining being the most prominent issue.

“Many of them are trespassing in our forests, cutting trees unlawfully. Others are involved in galamsey activities, as well as various other illicit activities. We have decided on a new policy addressing two main issues: if you are in our forest, whether engaging in galamsey or unlawfully cutting trees, or involved in fraudulent activities, whether through computers or other means, our approach will be the same. When we arrest any foreigner for these two crimes, we are not interested in prosecuting them. Our first option is to deport them back to their home country,” he stated.

The minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Asawase, emphasised the government’s commitment to ‘weeding out’ corrupt foreign individuals who are wreaking havoc on the country’s resources and lands.

Muntaka further urged the police to collaborate with the Attorney General, stating that the latter has been briefed on the latest developments.

“And this is something that we are very serious about. And you are the first point of call when people are arrested, and they are handed over to you. Please, if it involves these two things, the prosecutors within the police have officially written to the Attorney General.

“We are not interested in prosecuting people who are destroying our environment and who are defrauding people across the globe. What we want is that we want to take them back to their country and then we put them on the stop list, never to come back to the country,” he stated.

Here are some key sectors at risk after 10% tariff imposition by Trump

0

Yam exports to be affected by 10% tariffs Yam exports to be affected by 10% tariffs

The imposition of trade tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to negatively affect Ghana’s export of various commodities across multiple sectors of the economy.

President Trump recently announced a 10% tariff on imports from Ghana, alongside sweeping new tariffs targeting nearly all U.S. trading partners.

China, for instance, has been hit with a 34% import tax, while goods from the European market face a 20% levy, measures that analysts warn could undermine key pillars of the global trade system and trigger broader trade conflicts.

The move is expected to impact global trade significantly, increasing the cost of both exports and imports.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com on April 4, 2025, the following Ghanaian industries may be severely affected:

Apparel Industry: Over 5,000 young workers depend on exports to the U.S. The new tariff threatens both jobs and profits in a sector that has long struggled to establish itself in international markets.

Cocoa Exports: Although raw cocoa beans enter the U.S. duty-free, processed cocoa products, such as powder and paste, which make up nearly 30% of cocoa exports, are likely to be affected by the tariff. This could discourage value addition in the sector.

Yams: A staple among Ghanaian exports to the U.S., yams currently benefit from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). However, a 10% tariff could erode this advantage, making Ghanaian yams less competitive in American markets.

Prophetess curses Ogyaba over missing GH¢1 million

0

Prophet Ogyaba (L) and prophetess Eugenia (R)

A young prophetess, formerly serving at Prophet Ogyaba’s church, has unleashed a series of curses on him for falsely accusing her of stealing GH¢1 million.

In a video shared by Gossips24 Avenue on YouTube on April 4, 2025, the young prophetess, Eugenia, was seen standing in a stream with a bottle of Schnapps and eggs, invoking curses on the pastor.

Explaining how she was accused of stealing the money, Eugenia stated that she had been entrusted with keeping the funds, but someone else took the money.

This development, she said, has escalated to the point of leaving her homeless.

“I, Eugenia, while under Ogyaba, was given money to keep. Out of nowhere, some wicked person stole the money, and because of that, I’m facing tribulations. I’ve been kicked out and now have nowhere to sleep. As I break these eggs, if I am the one who stole the money, may I die. But if I am not the one, may the person who stole it die, and let their family suffer as a sacrifice,” she declared.

Eugenia also accused Ogyaba of seizing her restaurant and provision shop, claiming he took them to replace the stolen money.

“I opened a restaurant and a provision shop while under him, but he has taken everything from me. He even kicked me out of my home and took everything I had in my room,” she continued.

She further elaborated on the sacrifices she had made for Ogyaba and how they had together established a church in Takoradi.

“I’ve defended you on many occasions, even when you were in the wrong. Because of you, I’ve inherited many enemies. When you brought me from Takoradi, I didn’t have to sleep on the streets. You were the one who asked me to start a church with you, and after you saw my work, you brought me here to help you with your church. Look at how much you’ve benefited from my hard work. But now, you’re tarnishing my reputation on social media,” she added.

The Supreme Court will, on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, hear a case challenging the procedure by President John Dramani Mahama to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.

The Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Samson Asaki Awingobit, has described the United States’ 10% tariff on imports from Ghana as a major setback for the country’s trading community.

He warned that the measure would adversely affect exporters and hinder business growth.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Awingobit expressed hope that the government would step in to address the issue.

“I must say it is a big blow to the Ghanaian business community, especially the exporters,” he said.

“We believe that the Government of Ghana will definitely have to tell us something about what they are going to do to salvage the situation at this point in time,” he added.

On April 2, 2025, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced tariffs targeting several countries, including a 34% tariff on Chinese imports, a 20% tariff on goods from the European Union, and a 10% tariff on exports from Ghana.

Apex Court to Address Controversial Chief Justice Removal Lawsuits: A Legal Showdown Looms

0

In a significant development in Ghana’s judiciary, the Supreme Court is set to hear lawsuits filed by Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Assafuah, and concerned citizen Emmanuel Osei-Owusu, challenging the legality surrounding the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. The hearings are scheduled for next Wednesday, and officials and legal experts are closely monitoring the unfolding situation.

This legal action stems from escalating tensions surrounding Chief Justice Torkornoo, who has come under scrutiny regarding several high-profile rulings and her stewardship of the country’s judicial system. Assafuah and Osei-Owusu allege that the processes followed to initiate her potential removal were flawed and did not adhere to constitutional guidelines.

In their joint petition to the Supreme Court, they argue that the removal process lacks transparency and raises concerns about the integrity of the judiciary. Their lawyers contend that the grounds for removal cited in parliamentary discussions have not met the necessary legal thresholds, calling into question the motivations behind such an unprecedented move against the sitting Chief Justice.

Vincent Assafuah emphasized the importance of maintaining the independence of the Judiciary in a democratic society. “Our commitment to the rule of law is paramount. The integrity of our judicial system must be upheld, and any attempt to unjustly remove the Chief Justice threatens that foundation,” he stated in a recent interview. Emmanuel Osei-Owusu echoed this sentiment, urging citizens to consider the implications of undermining judicial authority.

Legal analysts speculate on the potential ramifications of this case. If the court rules in favor of Assafuah and Osei-Owusu, it could set a critical precedent regarding the removal of high-ranking judicial officials, thereby reinforcing the principles of judicial independence and accountability. Conversely, a ruling against them might embolden political actors seeking to influence judicial processes.

As the hearings approach, public interest is surging. Advocacy groups are rallying for judicial reforms and voicing concerns over the political motivations that may underlie attempts to unseat the Chief Justice. The upcoming proceedings promise to shine a light on the complex interplay of law, politics, and governance in Ghana.

The legal community awaits the Apex Court’s decision, which could reshape the landscape of Ghana’s judiciary and redefine the boundaries of political influence on judicial appointments. As the case unfolds, the nation watches with bated breath, aware that the future of judicial independence hangs in the balance.

A ROCHA lauds Police reshuffle, urges tougher action on galamsey

0

Environmental advocacy group AROCHA Ghana has commended the government for its decisive action in transferring all regional, divisional, and district police commanders serving in mining communities.

The reshuffle targets officers who have served extended periods in these areas without making significant progress in addressing illegal mining. The move is seen as a timely step toward strengthening the fight against the menace.

Speaking on Newsfeed on Channel One TV on Friday, April 4, Deputy National Director of Operations at AROCHA Ghana, Daryl Bosu, said the decision will promote accountability among police commanders and other key stakeholders.

“It is very good to hear the government taking these issues very seriously as one of the key measures to deal with galamsey. For a long time, we have tended to put pressure on MMDAs and let the police command get away with it.

“I am really happy to hear that we are now going to demand accountability from the various divisional commanders in the galamsey-prone areas. It is about time we get everybody in the chain of leadership to be responsible for what is happening.”

Despite welcoming the move, Bosu expressed concerns about the overall approach to fighting illegal mining, describing it as inadequate given the scale of the problem.

According to him, a more forceful and uncompromising approach is needed to deal effectively with the crisis.

“They have been on the street with us, when we were calling for a state of emergency and the repealing, all of these were commitments and promises they made. So we are very happy with the way and manner they handled the fight so far.

“But again, in the fight, it has not been as we expected. We expected them to be more brutal, ruthless, and very persistent to get them out of the field.”

Speaking in an interview with Joy News on Thursday, April 3 2025, she indicated that programs addressing infant and child mortality, maternal health, malaria, HIV, essential medicines, and vaccines would be spared.

Her remarks come in response to a series of new tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump, including a 34% levy on Chinese imports and a 20% tax on goods from the European Union. These measures have heightened global trade tensions and sparked mixed reactions from world leaders.

“Many of the programmes have been reviewed and changed, but Ghana has done better than many places. I’m very pleased that the life-saving programmes will continue,” she said.

She expressed confidence that Ghana’s key exports, such as gold and gas, would remain vital to global trade and would not be significantly affected by U.S. policy shifts.

“We have the historical and cultural [ties]. Also, more than $3 billion in bilateral trade investment is one of the key pillars. There are also goods and services—gold coming from here, gas coming from here—and we have automobiles and pharmaceuticals coming from the United States.

“So, it is something that builds prosperity in all the countries. It is all to say that no matter the changes in language and no matter the change in focus, Ghana remains an important part of the United States, and we will continue to be so,” she emphasized.

Ms. Palmer noted that the United States remains committed to Ghana’s economic recovery, citing upcoming initiatives such as a major U.S. trade mission and a planned U.S.- Africa Business Summit. “The United States is behind Ghana’s economic recovery through things like the World Bank and IMF, but also American company interest in coming here,” The ambassador noted.

The US Ambassador to Ghana’s assurance reinforced the enduring strength of the two countries even as global trade policies evolve.

‘How Can a Reverend Minister of God Opt for Low Road Politics?’ Omane Boamah Responds to Fordjour

0

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Ghana’s Minister for Defense, has criticized Rev. Ntim Fordjour for spreading what he described as false claims about two aircrafts that recently passed through Ghana as reported by Modern Ghana.

The Minister, in a post on his official Facebook page on Friday, April 4, called for Fordjour, the Assin South Member of Parliament, to retract his statements and “repent” for promoting unfounded allegations.

Omane Boamah accused Fordjour of using his position to launch politically motivated attacks driven by bias and personal agendas.

He pointed out that Fordjour’s comments were rooted in a desire for recognition within his party, rather than any factual basis.

“Rev. Ntim Fordjour must desist from reckless allegations founded on untruths, motivated by hatred for President Mahama’s administration,” Boamah wrote, emphasizing the dangerous precedent such actions set.

The Minister also referenced video evidence that discredited Fordjour’s claims, urging the MP to verify facts before making public statements.

“How can a Reverend minister of God opt for the low road politics of sensationalism and smear campaign?” he questioned.

This statement from the Defense Minister comes amid growing concerns over the role of public figures in fueling political tension with misleading or exaggerated claims.

Dr. Omane Boamah’s comments shows the importance of truth and integrity in political discourse, particularly from individuals in positions of authority.

She described the practice as draining and unintelligent, urging critics to engage in more meaningful discourse rather than resorting to insults.

“Name-calling like olosho, prostitute & the like is just so tiring to hear,” she wrote.

The actress went on to criticize the lack of critical thinking among online trolls, implying that many choose to be ignorant rather than engage in constructive discussions.

“Can’t you come up with more intelligent responses?” she questioned.

Henshaw sarcastically added: “Oh well, sense was in abundance, but that’s when you decided to walk away so that you would be bereft of brains. Dullards.”

BSI World Autism Awareness Day float

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Bright Step International School (BSI), Grace Nkrumah, has called on the government and citizens to commit to promoting inclusivity and support for children with autism.

Speaking during the World Autism Awareness Day sensitisation programme, Ms. Nkrumah said autism, which is a neurological disorder that affects communication, language processing, and behaviour, needs attention in the country.

“This is why we are embarking on a float across East Legon and the surrounding areas, distributing leaflets and sharing information about autism. We will also highlight the red flags that indicate a child may need support, such as communication challenges, social difficulties, repetitive behaviours, and sensory issues,” she said.

Ms. Nkrumah disclosed that in Ghana, there is still a lot of stigma associated with autism, saying, “Many parents hide their children’s condition and do not seek the necessary support. Today, we want to emphasise that it’s okay to be different, and we must embrace and support these special children.”

“While there are some government policies in place, more needs to be done to support children with autism. As individuals and organisations, we must champion this cause and create a more inclusive environment for children with autism,” she added.

Ms. Nkrumah further stated that this includes making physical spaces more accessible, such as providing adequate space for movement, quiet areas for regulation, and adapting teaching methods to meet individual needs.

Head of the Language Team at Bright Steps International, Firdaus Koney, urged teachers to be more caring and innovative when dealing with children with autism.

“Teaching children with autism requires creativity and flexibility. You cannot simply sit them down and expect them to learn traditionally. Instead, you must find innovative ways to engage them and make learning fun. This may involve using visual aids, music, or hands-on activities to help them understand complex concepts,” she urged.

Occupational Therapist, Sonia Hammond, called for early interventions in managing autism. She highlighted some red flags that may indicate autism, such as delayed speech, social difficulties, and repetitive behaviours. “If you notice these signs in your child, it is essential to seek professional help immediately. Early intervention can make a significant difference in the child’s ability to manage their symptoms and adapt to society,” she added.

In a historic moment for Ghana’s mining sector, Mr. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, officially inaugurated the Association of China(Ghana) Mining LBG in a grand ceremony attended by key dignitaries. Among them were the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Defa, and renowned Ghanaian businessman Mr. Ibrahim Mahama.

The formation of the Association of China(Ghana) Mining LBG marks a significant step in fostering closer collaboration between Ghana and China in mining industry. This initiative is expected to promote sustainable, responsible mining practices, and economic growth, while strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.

Speaking at the event, Minister Armah Kofi Buah emphasized the importance of partnerships in enhancing Ghana’s mining industry. He highlighted the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for foreign investment, particularly in the natural resources sector.

Chinese Ambassador Tong Defa also reaffirmed China’s support for Ghana’s development agenda, stating that the new association would enhance cooperation, ensure responsible mining operations, and contribute to Ghana’s economic progress.

Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, a key figure in Ghana’s mining business sector, commended the initiative, noting that increased foreign investment and collaboration would lead to job creation and improved technological advancements in mining operations.

Meanwhile, this initiative has drawn mixed reactions from Ghanaians, following the government’s inability to fight illegal mining. Many believe this cooperation would birth more opportunities for illegal Chinese miners into our forests. Many have called on the Lands and Natural Resources Minister to put on hold any initiative that seeks to promote all forms of mining in Ghana.

The inauguration of the Association of China (Ghana) Mining LBG is expected to facilitate knowledge sharing, strengthening regulatory compliance, and encourage sustainable practices within the industry.

By Muyid Deen Suleman

Kumasi April 4, GNA – The Ministry of the Interior has within the last three months arrested and deported about 107 foreign nationals for their involvement in illegal mining (galamsey) activities.

Out of the number, 92 were Chinese nationals

Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, Minister for the Interior, who made this known, said 13 additional Chinese nationals were slated for expulsion in the coming weeks over the same issues.

Addressing stakeholders in the Zongo communities as part of his visit to the Ashanti region, he pointed out that, the deportations were crucial component of the government’s intensified efforts to combat illegal mining across the country.

The minister emphasized the severe implications of illegal mining (galamsey) on Ghana’s environment and economy, pledging to take decisive action against foreign nationals involved in such illicit practices.

“Galamsey stands as one of Ghana’s most pressing challenges.

It has come to our attention that certain foreign nationals, particularly those from China, are actively participating in these unlawful activities.

Our position is unequivocal – once apprehended, they will be deported”, he told the gathering.

He reiterated the government’s unwavering stance against illegal mining, stressing that any foreigner caught engaging in such activities would be promptly expelled.

“In the event that we apprehend any foreign national partaking in this illegality, we will not hesitate to repatriate them to their home country”.

The government’s crackdown on illegal mining continues to escalate, with authorities committing to implementing stringent measures to safeguard the nation’s natural resources.

Several stakeholders who were afforded the opportunity also voiced deep concerns regarding the escalating prevalence of drug trafficking and abuse in Zongo communities, urging the minister to take prompt action in addressing this issue.

PUWU backs Energy Minister’s plan to reform ECG

0

The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has thrown its weight behind efforts by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, to reform the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), describing the move as timely and necessary.

In a statement dated April 2, PUWU expressed confidence in the Minister’s commitment to improving service delivery in the power sector and welcomed the establishment of a ministerial committee tasked with exploring the best strategy for transforming ECG.

“This is why we welcomed the ministerial committee established by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition to explore the best approach for transforming ECG,” the Union stated.

Signed by General Secretary Timothy Nyame, the statement revealed that PUWU has been closely following developments at ECG since Dr. Jinapor’s appointment and had proactively submitted a joint Position Paper with the TUC to the Ministry.

The paper, according to the union, addressed major challenges at ECG and proposed solutions that did not involve privatising the utility company.

“Among the key concerns raised with the committee were procurement issues and excessive government interference in the company. Therefore, PUWU was not surprised when the Ministerial Investigative Committee uncovered significant procurement and clearing violations,” the statement read.

PUWU highlighted ongoing frustrations over the company’s procurement practices. It cited unanswered questions from top management regarding containers stuck at ports, resulting in unnecessary demurrage costs.

“We have repeatedly sought clarification from top management about the procurement process, especially why containers purchased were allowed to remain at the port, incurring demurrage,” the Union said.

The workers’ union further recommended reforms in ECG’s procurement systems, urging management to prioritize direct delivery contracts with suppliers to eliminate delays and financial waste.

“We have suggested that top management enter into procurement agreements with suppliers who can deliver goods directly to the agreed locations,” it stated.

PUWU has pledged full support for the Committee’s ongoing efforts to locate the missing containers and ensure accountability for all those implicated.

The union’s endorsement of the Energy Ministry’s reform initiative signals a strong alliance between government and labor, both aiming to restore efficiency and credibility in Ghana’s power distribution sector.
