Improve quality of service or face sanctions – Minister to Telcommunucation companies

0

Accra, June 1, GNA- Mr Samuel George, the Minister of Communication, Digitalisation Technology and Innovation, has urged the three telecommunications companies in the country to improve quality of service or face sanctions as stipulated in the Ministry’s mandate.

He said the government would ensure that 40 per cent to 50 per cent of the sanction, which was in the form of fines, would be shared with the customers by way of either data or call time on their networks.

The Minister said this in Accra at a meeting with Chief Executives of the three telecommunications companies in the country.

Mr Stephen Blewelt, Chief Executive of MTN Ghana; Mr Skarlator Leo, Chief Executive of AirtelTigo; and Mr Mohamad Ghaddar, Chief Operating Officer of Telecel attended the meeting.

The meeting was at the back of a survey conducted by the National Communications Authority on customer satisfaction from the telcos in the country.

The survey was conducted in the first quarter of the year, covering 48 localities.

The report, among others, revealed that most customers were not happy with the quality of services being rendered to them by the telcos.

He said the government was currently in negotiations with a strategic partner to revamp and take over AirtelTigo.

“We have started those conversations; we are doing a 60-day window for the completion of those negotiations so that by the end of the third quarter, we could see a full rollout of the improved services on AirtelTigo.”

Mr George announced that the cabinet was giving approval for spectrum to be offered to Telecel and MTN as well to improve their quality of services to the public.

“We are hoping by the end of September 2025, we will want to see the start of the utilisation of the spectrum resources that have been given, and by the end of December 2025, we will want to see a remarkable increase in quality of service.”

On the issue of data pricing, the Minister said the government had set up a committee in February to develop a roadmap that would lead to the reduction in data before the end of December 2025.

“However, we will do this so that we do not create a shock in the ecosystem that affects the planning and viability of investment in the industry.

“We are not going to do this as a one-time shock. It’s going to be a staggered approach to achieving what we want to do until we have a first move on value,” he said.

He said the government would be very happy to see some improvement on the three variables – price, value, and quality – of the three telcos.

Mr George announced that in the first week of July, he would brief the country on value for money from the perspectives of the telcos.

“An announcement will be made on increased value across all bundle offerings that the network operators give to ensure that Ghanaians get more value for what they are paying,” he said.

He said the government was committed to resetting the sector by ensuring that the right things were done.

“You will remain profitable for those who are profitable. For those who are loss-making, you will become profitable because when people get a better experience, they will spend more,” he said.

The Chief Executives acknowledged the importance of the meeting in charting the path forward towards improving the sector.

They pledged to work assiduously to address the challenges in the sector and meet the deadlines set by the Ministry to improve quality of service.

JUST IN: Nations FC boycott Basake Holy Stars game over “unfair” officiating

0

Nations FC have reportedly taken the dramatic decision to withdraw from the Ghana Premier League with immediate effect, following what they describe as blatant and unfair officiating in their match against Basake Holy Stars at Nzema on Sunday.

The shocking move comes after a fiercely contested Matchday 33 encounter in which Nations FC, who were trailing 1-0, voiced serious grievances about several controversial refereeing calls that they claim directly influenced the outcome of the game.

According to close sources, Club President Dr. Kwame Kyei, a respected figure in Ghanaian football and former Executive Chairman of Asante Kotoko, is said to be deeply disappointed and disillusioned with the league’s officiating standards.

He reportedly confided in associates after the match that he has no intention of continuing with the club’s participation in the Ghana Premier League if such “injustices” persist.

While official details of the incidents in question remain limited, eyewitness accounts from the match at Nzema suggest multiple contentious decisions, including a disallowed goal and questionable penalty claims that went unacknowledged by the match officials.

Emotions reportedly ran high on the pitch and in the stands, as players and fans of Nations FC reacted angrily to the perceived injustices.

This is not the first time this season that concerns about refereeing standards have been raised in the Ghana Premier League. However, Nations FC’s decision—if confirmed—would mark the first major mid-season withdrawal in recent years, and could have far-reaching implications for the integrity and governance of the competition.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is yet to release an official statement regarding the development, but reports indicate that emergency discussions may be held in the coming hours to clarify the situation and attempt to engage the Nations FC hierarchy.

Nations FC, currently one of the surprise packages of the 2024/25 campaign and in contention for the league title, have been praised for their structured management, investment in infrastructure, and competitive performances.

Nations FC currently lead the Ghana Premier League table with 60 points from 32 games with a game to end the season.

President John Dramani Mahama has promised to upgrade selected nursing and midwifery colleges across Ghana into degree-awarding institution

This initiative is part of a wider strategy to enhance tertiary education and significantly improve healthcare delivery nationwide.

During his “Thank You” tour of the Ahafo Region on Saturday, May 31, 2025, President Mahama reiterated the government’s dedication to bridging educational infrastructure disparities, particularly in deprived areas.

“We remain committed to expanding tertiary education, especially in regions that have historically been deprived,” President Mahama stated.

He further explained that transforming health training institutions into degree-awarding colleges would not only elevate the professional capacity of nurses and midwives but also robustly strengthen the entire healthcare delivery system across the country.

“We will upgrade selected nursing and midwifery colleges across the region into degree-awarding institutions. Additionally, we will continue the distribution of buses to senior high schools and health training institutions to facilitate their academic operations,” he added.

Fuel prices set to drop by up to 9% in June

0

Fuel prices are projected to fall between 5% and 9% in the first pricing window of June, offering relief to consumers amid persistent inflationary pressures.

The forecast, released by the Africa Sustainable Energy Centre (ASEC), attributes the expected drop largely to the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar.

According to ASEC’s latest market assessment, petrol is expected to retail between GHS 12.00 and GHS 12.60 per litre, while diesel could sell for between GHS 12.60 and GHS 13.20 per litre during the upcoming pricing window.

Ghana’s fuel pricing mechanism is adjusted biweekly and reflects changes in global oil prices, exchange rates, and import costs.

While global crude oil prices have dipped—from about $85 per barrel in January to roughly $64 currently—the cedi’s strengthening has had a more immediate impact on local pump prices.

“Because petroleum imports are dollar-denominated, a stronger cedi means lower procurement costs for oil marketing companies, which should translate into reduced prices at the pumps,” ASEC said in a statement.

The anticipated reduction is expected to ease transportation costs and overall inflation, offering short-term respite for households and businesses. However, ASEC cautioned that falling oil prices could put pressure on government revenue.

As a net exporter of crude oil, Ghana relies heavily on international oil prices to support foreign exchange inflows and budgetary funding. With Brent crude now down more than 24% since the start of the year, the government risks earning less from petroleum-related exports.

“Unless these declines are purely exchange rate-driven, lower global prices typically result in reduced state revenue. The government may need to ramp up production volumes to offset shortfalls,” ASEC noted.

Looking ahead, the think tank projects that global crude oil prices could remain in the $62–$65 per barrel range, driven by higher output from OPEC+ producers and softening demand from major economies like the U.S. and China.

ASEC said it will continue monitoring market trends and provide evidence-based insights to guide policy. It also urged the government to balance consumer relief with long-term strategies for energy security and fiscal resilience.

Fuel prices remain a critical economic indicator in Ghana, influencing inflation, cost of living, and industrial activity.

While the expected drop in pump prices may be temporary, it signals a positive turn in economic sentiment as the country navigates its recovery path.

The law is no respecter of persons – Legal expert

A powerful reminder from law professor Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua has stirred renewed conversation about how political figures in Ghana handle legal matters involving their own.

His central message? The law doesn’t bend for political colours. “The law is no respecter of persons. It must apply to everyone, regardless of political party or position,” he said during a weekend panel discussion on Channel One TV.

CSA blacklists 40 loan apps for harassment and data abuse

0

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has issued a strong warning to the public following a rise in cyberbullying, harassment, and blackmail linked to unlicensed mobile loan applications operating in Ghana.

The Authority revealed that from January to May 2025, it received 377 complaints relating to such digital lending platforms—a significant jump from 228 cases reported in all of 2024.

The CSA attributes the increase to the aggressive recovery methods used by these unauthorised loan apps, which frequently flout data protection regulations and consumer rights.

Many of these platforms operate outside Ghana’s legal and regulatory frameworks and are not under the supervision of the Bank of Ghana or relevant financial authorities.

According to the CSA, users are often offered unsolicited loans, and when they are unable to repay on time, the apps resort to harassment.

Victims report receiving threats of defamation, blackmail, and intimidation.

In several instances, private information—including photos, contact lists, and messages—has been extracted from users’ devices and shared with third parties, friends, or family members as a form of coercion.

“These apps operate without legal backing and often disregard consumer protection laws. Engaging with them exposes users to serious risks, including data breaches, harassment, and financial loss,” the CSA warned in an official statement.

The Authority has so far identified 48 of these so-called “rogue loan apps”, many of which are still active in the Ghanaian digital space. Some of the blacklisted platforms include Miniloan, Devtage Loan, Mix Loan, Ozzy Money-Cash, Plus Cash Arrow, Cash Arrow, FundsCredit, Lever Credit, GetLoan, Upper Loan, Kcash, BestLoan, Gcash, DaraLoan, Loanbase, TapLoan, Gh Loans, Sune Loans, Urgent Money, SparkLoan, SkyLoan, Loancloudgh, and Pea Money, among others.

The CSA is advising users to exercise caution and verify the legitimacy of any loan service before engaging with it. Users are also encouraged to read app permissions carefully before installation, especially when granting access to contacts, media, and other personal data.

As part of its public protection measures, the Authority has activated its 24-hour cyber incident response platform, through which victims or concerned users can report suspicious digital activity.

Ghanaians are urged to remain vigilant and avoid interacting with loan apps not regulated by the Bank of Ghana or listed under approved financial service providers. The CSA says it is working with other relevant institutions to remove these apps and hold developers accountable.

For support or to report abuse, users can contact the CSA’s incident reporting lines or visit their official website.

Arrests aren’t theatre, let the law work – Franklin Cudjoe

0

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has expressed deep frustration over what he described as the unnecessary drama that often surrounds the arrests of politically exposed individuals in Ghana.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, May 31, 2025, Cudjoe questioned why routine police invitations or arrests of public figures are frequently turned into national spectacles.

Wontumi’s illness likely psychological — Security Consultant suggests

0

Security consultant Richard Kumadoe has attributed the sudden illness of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—to the psychological toll of facing serious allegations, some of which, he believes, may be true.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, May 31, Kumadoe said Wontumi’s reported collapse during interrogation by the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) was unsurprising, given the weight of the charges against him.

“For the fact that you are Chairman Wontumi and for the fact that you have been arrested, and you are not sleeping in your house, you are likely to fall sick. For the fact that your business is in line with the nature of NPP-NDC politics, you are likely to fall sick,” Kumadoe stated.

He further noted that the nature of the allegations—including fraud, money laundering, and cross-border crimes—can have a significant psychological impact, especially if the accused knows there is some truth to them.

“If the charges that were put out by the Deputy Attorney General that you are being investigated for fraud, money laundering, cross-border crimes, and many of those things…and if you know that many of these charges are true, you will fall sick.

Knowing very well that you can be kept under the walls of the BNI, which are higher and thicker than your house walls, you will fall sick.”

Chairman Wontumi was rushed to a hospital on Tuesday, May 27, after reportedly falling ill during questioning by EOCO in Accra. His legal counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi—a former Member of Parliament for Asante-Akim North—confirmed the incident.

Wontumi had been arrested earlier that day by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, and later picked up by EOCO, which is conducting a separate investigation into alleged financial crimes, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

He was granted bail on Wednesday, May 28, with conditions set at GH₵50 million and two justified sureties. However, despite claims by his lawyers that the bail conditions had been satisfied, Wontumi remained in custody as of Saturday, May 31.

His continued detention has sparked protests from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with Minority MPs staging a sit-in at EOCO’s headquarters on Thursday, May 29. Protesters claim his arrest is politically motivated and part of a broader campaign of intimidation.

But Kumadoe, who earlier described the protests as “unreasonable,” maintains that EOCO acted within the bounds of the law. He insists that Chairman Wontumi’s condition reflects the seriousness of the allegations, not any form of mistreatment.

IGP orders raids on ‘galamsey’ hotspots, 38 suspects arrested

0

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has directed a series of high-impact operations targeting illegal mining activities—commonly known as galamsey—in the Western, Ashanti, and Central Regions.

The nationwide crackdown, which began earlier this week, led to the arrest of 38 suspects from various hotspot towns notorious for destructive mining practices, including operations within residential settlements and near major highways.

One of the major operations occurred at Huniso in the Western Region, where 13 individuals were apprehended. They were subsequently remanded by the Tarkwa Circuit Court and are scheduled to reappear on June 6, 2025.

In the Ashanti Region, a team led by Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, ACP Joseph Nyaaba, raided an illegal mining site situated just 200 metres from Asare Bediako Senior High School in Akrokerri near Obuasi. The operation, carried out under the IGP’s directive, resulted in the arrest of nine suspects using explosives that caused damage to school property.

Another raid was conducted on May 29 at Dunkwa-On-Offin in the Central Region. Divisional Commander Superintendent David Ashong and ASP Emmanuel Bruce led 20 officers to the River Offin bank, where they arrested two illegal miners, Samuel Ankamah and Daniel Agyeman. The two were operating excavators and are now in police custody pending further investigation.

A separate operation was carried out at Wassa Dadieso, a town known for deep mining pits dug dangerously close to homes and roads. Under the command of Chief Superintendent William Jabialu of the Wassa Akropong Police District, a force of 82 personnel stormed the area and arrested several illegal miners.

The police then extended their operation to nearby Wassa Gyapa, another galamsey hotspot. There, over 135 chanfan machines were destroyed and set ablaze, one motorbike was impounded, and six more suspects were arrested despite the difficult and muddy terrain.

All suspects across the various operations are currently in police custody and assisting with ongoing investigations. They are expected to be formally charged in the coming days.

The police have indicated that further operations are planned as part of sustained efforts to combat illegal mining and its environmental impacts.

Armwrestling and Fire Service forge development partnership

0

Charles Osei Asibey, President of Ghana Armwrestling Federation in a pose with the Acting Chief Fire Officer, Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong

The Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), in a bid to promote physical fitness and sports development among security personnel, has met with the leadership of the Ghana National Fire Service in Accra to discuss a partnership in the development and promotion of armwrestling within the service.

The GAF, led by its President, Charles Osei Asibey, made its intentions known during a strategic meeting with the Acting Chief Fire Officer, Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong. The engagement focused on strengthening the presence of armwrestling within the security services, with an emphasis on promoting inclusive participation for both civilians and uniformed personnel.

The two organisations agreed to work together to identify and nurture talented firefighters with potential in armwrestling. The Fire Service will form an Armwrestling Club that will provide expert coaching and sports psychology guidance to help athletes develop their skills and become champions. This initiative is expected to not only improve physical fitness among firefighters but also promote teamwork and community engagement.

“We are excited about this partnership and its potential to promote armwrestling development within the Fire Service,” said Chief Fire Officer Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong. “We believe that armwrestling will help our personnel develop the strength, endurance, and agility needed to perform their duties effectively.”

Madam Daniella further directed that the Human Resource Department and Sports Unit of the Fire Service immediately engage with the Ghana Armwrestling Federation to recruit fire officers to participate in the sport. “We want to ensure that our personnel are fit and ready to combat or prevent fires at all times,” she emphasised.

Recalling the Fire Service’s past achievements in sports, Chief Fire Officer Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong added, “We have produced quality national athletes in the past, and we will revisit the past by ensuring our officers participate in armwrestling. We are confident that our personnel will excel in this sport and bring glory to the Ghana National Fire Service and the nation.”

The Chief Fire Officer concluded, “With this partnership, we will produce world champions soon, and this will change the image and narrative of the Ghana National Fire Service. We will show the world that we are not just firefighters, but also champions in sports.”

President Charles Osei Asibey of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation added, “This partnership is a significant step towards promoting armwrestling in Ghana. We are confident that the Fire Armwrestling Club will produce talented athletes who will make us proud on the national and international stage.”

In recognition of her support for sports development and inclusive engagement, Acting Chief Fire Officer Ntow Sarpong was officially named a Patron of the Federation and presented with commemorative medals.

The visit marks a significant step in deepening collaboration between the Ghana Armwrestling Federation and national security institutions, using the sport as a platform for unity, empowerment, and national cohesion.

Present were Vice President Dr. Kofi Addo-Agyekum, Secretary General Jesse Agyepong, Board Members Edwin Amankwah, Husseini Akuetteh Addy, Godfrey Amarteifio, and media consultant Kenneth Odeng Adade.

‘I had to muster courage to avoid depression during my time at the university’- Ntim-Fordjour

0

Former Deputy Education Minister, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour Former Deputy Education Minister, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour

Former Deputy Education Minister, John Ntim Fordjour, has recounted the financial struggles he endured as a student, revealing that he had to work extra hard just to stay in school.

Speaking in a recent interview with broadcaster Kafui Dey, the Member of Parliament for Assin South recalled how, apart from his first year’s tuition, which he managed to pay in full, he struggled to afford fees in subsequent years.

“From the second and third years onward, I couldn’t pay my fees in full, there were times I had no money at all not even enough to make a deposit”, he recounted.

Faced with the threat of being unable to register for his courses, he often turned to his department heads for help.

“I would go to my Head of Department either Professor Aboah, or Professor Sarpomaa, or Professor Amankwah, they were all department heads at the time. I had to ask them to write undertakings on my behalf, assuring the school that I would pay later in the semester”, he remarked.

Asked how he coped emotionally with such uncertainty and pressure, Reverend Fordjour admitted it was not easy.

“I had to muster a lot of courage to avoid depression, there were very tough times. Even finding what to eat was difficult”, he noted.

Reverend Ntim Fordjour recalled how the embarrassing cycle of writing undertakings each semester took a toll on him, especially during exam periods.

“Whenever exams were approaching, my heart would be throbbing wondering whether I’d be able to pay my fees in time, because without payment, you wouldn’t be allowed to write. God came through somehow”, he stated.

The law maker managed to find support from family, friends, and sometimes his parents. He also took matters into his own hands by engaging in trade.

“I started selling perfumes on campus and even in town, I’d get supplies from different sources and sell them to make ends meet”, he added.

Zoomlion inks waste management deals in Nigeria, DRC and Ethiopia

0

Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL), a leading waste management company under the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), continues to make significant strides in expanding its footprint in Africa.

Recently, the company has signed a Waste Management and Processing Concession Agreement with Lagos, Nigeria, and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, solidifying its commitment to sustainable waste management and environmental conservation.

Lagos, Nigeria

In a major breakthrough, Zoomlion Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of ZGL, signed a Waste Management and Processing Concession Agreement with the Lagos State Government on May 26, 2025.

This Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative aims to transform the Lagos State’s waste management landscape, creating around 5,000 jobs

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the Executive Chairman of JGC, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, formalised the partnership at the State House in Alausa, Ikeja, Nigeria.

This collaboration will see the development of two pivotal facilities: a material recovery plant and a waste recycling plant. These installations will be crucial in integrating Lagos into a modern and sustainable waste management framework.

Lagos State currently generates approximately 13,000 tonnes of waste daily. Key components of the agreement include the construction of Transfer Loading Stations (TLS) at the Olusosun Dumpsite in Ketu and Solous III Dumpsite in Igando.

The TLS at Olusosun will divert 2,500 tonnes of waste daily to a new Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Ikorodu, while the TLS at Solous III will divert 1,500 tonnes daily to a new MRF in Badagry. Additionally, self-tipping tricycles will be deployed to enhance waste collection in hard-to-reach areas across the metropolis. All projects are slated for completion within 18 months.

Governor Sanwo-Olu hailed the agreement as a “turning point” in the state’s waste management journey, emphasising that it would create over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs and enhance the operations of PSP waste operators.

“Today, we have witnessed the official commencement of a mutually beneficial relationship between a forward-looking private company and a committed public sector,” he said.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, described the project as a major milestone, marking the state’s transition to a circular waste economy.

“We can now begin to generate wealth from what we previously discarded,” Wahab indicated.

Kinshasa, DRC

On the same day, May 26, 2025, Zoomlion also inked another MoU with the City of Kinshasa, DRC to collaborate on a project focused on the collection, transportation, recovery, and conversion of municipal and other forms of waste into valuable products.

This partnership is expected to generate approximately 5,000 jobs in Kinshasa’s waste management value chain.

The Provincial Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development for the Province of Kinshasa, Hon. Léon Mulumba Mwana Nshiya, initialled on behalf of the City of Kinshasa.

“This agreement is a symbol of our strong will and unwavering commitment to build a cleaner, greener Kinshasa,” Hon. Léon Mulumba Mwana Nshiya stated.

The Jospong delegation was led by Mr. Daniel Amuyaw Addo, who expressed great enthusiasm about the partnership.

“This signing ceremony reaffirms Jospong’s dedication to providing innovative and integrated waste management solutions to Kinshasa. We are grateful to all stakeholders who contributed to defining the scope of this strategic partnership,” he noted.

He presented a token of appreciation to H.E. Daniel Bumba Lubaki, the Governor of Kinshasa, as a gesture of goodwill.

In his closing remarks, the Governor emphasised the continental importance of the project, stating, “I strongly believe this project will not only improve the environmental well-being of Kinshasa but will stand as a model to project the name of Africa on the global map.”

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Furthermore, the waste management giant signed an MoU with the Addis Ababa City Council on May 29, 2025, to establish an Integrated Waste Management Infrastructure in the Ethiopian capital.

The agreement will enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of existing waste management facilities, ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable environment for Addis Ababa.

Under the MoU, Zoomlion will invest in the development, construction, and operation of Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) for the purpose of recovering, sorting, and recycling materials extracted from various waste streams, set up Compact/Mobile Transfer Loading Stations for efficient transfer and management of waste within designated areas and be granted the exclusive right to manage, operate, and maintain the established projects for a defined period.

Upon completion, the integrated waste management facility will not only create around 5,000 new jobs and improve sanitation standards but also contribute significantly to Ethiopia’s broader environmental conservation goals

Speaking at the signing ceremony, representatives from both parties underscored the importance of the partnership in addressing urban waste challenges.

The Deputy Mayor and General Manager of Addis Ababa City, Hon. Eng. Wendimu Seta, explained that this partnership represented a major milestone toward a cleaner and more sustainable Addis Ababa.

According to him, with Jospong Group’s expertise and dedication, the city can look forward to a more efficient and environmentally friendly waste management system.

The parties indicated that further details on the implementation timeline and specific projects under the MoU will be announced soon.

WiWASH marks Menstrual Hygiene Day at Alogboshie Cluster of Schools, calls for period-friendly Ghana

0

By James Amoh Junior, GNA

Accra, June 1, GNA – The Network of Professional Women in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WiWASH) has commemorated Menstrual Hygiene Day with a sensitization and donation exercise at the Alogboshie Cluster of Schools, urging stakeholders to work towards a more period-friendly Ghana.

WiWASH called for the creation of a Period-Friendly Ghana where girls could manage their periods with dignity, safety, and confidence.

The event was held in collaboration with Ghana Water Ltd. (GWL) and focused on education, advocacy, and the donation of menstrual hygiene materials to support over 200 schoolgirls.

Each year, WiWASH identifies underprivileged schools and empowers young girls through menstrual hygiene education, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to manage their health with dignity.

The initiative also provides essential support by donating sanitary products, books, stationery, soaps, and food items to help create a more conducive learning environment and improve the overall well-being of the students.

Since 2018, the network has reached thousands of girls in underserved areas including Wa, Ashaiman, Kpeve, Bortianor, Weija, and Ngleshie Amanfrom with donations and menstrual health education.

Mrs Faustina Boachie, President of WiWASH, whose speech was read on her behalf by Mrs. Perpetua Asomani, WiWASH Organiser and Chief Manager of Lands and Estates at GWL, highlighted the importance of addressing the shame and silence surrounding menstruation.

She stated that every girl had a right to manage her period safely and confidently, stressing that menstruation was a healthy and natural part of life and not a subject for ridicule or embarrassment.

Mrs Boachie, also the Chief Manager of the Low Income Consumer Support Department of GWL, called on society — particularly boys and men — to be part of the broader conversation on menstrual health.

She added that schools must become safe spaces where girls felt comfortable discussing menstrual hygiene without fear of being teased or sidelined.

The WiWASH President urged teachers and caregivers to serve as the first line of support, offering empathy, education, and encouragement to girls.

According to her, building a Period Friendly Ghana meant ensuring that no girl was left behind because of her period.

She explained that this could only be achieved when schools were equipped with appropriate WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) facilities, provided with the right information, and when myths and misconceptions about menstruation were actively challenged.

“Let’s break the silence and end the shame. Together, we can build a Ghana where every girl feels proud of her body, every boy shows respect, and every child can learn, grow, and dream without barriers,” Mrs Boachie advised.

Mrs. Cynthia Aboni, Okaikwei North Municipal Director of Education, expressed concern about the widespread misinformation and shame that still surrounded menstruation in schools and communities.

She said many girls in Ghana were still denied their right to education because of lack of access to menstrual products or sanitary facilities.

Mrs Aboni applauded WiWASH for its commitment to supporting schools and called on other stakeholders — NGOs, government institutions, and the private sector — to join in the effort to make menstrual hygiene a national priority.

She emphasized that empowering girls to manage their periods properly was not just a health issue, but a matter of educational equity and national development.

According to Mrs. Aboni, the lack of basic infrastructure in schools, such as access to water, changing rooms, and sanitary pad banks, posed major obstacles for menstruating students.

She noted that the situation at Alogboshie Basic School was a perfect example of how underserved schools were being left behind despite being located in the capital city.

She urged WiWASH and partners to sustain and expand their support to more schools across the municipality, adding, “Let us work together to build a Ghana where girls feel proud, not ashamed, during their periods; where no girl has to miss school because of menstruation.”

Mrs. Eunice D. Yidana, Headteacher of Alogboshie One Basic School, noted that although the school had a washroom facility, there was no running water, no changing room, and no library to support health education, making it difficult for girls to manage their periods in school.

She explained that as a result of these challenges, many girls either stayed home during their periods or left school mid-day and never return, creating gaps in their academic performance and confidence.

Mrs. Yidana said while the school tried to do its part through its guidance and counselling units, much more support was needed, calling on government agencies, NGOs and other benevolent organisations to the deprived school.

Mrs. Solace Akomeah, Executive Secretary of WiWASH, who led a panel discussion on demystifying menstruation and ending “Period Poverty”, said the issue of menstrual hygiene was directly linked to the broader goal of empowering young women.

She said period poverty was still prevalent in many parts of the country, and its consequences— such as infections and school absenteeism — could not be ignored.

Mrs Akomeah, also the Accra West Communication Manager of GWL, explained that some girls, and even adult women, use improvised materials during menstruation because they could not afford sanitary pads, exposing them to reproductive health risks.

She emphasized that the annual Menstrual Hygiene Day celebration was not a one-off event, but part of WiWASH’s long-term mission to empower girls.

Mrs Akomeah condemned certain cultural practices that prevented menstruating girls from going to school or crossing rivers.

“These harmful practices must stop. We want to see a Ghana where girls are bold, healthy, and empowered — where menstruation does not define their ability to succeed,” she stated.

Gender battles in marriage not necessary; there should be division of labour

First Lady of Lighthouse Group of Churches, Adelaide Heward-Mills First Lady of Lighthouse Group of Churches, Adelaide Heward-Mills

First Lady of the United Denominations Originating from the Lighthouse Group of Churches, Episcopal Sister Adelaide Heward-Mills has advised married couples to avoid battling each other over roles within the marriage.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb at the 2025 Woman Redefined Conference in Accra on May 31, 2025, Heward-Mills challenged societal gender expectations, stating that roles should align with strengths rather than societal norms.

“My father was a go-getter; he supervised building, painting, and gardening, tasks that my mother or I couldn’t do. My mother managed the kitchen.

“It’s not necessarily that he has to cook or clean because you cook and clean. If there’s division of labour in the home and maybe if you own your parts, you may not need to resent him because if he also said, go and do the gardening, go and supervise the mason, you may not also be cut out for that,” she stated.

She suggested that women can also get help through the use of professional help and labour-saving devices to make their roles easier.

“The virtuous woman had servants. Now we have labour-saving devices. We have ways you can plan so that you get the help you need. Maybe you can save towards a washing machine, maybe you can save towards a dishwasher. And then also you can train your children to also do a part, even if they are boy children,” she added.

She advised that such issues be examined with a proper lens and that couples shouldn’t be carried away by external influences.

“These gender battles are not necessary. We need to look at it objectively. Some people have chefs, but maybe that chef is brought by your husband, or your husband pays that chef so that the load of cooking may be taken away from you.

“So, we need to look at it well so that we don’t throw the baby out with the bath water,” she warned.

Held on June 31, 2025, at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra under the theme “Arise Shine and Impact”, the Woman Redefined Conference sought to empower, transform and uplift women from all walks of life.

Activities included breakout sessions, exhibitions, performances, and networking sessions that highlighted the achievements of women.

Ayine has abandoned what he taught us

Private legal practitioner and member NPP member, Alex Gyamfi Private legal practitioner and member NPP member, Alex Gyamfi

Private legal practitioner and staunch NPP member, Alex Gyamfi, has taken a swipe at Attorney General Dominic Ayine, accusing him of overseeing a legal regime that contradicts the very human rights values he once upheld.

Speaking during a panel discussion on Asaase Radio, Gyamfi expressed deep disappointment in the Attorney General’s perceived silence and complicity in a series of state actions that raise eyebrows within legal and civil society circles.

“If Ayine is AG today and the very things he complained to us and asked us to learn to resist when we were students under his watch [are happening], he becomes AG and this is a man who doesn’t use politics to turn the understanding of the law,” Gyamfi stated.

Gyamfi, clearly drawing from his own personal experience under Ayine’s tutelage, lamented that the Attorney General appears to be abandoning those principles now that he occupies a powerful state office.

“But since he became AG, look at what is happening; the raiding of the former Bank of Ghana Governor’s home, to Kwabena Adu-Boahene and to Ken Ofori-Atta.

“I’m not saying he is responsible, but these are actions happening under his watch, a principal advisor to the government,” he added.

His comments came in the context of recent law enforcement actions, including the high-profile searches and interrogations involving former public officials.

While Gyamfi stopped short of accusing Ayine of direct involvement, he emphasized the Attorney General’s constitutional role as the principal legal advisor to the government, an office that should embody fairness and restraint.

National Vaccine Institute to Partner UHAS on Vaccine Manufacturing

0

By Michael Foli Jackidy

Ho (V/R), June 1, GNA – The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Vaccine Institute (NVI), Dr. Sodzi Sodzi-Tettey, has affirmed the Institute’s readiness to collaborate with the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in vaccine manufacturing and research.

Speaking as guest speaker at the Second Session of the Ninth Congregation of UHAS on Saturday, May 31, Dr. Sodzi-Tettey noted that while Ghana’s current focus is on producing existing vaccines, greater investment is needed in the development of new vaccines to combat emerging pathogens and future pandemics.

“This is where institutions like UHAS are essential. We must prioritise vaccine research and development to stay ahead of future public health threats,” he said.

He recounted a recent visit he led alongside a delegation from the European Union and GIZ-NVI partners to meet with the UHAS Vice Chancellor and her Vaccine Research and Development team.

“To put it mildly, we were all deeply impressed,” he said. “The visit spurred the mobilisation of initial support to strengthen R&D capacity under the EU-funded PharmaVax project.”

Dr. Sodzi-Tettey said the NVI, under the Team Europe framework, continues to work with EU partners and other stakeholders to enhance Ghana’s vaccine research infrastructure, adding that UHAS’s human capital would be vital to national vaccine goals.

He encouraged graduates to stay grounded in their values:
“You will always face choices. Choose the path that aligns with your values, even if it is harder—it is the path of excellence.”

Vice Chancellor Prof. Lydia Aziato announced the introduction of several new academic programmes for the 2024/2025 academic year.

These include: Doctor of Medical Laboratory Sciences (6-year undergraduate), Bachelor of Health Service Administration (4-year undergraduate), Combined Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Psychology with options in Clinical Psychology, Neuropsychology, and Counselling Psychology (6-year track), MPhil Midwifery, MPhil and Ph.D. in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and Pharmacognosy

She also noted the launch of a Professional Practice Certificate Course (PPCC) in the School of Sports and Exercise Medicine for health club managers, fitness instructors, sports teachers, and coaches, which began in September 2024.

Additionally, the University’s Governing Council approved key policies, including: UHAS Credit Union Policy, Institutional Repository (UHASSPACE) Policy, Guidelines for the UHAS Simulation Centre, Establishment of the Directorate of Procurement and Supply

Prof. Aziato reported progress on the UHAS Main Bypass Road, awarded to First Sky Limited. The first layer of bitumen has been completed, but work stalled in January 2025, with kerb and walkway construction unfinished. She added that the Department of Urban Roads has repackaged outstanding internal roadworks and submitted the proposal to the Head Office.

Mrs. Bernice Evenunye Akosua Atsu from the School of Nursing and Midwifery, the Valedictorian, praised the Vice Chancellor and lauded the ceremony’s theme: “A Paragon Within Normalized Systemic Decay.” She decried rising moral decay, pointing to corruption and environmental harm, especially illegal mining (galamsey).

She urged fellow graduates to uphold integrity and values: adding that “Let us be resilient in adversity and strive to make a positive impact.”

A total of 957 students, mainly from sandwich and postgraduate programmes, graduated during this session, bringing the total number of UHAS graduates for the 2023/2024 academic year to 2,476. The first session in November 2024 saw 1,519 graduates.

Council Chairman Prof. Kodzo Gavua noted this was the highest number of graduates in the university’s history. Since its first graduation in July 2016, UHAS has trained over 11,000 health professionals, many of whom are serving across Ghana.

“We are committed to becoming the preferred destination for training health professionals in Ghana and Africa,” he said.

Prof. Gavua also appealed to management to enhance the experience of sandwich programme students, especially nursing mothers, and pregnant students.

NDC youth in Bibiani-Anwhiaso-Bekwai appeals to President Mahama to appoint Nana Yaw Berimah to Gold Board

0

By Daniel Akwasi Nuako

Sefwi Bekwai (WN/R), June 1, GNA — The Concern Youth of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bibiani-Anhwaiso-Bekwai Constituency of the Western North Region have called on President John Dramani Mahama to consider appointing Nana Yaw Berimah the Constituency Chairman, to the Ghana Gold Board.

They expressed disappointment that Nana Berimah had been left out of the President’s appointment despite his numerous efforts and sacrifices to reclaiming the Bibiani-Anhwaiso-Bekwai Constituency seat from the NPP after twenty years.

At a press conference held at Sefwi Bekwai, Mr Emmanuel Kyei Mensah, the Convener of the group, said the failure of the President to consider the NDC Constituency Chairman for the area to any role would not only be disappointing, but demoralising.

He explained that the chairman had gained sufficient experience and distinguished himself throughout his thirty years in the party, hence, he would perform creditably when given the opportunity to serve the Board.

According to him, Nana Yaw Berimah was born and raised Bekwa Mining Municipality with three different reputable Mining companies, namely Asante Gold Cooperation in Bibiani, Chirano Gold Mines in Chirano and Koantwi Mines in Manse among others, which made him experienced and capable for a Gold Board Role.

Mr Mensah said: “We urge the NDC leadership and President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider their decision and recognise the tremendous contributions of Chairman Yaw Berimah ahead of the 2024 elections.”

He continued: “Nana Yaw Berimah has held several positions in the party from branch executive to Constituency chairman. His exceptional role as a Constituency chairman made the party more attractive to the youth prior to the 2024 elections and subsequently led to the victory of the Bibiani seat.”

Mr Mensah stated that his appointment would not only be a testament to his hard work and dedication, but also a demonstration of the NDC’s commitment to rewarding party faithful for loyalty.

Fans flood social media with reactions to the Ghanaian adult film star’s viral post.

Daisy Melanin, a Ghanaian adult film actress, is making headlines again online after issuing a humorous challenge to her followers, which instantly went viral.

Daisy took to her social media channels and asked a funny yet attention-grabbing question:

“Describe me with just one word.”

And just like that, the internet answered – quickly and loudly.

Within minutes, her comment box was inundated with messages from supporters, detractors, and curious spectators. The responses ranged from positive descriptors like “bold,” “confident,” and “goddess,” to more daring tags like “wild,” “unapologetic,” and even “queenpin.”

The one-word challenge, despite its simplicity, sparked widespread discussion online. While some complimented her for owning her image and being bold, others rekindled discussions over morality, freedom of expression, and the state of Ghana’s changing entertainment industry.

Despite the various reactions, one thing is clear: Daisy Melanin knows how to keep the emphasis on herself, whether through her work, persona, or ability to start a discussion with a few words.

Daisy continues to capture attention with bold actions and unapologetic confidence, despite the fact that Ghana’s adult entertainment industry is controversial and sometimes ridiculed. Her fan base, particularly on social media, appears to be constantly growing — and this viral challenge simply adds to her already-rising profile.

Read Dr Nkrumah’s ‘letter of consolation’ to Dr Abrefa Busia after 1972 coup

0

Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia (L), Dr Kwame Nkrumah (R) Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia (L), Dr Kwame Nkrumah (R)

Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, in a historically emotional letter offered “consolation” to Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia following the overthrow of Busia’s government by the Ghana Army.

A post shared by Sika Official’s X account on Saturday, May 31, 2025 revisited Nkrumah’s letter drawing striking parallels between the circumstances that led to his own ouster and those now facing his successor.

Nkrumah began by stating, “I have just heard on the air that your government which came to power I barely three years ago has been toppled by the Ghana Army.”

He then highlighted the bitter irony, “It is rather significant that most of the evils of which my government and I were accused and which were the main reasons for the overthrow of my administration were apparently the same reasons that motivated the army take-over of your regime.”

The letter adopted a reflective, almost cautionary tone, as Nkrumah suggested Busia subsequently understood the consequences of unreasoned criticism.

“I am sure that you now realise that those who criticise other people without bothering to assign good reasons for their criticisms eventually end up as victims of their own circumstances,” he recounted.

“You will also appreciate the fact that those who sow a wind reap a whirlwind, and after you have finished spoiling other people, you will be surprised to find out that you have spoiled yourself,” he added a proverb to emphasise his point.

Nkrumah defended his own legacy, asserting that during his 15-year tenure, he strived to improve the economic conditions of Ghanaians, acknowledging the unexpected difficulties which were inevitable and for which my people were unprepared.

He pointed to tangible achievements as undeniable evidence of his impact, “Nevertheless, there is evidence of some of my achievements in Ghana, which you, of all people, can’t pretend to deny the fact that I made Ghana what you found it when the same army overthrew my regime.”

He listed several monumental projects as his “handwork,” including the Akosombo Dam, Tema Harbor, Tema Oil Refinery, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, and VALCO.

Beyond infrastructure, Dr Kwame Nkrumah emphasised what he considers his most significant contribution.

“The most important contribution I have made to the personality of the black man was that during my tenure of office as President of the Republic of Ghana, I made the African proud of his heritage,” the letter stated.

He also credited his leadership with inspiring political emancipation across the continent.

“Today, throughout the African world, many countries have attained political emancipation as a result of the torchlight I lit in Ghana which my own people including you (Kofi Abrefa Busia) did not appreciate,” the letter added.

The letter also noted the accusations leveled against his own government, which he viewed as a deliberate attempt to discredit him and pave the way for Busia’s leadership.

Nkrumah stated that since his overthrow six years prior and Busia’s assumption of power in late 1969, he has been “watching closely,” implying a continuous observation of Ghanaian political developments.

Bus plunges off bridge in northern Nigeria, killing 22 athletes

A bus crash in Nigeria’s northern state of Kano State, has killed 22 athletes A bus crash in Nigeria’s northern state of Kano State, has killed 22 athletes

A bus crash in Nigeria’s northern state of Kano has killed 22 athletes returning home from a national sports event, according to the local governor.

The bus, which was reportedly carrying more than 30 passengers, plunged off the Chiromawa Bridge on the Kano-Zaria expressway on Saturday, Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf told The Associated Press news agency.

The exact cause of the accident was not known, but the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said it “might have occurred as a result of fatigue and excessive speed” after a long overnight trip.

The survivors of the crash were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Yusuf said the athletes, who were accompanied by their coaches and sporting officials, were representing Kano State at the Nigerian National Sports Festival, held about 1,000km (620 miles) to the south in Ogun State.

He declared Monday a day of mourning for the state. His deputy, Aminu Gwarzo, said the families of the victims would receive 1 million naira (about $630) and food supplies as support.

The National Association of Nigerian Students released a statement, Nigerian daily The Guardian reported, saying the “heartbreaking” incident had “cast a shadow of grief over the entire nation, particularly the youth and sports communities”.

Road accidents are common in Africa’s most populous country, in part due to poor road conditions and lax enforcement of traffic laws.

In March, at least six people died near the capital, Abuja, after a trailer crashed into parked vehicles and burst into flames.

Last year, Nigeria recorded 9,570 road accidents that resulted in 5,421 deaths, according to FRSC data.

The Nigerian National Sports Festival brings together athletes from the country’s 35 states every two years.

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu recently said the games, which include sports ranging from wheelchair basketball to traditional West African wrestling, represent “the unity, strength and resilience that define us as a nation”.

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to upgrade selected nursing and midwifery colleges across the country into degree-awarding institutions.

Speaking during his Thank-You tour of the Ahafo Region on Saturday, May 31, Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to improving tertiary education infrastructure, especially in underserved regions.

“We remain committed to expanding tertiary education, especially in underserved regions. In line with this, the NDC government will establish a university in the Ahafo Region to offer world-class programmes in agriculture, natural resources, and health sciences,” he stated.

Mahama emphasized that transforming health training institutions into degree-awarding colleges would not only enhance the professional development of nurses and midwives but also strengthen the country’s healthcare delivery system.

“We will upgrade selected nursing and midwifery colleges across the region into degree-awarding institutions. And we will continue the distribution of buses to SHSs and health training institutions to help academic operations,” he stated.

He further assured that the distribution of buses to senior high schools and health training institutions would continue, helping ease transportation challenges and support academic activities across the country.

Pan-African Progressive Front prepares for 80th Congress Anniversary in Ghana

0

The Pan-African Progressive Front, in collaboration with the Socialist Forum of Ghana, is ramping up preparations for a major historic commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Fifth Pan-African Congress set to take place in Accra this October.

The commemoration will not only celebrate a defining moment in Africa’s liberation history but also examine the relevance of Pan-African ideals in today’s global context.

The original Congress, held in Manchester, England, in 1945, is widely recognised as the political catalyst that ignited widespread calls for independence across Africa and the Caribbean.

To lay the groundwork for the anniversary, a virtual conference was convened on Thursday, May 29, drawing more than sixty progressive Pan-Africanists from 32 countries, including representatives of the diasporas of the United States and Brazil, joined the online conference from Pan-African activists across the continent.

The session, moderated by renowned Pan-Africanist Alby Walls, provided a platform for reflection and forward-thinking discussion.

Central to the conference agenda were issues relating to the contemporary relevance of the Fifth Pan-African Congress, the crafting of a modern Pan-African agenda and strategic plans for the upcoming commemoration.

Speaking in a virtual session, Ghanaian journalist and Pan-Africanist Kwesi Pratt Jr., alongside Senegalese activist Roland Digne, delivered key addresses and stressed the urgent need to reclaim and reignite the continental unity movement.

Participants of the session agreed that the 80th anniversary should not only honour the past but also serve as a springboard for decisive action.

Among the proposals raised was the implementation of Pan-African unity projects with a call for reparations from Western powers emerging as a powerful example of a cause that could rally broad continental support.

The veteran journalist noted, “The time has come to move from rhetoric to real, united action. Our heroes didn’t gather in Manchester just to talk. They mobilised a movement.”

Mr Pratt Jr., also a member of the Pan-African Progressive Front’s organising committee, laid out a proposal to establish a dedicated committee to oversee preparations for the 80th anniversary event. He stressed the importance of referencing the original Congress’s goals and measuring the progress made so far. He called for the formation of specialised commissions on trade union matters, women’s rights, youth engagement, and grassroots political mobilization.

He further highlighted growing concerns about foreign military interventions in Africa, particularly the NATO presence in the Sahel. Echoing the words of Kwame Nkrumah, he warned that Africa must be rebuilt “without bombs.”

“The Fifth Pan-African Congress of 1945 was a defining moment that brought together influential leaders such as Kwame Nkrumah, W.E.B. Du Bois, George Padmore, Jomo Kenyatta, and Patrice Lumumba all of whom played crucial roles in shaping Africa’s post-colonial trajectory. Their bold stand against colonialism and vision for African self-determination continue to inspire generations.

Accra is a fitting venue, it reminds us of Nkrumah’s dream and Ghana’s pivotal role in African unity. Let this be more than a commemoration and let it be a call to continue the struggle.”

Alby Walls, a representative of the All-African People’s Revolutionary Party and moderator of the event, underscored the exceptional importance of the Manchester Congress.

He described it as not only a foundational moment in the fight against imperialism and colonialism but also a model of ideological unity and strategic focus. He emphasised the need for today’s Pan-African movements to define clear steps towards unifying progressive African efforts across sectors.

The second speaker, Roland Diagne from Senegal’s FERNET organisation, provided a historical overview of events following the 1945 Congress.

He noted the enduring relevance of its resolutions, particularly in confronting neocolonialism in regions like the Sahel.

“There is a resurgence of patriotism and a deep desire for sovereignty,” he said.

He added that ECOWAS must return to its original mandate of peace and self-determinationa task he hopes Ghana’s new government will champion.

The interactive session saw 18 participants actively engage in debate. Imani Na Umoja, representing the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), advocated for a fully-fledged congress, not just a celebration.

Ouzayrou Mamane, of the Pan-African Movement for Reparations, Justice and Restoration of Historical Memory, called for reparations to be central to Africa’s push for economic independence. “Reparations are a historical necessity,” he stated.

Amina Hamani of the Niger-based MORFEPAN women’s group stressed that Pan-Africanism must evolve from symbolic rhetoric into a tangible tool for securing independence and resisting foreign interference.

Saddam Alktif of the CODESA organisation spotlighted the issue of Western Sahara, insisting that true Pan-African goals cannot be achieved while parts of the continent remain under occupation.

Humphrey Quaye, representing the Pan-African Progressive Front, reiterated the movement’s commitment to fighting neocolonialism and invited like-minded organizations to join the campaign for a united and self-determined Africa.

‘Paying dowry doesn’t mean ownership’ – Rev Dzadzra slams abusive men

Rev. Anthony Dzadzra speaking at the 2025 Woman Redefined Conference Rev. Anthony Dzadzra speaking at the 2025 Woman Redefined Conference

Pastor and marriage counsellor at Fountain Gate Chapel, Rev. Anthony Selom Dzadzra has strongly rebuked men who justify the mistreatment of women under the guise of paying dowry.

During his address at the 2025 Woman Redefined Conference in Accra, held under the theme “Arise, Shine, and Impact”, Rev. Dzadzra criticised the abusive behaviour some men exhibit after paying dowry.

“It’s bad. How can you be with somebody’s daughter, only daughter, somebody’s only sister, or somebody’s girlfriend and say because you’ve paid something called dowry, you can slap her face, take food from her, or ignore her for a month?” he questioned.

He continued, “Are you mad? You refuse to provide for her and neglect her, all because you call yourself a man?”

The pastor’s remarks drew reactions from the audience at the conference and have since sparked reactions online.

Held on May 31, 2025, at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra, the conference sought to empower, transform and uplift women from all walks of life.

Activities included breakout sessions, exhibitions, performances, and networking sessions that highlighted the achievements of women.

‘I will always support gender equality’ – John Dumelo

Deputy Minister for Agric, John Dumelo Deputy Minister for Agric, John Dumelo

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon who doubles as the Deputy Minister for Agric, John Dumelo, has reaffirmed his commitment to gender equality after an X user criticised his focus on empowering women in in agriculture.

On May 30, 2025, the Deputy Minister posted about the launch of the $87 million Bridge in Agriculture Programme, an initiative aimed at providing affordable capital and technical support for young entrepreneurs in the sector, especially women who own Small and Medium Enterprises (SME, s).

He wrote, “Yesterday, on behalf of my boss, Hon Eric Opoku, I launched the $87m Bridge in Agriculture Programme, an initiative aimed at providing affordable capital and technical support for the youth, especially women who own SMEs in the agricultural space in Ghana. Kudos to Mastercard Foundation and all financial entities involved for this transformative”

However, an X user named Emmanuelson expressed disappointment in the post shared by John Dumelo, questioning the emphasis on women, saying, “Hon. What’s especially women?

It’s becoming annoying these days, the way you guys want to always prioritise women and neglect the men. Let’s all benefit from it. Equality, you guys are preaching, and so it should be.”

John Dumelo, reacting to the concerns of Emmanuelson, stated, “No one is neglecting the men. Women have always been marginalized for centuries when it comes to opportunities. We won’t let that happen in the agricultural space. I will always support gender equality.”

The issue of gender equality has raised a lot of debates in Ghana and across Africa. Some argue for equal distribution of resources, while others highlight the importance of an intervention to address historical and systematic disparities.

GAEC key to solving Ghana’s development challenges – Yaw Frimpong Addo

0

The delegation was received at the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS) The delegation was received at the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS)

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment, Science and Technology, Yaw Frimpong Addo, has described the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) as the “epicentre of solutions” to many of Ghana’s developmental challenges.

He expressed both optimism and concern after listening to a presentation on GAEC’s work in nuclear science and its wide-ranging applications across health, agriculture, water resource management, oil and gas, energy, telecommunications, and industry.

“GAEC is the epicentre of solutions to many of our national problems. I cringed when I heard the presentations on your mandate, research outcomes, and technologies, because despite the solutions available, the Commission is not receiving the support it deserves,” Addo said.

He cited, for instance, how a nuclear facility in another country is used to preserve bananas for up to six months without spoilage, contrasting it with Ghana’s persistent post-harvest losses despite having similar facilities.

Addo, who is also the Member of Parliament for Manso Adubia, made these remarks last Friday during a working visit by the Committee to the Commission’s headquarters at Kwabenya in Accra.

The visit formed part of the Committee’s oversight responsibilities and aimed to deepen engagement with scientific institutions to support national development.

The delegation was received at the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS), where a comprehensive presentation highlighted GAEC’s contributions to solving real-world problems through the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology.

Following the briefing, the Committee toured several of GAEC’s laboratories and research facilities. Members were also shown portions of the Commission’s land currently under threat from encroachment.

At one of the affected sites, the Committee expressed deep concern over the illegal activities of land guards, who had taken over parts of the Commission’s land and begun constructing buildings. The land guards fled upon seeing the Committee members and the military personnel accompanying them.

With military support, the Committee oversaw the dismantling of some unauthorised structures and confiscated construction equipment found at the site. The Committee pledged continued support to the Commission in protecting its lands and addressing the encroachment menace.

During an interaction with staff, GAEC raised concerns about inadequate funding and limited revenue generation due to the standardised Fees and Charges regime set by Parliament. This framework, they noted, prevents the Commission from charging commercial rates for critical services.

In response, Addo assured GAEC of the Committee’s readiness to address the issue.

“If the Commission cannot get the financial support it needs through direct government allocation, then it is necessary to take a second look at the Fees and Charges structure applicable to GAEC,” he stated.

He also urged GAEC to intensify its public education and stakeholder engagement efforts to raise awareness of its innovations and attract broader support.

“Let people know what GAEC is doing. If someone out there needs your services and doesn’t know you exist, that’s a problem,” Addo emphasised.

He encouraged the Commission to maintain close communication with Parliament, particularly when drafting science-related policies, and pledged the Committee’s continued support.

“If you’re developing science-related policies or need legislative backing, just prompt us. The onus lies on us to champion the cause of GAEC and other scientific institutions. Our doors are open. We need more engagement and collaboration to fast-track the country’s development.”

The Ranking Member of the Committee, Professor Hamza Adam, who is also the MP for Kumbungu, commended GAEC for its work and called for renewed attention to the challenges facing the Commission.

He stressed the vital role of science in national development but noted that its appreciation remains low—even among some Members of Parliament.

Professor Adam attributed this gap to the technical nature of scientific research, which can be difficult for non-scientists to understand and grasp. He therefore urged GAEC to simplify its communication and make its work more accessible.

“Science must be communicated in a way that people can connect with. When the public and decision-makers understand its value, they are more likely to support it,” he said.

Established in 1963, GAEC is Ghana’s foremost institution for nuclear science research and its application to sustainable development. Its work spans key areas including radiotherapy and cancer treatment, food security and preservation, water quality assessment, and clean energy research.

South African artist creates space where memory resists erasure

0

Bob Jeffrey, the chief executive of the International Centre of Photography (ICP), says such is the “enduring power” of an image that it commands an “ability to shine a light on the world around us and our shared humanity.”

The ICP is the world’s leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. Since 1985, it has held the Infinity Awards that have recognised major contributions and emerging talent in the fields of photojournalism, art, fashion photography and publishing. Among the winners this year was Lebohang Kganye, who was a recipient of the Contemporary Photography and New Media award.

Kganye is a visual artist and photographer based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Although primarily a photographer, her interest in the materiality of photography is ongoing and explored in myriad ways through her use of the sculptural, performative, theatrical, and the moving image.

Kganye’s work has explored themes of personal history and ancestry whilst resonating with the history of South Africa and apartheid, specifically by incorporating the archival and performative into a practice that centres storytelling and memory as it plays out in the familial experience. Renee Harbers Liddell and Stefano Tonchi, the 2025 Infinity Awards co-chairs, who are also ICP Trustees, were impressed with not just what Kganye’s innovative work does but also where it goes. It was noted that she pushes photography into sculpture, performance, theatre, literature, montage, collage, and animation. They were impressed with how she managed to revisit images from her family archive, reworking and dialoguing with them with deeper ancestry and the legacies of apartheid in her native South Africa.

Avant-gardism

Kganye is part of the new generation of photography students who have come out of the Market Photo Workshop (MPW) in Johannesburg. Founded in 1989 by David Goldblatt, an internationally renowned documentary photographer, the MPW has reflected upon South African political struggles and sociocultural changes since its creation. The MPW’s training helped Kganye develop projects where the past intersects with the present, hoping for a different future. Drawing on double exposures, life-sized photos, cutouts, and the use of 3D space, she managed to, per the judging panel, create encounters “rooted in reality but are also fragmentary and dream-like.”

In so doing, “memory and history mingle[d] with contemporary issues” and she also manages to make “the past come back to life.” The creative voice she has managed to carve out in contemporary photographic art and visual culture is the kind that the MPW envisions. In her book titled The Market Photo Workshop in South Africa and the ‘Born Free’ Generation: Remaking Histories, Julie Bonzon, the author, says of the MPW: “Its foundation parallels a moment in time when photography was considered a ‘truth telling’ genre and an essential source of documents deployed against the apartheid regime.”

Bonzon adds that her book “reflects on the evolution of the MPW in the post-apartheid era and explores how its new generation of students engages the photographic tradition of this institution and the revolutionary times that accompanied its creation to question their present moment.” ICP described Kganye as an “innovative mixed media artist” who is “rooted in her own sense of place and time while making work that resonates with audiences worldwide.” Kganye said: “I am deeply honoured to be named a recipient of the 2025 ICP Infinity Award for Contemporary Photography and New Media.

This recognition affirms the power of storytelling and the enduring role of photography in shaping how we remember, imagine, and re-create from archival reflection.” She added: “My practice has always been rooted in the personal and the historical, in the spaces where memory resists erasure and where the archive becomes a living, breathing voice. This acknowledgment inspires me to continue to create with intention and purpose.” Besides Kganye, ICP honoured half a dozen other photographers at the 41st Annual Infinity Awards Gala.

These were: Susan Meiselas, winner of Lifetime Achievement award; Jack Davison, winner of Editorial and Commercial Photography award; the trio of Samar Abu Elouf, Nanna Heitmann and Ziv Koren, winner of the Documentary Practice and Photojournalism award; and Aldo Fallai, winner of the Special Recognition award. The work of Davison (b.1990, Essex, United Kingdom) depicts the human figure, architecture, animals, objects, landscapes and townscapes; yet his subject is always photography itself. Uncovering the surreal and the sensual in everyday life, Davison’s use of chiaroscuro, framing and exposure as instruments of abstraction draws on the history of photography.

Elouf was born and raised in the Gaza Strip, Palestine. A self-taught photojournalist, she has worked in Gaza since 2010, documenting daily life, news and the profound effects of conflict on her country. In 2023, Samar chronicled one of the deadliest military campaigns in modern history for The New York Times: Israel’s strikes on and subsequent invasion of Gaza in the aftermath of the October 7 Hamas attacks. Like many Palestinian journalists working in Gaza, Samar was simultaneously enduring a war while also documenting it. She won numerous awards for her powerful images. She previously worked with Reuters, NZZ Swiss Magazine, Middle East Eye, among others.

Fallai honoured

Born in Florence in 1943, Fallai lives and works in his native city and in Milan. With a diploma from the Istituto d’Arte in Florence, where he teaches, he opened a graphic design studio with photographer Mario Strippini and began to approach photography himself. In the mid-1970s he met Giorgio Armani, who was making his debut as a designer at the beginning of the global affirmation of Made in Italy, to which Fallai’s photography contributed significantly. His first assignment from Armani marked the start of a collaboration that continued for almost 30 years. Heitmann is a German documentary photographer and a full member of Magnum Photos.

She is one of the few Western photographers covering Russia as it wages Europe’s biggest war of conquest since World War II, documenting both its devastation and the stark dissonance between the war’s horrors and Moscow’s glorified, distorted narratives. Heitmann’s earlier work explores themes of human resilience and environmental crises, including the impact of climate change in Siberia (As Frozen Lands Burn) and the Congo Basin’s peatlands (Beneath The Trees). Heitmann is a regular contributor to The New York Times and has been published in National Geographic, The New Yorker, Time and M Le Magazine du Monde.

Her visual journalism has earned numerous accolades, including the Olivier Rebbot Award for her coverage of Russia’s Covid crisis and a World Press Photo Award for her series on wildfires. Koren has been a professional photojournalist for more than 30 years. Today, Koren works for the daily “Yedioth Ahronoth,” represents “Polaris Images” photo agency in Israel, serves as an ambassador for “Can-son” fine art paper, for “Think-Tank Photo,” as an advisor for “Canon Israel” and is working on personal projects worldwide. Koren’s photojournalism and documentary projects focus mainly on humanitarian issues in Israel and around the world such as natural disasters, conflicts, wars and pandemics.

Meiselas is a documentary photographer based in New York. She is the author of Carnival Strippers (1976), Nicaragua (1981), Kurdistan: In the Shadow of History (1997), Pandora’s Box (2001), Encounters with the Dani (2003), Prince Street Girls (2016), A Room of Their Own (2017), Tar Beach (2020) and Carnival Strippers Revisited (2022). Meiselas is well known for her documentation of human rights issues in Latin America. Her photographs are included in North American and international collections. In 1992, Meiselas was made a MacArthur Fellow and received a Guggenheim Fellowship (2015). She has been the President of the Magnum Foundation since 2007, with a mission to expand diversity and creativity in documentary photography.

Over 40 ‘rogue’ Loan Apps blacklisted for threats, blackmail

0

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has raised alarm over a growing wave of cyberbullying linked to unregulated digital lending apps, revealing a sharp spike in complaints this year. Between January and May 2025 alone, the Authority received 377 reports of abuse compared to the 228 cases recorded in 2024.

According to the CSA, the surge stems from aggressive and exploitative tactics employed by several mobile loan applications that operate outside legal and regulatory frameworks. These platforms often push unsolicited microloans to users, only to resort to harassment and intimidation to recover payments.

Victims report being blackmailed, threatened with defamation, and having their private data—including photos and contact lists—leaked to third parties. In many cases, the apps use access to users’ phone data to shame and coerce them into repayment.

A statement by the CSA said it has identified 48 such rogue apps currently operating in Ghana. Among them are Milloan, Devtage Loan, Plus Cash Arrow, Cash Arrow, FastyCredit, Lever Credit, and Upper Loan.

“These apps operate without legal backing and often disregard consumer protection laws. Engaging with them exposes users to serious risks, including data breaches, harassment, and financial loss,” the CSA cautioned in a statement.

The Authority urged Ghanaians to verify the legitimacy of digital lending platforms before use and report suspicious activity through its 24-hour cyber incident response system.

Mark Ayamga, a hopeful for the position of Upper East Regional Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on party members and Ghanaians to rally behind Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing him as a “divinely appointed leader” destined to transform Ghana.

In a passionate statement titled “Dr. Bawumia, Made Perfect in the Hands of Allah,” Ayamga, popularly known as “Biawaam”, highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s exceptional leadership, intellectual prowess, and dedication to national development.

A Leader of Substance and Vision

Ayamga chronicled Dr. Bawumia’s illustrious career, from his academic excellence to his impactful tenure as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana. He praised the former Vice President for revolutionizing Ghana’s political discourse by prioritizing ideas over insults and vision over divisiveness.

“His appearance as the key witness in the 2012 election petition changed Ghanaian politics forever,” Ayamga stated. “He demonstrated that electoral disputes could be resolved with intellect and dignity, not violence.”

“A Unifying Force for Ghana”

The NPP stalwart expressed concern over what he described as “unnecessary competition, tribalism, and self-centered ambitions” within the political landscape. He urged Ghanaians to put the nation’s interest above personal gains and support Dr. Bawumia’s leadership.

“Why can’t we rally behind this God-gifted brother to lead our nation forward?” Ayamga questioned. “History has shown that when a nation ignores its destined leaders, it takes generations to recover from that mistake.”

A Call to Action

Ayamga, who is vying for the NPP’s Upper East Regional Organizer position, emphasized that Ghana stands at a critical juncture and needs a leader like Dr. Bawumia to steer its progress.

“In Bawumia, we have a prepared, capable, and visionary leader,” he asserted. “If we let this opportunity slip away, future generations may not forgive us.”

The statement has sparked discussions among NPP members and political analysts, with many commending Ayamga’s bold stance while others debate the implications for internal party dynamics.

As the NPP prepares for its regional elections, Ayamga’s message underscores a growing sentiment among some party faithful who see Dr. Bawumia as the best candidate to lead Ghana into a new era of prosperity.

Read Full Statement below;

*Dr. Bawumia,*

*Made Perfect in the Hands of Allah.*

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a man made perfect in the hands of Allah.

We have heard, read, and witnessed how brilliant he was during his school days. Naturally, brilliant students are loved and admired by both peers and teachers, and he was no different.

From the very beginning of his working life, he gave his all, not to show off his brilliance, but to support others with innovative ideas, always in humility.

During his years working overseas, he was known for his hard work, diligence, and dedication. He excelled in whatever he put his hands to.

His time as Deputy Governor at the Bank of Ghana remains a golden chapter in the institution’s history, one that will be celebrated for generations.

When he entered politics, he brought with him a new kind of energy, an era of politics grounded in ideas, not insults; in vision, not noise.

His appearance as the key witness in the 2012 election petition changed the face of Ghanaian politics. It marked a turning point not only for our nation but for Africa, and perhaps the world, showing how electoral disputes could be addressed with intellect and dignity, not with guns and machetes.

No one can deny his instrumental role in the NPP’s victories in both the 2016 and 2020 general elections.

Whenever he speaks, even though our partisan politics makes it difficult for some to acknowledge the truth, time always proves him right. His words are not mere talk, they manifest into reality.

In the recent 2024 elections, the energy and vision he brought to both the party and the nation were undeniable. Any honest citizen, regardless of political affiliation, would recognize the blessing he is to this country

So I ask:

Why all this unnecessary competition in the name of democracy?

Why the tribalism, the regionalism, and the self-centered ambitions?

Why not rally behind this God-gifted brother to lead our nation forward?

Why can’t we put the nation above our personal interests and ambitions?

It is believed that in the life of every nation, there are divinely appointed times and people destined to make it great. And if the people of that time fail to recognize and embrace such blessings, it can take a very long time for such grace to return.

I believe this is such a time in the life of our beloved nation, Ghana. And Dr. Bawumia is that blessing.

We must not let this opportunity slip through our hands.

It is time we moved beyond partisan and personal quests for greatness and chose what is right for our country.

In Bawumia, we have a leader who is prepared, capable, and ready to help fix our beloved nation.

And the generations after us may not forgive us if we fail to act and let this grace pass us by.

Hon. Mark A Ayamga,

aka, Biawaam..

Government must secure investments in Ghana’s upstream petroleum industry – PIAC

0

File photo of barrels of oil File photo of barrels of oil

The Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) has called on the Ministry of Energy and its allied agencies to intensify efforts to attract investments into Ghana’s upstream petroleum industry.

This recommendation follows PIAC’s observation that no new petroleum agreements have been signed between the government and private companies in the sector since 2019.

According to the Committee’s 2024 Annual Report, crude oil production has been on a consistent decline for the fifth consecutive year.

Production dropped from a peak of 71.44 million barrels in 2019 to 48. 25 million barrels in 2024, representing an average annual decline of 7.4 per cent over the five-year period.

Richard Ellimah, a Member of PIAC representing Civil Society Organizations, stated that, “once we are not attracting investments into the sector, it means that production levels may also be affected because we are not getting any new companies to shore up production.”

“And if production levels keep dwindling that may also affect the government’s revenue, this is a serious matter because looking at the state of the economy now we cannot afford to be losing out on potential revenues from petroleum”, he submitted.

He made these remarks at a Regional Public Forum on the Management and Use of Ghana’s Petroleum Revenues in Kumasi.

Ellimah said for the government to attract investors, it could organize roadshows around the world selling Ghana as a very safe destination for petroleum investment.

Again, the government could engage the big shots in the petroleum industry around the world, adding that, “when we get them, we can be sure that going forward, we can ramp up production levels and revenues will also increase.”

In addition to investment promotion, PIAC recommended that the government should prioritize the construction of a second gas processing plant to expand the country’s capacity of taking up more raw gas.

Ellimah indicated that gas flaring remained a major issue, explaining that, Ghana’s Gas Policy mandated zero flaring which means no company is permitted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to flare any gas.

“When the news of the cabinet’s approval for construction of the second gas processing plant was announced, it was heartwarming. This means it will create avenues for us to utilize the gas that would otherwise have been flared. When you flare it creates environmental problems but once we use it, goes to promote our own economic development”, he emphasized.

According to the PIAC 2024 Annual Report, Ghana could not recover a Make Up Gas (MUG) volume of 1,186.81 MMSCF, which had already been paid for from the Sankofa Gye Nyame (SGN) Field in 2024.

This led to forfeiture of paid raw gas that could have been utilized.

Fiifi Coleman revives ‘The Dilemma of a Ghost’ to celebrate Ghanaian culture

0

In a bid to reconnect modern audiences with Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, acclaimed director and actor Fiifi Coleman is set to stage the timeless play The Dilemma of a Ghost.

The production seeks to celebrate the values and traditions of the “good old days” while underscoring their continued relevance in today’s society. Coleman hopes to use theatre as a medium to preserve Ghanaian cultural identity and provoke reflection on the erosion of communal values.

Speaking during a review of the play on Channel One TV’s The Chat on Saturday, May 31, Coleman explained that the stage production aims to make the past both relatable and engaging for contemporary audiences.

“We are keeping everything in the good old days in the stage play. The idea is to make the good old days acceptable and interesting to nowadays,” he said.

He emphasized that the play recreates traditional settings and lifestyles to remind Ghanaians of the communal spirit that once defined society. He also expressed concern over the gradual decline of cultural norms and social discipline.

“I want you to come and watch the play and say ‘wow.’ This is how in the olden days the houses were built, and people lived where everybody could go to anybody’s house. You’ll find all those nuances in there,” he noted.

Coleman believes storytelling and theatre can help restore a sense of moral direction in Ghanaian communities.

“There are some little elements of who we are and where we are coming from that should seep through. It guides us, instructs us on how we show discipline, how we respect people, what is accepted and what is not, like not talking back at elders. We are losing it,” he lamented.

The Dilemma of a Ghost is expected to not only entertain but also inspire conversations about the importance of preserving cultural identity in the face of rapid modernisation.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has issued a directive to former Finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta, demanding that he presents himself at its headquarters on Monday, June 2, 2025.

The OSP warned that failure to comply with the summons will result in severe consequences.

In a statement on Sunday, June 1, 2025, the OSP cautioned that should Ken Ofori-Atta fail to honour the summons, he will be reinstated on its list of wanted persons and officially declared a fugitive, according to a report by citinewsroom.com.

It added that it would initiate processes to issue an INTERPOL Red Notice, which could lead to his international arrest and extradition.

Background>/b>

Ken Ofori-Atta is currently under investigation for five major issues during his tenure.

This includes the contractual arrangements related to petroleum and minerals revenue assurance between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

Also, the termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC), procurement procedures and financial transactions linked to the National Cathedral project, a Ministry of Health contract for the purchase and maintenance of 307 ambulances with Service Ghana Auto Group Limited.

It also entails the handling and disbursement of funds from the Tax P-Fund Account of the GRA.

In January 2025, the OSP formally notified Ken Ofori-Atta that he should appear in person on February 10, 2025.

His lawyers informed the OSP that he was abroad indefinitely for medical reasons and offered to represent him in his absence.

The OSP rejected the claim of indefinite absence and demanded a firm return date, warning of legal consequences if he failed to comply. It also reminded that legal representatives cannot respond to criminal charges on behalf of clients.

On February 10, 2025, his lawyers submitted a doctor’s note stating he was undergoing tests and possibly surgery, with no clear return date.

Two days later, the OSP declared Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive from justice and acted on an arrest warrant.

On February 18, 2025, Ken Ofori-Atta appealed to the OSP to remove his name from the wanted list and provided a definite return date in May 2025.

The OSP accepted his assurance and subsequently took his name off the list.

In March 2025, the former Minister of Finance filed a lawsuit against the Special Prosecutor, seeking compensation for what he described as an unlawful declaration of him as wanted and requested the removal of related publications from the OSP’s social media channels.

The High Court in Accra (Human Rights Court) heard an interim application on March 28, 2025, in which Ken Ofori-Atta sought to bar the OSP from declaring him wanted again.

Following these legal proceedings, the OSP has now given a final deadline of June 2, 2025, for Ken Ofori-Atta to report in person to its headquarters.

According to the OSP, if he fails to appear, his name will be added back to the list of wanted persons, and he will once again be declared a fugitive from justice. The office will also begin the process to request an INTERPOL Red Notice.
