Inflation To Hit 17.2% In 2025 – World Bank

0

The World Bank is forecasting an inflation of 17.2% for Ghana in 2025, higher than the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme target of 15%.

However, it is projecting a drastic reduction of inflation -9.4%- in 2026.

In its April 2025 Africa Pulse Report, the World Bank estimated that Ghana’s inflation rate would be 8.0% in 2027.

“Of 47 countries in the region, 14 still have inflation rates of two digits or more—including Angola, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Sudan, and Zimbabwe, among others. By 2027, the number of countries with two-digit or higher inflation rates is expected to fall to six,” it said.

It pointed out that inflation will continue converging across African countries, but it may hit some bumps in the road if the risk of increased inflation materializes as a result of the implementation of more restrictive trade policies around the world.

The increase in the interquartile range reflects that some countries still have inflation rates in the double digits or higher—such as Angola, Burundi, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Sudan, and Zimbabwe, among others.

Meanwhile, the median inflation rate in Sub-Saharan Africa declined from 7.1% in 2023 to 4.5% in 2024, and it is projected to bounce back slightly to an annual average rate of 4.6% in 2025–27.

The World Bank indicated that a deceleration of inflation was recorded by about 70% of the countries in the region in 2024. The drop for most countries can be explained by the gradual easing of supply chain pressures, the effects of contractionary monetary and fiscal policy, as well as greater currency stability. However, the variability of inflation across countries remains high.

Unauthorised Airing Of Nigerian Movies: Actress Apologises To Mahama Over Comments

0

Nigerian actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli has publicly apologized to President John Mahama following her controversial remarks regarding the unauthorized airing of her film “Twin Deception” by certain Ghanaian television stations.

In an Instagram post on April 23, 2025, Omoni Oboli expressed her dismay over the unauthorized broadcast of her film, which was released on her official YouTube channel the same day.

She criticized the actions of the TV stations, stating, “This issue of terrestrial Ghanaian TV stations showing our movies is utterly shameful.”

Omoni Oboli’s initial comments included a call to action directed at the Ghanaian President, which sparked backlash from some Ghanaians who urged her to address the matter with the appropriate authorities instead.

“I love my Ghanaian besties. I do. Ghanaians are our cousins, and cousins don’t fight. We banter, but at the end of the day, it’s all love. You see, this issue of terrestrial Ghanaian TV stations showing our movies it’s utterly shameful. My movie THE TWIN DECEPTION was released on my YouTube channel on Friday and was shown on TV stations the same Friday. “I’m going straight to the Ghanaian President this time. Cos this is now a disgrace!” she wrote on Instagram.

One commenter, identified as Symplysina, stated, ” Going to the President because of 4, what? Go to the minister and the appropriate authorities in charge of that sector, because yeah, it’s wrong for some private TV stations to do what they’re doing. It’s not the country’s TV stations that are doing this stuff; leave our President to concentrate on us. Respect our Presidency. It’s not every issue you will have to drag our President into. Ghana Television (GTV) doesn’t do that, so madam, respect yourself and not drag our President into this.”

In response to the criticism, Omoni Oboli acknowledged the discontent among her followers and clarified her intentions. She wrote, “Just got around to reading comments and I see some of my Ghanaian besties are unhappy that I tagged the President even though it was done respectfully. To us here, we tag our President and leaders to issues, and it’s not considered out of place. Been working with some of the agencies in Ghana for over a month now, and nothing tangible has happened. I’m removing the tag. One day love.”

Government will stop funding supporters’ travel to tournaments – Sports Minister Kofi Adams

0

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced a significant policy shift, stating that the government will no longer fund the travel of supporters to international tournaments.

The move, according to the minister, is aimed at ensuring responsible use of public funds and encouraging private sector involvement in the promotion of sports.

While the decision may not sit well with some sections of Ghana’s passionate supporter base, Adams believes that corporate Ghana can play a crucial role in bridging the gap.

Speaking on the matter, Adams made his position clear: “I don’t think that government must spend money to fly fans to tournaments. We can bring corporates to send supporters, but not government money,” he said on Starr FM.

In previous tournaments, the government has often borne the cost of transporting and accommodating large contingents of fans, especially during major competitions like the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the FIFA World Cup.

The new direction signals a departure from that tradition, potentially redefining the dynamics of fan involvement at international events.

Govt withdraws injunction against anti-galamsey protest – Deputy AG

0

Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, has announced that the government has withdrawn a legal application seeking to halt a planned protest against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The move follows an earlier action filed by the Greater Accra Regional Police Command at the Accra High Court, seeking an injunction to stop the demonstration organised by the Generational Rights Protection Society (GRPS).

The GRPS, led by media personalities Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah and Kwame Appiah Kubi, is mobilising the protest to demand stronger action against illegal mining operations across the country.

In their affidavit, the police argued that the organisers failed to respond to official communications and had not secured permission to use Liberation Square — a restricted area under the control of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Additionally, they cited national security concerns, pointing to intelligence reports warning of possible infiltration by “undesirable elements,” due to the lack of participant data.

However, in a Facebook post on Friday, Justice Srem-Sai disclosed that the Attorney-General’s Department had directed the withdrawal of the injunction following consultations with national security and intelligence agencies.

“After two meetings with the security and intelligence agencies yesterday, the Attorney-General directed that the application for injunction to restrain the anti-galamsey demonstrators be withdrawn.

“The injunction application was duly withdrawn this morning. The demonstration will be allowed to go on EXACTLY as the demonstrators have proposed.

“The right to demonstrate is protected by the Constitution. President John Mahama understands the true meaning of this right.

“His Attorney-General, Dr Dominic Ayine, will not violate or allow anyone to violate the citizen’s right to demonstrate. Da yie,” the Facebook post stated.

Following the withdrawal, the planned protest — scheduled for April 28–29, 2025 — is expected to commence at Obra Spot (Kwame Nkrumah Circle), continue along the Ring Road, and end at Liberation Square, opposite Jubilee House. The event will run from 4 PM until midnight.

Lack of adequate funding impeding research activities – UCC Vice Chancellor

By Prince Acquah

Cape Coast, April 25, GNA – The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has made a fervent appeal to all stakeholders, including the alumni community for support to aid its research activities.

Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, the Vice Chancellor of the University, noted that the school lacked adequate funding to further its research works, a situation which fettered both academic and national progress.

Adjudged the topmost ranked university in Ghana and West Africa, the Vice Chancellor stressed that the lack of adequate research funds did not augur well for UCC, describing it as a “major challenge.”

The Vice Chancellor made the appeal at the 15th session of the university’s 57th congregation devoted for graduands of the School of Graduate Studies.

During the colourful and blissful ceremony, UCC graduated 1,187 postgraduate students.

They included 46 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), 102 Master of Philosophy (MPhil), 17 Master of Commerce, three Master of Nursing and 605 Master of Education students.

Master of Business Administration had 64 students, Master of Science, 184; Master of Arts, 124; and Postgraduate Diploma in Education, 42.

Beyond the challenge with research, the Vice Chancellor noted that the university still grappled with infrastructural deficit despite the progress made so far.

Prof Boampong thus expressed the university’s resolve to intensify efforts to mobilise the necessary resources to support research activities, expand infrastructure, improve access to postgraduate education and enhance scholarship support for postgraduate students.

“We will continue to mobilise the needed resources to build the needed infrastructure that will create more successes and enhance access to postgraduate education,” he said.

“In line with our corporate strategy to improve academic studies, we will internationalise our research activities and continue to work with other stakeholders to increase enrolment of international students,” he stated.

The Vice Chancellor highlighted some achievements of the School of Graduate Studies in the past year, including the organisation of the fifth international conference which was greatly patronised.

To deal with the slow pace in the examination of students’ theses, he announced an upward review of theses examination fee (stipends paid to lecturers) for the assessment of students’ research, from GHC5:00 to GHC10:00 by the University’s Governing Council.

Prof Boampong underscored the importance UCC attached to graduate education and pledged management’s commitment to implement initiatives that would equip graduates to respond to contemporary societal needs.

“Our focus remains on producing graduates who are not only hand-skilled but also deeply committed to the values of integrity, service and innovation,” he added.

It is a fallacy to say King Promise will win out of ‘pity’ – PRO

Afrobeats artiste, King Promise Afrobeats artiste, King Promise

Public Relations Officer for King Promise’s team, Tilly Akua Nipaa, has dismissed suggestions that a potential Artiste of the Year win at this year’s Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) would be based on pity.

According to her, King Promise’s success is the result of hard work and undeniable impact.

This comes as anticipation builds ahead of the awards night, scheduled for April 10, 2025.

Some critics have speculated that a win for King Promise could serve as a consolation after losing the title to his rival, Stonebwoy, last year.

However, in a candid interview with Graphic Showbiz, Tilly argued that King Promise’s record-breaking year speaks for itself.

With 10 nominations, up from six last year, and four major hits, including Paris, Continental, Sexy, and Favourite Story, she emphasised that his growing reach and influence make him a deserving contender.

“You can clearly see the double effort put in by the artiste during the year under review compared to the previous year.

“If anyone says King Promise will win out of pity, it’s a fallacy. With these numbers, you can’t say he didn’t work hard, he’s doubled what he did last year,” she said.

Tilly also highlighted his international dominance, with performances across Asia, Europe, and North America, reinforcing his position as a global act.

While acknowledging the stiff competition from the likes of Stonebwoy, King Paluta, and Black Sherif, she maintained that King Promise’s artistry, consistency, and impact set him apart.

“If it’s about the work done in 2024, compare the artistry head-to-head and you’ll see how King Promise stands ahead of them all,” she added.

Nonetheless, Tilly admitted that winning ultimately depends on votes, urging fans to throw their support behind him.

“It’s not just about having a good chance; it’s about securing votes. The real question is, did the artiste’s team actively vote, mobilise supporters, and campaign effectively?” she asked.

I want all of us to be sacked – NPP Vice Chairman calls for mass removal of party executives

NPP First National Vice Chairman, Dankwah Smith Butey NPP First National Vice Chairman, Dankwah Smith Butey

Following the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) significant defeat in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, First National Vice Chairman of the party Dankwah Smith Butey has called for the dismissal of all national executives, including himself.

In an interview on Sompa FM, Chairman Butey described the party’s leadership as a failure, pointing to the reduction of parliamentary seats from 137 in 2020 to 88 in 2024 as a “shameful” outcome.

“For me, I want all the national executives to be sacked, including myself. I, as First Vice Chairman, am saying that everyone must be sacked, including myself. We have failed. What else are we going to do? We were given 137 seats and ended up reducing it to 88. Is that not shameful?” Butey stated.

He emphasised the need for fresh leadership, arguing that the party does not belong to any individual and that its interests must supersede personal and financial ambitions.

Chairman Butey criticised executives seeking re-election, accusing them of prioritising personal gain over the party’s welfare.

“Every executive member who is now thinking of seeking re-election does not have the interest of the party at heart. They are only interested in their pockets,” he said.

He also rejected claims that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was solely responsible for the defeat, asserting that the executives failed to hold him accountable.

“We sat aloof and watched him do it, and now you are complaining… we must accept that we caused our defeat, not Akufo-Addo,” he added.

The NPP’s 2024 loss, which saw the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secure 183 parliamentary seats in a landslide victory, has been attributed to internal discord and leadership failures, as highlighted in a party post-election report.

The party in a bid to rebuild following the defeat has declared a nationwide ‘Thank You Tour’ to be embarked on by flagbearer candidates and leadership of the party.

By Jerry Azanduna

Techiman (Bono East), April 25, GNA – Mr Kweku Adjei Mensah, the Techiman Metropolitan Chief Executive (Mayor), has affirmed the commitment of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to revere and engage traditional authorities actively for national development.

As the embodiment of the people and custodian of land, culture and tradition, he said the role of chiefs and queens towards accelerated national development could not be overemphasised and assured the government commitment to actively engage them.

Mr Mensah said peaceful co-existence between the NDC, and the traditional authorities ought to be deepened for the purpose of development, saying “peace is an expensive commodity that we all have to preserve if we desire or yearn for development”.

“The reset agenda of President John Dramani Mahama to spur rapid socio-economic development and build a better society for all,” he stated.

Nana Takyi Firi, the Krontrihene of Techiman and the Acting President of the Techiman Traditional Council, said the council was also ready to collaborate with the Metropolitan Assembly and to bring the development of the area to the next level.

I’ll not renew Zoomlion contract in its current state

0

The Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale, has voiced concerns over the terms and conditions of the contract between the Government of Ghana and Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

In a Facebook post, Basintale revealed that the existing contract stipulates a monthly salary of GHC250 for Zoomlion workers.

The YEA Boss criticised the Akufo-Addo government for agreeing to such clauses.

“For 7 years, 9 months, the NPP renewed the Zoomlion contract in its current state, paying the Ghanaian Youth/worker Ghc250”.

He vowed to prevent the contract’s renewal in its current form due to unfavourable terms and conditions.

“I promise on my honour as I stand by the grave of my late DAD, NOT to RENEW the contract in its CURRENT STATE or FORM. It is EVIL for the Previous government to have committed to this and I SHALL STOP IT,” he wrote.

“If my mother/Brother/Sister were a Zoomlion worker, I wouldn’t be happy with either of them taking Ghc250 as Salary and as such, I can’t be happy with you, your mother, father, brother or sister taking the same.”

He reaffirmed the Mahama-led government’s commitment to resetting the country to be better, which, according to him, includes the vision that every worker is paid satisfactorily for the work done.

Films Made With AI Now Eligible For Oscars, Academy Confirms

0

Angelina Jolie, Hollywood actress

The Academy of Motion Picture, Arts and Sciences has announced that films made using artificial intelligence (AI) are now eligible to win Oscars, as long as they meet other award criteria.

In new rules released on Monday, the Academy stated that the use of AI or digital tools will “neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination.” However, human contribution will still play a key role in determining winners.

Generative AI — technology that can create video, images, music, and dialogue from text prompts — has already been used in recent Oscar-winning films. In The Brutalist, for example, AI helped improve Adrian Brody’s Hungarian accent, a performance that earned him the Best Actor award. Similarly, AI tools were used to enhance singing voices in the musical Emilia Perez.

Despite the growing presence of AI in the industry, its use remains controversial. Many actors and writers have raised concerns over losing jobs to AI and how their likeness and work may be used without permission. Safeguards around AI were part of the agreements that ended the 2023 Hollywood strikes.

The Academy also introduced a new rule requiring members to watch all nominated films in a category before voting in the final round.

While some in the film industry embrace AI’s potential, others remain skeptical. As animator Jonathan Kendrick said, “It’s like having a bad writer help you. Sure it will get an outline done, but if you need something with emotional weight, an AI isn’t going to get you an Oscar.”

Akua Pinamang Raises Alarm On Red 225

0

Akua Pinamang

GHANAIAN SOCIAL advocate and media personality, Portia Nana Akua Pinamang, has raised an urgent concern over the rising abuse of Red 225, a highly addictive opioid that is rapidly destroying the lives of Ghanaian youth.

In a recent episode of her show, “Unfiltered Thoughts”, she described the situation as a national emergency, warning that the country is burning from within.

Known on the streets as “Wonim Red,” the drug has been linked to numerous cases of public collapses, mental breakdowns, and death among young people. Current data shows that 8 percent of Ghanaian youth are engaged in hard drugs, including opioids like Red 225, while 17 percent use marijuana and 13 percent consume alcohol.

Akua Pinamang openly blamed institutions like the Food and Drugs Authority for failing to regulate the entry and distribution of the drug. She further criticised the Customs Division for allowing dangerous substances through the ports, and National Security for focusing more on monitoring citizens than tackling drug networks. She also held political leaders from both major parties responsible, for neglecting youth welfare in favour of power struggles and public appearances.

She emphasised that, addiction is a symptom of deeper issues such as unemployment, a broken education system, poverty, and a lack of proper parenting.

Akua Pinamang has called for immediate action, including the arrest of key suppliers, the establishment of national rehabilitation centres, and systemic reforms to address the root causes of youth drug addiction.

President Mahama declares 1st July as National Day of Prayers and Thanksgiving

0

President John Mahama has announced that Ghana will now observe July 1st, traditionally celebrated as Republic Day, as the country’s official National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.

The President made the declaration during the inauguration of the planning committee for the new national event. He said the peace and unity Ghana continues to enjoy should not be taken for granted.

Speaking at the event, President Mahama stated, “One of Ghana’s greatest blessings is the harmony with which we practice our diverse faiths. Christians, Muslims and traditionalists, we worship differently but we work together as one people. This is a national treasure that we must never take for granted.”

Quoting both the Qur’an and the Bible, he explained that Ghana stands as a shining example of religious tolerance in a divided world. “In a world where religion often divides, in Ghana, we shine as an example of our unity in diversity,” he said.

President Mahama cited Sura Al-Hujurat Chapter 49:13 from the Qur’an and Romans 12:18 from the Bible to emphasise the value of peaceful coexistence.

“This is the spirit with which we must move forward, and so with conviction, reverence and unity of purpose, I hereby declare the Republic Day 1st of July of every year also as Ghana’s official National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving,” he declared.

The planning committee for the event will be chaired by former minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, who pledged full commitment to making the day meaningful and unifying for all Ghanaians.

In his remarks, Mr Afriyie Ankrah said, “We assure you, Mr President and the good people of Ghana that we will discharge our duties with diligence and dedication. We understand the weight of the responsibility entrusted to us.”

He added that the event will not just be another national occasion, but a spiritual journey for the nation.

“It is about nurturing a spiritual culture of gratitude, about fostering unity in diversity and about elevating our national consciousness to appreciate the hand of God in the affairs of our country,” he said.

The committee chairman also promised to ensure broad and inclusive engagement across the country. “We will consult broadly, we will engage inclusively, we will bring everybody on board from every region, every faith, every background because the national day of thanksgiving belongs to all of us,” he assured.

With hope, Mr Afriyie said that Ghana’s example would serve as inspiration beyond its borders.

“It is our hope and prayer that the work we do will not only make Ghana proud but will serve as inspiration to other nations that the people who acknowledge God, give thanks to Him and live in unity can achieve their impossible,” he said.

‘The producer should have known better’ – Sammy Flex on Medikal and Alabaster Box lawsuit

0

Artiste manager, Sammy Flex Artiste manager, Sammy Flex

Artiste manager and media personality Sammy Flex has weighed in on the ongoing copyright controversy involving rapper Medikal and Ghanaian group Alabaster Box.

According to him, the situation appears to be an unfortunate oversight on the part of Medikal’s team, including the producer who worked on the song.

Medikal recently released a track titled Welcome to Africa, which has landed him in legal trouble with Alabaster Box. The group accuses him of unlawfully sampling their hit song Akwaaba without permission.

Speaking on Joy Prime TV, Sammy Flex expressed his belief that Medikal and his management did not deliberately use the original material with malicious intent.

“I can tell you Team Medikal had no idea of what was going to happen because that was so clear, that was so vivid, and you could not skip it,” he said.

He emphasised that the issue could have been avoided had Medikal’s management team, including the producer, exercised more diligence during the production process.

“If they knew, including the producer who worked on the song, they wouldn’t have done that. The producer should have known better. To them, they thought they were not taking the original song of Alabaster Box; they believed they were creating their own thing,” he explained.

Sammy Flex believes the situation was not born out of disregard for intellectual property, but rather a lack of awareness about the implications of sampling someone else’s music.

“I am so sure they were not aware of the implications, that’s the reason they have fallen into that trap at the moment,” he added.

CJ’s suspension was reached through consensus rather than a formal vote count – Srem-Sai

Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem Sai Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem Sai

The Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem Sai, has stated that he believes the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo was reached through consensus by the Council of State, rather than just a formal vote.

In an interview with JoyNews on April 22, 2025, regarding the Chief Justice’s suspension, Srem-Sai emphasised that the president did not act in accordance with advice.

However, he expressed confidence that the official statement clearly indicated the president made an independent decision.

“He did not act in accordance with advice. I’m sure the statement would have made it clear that the president made a decision. So, I am aware that that is what happened, and that is what the communication from the presidency also published,” he said.

When asked whether the Chief Justice’s suspension was a unanimous recommendation, the Deputy Attorney General stated that he did not believe such details would be disclosed.

He also expressed his belief that the Council of State primarily operates through consensus rather than formal voting.

“I don’t think that will be made known because the council… and I’m happy that my very learned senior, who was a member of the Council of State, would inform the public that the Council of State mostly work with consensus; they hardly go with votes and counting and all that. So, I believe that this decision or this advice also was made by way of consensus rather than by counting votes,” he stated.

About the Chief Justice’s suspension:

President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Ghana’s Chief Justice and head of the judiciary, Justice Gertrude Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

According to a statement signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the suspension follows the establishment of a prima facie case against the Chief Justice by the president, in consultation with the Council of State, in relation to three petitions filed against Justice Torkornoo.

“President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Article 146(6) of the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, determined that a prima facie case has been established in respect of three petitions against the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo,” the statement, dated Tuesday, April 22, 2025, stated.

Africa’s trade, economic growth lies on AfCFTA – World Bank

0

AfCFTA seeks to eliminate trade barriers and promote intra-African trade AfCFTA seeks to eliminate trade barriers and promote intra-African trade

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents a significant opportunity for trade growth and economic development in Africa, the World Bank has said amid recent trade tensions.

It has, therefore, urged African governments to provide an enabling environment to expand and make its markets available to each other for enhanced intra-continental trade.

In the 31st edition of the Africa’s Pulse report, the Bank noted that Sub-Saharan Africa faced heightened uncertainty due to changes in trade dynamics, regional conflict, and climate change affecting people and crops.

It also indicated that such development would have both direct and indirect impacts of policy changes materialising and evolving over time.

“African economies have the option to liberalise and diversify their markets, including leveraging the African Continent Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to boost regional trade, to expand economic activity and provide jobs for young people,” the Bank noted.

The report, focusing on “Improving governance and delivering for people in Africa,” observed that economic growth in the region was showing some resilience despite uncertainty in the global economy and restricted fiscal space.

It projected a 3.5 per cent growth for the region for 2025 with a further increase to 4.3 per cent in 2026 and 2027, citing increased private consumption and investments as inflation cools down and currencies stabilise.

The projections by the World Bank were not too far from those by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which expected the region to grow by 3.8 per cent in 2025 and improve further to 4.2 per cent in 2026.

“However, growth is still not strong enough to significantly reduce poverty and meet people’s aspirations,” the Bank flagged as a concern, urging urgent reforms to match growth opportunities with ‘good jobs’ for its young population.

“There is a growing gap between people’s aspirations for good jobs and functioning public services and often sub-optimal markets and institutions,” said Andrew Dabalen, World Bank Chief Economist for the Africa Region.

“Urgent reforms, backed by more competition, transparency and accountability, will be key to attract private investments, increase public revenue, and create more economic opportunity for millions of Africans entering the workforce each year,” he stated.

The report noted that the region was faced with high debt and declining global aid, with a decline in real income per capita in 2025 expected to be below the two per cent in peak in 2015.

It urged countries to seize the opportunity to increase efficiency in government spending to provide better access to essential services like health, education, water and electricity.

Additionally, the region was to improve public services, provide a fair tax system, stronger accountability and clear market rules to help businesses compete, grow, and create jobs, helping strengthen the relationship between governments and taxpayers, the Bank said.

We’re committed to paying better cocoa prices despite challenges

0

The Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr. Ransford Anertey Abbey, has indicated that despite the myriad of challenges bedevilling the cocoa sector, COCOBOD remains committed to improving the living conditions of cocoa farmers across the country.

Speaking at a farmers’ rally held at Attronso in the Sefwi Bekwai District during his three-day maiden visit to the Western North Region, Dr. Ransford Abbey disclosed that plans are underway to review the producer price of cocoa for the 2025/2026 season.

This, he noted, is part of efforts to demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of cocoa farmers and attracting the younger generation to the sector.

“Despite our financial constraints…the management of COCOBOD is committed to offering cocoa farmers a better price for their produce,” he emphasized.

The COCOBOD CEO  also used the opportunity to bemoan the ageing population of cocoa farmers, describing it as a threat to the long-term sustainability of the sector.

He emphasised the importance of attracting youth into agriculture through modernisation and innovation.

“We are working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture to modernize cocoa farming. By introducing advanced tools and equipment, we aim to make the sector more lucrative and appealing to young people,” he stated.

On climate change, he announced plans to prioritize irrigation systems on cocoa farms to mitigate the unpredictable rainfall patterns.

He urged farmers to join cooperatives, which would allow COCOBOD to implement irrigation projects more effectively when rolled out.

“We cannot implement irrigation systems for individual farmers, it’s costly, and access to water sources has been severely affected by illegal mining (galamsey). Cooperative farming is the way forward,” he explained.

He also disclosed that efforts to amend existing laws protecting cocoa trees will help to secure Ghana’s cocoa industry from environmental threats. He further said all relevant stakeholders are being involved in this painstaking process to achieve a more robust legal regime for crop protection.

“Cocoa farming is a source of generational wealth; we need laws to protect cocoa trees and stop the destruction caused by galamsey operators,” he said.

Dr. Abbey assured farmers of the timely supply of fertilisers and agrochemicals and called on all to support COCOBOD’s efforts at preventing the diversion of essential farming inputs.

“These inputs are procured with significant investment to reduce the burden on farmers. I will personally ensure that any misconduct or diversion is addressed, and if anybody is found complicit in diversion, they will be held accountable,” he said.

He urged all stakeholders within the cocoa value chain to unite and support his administration in revitalising and sustaining the sector.

Dr. Abbey was accompanied by members of COCOBOD management during the tour.

Ghana can eliminate malaria with right resources

Prof Fred Binka, Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences Prof Fred Binka, Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences

A former Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Prof Fred Binka, has stated that Ghana has the potential to eliminate malaria with the right resources and commitment.

According to Prof Binka, the main challenge facing Ghana’s malaria elimination efforts is the lack of financial resources to procure necessary commodities and implement the national malaria elimination plan.

“The main challenge facing Ghana’s malaria elimination efforts is the lack of financial resources to procure necessary commodities and implement the national malaria elimination plan,” he said.

He stressed the need to decentralise malaria interventions to the district levels, allowing for more targeted and effective efforts.

According to a Ghanaian Times report on April 25, 2025, Prof Binka highlighted the importance of community engagements and participation in Ghana’s malaria elimination efforts, urging individuals to contribute by sleeping under treated mosquito nets and seeking prompt treatment when symptoms arise.

Speaking on the theme of the 2025 World Malaria Day celebration, ‘Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, reignite,’ Prof Binka said it was a clarion call to refocus on malaria and commit resources to eliminate the disease.

“With the right resources and commitment, Ghana can join the ranks of countries that have successfully eliminated malaria,” he indicated.

His remarks come as Ghana pursues its National Malaria Elimination Strategic Plan 2024-2028, aiming to reduce malaria deaths by 100% and cases by 50% by 2028.

Ghana has made significant progress in reducing malaria deaths and parasite prevalence in recent years, and Prof Binka believes that with the right resources, the country can join the ranks of those that have successfully eliminated the disease.

Ghana has, meanwhile, made significant progress regarding malaria control over the years.

For instance, deaths due to malaria have reduced from 2,799 in 2012 to 151 in 2022. Malaria prevalence has also declined from 27.5% in 2011 to 8.6% in 2022 while confirmed malaria cases per 1000 population has reduced from 192 in 2019 to 159 per 1000 in 2020.

Despite these achievements, malaria remains a significant public health problem in Ghana

NPP, Other Political Parties To Protest Justice Torkornoo’s Suspension, May 5

0

Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

A coalition of political parties, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced plans to stage a nationwide demonstration on Monday, May 5, to protest the suspension of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as Chief Justice.

The parties say the protest is a stand in defense of Ghana’s constitutional order and the independence of the judiciary.

The decision was made during an emergency meeting held on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

Other participating parties include the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), Ghana Union Movement (GUM), among others.

President John Dramani Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo on Tuesday, April 22, after a prima facie case was established in relation to three separate petitions calling for her removal. The decision was made under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, following consultations with the Council of State. A five-member committee has since been formed to investigate the allegations.

In a joint statement issued on Friday, April 25, the political parties condemned the suspension, calling it a direct assault on judicial independence.

“The blatant disregard for the rule of law is not merely a political matter but rather an assault on the very soul of our democracy,” the statement said.

They further accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of a consistent pattern of judicial intimidation, referencing past events.

“The disturbing trend of judicial intimidation by the NDC is not new. The pattern is undeniable. A case in reference is the NDC failed plot in 2010 to remove Ghana’s first female Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood,” the statement asserted.

National Signals Bureau ex-boss Kwabena Adu Boahene and wife sue AG Dominic Ayine for defamation

2 minutes read

Kwabena Adu Boahene, a former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, and his wife have filed a defamation lawsuit against the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, over remarks made at a press conference on March 24, 2025.

In their suit, the couple argues that Dr Ayine falsely implicated them in corruption, embezzlement, and money laundering activities.

They claim the allegations, made publicly, have gravely damaged their reputation and subjected their family — particularly their children — to ridicule and emotional hardship, including being mocked by peers at school.

The complaint highlights that the damaging remarks were not only made verbally but were also published online and circulated extensively through social media platforms and news agencies, worsening the harm to their standing in society.

Kwabena Adu Boahene and his wife further assert that Dr Ayine, acting beyond his constitutional powers, made prejudicial statements that undermined their right to be presumed innocent.

They allege that the Attorney General’s comments were “reckless, lacked honesty”, and were made in collaboration with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), leading to their wrongful arrest and detention without due process.

Their statement of case outlines several grievances, including:

  • Branding them as criminals without judicial confirmation.

  • Spreading false claims about their travel activities and financial dealings.

  • Disclosing sensitive national security information.

  • Attempting to manipulate public perception and suggest punitive measures ahead of any court ruling.

  • The couple maintains that these actions were motivated by malice and constituted an abuse of public office intended to inflict lasting harm on their reputation.

Accordingly, they are seeking:

  • Substantial exemplary and punitive damages for the defamatory claims made at the press conference.

  • A perpetual injunction to restrain further publication of similar allegations.

  • Recovery of legal costs incurred in pursuing the action.

What government, BoG can do to curb fraudulent activities in Ghana

Dean of Accounting and Finance at UPSA, Prof. Isaac Boadi Dean of Accounting and Finance at UPSA, Prof. Isaac Boadi

Reports have indicated that banks in Ghana lose approximately GH¢271,233 to fraudulent activities daily, amounting to about GH¢8.25 million monthly and GH¢99 million annually.

This significant revenue loss, recorded in 2024, highlights the damaging impact of fraudulent activities on the financial system.

To combat this issue, Professor Isaac Boadi, Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA), has outlined steps the government and the Bank of Ghana can take to reduce Value at Risk (VaR) and fraud.

He recommended a multi-faceted approach, including investing in advanced fraud detection technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to identify suspicious transactions in real time.

According to him, the central bank must enforce stricter penalties for financial institutions that fail to implement robust anti-fraud measures, including sanctions and fines.

He also called for an expedited legal process for prosecuting fraud cases, arguing that swift justice would serve as a deterrent to potential offenders.

Furthermore, Professor Boadi emphasized the need for collaboration between the Bank of Ghana and the judiciary to establish specialized courts dedicated to financial crimes.

Regarding education, he urged the government to raise awareness about fraud and encourage whistleblowing.

He concluded that implementing these measures would help protect the economy from the harmful effects of financial fraud.

NACOC Seizes 73 Cocaine Slabs Bound For Netherlands

0

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has intercepted 73 slabs of suspected cocaine at Swiss Port in Tema, Greater Accra Region, during a routine inspection on Wednesday, April 23, 2024.

The illicit cargo, weighing approximately 89.74 kilograms, was concealed within a consignment set for export to the Netherlands. Authorities said the seizure forms part of heightened efforts to clamp down on drug trafficking through the country’s ports.

Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the attempted shipment and are currently in NACOC custody. Investigations are underway to trace the source, ownership, and intended recipients of the narcotics.

This latest bust follows a major interception on March 4, 2025, when the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), working with NACOC, uncovered a massive 3.3-tonne consignment of cocaine hidden in a tipper truck traveling from Takoradi to Accra.

The operation at Pedu Junction in Cape Coast led to the discovery of 143 sacks containing 2,974 kilograms of cocaine buried under sand. Two suspects, Isaac Quaicoe and Kenneth Cobbinah, were arrested during the operation.

Further intelligence-led investigations on March 8, 2025 led to a raid on a residence where an additional 13 sacks and one bag containing 345.07 kilograms of suspected cocaine were seized.

Laboratory tests confirmed the total quantity—3,319.68 kilograms—as high-purity cocaine, ranging between 50% and 70% purity. The consignment, estimated to be worth over $350 million, is believed to have entered the country through fishing vessels.

President Mahama has dealt with us badly – Tema Traditional Council

0

By Laudia Sawer

Tema, April 25, GNA – The Tema Traditional Council (TTC) has expressed disappointment with President John Dramani Mahama’s nomination of Ms Ebi Bright as the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive.

Ms Bright, a three-time National Democratic Congress (NDC) Tema Central parliamentary candidate, was nominated as the first female MCE of the Tema Metro despite several calls on the president by the council requesting a native to occupy the position.

Reacting to the announcement of the nomination, the council indicated that they were displeased with the manner the NDC has dealt with the natives of Tema.

Nii Amarh Soumponu II, the Tema Shipi and Stool Secretary, addressing the media, stressed that even though the Tema paramountcy has three assemblies within its jurisdiction, they only asked for the Tema Metro seat to be reserved for indigenes, just as it had been done in other coastal areas from Keta in the Volta Region to Axim in the Western Region.

Nii Soumponu stated that, “All these places have indigenes appointed to the position, so we are unable to come to terms with how come Tema has been secluded from having one of its own assigned to this position. We are beginning to wonder whether we are being treated as foreigners on our land. Tema belongs to the people of Tema, so, if a situation arises where our neighbouring or sister towns are given such positions, and the government decides otherwise for us.”

He stated that it was unfortunate that they were being turned into slaves on their land, as, according to him, their farmlands were used for industries, depriving them of their livelihood, and now they were being denied some respect by the government.

The council debunked the public assertion that they were fighting the non-indigenous, emphasising that “We are not fighting non-indigenous if that is so; we won’t have even

accepted them as residents of Tema in the first place, but we want everyone to know that we are being treated unfairly on our own land.”

They added that, “We can’t fight the government; we won’t embark on violent activities, but we want them to understand that we are not happy with the way they have treated us.”

KKMA holds community needs assessment for residents

0

By Mercy Arthur

Sebrepor, April 25, GNA – The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA) has conducted a Community Needs Assessment engagement for residents of Kakasunka, Mlitsakpo, Sebrepor, Bethlehem, and Gbetsile, collectively under the KAMSBEG Zonal Council.

The engagement formed part of the preparatory activities towards the formulation of the 2026 to 2029 Medium-Term Development Plan (MTDP), in line with the National Development Planning (System) Act, 1994 (Act 480).

The MTDP is also designed to ensure that the Assembly’s local development priorities were aligned with the Medium-Term National Development Policy Framework (MTNDPF), as well as national and global development goals such as Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs.)

Madam Zubaida Damago, the Senior Development Planning Officer at the KKMA, addressing the participants, emphasised that the Community Needs Assessment was a critical step in the planning process and it provides a participatory platform for residents to voice their developmental challenges, aspirations, and priorities.

Madam Damago stated that “this engagement empowers community members to collectively identify and analyse the key issues affecting their localities because sustainable development is a shared journey, not a top-down directive”.

She said some recurring concerns across the assembly’s outreach sessions included poor road infrastructure, inadequate access to quality healthcare, and educational challenges.

Madam Damago urged community members to take ownership of the planning process by actively participating in identifying and prioritising their needs, indicating

that “when residents become agents of change instead of passive observers, we are more likely to achieve inclusive and responsive development outcomes.”

She said citizen engagement enhances participatory governance, strengthened transparency, and ensured that planning outcomes were both people-centered and evidence-driven.

“Our goal is to ensure the developmental priorities set would truly reflect the needs, aspirations and challenges of the residents,” she reiterated.

Reflecting on the performance of the 2022–2025 MTDP, she said 342 out of 357, planned interventions had been implemented as of the first quarter of 2025, covering key development dimensions such as economic and social development, environment, infrastructure, human settlements, governance, corruption, public accountability, emergency planning and COVID-19 response, implementation, as well as coordination, monitoring, and evaluation.

Notable achievements included the construction of a CHPS compound at Mlitsakpo and the completion of a dormitory block at the Kpone Senior High School.

Madam Damago further revealed that proposals from the community such as the construction of additional school infrastructure, improvements in drainage and roads, and enhanced healthcare and security services would be factored into the upcoming 2026-2029 Medium-Term Development Plan.

The session was well attended by a broad section of stakeholders, including traditional leaders, assembly members, religious leaders, representatives from youth and women’s groups, persons with disabilities, local business owners, school authorities, civil society organisations, and officials from decentralised departments.

Their contributions provided a holistic perspective on community development needs and reaffirmed the shared commitment to collaborative planning and inclusive governance.

Ghanaian delegation engages investor community at IMF-World Bank spring meetings

0

The Ghanaian delegation, led by Minister for Finance Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, held a high-level engagement with global investors on the sidelines of the ongoing International Monetary Fund-World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C.

The event, hosted by the international law firm Hogan Lovells, brought together key stakeholders to deliberate on Ghana’s economic recovery strategy, progress under the IMF programme, and future investment prospects.

The delegation included the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, and Seth Terkper, Presidential Advisor on the Economy. Together, they presented a unified front on Ghana’s efforts to reset its economy and restore market confidence following years of macroeconomic challenges and sovereign debt restructuring.

In his keynote presentation, Dr. Forson emphasised the government’s commitment to prudent fiscal management, supported by robust reforms in public financial management, tax administration, and expenditure controls.

“The 2025 Budget marks a turning point,” he noted. “It is about restoring fiscal responsibility, ensuring debt sustainability, and fostering inclusive growth through job creation and social protection.”

Dr Asiama highlighted the central bank’s inflation-targeting policy and monetary tightening stance, which have contributed to currency stability and improving reserve buffers.

He reaffirmed the Bank of Ghana’s resolve to maintain price stability while supporting financial system resilience and growth.

The presentation showcased Ghana’s macroeconomic progress, including a rebound in GDP growth to 5.7% in 2024, declining inflation, and a debt-to-GDP ratio on track to fall below 55% by end-2025. The team also spotlighted key structural reforms, such as the operationalization of the single treasury account for the energy sector and amendments to the PFM and Procurement Acts to curb arrears and inefficiencies.

Investors were updated on the status of Ghana’s debt restructuring, with over 93% of eligible public debt already restructured. This milestone, the delegation noted, positions Ghana for positive credit rating reviews and eventual reentry into the international capital markets.

Mr. Terkper underscored the importance of credibility and transparency in rebuilding trust with the investor community.

“Our actions are deliberate and structured to align with long-term economic transformation. Ghana is open for business,” he said.

The investor dialogue provided an opportunity for Ghana to reinforce its reform agenda and assure creditors of its commitment to sustained macroeconomic stability and growth.

Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has issued a directive requiring that all newly filed cases and applications in the country’s superior courts be submitted to his office.

This initiative aims to streamline court processes and enhance efficiency.

Effective April 23, 2025, and communicated through the Deputy Judicial Secretary, the directive applies to registrars of the Supreme Court, High Courts, and Courts of Appeal.

The Chief Justice has mandated that all new cases, applications, and requests for hearing dates be submitted to a centralised unit for assignment and scheduling.

The goal of this move is to establish a more organized and transparent system for case allocation and hearing date management.

According to the memo, all fresh filings, whether applications or cases, must be submitted to the Acting Chief Justice to facilitate court assignments or to empanel judges when multiple courts are involved.

By centralising this process, the judiciary aims to reduce delays and promote fairness in the assignment of cases to judges.

This directive is expected to improve case management, decrease backlogs, and enhance accountability within the judicial system.

It also places the scheduling of hearing dates under the direct supervision of the Chief Justice.

Registrars across all courts have been instructed to comply with the new procedure, which will be closely monitored for effectiveness.

The memo emphasises that this approach replaces all previous guidelines regarding court assignments and hearing schedules and will remain in effect until further notice.

All court registrars nationwide are required to strictly adhere to this new order.

The management of the Kumasi South Regional Hospital is urging the government to fast-track the commissioning of the Sewua Hospital to help address the acute congestion and limited resources it is currently grappling with.

This call was made during a working visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health to the Kumasi South and Komfo Anokye Teaching hospitals.

The visit forms part of Parliament’s efforts to gain firsthand insight into healthcare delivery across the country by directly engaging health professionals and assessing service challenges on the ground.

In a presentation to the committee, Dr Kwame Ofori Boadu, Medical Director of Kumasi South Hospital, underscored the critical need to expand the hospital’s infrastructure.

He expressed concern over the takeover of the hospital’s frontage by traders, a situation that persists despite interventions from local assemblies.

Dr Boadu called for the immediate operationalisation of Sewua Hospital, which has been entangled in administrative delays, noting that it would significantly ease pressure on Kumasi South and improve service delivery for patients.

Responding to the hospital’s concerns, Dr Thomas Winsum Anabah, head of the delegation and MP for Garu, assured management of the committee’s support.

He promised to reflect their concerns in the committee’s report to Parliament and to advocate for the necessary interventions.

The committee’s visit is part of a four-day national tour, which began on Tuesday, April 22, and continues through Friday, April 25, 2025.

The objective is to evaluate the state of healthcare infrastructure, uncover critical challenges, and propose practical solutions to enhance healthcare delivery nationwide.

Participating in this leg of the tour, known as Team 3, are Members of Parliament tasked with visiting selected health institutions.

These include Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, Member of Parliament for Keta; Alexander Akwasi Acquah, MP for Akim Oda; Thomas Winsum Anabah, MP for Garu; Arhin Prince Ebenezer, MP for Mfantseman; Hottordze Roosevelt Alexander, MP for Central Tongu; and Mohammed Sherrif Abdul-Khaliq, MP for Nanton.

Their scheduled stops include the Kumasi Regional Hospital, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, the Koforidua Regional Hospital, the Ho Regional Hospital, the Ho Teaching Hospital, and the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.
