The Acting Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Dr Adam Bonaa is leading Ghana’s delegation to the Twelfth Meeting of the United Nations Working Group on Firearms (WGF), which opened today, April 28, 2025, in Vienna, Austria.

The high-level meeting, convened under the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, brings together member states and international stakeholders to advance efforts against the illicit manufacture and trafficking of firearms. This year’s agenda focuses on the role of the UN Firearms Protocol in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and criminal justice responses.

In a strong show of Ghana’s commitment to global peace and security, the Acting Executive Secretary during a key session, delivered a presentation titled “The Contribution of the Firearms Protocol to Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding Efforts: The Ghana Experience.”

His presentation highlighted Ghana’s national strategies for firearms control, including the commission’s work on weapons marking, arms stockpile management, weapons destruction, the legal framework on firearms, and public education campaigns.

He made a compelling case for integrating the Firearms Protocol into regional peace and security frameworks and called for increased cross-border collaboration to tackle the root causes of firearms trafficking.

Speaking ahead of the session, Dr Adam Bonaa emphasized the importance of aligning local actions with global standards.

“Small arms proliferation is not just a national security issue—it is a regional and international concern that threatens development, destabilizes communities, and prolongs conflicts. Ghana remains firmly committed to the full implementation of the Firearms Protocol and to sharing our experiences in support of international cooperation,” he stated.

The two-day meeting will also review criminal justice responses to firearms-related offenses and assess progress in implementing the Firearms Protocol across member states.

Ghana’s participation underscores its leadership role in West Africa on issues of arms control, peacebuilding, and organized crime prevention.

The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons continues to engage actively in global forums to promote a safer, more secure, and peaceful society through effective arms regulation and international cooperation.

Our goal is to create 40,000 Ghanaian youth-owned businesses in 4 years – Mahama on ‘Adwumawura’

0

President John Mahama has restated his government’s commitment to developing the Entrepreneural abilities of Ghanaian youth.

He said the launch of ‘Adwumawura’, an Akan word which means “the job owner” is testament to this commitment.

“The Adwumawura programe, which we are launching today, is a flagship fulfilment of that promise I made in the campaign of 2024. The adwumawura programme is not a mere policy initiative. It is a declaration of faith in the extraordinary potential of the Ghanaian youth. It is our commitment to nurturing their ambitions and translating their ideas into thriving enterprises that will drive our nation’s progress. The adwumawura programme seeks to stimulate youth employment, entrepreneurship and innovation across key sectors of our economy,” he declared at the Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumasi on April 28.

According to him, “Our goal is to create at least 10,000 Ghanaian youth-owned businesses every year over a 4-year period.”

He used the launch to throw light of the relevance of the programme to prospective and existing youth entrepreneurs.

“This initiative will provide business development training. So, if you have your business or you want to establish a business, you will be trained on how to a manage a business. A lot of businesses fail because the promoters of the businesses do not understand how to manage a business,” he said.

President Mahama added that, “The programme will also provide access to funding. Most young people have good ideas, but they don’t have access to capital. The programme will provide coaching and mentorship. And so, for some of those you saw on the documentary, these are young entrepreneurs who have already established their businesses and so when we help you under the adwumawura programme, we will assign you to one of these entrepreneurs who have experience in running a business to guide and support you so your business can also grow.”

“We will also provide technological support and access to equipment and machinery. Somebody establishes a business, but he needs some machinery to enhance his productivity, and he cannot afford the equipment. Adwumawura is there for you. To help you buy your equipment. Adwumawura will also help with market access and facilitation. You will get support in how to market your product so that you can grow your business. And we will also have 367 days a year of comprehensive business advisory services. Once you set up your business it does not mean Adwumawura will leave you like that. If you have any problem, you can always come back and describe what your problem is, and they will support you to go forward,” the President explained further.

He assured that, “These businesses will be selected, if your business is not selected this year, it may be selected next year,”

Kumasi High Court dismisses NDC petition against 3 parliamentary seats in A/R

0

A Kumasi High Court has dismissed a petition by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) challenging the results of three parliamentary seats in the Ashanti Region in the 2024 election, ruling in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The NDC filed petitions contesting the outcomes in the parliamentary elections in the Ahafo Ano South-West, Obuasi East, and Ahafo Ano North constituencies, claiming the party’s candidates had rightfully won the seats despite official recounts and the subsequent swearing-in of the NPP Members of Parliament.

Counsel for the NPP MPs, Clement Opoku Gyamfi argued that the NDC failed to comply with procedural requirements, specifically not applying for the determination of security for costs within 21 days after the election results were gazetted, as required by law.

“Two High Court judges, one from High Court 2 and another from High Court 6, have unanimously ruled that the NDC petition is invalid and dismissed it.” He said the NDC has no case and has ordered the three MPs to remain in Parliament to represent their constituencies.

Cocaine Coast Nomenclature –

0

The recent cocaine bust at the Kotoka International Airport is a matter of concern.

It paints a picture of a preference for Ghana by drug pushers, an impetus which is far from leaving the country. It can be equated to the mad rush for our forests by illegal miners in furtherance of an unwritten pact since January 7, 2025.

There is something about the country today they find working in their favour. We do not know it and can only conjecture.

It could be about cracks in the security architecture which works to their advantage or something else.

We cannot shower plaudits on government because under their watch the country is being gradually turned into a hub for hard drugs, a West African Columbia.

Previous hauls under the current administration and the matters that have arisen out of them gave us an unenviable appreciation on the opioid chart.

Whatever happened to the brouhaha over the cocaine haul at Sapeiman near Amasaman in Accra?

Have the government agencies and propaganda machinery managed to hush the story through arrests and the introduction of headlining subjects to divert attention from it?

Be it as it may, the difference between the Mahama government and its predecessor in terms of managing the opioid pandemic is easy to determine.

Under the previous administration, there was a zero tolerance for the drug trade busts occasionally being recorded.

Today, the picture is different and the efforts at challenging the authenticity of the busts by the Government Spokesperson heightens the suspicion of observers.

The embarrassment associated with one’s country earning the unenviable label of cocaine hub is too much to be ignored.

So far, we as citizens have not been convinced that the cocaine cases and the allegations associated with them have been sufficiently managed.

The AirMed brouhaha and the unconvincing narratives such as the emergency landing gear fault by the Government Spokesperson left a bitter taste in our palates. Some defences such as those made to dwarf Rev. Ntim Fordjour’s AirMed revelations, are insulting. Did he claim the aircraft suffered a puncture in the air? Stratosphere potholes?

We do not expect anything to come out of our calls for independent auditing of the AirMed landings and the power outage at the airport at the time.

Where are the exhibits, and who is the said Alhaji claimed to be behind the Sapeiman haul?

Hiding behind the title Alhaji might have provided a temporary escape route for agencies involved in the smuggling of the opioid stuff into the country, and perhaps repacking same for the European or US markets.

Were some people knee-deep in the drug smuggling business and waiting in the wings to launch the trade big time after the elections which saw a change in government?

We can bet this is not going to be the last bust. Many would be reported and while some could be pursued to the court, many might just end up like the Sapeiman and the former parliamentary candidate’s case. Until the next bust is made, so long folks.

Assemblyman calls for reassignment of Zoomlion contract portions to assembly members

0

By Laudia Sawer

Tema, April 28, GNA – Mr Joshua Teye Agudah, the Assemblyman for the Dade Agbo electoral area in the Tema Metropolis, has called on the government to reassign portions of the Zoomlion sanitation contract to assembly members.

The contract between the government of Ghana and Zoomlion Ghana Limited had recently come under scrutiny, generating public discussion.

Issues with the contracts that had been criticised covers alleged overpayments and unexecuted ones, as well as discrepancies in workers’ compensation.

Mr Agudah, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), stated that Mr Malik Basintale, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), should reassign some portions of the contracts to the metropolitan, municipal, and district chief executives (MMDCEs) to be given to assembly members and unit committee members.

He said this in reaction to Mr Basintale’s declaration not to renew the existing sanitation contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, if the current wage structure for sanitation workers remained unchanged, criticising the current arrangement, where workers received GH¢250 monthly, while Zoomlion retained GH¢600 as management fees from the GH¢850 allocated per worker, describing it as exploitative and unjust.

Mr Agudah said portions such as street cleaning and drainage desilting could be handled by the assembly members, who would engage community members to take up such works in their electoral area.

“The majority of the assembly members cannot work under any company due to the pressure and problems in our communities, and we are less empowered in the area of sanitation; this will do us good and the country as a whole.”

He added that they could supervise the work and ensure fair pay because they are community members and sanitation agents.

NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to launch a transformative initiative, the Patriotic Institute, in May 2025, as part of efforts to deepen ideological education, build capacity among its members, and enhance its contribution to national development.

This was revealed by the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, during his recent nationwide tour to engage party stakeholders and grassroots supporters.

According to Mr Kodua, the establishment of the Patriotic Institute marks a major step towards institutionalising political education within the party and empowering members with knowledge, leadership skills, and a renewed sense of patriotism.

“The Patriotic Institute will be the intellectual and ideological engine of the NPP,” Mr Kodua said.

“It will focus on leadership training, research, and the promotion of the party’s foundational principles — freedom, democracy, development, and service to Ghana.”

He emphasised that the Institute will not only serve the needs of the party but will also be open to nurturing young leaders, public servants, and citizens committed to democratic values and national progress.

“This is about grooming a generation that understands governance, patriotism, and the spirit of service to country,” Kodua added.

The NPP’s Patriotic Institute is expected to offer a range of activities, including seminars, public lectures, political education courses, research publications, and policy analysis. It will also serve as a platform for engaging scholars, political leaders, and development practitioners from Ghana and abroad.

Party officials have described the upcoming launch as “timely and strategic” as the NPP continues to reposition itself for the future, focusing not only on winning elections but also on shaping the ideological and developmental discourse of Ghana.

As the NPP prepares for this historic launch in May, expectations are high among party members and political watchers alike, with many seeing the Patriotic Institute as a bold investment in the intellectual future of the party and the nation.

More details about the location, programmes, and leadership of the Patriotic Institute are expected to be unveiled at the launch event.

I married my wife with just GH¢600, Malt, and Fanta – Rev Gideon Danso reveals

Reverend Gideon Danso and his wife, Gina Nipah Reverend Gideon Danso and his wife, Gina Nipah

Lead Pastor of Empowerment Worship Centre, Reverend Gideon Danso, has revealed that he married his fiancée, Gina Nipah, in a simple ceremony that cost only GH¢600.

The announcement was made during a church sermon on April 27, 2025, barely a week after the pastor introduced his fiancée to the congregation. The couple tied the knot in a private event without elaborate preparations.

In a video making waves on social media, Apostle Reverend Ben Doku, founder of Overcomers Outreach Family Church, formally introduced the newlyweds to the Empowerment Worship Centre congregation in a Facebook video.

“I came here to announce to you that in the course of the week, something happened. What happened is that your lead pastor, Prophet Gideon Danso, got married. I’m here to announce to you that God has given you a mother,” Apostle Doku declared.

As the couple stepped forward, the congregation erupted in cheers to celebrate their pastor’s new marital status.

In response, Pastor Danso shared details of their modest wedding, emphasising that the ceremony was intentionally simple.

“Whether you believe it or not, it cost me GH¢600. There was no makeup, no suit, no veil. I called Reverend, he came, we signed, we took vows, he blessed us, we served Malt and Fanta. No food, no nothing. I don’t owe anybody,” he said.

He praised his wife for her understanding and support, stating that her willingness to forgo a lavish wedding allowed them to prioritise their future.

“I want to thank God for Gina. This girl is special. She has saved my pocket to build a church and a house for us to live in. I’m praying that at Stand in the Gap on Sunday, I will have prepared food for everybody to eat and worship the Lord. But between now and then, I’m a married man with GH¢600. It wasn’t planned; it happened the way God wanted it. The Lord has done it. It is finished,” he concluded.

Court of Appeal to deliver ruling on Ataa Ayi accomplice’s case on June 5

0

An alleged accomplice of notorious armed robber Ataa Ayi, Yaw Asante Agyeman, is set to appear in court on June 5, 2025, to hear the judgement on his case.

According to a report by MyNewsGh.com on April 28, 2025 the Court of Appeal has set June 5, 2025 to deliver its ruling.

The judgement will determine whether Agyeman’s conviction will stand or if his sentence will be reduced.

Yaw Asante Agyeman, a mechanic, was sentenced to 35 years in prison in December 2002 for conspiracy to commit robbery.

He has since served over 20 years of his sentence.

Bernard Kwabena Shaw, counsel for Agyeman, argued that there was no evidence to support the prosecution’s claims linking his client to the robberies committed by Ataa Ayi.

The court moved to deliver its judgement on the appeal after an eight-year legal battle on Monday, April 28, 2025.

“The link to Ataa Ayi was that most of the motorbikes used by the robbers in Ataa Ayi’s network were repaired in his [Agyeman’s] workshop. So, when the swoop was carried out on Ataa Ayi, for some reason, because they found Agyeman’s name on their phones, they charged him along with the others for conspiracy to commit robbery. He had no legal counsel and was sentenced to 35 years with the others,” Shaw told journalists.

According to multiple media reports, Shaw took up the case after the then-Governor of Nsawam Prison brought Yaw Asante Agyeman’s situation to his attention.

China remains committed to fair trade and peaceful diplomacy – Ambassador Tong

0

Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa

China remains committed to fostering peaceful international relations and a fair, rules-based global trading system, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Tong Defa has said.

Speaking at a media engagement in Accra, Ambassador Tong emphasised the importance of diplomatic cooperation, mutual respect and economic inclusiveness while condemning rising global protectionism and unilateral tariff policies, particularly those of the United States.

He stressed the need for dialogue and mutual respect in international relations, warning against the rise of unilateralism and economic coercion.

The Ambassador described the tariff hikes as violations of the global multilateral trading system and said that such actions threaten the foundations of international cooperation and pose risks to global economic stability.

According to him, the new U.S. tariff policies target over 180 countries and regions, including vulnerable Least Developed Countries (LDCs) with some Chinese products facing tariffs as high as 145% – and in certain cases, like solar panels, over 3,000%.

“This severely infringes upon the legitimate rights and interests of all countries, violates World Trade Organisation rules, undermines the rule-based multilateral trading system and disrupts the global economic order.

“The Chinese government strongly condemns and resolutely opposes such moves. By taking such actions, the United States defies fundamental laws of economics and market principles, disregards the balanced outcomes achieved through multilateral trade negotiations…and weaponises tariffs to exert maximum pressure for selfish interests. This is a typical act of unilateralism, protectionism and economic bullying,” he stated.

Multilateralism

He however called for multilateralism and collaboration in shaping the future of international relations.

“There are no winners in tariff wars. International affairs should be addressed through consultation, not coercion. The future of the world must be decided collectively,” he stressed.

He urged countries to uphold the principles of fairness, justice and mutual respect in global governance and to stand on the right side of history.

“As the second-largest economy and second-largest market for consumer goods, China is committed to opening ever-wider to the world, no matter how the international situation changes. We will continue to advance high-standard opening-up.

“We will steadily expand institutional opening-up in rules, regulations, management, and standards. We will implement high-standard policies for trading, investment, liberalisation and facilitation. We will foster a first-class market-oriented, law-based and internationalised business environment. We will share our development opportunities with the world to achieve mutual benefits,” he stated.

Support for African Trade and Development

Ambassador Tong also spoke of China’s continued support for African development, particularly in the area of trade.

He cited the country’s decision to grant 100% zero-tariff treatment to all LDCs with diplomatic ties to China – including 33 African nations. This, he noted, makes China the first G20 member to offer such comprehensive preferential access.

In addition, China has signed bilateral investment treaties with 34 African countries and double taxation avoidance agreements with 21 of them.

“China is not only opening up to the world but also sharing development opportunities, especially with our African brothers and sisters,” he said.

Neighbour diplomacy

Ambassador Tong also took the opportunity to highlight key takeaways from the recently held Central Conference on Work Related to Chinese Neighbouring Countries, in China.

That conference emphasised the critical role of neighbouring countries to development, prosperity and security… and called for the building of a “community with a shared future”.

Ambassador Tong explained that China will deepen cooperation in various fields – including economic integration, infrastructure, security and cultural exchange – while maintaining the principles of amity, sincerity, mutual benefit and inclusiveness.

He also pointed out that, following the conference, President Xi Jinping embarked on successful visits to Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia, signalling the country’s resolve in strengthening regional ties.

Concerned referees, match commissioners boycott GPL over 21-weeks of unpaid salaries

Some concerned referees and match commissioners have announced a boycott of the Ghana Premier League following 21 weeks of unpaid salaries.

In a letter addressed to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and dated April 27, 2025, the aggrieved group stated that they would not resume their duties until the outstanding payments were made.

They warned that the situation could expose officials to compromise if they were offered large financial incentives during the course of their duties.

“We write, anonymously, to notify you of our decision to boycott the remainder of the Ghana Premier League games with immediate effect. This difficult decision has been taken unequivocally due to our unpaid allowances for 21 weeks, and we do not intend to return until all our outstanding debts are paid.

“We wish to remind the authorities that leaving referees’ and match commissioners’ allowances unpaid is ample ground for inducement, which we all vehemently abhor and wish to avoid at all costs to maintain the integrity of the game,” portions of the statement read.

The concerned referees and match commissioners urged the authorities to settle the arrears as soon as possible to avoid disrupting the Ghana Premier League.

“It is our considered view, and we hope that you will treat this notice with all the urgency and seriousness it deserves. We wish to conclude with an 18th-century adage that lucidly states, ‘An empty sack cannot stand upright,'” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the GFA has yet to respond to the statement and address the concerns raised.

Student fined Shs100,000 for impersonating businessman Ham

An 18-year-old senior three student has been fined Shs100,000 after pleading guilty to charges of impersonating Kampala businessman, Hamis Kiggundu, popularly known as Ham.

Ruth Nandase on Monday, April 28, 2025, pleaded guilty to charges of impersonation and cheating after signing a plea bargain agreement with the state and Ham’s representatives in court, for a lesser punishment at the Buganda Road Court presided over by the Chief Magistrate, Mr Ronald Kayizzi.

The state prosecutor, Mr Ivan Kyazze, told the magistrate that Nandase agreed to a fine of Shs100,000 as the sentence for her crimes after her father agreed to track down the prime suspect with whom she conspired.

Additionally, the state said her level of participation indicated that she did not mastermind the crime.

“She was being used and we have had a discussion with the father who has pledged to help track the prime suspect,” Mr Kyazze told the court.

When asked about the fine, the spokesperson of Hamis Enterprise, Mr Karim Serugo, also told the court they trust Nandase’s father to track down the prime suspect since he is a leader in his area.

Nandase had been charged alongside a 33-year-old builder, Babu Maniharah and a 25-year-old hawkwe, Frank Sempa. Maniharah and Sempa were further remanded until May 14 when they are expected to return to court.

It’s alleged that between 2023 and February 2024, Sempa, Maniharah, Nandase, and others still at large, falsely presented themselves as Hamis Kiggundu of Hamis Enterprises Ltd, with the intent to defraud people in various locations within Kampala’s Central Division.

The prosecution further alleges that on January 29, 2025, Sempa fraudulently obtained Shs50,000 from one Shafic Kawooya by claiming to be Ham and promising to secure a loan for him.

Court documents reveal that Mr Serugo also encountered a person posing as Ham on TikTok, claiming to help those in need two weeks ago.

“Serugo began chatting with the impersonator, who asked if he needed money. When Serugo said yes, the impersonator requested a deposit for “security” and provided a manager’s contact number, which initially did not go through,” reads in part the court documents.

When the number eventually connected, it became clear that the impersonator was targeting many Ugandans under the guise of being Kiggundu.

After realizing that he had been conned, Serugo reported the case to police, leading to the arrest of Nandase and Maniharah through phone tracking.

Forgive our mistakes, we’ll do better in future

0

Former Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has acknowledged mistakes made by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration and made a heartfelt appeal to Ghanaians for forgiveness, while promising improved leadership and governance in the future.

This follows criticisms suggesting that Dr. Bawumia was attempting to distance himself from his government’s failings.

Speaking during the party’s “Thank You Tour” in Goaso, Dr. Bawumia used the platform not only to express gratitude but also to reflect candidly on the shortcomings of the administration in which he served.

He struck a humble tone, stating, “We recognise that we have made mistakes along the way, and we sincerely ask for your forgiveness.”

Describing the tour as more than a celebration, he stressed that it was a moment for “sober reflection,” emphasizing that the voices of Ghanaians had been heard.

“This Thank You Tour is not just a celebration; it is also a moment of sober reflection,” he said, adding “We have listened to your concerns, and we are determined to chart a new path forward together.”

Departing from the usual political blame game, Dr. Bawumia pledged to take responsibility rather than make excuses for the government’s lapses.

“We will not make excuses. Instead, we pledge to correct our lapses and to deliver even better governance in the future.”

He concluded with a call for unity and a renewed commitment to national development:

“Let us move forward together with a renewed sense of purpose. We owe it to every Ghanaian to serve with humility, dedication, and an unrelenting commitment to progress.”

Francis Sosu honours NDC branch executives, launches GHc1m welfare fund

0

The Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, on Sunday, April 27, led a grand ceremony to honour the hardworking branch executives who played a key role in securing a resounding parliamentary and presidential victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the constituency during the 2024 general elections.

The colourful event, held at the Astro Turf in Madina, brought together 3,889 party executives, including Ward Coordinators, Secretaries, Organisers, Zonal Leaders, Assembly Members, and Unit Committee Members from all 321 polling stations in the constituency.

The celebration served as a platform to express appreciation for their dedication, loyalty, and tireless work during the campaigns.

In his speech, Mr. Sosu outlined a range of awards and incentives designed to reward excellence and encourage sustained commitment at the grassroots.

“For example, branches that recorded the highest votes will receive special awards,” he announced.

Prizes for outstanding performers included motorcycles, brand-new laptops, tricycles, foreign trips, scholarships, job placement opportunities, and cash prizes.

“We are not just giving out awards; we are also recognizing the sacrifices made by our grassroots soldiers. Our politics is not going to be transactional — it will be transformational,” Sosu emphasised, reinforcing his vision for a new style of leadership within the NDC.

A major highlight of the ceremony was the launch of a GHC 1,000,000.00 Welfare Scheme for all branch executives under the “Madina Potwesi” initiative.

The fund, with an initial deposit of GHC 100,000, is aimed at providing medical and emergency support for grassroots members who continue to sacrifice for the party.

The MP appealed to well-wishers and philanthropists to contribute generously to the fund to ensure its sustainability.

Mr. Sosu also shared emotional moments recalling the tragic loss of dedicated campaigners during the election period, paying tribute to Nathaniel and others who made the ultimate sacrifice.

GTA, Bus Stop Boyz lead clean-up exercise at Nationalism Park

0

Accra, April 28, GNA – The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), in collaboration with the youth-led volunteer group Bus Stop Boyz, held a massive clean-up exercise at Nationalism Park in Accra.

The event marked a strong commitment to environmental responsibility and tourism sustainability in Ghana’s capital.

The clean-up exercise was led by Mr Gilbert Abeiku Santana Aggrey, Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, and was joined by Mr Jones Aruna Nelson, Director of Corporate Affairs, and Nana Agyenim Boateng, Director of Administration at the GTA.

Together with Bus Stop Boyz and local volunteers, the team undertook a rigorous cleaning effort to restore the beauty and cleanliness of one of Ghana’s symbolic national spaces.

To show appreciation for their civic dedication, GTA commended the patriotic drive of the Bus Stop Boyz to keep Ghana’s public spaces clean and vibrant.

Speaking to the media after the clean-up exercise, Mr Aggrey emphasised the importance of inter-agency collaboration to maintain and preserve Ghana’s heritage landmarks.

“We call on the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly and all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to prioritise the cleanliness, safety, and eco-friendliness of our historic structures.

“Under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda, the GTA is fully committed to protecting, marketing, and maintaining all tourism sites to offer a world-class experience to every visitor,” he said.

Established under Act 817 2011 and further strengthened by Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2393 in 2019, the Ghana Tourism Authority is mandated to register, license, and promote tourist sites and attractions across the country.

While ownership and direct management of many sites fall under entities such as the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB), the Forestry Commission, traditional authorities, and private stakeholders, GTA continues to play a critical leadership role in shaping and marketing Ghana’s tourism experience.

“Tourism is a collective responsibility. We urge government agencies, the private sector, traditional leaders, civil society, and local communities to join hands in safeguarding our

natural and cultural heritage for the benefit of present and future generations,” Mr Aggrey added.

The clean-up campaign was part of GTA’s broader vision to promote responsible tourism, foster environmental consciousness, and revitalise tourism infrastructure, ensuring Ghana’s attractions remain accessible, attractive, and globally competitive.

Akufo-Addo prioritised loyalty over competence – Asah-Asante

0

Dr Kwame Asah-Asante is a political scientist Dr Kwame Asah-Asante is a political scientist

Political scientist Dr Kwame Asah-Asante has backed claims that former President Akufo-Addo’s refusal to reshuffle his ministers significantly contributed to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections.

His comments follow recent remarks by the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who attributed the party’s electoral loss to several factors, including arrogance of power, failure to reshuffle government officials, the introduction of the E-Levy, and the controversial domestic debt exchange programme (haircut policy).

Dr Bawumia made these comments during the launch of his nationwide “Thank You” tour at the auditorium of Takoradi Technical University, highlighting the struggles Ghanaians faced amid an IMF-backed debt restructuring programme.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Dr Asah-Asante underscored that the failure to reshuffle non-performing ministers was a critical misstep.

According to him, former President Akufo-Addo prioritised loyalty over competence, which ultimately hurt the administration’s performance and contributed to public dissatisfaction.

He explained that ministerial reshuffles serve important purposes such as injecting fresh energy into governance, refocusing policies, and ensuring regional balance.

He said, “They talked about the issue of the fact that he did not reshuffle the government and all that. It tells you about what? The way Nana Akufo-Addo was not prepared to change those who were non-performing ministers. If you read literature on reshuffling of ministers, we bring them for so many reasons. One of the reasons that we bring people in to come and replace others is to inject fresh energy into the system. Sometimes you bring people in the focus of a policy and the direction of a policy.”

“Sometimes you bring them in just to, you know, have a regional balance and whatnot. And in all these things, competence is critical. It’s not about loyalty. Nana unfortunately, sacrificed competence and loyalty. That doesn’t work because the person can be loyal to you, but you know him to be an incompetent person. What can he do? He can’t do anything and that will translate into the results that you want. You want results because governance is nothing but about what? About records. So what results do you want to have in terms of what you have done? So your records, where would that be? So that is why these are some of the things that cause the difficulties.”

Dr Asah-Asante further noted that beyond national issues, constituency-specific challenges also impact electoral outcomes.

He expressed interest in seeing if research reports had captured these localized concerns, as they are often decisive factors for voters.

“I’m happy, they’ve done research to point them out. I have not seen the report, but I want to see whether there are constituency-specific issues. Because in voters, when they are voting, apart from national ones that they look out for, what about constituency-specific issues? Because various constituencies have their own problems. And how do you respond to them? It’s a function of whether people will vote for you or not. So I would have loved to see something like that, constituency-specific issue.”

Ayisha Modi is suffering from abandonment issues, childhood trauma

Media personality Monalisa Abigail Semeha, popularly known as Mona Gucci, has stated that Ayisha Modi is struggling with deep-rooted abandonment issues.

This comes after Ayisha’s recent series of outbursts against dancehall musician Stonebwoy.

Ayisha Modi, who was once involved with the BHIM Nation Camp, recently took to social media to launch a series of scathing attacks against Stonebwoy.

In a stream of viral videos, she accused the “Therapy” hitmaker of ingratitude, disrespect, and sidelining her, despite the sacrifices she claims to have made in support of his brand.

According to Ayisha, these frustrations led to her departure from the BHIM Camp.

But in response to the numerous revelations from Ayisha Modi, Mona Gucci stated that they reflect unresolved personal traumas, particularly abandonment issues stemming from her childhood experiences.

“You have abandonment issues, you need to go and heal yourself and stop this nonsense. Everyone is afraid to say it to you but I will tell you and I know you will come and drag me but I don’t care. When you go to bed you will understand what I’m saying is the truth. You are not a good person.

“Your problem is that growing up you didn’t have love and care as a child. That is the reason why anytime you see any celebrity then you intend to buy a gift for them just to be accepted around them,” she stated.

Samuel Boadu reveals the hidden truth behind his shocking exit from Hearts of Oak

Samuel Boadu is a former coach of Hearts of Oak Samuel Boadu is a former coach of Hearts of Oak

Former manager of Accra Hearts of Oak, Samuel Boadu, has broken his silence on his unexpected departure from the club.

Despite leading the team to an FA Cup victory, Boadu was relieved of his duties in September 2022.

After struggling to replicate the form that had seen him win the Ghana Premier League title, Hearts of Oak sought a fresh start and a new direction to achieve their broader goals.

Boadu led Hearts to five titles in just 18 months.

However, in an interview on the BKB Show, Boadu claimed that the lack of appreciation for his achievements made it increasingly difficult for him to continue.

With the weight of the situation becoming unbearable, he decided to step away to bring peace to both the club and its leadership.

“Honestly, I can’t fully explain why I left. Maybe the bad run influenced some opinions, but even then, I had just won the FA Cup. Some members of management didn’t appreciate what I achieved. It became a heavy burden. So, to allow peace for Togbe and the club, I decided to step aside,” he said.

Boadu, however, was quick to acknowledge the special bond he shared with the Board Chairman of the club, Togbe Afede XIV.

“I often mentioned Togbe’s name after matches, and many didn’t understand why. He’s more like a father and brother to me. His guidance went beyond football; he advised me on personal matters too. Togbe is a good man. If it were just him at Hearts, I would have stayed for 50 years,” he added.

Boadu has since taken charge of Berekum Chelsea, leading them to a spot in the 2024/25 FA Cup semi-finals.

Chip-embedded passport boasts over 150 security upgrades – Ablakwa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has announced a mass roll-out of passport reforms, effective today, Monday, April 28.

These reforms include a transition from biometric to chip-embedded passports, Introduction of a 24-hour passport processing service, Courier delivery of passports to applicants’ doorsteps, an electronic tracking (e-tracking) system, and a 30% reduction in passport application fees.

A passport acquisition period will not be more than 15 working days or five working days under expedited service after completion of the application process.

All new passports will be integrated with the National Identification Authority’s database to streamline applicant verification. The new chip-embedded passport has 175 security features compared to the old one, which has only 32 security features.

The Minister indicated that this move is part of the government’s broader agenda to boost passport security, eliminate intermediaries, and promote greater transparency. The newly upgraded chip-embedded passports, first launched on December 2, 2024, replace the current biometric passports.

They are designed to meet international standards while showcasing Ghana’s cultural identity through iconic Adinkra symbols.

Speaking at the launch event at the Passport Headquarters in Accra, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, described the initiative as a critical milestone in digitising public services and modernising Ghana’s passport system.

Each e-passport features a microchip that securely stores biometric and photographic data, along with advanced anti-fraud elements, including visible and hidden security markers, ensuring safer and more efficient travel.

“It is the first time sector players within the sector put in concerted effort to provide extra security input that is to be detected at the front lines to the second and third lines, in strict compliance to the standards of the ICAO travel document framework.

“The incorporation of nanotechnology into the protective overlays on the bio page, adds an extra layer of security, thereby upgrading the overall security input in terms of features, from 32 to over 150 overt and covert security features in his new chip-embedded passport.

“The integration of Micro Frequency Identification Chip that encodes and stores variable data of the bearer from the visual inspection, photo and machine-readable, crowns the holistic package of an international standard travel document with first-class document security approved by ICAO,” he stated.

OSP drags Charles Bissue, Andy Owusu to Court over galamsey corruption

0

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has charged former Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), Charles Bissue, and one Andy Thomas Owusu with 15 counts of corruption-related offences.

The charges, filed at the High Court, accuse the two of abusing public office for personal gain in connection with illegal mining operations.

In the first count, Mr. Bissue is accused of using his public office for profit, contrary to Section 179C(a) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

According to the charge sheet, he allegedly received GHC15,000 from one Bemanin Adjapong through Andy Owusu on or around January 22, 2019, in Accra.

The OSP alleges that Bissue corruptly abused his position as IMCIM Secretary by accepting the money to circumvent established procedures outlined in the Committee’s 2018 “Road Map for Lifting of Ban on Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining.” These procedures included the verification of documents, acquisition of relevant permits, demarcation and mapping of concessions, and vetting processes.

Through this action, Bissue is alleged to have unlawfully fast-tracked the renewal of mining permits for specific operators.

The 15-count charge sheet details multiple offences involving the abuse of office, corruption, and efforts to undermine lawful mining regulations at the peak of Ghana’s crackdown on illegal mining activities, popularly known as “galamsey.”

The case is expected to be a major test for the OSP’s renewed efforts to prosecute high-profile corruption cases, especially those tied to the controversial fight against illegal mining.

Recovering drug addict appreciates Church of Pentecost for helping him

0

Isaac Yaw Ofosu, who is currently recovering from drug addiction, has shared his inspiring and miraculous transformation journey, expressing his sincere gratitude to the Church of Pentecost for helping to save him from his condition.

At the age of 14, Mr. Ofosu ignorantly indulged in drug abuse, becoming hooked on marijuana, tramadol, cigarettes, alcohol, and other substances, as it was prevalent in his parents’ business. Gradually, he became addicted for over twenty years. For more than two decades, he lived a life marked by pain, isolation, and hopelessness.

What began as a form of fun turned into a long-standing habit, deteriorating his body and damaging his immune system; something he later wished to quit but could not.

“My dad was selling weed and my mom sold alcohol. So, I used to sniff the weed and drink the alcohol. I used to take jot, tramol and every drug. I didn’t know anything but I started mingling with some boys in the area and we were engaged in deviant acts. It got to a point I wasn’t sleeping at home and I could join other boys who were usually contracted to beat or kill people. Later, I realized that what I was doing was not right so I tried to stop but couldn’t because whenever I tried, I would hear voices pushing me to go back.”

Being the youngest child of his parents, they least expected this from him. However, ignorantly, when he started sniffing drugs, Mr. Ofosu did not realize that he could become addicted.

Fortunately, he was saved by some members of the Church of Pentecost at the Nii Okaiman District. He was taken to a rehab center and discharged after a year.

“All I have to say is that God bless them so much for their support,” Mr. Ofosu expressed.

According to Dr. Albert Sedohia, addiction is not curable, but it can only be managed depending on the individual’s lifestyle.

“They’re chronic conditions that have treatment modalities available. So, he is in recovery and forever he will be in recovery,” Dr. Sedohia emphasized.

However, it is everyone’s prayer that Mr. Ofosu will not relapse during his recovery and will remain committed to the trade he is about to start.

Pay your musicians if you demand high-quality music!

0

Lawyer and musician Ace Anan Ankomah Lawyer and musician Ace Anan Ankomah

Lawyer and musician Ace Anan Ankomah has argued that churches should fairly pay their musicians if they demand high-quality sound production.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM with Kwame Dadzie on April 26, 2025, the astute legal practitioner explained that achieving sound quality comparable to international gospel acts like Maverick City requires huge financial investment, extensive rehearsals, and professional studio work, far beyond what volunteer musicians can offer.

“If the church demands City-level sound, musicians can’t deliver that with just an hour of rehearsal at home and two hours on Saturday. You need stems (pre-recorded digital tracks), studio time, in-ear monitors (like P16s), and post-production editing to ensure flawless output for platforms like YouTube,” he added.

Ace Ankomah also pointed out that recording a single high-quality song costs at least GH¢5,000, with expenses reaching up to GH¢12,000 depending on studio and artiste fees.

He also pointed out that the equipment would need to be updated, which could cost up to $80,000.

“This is my point. If you (the pastor) are demanding the quality of music, which requires that the musician must give more time than he can afford to give for free, then the two of you must sit down and have a meeting of minds. Because listen, there’s pre-production, there’s the live recording, there’s the post-production, then you’re going to have to mix the sound. And you just don’t mix sound and put it out there. You have to master the sound. These are all production stages,” he added.

His comments follow recent statements by Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, Founder of Lighthouse Chapel International, who criticised musicians for demanding payment to perform in church.

In a viral social media video, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills described the trend as “nonsense” and labelled it contrary to the spirit of voluntary worship.

Similarly, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome also criticised secular artistes who began their careers in church, accusing them of exploiting the platform that nurtured their talent.

These comments have sparked backlash, particularly from stakeholders of the music industry, who have labelled them as disrespectful.

Group commends Mahama for upholding constitution in CJ’s removal proceeding

President John Mahama and Chief Justice Getrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo President John Mahama and Chief Justice Getrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo

Lawyers in Search of Democracy (LINSOD) has applauded President John Dramani Mahama for what they say is him following the right constitutional procedures in the processes of removing the Chief Justice, Getrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo.

According to them, the president’s actions, including consulting the Council of State, establishing a prima facie case, setting up a committee, and suspending the Chief Justice by warrant, are in full accordance with the constitution, so none can fault him for following the law religiously.

“It is important to note that upon a very careful reading of the provisions in article 146 of the constitution on one hand, and the decision in Agyei Twum, on the other hand, it shall be obvious to all that President john Dramani Mahama has followed the law religiously so far, and none can fault him,” the statement.

In a statement signed by its President, Eric Delanyo Alifo, and copied to GhanaWeb, LINSOD commended President Mahama for his compliance with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution and a landmark Supreme Court decision in the case of Frank Agyei Twum vrs Attorney General and Bright Akwetey.

The group pointed out that the delay by the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) in responding to the suspension of the CJ meant that it could not find any fault with the president’s conduct, describing it as quite unusual.

“It is, therefore, not surprising at all that it took even the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) a considerable amount of time to wade into the public discourse on the subject, and when it finally did, its statement could not find anything to accuse President Mahama of regarding his role in the process so far. Quite unusual,” they added.

LINSOD expressed hope that President Mahama would continue to uphold the law through the remainder of the process and respect the final recommendations of the investigative committee.

“We are aware of a number of court actions seeking to destabilize the smooth operation of the beautiful constitutional process, and we wish to advice the President that though it is the right of the litigants in those actions to file as many processes as they may wish in court, they are all nothing but just a distraction, and we hope they shall fail woefully to derail process,” it added.

The lawyers also described the ongoing process as a crucial test of Ghana’s democracy and praised the president for setting a high standard of constitutional leadership.

Ghana’s gold reserves surge to 31.01 tonnes as of April 2025

0

Ghana’s gold reserves has hit a significant mark in its economic strategy with its gold reserves increasing to 31.01 tonnes as of April 2025.

This marks a threefold rise from the 10.2 tonnes it recorded in April 2023, underscoring Ghana’s strengthening its financial stability.

The Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) gold reserves now constitute approximately 41.2% of the country’s total international reserves.

This substantial growth positions Ghana as the fifth-largest holder of central bank gold reserves in Africa, trailing only Algeria, Libya, Egypt, and South Africa.

The Bank of Ghana’s gold reserves climbed to a total of 31.01 tonnes as of March 31, 2025.

This reflects a steady build-up strategy aimed at strengthening the country’s foreign reserves and monetary stability framework.

It also marks a notable increase from 30.81 tonnes recorded at the end of February 2025, and continues a sustained growth trend that has been observed over the past two years.

Starting from 8.78 tonnes in May 2023, the central bank’s gold holdings have more than tripled, underscoring a strategic pivot toward leveraging Ghana’s position as a major gold producer.

The domestic gold purchase programme is seen as playing a key role in build up with the Central Banking noting at the time of the launch of the programme that it will pave the way to grow its foreign exchange reserves to foster confidence, enhances currency stability, creates a more attractive environment for foreign direct investments and economic growth.

Four fiery moments Aboubakar Ouattara clashed with journalists

0

Aboubakar Ouattara is the head coach of Hearts of Oak Aboubakar Ouattara is the head coach of Hearts of Oak

Following his recent “I’m not Jesus Christ” statement, Hearts of Oak coach Aboubakar Ouattara, has made it clear that he won’t tolerate media criticism that crosses the line.

His response was a blunt reminder that while he accepts critique, personal attacks and unfounded assumptions won’t go unchallenged.

This is nothing new, Ouattara has a history of standing up to the media when he feels they have overstepped.

Here are some of the most memorable moments where Ouattara fired back at journalists.

1. “I’m not Jesus Christ” — responding to criticism

Ouattara has often been on the receiving end of harsh media scrutiny, but during an interview with Accra-based Hot FM, he addressed it head-on.

Frustrated with personal attacks disguised as criticism, he made it clear that he would not tolerate disrespect.

“If you come before me with the same attitude you used to insult me on the radio, I will respond accordingly. You came here with a personal opinion about me, not about the match.

“Nobody feeds anyone here, so say whatever you want. There are journalists who criticize me for a whole week without insulting me, and when we meet, I still speak with them because I know they’re just doing their job. But if you insult me somewhere and I hear it, or you stand before me and speak out of line, I’m not Jesus Christ, I won’t just let it go. I will respond.”

2. “Have I told you our ambition is to win the league?” — on title expectations

After a damaging loss to Bechem United in March 2025, Ouattara was asked about the team’s title ambitions.

Despite the media pushing the idea that Hearts of Oak could still win the league, Ouattara wasn’t interested in speculating.

“Have I told you that our ambition is to win the league? This is not Makola Market. There are 12 matches left, which means 36 points are still up for grabs. We’re playing the game, this is a league. Don’t judge now; let us finish the season first. On June 8th, we will talk about the league.”

Ouattara made it clear there’s still a long way to go, and premature judgments won’t change the course of the season.

3. “I need three points, not praise” — deflecting concerns over style of play

Following a hard-fought win over Medeama in April 2025, Ouattara was asked about the team’s performance, with some questioning the style of play despite the victory.

His answer was direct and to the point.

“Sometimes, I ask myself, what do you [journalists] want? When we win, the performance is not good. When we play well and lose, then you criticize us. Tell me the truth: what do you want? As for me, I need three points. If I get the three points, all this commentary is not my concern. The table is not about performance, we want three points.”

4. “Find the meaning of tactics” — responding to tactical criticism

In a tense moment after a 1-1 draw with Vision FC, Ouattara was asked about the team’s tactics, with some media members claiming that Vision FC had outplayed Hearts strategically.

Outraged by the question, Ouattara snapped back, entreating the journalist to research more about his question.

“Go and take your dictionary and find the meaning of tactics. Next time, come and ask me that question.”

Ouattara has built a reputation for standing his ground against the media, and his recent comments are just the latest example of his unfiltered approach.

Whether defending his tactics, challenging unrealistic expectations, or pushing back against unfair criticism, Ouattara has proven he won’t back down.

In the meantime, Hearts of Oak occupy sixth place on the league standings having won 45 points after 29 games.

Boakye Agyarko calls on NPP to reassess Thank You Tour and prevent further damage

0

Boakye Agyarko, a prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed concerns over the direction of the party’s ongoing Thank You Tour, which was initially intended to reignite hope and strengthen ties with supporters.

According to him, the tour, instead of fostering unity, is descending into internal discord, blame-shifting, and growing strife.

Weija-Gbawe MP launches 2025 BECE mock to boost preparedness

0

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has officially launched the MP’s BECE Mock Examination 2025, a major initiative aimed at boosting the academic preparedness of final-year Basic Education Certificate Examination candidates across the constituency.

Speaking at a ceremony held on Monday, April 28, and attended by the Municipal Director of Education, the Municipal Chief Executive, Queen Mothers of Weija and Gbawe, head teachers, school administrators, parents, and students, Mr. Shaib highlighted the critical importance of thorough preparation in achieving academic success.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” he said, quoting Nelson Mandela.

The MP’s BECE Mock Examination initiative will offer every final-year student access to standardised practice exams, marked and assessed by experienced educators.

Participation is completely free, ensuring that no student is left behind due to financial limitations.

Highlighting the challenges faced by many learners, Mr. Shaib noted that even brilliant students often underperform because of limited exposure and a lack of structured exam practice.

He explained that the new initiative aims to level the playing field, giving all students, regardless of background, an equal opportunity to succeed.

As part of the programme, schools that perform exceptionally well in both the mock examinations and the final BECE will receive special awards and packages.

This incentive is designed to foster healthy academic competition and to motivate both teachers and students to strive for excellence.

This initiative is intended to foster healthy academic competition and inspire both teachers and students to pursue excellence.

“This project is a demonstration of our shared commitment to the future of our children and reflects the value we place on education as the true cornerstone of development, opportunity, and empowerment,” Mr. Shaib stated.

He expressed his appreciation to the Ghana Education Service, head teachers, teachers, parents, constituency executives, and all stakeholders who helped bring the initiative to life.

Mr. Shaib urged students to seize the opportunity, work hard, and believe in their limitless potential.

“Prepare well, perform well — mock exams pave the way for excellence,” he advised.

Take advantage of carbon market potential – Parliament advises businesses

0

The Select Committee on Environment, Science and Technology say it is upbeat about the huge socio-economic potential in the carbon market, calling on businesses to tap into its prospects.

The Committee said the country could earn millions of dollars in taxes, fees, direct investment into innovative smart technology, create jobs through development projects for local communities, enhance local air quality, and build resilience to climate change.

The leadership made the call at the end of a two-day training on the progress of Ghana carbon market initiative, organised by the Carbon Market Office (CMO) of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) for the committee members.

Yaw Frimpong Addo, the Chairperson of the Committee, urged local businesses to take interest and identify opportunities in the carbon market value chain and participate fully.

“I am still learning about revenue streams the value chain offers and how local business participation will boost the economy. We should not lose our guard like we did in the cocoa sector where the beans are exported and the country makes less revenue,” he said.

“It is sad to know that out of the 70 projects presented to the CMO seeking approval, only about seven are initiatives from Ghanaians with the majority being foreigners. I acknowledge the technicalities involved in the market but the CMO officials are at hand to provide all the explanations businesses will need.”

Addo, who is the Member of Parliament for Manso Adubia Constituency in the Ashanti Region, said the committee members would educate their fellow parliamentarians and constituents on the carbon market and the opportunities it presented to businesses.

The carbon market allows companies and countries to buy and sell carbon credits – permits that represent 1ton of greenhouse gas emissions reduced or removed or avoided from going into the atmosphere.

This system helps countries like Ghana to raise funds and enhance its climate ambition through mitigation activities while contributing to global emission reductions.

A recent report from the Office estimates that Ghana’s carbon market could attract more than one billion dollars in investment by 2030.

Professor Hamza Adam, the Ranking Member of the Committee, described the carbon market as an emerging economy that Ghana was well positioned to rake in revenue to contribute to the transformation of the economy.

He noted that the market was “pregnant” with projects including technology – based solutions such as clean cooking stoves, solar, and nature-based solutions.

“Our youth stand the chance of benefiting from capacity building to render services including conducting monitoring, reporting and verification services (MRV), which hither to would have been sublated to foreigners,” he said.

Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the EPA, stated that the carbon market was a huge opportunity to meet global climate obligations while building a resilient economy.

She said the CMO was committed to facilitating the scaling up of projects and increasing local participation in the growing carbon market ecosystem.

One of the key focus areas of the Office in 2025 was to assist local service providers in securing the necessary accreditation to operate within the carbon market space, she said.

She hinted that the Office was also taking deliberate steps to ensure that carbon projects were anchored in Ghana by promoting local manufacturing and assembling facilities.

As of December 2024, the CMO had received 70 project proposals focused on cutting emissions and promoting sustainable development.

Leading the pipeline of project is the clean-cooking initiative, which aims to distribute 9.1 million efficient stoves by 2030. It accounts for 26 of the proposals received so far.

Other proposals include three electric mobility projects, targeting the distribution of 120,160 electric bikes and vehicles.

Additionally, 15 projects centre on nature-based solutions, with others focusing on solar energy biochar, wastewater treatment, and electric vehicle initiatives.

Ghana has already signed bilateral agreements to trade carbon credits with Switzerland, Sweden, and Singapore.

It also has an agreement with South Korea, which is currently seeking Cabinet approval, while that of Liechtenstein is at the negotiation stage.

Bawumia attributes NPP’s defeat to voter apathy in six regions

0

The 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has identified voter apathy in six regions as a major factor behind the party’s loss in the 2024 general elections.

The regions, he noted, are Greater Accra, Ashanti, Eastern, Western, Bono, and Central.

Speaking during day three of the NPP’s “Thank You” tour in the Ahafo Region on Monday, April 28, Bawumia highlighted the significant number of abstentions recorded in these areas, stressing the urgent need for the party to address the issues that led to the low voter turnout.

“Six regions counted for those who abstained in the election. The Greater Accra region accounted for 571,000, the Ashanti region 489,000, the Eastern region 258,000, the Central region 230,000, 164,000 persons in the Western region and 100,000 voters in the Bono region.

“These six regions were our problem, and they are our strongholds as well. The situation would have been different if they had come out to vote,” he said.

In addition to voter apathy, Dr. Bawumia further cited several other contributing factors to the party’s defeat, including the arrogance of power, the high cost of living, the failure to reshuffle government officials, the introduction of the E-Levy, and the controversial haircut policy.

Over 50,000 teachers receive promotions

0

Up to 50,458 teachers out of a total of 54,227 teachers who were successful in last year’s aptitude test have been promoted, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has confirmed.

In addition, GNAT said 1,417 out of 1,579 teachers removed from the payroll have also had their salaries reactivated, with only the remaining 162 yet to be impacted.

“We can confirm that out of the 54,227 teachers who were successful in the 2024 aptitude test for promotion, 50,458 have been placed on their correct grades in April 2025.

The outstanding, together with the backlog of the 2023 batch, to be placed in May 2025,” a letter signed by the General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah, to members of the association said.

It said the development followed a meeting with the Ghana Education Service (GES) on Friday, April 25, 2025.

On lower rank promotions, it said as of last Friday, the GES had informed the unions that all 16 regions had submitted the data, and the placement would be effected in May 2025.

Regarding the upgrading relative to returnees from further studies, the statement indicated that “a significant number of teachers in this category had not been upgraded, since 2023”.

Agreement

The communication said it had been agreed that all such teachers would be upgraded by the end of May 2025.

“The Director-General of Ghana Education Service (GES) has promised to write to the Regional Directors to ensure that the upgrading is done without fail,” it said.

A stakeholders meeting, it said, would be held in May 2025, to fix dates for the next aptitude test for promotion.

It said all the outstanding issues in the Collective Agreement for GES staff would be addressed next month, prominent among them being the salary disparities on the Single Spine Pay Structure.

The teacher union consequently expressed gratitude to President John Mahama for the 20 per cent allowance for teachers in deprived areas.

Gratitude

“The Teacher Unions express our gratitude to His Excellency the President of the Republic for his pronouncement on its payment, following the understanding that work on it is to be done, commencing May 2025,” the statement said.

With regard to the decoupling of Director 2 and Director 1, it said: “We again express our gratitude to His Excellency for the decoupling of Director 2 and subsequently Director 1 from being coterminous with political districts and regions, thus paving the way for the promotion of Deputy Directors to Director 2, and subsequently Director 1.

“It’s welcome news, and we hope to work with the relevant stakeholders to bring it to fruition,” it said.

The statement further commended the President for the supply of sanitary pads to female learners, and expressed the hope that it would attain the envisaged outcomes.

“We wish to assure our members that the unions, together with the relevant parties, are working tirelessly to conclude discussions on all other issues, and we shall not fail you,” the statement said.

GNAT reaction

Mr Musah later told the Daily Graphic that the development was a breakthrough between the government and teachers.

“We would like to express our profound gratitude to the President, at least, for his timely intervention,” he said.

He said since the issues came up, the GES had been very forthcoming, and expressed the hope that by next month, “we will be able to resolve the issue”.

Background

GNAT had given the government up to April 30, 2025, to address all issues affecting teachers.

The issues included the non-implementation of the Scheme of Service for GES staff and the implementation of the Human Resource Management Information System, which GNAT said had caused some challenges to teachers, including delays in their salaries and promotion.

The demands were part of the directives given by the National Labour Commission after meeting three teacher unions and their employers, represented by ministries and the GES, after the unions embarked on strike on March 20 last year.

At the time, the commission communicated that “having heard the disputes and having met the parties jointly and in separate (caucus) sessions, made some findings and thereby gave some directives, among which was that since the GES had no Scheme of Service for the GES Staff, and to ensure that future appointments do not encounter such challenges, the GES must provide its staff with a Scheme of Service”.

Evans Yeboah’s Election as GOC Treasurer and Global Appointment: A New Era for Ghana Sports

0

Ghana’s sports industry is poised for transformative growth following the election of Evans Yeboah as Treasurer of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and his subsequent selection to the World Board of the International Sports Institute (ISI).

A career spanning over two decades in sports finance and administration, Yeboah’s leadership signals a strategic shift toward transparency, sustainable funding, and global collaboration—key pillars of his campaign mantra: “Grants, Growth, and Glory.”

A Track Record of Financial Excellence

Yeboah’s credentials speak volumes:

  • 20+ years in sports finance, including roles as GOC Vice President, GOC Finance Chair, and Vice-President of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) and Treasurer of the National Paralympic Committee.
  • Goldman Sachs-trained financial strategist with expertise in finance and investment management.
  • 14-year tenure as Africa Badminton’s Governing Body, including Finance Chair, overseeing continental funding structures.

His election as GOC Treasurer ensures that Ghana’s sports federations will benefit from data-driven financial policies, ensuring fair and performance-based disbursement of Olympic Solidarity funds, government grants, and sponsorship revenues.

Grants: Maximizing Funding for Athletes and Federations

One of Yeboah’s key mandates is optimizing Ghana’s access to IOC and international sports grants, including:

  • Olympic Scholarships for Athletes and National Federations (LA 2028) – Ensuring Ghanaian athletes secure training and qualification funds.
  • Team Support Grants – Strategic allocation to high-potential sports like athletics, boxing, Badminton and Football.
  • Youth Development Funds – Investing in grassroots talent for long-term success, including the upcoming Youth Olympic Games.

His role on the International Sports Institute’s World Board further strengthens Ghana’s ability to attract global sports investments, ensuring federations receive timely, transparent, and impactful funding.

Growth: Financial Sustainability for Ghana Sports

Yeboah’s vision extends beyond grants—his financial model prioritizes:
✔ Corporate Partnerships – Leveraging his Goldman Sachs background to attract sponsors.
✔ Digital Tracking of Funds – Implementing real-time grant disbursement dashboards.
✔ Anti-Corruption Safeguards – Ensuring every cedi reaches athletes and coaches.

His appointment to the ISI World Board means Ghana will now have a direct voice in international sports funding policies, influencing how grants are structured for developing nations.

Glory: Elevating Ghana’s Global Sports Standing

With better-managed funds, Ghana can expect:

  • More athletes qualifying for the Olympics/World Championships.
  • Stronger youth development pipelines.
  • Enhanced reputation in international sports governance.

Yeboah’s dual role—GOC Treasurer and ISI World Board Member—positions Ghana as a leader in sports financial innovation, setting a benchmark for Africa.

Conclusion: A New Dawn for Ghana Sports

Evans Yeboah’s leadership marks a turning point—where financial accountability meets global sports strategy. His “Grants, Growth, and Glory” agenda ensures that Ghana’s sports industry will no longer struggle with funding shortfalls but thrive through smart investments, transparency, and world-class partnerships.

The future of Ghanaian sports is brighter than ever, and with Yeboah at the financial helm, the medals, the talent, and the global recognition will follow for the benefit of all national federations.

King’sDay2025: Reliving an impeccable Dutch culture, deepening Ghana-Netherlands relations

0

H.E. Jeroen Verheul

April 27 is a historic day in the Netherlands; a momentous occasion when the people celebrate the birthday of their beloved King Willem-Alexander. It is a historic moment etched in tradition and unity, and packed with activities that embody the rich Dutch culture.

The King of Netherlands holds a symbolic role as head of state and the monarch of the Royal House; hence the annual celebration of his birthday has become a symbol of national unity.

“The Royal House stands for the unity of the Netherlands as a nation. So for us, the celebration of the birthday of our king is also a celebration of the unity of our country and the independence of our country since 1648,” Netherlands’ ambassador to Ghana, Jeroen Verheul, shared the significance of the day in an exclusive interview.

The King’s Day, also known as “Koningsdag” reflects a vibrant expression of Dutch national pride and unity; serving as the most significant public celebration across the country. It is more than a birthday celebration: a profound tribute to Dutch heritage, freedom, and communal spirit.

This year’s celebration will be marked on Saturday, April 26, 2025—when the king will visit Doetinchem, one of the cities in the Netherlands, and interact with the people to celebrate his birthday, a blissful occasion laced with sports, games and musical performances.

“In a number of places, in a number of cities, there are free markets, so people are allowed to put things up for sale without any permits or any difficulties. They put a blanket in front of their house and sell their goods or products, amid fanfare, games and musical activities,” Ambassador Verheul narrated how the day is marked across Dutch cities and streets.

In Ghana, he said the celebrations will kick-start with an official reception that will host government  officials, the diplomatic and business community at his residence on Thursday.

This will be followed by a gathering of the Dutch community, entrepreneurs and Ghanaian business partners. This celebration seeks to entrench the good relations between the embassy,  the Dutch community and their local business counterparts.

Ghana and the Netherlands share a rich and enduring bilateral relationship that spans over more than three centuries, rooted in trade, diplomacy, and cultural exchange.

In Ghana, the King’s Day celebration is also an opportunity for cementing the enviable Ghana-Netherlands economic relations where investors and the business community are convened to explore partnerships and investment opportunities in both nations.

Trade has been a cornerstone of Ghana-Netherlands relations. Historically, Ghana exported commodities like gold, ivory, and cocoa, while importing Dutch textiles and firearms. In recent years, the Netherlands has become one of Ghana’s top trading partners, with bilateral trade reaching €2.2 billion in 2020. Ghana’s exports include cocoa, fruits, and vegetables, while Dutch exports to Ghana comprise machinery, chemicals, and electronics.

There are currently over 150 Dutch companies operating in Ghana, investing more than €2 billion across sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and renewable energy, according to the Netherlands-African Business Council (NABC).

According to ambassador Verheul, the embassy will continue to facilitate investments to key areas of interest for Dutch investors looking to explore business opportunities in key areas of the Ghanaian economy, especially in the horticulture, cocoa and security sub-sectors.

Although direct development aid to Ghana has ceased, he reaffirmed the commitment of the Netherlands government to support the country’s growth aspirations, through targeted investment in the provision of small grants to advance innovative solutions in key sectors of the local economy.

He said: “The Netherlands phased out development cooperation for Ghana almost a decade ago. But we still have some specific budgets to support trade and investment, especially in horticulture, cocoa and security initiatives.”

“Going forward, big grants and economic support will be channeled through multilateral institutions like the World Bank, United Nations, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Union (EU)—but not on bilateral basis,” he added.

In all, we can say that the annual celebration of the King’s Day by the Netherlands Embassy in Ghana does not only sell the rich Dutch culture and heritage locally, but also provides an opportunity for the Dutch government to affirm its position as a reliable partner to Ghana’s development and growth aspirations.

My husband doesn’t cheat on me and I feel no woman wants him

0

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’ve been married for six years to the most incredible man I’ve ever met.

Since we started dating up until now, there has never been a single instance of cheating or even questionable behaviour with another woman.

My husband is well-off, handsome, loving, and caring, qualities I believe any woman would admire.

We have two children and live in our own home. A few months ago, he invited his younger brother to stay with us while he looked for a job. Since then, I’ve noticed his brother constantly bringing different women home, even though he claims to love his girlfriend.

She often calls me crying, saying he won’t stop cheating, but she doesn’t want to leave because she loves him. Honestly, it’s like watching a romantic drama unfold, and part of me finds it entertaining.

But this situation has made me reflect on my own marriage. I dated my husband for two years before we got married, and not once did we argue about cheating or mistrust.

Our relationship has been peaceful, almost too peaceful. I thought marriage might add some excitement, but nothing changed. There’s still no drama, no suspicion, nothing.

Sometimes, I catch myself feeling like I’m married to a man no other woman wants.

If someone else desired him, even if it was just emotional temptation, I feel like I would at least feel proud or even a bit jealous.

That kind of jealousy, I believe, can ignite passion. But he’s never given me a reason to feel insecure.

No password on his phone, no shady behaviour, he is completely transparent, and since we got married, it’s always been my photo as his profile picture.

I know it sounds strange, but I’ve started feeling emotionally disconnected. I’ve even had thoughts of stepping out just to experience what it’s like to be with someone who is desired by others.

It’s not that my husband isn’t attractive, he is. I just don’t understand why no one else seems to pursue him, especially in a world where infidelity is so common.

I am deeply confused and disturbed by my own thoughts. Should I go out with someone else just to trigger some jealousy in him? I know he’d be heartbroken if I ever cheated, and truthfully, he is good in bed and checks all the boxes as a partner.

I don’t even have a “real” reason to consider cheating. So why am I feeling this way?

Please, I need advice.
