Nana Ogyeahohuo Barima Anum has been arrested by NAIMOS Nana Ogyeahohuo Barima Anum has been arrested by NAIMOS

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has reportedly arrested a man claiming to be the Chief of Dokokyina, Nana Ogyeahohuo Barima Anum, for allegedly attempting to interfere with a lawful anti-galamsey operation at Besiasi in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region.

The arrest reportedly took place around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 9, 2025, after the chief allegedly pursued members of the taskforce in an effort to disrupt the arrest of Asenso Kwabena, described by authorities as a ‘notorious illegal mining kingpin’.

In a viral post on X on November 10, 2025, NAIMOS confirmed that the chief was intercepted while driving a grey Mercedes-Benz ML 350 with a registration number GT 870-14.

NAIMOS reject GH¢100k bribe, arrest alleged galamsey kingpin in the Eastern Region

He was subsequently taken into custody and handed over to the Ghana Police Service, while his vehicle was impounded.

Earlier that day, the taskforce had conducted a major raid at Besiasi, leading to the arrest of Asenso Kwabena for operating an illegal mining site said to be heavily polluting the Ayensu River and endangering surrounding communities.

According to NAIMOS, the suspect arrived at the scene armed with a pistol and allegedly attempted to bribe the team with GH¢100,000 to avoid arrest.

The taskforce rejected the bribe, seized the cash and mining equipment, shut down the site, and transported the suspect for further interrogation.

Environmental journalist Erastus Asare Donkor of the Multimedia Group, who covered the operation, reportedly confirmed the chain of events, drawing widespread commendation for the taskforce’s decision to reject the alleged bribe.

Both suspects are currently assisting with investigations and are being jointly handled by the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney General’s Office.

NAIMOS Attack: NDC organiser descends heavily on Asutifi North MP

NAIMOS officials have emphasised that the law will be applied ‘without fear or favour’, cautioning that any individual regardless of social or traditional standing who obstructs anti-galamsey operations will face prosecution.

The Ayensuano District has been identified as one of the illegal mining hotspots under heightened surveillance as the government intensifies its crackdown on galamsey activities nationwide.

Ghana Gold Board, National Security apprehend 25 in anti-gold smuggling operation

Deputy CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, Richard Nunekpeku, Esq. Deputy CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, Richard Nunekpeku, Esq.

At least 25 individuals, including foreign nationals, have been arrested for engaging in illicit gold trading, smelting, and assaying in Ghana.

The suspects, comprising four Indian nationals and Ghanaians, were apprehended in two separate operations conducted by the Ghana Gold Board in collaboration with the National Security operatives at Dome Pillar 2 and Akweteyman-Achimota.

At a press conference in Accra on November 10, 2025, the Deputy CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, Richard Nunekpeku, Esq., stated that the first operation involved four Indian nationals and a Ghanaian arrested while smelting gold and manufacturing jewellery without a license at a jewellery shop in Dome Kwabenya.

Upon arrest, the first accused and owner of Mahalaxmi Ghana Limited, Bhaskar Jashu, voluntarily opened a safe containing the following exhibits: GH¢22,670.00, 34 pieces of assorted rings and necklaces.

Other items recovered included 22 rings, 50 additional rings, 2 cufflinks, 6 lockets, and 2 earrings, among others.

On November 7, the Deputy CEO revealed that three gold bars retrieved from the safe were assayed, with the report confirming their authenticity and a market value of GH¢453,032.73.

In the second operation, 20 individuals were arrested at the premises of Legend Precious Metal Ltd, located at Akweteyman-Achimota in the Greater Accra Region. Among them, seven were foreigners and thirteen were Ghanaians.

During the arrests, the team recovered eight metal bars suspected to be gold, which had been concealed in various parts of the premises.

The accused individuals, along with the exhibits, were taken to the Ghana Gold Board offices for further investigation. Searches also revealed various legal documents, including purchase and sale agreements for gold trading, assaying reports, and receipts.

Additionally, authorities recovered $112,500 and GH¢64,014.00 from several suspects. Sidearms were also seized from suspects Clement Agbaglo and Emmanuel McAddy at the time of arrest.

The Deputy CEO noted that while some of the arrested persons were granted police inquiry bail, 14 of the 20 arrested in the second incident have already been arraigned in court as of November 10, 2025.

“The activities of these individuals are having a significant impact on the country’s finances. The Gold Board is determined to ensure that all suspects are thoroughly interrogated, and if found culpable, they will be prosecuted according to the law,” he stated.

He added, “This is particularly important because the GoldBod Act prohibits all foreigners from engaging in gold trading in Ghana unless they are licensed by the Ghana Gold Board. All transactions involving our precious minerals must go through the proper channels.”

He reiterated the Ghana Gold Board’s commitment to sanitizing the gold trading industry by apprehending smugglers while providing licenses to those legitimately engaged in Ghana’s gold trade.

FIFA officials met to discuss player welfare ahead of the 2026 World Cup FIFA officials met to discuss player welfare ahead of the 2026 World Cup

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström and other FIFA officials held fruitful discussions with players’ unions from across the world at a meeting held in Rabat, Morocco on the day of the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2025™.

The meeting was also attended by the members of the Players’ Voice Panel, including honorary captain George Weah, and several legends and world champions from men’s and women’s football.

The meeting, attended by representatives from 30 players’ unions, followed on from the constructive exchanges in July 2025 in New York, United States, between FIFA and players’ unions in the context of the FIFA Club World Cup™.

“At FIFA, we remain committed to further enhancing player welfare and working conditions across the world by implementing concrete and meaningful measures with a view to improving football for the future. This is evident through the substantial investment that FIFA will be making through the FIFA Fund for Professional Players, and through other opportunities to engage via the various FIFA bodies, as well as other important initiatives agreed at this initial FIFA Professional Players Consultation Forum gathering.

“We would like to thank all the players’ unions which have proactively approached FIFA to engage in open discussions. FIFA wants to work with all those genuinely interested in progress and respectful dialogue, our door is always open to all views that respect these values. This is a real movement for the players and we are happy about that,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

EXPLAINER: Why VAR would have awarded Hearts of Oak’s goal against Kotoko

The first point of agreement between the representatives present was the formalisation of the creation of the FIFA Professional Players Consultation Forum as a group to advance the collective interests of professional players around the world.

The following key initiatives, which focus on player welfare and general working conditions, were endorsed by FIFA and over 30 players’ unions worldwide in Rabat:

Player rest and recovery: Subsequent to the kick-off meeting held with unions in July, the following principles were once again supported:

-At least 72 hours of rest between matches

-Rest period/holiday of at least 21 days between seasons

-One rest day per week

-Measures to consider long-haul intercontinental trips and climatic conditions.

These points will be further consulted with other key stakeholders, particularly in the context of the discussions on the International Match Calendar.

FIFA Fund for Professional Players: FIFA will establish and manage a fund for professional players, allocating an investment of $20 million for the 2026-2029 period.

The objective of the fund is to provide financial support to players who are unable to recover outstanding salaries due to financial difficulties faced by their clubs. The relevant regulations will be defined by FIFA in due course in consultation with the players’ unions.

Representation of players’ unions in FIFA bodies: Players’ unions representatives will be included in a number of FIFA Committees to ensure the players’ voice is heard in the consultative processes at the highest level.

Development support for players’ unions: FIFA will establish a dedicated support mechanism for players’ unions subject to strict good governance criteria. This support will be aimed at developing players’ union activities within their respective national jurisdictions. Special focus will be given to programmes aimed at training and educating youth and professional players, as well as developing and growing women’s football.

Legal matters: A working group involving FIFA and the players’ unions will be established to advance legal matters through regular meetings and continuous dialogue. The working group will cover topics such as the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, national dispute resolution chambers and minimum standards for player contracts.

Further meetings between FIFA and players’ unions are due to take place in the coming months.

The president accused of tarnishing Tanzania’s long-held image of stability

0

Tanzania remains gripped by the aftermath of its worst post-election violence in decades, a crisis that has shaken its long-standing reputation as a beacon of peace and stability in Africa.

It has also earned the country rare rebukes from regional and continental organisations.

In a defiant inauguration speech on Monday, President Samia Suluhu Hassan said the election was fair and transparent but acknowledged people had died during the protests. She blamed foreign actors for the deadly protests.

The death toll is not clear but families continue to search for or bury relatives killed following the recent disputed poll, that Samia won with 98% of the vote.

Samia, the soft-spoken leader whose calm and gentle demeanour, initially inspired optimism when she assumed power in 2021 after the sudden death in office of her authoritarian predecessor, John Magufuli.

But that has now changed.

“Samia has pushed Tanzania to its thick winter of protests, instability and uncertainty,” Prof Peter Kagwanja, a Kenyan policy analyst, told the BBC.

The protests, organised by young people, drew clear parallels with global Gen Z-led mobilisations against entrenched leadership and unresponsive governments.

Analysts say while the unrest was unprecedented for Tanzania, it was preceded by a tense political climate – marked by stalled reforms, years of simmering youth anger, power tussles within the ruling party and the sustained persecution of opposition leaders.

“The protests were just a culmination of years of anger and grievances that have been bottled in by Tanzanians,” Godfrey Mwampembwa, a Tanzanian-born political cartoonist, popularly known as Gado, said.

Gado’s satirical cartoons depicting President Samia as authoritarian and intolerant of political competition, have been circulated widely on social media.

Veteran Tanzanian journalist Jenerali Ulimwengu described in a column how the recent election was “the boiling point reached by societal soups that have been cooking for decades in a slow cooker without being noticed by an absent-minded rulership, totally submerged in the middle of its gravy train”.

Similar sentiments were shared by Gado, who accused the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party of “burying its head in the sand” and being “tone-deaf” to Tanzanians’ growing calls for change.

“CCM has over the years disenfranchised the masses and disregarded the very state institutions that keep it in power, ” said the satirist, who is based in neighbouring Kenya but has been closely following events in his home country.

Charles Onyango-Obbo, political commentator on East African matters, agrees that the CCM “had long mistaken calm for maturity, but it was only age and arrogance hiding behind a glorious history”.

“It confused the people’s silence with peace, not realising it was the quiet of exhaustion,” he wrote.

Unlike others in the region, the CCM, which emerged from the Tanganyika African National Union, is a post-colonial liberation party that has maintained a firm grip not only on the levers of power but also on the nation’s psyche.

But it is the nature of this latest election that has exposed a shocking new side of Tanzania, a country long seen as protest-shy, especially when compared with neighbouring Kenya.

In the months preceding election day, the CCM government worked to systematically eliminate any credible competition, according to analysts.

The two main opposition leaders were blocked from contesting the poll – Tundu Lissu is in detention on treason charges, which he denies, while Luhaga Mpina’s candidacy was rejected on technical grounds.

According to Prof Kagwanja, that act alone negated what Tanzania and its founding President Julius Nyerere stood for.

“You don’t jail your opponents, you seek to get support from people against the opposition,” said Prof Kagwanja.

Fondly known as Mama Samia, the 65-year-old president is now facing mounting accusations of heading a repressive government responsible for violently crushing historic protests.

Her approach to leadership was initially admired both at home and abroad as she allowed opposition parties to organise rallies and criticise the government without the fear of grave repercussions.

She had pledged to re-open Tanzania to the world through her “4R” doctrine – reconciliation, resilience, rebuilding and reform.

Having been born and raised in Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous archipelago known for humility and hospitality, it was unsurprising that Samia inspired a sense of relief when she assumed power in 2021.

But analysts say that as Samia set her eyes on a second term, she started seeing internal party pressure within the CCM and the resurgence of the opposition as threats to her ambition.

For the last three years, she had reshuffled the cabinet multiple times and replaced military and intelligence chiefs, in moves seen as weeding out loyalists of her predecessor.

“Within the CCM, she resorted to a Magufuli script of manipulating the party, centralising power and creating a cabal of trusted loyalists as the new fulcrum of power,” said Prof Kagwanja.

Samia’s calculated political manoeuvres – which earned her the nickname “Simba jike” (Swahili for lioness) among her supporters – paid off as the CCM nominated her as its presidential candidate in January.

Months to the election, a wave of abductions, arrests and the brutal killings of opposition members gripped the country, shattering hopes for reforms and reconciliation.

The political space had drastically shrunk in the run-up to the recent election, that was overshadowed by an internet blackout and a curfew.

Hundreds may have died in post-election unrest according to the opposition. The authorities are yet to release an official death toll.

The violence was shocking for a nation that had cultivated an image of calm, consensus, and order for nearly six decades.

“The myth of Tanzanian exceptionalism lies in ruins,” stated Mr Onyango-Obbo.

In an uncommon critique, the African Union and the regional Southern African Development Community said Samia’s electoral victory did not meet accepted democratic standards, citing ballot-stuffing, repression and systemic flaws.

The main opposition, the Party for Democracy and Development (Chadema), dismissed the results as “completely fabricated”.

“Samia’s challenge was not winning the election. Instead, it was to win the hearts and minds of Tanzanians and East Africans that she was elected in a fair contest. Lamentably, Samia chose coronation. She closed all avenues to a fair contest,” said Prof Kagwanja.

As she begins to serve her second term in office, analysts say Samia is facing mounting international scrutiny which could undermine her legitimacy to lead the East African country.

Afia Schwarzenegger Alleges ECG Disconnected Daddy Lumba’s Radio Station

  • Afia Schwarzenegger has alleged that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) disconnected power to DL FM over unpaid bills after Daddy Lumba’s death
  • In a video, she claimed that the late musician’s manager, Phillip Appiah Kubi, also known as Roman Fada, quickly cleared the bills to keep the station on air

In a viral video, the U.S.-based Ghanaian social media personality claimed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), disconnected power to the Accra-based station over unpaid bills shortly after Daddy Lumba’s death.

Afia Schwarzenegger claimed that the late singer’s manager, Phillip Appiah Kubi, popularly known as Roman Fada, settled the bill to keep the station in operation.

She also claimed that staff at the station faced layoffs after Lumba’s death, but his second wife, Priscilla Ofori-Atta, aka Odo Broni, raised funds to pay their salaries and keep the station in business.

Roman Fada recently faced scrutiny after the late singer’s family claimed that he was not Daddy Lumba’s manager, contrary to his claims to the public.

In a statement signed by Akosua Serwaa Fosuh, the late musician’s wife, and his sister-in-law, Ernestina Brempomaa Fosuh, the family claimed that Roman Fada had been spreading false funeral details and alleged that he was officially relieved of his role as Daddy Lumba’s manager before the late singer’s death.

Responding to the claims, Afia Schwarzenegger said Roman Fada’s actions demonstrated his loyalty to Daddy Lumba, even after his death.

The Facebook video of Afia Schwarzenegger’s claims is below.

Daddy Lumba’s family disowns Afia Schwarzenegger

Afia Schwarzenegger’s staunch defence of Roman Fada and Odo Broni was made in a video responding to one of Daddy Lumba’s uncles stating that she was not a member of the Fosuh family.

Since highlife legend Daddy Lumba’s death, Afia Schwarzenegger has inserted herself into the ongoing family drama regarding his burial.

She claimed the musician was her uncle and declared her support for Odo Broni as his legal widow ahead of Akosua Serwaa.

Speaking to the media, an uncle of Daddy Lumba emphatically stated that she was not a member of the family, as she hailed from Adwatia, while Daddy Lumba’s family hailed from Parkoso.

The TikTok video of Daddy Lumba’s uncle denying Afia Schwarzenegger is a member of the Fosuh family is below.

Northern Unity page wrote:

“The question I want to ask is, are you related to them? Some of the family members were saying you’re not related.”

Joe Boakye Yiadom commented:

“So the radio station cannot pay its workers? If so then they should close it.”

Previously, YEN.com.gh reported that Afia Schwarzenegger vowed to start a GoFundMe to help support Odo Broni and her children.

The pledge arrived amid a dispute over who should be declared Daddy Lumba’s legal wife and, consequently, the successor to his estate.

I’m qualified to be Ghana’s Chief Justice

0

Chief Justice nominee, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has affirmed his qualifications and readiness to assume the position of Chief Justice, addressing claims that his nomination was politically motivated.

During his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, November 10, 2025, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie rejected suggestions that his nomination was a reward for favouring President John Dramani Mahama during the 2013 election petition.

He emphasised his impartiality, noting that he “cuts across all political lineage.”

“The President must have his reason. I don’t know that. I believe I qualify for the position of Chief Justice. I think I deserve that position. I have what it takes to lead the judiciary,” he said.

His vetting comes in the wake of the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. The Minority in Parliament had earlier resisted the vetting process, citing pending court cases related to her removal. The minority later boycotted the vetting and rejected his nomination.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s statements underscore his assertion that his nomination is based on merit and capability rather than political affiliation.

Kotoko coach Zito hails discipline after defeating Hearts of Oak

0

By Rihana Adam, GNA

Accra, Nov. 10, GNA – Kumasi Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito praised his players’ discipline and commitment after their narrow 1-0 win over arch-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak in the Ghana Premier League on Sunday.

Morifing Donzo’s strike from the penalty spot in the first half was enough to give Asante Kotoko all three points.

“Before the beginning of the league, we set our target to win the league again. Winning today is one of those games that keep us on track, and I’m very happy that we have been able to maintain our unbeaten record, especially against Hearts of Oak and away from home,” coach Zito told reporters after the match.

He added that the victory was particularly meaningful for fans in Kumasi.

“I owed Kumasi supporters two points because I drew with Heart of Lions earlier in the season, so I’m happy I was able to get two goals today to make up for that,” he said.

Zito credited hard work and a positive attitude for the team’s success but admitted missed chances in the first half could have been costly.

“Look at the chances we created in the first half, if we had taken them, the scoreline would have been different. My next focus in training will be goal scoring because we wasted too many chances.”

He described matches between Kotoko and Hearts as emotionally charged encounters.

“Hearts and Kotoko games are never easy. The tension is high from the players and coaches alike. But once we managed to score one, that’s enough for three points, and I’m satisfied with that,” the experienced gaffer stated.

On attacking options, Zito said Kotoko were coping without a key striker. “We’ve scored four goals in Amoah’s absence, and all came from midfielders. As a coach, when you have a problem, you must find a solution. For now, we have only one striker, and he is still adapting to our style of play.”

Zito urged fans to remain patient as Kotoko searches for more glory.

“Kotoko supporters should be patient and keep supporting us, without them, there is no Kotoko. Our focus is to stay consistent and qualify to get back to Africa,” he said.

Minority rejects CJ nominee Baffoe-Bonnie, boycotts vetting

0

The vetting of Chief Justice nominee Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie descended into heated partisan exchanges on Monday, culminating in a full walkout by the Minority members of the Appointments Committee.

The Minority, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, announced their decision to boycott the process, insisting that the nomination itself is illegitimate because of unresolved legal challenges relating to the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

“We are registering that we reject the nomination, and the record should reflect that the report of the vetting be a Majority report,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin declared before exiting the chamber.

According to the Minority, multiple cases currently before the Supreme Court, High Court, and ECOWAS Court make it improper for Parliament to proceed with the consideration of a new Chief Justice. They argue that continuing the process undermines judicial independence and prejudges matters that are still under adjudication.

But the walkout was preceded by a tense confrontation between the two leaders in Parliament.

Clash Between Majority and Minority Leaders

The disagreement erupted when Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga objected to Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s attempt to make opening remarks during the vetting session. Mr. Ayariga maintained that issues concerning the nomination had already been debated in Parliament, and further commentary was unnecessary.

The tension escalated when Mr. Afenyo-Markin described Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as a “disputed Chief Justice nominee,” a characterisation Mr. Ayariga rejected outright. The Majority Leader insisted the remark was inappropriate for a vetting session and demanded an apology and retraction, saying the committee was “not a courtroom.”

In response, Mr. Afenyo-Markin accused the Majority Leader of trying to muzzle dissenting views and diminish the Minority’s role in the constitutional process. He reiterated concerns that Justice Torkornoo’s removal was shrouded in “opaque” circumstances — a comment that again drew objections from Mr. Ayariga.

Deepening Divisions

The exchanges underscored deepening partisan rifts over the appointment of a new Chief Justice, with both sides trading accusations of bad faith and constitutional impropriety.

The Majority proceeded with the vetting despite the boycott, but the Minority has made it clear that they regard the process as flawed, unconstitutional, and politically tainted.

Their walkout sets the stage for a possible showdown when the Appointments Committee submits its report to the full House.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s vetting suspended amidst confusion

0

Proceedings were temporarily suspended during the vetting of Chief Justice nominee Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, following misunderstandings among Members of Parliament (MPs).

The vetting session began around 11:45 a.m., but was delayed after a heated exchange between the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, and Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

The disagreement arose when Afenyo-Markin referred to the nominee as a “disputed nominee,” accusing the Majority caucus of acting in bad faith during the vetting process. Ayariga objected, describing the remark as inappropriate and politically charged.

In response, Afenyo-Markin insisted that the Minority was exercising its right to hold Parliament accountable, arguing that expressing reservations about the nomination was legitimate and necessary, especially given concerns about political motivations behind the process.

The suspension allowed tempers to cool before proceedings resumed.

Ghana’s courts inundated with cases

0

Chief Justice nominee, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has expressed concern over the growing backlog of cases in the country’s courts, describing the situation as overwhelming and a major source of delay in justice delivery.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, November 10, 2025, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie said the courts are “inundated” with cases, leading to congestion and inefficiency.

He assured that measures will be introduced under his leadership to address the situation.

He noted that while the Judicial Service has opened more courts to ease congestion, the problem persists because the number of cases continues to rise across the country.

“We must identify what causes the backlog and delays. Courtroom litigation volume has increased. Now people litigate practically over everything. People sue over everything, intellectual property, and everything.

He added, “So the courts are inundated. We tried to solve that problem by opening more courts. The more courts are opened, the more litigations come up. Now, courts in Adenta have more cases than courts in the Law Court Complex.

“The threshold for every court should be about 250. At the last count, the High Court One in Adenta had 849 cases, for one court. So the cases are many. You will be dealing with one case, and two more are added.”

His vetting follows the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. The Minority in Parliament had earlier resisted the vetting process, citing pending court cases challenging her removal.

Ghana must ban the importation of soaps, toothpaste and others

0

File photo of a toothpaste File photo of a toothpaste

Ghana must, at the soonest possible time, ban or restrict the importation of soaps, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoos, toothpicks, and allied products. We need jobs in our country for our own citizens. While the NPP’s One-District-One-Factory and President John Mahama’s 24-Hour Economy are all laudable to an extent, both of these programs are limited in scope and returns.

Of course, those only interested in the politics of the Party would invariably throw diatribes my way. Nevertheless, I dare say—how many genuinely sustained jobs resulted from these two programmes?

Some might say President Mahama’s “24-Hour Economic Program is still in its infancy”—and it is exactly these apologists, rather than encouraging our political leaders to FORCE themselves into a very serious thinking mood and leapfrog our economy, who have helped us become a stagnant society with very few reaching their potential, because we refuse to expand our national economy beyond the “business as usual.”

One of the ways that we can create small-scale manufacturing businesses and create jobs in the process is to BAN the importation of toothpastes, soaps, hair shampoos, toothpicks, and allied products.

There is no reason why, after so many decades of independence, Ghana cannot have a LOCAL SOAP MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY owned by Ghanaians. It makes no sense that to this day, we continue to import toothpastes. What is even more annoying is that Ghana imports toothpicks from China, Thailand, Bangladesh, and India.

The private sector can do much to reverse the massive exportation of jobs from Ghana, but we cannot do it without our government—at the federal and local level—creating the ENABLING macro-economic environment. This is crucial. INDUSTRY and our ACADEMIA, too, must play their part.

If the Government of Ghana plays its part and bans or restricts the importation of soaps, for example, is our industry ready to DEVELOP the best QUALITY soaps—well-formulated, functionally superior products—when compared to the imports?

Thank you, and Onyankopong bless you.

He added that earning the awards would serve as a validation for his fans and the hard work they put into supporting him.

“My fans will be happy. And the award, if I want it, I want it for the fans. It is a validation for them. My own validation is in the music I compose,” he said.

He emphasised that while awards are meaningful, his primary focus remains on creative integrity and the connection he shares with his audience.

Paul Baffoe-Bonnie dismisses political links

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is Chief Justice nominee Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is Chief Justice nominee

Chief Justice nominee Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has rejected suggestions that his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama is a political reward linked to the 2013 election petition.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, November 10, 2025, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie said he could not speak to the president’s motivations but maintained that his judicial record alone justifies the nomination.

“I wouldn’t know what goes on in the president’s mind since I’m not there. But I would be disappointed if my only qualification for the Chief Justice nomination were that I voted for the president in 2013. That is on a lighter note, but I believe I am qualified for the position,” he stated.

He highlighted his extensive experience on the bench, noting that he has served on the Supreme Court for 17 years.

“To say I am the best-qualified person in the Supreme Court now, I would say that. The person who served nearest to me has been there for 10 years, another from 2005, and others from 2019 and 2020. So, I believe I qualify for the position,” he indicated.

Afenyo-Markin’s ‘disputed Chief Justice nominee’ comment triggers pushback at vetting

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination has attracted public interest, with sections of the public and civil society linking the appointment to political considerations.

The vetting process is expected to assess his track record, judicial philosophy, and suitability to lead the country’s judiciary.

If approved by Parliament, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie will replace former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who was removed from office earlier this year.

SML sues Special Prosecutor over seizure of equipment

Kissi Agyebeng is the Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng is the Special Prosecutor

Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML) has filed a lawsuit against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), accusing the anti-corruption body of unlawfully confiscating its servers and equipment during a raid on June 10, 2025.

In a writ filed at the High Court in Accra and sighted by GhanaWeb, SML is seeking an order for the immediate return of all items seized from its Tema office.

The company argues that the confiscation has crippled its operations, particularly its ability to carry out revenue assurance duties.

SML is also demanding general damages of GH¢20 million for what it describes as the “unlawful detention” of critical assets, including servers, SAN storage systems, the proprietary SML Nova Mineral Analyzer and Scale, CCTV systems, computers, laptops, external hard drives, mobile phones, and printers.

The raid, which SML described as “militarized,” was part of the OSP’s ongoing investigation into the company’s contract with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

According to SML’s statement of claim, the seizure disrupted its secure communication network, cutting off real-time data flow from 25 depots to its central data centre.

“The confiscation caused the immediate collapse of the secure communication chain linking all twenty-five depots to the central data center, resulting in the total cessation of real-time data flow,” the company stated.

SML petitions President Mahama to reconsider GRA contract cancellation

This legal action marks another chapter in the escalating standoff between SML and the OSP.

SML has consistently maintained that it fulfilled its contractual obligations with the GRA and that the OSP’s actions are legally and procedurally flawed.

At a recent press briefing, SML’s legal representative, Cephas Boyuo, challenged the legitimacy of the OSP’s approach.

“The OSP is a fact-finding institution. Its mandate is to investigate alleged corruption and present evidence before a court of competent jurisdiction. It cannot turn itself into a judge – and that is what the OSP has done,” Boyuo said.

He further accused the OSP of prematurely casting judgment on individuals and creating a public perception of wrongdoing.

The Ghana Association of Savings and Loans Companies (GHASALC) has officially launched the 2025 GHASALC Industry Games under the theme “Building Bonds Beyond Banking.”

The annual sporting event seeks to foster teamwork, wellness, and collaboration among players in Ghana’s savings and loans sector as well as institutions across the broader non-bank financial industry.

The initiative offers participants an opportunity to relieve stress, promote physical fitness, and enhance overall employee well-being, while also building trust, friendships, and professional networks within the financial ecosystem.

This year’s games are scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at the Elwak Sports Stadium in Accra, with Bayport Savings and Loans serving as the event’s headline sponsor.

Speaking at the official media launch in Accra, Akwasi Aboagye, Managing Director of Bayport Savings and Loans, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to making the games a permanent fixture on the industry’s calendar.

“We want to use this platform to nurture impactful and inclusive growth within the sector,” Aboagye stated. “Bayport is committed to ensuring that the Industry Games are not just a one-off event, but a lasting tradition that promotes unity and collaboration.”

The GHASALC Industry Games, which were suspended in 2017 due to unforeseen challenges, are making a comeback with renewed enthusiasm and broader participation.

This year’s edition will feature a variety of activities including soccer, volleyball, draughts, Ludo, sack races, penalty shootouts, musical chairs, spoon relays, and other fun, competitive games designed to encourage teamwork and camaraderie.

Comprehensive plans for a successful event

Chairman of the 2025 GHASALC Industry Games Planning Committee, Jacob Idan, outlined a detailed roadmap to ensure a successful event.

He explained that the program has been designed to deliver a balance of physical activity, networking, and collaboration. “By the end of the games, we expect all participants to have engaged in active bonding, rigorous exercise, and meaningful professional interaction,” he said.

In his remarks, Mr. Tweneboah Koduah Boakye, CEO of the Ghana Association of Savings and Loans Companies, expressed gratitude to Bayport for partnering with GHASALC to make the 2025 Games possible.

He commended the industry for its resilience amid economic headwinds, digital transformation, and regulatory reforms, noting that despite these challenges, savings and loans companies continue to serve millions of Ghanaians and support the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Boakye confirmed that all 26 savings and loans companies and 11 finance houses have registered to participate in the 2025 edition.

“The GHASALC Industry Games will continue to serve as a platform for fostering camaraderie, teamwork, and networking among players in Ghana’s financial sector,” he said.

A celebration of unity and wellness

As the countdown begins to the 2025 GHASALC Industry Games, anticipation is building across the financial sector. The event promises not only a day of spirited competition but also a celebration of unity, wellness, and shared purpose — truly living up to its theme: “Building Bonds Beyond Banking.”

Jacob Zuma’s daughter denies terrorism charges as her trial starts

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla has said the state's case against her is weak Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla has said the state’s case against her is weak

The daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related charges at the start of her trial in the port city of Durban.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla is being prosecuted over comments she made on social media four years ago during deadly protests in South Africa following the arrest of her father.

A week of anarchy in several parts of the country in July 2021, including looting and arson, left at least 300 people dead and caused damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (£2.2bn).

Zuma-Sambudla, 43, has been accused of fuelling this unrest and faces charges of incitement to commit terrorism and public violence.

The protests were concentrated in the provinces of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and followed the former president’s arrest for disobeying a court order to testify at an inquiry into allegations of corruption while he was in power.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has always denied the charges against her, with her lawyer previously labelling the state’s case as weak.

She has also repeatedly said the charges against her were an attempt to settle political scores with her father after he started his own political party and campaigned against the African National Congress (ANC).

This was echoed by the Jacob Zuma Foundation, which said the case was an “abuse of power” and a “systematic campaign of political and familial harassment” against the former president and his family.

A handful of supporters from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other party leaders attended the hearings inside.

P.K. Sarpong, a well-known NPP activist, in a Facebook post, described Dr. Acheampong as a “fake neutral” who had been rewarded for his criticism of the Nana Akufo-Addo administration.

“Dr Theo Acheampong has been appointed by President Mahama to the Finance Ministry as Technical Advisor. All the noise was for an appointment. It is always about interest, not Ghana. Fake neutral,” he wrote.

Did Theo Acheampong confirm his appointment?

Dr. Acheampong initially confirmed the appointment in a Facebook post, which was later deleted.

In the now-deleted post, he disclosed that he would serve as the technical advisor to the newly established Fiscal Council of the Finance Ministry.

He further stated that his role would focus on establishing and strengthening the Fiscal Council, ensuring value for money in public spending, and managing energy and extractives, including petroleum revenue, among other areas.

“In our highly polarized environment, I know that some colleagues, acquaintances, and friends may see this as a surprise, be concerned, and even skeptical. For others, it is a logical next step,” he wrote in the now-deleted Facebook post.

“For me, it’s better to bring my 15+ years of experience across multiple jurisdictions in public finance, energy, and extractives into the room to shape policy directly,” he added.

Bawumia unveils blueprint to empower NPP grassroots ahead of Presidential primaries

0

By Daniel Agbesi Latsu, GNA

Kadjebi (O/R), Nov. 10, GNA – Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President, has outlined a comprehensive plan to revitalise the New Patriotic Party (NPP), pledging to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures and ensure greater inclusivity ahead of the January 31, 2026, presidential primaries.

Addressing nearly 700 delegates at Asato Community Centre in the Akan Constituency of the Oti Region, Dr Bawumia presented what he described as a “new deal for the NPP grassroots,” anchored on empowerment, transparency, and equitable participation.

The former Vice President said the NPP’s electoral strength laid in its polling station executives and constituency-level coordinators, who deserved structured support and recognition for their commitment to the party’s success.

“Our grassroots are the lifeblood of the NPP. We must build a system that recognises their sacrifices, supports their welfare, and gives them a direct stake in governance,” he said.

Dr Bawumia’s blueprint focuses on five key areas aimed at deepening internal cohesion and improving electoral outcomes.

He pledged to establish a structured welfare database to support polling station executives and electoral area coordinators.

The system, he said, would undergo quarterly reviews to ensure fairness, inclusiveness, and transparency.

Dr Bawumia announced that a proportion of national appointments—including positions such as CEOs, Ambassadors, Ministers, and Deputy Ministers—would be allocated to constituencies across the country, forming part of his decentralisation drive.

This measure, estimated to create about 3,000 opportunities, was expected to strengthen the connection between government and the grassroots.

Dr Bawumia proposed the introduction of a “Constituency Budget” system to empower local areas to directly address development priorities. This approach, he explained, would shift national planning from a top-down model to one driven by local needs.

To maintain unity and pre-empt discontent, he announced plans to institutionalised regular constituency-level town hall meetings. These forums would provide space to identify and resolve internal challenges before they escalated.

The former Vice President also vowed to reform the party’s election financing model by ensuring campaign funds were transferred directly into official constituency accounts. That, he said, would eliminate intermediaries, promote accountability, and guarantee that every cedi was used to support mobilisation efforts.

Dr Bawumia described the proposed reforms as a “paradigm shift” that would make the NPP stronger, fairer, and more responsive to its members’ needs.

Mr Kofi Adjei Ntim, former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kadjebi, commended Dr Bawumia for his commitment to empowering the party’s grassroots.

He said the former Vice President had demonstrated vision, humility, and dedication to the NPP’s progress, qualities that made him well-placed to lead the party into the 2028 elections.

Mr Ntim therefore urged delegates to rally behind Dr Bawumia to consolidate the NPP’s unity and build on the gains made over the years.

Dr Bawumia was accompanied by Nana Akomea, former MP for Okaikoi South and Bawumia’s Campaign Team member, Dr Joshua Makubu and DSP Daniel Machator (Rtd), both former Oti Regional Ministers, former MDCEs, former PCs, among others.

The former Vice President’s campaign continues to gather momentum as the NPP prepares for its presidential primaries early next year.

Minority boycotts vetting of Chief Justice nominee Baffoe-Bonnie

0

The Minority in Parliament has rejected the vetting of Chief Justice nominee, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, by the Appointments Committee, citing ongoing court cases and procedural concerns surrounding his nomination.

Led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority rejected the nomination outright, arguing that the process lacked legitimacy due to unresolved legal issues relating to the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

“We are registering that we reject the nomination, and the record should reflect that the report of the vetting be a Majority report,” the Minority Leader stated during proceedings.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination follows the controversial dismissal of Justice Torkornoo, a move the Minority and several civil society groups have described as unconstitutional and politically motivated. The group maintained that proceeding with the vetting while multiple court cases on the matter remain pending undermines judicial independence and the rule of law.

Tensions flared earlier during the vetting session on Monday, November 10, when a heated exchange erupted between the Minority Leader and the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga.

The dispute began when Mr. Ayariga objected to Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s attempt to make his opening remarks, arguing that the issue had already been addressed in Parliament when the Minority Leader previously filed a motion on the matter.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin had earlier referred to Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as a “disputed Chief Justice nominee,” a comment that immediately drew objection from the Majority Leader. Mr. Ayariga insisted that the vetting was not a courtroom proceeding and demanded that the Minority Leader withdraw the remark and apologise.

In response, Mr. Afenyo-Markin accused the Majority Leader of acting in bad faith and attempting to stifle the Minority’s right to freely express their views during the vetting process. He further criticised the circumstances surrounding the removal of Justice Torkornoo, describing them as “opaque”—a remark that again drew objection from Mr. Ayariga.

The confrontation underscored the deep partisan tensions in Parliament and the growing political controversy surrounding the vetting of the acting Chief Justice.

Minority boycotts vetting of Chief Justice nominee Paul Baffoe-Bonnie

0

The Minority in Parliament has announced a boycott of the vetting of Chief Justice nominee, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, by the Appointments Committee, citing unresolved court cases and procedural irregularities surrounding his nomination.

Led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the caucus declared that it does not recognise the legitimacy of the ongoing vetting process.

The Effutu Member of Parliament argued that the vetting should not proceed while legal challenges related to the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo are still before the courts.

“We are registering that we reject the nomination, and the record should reflect that the report of the vetting be a Majority report,” the Minority Leader stated during proceedings.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination and vetting follow the controversial dismissal of Justice Torkornoo, which the Minority and several civil society organisations have criticised as unconstitutional and politically influenced.

According to the Minority, proceeding with the vetting despite pending court cases undermines judicial independence and the rule of law.

The boycott marks the latest in a series of parliamentary protests over the handling of the Chief Justice succession, sparking intense public debate over the balance between executive authority and judicial autonomy in Ghana.

Minority defends walkout from Chief Justice nominee’s vetting

0

The Minority in Parliament has defended its decision to walk out of the vetting of Chief Justice nominee Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, insisting the move was based on principle.

Addressing an emergency press conference shortly after the walkout, MP for Asante Akim Central and member of the Appointments Committee, Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, said the Minority’s action was to protest what it sees as procedural unfairness and ongoing legal matters related to the nomination process.

Read also: Minority boycotts vetting of Chief Justice nominee Paul Baffoe-Bonnie

According to him, the decision was a collective one by the Minority caucus.

“I think it is the decision of the entire Minority that our point is well made. At the end of the day, on the matter of principle and what has transpired, there are matters pending, some before ECOWAS, some before other courts, and we have not exhausted them. We think that until those processes are exhausted, it is not right for us to vet another Chief Justice,” he said.

Mr Anyimadu-Antwi clarified that the decision was not a personal attack on the nominee.

“Nobody has anything against Justice Baffoe-Bonnie personally, but on the matter of principle, we needed to abstain from this. Since we are going to vote against the process anyway, I don’t think we have to sit in and accommodate this give and take, especially when they have made up their mind,” he stated.

He mentioned what he described as the Majority’s unwillingness to ensure fairness in parliamentary proceedings, saying the Minority’s walkout was an act of protest, not a boycott.

“They have their majority, and in a democracy, we say that the minority will always have a say and the majority will have their way. But that is not what we are witnessing. Therefore, we opted out of the proceedings. It doesn’t mean we have boycotted the vetting; we only voted against the nomination on principle.”

He also rejected suggestions that the walkout was premeditated, describing such claims as untrue.

“That’s not true. If that were the case, we could have just done the press conference and not even come here. We all agreed and had a meeting. Everyone had their questions ready to ask,” he explained.

He said that the Minority had intended to participate fully in the vetting process, describing it as a national duty that transcends party lines.

“He is going to be the Chief Justice of the whole nation, whether you are NPP or NDC, Majority or Minority. It is for all of us to make sure that we get the best for the country. But if they are not allowing us, we don’t see how we can continue,” he said.

NAPO rallies Ashanti NPP leadership to unite behind Dr Bawumia ahead of 2028

The presidential running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 General Elections and former Minister for Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has urged party members to prioritise unity and loyalty as the NPP prepares for its Presidential Primaries.

Dr Opoku Prempeh, affectionately known as Napo, has in recent weeks been holding a series of special meetings with regional and constituency executives of the NPP in the Ashanti Region.

The engagements form part of his efforts to galvanise peace, strengthen cohesion, and reignite confidence among the party’s grassroots as preparations intensify for the 2028 General Elections.

He emphasised that the NPP’s success depends on maintaining internal harmony and a shared focus on the broader mission of recapturing political power.

“We are all members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP: Development in Freedom), and that bond must remain unbroken during and after the Presidential Primaries,” Dr Opoku Prempeh stated.

Dr Opoku Prempeh also urged the regional leadership to throw their full support behind Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, whom he described as the best candidate to lead the NPP to victory in 2028.

He stressed that Dr Bawumia represents continuity, competence, and the renewed energy needed to restore public confidence in the party.

“We cannot afford to let our passion for individual candidates make us lose sight of the greater mission. A strong NPP is one that stands united behind the elephant, regardless of who becomes flagbearer,” he added.

Dr Opoku Prempeh concluded by encouraging all members to remain disciplined and focused, noting that unity of purpose would be the NPP’s greatest asset heading into 2028.

Chief arrested for obstructing NAIMOS taskforce during arrest of galamsey kingpin in Eastern region

0

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested Nana Ogyeahohuo Barima Anum, who claims to be the Chief of Dokokyina, for allegedly interfering with an operation to apprehend a notorious illegal mining kingpin at Besiasi in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region.

According to NAIMOS, the arrest occurred on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at around 4:30 p.m., after the chief reportedly pursued the taskforce in an attempt to disrupt the lawful arrest of Asenso Kwabena, described as a “notorious galamsey kingpin.”

Nana Ogyeahohuo Barima Anum, who was driving a grey Mercedes-Benz ML 350 (registration number GT 870-14), was intercepted, taken into custody, and handed over to the Ghana Police Service. His vehicle has been impounded.

The incident followed a major NAIMOS raid at Besiasi earlier that day, during which Asenso Kwabena was arrested for operating an illegal mining site that severely polluted the Ayensu River, threatening local water sources and ecosystems.

During the operation, the suspect allegedly arrived armed with a pistol and offered a GH¢100,000 bribe to avoid arrest. The NAIMOS taskforce rejected the bribe, seized the cash and equipment, and shut down the illegal mining site before detaining him for questioning.

Environmental journalist Erastus Asare Donkor of the Multimedia Group, who covered the operation, confirmed the events, earning public praise for the taskforce’s integrity.

Authorities say both Nana Ogyeahohuo Barima Anum and Asenso Kwabena are assisting with ongoing investigations. The case is being jointly handled by the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney General’s Office as part of efforts to curb illegal mining and protect natural resources.

NAIMOS officials have reiterated their commitment to enforcing the law without fear or favour, warning that anyone, regardless of social or traditional status, who obstructs lawful operations will face prosecution.

The Ayensuano District remains a key illegal mining hotspot under close monitoring by the national taskforce as the government intensifies its clampdown on galamsey activities across the country.

COP30: Ghana ready to power Africa’s clean energy future

Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah is the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah is the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has called on world leaders to rally behind Ghana and Africa towards the attainment of clean and sustainable energy across the globe.

Speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama at a high-level summit of world leaders at this year’s COP30 in Brazil, he stressed that Africa has the capacity to impact the world’s energy due to its volume of resources.

According to him, the continent is blessed with abundant sun, wind and hydropower potential, which can be effectively deployed to address the global climate crisis which has plagued the world.

As leader of Ghana’s delegation, he therefore called on the hundreds of world leaders present to tap into the natural endowments of the continent to produce the needed transformations in the world’s energy and climate situations.

“The African position is clear. We are not asking for charity. We are asking for partnership in the truest sense,” the minister said.

“We stand ready to be a powerhouse of green energy for the world. But we cannot do it alone. Therefore, on behalf of a continent poised at a pivotal moment in history, I call upon this assembly and our developed partners all over the world: We urge you to match our ambition with your action,” Ghana’s Lands and Acting Environment Minister stressed.

In his speech, Armah-Kofi Buah also added that, now more than ever, there is crucial need for world leaders to walk the talk in global climate financing.

This, he said, will go a long way to help preserve the environment and reduce the adverse impact of climate change in the world.

Ghana signs bilateral debt agreement with Germany

“The climate finance promised for so long must now flow — not just in words — but in predictable investments, concessional investments, and private-sector-leveraged investments that reach the communities who need them most,” the Minister said.

“We need increased ambition for climate finance, with a significant portion dedicated to adaptation, and recognition of Africa’s special circumstances,” Armah-Kofi Buah emphasised.

He stressed on Ghana’s readiness to be a key player in mitigating the climate challenge and called for more collaboration and partnerships.

“Let us leave Belém with a resolve to harness not only finance, but also technology, innovation and artificial intelligence to accelerate justice, equity and shared prosperity.

“From the Volta to the Western shores, Ghana stands ready to power Africa’s clean future,” the minister ended.

COP30 is the world’s largest climate conference, convening global leaders in Belém, Brazil, to accelerate efforts to cut emissions, scale up climate finance and support countries most affected by climate impacts.

The summit serves as a key milestone in advancing the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Ghana is currently being represented by accredited delegates and individuals in Brazil’s northern city of Belém.

The official opening for COP is slated for Monday, November 10, 2025, where more dialogues, climate discourses and negotiations are expected to begin in earnest.

‘You will not attack anyone and walk away while I sit in this committee’ – Ayariga to Afenyo-Markin

Mahama Ayariga (L) has slammed Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin (R) Mahama Ayariga (L) has slammed Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin (R)

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has stated that he will not sit aloof and allow the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, to attack others and go scot-free during the vetting of Chief Justice nominee Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.

He criticised Afenyo-Markin for making comments he described as personal attacks and remarks that impugn the character of others during his submissions.

Baffoe-Bonnie Vetting: ‘You don’t have the right to tell me what to do’ – Ahiafor tells Habib

Ayariga made the remarks on Monday, November 10, 2025, during the vetting of Chief Justice nominee Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, after Afenyo-Markin raised concerns about the vetting process despite pending legal suits filed against the nominee.

According to Ayariga, under Parliament’s Standing Orders, particularly Order 103(f), any matter before the courts should not be discussed in the Chamber.

He argued that the same rule applies during committee sittings if such discussions could influence the outcome of a case or appear biased.

“Our rules are very clear on pending matters, and Order 103(f) states that ‘a motion shall relate to definite issues and not be the subject of an action on which a judicial decision is pending in such a way as may, in the opinion of the Speaker, prejudice the interests of the parties to the action.’

“Mr. Speaker, when you keep saying ‘motion,’ these rules guide proceedings in the Chamber, but they apply to the work of committees as well. The rules are clear: what you can’t do in the Chamber, you cannot do in committees. So, you can’t come here and comment on pending matters in a way that will prejudice the interests of the parties. We even avoid referring to them,” Ayariga argued.

Ayariga acknowledged Afenyo-Markin’s legal background and his experience in parliamentary leadership, noting that he should be well-versed in the rules.

“You are a senior lawyer. You’ve been in this House; you’ve been a Majority Leader and a Minority Leader. You have lived through all the rulings on pending matters, we should stay away from them. The conduct of judges is not for discussion here,” he said.

Ayariga added that Afenyo-Markin had failed to raise legitimate procedural questions that could have been discussed, such as the nomination process and its referral to the committee by the Speaker.

“You have so far not challenged the process of nominating the nominee, submitting the nomination to this House, or the Speaker’s referral of the nominee to this Committee for vetting. Those are legitimate issues you could have raised, but you haven’t.”

“… You can’t just be allowed to run down everybody and walk away because you are Afenyo-Markin. Why? It will not be allowed. This whole issue about you making a preliminary statement, show me a rule in our Standing Orders that gives you, Afenyo-Markin, the right to make preliminary statements. You don’t,” he declared.

Ayariga accused his colleague of abusing the privilege of making opening remarks, turning it into a platform for attacks.

Afenyo-Markin’s ‘disputed Chief Justice nominee’ comment triggers pushback at vetting

“We developed this as a practice where the two leaders may make brief welcoming or general opening remarks. But you have turned it into a press conference platform to attack and impugn people, then walk away unchallenged. I’m saying that today, you will not attack anybody and walk away while I sit in this committee,” Ayariga warned.

Hearts of Oak player who ‘attacked’ referee apologises

Mohammed Hussein confronted referee Reginald after his side's loss to Kotoko Mohammed Hussein confronted referee Reginald after his side’s loss to Kotoko

Accra Hearts of Oak midfielder, Mohammed Hussein has issued a public apology following his aggressive conduct towards referee Reginald Collins Amoah after his team’s 1–0 defeat to Asante Kotoko.

Mawuli Wayo’s equaliser was ruled out for offside by referee Reginald Collins Amoah, a decision that drew heavy criticisms from Hearts of Oak supporters at the stadium.

The decision did not sit well with Hussein, who was seen approaching the officiating officials at the final whistle.

EXPLAINER: Why VAR would have awarded Hearts of Oak’s goal against Kotoko

While police escorted the referees off the pitch, Hussein attempted attack the referee but was blocked by the security.

Hussein in a social media post explained that his actions were born out of frustration, as he felt the referee overlooked fouls committed against him during the match.

He apologised to his teammates, club officials, fans, the referees involved, and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for his behaviour, which he admitted had brought the image of the league into disrepute.

Read the full statement on the apology as shared on Facebook below:

I wish to begin by expressing my deepest gratitude to the supporters of Accra Hearts of Oak, who turned up in their numbers to stand behind the team in our match against Kotoko. Your passion and loyalty mean everything to us, and I am painfully aware that my actions at the end of the game fell short of the respect you deserve.

With a heavy heart, I sincerely apologise to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the referee, my teammates, our cherished supporters, and the wider football community. What happened after the final whistle was unacceptable, and I take full responsibility for my behaviour.

Throughout the game, I felt frustrated and believed I was being persistently fouled without protection from the referees. In that moment of emotion, I allowed frustration to cloud my judgment. Instead of showing restraint and respect, I reacted wrongly, and I regret it deeply. My actions do not reflect who I am as a person, nor the values I hold as a professional footballer.

To the referee involved, I am truly sorry for confronting you in the manner that I did. I respect the difficult role referees play in ensuring fairness, and I humbly ask for your forgiveness for my lapse in judgment. To the GFA, my club, my teammates, and our loyal fans, I promise to learn from this painful experience. I will work harder to remain calm under pressure, to honour the Phobia badge I love and wear, and to uphold the dignity of our beautiful game.

Once again, I offer my heartfelt apologies to everyone affected by my actions. I am committed to making amends and proving, through my conduct going forward, that I have learned from this mistake.

Vetting of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie a travesty of constitutional order

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised strong objections to the vetting of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie for the position of Chief Justice, describing the move as a threat to Ghana’s constitutional order and judicial independence.

In a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, said, “The NPP will witness this travesty, strongly condemn it, and publicly denounce its outcome. The Constitution is the sacred covenant of the Ghanaian people, and we shall never relent in our duty to defend it.”

The NPP said the nomination by the Mahama administration constitutes a “grave breach of constitutional order,” given that the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is still the subject of multiple court cases.

According to the statement, there are seven substantive legal suits currently pending before the Supreme Court, the High Court, and the ECOWAS Court of Justice, challenging the legality and procedure surrounding Justice Torkornoo’s removal.

“It is a cardinal principle of constitutional governance that where the legitimacy of a foundational state action is directly challenged before a competent court, the political branches must exercise restraint until the judiciary has discharged its constitutional mandate,” the statement said.

The NPP further accused the government of showing disregard for judicial due process, warning that proceeding with a new appointment constitutes “a pre-emptive assault on the judicial function.”

The party also raised concerns about what it described as a conflict of interest on the part of the nominee, claiming that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie had previously presided over a case, Assafuah v. Attorney-General, which directly related to the status of the Chief Justice’s office.

“This situation engages the timeless principle of nemo judex in causa sua—that no person shall be a judge in their own cause,” the NPP stated, adding that his involvement and subsequent acceptance of the nomination undermine public confidence in the judiciary.

While acknowledging Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s long service on the bench, the NPP described his acceptance of the nomination as “a gross and detrimental failure of judicial leadership.”

The party also cautioned the Mahama administration against using political power to undermine constitutional principles, saying, “Political majorities are transient, but constitutional principles are eternal.”

The NPP concluded by reaffirming its commitment to defend Ghana’s constitutional democracy and urged all citizens to stand up in defense of the rule of law.

“The Constitution is the sacred covenant of the Ghanaian people, and we shall never relent in our duty to defend it,” the statement said.

Ghanaian film producer and CEO of Kofas Media, Kofi Asamoah, has dismissed long-standing rumours suggesting that some movie producers offer acting roles to individuals based on personal or romantic interests.

Speaking on a cooking show on UTV on November 9, 2025, Kofi clarified that he has never cast anyone in a movie because of an affair or personal attraction.

According to Kofi Asamoah, while he has had romantic experiences on set in the past, such relationships were never linked to casting decisions or professional opportunities.

“I’ve dated someone on set before, but I was immature and didn’t have money. Those I dated on set were women who liked me and confessed their feelings to me. I think it happens for it to be talked about, but I’ve never experienced that.

“I’ve never offered a role to anyone because of an affair or personal interest. Even when I began making films, I never thought about it, not to talk of now that I consider myself successful,” he said.

He stressed that all roles in his productions are based on merit, professionalism, and the value an actor brings to a project, rather than emotional or personal connections.

Kofi Asamoah explained that directors often work repeatedly with certain actors because of the trust, consistency, and creative chemistry built over time, not due to favouritism or bias.

“When you notice a director gives a particular person roles continuously, it might be because the person brings value or shows commitment. When people are reliable, you keep them,” he stated.

He also criticised the culture in Ghana’s film industry, where directors are often accused of bias for working repeatedly with the same actors.

“In Ghana, when you make someone play roles consistently, people say you’re overusing them. We sometimes stifle talent before it fully develops. The more someone grows, they gain experience and become valuable for other roles as well,” he shared.

He further urged the public and industry stakeholders to recognise the professionalism of filmmakers and actors rather than jumping to conclusions about their relationships.

“When people realise you are using a particular person frequently, they start assuming you’re having an affair or being biased. Every director wants to work with people who provide peace and deliver results,” he added.

‘We found it reasonable’ – GFL defends 9% base pay increment

0

Abraham Koomson is the Executive Secretary of the Ghana Federation of Labour Abraham Koomson is the Executive Secretary of the Ghana Federation of Labour

The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has defended Organised Labour’s decision to accept a 9% base pay increment for 2026.

According to him, the increment was a strategic move aimed at protecting workers’ welfare and supporting national economic recovery.

In an interview with GhanaWeb Business, Koomson stated that; “Organised Labour will continue to engage the government to address emerging challenges without waiting for the next negotiation cycle. Having agreed on these terms, we found it reasonable to settle on the 9% increment to support economic growth in the interest of workers and society.”

On Sunday, November 9, 2025, the National Tripartite Committee approved a 9% adjustment to the national minimum wage, increasing it from GH¢19.97 to GH¢21.77.

The new rate takes effect from January 1 to December 31, 2026.

While the announcement has sparked public debate, Koomson clarified that the decision was made in full compliance with legal frameworks governing wage negotiations.

“In determining a wage or salary adjustment for workers, regulations are adhered to in compliance with the law,” he said.

“Under the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921), Section 19, all salary and compensation negotiations for the public sector must be completed by the end of April each year. Similarly, Section 97 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) prescribes the rules of engagement for parties during negotiations,” he added.

Government approves 9% salary raise for public sector

Koomson also criticised the previous administration for failing to negotiate the 2024 base pay as required by law, a lapse he said disrupted the transition process and placed Organised Labour in a difficult position.

“The previous government blatantly refused to negotiate the base pay for 2024 as required by Act 921, thereby unsettling the new administration and putting Organised Labour in a dilemma on how to proceed,” he noted.

Despite these setbacks, Organised Labour successfully secured a 10% adjustment in February 2025 and promptly began negotiations for 2026, guided by principles of fairness and good faith.

“To negotiate in good faith means reasonableness and compliance with Section 97 of Act 651,” Mr. Koomson explained.

During the talks, government representatives assured labour unions of plans to address private sector concerns, including the removal of nuisance taxes.

They also committed to clearing salary arrears and regularising the employment of approximately 150,000 health and education professionals whose recruitment had stalled due to financial constraints.

I Will Always Support Upcoming Talents – Medikal

Medikal

Ghanaian Rapper Medikal, born Samuel Adu Frimpong has pledged his commitment to support upcoming music talents by providing them with the necessary support mechanism to make them shine.

The “Shoulder” hitmaker made this affirmation in a series of posts on X, after ranting on the low level of support in the music industry.

He posted, “I will always put these upcoming boys on as long as their talent is loud. I don’t care; I just wanna see them shine.” In subsequent post, he wrote, “Tag me with some new young cats below, I wanna listen to something fresh…”

Medikal over the course of last week had been ranting on the lack of industry support in the Ghanaian music space, a cancer which has deprived the country’s international relevance over the years, using quite some harsh words on his fellow artistes.

“Ghanaian music would have flown across more and had increment in mileage but y’all bum ass artiste don’t like to collaborate with each other cuz y’all think it’s all about competition. Bum nig**s and (b………)”

Known for blending hip hop with rap and for his intricate wordplay, with lyrics often delivered in both English and his native language, Medikal’s new release “Shoulder” has become a global hit.

He has had a prolific career, with a discography that includes both charting hits and other works.
