Doctor’s Day: Enterprise Group PLC congratulates doctors

0

On the occasion of this year’s Doctors’ Day, the Enterprise Group PLC celebrates the dedication and passion of all doctors, particularly those in Africa and Ghana. Healthcare professionals are the backbone of our well-being, tirelessly working to save lives and provide expert care and guide toward healthier lifestyles.

Today, as we celebrate doctors, we call on all stakeholders to prioritize the needs of doctors and recognize and appreciate them for the critical role they play in our society. Now more than ever, there is a critical need to increase the number of doctors in our communities. According to data from the World Health Organization and other relevant bodies, Ghana’s doctor-to-patient ratio stands at 1:6,355, significantly below the ideal threshold. To achieve adequate coverage of primary healthcare interventions, at least 2.5 health workers (including physicians, nurses, and midwives) per 1,000 people are required. Strengthening our healthcare workforce is essential to improving accessibility and quality of care for all.

While this remains a major challenge, we are plagued with the migration of skilled and trained doctors to the advanced economies. This further impacts the delivery of healthcare in Ghana. We need immediate interventions, otherwise this gap will continue to widen, putting countless lives at risk.

Despite the enormous pressure, our doctors continue to make sacrifices and provide selfless services for our well-being. Their passion is what Enterprise Group PLC is recognizing today as doctors not only heal individuals but also strengthen our communities. We salute their dedication and commitment to building a healthier Ghana.

Enterprise Group PLC and its subsidiaries extend a heartfelt AYEKOO! Your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed and we remain committed to supporting healthcare professionals in every way we can.

NPP 2024 Sene East parliamentary candidate is dead

0

The 2024 Parliamentary Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Sene East constituency, Wudoyim Ibrahim, has died.

The death of the politician, a dedicated member of the party, has been met with shock, even as condolences pour in from across the party and various political circles in the country.

News of his shocking demise was announced on a party platform in the early hours of Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

Details surrounding his demise are, however, yet to be known.

Reacting to the news, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia expressed his deep sadness over Ibrahim’s passing, offering prayers for the repose of his soul as he embarks on his journey to the afterlife.

“I am saddened to hear about the passing of Chairman Wudoyim Ibrahim, who was the NPP 2024 Parliamentary Candidate in Sene East Constituency. May his gentle soul rest in peace,” Dr Bawumia posted on Facebook on April 2, 2025.

Known for his slogans during the electioneering period, “The People’s Choice” and “The Game Changer,” Ibrahim was recognised by those who knew him as a dedicated individual who made a significant impact on the lives of those he encountered.

He was known for his accessibility, regularly engaging with constituents to understand their needs.

Applicants demand Gov’t action on CLOGSAG concerns to prevent another strike

0

Applicants seeking services at the Greater Accra Regional Office of the Births and Deaths Registry have called on the government to meet the demands of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), to prevent another strike.

CLOGSAG initiated a strike on February 20 in protest against the political appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Births and Deaths Registrar.

The strike, which disrupted essential government services, has since been suspended, allowing operations to return to normal.

In an interview with Channel One News, some applicants urged the government to address the association’s concerns promptly.

“The government has to meet their demands because I think they have a legitimate concern. They are saying that CLOGSAG is supposed to appoint the head, but the government has made the appointment instead, which they disagree with. They should sit with the government and negotiate so that the government acts within the laws and resolve this matter amicably.

“When I came here, the concern was that, as a local government, they did not want the government to appoint a political affiliate for them as a head. So, now that they have resumed, I think the government should listen to them and appoint someone who is not politically affiliated.”

Mahama assents to bill abolishing E-Levy, betting tax, others

0

President John Dramani Mahama has signed into law a set of bills designed to eliminate various taxes, such as the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), Betting Tax, and Emissions Tax.
The E-Levy, introduced in 2022 under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, imposed a 1.5% tax on electronic transactions, including mobile money transfers, bank transactions, and online payments.
Although it was later reduced to 1%, the levy remained unpopular, drawing criticism from businesses, consumers, and political

Northern Regional Minister kicks against Bawumia’s kayayei training center project

Ali Adolf John, Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf John, Northern Regional Minister

The Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, has opposed the initiative by former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to establish a training center for Kayayei at Madina, Accra.

According to a report by gbcghanaonline.com, the minister rubbished the concept, arguing that it would only promote migration of young girls from the northern sector to the capital city, Accra.

He indicated that the young girls are needed in their local communities and hence such projects could rather be situated in their hometowns.

“I am strongly against promoting kayayei in Accra because we need our girls at home,” he reiterated.

He indicated that such projects would best serve the purpose if the beneficiaries are within their local communities.

He also noted that the government could cover the cost of training and provide the necessary equipment to support the development of the girls.

The minister further drew from his own experience of augmenting his income with money he made from menial jobs while he was still studying at the technical school.

According to him, he even recruited his peers to join him, and it helped them to raise money to pay their school fees without asking their parents.

“Even I gathered the boys and we worked while still in school. Some of them were even able to pay their school fees to the point that when they go home to visit their parents, they tell them they’re not coming for money because their fees had already been paid; they were only paying their parents a visit,” he said.

His comments fall on the back of the launch of the Kayayei Empowerment Training Centre by former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on May 21, 2024, at Madina in Accra.

Ghana unveils West Africa’s largest floating solar…

0

Accra – Ghana has launched West Africa’s largest floating solar project, marking a significant step towards increasing its renewable energy capacity. The country aims to raise its share of renewable energy from the current 1% to 10% by 2030.

The pioneering 5-megawatt floating solar installation is situated on the Black Volta River and was engineered by Ghanaian engineers from the Bui Power Authority (BPA). This innovative project showcases Ghana’s commitment to leveraging clean energy and reducing its carbon footprint.

The floating solar power plant is a groundbreaking solution that utilises photovoltaic modules on water bodies, optimising land use while enhancing the efficiency of the solar panels.

Additionally, it helps conserve water by reducing evaporation from the surface. This technology can be deployed on ponds, lakes, reservoirs, or other water bodies.

The successful completion of this project aligns with Ghana’s National Energy Plan, supporting the goal of increasing renewable energy penetration by 10% by 2030.

Deputy Director of Renewable Energy at the Bui Power Authority, Peter Acheampong, stated “We have completed the 5-megawatt project, and it is already generating power.”

Acheampong further revealed plans to expand the floating solar project: “There are plans to scale it up to approximately 65 megawatts. At BPA, our expansion efforts are guided by the country’s renewable energy master plan,” he explained.

The Bui Power Authority (BPA) has made remarkable progress in the renewable energy sector. Before the floating solar project, the BPA commissioned its solar farm in 2020, which is generating 50 megawatts of power. The two projects cost US$48 million.

Other Projects

These solar plants are playing a crucial role in diversifying Ghana’s energy mix and increasing its renewable energy production.

Other notable solar power plants successfully commissioned and operational in Ghana include the Kaleo Solar Power Plant (13 megawatts), Lawra Solar Plant (6.5 megawatts), and Navrongo Solar Plant (2.5 megawatts). The three projects cost €50.8 million.

Individuals are increasingly investing in renewable energy. Helios Solar Energy has commissioned Africa’s largest rooftop solar installation, a 16.82-megawatt photovoltaic (PV) plant financed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank Group at a cost of $17 million.

Future Plans

The Bui Power Authority (BPA) has designated six locations for future solar projects: Bawku, Yendi, Tumu, Sawla, Buipe, and Zebilla, all in the northern part of the country.

Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, outlined Ghana’s strategic focus on renewable energy, emphasising the development of solar, wind, and mini-hydro projects to meet the nation’s growing energy demands.

“To support our expanding economy and drive sustainable development, Ghana is prioritising solar, wind, and mini-hydro projects as part of our broader energy transition plan,” Jinapor stated.

He highlighted that increasing renewable energy consumption is essential for lowering the country’s carbon footprint, improving energy access, and fostering industrial growth.

“We will establish the Renewable Energy and Green Transition Fund. This fund will support research and development of home-grown green technologies, provide solar-powered solutions for various sectors, and ease the financial burden of electricity tariffs on state institutions.”

He added, “Solar, wind, and mini-hydro present immense opportunities for Ghana to meet its energy needs while minimising the environmental impact of fossil fuels.” He also noted that Ghana is well-positioned to harness these resources, with abundant solar energy potential, a vast coastline ideal for wind power, and multiple rivers suitable for mini-hydro power generation.

2025 TGMAs: Some BHIM natives are not cool with me after I endorsed King Paluta

0

Entertainment pundit, MC Portfolio Entertainment pundit, MC Portfolio

Entertainment pundit MC Portfolio, has disclosed that his vocal support for King Paluta for the 2025 TGMA Artiste of the Year has caused tensions with some members of Stonebwoy’s BHIM Nation.

It can be recalled that in an earlier interview, he argued that King Paluta’s achievements in 2024 are unparalleled, making him the most deserving candidate for Artiste of the Year at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).

According to him, no other artiste in Ghana had such a consistent reign at the top of the charts in 2024.

However, according to Portfolio, his comments have put him at loggerheads with some core fans of Stonebwoy.

“My relationship with a lot of people in the BHIM camp has been slightly severed because of my views. I could really feel the displeasure in the faces of people,” he said.

He also noted that while he remains a strong supporter of Stonebwoy, he refuses to align blindly with fanaticism.

“I thought I could maintain my positive relationship with Stonebwoy without necessarily trying to push an agenda even when I don’t side with it. I didn’t know this was how the fanaticism was going to move.

“So, it means that being a BHIM native, you have to inherit all the enemies around Stonebwoy. I can’t do that. I don’t inherit enemies. I just want to respect my relationship with Stonebwoy and keep myself out of this fanaticism,” he stated.

Despite the pushback, MC Portfolio maintained that King Paluta’s impact in 2024 through chart-topping hits like ‘Aseda,’ ‘Makoma,’ and ‘Apicki’ makes him the clear choice for Artiste of the Year.

“This year is about hard work and impact, and no one has worked harder or made more impact in 2024 than King Paluta,” he insisted.

Unemployed environmental health officers cry out amid cholera outbreak across the country

The Unposted Environmental Health Officers and Assistants Association of Ghana is shocked at the alarming incident rate of cholera outbreak in the country, claiming many lives since October 24, 2024.

In a statement, the association extended its condolences to affected families, calling on the government to adopt stringent measures to curtail the spread of the disease.

Blaming years of neglect in the environmental health sector, the association said the poor sanitation conditions in the country contributes to the surge in communicable and preventable diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and malaria.

They criticised the government’s failure to recruit trained environmental health officers, leaving thousands of graduates unemployed for over four years.

“For over four and a half years, graduates from the three schools of hygiene in Ghana have been left unemployed, despite our extensive training and readiness to contribute to the nation’s environmental health,” the statement emphasised.

According to a report on channelnews.com, the group attributed the crisis to government’s neglect and lack of political will to strengthen the environmental health units into a full-fledged authority.

Without proper investment in sanitation and waste management, they warned, Ghana would continue to experience recurring disease outbreaks.

They acknowledged the recent proposal by the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development to upgrade the Environmental Health and Sanitation Directorate into an authority but urged swift action rather than mere political rhetoric.

“This shouldn’t be one of those political talks,” they cautioned, calling for the immediate employment of unposted environmental health officers to reinforce the overstretched workforce in the field.

Reaffirming their commitment to improving environmental health standards, the association called for swift intervention from the government to improve sanitation systems to avert public health emergencies.

Rising costs of imports, others cause of cedi depreciation

0

IMANI Africa president, Franklin Cudjoe IMANI Africa president, Franklin Cudjoe

Policy think tank, IMANI Africa, has attributed the continuous depreciation of Ghana’s local currency to high import levels and increasing inflationary pressures.

According to the President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, the government must prioritize boosting the country’s foreign exchange reserves.

He pointed out high exports, attracting Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs), and remittances as key areas where the government could generate revenue for the state.

In a report cited by GhanaWeb Business, Franklin Cudjoe emphasised that promoting agriculture and manufacturing is crucial to strengthening the cedi.

He stated that, “The cedi’s continued depreciation, currently at 15.53 to the dollar, is raising the cost of imports and increasing inflationary pressures. To stabilize the currency, the government must focus on boosting foreign exchange reserves through increased exports, foreign direct investment (FDI), and remittances.”

“Reducing import dependency by promoting local production, particularly in agriculture and manufacturing, will also be key. Encouraging non-traditional exports such as processed cocoa, textiles, and tech services can help Ghana diversify its revenue base and strengthen its external position,” he added.

As of Wednesday, April 2, 2025, the cedi is trading at GH¢16.00 to the dollar.

The pound is trading at GH¢20.60 at major forex bureaus across the country, while the euro is trading at GH¢17.40 on the retail market.

It’s finished – Finance Minister reacts to Mahama’s assents to abolishing e-levy, betting tax, and others

0

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has reacted to the abolition of key taxes, including the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) and the betting tax, with a brief but emphatic statement.

In a post on X on Wednesday, April 2, he simply wrote, “It is finished,” signaling the completion of the legislative process to repeal the controversial levies.

President John Dramani Mahama fulfilled a major campaign promise by signing into law a set of amended bills that abolish the betting tax, E-Levy, emissions tax, and other levies earlier today.

The signing, which took place in his office, marks a significant milestone in his administration’s efforts to ease the financial burden on Ghanaians and foster economic growth.

The removal of these taxes was a core pledge in the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s manifesto, aimed at reducing the cost of living and encouraging business expansion.

The E-Levy, introduced in 2022 by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, imposed a 1.5% tax on electronic transactions, including mobile money transfers, bank transfers, and online payments.

It was widely criticized by the public and the business community, who argued that it stifled digital transactions and placed an unnecessary burden on citizens.

Parliament officially passed the bill to repeal the levy on Wednesday, March 26, paving the way for its removal.

The decision to scrap these taxes has been met with widespread approval, with many Ghanaians celebrating the move as a step towards financial relief.

Supporters of the repeal argue that eliminating these levies will promote digital transactions, stimulate economic activity, and improve disposable income for households and businesses.

African Govts Must Invest In Caribbean Trade Routes – Ayorkor Botchwey

0

Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey

The Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has advised African governments to invest in trade routes between Africa and the Caribbean.

She disclosed that there are many trade opportunities that can be harnessed between countries in the Caribbean and Africa.

“If you take between Caribbean and Africa, it is just the Atlantic that separates us. There is so much we can do together, yet there is no air links and no maritime links”, she said at the Leadership Conversation 2025 organised by the University of Gold Coast.

According to her, a direct trade link will increase activities between Africa and the Caribbean, generating millions of dollars that can be used to develop the continent.

“If you take a direct flight from Africa to the Caribbean and part of it, it’s just about 6 hours. In some cases it is just about 5 hours, but there are no flights”, she said.

She observed that the route has become expensive because African governments have not assess its benefit, hence neglected trade opportunities from the Caribbean.

“To access the Caribbean from Africa, you have to go through Europe and the Americas before you get to the Caribbean. In doing so trade is going to be difficult. We need to work on it first as Africans,” she said.

Madam Botchewy emphasized the need for African countries to work collectively under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to expand trade with the Caribbean.

She stressed the need for African governments to invest in transport infrastructure to make the implementation of AfCFTA feasible.

“When I was the Foreign Affairs Minister and we were negotiating the AfCFTA, there was the need for ease of doing business through transportation. We need rails, we need roads, maritime, we need air transport to connect African countries,” she said.

She cautioned that without transport infrastructure it will be difficult to harness the projected benefits from the AfCFTA.

Accravaganza: Guinness official cited in DJ Lord’s allegation against Stonebwoy

0

Contrary to the notion that Stonebwoy’s management ordered DJ Lord OTB to stop playing Shatta Wale’s songs at the 2025 Accravaganza, the DJ’s manager has clarified that it was rather a third party that relayed the information to them.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz with Andy Dosty, Joojo, DJ Lord’s manager explained that they played two Shatta Wale songs back-to-back before receiving a message from a top official of Guinness Ghana, the sponsors of the programme.

“So I think we played like two Shatta Wale songs like back-to-back, I actually saw a lady walk up. I know the lady, not personally, but I know who the lady is,” he said.

According to Joojo, the lady in question relayed a message from Stonebwoy’s management expressing their dissatisfaction with the back-to-back play of Shatta Wale songs.

“The lady walked up to the stage with her phone and opened a chat that, Stonebwoy’s management is not happy with the Shatta Wale back-to-back, so if we can minimise it,” he noted.

Joojo stated that he whispered the message to DJ Lord, and they adjusted their set accordingly.

“So she relayed information to me and I whispered to Lord that this is what has been relayed to me,” he explained.

Asked how many Shatta Wale songs they had played before receiving the message, Joojo stated: “It was two, back to back. I was there, I saw everything. He played two songs and that was all.”

Meanwhile, Vida Adutwumwaa Boateng, the Head of Communications at Burniton Music Group, has denied claims that Stonebwoy’s camp ordered DJ Lord to stop playing Shatta Wale’s songs either directly or through any Guinness official.

“I have dared DJ Lord to produce the name of whoever told him that we were ordering him to stop playing Shatta Wale’s song,” she said.

On April 1, 2025, DJ Lord OTB took to his social media handles to recount how a management member of Stonebwoy ordered him to stop playing Shatta Wale’s song at the Accravaganza programme when he was on duty as disc jockey.

In the post, he wrote: During my DJ set alongside Merqury Quaye, I included some essential tracks of Shatta Wale into our playlist , an artist whose music forms the backbone of any Ghanaian musical experience. The crowd’s energy confirmed we were on the right track until a top Board official of the show intervened. At the behest of Stonebwoy’s management, I was instructed to cease playing Shatta Wale’s music immediately.”

The organisers and the sponsors of the event are yet to respond to the allegations made by DJ Lord and his manager.

With the eight percent withholding tax amounting to GH₵232,659,211.77, Investcom will receive a net dividend of GH₵2,675,580,935.31.

The increase in dividend payouts follows MTN Ghana’s strong financial performance in 2024, with revenue reaching GH₵17.9 billion.

The company’s dividend payout represents 80.26 per cent of profit after tax, reinforcing its commitment to rewarding shareholders. Despite reducing its stake, Investcom Consortium Holdings S.A. remains the dominant shareholder, while SSNIT has slightly increased its stake, reflecting growing local interest in the telecom giant.

At the AGM, MTN Ghana announced a final dividend payment of 24 pesewas per share, subject to shareholder approval, with disbursement set for April 16, 2025. The company’s total dividend for 2024 stands at 30.5 pesewas per share, translating to GH₵4.0 billion, which represents 80 per cent of the company’s profit after tax of GH₵5.0 billion. This marks a 35.6 per cent increase in dividend per share compared to 2023.

MTN Ghana continues to hold a strong position in Ghana’s stock market, offering significant returns to both institutional and individual investors.

I’m not a pimp, there’s nothing lucrative about it

Rapper and entreprenuer, D-Black Rapper and entreprenuer, D-Black

Popular rapper and entrepreneur D-Black has shot down speculations that he is involved in pimping under the guise of his nightclub.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV, the owner of the Oasis Pool and Shisha Lounge in Accra, when asked about his alleged involvement in pimping ladies, boldly stated, “It’s not possible. There’s nothing lucrative about being a pimp in Ghana.”

D-Black went on to explain that his involvement in the businesses is due to his passion for hospitality.

“I have a club, a lounge and a restaurant. I love hospitality. It’s just a business that I love and enjoy, and I’m very passionate about it.

“Music was a talent I had, and I was passionate about hospitality. So, I’m in this business because I love it. It has been able to take care of me and my family and everybody around me for so many years, and that’s the only reason I do it,” he said.

He also cited how his mother had been involved in the hospitality sector throughout her working life and how he was just following in her footsteps.

“That’s what my mother did for 30 years straight; my mother was in the hospitality business from the day she started working till the day she retired. So, I took over the business from my mother,” he added.

‘Mysterious flights info was for answers, not for me to be questioned’

0

President John Dramani Mahama (L) and Rev John Ntim Fordjour (R) President John Dramani Mahama (L) and Rev John Ntim Fordjour (R)

The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has said that the Minority will not be intimidated or silenced by any efforts from the government to suppress their actions.

In an interview on Adom FM on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, the lawmaker criticised President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to security agencies to collaborate with him on reports of a mysterious flight arriving in the country, allegedly linked to drug trafficking.

“We will not allow them to use fear tactics on us to intimidate us. The Minority will fiercely continue to do our work and will not be cowed by any scare tactics,” he said.

According to him, the president should have simply requested information on the mysterious flights from the security agencies, rather than posting on social media directing the security forces to invite him [Ntim Fordjour] for further details on the incident.

Ntim Fordjour stated that he fulfilled his duty by providing the details about the flight, making it entirely unnecessary for him to be summoned for questioning.

“The information I gave is for them to answer, not for me to be questioned. I have provided enough information. You [Mahama] must call on them to bring the answer. The tweet and post made on Facebook by the president threatening the security agencies to collaborate with me is neither here nor there. He should direct his agencies to make disclosures,” he emphasised.

Ntim Fordjour further asserted that the Minority will vigorously resist any attempts by the security agencies to arrest its members for questioning regarding the matter.

“We will not allow them to arrest any member of the Minority, it will not happen,” he continued.

The lawmaker added that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus will continue to demand accountability from the government, urging the security agencies to provide updates to the public on the whereabouts of the flight and the reasons for its arrival in the country.

“I have provided enough information needed by the security agencies. All what they have to do is to inform the public about whether or not the two flights arrived in the country and if it did, is it still in the country or not.

“Also, they should be able to tell us what the flight came with and what it left with. These are very simple questions that does not need any invitation. They need to provide the details and if it requires more information then we can have a conversation,” he added.

John Ntim Fordjour’s comments come in response to a directive issued by President John Mahama, instructing all security agencies to collaborate with him in investigating allegations he raised during a press conference on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, regarding drug trafficking and money laundering involving two suspicious flights at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

According to the president, Ghana has a zero-tolerance policy for drug trafficking and will not allow the country to be used as a transit or final destination for illicit drugs.

“My attention has been drawn to allegations made at a press conference by an honourable Member of Parliament, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, regarding two suspicious flights arriving at Kotoka International Airport, suspected to be involved in drug trafficking and money laundering.

“The government takes all allegations seriously. To ensure a thorough and transparent investigation, I have directed all relevant investigative agencies – including the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), the Police CID, the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), and the National Security Coordinator- to immediately and fully collaborate with the Honourable Member of Parliament. He must provide all necessary information to facilitate the investigation and take all necessary actions to expose any drug-related activities.

“We will maintain zero tolerance for the use of Ghana as a transit or final destination for drug trafficking. The NIB recently made a high-profile drug bust with a street value of $350 million.”

Some OMCs delay fuel price adjustments; here’s why

0

Fuel prices increase at the pump Fuel prices increase at the pump

Some Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are set to increase the prices of petroleum products at their respective fuel pumps starting April 2, 2025.

However, others are reluctant to do so due to consumer demand and market dynamics.

Because price fluctuations affect demand, some OMCs may hold onto current rates to retain customers.

According to the latest Pricing Outlook Report, quoted by JoyBusiness, petroleum product prices are expected to see marginal increases at the pumps starting today, April 2, 2025, as the first pricing window of the month begins.

Petrol prices are projected to rise by 2%, bringing the price per liter to GH¢15.20, while diesel will increase by 1.1% to GH¢15.35 per liter.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), on the other hand, is expected to drop marginally by 0.3%, with a kilogram selling at GH¢17.30.

The price increase is partly due to the rise in crude oil prices on the international market.

Crude oil is currently trading at around $74 per barrel.

Industry players acknowledge that each time prices rise, demand drops, leading some OMCs to adopt a wait-and-see approach before making price adjustments.

Asante Kotoko vs Berekum Chelsea (GPL WK21)

0

Image of from Kotoko's previous game against Berekum Chelsea play videoImage of from Kotoko’s previous game against Berekum Chelsea

Asante Kotoko host Berekum Chelsea at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on matchday 21 of the Ghana Premier League.

Kotoko are on an eight-game winning streak at home, with their last home defeat dating back to November 12, when they lost 1-2 to Nations FC.

The Porcupines have not lost a game at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium since returning to the venue in December 2024.

Kotoko are the favorites as they face Chelsea, who have lost all of their last four away games.

However, the visitors will draw inspiration from their 1-0 win over Bechem United at the Baba Yara Stadium in the MTN FA Cup quarter-finals.

The reverse fixture between the two sides ended in a one-all stalemate.

While a win would send Kotoko back to the top of the table, a victory for Chelsea would end their away losing streak and close the gap on the top four.

Asante Kotoko, who are second on the table with 42 points, trail Bibiani Gold Stars by two points, while Berekum Chelsea occupy 8th position with 32 points.

In Kenya, girls are sold into marriage to stave off starvation from drought

0

Marsabit, Kenya – As the sun approaches its scorching zenith, Dukano Kelle heads out from the desolate settlement of Kambinye in northern Kenya, urging her family’s reluctant donkey forward by whipping it with an acacia branch.

Though the oppressive heat is energy-sapping – and despite not having eaten since the previous morning – Dukano, a 34-year-old mother of five, has no option but to walk for several hours to the nearest borehole, a journey that will likely end in disappointment as water levels are critically low.

Ever since she was married off by her family at the age of 15, this dispiriting ritual has been a twice-weekly chore for Dukano.

Her toil is like that experienced by thousands of women who live in stick-framed nomadic shelters pitched between black volcanic boulders on the arid plains of northern Kenya, where an existence that was already precarious has become a daily battle for survival.

Aid groups say climate change is not only making droughts more devastating and frequent but also deepening inequality in insidious ways.

The toll of more severe dry spells on human lives is often unforeseen.

One of the most disturbing developments has been a surge in the rate of child marriage, noticeably in communities in which there has been no rain for nine months.

The livestock that people depend on in these areas are dying from starvation and dehydration as the land becomes more sterile.

As a result, desperate families feel forced to offer up their daughters for marriage in exchange for a camel and a few goats – an arrangement that may provide the girl’s family with sustenance for a few more months.

During a journey on bumpy, barely passable tracks through the desert north of the regional capital, Marsabit, near Kenya’s border with Ethiopia, stories like Dukano’s are familiar.

Many girls are forced into marriage while they are still children and soon have to shoulder the burden of feeding their own children.

Nearly two hours after leaving the village, Dukano finally arrives at the well on which the local population is so dependent.

The donkey is loaded up with six yellow jerry cans strapped across its back with ropes.

Here, other women squat in the shade of a single skeletal acacia tree, waiting for their turn.

There are no men present; unlike their wives, they have stayed in the isolated village, relieved of the day’s most onerous task.

Gazing down into the three-metre-deep (10-foot-deep) concrete tank in which the water is stored, one can see that the supply is only about 10 centimetres (four inches) deep. This water was trucked in using a loan which, the villagers explain, was paid off in exchange for goats – the only currency they have.

One of the women explains that the remaining water will probably be just about enough to last into the following week.

Using a rope to lower the cut-off plastic jerry cans into the well, she brings up the water patiently, scoop by agonising scoop, ensuring not a drop is spilled: a painfully slow process.

Once full, the cans are strapped back on her donkey for the long journey home.

“The last drought took all of our animals,” says Dukano. “My youngest son also became very sick from malnutrition. He was weak and vomiting all of the time, and his hair started falling out. I was so worried that he would die.

“It made us much poorer, and now we are in another one which looks like it could be even worse.”

With three boys and two girls aged between 14 years and nine months to keep alive, Dukano bears a heavy responsibility, for which she has little assistance. With no means of transport, getting to Marsabit would take her several days.

“The scarcity of water is becoming more of a problem all of the time,” she continues. “I am really scared that we will not be able to feed the children, and we will never be able to afford medicine if they become sick. We have no money; we rely completely on goats and bartering.”

As well as increasing rates of child marriage, the local charity Indigenous Resource Management Organization (IREMO) believes climate change may have contributed to the increase in the accounts of rape and sexual assault they have received in Marsabit County. As the vegetation becomes sparser, female herders are forced to take their animals to more remote locations to graze, which makes them more vulnerable to men who prey on them.

In the ramshackle village of Bubisa, Wato Gato, now in her early 20s, describes how she was left alone in the harsh landscape to tend to the animals when she was only 15.

Her family instructed her to find pasture for their precious goat herd – their only source of income during the droughts – and to stay there until the rains came.

“I ended up in a nomadic camp with other herders,” recalls Wato. “I was forced to take the animals very far because the drought was so bad. There was a man there, and many days he ended up grazing his goats near mine. No one else was around.

“One day, he came up to me, and even though I tried to push him off, telling him I wasn’t interested, he assaulted me. I screamed, but because I was alone, my screams went unheard.

“In the following weeks he raped me three times. There was nothing I could do to prevent it; I was completely defenceless.”

It was months before the first drops of rain fell, by which time Wato knew she was pregnant.

When she reached her siblings, she expected their support; instead, she was shunned. Her brother informed her she had to leave for bringing shame upon the family.

Asked what happened to her assailant, Wato just shrugs. “He disappeared into the desert,” she sighs. “I had no way of accusing him.”

Today, she lives next to the main road to the Ethiopian border, trying to earn enough to feed her two children by selling phone credits and camel milk to passing drivers.

“As primary caregivers and providers, women and girls in one of Kenya’s driest regions are facing the greatest impacts of climate change,” said Elise Nalbandian, advocacy advisor at Oxfam in Africa, which works with local partners in the Marsabit region like IREMO to help families affected by the drought by providing emergency nutrition and sanitation.

This deepens existing gender inequalities and threatens women’s incomes, health and safety, Nalbandian explained.

“Women and girls must walk further to collect water and fuel – and are often the last to eat.

“Many are forced into taking on insecure jobs or migrating, placing them at higher risk, especially of gender-based violence.”

Though women of all ages bear the burden of a worsening climate and a lack of money and food, younger girls are often the least protected and most at risk.

When she was only 15, Boke Mollu’s parents told her that she was to be married to a stranger.

They were blunt about their motivation: their animals had perished, and therefore, a bride price of three camels and three goats represented an exchange that they considered more valuable than their daughter.

“Of course, I blamed my parents,” Boke, now 19, laments, “but at the same time, I know they would not have done it if the drought had not been so bad. For them, it was not a choice.

Married life was bearable at first, she says. “Then, he became very abusive towards me.”

“He raped me many times, but I stayed with him. What else could I do?” Boke says.

“My own family would not have me back because the man had paid the dowry.”

In the background of accounts like Boke’s is the hardship forged by the worst drought period in 40 years.

This is perhaps best symbolised by the towering cairns outside the desert settlement of Kambinye.

In the harsh sunlight, the heaps look like shimmering stones. Only close up does it become apparent that the landmarks are mounds of animal bones – each skull a camel, cow or goat upon which the nomadic herders who roamed the plains once depended.

When I saw Mahama repeating the mistakes of the past, I felt disappointed — Charles Owusu

0

According to a report from GhanaWeb, Charles Owusu, a former official of the Forestry Commission, has shared his disappointment with some of President John Dramani Mahama’s recent decisions, particularly the removal of officials perceived to have political ties to the previous administration.

Owusu initially believed Mahama had a unique opportunity to steer the country in a new direction and address past governance shortcomings.

However, he expressed concern that dismissing individuals based on their assumed political affiliations does not reflect positively on the nation.

He noted that given Mahama’s limited time in office, he had expected him to take a more inclusive approach rather than following patterns seen in previous administrations.

While acknowledging that the president has not violated any constitutional provisions by making changes to his government, Owusu argued that the process could have been handled in a better way.

Speaking during an interview on Kokrokoo on Peace FM on March 28, 2024, he stated that such decisions negatively impact the country.

He had hoped Mahama would break away from certain past practices, particularly since he is in his second term.

Owusu expressed his disappointment in seeing history repeat itself, adding that it now appears to have become a norm for incoming governments to remove existing officials to make room for their own appointees.

“However, when I saw him repeating the mistakes of the past, I felt disappointed. It now seems that whenever there is a change in government, everyone must leave to make way for new appointees,” he lamented.

Committee on ECG, NEDCo privatisation presents report

0

The Technical Committee established to advise the government on Private Sector Participation (PSP) in the power distribution activities of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has presented its report to the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, with three key recommendations.

The committee believes these measures will help address the challenges facing the ECG and NEDCo.

The three recommendations include Entity Concession, Multiple Lease and Service Franchise.

Committee Chairman Jabesh Amissah-Arthur spoke at an engagement with the Energy and Green Transition Minister to pursue Entity Concession, Multiple Lease and Service Franchise.

“There three main options that we focused on is what we call Entity Concession where the whole distribution business will be given out to a private concession as a whole.

“Then there is what we call the Multiple Lease in which case, the distribution across the country will be divided into several parts and each of them awarded separately. And then we have the Service Franchise in which case the private sector will operate the low voltage network from the distribution transformer to deliver services to homes and businesses.”

Ja Rule inaugurates six-unit classroom block at Nuaso

0

By Jesse Ampah Owusu

Accra, April 2, GNA – American rapper Jeffery Atkins, popularly known as Ja Rule, has inaugurated a six-unit classroom block for the Nuaso Anglican Primary School in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The inauguration was done in partnership with Pencils of Promise, an international Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in education.

The block, which was financed by the rapper, was furnished with dual desks and learning materials as well as an ancillary eight-unit water closet toilet facility.

This was after Ja Rule and Pencils of Promise had cut the sod for the commencement of construction work on April 1, 2024.

Accompanied by his wife, Aisha, the rapper expressed happiness of his ability to have put up the classroom block to enhance education in the community.

He said it was fulfilling to give back to society after a successful career and accomplishments, adding that there was no better place to do that than in the Nuaso Community.

He expressed the hope that he would see progress in the lives of the children in terms of their educational development when next he visited the community.

Ja Rule promised to bring onboard other projects he was passionate about to the community, including film, music, arts and sports.

“I am looking at building a nice gym facility here for you and a space where you can practice music, dance, arts and all the things that we love,” he said.

Mr Freeman Gobah, Ghana Country Director of Pencils of Promise, said they chose the school as part of efforts to end the shift system, which was practiced at the school, for years, due to its infrastructure challenges.

“The completion of this six-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities will not only help solve the infrastructural challenges as far as this school is concerned, but will also reduce the school’s enrollment and attendance challenges,” he added.

Mr Gomah urged the school authorities and learners to use the facility effectively to improve education outcomes in the community.

He pledged his organisation’s continued support to doing more to support education advancement through infrastructural development and teachers’ capacity building as it had done over the past 13 years.

Mr Samuel Tetteh, Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Education Director, said the school, through the Assembly, made an appeal for support after their old building was damaged by rainstorm some five years ago, resulting in truancy among students.

He said they looked forward to ending the shift system and increasing enrollment and attendance in the school with the inauguration of the new classroom block.

Meanwhile, Ja Rule and his team paid a courtesy call on the Konor of Manya Krobo, Nene Sakite II, prior to the inauguration of the block.

The rapper was presented with gifts, including the traditional Kente cloth and beads, by the traditional leaders of the area for his generosity.

The object of the Emissions Levy (Repeal) Bill, 2025 is to also repeal the Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112).

The event, which took place at the Presidency was witnessed by Dr Cassiel Baah Forson, Finance Minister, Mr Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the Clark to Parliament, Mr Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff, and Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidential Spokesman and Minister in-charge of Government Communications.

It will also provide financial relief to companies that patronise the E-Levy. This policy aligns with the Government’s broader commitment to fostering economic growth and enhancing financial inclusion.

The repeal of the E-Levy will encourage the government’s objective at achieving a cash-lite economy.

The repeal of the levy is also expected to stimulate digital transactions, encourage financial innovation, and ease the cost of doing business. Additionally, this measure is anticipated to boost consumer spending and drive economic activity across various sectors.

Concerning the Income Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2025, the removal of these withholding taxes is expected to provide additional income to persons in the affected categories.

Furthermore, the removal of the withholding tax on the purchase of unprocessed gold is expected to curtail smuggling and ensure that Ghana benefits from its gold resources.

NAPO donates GH₵50k, 500 bags of cement to victims

0

The running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general elections, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has called on the victims of the Adum Bluelight fire incident within the Central Business District of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to remain united in their efforts to rebuild the market.

The former Manhyia South MP, who visited the site on Wednesday, March 2, 2024, to commiserate with the victims, assured them of his support in their efforts to restore the market.

Traders at the Adum Bluelight section of the Central Business District were left devastated after a fire ravaged the entire section of the market in the early hours of Friday, March 21, 2025.

After visiting the damaged area, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh donated GH₵50,000 and 500 bags of cement to the traders to support the rebuilding efforts.

He further assured them that an additional GH₵100,000 would be allocated from the Manhyia South MP’s Common Fund to aid the reconstruction.

Speaking after the donation, he urged the traders to remain united and avoid divisions that could hinder their rebuilding efforts.

“I know Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the regional minister, Kennedy Agyapong, and others have visited you. Even President Mahama and some other executives from the NPP came here to visit you as well. So, if I don’t make my way here, it will not be fair to you.

“I believe that the woes of your brother are your woes as well. I have been affected personally by the fire outbreak. It is only when you get affected that you can be able to testify how painful it is. I pray the good God comfort you and bring you back on your feet. Those of us who have taken upon ourselves to do politics must know that we use people to build a nation, not money,” he stated.

For his part, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, also donated 100 bags of cement to the fire victims as part of his efforts to support the reconstruction of the market.

Sunyani East MP woos Iranian investors into Ghana’s rice sector

0

By Dennis Peprah

Sunyani, (Bono), April 2, GNA – Some investors in Iran have developed interest to support and invest in the nation’s agriculture sector for commercial production of rice, Mr Seid Mubarak, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sunyani East has said.

“I had lengthy discussions with them when I visited Iran and very soon the investors will arrive in the country to see the possibility of the investments in the sector”, he told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani.

Mr Mubarak said in consultation with some chiefs, acres of land had been earmarked in the constituency for the rice project that would create job opportunities for the youth and enhance food productivity too.

He expressed worry that despite Ghana’s arable and virgin lands, it was worrying that the nation imported about $2-million of rice annually.

Ghanaian artiste King Paluta Ghanaian artiste King Paluta

Ghanaian artiste King Paluta has questioned the loyalty of some social media influencers who have suddenly ‘switched sides’ in their support for him in the race for the 2025 TGMA Artiste of the Year title.

In a post shared on X on April 2, 2025, King Paluta noted that another influencer who had been rallying for him to win the ‘Artiste of the Year’, is now supporting another artiste.

He questioned whether the person is now being paid to engage in propaganda.

“I’ve seen one guy who was supporting me heavily. Even last week… Every time Paluta for AOTY. Yesterday, make I go see aa, he say I no dey deserve the award again. Every Twitter influencer on the payroll already? Lol Ghana Music, wake up! (in Wendy Shay’s voice),” he stated in a mixture of Pidgin and English

King Paluta, however, mentioned that he isn’t surprised the influencer is now backing another artiste, adding that he would do the same if he were in their position.

“Bro, I’m not mad at you at all. Even me, if they bring me the money, ago take. Do your job bro,” he added.

The musician has however come under severe backlash after his tweet went viral.

‘NDC far better than NPP in leagues on matters of integrity’

0

John Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South Constituency John Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South Constituency

A former Member of Parliament (MP) for Adentan Constituency, Kojo Adu Asare, has lashed out at the New Patriotic Party (NPP)on their recent outburst on President John Mahama and his government over pertinent issues and investigations ongoing in the country.

He said that the NDC will not sit for the NPP to portray them in a way that is not reflective of their character, although they are not saints.

He added that regardless, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has a better integrity than the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“We are not the same, check the time when some NPP members were flying private jets around and ask if we do same. So, if those things they did are having effects on them, they should not bring it to us,“ he said.

The former MP made the comments on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, on Wednesday April 2, 2025, following the request by Rev John Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member on the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior, seeking details on the outcomes on the drug trafficking and money laundering fight.

Adu Asare stated that the NPP enjoys sensationalism, but they should not try to equalise the two parties on issues of integrity.

He advised Rev Ntim Fordjour to respect God and his office as a reverend minister and speak the truth at all times to help instill the gospel in the youth.

Adu Asare called on the NPP and their cohorts to be patient with the NDC as they have been in power for just 3 months and are now in the process of fixing the mess they left to help recover the economy for development.

“We are clean people. In government for just 3 months, we have busted 350 million dollars cocaine a few days ago but we did not hear any of such a thing throughout their 8 years,” he said.

Earlier in Parliament on April 1, the Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, John Ntim Fordjour, addressing journalists, called on the government to make public, outcomes of efforts aimed at fighting drug trafficking and money laundering.

According to him, close to two months after an operation involving 12 containers of gold and cash at Sapeiman in Accra, the security agencies have not been able to brief the public on the status of investigations.

“We demand accountability from the National Security for the gold bars and cash retrieved and what they intend to do with it. The Minority Caucus, as responsible opposition as we are in absolute circumspection, has been patient and originally given two clear months for National Security to communicate the status of their investigation with the public,” he said.

President Mahama officially scraps betting tax

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has assented to the repeal of the betting tax on April 2, 2025, after it was approved by Parliament following thorough deliberations.

This implies that the 10% withholding tax on betting, gaming, and lottery winnings has officially been canceled and will no longer be in force.

The decision fulfills the campaign promise of President Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 elections.

As previously reported, Parliament officially approved the repeal of the betting tax on gaming and lottery following a vote on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, explained that the government has now abolished all withholding taxes on lottery, of which the betting tax is a subset.

“This is far more than what we (the NDC) promised in our manifesto. In our manifesto, we promised to remove the betting tax, which is a subcomponent of the lottery tax. Mr Speaker, what we have done is not only remove the tax on betting but also remove the tax on gaming and the tax on lottery,” he said.

The introduction of the tax was met with vehement criticisms from sports fans and stakeholders, who believed it would worsen the financial burden on persons involved in betting.

However, previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) officials defended the tax, arguing that it would discourage youth from betting and encourage them to engage in more legitimate ways to earn income.

DR Congo spares three convicted US coup accomplices of capital punishment

The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) President Felix Tshisekedi has downgraded the death sentences of three United States citizens convicted for taking part in a failed coup attempt last year, reducing their punishments to life imprisonment.

Tshisekedi issued the commutation on Tuesday, according to presidential spokesperson Tina Salam, six months after the US nationals – along with 34 others – were sentenced to death on charges of “terrorism” and “criminal association”.

Six people were killed during the botched coup attempt in May last year, led by little-known opposition figure Christian Malanga.

Malaga, along with a crew of armed men, targeted the presidential palace in Kinshasa as well as a close ally of Tshisekedi.

Malanga was fatally shot while resisting arrest soon after livestreaming the attack on his social media, the Congolese army said.

Malanga’s 21-year-old son, Marcel Malanga, who is a US citizen, was among those convicted of participating in the coup.

The other US nationals are Tyler Thompson Jr, 21, a high school friend of the younger Malanga who flew to Africa from Utah for what his family believed was a free vacation, and Benjamin Reuben Zalman-Polun, 36, who is reported to have known Christian Malanga through a gold mining company.

Marcel Malanga told the court that his father had forced him and Thompson to take part in the attack.

“Dad had threatened to kill us if we did not follow his orders,” he said previously during hearings.

Most of the others convicted of involvement in the rebellion attempt were Congolese but also included a Briton, Belgian and Canadian.

The Americans’ commutation comes amid efforts by Congolese authorities to sign a minerals deal with the US in exchange for security support to help Kinshasa fight rebels in the conflict-hit eastern region.

On Tuesday, the US State Department announced that President Donald Trump’s new senior adviser for Africa, Massad Boulos, will travel to DRC early this month to advance efforts for sustainable peace in eastern DRC and boost private sector investment.

Mahama is soft on galamsey because he is compromised – Richard Ahiagbah

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has alleged that President John Dramani Mahama is unable to take decisive action against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, due to his political affiliations with those engaged in the practice.

“President Mahama is very soft on galamsey, and it has worsened under him because he is compromised by many of the things he said on the campaign platform.

Fidelity Bank Posts Outstanding Performance

Julian Opuni

Fidelity Bank Managing Director, Julian Opuni, has announced impressive growth and profitability proving the indigenous bank’s resilience in the face of recent economic challenges.

Speaking at a media engagement themed, “Resilience and Growth in a Dynamic Banking Landscape,” Mr. Opuni highlighted the various obstacles the banking sector faced in recent years particularly the disruptive impact of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

Despite these challenges, he affirmed that the bank has emerged stronger than ever. “After 2022, we have recorded consistent profits, a testament to our sound strategy, strong leadership, and a team that has shown grit and focus,” he stated.

Mr. Opuni said Fidelity Bank’s ability to navigate the complexities of the country’s evolving financial sector is underscored by its low Non-Performing Loans (NPL) ratio, which remains well below the industry average.

This, according to Opuni, reflects the bank’s robust risk management framework and customer-centric approach.

“I can confidently say that we have once again delivered outstanding performance. Our total assets have grown, largely driven by increased customer deposits, and our revenue and profit levels continue to exceed expectations,” he revealed.

Mr. Opuni attributed this resilience to Fidelity Bank’s forward-thinking strategy and the commitment of its workforce.

He praised the bank’s ability to anticipate challenges and adapt swiftly to the ever-changing economic landscape, ensuring continued stability and profitability.

With yet another strong financial performance on the horizon, Fidelity Bank reaffirms its position as a leading force in Ghana’s banking industry.

As the sector continues to evolve, Mr Opuni’s message is clear—resilience, innovation, and strategic foresight are key to thriving in a dynamic financial environment.

John Mahama Travels Without Presidential Convoy Cruises In Regular VW In Viral Video

0

In an unusual display of humility and simplicity, President John Dramani Mahama has sparked a heated debate across the nation after being spotted traveling in a Volkswagen (VW) minibus without any security personnel or a presidential convoy. The moment, which was captured and shared on social media, has left many Ghanaians questioning the former president’s approach to personal security, especially given his status as the head of state.

While John Mahama is widely known for his down-to-earth personality, the decision to forgo the usual luxurious motorcade that accompanies high-ranking officials has raised eyebrows. For many, it was seen as an attempt to embrace simplicity and connect with the everyday Ghanaian. However, for others, particularly critics, it was viewed as reckless and unfit for a former president.

The incident took place recently when John Mahama was spotted traveling in the minibus without the usual security entourage that accompanies individuals of his stature. The former president was seen in a rather modest setting, sitting in the back of the vehicle, chatting casually with a few individuals. However, the lack of security around him raised concerns among some Ghanaians, especially given the potential risks associated with high-profile figures being left vulnerable in public.

“Mahama should stop that ooo. Does he know he is the president of Ghana? And he needs to take security seriously,” one concerned citizen commented on the viral video that quickly made its rounds on social media.

This comment reflects the divided reactions the video has garnered, with some praising the simplicity of the president’s approach, while others are calling for a more cautious and secure demeanor befitting his former position.

While some of Mahama’s supporters took to social media to celebrate his humble and relatable nature, others criticized him for not prioritizing his safety. There was a clear divide between those who admired his willingness to ditch the traditional trappings of power in favor of simplicity and those who believed it was irresponsible given the potential dangers that former leaders may face in the public eye.

Some Ghanaians argued that while Mahama’s decision was reflective of his character and desire to appear “one with the people,” it was equally important to remember that the safety of prominent figures should always be a top priority. The president, like any high-profile public figure, could be at risk of being targeted for various reasons, and for many, the absence of security was considered careless, especially after holding the highest office in the land.

One individual remarked, “I respect him, but he needs to understand that security should come first, regardless of how humble he wants to appear.

This incident has sparked wider debates about the nature of leadership in modern times. Does choosing to travel simply and forgo a presidential convoy convey the essence of leadership, or does it undermine the importance of protecting one’s self, especially after leaving office?

Many are pointing to Mahama’s reputation for being down-to-earth, often engaging with the common Ghanaian on a personal level. This is not the first time that the former president has displayed his humble approach, as he is known to engage in community activities and interact with regular citizens in an approachable manner. His supporters argue that this is a sign of a true leader, who prioritizes people over prestige.

On the other hand, others argue that while simplicity is important, a leader’s safety and protection should never be compromised, particularly in a politically charged climate where risks are always present.

The incident serves as an important reminder of the balance that leaders must strike between being relatable and maintaining security. It also raises questions about how former leaders should navigate their personal lives post-office. Should they continue to maintain a high level of security for their protection, or should they embrace the same simplicity they exhibited while in power?

As this controversy continues to spark conversations, it will likely lead to a broader discussion on leadership styles and security protocols for public figures in Ghana. The question remains: does humility trump security, or is there a middle ground that ensures both personal connection with the people and the protection of one’s safety?

For now, the public will continue to weigh in, as Mahama’s VW minibus ride becomes a talking point in the ongoing dialogue about leadership, simplicity, and security in Ghana.

Niger’s military leaders free ministers, but not ousted president

0

Niger’s military leaders have released more than 50 detainees, including former ministers in the government they toppled in 2023.

Among them are the former ministers of defence, oil and finance, as well as several senior army officers, convicted or accused of plotting previous coups.

Ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, who has been under house arrest since the 2023 military takeover, was not on the list of those released despite international calls for him to be freed.

When the BBC asked about President Bazoum’s continued detention, Justice Minister Aliyou Daouda cited “national security and sovereignty” concerns.

“The question of his release is an internal matter in Niger and only concerns Niger,” Justice Minister Aliyou Daouda told the BBC.

Bazoum is accused of undermining national security and high treason.

The release of the others is among the recommendations of a national conference held in February, along with extending the rule of General Abdourahamane Tiani by five years.

The freed ministers and officials were arrested after the July 2023 coup, which brought General Tchiani to power, and had been held for alleged conspiracy to undermine state security and authority.

This move could be an attempt by the junta to reconcile the country and gain popular support.

Similar amnesties have been granted by military governments in Burkina Faso and Guinea.

NDC urges supporters to use laid down procedures to address party concerns

0

By Robert Tachie Menson

Wamfie (Bono), April 2, GNA – Mr George Yaw, the branch executive of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Attakrom in Dormaa East constituency of the Bono Region, has urged party supporters to use laid down procedures in seeking redress for their grievances.

His appeal followed the vandalisation of the party’s constituency office at Wamfie by some irate youth of the party which caused extensive destruction to party properties.

The angry supporters destroyed some office stationeries and documents, burned party billboards and posters of the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency Madam Rachael Owusuaa, accusing the MP of influencing the choice of the President nominee.

Their action, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered was to register their displeasure and protest over the President nominee Mr King Osei Owusu as the Dormaa East District Chief Executive (DCE).

However, in an interview with the GNA, Yaw condemned the action of the supporters, adding that the use of violence was unacceptable and undermined the party’s credibility as well as the hard-won reputation of the MP.. The branch executive advised the supporters to always exercise restraint and endeavour to channel their concerns and grievances through the appropriate quarters.

Mr Yaw said the supporters “must always present their case to the leaders and elders of the party rather than taking the law into their own hands and do what they like”.

“The NDC has been in opposition for the past 24 years in the Dormaa East constituency and suffered to win the seat”, he stated and cautioned the supporters “to always think well about the consequences of their actions before embarking on their plans to protect the supreme interest of the party”.

“That will safeguard the party’s image and not to undermine its reputation and credibility and give chance to detractors to work against its fortunes ahead”, he added.

3 Injured, 1 Arrested At Kasoa Eid-ul-Fitr Carnival

0

One of the injured victims receiving treatment

The Kasoa Central Business District (CBD) Police Command has arrested one suspect in connection with the violent clash that ensued between the two Muslim groups from Walantu and Odupongkpehe Zongo during the Eid-ul-Fitr street carnival in Kasoa, in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region.

The arrest was made following swift reactions by the command, which led to the detainment of the suspect, who, according to the police, is currently assisting with further investigations. A hammer and other offensive weapons were seized by the police, as the groups were said to have carried various weapons, including well-sharpened machetes, to the carnival.

The other three suspects have sustained various degrees of injuries, with one in a critical state and currently receiving medical treatment at the Kasoa Polyclinic.

One of the injured victims, a female, said, “I was having fun with my friends when violence suddenly erupted. I felt a sharp cut on my hand.”

Reports from Adom Online indicate that the altercation, which occurred on Monday evening, arose from long-standing tensions between the two groups.

An eyewitness, Mohamed Osman, disclosed in an interview that the groups had unresolved disputes before the Ramadan fasting period. This resulted in the clash that was witnessed during the street carnival organised to climax the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr.

“Though the groups had a misunderstanding, the fasting period prevented them from engaging in a fight, and the intervention of community leaders also seemed to have put the matter to rest,” he said.

MP Condemnation

The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, has condemned the increasing violent clashes occurring in Kasoa and its environs, thereby calling on constituents to desist from these attacks.

Speaking to journalists, Naa Koryoo called on the people of Kasoa to support her agenda to “rebrand the area to attract investors,” and to avoid engaging in violence, which, according to her, scares off investors.

EC Boss Jean Mensah Receives Good News

0

According to latest report by GBC, The Centre for Democracy and Socio-Economic Development (CDS) has asked President John Mahama not to remove the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, and her deputies. CDS has therefore sent a petition to the President against the removal Jean Mensah and her deputies.

This request comes after two petitions were sent to the President by the Positive Transparency and Accountability Movement Ghana and an individual named Daniel Ofosu-Appiah. These petitions demand the removal of Jean Mensa, her deputies Dr. Bossman Asare and Samuel Tettey, as well as another commissioner, Dr. Peter Atuahene.

The CDS believes removing the EC officials would harm Ghana’s democracy. They argue that such an action could set a bad example, where future governments may feel entitled to dismiss EC officials for political reasons. The organization reminded the President about a similar event in 2017 when an EC Chairperson and her deputies were removed. According to them, that decision was seen as politically motivated, and removing Jean Mensa now would create the same impression.

The CDS warns that if this trend continues, it will weaken the independence of the Electoral Commission and make it difficult for the body to function without political interference. The organization also noted that those who want Jean Mensa removed are using the 2017 incident as justification for their demand. The CDS believes this cycle must stop to protect the credibility of the EC.

The petition further states that the Electoral Commission should remain independent and free from political control. If one government removes EC officials, future administrations might do the same, leading to continuous political interference. This could eventually damage the trust citizens have in the election process.

For this reason, the CDS urges President Mahama to reject the petitions and allow Jean Mensa and her team to continue their work. They believe this decision will protect Ghana’s democracy and prevent the Electoral Commission from becoming a tool for ruling governments to manipulate elections.

Here are some reactions from Ghanaians.

Prosecution amends charges against Ahmed Suale murder suspect

0

The charges against Daniel Owusu Koranteng, the suspect in the Ahmed Suale killing, have been amended by the prosecution.

The new sheet now includes abetment to commit a crime, to wit, murder.

This ensued when the case was called in court on Wednesday, April 2.

Already, the 35-year-old businessman, also known as Nana Amakye, has denied allegations that he sold photographs of the investigative journalist to former Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong before M Suale’s murder in 2019.

The prosecution maintains that Suale himself had identified Koranteng as the person responsible for supplying the images that were later broadcast on Net2 TV, where Kennedy Agyapong called for retribution against the journalist.

He had been initially charged with murder when he was arraigned on March 19, a charge that now includes abetment to murder.

He has since been remanded into custody. The case has been adjourned to April 17.

‘Going through divorce is a worst nightmare’ – Empress Gifty

0

Gospel musician Empress Gifty Gospel musician Empress Gifty

Gospel musician Empress Gifty has opened up on her painful experience with divorce and the mental trauma that comes with it.

In a video shared on Instagram on April 1, 2025, she stated that going through a divorce can be the “worst nightmare” one could experience in life.

She explained that the trauma could even affect a future partner, particularly if that partner is younger.

“You don’t have any idea the trauma one goes through when going through a divorce. It’s like you are now starting your entire life again. “It is also frustrating if, after going through the divorce, you settle for a younger man because your family will disrespect him. Even your friends will mock him, and you won’t even feel comfortable walking with him,” she said.

Empress Gifty added that marrying an older man is the best option.

Using her marriage as an example, she indicated that she feels safe whenever she is with her current husband in public.

“But if the man is older than you, you feel safe whenever you are with him. If I am with my husband, I feel comfortable because if you touch me, he will come for you too,” she added.

E-Levy, Betting Tax, others officially gone as president assents to repeal

0

President John Dramani Mahama after assenting to the bills President John Dramani Mahama after assenting to the bills

GhanaWeb Business understands that President John Dramani Mahama has fulfilled a key campaign promise by signing into law amended bills that abolish the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), Betting Tax, Emissions Levy and among others.

This action, completed on April 2, 2025, follows the passage of a resolution in parliament to abolish these taxes.

Parliament, on March 26, 2025, voted to approve the repeal of the Electronic Transfer Levy Act, 2022 (Act 1075).

In a manner similar to the initial passage of the law in 2022, the House on Wednesday conducted the repeal process under a Certificate of Urgency, expediting the second reading, consideration, and third reading stages.

Speaking during the second reading stage, the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, highlighted an observation made by the Finance Committee; that repealing the law would make GH¢2 billion available to Ghanaian citizens in the form of disposable income.

In accordance with Article 106(7) of the Constitution, President John Dramani Mahama has assented to the bills.

Background

The Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) was introduced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government under President Nana Akufo-Addo through the Electronic Transfer Levy Act, 2022 (Act 1075).

Passed on March 29, 2022, after a contentious parliamentary process, the law imposed a 1.5% tax (later reduced to 1%) on electronic transactions, including mobile money payments, bank transfers, and merchant payments.

The levy aimed to widen Ghana’s tax net by targeting the informal sector and was projected to generate GH¢4.5 billion annually to address fiscal deficits amid economic challenges, including the 2022 debt crisis.

Implementation began on May 1, 2022, following approval by a slim NPP majority (137-136) in Parliament, despite a walkout by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority.

The E-Levy faced immediate backlash. Public protests erupted, driven by groups like #NoToELevy, citing its burden on low-income Ghanaians reliant on mobile money.

A 2022 ISSER study found that 83% of Accra’s informal workers disapproved, and compliance remained low—by December 2024, revenue had reached only GH¢1.5 billion, according to Graphic Online, far below targets.

The NDC challenged the levy’s legality in the Supreme Court in April 2022, arguing procedural flaws, but the court upheld it in a unanimous 7-0 ruling on October 26, 2022.

During the 2024 campaign season, both the NDC and NPP promised to repeal the E-Levy. The NDC described it as regressive and punitive, disproportionately affecting the poor and stifling digital financial inclusion.
