NPP’s decision not to release Oquaye’s report to shield actors of 2024 defeat-Asante Okyere

0

A political science lecturer at the University of Cape Coast in the Central Region, Dr. Jonathan Asante Okyere, has suggested that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is deliberately withholding the findings of the Prof. Mike Oquaye-led committee report on the party’s 2024 electoral defeat to protect certain influential figures.

Speaking in an interview on Accra 100.5 FM’s midday news on Thursday, April 17, 2025, Dr. Okyere claimed that the party’s decision not only to keep the report private but also to bar members from discussing its contents is aimed at shielding individuals whose actions contributed to the party’s loss in the December 7 general elections.

While acknowledging that the party has the right to withhold the report, the political science lecturer argued that making at least parts of it public would promote transparency and help guide future strategies.

“It is troubling that the party leadership is preventing members from commenting on the report. Members should have been given the space to express their views on what went wrong in the elections,” he remarked.

Dr. Okyere further observed that the lack of transparency is enabling certain powerful figures within the NPP to maintain their grip on the party, warning that this could hinder internal reforms and renewal efforts.

The Prof. Mike Oquaye committee was tasked with investigating the reasons behind the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections and submitted its report to the party’s national leadership earlier this week. However, the findings have not yet been made public.

Kofi Bentil proposes ways to remove constitutionally protected officers without political influence

Vice President of the policy think tank IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil Vice President of the policy think tank IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil

A Vice President of the policy think tank IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, is of the view that politicians should take their hands off the process of removing constitutionally protected officers.

He believes that those whose work is directly affected by the occupants of such offices should be the ones to determine whether these individuals should be removed or not.

To Kofi Bentil, the attempt to remove people in these offices was wrong yesterday and remains wrong today.

Sharing his opinion via social media, he wrote:

“I associate with the view stressed on Newsfile that politicians must take their hands off the removal of Chief Justices and other constitutionally protected officers. It was wrong yesterday and is still wrong today.

I have always said, and I repeat, that the best people to determine whether someone is performing well or not are those who work with the person and those who are affected by their work.

In the case of the Chief Justice, it is lawyers, judges, and litigants. We can excuse litigants because those who lose cases will almost always be upset, and vice versa. But lawyers and judges experience both wins and losses regularly, and they know whether a judge is competent or not.”

Here’s my proposal:

When a petition is received, a prima facie case must be established by the President’s office. If none exists, the petition should be thrown out.

Once a prima facie case is established, Parliament should be the forum to determine whether the case warrants consideration for the removal of the Chief Justice.

If Parliament decides that the matter should proceed, the judiciary and lawyers must vote on whether to remove or retain the Chief Justice—based on a simple majority.

The advantages of this approach:

A. It removes the process from the hands of politicians.

B. It makes it more difficult to remove a Chief Justice on a whim.

C. It holds the Chief Justice more accountable to their judicial peers and the legal community.

D. It prevents politicians from threatening or intimidating the Chief Justice into doing their bidding.

Gov’t to track down illegal mining excavator owners – Defence Minister

0

Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has announced a decisive move by the government to pursue the owners of excavators used in illegal mining activities, as part of President John Dramani Mahama’s renewed efforts to combat the galamsey menace.

Speaking on the latest developments in the anti-galamsey fight, Dr. Boamah disclosed that authorities have successfully obtained the chassis numbers of several seized excavators—marking a significant step toward identifying the individuals behind the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining operations.

“As promised last month, we are glad to report that some chassis numbers of seized excavators used to perpetrate galamsey—an environmental sin against humanity and God—have been secured,” the Defence Minister stated.

He extended his appreciation to the Ghana Police Service for their cooperation in the ongoing efforts, adding that the information will help identify and track the “big people” behind the scenes who fund and benefit from galamsey.

“These chassis numbers will aid President Mahama’s determined and sustained fight against illegal mining,” Dr. Boamah noted.

“We are using them to trace the owners, asking key questions: Who imported the excavators? Who bought them? For what purpose? Why are they being used for galamsey?”

He emphasised that this approach is part of a broader, innovative strategy to address illegal mining from its roots, in line with President Mahama’s commitment to a comprehensive, root-and-branch eradication of the galamsey threat.

Morocco clinch first U-17 AFCON title after penalty shootout victory over Mali

Morocco were crowned champions of the CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time Morocco were crowned champions of the CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time

Morocco were crowned champions of the CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in their history after defeating two-time winners Mali 4-2 on penalties following a goalless draw in Saturday’s final at the Stade El Bachir in Mohammedia.

The hosts held their nerve in the shootout, with goalkeeper Zakaria Alaoui saving two penalties to spark wild celebrations among the home supporters after a tense and balanced final between two of the tournament’s standout teams.

This triumph ends Morocco’s wait for a continental title at this level, coming two years after they finished as runners-up to Senegal. For Mali, it was a fifth final appearance and another painful near miss despite controlling large spells of the game.

Both sides had chances during regular time, with Ilies Belmokhtar and Ahmed Mouhoub testing Mali from distance, while Seydou Dembélé and Soumaila Fané caused problems for the Moroccan defence. Fané had a first-half goal disallowed by VAR for handball in the build-up.

The shootout saw Morocco convert all four of their spot-kicks with confidence, while Mali’s Issa Koné and Lamine Keita had their attempts saved.

Coach Nabil Baha’s team impressed throughout the tournament, conceding just once, and showed tactical discipline and resilience in the final to seal a historic win.

You Are a Shapeless And Disrespectful Woman- Lawyer Maurice Ampaw Fires Back at Yaa Titi

News Hub Creator19h

Legal practitioner Maurice Ampaw has issued a harsh rebuke to television host Yaa Titi, accusing her of inappropriate conduct on air. Ampaw did not hold back, referring to her as a “useless woman” who, in his view, frequently makes thoughtless and offensive statements.

He condemned Titi for what he sees as a lack of respect, especially towards men, suggesting that her controversial remarks are motivated by money from the NDC. According to Ampaw, “She speaks nonsense all the time. If she were my daughter, I wouldn’t even request a dowry because she’s not worth it—she’s shapeless.”

The lawyer further argued that her actions undermine the standards of public discourse and television, asserting that she has no business being on TV if she uses it to insult others. “Because NDC has given her money, she thinks she can come and insult us. This is a warning to her,” he stated.

Ampaw’s outburst has prompted mixed reactions online, with some calling for Yaa Titi to reconsider her approach and be more mindful of her public comments, given her influence as a media personality.

Sad News Hits NPP as Another Member Has Reportedly Been Arrested By OSP

News Hub Creator17h

Another storm appears to be brewing in Ghana’s political environment following reports that Gordon Asare-Bediako, a notable figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been arrested by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). The information was disclosed on Facebook by NPP member PK Sarpong, who voiced dismay over the development.

Sarpong alleged that Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng authorized the detention of Asare-Bediako based on accusations that he falsely suggested a private jet was being procured for the OSP. While the basis of the claim and the reasoning behind the arrest remain vague, the situation has ignited widespread conversation across political circles and social platforms.

Asare-Bediako’s reputation for bold political commentary has made his alleged arrest particularly controversial. Many have raised concerns about the implications for freedom of speech and whether his detention was a necessary legal measure or an attempt to mute political criticism.

The OSP has not released any formal communication regarding the situation. If the allegations by PK Sarpong hold water, the public will be eager to learn about the next steps—whether Asare-Bediako will face charges or be released. The incident has fueled speculation about a possible clampdown on political activists and commentators.

Coming amid ongoing political friction post-elections, this development could further polarize public opinion and deepen rifts within the nation’s political factions.

Regardless of the outcome, the reported arrest of Gordon Asare-Bediako has already intensified political discourse. Whether justified or not, the incident underscores the fragile balance between legal accountability and freedom of political expression in Ghana.

Oquaye Report Leaks: Bawumia’s Debate Call Described as ‘Reckless’ and ‘Suicidal’

0

Pressure is now mounting on the NEC to make the report public, with some party activists and civil society groups arguing that full disclosure is the only way to begin the healing process and rebuild ahead of the next election cycle.

A leaked excerpt from the confidential Mike Oquaye Report has revealed damning details about the internal missteps that led to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) crushing defeat in the 2024 general elections, pointing directly at the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

‘It was the most regrettable experience in my life’

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Mahama has shared what he described as the “most regrettable experience” of his life after attempting to set up a family member in business.

Speaking at the Kwahu Business Forum on Saturday, April 19, the former president recounted how, in an effort to ease the financial burden of his parliamentary income, he purchased a bus over ten years ago for a relative to operate a small transportation business.

Rather than proving beneficial, the venture turned into a regrettable experience that taught him a valuable lesson about corporate responsibility and trust.

He explained that the bus was handed over to a driver who overworked it to the point that the axle broke, resulting in expensive and time-consuming repairs that ultimately undermined the purpose of the initiative.

“Anytime you saw the bus, it had more load on top of it than inside it. So what happened? The axle broke down, and it was the most regrettable experience of my life. When the axle broke down, they came to me to buy a new one. The whole purpose of buying the bus was defeated. Every time it broke down, they would come to me for repairs. It was costing me more to fix the bus than if I had just handed the money to them,” he said.

The situation worsened when he discovered that the driver—who was living in the family home—had started building a house using income from the mismanaged transportation business. That building, Mahama noted, remains incomplete to this day.

“So I refused to repair the bus and decided to dispose of it. I sold the bus. This was several years ago, probably more than ten years now. And ever since I sold the bus, that building, which had reached the lintel level, is still at lintel level—even today.”

President Mahama’s story was in response to a point made by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who had noted that many businesses fail not due to a lack of funding, but because of unreliable partners or staff.

Mr. Mahama agreed, stressing that “finding reliable partners to collaborate with” remains one of the biggest challenges for entrepreneurs and a major obstacle to the growth of the industrial sector.

“There are business owners bringing in foreign managers to oversee their operations because they can’t trust local hires—that’s an indictment on our human resource,” he said.

He urged forum attendees to prioritize loyalty and integrity as core values for building sustainable business cultures.

“If you want to suck your pound of flesh out of a business and kill it, no industry will grow,” he cautioned.

‘Is the Chief Justice in communication with the Minority caucus’? Edudzi Tameklo asks

0

Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo and Edudzi Tameklo Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo and Edudzi Tameklo

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority, Edudzi Tameklo, has questioned how the Minority in Parliament secured what they claim to be the content of the petition for the removal of the Chief Justice from office.

His question comes after the Minority in Parliament, at a press conference, condemned the petition to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, describing it as a blatant attempt to undermine the judiciary’s independence.

The MP for Suame, John Darko, who also serves as the Legal Counsel of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, argued that the grounds for the petition—including allegations that the Chief Justice advised the President on judicial promotions and presided over a contentious case—were “flimsy and politically motivated.”

“We see the spurious petition for the removal of the Chief Justice as a serious setback to our democratic journey,” he stated.

But commenting on the issue during a panel discussion on TV3, monitored by GhanaWeb, Edudzi Tameklo, who also doubles as the Director of Legal Affairs, said the process for the removal of Her Ladyship Gertrude Torkornoo is highly confidential and has been handled as such by the Presidency.

He questioned how the supposed content of the petition was leaked.

“My learned senior says we were told… When the President received the petition and the Chief Justice wrote to request a copy, the President, in honouring the request, sealed the petition before giving it to her. Who informed the Minority of the details? Is Her Ladyship the Chief Justice in communication with the Minority? Because at this point, the petition is strictly between the President and the Chief Justice. In fact, to preserve the integrity of the process, the President sealed and marked the petition.

I have heard one journalist on Metro TV refer to what they claim is the content of the petition. Who leaked it to them and to the Minority? Who told them?” Edudzi Tameklo asked.

He further urged the Minority to trust the process for the removal of the Chief Justice, just as they trusted the process that led to the removal of Lauretta Lamptey, the former Commissioner of the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

“How come that [John Darko], the Minority Spokesperson on Legal Affairs—his own colleague, Frank Annoh Dompreh—brought a petition for the removal of Lauretta Lamptey, and President Mahama didn’t say it was an NPP MP against his appointee? He received the petition, acted on it, found merit, and dismissed his own appointee.

How come that today, Annoh Dompreh and his Minority do not have confidence that President Mahama will do the same thing he did with Lauretta—affording her the opportunity to defend herself? Where is the fear, where is the panic?” Edudzi Tameklo questioned.

I didn’t know the role of a Presidential staffer when I was appointed – Nana Yaa Jantuah

Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah

Nana Yaa Jantuah, a former Director of Public Relations and External Affairs at the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), has claimed that she did not understand the role of a Presidential Staffer when she was appointed by President John Mahama.

The former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) was appointed as part of a series of key appointments to the Office of the President, announced on January 21, 2025.

Speaking in an interview with Happy FM, Nana Yaa Jantuah stated that she was initially confused about the responsibilities of a Presidential Staffer, especially given the large number of individuals who served in that capacity under the previous Akufo-Addo administration.

“When I heard the news of my appointment as a Presidential Staffer, I didn’t understand. I didn’t know what the role entailed because, during former President Akufo-Addo’s regime, there were many people appointed as Presidential Staffers, so I wasn’t sure what the job involved. However, when I resumed work, I realised that being a Presidential Staffer is a lot of work. I am in charge of Energy, Green Transition, and PURC. So, anything involving energy that comes to the presidency, I handle it,” she explained.

In the lead-up to the 2024 Presidential Election, she publicly endorsed John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking at the NDC’s final campaign rally at Zurak Park in Madina, Accra, she passionately declared her support for Mahama, citing his proven leadership and the urgent need for a change in governance.

“I am here because of John Mahama. I am here because I believe Ghana must be liberated. Ghana must be free from what is currently happening, and the only political party at this moment capable of helping us out of this situation is the NDC,” she stated.

“I am officially endorsing John Mahama to be the next President of Ghana. He has done it before—he has led this country before—and he did it excellently. I think it’s time we give him a second chance to finish the good work he started,” she added.

Minister inaugurates committee to review basic education curriculum

0

Committee members reviewing the curriculum of kindergarten one to Primary six have been urged to develop a comprehensive policy to meet the needs of 21st-century learning skills.

The committee has also been charged to ensure that there is the production of ethical and responsible learners to advance development in the country.

Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, speaking at the inauguration of the committee in Accra, said the members were selected due to their experience and capabilities to execute their mandates.

“Education holds the key to the success of the country. If we get the foundation right, then things will fall in place,” the Minister said.

The Committee, the Minister stressed, was a visionary step to prepare learners to be competitive in the real world of work.

“To succeed, our children need more than academic knowledge; they need to be critical thinkers to solve problems. Next year, we are looking at launching an initiative dubbed, ‘Beyond Academic Skills’ to have at least an hour or more for learners to undertake some national exercise like farming or painting,” he said.

That, he stated, would build their mental aptitude for practical things as well as build their assertiveness and make them responsible learners.

He charged the Committee to develop a curriculum that would identify the learners with their national values, ethics and integrity to work for the good of society.

The Minister urged them to be intentional about the teaching of Ghana’s rich history to be abreast of the country’s heritage and values, among other things.

“Your review must settle the matter on who is the founder of Ghana and set the records on historical records of the country devoid of manipulation,” he said.

The Committee which is chaired by the Minister, include Mrs Mamle Andrews, Chief Director of the Ministry of Education (MOE), Professor George K.T. Oduro, Technical Advisor to the Minister, Professor Dzakadzie, Director General of the National Council for Curriculum Assessment; Prof Ernest Kofi Davis, Director General of GES; and Prof Azeko Salifu Tahiru, Inspector of Schools, National Schools Inspectorate Authority.

Government to Create Indigenous Business Advisory Council Following Kwahu Forum

0

By Jesse Ampah Owusu, GNA

Accra, April 19, GNA – Mr. Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff, announced that the Government will establish an Indigenous Business Advisory Council to implement ideas from the Kwahu Business Forum.

He stated that indigenous business leaders would be selected to ensure the continuous growth of the local business sector.

Mr. Debrah disclosed this while delivering closing remarks on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama at the second Kwahu Business Forum.

The two-day forum, themed “The Future of Business: The Role of the Financial Sector,” is ongoing at the Mpraeso Social Centre in the Kwahu South District of the Eastern Region.

Mr. Debrah stated that the initiative demonstrated the President’s dedication to enhancing Ghana’s indigenous business environment and establishing the country as a leading exporter in West Africa.

He disclosed that the President had appointed Mr. Seth Terkper, his Advisor on Economy, to oversee the outcomes of the Forum.

“His Excellency the President, in order to ensure that this does not become an ordinary talk show, has nominated his Presidential Advisor on Economy to have an oversight responsibility,” he said.

“In other words, he is going to ensure that after this programme, we are going to put our ideas and thoughts together and get all the takeaways, line them up and make sure we are check-marketed,” he added.

President Mahama officially opened the second edition of the Kwahu Business Forum on Saturday, April 19.

The forum, a brainchild of the President, aims to foster entrepreneurship and support the growth of Ghana’s Small and Medium Enterprises.

It aligns with the government’s vision of expanding private sector capacity, particularly in agro-processing and manufacturing.

As a non-partisan national development initiative, the forum brings together business owners, industrialists, investors, start-ups, and industry players to network, share experiences, and explore ways to raise capital or utilize financial products.

Kwahu Forum Urges Banks to Lower Interest Rates for Businesses

0

By Jesse Ampah Owusu, GNA

Accra, April 19, GNA – Participants at the second Kwahu Business Forum have called on financial institutions to lower interest rates and ease collateral demands on loans.

The majority, comprising entrepreneurs and business owners, argued that high interest rates and excessive collateral requirements prevent access to financial assistance and hindered business growth.

The remarks were shared during a Q&A session at the Business Forum, which focused on the theme “The Future of Business: The Role of the Financial Sector.”

They raised the concerns during a question-and-answer session at the forum, which focused on the theme “The Future of Business: The Role of the Financial Sector,” held at the Mpraeso Social Centre in the Kwahu South Municipality.

President John Dramani Mahama, together with Mr. Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff and other government officials opened the event, which brought together financial institutions, business leaders, and entrepreneurs to discuss strategies for the growth of the sector.

Mr. Eric Kwaku Boateng, President of the Ghana Automobile Dealers Association, said that high interest rates on loans deterred businesses from accessing facilities to support their ventures.

He noted that most entrepreneurs failed to meet banks’ collateral demands, leading to business collapse, and urged banks to revise their policies to support businesses.

Mr. Sampson Asaki Awingobit, Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, appealed for tailored financial solutions t enhance business.

“Setting up or running a business in Ghana is not easy. We urge financial institutions to open up to our business community and provide access to tailored financial services,” he said.

Awingobit also called on the Government to create marketplaces and enhance access for exporters and importers.

Mr. Takyi Addo, Director of Communications for the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers, urged the Government to address high import duties and the depreciating Cedi.

He said that high import duties, coupled with interest rates, stifled the growth of local businesses.

Madam Eunice Ohui Hlordjison, CEO of Ephphatha Ghana Limited, urged the Government to implement supportive regulations for the local business sector.

She noted that the current business environment did not favor unemployed graduates aiming to start their own businesses, due to a lack of financial products from the state or banks.

‘Shield Mahama from the empty noise of clueless critics’

0

Professor Ransford Gyampo, Acting CEO of Ghana Shippers Authority Professor Ransford Gyampo, Acting CEO of Ghana Shippers Authority

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has urged communicators of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to protect President John Mahama and his appointees from what he described as “empty noises” from critics who, in his view, know little to nothing about the governance of a country.

Wednesday, April 16, 2025, marked exactly 100 days of the John Dramani Mahama–Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang administration.

There has certainly been no dull moment during the first 100 days of the administration, with the government’s statements and actions becoming major talking points almost daily.

In its bid to fulfill promises made to Ghanaians, the government has taken several actions—including the arrest and raiding of homes of some former government officials—which have sparked public debate and, in some cases, division.

However, speaking during a panel discussion on TV3 monitored by GhanaWeb, Prof. Gyampo, a former lecturer at the University of Ghana, emphasized the need for party communicators to mount a robust defense of the government to allow the President the peace of mind to effectively govern the country.

“It is too early for the Mahama government to be tolerating the bad press that people have started generating. I urge the ruling party and its communicators to begin to activate all ‘mouth cameras’ so that we can offer a strong regime defense and ensure that the President has peace of mind amidst the needless noise from those who know next to nothing about governing a country,” Prof. Gyampo said.

He added: “I know President Mahama is focused, but whether you like it or not, he is human. So, sometimes he may be distracted or affected by some of this needless noise from people who don’t understand governance. Therefore, all ‘mouth cameras’ must be activated to shield the President and his appointees from such distractions.”

“So, Edudzi and co., you need to start doing some of these things. Otherwise, they will continue to throw mud. They may not know how to govern, but they can still throw enough mud that, eventually, it begins to stick in the minds of the public. Meanwhile, we are aware of the kind of positive things the government is doing.”

Jean Mensa, Chief Justice Torkornoo will be removed – Mustapha Gbande

0

Mustapha Gbande is the Deputy Director of Operations at the Office of the President Mustapha Gbande is the Deputy Director of Operations at the Office of the President

Deputy Director of Operations at the Office of the President, Mustapha Gbande, has asserted that the fate of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, and the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, have already been decided.

According to him, the two women will certainly be removed from office, and their exit is only a matter of time, 3news.com reports.

He argued that both the Chief Justice and the EC Chair have demonstrated that they are politically exposed individuals and, therefore, cannot continue to hold such sensitive positions.

Mr Gbande rejected claims that their removal by President John Dramani Mahama would set a bad precedent.

“We haven’t amended our laws. The same law gave President Akufo-Addo the right to remove Charlotte Osei; they are all independent institutions, yet he removed her.

“We have come not just to repeat precedents, but to address each case individually. The Chief Justice will have to go, the EC Chairperson and other politically exposed directors will have to go – and indeed, they will go. It is just a matter of time, so that we can fill those positions with individuals who are not politically exposed,” he stated.

His remarks come in the wake of ongoing controversy surrounding a petition for the removal of Chief Justice Torkornoo.

On 25 March 2025, President Mahama began consultations with the Council of State following the submission of three petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.

According to a statement from the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the petitions were forwarded to the Council of State in accordance with the constitutional procedure outlined in Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.

You’re on your own if you do galamsey; Mahama will deal with you

0

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Edudzi Tameklo, has warned members of the party against engaging in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey or face the full rigours of the law.

According to the lawyer and politician, President John Mahama will deal ruthlessly with any member or supporter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who engages in any illegal activity that destroys water bodies and farmlands in the pursuit of gold for personal gain.

In recent weeks, the government has intensified its efforts to halt galamsey through various measures, including the deployment of the army to galamsey sites, where many arrests have been made.

There have been allegations that some members of the NDC, emboldened after the party assumed power on January 7, 2025, are heavily involved in galamsey.

Speaking during a panel discussion on TV3 on Saturday, April 19, 2025, Edudzi Tameklo, who is also the Director of Legal Affairs of the NDC, warned party members engaged in galamsey to cease their activities, emphasizing that no party official will come to their aid if they are arrested.

“If you are an NDC person and you decide to go and do galamsey, you are on your own. President Mahama will deal with you brutally. Once you make up your mind that you are going to do this, remember that you are an enemy of President Mahama. You are also an enemy of his government and of the NDC. At that point, you are an environmental terrorist.

“So, if you decide to do any of these things, don’t for a minute assume that something will happen and there will be a call for ‘order from above.’ If you are expecting someone to respond to that order, you won’t find Dr. Omane getting involved.

“So, please, in the name of God, there are a lot of legitimate businesses you can do as an NDC member in this government. Don’t be the one to cause problems for Mahama’s government,” Tameklo stated.

Dr Apaak reaffirms government’s commitment to fulfilling educational promises

0

Deputy Minister for Education, Dr Clement Apaak, has reiterated the government’s commitment to honoring promises made to Ghana’s educational sector.

The deputy minister indicated that the government’s policy to support students in tertiary institutions is two-fold: covering first-year academic fees and paying the fees for students with disabilities.

Dr Apaak further stated that funds have been allocated by the government, adding that these resources will be made available to implement the necessary measures.

“What I know—and what the Minister has said—is that the commitment is being fulfilled. I say it is being fulfilled because, at the time students were reporting to school, the John Dramani Mahama-led NDC government had not yet presented a budget,” he explained on Joy FM, adding that relevant agencies and institutions are being engaged to ensure the implementation.

Dr Apaak also stated, “You heard the Minister clearly: we expect to spend not less than 340 million Ghana cedis on this exercise. That is the baseline we are working from—it could be more, it could be less, depending on enrollment.”

He continued, “The allocation has been made, and we expect that the resources will be available to fulfill this commitment, as we know for a fact.”

The tall list candidates will seek to run the affairs of the Olympic movement for the next four years in a highly anticipated-elective congress.

Renowned Sports Administrator and former Captain of Ghana’s Hockey National team, Richard Akpokavie would be in contention for the presidency position against Mr. Michael Odum Aggrey, former President of Ghana Golf Association.

We will reduce the cost of borrowing; President Mahama assures businesses

0

By Iddi Yire

Mpraeso (E/R), April 19, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama on Saturday assured businesses that the Government will reduce the cost of borrowing by reforming credit systems and supporting blended finance instruments.

This is to stimulate economic growth and to help strengthen businesses and industries.

The President also announced that the Government would retool the financial sector to serve the real economy—not just government borrowing or speculative trading.

President Mahama stated this in his opening remarks at the Second Edition of the Kwahu Business Forum at Mpraeso in the Kwahu South District of the Eastern Region.

The Kwahu Business Forum, which is the brain child of President Mahama, is a major initiative to foster entrepreneurship and support the growth of Ghana’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

It is a direct response to the government’s vision of expanding Ghana’s private sector capacity, especially in the agro-processing and manufacturing sectors of the economy.

As a non-partisan national development agenda, the Kwahu Business Forum brings together business owners, industrialists, investors, start-ups, and major industry players to network, share experiences, and explore ways to raise capital or leverage available products from financial institutions.

The maiden forum, held during the 2024 Easter festivities at Mpraeso, the capital of Kwahu South District of the Eastern region, successfully brought together business magnates and young entrepreneurs who shared their experiences and expectations with the then-candidate John Mahama.

The Second Edition of the Kwahu Business Forum is on the theme “The Future of Business: The Role of the Financial Sector”.

“We will also launch a national venture capital fund to support youth-and women-led businesses, and introduce regulatory reforms that encourage banks and financial institutions to lend to productive sectors of the economy,” he said.

The President reiterated that financial inclusion would be at the heart of this agenda.

“No economy can grow if its people remain excluded from formal financial systems. We will work with banks, fintechs, and mobile money operators to expand access to financial services, particularly in rural and underserved communities.”

The President said the future of business in Ghana must be digital, green, and inclusive.

“We are entering logistics, and public safety—for businesses to operate around the clock. This will boost an era where digital infrastructure is as important as roads and bridges,” he said.

President Mahama said as part of the Government’s 24-Hour Economy strategy, they would create the conditions—through reliable electricity, productivity, create jobs, and expand opportunity across the country; stating that however, transformation also requires skills.

This, he said was why they were introducing a Jobs and Skills

Compact—bringing together government, industry, and academia to align education and training with the needs of the job market.

President Mahama said the Government would provide incentives to companies that create sustainable, decent jobs, and support youth entrepreneurship to unlock the creativity of the young people.

“Our vision is a Ghana where no young person needs to leave their hometown in search of opportunity. Where communities like Mpraeso, Nkawkaw, and Abetifi become hubs of innovation, enterprise, and decent work,” President Mahama said.

“To truly enable business growth, we must go beyond economic policy. It requires a firm commitment to rule of law, political stability, and respect for contracts and property rights.”

President Mahama said it also required a responsive, corruption-free public service that would see the private sector not just as a revenue source, but as a development partner.

“That is why fora like this are essential. They allow us to listen, to engage, and to create policies that work. Your insights and innovations are critical to the national reset we envision,” the President said.

He noted that the future of Ghana would not be determined by Government alone; and that it would be determined by their ability to build partnerships—between state and private sector, between finance and innovation, and between leadership and the people.

“The Kwahu Business Forum is more than an event—it is a call to action. Let us work together to build a Ghana that is competitive, productive, and inclusive. A Ghana that creates opportunity for all.” The President stated.

Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, Kwahu Abetifihene and Adontenhene of Kwahu Traditional Area, urged Kwahu citizens to take advantage of the Forum, to have more businessmen and women from the area.

He appealed to President Mahama to complete the only Government Hospital project at the Kwahu Traditional Area, sited at Abetifi, which was started by his previous administration nine years, but came to standstill following a change in Government in 2017.

GNFS calls for boreholes to boost firefighting

0

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has emphasised the need for alternative water sources to support firefighting operations, warning that reliance on hydrants alone may prove insufficient in emergencies.

A fire hydrant is a pipe in the street from which firefighters can obtain water for putting out a fire.

Speaking on the issue in an interview on the Channel One Newsroom on Saturday April 19, Greater Accra Regional Commander ACFO II Rashid Nisawu advised communities and authorities to prioritise sinking boreholes and collecting water for firefighting purposes.

He cautioned that while hydrants might be available, there is always a risk that they could run dry when needed most.

Nisawu said “My advice is that we should try and sink boreholes and collect water, make them available for fire fighting. If we are not lucky the day of reckoning unfortunately the hydrants may be available but may be dry.”

His remarks come amid the Madina Redco fire incident that claimed one life and destroyed over 100 structures. It is also due to ongoing concerns about Ghana’s firefighting infrastructure, particularly in densely populated areas where access to water sources can be challenging.

The GNFS continues to advocate for improved preparedness, urging proactive measures to mitigate the impact of fire outbreaks.

Authorities and stakeholders are expected to deliberate on sustainable solutions to ensure that adequate water supplies remain accessible for firefighting operations.

Minority Leader lauds Mahama for Kwahu Business Forum

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has lauded President John Dramani Mahama, for initiating the Kwahu Business Forum, which continues to shape the future of business in Ghana.

“This initiative is crucial not only for promoting dialogue but also translating those conversations into tangible actions that can propel us toward a brighter economic future,” the Minority Leader stated.

He was delivering his remarks at the opening of the Second Edition of the Kwahu Business Forum at Mpraeso in the Kwahu South District of the Eastern Region.

The Kwahu Business Forum, which is the brainchild of President Mahama, is a major initiative to foster entrepreneurship and support the growth of Ghana’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The Second Edition of the Forum is on the theme: “The Future of Business: The Role of the Financial Sector”.

Mr Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the contribution of all the industry players, who were present at the Forum, saying, “Let this be the beginning of sustained support for entrepreneurship in Ghana, so that together, we can forge a path toward a brighter and more prosperous economic future”.

He urged entrepreneurs and businesses at the Forum to take full advantage of the opportunities before them, encouraging them to boldly invest in their dreams, as the foundation of a collective future

Mr Afenyo-Markin urged political leaders to remain committed towards supporting local entrepreneurs and the private sector and to work together to build a business ecosystem where success is driven by merit, hard work, and opportunity, not by politics.

He described the Forum as an important platform that continued to inspire fresh thinking about Ghana’s economic future, while reminding Ghanaians that the future of their nation was deeply intertwined with the active participation of the private sector, particularly the strength of its indigenous businesses and the vision of its entrepreneurs.

He reiterated that Ghana’s economic future would depend heavily on the strength, agility, and resilience that were timely and foundational.

Mr Afenyo-Markin said no economy could thrive where access to finance remained for their indigenous enterprises to scale up and succeed.

“When we empower local businesses with the capital and confidence they need to grow, we do more than boost productivity; we open up new pathways for job creation,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said.

In a country where youth unemployment remained one of its most urgent national challenges, building a strong and inclusive financial ecosystem was not just an economic imperative; it was a social one as well.

He said as someone who had spent over two decades not only in public service but also in private and the weight of challenges that every Ghanaian entrepreneur must carry.

“I understand what often-unpredictable road of private enterprise, and so I know firsthand the thrill of opportunity it means to raise capital, to innovate through constraint, and to stay resilient in the face of enterprise, I understand the hurdles that define the entrepreneurial journey,” he said.

Mr Afenyo-Markin said he had walked the shifting market dynamics and a fragile entrepreneurial ecosystem, and these personal experiences had deepened his conviction that entrepreneurship was not just a livelihood, but it was nation-building.

Illegal slums serving galamsey operators razed down – Western Region Forestry Boss

0

The Western Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, Nana Poku Bosompim, has confirmed the successful demolition of major illegal slums that served as safe havens for illegal mining activities in the region.

Speaking on JoyNews’ on Saturday, April 19, Mr. Bosompim stated that the slums, including Abrewa Ne Nkran, Jerusalem, and another near Wassa Nkran, were completely destroyed during a coordinated raid.

Mr. Bosompim, who has been in the role for just two months, noted that his predecessor had already flagged the area as a major threat.

Despite previous raids—three in total—the slum residents always managed to regroup. Determined to put a stop to it, the new Regional Manager made it his top priority.

“My priority after taking over as the regional manager was to make sure that the slums were removed so that we could save that portion of the forest. So, quickly, we put a team together. We had the support of the General Officer Commanding Southern Command, who released officers to support the forestry officers. And as you heard from the operation last week Monday, we were able to raid the camp and completely eradicate those slums—not just the one at Abrewa Ne Nkran, but also the second, bigger one called Jerusalem, and the third one around the Wassa Nkran area.

“So, as of today, I can tell you those illegal slums that served as a haven for illegal miners have been razed down. They are all lying in desolate ruins,” he said.

He disclosed that the slum had become a magnet not just for Ghanaian illegal miners but also for nationals from about eight different West African countries.

Despite the raid, Mr. Bosompim warned that the threat of reoccupation remains. “Just a day after razing the area, we noticed attempts to rebuild. This time, they were laying foundations and using cement blocks, not wood. It shows they are determined to return,” he said.

To prevent the resurgence of these illegal settlements, the Forestry Commission has introduced a new strategy involving regular patrols and tighter surveillance, noting, “We’re not going to let this happen again. The goal is to ensure that these camps are never rebuilt.”

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish a National Venture Capital Fund aimed at supporting youth and women-led businesses across Ghana.

Speaking at the second Kwahu Business Forum on Saturday, April 19, 2025, the President revealed that the fund will serve as a catalyst for entrepreneurial growth, providing critical financial support to help young people and women scale their businesses.

He further noted that the government will introduce regulatory reforms to encourage banks and financial institutions to increase lending to the productive sectors of the economy.

“We will launch a National Venture Capital Fund to support youth and women-led businesses and introduce regulatory reforms that encourage banks and financial institutions to lend to the productive sectors of the economy. In all of this, financial inclusion will be at the heart of our agenda. No economy can grow if its people remain excluded from the formal financial system,” he said.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s private sector and ensure inclusive economic development.

Devastating rainstorm destroys properties in Upper West

0

A rainstorm has wreaked havoc in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

The storm which occurred on the evening of Friday, 18th April 2025, ripped off roofs, uprooted trees, knocked down electricity poles, and damaged several buildings across the municipality.

Among the worst-hit was a popular local restaurant, Dine in Delicacies, which suffered major destruction when a giant tree collapsed on the structure. The restaurant was operational at the time of the incident, with nine people inside.
The owner, Hajia Latifa Ibrahim Dodoo, who was present at the scene, said the crash caused panic, but only one person was briefly trapped and later rescued unhurt.

“Two fridges and other vital equipment were destroyed,” she told reporters.

The rainstorm also struck down electricity poles, plunging several sections of the municipality into darkness. One of such affected areas includes the SSNIT Residential Area.

Institutions were not spared by the storm. At Naa Momory Technical and Vocational School, the Vice Principal in charge of Academics, Hussein Yasir, expressed distress over the extensive damage.
“It lasted about 15 to 16 minutes, but the destruction was heavy. Our fashion department, ICT block, HOD offices, and parts of the dormitory have all been ripped off,” he stated.

He said the school is in dire need of help, particularly as students are expected to resume in just a few days.

“We are pleading with the Municipal Chief Executive, the Regional Minister, and the nation at large to come to our aid. We’re already struggling with infrastructure, and this disaster has made it worse,” he lamented.

In response to the incident, a team from the Upper West Regional office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), led by Director Maxwell Emmanuel, visited the site to begin preliminary assessments.

Emmanuel confirmed that his outfit had earlier received a letter indicating the tree posed a risk and needed to be cut down, but the necessary action had not been taken before the disaster occurred.
“We received a distress call that a tree had fallen on a restaurant. My team, under the instruction of the Regional Minister and in collaboration with the Wa Municipal Chief Executive, quickly moved to the scene. Unfortunately, a prior warning was not acted upon in time,” he said.

Emmanuel revealed that more distress calls had been received from other parts of the municipality. He said NADMO, in partnership with the Ghana National Fire Service, would begin work to clear debris and conduct a full assessment to inform subsequent relief interventions.
However, he admitted that NADMO’s regional stores currently have no relief supplies available for immediate distribution.

“We’ll first mobilise support from local sources before reaching out to our national office. Once our assessment is complete, we will act swiftly to assist those affected,” he stated.

Also at the scene was the newly confirmed Wa Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Issah Nura Danwanaa, who described the event as his “baptism of fire” following his confirmation just a day earlier.

“I was in a meeting receiving visitors when I was called about this disaster. I immediately contacted the Municipal Response Team and came here to assess the damage,” he explained.
He assured of immediate municipal support.

“We will engage the fire service to help remove the debris and involve the police to secure the premises. After that, we’ll return to the office to plan further support,” he said.

In Wa West, Member of Parliament, Peter Lanchene Toobu toured devastated communities, describing the incident as a stark reminder of the worsening effects of climate change.
“This storm has left many people homeless. Properties have been destroyed, electric poles broken, and roofs ripped off. Climate change is real, and we must begin to act differently,” he told journalists.

Toobu expressed concern over NADMO’s limited resources but remained hopeful about improvements.

Ghana Deputy Interior Minister Urges Immigration Law Overhaul Amid Migration Concerns

Deputy Interior Minister Ebenezer Terlarbi has called for an urgent review of Ghana’s Immigration Act 573 (2000) to address mounting migration challenges, citing the need to harmonize economic growth with national security.

His appeal came during the inauguration of a community-funded immigration office in Kwahu Aduamoah, a town grappling with rising foreign national populations and related regulatory pressures.

Terlarbi emphasized Ghana’s reputation as a stable destination for migrants seeking economic opportunities but warned that unmanaged inflows risk straining local resources. “While we welcome foreign nationals, balancing economic development and security remains critical,” he stated, directing the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to modernize protocols under Act 573 to tackle issues like irregular migration and cross-border crime.

The newly unveiled immigration facility, funded and constructed by Aduamoah chiefs and residents, underscores community efforts to bolster border management. Comptroller General of the GIS, DCI Samuel Basintele Amadu, praised the initiative, urging foreign nationals to “respect local laws and cultural norms.” He reiterated the GIS’s commitment to enforcing regulations but acknowledged gaps in existing frameworks that require legislative updates.

Meanwhile, Kwahu Benkumhene Nana Ahea Tutu Brempong shifted focus to stalled infrastructure projects, appealing to the government to resume road construction halted for four years. “Security and development go hand in hand. We built this office to aid national efforts, but our roads remain neglected,” he said, highlighting unresolved grievances despite community contributions to public projects.

The call to revise immigration laws coincides with broader debates on how Ghana manages its open-door policy amid regional instability and economic disparities. Analysts note that while migrant labor fuels key sectors like agriculture and mining, localized tensions over resource allocation and cultural integration persist. The Aduamoah office symbolizes grassroots resolve to address these challenges, yet the delayed road project reflects lingering disparities in state support for border communities.

As authorities weigh legal reforms, the dual demands of security and equitable development loom large, testing Ghana’s approach to migration in an era of increasing globalization and domestic fiscal constraints.

Media General drags NPP executive to police over threats to journalists

Alhaji Osman Masawudu, the third national vice-chairman of the New Patriotic Party Alhaji Osman Masawudu, the third national vice-chairman of the New Patriotic Party

Media General, a Ghanaian media organisation, has officially filed a complaint with the Ghana Police Service against Alhaji Osman Masawudu, the third national vice-chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This action comes in response to what the company describes as a deliberate act of aggression and a threat to the safety of its journalists.

The incident occurred at a recent NPP press conference, where Alhaji Masawudu was captured in a video forcefully pushing down a TV3 microphone placed in front of him.

The action, described by Media General as “unprovoked”, took place in full view of party officials and media personnel.

The matter escalated after the NPP executive reportedly granted an interview to Kumasi-based ASHH FM, where he issued a direct threat, warning that Media General journalists would be physically assaulted if they attend any future NPP events.

Subsequently, in a statement released on Friday, April 18, 2025, the company expressed grave concern over what it called an attack not just on its brand, but on the very foundation of press freedom in Ghana.

The company said such conduct undermines the constitutional rights of journalists and poses a threat to the safety of media professionals across the country.

“In view of this, Media General has lodged an official complaint with the Ghana Police Service, urging a full investigation and action against Alhaji Osman Masawudu to guarantee the safety of our journalists and media personnel in the discharge of their lawful duties,” the statement added.

They thus seek a thorough investigation into the matter and appropriate action to ensure that their journalists can carry out their duties without fear or intimidation.

The company also called on civil society groups, media stakeholders, and the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to stand in solidarity in defending the rights and freedoms of the press.

Despite the disturbing incident, they reaffirmed their commitment to impartial, courageous, and professional journalism, saying they will not be intimidated or silenced.

The development comes at a time when concerns are growing over the safety of journalists in the country.

President Mahama opens up on trusting the wrong people in business

0

At the second edition of the Kwahu Business Forum, President John Dramani Mahama shared some challenges Ghanaian entrepreneurs face when trust and reliability are compromised in business.

He recalled a story from his early years in politics when he decided to support a relative by buying a bus to start a transport business, a decision that ended in failure.

“I bought a bus for a relative to run transport business so that he can look after the family at home and stop disturbing me on my small parliamentary salary. And they gave it to a driver who was a relatively good anytime you saw the bus, the bus had more load on top of it than in the bus”, he narrated.

He detailed how the axle of the bus eventually broke down, marking the start of a frustrating ordeal.

“The axle broke down, and it was the most regrettable experience in my life. When the axle broke down, they came to me to buy a new axle, anytime the bus broke down, they would come to me to come and repair it. And it was costing me more to repair the bus,” he stated.

He mentioned this incident to point out how difficult it is to find trustworthy people to work with these days.

“This driver used to live in the family house. While he was driving the bus, he procured the land, he started to build a house. The house reached lintel level when the bus finally broke down, and by then I had had enough. So, I refused to repair the bus and decided to dispose of it. And so, I sold the bus.

“This was like several years, maybe more than 10 years ago. And since I sold the bus, where the building reached lintel level, it is still at lintel level even till today. And so, what he says is very serious, getting trusted people to work with”, he stated.

The two-day forum, which is themed, “The Future of Business: The Role of the Financial Sector,” is designed to serve as a platform for dialogue between financial institutions and private sector players.

It convened policymakers, entrepreneurs, and investors to explore innovative strategies for economic development and private sector empowerment in Ghana and across Africa.

The second edition of the Kwahu Business Forum has successfully taken place at the Mpraeso Social Centre in the Kwahu South District of the Eastern Region.

Held under the theme “The Future of Business: The Role of the Financial Sector,” the forum served as a strategic platform to ignite entrepreneurial growth and strengthen the capacity of Ghana’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

An initiative championed by President John Dramani Mahama, the Kwahu Business Forum forms a core part of a broader, non-partisan national development agenda aimed at expanding private sector capacity, particularly within agro-processing and manufacturing.

The initiative aligns with the government’s vision of building a more resilient and inclusive economy through SME empowerment.

The forum brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including business owners, industrialists, investors, start-ups, and key players in the financial industry. One of the highlights of the event was the presence of the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who added a valuable bipartisan perspective to the discussions.

This year’s event builds on the momentum of the maiden edition, which was held in 2024 during the Easter festivities in Mpraeso.

Dr Apaak reaffirms gov’t’s commitment to fulfilling educational promises

Latest UEW suicide case and why Ghana urgently needs a suicide prevention plan

0

What happens when a country is staring at an apparent mental health crisis but its people just don’t know what to do?

What do you do when a loved one informs you they are considering suicide? I want you to ponder your answer as you read through this piece. In Africa, the most common reaction is to call out the person with suicidal thoughts who has just opened up about how they are feeling.

“Don’t be silly!” – they’ll be told if lucky. If they are male, the default is to question where the potency of their masculinity has gone. “Are you not a man?” – they’ll be asked. Often even, the person is grilled over their reason for feeling suicidal. Almost to say there are stronger reasons for considering suicide or instances when it’s okay to take one’s own life.

Questions like: “Are you the first person to suffer a heartbreak?” or “why kill yourself over a girl?” as seen in the many public reactions to the unfortunate passing of Nicholas Kumi Dankwah – a freshman at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) in Ghana.

Nicholas allegedly hanged himself in his room at a university hostel after his 3-month old relationship with his girlfriend went south. A purported suicide note he left behind indicates he tried everything to make the relationship work, albeit unsuccessfully. This comes less than two years after a third year student in the same university succumbed to suicide.

As news of this latest incident went viral, it became apparent that the deceased might have opened up to someone about his suicidal thoughts, especially to his estranged girlfriend.

In fact, a photo which has since gone viral shows Nicholas was on a video call with his friends, essentially watching him go through with the act. Without prejudice, this takes me back to my opening question – what do you do when a loved one tells you they are considering suicide?

In the United Kingdom, Samaritans can be contacted on freephone 116 123. In the US, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline on 988 or text HOME to 741741 to connect with a crisis counsellor. In Australia, the crisis support service Lifeline is 13 11 14.

In Ghana, who do you call? I have seen so many posts and hashtags online encouraging people to speak up or open up to someone when they feel distressed. Unfortunately, not many people have the capacity to process or even know what to do with such information. So what is the point in anyone speaking up when the people they could supposedly speak to, do not have the capacity to handle the information?

While you continue to ponder your answer, here’s another question for you. What will you do when a loved one says they have severe chest pains or a deep cut to their wrist? Of course, even without a medical degree, or specialist training, calling an ambulance immediately or trying to get them to the hospital for treatment is at the top of the list of things to do.

Despite being strongly linked with mental disorders such as depression and chronic anxiety, many suicides happen impulsively during crisis situations when people feel incapable of dealing with the pressures of life. This may be financial issues, relationship problems, or loss (of family or friends).

More than 720,000 people die by suicide every year, with up to 73 percent of these deaths happening in low and middle income countries like Ghana. According to the World Health Organisation, suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among young people aged 15 – 29 years.

It is instructive to note that for every suicide case, there are many failed attempts and even more people who considered harming themselves. Given the numbers involved, there is no denying the fact that this is a major public health situation needing urgent attention.

So why does it feel like a helpless situation when we hear someone contemplating suicide?

It is, in part, because of the absence of a suicide prevention plan in Ghana – a national strategy which will among other things empower individuals, institutions, communities and the government to adequately respond to suicide as the crisis which it is fast becoming.

The government, courtesy a private members bill sponsored by Madina MP Francis-Xavier Sosu, decriminalised attempted suicide only in April 2023.While that is a crucial first step towards suicide prevention, Ghana is dealing with the unintended consequence of treating suicide as a criminal offence – the struggle to seek help when feeling suicidal even where help exists – still lingers.

We must understand that we are all different people, some stronger and more resilient than others. So much so that, even after considering the thought of how empty life will be after losing a loved one, they are able to pick themselves up and move on. But not everyone makes it past that phase without help. That is why making suicide prevention resources available and accessible at every level in the society cannot and should not be considered secondary as it currently is.

With timely, evidence-based and often low-cost interventions, suicides can be prevented. This must begin in schools, work places, churches and every other group or groups of places where people interact.

The WHO recommends coordination and collaboration among multiple sectors of society, including the health sector and other sectors such as education, labour, agriculture, business, justice, law, defence, politics and the media. These efforts, it says must be comprehensive and integrated given the multifaceted nature of suicide.

In the case of Ghana, government must immediately initiate the processes for the drafting and implementation of a national suicide prevention strategy. This strategy must among other things, include:

  • Duty of care and mandatory safeguarding policies: This will require organisations to institute clear monitoring and reporting channels including gatekeeper training programmes where managers, teachers, and other individuals in positions of authority are trained to identify early signs of withdrawal and distress for timely interventions. These programmes increase awareness and confidence in identifying at-risk individuals, especially in workplace and school settings, and directing them to appropriate support services.
  • Brief Interventions and Follow-Up Contacts: Simple, structured conversations paired with ongoing contact – such as phone calls, text messages, or visits – can have a significant impact in preventing suicide. Often used after someone has presented in crisis or been discharged from care, these follow up contacts provide connection and continuity. This could reduce repeat attempts and promote long-term engagement with mental health services.
  • School-Based Mental Health Education: We must invest in integrating mental health education into school curricula to equip young people with essential skills to understand, manage, and talk about mental health. This helps to reduce stigma, encourage help-seeking behavior, and enable early identification of students who may be struggling.
  • Digital Tools and Crisis Helplines: As we transition into an increasingly virtual society, online mental health tools and 24/7 crisis helplines provide accessible, anonymous support for individuals experiencing distress. These platforms can include self-assessment tools, chat support, and immediate connection to trained professionals.

It’s not a guarantee that people will not succumb to suicide but, these strategies, when implemented at scale as part of a deliberate national suicide strategy, will present would-be victims with a fighting chance and the appropriate support system to go through it.

While we wait for this government-backed intervention, I ask again — what do you do when a loved one informs you they are considering suicide?

CPP demands reassignment of Kumasi mayor over ‘inhumane’ remarks

0

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to immediately reassign the Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, following his controversial threat to use corporal punishment against traders flouting city directives.

The Party described the Mayor’s comments threatening to “beat” traders who defied the Assembly’s order as “inhumane” and “irresponsible,” arguing that such an approach to sanitising Kumasi’s central business district renders him unfit for office.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong-Kumankumah, the CPP’s Flagbearer in the 2024 Presidential Election, firmly condemned the Mayor’s comments, insisting that the use of corporal punishment is unacceptable and ineffective in addressing urban challenges.

“The welfare of humanity should be at the centre of every policy that we implement,” she said, urging the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to prioritise dialogue and stakeholder engagement in its decongestion efforts.

As an alternative approach, Nana Sarpong-Kumankumah recommended the creation of employment opportunities for women and the youth as a long-term solution to the congestion challenges caused by petty trading.

“Carrying things on the head and sitting in the scorching sun to sell is inhumane and shameful for this nation. It is the responsibility of the Government to create decent employment for the people. We have failed the people,” she stressed.

The CPP’s call follows a recent press conference held by the Kumasi Mayor, where he announced a two-week ultimatum for traders operating along pavements and roadsides in the central business district to vacate the area.

He warned that failure to comply would attract severe sanctions, including threats of physical assault, a statement that has since drawn sharp criticism from various quarters.

In addressing the broader issue, the CPP urged the KMA to adopt a data-driven approach in tackling street trading, stressing the need for proper planning.

“Cleaning Kumasi should be backed by data. We should know the number of people on the streets and what they do. We cannot address the problem without proper planning backed by data,” Nana Sarpong-Kumankumah added.
