Banks reported 716 fraud cases in 2024 – BoG report

Bank of Ghana's new headquarters Bank of Ghana’s new headquarters

The Bank of Ghana report has disclosed that in 2024, banks reported a total count of 716 fraud cases.

This indicates a 26% drop from the count of 969 cases in 2023.

According to the report, the downward trend in fraud cases can be attributed to the improvement of internal controls within the banking sector.

The report stated that fraud prevention and detection remain a key element of BoG’s effort in maintaining financial integrity, adding that it is, therefore, mandatory for all banks to report fraud cases to the BoG as and when they occur.

The data obtained from the industry showed improvement within the bank and SDI sectors.

The report also said although banks and SDIs showed a decline in the number of cases reported in 2024, as compared to 2023, the count of fraud in the Payment Service Providers (PSP) sector increased in 2024.

The data also shows a decline in the value at risk of the Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions (SDI) sector in 2024 as compared to 2023.

Overall, the aggregate data collated from the three sub-sectors indicate that the count of fraud cases increased to 16,733 in 2024 from 15,865 in 2023, reflecting a 5% rise.

These cases correspond to a total value at risk of approximately GH¢99 million in 2024 as compared to GH¢88 million in 2023, indicating an increase of 13%.

Analysis of the 2024 data showed notable increases in forgery and manipulation of documents, and impersonation/identity theft.

The data, however, suggested significant decreases in cyber/e-mail fraud, fraudulent withdrawals and cash theft/suppression.

Zelensky cuts short South Africa visit after Russian attack on Kyiv

0

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky and South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has cancelled part of his first visit to South Africa after an overnight Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv.

At least nine people were killed and more than 80 injured, including children, in the attack, local officials said.

Zelensky said in a post on X that he would return to Ukraine “immediately” after meeting his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa as part of his trip to ramp up diplomatic efforts.

He added that rescue operations were ongoing following the overnight attack and there was “significant destruction”.

“It has been 44 days since Ukraine agreed to a full ceasefire and a halt to strikes,” he continued, referring to an earlier agreement between the US and Ukraine in March over a proposed temporary ceasefire. “The strikes must be stopped immediately and unconditionally.”

Zelensky’s visit to South Africa marks a diplomatic breakthrough for the Ukrainian leader in his efforts to counter Russia’s growing influence in Africa.

The state visit would have been unimaginable just two years ago, when President Ramaphosa led a delegation of African leaders to Kyiv on a self-styled peace mission.

At the time, South Africa’s refusal to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a source of frustration for Kyiv.

But the geopolitical landscape has fundamentally changed since that meeting, and both countries now have a lot more in common.

Both find themselves increasingly at odds with Washington.

The US was one of Ukraine’s closest allies until the re-election of Donald Trump in November. Now Ukraine is keen to broaden its pool of international partners – particularly in Africa where many countries have strong links with Russia.

South Africa has also suffered from strained relations with Washington, which has expelled its ambassador and removed aid funding.

South Africa says its non-aligned position puts it in a prime position to help bring about a peace deal with Russia.

Trump on Wednesday accused the Ukrainian leader of harming peace negotiations, after Zelensky said Kyiv would not recognise Russian control of Crimea.

Ukraine has long said it will not give up Crimea, a southern peninsula illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.

Trump claimed a deal to end the war was “very close”, but that Zelensky’s refusal to accept US terms “will do nothing but prolong” the conflict.

Earlier, US Vice-President JD Vance laid out the US vision for a deal, saying it would “freeze the territorial lines close to where they are today”.

He said the deal would mean Ukraine and Russia “are both going to have to give up some of the territory they currently own” – without specifying what geographic concessions would have to be made.

When asked by reporters at the White House about whether the administration was looking to recognise Russia’s sovereignty over Crimea, Trump said he just wanted to see the war end.

Recognising Russia’s illegal occupation of Crimea would not only be politically impossible for Zelensky to accept, it would also be contrary to post-war international legal norms that borders should not be changed by force.

Burna Boy Sells Out England’s Biggest Indoor Arena in Landmark Concert

The concert was held just days after the 33-year-old made history by filling the 80,000-capacity Stade De France in Paris.

In his usual trailblazing manner, Grammy-winning superstar Burna Boy recently sold out The Co-op Manchester, England’s biggest indoor Arena.

The concert was held on 21 April, just days after the 33-year-old made history by filling the 80,000-capacity Stade De France in Paris.

Attracting over 23,500 fans, the show was bombarded with an electrifying, high-energy performance that reinforces Burna Boy’s global prominence

At his Manchester concert, Burna Boy thrilled fans with a rendition of the hit records with which he has built one of the most enviable touring repertoires for an African pop star.

The event marked Burna Boy’s sole UK arena performance of the year and formed part of his ‘I Told Them’ tour, a significant milestone in his career, named after his 2023 album, which was a major success and a turning point in his career.

The audience was treated to a masterclass in stagecraft, featuring dynamic visuals, pyrotechnics, dancers, and a carefully curated setlist that showcased highlights from his expansive discography.

Like his show in Paris, the Odogwu brought out Nigerian Gen Z sensation Shallipopi, with whom he performs the remix of his single ‘Laho’, which is quickly becoming a global viral song.

Joining him on stage was Joé Dwèt Filé to perform their collaboration ‘4KampeII’ after they both performed at the Stade De France.

Following his sold-out Manchester concert, the hitmaker will return to the stage as a headliner at the Jazz & Heritage Festival New Orleans on 24 April 2025.

Gratitude

Responding to the experience, Burna Boy expressed heartfelt appreciation to his UK fans, saying:

“Co-op Live was a movie last night! You all brought that big stadium energy and mad vibes from start to finish. My only UK arena show, and we turned it into something unforgettable”.

2025 is already off to an eventful start for the superstar, who has announced a new album titled ‘No Sign of Weakness’, which is expected to be released later in the year.

This will be his eighth LP.

Burna Boy released’ Update’ to raise the anticipation for his 2025 album, which is already a hot topic among music enthusiasts.

Burna Boy has never been one to back down. Each album has been a hit. His last album, ‘I Told Them’, has enjoyed commercial success and has become a massive part of his performance lineup.

Appointment of NDC 2024 parliamentary candidate as Tamale Teaching Hospital CEO sparks controversy

0

President Mahama’s swift appointment of Dr. Abubakar Bawah Abdulai — an NDC parliamentary candidate for 2024 — as the new CEO of Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) has stirred serious debate, especially coming just a day after the abrupt dismissal of Dr. Adam Atiku.

The shakeup follows a heated visit by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, who stormed the hospital unannounced on Monday.

Mahama was fair in CJ suspension — Vanderpuye tells critics

0

The National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has mounted a strong defence of President John Dramani Mahama’s handling of the Chief Justice’s suspension, describing the process as fair and procedurally sound.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Thursday, April 24, Vanderpuye rejected accusations made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which earlier condemned the President’s decision as “unconstitutional, absurd, and repugnant.”

The NPP’s criticism followed President Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo after a prima facie case was established based on three separate petitions seeking her removal.

“If there was a real democracy capture, it was under Nana Akufo-Addo. Nana Akufo-Addo took advantage of the lacuna in the Constitution. I think people should admire President Mahama for what he has done,” Vanderpuye asserted.

He highlighted that President Mahama’s actions were not only consistent with constitutional directives but also went above and beyond in terms of fairness and transparency.

“When I heard people talking about the fact that if you are exercising discretionary power, you must be fair and just in this particular instance, President Mahama has been fair,” he said.

“The President has even gone beyond the boundaries of fairness. He has allowed the Chief Justice to see the petition before she appeared before the committee. He has allowed her to prepare herself adequately before she meets the committee,” Vanderpuye added.

President Mahama’s decision, announced on April 22, was taken in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution after consultation with the Council of State. It marks a critical juncture in Ghana’s judicial system, as the country’s highest-ranking judicial officer now faces a formal inquiry into her conduct.

Adding to the already tense atmosphere, the Office of the President confirmed on April 23 that it had received two new petitions also seeking the Chief Justice’s removal, escalating what is fast becoming a deeply divisive issue in Ghana’s legal and political landscape.

I Didn’t Lose Over Muslim Faith – Bawumia

0

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

The 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer and former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has firmly rejected claims that his religious background contributed to the NPP’s loss in the 2024 general election.

Speaking at a post-election party engagement in Accra ahead of the nationwide “Thank You Tour”, Dr. Bawumia called for unity within the NPP and insisted that internal voter apathy—not religious bias—was the decisive factor in the party’s defeat.

“Let us be clear: this was not about religion,” Dr. Bawumia stated and added, “People said we lost because our candidate was Muslim. But this doesn’t make sense and is not backed by data. Ghana is not that kind of country.”

Citing internal analysis and independent research findings, Dr. Bawumia explained that in many constituencies across the country, he outperformed Christian NPP parliamentary candidates—disproving the notion that his faith led to electoral setbacks.

Dr. Bawumia referenced examples like Rev. Ntim Fordjour’s Assin South Constituency, where he garnered more votes than the Christian MP, underscoring that religion had little to no bearing on voters’ choices.

“If voters were rejecting me for being Muslim, I would not have done better than several Christian candidates in the same constituencies,” he added. “This is just propaganda that we must reject.”

According to him, all the research institutions came to the conclusion that the NPP’s loss was not an issue of religion.

“It is not an issue of tribe. Those issues have been ruled out in all the findings from different surveys that have been done,” he stressed.

“So as a party, I’m very, very happy that, and as a country, I’m very, very happy that religion and tribe have not entered our political discourse. We should not, therefore, allow people to come in to play propaganda with religion and tribe. We are one nation. We will all go together, and we will move whether we are Muslims or Christians. We’ll all work together for the good of this country, and that is how we should try to get everybody going forward,” Dr. Bawumia intimated.

Internal Apathy to Blame

According to Dr. Bawumia, the NPP lost approximately 2.1 million votes between the 2020 and 2024 elections, largely due to party supporters failing to show up at the polls.

“John Mahama gained just about 115,000 additional votes, but our numbers dropped by over two million. That’s the story. The issue is within us, not outside us,” he stressed.

He argued that the party’s greatest challenge lies in reenergising its base and rebuilding a more inclusive structure. He urged party leaders and supporters to reflect on the recommendations of the recently submitted election review report led by Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye.

Call for Party Unity and Structural Reforms

As part of efforts to rebuild the NPP, Dr. Bawumia announced a departure from the traditional solo “Thank You Tour” undertaken by losing candidates. Instead, he extended an open invitation to his former flagbearer primary contenders to join him on a nationwide unity tour.

“This time, it’s not about me. It’s about the party. I’ve invited my fellow aspirants to join me so we can present a united front to our supporters and to the nation,” he said, adding, “It’s not about primaries anymore—it’s about building a party that can win general elections.”

Dr. Bawumia also backed changes to the party’s delegate system, proposing reforms that would broaden participation in internal elections and give more members a voice in candidate selection.

“We must make the party stronger. If we unite, we will win 2028. If we don’t, we will fall short again,” he warned.

Echoing the words of his late mentor, Dr. Bawumia concluded, “United we stand, divided we fall. Let us choose unity. Let us build the machinery that can win—not just within the party, but for the nation.”

ESLA collections for 2024 underperforms by GH¢533 million

0

Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson

The Ministry of Finance 2024 Annual Report on the Management of Energy Sector Levies and Accounts has revealed that collections under the Energy Sector Levies Act (ESLA) fell short of the revised target by GH¢553.92 million, representing a 6% decline.

According to the report, despite it being an improvement over the 11% shortfall recorded in 2023, the 2024 performance continues a pattern of underperformance, with an 8% gap also recorded in 2022.

The ministry attributed the persistent underperformance to prevailing commercial and technical losses within the energy sector, alongside mounting unpaid invoices by consumers of petroleum and electricity.

These systemic issues, the report noted, continue to undermine the effectiveness of the levy.

In the report, an amount of GH¢9.59 billion was initially projected for collection in 2024.

However, this was revised downward to GH¢9.23 billion in the mid-year review of the budget following a downward adjustment of the non-oil nominal GDP, which in turn affected projections for the Road and Energy Fund Levies.

Despite the underperformance relative to the 2024 revised target, collections still marked a 12.1% increase over the 2023 target of GH¢8.23 billion.

Additionally, actual collections for 2024 closed at GH¢8.67 billion, underscoring the scale of the shortfall and the continuing challenges in the efficient collection and management of energy-related levies.

The report further disclosed that actual lodgments into ESLA accounts lagged behind collections by GH¢ 600.78 million, representing a 7% shortfall of the GHS 8.67 billion target.

Nonetheless the amount lodged exceeded that of 2023 by 17.4%.

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson responding to the findings stated that the ESLA performance figures are indicative of deep-seated challenges in the energy sector, which if unaddressed, pose broader macroeconomic risks.

“The updates on ESLA performance in the 2024 report are only a symptom of widespread malaise in the energy sector and the attendant risks it poses to the entire economy. What I know is that we can work harder and together to enable ESLA to fully achieve its purpose and advance energy security,” he said.

South Africa and Ukraine woo each other as relationships with Trump turn sour

0

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is on a historic visit to South Africa, signalling a dramatic improvement in the once-strained relations between the two nations.

The visit marks a diplomatic breakthrough for the Ukrainian leader in his efforts to counter Russia’s strong – and growing – influence in Africa.

“I’m sure that Russia will be annoyed by the visit, but I don’t think it can do much about it,” said Steven Gruzd of the South African Institute of International Relations think-tank.

But Russia disrupted Zelensky’s visit by carrying out an air strike on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, forcing him to announce that he will cut short the trip.

“I am cancelling part of the programme for this visit and will return to Ukraine immediately after the meeting with the President of South Africa,” Zelensky said on social media.

Apart from a brief stopover in Cape Verde in 2023 while flying to Argentina, this is Zelensky’s first visit to Africa since he became Ukraine’s president in 2019.

Ukraine grasped the diplomatic significance of African states, when many of them – including regional powerhouse South Africa – refused to condemn Russia’s full-scale invasion of its territory in 2022.

“Ukraine neglected the continent in terms of foreign policy, but it has changed that over the last three years, doubling its embassies from 10 to 20,” Mr Gruzd told the BBC.

“But it’s in a very crowded space – Russia, China, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates are all trying to increase their influence in Africa.”

Zelensky’s visit to South Africa at this point is especially significant, as Ukraine’s relationship with the US – its main weapons supplier – has soured since US President Donald Trump took office in January.

He briefly paused military aid, denounced Zelenksy as a “dictator”, and has accused Ukraine of being responsible for the war.

“Ukraine needs every bit of legitimacy it can get internationally – not just in Europe. Wars aren’t only won in the battlefield, but also in courts of public opinion around the world,” said Prof Siphamandla Zondi, a political analyst at the University of Johannesburg.

For South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, the visit is equally significant, as his country, too, is under intense pressure from the Trump administration.

“The US has turned diplomacy on its head,” Mr Gudz said, adding: “Everyone is looking for new friends.”

Ramaphosa sees Zelensky’s visit as an attempt to boost his credentials as a peacemaker, saying their talks will focus on efforts to find “a path to peace”.

The South African leader added that he and Putin had held a phone conversation ahead of Zelensky’s visit.

“We both affirmed the strong bilateral relations between our respective countries,” Ramaphosa said in a post on X.

“We further committed to working together towards a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict,” he added.

Ramaphosa first tried to assume the role of peacemaker in 2023 when he led a delegation of African leaders to both Kyiv and Moscow in an attempt to mediate an end to the conflict.

The initiative came as South Africa faced a backlash from then-US President Joe Biden’s administration, which questioned its professed neutrality in the conflict after it held a naval exercise with Russia and China.

Relations worsened after Washington’s then-ambassador to Pretoria accused South Africa of supplying arms and ammunition to Russia.

Ramaphosa later appointed a judge-led inquiry to investigate the allegation. It found no evidence to back up the ambassador’s claim, but relations between South Africa and the Biden administration remained strained.

South Africa’s ties with Russia have not been a sore point for Trump, as he too gets along with Putin and has been pushing Zelensky to make a deal with the Russian leader.

However, Trump’s relationship with South Africa has reached rock bottom over its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and for what he calls the “unjust and immoral practices” against the white-minority Afrikaner community – an allegation Ramaphosa’s government denies.

Prof Zondi said South Africa would have to ensure that Ramaphosa’s talks with Zelensky did not hurt its attempts to mend relations with the Trump administration.

“South Africa will want to explain that it is adding to the efforts to build peace, and its role is not in competition with that of [the] US,” he added.

The analyst said he also expected Ramaphosa to focus on strengthening trade ties with Ukraine, as South Africa’s economy was in crisis, with low growth and high unemployment.

“Any volume of trade, no matter how small, is critical for South Africa,” he said, adding that strong relations between the two nations could also benefit Ukraine in its efforts to extend its influence on the continent.

“South Africa could be Ukraine’s gateway to Africa because of its ports and financial systems,” Prof Zondi said.

If this happens, it would mark a new chapter in Ukraine-Africa relations, though not necessarily at the expense of Russia.

“Both Russia and Ukraine are the biggest exporters of cereals to Africa. Africa needs both. It cannot be expected to choose sides,” the analyst said.

“I Will Come After You” – Paul Adom-Otchere Issues Warning to Sam George Over TV Disruptions

0

Renowned broadcaster and host of Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom-Otchere, has launched a scathing attack on the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, accusing him of attempts to interfere with his current affairs program as reported by Ghana Web.

Adom-Otchere raised concerns over recurring technical disruptions on DSTV and YouTube whenever his show airs, hinting at a coordinated effort to limit public access to his broadcasts.

The journalist, known for his bold commentary, implied that the disruptions were not coincidental but rather deliberate acts aimed at silencing critical discourse.

In a video shared on social media, Adom-Otchere stated, “Every time we are on TV, then DSTV goes off… Why? What is this? Don’t they want people to hear what we are saying?”

His remarks suggest that political forces may be behind the interruptions, especially when sensitive or critical topics are being discussed on the program.

He singled out Minister Sam George in his address, warning him to desist from any alleged sabotage.

Referring to George, he said, “I will come after you. Don’t bring yourself.”

The statement has since stirred debate on social media, with many questioning whether the accusations are grounded in fact or political tension.

Adom-Otchere also criticized the supposed intolerance of opposing views, suggesting that even under more authoritarian regimes, media freedom wasn’t compromised to this extent.

The Minister is yet to publicly respond to the claims.

4 TV Personalities Appointed by President Mahama – And Their New Roles

These appointments demonstrate a deliberate effort to enhance public communication and bring media-savvy individuals into national leadership.

One of the most notable appointments is Ama Pratt, former General Manager of Pan African Television and host of The Couch with Ama Pratt. She now serves as Press Secretary to Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. With years of experience in political programming and media management, her appointment is seen as a strategic move to improve public engagement at the highest level of government.

Abeiku Santana, widely known for his presence in both radio and television, has been named Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority. He is expected to play a major role in revitalizing Ghana’s tourism sector, drawing on his influence and background in hospitality and communication.

Another familiar face, Kofi Okyere-Darko (KOD), has been appointed Director of Diaspora Affairs. Known for his work in broadcasting and fashion, KOD is expected to help deepen connections between the government and Ghanaians living abroad.

Shamima Muslim, a respected journalist and former Citi FM presenter, has been appointed Deputy Presidential Spokesperson. Her role is critical in shaping the administration’s messaging and ensuring timely, transparent communication with the public.

These appointments reflect a government that values influence, credibility, and the power of communication. By bringing experienced media professionals into the fold, President Mahama is signaling a shift toward a more engaging and accessible style of governance.

Dignitaries present included Juabenhene Nana Otuo Sereboe II, Asafohene Akyeamfuo Asafo Boakye Agyemang Bonsu, Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, and former Manhyia South MP Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh. Security representation came from Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Emmanuel Teye Cudjo and Brigadier General Matthew Opoku of the Ghana Armed Forces’ Central Command – underscoring the cross-sectoral significance of the Asantehene’s return.

The homecoming follows a well-deserved break taken in March after an exceptionally active period commemorating the 25th anniversary of Otumfuo’s enstoolment. The milestone celebrations had seen the king preside over grand durbars, undertake strategic international engagements, and participate in critical state functions that reinforced the Ashanti Kingdom’s cultural and political influence.

With the monarch’s return, Manhyia Palace is expected to resume its central role in Ashanti’s governance and cultural affairs. Observers note that this period may see the kingdom address pending traditional matters while continuing to strengthen its partnerships with national institutions maintaining the delicate balance between tradition and modernity that has characterized Otumfuo’s reign.

The elaborate welcome ceremony not only reaffirmed the enduring reverence for the Golden Stool but also highlighted the Ashanti Kingdom’s continued relevance in Ghana’s sociopolitical landscape. As the Asantehene settles back into his royal duties, attention turns to how his leadership will navigate both traditional expectations and contemporary governance challenges in the coming months.

CID Denies Claims of Police Officers’ Detention

0

By Gifty Amofa

Accra, April 24, GNA – The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has refuted viral media reports claiming police officers were detained for allegedly arresting a judge over a traffic offence.

“The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has sighted some media reports falsely claiming that some Police officers were detained for arresting a judge for a traffic offence.

“We wish to categorically state that the claim is not just false but is baseless and without merit,” a statement issued by the CID said.

The CID explained that on April 7, 2025, it received a petition from a Circuit Court Judge alleging that four officers from the Adenta Divisional Police Command, led by Inspector Godwin Dey, harassed her, assaulted her court clerk, and wrongfully towed her vehicle from the Adenta Court Complex to the Adenta Police Station.

“She further noted that though a formal complaint was lodged at the Adenta Divisional Command she had not yet received a response.”

The statement said the CID launched an investigation and invited Inspector Dey, Inspector Francis Adjei, General Sergeant Dasebre Oti Boateng, and General Corporal Jonah Ajubulisa to headquarters to provide their accounts.

It clarified that the officers left immediately after their statements were taken.

“At no point were the officers detained as has been falsely reported,” it stated.

“We therefore urge the public to disregard the publication and treat it as false and without any basis.”

The Police Administration assured that investigations would continue in line with established procedures.

“We would like to assure the general public that, whereas the Police Administration will stand-by its officers who follow the rules in the discharge of their lawful duties, any reported incidents of misconduct by officers towards members of the public will be promptly investigated and the necessary actions taken.”

CJ suspension could lead to ‘democracy capture’ — Seth Acheampong

0

Former Eastern Regional Minister and senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Seth Acheampong, has cautioned against what he terms a potential “democracy capture” following the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV, Acheampong expressed deep concern over the implications of the president’s decision, urging utmost caution and adherence to due process.

“One needs to be cautious. If care is not taken, we could suffer what we call in politics and multiparty democracy as democracy capture. The democracy capture will be referred to as a situation where a party can appropriate to themselves the institutions and processes as well as the dividends of governance,” he said.

The suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo on Tuesday, April 22, follows the establishment of a prima facie case by President Mahama in response to three separate petitions calling for her removal.

The petitions, details of which have not been fully disclosed, are believed to be rooted in administrative and interpersonal disputes, including travel-related matters.

Acheampong questioned the grounds for the impeachment process, emphasising that the constitution mandates the president to act fairly in such matters. He reiterated that so far, publicly available information does not suggest a breach significant enough to warrant removal.

“So far, I have been listening to what has been known to the public. I haven’t seen any of the petitions, but it speaks to interpersonal conflict on travel issues. Under the circumstances, are we saying that these things trigger an impeachment?” he noted.

According to him, the president’s role in such proceedings should be procedural, not prejudicial. “The president is a conveyor belt; that is why I raised the argument that if we are not careful and cautious in due process, we could experience what we call the democracy capture, and it is very crucial,” he stressed.

Acheampong’s remarks come amid a growing national conversation on the implications of the Chief Justice’s suspension. While critics have condemned the move as politically motivated, others have urged institutional introspection.

Adding to the discourse, National Coordinator for the District Road Improvement Programme, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, urged the public to prioritise the broader reformation of Ghana’s judicial system rather than personalising

Offinso North MP fulfills promise to constituents

0

The Member of Parliament for Offinso North Constituency, Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah, has delivered on a key promise to his constituents with the commissioning of a new FIFA-standard Astro Turf at Akumadan, which hosted the 2025 edition of the annual Anidaso Easter gala.

The four-day football tournament, which took place from Good Friday to Easter Monday, saw enthusiastic participation from fourteen male and five female teams drawn from five zones within the constituency—Akumadan, Afrancho, Nkenkensu, Daaso-Nkwaakwaa, and Nsenu.

This year’s event marked a significant improvement over previous editions, having moved from the rough terrain of Lions Park to the newly constructed Akumadan Lions Astro Turf. The facility, equipped with floodlights, VAR technology, and other modern features, allowed matches to continue into the night and was lauded for its professional standard.

Addressing a large crowd at the opening of the gala, Dr. Asamoah said the initiative was aimed at driving development and youth empowerment through sports.

He emphasised the constituency’s potential to produce football talent and expressed optimism about the new facility’s role in nurturing athletes who can compete on both local and international stages.

“In the next five years, we must produce quality footballers who can compete well in both local and international leagues. Our new Astro Turf could also host international competitions,” the MP stated.

Akumadan Faith Young Boys and Akumadan Ladies emerged as champions in the male and female categories, respectively. The winning teams received cash prizes, trophies, and medals, with other outstanding teams and individual players also rewarded for their performance.

The 2025 Anidaso Easter Gala was widely praised for its organization, competitive spirit, and its role in uniting communities across the Offinso North Constituency.

Table of men will not campaign for ‘lazy’ gospel artistes – Kwesi Ernest

Kwesi Ernest is a popular media personality cum music executive Kwesi Ernest is a popular media personality cum music executive

Kwesi Ernest, a member of Table of Men, a Christian advocacy group committed to promoting gospel musicians in Ghana, has announced that the group will not support campaigns for gospel artistes who do not actively promote their own work.

Speaking in an interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM, the music executive stated that the group will only endorse gospel artistes for the TGMA ‘Artiste of the Year’ category if they demonstrate genuine commitment and seriousness in their craft.

Kwesi Ernest’s comments come in response to claims that the Table of Men have remained unusually silent following Joe Mettle and Team Eternity Ghana securing nominations for the Artiste of the Year category at the forthcoming Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).

Many have questioned why the group, known for its strong advocacy and instrumental role in rallying support for gospel artistes such as Diana Hamilton, who won Artiste of the Year in 2021, has not been vocal about this year’s gospel nominations.

In response, Kwesi Ernest clarified the group’s stance.

“The Table of Men cannot just jump onto the streets, radio stations and platforms and begin campaigning for someone who has received Artiste of the Year nomination simply because the person is a gospel artiste,” he stated.

According to him, a nomination alone is not enough to warrant the group’s support.

He emphasised that the group’s support is based on how proactive and engaged the nominated artistes and their teams are in driving their own campaigns.

“If the nominee in question and their management realise that there are leaders, people who are influential in the Table of Men, and decide to meet us to draw a plan to actually campaign and support our activation, why not? We are a family. We will do it,” he assured.

Kwesi Ernest further established that the group will not put in effort where there is apathy or laziness on the part of the artiste.

“But the Table of Men will not go and climb a tree when the person who has received the nomination is sleeping comfortably in his 16-inch bed. It doesn’t work like that. We cannot do that,” he added.

Buy me a house, two V8 cars, one Elantra car and send me abroad or else… – Oteele’s wife

News Hub Creator2h

Kumawood actor Oteele’s wife has sparked controversy with bold demands she made during an interview with Zionfelix, as monitored by Gh Page. In her candid conversation, she revealed that she is requesting a storey building, two Toyota V8 vehicles, an Elantra car, and travel arrangements to be sent abroad if her loyalty in the marriage is to be guaranteed.

She expressed deep frustration with her husband’s alleged behavior, claiming he is a habitual womanizer. According to her, she has caught him cheating multiple times and has made numerous attempts to correct the situation, but nothing seems to work. The emotional toll of these repeated betrayals appears to be weighing heavily on her.

Feeling pushed to her limit, she warned that without the fulfillment of her demands, she may begin to reciprocate the disloyalty by giving herself freely to other men. She admitted she fears she might end up disappointing herself if her needs are not met or if things continue the way they are.

Her statements have stirred reactions online, with many debating whether her requests are justified or extreme. Nonetheless, her remarks highlight the emotional strain and lack of trust that seem to exist in her marriage, raising broader questions about respect, boundaries, and expectations in relationships.

Make Your Reason to Abstain In Voting Against CJ Public And Resign from Council of State-Sophia Told

0

Former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has publicly lauded former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo for abstaining from the Council of State vote that approved the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Out of 31 Council of State members, 30 voted in favor of the removal, with Sophia Akuffo being the only one to abstain.

In a strongly worded post shared on Facebook, Mercer expressed his admiration for the former Chief Justice’s courage and principles. “God bless former Chief Justice Sophia Akufo for abstaining from the removal process of Justice Torkonoo; I however expect her to make the reasons public” he stated.

He described Akuffo’s action as the “right decision,” while calling the vote by the remaining members of the Council “shameful.” According to him, Sophia Akuffo fiercely opposed the decision and argued extensively with the Council of State members before ultimately choosing to abstain from the vote, a move he described as principled and admirable.

Mercer also criticized what he sees as a dangerous precedent of politicizing independent institutions. “We shouldn’t reduce our democracy to a tit-for-tat affair — that because we removed Charlotte Osei, the NDC will also remove CJ Gertrude Torkornoo,” he cautioned. He emphasized that the roles of the former Electoral Commission Chairperson and the Chief Justice are fundamentally different and must not be equated or used as political bargaining chips.

Calling on Sophia Akuffo to take a further step, Mercer said, “We are still waiting for former CJ, Sophia Akuffo, to resign from the Council of State following that shameful decision made by the other 30 members. She is principled, so we are waiting patiently.”

He lamented that the Council, rather than playing its constitutional advisory role, has unfortunately aligned with a decision that undermines the independence of the judiciary.

Patients stranded, consulting rooms empty as doctors begin strike

0

There was frustration and confusion at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) in the early hours of Thursday, April 24, 2025, as patients who had arrived early for medical attention were met with empty consulting rooms.

Doctors at TTH on April 23, suspended emergency and outpatient services indefinitely, citing “unwarranted attacks” from Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Tamale North MP Alhassan Suhuyini.

The decision was made during an emergency general assembly meeting of the Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH).

It came just hours after an earlier statement from the group condemning an incident during the minister’s visit to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit on Tuesday, April 22.

“All members of DATTH have proceeded on an indefinite suspension of all emergency and outpatient services (General OPD, Antenatal clinic, Specialist clinic, Paediatrics OPD),” the Association announced.

During a visit by Citi News, on Thursday, April 24, scenes from the hospital showed queues of patients waiting in emergency and outpatient department, with no doctors or medical personnel in sight.

Ghana set to roll out chip-enabled passports from April 28

0

Ghana is set to begin issuing chip-embedded passports from Monday, 28th April 2025, as part of major reforms in the country’s passport administration, according to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Originally launched on 2nd December 2024, the upgraded e-passports feature advanced biometric capabilities and are aimed at strengthening travel document security.

Each passport contains a microchip that securely stores the bearer’s biometric and photographic details, alongside multiple anti-fraud safeguards, both visible and concealed.

These new electronic passports will replace the existing biometric ones and are designed to align with international standards.

However, they also celebrate Ghana’s heritage by incorporating traditional Adinkra symbols, including Fawohodie (symbolising freedom and independence) and Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu (representing democracy and cooperation).

Addressing the media in Accra on Wednesday, 23rd April, Mr Ablakwa stated: “The new passports are part of our wider reform strategy to boost security, end the era of middlemen, and enhance transparency throughout the application process.”

As part of a broader 2025 reform package, the Ministry will also introduce round-the-clock passport processing, home delivery services, an electronic tracking system, and a 30% reduction in application fees.

“We are committed to providing a seamless, citizen-centred passport service that is free from third-party interference,” Mr Ablakwa affirmed.

Ghana to introduce chip-embedded passports

0

File photo of a Ghanaian passport File photo of a Ghanaian passport

Ghana is to introduce chip-embedded passports in the second quarter of 2024, and gradually phase out the current biometric passport.

The chip-embedded passports are to be linked to the national identification. The biometric information on the chip can be used to authenticate the identity of the passport holder.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, who revealed the timelines noted that the planned shift from the current biometric to chip-embedded passports is a key requirement of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the UN agency in-charge of civil aviation.

“We are at the moment using biometric but we want to upgrade to chip-embedded. Moving from the biometric to the chip-embedded is a requirement of the International Civil Aviation Organisation. It is asking all countries who are on biometric to upgrade to the chip-embedded passport,” Ampratwum-Sarpong said.

Security wise, he indicated that the chip-embedded passport will make it nearly impossible for non-Ghanaian and fraudsters to acquire the document.

“Since a passport is a serious security document that needs not be tampered with or abused, moving from biometric to chip embedded is for our security and to also make life easier and better for all of us. We are modernized, we are moving digitalization. Chip-embedded is an upgrade on digitalization so we have to get there and be one of the leading lights,” he added.

‘Only 5% of consultation rooms can diagnose patients, yet we build hospitals – CDD fellow

0

A Fellow with the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), Kwame Sarpong Asiedu, says only 5% of the country’s consultation rooms have the necessary tools to properly diagnose patients, yet government after government keeps building hospitals without addressing the real problems.

“We should stop the political dishonesty,” he said bluntly on Joy News’ on Wednesday night.

“Because whatever Richard Salomey, General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), is saying and whatever I’m saying are in documents like the one I have referred to.”

Mr. Sarpong Asiedu pointed to a powerful and damning document: the , part of a broader endorsed by Ghana’s Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service, the Global Fund, and the World Health Organisation.

“It is not me saying it,” he said. “It is in the report that was commissioned by the Government of Ghana, the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service, the Global Fund, and the WHO. So it’s an internationally accepted report done for all countries that are members of the WHO.”

That report states clearly that only 5% of Ghana’s consultation rooms are equipped well enough to make proper diagnoses.

Yet despite this, Sarpong Asiedu lamented that successive governments ignore the data and instead spend millions building hospitals that remain hollow shells of functionality.

“We jettisoned that report and went into building hospitals,” he said, shaking his head.

“That is why I say, as health professionals, this is what we should be telling the policymakers and the ultimate spenders, which in this case is the Health Minister.”

His message to fellow health professionals was a call to conscience and accountability.

“If you make these decisions which are at variance with what the health assessment reports say, then we should walk away. It’s as simple as that.”

He did not mince words about the leadership of the sector either, referencing the recent removal of the CEO of the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

“That’s why I struggle to support the sacked CEO of the Tamale Teaching Hospital,” he said.

“Because all of us—myself included, Richard [Salomey], the president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, the president of the GMA—we have all read this report.”

He questioned why leaders within the sector sat silently for years, knowing the contents of these assessments, yet continued to oversee a system that prioritised appearances over substance.

“We have our colleagues sitting and superintending when what is in the reports is not being done,” he said.

“Now you find yourself in confrontation with the Minister—I cannot support you.”

He insisted that he had already made his position known publicly.

“That’s why I spoke out when those reports came out, to say nobody should be working under those conditions.”

To Sarpong Asiedu, the disconnect between what the evidence demands and what political actors pursue is too glaring to ignore.

“How do you sit down when those reports say what they say?” he asked.

“We are building structures and calling them hospitals, but inside, they cannot treat.”

Ghana Armed Forces vows crackdown on armed elements in Bawku

0

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to restoring peace and stability in Bawku, following the resurgence of violence in the area.

During a working visit, the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, issued a strong statement condemning recent attacks, including those that have targeted security personnel deployed in the conflict zone.

Over the past few months, the conflict in Bawku has escalated and begun to spread into surrounding areas, resulting in a series of indiscriminate killings and increased insecurity. The GAF described these acts as “cowardly” and vowed to respond with full force against those responsible.

The Ghana Armed Forces will leave no stone unturned in coming after armed elements destabilizing Bawku,” Major General Gbetanu warned.

He emphasized that any attacks on civilians or security forces would be treated as acts of extremism and met with decisive military action.

The GAF announced that it is working closely with other security agencies to intensify operations in the municipality. These efforts include enforcement of the existing curfew, routine and special patrols, the protection of strategic installations, and targeted operations, which have already led to arrests and the seizure of illegal weapons and ammunition.

The underlying issues fueling the conflict in Bawku are deep-rooted and complex, but violence is not the answer,” Major General Gbetanu said. “We continue to engage key community leaders to promote dialogue, reconciliation, and mutual respect as the only sustainable path to peace.”

He further issued a stern warning to individuals inciting violence in the area, stating that their actions will not go unpunished.

We will not relent in our efforts to create an environment conducive to peace and security. Let me, however, serve a word of caution to all—especially those fomenting the trouble in Bawku—that their days are numbered,” he declared.

He concluded with a powerful message: “The future does not lie in bloodshed, but in building, learning, and growing your country. Choose unity over division, and peace over destruction.

Major General Gbetanu also commended the bravery and professionalism of the security personnel serving in Bawku under extremely challenging conditions. He assured them of continued logistical support from the Armed Forces to bolster their peacekeeping efforts.

Sarfo Gyamfi name reason why Ogum’s sacking is the right decision

0

Former Asante Kotoko winger Sarfo Gyamfi has weighed in on the dismissal of head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum, citing deep-rooted issues within the dressing room as a major reason behind the decision.

In a candid revelation, Gyamfi backed the club’s decision to part ways with Ogum, stressing that the coach had lost the dressing room and had fostered a toxic atmosphere among the players.

“With what I hear from the dressing room, there are a lot of issues between the players and the coach, like some reports suggested earlier,” Gyamfi said.

“I’m sorry to disclose this, but as a footballer, if your coach commends you in training and pushes you to work hard, even if you make mistakes, you feel encouraged. But when a coach resorts to insults—calling players ‘uncivilised’—it breaks the spirit. It was better for him to leave.”

Gyamfi, who was a key figure in Kotoko’s golden era during the late ’80s and early ’90s, did not mince words about his disapproval of Ogum’s tenure. He claimed that the coach’s man-management style damaged team morale and was counterproductive to success.

“If I had the power, I would have sacked him long ago. He signed a lot of players, but the problems still remained,” Gyamfi added.

Ogum’s second stint with Kotoko was marred by inconsistency, with the Porcupine Warriors struggling for form in the latter stages of the season.

His recruitment strategy, which saw a large influx of new players, failed to yield results, leading to growing unrest among fans and club legends alike.

Kotoko have appointed former Dreams FC manager Karim Zito as replacement for Prosper Ogum.

My landlady wants to offer me a ‘free-rent’ deal if I date her daughter

0

File photo of a worried man File photo of a worried man

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’m writing to share something deeply troubling that happened recently.

I haven’t told anyone, not even my wife, because I’m still trying to process it, and honestly, I’m afraid of the consequences.

A few nights ago, my landlady asked to have a private conversation with me. When we met, she started by complimenting me, saying I’m handsome, hardworking, and a good family man. Then she said something that left me speechless.

She asked me to do her a favour: to date her daughter. She suggested that I could even get her daughter pregnant and have a child with her.

According to her, no one would ever know about it, they would handle everything and keep it private.

She promised that in return, I wouldn’t have to pay rent for as long as I stayed in the house. And beyond that, she said there would be other “benefits” too.

She told me to take time and think about it, even urged me to really look at her daughter, saying she’s more beautiful than my wife, and that a child with her would be “nicer” than my current daughter. She asked me to get back to her with an answer.

I live in a spacious three-bedroom apartment and pay huge rent, so naturally, the offer made me think.

But at the same time, I feel disgusted and conflicted.

I’ve seen her daughter, she is physically attractive, but in my opinion, lacks direction.

She is in her 30s, doesn’t work, and spends most of her time at home on her phone, taking selfies. I don’t feel any attraction to her at all.

The worst part is not being able to tell my wife the truth. She asked what the landlady and I discussed, and I just told her it was about the rent.

I couldn’t bring myself to say what was really said, I know she’d want us to move out immediately, and I don’t want to upend our lives.

Now, I feel stuck. What if my wife somehow finds out? What if I lose my family over this? At the same time, I’m shocked at how bold my landlady was to even make such a proposition. What gave her that kind of confidence?

I don’t know how to deal with this. The offer is tempting from a financial point of view, but morally and emotionally, it’s a nightmare.

Please, what should I do?

According to the outspoken socialite, she once received screenshots upon screenshots from Samini, revealing things Stonebwoy allegedly did behind the scenes. But instead of switching sides, she said she chose to ignore it all.

“I saw all the messages. Samini sent them to me. But I still chose to stand by Stonebwoy because I believed in his talent,” Ayisha shared.

In doing so, she admits she insulted Samini publicly and ruined their long-standing friendship — all in the name of loyalty to the BHIM camp.

But that loyalty came at a cost. From online insults to personal attacks on her family, Ayisha says she took heavy hits from both Samini and Shatta Wale’s fans, yet Stonebwoy and his people stayed silent through it all.

Sam George Playfully Teases Minority MPs As They Greet Kufuor After Mahama’s SONA

A heartwarming scene unfolded in Ghana’s political circles when Hon. Sam Nartey George, the MP for Ningo-Prampram and Minister for Communications, playfully teased Minority MPs during a lively exchange following the State of the Nation Address (SONA) by President Mahama. The light moment came as former President John Agyekum Kufuor, now in a wheelchair, greeted parliamentarians.

In a widely circulated video, Kufuor is seen warmly acknowledging greetings from lawmakers, including members of the Minority caucus. Sam George, with his signature wit, commented, “Minority Nketenkete, mo sisi feaa!”—meaning “Minority, you’re looking elegant!” The former president was visibly amused, nodding and smiling in response to the jovial jab.

The moment quickly resonated with viewers across the country, showcasing a softer, more human side of Ghanaian politics. It stood in contrast to the often tense and polarized political debates that dominate headlines, offering a refreshing glimpse into the respectful relationships that can still exist among politicians from different parties.

Sam George’s playful nature lit up the occasion, adding humor to the formal event and reminding many that politics doesn’t always have to be serious. His ability to bridge tension with comedy has earned him admiration from across the aisle.

As the video spread online, many praised the camaraderie and mutual respect on display. It became a viral highlight, symbolizing the potential for unity and good spirit in Ghana’s democratic process—even amid ideological differences.

GJA Demands Police Intervention Over NPP Official’s Threat to Journalists

0

By Issah Mohammed/ Jibril Abdul Mumuni

Accra, April 23, GNA – The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has pushed the Police to take firm action against Alhaji Osman Masawudu, the third national vice chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for allegedly threatening TV3 journalists.

According to the GJA, Alhaji Masawudu publicly threatened to assault any TV3 media personnel, a subsidiary of Media General, who attended any NPP event.

The threat reportedly occurred a day after he dropped the media organisation’s microphone to the ground during a press briefing by the party on April 16, 2025.

The GJA noted that his actions were influenced by the NPP’s decision to withdraw from all Media General platforms following a disagreement.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, Mr. Albert Dwumfour, President of the GJA, stated that while the decision to withdraw was not unprecedented in Ghana’s democratic context.

However, it was concerning when such actions escalated into violence and threats to life.

“We find the actions and comments of Alhaji Masawudu very reckless, reprehensive and regrettable.

“His actions and comments are not only a threat to human life; they are also a threat to the lives of the rule of law and our democracy,” he said.

Mr. Dwumfour called on the NPP to immediately dissociate itself from the actions of its national executive.

He emphasized that the media serves the public interest and does not require an invitation to respond to matters of public concern.

“So whenever and wherever the public interest calls, the media have a constitutional invitation and obligation to respond to the call…. Thus, unless the matter or issue is private in nature,” he said.

Mr. Dwumfour urged the leadership of the NPP and Media General to resolve their differences amicably.

He called on TV3 journalists to act responsibly and avoid actions that could exacerbate the situation.

“It is important for the media to hold duty bearers to account. But it is also imperative for the media to promote peace, not conflict; unity, not division, and tolerance, not tension,” he said.

He said despite the Party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, it was important to thank God because whatever happened had good purpose for humanity.

Former Vice President Bawumia, on Wednesday, April 23, engaged party officers and staff at the NPP headquarters at Asylum Down, Accra, to thank them for smoothly running the day-to-day activities of the party.

“Unity is key in everything we do. We must build a strong party machinery that can win the next general elections. If you win the party primary and fail the general elections, it is nothing. United we stand, divided we fall, so, let us unite the rank and file of the party to take up the mantle of leadership of the country in 2028,” Dr Bawumia stated.

In that regard, Dr Bawumia had invited former presidential aspirants of the NPP to join him in the nationwide thank you tour as a sign of unity.

Dr Bawumia also debunked claims that he lost the 2024 general elections because of his religious faith as a Muslim, noting that all the research conducted to ascertain his loss ruled out religion and tribe as factors that caused his defeat.

“No religion or tribe is a factor for my defeat those saying I lost because am a Muslim is just propaganda,” Dr Bawumia emphasised.

He believed the party lost the 2024 polls because the Party supporters did not vote.

“Statistics showed that 2.1 million of our supporters did not come out to vote for us while John Mahama increased his votes by 150,000,”he explained.

“So, our defeat is internal and re-building the party we need unity to win the next general elections,” he added.

Mr Justin Koduah Frimpong, the General Secretary of NPP, on behalf of the Party executives, apologised to the rank and file of the party for its defeat in the 2024 polls.

“We’re sorry for disappointing you,” he said, and promised to implement all the recommendations in Professor Mike Oquaye’s Fact-Finding Report to ensure victory in the next general elections.

Mr Stephen Ayensu Ntim, the National Chairperson, NPP, urged the rank and file of the party to develop a “never say die” attitude and remain resolute to re-capture power in 2028.

“Let’s encourage ourselves and behave as if nothing happened and fight hard to take up the mantle of leadership of the country in 2028,” he assured the party supporters.

Transport sector not meeting economic, social goals

0

Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has stressed the need for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to address longstanding challenges in the country’s transport and logistics sector.

Speaking at the maiden Transport and Logistics Sector CEOs Breakfast Meeting, the Minister noted that issues such as infrastructure deficits, high freight and port charges, urban congestion, and road safety require joint effort and innovative solutions.

He acknowledged that the transport sector is currently grappling with several critical challenges and, as such, is not fulfilling its role as an effective economic facilitator or a reliable social service for Ghanaians.

“Transport plays a vital role in the smooth functioning of our society. When transport systems operate efficiently, they open up socioeconomic opportunities and benefits that result in positive multiplier effects such as better accessibility to markets, employment, and productivity.

“On the flip side, when transport systems struggle with capacity or reliability, they can hinder economic growth, resulting in missed opportunities and a diminished quality of life.

“We are aware that the transport sector faces a number of pressing challenges and, as such, is not operating as an effective economic facilitator or a better social service for the citizenry. Infrastructure challenges, high freight and port charges, congestion in our cities with road safety, etc. are just a few of the challenges that have plagued the sector over the years.

“Addressing these issues is a collaborative effort that requires input and partnership from all stakeholders. We, as policymakers, industry experts, and practitioners, have a choice to make regarding how to optimize the benefits and minimize the costs and inconvenience of our transportation system,” Joseph Bukari Nikpe stated.

The breakfast meeting, themed “Competitiveness of Ghana’s Logistics and Transport Sector”, convened top CEOs, industry leaders, and policymakers to strategize on how to reposition the sector as a key driver of national development.

Joseph Bukari Nikpe commended CILT for its contribution to policy advocacy and professional development, noting that the Institute has trained over 6,500 logistics and transport professionals who serve across major government institutions, including the Ministry of Transport.

He also highlighted ongoing discussions between the Ministry and CILT on initiatives such as the establishment of a National Transportation Desk, the regularization of Okada operations, support for tailored training programs, and efforts to reduce the cost of doing business at Ghana’s ports.

“We will ensure the necessary reforms are undertaken so that His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of resetting this economy can be achieved. I therefore encourage you to share your insights on best practices and emerging trends that could benefit our transport systems,” the minister added.

Meanwhile, the President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Ghana, Mark Amoamah, expressed optimism that the deliberations will lead to concrete policy actions.

“This Breakfast meeting has been conceived as a platform where sector leaders can step away from the daily operational demands and engage in open and candid discussions on critical issues shaping our industry. Exchange ideas, discuss pressing business challenges, and unlock new growth opportunities.

“We at CILT Ghana firmly believe that by fostering a spirit of collaboration and knowledge sharing amongst our CEOs, we can collectively deliberate on pertinent issues affecting the transport, shipping and logistics business and investments in Ghana. In addition, the programme is to create the platform for insightful honest discussions and strategic partnerships.

“It is our sincere hope that this Breakfast Meeting will become a regular feature on our industry calendar, a vital forum for strategic engagement and collective action,” he said.

Sam George [L] and Paul Adom Otchere [R] Sam George [L] and Paul Adom Otchere [R]

Veteran journalist and TV presenter Paul Adom-Otchere has issued a stern warning to the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, accusing him of allegedly trying to sabotage his show.

According to the host of the current affairs program Good Evening Ghana, he has observed a pattern where the multi-channel service provider DSTV, which carries his popular show, experiences disruptions whenever he is on air.

In a video shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), a visibly concerned Adom-Otchere expressed suspicion that the government, uncomfortable with the topics discussed on his program, may be deliberately attempting to frustrate the show.

“Every time we are on TV, then DSTV goes off. Every time we are on TV, then YouTube goes off. Why? What is this? Don’t they want people to hear what we are saying?” he questioned. “Let me take a short break and tell everyone that I am complaining, every time I am on TV, DSTV goes off.”

Directly addressing the minister, he added, “Samuel Nartey George, I will come after you. Don’t bring yourself. You don’t want people to hear what we are saying? Stop that. The person you were calling Nebuchadnezzar, did he turn off DSTV for people who were criticizing him? We are teaching Ghanaians history, and you’re afraid of the history, so you’re turning off the TV? What is that?”

Ghanaians In Shóck As Lawyer Of Bawumia’s Bodyguard Gives Unexpected Meaning To His Comment About VP

0

Ghanaians were taken aback when the lawyer of Mohammed Zakou, the bodyguard of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, addressed the controversy surrounding Zakou’s “rest well” comment about Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

Zakou, a known NPP activist, had been arrested after making a Facebook post that many interpreted as announcing the death of the NDC running mate. In the post, Zakou wrote, “Rest well, Her Excellency,” accompanied by crying emojis. This came shortly after news broke that Prof. Naana Jane was receiving medical attention in the United Kingdom.

The message sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many users viewing it as a premature and insensitive announcement of her death. Calls quickly mounted for Zakou’s arrest over the alleged spread of false information.

In response, Zakou’s lawyer, Enoch Afoakwa, clarified the meaning behind the post during an interview on Asempa FM. He stated that his client had no intention of suggesting that Prof. Naana Jane had died. Rather, the phrase “rest well” was meant as a heartfelt expression and a prayer for her recovery.

“Google it. Rest well doesn’t necessarily imply anything negative. He was praying for her,” Afoakwa said.

The lawyer emphasised that Zakou’s message was not malicious but rather a show of concern for her well-being while she was undergoing treatment.

The explanation has generated mixed reactions among the public. While some remain sceptical about the timing and wording of the post, others are inclined to believe it was a genuine mistake.

Elevate Your Professional Style with Skirts

0

In the ever-evolving world of professional fashion, skirts remain a timeless staple that effortlessly blends elegance, versatility, and confidence. Whether you’re navigating boardrooms, virtual meetings, or networking events, the right skirt can elevate your professional style and leave a lasting impression.

One of the greatest advantages of skirts is their adaptability. From pencil skirts that exude power and precision to A-line silhouettes that offer comfort and flair, there’s a style to suit every body type and personality. Pair a high-waisted midi skirt with a tucked-in blouse and heels for a polished, put-together look that commands attention. Prefer a more relaxed yet professional vibe? Opt for a flowy pleated skirt with a structured blazer—perfect for creative workspaces or casual Fridays.

Color and fabric choices also play a key role. Neutral tones like black, navy, and beige convey sophistication and are easy to mix and match, while bold prints or rich textures like tweed, satin, or jacquard can add a touch of individuality to your ensemble. In warmer months, breathable cotton or linen skirts keep you cool and stylish, whereas wool blends are ideal for colder seasons.

Accessories can further enhance your look. A sleek belt, elegant jewelry, or a statement bag can complete your outfit and showcase your personal style.

Ultimately, incorporating skirts into your work wardrobe isn’t just about fashion—it’s about feeling empowered and authentic in every professional setting. With the right combination, skirts can be both powerful and practical, helping you walk into any room with confidence and poise.

China sends Boeing planes back to US over tariffs

0

China has sent back planes it ordered from the US in its latest retaliation over Trump tariffs, the boss of aircraft maker Boeing has said.

Kelly Ortberg said two planes had already been returned and another would follow after trade tensions between the two countries escalated.

Boeing’s chief executive told CNBC that 50 more planes were due to go to China this year but their customers had indicated they will not take delivery of them.

The US put 145% tariffs on imports from China and it hit back with a 125% tax on US products.

Speaking in the Oval Office on Tuesday, Trump said he was optimistic about improving trade relations with China, saying the level of tariffs he had imposed would “come down substantially, but it won’t be zero”.

However, Mr Ortberg said China “have in fact stopped taking delivery of aircraft because of tariff environment”.

Boeing is America’s largest exporter with about 70% of its commercial aircraft sales outside of the US.

Mr Ortberg said Boeing was assessing options to re-market 41 of the already built planes to other customers as there was high demand from other airlines.

He said there were nine planes not yet in Boeing’s production system and he wanted to “understand their intentions and if necessary we can assign to other customers”.

He added Boeing was “not going continue to build aircraft for customers who will not take them”.

Boeing in daily talks with Trump’s team

Later in the afternoon, Mr Ortberg told an investor call “there is not a day that goes by that we’re not engaged with either cabinet secretaries or either POTUS himself (President Trump) regarding the trade war between China and the USA.”

He added he was “very hopeful we’ll get to some negotiations”.

On Wednesday, America’s Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told the International Monetary Fund (IMF) conference there was an opportunity for a “big deal” between the US and China on trade.

Asked about an upcoming meeting between the countries, Bessent said it would be an “incredible opportunity” to strike an agreement, if China was “serious” on making its economy less dependent on manufacturing exports.

Mr Ortberg also told investors others in the Boeing supply chain were now exposed to tariffs – mainly in Japan and Italy where universal tariffs of 10% are being implemented.

Brian West, Boeing’s chief financial officer said during the call “free trade policy is very important to us” and Boeing will continue to work to with suppliers to ensure continuity.

Boeing has reported smaller losses for the first quarter of the year after it manufactured and delivered more planes.

Production had slumped in 2024 due to a series of crises and a strike by about 30,000 American factory workers.

It wants to increase output of its 737 MAX jets to 38 a month in 2025.

‘All Accounts Frozen’—FIC Takes Action Against Wontumi’s Akonta Mining Over Money Laundering

0

The Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) has frozen the bank accounts of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and his mining company, Akonta Mining as reported by Ghana Web.

This move follows a directive from the FIC, which has frozen all accounts related to the embattled company and its associated entities.

According to a document obtained by GhanaWeb, the FIC acted under Section 56(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020.

The letter to relevant financial institutions specifically directs them to freeze accounts linked to Chairman Wontumi, Akonta Mining, and Hallmark Civil Engineering Limited. The freeze is in effect until further instructions are provided by the FIC.

Chairman Wontumi’s mining company has been under scrutiny following its license revocation by the Minerals Commission.

This decision, made by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, on April 21, 2025, was based on allegations that Akonta Mining was involved in criminal activities within Ghana’s forest reserves.

The Minister described the company as a “criminal syndicate,” accusing it of illegal operations.

This action by the FIC is part of their ongoing efforts to clamp down on money laundering activities under the leadership of Ing. Kwadwo Twum Boafo.

The centre previously froze the accounts of businessman Richard Nii Armah Quaye and his companies earlier this year in a similar investigation.

‘Chief Justice turned courts into auction houses’

Said Sinare is National Chairman of the Zongo Caucus Working Committee Said Sinare is National Chairman of the Zongo Caucus Working Committee

Said Sinare, National Chairman of the Zongo Caucus Working Committee of the ruling National Democratic Congress, has come out fiercely in support of the suspension of Ghana’s Chief Justice, calling the move by President John Dramani Mahama a necessary intervention to restore integrity to the country’s judiciary.

In a post on Facebook, Sinare lashed out at the suspended Chief Justice, accusing her of treating the judicial system like a “personal auction” where justice was dispensed based on who could pay the highest price.

He further criticised her for abandoning the values of fairness and impartiality that should define the judicial branch of government.

“For too long, the Chief Justice treated justice like a personal auction — where verdicts felt sold to the highest bidder, and the ordinary Ghanaian was left begging for fairness,” Sinare wrote.

He emphasised that the government’s decision to suspend the Chief Justice was not just justified, but a timely rescue mission for a judiciary that had been under threat due to her actions.

The suspension of the Chief Justice has generated significant public attention and debates.

While some have questioned the timing and rationale behind the decision, Sinare believes that it is a step in the right direction for a country that has long struggled with the erosion of public trust in its legal institutions.

“The judiciary was sinking under the weight of her bias, arrogance, and blatant disregard for the needs of the people. Ghana deserves better, and finally, justice is being served to the one who failed to deliver it,” Sinare added.

Said Sinare’s comments come on the back of a growing public outcry about the frustrations among Ghanaians who feel that the judiciary has become increasingly politicised and detached from the needs of the public.

For years, accusations of corruption and impartiality have plagued the judicial system, with many believing that powerful figures could influence legal outcomes through connections or financial means.

Supporters of the ruling government, including Sinare, see the suspension as a decisive action to restore public confidence in the country’s legal system and send a strong message that no one is above the law — regardless of their positions.
