The Managing Editor of Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has described the Minority Leader’s [Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin] use of a Shakespearean quotation during the vetting of Chief Justice nominee Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as “completely useless.”

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, Pratt said he could not understand the relevance of the quote in the context of a parliamentary proceeding meant to communicate with the public.

“I watched the vetting. I studied literature and Shakespeare. So, when the Minority Leader opened his statement with a quotation from Shakespeare, I was sitting there wondering what he was trying to say. I couldn’t make head or tail of it,” he said.

Ministerial Nominees Vetting: ‘Stop the comedy!’ – Kwesi Pratt chides Afenyo-Markin

Pratt argued that while he personally reads and appreciates Shakespeare, most Ghanaians would not have understood the quote.

“How many of us have the capacity even to understand Shakespeare? Me, I’ve read Shakespeare, and I didn’t see the relevance. Parliamentary speeches should be understandable to your constituents. Do you believe even 10% of the population understood that quotation?” he asked.

He added that the quotation may have been intended to showcase the Minority Leader’s learning, but in terms of the substance of the vetting, it did not contribute meaningfully.

Quoting the line used by the Minority Leader, “First, as I am his kinsman and his subject, strong both against the deed” from Macbeth (Act 1, Scene 7), Pratt admitted he himself could not see the connection.

“Even we have to go and read. Why do you punish us like this? We elected you to serve our interests, but now the language you speak is Greek to us,” he said, humorously stressing the need for MPs to use language accessible to the public.

Over 1 million metric tonnes of paddy rice remain unsold

0

Paddy rice stock remains unsold in the Northern Region Paddy rice stock remains unsold in the Northern Region

An estimated 1,000,000 metric tonnes of paddy rice valued at GH¢5billion remain unsold in farming communities across the country due to a severe shortage of buyers.

This has compelled major millers to suspend operations as the domestic market is being overwhelmed by the influx of cheap, substandard rice smuggled into the country.

This crisis has been further aggravated by the state procurement system’s failure to prioritise the purchase of locally produced rice, leaving over one million farmers with potentially substantial losses and threatening sustainability of the local rice industry.

In view of this, smallholder farmers and agribusiness operators called for a ban on the importation of rice, maize and soybean for six (6) months to allow clearance of existing Ghanaian-produced stocks at various warehouses which are affecting local businesses and investments.

The Association, led by Abdul-Aziz Jawharatu – a commercial farmer, presented the petition to President John Mahama through the Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf John Mburidiba at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council in Tamale.

The committee’s petition was presented to promote Ghana rice, maize and soya commodities on behalf of rice producers and millers, Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG), Ghana Rice Inter-Professional Body (GRIB), Ghana Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU), Chamber of Agribusiness Ghana, Soya Value Chain Association, National Seed Trade Association of Ghana (NASTAG), NETCAP, Rice Millers Association and other allied farmer groups and networks.

The grain economy contributes approximately 20% of national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), while in rural Ghana 9 out of every 10 families depend directly or indirectly on agriculture, they said.

“We the Ghanaian farmers, farmer cooperatives, women grain traders, aggregators, millers, Ghanaian grain value chain operators, agribusiness networks, rice, maize and soya farming communities across the country are petitioning Your Excellency to urgently come to our rescue because we are in distress,” they said.

“We are facing an escalating crisis of lacking market for our produce, namely rice, maize and soya – three major grains that form the backbone of Ghana’s food security basket – and the situation is threatening to throw millions of Ghanaian women and youth out of their jobs and collapse the Ghanaian grain value chain if Your Excellency does not rise up and address the matter with the urgency it deserves,” they noted.

In 2024, Ghana produced about 3.6 million metric tonnes of maize. But with the poultry sector’s collapse and unfair competition from cheap imports, farmers are being forced to sell at giveaway prices – or not to harvest at all, they said.

Once a symbol of growth and youth employment, soya processing and market demand are collapsing due to weak local industry support and absence of support for local markets – and the ban on export of local grains including soya has further aggravated the situation, they explained.

According to the Associations, “Harvesting season is almost ended, but the usual hordes of buyers who come to the field and purchase our produce are nowhere to be seen because they cannot find buyers for their products”.

Our livelihoods depend on sustainable agriculture and Ghana’s grain economy that feeds the teeming millions of our city-dwellers, they said.

The Northern Regional Minister received the petition and expressed gratitude to contributors in the economy, assuring of government swift intervention to address their grievances within the agricultural sector to boost food productions and security.

He noted that efforts will be made to ensure local products are patronised by government and the private sector to cushion their businesses in growing the economy.

When PhDs From The Black Market Invade The Town And The Gown

“The society that scorns excellence in plumbing because plumbing is a humble activity and tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because it is an exalted activity will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy. Neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water.”John W. Gardner

Across Ghana today, the title, “Doctor” is no longer reserved for those who have laboured through years of intellectual inquiry, rigorous research, and peer review. It is increasingly worn as an ornament of status.

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) recently drew national attention to this crisis by publishing a list of unaccredited universities and warning of the proliferation of dubious doctoral degrees.

The Rise of the Instant PhD from the Black Market

The idea that one can “earn” a PhD through a weekend seminar or a short online course is both absurd and dangerous. Yet the demand for such shortcuts is strong. Institutions both foreign and local, have capitalised on this craving for recognition by offering “executive PhDs and DBAs” and “honorary doctorates” at a price. The exchange of money for titles has become a small but thriving industry.

In 2015, I personally received an email from a so-called Commonwealth University inviting me to a two-day seminar that promised an honorary doctorate for a fee of 4,000 dollars. I declined. But many others accepted, and some even placed newspaper adverts celebrating their new titles in the Daily Graphic. What was once a symbol of scholarship has in many cases become a bought distinction.

The Regulator’s Burden

The Commission cannot escape its own share of responsibility. Some of the very institutions it has now blacklisted were previously approved by the then National Accreditation Board (now GTEC), and several Ghanaians pursued doctoral degrees there with official clearance and, in some cases, government bursaries. It is therefore understandable that many faculty members now feel betrayed.

When a regulator approves a programme and later revokes that approval, it raises questions of fairness. Those who pursued such degrees in good faith have suffered what lawyers call detrimental reliance. They trusted a public authority and made life-altering decisions on that basis.  I am sure that every court of equity would stop the GTEC from taking any action to invalidate their qualification.

Of course, there is nothing wrong when a regulator after taking a second look at an already approved matter and upon further evidence, it is found out that the approval was made in error, to remedy the situation. A practical and balanced approach would be to allow affected academics to regularise their qualifications through recognised local universities such as the University of Ghana, KNUST, UCC, or UPSA.

They could complete their PhDs by dissertation while remaining at their post. This would preserve institutional integrity while avoiding unnecessary human costs.

The Psychological Toll of a Lost Title

There is also a human side to this issue that deserves empathy. Some individuals who proudly carried the title “Doctor” for years did not obtain it through deceit but through honorary conferments that were once celebrated. To abruptly strip them of the title without any form of transitional support is harsh.

Public identity is deeply psychological. When someone has been publicly addressed as “Dr.” for a decade, a sudden order to desist can feel like a personal humiliation. Regulators and professional bodies should therefore pair enforcement with compassion. The Ghana Psychology Council and GTEC could collaborate to design a short transition and counselling programme to help affected individuals adjust, restore their confidence, and reintegrate into professional life with dignity.

The Cost to Learning and Problem-Solving

The infiltration of fake and substandard PhDs has wider implications for education and national development. A genuine doctoral programme is designed to train the mind to question, analyse, and solve problems. It demands discipline, patience, and originality. When shortcuts replace scholarship, the outcome is mediocrity dressed in academic regalia. If universities hire lecturers whose research credentials are questionable, teaching quality suffers.

Regulatory Responsibility and Public Trust

GTEC’s current measures must therefore go beyond naming and shaming. The Commission should establish a standing accreditation portal where the public can verify institutions in real time. It should also strengthen partnerships with foreign regulators to confirm transnational qualifications before they are accepted. Regular audits of dissertations and academic theses, particularly at the doctoral level, should become part of its oversight.

Moreover, GTEC must address a quiet but equally damaging malpractice within Ghana: students paying others to write their theses. This intellectual fraud undermines the purpose of higher education as much as fake degrees from abroad. Some of our local universities have also seen tertiary education as a commodity with no quality assurance system.

Reclaiming the Value of a PhD

A genuine PhD is not simply a piece of paper; it is evidence of a journey through intellectual struggle and discovery. Those who truly earn it know the sleepless nights, the failed experiments, the rewritten chapters, and the joy of finally adding something new to human knowledge. The title “Doctor” should therefore be celebrated, but it must be earned.

Society too bears responsibility. We must stop glorifying titles over competence. It is time to value intellectual humility over ceremonial prestige. If we continue to reward shortcuts, we will raise a generation more obsessed with recognition than with results.

Conclusion

Ghanaians have a strong appetite for learning and higher education. For some, it’s only about the academic titles. If we do not ensure a strong quality control system in our education, the value of education will become negligible, as it becomes available only to those who can afford to pay. We go to school to learn and to learn how to solve problems.

Now, everybody is chasing a PhD qualification simply because they have a master’s degree. This is what has taken people to countries like Cambodia, Nicaragua, Bermuda, Costa Rica, Fiji, Liberia, Andorra, Mexico, Barbados and the like for a PhD. The sad thing is that those in academia who should know the path to a credible PhD programme are now in the black market looking for PhD titles.

The Commission must ensure that our local universities do not become “diploma mill institutions” just for admitting students and printing diplomas, degrees, or PhDs for them at the end of the day.

GoldBod, National Security Arrest 25 Over Illegal Gold Trade

Richard Nunekpeku

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), in collaboration with the GoldBod Taskforce and National Security operatives, have arrested 25 individuals, including Ghanaians and foreign nationals, for allegedly engaging in illegal gold trading, smelting, and assaying.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Richard Nunekpeku, told the media yesterday in Accra that the arrests followed two separate intelligence-led operations conducted at Dome Pillar 2 and Akweteyman-Achimota in Accra.

He said the operations led to the seizure of over GH¢64,000 and USD112,500 in cash, along with several gold bars and other valuable exhibits believed to have been used in the illegal trade.

The Deputy CEO also confirmed that all the suspects have been granted police inquiry bail, with some already arraigned before the court, while others remain under investigation.

Mr. Nunekpeku expressed GoldBod’s commitment to sanitise the country’s gold sector, while cautioning individuals and entities operating without licences to desist from such unlawful activities.

He further stated that the Ghana Gold Board, in collaboration with national security agencies, will intensify surveillance and enforcement efforts to safeguard the country’s mineral resources and uphold full compliance with mining regulations.

6 people die in a stampede during military recruitment in Ghana

0

ACCRA, Ghana — Six people died in a stampede during a military recruitment event in Accra, the capital of Ghana, on Wednesday, according to the country’s military.

The military said the stampede was “triggered by an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security protocols” and arrived at the stadium where recruitment was taking place before the slated time. Many others were injured and transported to a military hospital.

Recruitments for security agencies often attract large crowds of young people seeking employment in a country grappling with high youth unemployment.

The once-promising economy of the West African nation collapsed under the strain of the COVID-19 pandemic. Inflation hit a 21-year high of more than 50% in 2022 before cooling to 8% in October 2025 after an economic reform backed by the IMF. Nearly 39% of youth are unemployed, according to government data.

‘If possible, I would bring Shatta Wale into the NPP’ – John Boadu

John Boadu (L) says Shatta Wale could help the NPP connect with the youth John Boadu (L) says Shatta Wale could help the NPP connect with the youth

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has stated that he would consider bringing dancehall artiste Shatta Wale into the NPP fold, citing the musician’s influence among young Ghanaians as a key factor in reaching voters.

Speaking on JoyNews on November 11, 2025, Boadu highlighted the importance of engaging the youth, particularly as they are projected to make up a significant portion of the electorate by 2028.

He emphasised that connecting with young people in ways that resonate with their interests is critical for the NPP’s future success.

How massive crowds stormed the Independence Square for ShattaFest

“If possible, why not? You can get other people out as well,” Boadu said when asked about Shatta Wale’s potential involvement.

Clarifying whether this meant the musician would campaign for the party, he added, “Not necessarily a hard campaign, but passing through our messages.”

The former General Secretary emphasised that the approach would not require traditional political rallies or heavy-handed campaigning. Instead, the party needs to meet young people where they are, using platforms and channels they already engage with.

“I am saying it is not even necessary to have them at your rallies. You need to meet them where they are. You need to tap into their interests and not necessarily bring them onto your political platforms,” he said.

Reflecting on the 2024 elections, Boadu noted that while the NPP had used songs by King Paluta and Shatta Wale during its campaign, it was insufficient to secure a win.

“You need to do more of that by nurturing these youthful people,” he said.

Boadu argued that youth engagement goes beyond entertainment, noting that many voters are looking for recognition and a sense of belonging within political structures, similar to what the National Democratic Congress has done within the academia space.

“Many of these people don’t need much. It’s not about an appointment. Many just need recognition. They need that sense of belonging to the party so they feel valued, even as reviewers of your programs and policies,” he said.

The former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Authority (NSA), Gifty Oware-Mensah, has been released from custody after meeting the GH¢10 million bail conditions.

Her release comes after several weeks in detention due to her reported failure to meet the bail conditions imposed on her by an Accra High Court on October 22, 2025.

Gifty Oware-Mensah pleads not guilty to GH¢38 million NSA scandal

This development was confirmed by the Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, in a Channel One TV interview on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

“Madame Gifty Oware, [it was] yesterday that she met the GH¢10 million bail conditions and she has been released,” he said.

Mohammed also disclosed that Oware-Mensah’s boss, Osei Assibey Antwi, the former Executive Director of the NSA, remains in custody following his inability to meet the GH¢800 million bail condition.

Additionally, he stated that the former Buffer Stock CEO, Abdul-Wahab Hanan, also remains in custody; however, his wife has been released after meeting her bail conditions.

Mohammed condemned what he described as the excessive bail conditions imposed on the individuals.

“Her boss is still there. GH¢800 million bail conditions. GH¢800 million, which is more than what has been used to build the Jubilee House. What kind of bail condition is that?

“Yesterday, I asked for Hanan, I was told that the case officer for Hanan was in court and I cannot see him. He is still there [in detention]. Yesterday the wife was released because she met the GH¢50 million bail conditions,” he added.

Gifty Oware-Mensah is facing charges including stealing and money laundering in the ongoing GH¢38 million “ghost names” scandal.

The charges against Oware-Mensah stem from allegations by the Attorney General’s Department, accusing her of stealing over GH¢38 million between February 2022 and March 2024 while overseeing finance, audit, and procurement at the NSA.

Prosecutors claim she diverted GH¢31.5 million from a loan facility intended to support National Service Personnel into private company accounts linked to her, using “ghost names” from the Authority’s system.

She faces counts of stealing, willfully causing financial loss to the state, abuse of public office for personal gain, and money laundering.

6 dead, 5 in ICU, 12 in critical condition – GAF

0

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed that six people have died following a stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, during an ongoing military recruitment exercise.

Earlier, conflicting reports had indicated that 12 people had died, creating confusion after the GAF initially confirmed six fatalities.

According to the military, 28 people were taken to the 37 Military Hospital for treatment. Of these, six have been confirmed dead, five are in the ICU, and 12 remain in critical condition.

The stampede occurred after thousands of young Ghanaians thronged the stadium in a desperate bid to enlist into the Ghana Armed Forces. The large crowd, coupled with intense jostling at entry points, led to chaos, resulting in multiple injuries and fatalities.

Security personnel cordoned off the area, and the military has blocked all major roads leading to El-Wak Stadium to maintain order and facilitate rescue operations.

The tragic incident happened amid an extended recruitment period announced by the Ghana Armed Forces. The exercise, originally scheduled to close on October 31, 2025, was extended by one week following technical challenges on the recruitment portal.

In a statement signed by Colonel Evelyn Ntiamoah Asamoah, Acting Director General of Public Relations, the military explained that the extension was necessary to accommodate applicants who had experienced difficulties during the initial phase.

“The Ghana Armed Forces has extended the deadline for the ongoing recruitment exercise by one week due to some technical challenges encountered on the recruitment portal during the initial period,” the statement read.

Authorities have yet to provide additional comments on the stampede, but preliminary reports suggest that poor crowd control and the overwhelming turnout contributed to the disaster.

Investigations are expected to be launched to determine the circumstances leading to the incident and prevent similar tragedies in future recruitment exercises.

GAF breaks silence on recruitment stampede

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed the deaths of six potential recruits and injuries to several others during its ongoing 2025/2026 recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

In a statement issued by the Department of Public Relations at Burma Camp, the GAF expressed deep regret over the tragic incident, which occurred on the morning of Wednesday, November 12, 2025, before the start of the scheduled screening.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the stampede was triggered by an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security barriers and rushed through the gates around 6:20 a.m.

The injured individuals are currently receiving emergency medical care at the 37 Military Hospital.

“The Ghana Armed Forces extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured,” the statement read.

The military further disclosed that arrangements are being made to formally notify the families of the deceased.

Aziz Futa Calls For Long-Term Backing For Didi Dramani

Didi Dramani

FORMER HEARTS of Oak management member Aziz Haruna Futa has called on the club’s hierarchy to commit to a long-term project under head coach Didi Dramani, urging leadership to give him at least six years to rebuild the team.

Dramani, a former Black Stars assistant coach, took over earlier this season following the exit of Aboubakar Ouattara. Since his appointment, he has led the Phobians to fifth place on the Ghana Premier League table, recording four wins, four draws, and just one defeat—against bitter rivals Asante Kotoko.

Aziz Futa, who once served as the club’s Supporters’ Chief, expressed strong confidence in Dramani’s ability to restore Hearts of Oak to their former glory.

“Didi Dramani is not a bad coach,” he said. “He needs time and a project. The club needs a project, whether six years or more, so the coach can work.”

Hearts of Oak will look to return to winning ways when they travel to the Swedru Sports Stadium to face Swedru All Blacks on November 15.

The Accra giants are pushing to reclaim the Ghana Premier League title, which they last lifted in 2021—their only league triumph since 2009.

By Daniel Agbesi Latsu, GNA

Kadjebi (O/R), Nov. 12, GNA – Mr Tassah Tapha Tassah, the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the Akan Constituency in the Election 2024, has begged party delegates to vote massively for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as the Presidential Candidate in the upcoming January 31, 2026 Presidential Primaries.

He said voting for Dr Bawumia as the party’s Presidential Candidate would strengthen its chances of winning back political power through the Election 2028.

Mr Tassah, an Accra-based private legal practitioner, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that Dr Bawumia’s proven track record, humility, and results-oriented leadership style made him the most suitable candidate to lead the party into the future.

He described Dr Bawumia as a visionary and hardworking leader who had demonstrated competence both as former Vice President and as a key figure in the NPP government, particularly in driving Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.

“Dr Bawumia has shown consistency, loyalty, and a deep understanding of the needs of Ghanaians. He is someone who connects well with the grassroots and remains committed to the ideals of the New Patriotic Party,” Mr Tassah said.

The former candidate further urged party members and supporters at all levels to rally behind the former Vice President to ensure continuity in leadership and unity within the NPP.

He emphasised that the 2026 primaries should be seen not as a contest of personalities, but as a decisive moment for the party to choose a leader capable of building on its achievements and delivering victory in 2028.

Mr Tassah, who accompanied Dr Bawumia to the Akan Constituency on Sunday, November 9, to campaign and engage delegates, also called on party members to foster a peaceful, respectful, and issue-driven internal process that would showcase the NPP’s democratic maturity and unity of purpose.

He said electing Dr Bawumia was not just about rewarding loyalty, but safeguarding the party’s future and ensuring Ghana continued a path of progress and innovation.

National Security Coordinator orders immediate dissolution of Tema Port taskforces

0

As part of an effort to strengthen port security and safeguard national revenue, the National Security Coordinator, DCOP Abdul-Osman Razak, has ordered the immediate dissolution of all special task forces and operational units operating within the Tema Port premises.

All affected personnel are mandated to return to the Secretariat in Accra for debriefing and strategic reposting.

According to the directive, the restructuring seeks to eliminate operational redundancies, dismantle parallel command structures, and establish a clear, unified chain of command across port operations.

The initiative is part of the government’s broader agenda to enhance operational discipline, ensure integrity, and improve efficiency at Ghana’s key maritime gateway.

Sources also indicated that the secretariat has implemented robust security measures to maintain the port’s operational continuity during this transition period.

A newly established Internal Affairs Unit has also been tasked with overseeing the effective implementation of these reforms, with personnel being strategically reassigned to align their competencies with the new operational framework.

“The process will be swift and strategic, ensuring that all staff are optimally positioned to contribute to a secure and professional port environment,” the sources said.

The move follows a petition from a civil society organisation, the Anti-Economic Saboteurs Bureau, which raised concerns about structural deficiencies and alleged acts of economic sabotage at the Tema Port.

The bureau specifically highlighted the existence of a sophisticated revenue and fraud syndicate, involving some personnel in key positions, that had reportedly turned the national ports into what it described as “a family NGO.”

The bureau appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to overhaul the security architecture at the port to protect both government and national economic interests.

Government officials say the reforms underscore a steadfast commitment to safeguarding critical national assets and ensuring that the Tema Port functions as a secure, reliable hub for trade and economic activity.

Samini a Ghanaian Dancehall artiste Samini a Ghanaian Dancehall artiste

Following reactions to Samini’s performance at the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards, the artiste has explained what happened during his set.

Some audience members criticised the Dancehall artiste for performing offbeat, prompting him to clarify the circumstances surrounding the performance.

In an interview on Hitz FM on November 12, 2025, Samini disclosed that he was not originally scheduled to perform at the event.

He said he had been out of town and returned just two days prior to the event, when his friend Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, the president of the GJA, asked him to step in and help out, which is how he ended up on stage.

Godwin Asediba named 2025 Journalist of the Year

“So, I originally was not billed to perform on that show. A friend is the current president of the GJA. I was out of town and got back two days prior to the event. Then he called and said, so if I have returned, I should come and help him, so it was on that tip I went there,” he explained.

During his performance, some sections of the audience felt that the sound quality was below standard. Samini attributed this to technical difficulties with the onstage monitors, which were not functioning properly.

He emphasised that such glitches are common in live performances and should be expected by those familiar with the industry.

“Two, the performance bit. I think for a live performer, every once in a while, you should expect glitches here and there because it’s a live thing. A lot of things happening at the same time. So, with this very incident, my monitors on stage were off. Yeah. So, every live performer would understand what that means,” he added.

The 29th GJA Awards took place on November 8, 2025, at the Manhyia Palace, marking the first time the event was held outside Accra.

Godwin Asediba of TV3 was crowned the 2024 Journalist of the Year. The event, held under the high patronage of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, was a grand celebration of media excellence in Ghana.

The ceremony drew several high-profile attendees, including President John Dramani Mahama, Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, and Alex Apau Dadey, Executive Chairman of the KGL Group.

0

Black Sherif

Ghanaian music sensation, Black Sherif, has clarified that he has not joined the internationally acclaimed occult group “Illuminati”, following rumours circulating on social media linking him to the secret society.

Speaking in an interview on Guide Radio’s “Up and Running” breakfast show hosted by Abena Soreno and Thomas Arthur, the BET Award winner stated that he is not a member of the illuminati group.

“I’m not illuminati. You know us as human being we be spiritual not illuminati. What you see is gangstafara (sic),” he said.

Following the release of the “Iron Boy” album cover picture and animation, Black Sherif has been the subject of discussions and online rumours regarding the “Illuminati” secret society, with some social media users speculating that he has links to the group.

The dark and mysterious aesthetic of the cover art and trailer led to speculation about the album’s themes and Black Sherif’s alleged affiliation with the secret society. His team and commentators have generally dismissed these claims as marketing strategies or internet speculation.

However, Black Sherif has addressed the rumours, clarifying that he is not part of the Illuminati. In an interview, he explained that the album’s title, “Iron Boy,” is a tribute to Ghanaian highlife pioneer Amakye Dede, who had an album with the same name.

379 foreigners arrested for passport, Ghana Card fraud

0

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has disclosed that 379 people believed to be foreigners have been arrested for illegally possessing Ghana Cards and attempting to obtain Ghanaian passports.

Sector Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa explained that the surge in such incidents follows the increased value of the Ghanaian passport, which now allows visa-free travel to 42 countries, emphasising that the ministry has introduced new security measures to curb fraudulent activities.

“Foreigners are trying to lay their hands on our passports. We need to be ahead of the threat. So we have outlined a number of enhanced security measures. I can confirm to you that we are rolling out a no-nonsense approach. Any foreigner who attempts to lay their hands on our passport will be promptly apprehended and prosecuted,” Ablakwa said.

In a move to tighten security, the ministry has also restricted mobile phone numbers used for passport applications. “No mobile phone number will be allowed to register for more than five passport applications. We detected a trend of multiple attempts by the same numbers, and these numbers have now been blocked in our system,” the Minister explained.

Ablakwa further noted that the new measures consider community demographics, the average number of minors, and parental responsibilities, aiming to prevent exploitation of the system.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Ghanaian passports and national security, warning that anyone found violating these measures would face prosecution.

National Cathedral Funding complies with Article 179 — AG responds to Supreme Court suit

0

The Attorney-General’s Department has defended the government’s actions in a case challenging the constitutionality of certain financial transactions in the financing of the National Cathedral project.

This clarification follows a 2024 suit filed at the Supreme Court by a private citizen, Jonathan Amable, who is seeking several declarations against the government over what he describes as unconstitutional financial practices.

Among other reliefs, Mr. Amable is asking the Court to declare that the financing of the National Cathedral’s construction from the Consolidated Fund—without the prior approval of the Speaker of Parliament and the Chairperson of the Council of State—contravenes Article 179(11) of the 1992 Constitution.

He is also seeking an order for the return of all monies allegedly withdrawn unconstitutionally for the project.

It will be recalled that the then minority caucus, led by Cassiel Ato Forson and Mahama Ayariga, had previously raised concerns over alleged financing of the central government budget by the Bank of Ghana without prior parliamentary approval.

Those transactions included treasury bills and the $5 billion portion of the COVID-19 relief bond now being challenged by Mr. Amable.

In addition to the National Cathedral funding, the plaintiff is challenging the constitutionality of the USD 10 billion COVID-19 Relief Bond transaction between the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana.

He argues that the transaction, which formed part of the Bank of Ghana’s asset purchase programme, violated Article 181(4) of the Constitution, which governs public borrowing.

However, in a statement of case opposing the suit, the Attorney-General, Dr Dominic Ayine, insisted that the provisions cited by the plaintiff does not offend Article 179(11) of the 1992 Constitution.

The Attorney-General maintained that all payments towards the National Cathedral were made lawfully under the Contingency Vote, categorised under “Other Government Obligations,” and not from the Contingency Fund as alleged by the plaintiff.

“The National Cathedral is 100% owned by the State,” the statement read. “Indeed, the Attorney-General issued an opinion on 6th January 2022 that the National Cathedral is a state-owned company limited by guarantee, under the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board.”

The statement further noted that details regarding the National Cathedral’s financing and policy direction had been publicly presented through annual budget statements since 2018.

In those budget statements, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, outlined the government’s commitment to providing land, a secretariat, and seed money for the project, with the expectation that the majority of the construction and maintenance funding would come from non-public sources.

The Attorney-General also recalled that the financing of the project had received policy approval from Parliament as part of the national budget after extensive debate.

On the issue of the COVID-19 Relief Bond, the Attorney-General’s Department argued that the transaction between the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana fell within the lawful scope of fiscal management measures adopted during the pandemic.

Editor’s Note: An earlier headline suggested that the National Cathedral funding was lawful. This was an inaccurate interpretation of the Attorney-General’s response. We sincerely apologize for the error and any confusion caused.

NPP General Secretary warns self-styled pundits over fake ‘Mike Ocquaye Report’

Justin Frimpong Kodua is General Secretary of NPP Justin Frimpong Kodua is General Secretary of NPP

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has issued a stern warning to self-styled radio and television pundits allegedly hiding behind certain politicians to propagate falsehoods aimed at discrediting some party members and sowing disunity.

In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, the visibly angered General Secretary cautioned that such individuals will soon face the full rigours of the law for their conduct, which he described as a deliberate attempt to “throw dust in the eyes of the public” and undermine the NPP’s internal cohesion.

Through the storm, he stood: Why the NPP needs Justin Kodua for 2028

His warning follows the circulation of a viral video by Smart Ghana Update, in which two media commentators — Albert Asomani, an accountant at Kencity Media Limited, and Anthony Dadzie Nkoom — are seen quoting from what they claim to be a “Mike Ocquaye Report.”

The alleged document purports that some former government officials misappropriated campaign funds meant for regional operations during the 2024 general elections.

In the video, Asomani claims that the supposed report indicts several high-profile government appointees, including Dr Gideon Boako, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Francis Asenso-Boakye, and Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, for failing to disburse funds allocated for campaign activities in their respective regions.

‘Ghana’s democracy being slowly poisoned by abuse of power’ – NPP claims

“According to the research, substantial financial and logistical resources were allocated to these individuals to strengthen the regional campaign structure ahead of the 2024 general elections.

However, concerns were raised that these resources were not adequately utilised for their intended purposes, thereby weakening the party base,” Asomani alleged in the video.

The commentary took a particularly personal turn when Asomani accused former transport minister, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, of being “selfish” and hoarding funds meant for the party’s regional operations.

He alleged that the former minister’s conduct contributed to the NPP’s drop in presidential votes from 52% in the 2020 elections under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to 45% in 2024 under Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

“People like Kwaku Ofori Asiamah come to the region with tainted expensive cars, flaunting the party’s money in their pockets, and expect polling station executives to use their own money to buy fuel,” Asomani claimed.

When contacted by GhanaWeb for a response, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah dismissed the allegations as baseless and malicious, describing them as part of a coordinated smear campaign.

“I am not surprised to hear such things from Net2 TV and its associates,” he stated. “But if they truly believe in the documents they are quoting and are using them to tarnish my reputation, they should be prepared to defend their claims in court.”

The NPP General Secretary, meanwhile, emphasized that the party will not tolerate attempts to weaponize misinformation for personal or factional gain.

“We are a party of laws and discipline. Anyone who seeks to destabilize our unity with fabrications or falsified documents will not go unpunished,” Kodua warned.

He urged the public to disregard unverified materials circulating online, stressing that the so-called “Mike Ocquaye Report” being referenced in the viral video does not exist within the party’s official records.

Meanwhile, GhanaWeb has learnt that all those former appointees mentioned in the videos have threatened to go to court.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Asiama, has reaffirmed the central bank’s commitment to maintaining a stable cedi amid ongoing global financial disruptions.

Delivering remarks on behalf of the Governor at the 29th National Banking and Ethics Conference organised by the Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana (CIB) on November 11, 2025, the Director of the BoG’s Banking Supervision Department, Ismail Adam, announced a strategic shift from a cautious stance to active regulation of virtual assets through the development of the Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASP) Bill.

According to Adam, the bill aims to establish a comprehensive legal framework for regulating virtual asset service providers, including cryptocurrency exchanges.

Ghana to regulate cryptocurrency by December – BoG Governor

“The VASP Bill provides the legal foundation for regulating all virtual asset service providers, safeguarding the stability of Ghana’s financial sector by mitigating risks such as digital asset-induced disruptions, regulatory arbitrage, and currency substitution,” he stated.

“It also ensures compliance with global Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) standards through rigorous due diligence and reporting mechanisms,” he added.

Adam further emphasised that the BoG has already begun registering virtual asset providers operating within the country, marking a proactive step toward formalising the sector and enhancing oversight.

He added that the new legislation will also ensure that service providers comply with global Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) standards through enhanced due diligence and robust reporting mechanisms.

Lasmid & King Promise

Following the release of “No Issues” by talented Ghanaian singer and songwriter, Lasmid and Telecel Ghana Awards Artiste of the Year, King Promise, the song has peaked at number one on Ghana’s Audiomack charts.

The song, produced by MOG Beatz, is a hymn for the unbothered. It speaks about choosing peace over drama, ease over ego.

The song blends Lasmid’s youthful energy with King Promise’s soulful tone, creating a seamless blend of rhythm and melody. “No Issues” is about keeping things simple, spreading positivity, and enjoying the moment, making it perfect for late-night drives, house parties, or unwinding after a long day.

“King Promise and I wanted to create something that feels true to our sound and easy on the soul,” Lasmid explained in an interview. “‘No Issues’ is about keeping things simple, spreading positivity, and enjoying the moment.”

Lasmid, real name Ladsmid Nathaniel Owusu, first turned heads when he won MTN Hitmaker Season 8 back in 2019.

Since then, he has carved out a lane that’s distinctly his — equal parts singer, rapper, and vibe curator. From “Ghana Jollof” to “Friday Night”, his music radiates youthful energy without losing touch with its Ghanaian roots. He’s that guy who could jump on a drill beat, a highlife groove, or a pop hook — and somehow make it all sound like home.

Some veterans on parade

The 80th Remembrance Day of the end of the First World War was commemorated in Ho, the Volta Regional capital, with a solemn service and parade to honour the gallant men and women who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.

The colourful but reflective ceremony, held at the Ho Jubilee Park, brought together officers and men of the various security agencies, traditional authorities, veterans, and members of the public.

The parade featured contingents drawn from the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire and Rescue Service, Ghana Prison Service, Ghana Immigration Service, and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority. Members of the Veterans Association of Ghana (VAG) also took part in the event.

The ceremony was marked by Christian, Muslim, and traditional prayers, the laying of wreaths, the reading of the Binyon Verse, the blowing of the siren, and the sounding of the Last Post at exactly 11:00 a.m. This was followed by a three-gun salute and a two-minute silence in honour of fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in defence of peace and freedom.

Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, laid a wreath on behalf of President John Mahama and the people of Ghana. The Flag Officer Commanding the Naval Training Command, Commodore James Adongo Agambire, also laid a wreath on behalf of the security services in the region.

Togbe Adanu Sakrafo X, Paramount Chief of the Goviefe Traditional Area, represented the chiefs and people of the Volta Region, while Ex-Warrant Officer Class One (WOI) Kofi Amegbor laid a wreath on behalf of the Veterans Association of Ghana.

The Remembrance Day, observed annually on November 11 in most Commonwealth countries, serves as a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by servicemen and women during the First and Second World Wars, as well as in other peacekeeping and military operations around the world.

The solemn occasion in Ho reinforced the enduring message of peace, unity, and gratitude towards Ghana’s heroes past.

Frank Kwabena Owusu, popularly known in the creative space as Franky5, has been enstooled as the Guantuahene of Abiriw-Akuapem in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The ceremony, held at the Abiriw Palace, attracted hundreds of well-wishers, dignitaries, family members and residents who came to witness the historic occasion.

The enstoolment was conducted under the auspices of Nana Kwame Henaku II, Omanhene of the Abiriw Traditional Area, together with the elders and kingmakers of the Abiriw Traditional Council. His installation as Nana Kwabena Owusu I, Guantuahene of Abiriw, is seen as recognition of his dedication to culture, media and youth development, and his efforts in promoting the Akuapem identity both locally and abroad.

Before his enstoolment, Franky5 had earned a reputation as a respected media personality, cultural advocate and creative entrepreneur. Through his programmes on Max TV and other media platforms, he has promoted Ghanaian music, culture and the creative arts, highlighting both emerging and established talents and shaping national conversations around culture, morality and youth empowerment.

A proud son of Abiriw, Franky5 has also supported numerous cultural initiatives in the Akuapem area, particularly in organising festivals, heritage events and youth-focused projects aimed at preserving traditional values. His commitment to uniting the people of Abiriw and his advocacy for responsible cultural representation made him an ideal choice for the role, according to Nana Kwame Henaku II and his elders.

After his installation, Nana Kwabena Owusu I expressed gratitude to the Omanhene, elders and people of Abiriw for the confidence reposed in him. He pledged to serve with humility, integrity and dedication, working with the traditional council to promote unity, development and cultural pride.

“This is not just an honour but a call to serve. I believe that the youth have a critical role to play in sustaining our traditions while embracing modernity. I will do my best to bridge that gap and bring progressive ideas that benefit Abiriw and the larger Akuapem State,” he said.

The ceremony featured rich traditional drumming, dancing and colourful displays of regal attire that reflected the splendour of Akuapem culture. Representatives from various traditional areas, the clergy, media colleagues and members of the creative arts community were present to celebrate the new chief. Max TV, where Franky5 has been a prominent presenter, provided extensive coverage, while community elders and cultural groups offered blessings and goodwill messages.

With his enstoolment, Nana Kwabena Owusu I joins the council of elders of Abiriw, where he is expected to bring his experience and youthful energy to the traditional area’s social and developmental agenda.

The occasion reaffirmed Abiriw’s commitment to nurturing leaders who combine traditional wisdom with modern innovation, qualities that define the new Guantuahene.

The coronation and swearing-in ceremony are scheduled for 22nd December 2025 as part of the activities marking the upcoming Abiriw Ohum (Eba) Festival from 21 to 28 December.

Dr. UN Invites Shatta Wale For Paid Consultation After Grammy Snub

0

Dr. UN

Kwame Owusu Fordjour, popularly known as Dr. UN, has called on Dancehall Act Shatta Wale to consult him for advice on how to attract a nomination from the Grammy Awards Recording Academy, following his snub in this year’s scheme.

Shatta Wale missed out on a Grammy nomination for the 2026 awards, despite submitting his song “Street Crown” for consideration in the Best African Performance category. He was among other Ghanaian artistes, including Moliy and Black Sherif, who also failed to secure nominations, sparking disappointment and debate among fans and industry professionals.

According to Dr. UN in a viral video, several factors contributed to Shatta Wale’s exclusion, including the artiste’s limited media support, lack of affiliation with international institutions, and insufficient understanding of the business side of the music industry.

He emphasised that Shatta Wale must meet him for a paid consultation session following his failure to secure a nomination in the recently announced Grammy Awards list.

He became widely known as “Dr. UN” after orchestrating a controversial fake awards ceremony in August 2020, where he presented awards to prominent Ghanaian personalities, including celebrities, politicians, and academics, under the false pretense of the awards being affiliated with the United Nations and the legacy of Kofi Annan.

Both the UN and the Kofi Annan Foundation later disassociated themselves from the scheme.

Martin Amidu Queries Kissi Agyebeng’s Stewardship As SP

0

Martin Amidu and Kissi Agyebeng

Former Special Prosecutor (SP), Martin Amidu, has accused the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng of dishonesty and lacking the moral integrity required to lead Ghana’s anti-corruption fight.

Mr.  Amidu, in a detailed critique of Agyebeng’s recent interview on The KSM Show, alleged that the Special Prosecutor deliberately misled the public about the handling of Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) investigation, describing his conduct as “pathologically dishonest” and unfit for the high office he occupies.

According to the former Special Prosecutor, the OSP’s ‘Half Yearly Report’, dated  December 31, 2024, uploaded on  its website on  January 12,  2025, does not indicate that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta or any individual was under suspicion for corruption-related offences.

The report, signed by Kissi Agyebeng, detailed that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) had launched a full investigation into suspected corruption and corruption-related offences in relation to the SML–GRA contractual arrangements after reviewing an audit report by KPMG dated March 27, 2024.

Mr. Amidu, however, stated that the report contained no evidence that any suspect had been invited, cautioned, or charged in the matter, nor did it suggest that the OSP had requested the assistance of any law enforcement agency to prevent suspects from leaving the country.

He pointed out that the “Half Year Report,  July 31, 2025,” stated that Ofori-Atta was first invited for questioning on January 24, 2025, weeks after he had reportedly left Ghana.

“By a letter dated January 24, 2025, Mr. Ofori-Atta was informed that the Office had commenced investigations into suspected corruption and corruption-related offences regarding cases in respect of which the Office considered him a suspect. Further, he was directed to attend, in person, the Office on February 10, 2025 for interviewing. Mr. Ofori-Atta was out of the jurisdiction at the time,” parts of the report read.

Mr. Amidu also argued that the records clearly show that the OSP could not have sought help from the past government or any security agency to prevent Ofori-Atta from leaving the country before January 24, 2025.

He cited the OSP’s own “Half Year Report,  July, 11,  2024,” which confirmed that the President had commissioned KPMG to audit the SML contracts in December 2023, and that the OSP incorporated the audit findings into its investigation without reporting any government interference.

He said that in the KSM Show interview, Agyebeng stated that Ofori-Atta left Ghana between January 1 and 6, 2025, at a time when the security setup was against the OSP, adding that the Office did not control the airport or exit points.

But Mr. Amidu, however, believes that the statements were false and inconsistent with available facts, and intended to deceive the public.

“The OSP’s own records contradict Agyebeng’s claims of non-cooperation from other security agencies. There was no record of any such request or refusal before January 24, 2025,” Mr. Amidu stressed.

The former Special Prosecutor further accused Agyebeng of incompetence and unprofessional conduct, claiming that his stewardship had undermined Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts. He cited the controversial handling of the Airbus SE investigation and the SML case as examples of what he described as Agyebeng’s “inexperience and lack of integrity.”

Mr. Amidu also alleged that both the previous Akufo-Addo administration and the current Mahama government had continued to protect the Special Prosecutor despite constitutional breaches in staff appointments at the OSP.

He linked Agyebeng’s recent media engagements, including his October 30, 2025 press conference and the subsequent KSM Show interview as part of efforts to salvage his public image amid growing calls for his dismissal.

Mr. Amidu further urged President John Mahama to order an independent forensic audit of the OSP to determine whether its operations comply with the 1992 Constitution and the OSP Act.

Such an audit, he explained, would reveal if public funds allocated to the Office have been properly utilised as well as results delivered by the OSP commensurate with its budget.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has paid glowing tribute to the late former President Jerry John Rawlings as the party marks the fifth anniversary of his passing.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, the NDC described the former president as a leader whose remarkable contributions to Ghana’s development and the welfare of its people will never be forgotten.

Late former President Rawlings honoured by United Nigerian Airlines

“Today, November 12, 2025, is exactly 5 years since the passage into glory of the founding President of the 4th Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings,” the statement noted.

The party added that although five years may seem short, the period has been filled with sorrow and reflection as members continue to honour his legacy.

Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings is dead

“As the party, the nation, and his numerous admirers worldwide remember him for his sterling contributions to the development and welfare of our people, we in the NDC remain assured that absolutely nothing will erase his legacy from the history of Ghana,” the statement emphasised.

The NDC also expressed sadness over the recent passing of the former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, acknowledging her lifelong service and dedication to the nation.

“The NDC is also painfully aware that his dearly beloved wife, Her Excellency Mrs Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, has also recently passed into glory, and is yet to receive the full honours of a befitting farewell as an indelible mark of the gratitude of the people of Ghana for her memorable contributions to the nation,” it noted.

The former president died on November 12, 2020, at the age of 73 and was accorded a state funeral in his honour.

Five years later, his wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, also passed away on October 23, 2025. The state is expected to hold a formal funeral for her on November 28, 2025.

Jerry John Rawlings first came to power in Ghana as a flight lieutenant of the Ghana Air Force following a coup d’état in 1979. Prior to that, he had led an unsuccessful coup attempt against the ruling military government on May 15, 1979, just weeks before scheduled democratic elections.

After briefly handing power over to a civilian administration, Rawlings returned to seize power again through a military coup on December 31, 1981, becoming chairman of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC).

In 1992, he resigned from the military, founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and won the presidential election that same year, becoming the first president of the Fourth Republic. He was re-elected in 1996 for a second term and, after completing his constitutionally mandated two terms, endorsed his vice president, John Atta Mills, as the NDC’s presidential candidate in 2000.

Rawlings also played a notable diplomatic role beyond Ghana’s borders, brokering a ceasefire in the First Liberian Civil War in 1995 and later serving as the African Union’s envoy to Somalia. His leadership, charisma, and enduring influence continue to shape Ghana’s political history.

BoG reports 7.42 tonne increase in gold reserves for 2025

0

Ghana’s gold reserves have seen a substantial increase, with the Bank of Ghana (BoG) successfully adding 7.42 tonnes of the precious mineral to its official holdings between January and October of 2025.

Data released by the Central Bank showed that the significant accumulation was a direct outcome of the nation’s ongoing domestic gold purchase programme, aimed at strengthening Ghana’s reserve base and enhancing its capacity to withstand global economic shocks.

The Bank of Ghana’s records show that the nation’s total gold holdings, as of January 31, 2025, stood at 30.62 tonnes.

Through a consistent monthly buying effort, the figure grew steadily throughout the period, culminating in a total reserve holding of 38.04 tonnes by October 31, 2025.

The 7.42-tonne increase over the nine-month period highlighted the strategic importance the BoG placed on diversifying its reserves away from traditional foreign currency holdings.

Majority Leader Files Contempt Complaint Against Afenyo-Markin Over ECOWAS Parliament Attendance

0

Alexander Afenyo Markin

The Majority Leader, Mr Mahama Ayariga, has formally lodged a complaint with the Speaker of Parliament against Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, accusing him of acts of contempt of Parliament and breach of parliamentary privilege. The complaint stems from Afenyo-Markin’s participation in an Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament session despite being removed from Ghana’s official delegation.

On July 22, 2025, Parliament of Ghana passed a resolution, constituting Ghana’s delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament, explicitly removing Mr Afenyo-Markin’s name from the list. The Majority Leader proposed that Afenyo-Markin be replaced with his deputy, Patricia Appiagyei, to meet the 30% female quota specified by ECOWAS. The initially advertised delegation included George Ricketts-Hagan as Leader, with members including Emmanuel Kwame Bedzrah, Laadi Ayii Ayamba, Eric Afful, Dominic Napare, Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, and Dr Bryan Acheampong, plus Millicent Yeboah Amankwah as observer.

During the ECOWAS Parliament session held in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, from September 25–28, 2025, Ghana’s delegation encountered Mr Afenyo-Markin seated among members of Ghana’s delegation, despite his removal. His action led to ECOWAS initially refusing to swear in Ghana’s delegation until the issue was resolved. Mr Ayariga recounted that he had to personally intervene and threatened Ghana’s withdrawal from ECOWAS before the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament eventually swore in four members of Ghana’s delegation.

In his submission to Speaker Alban Bagbin on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, Ayariga cited Order 30 and Order 31(O) of the Standing Orders of Parliament, which outline acts constituting contempt of Parliament. Mr Ayariga stressed that Mr Afenyo-Markin’s attendance at the ECOWAS session was in “clear defiance” of Parliament’s resolution, thereby undermining the authority of the House. He argued that by defying Parliament’s resolution and attending the Port Harcourt session, the Minority Leader affronted the dignity and authority of Parliament.

According to Mr Ayariga, contempt included obstructing or impeding Parliament in the performance of its functions, obstructing, or impeding the Speaker, a Member, or an Officer of Parliament in the discharge of their duties and affronting the dignity or authority of Parliament and bringing the name of Parliament into disrepute. The Majority Leader insisted that Afenyo-Markin’s actions fell squarely within these provisions and urged the Speaker to refer the Minority Leader to the Privileges Committee for processing.

Afenyo-Markin’s status as Third Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament remains valid and that he continues to serve as a permanent member of the body. This standing position appears to be at the heart of the dispute, with the Minority Leader potentially claiming authority to attend based on his ECOWAS Parliament office rather than national delegation membership.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has acknowledged receipt of the complaint and announced that he will make a determination on the matter on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, after reviewing all the details. The Speaker will decide whether to refer the matter to the Privileges Committee for investigation and possible sanctions should Afenyo-Markin be found culpable.

The complaint represents the latest escalation in tensions between the Majority and Minority leadership. The two leaders recently clashed during the vetting of Chief Justice nominee Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, leading Speaker Bagbin to apologize to the Judiciary and warn lawmakers about parliamentary decorum. The Majority Leader, who represents Bawku Central, has urged that appropriate sanctions be applied if the Privileges Committee finds the Minority Leader guilty of contempt.

Youth Mental Health Crisis: A Call To Action For Ghana (2)

0

How to Help Someone in Distress

Edith advised that when asked how to support someone in distress, “Empathy is key. Sometimes people just need a safe space to share their struggles without fear of judgment. If you’re unsure, connect them with a professional.”

Mr. Panti added, “Sleep patterns, withdrawal, or excessive negativity can be signs of distress. Identifying these early and offering support can make a big difference.”

Key Recommendations

Community Education and Awareness

Addressing misconceptions and raising awareness about mental health requires targeted education and outreach initiatives. Community workshops and seminars should be organized to engage diverse populations, particularly in rural and underserved areas. These initiatives must focus on dispelling harmful myths, fostering open dialogues, and equipping individuals with practical strategies to manage mental health challenges. Collaborating with trusted community figures, such as religious leaders and educators, can significantly enhance the reach and effectiveness of these efforts.

Policy Framework and Funding

A robust policy framework supported by sustainable funding is critical to addressing mental health challenges among Ghanaian youth. Increased government investment in mental health services is essential to expanding care, training professionals, and implementing innovative programs. Dedicated funding streams can also support the integration of workplace policies that promote mental well-being through flexible work arrangements and stress management initiatives. Such measures can create a supportive environment for mental health in both public and private sectors.

Improved Access to Services

Improving accessibility to mental health services is paramount to ensuring that young people receive the support they need. Expanding mental health facilities, particularly in underserved and rural areas, is vital for bridging the service gap. Training programs for mental health professionals must prioritize empathy and confidentiality to address the concerns raised during focus group discussions. Digital tools, including mobile applications and online counseling platforms, can further enhance accessibility by overcoming barriers such as stigma and geographic isolation.

Leveraging Technology

The thoughtful integration of technology into mental health initiatives offers significant potential for increasing awareness and support. Social media platforms can be leveraged to launch large-scale campaigns that normalize mental health discussions, provide educational content, and connect young people to relevant services. Mobile-friendly platforms with features such as self-assessment tools, guided meditations, crisis hotlines, and peer support groups can offer comprehensive, easily accessible mental health assistance to individuals across the country.

A Collective Responsibility

The insights gathered through this multi-pronged research approach have illuminated the critical mental health challenges faced by Ghanaian youth. By acknowledging the prevalence of stigma, the need for comprehensive education, the importance of accessible support systems, and the strategic integration of technology, this policy brief presents a roadmap for policymakers, communities, and young people to collaborate in fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment.

Through collective action, Ghana can pave the way towards a future where mental health is prioritized, and young people are empowered to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and well-being. It is time to move beyond misconceptions and embrace a holistic approach to mental health, ensuring that no young Ghanaian feels alone in their struggle.

Six dead, several injured in stampede at Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise

0

Six job seekers have died, with several others injured, following a stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra during the Ghana Armed Forces’ 2025/2026 recruitment exercise.

According to a statement from the Ghana Armed Forces, the tragedy occurred around 6:20 a.m. when an unexpected surge of applicants breached security protocols and forced their way through the gates ahead of the scheduled screening.

The injured are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital, where medical teams are working to stabilise their condition.

The Ghana Armed Forces has extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The statement, signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, acting Director General of Public Relations, assured the public that investigations are underway and further updates will be communicated in due course.

Sources within the top military ranks have disclosed to MyJoyOnline that most of the deceased were young female job seekers.

The sources further revealed that the victims sustained severe injuries, including broken necks, legs, and arms before passing on.

According to the account, military police were deployed to the venue to manage the screening exercise.

However, only one side of the double metal gate was opened, forcing the large crowd of applicants to push through a single entrance, a situation that ultimately led to the tragic stampede.

‘He found my chats and is kicking me out’

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’m writing this with so much frustration especially because I have nowhere to go. My husband is kicking me out.

I’m seven months pregnant and I already have two kids. The younger one is 3 and the older one is 5 years old. We have been married for 6 years.

My husband is kicking the kids and me out in this condition just because he went to fix my phone and saw messages between an old friend and I. The messages were old messages, but he wouldn’t understand.

I slept with the guy a few times in an uncompleted building just around where we stay. He stays far away, so I made him come around at night, and then I go and meet him inside the building.

I would have deleted those conversations I had with the guy when we were having those escapades but the phone got spoilt before I could.

It started last year but ended this year after I found out I was pregnant for my husband. My husband says he doesn’t believe the pregnancy and the children we already have are his.

This pregnancy and my children are all for my husband. He said he won’t waste his money on DNA when his wife is promiscuous so we should leave.

He has given us till tomorrow to park out. I could go to my parents or any of my siblings for now but I don’t want anyone to hear of this.

What reason will I then give them that I was coming to them with all our luggage? I have little savings but I can’t rent and this means I’ll have to take care of myself throughout till I deliver so I have to spend wisely.

I have no helper, I’m so devastated. My husband wouldn’t listen to anything I say. I’ve been pleading for him to forgive me, but he said he can’t.

I don’t want anyone who knows us get to get involved in this. But then again, who can help me solve this? I promise that I will never let this happen again.

What should I do for my husband to reconsider his decision? I need your suggestions, please.

Videos have emerged of a joint raid carried out by the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service in several communities across the country, where anti-illegal mining teams, including officials from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), were recently attacked.

The footage captures scenes of military and police personnel in action at some of the affected communities, including Hwediem in the Ahafo Region, where a NAIMOS team led by its Director of Operations was assaulted, and Dadwene in the Ashanti Region, where the Chief Executive Officer of the EPA and her team were also attacked.

At Dadwene, community members could be seen wailing as security officers arrested several residents. One woman was heard crying bitterly over the arrest of her son, whom she claimed was supposed to report to school.

“What has my son done for you to arrest him? What has he done? Leave my son to go to school. Leave my son,” she lamented.

Another video from Kenyasi showed a police officer subjecting some community members to severe lashes and forced physical activity. A man was seen being whipped while being made to do push-ups. Other residents, all men, were forced to sit on the ground, sing, and clap.

One of the officers was heard speaking in Twi, asking, “Are you going to do this again?” The seated community members responded in Twi, “We will not,” as they clapped.

Meanwhile, police have stated that all individuals arrested during the raid will be screened to identify the actual perpetrators, who will then be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Police arrest over 300 suspects in ongoing joint security operation

0

The Ghana Police Service, in a joint operation with the Ghana Armed Forces, has arrested more than 300 suspects in an ongoing joint security operation across parts of the Ahafo Region.

The coordinated exercise, which covers communities such as Hwidiem, Kenyasi, Goaso, and Mehame, is aimed at combating crime, maintaining public order, and ensuring community safety.
According to police sources, the operation has been progressing smoothly without any major incidents recorded. Earlier updates indicated that about 30 men and women were arrested at various locations, but the number has since increased to over 300 as the operation intensifies.

Police sources say further details, including profiles of the suspects and specific offences, will be communicated in due course as the operation continues.

GACL’s last-minute multi-million-cedi contract questioned

Three days before the December 2024 election, the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) awarded a revenue assurance and auditing contract to Evatex Logistics Limited, a mining and stevedoring company with no prior experience in performing this service.

This revenue assurance and auditing contract appeared to be backdated (as would be proven shortly), for evidence points to the possibility that the contract was signed after the New Patriotic Party lost the election in 2024.
