The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has provided clarity on why many New Patriotic Party (NPP) members currently holding positions in government are likely to remain at their posts despite President John Dramani Mahama’s reset agenda.
According to Ghana Web, Nketiah explained that the NDC prioritizes meritocracy and competency over partisan loyalty when it comes to state appointments.
According to him, the focus should be on selecting individuals capable of delivering results rather than replacing them based solely on political affiliation.
Speaking in an interview on Accra FM, Nketiah emphasized that the NDC has no plans to initiate a mass removal of NPP appointees. He noted that unless an individual has committed an offense, there is no need for their removal.
“The cleanup doesn’t mean removing all NPP members from office and replacing them with NDC sympathizers who cannot even do the work,” he said.
On his own experiences in the public sector, Nketiah stated that he has seen firsthand the negative impacts of politically motivated dismissals.
He pointed out that when the NPP came to power, he and many others were unfairly dismissed, which did little to help the country. “It didn’t help anybody in the country, and we have learned a lesson from that,” Nketiah remarked.
The 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Adentan, Akosua Manu, popularly known as Kozie, has criticised the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo, describing it as “petty” and a “cheap attempt at political equalization.”
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily show on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Kozie said the move by President John Dramani Mahama risks eroding public trust in Ghana’s judiciary and demonstrates a worrying trend of political interference in independent institutions.
“This is nothing more than a petty political move and a cheap attempt at creating a false sense of balance,” she said. “You don’t remove a Chief Justice, one of the last standing pillars of our democratic framework, on flimsy, undisclosed grounds and call that justice. This is political equalization at its worst.”
Her comments follow Tuesday’s announcement of the suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo by President Mahama after the establishment of a prima facie case in response to three separate petitions seeking her removal from office.
Though the specific allegations remain undisclosed to the public, the development has triggered national debate over the impartiality and motivations behind the action.
In accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, the Chief Justice was given 10 days to respond to the petitions after being served, submitting her written reply on April 7.
Following a review of her response and consultations with the Council of State, the President determined that a prima facie case had been established. Consequently, a five-member committee was constituted to investigate the matter.
The committee includes Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu Asiedu, former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo of the Ghana Armed Forces, and Associate Professor James Sefah Dzisah of the University of Ghana.
Kozie, however, insists that the process reeks of political mischief and warned that this won’t only end with the suspension of the CJ but an ultimate move to clear the board by replacing Supreme Court Judges.
She forcefully made the point that President Mahama has never appointed a Chief Justice before and sees this is an attempt to do so.
“If this was truly about accountability, government would have been transparent with the public about the nature of the petitions. Instead, we’re left with secrecy, speculation, and a rushed suspension that smacks of political convenience,” she said. “What they are trying to do is to clear the Supreme Court bench and replace them with their own people.”
Kozie also took a swipe at sections of civil society and professional bodies who she claimed had gone quiet in the face of what she called a blatant attack on judicial independence. “Where are the voices that shouted ‘rule of law’ just a few years ago? The silence from some of these groups is not only disappointing, it is dangerous. It shows a clear partisan slant in how we approach constitutional matters,” she added.
Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo has firmly responded to two separate petitions seeking her removal from office, describing the claims as baseless and lacking any constitutional merit.
The first petition, filed by a group called Shining Stars of Ghana, accused the Chief Justice of breaching Article 144 of the Constitution by recommending the appointment of five judges to the Supreme Court.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has sharply criticized the dismissal of Dr. Adam Atiku, Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), describing the move as an abuse of power and a violation of due process by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
Dr. Atiku was relieved of his duties on Tuesday, April 22, following an unannounced visit to the hospital by Minister Akandoh. The visit was in response to the death of a patient, Bavug Salim, who allegedly passed away due to the unavailability of a functional ventilator at the facility.
A video that has since gone viral captured a heated exchange between the Minister and the Head of the Accident and Emergency Department, Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, during the visit.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday, April 23, the GMA condemned both the dismissal of Dr. Atiku and the manner in which medical personnel at the Emergency Unit were treated during the visit. The association argued that the removal of the CEO bypassed standard administrative procedures and contravened the principles of natural justice.
“The GMA strongly condemns the unfortunate treatment of the doctors at the Emergency unit of the Hospital during the visit by the Minister of Health and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North and subsequent dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Hospital.
The manner in which the dismissal was carried out is an affront to due process and abuse of power by the Hon. Minister of Health. The GMA stands in solidarity with our colleagues in the wake of these injustices being perpetuated.”
The association also demanded an unqualified apology from Minister Akandoh and the Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, for what it described as an “unwarranted attack” on the hospital staff.
“The Ghana Medical Association therefore demands an unqualified apology from the Minister of Health and the Member of Parliament for Tamale North for the unwarranted attack on the staff involved,” the statement added.
Calling for fairness and accountability, the GMA urged the hospital management to follow proper investigative procedures to determine the facts surrounding the patient’s death.
“The GMA calls on the hospital to ensure due process is followed to ascertain the true facts about the grievances of the affected family and find lasting solutions to the issues.”
The controversy has triggered nationwide debate over ministerial overreach, institutional autonomy, and the fragile state of Ghana’s public healthcare infrastructure.

The NPP stalwart called on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and put an end to what he described as unjust treatment and political intimidation.
Wontumi remains firm in his resolve to contest for the national chairmanship, insisting that he will not be intimidated into abandoning his political goals.

The report indicated that the man, believed to be in his sixties, and his lover decided to enjoy fresh air in the compound of the house after the area experienced a power cut.
“According to reports, around 10:30 pm that evening, Sam and Stella decided to sleep outside in the compound to enjoy fresh air. A few minutes later, Sam returned to the bedroom to sleep, and Stella followed shortly after. Upon entering the room, Stella stepped into what she initially thought was a drop of water. The lights were off, but when she turned them on, she was met with a horrific sight. Her lover, Sam, was lying naked in a pool of blood with a bread knife beside him. His penis and testicles had been severed,” the report quoted Assembly Member for the area, Eric Acolatse, as having stated in a radio interview.
According to the assemblyman, the victim was rushed to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital for treatment.
Doctors at the hospital confirmed that his penis was completely severed, and part of his testicles was also cut off, although Sam is responding to treatment.
“After interrogation, the victim claimed to have been attacked in the bedroom by two unidentified men. According to him, the men held him down and used a knife to mutilate him. Stella was initially arrested by the police for questioning but has since been granted bail,” the assemblyman added.
Meanwhile, residents are reported to be speculating that the attack may be linked to Sam’s lover’s past relationships.
According to residents, the attackers could be a current or former lover or even a jealous ‘sponsor’ she may have ditched due to her relationship with Samuel Sam.

ChatGPT-maker OpenAI would be interested in buying Chrome
ChatGPT-maker OpenAI would be interested in buying Chrome, the world’s most popular browser, if Google was forced to sell it.
Nick Turley, an executive at the artificial intelligence (AI) company, was testifying on behalf of the US government in an ongoing monopoly trial against Google.
The US wants the tech giant to be broken up, arguing it has too much dominance in the online search market.
But Google says Chrome is not for sale and has called for the antitrust lawsuit to be thrown out.
It is estimated that around 64% of people online use Chrome, according to analytics company Similarweb.
The next most popular browser, Apple’s Safari, is used by 21% of people.
Mr Turley was testifying at the trial in Washington DC, the latest in a series of cases brought by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) against big tech dominance in social media, searching the internet and AI.
Last year, the court ruled Google had a monopoly in online search, while last week it was ruled to have an illegal monopoly in online advertising technology.
Google says it will appeal both decisions.
Its head of regulatory affairs, Lee-Anne Mulholland, said in a blog the government’s proposals “would hurt America’s consumers, economy, and technological leadership”.
Google dominance
The current trial is looking at remedies to curtail Google’s dominance in online search, as the recent explosion in generative AI services such as ChatGPT has expanded the market.
Newer AI models search the internet to improve results and reduce hallucination, which has been a problem from developers since chatbots started to become popular.
Last year, OpenAI offered to do a deal with Google which would have integrated Google search results into ChatGPT, according to Mr Turley’s testimony.
But he says their offer was rejected.
“We have no partnership with Google today,” Mr Turley said, according to Reuters.
OpenAI does however have a partnership with Microsoft, which makes the Bing search engine and Edge browser.
Meanwhile, Google has its own suite of generative AI products such as Gemini – a direct competitor to ChatGPT.
The trial is expected to last three weeks and other big tech companies – including Meta, Amazon and Apple – will be keeping a close eye on it, given they are also facing their own monopoly lawsuits from the DOJ.
Separately, reports in the past week suggest OpenAI is looking into creating its own social network.
The Verge reported the project is “still in early stages,” but the company and its boss Sam Altman have privately been asking for feedback on a potential rival to X.
OpenAI boss Sam Altman and X boss Elon Musk used to be business partners until a bitter falling-out over the direction of OpenAI a few years ago.
X has its own AI tool Grok, which it has integrated into the social platform.

Agona Swedru (C/R), April 23, GNA – Mr Eric Gyamfi Odoom, the President’s nominee for the position of Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Agona West Municipal Assembly, has been confirmed after two rounds of voting.
He polled 33 out of the 42 valid votes cast, with nine against him, during the second round.
In the earlier round, the nominee failed to secure the nod when he polled 23 votes with 19 voting against him and one rejected ballot.
The election was supervised by the Electoral Commission (EC), led by Mr Annobil Forson, the Agona West Municipal Director of EC.
Mr Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah, the Central Regional Minister, earlier called for concerted efforts to maximise revenue collection instead of relying solely on the common fund.
He admonished revenue collectors of the various Assemblies to desist from the habit of embezzling funds, warning that anyone caught would not be spared.
The Minister charged the Assembly to work tirelessly to improve its revenue targets, to help them undertake developmental projects.
Mr Eduamoah called on the traditional authorities to endeavour to release land to the Assembly for proper documentation to help undertake projects, to help ease the difficulties of securing land for government flagship projects.
He also cautioned the Assemblies to stop using internally generated funds (IGF) to organise workshops and other unwarranted issues which had become a major financial problem to these institutions.
The Minister urged the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to preserve and protect lands demarcated for cemeteries to avoid encroachments, saying that many of these reserved areas had been taken over by estate developers without reason.
He also appealed to party supporters to rally behind the MCE to enable him to pursue the reset agenda of President Mahama, so that the party could retained power in the next the elections.
Mr Odoom thanked the Assembly Members for his confirmation as MCE and pledged to work with all stakeholders to ensure rapid development of Agonaman.
He expressed gratitude to Mrs Ernestina Ofori Dangbey, the Member of Parliament for Agona West, for her unflinching support during and after his confirmation.
The MCE pledged to work with all, irrespective of party affiliation, to champion infrastructural transformation to ensure speedy development of the Agona West Municipality.
Earlier, Mr Ebenezer Bimpong, the Assemblyman for Agona Kwaman was elected unopposed as the new Presiding Member (PM) of the Assembly after pulling 42 YES and one NO votes.
The Assembly had for more than two years, not been able to elect a PM, due to internal issues.

GHANA’S BOYS’ and girls’ teams are wrapping up final preparations at the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence in Prampram ahead of the 2025 CAF African Schools Football Championship, which kicks off today at the University of Ghana Stadium.
The prestigious under-15 tournament will see Ghana face strong opposition. In the girls’ category, Ghana has been drawn in Group A against Morocco, Benin and Malawi. Group B is made up of South Africa, Uganda, Dr. Congo and The Gambia.

Lambussie, (UW/R), April 23, GNA – The Assembly Members of the Lambussie district have confirmed Mr Naawulle Ireneous Basingbie as the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area.
All the 36 assembly members, comprising 25 elected and 11 government appointees voted in favour of the nominee, indicating a 100 per cent endorsement.
The overwhelming victory signifies that Mr Basingbie has secured more than the two thirds majority required from the assembly members to get the nod stipulated in the local governance Act.
Mr Basingbie In his victory message expressed sincere gratitude to the assembly members for the confidence and hope they had in him.
The DCE said the 100 per cent endorsement would mark a new chapter in the development of Lambussie district.
He therefore called on the assembly members to work closely with him to push the development of Lambussie forward.
Mr Basingbie noted that the victory belonged to the assembly members who entrusted him with the power to lead the district towards development in areas of education, health, infrastructure, agriculture, among others.
He assured them that his doors would be open to developmental agenda that would guide the progress of the area and urged all assembly members, stakeholders, and the public to participate in decision making processes that would advance the development of the district.

A member of the delegation paying homage to the Tepa Omanhene
A delegation from the Tsukuba University, Japan, and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) School of Nursing has visited the Tepa Nursing and Midwifery Training College (TNMTC), as part of efforts to enhance an upcoming exchange program for students and tutors.
The visit aimed at assessing the institution’s infrastructure and solidifying international academic collaboration.
The delegation, led by the Principal of TNMTC, Dr. Albert Opoku, included three professors from Tsukuba University and three from KNUST School of Nursing. The team toured various facilities, including the library, computer laboratory, and lecture halls, to evaluate their suitability for hosting international students under the exchange program.
Dr. Opoku emphasised that the exchange program will provide students and faculty of Tepa Nursing College with opportunities to study and gain practical experience at Tsukuba University in Japan, while also welcoming Japanese students to Ghana for cultural and academic exchange.
“This initiative will open doors for our students and tutors to gain international exposure, learn new nursing practices, and experience diverse healthcare systems,” he stated.

Ghanaian football scout Ebenezer Sefa has voiced serious concerns about a lack of discipline within the Asante Kotoko camp, following the dismissal of head coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum.

Kumasi April 23, GNA – The Alumni of the Jacobs-Abbey Global Institute for Leadership Studies (JAGILS) has reached out to the inmates of the Cherubs Children’s Home at Santasi-Apire in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti Region.
In partnership with the Rolla Foundation, JAGILS Ghana Campus, and the Inspirers Alumni, the group deliberately visited the Children’s Home during the Easter festivity to reignite hope in the children.
The partners donated educational materials such as the Wise Ant and Golden publication textbooks for basic school level, from Nursery to Junior High School.
Also added were some assorted stationeries such as pens, pencils, notebooks, exercise books, sketch pads, graph books, erasers, rulers, mathematical sets, markers, and art supplies, among others.
Additionally, the Alumni of the JAGILS donated children’s clothes in various sizes to be shared among the inmates in the Children’s Home.
Mrs Vida Osei-Agyemang Naab, the Coordinator of the JAGILS Ghana Campus, who led the delegation, said the charitable initiative formed part of the corporate social responsibility efforts of the JAGILS.
She noted that the initiative also replicated the commitment of the JAGILS to transform learners into leaders who gave back to society and supported vulnerable communities.
Mrs Naab believed that the benevolent act by the JAGILS would instil the values of compassion, responsibility, and leadership through service in the beneficiaries.
“At JAGILS, we believe that education goes beyond the four corners of a classroom.
Supporting Cherubs Children’s Home is a practical way of showing that true leadership begins with selfless acts that uplift others,” she said.

Business strategist and financial analyst, Dr Daniel Armateye Anim
Business strategist and financial analyst, Dr Daniel Armateye Anim, has cautioned that the recent downward revision of global economic growth by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) could significantly impact emerging economies like Ghana, particularly due to their high reliance on imports and vulnerability to external shocks.
In its April 2025 World Economic Outlook (WEO) report, the IMF revised its global growth forecast from 3.3 percent to 2.8 percent, citing escalating trade tensions, particularly with the U.S. announcing a wave of new tariffs on trading partners, as well as a projected global rise in inflation.
Dr Anim believes this signals potential economic turbulence for countries with weaker economic structures.
Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb Business, Dr Anim noted that Ghana’s import-driven economy and dependence on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) make it particularly susceptible to the effects of the downgrade.
“The recent revision in global growth by the IMF, from 3.3 percent to 2.8 percent, means there’s a high likelihood of significant impact on emerging economies. Economies exposed to external shocks and heavily reliant on imports could be affected if this revised forecast holds true. Ghana is likely to feel the effects because it is largely import-driven, even in terms of attracting FDIs and demand for exports. As a result, it could affect our foreign inflows,” he said.
However, Dr Anim emphasised that the extent of the impact would largely depend on Ghana’s internal preparedness and economic resilience.
He stressed the need to strengthen the domestic economy through aggressive agricultural policies and industrial support aimed at boosting local production.
“If your macroeconomic fundamentals are strong and you have a business-friendly environment, you’re more likely to attract investment and boost your GDP growth. That could cushion the economy against global downturns. In such a case, the global slowdown may not significantly impact us,” he added.
Dr Anim also underscored the importance of maintaining a stable macroeconomic environment to encourage sustained GDP growth and increased FDI inflows.

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh is the Minister of Health
The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has faced intense public backlash online following his outbursts directed at staff of the Tamale Teaching Hospital during his unannounced visit to the facility, with critics calling for his immediate removal.
The incident occurred when the minister engaged in a heated confrontation with staff over the death of a patient at the facility’s Accident and Emergency Ward.
During his exchange with one of the doctors at the ward, the minister became displeased and expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which the official was addressing him.
Mintah Akandoh, expressing his displeasure, could be heard saying, “Even me a minister, look at the way you are behaving in front of me, so, you can imagine how you treat others.”
He further went on to condemn the official’s behavior, raising concerns about the facility’s approach to communication, particularly in how it engages with ordinary citizens who seek medical care.
“How can you behave like this? It means you are doing worse things here. I’m even worried about [sic]. There is a problem here so if a commoner comes around how can they talk to this man here. How would he be able to communicate with them? There is a problem,” Akandoh fumed.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many Ghanaians strongly condemning the minister’s behavior.
Critics argue that the minister’s approach was unwarranted, pointing out that health practitioners are often poorly equipped yet are expected to deliver quality care despite the lack of necessary tools and resources at the health facilities where they work.
Others further suggested that the minister should have focused on providing solutions to address the pressing issue of under-equipped health facilities, rather than directing his frustrations at health professionals who continue to deliver care under these challenging conditions.
They emphasised that subjecting the TTU doctor to ridicule was unfortunate and they have, therefore, called on the president to sanction him over his actions.

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has released the latest prices for its new investment initiative, the Ghana Gold Coin.
The Central Bank introduced the coin as a measure to discourage the hoarding of U.S. dollars.
As of Wednesday, April 23, 2025, the Bank reported that the 0.25 oz coin is selling at GH¢14,352.32.
The 0.50 oz coin is priced at GH¢27,816.13, while the 1.00 oz coin is now selling for GH¢54,806.36.
According to the Central Bank, the initiative aims to absorb excess liquidity in the market and strengthen the local currency against major foreign currencies.
The Ghana Gold Coin is available in three denominations: a one-ounce coin, a half-ounce coin, and a quarter-ounce coin. These are being sold through commercial banks.
“The Ghana Gold Coin is manufactured from gold mined in Ghana and refined to 99.99 percent purity. It is issued and guaranteed by the Bank of Ghana,” the Bank stated.

A 30-year-old man was lynched by an angry mob for allegedly killing his wife
Police in Rubirizi District in Western Uganda are investigating two murder cases after a 30-year-old man was lynched by an angry mob for allegedly killing his wife at Kashaka landing site, Katunguru Sub County.
“The deceased has been identified as Bernard Musinguzi, alias Master, unemployed youth and a resident of the Kashaka landing site,” said Mr Marcial Tumusiime, the greater Bushenyi police spokesperson.
Musinguzi was lynched after he allegedly stabbed his wife, Mackline Ninsiima, a fish vendor, to death following a domestic dispute that degenerated into a physical fight.
Some neighbours told police that a fight ensued between Musinguzi and Ninsiima, who would sometimes work on people’s farms as a casual labourer, after she reportedly declined to give him some money to buy alcohol, as she had been doing before.
The two had been married for seven years and had two kids together.
He was reportedly intercepted by residents and beaten to death as he attempted to flee the landing site.
“We found the body lying in an open place, a distance away from his home, with many injuries to the head. The body was conveyed to Rugazi Health Centre IV for postmortem,” said Rubirizi District CID boss, Ms Lilian Mugume.
Rubirizi Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr Bron Kikanshemeza the condemned the double murder, saying cases of domestic violence are high in the district.
“We have a task to carry. We can’t continue experiencing such as a result of indisciplined individuals who want to take the laws into their own hands,” he said.
Cases of domestic violence and mob attacks are common in Uganda, partly due to poverty, infidelity, drug abuse and loss of trust in enforcement officers, among others, according to activists.

In their annual crime report released recently, police said a total of 14,073 cases of domestic violence were reported to police in 2024 compared to 14,681 cases reported in 2023, thus giving a 4 per cent decrease in the volume of domestic violence registered countrywide.
Homicide
Further, the report says a total of 4,329 cases (representing 1.9 per cent of the total reported cases in the year) reported to the police by the end of 2024 were due to homicides, compared to 4,248 cases reported in 2023, giving a 1.9 per cent increase in Homicide cases registered countrywide.
Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has donated part of his first parliamentary salary to widows in the Tesano area of his constituency.
Dumelo revealed that the gesture formed part of his Easter outreach aimed at giving back to the vulnerable in his community.
According to him, Easter is always a good time to share with others, and supporting widows was a meaningful way to mark the occasion.
He personally prepared and distributed packages to selected widows, bringing smiles and comfort to their homes.
The widows, visibly touched by the kind gesture, expressed their appreciation and offered heartfelt blessings for him.

Eight people have died following a fatal accident involving a Sprinter van, a long bus, and a Toyota Corolla at New Ayaase in the Adansi-Fomena District on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
The crash occurred when a Sprinter bus travelling from Kumasi to Fosu attempted a dangerous overtaking of a Toyota Corolla heading towards Fomena.
In the process, the Sprinter collided head-on with an oncoming long bus from Kumasi, forcing the Corolla to veer off the road uncontrollably.
Speaking to Citi News, Isaac Adjei, the Assembly Member for Fomena East Electoral Area, stated that the impact was so severe that the Sprinter split into two, with one half somersaulting off the road.
Six victims died on the spot, while two others died at the hospital.
He stressed the need for speed ramps in the area to curb reckless driving and prevent future tragedies.

Akatsi (VR), April 23, GNA – The Church of Pentecost, Agorve District at Akatsi in the Akatsi Municipality of the Volta Region has scheduled Sunday, April 27 for its maiden ‘Motor Riders Conference.’
The conference aims to enhance road safety, minimise motorcycle-related accidents, and ensure proper regulation of commercial motorcycle transport.
Reverend Prosper Kofi Kpe li, the Agorve District Pastor of the Church, disclosed to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) ahead of the encounter that the event formed part of the Church’s core mandate of preaching the gospel to everyone and the vision 2028 agenda of possessing the nations by influencing every sphere of society with the values and principles of the kingdom of God.
He said the conference would also offer the Church the opportunity to seek God’s guidance and protection for the riders in general and contribute to society’s transformation.
“These includes equipping riders with formal skills, knowledge of road signs and traffic regulations, and practical riding tactics,” he added.
The one-day conference, to be held at the Church’s Central Chapel, would feature dignitaries such as Mr Daniel Dagba, the Akatsi South Municipal Chief Executive, Leadership of the Church under the Sogakope Area, and other facilitators including the Akatso South Police Commander.
The rest include Mr Hayford Acheampong, the Municipal Manager of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), and Divisional Officer Grade lll Mr Saviour Coffie, the Akatsi South Municipal Fire Commander.
Commercial motor riders, popularly known as ‘Okada’ and all motor riders within the Akatsi South enclave and beyond are expected to participate in the event.

Executives of energy and oil and gas sector institutions at the Accra Investor Briefing
Ghana is developing West Africa’s first integrated petroleum hub, with the aim of enhancing regional fuel security and reducing petroleum costs.
The hub is being developed in three phases between 2024 and 2036. The first phase, which broke ground in 2024, includes a 300,000-barrel-per-day (bpd) refinery, a 90,000-bpd petrochemical plant, storage tanks and marine port infrastructure.
During the Invest in African Energies: Accra Investor Briefing, Dr. Toni Aubynn, CEO of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation, shared details on the investment opportunities tied to the hub.
He remarked, “Our responsibility is to ensure that we bring the ideas of the state into reality: that is to build three refineries and five petrochemical plants. Ghana will be the first to establish a facility such as this. We are going to rely on investors to develop these important industries. Our target is local investors.”
Ghana’s sole operating refinery, the Tema Oil Refinery, already plays a key role in reducing refined petroleum imports. Although the refinery has been operational since 1963, modernisation efforts are underway to improve its units and increase productivity. Dr. Yussif Sulemana, Managing Director of Tema Oil Refinery, explained that the refinery’s success is driven by efficient work processes.
“Short-term, our strategy is to maximize existing assets. Medium- to long-term, we are looking at a partnership and strategic investment. We have a lot of investors interested and are looking for capital injection and expertise,” he said.
On the storage side, Ghana is investing in infrastructure to boost capacity and enhance its inter-depot pipeline networks. Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation (BOST), responsible for the country’s strategic fuel reserves, is working to strengthen industry infrastructure.
Technical Advisor of BOST, Nana Amoasi VII, stated, “Going forward, we plan to double our fleet of barges and introduce a pipeline from Tema to the Accra Plains Depot. We want to develop another storage facility and ensure that we use alternative fuels.”
In line with this surge in downstream investment, Ghana is also prioritising local content and human capital development to unlock greater value for the local population.
Director of Economics and Local Content at Ghana’s Petroleum Commission, Kwaku Boateng, emphasised, “We need to maximize the oil and gas industry, and to achieve the stability of the hydrocarbon industry, we need local content. At the Petroleum Commission, we have a strategy to ensure that across every petroleum activity, there is a Ghanaian possibility. Ghanaian companies are strong partners to the international oil companies.”
However, further work is needed to strengthen Ghana’s workforce capacity. David Pappoe, President of the African Energy Chamber in Ghana, pointed out that both the government and private companies have roles to play. “Ghanaian companies have to build capacity… Without human capacity, technology and knowledge, you cannot compete. We want to drive collaboration across the African continent. Through collaboration, we will be on our way to ending energy poverty.”
The Invest in African Energies: Accra Investor Briefing served as a prelude to the African Energy Week: Invest in African Energies conference, taking place from September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town. The event highlighted commercial oil and gas opportunities in Ghana, setting the stage for further discussions and deal-making in Cape Town.

The Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Council of Ministers, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has expressed confidence that the regional bloc will emerge stronger following the withdrawal of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.
That, he said, was because although it was never the intention of the bloc to witness the departure of some member states, the community must rise to the occasion and embrace the situation as a chance to rebuild and renew.
“With the unfortunate withdrawal of the three Sahelian countries, the Council is compelled to meet and make certain adjustments to suit the current reality.
As it is a question of choice and exercise of sovereignty by the military governments, we have no choice but to accept their wish,” he said.
“This is not the outcome we sought. As we look ahead, our purpose as policy makers and member states must now be to translate this moment into a positive, as an opportunity for renewal and an invitation to strengthen still,” Mr Tuggar added.
Mr Tuggar, who is the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, was speaking in Accra yesterday at the opening ceremony of the Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers held as part of the official launch of the ECOWAS at 50 Jubilee Anniversary.
The session, convened in accordance with a directive from the Authority of Heads of State and Government at its 66th Ordinary Session, is to deliberate on the separation modalities and contingency plan for the withdrawal of the three Sahelian countries from sub-regional body.
The session will also review a memorandum on the relocation of ECOWAS institutions and agencies based in the three countries.
Ministers are expected to deliberate on the implications for regional mobility and the suspension of ongoing programmes in those states.
The Chair of the Council of Ministers stated that West Africa remained the most integrated region in Africa, with streamlined protocols for economic and social development, as well as a harmonised political and security architecture, stressing that the bloc would continue to maintain its history as the best platform for solving our regional problems.
“This is not the first time our unity has been tested, nor will it be the last. Let us not be distracted by an event.
Let us focus on processes and strategies with longer-term benefits for all member states,” he added.
Mr Tuggar emphasised that the exit of the three countries should be conclusively implemented before any consideration of the nature of ECOWAS’ collective relationship with its AES counterparts, adding; “ Membership, as the saying goes, has its privileges.”
The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, underscored the significance of the meeting and explained that the contingency plan — developed entirely by ECOWAS institutions without external support — covered critical areas such as legal, institutional, financial and personnel matters, the future of regional markets and economic integration, peace and security, as well as collaboration in sectors like agriculture, health and education.
He therefore urged member states to be guided solely by the collective interest of the people of West Africa as they deliberated on the modalities of the separation and the future of regional cooperation with the three states.
He also highlighted the achievements of ECOWAS over the past four decades, particularly in promoting the free movement of people, regional trade, infrastructure and socio-economic integration.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, also described the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger as regrettable and emphasised the urgent need for a thoughtful contingency plan to manage political and economic relations with the three countries.
The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has officially begun licensing service providers in the gold trading sector, starting today, Wednesday, 23 April 2025.
In a public statement released on Wednesday, GoldBod announced that Ghanaians aged 18 and above, as well as fully-owned Ghanaian companies, are now eligible to apply for various categories of licenses.
These applications can be made online via the GoldBod website at goldbod.gov.gh or in person at the organisation’s main office in Accra.
According to the statement, “The categories of licenses that can be applied for effective immediately are as follows: Aggregator license, Self-financing Aggregator license, Buyer license (Tier 2), Buyer license (Tier 1).”
Further categories, including refining, smelting, fabrication, storage, transportation, and importation licenses, will be made available for application starting in July 2025.
The GoldBod also stressed the importance of understanding the legal requirements involved. “An applicant must carefully read, understand and accept the terms and conditions of a license before proceeding to apply for the same,” the statement advised.
The GoldBod reiterated a previous directive for all foreigners to exit the local gold trading market by 30 April 2025. “A breach of this directive shall constitute a punishable offense under the Ghana GoldBod Act, 2025 (ACT 1140),” the Board warned. However, foreigners may still apply to off-take gold directly from the GoldBod.
The regulatory body also emphasised that all gold transactions must now be conducted using the official Bank of Ghana Reference Rate, available at bog.gov.gh.
“The GoldBod reiterates its earlier directive for all gold traders to buy and/or sell gold at the official Bank of Ghana (BoG) Reference Rate,” the statement added.
As the Board looks forward to restructuring the sector, it calls on all stakeholders for their full cooperation. “The GoldBod looks forward to working with all stakeholders to restructure and streamline the gold trading sector to optimise national benefits,” the release concluded.

Ghanaian music legend, Reggie Rockstone
Ghanaian music legend Reggie Rockstone has stated that music was never intended to be his career, despite the iconic status he has attained in the industry.
Speaking in an interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM, the “Hiplife Grandpapa” said his approach to music has always been driven by passion rather than profession.
“I make music for fun. Music was never my career, that’s why I am selling waakye. I was born with music and that is my gift,” he established.
Reggie Rockstone, who is known for pioneering the hiplife genre in Ghana, explained that while he continues to make music, his focus has shifted to other ventures, including Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
“I was blessed to have been blessed, so I will always put out music. But I am doing other things, like this MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) thing,” he disclosed.
Reggie Rockstone further opened up on his martial arts background, noting that he has always had a passion for exploring new challenges.
“I am a two-time Ghana junior champion in Taekwondo. I like to do something different all the time. I am not going to face celebrities but goons,” he added.

The 2024 Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has dispelled assertions that the widely publicised nationwide NPP “Thank You Tour” is a subtle campaign for the former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Reacting to the issue on UTV on April 23, 2025, he said that the speculations are unfounded.
“Culturally, if someone honours an invitation to your party, wedding, funeral or any event and you do not go back to express your gratitude to them, they will take offense.
“Some people may even bypass you when you meet them outside and may even refuse to respond to your greeting. This is the norm in our country,” he said.
He further explained that the leadership of the party are sincerely grateful to NPP sympathisers for travelling long distances to cue and vote for the party.
“Imagine some party faithful travelling from perhaps Accra to Walewale, and other far places to cue at the polling station to cast their vote for the NPP. The party does not take it lightly; we sincerely appreciate their gesture.
“Given that Bawumia was the candidate on the ballot paper, how can we go on the ‘Thank You Tour’ without him? So, it is not like detractors are trying to suggest. The tour is meant to show appreciation and seek to unite all NPP sympathisers,” he said.
He added that it was absolutely necessary to start the rebuilding process of the party early and resolve differences among party members.
“At this stage, we want to bring all NPP sympathisers together. We are pleading to all members across the country to mobilise as we work to bounce back to power in 2028.
“If we stay in opposition for too long, all good initiatives we put in place would have been damaged by the NDC. So, it is necessary that we come together to wrestle power back from the ruling NDC,” he said in the Twi dialect.

Director-General of the National Lottery Authority, Mohammed Abdul-Salam
The Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mr. Mohammed Abdul-Salam, has cautioned the public to be wary of lotto fraudsters, particularly on social media.
He warned against falling prey to scammers who claim to possess leaked winning numbers in exchange for money—a deceitful practice that has victimized many.
Mr. Abdul-Salam made these remarks in Kwahu, Nkwatia, where the NLA held its Easter Community Draw on Saturday, April 19, 2025.
“A lot of the time, these scammers use the images of Management and Staff on social media, assuring unsuspecting people that they can make them rich in connivance with officials of the NLA. They have defrauded several people through this narrative. If anybody tells you they can make you rich, consider it like choosing to stake your car number. Nobody can manipulate the numbers or find a way to make you win. The National Lottery Authority’s games are meant for development and are purely a game of chance,” Mr. Abdul-Salam said.
The NLA organises Community Draws periodically to bring the lottery draw process closer to the public and foster community engagement.
Mr. Abdul-Salam emphasized the transparency of Community Draws.
“These events, where the NLA’s draw machines are relocated from the Authority’s Brennan Hall to a community, serve as a platform for the public to witness the draw process firsthand, dispelling any misconceptions about the NLA’s draws being manipulated,” he stated.
He also urged patrons to practice responsible gaming by avoiding overindulgence to prevent addiction and ensuring that minors are not involved in lottery games.

Three men are in police custody over the alleged murder of a primary school teacher
Three men are in police custody over the alleged murder of a primary school teacher in Itiba Village, Paloga Sub-County, Lamwo District.
The suspects, all residents of the area, are accused of fatally assaulting 38-year-old Robert Ongala, a science teacher at Mary Immaculate Nursery and Primary School, on Easter Monday.
According to police, Ongala was attacked during a quarrel that broke out at the home of one of the suspects, where community members had gathered for Easter celebrations.
“It’s alleged that on April 21, 2025, Ongala left his home and went to the home of one of the suspects. He developed a quarrel with him over unknown reasons, which escalated into a fight. The suspect was later joined by two others, who helped him assault the victim,” said Aswa East regional police spokesperson Joe Oloya.
The three allegedly boxed and kicked Ongala during the altercation, which occurred at a local bar.
“Other people intervened and managed to separate them. Ongala was escorted back to his home but was later found dead around 3pm,” Oloya told journalists on Tuesday.
The body was taken to Padibe Health Centre IV for a postmortem as investigations continue.
“Police have opened a case of murder by assault against the three suspects, who remain in custody at Lamwo Central Police Station,” Oloya added, noting that the cause of the fight remains unknown.
Anthony Akera, the chairperson of Paloga Sub-County, said the suspects and the victim were clan brothers.
“There is an ongoing mediation process to see how this can be resolved even as police investigations continue,” he told Monitor.
The killing brings to six the number of fatal assault cases reported in the Aswa East Police Region since the start of the year.
According to the Uganda Police Force’s 2024 annual crime report, at least 1,339 people were killed through assault last year. Other leading causes included murder by mob action (1,016 deaths), strangulation (491), hacking (310), and blunt force trauma (326). Domestic violence, poisoning, arson, and shootings were also recorded.
In total, 4,329 people were killed in Uganda in 2024, an average of 12 murders per day.

Akosua Manu, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Adentan, has described the current political developments under the Mahama administration as a “bloodless coup,” alleging that what is being branded as a national reset is rather a coordinated assault on Ghana’s democracy.

Speaking passionately, Akosua Manu cautioned against what she sees as a systematic breakdown of democratic order.
“The Ghanaians’ loss of confidence in the judiciary is not something that happened under the NPP administration. Look at the historical antecedents of the killing of those judges. Till that dastardly incident happened, public outrage was against the judiciary. So at no point has there been absolute confidence in our judiciary,” he said.
She argued that under successive NPP governments, efforts were made to restore institutional trust, but these gains, she claimed, are being undone.
“When the NPP comes, they come and make things better, but when the NDC comes, they try and make things worse. And we are seeing it: for some time now, lights do not stay on, prices of goods are going up, they are sacking people from their jobs.”
Manu added that the so-called reset agenda being pursued by the government is nothing short of a strategic takeover of state institutions.
“So the reset is a bloodless coup, that is what we should call it. It has nothing to do with deepening democracy or governance, because why would the national security operatives go to someone’s house without a warrant and ransack?”

Confusion erupted on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, during the confirmation of Seth Sabah Serwornoo-Banini as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Awutu Senya East in the Central Region.
What was expected to be a smooth process was marred by chaos, allegations of manipulation, and threats of legal action by some aggrieved Assembly Members.
In an earlier round of voting, the nominee secured 10 out of 19 votes, falling short of the required threshold for confirmation, prompting a second round of selection.
In the second round, he managed to obtain 14 ‘Yes’ votes, while four ballots were deemed rejected.
However, the process took a controversial turn when a suspected member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) allegedly tore and replaced ballot papers in full view of participants. Meanwhile, the media was reportedly barred from observing the proceedings.
Amidst the chaos, the judge who was supposed to swear in the MCE nominee fled the venue before the official declaration.
Speaking to Adom News, Assembly Member for the Kasoa American Town Electoral Area, Shadrach Boakyi Yiadom, alleged “mafia tactics” during the process and revealed that nine Assembly Members plan to go to court to seek redress.
Despite the chaos, Mr. Serwornoo-Banini was eventually sworn in and pledged to drive development in line with President Mahama’s vision.
Ghana’s U-15 boys’ team is facing Uganda in the opening game of the 2025 CAF Schools Championship at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

The ceremony, held on the school’s premises, was attended by school leaders, students, representatives of the Ghana Education Service, members of the community, and officials from Fidelity Bank.
Managing Director, Julian Opuni, in a speech read on his behalf by the RSSM at Fidelity Bank for Accra West, Carl Nii Ayikwei Tetteh stated, “We are not just handing over computers or equipment. We are helping to close a gap—one that limits many bright, young students from reaching their full potential simply because they lack access to basic learning tools in a digital age. Through Orange Impact, and as part of our promise to be Here for Your Journey, we are proud to walk beside our young learners, their teachers, and their communities.”
The E-Library at Tesano adds to nine schools across the country that have benefited from the Orange Impact Initiative.
Launched in 2022, the initiative was designed to mark Fidelity Bank’s 15th anniversary and supports schools through infrastructure upgrades, refurbishment projects, and the provision of teaching and learning resources. The project is funded by Fidelity Bank as well as contributions from its staff.
Group CEO of Uniwiz Foundation, Whizdom Larry, commended Fidelity Bank for its foresight and commitment to educational transformation.
“We are proud to have built this space in partnership with Fidelity. Beyond the digital tools, we also created a section dedicated to traditional reading, a quiet space filled with physical books where students can read and reflect. We believe in a balanced learning model, where technology enhances, not replaces, the power of reading,” Mr. Larry shared.
The Okaikwei North Municipal Director of Education, Cynthia Aboni, lauded the bank’s investment in public education.
“What Fidelity Bank has done today is more than an act of goodwill—it is a meaningful intervention that addresses real challenges in our schools. The E-Library will help bridge the digital divide and give our pupils an opportunity to compete on a more level playing field,” she said. “We hope other institutions will follow this example,” she said.
Assistant Girls’ Prefect of Tesano 2 Basic School, Coleman Precious Agyeiwaa, expressed her heartfelt appreciation on behalf of the student body: “We are so happy and grateful for this E-Library. Now, we can learn more, do research for our assignments, and even learn how to use a computer. Thank you, Fidelity Bank, for thinking about us and helping us dream big.”

Franklin Cudjoe, the founder and president of IMANI Africa, has expressed strong concerns over the suspension of the Chief Justice, criticizing the political nature of the Supreme Court’s recent actions and questioning the law requiring private proceedings in such matters.
In a social media post this morning, Cudjoe took aim at the Supreme Court, asserting that over the past eight years, the institution has displayed significant political bias.

The Minority Health Caucus in Parliament has condemned the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, for dismissing the Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Dr Adam Atiku, on the grounds of alleged mismanagement and medical negligence that resulted in the death of a patient at the hospital.
The NPP MPs are demanding “the immediate reversal of the decision to remove Dr Adam Atiku from office”.
They strongly maintain that the minister’s action is “unlawful, void, and of no effect”.
This was contained in a press release on Wednesday, April 23, in response to the minister’s decision.
According to the group, the minister failed to follow due process, violating key constitutional, administrative, and governance procedures.
“This attitude is not only authoritarian but diametrically opposed to the principles of administrative justice, accountability, and the rule of law,” they stated.
Citing sections 34, 37, and 42 of the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals (Amendment) Act, 2019 (Act 1009), they argued that the law does not confer unilateral power on the minister to dismiss the CEO of a teaching hospital under the present circumstances.
They further called on health associations and workers’ unions to rise and demand the reinstatement of the hospital CEO.
The minister visited the Tamale Teaching Hospital on Tuesday morning to familiarise himself with the facility and to understand an incident that transpired on Sunday.
The visit was to assess the current state of the facility and to obtain first-hand information regarding alleged medical negligence that resulted in the death of a patient who had been referred to the hospital a few weeks prior.
The deceased, Bavug Salim, was rushed to the red zone of the Emergency Ward in an unconscious state but was allegedly left unattended for several hours for unexplained reasons, resulting in his death.
During the visit, a medical officer, Dr Valentine Akwulpwa, attempted to explain the circumstances leading to the death, but the minister found the explanation unsatisfactory.
The minister also expressed dissatisfaction with the hospital’s overall condition and the management of resources, which led to the dismissal of the CEO.
Meanwhile, the minister has set up a three-member committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the patient’s death. The committee is expected to present its report within two weeks.

Ghanaian dancehall musician Stonebwoy
Lilian Antwi, a fan of Ghanaian dancehall musician Stonebwoy, has taken to social media to express gratitude after the musician replaced her stolen iPhone 12, which went missing while she was enjoying his performance in the crowd at one of his events.
During the concert, Lilian’s phone was snatched while she was recording Stonebwoy’s performance.
Stonebwoy, upon being informed of the incident, promised to replace the stolen device.
In a recent update, Lilian has confirmed in a TikTok video that she has received the replacement phone from the musician.
She expressed appreciation for his kind gesture stating; “I am the lady Stonebwoy promised to replace my phone. I am doing this video to tell everyone I have received it. He doesn’t know me in person but I am a great fan. I was in the VIP section and all of a sudden people in the regular joined us. I had to hide behind the speakers that is why the camera person couldn’t capture me.
“Right after the event, Stonebwoy told one of his security guards to give me the money for the phone. So right now I am using my new phone.”
She further called on netizens to refrain from spreading rumours that the “Jejereje” hitmaker didn’t buy her the phone.
“I am grateful to Stonebwoy for buying me the phone, It wasn’t his responsibility to buy me the phone because I haven’t seen such a situation before.
“I want to tell everyone it’s not settings as speculated on social media. Dr Louisa please thank Stonebwoy on my behalf. May God bless you,” she added.
