Schoolchildren swept away as heavy floods and snow hit South Africa

Snowfall has resulted in major disruptions on South African roads Snowfall has resulted in major disruptions on South African roads

A minibus carrying schoolchildren has been swept away by heavy flooding in South Africa, a spokesperson for the Eastern Cape provincial government has told the BBC.

Khuselwa Rantjie said it was unclear how many children were on the bus, but three had so far been found alive. Rescue efforts had been suspended as night had fallen and would resume on Wednesday, she added.

In a separate incident, the bodies of seven people carried away by flood water have been found in the province’s OR Tambo district.

South Africa has been hit by heavy snow, rains and gale force winds that have claimed the lives of a further five people in a road accident, and have left nearly 500,000 homes without electricity.

The Eastern Cape – the birthplace of anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela – has been worst-affected by the icy conditions, along with KwaZulu-Natal province.

The bad weather has forced the closure of some major roads in the two provinces to avoid further casualties.

“This is a devastating reminder of nature’s force. We urge everyone to exercise extra caution in areas prone to flooding,” Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane said in a statement.

Five people died when a minibus taxi overturned near the coastal city of East London, with the driver saying he had lost control as he was trying to avoid a fallen tree, Eastern Cape transport department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, told the BBC.

Two people were injured in the accident, he added.

State power utility Eskom said that almost 300,000 homes had been hit by electricity cuts in 14 towns and villages in Eastern Cape.

A further 196,000 homes in 24 areas in KwaZulu-Natal were also experiencing power cuts, Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena told the BBC.

KwaZulu-Natal Transport Minister Siboniso Duma said that heavy snow had led to lorries being stuck on roads, causing huge congestion.

Grader machines have been stationed on worst-affected roads to clear snow before it reached more than 30cm (12in) in depth.

Meteorologist Lehlohonolo Thobela also warned of strong winds and heavy waves at sea, making navigation for ships difficult.

Both Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal are along the coast.

South Africa regularly receives snowfall during its winter months, from June through August, with temperatures diving below 0C (32F).

There is also regular flooding and scientists say that climate change is causing heavier rainfall in the region.

Flash floods and overflowing rivers between 30 April and 2 May caused significant damage to about 4,500 homes, and left 18 people injured.

The Attorney General has broken his silence in response to accusations made by the Minority Leader, Hon. Afenyo-Markin, who claimed that National Security personnel stole expensive jewelry from the home of Mr. Addison, a former Bank of Ghana official, during a recent raid. In rebuttal, the Attorney General revealed that he has complete video documentation of the operation conducted at Mr. Addison’s residence. He issued a stern warning, indicating that if Afenyo-Markin persists with his claims, he will release the footage to the public to set the record straight.

“We have video recordings involving Dr. Addison during the raid, and if Afenyo-Markin continues to provoke me, I’ll go public with them,” the Attorney General warned.

Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has served as the Member of Parliament for Effutu in Ghana’s Central Region since 2013. Throughout his political career, he has held key roles, such as Deputy Majority Leader and membership in several parliamentary committees.

Dedicated to improving living conditions in his constituency, Afenyo-Markin has led efforts in education reform, healthcare accessibility, and local economic development. Furthermore, he launched “The Effutu Dream,” a cultural and economic program designed to boost tourism and celebrate local traditions. The match began with Senegal creating the initial threat when Nicolas Jackson tested Dean Henderson after just five minutes, but England’s goalkeeper responded with an excellent stop.

England quickly turned the tables two minutes later as Kane pounced on the rebound after Edouard Mendy could only parry Anthony Gordon’s effort.

Gordon squandered a golden opportunity to extend England’s advantage near the half-hour mark, firing wide from close quarters.

This missed chance proved costly as Sarr restored parity, slotting home into the bottom corner after latching onto Jackson’s cross, with the Chelsea forward catching Kyle Walker off guard.

Walker’s struggles continued into the second period when El Malick Diouf exploited his positioning, delivering a superb cross that Diarra headed narrowly over the crossbar.

Diarra wouldn’t be denied for long, however, finding the net on 62 minutes by converting Kalidou Koulibaly’s long pass from a difficult angle.

England’s response was swift but unsuccessful, as Mendy produced two outstanding saves to thwart both Morgan Gibbs-White and Bukayo Saka.

The hosts thought they had salvaged a point when substitute Jude Bellingham found the net with six minutes remaining, only for VAR to rule it out due to Levi Colwill’s handball earlier in the sequence.

Ghana’s education system outmoded, needs an overhaul – Miracle

0

Director of Communications for the Bawumia 2024 campaign, Dennis Miracle Aboagye, has described Ghana’s current education system as outdated and restrictive, stating that both its content and structure are long overdue for reform.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, June 11, Aboagye expressed serious concern about the continued reliance on antiquated educational models, which he argued no longer meet the needs of today’s generation.

His comments coincide with the ongoing 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), which has over 600,000 candidates participating nationwide.

“I have been an advocate against our educational system from content, curriculum, and structure. I think it is outmoded. A lot of this must change from infrastructure to the rules, to even how we study. It is stifling. The environment, I mean everything that happens around the education system, is very poor,” he said.

He questioned several long-standing practices, including the pressure placed on students through intense examination schedules. Aboagye pointed to the requirement for candidates to write multiple papers in a single day as an example of a deeply flawed system.

“Curriculum-wise, why are we writing so many subjects? How do you expect these kids to write two papers in a day?”

This year, a total of 603,328 students—297,250 males and 306,078 females—are sitting for the BECE.

Aboagye’s remarks have reignited debate over the structure and purpose of Ghana’s basic education system. He criticised the country’s resistance to educational reform, suggesting it hinders meaningful progress.

“In Ghana, I think we have a problem with change. So there are so many things that we have carried on from the past, and we do with them, meanwhile, we do not know why we do it.”

Drawing comparisons with international standards, he highlighted disparities between students studying under the Ghana Education Service (GES) curriculum and those following international frameworks like Cambridge. He argued that the key differences lie in the content and delivery, not economic status.

“When you put the Cambridge curriculum student compared to the GES curriculum student, it is not about economic class, it is about content. The level of appreciation and understanding of life is different. The Cambridge class understand and appreciates things better than the GES kids.”

MGIL expands to boost Ghana’s apparel export

0

Ghana’s ambitions to become a major player in global apparel exports are gaining momentum, with Maagrace Garments Industries Limited (MGIL) set to ramp up production following a strategic expansion backed by Growth Investment Partners Ghana Ltd (GIP).

The investment, led by GIP—a platform established by British International Investment—will fund the construction of a new production facility at MGIL’s base in Koforidua.

It aims to boost output capacity, scale exports and catalyse job creation across the country’s manufacturing sector, with a particular focus on women and youth employment.

MGIL, a subsidiary of UK-headquartered Ethical Apparel Africa (EAA), currently exports over 90 per cent of its garments to major brands in the US, UK and Europe.

With the new facility expected to go live by early 2026, the company plans to significantly increase volume while positioning Ghana as a dependable supplier in the global apparel supply chain.

The expansion is driven by rising demand from both long-standing clients and new international brands. But beyond commercial considerations, MGIL is doubling down on its social impact model.

The co-founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ethical Apparel Africa, Keren Pybus, said the growth strategy was both market-driven and socially conscious.

She added that MGIL’s emphasis on quality, innovation and inclusive workforce development “sets it apart from regional competitors and helps build resilience in a volatile global market.”

With over 700 employees (72 per cent of them women), MGIL provides structured training to all recruits.

Workers receive education on workplace standards, health and safety protocols, and sewing-machine operation, enabling new hires to join export sewing lines within four to six weeks.

The company has also established a wellness centre, subsidises meals and transportation, and promotes gender equity, with women holding half of all managerial roles.

“Our aim is to be the best place to work in the apparel industry,” Ms Pybus said, noting that employees earn, on average, four times their previous income.

“Ghana already competes well internationally. As soon as rules of origin and other trade protocols under AfCFTA are clarified, we believe Ghana will emerge as a continental export leader in apparel,” the CEO of GIP Ghana, Jacob Kholi, stated.

African giants Senegal thrashed England 3-1 in an international friendly match on June 11, 2025.

In the early minutes of the game, The Three Lions controlled the match and kept pressing their opponents which helped them create a decent chance where Antony Gordon’s shot was spilled by Mendy and Kane swiftly pounced on it to score.

Senegal organised themselves and came back into the game quickly with Ismaila Sarr placing the ball into the net for the equalizer.

The Teranga Lions continued their dominance as Habib Diarra nicely finessed the ball past the English goalkeeper to take the lead.

The English team created numerous chances in their search for the equaliser but were unsuccessful as Mendy made crucial saves to keep them alive.

Bellingham’s goal was ruled out after the VAR review showed there was a handball leading to the goal.

Cheikh Sabaly scored the last goal to cement their 3-1 commanding victory over The Three Lions.

Senegal made history as the first African team ever to have defeated England in a competitive match.

Funeral row causes chaos for mourners of Zambia’s ex-president

0

Arranging a funeral can be testing at the best of times – let alone for a former head of state. Amid that intense, initial stage of grief, loved ones must juggle cost, the wishes of the deceased and numerous other factors in order to throw a fitting send-off.

Add the clashing desires of a national government and its political opponents into the mix, and things become doubly complicated.

Edgar Lungu, who led Zambia from 2015 to 2021, died last Thursday. His death at the age of 68 has shocked Zambians – and there is genuine sense of grief with all radio stations playing gospel music for the man who had remained influential in Zambian politics despite being barred from contesting next year’s election.

Zambia is officially a Christian country – and most people take their religion and periods of mourning seriously.

But a standoff between his family, the government and Lungu’s political party, the Patriotic Front (PF), has left mourners confused about how exactly the former president should be honoured.

The government announced there would be a state funeral and declared that the official venue for mourning would be a lodge it owns in the capital, Lusaka, but the PF dismissed this plan, directing mourners to its headquarters instead.

As for Lungu’s family, they have said they are not opposed to a state funeral, but have insisted on choosing who will preside over it, family lawyer Makebi Zulu has told the BBC.

Then there is the official book of condolence, in which mourners can pay tributes to Lungu. The government has set up an official book – at the lodge – but the PF has urged people to sign theirs instead – at their headquarters.

The government wanted to repatriate his body from South Africa last week – Lungu died there after receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.

However, the PF and Lungu’s family intervened, wanting to organise the safe passage of the ex-leader themselves.

“The state was saying, ‘We are giving him full military honours, therefore we’re taking over from here’ – as if to say that ‘you have no say over what happens,'” Mr Zulu said.

Plans for returning Lungu’s remains are still unclear, though the family are now engaging with the government on this issue.

There has also been confusion over the “official” mourning period when all forms of entertainment like big football matches and concerts are stopped.

The government declared a seven-day national mourning period starting last Saturday, even though the PF announced one days earlier.

This chaos is, in short, a continuation of the tumultuous relationship between Lungu and his successor, President Hakainde Hichilema.

The pair are long-time rivals – in 2017, when Lungu was president, he had Hichilema locked up for over 100 days on treason charges after Hichilema’s motorcade allegedly refused to give way for him.

It took the intervention of the Commonwealth for Hichilema to be released. Four years later, and after five attempts at the presidency, Hichilema defeated Lungu.

Now, the PF and the Lungu family’s lawyer are accusing Hichilema’s government of being partly responsible for the former president’s death.

Lungu returned to frontline politics in 2023, frequently accusing Hichilema’s government of victimising him and other PF members.

Now, after Lungu’s death, his party allege that Lungu was banned from leaving the country for years and that if he had been allowed to travel to seek medical treatment sooner, he might still be alive.

The government has vehemently denied any responsibility for Lungu’s death, with spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa insisting that the ex-president was never prohibited from travelling.

Mr Mweetwa told the BBC that the PF was trying to use Lungu’s death as a “springboard” for a “political comeback”.

It is not the first time conflict has broken out following a Zambian leader’s death.

In 2021, the family of Kenneth Kaunda, the country’s first post-independence president, said he wanted to be laid to rest next to his wife and not at the site designated by the government.

Despite this, the government proceeded with the burial of Kaunda at Embassy Memorial Park in Lusaka.

“The High Court ruled that national interest takes precedence over individual or family preferences because there is a designated burial place for former presidents, and there is a designated set of protocol to handle those proceedings that are conducted by the state, not a political party,” Mr Mweetwa said.

This argument – about the state’s rights to a dead president’s body – has played out numerous times across Africa.

In 2019, Robert Mugabe died almost two years after being unseated as Zimbabwe’s president by his former right-hand man, Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mugabe’s family refused to allow him to be buried at the national Heroes’ Acre, arguing that he had been betrayed by his former colleagues.

After a bitter feud, the man who had led Zimbabwe to independence was laid to rest after his state funeral in his home village.

But a legal row rumbles on over his burial site, with some still wanting him to be interred at Heroes’ Acre, where a mausoleum has now been completed for him.

And loved ones rarely won such disputes. The relatives of Angola’s José Eduardo dos Santos and various Ghanaian presidents have clashed with the government over post-death arrangements, but all eventually had to yield to the state.

In Lungu’s case, the government has the constitution – the supreme law of the land – behind it, but the PF has significant clout as the former leader’s long-time political home.

In an attempt to break the standoff, the government has sent envoys to South Africa to negotiate with Lungu’s family, where a private memorial service was held at Pretoria’s Sacred Heart Cathedral on Tuesday – organised by the PF.

This was attended by his widow and daughter and where it was announced to the congregation that the former president’s body would not be flown home on Wednesday as had been expected.

So for those in Zambia, there is still no clear direction on how to send off the nation’s sixth president.

Kevin Taylor Confronts His Mother in Public—Demands Truth About His Biological Father

0

Kevin Taylor, the outspoken journalist and political commentator, has once again found himself at the center of controversy following shocking revelations about his family background. In a dramatic public exchange, Taylor reportedly confronted his mother, demanding to know the identity of his biological father. The incident, which has since gone viral, has sparked intense discussions about identity, family ties, and the broader implications of such public disclosures.

The confrontation unfolded during a live broadcast, where Taylor expressed frustration over long-standing uncertainties regarding his paternity. His emotional outburst has led to widespread speculation, with many questioning the motivations behind his decision to address the matter so publicly. Some believe that the revelation is part of a larger personal struggle, while others see it as an attempt to discredit his influence in Ghanaian political discourse.

Adding to the controversy, an individual claiming to be Taylor’s alleged father has stepped forward, making bold assertions about their relationship. The man, whose identity remains partially undisclosed, reportedly admitted that Kevin Taylor is not his biological son, contradicting long-held assumptions about their connection. This revelation has raised further questions about Taylor’s family background and the circumstances surrounding his upbringing.

Taylor, known for his fearless approach to exposing corruption and political misconduct, has yet to issue a formal response to the claims. However, sources close to him suggest that he may address the matter in an upcoming episode of his show. His supporters argue that the revelation is a distraction from his investigative work, while critics see it as an opportunity to question his credibility.

The timing of this disclosure has also fueled speculation. With ongoing legal battles and political tensions surrounding Taylor’s work, some analysts believe that the revelation could be an orchestrated attempt to undermine his reputation. Others argue that personal matters should remain separate from professional engagements, emphasizing that Taylor’s journalistic contributions should not be overshadowed by family disputes.

As the story unfolds, the Ghanaian public remains divided. Some demand further clarification from both parties involved, while others dismiss the revelation as irrelevant to Taylor’s work. Regardless of the motivations behind the statement, one thing is clear—Kevin Taylor’s influence in Ghanaian media and politics remains undeniable, and this latest controversy is unlikely to deter him from his mission.

We are cleaning up Akufo-Addo fiscal mess – Felix Kwakye

0

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu says some hardships Ghanaians are experiencing are the result of difficult but necessary choices made to avoid repeating the fiscal recklessness of the Akufo-Addo administration.

Speaking on PM Express on Tuesday, June 10, the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese MP said the current government inherited serious economic distortions that were largely driven by unbudgeted expenditures under the previous administration, many of which were politically motivated.

Right Ways to Style Your Palazzo Pants Like a Pro

0

Palazzo pants are wide-legged, flowy trousers that offer comfort and style in one piece. When styled correctly, they can elevate your outfit from simple to chic. Here’s how to style your palazzo pants like a pro:

1. Tuck in Your Tops:

To balance the volume of palazzo pants, always tuck in your top or go for a cropped style. This highlights your waist and keeps your outfit structured. Shirts, blouses, or fitted tees work well.

2. Pair with Fitted Tops:

Avoid oversized tops unless you’re going for a layered look. Fitted bodysuits, camisoles, or long-sleeve tops help define your shape and contrast the wide legs.

3. Use Belts to Define Your Waist:

Belts add shape and a stylish detail to your outfit. Opt for statement belts or slim ones, depending on the occasion.

4. Wear Heels or Wedges:

Palazzo pants can drag on the floor, especially if they’re long. Heels, wedges, or platform sandals not only add height but also keep the fabric from sweeping the ground and help elongate your frame.

5. Try High-Waisted Styles:

High-waisted palazzo pants elongate the legs and create a flattering silhouette. Pair them with cropped tops or tucked-in blouses for a sleek finish.

6. Layer with Blazers or Jackets:

For a smart, professional look, layer your palazzos with a structured blazer or short jacket. It adds sophistication, perfect for work or formal outings.

7. Experiment with Prints and Fabrics:

Play with colors, florals, or stripes. Pair bold palazzos with solid tops, or keep the pants neutral and go vibrant on top.

Accessorize minimally—let the pants stand out. A sleek hairstyle, clutch, and sunglasses can complete the pro look. With these tips, your palazzo pants can become one of the most versatile pieces in your wardrobe.

Analysts cautiously optimistic despite BoG’s GH¢9.49bn operating loss

0

Market analysts have raised concerns about the current financial position of the Bank of Ghana, following the central bank’s reported operating loss of GH¢9.49 billion for the 2024 financial year.

Despite the setback, banking consultant, Dr. Richmond Atuahene in a Citi Business News interview remain cautiously optimistic, suggesting that the Bank may return to profitability within the next two years.

He noted that while the losses are quite significant, ongoing monetary policy measures and structural adjustments could support a gradual recovery.

“The losses of the OMO I do understand. Until the Bank of Ghana is well structured they will always make loses more so because they don’t have bonds and they’ve now been told to do zero financing and so they are not going to recover next year. It will take at least two or three years before they come back to profit,” he said.

For 2024, the total operating income of GH¢9.40 billion was outpaced by total operating expenses of GH¢18.89 billion leading to the deficit.

Factors accounting for the loss this time around include GH¢8.60 billion spent to manage excess liquidity and support monetary tightening in the form of open market operations.

FX revaluation and exchange losses amounting to GH¢3.49 billion which include GH¢1.82 billion linked to the government’s Gold-for-Oil Programme.

During the period under review, currency issuance costs rose to GH¢1.01 billion, up from GH¢690 million in 2023 which means an increased cost of maintaining currency circulation.

Despite the loss, the central bank reported a GH¢4.02 billion improvement in its equity position, which closed the year at a negative GH¢61.32 billion.

‘Deaths have increased since nurses’ strike began’

0

File photo of a dead body File photo of a dead body

The General Secretary of the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana, Richard Kofi Jordan, has revealed that mortuaries across the country are now receiving an increased number of bodies due to the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, Richard Kofi Jordan said that if the strike continues, they may be forced to direct families to send bodies to police stations, as mortuary facilities may soon reach full capacity.

“There’s a surge in the number of deaths recorded in the wake of the ongoing strike, especially after the nurses embarked on a total withdrawal of their services on Monday. People are dying more across the country. Wherever there are mortuaries, we are recording high numbers of deaths. Many of the cases are coming from homes instead of hospitals. Those who are turned away from hospitals complain that as soon as they got home, their relatives died. These are the stories we are hearing, so in our minds, we believe these deaths are a result of the strike action,” he said.

Richard Kofi Jordan added that the situation has put significant pressure on mortuary facilities nationwide.

“We are enduring immense pressure following the strike. If care is not taken and the strike continues for a few more days, we will have to announce to the public that mortuaries are full. Hence, if a relative dies, the body should rather be sent to the police station. What is the mandate of the police? They are to maintain peace, law, and order. And so, if we can’t handle something and it might get out of hand, it’s better to hand it over to the police for temporary safekeeping. The effects of this strike are a serious issue. In my personal view, efforts should have been made to prevent this strike action.”

The GRNMA embarked on a nationwide strike on June 4, 2025, due to the government’s failure to implement key provisions of their 2024 Collective Agreement, which includes allowances, incentives, and improved working conditions.

Ayew Afriyie urges NPP to publish 2024 election defeat report to foster transparency

0

Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie, is calling on the leadership of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to make public the internal report on the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The report, compiled by a committee chaired by former Speaker of Parliament Prof Mike Oquaye, was tasked with assessing the party’s performance and identifying the root causes of its electoral loss. Despite its significance, the NPP’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, has said the report will remain confidential and be used strictly for internal reflection.

However, speaking on Channel One TV on Tuesday, 10 June, Dr Ayew Afriyie said he strongly disagrees with that position.

“The national leadership is saying they don’t want people to know what went wrong so they can correct it quietly without public ridicule. I disagree with that stance,” he said. “I believe the report should be released. Heal the people. You have lost an election—be teased, let them use it against you. Ghanaians understand that; they will heal from that.”

Dr Afriyie stressed that transparency would help the party rebuild trust and refocus its strategy ahead of future elections. “Get into why you lost, and in two to three years, people will focus on what you’re doing better, regardless of any mockery from your opponents,” he added.

He also cited internal voter apathy as a contributing factor to the NPP’s defeat: “Another research shows that about 20% to 25% of your people voted for the NDC, and some didn’t vote at all.”

The NPP suffered a significant setback in the 2024 elections, losing the presidency to former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), alongside a sharp decline in parliamentary seats.

The Oquaye Committee’s findings were presented at an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Wednesday, 16 April, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

Following the meeting, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong acknowledged receipt of the report and indicated that its findings and recommendations would be shared in due course. However, no official version of the report has yet been released.

Political analysts argue that meaningful reform and political renewal must begin with openness and a willingness to confront uncomfortable truths.

Gold buyers secure EPA fee waivers to ease licencing burden

The Chamber of Licenced Gold Buyers (CLGB) has secured a waiver of Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) fees for Tier 1 gold buying licences and is negotiating a fee reduction for Tier 2 licences.

This development is in line with efforts aimed at lowering operational costs and encouraging formalisation in the sector.

The initiative, reached through a partnership with the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD), is expected to make licencing more accessible for small- and medium-sized gold trading businesses, particularly in the downstream market.

“We propose working together to achieve the Board’s objectives while also creating economic value for our members,” said the Chamber’s Chief Executive Officer, Kwaku Amoah.

“This is a win for our industry, especially for those operating in rural mining communities.”

The Chamber, which has a footprint across the Ashanti, Western, Central and Northern Regions, said the waiver and possible reduction in EPA fees are part of broader efforts to streamline licencing and ensure environmental compliance without stifling business growth.

Under the new arrangement, Tier 1 licence applicants will benefit from a full EPA fee waiver, while discussions are ongoing to determine a reduced fee structure for Tier 2 licencees.

The policy aims to eliminate financial barriers that have long deterred gold buyers from regularising their operations.

In a recent meeting with GOLDBOD, led by its CEO Sammy Gyamfi, the Chamber welcomed this new licencing regime and expressed support for its implementation.

The two bodies also discussed challenges facing gold traders, including EPA regulations and enforcement timelines.

The Ghana Gold Board has received over 200 applications for Tier 2 licences. By June 21, 2025, only licenced buyers will be permitted to purchase gold; violators risk facing regulatory sanctions.

The Chamber of Licenced Gold Buyers and GOLDBOD’s partnership is to ensure a smooth licencing process and promote a responsible and sustainable gold trading sector in Ghana.

The Chamber’s leadership and members, including Founder Job Osei Tutu and Co-Founder Daniel Sarpong, praised the GOLDBOD for its policy direction.

Traditional leader Nana Adjei Sikapa (Omanhene of Nsuta Daboase), alongside other members such as Michael Kojo Fynn, Emmanuel Simpson and Eunice Gariba, attended the engagement.

For those seeking to apply for or renew Tier 1 or Tier 2 buying licences, the Chamber said detailed guidance is available through its official channels.

It’s Just a Hug – Empress Gifty Stirs Social Media Buzz With Bold United Showbiz Appearance

0

Gospel singer and media personality Empress Gifty is once again in the spotlight after a lively appearance on UTV’s United Showbiz, where a light-hearted exchange with a male guest stirred mixed reactions online.

The award-winning gospel artist, known for her vibrant energy and bold fashion choices, appeared on the show last Saturday in a form-fitting outfit that turned heads.

Her cheerful demeanor and humorous interactions captivated the audience, but a warm hug with a male co-panelist during a playful segment has become the subject of social media chatter.

While the gesture was taken in stride in the studio, a short video of the hug quickly circulated online, prompting some to question its appropriateness — especially coming from a married gospel artist.

One X (formerly Twitter) user summed up the criticism: “How can a married gospel musician behave like this on live TV?” The viral comment sparked a flurry of reactions, with some condemning the act and others defending it as harmless.

Addressing the backlash, Empress Gifty responded via her Instagram story, writing: “It was just a hug. Nothing more. I’m naturally playful and won’t apologize for that.” She urged fans not to confuse warmth and joy with wrongdoing.

Her supporters stood firmly by her side, praising her openness and criticizing what they described as double standards for female gospel musicians. “Being married doesn’t mean you lose your personality,” one fan commented. “She’s allowed to be happy.”

This incident isn’t the first time Empress Gifty has challenged traditional norms in the gospel scene. Her unapologetic blend of glamour, charisma, and spirituality has made her a standout figure — admired by some, scrutinized by others.

To her younger and more progressive fans, she represents a new wave of gospel artistry that embraces individuality.

For more conservative audiences, however, her public image continues to raise questions about the boundaries of gospel expression.

Regardless of the controversy, one thing is clear: Empress Gifty remains a commanding presence in Ghana’s entertainment landscape — unafraid to be herself.

Sampamanhene Makes History at Manpong, Turning Up the Heat on Dormaahene and Sammor Duah

0

The recent developments surrounding Sampamanhene Nana Samgba Gyafla II have intensified tensions within Ghana’s chieftaincy circles, particularly in relation to Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II and Sammor Duah. Following his historic recognition at Manpong, Nana Samgba Gyafla II has emerged as a formidable figure, exerting significant influence and pressure on key traditional leaders.

The controversy stems from a longstanding chieftaincy dispute that has seen multiple legal battles and traditional arbitration efforts. Nana Samgba Gyafla II’s victory in securing his position as the paramount chief of the Sampa Traditional Area has not only solidified his authority but has also placed Dormaahene and Sammor Duah in a challenging position. Reports indicate that the National House of Chiefs and the Bono Regional House of Chiefs have been embroiled in legal proceedings regarding the legitimacy of certain chieftaincy appointments, further fueling the tensions.

The High Court in Kumasi recently ordered substituted service on Dormaahene in a contempt case involving the Bono Regional House of Chiefs. This legal maneuver underscores the complexities of the dispute, as Nana Samgba Gyafla II continues to assert his authority through both traditional and legal channels. His recognition at Manpong has added another layer to the unfolding drama, reinforcing his position within the Asante chieftaincy structure.

Observers note that the pressure on Dormaahene and Sammor Duah is mounting, with calls for clarity on the status of various chieftaincy appointments. The situation remains fluid, with potential implications for the broader traditional leadership landscape in Ghana. As events continue to unfold, the nation watches closely to see how these influential figures navigate the challenges ahead.

The chieftaincy dispute has drawn significant attention from political and traditional stakeholders, with some questioning the role of the National House of Chiefs in resolving such conflicts. The involvement of the courts in chieftaincy matters has become increasingly common, as legal battles over traditional leadership continue to shape the governance of local communities. The ruling in favor of Nana Samgba Gyafla II has strengthened his position, but it has also intensified opposition from rival factions who seek to challenge his authority.

Beyond the legal battles, the cultural significance of this dispute cannot be overlooked. Chieftaincy in Ghana is deeply rooted in tradition, and any shift in leadership dynamics has far-reaching consequences for governance, development, and community cohesion. The recognition of Nana Samgba Gyafla II at Manpong is seen as a major milestone, but it also signals a shift in power that could redefine relationships between various traditional rulers.

As tensions rise, the question remains: how will Dormaahene and Sammor Duah respond to the growing pressure? Will there be further legal challenges, or will traditional diplomacy play a role in resolving the dispute? The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the future of the Sampa chieftaincy and its broader impact on Ghana’s traditional leadership structure.

Release 2024 election defeat report

0

Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, has urged the leadership of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to make public the party’s internal report on its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The report, compiled by a committee chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, was intended to assess the party’s performance and identify reasons for its loss in the 2024 elections. However, the NPP’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, has stated that the report will remain confidential and used strictly for internal purposes.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Tuesday, June 10, Dr. Ayew Afriyie disagreed with the party’s decision to keep the findings private.

He argued that releasing the report would foster transparency and help the party rebuild trust with its members and the public.

“The National [leadership] is saying that we don’t want people to know how it went so that we can correct it and not get ridiculed in public. I disagree with the stance of the National [leadership]. I believe that it should be out. Heal the people. You have lost an election, and be teased, let them use it against you. Ghanaians understand that—they will heal from that.”

He emphasised that acknowledging the loss openly would allow the party to refocus and build credibility.

“Get into why you lost, and in two to three years, they will focus on what you’re doing that is better, regardless of how your opponents will ridicule you,” he urged.

Dr. Ayew Afriyie also pointed to internal dissatisfaction as a factor in the defeat, stating, “Another research shows that about 20% to 25% of your people voted for the NDC, and some didn’t vote at all.”

Political analysts say meaningful political renewal must begin with transparency and a readiness to face uncomfortable truths.

The party suffered a major setback, losing the presidency to John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and recorded a sharp drop in its parliamentary representation.

The committee presented its findings at an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Wednesday, April 16, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

Following the meeting, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong acknowledged receipt of the report and indicated that its findings and recommendations would be shared in due course.

Nonetheless, the party is yet to release an official version of the report.

Actor and content creator, Adebowale Adedayo, popularly known as Mr. Macaroni, has revealed that over the years, he has rejected invitations to associate with politicians at federal, state and local government levels.

He vowed never to compromise by frolicking with politicians.

Mr Macaroni, who disclosed this while reacting to the comparisons between him and chess master, Tunde Onakoya, who attracted criticisms with his recent visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, however, said he shouldn’t be the standard for other celebrities.

Mahama deserves apology for Wontumi’s offensive comments – Dr. Ayew Afriyie

0

Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, has revealed that senior members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are preparing to visit President John Dramani Mahama to formally apologise on behalf of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for alleged financial crimes, including money laundering and fraud.

In an interview on Channel One TV’s Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Tuesday, June 10, Dr. Ayew Afriyie claimed that the President may be behind Wontumi’s legal troubles.

“For Chairman Wontumi’s case, we’re going to beg. The hand behind this is bigger than the people who run the EOCO and the intelligence agencies. I will put it at the doorstep of President Mahama. Wontumi went overboard in some of his videos. And I played a lot of them to show him on June 9. I told him we will go and beg, if we have to kneel down in front of President Mahama, and we will tell him that for these videos, he [Wontumi] crossed the line,” he stated.

He acknowledged that Chairman Wontumi’s past comments — captured in widely circulated videos prior to the 2024 elections — were inappropriate and personal in nature, adding that Wontumi had agreed to apologise.

Dr. Afriyie explained that while political rivalry is expected, personal attacks based on falsehoods should not be condoned, and called for humility from party leadership in addressing the issue.

Chairman Wontumi was released by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after meeting his bail conditions on June 2 following his arrest and detention. Wontumi’s legal team on Monday, June 2, formally withdrew a motion that sought a review of his GH¢50 million bail condition. The motion, originally filed at the High Court in Accra on May 30, 2025, was slated for hearing on Tuesday, June 3. However, it was withdrawn a day earlier on Monday, June 2.

The Ashanti regional NPP Chairman was granted bail on Wednesday, May 28, with two justified sureties. His legal team, led by Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that the bail conditions were fulfilled by Friday, May 30.

Despite meeting the requirements, his release was delayed due to the pending motion for bail review, which, according to his lawyers, was filed without his explicit consent.

But after a gruelling legal effort, Wontumi’s lawyers successfully secured his release from detention.

Senior members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are preparing to visit President John Dramani Mahama to formally apologize on behalf of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, according to Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, the Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore.

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is currently investigating allegations of financial crimes, including fraud and money laundering, against Chairman Wontumi.

During an interview on Tuesday, June 10, on Channel One TV, Dr Ayew Afriye claimed that President Mahama might be behind Wontumi’s legal troubles.

“For Chairman Wontumi’s case, we’re going to beg. The hand behind this is bigger than the people who run EOCO and the intelligence agencies. I will put it at the doorstep of President Mahama. I told him we will go and beg — even if we have to kneel before President Mahama — and tell him that Wontumi crossed the line with these videos,” citinewsroom.com quoted him as saying.

Dr Afriye added that Chairman Wontumi has agreed to apologize for the remarks he made in widely circulated recordings ahead of the 2024 elections. He acknowledged that the comments were inappropriate and personal.

He urged party leadership to approach the issue with humility, noting that while political rivalry is expected, personal attacks based on falsehoods should not be condoned.

EOCO released Chairman Wontumi on June 2 after he complied with his bail conditions. His legal team formally withdrew a motion to appeal the GH¢50 million bail condition on the same day.

We’ll cooperate with police investigation into assault on journalist

Salam Mustapha is the NPP National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha is the NPP National Youth Organizer

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed its commitment to cooperating with police investigations into the alleged assault on Joy News journalist Latif Iddrisu during recent protests at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

This follows the invitation of the NPP’s Deputy National Organizer, Chris Lloyd, by the police to assist with investigations.

NPP National Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha, who accompanied Lloyd, told 1957 News on June 10, 2025, that Lloyd was granted self-recognizance bail after providing a statement.

“He was invited by the police to assist with investigations. He wrote his statement and was just granted bail,” Mustapha said.

However, Mustapha defended Lloyd’s actions, stating that he was “one of those trying to calm things down” during the protest.

“It’s interesting that they would look at Chris in that light because he was one of those who was rather trying to calm things down. But we are aiding in investigations, so anytime they need him, we will make him available.

“I was there throughout the process. I don’t want to go into details because some of the things I heard in court yesterday — the charges — I was shocked,” he added.

These comments come in the wake of the court remand of Theophilus Thompson, an NPP supporter charged with assaulting Iddrisu during the demonstration against the detention of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako.

While pledging cooperation, Mustapha hinted at the possibility of protests if members are “wrongfully arrested.”

“If they wrongfully arrest any of our members, we will protest. The protesters were all peaceful until the police came and escalated the situation. If the police had not come to do what they did, there wouldn’t have been any problem at all,” he said.

Deputy General Secretary Chris Lloyd, who was also interviewed, stated that he is ready to cooperate at any time.

“The police have been very professional. We are ready to cooperate with them; even if they call me at 1 a.m., I will come,” he said.

About the assault:

Latif Iddrisu, who was covering a protest by NPP supporters at EOCO, reported that the supporters had clashed with police and allegedly vandalized two police vehicles before he was assaulted by some of the protesters.

Video footage shared by JoyNews showed a chaotic scene, with a large crowd surrounding Iddrisu as he attempted to report on the situation.

“Nobody has attacked any police!” some angry supporters shouted at the journalist upon hearing the details of his live report.

During the broadcast, Iddrisu was surrounded by several supporters expressing their displeasure, with some seen heckling and shoving him.

At one point, the reporter noted that he had been struck by a stone.

“So right now, I have been assaulted with this pebble, and the assault is captured live on television,” Iddrisu reported.

23-Year-Old Lady Divorces Husband After One Month, Because Of This

0

The story of 23-year-old Adoration Zenzekile has captured widespread attention, not only for the abrupt end of her marriage but also for the courage she demonstrated in choosing herself over a toxic situation.

Just four weeks after tying the knot, Adoration announced on social media that her marriage had ended due to deep-rooted issues that began during her engagement and worsened after the wedding.

Adoration revealed that “irreconcilable differences” between her and her husband, Nhlamulo, along with constant mistreatment from her mother-in-law, were key reasons behind the breakdown of her marriage. Living in the same compound as her husband’s parents, she faced ongoing disrespect, which was made worse by Nhlamulo’s failure to defend or support her. Instead of protecting her, he allegedly prioritized his mother’s feelings over the well-being of their marriage.

Adding to her pain was the false accusation of infidelity. Adoration firmly denied these claims, stating that they were used by her ex-husband to shift the blame for the failed marriage. She made it clear that her decision to leave was about preserving her mental health and dignity, not due to any betrayal. Her heartfelt message on Facebook and TikTok touched many, especially young women, as it opened a window into the emotional and social struggles some brides face behind closed doors.

Adoration’s bravery sparked an outpouring of support online. Many commended her for walking away from a harmful environment instead of enduring it. People like Matimba Nxumalo and Lusanda Gumede praised her for her strength, while others offered prayers and positive words, emphasizing the importance of choosing peace over societal expectations.

Her story has brought attention to broader issues, particularly the pressure on young women in marriage and the role of in-laws in shaping or damaging relationships. It also highlights how cultural expectations can often discourage women from speaking up, making Adoration’s decision to share her experience publicly even more powerful.

Adoration Zenzekile’s journey, though painful, is a reminder of the importance of self-worth and mental well-being. It teaches us that walking away from a toxic situation is not a failure but a sign of strength. Her voice joins those of others who are choosing healing over silence, showing that even in heartbreak, there is hope and resilience.

SMEs join Ghana’s drive to cut plastic waste

0

Ghana’s efforts to reduce plastic pollution is gaining momentum, driven by collaborative action and growing commitment from the private sector.

At the heart of this momentum is the Voluntary Pact to Reduce Single-Use Plastics, a business-led initiative co-designed by Plastic Punch, a local environmental NGO, in partnership with Ghanaian businesses and supported by the German Development Cooperation, under the global programme, Go Circular.

The initiative is backed by the Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology (MEST) and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).

The Voluntary Pact brings together supermarkets, retail businesses, banks, and markets across Ghana, committed to cutting single-use plastics (SUP) by 50 per cent by 2030.

Inspired by best practices from Germany, Kenya or Rwanda, the Pact adopts home-grown solutions to reduce single-use plastic consumption, with a focus on consumer behaviour change.

A flagship campaign under the Voluntary Pact is the “Bag the Habit of Single-Use Plastic,” which encourages Ghanaians to refuse, reduce, and reuse single-use plastic bags.

It supports existing advocacy and regulatory efforts, reinforcing the idea that the shift starts with everyday choices.

At the 2025 World Environment Day celebration, key stakeholders from the EPA, Plastic Punch, the Food and Beverage Association of Ghana (FABAG), and SNEDA Supermarket emphasized the urgent need for policy reforms, business leadership, and public engagement on single use plastics.

LatexFoamPromo

The Principal Programme Officer, Intersectoral Network Development at EPA, Hobson Agyapong, said “single-use plastics pose a real threat to our environment. The collaborative spirit behind the Voluntary Pact helps us build bridges between regulators, civil society, and the private sector to create practical solutions.”

One key measure being piloted is a 50-pesewa fee on plastic bags, encouraging consumers to switch to reusable alternatives.

The Executive Director of Plastic Punch, Richmond Quarcoo, said “charging for plastic bags may seem small, but it is a powerful behavioural nudge, and it prompts consumers to bring reusable bags and think differently about waste.”

Supermarkets part of the Voluntary Pact, including SNEDA, All Needs Supermarket (Legon), and Neha Supermarket, are already rolling out the Bag the Habit campaign.

While supermarkets are a visible source of plastic bag consumption, other sectors, particularly Ghana’s vibrant food and catering industry are also a major contributor to plastic waste and play a crucial part of the solution.

To address this sector, the Go Circular Project recently completed its Business Development Programme for Circular SMEs, in partnership with Impact Footprints Africa.

The initiative supports small and medium-sized enterprises in the food and catering sector, demonstrating that in this space, it is possible to reduce reliance on single-use plastic. Participating SMEs are reintroducing sustainable, locally rooted practices, like wrapping waakye in leaves or switching to paper bags, reusable jars, and crates.

From Accra’s supermarkets to local food vendors, a national shift is underway. As Ghana rewrites its plastic story, the Voluntary Pact stands as a growing movement, and a shared responsibility for a cleaner, more circular future.

Popular Journalist Drops Revelation About Kwame Sefa Kayi’s Absence on Despite Media

News Hub Creator39min

A Ghanaian journalist, Gordon Asare Bediako, has made some shocking claims about popular broadcaster Kwame Sefa Kayi and his recent absence from Peace FM.

Speaking on Movement TV on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, Gordon said that Kwame Sefa Kayi has been prevented from returning to the station.

According to Gordon Asare Bediako, every year, Kwame Sefa Kayi usually takes a break from his morning show in January and returns in February. However, it is now June, and he has still not returned to host the show. This, Gordon says, is unusual and raises a lot of questions.

Gordon went on to say that Kwame Sefa Kayi has also been stopped from taking part in other programs and activities organized by the media house. He believes this decision is not a personal choice by Kwame Sefa Kayi but rather an action taken by the management of the media company.

He pointed fingers at Fadda Dickson, the CEO of the media house, as the one behind the decision. Gordon claimed that since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) came to power, Fadda Dickson has made it difficult for Kwame Sefa Kayi to continue working with Peace FM. He added that some people in the media believe Kwame Sefa Kayi supports the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and that could be the reason he is being sidelined.

Gordon Asare Bediako also issued a warning to the media house. He urged them to come out and speak the truth about what is really happening to Kwame Sefa Kayi. He threatened to release more serious information if they remain silent.

Wontumi’s Bold Talk Lands Him in Trouble—Kwabena Agyepong Breaks Silence

0

Kwabena Agyepong has weighed in on the recent arrest of Chairman Wontumi, suggesting that his outspoken nature may have played a role in his legal troubles. The former Press Secretary and political figure made these remarks in response to Wontumi’s detention, which has sparked widespread debate across Ghana’s political landscape. Agyepong, in his reaction, stated that Wontumi’s bold and often controversial statements may have contributed to his current predicament. He emphasized that while freedom of speech is essential, public figures must be mindful of the consequences of their words, especially in politically charged environments. His comments have fueled discussions about whether Wontumi’s arrest was politically motivated or a result of legal infractions.

Chairman Wontumi, known for his aggressive political commentary, was recently arrested and detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office. Reports indicate that his detention was linked to allegations of financial misconduct, including fraud and money laundering. His arrest has led to protests from members of the New Patriotic Party, who argue that the charges against him are an attempt to silence a key political figure. Agyepong also issued a cautionary note to former President John Mahama, urging him to be careful in navigating Ghana’s political terrain. While he did not elaborate on specific concerns, his statement has been interpreted as a warning about the unpredictable nature of political rivalries and legal battles.

The controversy surrounding Wontumi’s arrest continues to unfold, with political analysts debating its implications for Ghana’s governance and justice system. Some believe that his detention is part of a broader effort to hold influential figures accountable for financial mismanagement, while others argue that it is a politically motivated move aimed at weakening the opposition. The Economic and Organised Crime Office has maintained that its investigations are based on evidence and legal procedures, dismissing claims of political bias. However, the timing of Wontumi’s arrest, coming shortly after his latest remarks on national issues, has led to speculation about whether his outspoken nature contributed to his legal troubles.

Public reaction to the case has been mixed. Supporters of Wontumi have called for his immediate release, arguing that his detention is unjust and politically driven. Others believe that the allegations against him should be thoroughly investigated to ensure accountability. The debate has extended to social media, where discussions about corruption, governance, and political influence continue to dominate conversations. Many are waiting to see whether Wontumi will be able to clear his name or if his legal troubles will escalate further. Meanwhile, Agyepong’s remarks serve as a reminder of the delicate balance between political expression and legal accountability in Ghana’s evolving political landscape.

The controversy surrounding Wontumi’s arrest is not an isolated incident. Over the years, several political figures have faced similar legal challenges, with critics questioning whether such cases are driven by genuine concerns about corruption or political maneuvering. The latest developments suggest that Ghana’s political environment remains highly charged, with tensions between rival factions influencing public discourse. As discussions intensify, many are watching closely to see how the case unfolds and whether Wontumi will be able to defend himself against the allegations. The coming weeks will likely provide more clarity on the situation, as political figures, analysts, and citizens continue to weigh in on the matter.

Immediate past GRNMA President Kwaku Asante Krobea has declared Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye directly responsible for fatalities occurring during Ghana’s ongoing nurses’ strike.

In a televised interview on Accra-based TV3, Krobea asserted: “People are dying, and the Minister of Health is to blame. The solution lies in his bosom.”

Krobea demanded urgent inter-ministerial action, stating: “It’s time the Health Minister lobbied the Finance Minister to pay nurses their entitlements.” He dismissed ministerial appeals for nurses to resume work, revealing retired practitioners support the strike and won’t provide relief services.

The comments escalate pressure amid the 8-day strike that has paralyzed healthcare services. Krobea rejected ministerial “posturing,” insisting both government and union leadership must negotiate immediately: “The two parties must work together to find an amicable solution.” His remarks follow Tuesday’s parliamentary clash where Minority MPs demanded emergency debate on the crisis.

Drug, substance abuse poses security risk to Ghana – NPC

0

The National Peace Council (NPC) has observed with worry the increasing incidences of drug abuse among young people in Ghana, posing a threat to the nation’s security if not addressed.

It said drug and substance abuse affected the cognitive reasoning of the individual, making him or her susceptible to influence by violent extremist groups.

“For such people, any effort by any person to influence them becomes an easy thing to do, because they will not be stable in mind.

If there is any recruitment into a bad company, if there is any effort to indoctrinate them and get them into particularly violent extremism, they will easily give up and then give in to that”, Mr Frank Wilson Bodza, the Deputy Director of Conflict Management and Resolution at the NPC, said.

Mr Bodza, who said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Wa, added that drug addicts needed resources to acquire the drugs and would be committed to any person or group that offered those resources.

The interview was in relation to the national concern about the increasing rate of drug and substance abuse among young people in Ghana and the threat of violent extremism to the country.

Mr Bodza observed that the security concern of drug abuse among the youth was also about the future of the nation, as the country would lose the needed human resources due to drug and substance abuse.

“For young people to indulge in drug abuse is a critical concern to every parent, every leader of the state, including even the communities they are coming from,” he explained.

He also advised the youth against drug and substance abuse as that could jeopardise their personal security since they would be the first suspect in terms of a crime though they might be innocent of that crime.

Other issues Mr Bodza mentioned included mental health challenges, which would bring a burden on the state to cater for such people.

Talking about interventions to address drug abuse, the NPC Deputy Director stressed the need for psychological support by the state to restore drug addicts to normalcy.

He also advocated social support for drug addicts in the form of employment, education, and skills training, among others, to get them engaged and gradually dissuade them from those drugs and substances of abuse.

“As far as people are engaged meaningfully, they will move away from some of these negative tendencies (drug abuse),” Mr Bodza explained.

Why Dancehall culture keeps declining

0

Episode is a reggae/dancehall artiste Episode is a reggae/dancehall artiste

Ghanaian Dancehall artiste Epixode has expressed concern about the gradual decline of Dancehall music, attributing its fall to a combination of industry missteps, misguided fan perceptions, and the genre’s branding challenges.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Okay FM, the award-winning artiste did not hold back in dissecting what he believes went wrong.

According to Epixode, Dancehall—once a dominant force—began losing steam globally long before the Ghanaian scene started to feel the effects. He pointed out that the genre only saw a slight revival when Jamaican star Vybz Kartel managed to release music from behind bars, rekindling global interest.

“Until Vybz Kartel came out of prison, Dancehall was actually gone. We’d find Dancehall artistes doing Afrobeats and stuff. Afrobeats is ruling the world,” he noted.

He admitted that Ghanaian Dancehall artistes failed to sustain the genre’s momentum during its prime, roughly five years ago. One of the main reasons, he said, was that artistes focused more on mimicking the West than connecting with their own cultural roots.

Epixode explained that many songs were filled with themes that didn’t resonate with the average Ghanaian listener—songs about guns, violence, and gang rivalries—which alienated potential fans who couldn’t relate to that lifestyle.

“When we started it, we misinformed the fans,” he said. “The people are not able to relate to our songs more than our culture. We try to copy the West.”

Another issue, Epixode believes, lies in how rivalry among Dancehall artistes is misunderstood and often poorly handled. While clashes and lyrical battles are part of the genre’s DNA, he argued that Ghanaian artistes sometimes allow personal emotions to spill over, blurring the line between showbiz and real-life tension.

This, in turn, affects how fans respond—and not always in a healthy way.

“The fans did not understand that the rivalry in Dancehall is for a purpose. We, the artistes, are too emotional sometimes to control our feelings, and that influences the fans,” he said.

The ripple effect of this behavior, he noted, extends to the corporate world. Dancehall, often perceived as rowdy or aggressive, struggles to attract sponsorship and support from major brands.

Only a few artistes who have deliberately rebranded themselves to appear more “corporate-friendly” are considered safe bets for endorsements or event partnerships.

“When corporate bodies want to come in, there is a certain misconception about the Dancehall space. Nobody wants to affiliate with us unless it’s one or two of us who have branded ourselves to suit the corporate space,” he lamented.

In contrast, Epixode referenced a shift happening in Jamaica itself, where the birthplace of Dancehall is now witnessing a push for peace and positive messaging—something he believes Ghanaian artistes can learn from if they want the genre to survive.

For Epixode, the survival of Dancehall depends not only on the creativity of the artistes but also on their ability to evolve and stay grounded in local realities. Without that, he fears the genre may continue to decline in influence both at home and abroad.

I told Wontumi that we would go and beg Mahama, even kneel if necessary

Wontumi went overboard in some of his videos. And I played a lot of them to show him on June 9.

Bank of Ghana Releases Exchange Rates for Tuesday, June 10, 2025

0

The Bank of Ghana has released the official exchange rates for major foreign currencies for Tuesday, June 10, 2025. These rates help businesses, banks, and the general public to know the buying and selling prices of the U.S. dollar, the British pound, and the euro in the Ghanaian cedi.

According to the Bank of Ghana, the exchange rates are based on the average interbank rates used by commercial banks during trading on Monday, June 9, 2025.

For the U.S. dollar, the buying rate is GH¢10.2449 while the selling rate is GH¢10.2551. This means if a person wants to exchange U.S. dollars for cedis, the bank will buy one dollar at GH¢10.2449. However, if someone wants to buy a U.S. dollar, the bank will sell it at GH¢10.2551.

The British pound sterling is trading higher. The buying rate is GH¢13.8880, and the selling rate is GH¢13.9029. This shows that the pound is stronger than the dollar in the exchange market.

The euro, which is the currency used by many countries in Europe, is also trading at a higher rate than the dollar. The Bank of Ghana stated that the buying rate is GH¢11.6981, while the selling rate is GH¢11.7087.

These daily rates are important because they affect the prices of goods and services in Ghana, especially imported items. Businesses that deal in foreign goods use these rates to calculate how much they will pay or receive in transactions.

The Bank of Ghana regularly publishes exchange rates to provide transparency and guide economic activities in the country. Ghanaians are advised to check with their banks or trusted financial institutions for exact rates when making currency exchanges.

Bryan Acheampong’s ₵5 Billion Scandal Explodes After Wontumi Bail Intervention—EOCO Takes Action

0

Brynn Achampong has found himself at the center of a political storm as the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) receives a docket implicating him in a ₵5 billion scandal. This revelation comes just days after he played a pivotal role in securing bail for embattled New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Chairman Wontumi. The timing of this development has raised eyebrows, with many questioning whether Acheampong’s involvement in Wontumi’s release has inadvertently placed him under scrutiny.

Chairman Wontumi, known in private life as Bernard Antwi Boasiako, was arrested by EOCO on May 27, 2025, over multiple allegations, including money laundering. His detention sparked widespread concern among party supporters, who rallied for his release. After several days in custody, Wontumi was granted bail on May 28, set at GH₵50 million, with two sureties to be justified. However, he struggled to meet the conditions, prolonging his stay behind bars. It was Bryan Acheampong, the Member of Parliament for Abetifi, who stepped in to secure Wontumi’s release. Acheampong reportedly provided the necessary documentation to meet the bail conditions, ensuring Wontumi’s freedom on June 2, 2025. His intervention was met with jubilation among NPP supporters, who hailed him as a savior in the unfolding political drama.

Just as the dust was settling on Wontumi’s release, EOCO received a fresh docket alleging Acheampong’s involvement in a ₵5 billion scandal. The details of the case remain murky, but sources suggest that the investigation could be linked to financial irregularities and questionable transactions. The timing of the revelation has led to speculation about whether Acheampong’s role in Wontumi’s bail has triggered scrutiny into his own financial dealings. Some believe that the scandal could be part of a broader political maneuvering ahead of the 2025 elections.

The unfolding scandal has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s political landscape. Acheampong, a key figure in the ruling party, now finds himself embroiled in a controversy that could have far-reaching consequences. Supporters of the NPP have expressed concern over what they perceive as a politically motivated attack, while critics argue that the allegations warrant thorough investigation. Social media has been ablaze with speculation, with some suggesting that Acheampong’s involvement in Wontumi’s bail may have inadvertently placed him in EOCO’s crosshairs.

As EOCO delves into the ₵5 billion scandal, all eyes will be on Acheampong and how he navigates the storm. Will he fight back against the allegations, or will this mark a turning point in his political career? One thing is certain—Ghana’s political scene is never short of drama, and this latest development is set to dominate headlines in the coming weeks. The implications of this case could extend beyond Acheampong himself, influencing the political dynamics within the NPP and shaping public perception ahead of the next elections. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether Acheampong can weather the storm or if this scandal will redefine his political trajectory.

Good News for Builders: Cement Prices Falling as Cedi Gains Strength

Ghanaians have something to smile about—especially those working on building projects. Cement prices, which have been painfully high for months, are finally coming down thanks to the improving value of the cedi.

On Monday, June 2, 2025, prices dropped to between GHS 110 and GHS 115 in most areas. In some shops, it’s still around GHS 120, but that’s still better than the previous GHS 130 price tag that had people complaining.

This welcome drop follows a boost in the cedi’s performance, now trading at around GHS 10.2 to the dollar, compared to the GHS 16 rate a few weeks ago. With the cedi gaining ground, importers are now able to bring in cement at cheaper rates.

One shopkeeper in Accra shared, “The old stock is gone, and the new one costs less, so we can pass those savings on to our customers. It’s a win-win.”

Ghanaians across the country are hopeful that this trend will continue, especially as more affordable prices make it easier for people to build homes and complete delayed projects. For now, it’s a much-needed break for anyone working with cement—and a reason to be hopeful about what’s next.
