670,000 more Ghanaians join NHIS – Akandoh – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has recorded a substantial boost in enrolment and system reliability, with over 670,000 additional citizens registered in the past year.

Delivering an update on the health sector’s performance on Friday, July 18, the Minister noted that total enrolment had risen from 15 million in 2024 to 15.67 million by mid-2025—an encouraging sign of growing public trust in the scheme.

“Ladies and gentlemen, today, 15.67 million Ghanaians are enrolled in the NHIS – an increase of over 670,000 from last year. What this means is that 670,000 more Ghanaians are now benefiting from health insurance coverage,” Akandoh stated.

He described the increase as evidence that recent government interventions in the health insurance sector are yielding results.

He attributed the rise in enrolment to stronger financing mechanisms, prompt claims payments, and structural reforms that have improved service delivery.

“In the first half of 2025 alone, the NHIA disbursed over GHS 1.38 billion to providers, reflecting a system that is stronger, more responsive, and more reliable than ever before,” he noted.

Akandoh underscored that these disbursements demonstrate the government’s commitment to enhancing the scheme’s functionality and building a more inclusive health insurance system.

He also reassured stakeholders that the Ministry will continue to implement policies aimed at expanding access, enhancing quality, and ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of the NHIS.

Ghana Hostels Limited has come under heavy backlash following the release of its hostel fees for the 2025/2026 academic year for its facilities on the University of Ghana campus.

The price list for its halls, popularly known as the Pentagon Hostels, shows a sharp increase of almost 90% compared to the 2023/2024 academic year.

Despite facing public criticism over similar fee hikes in 2023, the management has once again raised prices for the upcoming academic year.

The document, titled “Approved Hostel Rates for 2025/2026 Academic Year – UG-Legon Facility,” revealed that a 1-in-a-room with air conditioning at New Pent now costs GH¢40,329, up from GH¢24,362 in 2024.

A 1-in-a-room without air conditioning at New Pent has risen to GH¢24,835, from GH¢21,820 in 2024.

The cheapest option listed is a 4-in-a-room at Old Pent, now costing GH¢7,492, up from GH¢4,928 in 2024.

Social media users have widely criticised the hostel management for the steep increases, especially given what many describe as favourable economic conditions.

Hassan Ayariga is the founder and leader of the All People’s Congress (APC) Hassan Ayariga is the founder and leader of the All People’s Congress (APC)

Tempers flared on live television during the Thursday, July 17, 2025, edition of the Good Evening Ghana program when Hassan Ayariga, Founder and Leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), angrily called into the show to blast the spokesperson of the self-proclaimed Igbo King in Ghana.

His outburst followed growing controversies surrounding the king, Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu’s alleged acquisition of over 50 acres of land to build an “Igbo Village” community.

Ayariga accused Ihenetu’s representatives of misleading Ghanaians with their denial of plans to build a community in the country — a controversy that has sparked widespread public outcry and raised serious concerns about Ghana’s sovereignty.

According to Ayariga, there is video evidence showing Ihenetu making claims about acquiring land to build a community in Ghana.

He, therefore, questioned why the king’s representatives were now denying those statements.

“I want to tell the journalist sitting down there that he should stop. Tell him that he should stop misleading Ghanaians.

“Even they said that the man did not acquire land. He himself has said he has land,” he said.

Ayariga shared further details, claiming that Eze Ihenetu had been invited by the National Intelligence Bureau (BNI) and subsequently arrested by National Security operatives.

Although the Igbo King’s representatives refuted the claim, Ayariga insisted that the arrest did occur and added that Ihenetu was detained for a day.

“It was an invitation by NIB, but he was arrested by National Security. He doesn’t even know what he is talking about. Ask him whether he was not detained for 24 hours. Ask him how can you invite somebody and detain me? What is that kind of invitation? I am sending you a video of him being detained,” he disclosed.

The politician issued a stern warning to Eze Ihenetu and his associates, urging them to desist from acting as though they were above the law.

He cautioned that such conduct — especially actions that could pose dangerous risks — might escalate into conflict between the people of Ghana and Nigeria.

“He should be careful of what he is saying so that he can move out of that room alive. He should stop lying and misbehaving. That is not a threat. When you come and lie that your chief did not claim to have a land when there’s video evidence of him saying he has bought 50 acres of land.

“The Nigerians come and lie anyhow and think they can come and sit down and behave as if the country is for them. What do you mean? You people should be very careful in this country. You cannot sit down and talk as if this country is yours, and I am angry because of the way they are talking. He is not a king in Ghana,” he warned.

GH¢49m Adu-Boahene Case: Former UMB Bank officer requests new lawyer in open court

Mildred Donkor, the third accused in the ongoing GH¢49m National Security trial involving former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahene, has reportedly fired the former Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, from representing her in the case.

According to a report by GHOne, Donkor, who, together with Adu Boahene and two other accused, has been slapped with 11 charges over the alleged transfer of GH¢49 million (approximately $7 million) from the bureau’s account to the former NSB chief’s personal account, said Atta Akyea, who was the lawyer for all the accused persons, should no longer represent her.

She reportedly told court during proceedings on Friday, July 18, 2025, that she wished for a “separate lawyer.”

“I wish to take a separate lawyer!”, the third accused is quoted to have said.

The Office of the Attorney General filed 11 corruption-related charges against Adu Boahene and three other accused persons, the wife of Adu Boahene, Angela Adjei-Boateng; his company, Advantage Solutions Limited; and a banker, Mildred Donkor.

Mildred Donkor is a former UMB Bank relationship officer for the couple and their company, BNC.

Court filings show she also served as a director for Advantage Solutions Limited, which was allegedly used as a holding company to launder the stolen funds.

“The monies which A1 and A2 moved from the National BNC bank account into the Private BNC’s bank account were paid through a complex web of companies, ultimately owned by A4 (Advantage Solutions),” the AG’s court filing states.

Investigations further revealed that the stolen funds were used to acquire properties in Accra, Kumasi, and London, luxury vehicles, and to fund the couple’s lavish lifestyle.

Despite her denials, Donkor was found to be a director in all companies used in the scheme and actively participated in the day-to-day operations.

Mildred Donkor was charged with several counts of conspiracy to commit money laundering and money laundering.

‘Rubbish talk’ – Chelsea fans blast ESPN pundit over his Club World Cup remark

Steve Nicloe is an outspoken sports pundit on ESPN Steve Nicloe is an outspoken sports pundit on ESPN

A renowned sports pundit, Steve Nicole, has come under heavy criticism from Chelsea fans over a comment he made concerning the team’s ability to clinch the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

During an analysis on Spanish media outlet Entertainment and Sports Programming Network (ESPN) on July 17, 2025, the former footballer asserted that the poor nature of the pitch in the United States of America (USA) helped Chelsea win the tournament.

According to him, when Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and other teams the Blues defeated play brilliantly on their usual pitches in their home grounds, their performance is better than they did in the US.

The former Sheffield Wednesday player added that the turf quality annoyed him a lot and that he believes it favored Chelsea to thrash PSG 3-0 to win the maiden FIFA Club World Cup tournament.

“Another thing that annoyed me is the fact that they laid turf on our grass fields on top of turf. It changes the game. That’s not how these teams play, regardless of what country they’re in. That’s not how they play the game.

“The only reason Chelsea won is because of the field. If you keep banging those balls, knowing the ball would stay in bounds, it wouldn’t go outside. I just couldn’t take it seriously enough,” Nicole said during the discussion.

His remark did not sit well with Chelsea fans who took to the comment section on X to express their displeasure.

They questioned his intellect and knowledge of sports, saying his comments show he is incompetent and does not deserve to sit on television to analyse sporting issues.

Others fumed that either he personally dislikes the club or supports London rivals Arsenal, hence spewing such an unprofessional remark to discredit Chelsea for their success.

Akwatia NPP youth group warns against candidate imposition ahead of by-election

0

A youth group, identified itself with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Akwatia constituency of the Eastern region, known as the Gallant Patriots, has cautioned the party’s leadership against imposing a candidate in the upcoming parliamentary by-election.

Addressing a press conference in Akyem Boadua, the group’s convenor, Akonoba Nana Boadu, stressed that any attempt to sidestep an open and democratic selection process could deepen existing cracks within the party. He maintained that such a move could prove detrimental to the NPP’s chances of retaining the seat.

He urged the NPP leadership to allow all eligible and competent members in the Akwatia constituency to contest freely, stating that this approach would not only foster party unity but also enhance their chances of victory.

Boadu warned that if the national executives fail to heed their call and proceed with imposing a candidate, the party risks losing the seat due to widespread discontent and voter apathy among the grassroots.

The Akwatia by-election follows the death of the Member of Parliament for the area, Ernest Kumi, which has rendered the seat vacant, necessitating a fresh contest to elect a new representative.

Corruption is not destiny but a decision – Dr Akwasi Opong-Fosu

0

Dr Akwasi Opong-Fosu is the Chair of Africa Global Emergence Centre Dr Akwasi Opong-Fosu is the Chair of Africa Global Emergence Centre

Dr Akwasi Opong-Fosu, Chairperson of the Africa Global Emergence Centre, has stated that corruption is not destiny, it is a decision that is repeated, tolerated, and reinforced.

He contrasted this with integrity, which he described as a decision that is principled, courageous, and consistent.

Dr Opong-Fosu made these remarks at the Anti-Corruption Roundtable Forum, co-hosted by the Global Chamber of Commerce and the Sonoco International Business Department of the University of South Carolina.

The forum, held under the theme “Towards a New Anti-Corruption Agenda: Lessons from Diverse Stakeholders in Africa and the West,” brought together African and Western leaders from the public and private sectors, civil society, and academia.

It provided a platform to explore new issues and solutions to the persistent problem of corruption and its impact on African business.

Dr Opong-Fosu emphasised that effective anti-corruption efforts in a rapidly changing world require a shared understanding of the evolving nature of the problem and a willingness to embrace innovative solutions.

He urged all stakeholders to “speak the truth, even when it is inconvenient; hold themselves and others accountable; and build institutions that will outlast them.”

“Let us not just discuss corruption, let us defeat it with policy, with leadership, and with collective resolve,” he added.

The former minister described corruption not merely as a bureaucratic failure but as a direct attack on human dignity.

“It robs nations of opportunity, weakens institutions, and undermines public trust,” he said.

Dr Opong-Fosu cited global statistics to illustrate the scale of the problem. He noted that corruption drains over $2.6 trillion annually from the global economy, more than 5% of global GDP—and over $1 trillion is lost to bribes each year.

In developing countries, an estimated $1.26 trillion is lost annually, enough to lift 1.4 billion people out of poverty for at least six years.

For Africa alone, the loss is approximately $10 billion every year, funds that could have been used to build hospitals, fund schools, and create jobs.

“But these numbers are not just statistics. They represent stolen medicines and unbuilt roads,” he concluded.

National Sports Authority pledges full support to Ghana Esports Federation

Yaw Ampofo Ankrah is Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) Yaw Ampofo Ankrah is Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA)

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has declared its support for Esports, an online gaming competition in which amateur and professional gamers participate individually or as teams through organised leagues, often with monetary prizes on the line.

The first cited instance of an esports competition was in 1972, when players convened at Sandford University’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, for the intergalactic spacewar Olympics in which they competed for a year’s subscription to Rolling Stone magazine.

In light of this, the National Sports Authority (NSA) has announced its unwavering support for the Ghana Esports Federation (GESF) as the nation’s top esports athletes prepare to compete in the World Phygital Community Qualifiers in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Phygital games combine physical and digital elements, blending real-world activities with digital or virtual components to create hybrid gaming experiences.

The term “phygital” (physical + digital) reflects the integration of tangible, physical interactions with technology-driven gameplay, often leveraging tools like augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), sensors, or mobile devices.

The pledge was formally announced during a ceremony on July 16, 2025, where GESF led by President Igor Boumekpo, officially presented the national team to NSA Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

The World Phygital Community Qualifiers, a precursor to the Games of the Future 2025 set for December in Dubai, will feature Ghanaian athletes competing in phygital football and phygital basketball.

These innovative disciplines blend digital gaming with physical sports, showcasing a unique fusion of athleticism and esports expertise.

The qualifiers mark a significant opportunity for Ghana to shine on the global stage, with the national team, including champions After6 FC from the recent Phygital Football Tournament, vying for a spot in the prestigious international event.

During the presentation, Boumekpo expressed gratitude for the NSA’s backing, emphasising the importance of collaboration in elevating Ghana’s esports ecosystem.

“We can’t do without the National Sports Authority’s support,” he stated, highlighting the federation’s commitment to fostering competitive gaming and nurturing young talent.

Director-General Ankrah offered words of encouragement to the athletes, affirming the NSA’s dedication to supporting the growth of esports as a legitimate and impactful sport in Ghana.

The NSA’s pledge includes logistical and strategic support to ensure the team is well-prepared for the international competition.

The GESF, recognised by the NSA in March 2024 as the sole governing body for esports in Ghana, has been making strides in promoting phygital sports.

The federation’s successful organisation of the maiden Phygital Football Tournament in January 2025, which saw After6 FC qualify for the world stage, further highlights Ghana’s growing influence in global esports.

As Ghana prepares for the qualifiers, the NSA’s support signals a broader commitment to integrating esports into the national sports framework.

With a population of over 13 million gamers, Ghana is positioning itself as a potential hub for esports in West Africa, aligning with the GESF’s mission to drive innovation and engagement in the sector.

The upcoming qualifiers in Abu Dhabi represent a pivotal moment for Ghanaian esports, as the nation aims to make its mark in the dynamic world of phygital sports.

A video capturing Trobu Member of Parliament, Gloria Owusu, and her colleagues crying during a press conference has surfaced online.

The footage shows her visibly worried and in tears, following a heated parliamentary session held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, regarding the death of New Patriotic Party MP, Ernest Kumi.

During the proceedings, the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, proposed a by-election in Akwatia to fill the vacant seat, a suggestion that stirred strong reactions within the chamber.

In protest of what they considered early and insensitive timing, members of the Minority staged a walkout from Parliament, expressing solidarity with their late colleague and his grieving family.

It was during this that Gloria Owusu, while addressing the press with her colleagues, was captured crying.

According to her, it was inappropriate for the Majority Leader to push for a by-election before the family had formally notified Parliament of the MP’s death, in line with parliamentary protocols.

“We wish to clarify that it was never our intention to walk out or show any disrespect to the Speaker of Parliament. Our actions stem from deep sadness following the passing of our colleague, Member of Parliament Ernest Kumi.

“It is disheartening that so soon after his demise, the Majority Leader is insisting on a by-election in Akwatia. During that discussion, the Speaker rightfully reminded the House that there are established rules and procedures governing such matters,” the MP said.

She continued; “In accordance with parliamentary tradition, the late MP’s family must first formally notify Parliament of his passing before any steps can be taken.”

‘Africa’s reparations call no longer a whisper’

0

President John Dramani Mahama at the AU Congress President John Dramani Mahama at the AU Congress

President John Dramani Mahama has made a powerful declaration when he presented a progress report in Malabo on the AU’s 2025 Theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations”.

He said, “Africa’s call for reparative justice is no longer a whisper, it is a unified demand grounded in historical truth, moral clarity and our unwavering commitment to dignity. As we implement the 2025 theme of the year on “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through reparations”, we reaffirm our shared resolve to correct historical wrongs and injustices through restitution, healing and holistic systemic transformation.”

Addressing the 7th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union, President Mahama stated that notable progress has been achieved by the AU Commission and member states in implementing the theme.

He expressed particular satisfaction with the recent decision by the Executive Council to extend the focus on reparations for a decade, covering the period from 2026 to 2036.

“This undoubtedly affords us, as a Union, the opportunity to sustain the momentum for the realisation of this noble cause, as well as map out well-thought-out strategies to mobilise adequate resources to champion implementation of the theme domestically,” President Mahama stated.

Reparations must shift from public discourse to state policy. Every African government must prioritise reparations as a national project, integrating them into diplomatic agendas and legal frameworks. Collective action through the African Union and other regional bodies will strengthen negotiations, ensuring unified demands.

President Mahama issued a call for global partnership, saying, “We call upon all nations, within and beyond Africa, to partner with us in shaping a more just and equitable world for the sons and daughters of the motherland.”

The Ghanaian President noted the deep connection between reparations and African identity and dignity.

“Restitution to the African, therefore, is restoration of our full human dignity,” he stated, adding that the movement aims “to speak of history on African terms, of healing deep civilizational wounds and of restoring to African peoples our rightful agency in shaping our past, present and future.”

He underscored the necessity of reparations for African progress and unity, arguing, “We cannot speak of development without identity or speak of unity without acknowledging the erasure that has fractured our heritage.”

Africa’s true independence hinges on securing reparations. Only through reparations can African nations rebuild their economies to a modern, competitive level. These funds would correct centuries of exploitation, enabling sustainable development, infrastructure modernisation, and investment in education and healthcare, key pillars of sovereignty.

The struggle for reparations is arduous, as none of the former colonial powers will willingly agree to pay these substantial sums. Historical injustices have been systematically ignored, and the political will to rectify them remains lacking. Overcoming this resistance requires persistent advocacy and international pressure.

President Mahama stressed the importance of a unified African narrative on the global stage and encouraged robust partnerships, particularly with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Looking ahead, he announced that Ghana and Togo will co-sponsor a high-level event in the margins of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2025 “to further bolster efforts at achieving the justice and closure which has eluded us for centuries.”

“As we do more to correct historical wrongs, we are reasserting our full humanity. We are reaffirming our sovereignty. We are reigniting the flame of dignity that has always burned within the African soul,” assuring the Union of Ghana’s continued support for this agenda towards “The Africa We Want.”

This is not a request, it is the rightful demand of African nations. We reject handouts and empty humanitarian gestures. What we insist upon is full and comprehensive restitution for centuries of theft, including:

• Financial compensation for generations of forced labour, systemic violence, and stolen resources.

• Technology transfer to bridge industrialisation gaps and empower self-sufficient economies.

• Reparations funds, managed transparently, to allocate resources for reparative justice, including education, cultural restoration, and economic empowerment.

But it was 19-year-old Agyemang, now with Brighton, who stole the spotlight and showed once again why she is one of England’s most exciting young players.

Coming off the bench late on, she struck the equaliser that kept Sarina Wiegman’s side alive, making her mark in a big tournament just months after scoring a dream goal on her England debut in April against Belgium in the UEFA Nations League.

That night, she had come on for Jessica Park in the 80th minute and volleyed home just 45 seconds later, a glimpse of the fearless impact she would later bring to the Euros.

“It means a lot to me. I am really grateful for the opportunity to come in, make my debut, and score my first goal,” Agyemang said at the time, promising fans there was “a lot more to come”.

On Thursday, she delivered on that promise.

After Agyemang’s vital goal, the match went into extra time where both sides missed chances to win it.

The game headed for penalties, setting up a nerve-shredding shootout that saw Sweden goalkeeper Jennifer Falk set a Women’s Euro record with four saves.

But in the end, even Falk’s heroics couldn’t deny England.

She missed her chance to seal victory for Sweden when she skied a potentially winning penalty over the bar.

England keeper Hannah Hampton saved two spot-kicks and watched as 18-year old Smilla Holmberg blasted Sweden’s final penalty over, moments after Bronze had coolly buried hers.

England’s dramatic 3-2 shootout win puts them into their fourth semifinal in the last five Women’s Euros, and makes them the first defending champions to reach this stage since Germany in 2009.

Now, with Italy waiting in the semifinals on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, in Geneva, all eyes will be on Michelle Agyemang, the Ghanaian-descended teenager whose fearless energy and timely goals have turned her into England’s new secret weapon when it matters most.

“I Was Raised to Sit with Decision Makers, Not Just Follow Them” – NAPO On His Political Journey

0

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, widely known as NAPO, shared insights into his political journey, revealing that it comes from a deep-rooted sense of duty cultivated from his childhood as reported by Myjoyonline.

In an interview on JoyNews’ Personality Profile on July 17, the former Manhyia South MP highlighted the influence of his family in shaping his views on public service.

“My upbringing was centered around political awareness,” NAPO explained, emphasizing that his family’s longstanding involvement in politics exposed him to decision-making from a young age.

Rather than simply observing from the sidelines, he was taught to engage with leaders and decision-makers directly.

He recalled how his childhood was steeped in values that prioritized impact over mere participation.

“I was brought up to cherish one thing, public service, and not only public service, but bringing value through public service,” he said

Public service was not just a family value for NAPO—it was a life blueprint.

From an early age, he was involved in various service-oriented groups, including the Boy Scouts, altar boy duties, and the Red Cross Society.

“Even deciding to belong to which associations growing up were all the associations that brought public service to the fore,” he stated, pointing to how these early experiences shaped his understanding of service.

For NAPO, public service isn’t about the scale of the action, but the ability to make a lasting impact.

Kaywa breaks silence on how ‘Jennifer Lomotey’ saga was settled behind closed doors

0

Renowned Ghanaian music producer Kaywa has shared new details about the controversy surrounding the 2017 hit song .

The song’s success was nearly overshadowed by backlash over a tribal reference in Sarkodie’s verse. While many assumed it was just a lyrical blunder, Kaywa revealed it was far more serious.

Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, the producer recounted that the track was originally titled , but was renamed after Sarkodie freestyled the now-famous “Jennifer Lomotey” line.

The verse sparked outrage among the Krobo community, with a youth group, Kloma Hengme, threatening legal action against Sarkodie, Kaywa, and singer Kurl Songx.

“They actually sent us a notice through their lawyers,” Kaywa confirmed, explaining that the group demanded an apology, a re-edit of the song, a media ban on airplay, and GH₵2 million compensation to the Krobo people.

According to Kaywa, neither he nor Sarkodie anticipated that the line would cause offense—they believed it was just a vibe.

However, the controversy escalated, prompting a series of meetings with chiefs, legal representatives, and other concerned parties.

The conclusion was that the song had to be pulled down—a task nearly impossible at the time, as it had already saturated the airwaves and was blasting from speakers across the country.

Faced with mounting pressure, Kaywa disclosed that they re-recorded a version of the song without the tribal reference, but it was never widely released.

The reason, he explained, was that Sarkodie felt changing the line would distort the original vibe of the track. Instead, they agreed to clarify the intent behind the lyrics during interviews to ease public tension.

To Kaywa, the incident served as a learning moment—highlighting the importance of cultural sensitivity and thorough review before releasing music.

Despite the controversy, remains one of the most talked-about collaborations between Kaywa and Sarkodie.

0

Accra is set to become the first city in a new global network of memorials honouring victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, with a symbolic monument to be installed at the PWD triangle outside City Hall.

The announcement was made on Thursday when the Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, visited the proposed memorial site alongside the Mayor of Accra, Hon Michael Kpakpo Allotey, as part of his five-day trade mission to Africa, aimed at strengthening economic partnerships, cultural connections, and historical reconciliation.

Addressing dignitaries and the media at the site, Mayor Khan praised the energy and vision of the Mayor of Accra, describing him as the youngest Mayor Accra has ever had.

He noted the enduring ties between the two capital cities, underscoring the contribution of the Ghanaian diaspora to London’s multicultural identity.

“London and Accra are capital cities connected to each other, we in London have many, many Londoners, tens of thousands of Londoners, who are proud to be Londoners but also proud of their Ghanaian origin,” he said.

He stressed the importance of transforming a painful shared history into a future of solidarity and action, referring to the planned memorial as a platform for reflection, learning, and forward-looking dialogue.

“This commemoration here is really important. Yes, we have a legacy that is sometimes negative and shameful, but that should be a springboard for going forward with optimism,” he noted.

Sir Khan expressed optimism about deepening collaboration between the two cities, adding, “I’m looking forward to us building a bridge between Londoners and the people of Accra. A bridge of friendship and collaboration.”

He thanked Mayor Allotey for his warm hospitality and leadership, and was hopeful of “ working closely” with him.

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, announced bold initiatives aimed at aligning the city’s development with global trends, including the introduction of electric buses from London within two years.

“These electric buses will operate within the city, helping to reduce transport fares, minimise air pollution, and attract London-based businesses to invest in Accra, thereby boosting our business sector,” he told journalists after the inspection.

He also revealed plans to implement a 24-hour economy inspired by London’s model.

“We will learn from their experience and implement improvements, such as fixing streetlights in markets to enhance security for traders and installing cameras to ensure people’s safety,” he said.

The visit marks a significant step in reviving sister-city cooperation between London and Accra, rooted in shared history and a joint commitment to sustainable urban development.

FDA approves commercial production of snake anti-venom – Akandoh

0

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has granted market authorisation for the commercial production of Snake Anti-Venom Serum in Ghana, a move Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh says marks a turning point in the country’s pharmaceutical manufacturing journey.

Delivering a sector performance update on Friday, July 18, the Minister described the FDA’s approval as a major milestone in Ghana’s quest to become self-reliant in producing essential medical supplies.

“I am happy to inform you that one of our private sector partners has obtained market authorisation from Ghana’s FDA to produce Snake Anti-Venom Serum on a commercial scale, marking the next step in our goal to shift Ghana from a consumer to a producer,” Akandoh announced.

He explained that the approval follows active collaboration between the National Vaccine Institute, the FDA, and key pharmaceutical industry stakeholders. This, he said, reflects the regulator’s growing capacity to support innovation while ensuring safety and quality standards.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, the government has pledged and remains dedicated to making Ghana a centre for vaccine manufacturer.

“In this regard, the National Vaccine Institute is collaborating with the regulatory authority and pharmaceutical industry stakeholders to bring this plan to reality,” the Minister noted.

Weeds Invade Sofoline-Abuakwa Road – DailyGuide Network

Some of the overgrown weeds in the median of Sofoline to Abuakwa road

THE MEDIAN separating vehicles coming from opposing directions on the Sofoline to Abuakwa road in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region, has been overgrown with weeds lately.

The weeds have grown so tall to the extent that some of it are now covering parts of the busy road, a sad development that poses great threat to all road users.

When DAILY GUIDE visited the place last week, it was clearly detected that the weeds, which are meant to help beautify the place, have not been attended to for a long time.

Sadly, instead of helping to make the place look beautiful and send a positive image of the city to the public, the unkempt weeds have rather given a negative image about the city.

Some drivers and pedestrians who were interviewed by the paper, expressed disappointment about how the weeds have been left unattended to.

They particularly lambasted authorities at the Kwadaso and Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal Assemblies, where the busy road is located, for not working and sleeping on their jobs.

“This is a clear indication that those who are managing the city, especially both the Kwadaso and Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal Assemblies are not delivering as expected.

“They have left the weeds in the median to overgrow and dent the image of the city, and this is very unfortunate,” Opanin Yaw Frimpong, a commercial driver, lamented.

Madam Gifty Owusu, a resident of Tanoso in Kumasi, also said the unkempt weeds have the potential of blocking the view of drivers and resulting in a gory vehicle accident.

In this regard, she charged authorities in the two assemblies to wake up and do the right thing in order to prevent a possible road crash, saying “the weeds are an eyesore.”

Bank of Ghana signals economic stability ahead of July MPC meeting

0

The Bank of Ghana has stated that confidence in Ghana’s economy is returning as inflation expectations are anchored, and external buffers have strengthened.

This comes after the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of Ghana held an emergency meeting on Thursday, July 17, 2025, to review recent economic developments ahead of the scheduled 125th MPC meeting later this month.

In a statement issued on Friday, 18th July,  it, however, cautioned that the global economic outlook remains uncertain, with global growth projected to slow to 2.8% in 2025, from 3.3% in 2024, amid tight financial conditions.

According to the MPC, key economic indicators have shown significant progress with headline inflation falling for the sixth consecutive month to 13.7% in June 2025, down sharply from 23.8% in December 2024, reflecting strong disinflation momentum.

It also noted real GDP growth reached 5.3% in the first quarter of 2025, with non-oil GDP growth even higher at 6.8%, driven by robust performance in the agriculture and services sectors.

The trade surplus stood at US$5.6 billion and the current account surplus at US$3.4 billion in the first half of 2025, compared to US$1.4 billion and US$283 million in the same period last year

It further noted that Gross international reserves rose to US$11.1 billion, providing 4.8 months of import cover, up from US$8.98 billion at end-2024 and the Ghana cedi has gained 42.6% year-to-date against the US dollar, supported by strong foreign exchange inflows from gold and cocoa exports, remittances, and improved investor sentiment.

The MPC reiterated its commitment to supporting the recovery process without compromising the gains made so far. The next regular MPC meeting will take place from July 28 to 30, 2025, when the official policy rate decision will be announced.

Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu (M), and officials present at the 2025 IBES II Data Collection launch

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has officially closed the training ceremony for field officers and launched the 2025 Integrated Business Establishment Survey (IBES II) Data Collection, a comprehensive survey aimed at collecting data from over 44,000 establishments across the country.

The survey is crucial for national planning, measuring and rebasing the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and understanding production and business trends.

Data collection which begun on July 10, 2025 will continue until every establishment in the sample has been reached. The final data is expected to be available by December 2025.

Speaking at the event, the Government Statistician of Ghana, GSS, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, emphasised that, the survey is the 5th of its kind in the country’s history, with previous rounds conducted in 1962, 1987, 2003, and 2015.

He said, approximately 2,600 field officers have been trained to collect data, which will feed into national planning and policy-making.

According to him, the data collected will help shape better business environments, and more relevant policies, ultimately supporting businesses and the nation.

He underscored that, the survey is not just about collecting data; but about shaping how Ghana understands itself and informing decision-making at every stage of development.

“The data will serve as a powerful tool for businesses, policymakers, and stakeholders to make informed decisions,” he said.

Call to Action for Field Officers

Dr. Iddrisu urged the field officers at the launch of the IBES II Data collection, to uphold the highest standards of integrity, diligence, and professionalism during the data collection process, by collecting accurate and reliable data, maintaining confidentiality and data security, being respectful and courteous to respondents, as well as adhering to ethical standards and protocols

Furthermore, he emphasised that the success of the survey depends on the officers’ discipline, attention to detail, and integrity. Field officers are expected to carry themselves with dignity, stick to what they’ve been taught, and honor their oath of secrecy.

Also, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, has asked the business community to cooperate with field officers and provide necessary data to make the survey a success, adding that, “the survey’s success depends on the participation and cooperation of all stakeholders, including businesses and individuals”.

Media Support

Dr. Iddrisu on behalf of the Ghana Statistical Service, urged the media to play a crucial role in supporting the 2025 Integrated Business Establishment Survey (IBES II) by helping to tell the story, spread the word that data collection is an investment, explain the process, counter misinformation, and keep the work in the public eye.

According to him, the media is an extremely important actor in the development equation, and their support will be instrumental in ensuring the success of the survey.

“By working together, the GSS and the media can help to promote the importance of data collection and its role in informing decision-making and driving development in Ghana,” the Statistician said.

Director, Business, Trade and Industry Directorate, Dr. Owusu Kagya, gave a reflection and synopsis of key Guidance for IBES II Data Collection

According to him, data quality monitors will play a crucial role in validating data, tracking progress, and improving accuracy and completeness. “IT officers will be responsible for enforcing data security measures, ensuring proper encryption, and performing regular backups to safeguard the collected information,” he said.

“Teams are expected to meet daily targets, update progress dashboards regularly, and report any delays promptly,” he added.

The Director, thus, called on all officers to commit to excellence and deliver a survey that meets the highest standards of accuracy and professionalism, contributing valuable data for national development.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed 21 new cases of Mpox, raising the total number of infections across the country to 218 as of July 14, 2025.

In its latest update, the GHS stated that no new deaths have been recorded, with the cumulative death toll remaining at zero.

The GHS also noted that there are currently no active hospital admissions related to the disease.

Mpox is a viral disease spread mainly through direct physical contact with infected persons. It typically begins with flu-like symptoms such as fever and body aches, followed by a rash that may appear on the face, chest, hands, or genitals. Though most cases resolve without complications, doctors caution that children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems may face increased health risks.

The Ghana Health Service has indicated that it will continue its public education efforts and monitoring activities in partnership with regional health offices.

Members of the public are advised to rely on verified health information and to report suspected cases promptly, as health officials continue to manage the outbreak.

‘My mother took everything and left with dad’s best friend’

0

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’m a 25-year old woman who lives with my family. I live with my father and two siblings. My father was a very wealthy man. He had many properties and businesses he handled.

I’m the first child of my parents. Five years ago, my father told me he would let me take over the companies when I turn 25 because he’s getting old. Last year, an unfortunate thing happened.

My mother was sleeping with my father’s best friend and no one knew about it. My father’s best friend wasn’t as rich as my dad, so I’m wondering why my mother decided to do that to my dad.

She didn’t only cheat on my dad, she planned with the man to take everything my dad worked for. We woke up one day and my mother was nowhere to be found. Also, my dad’s monies were all gone and his properties taken as well.

My dad nearly went mad when he discovered that all his assets had been stolen by his wife and best friend.

He gave in to drinking alcohol and gambling. Things became tough for us. He could gamble with the last penny we have at home. He owed a lot of people because of the gambling.

We could barely feed and because of the frustration he’s going through, he didn’t really pay attention to us.

I had to go and look for job, so we could survive and God being so good, I got a job in a real estate company. I worked so hard so my siblings could be okay and happy. Honestly, what our mother did caused us pain. I was left to play the mother and father role.

Few months down the line, I saved some money and rented an apartment for us. Whenever I keep money at home for us to sort out certain things, our dad would take the money and gamble with it. He keeps losing too but I never gave up on him.

I tried my best to speak to him so he could stop. It took me months to help him become the man we knew him to be.

Just as we thought everything was going fine, our mother showed up in my house. I don’t even know how she found out we were staying there.

She came begging my dad and my siblings to forgive her. I was at work at that time when my little brother called that there’s an emergency at home.

I got home and to my surprise, there was my mother. I despise her; we are suffering because of her. I asked her to get out of my house but my mom knelt down begging us to hear her out.

She then told my dad that his best friend convinced her to take all his belongings for them to travel and be together elsewhere.

She said the man lied to her about loving her. I was just confused and didn’t believe what I was hearing. Despite the fact that she is my mother, I hate her and I don’t think I can stand her.

My dad doesn’t know what to do or say to her. Does she deserve forgiveness after everything she did?

3rd accused sacks Atta Akyea in open court – Report

Samuel Atta Akyea (L) was the lawyer of Adu Boahene (R), his wife and 3rd accused, Mildred Donkor Samuel Atta Akyea (L) was the lawyer of Adu Boahene (R), his wife and 3rd accused, Mildred Donkor

NEDCo embarks on revenue mobilisation to retrieve over GH¢300m in Bono Region

The exercise targets both residential and commercial consumers The exercise targets both residential and commercial consumers

Correspondence from Bono Region

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) in the Bono Region has begun a rigorous 12-day revenue mobilisation exercise aimed at recovering an amount of GH¢330 million of unpaid electricity bills from its customers.

The exercise, which targets both residential and commercial consumers, forms part of a broader effort by the company to improve its financial standing, ensure operational sustainability, and maintain a reliable power supply in the region.

The initiative involves disconnections of defaulting customers, on-site bill verification, and public sensitisation on the importance of prompt payment for electricity consumed.

During day one of the exercise in the Dormaa Central Municipality, NEDCo officials disconnected the power supply to the offices of the National Ambulance Service at the Dormaa Ahenkro Bus Terminal, the Ghana National Fire Service facilities at both the terminal and the central location, as well as multiple individual consumers for failing to settle their bills to a tune of GH¢20,337,140.

Ing Eugene Odoi Addo, the Sunyani Area Manager of NEDCo, emphasised the critical importance of the ongoing operation, describing it as a necessary step towards securing the long-term sustainability of the company since the continuous accumulation of unpaid electricity bills poses a serious threat to NEDCo’s ability to operate efficiently.

“We have realised that customers on their own do not want to pay their bills unless they are chased. Occasionally, we do this operation to beef up our collections so we can pay our debtors. In the Sunyani area, our report indicates that our customers owe a total of about GH¢330 million, and this includes governmental and non-governmental agencies.”

The revenue mobilisation exercise is expected to be conducted across all 12 administrative districts within the Bono Region, a comprehensive approach aimed at ensuring that no area is left out in the company’s quest to retrieve all outstanding debts.

Protect PTAs reinstatement with law – GNAT tells GES

0

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called for legal backing to safeguard the government’s decision to reinstate Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in schools.

This follows an official announcement by the Ghana Education Service (GES) confirming the full reinstatement of PTAs in all pre-tertiary schools across the country.

The directive, issued on Thursday, July 17, stems from President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to deepening stakeholder involvement in the education sector.

According to the GES, the move is aimed at fostering stronger collaboration among parents, teachers, and communities to improve the quality of education for Ghanaian learners.

All heads of public senior high, technical, and STEM schools have been instructed to immediately begin implementing the directive.

In an interview with Citi News on Thursday, July 17, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah welcomed the decision but stressed the need for legislation to prevent future governments from abolishing PTAs again.

“While we have restored the PTA, let us all agree that, as it was in the past, parents are the true owners of the schools. Now that we have returned the schools to them, no future government should come and reverse this decision.

“We must agree on the kind of governance framework we want to maintain to ensure our children are properly trained,” he said.

By Edward Acquah

Accra, July 18, GNA- Dr Clement Apaak, Deputy Minister of Education, has expressed delight over the quality of innovations by Junior High School (JHS) students at the 2025 Ghana Science and Tech Explorer Challenge Prize (GSTEP).

The Minister was particularly excited about the invention of gas leakage detectors by one of the teams that exhibited ingenuity at the GSTEP Exhibition and Awards in Accra.

Dr Apaak said such innovations could be deployed to the market immediately to save lives by reducing fires associated with gas leakage.

The GSTEP encourages and supports JHS students (11-16 years) and teachers to develop practical Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) skills and products that benefit local communities.

The competition, which covered Greater Accra, Ashanti said Eastern regions, received 1,500 applications from young innovators, out of which 50 made it to the finals.

Among the innovations were the use of solar to preserve food and dry crops, smart stick and other digital tools designed to ease movement of persons with disability, traffic management system, transformation of waste into power and generation of fertiliser and manure, and gas leakage detector.

The young innovators were tasked to identify problems in their communities and develop solutions to address them sustainably.

Dr Apaak expressed gratitude to the GSTEP for whipping up interest in STEM among students and supporting them to create real life solutions.

He said STEM education was not a luxury but a necessity and appealed to the organisers to extend the programme to the northern sector to discover and train more innovators.

The Technocrats_Innowear were crowned winners of the 2025 GSTEP competition.

TheTechnocrats_SafetySense Engineering won the Best Pitch while the ReadEase won the Most Innovative Idea award.

The Pacesetters won the Best in Applied Sciences and SCI-G emerged the First Runner-Up, followed by Eco-Fuel Agenda who clinched the Second Runner-Up position.

The Outstanding Personalities awards were presented to Queendela Norvisi Djorkoto (Most Outstanding YSG), Michael Mensah (Footprint), Foster Dushie (Most Outstanding Teacher), Frimpong Kwame Manso (Outstanding Business Mentor), and Daniel Etrue (Outstanding Technical Coach).

Dr. Munawaru Issahaque, Deputy Director General, Ghana Education Service, described the innovations as “amazing”, emphasising that STEM education was a critical tool to drive quality education.

“The creativity you have demonstrated shows that age is no barrier to making positive impact,” he said.

Madam Constance Agyemang, Founder of GSTEP, said she was humbled by the potential she saw in the young innovators who had demonstrated the desire to create solutions to address problems in their communities.

She encouraged them to be proud of themselves for their ingenuity and urged those who did not win awards not to be disappointed but endeavour to excel in their endeavours.

The Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana, has stressed the importance of fulfilling promises made to constituents during election campaigns.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, July 18, 2025, and monitored by GhanaWeb, Agbana said it is only right that politicians work towards delivering on their promise of development to constituents while they were seeking votes.

“So far as promises were made during campaigns to win elections, it is proper to work towards fulfilling them,” he said.

He further urged leaders not to shy away from development responsibilities, even if certain tasks are traditionally not seen as part of a parliamentarian’s role.

“Let’s stop telling them that MPs don’t construct roads, while we knew that before campaigning,” he added.

He urged politicians to move beyond excuses and focus on offering solutions to problems in their constituencies.

Agbana emphasised the need for a more committed approach to constituency development, stating that leaders must always prioritise the needs of their people.

Dzifa Gomashie, AMA praised for upgrading Kwame Nkrumah Park

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has been praised for her intervention in the repairs of some parts of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, which was in a state of disrepair earlier in the year.

It may be recalled that popular vlogger Goshers, in a video shared in May 2025, cited how the car park of the park had not been properly constructed, leading to the area being filled with potholes and muddy water.

Fast-forward to July, and the car park had been repaired, with the potholes being filled up and tarred.

The Executive Director of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Dr Collins Rawlings Nunyonameh, shared how, only a month into his tenure, he flagged the issue to local authorities.

“They could have fixed it permanently. But what they did was to cover it with chippings. As the cars returned, especially the large trucks and buses, they created small craters here and there and it got us into trouble with a lot of our visitors,” he recalled.

He credited the swift intervention of Gomashie, who was instrumental in pushing for the area to be fixed.

“I had to appeal to the AMA and she added her voice very strongly. In fact, she came here with the AMA mayor.

“The AMA freely give us their equipment, their workers, and we got this beautifully fixed,” Dr Nunyonameh said.

According to Dr Nunyonameh, the project marks the first phase of a broader initiative to elevate the Park into an “international‑class visitors’ place,”.

“The problem is not about having problems; the problem will be about our ability to respond,” he stressed.

He added that in the coming months, more visible improvements would materialise.

Located at the heart of Accra, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park pays tribute to Ghana’s founding father, celebrated as “the African man of the millennium.”

The park and the museum were set up to honour Nkrumah’s legacy and enhance the visitor experience.

He said his outfit is committed to sustaining this momentum, ensuring that the site is befitting of one of Africa’s most important national monuments.

“This is Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. This is about Kwame Nkrumah, the African man of the millennium. We need to keep his image and legacy up there, not trivialise it in any way,” he said.

Dr Johnson Asiama is the Governor of the Bank of Ghana Dr Johnson Asiama is the Governor of the Bank of Ghana

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, says the Emergency Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting held on July 17, 2025, will not result in any changes to the current policy rate.

Speaking at the ABSA-UPSA Quarterly Banking Roundtable in Accra, he explained that the session was primarily convened to assess current economic conditions ahead of the Committee’s scheduled meeting in the coming days.

“We will rather review some developments in the market ahead of the actual meeting in the next 10 days. Many people thought that we were going to make a policy statement, that will not happen,” he said.

The Bank of Ghana had earlier confirmed that the MPC would convene on Thursday, July 17, 2025, in response to recent economic developments.

The official policy decision is now expected to be announced on Friday, July 18, 2025.

There had been earlier speculation that the Central Bank might cut rates during the emergency session.

However, the Governor’s clarification confirms that no such decision will be made at this stage.‎
