Man Kills 69-Year-Old Landlord –

The house where the incident occurred

A man believed to be in his early 20s has been arrested by the police for allegedly murdering a 69-year-old landlord at Kansaworodo near Takoradi under some bizarre circumstances.

The alleged murderer, suspected to be mentally deranged, was alleged to have used scissors and a knife to kill the 69-year-old man, Francis Quarm, also called Gabo, in his room.

It was revealed that the suspect screamed ‘I need blood’ while using the two sharp implements to stab the landlord.

According to some tenants in the house, they rushed to the room of the deceased after they heard him shouting for help, early morning of July 16, 2025.

They indicated that they saw the suspect also licking the blood on the sharp objects allegedly used in committing the crime.

Paulina Quarm, a daughter of the deceased, told journalists that her father was asleep when the unfortunate incident occurred.

She disclosed that the suspect forcibly entered her father’s room and attacked him without any provocation.

She said, “My father is the landlord and stayed in a different room. One of the tenants started shouting early in the morning after detecting that the suspect had attacked my father with knife and scissors.”

She indicated that although many people rushed to the scene, they could not get inside the deceased’s room because the suspect was armed and looked very aggressive.

“Eventually, one brave young man gathered the courage, entered and overpowered him, but by then, my father had already been killed,” she told journalists.

The Assembly Member for the area, George Cobbinah, confirmed the incident and said the suspect is a resident of the area.

He disclosed that the suspected mentally deranged man had recently been exhibiting disturbing behaviour believed to be linked to drug abuse.

“Just the day before the incident, he attacked his own mother, leaving her with serious injuries, and she is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

“We tried capturing him but he disappeared until we received the devastating news of Mr. Quarm’s death,” Mr. Cobbinah recounted.

“The suspect was heard screaming that he needed more blood when he attacked the old man around midnight on that day.

“The victim, being elderly, could not defend himself,” he indicated.

The Assembly Member confirmed that the police have since arrested the suspect, and the victim’s lifeless body has been deposited at the Effia Nkwanta Hospital morgue in Sekondi.

Police Hospital plans mass burial for 300 unclaimed bodies

0

The management of the Police Hospital in Accra has announced plans to conduct a mass burial for 300 unidentified and unclaimed bodies currently held at its mortuary. The solemn exercise is scheduled for August 11, 2025.

According to an official statement issued on July 19 by the hospital’s Public Affairs Officer, Chief Inspector Faustina Afia Nunekpeku, the bodies include

paupers, unknown former patients, abandoned corpses, and victims of accidents and crimes.

The hospital emphasised that the burial will take place 21 days after public notification, in line with public health protocols and respect for the dignity of the deceased.

“This solemn task is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure that the deceased are laid to rest with dignity in line with public health guidelines,” the statement said.

The occurrence of such unclaimed remains, the hospital noted, serves as a stark reminder of the importance of personal identification and the need for increased vigilance in everyday life.

“We urge all individuals to carry valid national identification at all times, regardless of age or location. It is crucial in aiding authorities during emergencies and preventing individuals from being classified as unknown,” the statement added.

The Police Hospital also encouraged the public to share emergency contact information with trusted family members or friends and to keep such details in accessible places, especially for those living alone.

“Being proactive in sharing emergency contacts can make a critical difference in case of a medical emergency or unforeseen situation,” the statement advised.

Citizens were further urged to stay updated on local safety laws and health guidelines, especially in remote or less-patrolled areas where emergency services may be delayed.

The statement concluded with a call for families to keep close tabs on the whereabouts of loved ones, particularly vulnerable groups like the elderly, minors, and individuals with mental health conditions, who may be more prone to going missing.

Young Innovators Dazzle At GSTEP 2025 Final

Team Technocrafts Innowear, 2025 GSTEP winners

YOUNG INNOVATORS from basic schools across the country converged at the National Theatre on July 16 and 17, 2025 with a display of dazzling and inspiring real-life innovations at the 2025 Ghana Science and Tech Explorer Challenge Prize (GSTEP) final.

The event which saw 50 finalist teams from various basic schools was a display of what lies in store for Ghana’s future as the nation embraces science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education to bridge disparities in the education sector.

This year’s GSTEP Exhibition and Awards Ceremony provided the platform to celebrate young innovators who are using STEM to bring about positive change in their communities.

Officials of both the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ghana Education Service who attended the exhibition and award ceremony have endorsed its ingenuity and pledged their commitment to empower the future generations through STEM.

At the end of this year’s final, Team Technocrafts Innowear from Services Primary and JHS (Greater Accra Region), emerged overall winners.

They developed an innovation inspired by a real-life kidnapping incident involving a team member.

Team SCI-G – (Eastern Region) finished second while Team Eco-Fuel Agenda – (Ashanti Region) came third.

Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak in a keynote address indicated that the GSTEP highlights the power of opportunity, of what becomes possible when we challenge young minds to think critically, work collaboratively, and build boldly.

“I have seen firsthand how practical STEM education can unlock potential and reshape our nation’s future. It is initiatives like GSTEP that give us hope that the future we imagine is within reach,” he said.

Dr. Apaak reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for the GSTEP Challenge and similar initiatives that empower youth, reduce inequality, and bring education to life.

“Together, we will ensure that every Ghanaian child—no matter their location—has the chance to dream, to build, and to lead,” he added.

The Deputy Director General for Quality and Access at the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr. Issahaque Munawaru said the GSTEP model aligns strongly with the goals of GES; embed practical, skills-based STEM learning across all schools.

He said it also bridges regional and socio-economic disparities in education access, and strengthens teacher capacity to lead innovation and guide learners effectively.

He assured that GES will work with GSTEP to promote STEM at the JHS level, scale up the project, leveraging GES infrastructure nationwide to address disparities, and work collaboratively with them to ensure sustainability through continuous teacher training.

The Founder of the GSTEP Challenge, Constance Agyeman, praised the finalists for the creativity and innovation they exhibited.

She said this year’s inventions underscore the impact of practical, inclusive, and community-focused STEM education and urged GES and MoE to lend further support to the initiative.

NADeF urges businesses, entrepreneurs to repay loans for more credit facilities

0

By Christopher Tetteh

Susuanso, (Ahafo), July 21, GNA – Professor Yaw Ofosu-Kusi, the Board Chair for Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF) has urged small-scale businesses, entrepreneurs and petty traders within its operational area, to improve their loan repayments, for enhanced benefits under the foundation’s micro-credit scheme.

The NADeF, which was established in 2008, is a mechanism to respectively manage the Newmont Ghana Gold Limited’s Ahafo South Mine and Ahafo North project’s sustainable community development, commitment to its 10 host communities in the Region.

The communities comprised Kenyasi Number One and Two, Ntotroso, Wamahinso and Gyedu in the Asutifi North District, as well as Yamfo, Susuanso, Afrisipakrom, Terchire, and Adrobaa in the Tano North Municipality of the region.

Prof. Ofosu-Kusi said the foundation’s credit scheme was always ready and remained committed to supporting businesses and entrepreneurs in the area to grow, however with good repayment records, beneficiaries could easily access more facilities to expand their businesses.

“The foundation is committed to help spur local business growth and development to improve the socio-economic livelihoods of the people, however, that will largely depend on their commitment to pay back the loans and their financial performance in the previous cycles”.

Prof. Ofosu-Kusi gave the advice in an interview with the media on the side-lines of an inspection visit the Board undertook, to assess the level of work on the construction of some development projects in the enclave being funded by the NADeF.

The Board Chair also led other members of the NADeF Board to visit shops and stores for closer interaction with some beneficiaries of the micro-credit scheme, and further, to assess and identify some of the challenges confronting their businesses.

Prof. Ofosu-Kusi advised the beneficiaries to use the credit facilities judiciously and only to expand their economic activities, saying it would enable them to become financially independent and better their lots.

The Board inspected the progress of work on the construction of the Adrobaa Chief Palace, renovation of a six-unit classroom block at the Techire Roman Catholic (RC) Basic School, the health center project at Techire and the construction of the Susuaso town roads and drainage system.

Prof. Ofosu-Kusi explained that the objectives of the visits were to ensure that the contractors delivered quality work and said the board was highly impressed about the work done and commended the contractor for the quality work delivery.

Mr Kwasi Adu, the Headmaster of the RC JHS commended NADeF for the renovation work, saying that it would facilitate effective teaching and learning.

Some of the beneficiaries of the NADeF micro-credit scheme expressed appreciation for the facility and called on the foundation to consider increasing the funds given to them for enhanced business outcomes.

We are not calling anyone a criminal, but Ghanaians are angry over National Cathedral cash – Shamima Muslim

0

Shamima Muslim is a Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim is a Deputy Presidential Spokesperson

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim, has said the growing public anger over the National Cathedral expenditure is understandable, given the significant amount of money already sunk into the project with little to show for it.

Speaking on GTV’s Current Agenda programme on Friday, July 19, she noted that while no one has been declared guilty of any wrongdoing, the figures emerging from the audit process have deepened public frustrations and demand for accountability.

“Nobody is saying anybody is guilty of any crime until the investigation will prove, but everybody is concerned about the amount of money that has gone into this project,” she stated.

She disclosed that initial reports suggested that only $58 million had been spent so far, but new details emerging from an audit indicate an additional $39 million is owed to contractors, bringing the total financial exposure to nearly $97 million.

She explained that President John Dramani Mahama had previously referenced an audit by Deloitte and Touche during a national address and assured the public that further actions would be taken once the findings are fully reviewed.

“Amounts including monies from the public purse have gone into what many consider a private promise to God by a president. As a nation, we must be aligned in finding where there was wrongdoing,” she said.

Shamima Muslim emphasised that the key question now is to determine the total cost of the project and ensure accountability for every amount spent.

President John Dramani Mahama has issued key directives to restore transparency and accountability by calling for the dissolution of both the National Cathedral Secretariat and its Board of Trustees.

Additionally, he has instructed that the audit report on the project be published and a forensic audit conducted.

Negative online image hurting Ghanaian artistes on global stage

0

Soraya Opare-Riley is Ghanaian event planner Soraya Opare-Riley is Ghanaian event planner

Event organizer, Soraya Opare-Riley, has stated that one of the major reasons many Ghanaian artistes struggle to break through the international market is because of negative online reputation.

Sharing her thoughts on the matter on GhanaWeb X Space on July 19, 2025, Soraya explained that even when international record labels are interested in a Ghanaian artiste’s music and talent, the negative information written about them online often becomes a major turn-off.

She said that in the music business, first impressions matter, and when foreign music executives search for an artiste online, they expect to see professional achievements, exciting content, and signs of growth. But in the case of many Ghanaian acts, that’s not what shows up.

She explained that this issue makes foreign record labels hesitant to work with Ghanaian artistes because the online negativity creates a bad impression, especially for acts who are still trying to build their name beyond Ghana.

“One of the biggest problems that has impeded a lot of Ghanaian acts when it comes to the international market is their global footprint. When you go to a record label and the record label’s A&R likes your song, likes your talent but when they google you and all they see is negative news. So, they think to themselves, this person is not even positive in their home country. Why would outsiders buy them?” Soraya stated.

GH¢49m NSB Case: ‘I will not force myself on a client’

Samuel Atta Akyea (L) was the lawyer of Adu Boahene (R), his wife and 3rd accused, Mildred Donkor Samuel Atta Akyea (L) was the lawyer of Adu Boahene (R), his wife and 3rd accused, Mildred Donkor

Samuel Atta Akyea, legal counsel for the accused in the high-profile GH¢49 million National Security trial, has addressed his dismissal by the third accused, Mildred Donkor.

The trial involves Kwabena Adu Boahene, the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), among other defendants.

Speaking to the media after court proceedings on July 18, 2025, Atta Akyea, while touting his credentials, stated that he was not going to force himself on any client.

He refuted the assertion that Mildred Donkor’s decision to fire him had something to do with the way he was handling the case.

“I wasn’t so surprised. Thirty-two years down the line, I will not force myself on a client. I didn’t know what was going through her mind. I wasn’t surprised at all.

“The case has not started. We have not done anything. It is the same Atta Akyea who secured the bail for her. So, it was a bit surprising that she said that, but it was not like a shock at all,” he said.

Mildred Donkor fired the former Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, from representing her in the case.

According to a report by GHOne, Donkor, who, together with Adu Boahene and two other accused, has been slapped with 11 charges over the alleged transfer of GH¢49 million (approximately $7 million) from the bureau’s account to the former NSB chief’s personal account, said Atta Akyea, who was the lawyer for all the accused persons, should no longer represent her.

“I wish to take a separate lawyer!” the third accused is quoted to have said.

The Office of the Attorney General filed 11 corruption-related charges against Adu Boahene and three other accused persons: the wife of Adu Boahene, Angela Adjei-Boateng; his company, Advantage Solutions Limited; and a banker, Mildred Donkor.

Mildred Donkor is a former UMB Bank relationship officer for the couple and their company, BNC.

Court filings show she also served as a director for Advantage Solutions Limited, which was allegedly used as a holding company to launder the stolen funds.

“The monies which A1 and A2 moved from the National BNC bank account into the Private BNC’s bank account were paid through a complex web of companies, ultimately owned by A4 (Advantage Solutions),” the AG’s court filing states.

Investigations further revealed that the stolen funds were used to acquire properties in Accra, Kumasi, and London, luxury vehicles, and to fund the couple’s lavish lifestyle.

Despite her denials, Donkor was found to be a director in all companies used in the scheme and actively participated in the day-to-day operations.

Mildred Donkor was charged with several counts of conspiracy to commit money laundering and money laundering.

Kenya U-turn over charging prominent activist with terror offences

0

Boniface Mwangi is a well-known activist and has been involved in many protests Boniface Mwangi is a well-known activist and has been involved in many protests

Prominent Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi has been charged with illegal possession of ammunition linked to protests last month in which at least 19 people were killed.

He denied the charge and has been released on bail.

He was not charged with “facilitation of terrorist acts”, as the police had earlier said.

On Sunday, investigators said they had seized phones, a laptop, and notebooks from his Lukenya home on the outskirts of the capital, Nairobi, and hard drives, computers, tear gas canisters, and a blank firearm round from his office in the city.

His arrest – and especially the suggestion that he would face terrorism charges – sparked a wave of condemnation, with human rights groups denouncing it as aimed at suppressing opposition voices. The activist denied the accusations against him, saying in a post on X: “I am not a terrorist.”

The alleged offences are linked to the 25 June protests when, according to the state-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), 19 people died when demonstrators clashed with police. Hundreds were also injured, and property and businesses were damaged.

Most of those killed died from gunshot wounds, with human rights groups blaming police brutality.

However, Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen described the demonstration as “terrorism disguised as dissent” and an “unconstitutional attempt” to change the government. He said that several police stations had been attacked, with many officers injured and vehicles set on fire.

At least 38 more people were killed in subsequent protests earlier this month, the KNCHR says.

Since June last year, more than 100 people have been killed in successive waves of anti-government protests, with police accused of using excessive force to quell each one, leading to further demonstrations.

President William Ruto urged the police to shoot violent protesters in the leg, rather than killing them.

On Sunday, a coalition of 37 rights organisations condemned Mr Mwangi’s arrest on “unjustified terrorism allegations”, describing it as the “latest escalation in a systematic crackdown that has seen hundreds of young Kenyans detained on fabricated terrorism charges”.

“What began as targeted persecution of young protesters demanding accountability has metastasized into a full-scale assault on Kenya’s democracy,” they said in a joint statement.

James Orengo, a veteran politician and governor of Siaya county, said it was “ridiculous to charge Boniface Mwangi and our children who have demonstrated a high level of political consciousness with terrorism”.

Mr Mwangi has been detained multiple times in the past, and has been at the centre of many protests.

In May, he and a Ugandan activist Agather Atuhaire were detained in Tanzania, where they had travelled to attend the trial of Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who is accused of treason.

Following their release several days later, both said they had been abducted, tortured and sexually assaulted. They have since filed a case at the regional East African Court of Justice over the matter.

Betting company settles lawsuit after gambler’s wife sued for $1 million loss

The gambler's wife claimed her husband stole money from family accounts to stake bet The gambler’s wife claimed her husband stole money from family accounts to stake bet

DraftKings, a top US sports betting platform, has reached a confidential settlement in a lawsuit brought by Lisa D’Alessandro on July 20, 2025.

Her husband, a compulsive gambler, lost almost $1million on the site over a period of four years.

Lisa claimed her husband stole money from family accounts, including their kids’ savings, to fund his gambling lifestyle without her notice.

The case, which got national attention in the US, claimed DraftKings enabled and encouraged problem gambling.

This was allegedly done by offering VIP treatment and incentives to the bettor, known in court only by his username, Mdallo1990.

According to court filings, the man placed over 14,000 sports bets between 2020 and 2024, incurring losses totalling nearly $950,000.

The lawsuit argued that DraftKings should’ve intervened sooner.

It pointed to the man’s betting patterns rapidly escalating from under $25,000 in deposits in 2020 to $777,000 in 2023.

“That should have set alarm bells ringing,” the lawsuit stated.

DraftKings had previously attempted to dismiss the case, arguing that it had not encouraged the man to steal funds and that the lawsuit was not filed by a registered customer.

However, the court allowed the matter to proceed, leading to a negotiated resolution. The terms of the settlement remain undisclosed.

DraftKings denied wrongdoing but acknowledged Mdallo1990 was a VIP.

He received perks like free bets, electronics, travel offers, and branded merchandise benefits critics say may have made his addiction worse.

In response to mounting scrutiny, DraftKings has rolled out new responsible gambling features, including the “My Budget Builder”, a tool that allows users to set personalised spending limits and receive warning alerts.

Still, the D’Alessandro case underscores growing concerns about the human cost of digital sports betting, particularly when problem gamblers fall through the cracks of corporate safeguards.

Ghanaians Drag Delay Over Her Hairstyle At EMY Africa Soiree In London, Say It’s Too Local

0

Renowned Ghanaian media figure and entrepreneur Deloris Frimpong Manso, widely recognized by her stage name Delay, turned heads at the prestigious inaugural EMY Africa Soiree in London.

The high-profile event took place at the luxurious Waldorf Hilton Hotel on Sunday, July 20, 2025, drawing a host of influential figures and celebrities from across Africa and the diaspora.

Delay made a striking entrance at the soirée, dressed in an elegant, sleeveless white pantsuit that hugged her figure and showcased her sophisticated fashion taste.

Her poised appearance quickly drew attention online, where fans and fashion critics alike took to social media to weigh in on her outfit and overall look.

While many praised her stylish outfit and commanding presence, not all feedback was glowing. One Instagram user, identified as Tony Richly, expressed disappointment with her hairstyle. He argued that the micro-braided ponytail Delay wore lacked the sophistication expected at such a glamorous, high-profile event.

According to him, her hairstyle appeared “too local” and failed to complement the bold fashion statement made by her sleek outfit.

Following the video she posted from the event, others chimed in with varied opinions not only about her hair but also about the nature of her attire.

Some critics questioned the decision to reveal so much skin, particularly at an event centered around executive-level discourse and professional networking in the entertainment industry.

Despite the mixed reactions, Delay’s presence at the EMY Africa Soiree has undoubtedly kept her at the center of public conversation, sparking discussions about fashion choices, cultural representation, and expectations for public figures at international events.

Gloria Sarfo Slams Ghana Film Industry Over Hypocrisy

0

Gloria Sarfo

Actress Gloria Sarfo has responded to criticism over her recent comments about the state of Ghana’s film industry, calling out what she describes as “hypocrisy” from industry players and the public.

Last week, Gloria posted on Instagram saying many Ghanaian actors are wasting their talent due to a lack of opportunities. She compared Ghana’s film industry to Nigeria’s, saying Nollywood is more active and supportive.

“Honestly, if you’re in Nigeria as an actor, you’d realise that you’ve REALLY WASTED YOUR TALENT back in Ghana,” she said.

Her post upset some people, including fellow actors and media commentators, who accused her of being unpatriotic and seeking attention.

Others discussed it on TV and radio, criticising her openly.

In a new Instagram post, Gloria defended herself, saying she never meant to disrespect Ghana or boast about working in Nigeria.

“God knows I didn’t post that for clout chasing! I had good intentions,” she said. “Even the young ones I was fighting for disrespected me. And pundits insulted me on national radio and TV.”

She went on to highlight the problems in the industry, sarcastically saying that people like to pretend everything is fine:

“Let’s all pretend everything is perfect publicly and cry privately… Yes, our industry is perfect—no talent wasted, producers pay well, and actors are the happiest in the world!”

Gloria ended by saying she may step back from speaking out and focus on her personal brand instead.

Her comments have started new conversations about the real struggles in Ghana’s film industry. While some criticised her approach, others praised her for being honest about issues many people avoid talking about.

Illegal Mining Popularly Known As Galamsey In Ghana
Illegal Mining

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has accused high-ranking members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of forcibly seizing a Ghanaian small-scale mining concession in Prestea-Huni Valley and transferring it to Chinese operators.

MFWA Executive Director Sulemana Braimah revealed the alleged misconduct in a social media post, stating: “Chinese are busily working at a small-scale mine forcefully taken from local Ghanaian miners by powerful NDC politicians. They will be exposed soon!” The claim comes amid growing scrutiny of illegal mining activities undermining President John Mahama’s anti-galamsey efforts.

This development follows Attorney General’s recent directive to the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister Joseph Yamin and NDC’s Abanga for suspected illegal mining involvement. The probe also includes reviewing Professor Frimpong Manso’s report on past administration’s galamsey activities.

The allegations present a credibility challenge for the Mahama government, which has implemented multiple measures to combat illegal mining. Critics argue such actions by party officials contradict the administration’s public stance on protecting Ghana’s natural resources.

Ghanaian travellers to pay more as U.S. introduces $250 Visa Integrity Fee

0

Ghanaians and other travellers planning to travel to the United States on non-immigrant visas will soon have to pay an additional $250 as part of a new policy introduced under former President Donald Trump’s administration.

The new charge—referred to as the “visa integrity fee”—is part of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”, which was signed into law on 4th July 2025 and takes effect during the U.S. government’s 2025 fiscal year (from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025).

A report by Independent.co.uk stated that the fee will apply to all non-immigrant visa holders, including tourists, students, and temporary workers from Ghana and other countries that do not qualify for the U.S. Visa Waiver Programme.

It does not affect those travelling with an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization), which is mostly limited to citizens of countries like the UK, Australia, Japan, and Singapore.

In addition to existing visa processing costs, the U.S. has also increased the Form I-94 fee to $24, further raising the financial burden on travellers.

Non-Refundable — Unless You Follow All the Rules

Under Section 10007 of the new law, the visa integrity fee:

  • Cannot be waived or reduced under any circumstances.

  • May be refunded, but only if the visa holder strictly follows U.S. immigration laws—such as leaving the country no later than five days after their visa expires, or obtaining lawful permanent residency during their stay.

  • Violations, such as working without authorisation, will lead to forfeiture of the fee.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says systems are not yet in place to begin collecting the fee, but it will be enforced during the fiscal year.

In a statement, a department spokesperson said: “The visa integrity fee requires cross-agency coordination before implementation,” adding that the broader bill aims to “restore integrity to the U.S. immigration system.”

The fee is expected to be reviewed and adjusted annually based on inflation.

Who Is Exempt?

Travellers from over 40 visa-waiver countries, including the UK, Germany, and Japan, will not be required to pay the $250 fee for short stays under 90 days. However, the cost of applying for an ESTA (electronic travel authorisation) will nearly double—from $21 to $40.

A recent U.S. government report shows that nearly 11 million non-immigrant visas were issued in 2024 alone, many of them to Africans, Asians, and Latin Americans.

What This Means for Ghanaians

For Ghanaian students, tourists, or workers heading to the U.S., this new charge significantly raises the cost of travel and documentation—adding to already high application fees, medical exams, and travel expenses.

The Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is yet to comment on the development or its potential impact on visa processing at the U.S. Embassy in Accra.

Mercy Johnson Calls Out Ghana TV Station

Mercy Johnson

Popular Nollywood actress and filmmaker Mercy Johnson has accused Ghanaian TV station Blazing TV of airing her movie The Firstborn without her consent.

In an Instagram post on July 19, 2025 Mercy shared a screenshot from a fan who informed her that the film was being shown on the station. Shocked by the discovery, she questioned how the station could broadcast her work without proper authorisation.

“How is this even okay? Blazing TV in Ghana is airing my movie The Firstborn without my consent. How does this even make sense? How? I am speechless at the audacity of it all,” she wrote.

Mercy Johnson now joins a growing list of Nigerian filmmakers raising concerns about copyright violations by some Ghanaian TV stations.

Earlier this year, actress Bimbo Ademoye also accused Ghanaian channels of airing her films without approval. She called on government officials, including the Minister of Communications, Sam George, and National Film Authority CEO, Kafui Danku, to take action.

In April, filmmaker Omoni Oboli similarly criticised Ghanaian broadcasters for showing her movies without permission, calling for respect for intellectual property rights.

NPP should’ve apologised, not boasted at Delegates Conference – Afadjato MP

0

Member of Parliament for Afadjato, Frank Afriyie, has taken a swipe at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership for what he describes as a tone-deaf and arrogant posture during the party’s National Delegates Conference.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, July 21, he stated that the NPP missed a critical opportunity to express remorse for the economic hardship and failed promises that led to its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

“The glorious opportunity that the NPP had after their abysmal performance in 2024 was what they had at the conference. What I expected them to do was to apologise to Ghanaians and say that they are extremely sorry,” Afriyie noted.

He condemned the party’s defiant rhetoric at the event, describing it as dismissive of the genuine frustrations Ghanaians continue to face. “But when you come and say that we are not broken, we are fighters, and we have never been defeated, it is somehow. If you want to build, build on the notice of trust.”

Afriyie expressed particular concern over the NPP’s decision to project a message of resilience without admitting to its governance failures, including what he termed “faulty policy that never materialised” and “the imposed hardship” on the population.

“But when you come on such a big platform and tell Ghanaians that when you come, you will do worse, I see that as problematic,” he stressed.

His remarks come after the MP for Nhyiaeso, Stephen Amoah and the General Secretary of the NPP claimed that Ghanaians had regretted voting for the NDC just six months after the 2024 elections.

The Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s in a speech also urged party members to rally behind a renewed sense of purpose, discipline, and unity.

Afenyo-Markin insisted the NPP is not a broken party and accused the ruling NDC government of worsening the economic situation since taking office.

UNICEF trains 30 investigators on safety of children online

0

Thirty investigators from the Criminal Investigations Department and the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana Police from the Western and Central Regions have been educated on the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (1038) to promote the safety of children online.

The two-day training of the investigators on Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse took the participants through the laws governing the subject under consideration and how the officers could use the laws to defend, protect and ensure safety of children who might be abused.

ACP Yakubu Akologo Ayamga, the Western Regional Deputy Police Commander praised UNICEF for sponsoring the training of the officers.

He encouraged them to consult the legal department of the service to effectively address the growing menace of online child sexual exploitation.

ACP Ayamga added that the investment by UNICEF underscored the seriousness of the subject matter and the need for communities and the securities to act quickly to safe children from this emerging exploitation and abuse.

He urged the officers to work hard in detecting, investigating to protect children and communities adding, “we also need to share best practices in protecting the dignity of children”.

She also promised that there would be positive outcomes from the training.

ASP Eunice Atinya, the Western Regional Director of DOVVSU, who was a participant, was grateful to UNICEF for the training.

She said: “We formerly did not know which acts to use in prosecuting offenders which sometimes resulted in less punishment or sentencing, but now through this education we are assured of better outcomes for victims.”

She described the course as very intensive and pleaded for more days for subsequent courses.

Madam Hilda Mensah, Child Protection Specialist with UNICEF noted how the Internet space was becoming a huge threat to the safety of children.

“Records show that some of these sexual exploitations sometimes come with extreme abuses, lowering down on human dignity,” she added.

The Child Protection Specialist added that perpetrators despite extorting monies from victims also left them with serious emotional scars of betrayal with many committing suicides.

Madam Mensah said: “Ghana was recording high figures of child sexual exploitation and abuse particularly on the Internet and entreated parents to be protective of their children.

“As a child, be wary of any person who asks you to take nude pictures or even invite secretly without your parents’ consent for such amorous reasons,” she added.

Songs that depend on dance challenges don’t last

Tinny is a Ghanaian musician Tinny is a Ghanaian musician

Veteran Ghanaian rapper, Nii Addo Quaynor, popularly referred to as Tinny has stated that songs that rely on dance challenges to go viral do not last in the music scene.

In an interview with Okay FM, Tinny said most songs today are made specifically for social media, with many of them depending on dance trends to go viral.

According to him, those types of songs usually fade away once the excitement around the dance dies down.

“Songs from this era that come with a dance challenge often are the ones that do not last long. Once the dance trend fades, the song fades away as well,” Tinny said.

He compared recent creations to songs from earlier years, which he believes have a longer lifespan and still sound fresh even after many years.

Tinny also noted that he does not believe in relying on dancers or viral trends to push his music.

He explained that his creative process is centered on making music for his fans and not just for online attention.

“I don’t see myself being in the studio to record a song and then looking for a dancer to promote it for me. I create music for my fans, and I won’t make a song just to hand it over to a dancer to get numbers. I don’t trust that approach,” he added.

Salam Mustapha dismisses claims of ‘favour-seeking’ donations by flagbearer hopefuls

Salam Mustapha is the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Salam Mustapha is the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has vehemently rejected claims that flagbearer hopefuls contributed to the party’s recent super delegates’ conference held on Saturday July, 19, 2025, in an attempt to curry favour with electorates.

Speaking on Channel One TV on July 20, 2025, Mustapha clarified that the donations were voluntary and made in solidarity with the party, noting the substantial costs involved in organising such a large-scale event.

“To bring over 5,000 people together, their accommodation, transport, it’s expensive. We are grateful to them for helping in these hard times,” Mustapha stated, emphasising the financial demands of the congress.

He explained that several prominent figures within the party, including former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Kennedy Agyapong, Frema Osei-Opare, and other former appointees and supporters, made significant contributions to support the event.

Mustapha asserted that these contributions were made purely in support of the party, not as a way to influence or gain favour in the ongoing flagbearership race.

He also made it clear that these donations would in no way serve as lobbying tools to become the preferred candidate for the party’s presidential slot.

He expressed satisfaction with the way members of the party had stepped up to support its rebuilding efforts.

“We are happy that members stood up for the party when it became necessary to support the party in its bid to rebuild,” Mustapha concluded, reiterating the spirit of unity and collective effort within the NPP.

The investment price of the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) gold coins continues to decline, a development attributed to the Ghana cedi’s appreciation against the US dollar.

The Central Bank introduced these gold coins as a strategic measure to discourage the hoarding of US dollars and absorb excess liquidity in the market, ultimately aiming to strengthen the cedi against major foreign currencies.

As of Monday, July 21, 2025, the BoG reported the following updated prices for its gold coins:

• The 0.25 oz coin is now selling at GH¢9,685.87, up from GH¢9,585.96 on July 18, 2025.

Ghanaians were filled with joy following the Black Queens’ qualification to the semi-final of the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The queens stood the ground as the Algerians’ defensive resilience came into play and avoided conceding.

Despite dominating the game throughout, they could not find the back of the net after extra time.

Ghana had an excellent penalty shoot-out, winning 4-2 to progress to the semi-final in a thrilling fashion.

They will face host nation Morocco in the semi-final stage on July 22, 2025.

The qualification triggered celebrations from scores of Ghanaians on social media as they hailed them for advancing to the semi-final stage for the first time since 2016.

Some attributed the feat to the exploits of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government under President John Dramani Mahama’s watch, saying ‘Aban papa aba’, meaning a good government has come.

Other football fans noted that with the team’s performance improving with each game, the Black Queens will go all the way to the final and clinch the trophy.

Some fans commended Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku and Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams for their support as well.

The Black Queens will face a tough test as they come up against the host nation, who have been impressive in the tournament.

NPP Unites To Rebuild After Successful Confab

0

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the weekend held a pivotal National Delegates Conference at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, signalling a renewed sense of unity, reform, and purpose following its 2024 electoral defeat.

The well-attended conference brought together over 5,000 delegates, including national, regional, and constituency executives, Members of Parliament, polling station officers, TESCON representatives, and grassroots supporters, all rallying under the theme “Rebuilding Together with Our Values.”

With a strong focus on inclusivity and democratic renewal, the delegates approved 54 out of 56 proposed constitutional amendments, marking a major overhaul of the party’s internal structures and electoral processes. These reforms, party leaders said, are aimed at deepening grassroots participation and strengthening the NPP’s capacity to reconnect with the Ghanaian electorate ahead of the 2028 general election.

General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong set the tone for the conference with a stirring speech that called on party faithful to rise above the disappointment of 2024 and embrace a collective vision for renewal.

“This is not just a conference,” he said. “This is a moment of reckoning. A moment of reflection. And above all, a moment of rising.”

Acknowledging the sting of defeat, Mr. Kodua stressed that the party’s spirit remained unbroken. “Yes, the 2024 elections were a blow. But that light has not gone out. It is still burning… and with this conference, with our collective faith and renewed strength, we shall fan that flame into a fire.”

He urged party members to embrace unity, discipline, and principle, reminding them, “We are not broken. We are not defeated. We are builders. We are dreamers. We are fighters. And when we come together, nothing is impossible.”

The party’s foundational values of freedom, enterprise, development, and responsibility, he noted, must guide every action and interaction going forward. “The journey ahead is not a sprint. It is a long and difficult road. But it is a road worth walking. And we will walk it together – shoulder to shoulder, heart to heart.”

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, echoed this call, urging the party to rebuild not only its electoral machinery but also its moral centre.

Quoting former President John Agyekum Kufuor, he said: “It is better to be a cleaner in a party in power than the general secretary of a party in opposition.” He added, “These words echo with urgency today… Ghana is now paying the price for trusting the NDC’s hollow promises.”

Mr. Afenyo-Markin described the 2024 loss as a wake-up call, exposing internal rifts and a disconnect from the electorate. “We have not lost our way because we forgot our policies. We have lost our way because we abandoned our principles,” he warned, urging members to return to the core values of service, discipline, truth, and integrity.

One of the most notable outcomes of the conference was the adoption of Motion 45, a constitutional amendment granting voting rights to former constituency and regional executives in the party’s presidential and parliamentary primaries. This move, aimed at fostering inclusion and rewarding long-standing service, modifies Articles 12 and 13 of the party’s constitution.

Chairman of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Frank Davies, who presented the motions, said the amendments were in line with the party’s vision to “expand the electoral college for the Presidential Primaries to promote broader participation.”

Delegates also adopted Motion 6, which increases polling station executives from five to seven, incorporating new roles such as Electoral Affairs Officer and Communications Officer, a 40% expansion that aims to reinforce the party’s grassroots structures.

The Committee additionally recommended a future transition to a One-Man-One-Vote (OMOV) electoral system. Until then, the limited expansion approved is expected to significantly broaden the party’s internal voting base.

Motion 50 was another major reform, amending Article 13(11) to allow 30 National Patrons and all members of the National Council of Elders to vote in presidential primaries, a nod to the critical advisory roles these senior party figures play.

Not all motions passed. Delegates rejected Motion 17, which sought to transfer supervision of polling station and electoral area elections to regional executives, as well as Motion 54, which proposed defining ‘Youth’ in the constitution as anyone under the age of 35, in line with international and national standards.

Two additional provisions – Motion 46 and a new Article 12 clause – were also adopted. These require national officers, ministers, deputy ministers, CEOs, and government appointees seeking to contest parliamentary primaries in constituencies with sitting MPs to resign at least 12 months before national elections. Similarly, presidential aspirants must resign 24 months ahead of general elections. The goal is to ensure a level playing field and uphold fairness.

Former ministers, national patrons, and other dignitaries were present, lending their support to what many described as a defining moment in the party’s rebuilding process.

As the conference ended, the message from the leadership was clear: the NPP is not broken, but reawakening. The party aims to transform its defeat into determination and re-emerge as a united force ready to lead Ghana into a new era of hope and opportunity.

UTAG threatens industrial action over ‘Mahama’s inaction’ on galamsey

0

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has issued a stern call to President John Dramani Mahama to fulfil his pre-election pledge to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, warning that failure to act decisively could trigger industrial action.

In a statement released after an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC) on Thursday, July 17, UTAG expressed deep concern over the government’s lack of tangible progress in the fight against galamsey, despite some modest gains by the security agencies.

The association recalled that in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections, President Mahama signed the National Pledge Against Illegal and Irresponsible Mining, witnessed by UTAG and the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG). The pledge, UTAG insists, constituted a solemn social contract with the Ghanaian people—a contract the President is yet to honour meaningfully.

Among the key unfulfilled promises UTAG highlighted are:

  • The immediate public denunciation of galamsey and its environmental harms;

  • A directive for all illegal mining activities to cease, including the evacuation of forest reserves and river bodies;

  • Empowering law enforcement agencies to act without fear or favour, regardless of political affiliation;

  • Implementation of coherent, practical anti-galamsey policies;

  • And the dismissal of local government officials who permit or protect illegal mining in their jurisdictions.

The statement points to continuing environmental destruction, particularly in the Ashanti, Eastern, Western, and Ahafo regions, as evidence of the administration’s failure to translate promises into real change.

While UTAG acknowledged instructions from the Attorney General for EOCO to investigate alleged political actors involved in illegal mining, it maintained that “more significant and coordinated action is needed to eradicate the galamsey menace in the country permanently.”

UTAG further urged the President to honour additional campaign commitments, including the repeal of Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462 and the declaration of a state of emergency in galamsey-affected areas.

“UTAG expects the President to fulfil his pledges with urgency and transparency. If concrete steps are not taken promptly, UTAG will not hesitate to activate all constitutionally permitted avenues—including industrial action—to demand the fulfilment of these national commitments.

“We urge our members and the broader public to remain vigilant and united in protecting our environment for future generations. The time for rhetoric is over; the time for action is now,” part of the statement read.

A quiet Kwahu Tafo community has been thrown into deep mourning following the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Isaac Kwasi Awuah Gorman, a final-year student of St. Joseph Technical Institute.

The young student was allegedly stabbed to death by a close friend, identified as Stephen Opuni, popularly known as “Sugar,” during an altercation reportedly triggered by a money disagreement.

Speaking to Adom News, Ebenezer Gorman, brother of the deceased, recounted the events that led to the tragedy and appealed for justice.

“My little nieces, who witnessed the incident, narrated the whole matter. According to them, Kwasi was with four of his friends. Suddenly, an altercation ensued over money, and they saw Akwasi hold his neck area and kept screaming that he had been stabbed. They were all students,” he said in anguish.

The tragedy is particularly difficult for the Gorman family, who say they had coexisted peacefully with both boys prior to the incident. Ataa Gorman, sister to the deceased, said the family is struggling to make sense of the sudden and violent turn of events.

The body of Isaac Gorman has since been deposited at the mortuary, where an autopsy will be conducted to aid investigations and provide forensic clarity into the exact cause of death.

Police in Kwahu Tafo acted swiftly to arrest the suspect, “Sugar,” who is currently in custody and assisting with investigations.

Authorities have yet to disclose the formal charges but have assured the public of a thorough probe into the incident. The community is hoping that swift legal proceedings will deliver justice for the Gorman family.

The tragic incident has also reignited concerns about youth violence and conflict resolution among teenagers, prompting calls for increased counselling and peer intervention strategies in schools.

‘You’re an educated illiterate’ – Mona Gucci slams MC Yaa Yeboah over Basintale comments

Mona Gucci is a Ghanaian media personality (L) MC Yaa Yeboah (R) Mona Gucci is a Ghanaian media personality (L) MC Yaa Yeboah (R)

Ghanaian media personality, Mona Gucci, has taken a swipe at entertainment pundit MC Yaa Yeboah, following comments she made against the Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale.

Contributing to discussions on thuggery witnessed at the Ablekuma North election rerun on United Showbiz on July 12, 2025, MC Yaa Yeboah alleged that Basintale, through posts on social media, subtly urged the thugs to cause havoc during the elections.

“Those tweets from notable political figures made on social media was an attempt to urge people to commit electoral violence and it is bad. Where are the family members of those people? You recruit someone’s breadwinner to commit violence, and that is a very bad thing,” Yaa Yeboah noted.

However, responding to MC Yaa Yeboah’s remarks, Mona Gucci, in a video shared on social media, called out the entertainment pundit describing her as an educated illiterate.

She told Yaa Yeboah to read and research her topics before making utterances on live television.

“How dare you. When they give you topics to talk about and you think you can’t contribute, better shut up, rather than to come on television to talk trash. People have been saying you don’t respect, and you think it is for fun?

“You look poised and eloquent, so you think you are intelligent, but you are not. You are actually an educated illiterate. You are doing too much, and we won’t sit down for you to disrespect our Malik Basintale. Don’t make that mistake again,” she warned.

Mona Gucci also advised Yaa Yeboah to refrain from speaking ill about Basintale.

“You are a nobody, so don’t speak to Malik Basintale like that. If you are not going to apologise to him for disrespecting him, just don’t mention his name again.

“Your utterances will make some people hurt you in town and Malik won’t be there at that point to stop them. I believe that if Malik were there at the point in time during the violence, he would have asked them to stop,” she added.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has charged the former Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, as well as six other individuals and three companies, for their alleged involvement in a GH¢280 million extortion and money laundering scheme.

According to the OSP, the accused persons will be arraigned before the High Court (Criminal Division 3) in Accra on Wednesday, 23 July 2025.

All 10 accused persons are currently on OSP inquiry bail.

The case follows months of investigations into alleged corruption at the NPA.

A charge sheet signed by the OSP’s Director of Prosecutions, Dr Isidore Tufuor, and filed on July 16, 2025, outlines 25 counts, including:

Extortion by a Public Officer

Conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering (Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 – Act 1044)

Money Laundering

The OSP alleges that between December 2022 and December 2024, Dr Abdul-Hamid, Jacob Kwamina Amuah (Coordinator of the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund – UPPF), and Wendy Newman (NPA Audit Department staff) used their positions to extort GH¢280,516,127.19 from bulk oil transporters and oil marketing companies without any lawful mandate.

The investigations further revealed that the illicit funds were laundered through three companies – Propnest Limited, Kel Logistics Limited, and Kings Energy Limited – allegedly owned or managed by some of the accused persons.

According to the OSP, the money was used to:

Purchase and construct houses.

Acquire trucks for an oil distribution business, and

Build fuel stations – all aimed at concealing the illegal proceeds.

The OSP also stated that Osei Tutu Adjei, a director of one of the accused companies, is currently on the run.

BoG assures traders of adequate forex supply

The Bank of Ghana has moved to calm tensions within the business community, assuring the Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA) that there is no shortage of foreign exchange (forex) in the country.

This follows mounting complaints from traders and importers about the difficulty in accessing forex from commercial banks, which they say is affecting their ability to conduct international transactions.

In response, the Central Bank convened a meeting with GUTA’s leadership to address the concerns.

According to a statement issued by GUTA, the Bank of Ghana assured that there is adequate forex in the system and urged the business community not to panic.

“The Bank of Ghana has assured the business community that there is enough forex and that there is no need for alarm,” the statement read.

The Central Bank further indicated it would engage the commercial banks to determine the root cause of the reported delays or access challenges and take appropriate measures to address them.

In light of the meeting, GUTA President, Dr. Joseph Obeng, called on members of the business community to remain calm as the Central Bank works to resolve the issue. He also encouraged members to report any persistent difficulties in accessing forex to the association for further action.

“The Central Bank is working to resolve the issue, and we urge our members to stay calm. However, if the problem persists, we ask that it be reported to us,” Dr. Obeng stated.

The assurance comes as traders face increased pressure from currency volatility and supply chain disruptions, making reliable access to forex critical for sustaining business operations and maintaining price stability on the market.

Cedi stability collective responsibility — BoG Governor

0

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has urged the general public to support the government’s efforts in strengthening the cedi and improving the economic fortunes of the country.

He said Ghanaians must take a keen interest in protecting the cedi as the only legal tender for all commerce and transactions, as well as reporting unscrupulous people who would engage in counterfeiting and other practices that could undermine the cedi.

“The dollar is not a legal tender in Ghana. What this means is that if you pay me in dollars for a service, I have every right not to accept. Consciously, we must protect the cedi and ensure that it is the only form of transaction in this country.

“Legal tender underpins the legitimacy of pricing, the enforceability of contract, the structure of our billing systems and the integrity of our financial markets,” he said.

Dr Asiama was speaking at the 11th Absa- UPSA Law School Quarterly Banking Roundtable programme at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) last Thursday.

The event brought together banking professionals, regulators and academia to discuss legal issues confronting the banking sector and the economy in general.

It was on the topic: “Ghana’s Legal Tender, Monetary Policy and the Rising Cedi.”

Legal tender

Dr Asiama reiterated that the cedi remained the only legal tender backed by law for all transactions, warning that any deviation from the cedi in preference for foreign currencies was not only illegal but an assault on the country’s sovereignty.

“Any attempt to displace the cedi in ordinary commercial transactions, whether through mandatory dollar invoicing, preferential pricing in foreign currency or informal currency substitution, is not only economically distorting but also legally impermissible. It challenges the very fabric of monetary sovereignty,’ he said.

According to him, the disturbing trend of businesses pricing their services in foreign currencies such as the US dollar or accepting payment in currencies other than the cedi was a threat to the country’s well-being.

He emphasised that such acts, including counterfeiting and other economic crimes, undermined confidence in the cedi, ultimately harming the nation’s economy and development.

“In too many instances, whether in real estate, whether in paying school fees or high-value retail, the cedi is bypassed not because it is legally unfit, but we have allowed perception to triumph policy and convenience to triumph sovereignty,” he added.

While lauding the performance of the over 42 per cent gain by the cedi since the beginning of the year, the BoG Governor said efforts to sustain the cedi were a collective responsibility, adding, “The cedi can be as good as any of the best-performing and recognised currencies.”

Economic destiny

Dr Asiama traced the history of the cedi during its introduction in 1965 by the country’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and explained that it was a very significant moment as it represented an independent nation ready to chart its path in the pursuit of prosperity and development.

“The introduction of the cedi to replace the West African pound by Dr Kwame Nkrumah in 1965 marked a profound act of economic self-determination.

It became a symbol of national identity, of institutional emergence and the aspiration of an independent people,” he added.

He announced that President John Dramani Mahama would soon launch the 60th anniversary of the cedi, which would kick-start a series of activities commemorating the introduction of the cedi.

Importance

The Dean of the UPSA Law School, Prof. Kofi Abotsi, said the event was an important platform to bring all sector players in the banking industry to stimulate discussions on how to improve the legal framework of the industry.
