Man remanded for alleged robbery of MoMo vendor

0

The Nalerigu District Court in the North East Region has remanded Waliu Fazazi into police custody for his alleged involvement in the robbery of a mobile money(MoMo) vendor at Bunkpurugu.

This was after Fazazi was arraigned before the court on Friday, April 25, 2025.

He is expected to reappear before the court on May 9, 2025.

The accused and other accomplices who are currently on the run on April 23, 2025, robbed a MoMo vendor of GH₵300,000.00.

In a statement, the Police said investigations revealed that the Fazazi approached the vendor under the pretext of withdrawing GH₵15,000.00, claiming it was a transfer from his brother, delayed by network issues.

Two masked men, one of whom was armed, suddenly appeared, during the process and demanded the vendor’s bag containing cash.

Amidst the firing of warning shots, the robbers fled the scene on a motorbike.

Africa Development Council urges caution amid growing galamsey protest

0

The Africa Development Council (ADC) has expressed concern over increasing agitation among sections of the Ghanaian public regarding the government’s efforts to combat illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey.”

In a statement released on Saturday, April 26, the ADC acknowledged the patriotism and vigilance displayed by citizens passionate about safeguarding Ghana’s environment and future.

However, the Council cautioned against exerting undue pressure on leadership for immediate fixes, urging all parties to “hasten slowly.”

The ADC noted that the scale of environmental degradation inherited from the previous administration has been monumental, creating a complex situation that demands both critical thinking and time to resolve sustainably.

Citing recent breakthroughs — notably the discovery and dismantling of a clandestine “City in the Forest” operation — the Council commended the government’s proactive measures against illegal mining.

“This achievement is a testament to the seriousness and commitment of the administration in addressing the underlying challenges,” the statement read.

The ADC further emphasised that the government’s efforts to curb galamsey come at a time when it is also managing an economic recovery, following what the Council described as a “catastrophic financial situation” left by the previous regime.

In light of these circumstances, the Council called on organisers of an upcoming demonstration to reconsider and postpone their plans in the spirit of national unity and good faith.

According to the statement, The ADC believes that giving the government the necessary space will facilitate the deployment of innovative, environmentally friendly mining technologies and accelerate the restoration of degraded lands and polluted water bodies.

The statement concluded with a call for dialogue, patience, and strategic collaboration among all stakeholders, stressing that these are critical to securing a sustainable, prosperous, and green future for Ghana.

$58m National Cathedral project contributed to NPP’s loss in 2024 election

The current state of National Cathedral project The current state of National Cathedral project

The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 general election, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, continues to explain the reasons behind his party’s disappointing performance in the election.

Speaking in Takoradi at the start of a nationwide ‘Thank You Tour’, Dr Bawumia, who served as Vice President under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, asserted that one of the reasons the NPP lost the election was the controversy surrounding the National Cathedral project.

He mentioned that Ghanaians were very angry that, despite the millions of dollars pumped into the project, the Akufo-Addo government was unable to complete it.

“The National Cathedral, we were not able to complete it after $58 million was sunk into it, and that caused a lot of anger among the public,” he is quoted as saying in a report by citinewsroom.com.

The Vice President also noted that the public was unhappy about the increase in fuel prices just three days before the election.

“Also, three days before the election, the price of fuel went up. When I heard it, I thought it was a joke. The drivers were angry at us. So, people went to vote against us with anger,” he said.

Dr Bawumia, however, refuted the claim that religion played a role in the NPP’s defeat.

He pointed out that the report by the Mike Oquaye Committee, which investigated the reasons behind the NPP’s loss in the 2024 election, did not identify religion as a factor.

“That is why we set up the Mike Oquaye Committee to produce a report on why we lost. I am happy to say that there was no religious or tribal factor that caused our defeat,” he added.

$58m expenditure on Nat’l Cathedral contributed to our defeat – Bawumia

0

Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has identified the contentious National Cathedral project and a last-minute hike in fuel prices as key factors behind the party’s defeat in the 2024 polls.

Addressing supporters in Takoradi during the launch of his nationwide Thank You Tour, Dr. Bawumia addressed claims from alleged leaks of the Mike Oquaye Committee report, which suggested that his perceived religious overtures played a role in the NPP’s loss.

The 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate rejected this assertion, emphasizing that economic and governance challenges were the primary reasons for the electoral setback.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted that the stalled National Cathedral initiative, which had already absorbed $58 million in state funds, damaged public confidence and intensified voter discontent.

Additionally, he pointed to the timing of the fuel price adjustment just days before the election as another critical misstep that swayed voters away from the NPP. He maintained that neither religious nor ethnic divisions were responsible for the party’s defeat

“The national cathedral we were not able to complete after $58 million was sunk into into it, caused a lot of rage in the public,” he stated.

“Also, three days before the election day, the price of fuel went up. When I heard it, I thought it was a joke. The drivers were angry at us. So, people went to vote against us with anger. That is why we put together the Mike Oquaye Committee to produce a report on why we lost. I am happy that there is no religious factor, and tribal factor that caused our defeat,” he stated.

Mahama is working to reverse the damage caused by the Agyapadie document – Ashanti Regional Minister

Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene is of the view that President John Dramani Mahama is making efforts to reverse the damage caused by the Agyapadie Document.

Chancellor of UEW appeals for peace in Bawku

0

The Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Neenyi Ghartey VII, has made a fervent appeal to the people of Bawku and surrounding communities, calling for an immediate end to ongoing violence in the area.

Speaking at the 29th Congregation of UEW on Saturday, April 26, Neenyi Ghartey VII said he was addressing the nation not only in his capacity as Chancellor but also as a concerned Ghanaian citizen.

“Let peace reign, let the guns go silent, let peace speak louder in Bawku,” he said.

The Chancellor emphasised the devastating impact of the conflict on families, children, and livelihoods, warning that persistent violence was unravelling the rich cultural fabric and industrious spirit for which Bawku is known.

“Bawku is a land rich in culture, strength and resilience, its people have long been known for their industrious spirit. But today, that spirit is being tested. Families are being torn apart, children cannot go to school, and livelihoods are crumbling under the weight of persistent violence,” he lamented.

Neenyi Ghartey VII stressed that national development and education could not flourish while communities remained trapped in cycles of conflict.

“We cannot educate a nation while part of it burns; we cannot and must not allow this to continue,” he said.

He urged all stakeholders to silence the guns and raise the voices of reason, unity, and brotherhood, reminding them that conflict only brings suffering and destruction.

“Children cannot go to school, and livelihoods are crowning under the wings of persistent violence. We cannot educate a nation while part of it burns, we cannot and must not allow this to continue,” he concluded.

Explore Guyanese market to boost local production – Ayariga to government

Leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga, has urged Ghana to expand its trade horizons by exploring markets like Guyana while pushing for a bold shift toward local production and manufacturing.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb Business, Ayariga questioned why Ghana has yet to tap into the Guyanese market, highlighting the broader need for the country to become a producing rather than a consuming economy.

He pointed out that everyday essentials, from electronic gadgets to clothing, are largely imported, emphasising the high cost of locally made goods, such as a Guyanese outfit, and questioning why such items remain unaffordable for many.

“There is a need for structural economic reforms to support local businesses, including lowering the cost of production, improving access to affordable credit, and creating a favorable environment for entrepreneurship,” he said.

“What about the Guyana market? Should we look at that? Of course,” Ayariga added, stressing that Ghana must rethink its heavy reliance on imports and begin harnessing its own economic potential.

“There are so many problems we need to solve. We need to have low costs of production, low costs of manufacturing, low interest rates, and available facilities for businesses to grow,” he continued.

Ayariga’s comments contribute to the growing calls for economic diversification, trade expansion, and self-reliance as Ghana seeks to build a more resilient and inclusive economy.

‘Politicizing the Judiciary Will Lead to Abuse” – Kwesi Botchwey Slams Efforts to Remove CJ

News Hub Creator56min

Kwesi Botchwey, a lawyer and member of the NPP Communications Team, has raised concerns over the ongoing effort to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, warning that it could set a dangerous precedent for Ghana’s democracy as per reports from Ghana Web.

Speaking on Asaase Radio’s The Forum, Botchwey emphasized the political risks involved, linking the move to previous statements from opposition leaders.

He stated that the drive to remove the Chief Justice could undermine the judiciary’s independence.

“This issue cannot be divorced from the NDC’s commitment to removing Madam Torkornoo,” Botchwey said, pointing to the political undertones surrounding the matter.

He expressed fears that politicizing the judiciary would encourage future administrations to target judicial members for political reasons, creating an unstable environment for justice.

Botchwey also urged the nation’s top judges to speak out and defend the judiciary’s autonomy. “I am calling on our revered justices to come out and condemn or call for due process,” he added, highlighting the importance of upholding the rule of law.

He further cautioned that if the current effort succeeds, it could lead to retaliatory actions in the future.

“If this action succeeds, any CJ could be removed when another party comes into power,” Botchwey warned, stressing the long-term consequences for Ghana’s democratic system.

Stop shifting blame for your personal ambitions – Palgrave Boakye-Danquah tells Bawumia

0

Dr Bawumia (L) and Dr Boakye-Danquah Dr Bawumia (L) and Dr Boakye-Danquah

A former government spokesperson has launched a blistering critique of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing him of betraying former President Nana Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) by distancing himself from key government failures during his ongoing “Thank You Tour.”

In a strongly worded open letter shared on April 26, 2025 and posted on net2tvgh.com, Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security under the Akufo-Addo administration, condemned Dr Bawumia’s attempts to disassociate himself from controversial policies such as the E-levy and the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

Dr Boakye-Danquah, who is now in the camp of former presidential aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong, pointed out that Dr Bawumia remained silent during the implementation of these policies, despite his role as Vice President and head of the Economic Management Team, only to later claim opposition when seeking political advantage.

“Bawumia’s claim that he opposed the E-levy, a highly controversial tax policy, is inconsistent with his silence during its introduction and passage, despite public outcry and its significant impact on Ghanaians,” he wrote.

“As Vice President, he had a platform to voice dissent or influence policy but chose not to, only to later claim opposition when it suited his political ambitions.”

He added, “Bawumia’s failure to publicly address or mitigate the DDEP’s impact, while now implying he was not fully responsible, reeks of opportunism and undermines the administration’s collective accountability.”

Boakye-Danquah also criticised Bawumia for shifting blame onto Akufo-Addo for economic hardships, including the cost-of-living crisis and fuel price hikes, despite being a key architect of the government’s economic policies.

He further accused Bawumia of hypocrisy, citing his past promotion of initiatives like the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO), which later collapsed, while failing to address grievances from beneficiaries of the School Feeding Programme and afforestation workers.

“This narrative contradicts his earlier boasts of the NPP’s achievements, such as the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO), which he championed but later collapsed due to non-payment of stipends, leaving thousands of youth stranded.

“Similarly, his silence on the non-payment of caterers under the School Feeding Programme and workers in the afforestation programme further exposes his inconsistency in addressing government failures he was complicit in,” he added.

Bawumia’s recent criticisms of the National Cathedral project and illegal mining (galamsey) were also described as acts of disloyalty, given his prominent role in the administration.

The former spokesperson dismissed Bawumia’s claim of ignorance about the pre-election fuel price increase as implausible, questioning whether it reflected negligence or deliberate deceit.

“These issues, mired in controversy and public discontent, were part of the administration’s agenda, yet Bawumia now seeks to absolve himself of responsibility, despite his prominent role in government.

“His claim of being unaware of the petrol price hike before the election is implausible for a Vice President deeply embedded in the administration, suggesting either gross negligence or a deliberate attempt to feign detachment,” he wrote.

Dr Boakye-Danquah concluded his letter by condemning Bawumia’s “justification tour” as a self-serving attempt to rewrite history, urging Ghanaians to reject leaders who evade accountability.

“Dr. Bawumia’s ‘justification tour’ is a calculated attempt to rewrite his legacy by scapegoating President Akufo-Addo and the NPP for failures he actively contributed to.

“His inconsistencies, championing policies in power but disowning them in defeat and his disloyalty to the President and the party that elevated him discredit his credibility as a leader.

“Ghanaians deserve a leader who takes responsibility, not one who shifts blame to salvage personal ambition.”

Dr Bawumia has yet to respond to the allegations.

Bawumia’s unifying character made him invite his other contestants for the Thank You Tour – Justin Kodua

0

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has praised Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for demonstrating strong leadership and unity by inviting his former competitors to join him on the party’s Thank You Tour.

Speaking on Sunday, 27 April, as part of the tour activities, Mr Kodua highlighted Dr Bawumia’s unifying character as crucial for the NPP’s progress ahead of the 2024 general elections.

According to Mr Kodua, Dr Bawumia’s decision to involve his former flagbearer contestants reflects his commitment to fostering togetherness within the party.

“It is the unifying character of Dr Bawumia that has made it possible for him to invite all those he contested against to be part of this important tour,” Mr Kodua stated, adding that such leadership was necessary to heal divisions and build a stronger party.

He further noted that by bringing everyone on board, Dr Bawumia was sending a clear signal that the party’s interest was above personal ambitions. “The NPP must work together, and Dr Bawumia is leading by example,” Mr Kodua emphasised.

He encouraged all members of the party to rally behind the flagbearer to ensure victory in the upcoming elections.

The General Secretary concluded by urging the grassroots and stakeholders to draw inspiration from the show of unity exhibited by the leadership.

“This is the spirit we need to move forward. Unity is our strength, and with it, the NPP will be unstoppable,” Mr Kodua said to enthusiastic applause from party supporters.

Ghanaian attacker Mohammed Kudus was on the scoresheet as West Ham United suffered a 3-2 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League on April 26, 2025.

In the build-up to the goal, defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka located his teammate Jarrod Bowen in the eighteen-yard box, whose pass Kudus notched onto to slot the ball, which passed through the legs of goalkeeper Verbruggen to find the back of the net, canceling Yasin Ayari’s goal in the 47th minute.

However, Brighton, who had the support at their Falmer Stadium home ground, bounced back into the game with goals from Mitoma and Quomo Baleba, which helped them secure a 3-2 win despite Tomas Souček scoring.

The loss sank West Ham in the Premier League table, leaving them in 17th position with 36 points after 34 games.

Mohammed Kudus has not had a good season, having scored four goals and made two assists after 28 appearances in the 2024/2025 Premier League season.

Despite the dip in performance, it is rumored that the Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr are willing to spend 100 million euros to secure his signature in the summer transfer window; however, it is understood that the player is yet to decide his future.

Charlotte Osei speaks amidst Chief Justice controversy

0

Charlotte Osei, former Chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, has humorously reacted to the ongoing controversy involving the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo as reported by Ghana Web.

In a social media post on April 26, 2025, Osei jokingly remarked that, based on an old African belief, she would have “died from sneezing” over the past two weeks due to the frequent mentions of her name in public discussions.

Osei’s comment comes in the wake of President John Dramani Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo, following a prima facie case established against her in relation to three petitions.

The President’s action, carried out in consultation with the Council of State, led to the formation of a five-member committee to investigate the matter.

The move has drawn attention due to their similarity to Osei’s own experience, where petitions against her led to her removal from office.

Many social media users have drawn parallels between the two cases, with some labeling it a situation of “karma.”

Both Osei and Torkornoo faced petitions that were referred to the Council of State, resulting in the subsequent decisions made by the President.

Osei, who was appointed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, was removed from office during the administration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Spending $58m on National Cathedral contributed to our defeat – Bawumia

0

Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has partly attributed the party’s loss in the 2024 general election to the controversy surrounding the National Cathedral project and a late fuel price increase.

Speaking in Takoradi at the start of a nationwide Thank You Tour, Dr. Bawumia responded to reports allegedly leaking from the Mike Oquaye Committee findings, which suggested that his perceived religious “flirting” contributed to the party’s electoral defeat.

Dr. Bawumia dismissed the claim, instead pointing to tangible economic and governance issues.

According to him, the uncompleted National Cathedral project, which had already consumed $58 million in public funds, significantly eroded public trust and fuelled voter dissatisfaction.

He also cited the rise in fuel prices just three days before the election as another major factor that turned voters against the NPP, insisting that religion or tribal affiliations were not to blame for the loss.

Dr. Bawumia’s remarks come at a time when internal party discussions are intensifying around the causes of the 2024 electoral outcome, with many stakeholders pushing for a candid review to reposition the NPP for the future.

Why NPP lost 2024: General Secretary opens up on Mike Oquaye Report

0

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has slightly lifted the lid on the much-anticipated report of the Mike Oquaye Committee, which investigated the reasons behind the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections.

Addressing NPP stakeholders at various meetings in the Western Region, on the opening day of the party’s Thank You Tour led by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the General Secretary stated that details of the report would not be made public for “strategic reasons.”

However, he explained that, in order to successfully implement the committee’s recommendations, it was important for party stakeholders to be made aware of certain aspects, particularly some of the reasons for the party’s defeat, as captured in the report.

Key among the reasons, Mr Kodua noted, were the actions and inactions of the government regarding certain critical issues.

These included the government’s failure to prioritise key projects in the party’s strongholds, a poor relationship between the government and the party, the arrogance of power, and internal bickering, among others.

The audience, who had shared similar sentiments with the Prof Oquaye Committee during its investigations, were in full agreement as the General Secretary outlined the factors identified.

Mr Kodua stressed the need for the party to fully implement the committee’s recommendations.

He added that, as part of the process, a Constitutional Review Committee has been inaugurated, and he urged members of the party to submit their proposals to it.

The government has reviewed the curfew hours in Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas in the Upper East Region.

The new hours will run from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., effective Friday, 25 April 2025.

The announcement was made by the Minister for the Interior, Mr Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, based on advice from the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and issued through an Executive Instrument.

The curfew was first introduced in February 2025 following renewed violence linked to a longstanding chieftaincy dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities.

The disturbances resulted in deaths, injuries, and growing insecurity, prompting the intervention of security agencies to restore calm.

The government has appealed to chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and residents to exercise restraint and to resolve grievances through peaceful means.

A ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and other offensive weapons remains in place.

The Ministry warned that anyone found with such items would be arrested and prosecuted.

Mr Muntaka-Mubarak said the government would continue working with traditional authorities and residents to help maintain peace in the municipality.

Dr. Bawumia’s remarks come at a time when internal party discussions are intensifying around the causes of the 2024 electoral outcome, with many stakeholders pushing for a candid review to reposition the NPP for the future.

He noted that he expects Parliament to approve the Timber Utilization Contracts (TUCs) when they resume sittings to facilitate the process in their bid to protect forests.

The minister also expressed his profound gratitude to the EU officials for supporting Ghana’s natural resources sector, urging them to continue their strong partnership so that they can be fruitful in the years ahead.

List of Popes buried at Basilica where Pope Francis asked to be buried

0

Pope Francis was laid to rest on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, making him the eighth pontiff interred at the historic church.

His burial marks a significant departure from the tradition of papal interments at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

Known for his humility and devotion to the Virgin Mary, Pope Francis had a special bond with Santa Maria Maggiore, often visiting the revered icon of Salus Populi Romani throughout his papacy. His tomb now rests near this sacred image, reflecting his pastoral heart and Marian devotion.

With his interment, Pope Francis joined seven other popes buried at Santa Maria Maggiore, including Pope Honorius III, Pope Nicholas IV, Pope St. Pius V, Pope Sixtus V, Pope Clement VIII, Pope Paul V, and Pope Clement IX.

His burial at the basilica is notable as it is the first papal interment outside the Vatican in more than a century.

Although St. Peter’s Basilica has been the customary resting place for modern popes, several popes in earlier centuries were buried elsewhere, reflecting the practices of their time.

Notably, Pope John Paul I was initially buried in the Vatican Grottoes beneath St. Peter’s, while popes like Pope Leo XIII and Pope Pius IX were interred in other chapels within Vatican grounds. However, it remains rare in the modern era for a pope to choose a site outside St. Peter’s Basilica entirely.

Pope Francis’s final resting place at Santa Maria Maggiore stands as a testament to his lifelong call for a simpler, more accessible Church, rooted in mercy, service, and deep devotion to the Mother of God.

As of April 2025, eight popes have been buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome:
1. Pope Honorius III (1216–1227)
2. Pope Nicholas IV (1288–1292)
3. Pope St. Pius V (1566–1572)
4. Pope Sixtus V (1585–1590)
5. Pope Clement VIII (1592–1605)
6. Pope Paul V (1605–1621)
7. Pope Clement IX (1667–1669)
8. Pope Francis (2013–2025)

Veteran Nigerian singer, Innocent Idibia, popularly known as  2Baba (2face), has reunited with his mother, Mrs. Rosemary Idibia, amid speculations surrounding his alleged marriage to Honourable Natasha Osawaru.

Recall that Mrs Idibia had earlier made headlines after publicly pleading for intervention in her son’s personal affairs. In a widely circulated video message, she appealed to Nigerians to help persuade Natasha Osawaru to “release” 2Baba from what she described as a troubling situation.

“This message is for Miss Natasha Osawaru of Edo State. I’m calling on all mothers in Nigeria to help me beg her to free my son,” she stated.

The situation escalated when the Idibia family, through their lawyer Wilson Anuge, petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS), declaring 2Baba missing. According to the petition dated February 7, 2025, the family reported that the singer had been missing since February 10, after he left his residence in his loungewear for what was believed to be a routine walk and never returned.

However, in a video making rounds on social media on Sunday, 2Baba and his mother were seen posing for photographs, surrounded by close friends and associates. In one of the videos, Natasha Osawaru appeared alongside a teenager, with 2Baba later joining them, dressed in black sportswear.

2Baba recently confirmed his relationship with Osawaru, a member of the Edo State House of Assembly representing the Egor Constituency under the Peoples Democratic Party. His confirmation came shortly after announcing his separation from his wife, Annie Idibia, with whom he shares two daughters.

On February 13, 2025, footage surfaced online showing 2Baba proposing to Osawaru in the presence of close friends.

Shortly after, Osawaru updated her Instagram bio to read ‘Honourable Natasha IDIBIA’, hinting at a formal union between the pair.

As of the time of filing this report, neither 2Baba nor Natasha Osawaru has issued further official comments on their relationship or the earlier family concerns.

LOLA Hope Foundation Ghana launches to empower vulnerable youth

0

In a bid to provide equal opportunities for young people in the Greater Accra Region and beyond, Reverend Minister Latifa Adekanla has established the LOLA Hope Foundation Ghana to empower young and vulnerable individuals.

The foundation aims to support those who wish to pursue Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) but lack the financial, emotional, and other essential support required to achieve their aspirations.

Speaking at the official launch of the foundation on Friday, 25th April, Rev. Latifa shared her journey and the inspiration behind the initiative. She revealed that she was able to attend secondary school thanks to the generosity of a sponsor, which paved the way for her success.

“I benefited from someone’s benevolence, I wouldn’t have gone to secondary school if not for someone who sponsored me,” she said. “I realised there are many people out there who need education, whether formal or informal, but have no one to help or guide them. That’s why we are launching the LOLA Hope Foundation.”

“This foundation will cater for vulnerable and underprivileged individuals who want to attend school but lack the means,” she added.

Rev. Latifa called on individuals and organisations to support her mission to positively impact the lives of those in need. She explained that the foundation will assist bright but financially disadvantaged students in accessing formal education at all levels.

For those interested in informal education, her LOLA Hair and Beauty initiative will provide vocational training in hairdressing, cosmetology, and other areas within the beauty industry.

She noted that even before the foundation’s official launch, several young people had already benefited from its educational support programme. Now, she is creating a platform for more people to join in and support the cause.

Rev. Latifa added that individuals interested in acquiring vocational skills will be supported through the LOLA Beauty and Hair College or any other TVET institution, under the umbrella of the foundation.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the event, she highlighted that her vision aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 and 8, aiming to reduce poverty and promote decent work and economic growth. “I want everyone to have something meaningful to do, which will help close the poverty gap,” she said.

Controversies that marred Kwame Nkrumah’s death as 53 years passes

0

The late Ghana's President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah The late Ghana’s President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah

Today, April 27, 2025, marks 53 years since Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, died in Bucharest, Romania, in 1972, while in exile after a short illness.

Reports indicated that the deceased president died from prostate cancer with no family member by his side after months of failing health while receiving treatment abroad.

The former president, who died at the age of 62, was overthrown from power during a coup in 1966 and moved to Conakry, Guinea, to settle there for some time after the Ghana Police Service offered a reward of $120,000 to anyone who could bring him back to the country dead or alive.

Nkrumah had suspicions of being poisoned, particularly because his cook had died a mysterious death in Conakry, Guinea, during his exile in the country right after his overthrow in Ghana.

Upon his death on April 27, 1972, with Guinea now in possession of the body of Nkrumah, its President, Sékou Touré, was not convinced in releasing it to Ghana, although there had been assurances to him, by Col Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, Ghana’s leader at the time, that he would be given a dignified burial befitting his status.

All Sékou Touré wanted for his country’s co-president, was that Ghanaian authorities would meet his demands; after all, since Romania had sent the body to their country, they were in a strong position to dictate terms.

After thorough deliberations, Kwame Nkrumah’s body was later flown to Ghana, where it was laid in state at the State House in Accra, and thousands of Ghanaians paid their last respects.

The body was then flown to his hometown, Nkroful, where he was buried in a vault.

Nkrumah’s legacy, coupled with the Pan-Africanism movement, shaped politics in Ghana and on the African continent, making him a globally recognised figure.

Africa’s prosperity vital for global economic growth

0

Abebe Aemro Selassie, Director of the IMF's African Department Abebe Aemro Selassie, Director of the IMF’s African Department

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has emphasised that Africa’s prosperity presents a significant opportunity for the global economy, calling for deeper collaboration amid rising global trade tensions.

Speaking at a press briefing on the Regional Economic Outlook for Sub-Saharan Africa on Friday, April 25, 2025, Abebe Aemro Selassie, Director of the IMF’s African Department, said the region is poised to become the main source of labour, investment, and consumption over the next decade.

“A strong, stable, and prosperous Africa is important not just for its people, but for the world,” Selassie stated.

The event was part of activities for the 2025 Spring Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank Group (WBG) in Washington, DC, USA.

Despite heightened global uncertainty driven by trade disputes, Selassie stressed that external support for Africa, as it undergoes a critical demographic transition, is of “tremendous strategic importance for the future of our planet.”

The IMF projects Sub-Saharan Africa’s economic growth to ease slightly to 3.8% in 2025, with a modest rebound to 4.0% in 2026. However, Selassie cautioned that escalating global trade tensions could dampen the region’s outlook.

The Regional Economic Outlook report noted a worrying decline in official development assistance to the region, even as many countries grapple with inflationary pressures and external shocks, just as early signs of policy success begin to emerge.

“Building robust fiscal and external buffers is more important than ever, underpinned by credibility and consistency in policymaking,” Selassie advised.

He emphasised that Sub-Saharan Africa must improve spending efficiency and strengthen public financial management to unlock benefits for its citizens.

High economic growth, he added, is imperative to create the millions of jobs the region needs to sustain its expanding workforce.

Reaffirming the IMF’s commitment, Selassie noted that since 2020, the Fund has disbursed more than US$65 billion to Sub-Saharan Africa, including over US$8 billion in the past year alone.

He also pledged that the IMF would continue to expand its policy advice and capacity development efforts to support the region’s economic resilience.

Ghanaians must think together to fight galamsey – Rt. Rev. Ofori-Akyea

0

The Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana has held its 28th Annual Synod, with a call on Ghanaians to unite in addressing the issue of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The Right Reverend Samuel Ofori-Akyea, Tema Diocesan Bishop, made the call at the synod, stressing the need to set aside political differences in order to tackle the menace and safeguard the nation for future generations.

“I am very afraid that if we don’t stop some of these things, especially galamsey, the nation will suffer; everybody will suffer,” Rt. Rev. Ofori-Akyea said. “We need to act urgently, and I pray that this time we don’t make it a political issue.”

He emphasized that Ghanaians must think positively, work together, and unite in the fight against galamsey, which he described as essential to preserving the country’s future.

Rt. Rev. Ofori-Akyea noted that environmental concerns were also important to the church, as the well-being of the nation directly affected the church and its mission. While the church would continue to pray for the country, he urged all citizens to take practical action to address national issues.

Highlighting the diocese’s initiatives, the Bishop said they had intensified their commitment to environmental stewardship through sanitation campaigns and tree-planting exercises across their circuits.

He underlined the importance of sanitation, urging religious organisations, especially churches, to promote cleanliness, proper waste management, and access to safe water.

Tree planting, he said, remains a key focus of the Methodist Church’s climate action and social responsibility efforts. He explained that the diocese, through its social services coordinating office, had integrated tree planting into its environmental ministry.

“Tree planting is not just an ecological gesture but a spiritual act of obedience,” he added. “Let us preserve the environment and leave a legacy of hope and life for generations to come.”

Mr. Robert Andrew Taylor, Lay Chairman of the Tema Diocese, said the church had rolled out leadership programmes to prepare and equip the youth to take up leadership roles in the future.

He stated that the Tema Diocese currently has 13 circuits, with plans to add six more, creating the need for more young people to step into leadership positions. Mr. Taylor noted that the youth were frequently engaged in leadership activities, particularly because of their familiarity with emerging technologies.

He added that the various youth programmes organised by the church helped steer young people away from social vices such as drug abuse, and that the institution would continue to pray with them and encourage moral living.

More Ghanaians endorse military intervention if elected leaders abuse power – Report

0

A growing number of Ghanaians are expressing support for military intervention in politics if elected leaders abuse their mandate, according to the 2024 Afrobarometer findings.

The survey, conducted by the Centre for Democratic Development-Ghana (CDD-Ghana), reveals that 51% of citizens believe the Ghana Armed Forces should take control in such circumstances — an 11-percentage point increase from 40% in 2022.

Conversely, public opposition to military involvement is declining, with the proportion of Ghanaians who believe the military should never intervene falling from 55% in 2022 to 47% in 2024.

These findings were presented at a regional dissemination event in Kumasi, organised by CDD-Ghana in collaboration with the Centre for Community Livelihood Development.

The programme was supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) under the Participation, Accountability, Integrity for Resilient Democracy (PAIReD) initiative, co-funded by the European Union (EU) and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, and commissioned by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It is being implemented by GIZ in partnership with Ghana’s Ministry of Finance.

Of particular concern is the demographic tilt toward support for military intervention, with Ghanaian youth representing the majority. Fifty-two percent of respondents aged 18–25 endorse a military takeover if leadership fails, rising to 56% among those aged 26–35.

Gender differences also emerged, with 53% of men and 48% of women expressing support for military involvement under such conditions.

Presenting the findings, Ms. Mavis Zupork Dome, Senior Research Analyst at CDD-Ghana, noted that public opinion was divided on the path forward after a military takeover: 41% advocate for a gradual transition back to civilian rule, even if it takes years, while 38% prefer an immediate return to civilian governance.

Another 14% indicated they would not mind the military remaining in power indefinitely if it served the nation’s best interest.

Mr. Jonathan Donkor, Technical Advisor at GIZ, stressed the importance of citizen engagement in democratic governance.

“It is an undeniable fact that when citizen voices are included in governance, policies better serve people’s needs,” he said.

He also highlighted the role of data-driven initiatives like Afrobarometer in bridging the gap between citizens and policymakers.

The 2024 findings highlight a growing disillusionment with democratic leadership in Ghana, especially among the youth, and underscore the urgent need for stronger governance, accountability, and civic education to safeguard the country’s democratic stability.

Ghana on course to reaching sustainable path – IMF

0

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is confident that Ghana will reach a Debt-to-Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 55 per cent by 2028, putting it on a sustainable path.

“If we have reached an agreement, it’s because those overall objectives are still on track. So the response is yes. Ghana is still on track to achieve those objectives,” said Mr Stéphane Roudet, Mission Chief for Ghana.

He was responding to a question at a roundtable with Ghanaian journalists during the 2025 IMF/World Bank Group Spring Meetings in Washington DC, USA, on Friday.

He attributed the country’s ability to reach debt sustainability to being on track in achieving targets under the ongoing $3 billion loan supported programme with the IMF, urging the country to adhere to programme objectives.

However, he said it was important for the Government to remain steadfast in implementing the programme as planned, by adhering to all reforms and objectives, especially as trade tensions could pose some risks.

Mr Roudet commended the Government for the high level of commitment and ownership of programme objectives, including the reinstatement of stronger fiscal rules and institutions, as well as authorisation by the Ministry of Finance before procurement.

He expressed optimism that the Fiscal Council that would have more teeth, be capable of assessing fiscal policy ex ante at the time a budget was being prepared and exposed to see whether the fiscal rule had been respected.

He expressed the hope that the economy would stabilise, as inflation went down and the deficit moved back on track with the programme objectives.

That would strengthen confidence in the Ghanaian economy, bolster investment and the role of the private sector, Mr Roudet said, adding that it would “not just be in one sector, but across the board.”

Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkonoo Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkonoo

The Ghana Union Movement (GUM) has issued a disclaimer distancing itself from reports suggesting its involvement in a planned demonstration against the suspension and pending removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkonoo.

The demonstration, reportedly scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2025, has been linked to a group of political parties opposing the Chief Justice’s removal.

In a statement dated April 26, 2025, signed by the party’s General Secretary, Anthony A. Gold Ahinful, GUM clarified that it had not been informed, engaged, or consulted regarding any such meeting or demonstration.

The party emphasised its commitment to democracy and the rule of law, stating that any issues concerning the Chief Justice should be addressed through legal channels.

The statement further urged all members of GUM to abstain from participating in the demonstration, reiterating that the party is not part of the agenda and does not endorse the planned protest.

“I am by this release stating categorically that such information in the media space about GUM as part of such a group is untrue, and all must treat it as something of no legitimate value,” the statement read.

“GUM is not part of that agenda, and all members of GUM should abstain from such a demonstration.

“GUM believes in democracy and the rule of law, and such a case concerning the Honorable Chief Justice should be handled through legal means, and anyone who believes contrary should exclude GUM from that act.”

Debt-to-GDP: Ghana on course to reaching sustainable path

Stephane Roudet is IMF Mission Chief for Ghana Stephane Roudet is IMF Mission Chief for Ghana

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is confident that Ghana will reach a Debt-to-Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 55 percent by 2028, putting it on a sustainable path.

“If we have reached an agreement, it’s because those overall objectives are still on track. So the response is yes. Ghana is still on track to achieve those objectives,” said Stéphane Roudet, Mission Chief for Ghana.

He was responding to a question at a roundtable with Ghanaian journalists during the 2025 IMF/World Bank Group spring meetings in Washington DC, USA, on Friday.

He attributed the country’s ability to reach debt sustainability to being on track in achieving targets under the ongoing US$3 billion loan supported programme with the IMF, urging the country to adhere to programme objectives.

2 Things You Need to Accept If You Want a Happy Marriage

0

Nobody enters a marriage expecting the worst for themselves. The hope is always to have a long, happy marriage — a happily ever after. In reality, however, happily ever after is never a chance encounter, nor can it be achieved alone.

A healthy marriage isn’t self-sustaining; it’s a reciprocal dynamic that requires intentional effort from both sides.

General Langley Surfaces In Ivory Coast After Dropping Bomb On Ibrahim Traore

0

A top American general, Michael Langley, has been seen in Ivory Coast, a country in West Africa. This happened just a few days after he accused the leader of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traore, of being corrupt. Many people in Africa are wondering why the general suddenly visited, especially because the political situation in that area is not very stable.

Last week, General Langley said that “Ibrahim Traore is using the gold of the country to protect himself, not to help the people of Burkina Faso.” But many people in Burkina Faso and other African countries strongly disagreed with this. They said that what the general said was not true and could even cause problems. In Burkina Faso, there is evidence that things are actually getting better.

Since Captain Traore became the leader, he has started projects to give people free homes, put a lot of money into building things like roads, built factories, and made rules that help people by making the cost of living lower. Many people in Burkina Faso think these things show that the country’s money is being used to help everyone, not just a few people.

A political expert in Accra, the capital of Ghana, told reporters, “It’s clear what they want to do. They don’t want to see African countries develop. If Africa develops, they can’t keep taking its resources. Remember, if they attack Traore, it’s like attacking all of Africa.”

The fact that General Langley arrived in Ivory Coast right after Captain Traore accused Ivory Coast of hiding people who tried to kill him is making people even more suspicious. Many people think that having a high-ranking American military officer so close to Burkina Faso’s border makes it seem like there might be plans to cause trouble for Traore’s government.

Across Africa, more and more people are speaking up and asking for everyone to be careful and united. Many believe that Africa needs to work together to protect itself from what they see as new attempts to control its countries.

A young activist said on social media, “It’s time to wake up. Africa must be united.” This shows how many young people in Africa feel. They want to see their continent become free from other countries interfering in its affairs.

As things remain tense, one thing is certain: people in Africa and around the world are paying close attention to what happens next.

The Ghana Police Service has arrested three individuals suspected to be involved in a gold robbery incident at Wassa Afransie in the Western Region.

The suspects, Felix Adjei (alias Africa or Nana Adjei), Nigerian national Emmanuel Kelvin, and Kofi Appiah (alias Kesse), are accused of stealing gold worth GH₵199,000 and other items from employees of Mas Palasco Gold Buying Limited.

Investigations indicate that on April 4, 2025, Kofi Appiah, a driver with the company, and his colleague Emmanuel Adu were ambushed by armed assailants while returning from Wassa Ayiem after collecting gold from a client. Shots were fired, and the attackers made off with 14 pounds of gold, two mobile phones, and an unregistered Toyota Corolla, later found abandoned nearby.

The police arrested Appiah on April 21 at his home in Wassa Akropong. The other two suspects were tracked down and picked up at separate locations soon after.

A search during the operation uncovered a Jojeff pump-action gun with butt number 168316, a Calymm PDS pistol without a serial number, 25 rounds of 9mm ammunition, an AA cartridge, two G3 ammunitions, a locally manufactured pistol, and GH₵65,000 in suspected robbery proceeds.

The trio is currently in police custody and assisting with ongoing investigations. They are expected to be charged and brought before the court.

Government to embark on bold reforms to strengthen Public Financial Management

Thomas Nyarko Ampem, Deputy Minister of Finance Thomas Nyarko Ampem, Deputy Minister of Finance

Thomas Nyarko Ampem, Deputy Minister of Finance, has emphasised that achieving excellence in Public Financial Management (PFM) must be anchored on effective governance, accountability, and transformative development.

Speaking at the opening of the 2025 Annual Conference of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) in Ho, Thomas Nyarko stated that the government has taken bold corrective measures to overhaul the country’s PFM architecture.

He noted that since assuming office, the government has amended both the PFM and Procurement Acts to accelerate the implementation of an enhanced fiscal framework, including the establishment of an independent Fiscal Advisory Council.

The two-day conference, held at the Ho Technical University auditorium under the theme “Enhancing Public Financial Management Excellence,” has drawn accountants and finance professionals from across the country.

Highlighting recent achievements, Nyarko said that within four months, the government had strengthened controls on new spending commitments, launched a comprehensive audit of uncovered arrears, and operationalised a fiscal compliance framework.

Additional measures include expanding the Ghana Electronic Procurement System, conducting payroll audits and functional reviews of selected Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), enhancing risk management systems, and updating the centralized inventory of all public investment projects.

Thomas Nyarko stressed that the CAGD is central to these reforms, being the institution mandated to ensure the effective, transparent, and accountable use of public funds.

He warned that the era of recklessness and misuse of public resources is over, pledging that infractions will be met with the full force of the law.

He expressed optimism that the conference would serve as a catalyst for innovation, institutional renewal, and strategic partnerships that will strengthen Ghana’s economic and fiscal governance.

In his remarks, Kwasi Agyei, Controller and Accountant General, disclosed that more than 4,000 government salaries had been suspended following payroll reviews, which revealed inconsistencies with National Identification Authority (NIA) numbers and questionable data credentials.

He reminded payroll validators of the serious consequences for processing payments for unqualified individuals, as outlined in PFM Regulation 90 (2019) and Section 96 of the PFM Act (2016), Act 921, and pledged strict enforcement of sanctions.

To enhance payroll data security and integrity, Agyei outlined measures including strong data encryption, access controls, multi-factor authentication, biometric identification and validation, regular data audits and reconciliations, penetration testing, and increased collaboration with the Internal Audit Agency.

He urged CAGD staff to uphold values of integrity, transparency, professionalism, collaboration, and a commitment to public interest, stressing, “Let us commit to improving public financial management not merely as a catchphrase, but as a consistent standard of excellence.”

Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), highlighted the interconnectedness of the GRA and CAGD, likening the two institutions to “unidentical twins”, one responsible for mobilizing resources and the other for managing expenditures.

He called for both institutions to operate above reproach and deliver services with integrity and innovation.

Also addressing the conference, Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu stated that excellence in PFM would directly lead to improved infrastructure, quality education, better healthcare, and sustainable development anchored in transparency and public trust.

Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, represented by Togbe Adu Bobi IV, reminded participants that effective and ethical management of public resources is not just a professional obligation but a patriotic duty.

He urged the gathering to reignite a passion for building a Ghana where fiscal responsibility, innovation, and transparency are the hallmarks of governance.
