Heavy security as Asantehene mediates Bawku conflict at Manhyia

0

There is heavy police and military presence at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, as the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, began a high-level mediation process aimed at resolving the long-standing Bawku conflict.

The enhanced security measures were put in place to ensure the safety of dignitaries, traditional leaders, and stakeholders who gathered at the palace for the peace talks.

The mediation comes at a time when tensions in Bawku remain high due to ongoing violence and a long-standing chieftaincy dispute.

The Asantehene’s intervention is seen as a critical step in building consensus between the feuding factions.

In an interview with Citi News, Sarfo Kantanka, a historian at the Manhyia Palace, noted that strict security arrangements have been made to ensure the talks proceed without incident.

“Anything involving a conflict requires a higher degree of security. No one should be told that there will be a security presence,” he stated.

“From all that has taken place, it has always been in the open, but this time, it is going to be a two-way mediation — some sessions will be held in camera, and others will be open.”

“It could turn for Hearts of Oak” – Amankwaah Mireku on upcoming Super Clash

0

Former Hearts of Oak captain Amankwaah Mireku has weighed in on the highly anticipated Super Clash between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, cautioning fans not to make assumptions based on current form.

Speaking with Ghana Sports Page, Mireku highlighted the unpredictable nature of the historic rivalry, reflecting on how times have changed since his playing days.

“Hearts of Oak and Kotoko games are unpredictable. It’s not like our time where you could boldly claim that we will beat Kotoko — like when we beat them 4-0,” he said.

While acknowledging Kotoko’s current strong position, Mireku warned that league standings don’t guarantee victory in a match of this magnitude.

“I think it will be a difficult game. Just because Kotoko are at the top doesn’t mean they will beat Hearts of Oak. It will be difficult, but it could turn for Hearts of Oak,” he added.

The Super Clash remains the biggest fixture in Ghanaian football, with pride, history, and momentum always on the line — regardless of form.

Kotoko have won the last three matches between the two.

The Porcupines are in the title race and would need a win to close in on Bibiani Golds Stars. Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak who are winless in their last four games, are aiming for a win to get back to winning ways.

Aisha Modi is not someone you can trust

Media personality Ola Michael has issued a strong warning to Ghanaian celebrities about getting involved with Aisha Modi.

He has emphasised that she is not someone to be trusted.

Speaking on Neat FM, Ola Michael questioned Aisha Modi’s motives for associating herself with celebrities in the industry.

“Aisha Modi is not someone you can trust. Every celebrity becomes vulnerable at some point, and all these celebrities in Ghana should be wary of her.

“Even if you find yourself in a desperate situation, avoid seeking help from her, and if she offers assistance, it’s best not to accept it,” he said.

Ola Michael further challenged the perception that Aisha Modi is a constant investor within the industry.

He questioned her repeated complaints about being mistreated by individuals she claims to have helped.

He further emphasised that no one forces Aisha into relationships with public figures, stating that she seeks out these connections for personal validation and status.

“But did they force her to associate with them? She is the one always trying to get close to these celebrities, seeking a sense of belonging and the bragging rights that come from claiming to be connected to these celebrities,” he added.

I pray NDC continues to build on the ‘better economy’ they inherited – Ahiagbah

Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to continue to improve the economy they inherited from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He made this remark at the ongoing NPP “Thank You Tour,” during which the party is expressing its gratitude to party faithful across the country.

In a report by citinewsroom.com, Ricahrd Ahiagbah is quoted to have said that major policy decisions were made in the best interest of Ghana and not out of ill intent.

While admitting that some policies rolled out under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration were painful processes for Ghanaians, he asserted that they have left the economy in a good place.

He, therefore, enjoined the NDC to jealously protect their gains and build on it.

“The DDEP was a very touchy matter and I can tell you that during the early days of the discussions were difficult, they were tough and nobody made those decisions lightly.

“So, we are fully aware but the only thing was [that they were] just a necessary decision to make notwithstanding the pain. So, we did that and today, we are heading to a better place,” he said.

He added that; “My only prayer is that the NDC, who have inherited a better economy, will continue to build on it so that the difficult decisions we have taken to bring us this far we don’t regress.”

He reiterated the NPP’s intention to campaign on its record, confident that over time, Ghanaians would come to better appreciate the administration’s performance amid global and domestic challenges.

‘I never called Tamale residents power thieves’

0

John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister of Energy and Green Transition John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister of Energy and Green Transition

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has refuted claims circulating on social media that attribute to him comments describing residents of Tamale as “power thieves.”

In a press statement on April 28, 2025, John Jinapor dismissed the reports as “entirely false, contrived, and baseless,” urging the public to disregard such assertions.

“The audio-visual recordings will confirm that at no point during my visit did I refer to the people of Tamale as power thieves,” the Minister emphasised.

John Jinapor clarified that during his visit, he had merely highlighted concerns about the high Aggregate Technical, Commercial, and Collection (ATC&C) losses within the operational region of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).

He noted that these losses have significantly contributed to the frequent power outages experienced in parts of the country.

“For the avoidance of doubt, technical and collection losses have nothing to do with power theft but rather reflect inefficiencies within the utility company,” he stated.

The Minister further stressed the urgent need for reforms in Tamale’s power sector, calling for “significant investments and operational improvements” to address ongoing challenges.

He added that enhancing revenue collection and improving technical operations is essential to achieving a reliable, consistent, and uninterrupted power supply for the people of Tamale.

Dr John Abdulai Jinapor also reaffirmed his profound respect, loyalty, and deep connection to the people of Tamale, whom he described as his kinsmen.

He emphasised that any reports or claims suggesting otherwise are entirely false and without merit, and urged the public to treat such misinformation with the contempt it deserves.

“Let me finally assure the chiefs, elders, and people of Tamale of my utmost respect and reverence for them. I would never use derogatory words to describe my own people,” the Minister said.

Who be di three African Popes we don ever get and why no oda one since?

0

Di death of Pope Francis don lead to speculation say di next leader of di Catholic Church go be from Africa.

But di Church bin don get Africans for di top bifor.

Historians believe say e bin get three popes wit connections to di continent, di most recent wey bin reign over 1,500 years ago.

Dey all dey believed to be of North African descent. Di Roman Empire bin stretch across modern-day Tunisia, di north-east of Algeria and di coast of western Libya.

Bifor di establishment of Islam in di seventh century, Christianity bin get strong presence in di region.

Prof Christopher Bellitto, from Kean University in di US, tell BBC say: “North Africa na di Bible Belt of ancient Christianity.”

While little dey known about di personal lives and backgrounds of di last three African popes, historians agree say all bin play significant role in di early history of di Catholic Church.

In fact, all three popes don dey recognised in di Church as saints.

Victor I (AD189-199)

Dem tink say e be of Berber origin, Pope Victor I bin dey in charge of di Catholic Church for time of regular persecution of Christians sake of dem no gree to accept and worship Roman gods.

E bin perhaps dey best known say e make sure say Christians celebrate Easter on a Sunday.

In di second century, some Christian groups from di Roman province of Asia (in modern-day Turkey) bin celebrate Easter on di same day wey di Jews bin dey celebrate Passover, wey fit fall on different days of di week.

However, Christians in di Western part of di Empire believe say Jesus dey resurrected on a Sunday, so Easter suppose always dey celebrated on dat day.

Di debate over wen di resurrection bin happun make am real issue of argument.

Di ‘Easter controversy’ dey symbolic of larger conflicts between East and West wey dey worry wit whether or not Christians suppose follow Jewish practices.

Victor I bin call di very first Roman Synod – one gathering of Church leaders – to resolve di mata.

E bin do dis wit threat to excommunicate from di Church those bishops wey refuse to comply wit im wishes.

“E bin rather be forceful voice for getting everyone on di same page,” Prof Bellitto tok.

Dis be one impressive feat, Bellitto tok, sake of say, “e be di Bishop of Rome wen Christianity bin dey illegal in di Roman empire.”

Anoda important part of Victor I legacy na to introduce Latin as di common language of di Catholic Church. Before, Ancient Greek na di primary language of di Catholic Liturgy as well as official communication for di Church.

Victor I imself bin write in – and speak – Latin, wey dey widely spoken in North Africa.

Miltiades (AD311-314)

Pope Miltiades dey believed to dey been born in Africa.

During im reign, Christianity bin gain increasing acceptance from successive Roman emperors, e eventually become di Empire official religion.

Bifor dis, di persecution of Christians don dey widespread at different points in di Empire history.

However, Prof Bellitto bin point out say Militiades no dey responsible for dis change, say di Pope be di “recipient of di Roman benevolence” rather dan being a great negotiator.

Di Roman Emperor Constantine bin give Miltiades palace, e become di first pope to get official residence.

E also dey granted permission by Constantine to build di Lateran Basilica, now di oldest public church in Rome.

While modern popes live and work for di Vatican, di Lateran church sometimes dey referred to in Catholicism as “di mother of all churches”.

Gelasius I (AD492-496)

Gelasius I na di only one of di three African popes wey historians believe say dem no born for Africa.

“Reference to am say e be . . . Roman-born. So we no know if e [ever] live for North Africa, but e dey clear say e be of North African descent,” Prof Bellitto explain.

E be di most important of di three African church leaders, according to Prof Bellitto.

Gelasius I dey widely recognised as di first pope to officially dey called di “Vicar of Christ”, term wey signify Pope role as Christ representative on Earth.

E bin also develop di Doctrine of di Two Swords, wey bin emphasise di separate-but-equal powers of di Church and di state.

Gelasius I bin make di critical distinction wey both powers give to di Church by God, wey den delegate earthly power to di state, wey make di Church ultimately superior.

“Later on, in di Middle Ages, Popes sometimes bin try to veto di selection of emperor or a king, sake of say dem tok say God give dem dat power,” Prof Bellitto tok.

Gelasius I dey remembered, too, for im response to di Acacian Schism – one split between di Eastern and Western Christian Churches from 484 to 519.

During dis period, Gelasius I bin establish di supremacy of Rome and di papacy over di entire Church, East and West, wey experts believe say bin go further dan any of im predecessors.

Gelasius also dey responsible for one popular celebration wey dem still dey mark every year, establish St Valentine’s Day on 14 February in 496 to commemorate di Christian martyr St Valentine.

Some accounts say Valentine be priest wey bin kontinu to perform weddings in secret wen dem dey banned by Emperor Claudius II.

Historians believe say Valentine’s Day dey rooted in di Roman love and fertility festival, Lupercalia, and na move by Gelasius I to Christianise pagan traditions.

Wetin di Africa popes look like?

Prof Bellitto say no way to know wit any degree of accuracy wetin di three popes look like.

“We need to remember say di Roman Empire, and indeed di Middle Ages, no tink of race as we tink of am nowadays. E get notin to do wit skin colour,” e bin tell BBC

“Pipo for di Roman Empire no deal wit race, dem bin dealt wit ethnicity,” e tok.

Prof Philomena Mwaura na Associate Professor of Religious Studies for Kenyatta University in Nairobi. She stress say Roman Africa dey very multicultural, wit local Berber and Punic groups, freed slaves and pipo wey bin don come from Rome dey found there.

“Di North African community dey quite mixed, and na trade route also for many pipo wey bin dey involved in trade in dia earlier antiquity,” she bin explain to BBC.

Rather dan to identify wit some ethnic groups, she say, “most pipo wey belong to areas within di Roman Empire bin regard themselves as Roman.”

Why African pope never dey since?

Afta Gelasius I, no oda Pope dey believed to be from di Roman province of Africa.

“Di church for North Africa dey weakened by very many forces, including di fall of di Roman Empire and also di invasion of Muslims [into North Africa] for di 7th century,” Prof Mwaura tok.

However, some experts say di fact say Islam dey front for di region, no explain di absence of African Pope over di past two millennia.

Prof Bellitto say di process to elect new pontiff become “Italian monopoly” over di years.

However, e say di likelihood of a Pope from Asia or Africa in di next decades dey high sake of say Catholics for di southern hemisphere outnumber those for di north.

In fact, Catholicism dey expand more rapidly in sub-Saharan Africa today dan anywhere else.

Di latest figures show say e get 281 million Catholics for Africa in 2023. Dis account for 20% of di worldwide congregation.

But Prof Mwaura argue say “although Christianity dey very strong in Africa, di power of di Church still dey di north, wia di resources bin don dey.”

“Maybe, as e dey kontinu to dey very strong within di continent and dey support itself, den one time go come wen African pope go dey,” Prof Mwaura tok.

Bog Revises End-Year Inflation Target To 12%

0

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has hinted that it has revised its end of year inflation rate of 12% for 2025
The BoG governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama, who made this known on the sidelines of the IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings said the revised target is based on new monetary measures by the Bank of Ghana, alongside complementary fiscal actions by the government.
“Look at what is happening to the cedi, as well as the policy action taken at the last monetary policy committee meeting, that should help tackle food inflation and deliver lower inflation going forward,” he stated.
Dr. Asiama stated that the revised 12 per cent target marks a sharp cut from the earlier projection of 16 per cent for 2025 and that the Bank of Ghana will take the required actions based on its data.
Some analysts have said that the target if achieved could represent one of the lowest inflation rates Ghana has recorded in recent years which could be the lowest in four years.
Inflation slowed for the third consecutive month in March 2025, reaching 22.4 per cent, down from 23.1 per cent in February.
Some analysts now believe the bank may have to hike rates again in May, along with other monetary measures, to meet the revised target.
The IMF expects Ghana’s inflation to fall further to 9.4 per cent by the end of 2026, potentially bringing the country closer to achieving single-digit inflation for the first time in years.
In the 2025 budget, Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson announced the government’s goal of ending the year with an inflation rate of 11.9 per cent, as part of broader efforts to stabilise the economy
In its Africa regional economic outlook, the IMF projected that Ghana would end 2025 with an inflation rate of 17.5 per cent—significantly higher than the 11.9 per cent forecast in the 2025 budget by Dr. Forson.

Essumegyahene acts in the absence of Mamponghene – Manhyia historian

Nana Okyere Kusi Aduako II, Paramount Chief of Essumegya (L) Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II Nana Okyere Kusi Aduako II, Paramount Chief of Essumegya (L) Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II

Monarchical Historian at the Manhyia Palace, Opanin Osei-Bonsu Safo-Kantanka, has explained that in the absence of Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the head of the left wing of the Ashanti Kingdom takes charge until a new chief is installed, after his demise.

He said the Paramount Chief of Essumegya, Nana Okyere Kusi Aduako II, will act in the stead of the deceased chief to perform his duties of steering affairs of the kingdom in the absence of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

“The Essumegyahene will be in charge since he is the head of the left wing of the Ashanti kingdom until a new chief is installed,” he said.

Safo-Kantanka, in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, stated that the Ashanti Kingdom has been divided into two major groups though there are other groups, with the Mamponghene and Essumegyahene heading the right and left wings respectively.

“The Ashanti kingdom is divided into two major groups; the right headed by the Mamponghene and the left by the Essumegyahene with the Mampong in charge of more than 15 paramountcies,” he disclosed.

He said the Essumegyahene automatically steps in the role of steering affairs in the absence of the right-wing head.

Nevertheless, he said, the Adansihene, Kotwere Bonsrah Afriyie II can lead when the Essumegyahene is unavailable.

According to him, the Mamponghene’s role placed him as the second-in-command in the Ashanti traditional hierarchy, often acting on behalf of the Asantehene on key matters of custom.

His silver stool is the second most powerful stool in the hierarchy of the Ashanti Kingdom, which makes him the second in charge in the absence of Asantehene.

Daasebere Osei Bonsu, who was born on December 31, 1939, passed on at age 86 and reigned for 26 years.

Until his ascension to the throne, he was known as Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie, a lawyer and an economist by profession who later served as Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Known for his diplomacy, and unwavering dedication, Daasebre Osei Bonsu’s legacy spans decades of service both to his people and to Ghana’s broader chieftaincy institution.

The news of his demise was formally communicated to the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace, reflecting the deeply rooted customs and reverence accorded royals in the Asante Kingdom.

His last public appearance was during the last Akwasidae held at Mampong where he rebuked some NDC supporters for planting tribal division in their protest against the selection of an MCE for the Mampong Municipal Assembly.

EXPLAINER: Ghana’s declining oil production

0

Crude oil production in Ghana keeps declining Crude oil production in Ghana keeps declining

Crude oil production has been a significant part of Ghana’s economic growth since the country first discovered oil in commercial quantities in 2007.

However, in recent years, Ghana has experienced a steady decline in production, raising concerns about the implications for national revenue and the broader economy.

Key oil fields in Ghana

Ghana’s oil production is primarily sourced from three major fields:

Jubilee Field – The first major offshore oil discovery in Ghana, and a leading contributor to national output.

TEN (Tweneboa, Enyenra, and Ntomme) Field – Another major offshore field supporting national oil production.

Sankofa Field – A newer development that also contributes to Ghana’s oil output.

These fields form the backbone of Ghana’s oil industry, but as they mature, their output is gradually declining.

A recent GhanaWeb Business article sheds light on how the persistent drop in crude oil production is negatively affecting Ghana’s petroleum revenues, and by extension, the Petroleum Holding Fund.

Why is production declining?

According to data from the Petroleum Commission and the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), Ghana’s oil production has declined steadily over the past four years.

The key reasons include:

Mature Fields: As oil fields age, they naturally experience a drop in output. Both Jubilee and TEN have been operational for years and are producing less than before.

Delayed New Developments: Ghana has yet to fully develop other offshore reserves, limiting the country’s ability to offset declining output from existing fields.

Technical and Investment Challenges: Offshore deepwater operations are capital-intensive and technically demanding, which can delay new exploration and production efforts.

How is petroleum revenue affected?

The impact of declining crude oil production on petroleum revenue is substantial.

Here’s how:

Lower Export Earnings: With reduced production, there’s less oil to sell, which directly affects government income from royalties, corporate taxes, and Ghana’s share of profit oil.

Budget Shortfalls: Petroleum revenue plays a crucial role in funding public expenditure, including education, health, and infrastructure. Declining revenue could force the government to borrow more or cut spending.

Weakened Stabilization Funds: Ghana sets aside oil earnings in funds like the Ghana Stabilization Fund to cushion against economic shocks. With falling revenue, these reserves may dwindle, weakening the country’s fiscal resilience.

Currency Pressure: Oil exports are a major source of foreign exchange. Reduced inflows can put pressure on the Ghanaian cedi, potentially leading to depreciation and inflation.

Investor Confidence and Growth Outlook: Declining output may signal operational and policy risks, deterring future investment and slowing the sector’s long-term growth.

The way forward

The decline in crude oil production highlights the urgent need for Ghana to diversify its economy and revenue sources.

Experts warn that without significant reforms, new investments in oil exploration, and a strategic shift toward renewable energy, the country could face prolonged revenue instability.

A broader approach may involve expanding Ghana’s mining sector and developing other productive industries to reduce overdependence on oil.

Conclusion

While crude oil production remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s economy, the sustained decline in output calls for bold, proactive measures. Stabilizing production, investing in new exploration, and broadening the national revenue base are essential steps toward long-term economic sustainability.

Government urged to intensify law enforcement to revive order in Ghana

0

By Naa Shormei Odonkor

Bantama (Ash), April 29, GNA – A Methodist Bishop has urged the government to take urgent steps to ensure the enforcement of the country’s laws to curb the spate of indiscipline and lawlessness in the country.

Right Reverend Sampson Obeng Adjei, Bishop of the Kumasi North Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana, pointed out that, the spate of lawlessness in the country required urgent attention.

He was speaking at the maiden Synod of the Diocese held at Bantama in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti region, under the theme, “Discipleship: Growing into Christian Maturity.”

“As a church, we cannot remain silent in the face of many troubling issues confronting our beloved country,” he stated.

Rt. Rev. Obeng Adjei listed illegal mining, commonly known as Galamsey, crime, indiscipline in the media and educational institutions, and the conflict in Bawku, as some of the pertinent issues confronting the country.

He said the Galamsey menace had dire consequences for both this generation and the generation yet unborn.

He noted that, the once-pristine rivers and fertile lands were being destroyed since the enforcement of the law was weak.

Additionally, the rise in armed robbery and other violent crimes in various parts of the country sowed the seed of fear and despair in citizens as it shook the security in the country.

Furthermore, Rt Rev Adjei indicated that, the rate of indiscipline in the media space was heart wrecking as most activities promoted indecency, lies, disrespect in the name of freedom of speech and division.

“The media, once seen as a tool for education and nation-building, is now, in some instances, being used to promote disrespect, profanity and division,” he said.

Additionally, Rt Rev Adjei expressed worry about the loss of moral guidance, breakdown of discipline and the erosion of parental and institutional control.

He said these were broader societal issues that all citizens and stakeholders must take up to address.

Rt Rev Adjei described the recent incident where a Senior High School student smuggled a firearm to school, resulting in the virtual loss of sight of another student as shocking and unacceptable.

Also, he mentioned the violent conflict in Bawku, which stemmed from chieftaincy disputes as one of the pressing issues which threatened the peace and security of the country.

Rt Rev Adjei said the conflict was a tragedy which continued to claim innocent lives and must not be allowed to fester.

He pleaded with all the factions to embrace dialogue and lay down arms as the President, John Dramani Mahama, tasked the king of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu (II), to resolve the conflict peacefully.

Rt Rev Adjei said the issues mentioned were not only political issues but issues that touched the soul of the nation.

“As Christians, we are called to be the salt and light.

Let us speak out pray earnestly and act justly.

Let us teach our children the fear of God.”

Central Tongu DCE outlines plans to address Assembly’s challenges

0

Adidome (V/R), April. 29, GNA – Mr. Dodzi Addison Mornyuie, the District Chief Executive of Central Tongu has underscored his commitment to addressing the challenges hindering the effective functioning and development of the District Assembly.

During a recent engagement with the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Mornyuie highlighted key areas requiring attention, including infrastructure, staff welfare, support for the youth and revenue mobilization.

Noting the suboptimal working conditions at the assembly, Mr. Mornyuie lamented the lack of adequate furniture, which often disrupts operations, particularly during conferences.

We lack furniture, and our officers must rely on those in the conference hall. So, whenever there is a meeting at the conference hall, our officers don’t have anything to sit on in their various Offices.”

To mitigate this, he pledged to prioritize the provision of essential office equipment and facilities to ensure a conducive working environment.

Mr. Mornyuie announced plans to construct a staff canteen, aimed at enhancing staff productivity by reducing the time spent on lunch breaks.

Additionally, he revealed intentions to develop a car park to safeguard the assembly’s vehicles from deterioration.

The DCE also emphasized the importance of providing distinctive identification for assembly staff, especially the Environmental Protection Agency and Town Council workers which would foster a sense of professionalism and aid their operations in the district.

On the revenue mobilization front, Mr. Mornyuie acknowledged the need for improvement and pledged to collaborate with assembly members to devise a comprehensive strategy for generating internal revenue.

Leveraging Central Tongu’s prominence in rice, cassava, and maize production, he expressed optimism about tapping into this potential to boost revenue generation.

Mr. Mornyuie also outlined plans to engage shop owners in the district, with a focus on sensitizing them about the importance of fulfilling their financial obligations to the assembly. He also highlighted the need to intensify revenue mobilization efforts in local markets.

Beyond these initiatives, Mr. Mornyuie revealed plans to attract investors to the district, with the aim of stimulating development and creating job opportunities for the youth.

This, he said, would help mitigate social vices and empower young people.

He also announced plans to implement apprenticeship programs, enabling youth to acquire skills and secure jobs.

The DCE also expressed its commitment to supporting sports development in the district. He assured that registered football teams under the Ghana Football Association would receive full support from the district assembly.

This initiative, he believes, would help harness the potential of the youth and promote development in the district.

Mahama launches ‘Mahama Cares’, appeals to corporate Ghana for support

0

The government has launched the Ghana Medical Trust Fund known as Mahama Cares, to provide financial support for people suffering from chronic diseases such as kidney failure, Cancer, and heart conditions.

The event took place at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

President John Dramani Mahama, while launching the Fund pleaded with the private sector to commit their corporate social responsibility to the Mahama Cares.

“I want to encourage corporate Ghana, businesses, the mines, the banks, and all the other companies, that this Ghana Medical Trust Fund, is coming to your clients who save their monies in your banks or do business with you. Some of them are even your own staff.

“So, as part of your Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), if you give anything, consider that you are giving to your own staff or customers. So, I would like to encourage all corporations in Ghana, both private and public, to at the end of the year, donate some portion of their annual CSR to Ghana Medical Fund because it is going to do a lot of good to the country,” he stated.

Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, said the initiative was long overdue citing the initiative as one that is designed to ensure fairness in healthcare access, particularly for those facing financial barriers to treatment.

In his opening remarks, the sector Minister revealed that a draft bill detailing the management framework of the fund will be presented to parliament.

“The draft bill for the Mahama Care is ready and will be submitted immediately Parliament resumes,” he stated.

He added: “Most importantly, the uncapping of the capping of the national health insurance firm has been removed. This move has unlocked substantial resources to ensure that a dedicated allocation of funds will now support the Mahama Care Programme.”

Agya Koo refused to attend AshantiFest due to guilty conscience

Kumawood actor, Agya Koo (L) and Michael Afranie (R) Kumawood actor, Agya Koo (L) and Michael Afranie (R)

Veteran Kumawood actor, Michael Afranie, has addressed speculations that his colleague Agya Koo was sidelined from the recent AshantiFest celebrations in Kumasi due to his NPP affiliations.

In a viral video on social media, Michael Afranie, during an interview, maintained that no one was excluded from the events.

He stated that no one holds any grudges against Agya Koo, and the actor could have joined his colleagues without needing a special invitation.

“Agya Koo didn’t need a special invitation since he was based in the Ashanti Region. If he had decided to join us to perform, he would have been welcomed. Nobody had any personal issue with him,” he said.

Michael Afranie speculated that Agya Koo’s absence might have been due to his own guilty conscience over comments he made while campaigning for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2024 elections.

“Maybe it was because of his guilty conscience. The things he said because of partisan politics… The fact that someone is from a different party than you doesn’t mean you can talk to that person anyhow.

“You should be careful how you speak to others. Today it might be someone else, but tomorrow it could be you,” he stated.

Vice Chancellors understand the system better – UCC lecturer

0

Dr Peter Anti-Partey, Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast Dr Peter Anti-Partey, Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast

A lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, Dr Peter Anti-Partey, has waded into the debate on the upward review of the retirement age for university staff from 60 years to 70 years.

Speaking on TV3 on April 28, 2025, Dr Anti-Partey indicated that the appeal by the Association of Vice Chancellors in Ghana has advantages and disadvantages.

He, however, noted that the vice chancellors, who are the administrators of tertiary educational institutions, may have cogent reasons for demanding for the review and extension.

“If you’re within the university circles, you’re allowed to apply for an extension after you retire and that is something made available to professors. So, I think what the vice chancellors are thinking now is to extend it to all staff – who have stayed in the university over the period before they got to their retirement – so that you don’t have to necessarily be a professor before you can apply for an extension or for a contract for 5 years and more.

“… It has its advantages and disadvantages but of course – they’re the administrators of the universities and they understand the advantages of this move,” he said.

Again, Dr Anti-Partey indicated that a broader stakeholder consultation was necessary to streamline the call for review of the retirement age.

“A possible disadvantage is that it could deny young people of spaces in the university. We need to think through it carefully to ensure that we don’t weed out experienced persons and at the same time ensure that recruitment of young staff in the university is not compromised,” he added.

Background

The government issued a directive on April 2, 2025, to suspend all post-retirement contracts in public sector institutions.

“The grant of post-retirement contract appointments to retired public service staff has been suspended with immediate effect,” the statement signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, stated.

However, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced an exception for the academic community from the directive to suspend post-retirement contracts on April 25, 2025.

In his estimation, their expertise would still be relevant to the education sector and hence could be retained beyond their retirement.

“About a month ago, the president issued a suspension of post-retirement contract renewal. My understanding was that it created some fear and panic. Let me assure you that it does not affect persons in academia. You are entitled to that exemption that recognize that you are rare breed in our country. Therefore, this post contract beyond sixty years does not affect members of academia in the country,” he assured.

Recently, the vice chancellors Ghana called on the government to review and extend the retirement age for university lecturers from 60 to 70 years, citing the need to retain experienced academics and strengthen the country’s higher education system.

Speaking at a forum, the Executive Secretary of the group, Dr Sena Kpeglo Freiku, argued that lecturers remain invaluable assets whose contribution often matures with age.

“Universities form part of a global knowledge economy. The university professor is more like the older, the better. What we are proposing is that in order to ensure the long-term capacity of universities and also to promote social autonomy, if the committee could consider maybe extending the retirement age for the academics, not the professionals, to 65 years, with a possibility of about 70,” he said.

Hoteliers want enabling environment to thrive

0

The President of the Hotels Association of Ghana (HAG), Dr Edward Ackah Nyamike (Jnr), has called on the government to provide a conducive environment for the hotel industry to thrive, and contribute meaningfully to tourism promotion in the country.

The hospitality industry, he said, played vital roles in the promotion of tourism, and as a matter of urgency the government should create conditions, such as reduction in tariffs to help growth the industry.

The President of the HAG made the call during a health walk in Ho last Friday, as part of a year-long activities marking the 50th anniversary celebration of the Association on the theme: ‘50 Years of Advocacy, Perseverance and Impacting Ghana’s Tourism and Hospitality Industry.’

Dr Nyamike also stressed that the hospitality industry created over 80,000 direct and indirect jobs, mobilising revenue through taxes, levies and foreign exchange for national development.

He mentioned that the need for the government to pay attention to the hotel industry, which was at the centre of tourism promotion in the country, adding that the high cost involved in hotel management and high tariffs remained challenge to hotel operations in the country.

The President of the Association also urged the government to improve on tourism sites, provide good road networks, improved food production, which would lead to the reduction in the cost of food in the market since hotel management depended largely on food, urging hotel managements to also enhance the quality of service to their clients.

The Deputy Volta Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Mr Sulemana Amadu, commended hotel operators for their continuous contribution to the promotion of the tourism industry of the country, and urged hotel managers to adhere to standard practices that will enable them to meet the expectations of their clients.

Mr Amadu further observed that as a result of the many taxes and levies hotel managers pays leads to some hotels not employing highly qualified staff because they would not be able to pay them, and they depended on non-professionals in their activities.

According to the Deputy Director, his outfit had regular training programmes for the staff of hotel operators in the Volta Region, to enable them to operate within acceptable international standards to meet the demands of their clients.

The Volta Regional Chairman of the Association, Henry Ampah Johnson, said the biggest threat to the hotel industry in the region was the “high” taxes the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) imposed on members of the Association, even though activities of hotels only involved wastewater that was properly disposed of without affecting the environment.

The 1,500 members of the HAG, lined up a-year-long anniversary celebration programme, including holding of symposium on the theme of the anniversary, unveiling of the anniversary cloth, and awarding members who distinguished themselves, while the celebration would be held in January 2026.

NPP has the right to freely communicate its achievements – Political analyst

0

Political analyst, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante has welcomed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to proactively communicate its achievements, describing the move as “a good call” and “long overdue.”

According to Dr Asah-Asante, it is the fundamental objective of any political party to win power and form the next government — a goal that requires deliberate engagement with the public to build support.

“It is a good call, because every political party — your duty or aim is to win power and form the next government,” he said.

He added “You do that with numbers, so you need to move in to do certain things that will attract the attention of the public in order to win souls.”

Speaking on the JoyNews News Desk Show on Tuesday, April 29, he argued that the NPP has played a significant role in Ghana’s political development and that it is time the party made its contributions widely known.

“Telling their story is long overdue,” he said. “There is a lot in the political history of this country which the NPP has, and they have to make it abundantly clear to people — for people to know how far they have come.”

Dr Asah-Asante further noted that turning this communication into a structured policy could deepen political understanding within the party and enhance its public appeal.

“So, if you make it a policy that you want to now articulate your views relative to your achievements, then the knowledge within the party deepens and then people become attracted to your message — and that is the beginning of winning souls for the party,” he added.

In a media interview ahead of the re-launch of the National Sanitation Day on May 3,  Mr Nartey-Tokoli, who leads one of the top brands in waste segregation and management, emphasised the importance of solid waste segregation and called for increased awareness among the citizens.

He believed that proper waste management was the foundation for building a commercially viable recycling industry.

“Solid waste segregation at the source of generation is the pre-requisite to providing quality feedstock to engender the commercial viability of recycled products,” he added.

Mr Nartey-Tokoli explained that once high-quality feedstock was available, the circular economy would naturally take over, thus allowing consumers to access affordable, and value-for-money recycled products.

Highlighting the economic benefits, Mr Nartey-Tokoli noted that conventional haulage costs could be reduced by as much as 60%, while landfill costs could be reduced up to 80% due to the diversion of segregated waste.

Additionally, landfill lifespans could be extended more than four-fold as a result of proper waste management practices, he added.

Beyond cost savings, Mr Nartey-Tokoli pointed out that waste collection companies could also generate additional income by selling processed feedstock or secondary materials.

“Once segregated waste gains value, a new industry will be created, the circular economy,” he said, noting that it could lead to a major paradigm shift in the funding and sustainability of waste management systems in Ghana.

I have feelings for my step-dad and I can’t seem to get over him

0

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’m 22 years old, turning 23 next month and my step-dad is in his late 40s. My step-dad and my mother are no longer together, they’ve already gone their separate ways. He is rich and good looking gentleman.

These feelings became stronger when he kissed and sucked my tongue.

That moment changed everything for me. He likes to flirt with me a lot, though he hasn’t openly confessed his feelings but I can tell he likes me in some way.

Maybe it’s just for sex, but his actions and advances have made me fall in love with him.

I try to avoid going to his house, but my mom stills sends me over every weekend to check on him and the kids.

I’ve told my mother that I don’t like going there but she doesn’t understand.

Being around him makes everything harder for me because I get jealous when I see him with other women.

He is a ladies’ man and often brings different women home and sometimes, I can hear them moaning in the other room.

It affects me in ways I don’t know how to explain.

I get aroused when I think about him and I don’t like these feelings. When he touches me in ways that I feel too intimate, it confuses me even more. We’ve made out many times and it’s been good all the time.

I don’t know if he truly likes me or if it’s just about sex for him.

Either ways, I’ve developed deep feelings that I don’t know how to control.

I have no one to talk to about this and I’m too shy to discuss it openly.

Please don’t judge me. I just need guidance on what to do and how to manage these feelings.

Aside him making me good in bed, he also spoils me with money and every other things.

Lately, he calls me at night and takes me out a lot.

I want to discuss this with my mother, but he asked me to keep it a secret and he will give me everything I want.

I’m confused and I don’t know what to do. I need your advice.

Prioritise mental health support to enhance productivity

Prof Michael Ayamga-Adongo, Acting Deputy CEO of EPA (Operations) Prof Michael Ayamga-Adongo, Acting Deputy CEO of EPA (Operations)

The Acting Deputy CEO (Operations) of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Prof Michael Ayamga-Adongo, has called on institutions to prioritise mental health support.

According to Prof Ayamga-Adongo, mental health affects everyone, and workplaces must take proactive steps to address it.

“We are all mad at a certain degree. You can go to work and one pressure can get you to snap. The guidance and counselling unit at the work place can help you cool off in order to continue with productivity,” he said.

He emphasised that institutions should include mental health in their health insurance coverage for staff and also establish dedicated guidance and counselling units in their offices.

Prof Ayamga-Adongo stressed that prioritising mental health is both a moral obligation and a strategic business decision, as a mentally-healthy workforce is more productive and capable of driving organisational success.

“Mental health in the workplace has far-reaching implications for society and the global economy. Prioritising mental health is not merely a moral obligation; it is a strategic business decision. A mentally-healthy workforce is a productive one, capable of driving great organisational success,” he indicated.

He said this on the JoyNews AM Show monitored by GhanaWeb on April 29, 2025, while urging work organisations to take concrete steps to support their employees’ mental well-being, noting that mental health awareness should be a year-round effort.

The Vice President of Ghana, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, is expected to launch the Mental Health Awareness Month, a crucial initiative aimed at promoting mental well-being across Ghana, on Wednesday, April 30.

ECOWAS to establish common platform to advancing peace and security in sub-region

0

By Godwill Arthur-Mensah/Ebenezer Annan

Accra, April 29, GNA–Representatives of the National Peace Councils and Committees within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are meeting in Accra to plan towards forming a common regional platform to advancing peace and security in the sub-region.

This has become necessary following recurring violent extremism and increasing political instability within the sub-region in recent years.

Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger officially withdrew from ECOWAS in January 2025 due to military takeovers and upsurge in extremist activities in those countries.

Speaking during the opening session of a three-day ECOWAS Regional Meeting on Peace and Mediation in Accra, Dr George Amoh, the Executive Secretary, Ghana’s National Peace Council, said the meeting would provide an opportunity for ECOWAS member states to share ideas and experiences towards advancing peace and security in the sub-region.

The meeting, he said, would also help in strengthening peace infrastructures in ECOWAS member states to ensure timely resolution of local conflicts, advancing good governance practices and entrenching democratic principles in the sub-region.

Dr Amoh observed that peace and security were essential tools for promoting socio-economic development and underscored the need for member states to have strategic frameworks to deal with local conflict situations before escalating into national crises.

Ms Anna Lixi, Head of Governance and Security, European Union Delegation in Ghana, said the ECOWAS’ Peace, Security and Governance Project was in line with the European Union’s (EU) strategic framework to prevent conflicts in Africa.

She pledged the EU’s commitment to providing logistical and technical support to peace councils in ECOWAS member states to curb local conflicts.

“EU’s partnership with ECOWAS demonstrates our commitment to peacebuilding and part of wider efforts to supporting Africa-led solution to attaining national and regional peace and security,” she said.

It is expected that at the end of the three-day meeting, the participants would issue a communique on the consensus reached on establishing a common regional platform in preventing conflicts in the sub-region.

Standard Chartered opens applications for 5th women in tech programme

0

Standard Chartered Bank, in partnership with Village Capital, has launched the call for applications for the fifth cohort of its Futuremakers Women in Tech Accelerator (FWIT).

The initiative aims to support women-owned and women-led, tech-enabled businesses in Ghana’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

This year’s programme will be implemented by the Ghana Climate Innovation Centre (GCIC) at Ashesi University, with funding from the Standard Chartered Foundation. It is part of the bank’s broader mission to empower female entrepreneurs with the skills, tools, and funding needed to drive sustainable growth and innovation in Ghana’s tech sector.

Despite women contributing significantly to Ghana’s economy, owning 34% of formal SMEs (World Bank, 2023) and 44% of micro-enterprises (Ghana Statistical Service, 2021), many still face challenges such as limited access to finance, digital skills gaps, and regulatory barriers. The FWIT programme seeks to address these issues by equipping participants with business development, leadership, and digital innovation skills.

“This year’s cohort selection will place a renewed emphasis on inclusion, with preference given to women living with disabilities and those from underserved communities.  Our Women in Tech incubator cultivates a generation of innovators, creating leaders who will inspire others to recognise their potential for impact.” said Mansa Nettey, Chief Executive of Standard Chartered Ghana Plc.

Participants will undergo a rigorous incubation process, culminating in a pitch and demo day. The top five finalists will each receive $10,000 (in Ghana cedi equivalent) as equity-free grants to scale their ventures.

Since its inception, the programme has supported 74 women-led businesses across sectors such as agriculture, fashion, renewable energy, health, education, and sustainability. Of these, 21 have received a total of $210,000 in grants, highlighting the programme’s role in fostering impactful, scalable innovation led by women.

Applications for Cohort 5 are now open, reaffirming Standard Chartered’s commitment to inclusive economic growth and gender empowerment in Ghana.

‘Abort thank you tour and deal with the basics’ – Political analyst tells NPP

0

Political analyst, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to suspend its current activities and return to the drawing board, citing unresolved internal conflicts that threaten party cohesion and grassroots mobilisation.

Speaking on the JoyNews News Desk on Tuesday, April 29, Dr Asah-Asante stressed the urgent need for the party to re-evaluate its internal dynamics before moving forward with its broader political agenda.

“I believe they have to abort the whole programme and then get to the drawing board, get to the basis and get the basis right,” he said.

“Let them set up a body that will look out wholly [for] the conflicts that exist within the party [and] try and deal with that,” he continued.

According to Dr Asah-Asante, internal divisions within the party, if left unaddressed, could severely undermine its chances in future elections.

He warned that such issues often embolden discontented members to openly confront party leadership, thereby destabilising internal structures and weakening public perception.

“Once you deal with that, you will be inundated with a lot of calls to get the grassroots energised,” he noted.

He further noted that internal discontent within the Party (NPP) is beginning to surface publicly, as some bold party members openly challenge the leadership.

“But once there are problems there, those who are bold will come and confront the leadership — and as we are seeing, it’s playing out now,” he said.

He urged the NPP leadership to take a critical and measured approach to the situation, recommending a strategic pause and internal review as necessary first steps towards restoring unity and focus.

“I believe they have to take a critical look at this and then be measured in this regard,” he concluded.

Charles Bissue replies OSP on criminal charges

0

Former Secretary of the defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), Charles Bissue, has reiterated his innocence over 15 criminal charges levelled against him and his alleged accomplice, Andy Thomas Owusu, for corruption and abuse of public office.

“For the record, I categorically assert that I have always acted in full compliance with
both the legal and ethical obligations of the office I held and the laws of the Republic
of Ghana. Any suggestion of misconduct is baseless and will be vigorously challenged
through due process,” Mr Bissue responded barely 24 hours after the case was filed in court, via a press release.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) filed the criminal charges on April 28, in relation to the
widely publicised ‘Galamsey Fraud’ investigation, as documented in the 2019 Tiger
Eye P.I. report.

Even though Mr Bissue was initially cleared by the previous government, the OSP reopened the case and has proceeded with criminal prosecutions.

The charges, filed at the High Court (Criminal Division) in Accra, allege that between January and February 2019, Mr Bissue, while serving as IMCIM Secretary, corruptly accepted bribes totalling GHC35,000 from one Benjamin Adjapong, directly and through Owusu, to fast-track the renewal of an expired mining licence for ORR Resources Enterprise without proper documentation.

In return, Bissue allegedly issued fraudulent permits and stickers declaring ORR Resources compliant with mining laws.

Mr Bissue, who is preparing to defend himself in court, says, “I welcome the OSP’s decision to proceed with this case after more than five years of deliberation. To ensure transparency and fairness, I expect the OSP to submit to the court a complete, unedited, and unaltered version of the video documentary
referenced in these proceedings. Ghanaians deserve access to the unvarnished truth
and factual evidence, free from distortion or misdirection by external narratives or
selective interpretations”.

The former presidential staffer under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government added: “I remain fully committed to cooperating with the proceedings and trust that the courts will adjudicate this matter impartially and conclusively.”

He believes the timing of the prosecution, “occurring under a different government than the one
in which I previously served, shows the importance of impartial judicial proceedings”.

“It is my sincere hope that this process will allow all parties an equitable opportunity
to present evidence and that the facts will be evaluated fairly, without bias.
Above all, I firmly believe that the pursuit of truth and justice must prevail. I urge
the public to respect the legal process and refrain from premature judgments. The
people of Ghana deserve transparency, accountability, and a resolution rooted in the
rule of law,” he stressed.

The IMCIM, established in 2017 to combat illegal mining (galamsey), was dissolved in 2021 after corruption scandals, including Bissue’s alleged involvement in misappropriating excavators and gold nuggets.

In November 2024, the Human Rights Court dismissed the final in a series of suits filed by Charles Bissue aimed at preventing the Office of the Special Prosecutor from arresting, investigating, or charging him.

Mr Bissue had previously obtained a 10-day ex parte injunction restraining the OSP from arresting him, alleging that the warrant issued was unlawfully procured and intended to harass him.

He also sought a declaration that a notice marking him as wanted was void.

In its judgment, the court found Bissue’s claims entirely unfounded, stating there was no evidence to support his allegations. The central question was whether an arrest warrant had indeed been issued by the Kaneshie District Court for OSP against Bissue.

The court ruled that it was Bissue’s responsibility to provide proof of such a warrant, which he failed to do.

The judge concluded that no warrant had been issued and dismissed the claim as a figment of the imagination of Bissue and awarded costs of GHC10,000 against him.

This ruling cleared the path for the OSP to continue its investigations into Mr Bissue’s involvement with the defunct IMCIM and, in another separate case, pursue charges related to allegations of corruption as depicted in the Tiger Eye P.I. documentary Galamsey Fraud Part 1.

President Mahama has no plans to amend constitution for a third term – Edudzi replies Justin Kodua

0

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority, Edudzi Tameklo Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority, Edudzi Tameklo

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority, Edudzi Tameklo, has rejected claims that President John Dramani Mahama intends to amend Ghana’s 1992 Constitution to run for a third term.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, Edudzi Tameklo emphasised President Mahama’s deep respect for the constitution and his fidelity to it.

“President John Dramani Mahama has demonstrated deep respect for the rule of law and even greater fidelity to the 1992 Constitution. President Mahama has no plans to amend the constitution to allow for a third term,” he wrote.

Recounting President Mahama’s political journey, Edudzi, who is also a legal practitioner, described as unfortunate the attempt by the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, to link the ongoing process for the removal of the Chief Justice to a supposed agenda by the president to seek a third term in office.

“We are talking about a man whom God has blessed and given a unique opportunity and experience that no other person in Ghana currently possesses. From the position of deputy minister and subsequently minister, to the position of Member of Parliament representing the great people of Bole Bamboi for 12 years. He became the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, won a presidential election, and served as the elected resident from 2013 to 2016. He lost an election and went into opposition for 8 years, learning lessons of loyalty and betrayal. He emerged from this deep sense of reflection and humility to win an unprecedented landslide, marking a comeback.

“In the next 100 years in the life of Ghana, only 25 people can become president of this country. That places President Mahama among the few who have served as president. The claim by the General Secretary of the NPP, who led the party into opposition, that President Mahama has plans to amend the constitution to allow for a third term in office, as the reason for the impeachment process against the suspended Chief Justice, is most unfortunate,” he stated.

Edudzi, who also serves as the Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress, urged the public to ignore the claim by the NPP General Secretary, noting that no correlation exists between the process for the removal of the Chief Justice and the ongoing constitutional amendment process.

“The process to amend the constitution has little to do with the Chief Justice. There is no nexus. It is a calculated, sinister attempt to court public disaffection for President Mahama. I have no doubt that President Mahama appreciates the great honor bestowed upon him by the good people of Ghana for serving in those various capacities. Ghanaians must ignore and treat with contempt the unfounded claims by Justin Kodua. President Mahama has given a clear indication of what he intends to do upon retirement: go into farming and help grow a new crop of giants in agribusiness,” he stated.

Three Indian nationals arrested by GoldBod in smuggling syndicate bust

0

The three Indian nationals arrested for smuggling gold with officials of the GoldBod The three Indian nationals arrested for smuggling gold with officials of the GoldBod

Three (3) suspected gold smugglers have been arrested by the GoldBod security taskforce.

The three suspects, Goutam Katriya, 35, Miraj Sarvaych, 22, Manash Damani, 42, are Indian nationals who are in the business of trading gold in Kumasi and Accra for Unique MM, a company allegedly owned by one Musah Salifu.

The suspects were arrested at their private residence around Atinga Junction in Kumasi, which has been converted into a gold trading center on April 28, 2025.

The arrest was based on a tip off from a patriotic whistle blower that the suspects were purchasing gold at “black market” rate for the purpose of smuggling.

The suspects were arraigned before the Achimota Circuit court on April 28, 2025, and remanded into custody for a period of two (2) weeks.

At a press conference in Accra, the Director of Investigations at National Security, Chief Superintendent Osman Alhassan, disclosed that an amount of 1.9 million cedis, 4,500 rupees, 4.363 kilograms of gold, two counting machines, a CCTV recorder and an Indian passport were found in the possession of the suspects.

Preliminary investigations by National Security so far revealed, that none of the three suspects possess a valid license that allows them to purchase or deal in gold in the country.

The suspects who been dealing in gold in Ghana for over a decade, have not been able to adduce any residence permit or work permit or tax payment records on their business operations.

Additionally, it’s been revealed that Musah Salifu, a Ghanaian, who is alleged to be the sole shareholder of the Unique MM, is only a front for Goutam Katriya, the real beneficial owner and alter ego of the company.

Chief Superintendent Osman Alhassan cautioned both Ghanaians and foreign nationals against violating the provisions of the Ghana Gold Board Act and other laws governing the gold trading sector of the country.

“This arrest is only the beginning of GoldBod’s ruthless war against illegal gold trading and gold smuggling. We know that the arrested suspects smuggle gold through unapproved border points into India. This has serious negative consequences for the Ghanaian economy. We are still gathering intelligence on several illegal gold traders and smugglers. And very soon, we shall take necessary action.” he said.

The suspects are to remain in NIB custody until May 12, 2025, when they are expected to reappear before the court.

In a related matter, the GoldBod has reiterated its directive for all foreigners in the gold trading sector to exit the market by 30th April, 2025.

All persons dealing in gold have also been directed to trade in Ghana cedis and at the Bank of Ghana Reference Rate.

A breach of these directive, shall constitute a punishable offense under the GoldBod Act, 2025 (ACT 1140).

This was contained in a press release issued by the GoldBod dated April 23, 2025.
