Governs Agbodza not happy with the Minority Walkout

0

The Member of Parliament for Adaklu Governs Kwame Agbodza has taken a swipe at the Minority for walking out after the Speaker Rt. Hon Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin admonished that it is wrong to call for a bye-election when the electoral Commission has not given indications of that.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga raised the issue on the floor of the House for guidance since he has received calls asking when the bye-election in Akwatia would take place because the NPP on social media, the wife of the late MPs posters are already out.

Trump diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency following leg swelling – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

US President Donald Trump has been examined for swelling in his legs and has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, the White House announced Thursday, July 17.

Trump, 79, underwent a “comprehensive examination, including diagnostic vascular studies” with the White House Medical Unit, press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, reading a note from the president’s physician, Capt. Sean Barbabella.

Barbabella’s letter, which was later released by the White House, states that “bilateral lower extremity venous Doppler ultrasounds were performed and revealed chronic venous insufficiency, a benign and common condition, particularly in individuals over the age of 70.”

The examination came after Trump had “noted mild swelling in his lower legs” over recent weeks, Leavitt said.

“Importantly, there was no evidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or arterial disease” and Trump’s lab testing was all “within normal limits,” according to the letter. Trump also underwent an echocardiogram. “No signs of heart failure, renal impairment, or systemic illness were identified,” Barbabella wrote.

Chronic venous insufficiency is a condition in which valves inside certain veins don’t work the way they should, which can allow blood to pool or collect in the veins. About 150,000 people are diagnosed with it each year, and the risk goes up with age. Symptoms can include swelling in the lower legs or ankles, aching or cramping in the legs, varicose veins, pain or skin changes. Treatment may involve medication or, in later stages, medical procedures.

“It’s basically not alarming information, and it’s not surprising,” Dr. Jeremy Faust, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School, told CNN.

“This is a pretty normal part of aging, and especially for someone in the overweight to obese category, which is where the president has always been. But the bigger concern … is that symptoms like this do need to be evaluated for more serious conditions, and that is what happened.”

Chronic venous insufficiency can be related to conditions like increased pressure from the heart or sleep apnea, cardiologist Dr. Bernard Ashby told CNN.

“Even though he’s diagnosed with a benign condition, venous insufficiency, by itself doesn’t necessarily mean it’s benign. The question is, what’s causing the venous insufficiency? And so I would want to know whether or not he has any evidence of, again, increased pressures in the heart or increased pressures in the lungs, which can be contributing to that, and if so, what is the primary cause of that?”

Trump’s doctors were “covering all their bases” by screening him for heart failure, increased pressure and other conditions, he said.

Age, obesity and inactivity can all lead to the condition. “If a person is older, a person is overweight, a person is not engaging in regular physical activity or exercise, if a person is sitting or standing for prolonged amounts of time, you can get chronic venous insufficiency,” Dr. Chris Pernell told CNN.

“And while it is not life-threatening, it can be debilitating,” she added.

Leavitt later added that the president was experiencing “no discomfort.”

The press secretary also addressed bruising that has appeared on the back of the president’s hand, which she attributed to his “frequent handshaking,” plus his use of aspirin.

“This is consistent with minor soft tissue irritation from frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin, which is taken as part of a standard cardiovascular prevention regimen,” Barbabella’s letter says.

The letter concludes that “President Trump remains in excellent health.”

Trump will become the nation’s oldest president during his second term.

Wimbledon attracts record digital audience of 69.3 million to BBC

0

Wimbledon attracted a record-breaking 69.3 million digital video views for BBC Sport over the two-week competition.

Audiences viewed the matches through BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and the BBC Sport app.

It is a considerable increase from the 50.1 million online requests in 2024, which had previously dropped from 54.3 million in 2023.

The men’s singles final between rivals Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner had a peak TV and online audience of 8.8 million, with nearly all – 8.3 million – watching on BBC One.

In the women’s final, 4.1 million tuned into BBC One to watch Iga Swiatek win her first Wimbledon title with a commanding victory over Amanda Anisimova.

Alex Kay-Jelski, director of BBC Sport, said: “This year’s record-breaking digital figures for Wimbledon are testament to the huge appeal of the sport among audiences and the power of digital innovation to bring both new and existing fans closer to the action than ever before.

“The way people are following Wimbledon is changing, but that is exciting for us as we look to tell the best stories in different ways.”

Watch as NPP’s Paul Yandoh shares ‘hilarious’ cultural shock in Accra during Wontumi’s arrest

0

The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh, recently shared hilarious cultural shocks he experienced on his visit to Accra, during the detention of Chairman Wontumi by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Commenting on his experience in Ghana’s capital city, Accra, which was in sharp contrast to what he is used to in Kumasi, the second largest city in Ghana, Yandoh’s comments on what he termed as cultural shocks have since gone viral on social media.

In an interview on Lawson TV dated July 16, 2025, Yandoh said, “I’ve been to Accra before, but this trip was different due to the circumstances. We intended to make a return journey, so I didn’t prepare adequately. Unfortunately, because EOCO held Wontumi beyond what we anticipated, we had to stay for days. Initially, I thought I could sleep in my car right in front of the EOCO building. However, spending a night in a car isn’t easy. After two days of sleeping in my car, I found it difficult to stretch my legs and arms. The worst part was dealing with mosquitoes that disrupted my sleep.”

Yandoh touched on several cultural differences that surprised him during his short trip to Accra, including the fast-paced lifestyle in Accra, the fashion choices, and the unique ways people greet one another.

He humorously noted in a post on X by Sikaofficial on July 16, 2025, “The mosquitoes in Accra are different. They knock on your car windows to get in. As EOCO is after your life, mosquitoes are also after you. It’s a terrible experience. Even the food available in Accra is limited. If it’s not waakye, then it’s kenkey. And the kenkey doesn’t come with okro soup—it’s just served with spicy pepper. In Kumasi, kenkey typically comes with okro, making it much more enjoyable, but in Accra, I haven’t encountered that. What kind of food are the people in Accra eating? The kenkey is hot, and so is the pepper; if that enters your head, you can imagine what will happen.”

“The way people eat in Accra is quite peculiar. There are no places to go for your preferred dishes like there are in Kumasi. Living in Accra isn’t easy. I spent almost seven days there. I’ve been with Chairman Wontumi this entire time, and I’ve come to believe that when you meet a good person in your life, you should hold onto them. Wontumi is a good person,” he added.

Yandoh also chuckled as he recounted how overwhelmed he was by the “endless traffic jams” and the “fierce competition” for everything from taxis to street food.

NPP Must Rein In Abronye Before He Tears NPP Apart – Former MCE ‘s Appeal

Mustapha Hamid denies involvement in GHS280m extortion allegations – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Lawyers for Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, former Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), have strongly denied his involvement in an alleged GHS280 million extortion and money laundering scheme.

The response comes after a press release from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), which named Dr. Abdul-Hamid among seven individuals and three companies charged in connection with the scheme, said to have been perpetrated within the NPA.

In a statement issued by his legal team on Thursday, July 17, Dr. Abdul-Hamid firmly refuted the allegations, emphasizing that he has not been formally charged or served with any charge sheet.

“Our client denies all the allegations against him contained in the said publication and press release. He is ready to contest all the allegations in court and defend his good name,” the statement read.

The lawyers recalled that back in February 2025, the OSP had first accused Dr. Abdul-Hamid of embezzling GHS1.3 billion from the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund (UPPF). Following that claim, he issued a letter on February 17, 2025, demanding a retraction—one that the OSP never provided.

Subsequently, Dr. Abdul-Hamid was invited by the OSP for questioning on February 25, 2025, regarding alleged mismanagement of the UPPF and procurement breaches. However, his legal team says the accusations have since shifted significantly, from embezzlement and procurement infractions to the latest claims of extortion and money laundering. The amount involved has also been revised downward from GHS1.3 billion to GHS280 million.

The OSP now alleges that Dr. Abdul-Hamid personally received GHS24 million from the amount purportedly extorted from oil marketing companies and petroleum transporters.

But his lawyers have strongly dismissed the allegation:

“Our client categorically denies initiating or being involved in any extortion scheme, either directly or indirectly. He further denies receiving any personal benefit from any such alleged extortion.”

The legal team further criticized what they described as a shifting and inconsistent narrative from the OSP and reiterated Dr. Abdul-Hamid’s readiness to clear his name through legal processes.

The Greater Accra Police Command has given assurance that it will soon effect arrest of the perpetrators of the recent electoral violence witnessed at Ablekuma North during the parliamentary elections re-run.

This, according to the police, followed a careful review and analysis of several videos that captured the incidents at the polling stations to identify all persons involved.

A statement issued by the head of the Public Affairs Unit of the command, Superintendent Juliana Obeng disclosed that the command has gathered credible leads that would enable the command to effect arrest soon.

“The Accra Regional Police Command wishes to update the public in relation to violent incidents and assaults recorded during the Ablekuma North Parliamentary re-run held on Friday, 11th July 2025”. The statement read in part.

According to Supt Obeng, the command has significantly progressed to obtain statements from complainants and witnesses to aid in the ongoing investigations.

Meanwhile, the victims involved in the incidents have been issued with Police Medical Report Forms.

“The Accra Regional Police Command reiterates its commitment to ensuring that all persons responsible for acts of violence, intimidation, or misconduct during the elections will be held accountable under the law”. The statement said.

Isolated cases of brutal violence were witnessed during the re-run of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency.

In the process, Mavis Hawa Koomson became the worse victim as thugs alleged to be affiliated to the ruling NDC party physically assaulted at the Odokor Methodist Polling Station.

The attack on the former Member of Parliament for Awutu-Senya-East at the polling station continues to engender date and concerns especially in parliament.

Two NPP members seek court injunction against Delegates Conference – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Two members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Shamsudeen Iddrisu and Boateng Kwadwo, have filed a motion for an interlocutory injunction at the High Court in Accra, seeking to stop the party’s upcoming Extraordinary National Delegates Conference.

The motion, filed on July 14, 2025, through their legal counsel, Agyemang Duah of CharisBrit Legal Consult, requests that the court restrain the NPP from holding the scheduled conference at the University of Ghana Stadium from July 18 to 20, 2025.

The plaintiffs argue that the conference should be halted pending the final determination of a substantive legal challenge they have brought against the party.

In court documents seen by this reporter, the plaintiffs claim that the organization of the conference is in breach of certain party procedures and could prejudice the outcome of the ongoing case. They are, therefore, asking the court to preserve the status quo until the legal issues raised are addressed.

The application, filed under Order 25 of C.I. 47, also asks the court to grant any further orders it deems necessary to ensure fairness and justice in the matter.

As of the time of filing this report, the NPP had not issued an official response to the injunction application.

The Extraordinary Delegates Conference is a major event on the NPP’s political calendar, typically used to deliberate on key party matters and make high-level decisions. Any disruption could have significant implications for the party’s internal dynamics, especially with the 2028 elections on the horizon.

ISD, GNA clean office space to start Civil Service Week

0

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni, GNA

Accra, July 17, GNA  – Staff of the Information Services Department (ISD) and the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Thursday undertook a clean-up exercise within their shared office complex and its surroundings in Accra as part of activities to mark the 2025 Civil Service Week celebration.

The initiative forms part of a collaborative effort between the two communication agencies to enhance the aesthetic appeal and hygiene of their working environment.

The week-long celebration is being held on the theme: “Adapting to Automation, Artificial Intelligence and Governance: The Civil Service in Contemporary Ghana.”

It seeks to spotlight the crucial role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in improving the efficiency and responsiveness of Ghana’s public service.

Ms Bridget Mensah, Head of the Access to Information Division, ISD, and Chairperson of the in-house planning committee for the celebration, underscored the significance of the exercise.

“The whole celebration was launched yesterday, and some of the activities lined up include this clean-up exercise. Since we are here in the same building with the GNA, we thought it wise to partner with them, and it has been a great success,” she said.

She emphasised the long-term impact of the activity, noting that it targeted areas often overlooked during routine cleaning, thereby improving the overall cleanliness of the premises.

Ms Mensah urged all civil servants to take active part in the celebration, encouraging broad participation across all public institutions.

The Civil Service Week celebration, sponsored by the Government, features a wide range of activities, including an interfaith thanksgiving service and soccer competition on Friday, July 18.

Other planned events include a policy fair from July 21 to 24, health screenings, cultural exhibitions, and cooking competitions.

A keynote lecture on: “Civil Service Transformation” will be held on Monday, July 22.

The celebration will climax with an awards ceremony at the Alisa Hotel on Thursday, July 25, to honour outstanding civil servants.

The Chief of Staff, Mr Julius Debrah, is expected to grace the occasion as the Guest of Honour.

Watch as police officer is asked to choose between love and duty during routine stop

The girl and the police officer during the routine checks The girl and the police officer during the routine checks

During a routine vehicle stop, a police officer unexpectedly found himself caught between love and duty when he expressed interest in a female occupant of the car.

The woman, however, made it clear she was not fond of policemen and told the officer she would only consider being with him if he quit his job.

She boldly asked him to choose between his career and a relationship with her. When the officer questioned how they would survive without his salary, she responded, “I can take care of us.”

Still in disbelief, the officer asked what he would be doing at home. The woman replied, “You’ll be a stay-at-home husband,” which he quickly rejected, saying he couldn’t accept that role.

Trying to persuade him further, the woman’s friend joined the conversation, saying she had influential connections and could help him find a role in any department he desired.

“She’s a big woman who knows people and can make things happen for you,” the friend added.

The woman then told him, “Just leave the police for the rest.”

Her friend concluded by saying the officer looked like someone who deserved to enjoy life because “life is too short.”

Parliament suspends consideration of Scholarships Authority Bill pending CSOs consultation

0

Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu

The Parliament of Ghana has suspended consideration of the Ghana Scholarships Authority Bill, 2025, to allow for further consultations with stakeholders.

The decision was on the request of the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during parliamentary proceedings on Thursday, July 17, 2025.

The minister informed the House that the suspension was necessary to address concerns raised by the Coalition of Civil Society Groups in Education.

“Mr Speaker, as I indicated earlier, the Office of the President related to me some concerns that have been communicated, and therefore Mr Speaker, I sought the chairman’s indulgence if we can stay further consideration as I do the consultation. As I indicated, on Tuesday we will engage the Coalition of Civil Society Groups in Education,” the minister said.

The consultation, according to the minister, is scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, 2025, to ensure stakeholder input is incorporated before the bill progresses.

The Ghana Scholarships Authority Bill, laid before Parliament on July 8, 2025, aims to reform the country’s scholarship system by elevating the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat into a full-fledged authority.

The proposed legislation seeks to eliminate nepotism and cronyism in scholarship awards, ensuring allocations are based on merit and need, particularly in critical disciplines like science, mathematics, and education.

It includes provisions to end government-funded foreign scholarships for courses offered in Ghanaian universities, aiming to strengthen local institutions and promote fairness.

However, civil society groups, including Africa Education Watch, have raised concerns about the bill’s governance structure, arguing that it grants excessive executive control, which could undermine transparency efforts.

Kumasi Mayor Directs Traffic – DailyGuide Network

Zuba directing traffic in Kumasi

KUMASI MAYOR, Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, has become the toast of residents of the boisterous city.

This follows the emergence of a viral video on social media in which he was busily directing vehicular traffic in Kumasi.

According to reports, the Kumasi Mayor, nicknamed as ‘Zuba’, was in his car when he spotted traffic congestion at Ashtown.

Vehicles that were coming from different directions had virtually blocked each other at an intersection on Monday.

The drivers were not ready to pave way for each other to move, a development which created chaotic scenes.

To the surprise of the people at the scene, Zuba suddenly alighted from his vehicle and started to direct the traffic.

Few minutes after Zuba’s intervention, the aggrieved drivers reached a compromise as the traffic started to flow again.

There were voices in the background of the short video showering tons of praises on the Kumasi Mayor.

“He is Zuba, the new Kumasi Mayor, and he is a humble person and very hardworking,” one person remarked.

Another person noted that Zuba has the interest and the transformation of Kumasi at heart, so he should be supported.

betPawa reveals Africa’s biggest Aviator winners with GH¢11.4m payouts

0

At a time when the global gaming industry continues to grapple with trust, transparency and transformation, betPawa has once again raised the bar.

The biggest iGaming brand in Africa hosted a landmark celebration in Accra this week to reveal and honour its newest record-breaking Aviator BIG winners from Ghana, Cameroon, and Zambia.

The centrepiece was a historic Aviator round that paid out GHS 11,440,000 equivalent to USD 1, 107,573 the largest group win in a single round on Aviator in Africa. Once again showing betPawa has the lowest minimum stakes and the highest max win as high as GHS 4,000,000 equivalent to $250,000 on each Aviator round in Africa.

As Spribe, Aviator’s creators, put it: “Our analytics confirm that this is the largest group win in a single round to date in Africa.”

Among the standout winners was Clovis from Cameroon, who placed two separate micro-bets of 150 FCFA (USD 0.26) and 100 FCFA (USD 0.17), walking away with a combined payout of 150,000,000 FCFA (USD 270,000). His winning multipliers of 500,000x and 750,000x rank among the highest ever recorded on Aviator in Africa.

Also celebrated from Cameroon, Godi and Hyacinte, who each turned a 100 FCFA (USD 0.17) bet into 75,000,000 FCFA (USD 135,000) with a 750,000x multiplier. Jules placed two identical 100 FCFA bets and earned over 86 million FCFA (USD 155,010.60), with a 430,584.98x multiplier on each bet. Carlos followed with two 200 FCFA bets that brought him 32,748,396 FCFA (USD 58,947.12), while Mathieu turned just 125 FCFA (USD 0.22) into 14,145,592.50 FCFA (USD 25,431), proving once again that small bets on betPawa can go BIG.

From Ghana, Prince, based in Kumasi, staked GH¢6.50 (USD 0.62) and won GH¢2,000,000 (USD 193,079) with a 307,692.31x multiplier. In Zambia, Sidney placed a modest K6 (USD 0.25) bet and brought home K3,250,000 (USD 136,110) with a 500,000x multiplier.

And while the celebration in Accra stole the spotlight, BIG winners keep popping up across the continent like clockwork. In Uganda a player hit UGX 450,000,000 (USD 121,500) at a 2,250x multiplier. In Malawi, another player flipped just MWK 481 (28 cents) into over $124,000, another did it with MWK 5,520 ($3.19), and someone else turned a tiny MWK 161 (9 cents!) into $53,000—all with sky-high multipliers and max wins.

This event marks yet another high point in the brand’s growing legacy. In 2023, Fuseini from Kumasi, Ghana, made headlines when he won GHS 5,200,00 equivalent to $500,000 USD on Aviator, a single payout that remains the largest ever recorded on the game.

“This is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do,” said Borah Ndanyungu, Head of Local Marketing and CSR at betPawa. “We love big winners. In fact, we’re built for them. We’ve designed a platform with the lowest minimum stakes and the highest max win of $250,000 on Aviator in Africa and that’s not changing. When our players win BIG, we celebrate even BIGGER.”

betPawa didn’t just celebrate its winners—it gave them the VIP treatment of a lifetime. From chauffeured rides and luxury accommodation to custom-made gifts and business class flights, every detail screamed “you’ve made it.” But the true showstopper? A once-in-a-lifetime private jet experience soaring over the skies of Ghana

But the party wasn’t just about glitz and glamour—betPawa is backing up the BIG wins with BIG support. In partnership with the Gaming Commission of Ghana and a team of financial expert advisors, the brand is rolling out a financial empowerment program designed to help its BIG winners turn lucky breaks into lasting impact. From smart investments to future planning, betPawa wants its players to win for life, not just for the weekend.

“BIG wins come with BIG responsibilities,” said Borah Ndanyungu, Head of Local Marketing and CSR. “We take player safety seriously. That’s why our platform is built with smart tools and education that promote responsible gaming. We want everyone to enjoy the game and stay in control.

Kufour was much accessible than Akufo-Addo – Stephen Asamoah Boateng

0

Former member of parliament for Mfantsiman West, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has stated that former President John Agyekum Kufour was more welcoming and friendly than Nana Akufo-Addo.

According to him, Nana Akufo-Addo surrounded himself with the few people he trusted and access to him by many was difficult.

“There were many times I tried to meet Nana Addo which failed because he didn’t want many people around him, but the few he trusted. Although we had good plans and ideas, it was difficult to get to him, unlike former President Kufour who availed himself to everyone including me,” indicated Mr. Boateng.

He told Nhyira FM former President Akufo-Addo was kind-hearted, but his intransigence was something that made it difficult for his government to succeed.

“I was not so close to Akufo-Addo, he has a good heart, but his intransigence affected the NPP government,” he stated.

He stressed on the need for leadership to open up to opinions from other loyal members for the betterment of the party.

In his view, many party stalwarts had better ideas that could help but leadership was a challenge.

“We have to open up to party folks who have experience and ideas which can make the party attractive. Some leaders were reserved and people found it difficult to speak to them. From national to polling stations executives, every executive has something that can develop the party,” Mr. Boateng stressed.

The Accra Regional Police Command says it has launched investigations into the series of violent incidents that marred the parliamentary re-run election in Ablekuma North, Accra, on Friday, July 11.

In a statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the police confirmed that they are reviewing multiple videos capturing assaults and disturbances at various polling stations.

“The Command has progressed to obtain statements from complainants and witnesses to aid in the ongoing investigations,” the statement noted.

According to the police, vital leads have been gathered, and arrests are expected soon.

Victims involved in the reported assaults have been issued Police Medical Report Forms to support their medical needs and facilitate further inquiry.

One of the major incidents under scrutiny involves a police officer seen in a video assaulting a journalist at the polling station.

The officer, who has since been interdicted, is now facing criminal charges for assault.

The Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to holding accountable anyone found culpable of violence, intimidation, or electoral misconduct.

“We encourage the public to cooperate with the Police and share any credible information by contacting us on emergency numbers 18555 or 191,” the statement added.

The Ablekuma North re-run was ordered after the initial parliamentary election results were annulled over procedural irregularities. Friday’s poll was meant to restore confidence in the electoral process but was instead disrupted by pockets of violence and allegations of police brutality.

The Accra Regional Police Command has assured residents that justice will be pursued without fear or favour.

Education Ministry launches reconstituted research group for policy reform – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Ministry of Education has taken a major step toward data-driven decision-making with the launch of the reconstituted Education Sector Research Group (ESRG).

The inauguration, held on Wednesday, July 16, forms part of the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project Additional Financing (GALOP AF2), a government initiative aimed at scaling up successful interventions and strengthening the research infrastructure that supports them.

As part of this effort, GALOP AF2 is also providing funding for the revitalised ESRG.

Addressing the event on  Education, Minister Haruna Iddrisu underscored the importance of evidence and data in guiding effective education policies that impact Ghanaian children.
In line with this, the ESRG will play a key role in steering the work of GEEDLab, ensuring that its datasets and studies align directly with national policy priorities.

The group has been expanded to include a broader membership base, drawing from academia, civil society, think tanks, and development partners. This inclusion ensures that a diverse range of perspectives will inform the Research and Learning Agenda (RLA).

The Minister also outlined the expectations for the ESRG, which include facilitating the drafting and finalisation of the RLA to identify and refine high-impact research questions, generating and synthesising evidence into actionable policy briefs, and monitoring the use of such evidence in decision-making to promote accountability.
Members of the group were encouraged to apply their expertise and curiosity, challenge existing assumptions, and champion innovation in addressing educational challenges.

Haruna Iddrisu expressed appreciation to development partners, particularly the SCALE Funders, the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), and the World Bank, for their continued confidence in Ghana’s education reform agenda and their dedication to building the country’s capacity to learn, adapt, and thrive.

Minority walks out of Parliament over Ayariga’s remarks on Akwatia seat

0

The Minority in Parliament staged a walkout on Thursday, July 17, in protest against comments made by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga concerning the yet-to-be-declared vacancy of the Akwatia parliamentary seat following the death of MP Ernest Yaw Kumi.

Ayariga, raising the matter during proceedings, questioned Speaker Alban Bagbin on when the seat would be formally declared vacant.

He referred to a recent visit by Parliamentary leadership to the late MP’s family, noting that the death had been acknowledged during that interaction.

In response, Speaker Bagbin clarified that Parliament could not proceed with declaring the seat vacant or notify the Electoral Commission until it receives formal communication from the bereaved family.

The situation grew tense when Ayariga alleged that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had already circulated campaign posters featuring the late MP’s widow, Mavis Kumi, indicating her intention to contest the anticipated by-election.

The Minority found Ayariga’s remarks inappropriate and insensitive, describing them as premature and politicising a period of mourning. In protest, they walked out of the chamber.

Two members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have filed a motion at the High Court seeking to halt the party’s Extraordinary Delegates’ Conference scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2025.

In the application, which has been set for hearing next Thursday, July 24, 2025, the plaintiffs; Shamsudeen Iddrisu and Boateng Kwadwo, contend that the party has violated its constitution by failing to organise constituency and regional delegates’ conferences, which they argue are mandatory prerequisites for convening a National Delegates’ Conference.

They further argue that the party’s National Council does not have the authority to waive the constitutional requirements for holding constituency and regional annual delegates’ conferences ahead of the national one.

According to the plaintiffs, only the National Annual Delegates’ Conference, the party’s supreme governing body, has the exclusive authority to amend or waive such constitutional provisions.

They claim to have petitioned the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) over what they describe as “unlawful” actions, but say the NEC failed to respond to their concerns.

“The conduct of the party will deprive members at the constituency and regional levels of the opportunity to consider the proposed amendments ahead of the scheduled date for the conference and also the opportunity to make meaningful contributions at the conference,” the plaintiffs stated.

They added that the NPP would not suffer any hardship or inconvenience if the court granted the application, since the party would still have the opportunity to reconvene the conference once it complies with its constitutional requirements.

The plaintiffs are therefore praying the court to issue an interlocutory injunction restraining the NPP from holding the Extraordinary Delegates’ Conference until all procedural and constitutional matters have been addressed.

If Crusade had won VGMA 2016, more artistes would not be making ‘fast food songs’

Donzy said 'Crusade' deserved Collaboration of the Year in 2016 Donzy said ‘Crusade’ deserved Collaboration of the Year in 2016

Ghanaian rapper, Donzy Chaka, has stated that he was disappointed after losing the “Collaboration of the Year” award at the 2016 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), adding that a win for his hit song “Crusade” would have encouraged creativity in the music industry.

In an interview on Hitz FM on July 17, 2025, Donzy was asked if he had ever won a VGMA.

He responded that he hadn’t, but believes his song which featured Kofi Kinaata, “Crusade”, deserved the award in 2016.

“Not yet, I was supposed to win with ‘Crusade’ but…that was the collaboration of the year, it was supposed to be. We were supposed to win that award but it’s gone. So, now we have to focus on the future,” he said.

The award that year went to VVIP and Sena Dagadu for their song Skolom.

Donzy admitted he was disappointed by the outcome, especially because he and Kinaata had taken a creative direction with “Crusade”, setting it apart from most songs at the time where most artistes were chasing instant hit songs.

“I was disappointed because we had to go outside the normal comfort zone to do something different. Imagine if Crusade had won that award, it would let a whole lot of people mame more creative songs instead of them going to the studio trying to create a ‘fast food song.’ It would have let people sit down to write creatively,” he said.

He received 14 years for robbery and 5 years for causing harm. The sentences are to run concurrently after he pleaded guilty to the charges.

The Central East Regional Police Command secured the conviction following a robbery incident that occurred near Golden Pride Preparatory School in Millennium City, Gomoa East, at around 5:30 a.m. on July 10, 2025.

According to the police, Samuel robbed a female victim of her handbag, which contained an iPhone 16 Pro Max and a purse with an unspecified amount of cash.

Later that same day, the police, in collaboration with the victim, tracked Samuel to his hideout in Ngleshie Amanfro.

Police also retrieved a wallet containing a health insurance card bearing the name Kwapong Sahnan, suggesting that Samuel may have been involved in multiple robberies.

DSP Victor Kofi Dosoo, Head of Public Affairs for the Central East Region, confirmed the conviction and emphasized the police’s ongoing efforts to ensure public safety.

“The Central East Regional Police Command remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the public by bringing perpetrators of such crimes to face the full rigors of the law,” he stated.

Igbo Kingdom In Ghana: “An old 2013 interview I deeply regret “

0

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa yesterday, July 16, 2025 invited Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, the man captured in a viral video claiming he intends to establish an Igbo Kingdom in Ghana following an alleged purchase of a tract of land.

According to the Minister at a meeting, Izwe clarified that it was an old 2013 interview which he deeply regrets.

Mr.Ablakwa said the leader of the Igbo Community in Ghana assured that he has long abandoned that idea and has not purchased any piece of land for that purpose.

Chukwudi conveyed profuse apologies to the President, Government, Chiefs and People of Ghana for the unfortunate agitations his rather ill-advised interview has created.

“As I emphasized in the meeting, Ghana is exceptionally proud of its celebrated friendly foreign policy which is welcoming of all to our beautiful and peaceful country, particularly Africans and people of African descent. We are determined to keep championing that Pan-African identity — for which we have attained global renown,” the Minister revealed.

According to him, “We however expect all our fellow Africans and guests to adhere to our peaceful and law-abiding traditions and desist from conduct or pronouncements considered unlawful, divisive and incendiary even as they enjoy our famed hospitality.”

Government has therefore called for calm and restraint as well as recalls the inseparable bond of friendship and brotherhood between Ghana and Nigeria.

“Let us all in the true spirit of African solidarity guard our commentary so this matter does not degenerate into xenophobic consequences. Long live our incredibly vibrant Ghana Nigeria relations,” he concluded.

GRA shines at commonwealth conference in Papua New Guinea

Anthony Kwasi Sarpong is the GRA's Commisioner-General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong is the GRA’s Commisioner-General

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has received strong recognition at the just-ended 45th Annual Meeting and Technical Conference of the Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators (CATA) in Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby.

The event brought together senior tax administrators and policy leaders from across 47 member countries to deliberate on pressing global tax issues and share country-level innovations.

Ghana’s delegation was led by Commissioner-General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, who is playing a central role in shaping the conference’s discourse.

Sarpong moderated a flagship session on the theme “Implementing Global Tax Standards While Preserving National Interest: Strategies for Adapting International Frameworks.”

In his opening remarks, Sarpong emphasised the need for balanced global frameworks such as the Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) pillars and digital tax rules.

“Tax administrations in emerging markets face the dual responsibility of remaining internationally compliant while protecting national revenue bases. This session is about finding that common ground and remaining balanced in all frameworks that relate to local developments,” he said.

Discussions during the session focused on key issues such as the adaptation of the Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) measures, treatment of digital services taxation, the capacity gaps in lower-income countries, and the role of domestic resource mobilisation in achieving sustainable development goals.

Sarpong’s leadership at this session highlights Ghana’s growing role in global tax reform dialogue.

Ghana’s delegation has actively engaged in technical panels and bilateral discussions throughout the conference, sharing the country’s recent experiences and innovations.

Notable among these is the implementation of Ghana’s 2023–2026 Medium-Term Revenue Strategy (MTRS), which outlines a coordinated reform program aimed at broadening the tax base, improving compliance, and leveraging technology.

The GRA also highlighted progress in taxpayer education with the introduction of the National Tax Education Strategy, modified taxation, risk-based compliance management, and anti-corruption efforts.

Also representing Ghana at the conference is Lawrence Hotsonyame, Assistant Commissioner and Head of Domestic Tax Technical Training, who also serves as Ghana’s official representative to CATA.

The 45th CATA Conference was hosted by the Internal Revenue Commission (IRC) of Papua New Guinea.

The event features a mix of technical workshops, plenary sessions, and closed-door consultations on issues such as international tax cooperation, domestic revenue mobilisation, tax and gender equity, and administrative governance.

Ablekuma North violence proves rerun was a mistake – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Former Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Acheampong, has described the violent scenes at the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun as a key reason why he opposed the idea of a rerun in the first place, citing concerns about the recurrence of electoral violence similar to what occurred during the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, July 17, Mr. Acheampong said the chaos that erupted at the St. Peter’s polling centre only reinforced his earlier fears that the rerun would expose Ghana’s democratic process to further instability and harm its reputation.

“For me, it was one of the reasons why I was against a rerun, knowing the turnout and the events that happened in the 2024 elections. I didn’t want a situation where this beautiful democracy we are enjoying, which offers me the opportunity to express myself, would be marred by violence,” he stated.

He reiterated his long-held stance against political violence, describing it as a threat to the very foundation of democracy. Acheampong stressed that democracy must be practised through dialogue and expression, not intimidation.

“I have always condemned, and I will sit here and continue to condemn violence. Democracy is not violence, but how I can speak up about my concerns and make it abundantly clear that this is our practice, and this is how we must uphold it,” he added.

The Ablekuma North rerun, held on Friday, July 11, was thrown into chaos after a group of unidentified macho men stormed the St. Peter’s polling station, violently disrupting the voting process.

Former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson was among those assaulted, as reported by Channel One News journalist Jude Duncan.

In a separate incident, a police officer reportedly assaulted a GHOne TV journalist at the Church of Pentecost North Odorkor Polling Station 2, sparking outrage from media stakeholders and civil society groups.

Meanwhile, Hamza Suhuyini, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, has confirmed that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has launched a formal investigation into the incidents.

More parents come forward after child abuse arrest in Hamburg

0

Hamburg, July 16, (dpa/GNA) – German prosecutors said additional parents have contacted authorities, following the arrest of a 20-year-old man believed to be the ringleader of a group of paedophiles, suspected of having sexually abused children online under the alias “White Tiger.”

Some of the parents expressed concern that their children may also have been targeted, Senior Public Prosecutor Mia Sperling-Karstens told dpa. Investigators are reviewing the information provided.

The man, a German-Iranian national, was arrested in mid-June at his parents’ home in Hamburg. He is accused of leading a group of cybercriminals who allegedly coerced at least eight minors aged 11 to 15 from Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States into acts of self-harm.

According to German prosecutors, the man targeted children who were struggling, including in suicide forums. He is said to have won their trust before making his victims emotionally dependent on him, in order to make them harm themselves, to the point of suicide.

One 13-year-old boy from the US is believed to have died by suicide, while a 14-year-old girl from Canada reportedly attempted to take her own life.

The suspect, who denies the accusations, remains in custody and faces charges of murder, attempted murder, grievous bodily harm, sexual abuse of children, and possession of child pornographic material.

So far, there is no evidence the international group known as 764, has other members in Hamburg, prosecutors said.

Okyeame Kwame sharing a kiss with his wife Okyeame Kwame sharing a kiss with his wife

Ghanaian hiplife artiste Okyeame Kwame has urged women in relationships to do more to take care of their partners.

According to him, many men go through a lot of mental stress; thus, they need the ‘soft touch’ of a woman to help them handle such pressures.

In an interview on TV3 on Showbiz 360, he explained that men often lack emotional outlets and are unable to even confide even in their parents about the heavy burdens they deal with.

These stresses, he warned, can trigger serious health issues for them.

“For us men, there’s nobody to talk to. You can’t even call your parents to talk about your personal issues. And so for us, either we are imploding by holding on to our stresses, and it’s causing lots of different problems; oxidated blood, insulin level, and many more,” he said.

Okyeame Kwame, who is a staunch advocate of men’s mental health, emphasised that men too crave emotional and physical care at home. Specifically from their partners.

“So, to our girlfriends, when we come to you in the evening, please pamper us. Take off our shoes, rub our feet. Massage our backs. Because we have been in the gutters. We’ve been in the mines. We’ve been on top of the electricity poles. All to make sure that we all eat. We also need support,” he appealed.

Fuel levy a necessary move to stabilise economy – Vanderpuye – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has welcomed the rollout of the GH₵1 per litre fuel levy, describing it as a necessary step toward stabilising the economy and addressing Ghana’s energy challenges.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, July 17, Vanderpuye expressed gratitude for the reintroduction of the levy, stating that it has the potential to ease the financial burden on the government and improve fuel price stability.

“I think all of us sat here and agreed that it is a good move if it will continue to make the economy better and make the prices of fuel stay or even lower. I think it was suspended for a reason.

“If it is coming into effect, I thank God because it will help us raise the necessary revenue to take care of the debt that accrued from our power supply and also help the government meet the cost differentials in bringing in fuel to power our generators,” he stated.

The fuel levy officially took effect on Wednesday, July 16, as part of efforts to raise funds for Ghana’s struggling power sector.

The government argues that the measure is essential to cover outstanding energy sector debts and finance fuel imports needed for power generation.

Despite this, the policy has sparked sharp criticism from some quarters. Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has reiterated his opposition to the levy, arguing that it is already pushing fuel prices higher and placing additional pressure on consumers.

He warned that the move validates earlier concerns raised by the Minority, which cautioned that the levy could worsen the cost of living and erode the purchasing power of Ghanaians.

“Whenever a vacancy occurs in Parliament, the Clerk of Parliament shall notify the Electoral Commission in writing within seven days after becoming aware. Mr. Speaker, if Ghanaians ask the Clerk if they are aware or not, can he say he is not aware?

“After being informed by the Leader of the Caucus through a statement in this House, the Clerk himself followed up at his house and met the family members of the deceased, and they confirmed to him that the deceased had passed. And this was on national television,” He stated.

Spare parts dealers demand action on ‘unfulfilled’ duty reduction promise

Godfred Adu Kofi is chairman of the Suame Magazine Spare Parts Dealers Association Godfred Adu Kofi is chairman of the Suame Magazine Spare Parts Dealers Association

Correspondence from Ashanti Region

The Suame Magazine Spare Parts Dealers Association has voiced strong discontent over the continued high import duties at the nation’s ports, despite the recent strengthening of the Ghanaian Cedi and the Dollar.

Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi, Chairman of the association, Godfred Adu Kofi, expressed their frustration and urged the John Dramani Mahama-led government to address the issue immediately.

“We are here today to express our deep displeasure at the government’s failure to reduce duties at the ports,” stated Adu Kofi. “Despite the cedi’s gains against major trading currencies, duties remain stubbornly high, and in some cases, have even increased.”

The Association highlighted a disconnect between the Cedi’s appreciation and the import duties levied by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). They pointed to examples, such as the Toyota Voxy car, which has seen import clearance costs surge, allegedly due to reclassification.

According to them, the cost of clearing these vehicles has risen from GH¢35,000.00 to as high as GH¢60,000.00.

The dealers are particularly critical of the government’s failure to implement promised reforms. Adu Kofi reminded the government of a campaign promise to implement a flat-rate duty system at the ports. “During the last election campaign, the former president promised us flat-rate duties at the ports. We had hoped this would be addressed in the last budget, but that did not happen,” he recalled.

The Association’s plea is now focused on the upcoming mid-year budget. They are urging the government to consider implementing the promised flat rate system. The dealers also complained about public perception and said that they are being wrongly accused of price abnormality, particularly from commercial drivers, despite the strengthened cedi.

“We implore the President to ensure duties reflect the Cedi’s strength so we can pass on lower prices to the public,” Adu Kofi appealed.

The Association emphasised that a reduction in port duties would be critical for allowing spare parts prices to become more affordable.

Charged alongside him are seven other individuals and three (3) companies for their various roles in the scheme that resulted in them amassing a whopping GH₵280 million for themselves.

They are Jacob Kwamina Amuah, Coordinator of the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund (UPPF); Wendy Newman, NPA staff; Albert Ankrah, Director, Kel Logistics Limited; Isaac Mensah, Director, Kel Logistics Limited; Bright Bediako-Mensah, Director, Kel Logistics and Kings Energy Limited and Kwaku Aboagye Acquaah – Director, Kings Energy Limited
The three companies caught in the OSP’s alleged corruption and extortion web are Propnest Limited, Kel Logistics Limited and Kings Energy Limited.

The OSP says the charges stem from investigations initiated by it in late 2024 into alleged unlawful conduct involving the diversion of public funds and collusion with oil marketing and bulk distribution companies.

It says between 2022 and December 2024, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, Jacob Kwamina Amuah and Wendy Newman acting under the “colour of their official duties allegedly orchestrated and operated a criminal extortion scheme through which they unlawfully collected GH₵280,516,127.19 from petroleum transporters and oil marketing companies.”

The OSP says the scheme, initiated by Abdul-Hamid and implemented by Amuah and Newman, lacked any lawful mandate and exploited their positions within the NPA.

“From the proceeds, Amuah is alleged to have handed GH₵24 million directly to Abdul-Hamid between January and December 2024. An additional GH₵227.2 million was channeled through Newman under Amuah’s direction for further disbursement.

Investigations further revealed that the other four accused persons, in collaboration with a fugitive director of Kel Logistics Limited, created and utilised Propnest Ltd., Kel Logistics Ltd., and Kings Energy Ltd. as vehicles for laundering the illicit proceeds.

The laundered funds were allegedly used to purchase and construct houses, acquire trucks for an oil distribution business, and build fuel stations—all as part of efforts to conceal and disguise the origin of the criminal proceeds.

All seven individuals and three companies have been charged with a total of 25 counts, including extortion by a Public Officer, conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering, money Laundering.

The OSP says one suspect identified as Osei Tutu Adjei, a Director of Kel Logistics Ltd. is currently at large.

The accused persons have been apprehended and are set to appear on a date to be determined by the court for their pleas to be taken.

“The OSP reaffirms its commitment to investigating and prosecuting corruption and corruption-related offences without fear or favour, and urges all public institutions to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of corruption.”

President John Mahama has unveiled a development agenda for the Northeast Region, including the establishment of a public university, major road projects, improved health facilities, and agricultural investments to boost economic growth and address youth unemployment.

Speaking at the Jubilee House on Thursday, July 17, during a visit by a high-powered delegation from the Nayiri, Overlord of Mamprugu, President Mahama announced, “I’m pleased to reaffirm that my government is actively working on the modalities for the establishment of a public university in the Northeast Region of our country.”

He said the initiative was part of efforts to ensure equal access to higher education.

“This is part of our broader effort to ensure equitable access to tertiary education for all our people in all parts of the country and so that nobody will be left out,” he added.

The president stressed the importance of road infrastructure in unlocking the region’s economic potential.

“We recognise that development cannot be complete without reliable infrastructure, and that is why we are prioritising the completion of major roads critical to connectivity and economic activity within the Northeast Region,” he said.

Key road projects named include the Nalerigu–Gambaga–Walewale road, the Ulugu–Pusiga road, the Nasia–Tanga road, the Nalerigu–Bunkpurugu–Nakpanduri road, the Nalerigu–Bintiri road, the Tamale–Zebilla–Walewale road, and the Nanduri–Kolumbugu road.

He also pledged that the long-delayed Micho Bridge would soon be completed to improve access to remote areas.

Addressing water needs, President Mahama said, “We are providing small-town water systems to Nalerigu, Gambaga and Walewale to tackle the persistent water challenges.”

On health care, he confirmed plans to construct new district hospitals and CHPS compounds in Jagaba, Mpulugu, Yunyo, and Chereponi. “As also contained in our manifesto, we shall build a modern Regional Hospital in the Northeast Region. This will spare our people the trouble of having to travel all the way to Tamale to get specialised treatment,” he said.

He also announced that all six new regions, including the Northeast, will each receive a modern sports stadium to promote youth development through sports.

Turning to agriculture, President Mahama said the Yagaba–Fumbisi area would be developed into Ghana’s rice production hub. “A modern rice mill is to be built at Dzadema to buy and process all the rice that is produced. The rice will be bought by the National Buffer Stock Company and supplied to our schools and hospitals, and so the farmers will have a ready market for their rice,” he explained.

On youth employment, the president acknowledged the urgency of the crisis. “No task is more urgent than creating hope and opportunities for our young people. We are acutely aware of the unemployment crisis, particularly among the youth in the Northeast Region,” he said.

He highlighted government interventions like the National Apprenticeship Programme and the Adwumawura initiative. “We are eager to partner closely with your palace and traditional councils to ensure that these programmes are tailored to local realities and benefits,” President Mahama assured the Nayiri and his delegation.
