A future NPP government won’t do retaliatory politics – Afenyo-Markin

0

Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader and Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader and Effutu MP

The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not adopt a retaliatory approach or engage in vindictive politics if the party returns to power.

According to him, such approaches have neither benefited nor contributed to the development of the country under past governments, and, therefore, the NPP is committed to charting a more constructive and forward-looking path.

He made this known during an interview with Joy FM, in response to a question about whether a future NPP government would dismiss all seven Supreme Court justices nominated by President Mahama, an assertion previously made by party communicator, Dennis Miracles Aboagye.

“The call is an end to retaliatory politics, and I’m sure that when situations occur, people out of pain speak and express views. But I sit here as a leader of the caucus to say that the retaliatory approach is not the way to go for our nation. He has expressed a view, but I’m quite sure that this wouldn’t be the approach for us as a nation because it would mean a vicious cycle without an end. Where would it lead us to?” he said.

Afenyo-Markin highlighted some of the recurring mistakes made by the political class, which he believes have not served the country well.

He noted that new governments often operate under the perception that targeting political opponents will help them maintain power for longer periods.

However, he argued that such actions have neither proven effective in extending a government’s tenure nor yielded meaningful results, adding that this approach ultimately undermines nation-building efforts.

“… One unfortunate thing about us as a political class is sometimes when we get the power, the inclination is that if you bring down your opponent, that would make you stay in power for long. It’s one unfortunate mistake. It hasn’t helped and we seem not to be learning lessons,” he added.

His comments come in response to a claim made by Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Dr Bawumia 2024 Campaign, who stated that an NPP government would dismiss all seven Supreme Court judges appointed by the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, led by President John Dramani Mahama.

According to him, these justices would leave the Bench to allow for different individuals to be appointed should the NPP win the 2028 Election.

“Future NPP government will dismiss all seven newly nominated Supreme Court justices,” Asaase Radio quoted him as saying on the show Atumpan on April 30, 2025.

GH¢300m Allocated For National Apprenticeship Programme

0

President John Dramani Mahama at the programme’s launch

President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that an amount of GH¢300 million has been allocated in the 2025 national budget to fund the National Apprenticeship Programme.

“Full funding of this programme has been made with an allocation of GH¢300 million in the 2025 budget by the Minister of Finance,” he stated.

According to him, the programme is a testament to the NDC government’s commitment to invest in one of the most critical areas of national development — the youth.

“This launch is contained in the NDC’s 2024 manifesto to equip young people with relevant, marketable skills that meet the demands of the job market,” he added.

President Mahama explained that the National Apprenticeship Programme aims to provide structured, high-quality vocational training to over 500,000 young people.

The programme will commence with an initial cohort of 10,000 apprentices nationwide, he said.

Training will be delivered in various sectors including agriculture, fish farming, poultry, beekeeping, masonry, carpentry, plumbing, electrical works, pottery, weaving, leatherwork, hairdressing, dressmaking, makeup artistry, welding, furniture making, solar technology, event management, eco-tourism, auto mechanics, software development, data analysis, and graphic design, among others.

He disclosed that each apprentice will receive a stipend, a starter toolkit, and a certificate upon completion of the programme.

“The National Apprenticeship Programme is designed to be inclusive, with at least 45% of trainees being women, and at least 5% being persons with disabilities. Special attention will also be given to marginalized and vulnerable persons across the country,” he emphasised.

Addressing participants at the launch held at the UDS campus in Tamale, President Mahama noted that Ghana faces a growing youth population with limited access to employable skills.

“Ghana is blessed with a vibrant youth population, but the youth are still battling with unemployment,” he said.

Citing recent data from the Ghana Statistical Service, he indicated that youth unemployment currently stands at 12.6% for individuals aged 15–35, with an alarming 29% of young people neither in education, employment, nor training.

“These figures are not just statistics; they represent real lives – the lives of our children,” he said.

President Mahama reaffirmed the NDC’s pledge, as stated in its 2024 manifesto, to create one million jobs for young people, particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, ICT, and vocational skills.

“The National Apprenticeship Programme is a step in the right direction towards fulfilling that promise,” he said.

He encouraged the youth, regardless of educational background, to take advantage of the initiative and acquire practical skills for a sustainable future.

Afenyo-Markin commends NDC for rebranding efforts

0

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has praised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its rebranding efforts, urging the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to undertake a strategic rebranding effort, as it seeks to regain the trust of the Ghanaian electorate for the 2028 elections.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Afenyo-Markin emphasised that in Ghanaian politics, party identity often holds more weight than the individual candidate.

“When going into a presidential election, it is not about the individual. Look at the history of those who went as independent candidates. In the end, it is the party brand that matters,” he said.

He referred to the legacy of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), explaining that voters relate to its tradition and achievements.

“People know the NPP tradition – UP, PP, PFP, and now the NPP. They know the ‘Osono’ party. They know what Kufuor did, what Busia did, and what Akufo-Addo has done on the NPP ticket.”

Afenyo-Markin recalled his university days, noting how difficult it used to be for students to publicly associate with the NDC.

“Back then, if you were contesting for SRC or hall president and someone said, ‘Oh, that guy is NDC,’ that was the end of your campaign. So even if you weren’t NPP, you would say you were.”

He commended the NDC for recognising this image problem and making efforts to correct it, particularly through campus outreach.

“Today, let me commend the NDC. Sometimes, you must recognise something good in your opponent. Over the years, the NDC has worked on their image, and it has helped them. On campuses, they started outreach programmes, and students in TEIN became bold enough to say, ‘I am NDC.’ It was no longer only NPP students who were vocal.”

He added that the long-held perception that academia naturally leaned toward the NPP has also shifted.

“We took it for granted that the academic space belonged to us. But over time, the NDC has worked hard. Now you see doctors and professors boldly talking about their party. That wasn’t the case 20 or 25 years ago.”

He also mentioned that the NDC had made strategic efforts to improve its presence within the legal profession.

“I once gave an interview and spoke about how people used to believe almost every lawyer was NPP. The NDC saw this and decided to invest in that area too.”

According to Afenyo-Markin, these developments should serve as lessons for the NPP, which is now in opposition.

“In Parliament, as the opposition, we must take note. We need to focus on engaging the youth, professionals, the business community, and students. We must help them understand not only our ideology, but also what we can do for them.” He stated

He concluded by urging the NPP to prepare itself ahead of the 2028 general elections.

“As part of our rebranding, it is our duty as the Minority Caucus to give people confidence in the party. With that in place, we will be repairing the NPP vehicle for whoever wins the flagbearership to take over and lead us to victory in 2028.”

‘Africans demand to do things on our terms’

Ghanaian singer and songwriter Rocky Dawuni Ghanaian singer and songwriter Rocky Dawuni

Ghanaian singer and songwriter Rocky Dawuni has expressed support for Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

This follows an alleged assassination attempt on the head of state, reportedly linked to policies introduced after taking office, which some perceive as a threat.

In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie during the launch of the ‘Black Star Experience’ on May 1, 2025, Rocky Dawuni emphasised the need for Africans to take charge of their own affairs.

He emphasised that it is time Africans are allowed to do things on their terms without the influence of the West.

“Africans need to be in charge of their affairs. We can decide what is good for us. Right now, the people of Africa want something new. We have tried so many dimensions of political leadership, and the payoff has not reached the people of a continent that is blessed so much means we deserve more… We want leadership that represents the aspirations of our people, righteous leadership, and a leadership that elevates who we are as a people.

“What is happening in Burkina Faso isn’t about only Tarore but the feeling that is going on in the youth of Africa. This is the age of Africa and we demand to do this according to our terms… This is the vision and the beginning of the new Africa,” he said.

The four-time Grammy Award nominee further noted that in five years to come Africans should be able to utilise natural resources without interference from the West.

“In five years there should be development, empowering our people, our resources should be used in the advancement of our people. All our people should be raised out of deprivation and utilizing our God-given gifts is to lead humanity to where it should go,” he added.

Stand For Justice – Lebanese Ambassador To Law Students

0

Maher Kheir (2nd left), handing over the donation to Nina Sackey

Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, Maher Kheir, has urged actors in the legal industry to stand for vulnerable groups and be the voice of the voiceless in the Ghanaian society.

This, he observes, is the basis for a thriving legal practice that champions human rights, promotes justice and grows democracy.

In his opinion, Ghana’s growing democracy calls for more robust practitioners who will speak truth to power and uphold professional standards to ensure equality and protection of minority groups in society.

He made the remarks when the Lebanese Community awarded scholarships to eight students at the Ghana School of Law for the 2024/2025 academic year.

The ceremony happened in the presence of the Lebanese Ambassador Maher Kheir, the Head of Legal Department at the Ghana School of Law, Nina Sackey, Representative from the Office of the Chief Accountant, Matthias Aidoo Asamoah, Student Affairs Officer, Dr. Georgina Ahorbo, and Representative of the Lebanese Committee among others.

The beneficiaries include Abigail Nakuor Wowolo, Ohenewaa Asantewaa Armoh, Chelsea Coffie, Jasmine Tekyi-Acheampong from Part 2, and Dion Kassim, Emenyo Afi Nutakor, Keren Sackey and Maame Ekua Otenewa Oduro from Part 1.

Ambassador Kheir, in his address, noted that becoming a lawyer is not only about mastering legal texts or passing exams.

“It is about standing for justice. It is about using your voice to defend the voiceless. It is about serving with integrity, even when it’s difficult,” he added.

He challenged students to strive to make a difference in the legal profession and contribute meaningfully to the Ghanaian society.

Ambassador Kheir stressed that the support through the Lebanese Community Scholarship Program forms part of efforts to honour their hard work, while sending a message that “excellence deserves recognition and support.”

Dr. Georgina Ahorbor, Student Affairs Officer at the Ghana School of Law, expressed gratitude to the Lebanese Community for their financial support to students over the years.

“We are very grateful for this sponsorship given to our students. It always goes a very long way to cushion them and their parents while allowing them to focus on their studies. We don’t take it for granted,” she said.

She, however, appealed for more to be done to help reach many more students to access legal education at the school.

One of the beneficiaries, Ms. Otenewa Oduro, thanked the Ambassador and the Community for the generous gesture, and promised that the students will honour the confidence reposed in them.

The Lebanese Scolarship Program has assisted around 600 Ghanaian students in media and law disciplines covering the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Ghana.

However in 2020, Ambassador Kheir expanded the scheme to include students at the School of Languages and the School of Performing Arts, both at the University of Ghana.

More recently, the scheme further expanded to include students of Public Relations, Translation and Film and Television at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC).

The Lebanese Scholarship Program is currently in its 12th year.

Publish list of public officers’ asset declarations monthly – Domelevo to Auditor General

0

Former Auditor General Daniel Yao Domelevo has called on the current Auditor General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, to publish a monthly list of public officers who have declared their assets.

His call follows government responses denying media reports that several high-profile officials from the Mahama administration have failed to submit their asset declaration forms.

According to the reports, nine out of 55 ministers and deputy ministers missed the March 31 deadline, defying both legal requirements and a directive from the President.

The government has, however, strongly refuted these claims, accusing the media of misreporting the situation.

In an interview with Citi News, Mr. Domelevo argued that regular publication of the list would promote transparency and encourage compliance.

“There is nothing wrong with the Auditor General updating us month by month on the assets of public officials. No law prohibits that. He is not going to disclose the content of what has been declared to him, but he should publish every month. That is going to be fantastic,” he stated.

He continued: “Given that the constitution says that the declaration should precede the taking of office, I will wish that the president takes a cue from the misbehaviour of his appointees.”

Ghana-Trinidad and Tobago Business Chamber initiates program to deepen relations for mutual growth

0

The Ghana-Trinidad and Tobago Business Chamber, headed by Victor Owusu, and the Honorary Consul of Trinidad and Tobago in Ghana, Hilton John Mitchell, have collaborated with the organizers of the Ghana-Trinidad and Tobago Golf and Business Summit to propel mutual business growth in both countries.

This partnership facilitated business and diplomatic discussions with Senator Paula Gopee-Scoon, Minister of Trade and Industry; Senator Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs; and Dr. Roger Roach, President of the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association.

The potential collaboration, championed by business partners from both countries, is expected to boost exports and stimulate economic growth.

It aims to enhance trade between the two nations, particularly in the export of Ghanaian staples such as yam and cassava, which are currently in high demand in Trinidad and Tobago.

Following a trip to Trinidad and Tobago by some Ghanaian business professionals in March 2025 to establish relations with the Caribbean business community, the two countries have committed to hosting an annual business summit to deepen ties and foster mutual growth.

The five-day trip, organized by Yaw Asamoah and Frank Afari Ankamah for the Ghana-Trinidad and Tobago Golf and Business Summit, saw 15 business executives touring various agencies and enterprises in the Caribbean country, as well as participating in the “Greatest Show on Earth” carnival held in Trinidad and Tobago each March.

The business delegation, which includes golf enthusiasts from the Achimota Golf Club, is expected to reciprocate the visit by welcoming business partners from Trinidad and Tobago to Ghana in September this year.

This initiative has laid the groundwork for potential partnerships in areas such as corporate governance, leadership, and management.

With a focus on youth exchange programs, cultural collaboration, and educational cooperation, the future of Ghana-Trinidad and Tobago relations looks promising.

Boosting Exports

The Director of Operations for Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG), Samuel Chiatey Barketey, who is also an associate partner at Afrimore Advisors Law Firm, affirmed: “Trinidadian investors are interested in establishing a battery assembly plant in Ghana, which could create employment opportunities and increase foreign exchange earnings.”

He noted that Ghana could also explore opportunities for exporting and importing goods, including textiles, with Trinidad and Tobago expressing interest in Ghana’s textile industry.

Barketey emphasized the importance of government involvement in facilitating this collaboration, particularly in areas such as security, infrastructure, and policy implementation.

He argued that the current government’s plan to reset the economy aligns with the proposed partnership, which could lead to increased exports, employment opportunities, and foreign exchange earnings.

Additionally, Barketey urged the government to take advantage of these partnerships by investing in the cultivation of staple crops and other products of interest to bilateral partners. This would allow Ghana to dominate the market while creating jobs and generating revenue.

Despite challenges such as the lack of direct flights between Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago, Barketey believes the potential benefits of the partnership far outweigh the obstacles.

He added that this collaboration could generate interest from airlines to initiate direct flights between the two countries.

Barketey encouraged the Ghanaian business community to participate in the upcoming Ghana-Trinidad and Tobago Summit in September 2025 to explore opportunities aligned with their fields of interest, fostering business expansion and mutual growth.

Investment

Victor Owusu, President of the Ghana-Trinidad and Tobago Business Chamber, has urged the government to invest in Ghana’s tourism industry.

He noted that the Trinidad and Tobago government has made significant investments in Carnival 2025.

The Trinidad and Tobago Carnival is projected to surpass $640 million in revenue from visitor spending, create employment opportunities in hospitality, entertainment, and tourism, and contribute to economic growth.

Owusu highlighted the potential of similar events in Ghana, particularly during Christmas festivities, to attract tourists and serve as a revenue-generating opportunity.

He pointed out that Ghana’s tourism industry, including cultural events like the Fancy Dress Carnival in Sekondi-Takoradi, Winneba, and other national festivals, could benefit from better organization and investment.

Owusu urged the Ghanaian government to take a keen interest in developing the tourism sector by supporting programs and events that could attract visitors and generate income.

Security

Owusu commended Trinidad and Tobago for its effective organization of the carnival, particularly regarding security measures.

He encouraged the Ministry of Tourism and the Ghana Tourism Authority to send a delegation to Trinidad and Tobago to study the strategies employed by the Carnival Commission and apply them to Ghana’s festivities.

“I was impressed by the security deployment during the carnival. Police personnel were well-organized and ensured visitor safety. I believe we could learn from Trinidad and Tobago’s approach to crowd management and security during large events,” he said.

Owusu added that his trip to Trinidad and Tobago was eye-opening and believes Ghana can adopt valuable lessons from the Caribbean nation’s approach to security, tourism, and event management.

Opportunity

In an interview following the trip, Dr. George Addo Larbi, a Management Consultant and Governance Advisor, noted that the visit offered an opportunity to explore the Caribbean region and identify potential areas for cooperation with Ghana.

He indicated that the trip revealed numerous opportunities for mutual development, particularly in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors.

Dr. Larbi emphasized the need for follow-up and implementation of decisions made during the visit to ensure sustained momentum, especially with the anticipated visit of a delegation from the Trinidad and Tobago business community.

He called for the exploration of academic exchange programs between universities in Ghana and those in Trinidad and Tobago, as well as the broader Caribbean, to facilitate knowledge-sharing and contribute to both countries’ development.

Body modification fan Toxii believes ‘imperfections make you unique’

In just four short years, a young woman has swapped her fresh-faced look for an extreme appearance that has left some people feeling “scared”.

Body modification fan Toxii now looks utterly different to the blue-eyed blonde she was not all that long ago. The 31-year-old has swapped her subtle glam style for a series of body modifications, including head-to-toe body ink, which has more or less blacked out the entirety of her upper body.

Her once sparkling baby blues have also been coloured with pitch black ink, which matches her thigh-length raven hair, while a pair of horn implants now sprout from her forehead. Toxii has had her tongue split in two, while her earlobes and upper ears have also been cut away.

She has however, saved the most dramatic change for her nose, which she has, to the horror of many TikTok followers, had chopped off.

And even though her nose is no longer on her face, Toxii still keeps it around. She told Devon: “I have all my body parts, in like little jars.”

Toxii, who is originally from Belgium, also opened up about why she’s decided to opt for such an alternative route, explaining: “I like to be imperfect and I think that imperfections make you unique.”

Toxii

As well as the significant modifications to her face, Toxii has also gone as far as to modify her most intimate parts, and has undergone scarification—a permanent body modification procedure whereby the skin is cut, burned or branded in such a way that creates textured or raised scars.

Although Toxii appears to be happy with the changes she’s made, not everybody approves of her transformation. Speaking with Need To Know, Toxii told of how she’s had to grow a thick skin to deal with the criticism, admitting: “Sometimes people are scared.”

This is evidenced in some of the concerned comments left on her social media accounts, with one person writing: “You were so beautiful before. What on Earth made you do this to yourself?”

Toxii
She’s revealed she intends to have ‘many more’ procedures

Another agreed: “I don’t understand how you can make these mods in such a short time. I think these decisions are best made over a longer period – it gives the body, mind, and soul time to adjust to the change and make a healthy choice on continuing. This quick impulsiveness breeds discontent and regret.”

Others, however, have been impressed by Toxii’s unique appearance, with a third person approvingly remarking: “The perfect woman does exist.”

Despite some of the negative feedback she’s experienced, Toxii hasn’t been deterred, and it would appear this is far from the end of her cosmetic journey. She has promised: “I have many more to come.”

Court Remands Adu-Boahene for 7 Days

Kwabena Adu-Boahen

A High Court in Accra has remanded the erstwhile Executive-Director of National Signal Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahen into custody for 7 working days.

This was at the request of the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine who told the court that surveillance gathered by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) shows that the accused person is interfering with potential witnesses for the prosecution.

Mr. Adu-Boahene is before the court together with his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng, and two others for allegedly stealing GHc49.1 million from the state in a purported deal to procure a cybersecurity system for the country.

The court presided over by Justice Eugene Nyante Nyadu, after listening and viewing the evidence presented by the office of the Attorney General to back their claim, revoked the bail granted to Mr. Adu-Boahen by another court in March and remanded him into the custody of EOCO.

This is to allow the prosecution to complete its preparation for its witnesses, including taking and filing of witness statements. Meanwhile, the court has ordered that Angela Adjei-Boateng, as well as Mildred Donkor, remain on the existing bail.

Eduwatch, ACET push for urgent reforms to transform Ghana’s TVET sector

0

Education Tink Tank Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch), in collaboration with the African Centre for Economic Transformation (ACET), has called for reforms in Ghana’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector to position it as a catalyst for national economic transformation.

This call was made during a validation workshop in Accra on Wednesday, April 30, where key findings from the recently concluded “TVET for Economic Transformation in Ghana” study were presented.

The workshop gathered stakeholders from government, the private sector, civil society, TVET institutions, and development partners to scrutinise the research and chart a path forward.

It revealed significant systemic weaknesses, including inadequate public funding, outdated training equipment, policy implementation gaps, poor digital infrastructure, and limited private sector engagement.
Among the most pressing concerns was the inadequate investment in green skills and competencies needed for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), highlighting the urgency to align TVET delivery with global workforce trends. The study also exposed gaps in teacher capacity, gender equity, and coordination between formal and informal TVET systems.

Addressing participants at the event, the Eduwatch Executive Director, Kofi Asare emphasised the need for decisive action: “The time to transform Ghana’s TVET system is now. We must shift from rhetoric to action by adequately financing skills development, modernising our infrastructure, and deepening industry partnerships.”

Key recommendations from the workshop include, allocating at least 5% of the national education budget to TVET, accelerating implementation of competency-based training and work-based learning, mainstreaming digital skills and expanding ICT infrastructure, promoting gender-responsive policies and equitable access, building structured partnerships with the private sector and upskilling instructors to deliver green and 4IR-relevant content.

Participants also called for harmonisation between formal and informal training providers and urged the government to create stronger frameworks for inter-agency coordination.

Eduwatch concluded by urging government, private sector actors, and development partners to act swiftly in adopting the recommendations to transform Ghana’s TVET sector into a resilient engine for economic growth and youth employment.

Ablekuma Nana Lace’s reason for quitting smoking that got Delay bursting into laughter

Popular freestyle rapper, Ablekuma Nana Lace play videoPopular freestyle rapper, Ablekuma Nana Lace

He’s known for his eccentric freestyles, street-smart charisma, and unpredictable energy. But when Ablekuma Nana Lace sat across from Delay, it was his blunt honesty and peculiar logic that stole the show.

The rapper, who carved out a niche for himself during the COVID-19 lockdown with his viral performances and quirky fashion sense, opened up about a lesser-known chapter of his life: his four-year journey with marijuana.

“I started in my early 30s. I learnt how to smoke during my school days… you know when you go to the club and someone gives you a cigarette to hold for them, or tells you to try it?” he told Delay

But it wasn’t the admission that raised eyebrows—it was the reason he gave for walking away from it all.

“I was like, ‘Lemme hold on and try other stuff,’” he said with a straight face.

Delay couldn’t hold back her laughter.

Nana Lace, unfazed, explained that although weed boosted his creativity, it also came with guilt. “Sometimes, when you’re smoking, your guilty conscience pricks you.

“So I felt it wasn’t good for me, so I decided to stick to cocktail,” he said.

The moment, at once hilarious and oddly sincere, summed up everything fans have come to expect from the entertainer; raw, unpredictable, and completely in his own lane.

While public perception may still brand him a “weed boy,” Nana Lace doesn’t seem bothered. “I can’t think for them,” he said coolly when Delay asked how he felt about the label.

In a world where image is everything, Ablekuma Nana Lace remains unbothered. He embraces his imperfections, shapes them into a signature style, and walks the line between comic relief and cultural reflection — with a cocktail in hand. Not just any cocktail, but alcohol-based drinks, which he says sit better with his conscience than the weed ever did.

Court remands Kwabena Adu-Boahene for seven days

Kwabena Adu-Boahene is the former Director General of National Signals Bureau Kwabena Adu-Boahene is the former Director General of National Signals Bureau

The former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, has been remanded by the Accra High Court into the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for seven days.

The court stated that Kwabena Adu-Boahene’s remand is to allow the Attorney General’s office sufficient time to complete the preparation of witness statements for the case.

The case has subsequently been adjourned, and Kwabena Adu-Boahene is expected to reappear in court on May 13, 2025, for further directions from the court.

Further reports indicate that counsel for the accused, Samuel Atta Akyea, requested the court to maintain the existing bail conditions for all the accused persons.

However, the Attorney General opposed this request specifically in relation to the first accused, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, arguing that he had interfered with potential prosecution witnesses, grounds he deemed sufficient to warrant remand.

After hearing submissions from both the Attorney General and the legal counsel for the accused, the judge ruled that Kwabena Adu-Boahene be held in custody for seven days, excluding weekends. This decision was made despite pleas from the defense counsel for the court to include weekends within the remand period.

Kwabena Adu-Boahene has officially been charged with 11 counts of stealing, including the alleged transfer of GH¢49 million (approximately $7 million) from the bureau’s account to his personal account, among other offenses.

The suit, which was filed at the High Court in Accra, also had three other accused persons, including the wife of Adu-Boahene, Angela Adjei Boateng; his company, Advantage Solutions Limited; and a banker, Mildred Donkor.

The charges filed against the accused persons included: stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29); conspiracy to steal, contrary to Sections 23(1) and 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960; and defrauding by false pretences, contrary to Section 131(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Some of the other charges against them are: wilfully causing financial loss to the state, contrary to Section 179A(3)(a) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29); using public office for profit, contrary to Section 179C(a) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29); and collaboration to commit a crime, to wit, using public office for profit, contrary to Section 179C(b) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

South African woman convicted of kidnapping daughter Joshlin Smith

0

Joshlin Smith has not been found more than a year after she went missing Joshlin Smith has not been found more than a year after she went missing

The mother of a South African girl, who disappeared aged six more than a year ago, has been convicted of kidnapping and trafficking her daughter.

Kelly Smith, her boyfriend Jacquen Appollis and their friend Steveno van Rhyn were arrested after Smith’s daughter, Joshlin, went missing from outside her home in Saldanha Bay, near Cape Town, in February last year.

Appollis and Rhyn were also found guilty on Friday of kidnapping and trafficking Joshlin. All three had previously pleaded not guilty to to these charges.

Joshlin’s disappearance sent shockwaves across South Africa and despite a highly publicised search for her, she is yet to be found.

During the trial, held in March, prosecutors accused Smith of having “sold, delivered or exchanged” Joshlin and then lied about her disappearance.

Smith wiped tears from her eyes when the guilty verdict was read, while van Rhyn inexplicably broke into a smile.

Applause rippled through the packed court room and some onlookers began to cry.

The trial was held in Saldanha’s Multipurpose Centre to cater for the huge public interest.

Ahead of the verdict, nearby roads had been closed, while police officers were deployed in and around the centre.

Smith’s trial captivated South Africa, with witnesses and prosecutors making a number of shocking allegations.

The most explosive came from Lourentia Lombaard, a friend and neighbour of Smith who turned state witness.

Ms Lombaard alleged that Smith told her she had done “something silly” and sold Joshlin to a traditional healer, known in South Africa as a “sangoma”.

The “person who [allegedly took] Joshlin wanted her for her eyes and skin”, Ms Lombaard told the court.

A local pastor testified that in 2023, he had heard Smith – a mother of three – talk of selling her children for 20,000 rand ($1,100; £850) each, though she had said she was willing to accept a lower figure of $275.

Joshlin’s teacher then alleged in court that Ms Smith had told her during the search that her daughter was already “on a ship, inside a container, and they were on the way to West Africa”.

Smith’s lawyer, Rinesh Sivnarain, cast doubt on these allegations. He cited inconsistencies – recognised by the prosecution – in Ms Lombaard’s remarks and suggested she was an “opportunist”.

Sangomas are legally recognised in South Africa under the Traditional Health Practitioners Act of 2007, alongside herbalists, traditional birth attendants and traditional surgeons.

Some charlatans are involved in unscrupulous traditional so-called cures, and have been known to sell good luck charms that involve body parts.

What is NPP’s problem? Is CJ their Women’s Organiser? – Nana Yaa Jantuah quizzes [Video]

0

Presidential staffer, Nana Yaa Jantuah, has launched a scathing attack against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over their planned demonstration following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Nana Yaa Jantuah described the demonstration as unnecessary, suggesting it is simply the NPP’s way of coping with boredom.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, she questioned the NPP’s interest in the ongoing process and whether the Chief Justice was a party member.

“When there is a need for a probe, we must do so thoroughly, and so we have to investigate the petitions. What is the NPP’s problem? Is the woman a card-bearing member or their Women’s Organiser?” she quizzed.

The NPP and other opposition groups have announced plans to stage a demonstration on May 5 to protest what they describe as political interference in the judiciary.

The Chief Justice’s suspension followed the establishment of a case after three separate petitions were filed calling for her removal.

However, the political parties involved have strongly condemned the decision, calling it a direct attack on the independence of the judiciary.

But infuriated by the move, the former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) asserted that it could also be out of guilt.

“Everything the woman did that Ghanaians aren’t happy with, the NPP emboldened her, so they feel guilty—because I don’t see why they would bring parties together for a demo.

“They have nothing doing, and I see it as boredom. This is not the first time someone in an independent body is being probed. Charlotte Osei and other people went through it, so what is the NPP’s problem?” she fumed.

Fight illegal mining menace – CPP charges workers

0

By Edward Acquah

Accra, May 2, GNA – The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has urged Ghanaian workers to remain relentless in their fight against illegal mining activities.

The Party called on workers to resist environmental destruction and stand against the degradation of forests and water bodies.

In a message marking the 2025 Workers’ Day, Wing Commander Patrick Nelson Sogbodjor, Chairperson and Leader of the CPP, described illegal mining as a threat to environmental sustainability and food systems.

He noted that while the Government had made some progress in addressing the issue, “a bit more speed and sternness” were needed to achieve greater impact.

“…every second of this menace causes irreversible environmental damage and long-term economic malaise and food security problems, due to the degradation of our water bodies, fish stock, and farmlands,” the CPP said.

While commending workers for their dedication to national development, the CPP urged them to fight corruption in their workplaces and always prioritize the nation’s interests.

The Party acknowledged the Government’s progressive plans to revitalize the country and assured that it would continue to “keep an eagle eye” on its actions.

It pledged to offer praise, when necessary, provide constructive criticism, and propose solutions, as it had done with previous administrations.

“The CPP urges all well-meaning Ghanaians who love this country to continue to be the kindly light, leading the fight against corruption at their workplaces, and whenever they see something, to say something,” the Party said.

Publish list of public officers’ asset declarations monthly

300 okada riders trained in road safety

0

ABOUT 300 commercial motorbikes riders (Okada) have received training in road safety management as part of efforts by Gold Coast Mobility Innovations to professionalise the motorbike transport sector and improve public safety.

The Founding Partner of Gold Coast Mobility Innovations, Mr Ras Mubarak, told The Ghanaian Times in Accra on Wednesday that the company has developed a ride-hailing mobile app specifically for motorbike transport for customer services.

This according him, helps bring dignity and sanity to the okada business, “The motivation behind the initiative is the lack of proper training and regulation in the okada transport sector”.

He said the company has taken it upon itself to offer free training to commercial motorbike riders to improve road safety and customer service.

He said many riders do not follow road rules, which poses risks to themselves and passengers, hence the training.

Mr Mubarak said the riders went through road safety, defensive riding, customer care, and appearance, adding that riders also receive helmets, phone holders, and reflective jackets for free.

“We even give stipends to participants during training, we want to bring respect to okada riders, just like people respect DHL or FedEx riders. If they look presentable and are trained properly, they will earn more respect and trust from the public and law enforcement,” he explained

Mr Mubarak added that the app screens every rider through a background check, requiring valid documents such as the Ghana Card and rider’s license.

“Passengers will be able to see the rider’s name, photo, and registration number, which he says will help improve public confidence and support national security,” he said

Although the initiative is currently private, the company is open to working with government agencies Mr Mubarak mentioned ongoing discussions with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) about reducing the cost of licenses to encourage more riders to register legally.

“Many of these riders find the license fees too high. But if the fees are reduced, more will register, and DVLA will not lose anything. In fact, it will help the whole country,” he said.

Dr Mohammed Sumaila, another partner of the company said beyond road safety and customer service, the training also covered financial literacy.

He said many okada riders earn decent income daily but struggle to manage their money, “So they were taught basic financial skills to help them save and plan for the future”.

He said the company plans to expand training to other regions and also to partner with a major telecom company to provide free data for riders using the app.

“In addition, discussions are ongoing with motorbike suppliers to offer hire-purchase deals for riders who need bikes for work,” he said.

He said the initiative began in Liberia and Sierra Leone, aims to reduce accidents, improve rider professionalism, and make okada transport a more respected and efficient part of Ghana’s transport system.

Patrick Boamah calls for Africa’s financial independence, Ghana’s self-reliance

0

The former Chairman of Ghana’s Parliamentary Finance Committee and Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah has urged the nation to pivot from its reliance on imports and foreign aid toward a robust, self-sustaining industrial base.

In a statement copied to GraphicOnline, Mr Boamah underscored the urgent need to bolster local industries, particularly in pharmaceuticals, agro-processing, and textiles, to curb imports, boost exports, and fortify Ghana’s economy.

His remarks come at a critical juncture for Ghana, a nation grappling with economic vulnerabilities exacerbated by its dependence on foreign goods and support schemes like the African Growth and Opportunity Act (agoa).

While acknowledging the benefits of agoa, which grants preferential trade access to the United States for eligible African nations, the Okaikwei Central MP and former Chairman of the Finance Committee of Parliament cautioned against viewing it as a long-term crutch.

“An extension of agoa is welcome, but it cannot be indefinite,” he asserted. “We must wean ourselves from these policies and take deliberate steps to strengthen our own economic foundation.”

Central to Boamah’s vision is the development of competitive local industries capable of driving job creation and generating foreign exchange. He argued that Ghana’s economic aspirations—sustained growth, reduced unemployment, and global market relevance—hinge on the nation’s ability to produce rather than consume. “We cannot afford to sit back and be spoon-fed,” he said. “The time for strategic action is now.”

Reflecting on government initiatives, Boamah defended the One District, One Factory program, a flagship policy aimed at establishing industrial enterprises across Ghana’s districts. Despite criticisms and implementation challenges, he maintained that such efforts are vital to building local capacity. “Without bold steps to industrialize, the job creation we’ve been promising will remain an illusion,” he warned.

Boamah highlighted several sectors ripe for investment, emphasizing their potential to transform Ghana’s economic landscape. In pharmaceuticals, he pointed to local companies like Tobinco, Ernest Chemist, and Kinapharma as candidates for greater support to produce medicines domestically, reducing reliance on costly imports. The textile industry, he noted, holds untapped potential to generate significant revenue through exports, provided it receives adequate investment. Agro-processing also featured prominently in his remarks, with Mr Boamah urging the government to prioritize agribusiness as a cornerstone of economic diversification.

However,  Mr Boamah was clear that rhetoric alone will not suffice. He called for substantial financial commitments to these sectors, arguing that meaningful progress requires more than promises. “If we want to compete in global markets with our crops and products, we must be prepared to invest heavily in their growth,” he said.

This, he stressed, demands not only funding but also strategic planning and unwavering political will.

He painted a vivid picture of a Ghana unshackled from dependency, poised to chart its own economic destiny.

“We cannot wait another twenty years, banking on agoa or external aid strategic thinking, real investment, and strong leadership are what will propel us forward,” he stated.

NDC is a sellable brand – Afenyo-Markin commends ruling party’s rebranding effort

0

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has praised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its rebranding efforts, describing the now-ruling party as a strong and marketable political force.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Afenyo-Markin emphasised that in Ghanaian politics, party identity often holds more weight than the individual candidate.

“The NDC is a sellable brand, a marketable brand, and that is what people want. When going into a presidential election, it is not about the individual.

We must help them understand not only our ideology, but also what we can do for them.”

Workers demand total reset of pay regime

0

By Comfort Sena Fetrie-Akagbor

Tamale, May 02, GNA – Mr Joseph Ansah, Secretary General of Trades Union Congress of Ghana has called for a total reset of the pay regime in the country.

He said the current framework for wage determination was no longer fit for purpose as it did not sufficiently reflect the prevailing cost of living and basic needs of workers and their families.

He added that resetting salaries and working conditions went beyond annual adjustments of salaries and allowances.

Mr Ansah made the call in a speech read on his behalf at this year’s May Day celebrations in Tamale on Thursday.

He said “It is obvious that Ghanaian workers cannot reset with this low pay levels. We cannot reset amidst this high level of pay disparities. It is energy-sapping and demotivating to say the least.”

He said, “We must replace the current minimum wage with a living wage that considers the needs of workers and their families.”

He called on the government to stop illegal mining in the country, saying “We urge your administration to take decisive action to close this chapter and lead a new approach that prioritises environmental protection and responsible land use.”

Mr Ali Adolf John, Northern Regional Minister gave assurance that government was putting in place measures to ensure that wages reflected efforts, skills and productivity of workers.

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has called on politicians to rise above retaliatory politics and focus on building a nation grounded in justice, empathy and unity.

In an interview on Joy FM and monitored by GhanaWeb on Friday, May 2, 2025, he shared a personal experience that has helped shape his views on politics.

“I have said that the time has come for us as a nation to leave behind us the era of retaliatory politics…” he stated.

The Member of Parliament for Effutu also recounted how his stepfather, an ardent supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was demoted in 1996 when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate, Jerry John Rawlings, won the election.

“My stepfather was an amazing foreman. He worked at Pomadze Pottery in 1996. He was so much involved in the NPP politics.

“Right after the election, my stepfather was demoted and made a watchman. Me sitting here today? Should I carry that pain?” he quizzed.

Afenyo-Markin stressed the need for political actors to separate personal histories from governance issues.

“Every Ghanaian in one way or the other has a story to tell. I’m saying that as individuals in the space, as actors, we would have our own issues.

“But beyond this is governance, and that is where I want the direction to be,” he noted.

Honour the king of palm wine music, Agya Koo Nimo before he dies – Mahama to Creative Arts ministry

President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Ablah Dzifa Gomashie, to organise a national ceremony in honour of Ghana’s legendary ‘Palmwine Highlife’ musician, Agya Koo Nimo.

Speaking on May 1, 2025, during the launch of the ‘Black Star Experience’ at the Black Stars Square in Accra, President Mahama made an appeal for the living legend to be celebrated while he is still alive.

“Honour the king of Palm wine Music, Agya Koo Nimo before he dies. He shouldn’t die before we go and cry at his funeral. We need to honour Agya Koo Nimo before he passes away. Dzifa, let’s organize a ceremony to honour him. I know he has been honoured before, but let’s honour him again before God calls him,” Mahama stated.

John Mahama further emphasised that the government plans to establish a trust fund for ageing artistes.

This initiative, according to him, aims at supporting the welfare of older creatives and will be part of the broader Black Star Experience.

The plea from the president drew applause from guests and stakeholders gathered for the launch of the initiative, which aims to promote Ghanaian heritage, music, and tourism on a global scale.

Kwabena Boa-Amponsem popularly known as Agya Koo Nimo is one of Ghana’s most respected musical icons and a pioneer of the palm wine highlife in Ghana.

Agya Koo Nimo has a career spanning several decades and has entertained several generations of Ghanaians.

He has carried Ghanaian culture beyond the shores of the country through his unique storytelling, acoustic guitar mastery, and traditional wisdom.

The legendary highlife artiste is often described as a “living library of Ghanaian oral tradition,” because his music is rooted in Akan proverbs, folk tales, and values.

Invest your betting money into farming for future gains

Sam George is the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation Sam George is the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has urged the youth to avoid engaging in sports betting and instead invest in a more lucrative venture like farming.

He explained that when one bets and loses, the individual does not gain any income, which he deems a wasteful venture, even though one may win sometimes.

The Member of Parliament for the Ningo-Prampram constituency advised that it would be prudent for bettors to invest their funds in farming, which will earn them valuable income in the future and also help impact the lives of those involved.

“I’m not hiding my faith as a Christian; I don’t bet. I have my opinions on people engaged in bets and all that, but I think this would be a better use of the money people are betting and losing. If you’re a betting person, you stake a bet that Arsenal will beat PSG because they beat them three months ago, and then you lose – that money is gone forever.

“Meanwhile, you could have invested that money in a farm and affected the life of a man or woman and their family. And you’re assured that a year later, at the very least, you get your money back,” he said in a viral video shared on X.

He added that his outfit will work on getting bettors to understand the essence of investing in farming to ensure food security.

“It’s essential that we figure out a way to tap into that market and get them to appreciate that our food security is national security. So, if we’re able to invest in farms – if I’m not farming, but I’m putting disposable income into someone who’s actually farming and guaranteeing that farm – I get to benefit from it. I think we should look at it as a ministry,” he added.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has scrapped the betting tax as he promised during the 2024 general elections campaign period.

See Lamine Yamal’s ‘insane’ statistics with Messi and Ronaldo at age 17

L-R: Leo Messi, Lamine Yamal and Cristiano Ronaldo L-R: Leo Messi, Lamine Yamal and Cristiano Ronaldo

Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal’s impressive statistics have surpassed those of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at the age of 17 in their footballing careers.

The Spanish football star, after making 100 appearances for both club and country, has scored 22 goals and made 33 assists, totalling 55 goal contributions.

There is a vast contrast between Yamal’s records and those of two players who are regarded as among the best of all time, Messi and Ronaldo.

Argentine Lionel Messi, playing for Barcelona at the age of 17, made nine appearances, scoring once and assisting none, totalling a single goal contribution, far from the Spaniard’s performance.

Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who was playing for Sporting Lisbon at the same age, made 19 appearances, scoring five and assisting four, making up nine goal contributions.

Yamal, at his young age, played a key role in Spain clinching the 2024 European Championship and helping Barcelona win the 2025 Copa del Rey.

He is on the brink of achieving a historic feat as Barcelona competes for a treble, with potential wins in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.

The prodigy has been commended by football pundits and legends, including Jamie Carragger, Thierry Henry, Micah Richards, and Rio Ferdinand, among other coaches.

They believe that if the youngster maintains his excellent performances in the years ahead, he could become one of football’s greats by the time he retires from the sport.

Anger as Uganda president’s son says he’s holding opposition bodyguard

0

Eddie Mutwe has been missing since Sunday when he was reportedly picked up by security forces Eddie Mutwe has been missing since Sunday when he was reportedly picked up by security forces

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of Uganda’s president, has confirmed the detention of an opposition leader’s bodyguard, who has been missing for five days.

Edward Sebuufu, alias Eddie Mutwe, was reportedly picked up on Sunday by unidentified individuals in both civilian clothes and military fatigues in the central town of Kiwango, sparking public outrage.

In a series of posts on X, Gen Kainerugabai, who is also Uganda’s military chief, said Mr Sebuufu was “in my basement”, attaching the bodyguard’s photo with a clean-shaven head.

Gen Kainerugabai’s remarks have sparked public anger with Ugandans using the hashtag #FreeEddieMutwe to demand Mr Sebuufu’s release and condemn his detention.

Gen Kainerugaba frequently makes political comments, which his critics say contravenes the military’s code of discipline.

The 51-year-old army general is seen as a possible successor to his long-serving father, Yoweri Museveni, in power since 1986, who has denied that he is grooming his son for the presidency.

Gen Kainerugaba has made many controversial statements on social media, touching on subjects considered taboo for a serving soldier.

In 2022, he made headlines for discussing an invasion of neighbouring Kenya, a comment that forced his father to step in and apologise.

He recently sparked anger with a tweet in which he threatened to behead opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine.

Late on Thursday, he sparked another social media storm after he published a photo of Mr Sebuufu, Bobi Wine’s bodyguard, appearing half-naked and clean shaved.

Bobi Wine said Mr Sebuufu was on Sunday “violently abducted” from Kiwango by armed men travelling in a police van, popularly known as “drone”, before he was whisked to an unknown place.

In a series of posts, Gen Kainerugaba said his soldiers had captured Mr Sebuufu “liked a grasshopper” and he was learning Runyankore, a language spoken in western Uganda, while in custody.

He said Mr Sebuufu was “looking very smart these days” after his beard was shaved by “my boy”, referring to his junior soldiers.

The general said he would only release the bodyguard if ordered to do so by his father, President Museveni.

Gen Kainerugaba did not explicitly state where Mr Sebuufu was being held, or on what legal charges.

Security forces are yet to comment on the matter but police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke on Monday told local media that he was not aware of Mr Sebuufu being held in any police station.

Opposition officials and social media users in Uganda have demanded the bodyguard be produced in court if he is in lawful custody.

Bobi Wine has called for a “solidarity” rally on Friday in the capital Kampala, accusing Gen Kainerugaba for “illegally holding, torturing, and dehumanizing” his bodyguard.

“This is a non-partisan opportunity to unite. Friends of Eddie and other Ugandans of good conscience, let us come together in solidarity not just with Eddie but all political prisoners!,” Bobi Wine posted on X.

In a statement, the Uganda Law Society has called for the immediate release of the bodyguard, saying his ordeal was not an isolated case but “part of a systematic campaign to silence dissent and crush the aspirations of people yearning for freedom”.

The society feared that the reported involvement of the army in the matter “underscores a dangerous nexus of military power and political oppression”.

Mr Sebuufu, who is in charge of Bobi Wine’s personal security detail, has been arrested several times and charged with various offences, including treason and illegal possession of ammunition. The opposition says his arrests and charges are politically motivated.

He has been a key target in several security crackdowns on opposition activities, especially during elections and mobilisation campaigns, local media reported.

Bobi Wine, a popular singer who has declared his intention to challenge President Museveni for the second time in the 2026 elections, has often been prevented from holding political rallies.

There are growing concerns about the targeting of opposition figures and supporters by security agencies as political mobilisation intensifies ahead of the elections.

The government has blamed the opposition for the regular clashes between civilians and the security forces, saying they hold rallies without permission.

Ayawaso North MCE approved, 2 others rejected

0

Assembly members of the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region have overwhelmingly confirmed Haruna Mohammed Awal as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

All the 18 assembly members voted  ‘Yes’ to approve his nomination as the MCE for Ayawaso North at the election held at the Church of Pentecost Maamobi Central Assembly in Accra last Wednesday.

Mr Awal became the first nominee of the President in the Greater Accra Region to be confirmed as MCE.

Rejection

However, the President’s nominees for Ayawaso West and Ayawaso Central Municipal assemblies were rejected by their respective Assembly members during the confirmation, also held separately last Wednesday.

The two nominees; Dr Michael Mensah for the Ayawaso West and Randolf Collingwood-Williams for Ayawaso Central failed to secure the two-thirds majority required to become the MCEs for their respective assemblies.

For Ayawaso West, Dr Mensah out of 19 eligible voters made up of six government nominees and 13 assembly members, polled nine votes representing 47 per cent of the vote; while 10 representing 53 per cent voted No in the election supervised by Lydia Agyiri, the Ayawaso West Municipal Electoral Officer.

The Assembly sitting was adjourned by the Presiding Member (PM) of the Ayawaso West Municipality, Benjamin Nortey Oklah, although no specific date was communicated to the members to reconvene.

For Ayawaso Central, the President’s nominee, Randolf Collingwood-Williams, secured only six votes representing 35 per cent at the assembly sitting presided over by its PM, Hudu Ismail. In this case 11 voted “No” for his confirmation in the elections supervised by the Municipal Electoral Officer of Ayawaso Central, Lydia Anom; while one of the assembly members was absent.

Their rejection means the President would have to renominate them or nominate a new candidate to be confirmed as the MCE as they could not make at least 50 per cent of the votes to make it eligible for them to automatically seek reconfirmation.

Ayawaso North

The Electoral Commission (EC) under the supervision of the Municipal Electoral Officer, Apostle Tizor A. Watson, conducted the election for the confirmation of Mr Awal as the MCE for  Ayawaso North  which was witnessed by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso North, Yussif Jajah Issaka.

Ms Ocloo, in her address, expressed gratitude to the Assembly Members for the unity exhibited in the election process; ensuring that the nominee was duly confirmed without any hurdle.

She commended the MP for his effort and living up to expectation, saying, “he [MP] told me that as for this place, he’s giving us 100 per cent. Indeed, he gave us 100 per cent.

Though, we have NDC and NPP assembly members, they all came together and confirmed the nominee”.

The minister urged other Districts and Municipal Assemblies to emulate the example of Ayawaso North and ensure the smooth sailing for the President’s nominees during the confirmation.

Appreciation

The new MCE for Ayawaso North, Mr Awal, expressed gratitude to President Mahama for the confidence reposed in him as his designated leader in the municipality.

He thanked the assembly members for the overwhelming endorsement and pledged to work with them as a unit to address the challenges of the municipality and bring the needed development to the area.

He assured the people of his commitment to a proactive, responsive and productive leadership to transform the municipality during his tenure; adding that he was ready to work with everyone regardless of their background.

Background

President John Dramani Mahama last month nominated 29 persons as chief executives of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies(MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region.

Key among the nominees were the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 parliamentary candidates for Tema Central, Ebi Bright, and Weija-Gbawe, Felix Odartey Lamptey, as Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for Tema and Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Weija-Gbawe, respectively.

The appointment is the full complement of the positions of MMDCEs in the Greater Accra Region, which has 29 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

0

The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has commenced administrative steps toward fulfilling a key promise made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and President John Dramani Mahama to pay monthly allowances to all elected assembly members across Ghana.

This initiative, rooted in the provisions of the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, marks a significant shift in the treatment of local governance actors and aims to enhance the effectiveness of the decentralisation process.

Kuipers Breeders marks two years since first Ghana Hatch

0

This month marks a significant milestone for Ghana’s poultry sector as Kuipers Breeders Hatchery celebrates the 2nd anniversary of its inaugural chick hatching in May 2023. Located in Amuyawkope, Sege, within the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region, the hatchery has become a vital pillar in Ghana’s drive toward poultry self-sufficiency.

The hatchery broke ground in 2022 and began production the following year, completing construction on schedule. Spanning 200 acres, the facility is equipped with cutting-edge incubation technology, automated environmental controls, and world-class biosecurity systems. Together, these elements ensure the consistent delivery of healthy, high-quality chicks to farmers across the country.

A sister company to De Heus (known locally as Koudijs Animal Nutrition), Kuipers Breeders Hatchery was established to strengthen Ghana’s poultry value chain. After first entering the market with feed solutions, De Heus expanded to hatchery operations in line with its long-term strategy of empowering local farmers with the tools and infrastructure needed for success.

Just 18 weeks after operations commenced, the hatchery delivered its first commercial batch of chicks—a milestone that set the pace for what has become an impressive production trajectory.

In its debut year alone (2023), the hatchery recorded an output of 2,114,119 chicks. By the following year, production had more than doubled, reaching 5,198,684 chicks—a clear indication of the facility’s rapid growth and growing influence within Ghana’s poultry industry.

This upward trajectory underscores both the increasing trust in the brand and the rising demand for locally hatched, high-performance chicks. With improved delivery logistics, technical farmer support, and strategic partnerships, production efficiency and market impact are set to continue growing.

In line with a national push to reduce dependence on poultry imports, which currently account for 95 per cent of poultry consumed in Ghana, our hatchery continues to make significant strides toward food sovereignty.

“What this hatchery allows us to do is utilise international European and Dutch standards of chicken rearing and production, right here inside Ghana. This way, every stakeholder achieves the most value, from farmer to consumer,” said Moses Yaw Maidoo, General Manager.

With a strong emphasis on sustainability, Kuipers Breeders is determined to elevate industry standards without relying on the continuous importation of day-old chicks. By embedding world-class technologies into local systems, the hatchery provides a long-term, locally driven solution that supports Ghanaian farmers and strengthens the economy.

“Our advanced facilities are a testament to our unwavering commitment to providing our clients with only the best quality products and services,” added Jurjen Kuipers, CEO. “We are proud to be part of Ghana’s agricultural transformation and excited about the future we’re building together.”

As Kuipers Breeders Ghana reflects on two years of operations, it also looks ahead — they are determined to raise the bar of Ghanaian poultry standards, strengthen rural farming incomes, and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s broader agricultural ambitions.

What is NPP’s problem? Is the CJ their card-bearing member? – Nana Yaa Jantuah quizzes

The Chief Justice’s suspension followed the establishment of a prima facie case after three separate petitions were filed calling for her removal.

However, the political parties involved have strongly condemned the decision, calling it a direct attack on the independence of the judiciary.

But infuriated by the move, the former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) asserted that it could also be out of guilt.

“Everything the woman did that Ghanaians aren’t happy with, the NPP emboldened her, so they feel guilty, because I don’t see why they would bring parties together for a demonstration.

“They have nothing doing, and I see it as boredom. This is not the first time someone in an independent body is being probed. Charlotte Osei and other people went through it, so what is the NPP’s problem?” she fumed.

IERPP’s Red Alert: Ghana’s Financial System Loses GH¢271,233 Daily To Fraud

0

The writer

“The alarming rise in fraud cases within Ghana’s banking sector is not just a statistical trend, it is a glaring red flag signaling systemic vulnerabilities that demand immediate and decisive action.”

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) releases an annual fraud report to highlight emerging fraud trends in the banking sector, reinforcing financial system stability. The 2024 report analyzes fraud risks across Banks, Specialized Deposit-Taking Institutions (SDIs), and Payment Service Providers (PSPs), concluding with directives to strengthen security and combat fraud.

The latest data reveals concerning trends in Ghana’s banking sector, with fraud cases increasing by 5% from 15,865 in 2023 to 16,733 in 2024. More alarmingly, the financial risk exposure, measured by Value at Risk (VaR), grew at an even faster rate of 13%, rising from GH¢88 million to GH¢99 million during the same period. This indicates that while fraud incidents are becoming more frequent, each case is also proving more financially damaging to institutions.

Value at Risk (VaR) for banks estimates the maximum potential loss from fraud over a set period (daily/monthly/yearly) at a given confidence level (e.g., 90%, 95%). When examining the daily impact, banks are losing approximately GH¢271,233 to fraudulent activities every day, which accumulates to about GH¢8.25 million monthly and totals the reported GH¢99 million annual loss for 2024.

These figures underscore how fraud represents a persistent and significant drain on the financial system, necessitating constant vigilance and robust preventive measures. The analysis of confidence levels in risk assessment provides further insight into potential exposure. At a 90% confidence level, there remains a 10% chance that actual losses could exceed the GH¢99 million VaR estimate, representing a moderate risk tolerance. In effect, the banking sector faces a dual challenge of rising fraud frequency and escalating financial losses, with institutions hemorrhaging an estimated GH¢271,233 daily.

Equally concerning in the report is the 33% rise in staff involvement in fraudulent activities, with cash theft accounting for 75% of these cases. These figures underscore a pressing need for the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and other stakeholders to address the root causes of this menace before it erodes public trust and destabilizes the financial system.

The BoG has rightly expressed concern over the steady increase in staff-related fraud within regulated financial institutions. While the call for stronger internal controls, enhanced due diligence during recruitment, and continuous staff training is commendable, more must be done to translate these measures into tangible results.

The dismissal of only 43% of staff implicated in fraud, as highlighted in the report, suggests a lax disciplinary culture and a legal system that inadvertently enables impunity. This leniency undermines deterrence and perpetuates a cycle of misconduct. To curb the escalating fraud and reduce the VaR, the government and the BoG must adopt a multi-faceted approach. First, the BoG should enforce stricter penalties for financial institutions that fail to implement robust anti-fraud measures, including hefty fines or sanctions.

Second, the legal process for prosecuting fraud cases must be expedited to ensure swift justice, thereby discouraging potential offenders. Third, the BoG could collaborate with the Judiciary to establish specialized courts for financial crimes, ensuring that cases are handled with the urgency and expertise they require.

Additionally, the government should invest in advanced fraud detection technologies, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, to identify suspicious transactions in real-time. Public awareness campaigns on the consequences of fraud, targeting both customers and staff, could also foster a culture of accountability. Finally, whistleblower protections must be strengthened to encourage reporting without fear of retaliation.

“The fight against fraud in Ghana’s banking sector is not just a regulatory obligation, it is a moral imperative. Only through collective vigilance, unwavering enforcement, and a zero-tolerance policy can we safeguard the integrity of our financial system and restore the confidence of the Ghanaian people.”

Receiving 1 million naira is beyond anything I expected, and I’m truly grateful. Your support means the world to me. God bless you abundantly sir.”

The surprise didn’t end there as Don Jazzy, moved by her previous balance of just ₦67.29, responded, “Amen ooo. That your akant balance is not healthy. I don add another 5 million. More blessings ma.”

Adeyemi confirmed the receipt of the additional N5m with a screenshot of her account balance with N6m.

May your hands never lack, your heart always be at peace, and your generations forever enjoy divine favour. Thank you #DONJAZZY. May God continue to enlarge your coast.”

In response to a critic who questioned her previously low balance, she said, “None of my accounts get 1 naira, I can screenshot all for you, only GTBank get 67 naira.”

Meanwhile, Shallipopi also gifted a million naira each to two of his fans while promoting his song.

“Summer is coming, ready your shorts and bikinis. Don’t forget to take a lil speaker with you in case you wanna jam da Album,” he posted on X on Thursday.
