The Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Musah Dunkwah, has shed light on the key political figures held responsible for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Dunkwah outlined the findings of a detailed post-election survey conducted by the research firm.

According to him, the initial approach was to allow respondents to openly state who they believed was responsible for the NPP’s loss and why, before narrowing down the list for a more structured, close-ended survey.

“We wanted to find out what personalities people would assign blame to before heading to the field. From that study, we shortlisted the names most frequently mentioned and used them in our final survey,” he explained.

The data revealed that former President Nana Akufo-Addo topped the list, with 68% of respondents citing his administration’s performance as a decisive factor in the party’s electoral collapse.

Mr Dunkwah highlighted public frustrations with the President’s dismissive tone, especially his controversial remarks in the Ashanti Region suggesting that voters could support someone else if they disagreed.

“Many were disappointed with his refusal to heed calls from his own party to make changes in government. His disregard for traditional authorities also did not sit well with the electorate.”

The report further identified former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as the second-most blamed figure, with 40% of respondents attributing the defeat to his role in the government’s economic management.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 presidential candidate and then-Vice President, was cited by 37% of respondents, who felt his campaign failed to inspire enough confidence.

Other key figures named include Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh (33%), various government appointees (32%), and Members of Parliament (25%). Kennedy Agyapong, who contested in the NPP primaries but did not lead the party into the general election, was held responsible by 9% of respondents.

Mr Dukwah also challenged the narrative that voter apathy in the NPP’s strongholds caused the defeat, citing hard numbers that show a different story.

“Mathematically, that analysis is flawed,” he stated. “Our post-election data indicates that nearly 20% of self-identified NPP supporters did not vote for the party in 2024. Of those who initially planned to vote for Bawumia, 17% switched or abstained on election day—with 14% ultimately voting for Mahama.”

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) is urging the government to prioritise the development of satellite markets across the country as a strategic step toward improving Ghana’s market infrastructure and easing congestion in major trading centers.

This follows a recent comment made by the Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, who threatened to discipline traders who fail to comply with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s (KMA) directive against trading in unauthorised areas.

On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the Mayor issued a two-week ultimatum to traders operating along pavements within the central business district to vacate the area or face sanctions, including being lashed.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb Business, the Director of Communication at GUTA, Joseph Paddy, said the association strongly objects to the mayor’s statement.

He stated that one of the most effective solutions would be for the government to build satellite markets to reduce pressure on central markets across the country.

“Why won’t the government partner with the public so that, together, we can create better market spaces for our people? We need to build more satellite markets so people don’t have to travel all the way from Kasoa to Accra just to buy or sell. The population outweighs the market spaces, and that’s why we see people trading in unauthorised places,” he said.

He further called for stronger collaboration between the government and key stakeholders, such as trade associations and market leaders, to help resolve the rising issues faced by traders.

According to the 2022 Auditor General Report, total income increased by 34% to ¢5.628 billion in 2022, from ¢4.199 million in 2021. The increase in total income was due to a 38.7% increase in revenue from power sales.

Current Assets of VRA also increased by 36.1% from ¢8.631 billion in 2021 to ¢11.751 billion in 2022 due to an increase in trade and other receivables.

Similarly, Current Liabilities recorded an increase of 26.2% from ¢6.861 billion in 2021 to ¢8.659 billion in 2022. This was due to an increase in trade payables from ¢6.404 billion in 2021 to ¢8.363 billion in 2022.

Accra, April 17, GNA – The Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye Committee, which investigated the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general election, Wednesday presented its report to the National Council of the party in Accra. 

The 12-member committee, which the former Speaker of Parliament chaired, was mandated to assess the factors that contributed to the NPP’s loss and recommend strategies for rebuilding the party and prepare for future elections. 

The report was presented during two crucial meetings by the Party at the Alisa Hotel to deliberate on its future direction.  

The first meeting was held by the National Executive Committee and the second by the National Council, which is the second highest decision-making body of the main opposition party. 

It is expected that the findings would play a pivotal role in shaping the NPP’s strategy, moving forward. 

Mr Justine Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary, NPP, said the details remained an internal party matter and cautioned party members not to speculate to avoid misinforming the public. 

“We have just received the report, and we are yet to go into the details. In the coming days whatever we need to communicate to our members and rank file of our party we will do so,” he said. 

He also emphasised the need for internal reflection and careful deliberation on the findings before any public disclosure. 

Mr Frimpong said the National Council had constituted a nine-member committee to review its constitution, looking at the Prof Oquaye report, especially on the proposals for amendments, to aid its work.  

The move is aimed at addressing structural and organisational issues identified by the report, with the goal of strengthening internal mechanisms and preventing future electoral setbacks. 

The emergency meeting was attended by key party figures, including former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, 2024 presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former running mate Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and other top party executives. 

It would be recalled that the New Patriotic Party, in January this year, set up a 12-member committee to investigate the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election. 

It has, for the past three months, engaged stakeholders, including journalists, party members, grassroots supporters, and political analysts to collect information that would ensure a thorough review.  

Party members and supporters were encouraged to contribute and support the fact-finding process to ensure a comprehensive and impactful investigation.

A poll by Global InfoAnalytics has shown that majority of Ghanaians support the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

The survey, conducted between April 7 and April 16, 2025, sampled 2,545 voters across all 16 regions of Ghana.

The findings show that 52% of voters support the Chief Justice’s removal, while 20% oppose it. Additionally, 18% of respondents were neutral, and 10% expressed no opinion.

When those who opposed, were neutral, or had no opinion were asked if they would support the removal if evidence of legal misconduct emerged, 30% indicated they would support it, while 35% remained opposed, 19% stayed neutral, and 16% still had no opinion.

The poll also highlighted regional variations in voter sentiment. In the Greater Accra Region, 58% of respondents supported the Chief Justice’s removal, compared to 16% who opposed it. In the Central Region, 51% supported the move, while 16% opposed it. However, the Ahafo and Upper East regions were exceptions, where support for removal was not the majority view.

Educational background also played a role in shaping opinions. Among respondents with junior high school (JHS) education, 57% supported the removal, compared to 17% who opposed it. For those with senior high school (SHS) education, 50% supported the move, while 21% opposed it. Among tertiary-educated respondents, 54% supported the removal, and 18% opposed it. Even among those without formal education, 37% supported the removal, while 30% opposed it.

Political affiliations further influenced voter opinions. Among those who voted for John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 election, 79% supported the Chief Justice’s removal, while only 4% opposed it.

Conversely, among voters who supported Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, 17% backed the removal, while 47% opposed it. For voters who supported other candidates, 38% were in favor, 19% opposed, and 23% were neutral.

The poll underscores the complex dynamics of public opinion surrounding the Chief Justice’s role and highlights the influence of regional, educational, and political factors on voter sentiment. It remains to be seen how these findings will shape the national discourse on judicial leadership in Ghana.

Mahama invites Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Leaders to ECOWAS@50 Launch

Ghana will this year host the Accelerate Africa’s Growth Conference (AAGC), a high-level Pan-African forum aimed at driving economic transformation through the empowerment of women, youth, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

At a press briefing held on April 16, 2025, at Jubilee House, organisers announced that Accra will welcome over 1,500 delegates from across Africa and the diaspora, marking the first time the conference will be held in Ghana.

The event is being organised by Timeless Women of Wonder – Africa (TWOW-Africa), a Pan-African development organisation focused on inclusive economic growth.

The 2025 edition of the conference is strategically aligned with Ghana’s ongoing national RESET agenda, which emphasises new development models, inclusive growth, and economic re-engineering. Organisers say this makes Ghana a fitting host at a pivotal time in its transformation journey.

Held annually and rotated among African countries, the conference has evolved from the Timeless Women Conference series, first launched in 2015. Past editions have featured influential African leaders, including the Presidents of Malawi and Ethiopia, and the Vice President of Liberia.

Over the past decade, the conference has catalysed policy reforms and practical economic programs in host countries, notably upskilling over 35,000 women for the construction industry in Kenya.

“This year’s conference marks a new chapter. With the rebranding to AAGC and its alignment with Africa Day, we’re deepening ownership of Africa’s development by Africans themselves—both at home and abroad,” said the convener, H.E. Nyakan June.

The conference will spotlight innovative, practical solutions to job creation and inclusive wealth-building, while fostering a Pan-African network of changemakers. Organisers also revealed that 60% of delegates are expected to be Ghanaian, ensuring strong local participation and impact.

Meanwhile, the Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President, Kofi Okyere Darko, has pledged the Ghanaian government’s full support for the event.

Emmanuel Kofi Armah-Buah is the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Kofi Armah-Buah, has explained the government’s decision to reject the renewal of Gold Fields’ mining lease for the Damang Mine.

According to him, the company failed to meet the necessary renewal requirements, prompting the government’s decision.

This clarification comes after several industry players called on the government to provide a categorical explanation for the rejection of Gold Fields’ lease after 30 years of operation.

The company’s current lease is set to expire on April 18, 2025.

Speaking at a press conference on April 16, 2025, the minister said, “Gold Fields has failed to allocate any budget for exploration at Damang for the past two years. In essence, the company was not prepared, as required by law, to expend resources on exploration activities to discover new ore bodies or convert existing mineral resources into mineral reserves to support a mining program or operation.

“This lack of investment raises serious concerns about the company’s commitment to sustainable mining practices and the long-term viability of this particular mine,” he stated.

President John Mahama has extended another invitation to the military leaders of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to attend the upcoming ECOWAS summit in Accra, for crucial Summit heralding the 50^th Anniversary of ECOWAS

The invitation comes despite the three Sahel nations formally cutting ties with ECOWAS earlier this year and forming their own Alliance of Sahel States (AES). Their withdrawal has raised concerns about trade disruptions and regional cooperation, particularly for Ghana and its neighbours.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, explained that the invitation was made directly by President Mahama in his capacity as summit host.

“I did indicate all ECOWAS heads of state have been invited for this event, including heads of state of the AES countries,” Mr Ablakwa stated at the launch of the anniversary celebrations. “Because of the divorce from ECOWAS, it requires the host president to be solely responsible for that invitation. So they will come as guests of the Ghanaian president.”

He added that President Mahama’s move is a step towards rebuilding ties between ECOWAS and the breakaway countries.

“In the spirit of goodwill and seeking to foster reunification… when President Mahama discussed with his colleagues that he wanted to invite the AES heads of state, he did not face any opposition or resistance. That is really a good sign that there is genuine commitment and desire for ECOWAS to be fully reintegrated.”

Mr Ablakwa also revealed that President Mahama had briefed the ECOWAS Chair, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, on his engagements with the military governments.

“President Tinubu has said that at the next ECOWAS heads of state summit, President Mahama will be given the floor to present a detailed report of his engagements,” he said.

Meanwhile, questions have emerged over the continued involvement of the Sahelian leaders in ECOWAS matters, given their official exit. Fatau Musa, an ECOWAS expert, offered context to the long-standing challenges.

“Up until they left, they were participating in the Accra Initiative. ECOWAS always invited them to this meeting. Since about 2007, the Sahelian countries have been very reticent in collaboration with the rest of the region,” he said.

He explained that ECOWAS had previously attempted to build a Sahel strategy but met strong opposition from countries like Algeria.

“When the G5 Sahel was created, applications by other ECOWAS members to join were rebuffed. So the trajectory that the AES has taken is not very surprising,” he noted.

This project aims to equip Ghana with innovative spatial planning tools

Ghana’s Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST), with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), has officially launched the project “Using UN Biodiversity Lab (UNBL) to Support Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) Mapping in Ghana.”

Humanity is confronted by an unparalleled triple planetary crisis with urgent and increasing need to simultaneously address pollution, the climate crisis, and biodiversity loss.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) underscores that greenhouse gas emissions must be rapidly reduced by 43% by 2030, while achieving net-zero Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) emissions globally by the early 2050s. Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) reports that approximately one million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction, many within decades, due to human activities.

The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2024 also identifies extreme weather events, critical changes to Earth’s systems, and biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse as the top three most severe risks over the next decade.

Addressing these interconnected crises requires immediate and coordinated global action to reduce emissions, protect biodiversity, and implement sustainable practices that safeguard the planet for future generations.

Integrated spatial planning can support national and subnational governments in identifying where to protect, restore, and sustainably manage nature to address the interconnected challenges. This was recognized in the adoption, in December 2022, of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) during the 15th Conference of Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP) – particular in its targets 1, 2 and 3.

The inception workshop for the year-long project, “Using UN Biodiversity Lab (UNBL) to Support GBF Mapping in Ghana”, was held on Thursday, March 27, 2025. The project is designed to support Ghana’s efforts to enhance the use of spatial data analysis and undertake biodiversity mapping to support the implementation of the KMGBF.

Funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, this project builds on previous collaborations under the Nature Transition Support Program (NTSP) and aims to equip Ghana with innovative spatial planning tools to advance sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.

Ghana will play a key role in co-developing new features for the UN Biodiversity Lab (UNBL), which will support national efforts to monitor, plan, and report on biodiversity-related commitments.

“The workshop comes at a timely moment, where the use of spatial data in policy planning is extremely important. Specifically, incorporating spatial data into the development of Ghana’s National Biodiversity Strategic Action Plan, will lead to the development of a more comprehensive plan that is easy to implement, monitor and evaluate”, Emelyne Wright-Hanson, Principal Development Planning Officer and Head of Biodiversity Unit at MEST, highlighted.

The project presents an opportunity for Ghana, as well as six other countries (Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, South Africa, and Sri Lanka) to better integrate spatial data into the policy making process towards the setting and achievement of the country’s National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs).

This important work occurs at a crucial moment when countries are updating their NBSAP and required to submit their 7th National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) by the end of February 2026, in accordance with CBD COP decision 15/6.

In his remarks, the Environment and Climate Cluster lead at UNDP Ghana country office, Dr. Abdul-Razak Saeed emphasized the importance of collective action in safeguarding Ghana’s biodiversity, he noted, “This launch signifies collective commitment to leveraging technology and spatial data to safeguard biodiversity and promote sustainable development.

We urge all stakeholders to seize this opportunity to work together, share knowledge, and drive impactful change in Ghana’s biodiversity landscape. Together, we can harness the power of spatial data to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for all”.

As we embark on this ground-breaking project, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting Ghana’s rich biodiversity and promoting sustainable development. We believe that by harnessing the power of innovative technology and spatial data, we can create a better future for all Ghanaians and contribute to the global effort to address the interconnected crises of climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss.

Goldfields Damang Mine lease expires on April 18

The lease of Gold Fields’ Damang Mine has sparked widespread discussion this week following the government’s decision not to renew it upon its expiration on April 18, 2025.

Industry stakeholders have expressed concerns, citing potential negative impacts on investor confidence and possible job losses for mine workers.

However, the government has clarified that the company failed to meet the legal requirements necessary for a lease renewal.

In this article, GhanaWeb Business explores the legal framework governing mining lease renewals in Ghana.

According to Section 44 of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), a holder of a mining lease may, at any time, but not later than three months before the lease’s expiration (or within a shorter period permitted by the Minister), apply in the prescribed form for an extension of the lease for up to 30 years. The application may cover all or any of the contiguous blocks and minerals under the original lease.

Additionally, the application must be accompanied by a proposed program of mineral operations.

The Act further states that if the holder has materially complied with the obligations imposed by the Act, including those relating to the lease’s operation and conditions, the Minister shall grant the extension, with conditions specified in writing.

Moreover, the law provides that:

“Where the holder has made an application for an extension of the term of the lease, and the term of the lease would, but for this subsection, expire, the lease shall continue in force in respect of the land the subject of the application until the application is determined.”

In case of a disagreement between the Minister and the leaseholder, Section 27 outlines the procedure for resolving disputes.

The government maintains that Gold Fields failed to meet some of these legal requirements, which led to the rejection of the renewal application. It has also announced plans for the state to assume control of the mine’s operations.

The school topped six other contesting schools with 87 points in the keen competition dubbed “Bright Yao Afeku’s maiden edition”.

Fodome Woe/Agbetsido M.A. Basic School came second with 85 points, Gbi-Atabu, third with 77 points, followed by Alavanyo Agorme E.P. Primary School with 76 points, Holy Rosary R.C. Primary School with 73 points, St Francis Demonstration Primary School had 63 and Gbledi Gborgame R.C. Primary School had 62 points.

Mr Bright Yao Afeku, Chairman of Board of Directors, Lead Connect Global and CEO of Bright Wondowtech Limited, noted that education was the bedrock of development in every country, and at Lead Connect Global, they believed that empowering young minds was a responsibility and a necessity for societal transformation.

He said for the past month, Lead Connect Global had embarked on a voluntary teaching outreach in some communities across the Municipality including Wli Todzi, Wli Agoviefe, Fodome Hloma, Fodome Ahoe and Gbledi Gborgame.

Mr Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, Hohoe Constituency Member of Parliament (MP), noted that he was committed to improvement in the education outcomes of the Constituency.

He said there was a proposal for the construction of 20 ICT centres across the Constituency as well as putting up staff quarters in some areas to motivate teachers.

Mr Tsekpo said an award scheme was also proposed for the teachers to create competition among them adding that while there would be competition among learners, same would be among their teachers as well to help improve quality education in the Constituency.

Suspected armed robbers attacked a group of miners along the Kotokuom road near Nyinahin in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.

The incident occurred around 9:00 p.m., leaving one miner critically injured.

According to reports, the assailants—believed to be operating within the area—robbed the miners of cash and mobile phones during the attack.

One of the victims, 26-year-old Michael Larry, sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. He was initially rushed to the Nkawie Community Hospital but was later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi due to the severity of his injuries.

Speaking to Citi News, the victim’s brother, Stanley Obeng Larry, confirmed the incident and raised concerns about the increasing insecurity in the area.

In response to the attack, residents have appealed to the police to increase patrols along the Kotokuom–Nyinahin road to help curb the rising threat of armed robbery targeting miners and commuters.

This directive is in accordance with Section 126(1) of the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992) and the Business Name Act, 1962 (Act 151).

It marks the first official directive issued under the tenure of the new Acting Registrar, Maame Samma Peprah.

According to her, companies that fail to attach financial statements or comply with the directive may face a penalty of GH¢1,000.

In addition, business names that are not renewed will be considered lapsed, allowing the Registrar to reassign them to other individuals or entities.

The Registrar emphasised that the goal is to promote transparency and strengthen regulatory compliance within Ghana’s business environment.

Companies are required to file their annual returns within 18 months of incorporation and annually thereafter.

These returns must include up-to-date information such as company directors, shareholders, and financial statements. This helps determine the financial and operational status of a business.

Former Member of Parliament for the Anyaa Sowutuom constituency, Dickson Adomako Kissi has cautioned the NDC on the economic battles between China and America.

Dickson Adomako told KMJ in an interview on Prime Morning that the economic battles between China and America would have an impact on Ghana’s economy.

“I must also forewarn the NDC with regards to the current economic battles between China and America and the fact that it will impact our economy,“ he said.

He also mentioned that as a Ghanaian, he is worried about the impact the economic tension is going to have on the country’s economy as Ghana has been hit with a 10% tariff increment on goods exported into the country .

“If the NDC fails, I get hit too. Basically, we all go to the same market, when I get to the fuel station, the fuel doesn’t know whether you’re NDC or NPP. You buy it at the same rate, “he shared .

Hon. Adomako also expressed hope that the new administration will navigate its responsibilities effectively and steer the nation towards sustained growth avoiding mistakes of the opposition.
